Transfer Case Fluid Replacement Service

How much does a transfer case fluid replacement cost, on average, the cost for a ford excursion transfer case fluid replacement is $111 with $16 for parts and $95 for labor. prices may vary depending on your location., what is the transfer case fluid all about.

The transfer case is a special gear box found in four-wheel and all-wheel-drive vehicles. It sends drive power from the engine to the front and rear axles. In all-wheel-drive vehicles, the transfer case helps to shift power from one axle to another, depending upon traction conditions. Lubricant fluid in the transfer case helps to keep its gears cool and turning smoothly. Replacing this fluid at appropriate intervals can help prevent premature wear and damage caused by contaminated or broken-down lubricant.

Keep in mind:

If the transfer case fluid is low, the entire transfer case should be inspected for leaks.

How it's done:

  • Check the condition of the fluid
  • Drain the fluid if it is dirty or brown in color
  • Fill the new fluid
  • Test drive vehicle and check for leaks

Our recommendation:

Transfer case fluid should be replaced at least every 30,000 miles. You should schedule this maintenance for your vehicle, and anytime the transfer case is inspected, the transfer case fluid should be checked.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the transfer case fluid?

  • Transfer case fluid is dirty
  • Car is unable to change gears

How important is this service?

The transfer case is a gear box that is unique to four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles. The transfer case is responsible for sending power from the engine to both the front and the rear axles, and shifting power from one to the other depending on the conditions of the road. Transfer case fluid is responsible for keeping the components of the transfer case well lubricated. When this fluid leaks out or becomes contaminated, it is no longer able to act as a lubricant, and severe damage can be caused to the transfer case.

Change that transfer case fluid!!

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

  • Add to quote

I finally got the plug out of the case yesterday...and drained the fluid. GOOD LORD...this stuff was black and about as thin as water. I'll post up pix of it a bit later...I set some aside to show you guys. But this stuff was nasty. Refilled with 2qrts of Amsoil Synth ATF and I feel much better. If you haven't changed your fluid in awhile...or not sure when it was done...might be something work looking into. I am sure glad I did.

i change my every 30k, and thats abotu when it starts to look a little gross, just fill up with the ford stuff!

For all I know this could have been the fluid that came from the factory. But it was nasty.

I changed mine at 80k and the fluid looked brand new. Refilled with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Mobil 1 Synthetic is ok for the transfer case? Cause I happen to have several quarts in the shed from the wifes old Honda. I think I'll change it this week! :thumbsup

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

once we get into the new place and get settled some....I'm gonna drain every fluid from the truck and redo it....I can just imagine what mine looks like :bubbakevin:bubba

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

The fluid is a 100k oil but if you are launching in 4 wheel I would do 50k. I got everything fixed FYI. THANKS Bill

I don't race or sled pull. Just tote the camper and drive through snow in the winter. Thanks Bill.

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

It's not like you don't have enough ATF .......

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Pepsi

That is some dirty oil I must agree it was due don't need a oil sample for that one. Bill

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Dave, are you going to send out that fluid for analysis?

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Thats some really ugly looking T-case fluid. Glad you got that outta there before some damage occured!

Man...you two fight more than a married couple LOL

I was trying to get along.:bang Bill

:haha :haha :haha Dave was teasing us.

The tranny and t-case are easy enough to access I change those fluids out every 15K miles--some guys might call it overkill but the fluid is cheaper than a new gearbox by a mile.

I guess I look at it if you put the best in your truck you are covered if you don't get carried away. Bill

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Can you use Mercon SP in the Tcase?

Spec is Mercon V, so I wouldn't. Plus, Mercon SP is a lot more expensive.

Its the Mercon V formula, so it should be fine.

Mine says Multi Vehicle Formula, suitable for use in vehicles that require "Ford* MERCON*, MERCON V, MERCON LV" not recommended for "CVT applications, Mercon® SP, Ford Type F" http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Other_Products/Mobil_1_Synthetic_ATF.aspx

Yeah, same stuff I used.

4cstr said: If you haven't changed your fluid in awhile...or not sure when it was done...might be something work looking into. I am sure glad I did. Click to expand...

I hope yours didn't look as nasty as mine did.

I have been using M1 EP for decades now. My vehicles have 160000 miles to over 400000 miles using M1 EP. I use 5W 30, change intervals at 10k miles, oil protects engine perfectly. I once blew my radiator in a Ford Focus and drove 40 miles with no coolant. Mobil1 EP protection is outstanding

I used this stuff on my 07' Crown Vic with the Ford 8.8, was super easy to refill my diff after replacing axle bearings and seals! Recommended! Didn't even drip any on the driveway!

