REVIEW: Scottish singer songwriter Alex Amor's captivating debut EP, "Love Language"
During the summer of 2018, Alex Amor withdrew herself from society and dedicated every second of her time to creating. She recounts this time as "wholly liberating," saying that it taught her patience and "the power of delayed gratification."
Amor's Love Language EP was one of the results of this period of intense creativity. The body of work as a whole is all about the complexities of romantic relationships - how, sometimes, both parties (or neither) are at fault for their destruction, how difficult it can be sometimes to communicate with one another. Communication is, most of the time, the driving force for relationships. If you can't talk to your partner about what you do or don't want/need/like, what can you do?
The first track on the EP, "The Part with Each Other," is slow and languid - dwelling, almost, on the nights that Alex describes in her lyrics, where she and her lover are together and can't ever imagine a moment when they're apart.
"Prove Me Right" has the makings of an instant pop classic. The instrumental track blew me away when I first heard it - so simple, yet so spectacular.
The third track on the EP is "Motion," a track which seems to be about that point in a relationship when you find yourself going through the motions. When being with your partner becomes exhausting and almost routine-like, rather than exciting or comforting. When you realize that you no longer want to be with this person, but you let it go on longer than you should because you don't want to hurt them. When Amor crooned "Blame it on bad timing / But, baby, maybe I'm / Always destined to be dissatisfied" into my ears for the first time, my mouth dropped in shock - I felt so seen.
Title track "Love Language" reflects back on that main theme of communication - if you communicate differently from your partner, rather than not at all, is that somehow worse?
"So Far" reminds me a little of early Taylor Swift, and as a closing track, it's really quite beautiful - it wraps the EP up perfectly, the lyrics a callback of sorts to track three's theme of giving up the gun, but only after you're too deep in it.
On the EP, Amor says, “Love Language, is a reference to Gary Chapman's book ‘The Five Love Languages’ which expands on the 5 different ways humans show affection in a relationship. The title track is about a relationship that fails to align in that way. Opposites can sometimes attract but in this case, they repel. I am obsessed with paradox and juxtaposition - calm and chaos, dark and light, serious and playful.”
For a five-track EP - and for Alex Amor's debut - Love Language is an incredibly moving, cohesive body of work. I've been sitting on this review since the EP's release simply because I truly couldn't find the words to explain how it makes me feel, because, honestly, I have quite a bit to learn from what Alex Amor has to say about love and its many intricacies. If you're looking for new, refreshing pop music, look no further than Alex Amor. There's no doubt in my mind she's got so much more to give us.

Alex Amor teaches a lesson in romantics on the brooding "Bad Tattoo"
With love in both her name and her heart, Glaswegian newbie Alex Amor bares all on achingly confessional new single, "Bad Tattoo".
When a tattoo needle hums to a halt, the pain stops almost immediately — but the mark left behind endures. That is tattooing, and that is intimacy. It’s a concept that imbues the tender new single from Glaswegian indie-pop starlet Alex Amor, whose earnest prose and intricate, spiralling refrains have been leaving their own lasting mark on listeners.
Written with Manchester indie-folk coven The Deep Blue who also lend backing vocals to the track, "Bad Tattoo" is a swirling, crystalline account of the aftermath of a relationship turned sour. Via rich lap steel sections and dreamlike retro pop beats, we are taken on a passage from youthful infatuation to inescapable demise, stopping to smell the flowers along the way.
“"Bad Tattoo" was written about a time when I wanted to forget someone,” Alex explains. “They kept making unwanted appearances in my thoughts across the day: while I was walking home, doing chores, lying in bed awake at night. I find it bizarre how it’s much easier to forget the good times but impossible to forget the bad. It seems that our worst memories are stored somewhere deep inside of us and as much as I wanted to erase this person from my head, they persisted on my skin like a bad tattoo. Like one of those drunken tattoos you get in Ibiza at 3am and regret for the rest of your life.”
While music always enriched her life, Alex’s compulsion toward creativity first led her to art school in Dublin where she studied textile design. Experimenting with tailored simplicity and bold patterns, it inspired a fascination that would endure as she continued to wrestle between the pull of her two deepest passions.
In January of 2018, Alex would return to London with only music on her mind, transforming the cupboard under her parent’s stairs into a makeshift recording studio. It was here she would undergo a metamorphosis of sorts; dedicating months to solely writing and recording while revelling in the divine power of creation over consumption. It spurred a catalyst of momentum which followed her as she relocated alone to the capital and began to sculpt her debut EP, Love Language .
Galvanized by big city living but still armed with her Glaswegian candour, Alex has released a steady stream of tantalizing, sophisto-pop bangers ever since. Touching on the complexities and heights of human relations, the restlessness of youth, and the inevitable demise of a relationship when both sides recognise they do not align, they chronicle her odyssey through early adulthood with all the voguish fuzz of labelmates WOOZE and Khartoum. A sonic bible for youngsters navigating blossoming connections.
Now fresh off the road from supporting fellow indie wunderkind Thomas Headon on his recent UK tour, Amor has teamed up with producers including Karma Kid (Poppy Ajudha, Shygirl) and Gianluca Buccellati to begin work on her second EP The Art Of Letting Go , the latter known particularly for his work on Arlo Parks’ Grammy-nominated album Collapsed In Sunbeams .
Adorned with sublime musical collaborators and a newfound conviction of mind, it represents a shift in focus and a determination to look ahead to the future: " The Art of Letting Go is a collection of songs dedicated to the universal theme of letting go”, Alex explains. “Letting go of the past, people who hold us back and the things that no longer serve us in life. It’s about getting out of your own way, choosing what's best for ourselves and surrendering to the moment, taking each day as it comes. My intention for this project is to help people feel uplifted, more at ease and inspire them to find their own ways of letting go.”

