How to Cross the Border

Nepal to tibet by air.

Rasuwa-Gyirong Port is the main port used by travelers to go back and forth between Tibet and Katmandu . You will travel from Kathmandu to Gyirong Port via the China-Nepal Highway, and then take another vehicle to Lhasa after security checks at the port.

The distance from Kathmandu to Gyirong Port is about 130km (108 miles), and it takes approximately 6 hours by car .

From Gyirong Port to Lhasa, it is about 1,100km (700 miles), and normally a night stay in Shigatse is advisable.

The road trip is spectacular because the route traverses the Himalayas and the Plateau of Tibet, and there are many tourist attractions to visit on the way.

Documents Required to Enter by Land

A China Group Visa and a Tibet Entry Permit are required if you enter Tibet from Nepal by land . This is different from traveling from a Mainland China city to Tibet.

1. China Visa Requirements

Based on current policy, it requires 4 people in a group to apply for a China Visa and an interview is needed at China's Embassy in Kathmandu .

Travelers are required to apply for a China visa in Nepal if they are traveling to Tibet from Nepal by land. A visa obtained in your resident country or any other country will not be considered valid for this purpose. 10-year China visas are also not available.

Generally, a visa will be issued in 4 working days . This means that you would need at least 4 working days in Nepal when scheduling your trip. Our travel advisor will skillfully integrate this timeframe into your travel plans to ensure that your trip and visa acquisition go smoothly.

What to do to apply for a China visa in Nepal:

  • Submit your passport along with two passport-sized photocopies ( the photos should follow Chinese visa photo rules ) of yourself taken within the last six months (the electronic version of the photo had better be ready as well).
  • Upon arriving in Kathmandu, contact the local agent provided for assistance. The representative will collect your passport, photos (including electronic version), and flight ticket or paid reservation and provide you with a visa application form that you need to fill up.
  • The visa agent will make an appointment for your interview at China's Embassy. Usually, the appointment is scheduled for 1 or 2 days after your arrival. It is advisable to arrange the interview on Day 3. Your local tour guide & driver will provide transfers for you to the Embassy. Your guide will also manage the sightseeing as per the schedule of the visit to the embassy.
  • You will attend the interview with one/two/three other individuals, as a group of four is required to apply for a China Visa. This will not cause any trouble during the visa process. Please be assured that we have successfully undergone this procedure before.
  • During the visa procedure, you will not have your passport with you. Instead, you could get passport copies prepared (or may receive proof or paper stating that your passport is being processed for visa application). The copies (or proof) allow you to travel around and take flights.
  • The China visa processing time is approximately 3-4 days. Once approved, it will be delivered to your hotel.

2. Tibet Entry Permit

The Tibet Permit will be handled on the Tibet side, and you do not need to take any action in this regard. The local tour guide will bring the permit to the Gyrong Border to meet you and present it to customs authorities.

  • 7-Day Tibet Tour including Trekking and Camping
  • 8-Day Lhasa, Nyingchi, and Bome Spring Tour
  • 8-Day Tibet Tour including Tsedang, Shigatse, and Lhasa

We will arrange a private car and a driver to take you to the border . The driver can speak simple English.

It is recommended to depart from your hotel in Kathmandu at 4 a.m. You would arrive at the Chinese port at about 3 p.m. in Beijing time (China is 2 hours faster than Nepal).

The drive from Kathmandu to Rasuwa-Gyirong Port usually takes around 6 hours, including restroom and photo breaks. Although the road from Kathmandu to Rasuwas board can be quite bumpy, the scenic views along the way are extremely rewarding.

During stops at police checkpoints, the driver typically provides a small paper containing his details and possibly copies of your visa (although this is not confirmed). To be on the safe side, it would be advisable to prepare at least 5 copies of your Chinese visa in advance.

Upon reaching the Nepal Immigration Office, you will be greeted by a "border guide" who will assist you throughout the transfer process. They will help you get your passports stamped and escort you to the nearby bridge. At this point, you bid farewell to your driver, and your baggage will be checked by Nepal Immigration.

After the thorough check at Nepal Immigration, you will proceed to walk along a pleasant road for approximately 200 meters to reach China's bridge. There, you will await the arrival of your Tibet tour guide. Once the guide arrives, you will be granted permission to enter the Chinese Immigration Office.

Once the Tibet tour guide provides you with the Tibet permit and all necessary documentation, your immigration process will commence. You will be required to present your Tibet Permit, China Visa, and phones, and have your baggage inspected before being allowed to enter China. During the immigration check, you may be asked a few additional questions, but rest assured that the staff is friendly and helpful.

After all the procedures are successfully completed, you will start your journey in Tibet.

  • 14-Day Tibet Tour including Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasarovar
  • 11-Day Overland Trip from Lhasa to Kathmandu

There are direct flights between Lhasa and Kathmandu. It could be the most convenient and fastest way to travel between China and Nepal. The flight journey is about 1.5 hours. But the number of direct flights is limited. Another choice is to take a flight to Chengdu first and then transfer to Lhasa.