Likely great stuff but the rest is a mixed bag

Would definitely check your car's underside first before buying this. On my IS300 it was a pain to reach the inlet. Tried the simple route to the fill hole but the angle was too sharp and the lid popped off. Lost almost half a bag. Had to stuff it over three steel frame parts while securing a screw to the tip so wouldn't lose the rest of it on the way to the fill hole.

There is a marketing slogan on the jug that says "Rated for extreme temperatures". What does that mean? 20 degrees F? Why not just put the information on the label? The information is not readily available on the website. Phone line is closed. It gets down to minus 40 here so we need this information, not a slogan. Idiotic!

Diff and Transfer case fluids

  • Add to quote

I'm gonna have my truck on a lift this weekend to change the shocks, so I want to go ahead and change the fluid in both diffs and the transfer case. The book shows a bunch of different weights for the different axles. Can anyone tell me what I need for an 06 F-250 4x4 with 3.73 gears or at least tell me how to figure out what axle types I have? How much will it actually take in each axle and the xfer case? I know the book shows capacities, but often it actually takes less than the spec in my experience with other vehicles. Do I need any kind of special additives in the rear end since it's limited slip? I just want to make sure I don't screw anything up since this is the first change I've done.

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Your front should be the dana 60 and uses 75w-90 @5.9 pints. Rear should be the ford 10.5" using 75w-140 @ 7 pints plus the ford xl-3 friction modifier. Tranfer case just uses ATF @ 4 pints.

My manual states 5.8 pints of 80W-90 gear oil for the F250/F350 Dana 60 front differential. Use a synthetic. FYI - The differential fluids are considered "Good for Life" fluids by Ford (unless submerged or other problems detected). For the Transfer Case, the manual states that the fill is only 2 quarts (4 pints as 67ModStang stated), but mine took 3 quarts to get to the top fill bolt - maybe I overfilled it??? (didn't think it was possible due to the simple design). Any good synthetic oil with the Mercon V rating would be good. Rear Axle: F250/F350 10.5 Axle - 6.9 pints of 75W-140 Synthetic (For the OP - This is what you have) F350 Dana 80 Axle - 8.5 pints of 75W-90 Synthetic F450/F550 Dana S110/S130 Axle - 14.0 pints of 75W-140 Synthetic The manual also states to use 8 oz of the friction modifier in the limited slip differentials, but I have read where many folks add a little less than that - they feel it performs better w/ no apparent reliability issues. Maybe others will comment. Also - some oils for the differential come w/ the friction modifier already added.

Mine has never been in water, so do I not need to change the diff fluids? I read a thread here somewhere that said you were supposed to change it at 60k. If I don't have to spend the money, I'd rather not. Does the transfer case use Mercon SP or just standard fluid?

The owners manual does state that there is not a service interval on the Ford rear axles which explains why it calls for 75w-140 unlike the Dana80 using 75W-90. IMO I would change it out anyway. Mercon SP is not necessary for the xfer case. I do recall it taking more than 2 qts to get to the fill plug on mine like Bismic stated. Just get an extra qt of everything to make sure you have enough.

Is the friction modifier required in the rear end if a good synthetic 75w-140 is used, such as Mobile 1 75w-140 syn?

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube 75W-140 LS contains special friction modifiers designed for limited slip-type differentials. In most applications, the addition of special LS (limited slip) additives is not required. For axles requiring the highest level of limited-slip performance, OEM specific LS additives can be added to this fluid. Click to expand...

Yep its required unless the fluid already has it in it.

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

when changing the t case fluid i was told to jack up the front of the truck so more fluid drains. when u fill it do you lower the truck or leave it like how u drained it??

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

I had the rear lower than the front (good idea)....Used Mobil1 ATF Syn 2.2qt, same stuff I used in my PowerSteering flush. Mobil1 75w-140 LS Syn in the rear diff and Mobil1 75w-90 LS Syn in the front.

when u filled your t case back up did u leave the front jacked up?

Yes, but I didn't have to actually jack the front up...used the incline of my driveway. So the front was higher than the rear.

oh ok thnx for the info

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Friction modifier is needed for the clutches in the limited slip differential. If you use fluid that already has modifier in it and it chatters when turning a corner add some more.

This is a racket imposed on us by "the man". Three different oils for the two diffs and the T-case? Sounds to me like using the 75w-140 in all three locations would work just fine. Any arguements as to why this wouldn't work? BTW - I'm NOT saying it's ok to do this. Just venting. I run the same synthetic engine oil in my F250 as I run in my Suzuki DRZ400SM without issue.

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

I can see using the same oil for both axles. The tcase needs a lighter weight oil. It actually uses pretty much the same fluid as the tranny fyi. So yup engine oil, axle oil, and tranny oil. Gotta have 3 kinds.