Alex Amor and the art of letting go
Alex Amor is a star in the making – I’m calling it now. Her new EP, The Art of Letting Go, accomplishes more in five short tracks than a lot of artists are able to in twice that. Alex’s emotive blend of indie-pop has as much in common with Norah Jones as it does with CHVRCHES, the EP’s melodies strong and catchy, but not so saccharine you feel like you need a dental filling afterwards. Simply put, this is one of the best EPs you’ll hear all year. So, of course we had to know more – we asked Alex to take us through The Art of Letting Go song by song with our foolproof questionnaire :
- About the Song
- Favourite Lyric
- Micro-Review (5 words or less)
- 0-10, how hard was it to ‘let go’ of this song?
COLOUR ME About : ‘Colour Me’ is one of those rare songs that wrote itself. It took maybe 30 minutes. That’s when you know it’s a good song! Everything flows in the writing. It was also one of the first songs I wrote for the EP. The song to me feels nostalgic yet familiar at the same time, like a warm hug on a summer’s day. I wrote ‘Colour Me’ when I was coming out of a dark place and sometimes when you’re in that head space, life can seem grey, monotonous and stale. But then all it takes is one person to come crashing into your life for the world to come back in blazing colour. That’s what falling in love feels like. It’s like you can see again but through this saturation lens where everything is in HD, and the boring parts of life become not only bearable but enjoyable again with this person by your side. Favourite lyric: ‘…pocket full of sunshine, need shades to see her, golden in the daytime…’ Micro-review: Sun-kissed slow jam The Art of Letting Go scale: 2 – I was sitting on this song for so long before it was released so it was a mixture of nerves and relief when it came out.
CASUALLY COOL About : ‘Casually Cool’ refers to a one-sided relationship. Where you put in all the effort to receive mere breadcrumbs back. Love and hate are different sides of the same coin but the real enemy of love is apathy. When a relationship is ending and the texts become fewer and far between, you can feel the other person slowly slipping away, becoming more passive and generally less interested. When you feel like someone doesn’t care about you anymore, it’s the worst feeling in the world. Something I’ve always done is remove myself from situations where I don’t feel wanted because the least we deserve is reciprocation in relationships. Don’t we all deserve to feel appreciated and adored? Favourite lyric: ‘Take me out for fancy meals, forget to ask me how I feel…’ Micro-review: A bop about apathy The Art of Letting Go scale: 3 – I was nervous for people to react to the ’80’s vibe but they seem to be enjoying this one!
BAD TATTOO About : ‘Bad Tattoo’ refers to a time when I really wanted to forget someone. There’s this ‘delete forever’ button on SoundCloud that I wanted metaphorically to press so this person could be permanently erased from my brain. But you can’t really ‘wipe the slate clean’ with people. Some way or another, they will be permanently etched in the corners of your memory. I find it strange that it’s impossible to forget the worst times of your life, but easy to forget the good moments. And this person seemed to persist on my skin like a bad tattoo. Like one of those horrific tattoos you get drunk in Ibiza and regret for the rest of your life. In the pre chorus, I use the concept of time to reflect the stages of letting someone go. It takes a minute to fall in love and a year to stay but a lifetime to live without someone you once loved. Favourite lyric: ‘All that’s left is a crossed out heart, we paid the price for pleasure…’ Micro-review: Reflective dream-pop with killer bassline The Art of Letting Go scale: 1 – Easy! I was sitting on this song for a while and it’s one of my favourites off the EP.
HALF OF ME About : Long distance relationships are hard. It’s just the nature of the beast. You have to let go of someone and let them live their life somewhere new without you. And saying hello just to say goodbye all the time seems so unfair. When you were once enjoying the warmth of their skin, you’re left to settle for the cold embrace of FaceTime instead. You can’t fully enjoy precious moments together because they have a sell by date. Someone’s either coming or always going. You can have the best relationship in the world but if you’re always apart, it’s hard to see a future with that person. When thinking of the instrumental for ‘Half Of Me’, I imagined someone walking through an empty airport just about to board a plane. If you listen closely, I included some ambient noises like ‘the fasten seatbelt’ sound and a cabin crew announcement. When people listen to ‘Half Of Me’, I hope they feel like they’re staring out of a plane window at 3am, watching the clouds dance over the night sky, missing their partner on the other side of the world. Favourite lyric: ‘Every bone in my body breaks, every time you board the plane…’ Micro-review: Long-distance relationship comfort song The Art of Letting Go scale : 9 – It was a painfully emotional song to write. So it’ll be strange to relive that feeling when it comes out.
PLEASING PEOPLE About : Throughout my life I’ve been told to not talk too much or take up too much space, to put everyone’s needs before mine. Maybe it’s a result of growing up with the expectations that come along with being a woman. Maybe it comes from a strong desire to be liked. My natural default is peace keeper, trying to mediate every situation I come across, avoiding conflict at all costs. But being pulled in every direction is exhausting if you forget you’re the one steering the ship. Recently, I’ve fully come to terms with the power of a simple word. No. No, I don’t feel comfortable. No, I’m not going out tonight. No, I refuse to be the idea you have of me anymore. One day I woke up and learnt to trust my gut instincts. And soon enough, I realised that my inner compass could be stronger than other people’s expectations. If you are people pleaser, just know we are more powerful than we think! You have more agency over your own life than you know. Favourite lyric: ‘Why would I keep the peace at the expense of mine? / I would bite my tongue but then I’d bleed all night…’ Micro-review: Angry pop for empowered women The Art of Letting Go scale : 1 – I’m ready for this song to belong to my fellow people pleasers! It has a strong message so I hope it connects.