A trip from Nepal to Tibet offers you an opportunity to enjoy the profound Buddhist culture, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes, and explore the hidden connections between the two tourist destinations. There are currently two options for traveling to Tibet from Nepal. You can either take a car crossing Gyirong Port or take a plane to Lhasa Gonggar Airport. Whichever way you choose, all foreign travelers must first obtain the Tibet Travel Permit through a Tibet travel agency before you enter Tibet. Here are details about how to go to Tibet from Nepal and how to get a permit.

Fascinating scenery on the friendship highway

Why Travel from Nepal to Tibet?

The connections between Tibet and Nepal go back to ancient times. Nepal is the only way from ancient India to Tibet. As early as the Tang Dynasty, the Nepalese princess came to Tibet and married Tibet King Songtsen Gampo . Since then, close trade relations have been maintained between the two adjacent kingdoms, and the religious relations between the two places are also very close. So far, many famous Tibetan Buddhist monasteries have been preserved in Nepal, so Nepal has become the kingdom behind Tibet.

If you travel from Nepal to Tibet, you are just following the footsteps of the ancient Buddhist pilgrims who made a promise in their lifetime to visit the holy shrines and temples of these two ancient kingdoms.

You can either board a flight to Lhasa, Tibet from Kathmandu, Nepal or take an overland tour to Tibet. The straight-line distance between Kathmandu and Lhasa is 609 kilometers, while the land distance is about 1,300 kilometers.

Take a plane from Kathmandu to Lhasa

The fastest way and most convenient to reach Lhasa from Kathmandu is by plane. Nepal is the only country that has offered direct international flights to Tibet in the past but it has not yet resumed. Nepal’s main airport is the Tribhuvan International Airport which is around 6 kilometers from Kathmandu's downtown.

Now the direct flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa is remusing, only three direct flights per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On other days, only connecting flights between Lhasa and Kathmandu are available, operated independently by Sichuan Airlines and Air China. It usually takes about 18 hours to get to Lhasa from Kathmandu by air and costs about $520 for a one-way ticket.

Equipped with your passport and China group visa , you can easily board a flight to Lhasa. Upon arrival at Lhasa, your Tibetan tour guide will greet you with your Tibet Travel Permit at the customs.

Travel Tips : The direct flight from Nepal to Tibet will bring you a stunning aerial view of the mountain tops - Mount Everest (8844.43 meters) and the incredible Himalayas. Since there will be a huge ascent from Kathmandu Valley (1,400 meters) to Lhasa (3,658 meters), it is best to take a good rest in the first few days in Lhasa to accommodate the altitude change. >> See more about the flight schedules from Kathmandu to Lhasa.

Take a Car From Nepal to Tibet

If you opt for the overland journey, you should be ready for a great ride across a 1,300-km road trip that usually takes 3 to 5 days to complete. Along the Sino-Nepal Highway , also known as the Friendship Highway, you will cross the majestic Himalayas to Gyirong Port, witness the north face of lofty Mt.Everest at Everest Base Camp , appreciate stunning holy lake Yamdrokts, and finally arrive in Lhasa to worship the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple.

The overland route: Kathmandu → Gyirong → Tingri → EBC → Shigatse → Lhasa

And of course, if you want to have an in-depth Tibet tour and cover Mt.Kailash in your journey , you can turn to the west after crossing the Gyirong Port then go trekking at the holiest mountain Kailash and appreciate the stunning lake Manasarovar. After your visit, get back to the Sino-Nepal Highway and travel to Lhasa. The whole tour takes about 12 days.

The overland route: Kathmandu → Gyirong → Zhongba → Darchen → Saga → EBC → Shigatse → Lhasa

Take a Train from Nepal to Tibet

So far, there is no railway linking Lhasa and Kathmandu. But the railway between Lhasa and Kathmandu is being designed by the governments of China and Nepal. It is said that the famous Qinghai-Tibet Railway will extend from Lhasa to Kathmandu. The first extension project of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway from Lhasa to Shigatse has been completed. In the near future, you might be able to take the train from Kathmandu to Lhasa.

The Necessary Permits for Entering Tibet

As a foreign traveler, you can only enter Tibet from Nepal through an organized group tour. To join an organized tour, you need to secure the necessary documents and permits like the Tibet Travel Permit and the China Group Visa .

Tibet Travel Permit

The Tibet Travel Permit is a "must-have" permit for all foreign tourists who want to enter Tibet via Nepal. It is also referred to as Tibet Entry Permit or Tibet Visa . You cannot board a flight to Tibet or pass through the borders between Nepal and Tibet if you do not have this permit. It can only be applied through a registered Tibet Travel Agency on behalf of the individual traveler. Please confirm your tour and send a scanned copy of your valid passport to your travel agency at least 10 days before your departure date.

However, if you are a journalist, diplomat, or government official, your application for Tibet Travel Permit will be handled by the Tibet Foreign Affairs Office. In other words, all the Tibet Travel agencies can't handle the permit for you.

On the other hand, if you are an Indian passport holder who wants to visit Mt. Kailash, you can secure your Tibet Travel Permit with the help of the Pilgrim Center or Foreign Affairs Office.

