Camp Cooking, Picnics And More With The Cadac Safari Chef 2

There are two Cadac Safari Chef 2’s. One is LP – low pressure- and one is HP – high pressure. The LP version requires a regulator and hose, but can then be attached to a number of different gas bottle options, from the large refillable ones – which works out the best, cost wise – to the smaller single use ones. I tend to keep a small one in the bag, and a backup one in my camping kit, because an extra heavy item to lug around isn’t much fun. One canister normally lasts me about 5 or 6 meals, depending on what you’re making, adding about £1 to the price of the meal. A price I’m happy to pay to not have to find room in the car for a large canister. That said, if I knew we were in one spot for a week or two, I’d probably opt for the large one.

With the HP you only have the option of the screw in canisters which screw directly into the bbq.

I opted for the LP, and to save some money ended up buying a separate hose to go with my existing regulator, but when it arrived I realised my regulator had different markings than those that are supplied with the Safari Chef 2, and the local camping shops couldn’t tell me if it would be okay to use, so I ended up going back to the online shop and just buying the set as is! If you’re not very clued up on these things, I’d suggest the same – I have three regulators now and they all differ in shape and fitting and it’s important to make sure you have the right thing since you’re working with gas and fire.

Why the Safari Chef 2?

What does the Safari Chef 2 come with?

You can also use the flat griddle instead of the BBQ grate – this is perfect for things like eggs, pancakes, and fajitas.

The lid can be placed on to conserve the heat, but the lid is itself a cooking surface – turn it around and you have a fantastic deep pan in which you can cook… anything you like! We used it this week for a vegetable medley and I thought adding some chicken to it would have made a super easy one pot meal, which would leave you with just one dish to clean.

In addition to these you can also buy a separate paella pan and a pizza stone! I expect you could fit the pizza stone in the Safari Chef 2 bag as there is a bit of room in it, though I’d have to try the paella pan (don’t own this one yet!) and let you know if that fits too.

Favourite things about the Safari Chef 2?

• It’s lightweight and self contained. It fits in behind the passenger seat under my daughters feet without being a burden on space in a tiny car.
• It is super easy to put together and get dinner going. We’ve used it on the beach, a picnic in the park and camping. While not advised, I’d imagine, we also used it in the tent a few times as there were gale force winds outside and cooking – in fact standing up straight – was near impossible.  There’s no mess, no flames jumping around and no sparks flying.
• I love that we can eat as we would at home. Healthy meals with practically no huge effort and no extra dishes.
• I LOVE that it’s reduced the number of cooking pots and bits that I have to carry around in the camping kit. We take a bowl for mixing/stirring/combining (thought at a push we could use the lid) and the rest is all done on the Safari Chef 2.

Anything I’d change about the Safari Chef 2?

A way of lifting a hot griddle or grill would be really useful – I use the bbq tongs and just flick it off when I need to switch between plates (i.e. when you’ve friend the onions and now want to grill the patties) but it’s not the end of the world. Where the tongs flick isn’t appropriate, you  can just BBQ the patties on the griddle. Not the end of the world. A clip on handle would be useful though. Or I suppose you could buy decent fire gloves.

And just in the interest of transparency, I do also still use my pocket gas stove as no one should ever have to wait for dinner to finish before being able to boil the kettle!

What can you cook on the Safari Chef 2?

So far, excluding regular BBQ food, we’ve done:

• Fruit Skewers with healthy chocolate sauce
• Sausages and sweet corn (for hotdogs)
• Scrambled egg and bacon
• Cheese filled herb tortilla wraps
• Hamburgers (with fried onion)
• Flapjacks/Crumpets/Pancakes (depends on what you call them!)