London Indie Pop Artist Alex Amor Shares New Single “Pleasing People” Lifted From Latest EP ‘The Art Of Letting Go’
London-based, Glaswegian indie-pop artist Alex Amor has released her new single “Pleasing People,” the final track to be revealed from her just recently released EP, The Art of Letting Go .
“Pleasing People” is a punchy, 90’s-flecked indie jammer, tackling patriarchy and, in the words of Amor , “ trying to make sense of a world that never plays fair “. With her direct and emotionally honest approach to songwriting, the track carries the more light hearted elements of your usual pop track, with the lyrics taking a hard look at female expectations, the power dynamic of the patriarchy and exactly how done Amor is with playing the expected, prescribed role. It’s an easy pop track, with an anthemic quality to it that gives just the right amount of ‘stick it to the man’ vibes. The accompanying music video shows Amor travelling through the city on her bike, keeping the focus on the track itself with a lighthearted visual accompaniment that’s shot like a ‘90s classic movie.
Speaking further on the release of the new single, Amor shares: “ Throughout my life I’ve been told to not talk too much or take up too much space, to put everyone’s needs before mine. And soon enough, I realised that my inner compass could be stronger than other people’s expectations. If you are people pleaser, just know we are more powerful than we think! You have more agency over your own life than you know .”
The Art Of Letting Go represents a shift in focus and a determination to look ahead to the future. Amor shares that the EP is “… a collection of songs dedicated to the universal theme of letting go … Letting go of the past, people who hold us back and the things that no longer serve us in life. It’s about getting out of your own way, choosing what’s best for ourselves and surrendering to the moment, taking each day as it comes. My intention for this project is to help people feel uplifted, more at ease and inspire them to find their own ways of letting go .”
Amor’s debut EP Love Language was released in 2021. New single “Pleasing People” and her EP The Art Of Letting Go are both out now via Young Poet.

Chicano Batman are not who you expect them to be

In the summer of 2017, Chicano Batman played a free show at One Colorado, the shopping complex in the heart of Old Pasadena, as part of KCRW’s Summer Nights concert series. The band had just released “Freedom Is Free,” its third album.
Organizers had anticipated a large turnout for the event and warned fans for a week that they expected to reach capacity early.
The place was packed an hour before the band hit the stage. Fans arriving late, many of them Latino, climbed over and crawled under temporary fences installed for crowd control to try to get in to see the hometown heroes play their signature blend of Latin psychedelic, Chicano old-school soul and Tropicalía.
“That was some Beatles s—,” Eduardo Arenas, the band’s bass player, recalled with a chuckle.
“It was awesome because the power went out on the last song,” added lead vocalist Bardo Martinez over food at Highland Park’s breakfast taco joint HomeState.
“Power outages always make for a moment,” said Arenas.
Arenas and Martinez remember that evening of loosely controlled chaos fondly, but are quick to point out that it was a different era for the band, which recently released the new album “Notebook Fantasy” via indie label ATO Records.
Onstage, the band members have abandoned their matching three-piece ruffled suits — a nod to old-school Latin acts on both sides of the border— in favor of a “wear what you feel” dress policy. The quartet also became a trio; longtime drummer Gabriel Villa left the band after the release of 2020’s “Invisible People.”