At present, any citizen of the 178 countries that have diplomatic ties with China can apply for Tibet Travel Permit.

Tibet Travel Permit is a necessary document to enter Tibet.

China Group Visa

Another necessary document is the China Group Visa. From Nepal to Tibet, you don't need a China Visa but a China Group Visa. Upon arrival at Kathmandu, you can apply for a China Group Visa at the People's Republic of China's Consulate by taking your invitation letter, passport, 2 passport-sized photos with a white background and the visa cost. Or you can entrust your travel agency to process it for you by spending USD20 as the service fee. The processing of this visa usually takes around 3 working days. Hence, you should leave at least 3 days in Kathmandu before your scheduled tour of Tibet. Please note, from May 2023, China Group Visa only issued per 4 participants.

How to Secure a China Group Visa?

There are three requirements to qualify for a group visa.

  • You need an official China group visa invitation letter coming from the Tibet Tourism Bureau.
  • There should be a minimum of four persons in your group.
  • All your group members should enter and leave Tibet at the same time through the same entry point and exit point.

China Group Visa

Nota Bene: We suggest you leave more than 3 working days in Kathmandu as the Chinese Embassy only accepts visa applications between 10 am to 12 pm on workdays. If you want to get your China Group Visa in 3 days, you need to submit it between 10 am and 12 pm in the morning of Mon till Wed, you can get your China Group Visa at 5 pm on Wed till Fri. Please contact our travel consultants for professional advice .

Typically Asked Questions from Our Clients

Asked by Susa***

I would like to visit Tibet from Nepal in July or August 2024. I will be by myself. What Document do I need and how do I go about it. I think I might fly one way and take a car on the way back to Katmandu. Thank you Susan

Merry

Dear Susan,

According to your inquiry, I recommend 7 days Lhasa Mt. Everest Kathmandu Overland group tour for you. You can take a connecting flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa via Chengdu. After the tour, we can arrange a jeep to send you back to Kathmandu.

Asked by Ali ***

Can you quote me for a max 7 night trip from Katmandu to Tibet. I can leave on Nov 4 and have to be back on Katmandu airport around noon on Nov 11.

Jennie

Dear Ali****,

We can arrange a tour for you from Kathmandu to Lhasa then return to Kathmandu in November.

There's no direct flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa now. I suggest you take a flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa via Chengdu. Then you can have a 7-day Lhasa Mt. Everest Kathmandu Overland Tour to Kathmandu. You can arrive at Kathmandu airport at night on the last day.

For solo travelers, I suggest you consider our group tour. Currently, we have a group departure from Lhasa on 3 November. Would you consider adjusting your departure date to 2 November from Kathmandu? If you can't adjust the date, we can also arrange a private tour for you. Please let me know your idea.

Asked by Juli***

Hello, now I’m in Nepal until October 22. I would like to ask you a quote for the trip in Tibet, for me/us (probably we are 2 or only me) in the end of September it would be great. How I came back in Nepal after the road trip? Can I come back with bus/car as well (same way) ?Normally people felt bad on high ? Thank you for your help.

Dear Juli****,

Thank you for sending us an inquiry!

As per your request, I recommend 7 days Lhasa Mt. Everest Kathmandu Overland group tour for you. We can open one for you on 29 September if you are booking now. After your Tibet tour, we can arrange a private jeep to take you to Kathmandu from Gyirong Port, which costs USD220.

Now there is no direct flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa but connecting flights via Chengdu are available. I suggest you fly to Chengdu then to Lhasa. As the tour date is very close, I'm wondering if you have got your China visa yet.

Asked by Luan***

Hi, My husband and I are planning a trip to Nepal and Tibet. Since I have been to China in the past and would prefer not to come back, the idea is to get the Tibet permit while in Kathmandu. But a friend says that the Chinese Embassy in Nepal is 'refusing' more than 90% of the applicants. Is that true? Please let us know. We are keen to organize the whole trip through a travel agency - you, but, although there is always a chance of not getting a visa/permit, don't want to invest the money in air tickets, hotel, vacation days if the chances of not getting it are high. I look forward to hearing from you asap.

Dear Luana,

As per your request, we can arrange Nepal & Tibet tour for you on 11 October if you apply for China visa instead of China group visa in Kathmandu and if you go to Lhasa from Kathmandu by plane not by road.

If you prefer to travel to Lhasa from Kathmandu overland, you are required to apply for China group visa. However, China group visa application requires 5 applicants to present together for an interview and have their fingerprints collected. In addition, 5 applicants should leave China from the same depart port at the same time. That's why your friend says that the Chinese Embassy in Nepal is 'refusing' more than 90% of the applicants. I suggest you apply for China visa and fly to Lhasa from Kathmandu then go back to Kathmandu overland.