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

I use amsoil in both diffs and transfercase. I am very happy I did.

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT, use any oil in your diesel engine that does not have a CJ-4 rating if you plan on keeping your vehicle for many years. The additive package is completely different then the lower letter grades that are commonly used for gasoline engines. I worked in an oil refinery and we made the stuff, synthetic and regular. Sure, any good quality lube oil will do, but if you are looking for longevity you need to make sure it has the CJ-4 rating. Keep in mind even some synthetics do NOT have the CJ-4 rating.

2000 excursion 7.3 4wd.automatic. what fluid/additives and how much for changing tranfer case oil. also what oil / additives for diffs..do they take regular 80-90 wt and posi additive.also how much. thanks:icon_wink:

the T-case takes regular old Mercon III, about 3-4 quarts XY-90-GL in the front (SAE 90) in the front, 3.8 pints XY-75W140-QL (synthetic)in the rear 6.5-6.9 pints, plus 2 XL-3 4oz modifiers in the rear in you have a limited slip Sorry for the pints-its how my book lists fluids

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Transfer case: 2 quarts Motorcraft Transfer Case Fluid. Rear axle: 6.9 pints 75w140 synthetic. Pay attention: that's SYNTHETIC gear lube. Front axle: Your Owner's Guide calls for 3.8 pints 75w90 synthetic axle lube. The latest workshop manual published in 2003 for 2000 Excursion says SAE 90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant. The current quick reference chart for differential lube used by Ford techs is at: Motorcraft quick reference chart for axle lubes Since the quick reference chart is current, it may be different than old printed manuals from several years ago. I can't read upside down, so I've learned to print out the chart and then I can read it. Transfer case lube changed a few years ago. Your Owner's Guide says to use MERCON, but MERCON is no longer available, and you cannot use MERCON V. So you have to use the new stuff Ford developed specifically for transfer cases - Mortorcraft Transfer Case fluid: http://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubrican...ansfer Case Fluid&category=Transmission Fluid

i have synthetic 90wt.. good for front .. but looked at mercon V atf at store . it says on back "not for use in transfer case".. have to find some 75w140 syn.. is all 75w140 synthetic??

dieselturbo said: but looked at mercon V atf at store . it says on back "not for use in transfer case". Click to expand...

All 75-140 will be syn. Try the Royal Purple. You don't need to add the friction modifier because it's already in it at the perfect amount.

I've gone through 2 T Cases on this thing and its a pain to find non destroyed refurbished ones

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

I wonder why.. I've always just put atf in my transfer cases... alot of guys I know in the offroad world do the same.

Ford stopped the manufacturing of MERCON ATF by anybody a few years ago. MERCON ATF was fine in transfer cases, power steering pumps, automagic trannies, and the ZF manual trannies. MERCON V replaced MERCON for use in automatic trannies, but it's not good for transfer cases. So Ford had to come up with another lube for the transfer cases.

Royal Purple or Redline 75/140 for the rear( no friction additive needed) 75/90 for the front, either dino or synthetic Mobil 1 for the transfer case It doesn't get any easier..... You can find all of them at the local auto parts...

Yes Kevin, please let us know what they say. I have had Mobil 1 ATF in my transfer case now for two years.

Not a peep from Exxon Mobil yet. I'll be sure and post their response when and if it arrives.

Ive been running the mobile syn ATF for 7 years in my T-case. No problems. I change it once a year.

Yes, I see the chart says that. I am confused as to why the chart says synthetic but my owners manual says "Premium". They contradict each other.:read:

bigb said: I am confused as to why the chart says synthetic but my owners manual says "Premium". They contradict each other.:read: Click to expand...

Just changed it to synthetic 75/90. Thanks for your input.

Speaking of wrong fluids for diffs, I was wondering about some of mine. For the sake of simplicity ive been changing all of my diffs with synthetic 75w140. thats 1 D50, a sterling, and a ford 8.8 in a car. The 8.8 gets the snot beat out of it and also havent added any friction modifier (a little chatter, but I prefer a firmer grab of the clutches) and havent had any problems at all in any of my axles. Do any of you guys foresee any problems or should I take this post to pirate to get flamed there? :wink2:

2005 ford excursion transfer case fluid

Still synthetic atf. Or just get the tcase stuff from ford. Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk

I just changed my tranny and t-case and used Mobil 1 Syn ATF (again). I'm at 215k miles, and run all winter with the hubs locked in, so my t-case gets abused a bit, turning all winter long whether in 4x4 or not, and it hasn't grenaded on me yet. I'm personally not worried about using a "non-approved" fluid. But you could go by Ford's recommendation. They seem to change fluid specs as often as we change our underwear. :shrug03:

Hey thanks, that was a great explanation since I've never seen the internals of our transfer case.