Self-isolating with Chicano Batman
Chicano Batman’s new record, “Invisible People,” is coming out during a pandemic. But they aren’t worried.
April 22, 2020
Notably, that experimental album, influenced by krautrockers Can and Nigeria’s William Onyeabor, was the first Chicano Batman album to not feature any songs in Spanish, an artistic decision that puzzled some longtime fans who expected the band to stay loyal to the “Chicano” part of its name.
Arenas sees it differently, arguing that the band was always meant to be an experimental project.
“We’re always trying to see where we can go next,” he said. “This is just part of the natural journey we’re on. I think it’s dope to have a fan base that believes in what we’re doing, and we can’t be the same people for 16 years, you know?”
Even the band’s name, which Martinez says he came up with while enrolled at UCLA in the early 2000s, allowed for interpretation and growth.
“I just put the two names together and thought, ‘Damn, that’s a dope band name,’” he said, adding that he drew inspiration from his own involvement in the school’s MEChA chapter. It was this political awakening that made him realize that there was no one way to be Chicano. “That was the whole point, that the band could be whatever we decided it to be.”
If “Invisible People” was a departure from the familiar, “Notebook Fantasy” is the arrival of what Chicano Batman was always meant to sound like.
Working with producer John Congleton, the band recorded at Sunset Sound, the legendary Hollywood studio used by some of the biggest names in rock history.
Commentary: Sunset Sound is one of the last great L.A. recording studios. To lose it would be a disaster.
The legendary Sunset Sound studios in Hollywood is in trouble. If we care about music — its history and its future — we must take notice.
Feb. 20, 2024
“We were in the same place where all these big bands — the Doors, Van Halen — recorded their albums,” said Arenas. “We were in the company of legends and the walls were talking to us.”
The ghosts of some of these legends show up in the recordings. The album’s first single, “Fly,” channels Prince — a Sunset Sound alumnus — through its upbeat funk and sexually charged lyrics. The track’s music video is also a visual throwback to the Purple One’s 1979 eponymous sophomore LP, which featured the musician shirtless on the cover.
“Notebook Fantasy” also marks the return of Spanish-language songs on Chicano Batman albums. “Era Primavera” is a slick, springtime ode to Latin America’s pop balladeers of the ‘70s and ‘80s that starts to bloom by the time it hits the chorus. Arenas takes over lead singer duties in “Hojas Secas” and gets self-reflective in this down-tempo track about the end of a relationship. His song of lament is accompanied by Carlos Arévalo’s wailing guitar, and crescendos with a full-on choir.
“We’re not trying to shy away from them,” Arenas said of their Spanish tracks. Rather, they’re just one of their many musical offerings. “It’s like ‘Yo, here’s your coconut chocolate, here’s your almond with sea salt and here’s your Carlos V [Mexican chocolate bar], we got you bro.”
“We were just trying to have fun in the studio, just geeking out on what potential sounds we could make,” said Martinez.
On Friday, Chicano Batman will take its vast musical samplings on tour, kick-starting a run of 32 U.S. cities in Las Vegas and ending with a homecoming show on June 29 at the historic Kia Forum in Inglewood.
“This journey to the Forum, it’s kind of a mammoth journey that involves everyone,” Arenas said before listing several local bands that came up with them and helped Chicano Batman become better musicians, including Brainstory, Chola Orange and Tropa Magica.
The other group that helped propel their journey: the fans, opinions and all.
“Chicano Batman at the Forum is not an individual act,” he added. “It’s a collective, a movement. You don’t play at the Forum without the people’s power, and so I’m thankful for that.”

Alex Amor is a stunning talent who is going to be among our very best artists. Her Love Language E.P, released last year, is tremendous. I predict that, as she releases more E.P.s and an album, we will see her tour the world and hook up with some of the biggest artists of the time. It would be reductive to label Amor's music simply as Pop.

Alex Amor is a star in the making - I'm calling it now. Her new EP, The Art of Letting Go, accomplishes more in five short tracks than a lot of artists are able to in twice that. Alex's emotive blend of indie-pop has as much in common with Norah Jones as it does with CHVRCHES, the EP's melodies strong and catchy, but not so saccharine you feel like you need a dental filling afterwards.