Asked by Jami***

Hi I am a Canadian citizen and am cycling around the world. I would like to visit Tibet in April 2023. Can I fly to Lhasa with my bicycle and then cycle to Kathmandu? Is there a requirement to be in China for 90 days before travelling to Tibet?

beatrice

Dear Jamie, Thank you for sending us an inquiry! This is Beatrice from Great Tibet Tour at your service. According to the policy 2019, you can take your own bike to cycle from Lhasa to Kathmandu. But still, a tour guide and a vehicle should be equipped. And the info should be added to your Tibet travel permit. Right now, Tibet is still closing and it's very uncertain about your trip next April. There's a quarantine period lasting 7 days to enter China. China's government do not issue tourist visa at the moment and the Tibet tourism bureau requires 90 days' stay in China for issuing permits. So I'm afraid it's difficult to get there. You may contact us later, in February of 2023. If Tibet opens in April, we should be notified then.

Best Travel Seasons for Tibet Tour Via Nepal: A Guide to Planning Your Adventure

Tibet and Nepal are popular travel destinations for adventure and cultural experiences in Asia. However, their climates differ significantly, with Tibet having a high-altitude plateau sub-tropical climate, while Nepal has a more varied climate dependent on season and altitude.

For an optimal trip to Tibet, travelers should visit from April to June and September to October, avoiding the rainy season. This period offers clear skies, mild temperatures, and excellent trekking conditions. The peak period for travel is from June to October. During these months, temperatures remain moderate, with no rainfall.

Nepal’s peak travel season is from October to May, during the dry season. However, weather conditions differ based on altitude. December to March is not ideal for visiting higher altitudes of the Himalayan Mountains due to heavy snowfall and intense cold. The best times to visit are during the spring and autumn seasons.

Nepal’s monsoon season occurs from June to late September, making it less ideal for travel to southern low-altitude areas. However, the dry season presents an opportunity to explore the plains and jungles of Nepal and experience various adventure sports.

In conclusion , while Tibet and Nepal share a region, travelers should consider the best time to visit based on climate and preferences. By carefully planning and timing trips, visitors can fully enjoy the natural beauty and excitement of these unique destinations.

Travel to Tibet and Nepal: Essential Guide to Planning Your Adventure

Driving by the mountain Gurla Mandhata in Burang, Tibet.

Tibet and Nepal are some of the most popular places in the Himalayan region and no surprise that many people want to visit both at the same time. They are located nearby, and there is a choice of a short flight between them or a beautiful road connecting Lhasa and Kathmandu. In this article you will find information about documents required to travel to both Tibet and Nepal, information about the ways of traveling, when to visit and where to start your adventure.

VISA REQUIREMENTS

If you travel from tibet to nepal.

UNESCO World Heritage site Potala Palace in Lhasa

You will arrive in Tibet from China either by plane or on a train. First, most of the visitors will need to apply for a Chinese visa in their home countries. It typically takes about one week.

After you have your visa, your travel agency will arrange a special permit for you to visit Tibet . It will additionally take about 15 days.

That means you should start planning your trip 1 month in advance .

You will also need Nepalese visa when you enter Nepal (either at the overland border or in the airport). Most visitors are eligible for visa on arrival.

If you travel from Nepal to Tibet

Kathmandu's Durbar Square, Nepal

Nepal has a very relaxed visa policy. Most of the travelers can receive their Nepalese visa upon arrival at the airport.

Read about traveling to Kathmandu, visa on arrival requirements and things to do in the capital of Nepal .

When you travel to Tibet from Nepal, you will also need a Chinese visa. It won’t be a regular visa, but a Chinese group visa . It is a single entry visa, and it is issued on a separate paper. You can receive it as early as in 3 working days with urgent service or save some money and apply for 5 days service.

While waiting for your visa, you can travel in Nepal.

Even though it only takes 3-5 days to apply for a Chinese group visa, you still need to arrange your Tibet tour in advance. Your travel agency has to apply for an invitation letter for you, as well as Tibet travel permit. It can take approximately 15 days.

If you started planning your visit very close to your travel dates, traveling through Nepal can save you some time on processing required documents. It can take only 15 days to arrange all necessary documents for your visit. We still don’t advise to wait until the last moment.

WAYS TO TRAVEL BETWEEN TIBET AND NEPAL

There are two ways to travel between Tibet and Nepal: flying and going overland. Taking a plane will get you from Kathmandu to Lhasa or from Lhasa to Kathmandu in a very short time. If you are lucky, you will even get a beautiful view of the Himalayas. However, if you want to see the Himalayas from up close, you might want to opt for an overland tour.

Below are the pros and cons of both ways of traveling.

Flight connecting Lhasa (LXA) with Kathmandu (KTM)

Plane flying towards Tibet above the mountain range

There is one daily flight between Lhasa and Kathmandu. Air China and Sichuan Airlines offer nonstop flights and their schedule alternates.

The flight is only 1 hour 30 minutes long. When the weather is clear, you can get an incredible view of the Himalayan mountains while flying over them on that route.

Because the weather in Himalayas changes quickly, delays and schedule changes are not uncommon. Allow some extra time when taking a plane.

Lhasa airport is one of the highest airports on the planet. It is surrounded by a mountain range. Flying from this airport or landing there is a wonderful experience on its own.

Overland Route Through Gyirong Port

Driving towards Tibet-Nepal border at Gyirong

The overland route between Tibet and Nepal goes through the Gyirong port border town. The road is wonderful, and the journey is pleasant.