The coffee safari

I love to find a relaxing coffeehouse wherever I am in the world. And really, its not about the coffee – its about the atmophere of an oasis of recreation with delicious drinks, snacks, comfortable seats, wi-fi – simply a place to work, relax or meet friends. When you move to a new place, there are a few things you have to find: a supermarket, a reliable drugstore or doctor, schools, maybe a gym, good restaurants - and a coffeehouse. These are the things we need to re-create our lives and day-to-day routine in a new environment. Looking back, I wanted to believe my oasis could be Starbucks, simply because of its international concept. Of course this kind of coffeehouse is nothing like my hometown coffehouses. But in the time since it appeared on the Austrian market, I came to appreciate the soothing jazz, the interior, the drinks. When I started travelling more and more, it was a familiar point anywhere in the world. A sort of living room or home base, or an “international embassy” of coffee lovers. When I first visited Moscow, as a very naïve tourist who never really thought that a few years later this would become kind of my hometown, there was no Starbucks. When I came back in 2008 to work as an intern, Starbucks had arrived. But after a few visits, I was slightly dissapointed. The service wasn’t quite what I was used to from other countries and ordering a coffee-caramel-frappucino ended in my receiving two separate drinks. Even though Starbucks has since improved dramatically in my eyes, (and now the coffee-caramel-frappucinos are not a problem at all any more) I was motivated to find alternatives. Maybe I wouldn’t need my international retreat at all! I wanted to find a perfect local alternative. Equipped with notebook and reading material, I started my search. I began on the "mile-of-cafes" on Maroseyka Street, near metro station Kitai-Gorod. Left and right coffeehouses line up, giving me every choice possible. European-style cafes that remind me of cafes in Vienna are next to Russian cafe-chains, Kofe haus and Shokoladnica. Starbucks is a little further down the street and a place called Coffee Bean. I feel a special flair around this area. It has something creative, little boutiques, smaller, even colorful houses, many foreign people and a lot of restaurants with exotic cuisine. Here is my assessment in a nutshell: Eric Kayser, the European-style café, looks just a little too fancy to be comfortable. Starbucks I already know, also they do not provide free wi-fi and most of the time they are out of the prepaid cards you need to use if you want to pay for their wifi. The only thing worth a special mention is the nice upper-level lounge in the one near Kitai-Gorod which is exceptionally comfortable and nice to sitin . Recently Starbuck opened an outlet in Respublica at metro station Serpukhovksaya, an interesting and modern bookshop that not only sells books, but cd’s, cult-toys, t-shirts and bags. The built-in Starbucks corner reminds me of bookstores like Barnes and Noble in the U.S. Coffee Bean is a nice spacious café, with great breakfast, snacks, bagels, cupcakes with a slightly “green” or “alternative” touch with self service. Kofe Haus positively surprised me by being open 24 hours and having free wi-fi, very nice service, great business lunch with soup, salad, pie and drink for 300 rubles and great cakes for around 200 rubles. Here I feel that I have found the optimal work environment. Counters that face the windows are equipped with electrical outlets, free wi-fi and very subtle service that respects your privacy and doesn’t make you feel awkward about spending an entire afternoon with them even without ordering non-stop. Shokoladnitsa, in my opinion, has just simply the best atmosphere, salads and blinis. A personal favorite are the blini julien-style, and the Rimska okhota (Roman hunt) salad with veal, cranberry sauce, croutons, mushrooms and pistachio dressing. Their cakes are slightly less expensive, but also slightly smaller, than in Kofe Haus. And some of their coffee drinks can be really sweet. The only problems are the non-existant wi-fi and sometimes you have to wait too long for the check. Sometimes I get lucky, but experience has told me to be ready to wait up to 20 minutes to complete the process of paying your bill. My personal favorites Both, Kofe Haus and Shokoladnica are chains and simply everywhere in Moscow, so its very likely to find one of them anywhere you are. Also, they both offer breakfast and business lunches. And they have both orientated their menus towards Moscow’s taste for sushi, so next to cappuccino and cake you can order raw fish. Some examples where to find them : Kofe Haus: Shopping Center Okhotny Ryad, shopping center GUM (both near Red Square), train station Paveletsky. Shokoladnitsa: Metro station Oktyabrskaya, Metro station Baumanskaya, shopping center Evropeisky at Metro station Kievskaya. My personal favorite for working, reading, relaxing alone: Kofe Haus My favorite in food and going out with friends: Shokoladnitsa The search is not over yet. There are many other interesting cafes out there that I haven’t found yet. Time for another coffee safari! I’ll surely keep my eyes open.

There are more than 20 towns in America called Moscow. Why?

The mystery of the Moscows of America also intrigued Erjan Aisabay, who set out to visit all of them and write a book about his experience. Aisabay, who was born in Kazakhstan but attended college in the original Moscow, launched his project hoping that America’s shared love of Russia’s capital city might help bring the two countries together.

But as Aisabay drove from state to state, his dream of finding a Russian connection dwindled. And some of America’s Muscovites turned out to be less than supportive. Like in Moscow, Texas, where his attempt to strike up a conversation didn’t turn out as planned.

“I say, ‘Hi my name is so and so, you know I’m writing a book about Moscows’ and then you know she looks at me like completely mistrust and she’s like ‘You should leave.’ … And I saw something that looked like a gun. … This was my last Moscow and I’m like, ‘I don’t want to die in my last Moscow!’”

Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn speaks out after Paris Olympic performance: "I gave my all"

Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, also known as B-Girl Raygun, is speaking out after she received criticism and ridicule for her viral performance at the 2024  Paris Olympics . In an Instagram post  Thursday, she broke her silence.

"I really appreciate the positivity, and I'm glad I was able to some joy in your lives," she said. "That's what I hoped. I didn't realize that would open the door to so much hate, which is frankly, been pretty devastating."

"I went out there and I had fun," the 36-year-old breaker said. "I did take it very seriously. I worked my butt off preparing for the Olympics, and I gave my all." 

Gunn, a professor from Sydney  who holds a PhD in cultural studies, lost all of her three round-robin battles with a score of 54-0, drawing backlash for the lack of points and mockery over some of her moves in her routine, including a "kangaroo dance." It was even made fun of on " The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon ." She responded to some of her critics.

"Bit of a fun fact for you," she said. "There are actually no points in breaking. If you want to see how the judges thought I compared to my opponents, you can actually see the comparison percentages across the five criteria on Olympics com. All the results are there." 

She also drew questions over how she was selected to represent Australia.

The Australian Olympics Committee came out in defense of Gunn on Thursday, condemning a anonymous petition on Change.org that demanded an apology from her and Australia's chef de mission, Anna Meares, for their "unethical conduct" in choosing Gunn. The AOC said Gunn was selected to the Australian Olympic Team through a "transparent and independent qualification event and nomination process."

"It is disgraceful that these falsehoods concocted by an anonymous person can be published in this way. It amounts to bullying and harassment and is defamatory," AOC CEO Matt Carroll said in a statement. 

As of Thursday afternoon, the petition was no longer live on the site. 

The committee pointed out that Gunn held no position within AUSBreaking or DanceSport Australia — two entities that oversee competitive breaking in the country — in any capacity. 

Accusations were also aimed at Gunn's husband and fellow breaker, Samuel Free. The AOC said Free doesn't and was not a judge at the qualifying event. 

Breaking made its Olympic debut in Paris and won many fans. However, the sport did not make it onto the roster of sports for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles .

During the festive period we of course recognise the need to extend our returns window. Therefore all purchases made between 15th Nov 23 and the 25th Dec 23 may be returned up until the end of January 24  following our usual procedures.