However, there is one major factor to consider while planning an overland tour. It is much easier to travel from Lhasa to Kathmandu than the other way around because the road goes through high altitude areas, and the order is essential.

Altitude Change on the Overland Route

When traveling from Tibet, most visitors start in Lhasa at an altitude of 3,650 meters above sea level. After initial acclimatizing that takes a couple of days, you are ready to continue to higher areas. On the way to the Nepal border, you will be gradually increasing the altitude. The highest point of the road is in the Everest region, where most visitors usually stay for the night. Rongbuk monastery lies at 5,000 meters, and you will be rewarded with a fantastic view of Everest. After that, altitude decreases to about 1,800 meters by the time you reach the border.

Altitude on the way from Lhasa to Nepal border

When you travel overland from Nepal to Tibet, it is the opposite. You gain altitude very fast, and you cannot acclimatize properly for the elevation of Everest Region. You start at the Gyirong port border (1,800 meters), then ascent to Gyirong town (2,800 meters), and on the next day, you reach an altitude of 5,000 meters in the Everest Region. This route is a good option if you did some trekking in high mountain areas of Nepal. Then you will already acclimatize for altitude and can travel to Tibet.

Overland Route Through Purang/ Taklakot

Burang county in Tibet

One of the most adventurous ways to cross the border between Tibet and Nepal is to travel through Burang or Purang (also known as Taklakot in Nepalese). If you start traveling in Kathmandu, you will first need to take two short flights: Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, and from Nepalgunj to Simikot. From Simikot, you will take a helicopter for a short flight to the border village Hilsa. Once you cross the border, it will be a short ride to Burang.

This gateway takes you directly to the most revered places in Western Tibet – Manasarovar lake and Mount Kailash. That’s why this route is very popular among pilgrims traveling to Kailash from both Nepal and India.

This is also a great option if you love views of the mountains, and the helicopter ride is very picturesque. You will be flying over mountains, river canyon, and forests. It is best to travel during the dry season to enjoy the view and to minimize chances of flight delays.

How long is the overland route

Tibet to Nepal tour map

The reasonably paced tour from Lhasa to Tibet-Nepal border takes at least 7 days. It includes the time necessary for acclimatizing to the high altitude of Tibet, and the actual travel time. Almost no one takes the shortest possible route to the border. Instead, visitors combine travel time with sightseeing in Tibet.

The typical itinerary starts in Lhasa, where you will stay for three days acclimatizing. After that, you will travel to Shigatse through Yamdrok Lake, Karola glaciers, Gyantse monastery, and Kumbum Stupa. At the end of the next day, you will reach the Everest region and stay for the night at Rongbuk monastery. On day six you will drive to the border town. In the morning of the seventh day, your Tibetan guide will take you to the Tibet-Nepal border.

Once you cross the border, you can hire one of the jeeps that are always there waiting for tourists. You can share the ride to lower the cost.

From the border, it usually takes one full day to drive to Kathmandu. However, road conditions in Nepal sometimes won’t allow traveling that fast. It is always better to have some extra time before your scheduled departure from Nepal. The situation on the road varies depending on the time of the year and the weather. We explain it in detail in the next section.

Weather consideration

The road from Lhasa in Tibet to the border is usually good. Sometimes there is construction on a road, often near the border area, but generally, there is a little delay in the travel plans. In Nepal, the landscape is different, and the road is rough. During the dry season, it takes one day to drive from the Tibet-Nepal border to Kathmandu.

During the monsoon season in July – August, the road in Nepal becomes less pleasant, as mudslides occur along the way. It can delay traveling on the road. If you travel during those months, have some extra free time and be prepared to adjust your plans.

PRIVATE VS GROUP TOUR BETWEEN TIBET AND NEPAL

Group Tour stops by the Kumbum Stupa in Tibet

All overland group tours go only in one direction: from Tibet to Nepal. Because you can acclimatize better traveling from Tibet, a lot more people travel in this direction.

For those who did some trekking in high altitude in Nepal, the option to travel overland from Nepal to Tibet is also available. In most cases, it will be a private tour (unless you are traveling as a group).

If you are planning to fly to Tibet and take any tour withing Tibet only, you will have a wide choice of both group and private tours.

Even if you are traveling from Tibet to Nepal, you might still prefer the private tour option.  While the group tour visits only the highlights, you can extend your visit to Tibet for better acclimatizing or traveling to other areas. One of the great options can be extending your visit to see Mount Kailash or possibly even trek around the mountain.

SHOULD YOU VISIT TIBET OR NEPAL FIRST

You can start your trip in either Kathmandu or Lhasa. However, there are some situations, when direction matters.

Here are some of these individual cases:

  • If you are planning close to your vacation dates, it might be easier to start your tour in Nepal. As explained in the visa section, it generally takes a little less time to arrange all paperwork for a visit if you start from Nepal
  • If you want to travel in China as well, it is best to start your tour in China or Tibet and then go to Nepal. If you travel from Nepal, you have to apply for a Chinese group visa. This visa is typically valid for less than a month, and you cannot extend it. That’s why it is best to start a tour in China or Tibet and then travel to Nepal.
  • If you want to take an overland route, it is generally much more comfortable to take an overland route from Tibet to Nepal than the other way around. The reason is easier acclimatizing and choice between private and group tours.
  • If you want to spend only a day or two in Nepal, you should start your trip in Tibet. It takes at least 3 full business days to process your Chinese group visa necessary to enter Tibet. If you are staying only a short time in Nepal or your 3-4 days stay includes weekends, you should plan traveling from Tibet to Nepal.
  • If you travel during long Chinese holidays, you might be better starting your tour in Tibet. During the holidays, the Chinese Embassy in Nepal doesn’t work, and you might have to wait for your group visa for more than a week. There is no way to pre-process your group visa before your arrival in Nepal. If you are not planning to stay in Nepal for long,  you should start traveling from Tibet. The long Chinese holidays happen in May, beginning of October and during Chinese New Year (usually falls on the end of January- February).

Alternatively, hike up to the Everest’s North Base Camp in Tibet. There are ample tour guides and agencies to help you get there. It’s recommended to hire a Tibetan-owned travel agent to help get your adventure rolling along. Be aware that many agencies know travellers prefer to hire Tibetans, which makes for a good deal of imposters.

How to Go to Tibet from Nepal

Last updated: March,07 2020

Traveling to Tibet from Nepal can be done in two ways directly; across the land border at Gyirong Port and overland to Lhasa via the Sino-Nepal Friendship Highway or by flight to Lhasa Gonggar International Airport.

Since the China Nepal railway is still under construction, for those who want to experience a Tibet train tour, they can just get to mainland China from Nepal first, and then take a train to Lhasa.

No matter which way you take, you need to get several permits and visas to enter Tibet from Nepal. And all these travel documents cannot be done by individual. It requires the tour operator of your booked tour to apply for the permit you need to travel into and around Tibet.

To help your arrange your Nepal Tibet tour more fluently, here we offer the detailed transfer guide about how to get to Tibet from Nepal by all means and how to get the required permits before you go.

Getting to Lhasa from Kathmandu by Flight

Obviously, the fastest way to get to Lhasa from Kathmandu is by air, from Tribhuvan International Airport. In fact, the Kathmandu to Lhasa flight is the only international flight connecting Tibet with other countries, and is considered to be one of the most beautiful air routes in the world, flying over several breathtaking mountains, including Mount Everest, Mount Kanchenjunga, Mount Lhotse and other peaks in the Himalayas.

On the flight, you can overlook these spectacular peaks, however, after the trip, stepping off the plane into Lhasa Gonggar International Airport in Tibet, for many travelers, can sometimes mean higher risk of altitude sickness.

 Fly to Lhasa from Kathmandu

Kathmandu to Lhasa Flight Schedule

It takes around one and a half hours to fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa. Recently, there are only two airlines run the non-stop flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa, Sichuan Airlines and Air China.

Please Note: 1.The departure time and the arrival time are both the local time. 2.There is only one flight a day to fly to Lhasa directly from Kathmandu, not Sichuan Airlines or Air China. So you need to check the exact schedule on your preferred date in advance.

Transfer to Kathmandu Airport

Located around six kilometers from the center of Kathmandu, you can reach Tribhuvan International Airport by car, taxi, or bus. The local buses leave from Thamel District of Kathmandu, the main tourist district, several times a day, with the last bus departing at around 6:00pm. Sajha Yatayat buses connect with the international terminal of the airport, while other local buses stop in front of the main gate, around 500 meters from the terminals.

Taxis are also available, and you can get a local or hotel-booked taxi to the airport for around 6-8 dollars, or about 700-900 rupees. It is best to agree on the price before you ride, as the taxis sometimes bump the fare to make more money.

How to Get to Lhasa downtown from Lhasa Airport

Lhasa Gonggar International Airport is located in Gonggar County of Lhoka Prefecture, just over 60 kilometers from Lhasa. It takes around 1 hour 30 minutes to reach the capital from the airport, and you have a variety of options for travel. Shuttle buses wait at the airport for all the incoming flights, and run regularly to the city, costing around 25 yuan per person.

Taxis are also available at the airport, which run to the city for a cost of around 130-200 yuan, depending on your ability to bargain with the driver for the fare. While the taxis are more expensive, they are less cramped than the shuttle buses, and are much more comfortable. And if you are traveling with a few others, the fare can be split to make it cheaper.

Travel from Nepal to Tibet by Overland Journey

The Kathmandu to Lhasa overland tour covers a distance of around 1,300 kilometers, which takes about 7 to 8 days including the sightseeing trips en route.

Overland tour from Kathmandu to Lhasa

This journey is one of the most popular tours for people visiting both Nepal and Tibet together, and is designed to give you the best sights of both regions in one tour with a trip to the Mount Everest Base Camp as a highlight.

The road from Kathmandu runs to the border at Rasuwagadhi, where you will cross over into Tibet and be met by your local Tibetan tour guide, who will take you to the town of Gyirong for your first night in the region.

From Kathmandu to Gyirong Port (1,930m), the roads are a little rough, with a major stretch up to the border being just gravel and dirt roads.

Then, the trip across central Tibet starts with a drive to Mount Everest Base Camp (5,146m), and then on to the second largest city in the region, Shigatse (3,800m). The route, which covers a distance of 464 kilometers, including the side trip to EBC, is one that has mostly good road conditions.

From Shigatse, it is a short hop to Gyantse, and on along the Friendship Highway, past Karola Glacier, Lake Yamdrok, and the spectacular Nyenchen Khangsar Mountain, the highest mountain near Lhasa. The rest sections of the road to Lhasa from Shigatse are all asphalt paved, making the trip faster and more comfortable.

Required Travel Documents for getting to Tibet from Nepal

For all tourists traveling from Nepal to Tibet the following documents are required. Chinese Group Visa and Tibet Travel Permit are required for tourists flying from Kathmandu to Lhasa, while the extra Frontier Pass and the Alien’s Travel Permit are required for the overland journey through the certain areas of Tibet.

 Tibet Travel Permit

Chinese Group Visa

The Chinese Group Visa should be obtained once you arrive in Kathmandu by the tour operator. It replaces the standard Chinese Entry Visa, and cannot be applied for personally. Applications require your original passport and the Tibet Travel Permit, and take three working days to process.

It is applied for once you have booked your tour by the tour operator, and can take up to 15-20 days to process, though this is soon to change to take less time. The application is made by the tour operator on your behalf and requires a scanned copy of your passport for the application process. >> Learn more about how to apply for Tibet Visa from Nepal

More Required Permits for Kathmandu Lhasa Overland Tour

Q: Do I Need to Join a Group to Enter Tibet from Nepal?

No, you don’t. Though you need to apply for the Group Tourists Visa, you are welcome to book your Tibet tour as an individual. Either a private tour or a group tour is OK, but your trip in Tibet is required to be organized and served by a local travel agency.

While there is no official requirement to join a group tour when traveling to Tibet, it can be beneficial in more ways than one. Travel across Tibet can get lonely when traveling alone, and having a few like-minded people to travel with can make the tour even more special, as you can enjoy good company and maybe make some lifelong friends along the way.

Another benefit of joining a group tour is the cost. While a private tour may be just what you need, if you are traveling to Tibet on a budget, a Tibet group tour can help you save a lot of money over the cost of a private tour.

On a group tour, the costs of the guide, vehicle, fuel, and even some rooms (if shared rooms are only available) are shared among the other members of the party, which can greatly reduce the cost of the tour, sometimes by as much as 30 percent. This means that you get more money to spend on those wonderful Tibetan gifts for all your friends back home.

Q: Can I travel from Nepal to Tibet by train?

Unfortunately, there is currently no train that runs direct from Kathmandu to Lhasa, though plans have been underway for many years to build one. So far, the section from Lhasa to Shigatse is already completed, and the other two sections, from Kathmandu to Gyirong Port and Gyirong Port to Shigatse, are still in the planning stages, and are expected to be completed in the near future. However, no actual date for completion has yet been given.

If you really want to take a Tibet train , you can get to the gateway cities in mainland China first, and then take a train to Tibet. Among all the cities offering trains to Tibet, Chengdu is a popular gateway to Tibet for most travelers from Nepal, since it is close to Nepal and has direct flights from Kathmandu to Chengdu.

Getting to Tibet from Nepal is always a popular option for tourists to the plateau, for a variety of reasons. The ease of access to Tibet from Nepal has made it popular to take the overland route from Kathmandu to Lhasa, traveling with your tour guide from Gyirong Port to the Tibetan capital. Flights are also popular, and in the peak season, can be booked up early, so it is essential to book well in advance.

And with us to make all the arrangements on your behalf, getting to Tibet from Nepal has never been easier. Just tell us your travel plan and we will try our best to make the best trip for you.

There are different airlines taking you to different places in Tibet. That means you can start your Tibet tour from Lhasa, Nyingchi, Shigatse and Ngari . Well, more than 80% of our former customers chose to start their adventures from Lhasa because there are many flights and trains to Lhasa. Besides, Lhasa is the best place for high altitude acclimatization. From Lhasa, you can travel southwestward to Nepal. While Ngari, Shigatse and Nyingchi are only connected to a few cities in China.

2) How many days you have planned for your trip?

You decide the trip length. But you have to plan over 4 days  for a Tibet Nepal tour package. If you want to travel overland to Kathmandu from Lhasa, you will need at least 7 days . If you want to cover Mount Kailash in your trip, you have to plan around 2 weeks .

3) Private tour or group tour?

According to local laws, foreigners are not allowed to travel independently in Tibet. All non-Chinese passport holders must take a private tour or join in a group tour, organzied by a China travel agency with planned transportation, accommodation and schedule. A private tour gives you more flexibility to arrange the tour length, itinerary and activities according to your personal interests. You will have your own private tour guide and driver. Traveling with a group tour , you will join other people in a fixed-departure date, and share the itinerary, vehicle and tour guide, which will greatly cut down your expense.

Frequently Asked Questions about Travel from Nepal to Tibet

Tourists who travel to Tibet from Nepal should apply for their China Visa in Kathmandu. That is not something we can negotiate but based on a treaty between China and Nepal. For tourists who have dual nationality, please make sure to use the same passport to enter Nepal and Tibet. With your passport and China Visa applied in Nepal, you can fly or travel overland from Nepal to Tibet.

To fly from any city in China to Tibet, it is a must to have a China Visa first (except Singaporean, Japanese and Bruneians). With your passport and China Visa copies, we can apply for your Tibet Permit. When you check into the flight to Lhasa, you will be required to show your passport, China Visa and Tibet Permit. For Nepal visa, you can easily get it in the border upon arrival.

Before the application of your Chinese Visa in Kathmandu, we need your passport copies to apply for a visa invitation letter from Tibet Tourism Bureau. Once we get the invitation letter, we will send it to our Nepal partner. When you arrive in Kathmandu, they will come to pick up your passports and do the application for you. Instead of a page on your passport, the visa applied in Nepal is a piece of separate paper. You and your friends or travel partner will be on the same visa.

To cross the Nepal to Tibet border or fly to Tibet from Kathmandu, you need to show your passport and the group visa applied in Nepal. The visa is always valid for 30 days. You can use it even you travel to other cities of China. But please remember you and your travel partner need to exit China the same time since the group visa cannot be split or extended.

No, you can not. The Chinese Group Visa application in Kathmandu has to be processed by a local travel agency. The application needs at least 3 working days. We have experienced Nepal travel agency who can help you with the that. You only need to give them your passport once you arrive in Kathmandu and pay the processing fee. They will do the rest and come back to you with the visa.

No, there is no need to wait in Kathmandu while your visa application is in the process. You can travel around Nepal with your passport copies, even take the domestic flights. Our local Nepal partner will handle everything for you.

We will not suggest you travel from Nepal to Tibet if you have a 10 years Chinese Visa. Your visa will be canceled and you need to apply for a Chinese Group Visa. You can fly from Kathmandu to Chengdu or Kunming etc. and then connect to Tibet to avoid the visa application in Kathmandu.

Before the horrible earthquake on April 25th 2015, tourists travel via Zhangmu -Kodari Border. Since then there is no port open for tourists between Tibet China and Nepal. Tourists can only choose to fly between Lhasa and Kathmandu. From Aug. 30th, 2017, the Gyirong-Rasuwa border open to tourists. It is wonderful to travel overland from Tibet to Nepal after visiting to the Everest Base Camp or the Mt. Kailash.

Taking bus is the most economic way to get to Rasuwa from Kathmandu. You can take bus at Gongabu (Kathmandu) Bus Station, also called New Bus Park. It costs only 700 rupees (10USD) and 9 hours. It will be better if you and other tourists share a 4WD vehicle because of the rugged terrain and long driving. It will cost about 30USD per person if there are 7 persons to share the van.

From Kathmandu to Rasuwa border, the road is very bumpy, zigzag, narrow and dusty. There might be landslide in flood season from July to August. Although all this difficulty, the natural scenery on the way is awesome not to mention the section when you drive along the edge of the Langtang National Park. Once you cross the border to Gyirong, all the way in Tibet side are well paved.

Flying into Tibet and then travel overland back to Kathmandu is more popular. There are many tourists who travel to Nepal from Tibet after their China tour. It is easier to form a group. But if your next destination after Tibet is other cities in China, you can also travel overland from Nepal to Tibet.

Gyirong border opens at 10:00am (8:00am in Nepal side) and close at 5:30pm (3:30pm in Nepal side). Normally, if you travel overland from Kathmandu to Tibet, it is suggested that you stay one night in the village Syabrubesi near the Rasuwa border and cross the border early morning the next day.

Beijing bets on tourism diplomacy as soft power tool

Beijing bets on tourism diplomacy as soft power tool

Sangam Prasain

On March 15 last year, China reopened its borders for travel, ending a three-year closure during the Covid pandemic.

As soon as the borders—land and air—opened, and the China-funded international airport in Pokhara was inaugurated, optimism was high. Before the pandemic, market insiders predicted a dramatic surge in Chinese tourists, who were Nepal’s second-largest source market after India before the Covid-19 pandemic.

It didn’t happen.

Nepal received 60,878 Chinese tourists in 2023, a recovery by a third from the pre-pandemic level when Chinese tourists boomed in Nepal.

In the first five months (January–May) of this year, Nepal received 46,671 Chinese, with the highest arrival of 12,093 recorded in March.

While Chinese arrivals slowed, Indian tourists boomed in Nepal, reaching an all-time high of 319,936 individuals, according to the Department of Immigration. Among Indians, only those who come by air are counted as tourists in Nepal.

In the first five months, Nepal has received 148,861 Indian tourists, the highest number of 38,288 recorded in May.

Before the pandemic, India and China were competing neck-to-neck. Now, there is a huge imbalance between the south and north.

Will it change?

On Monday, during the 16th round of the Nepal-China diplomatic consultation mechanism meeting held in Kathmandu, Beijing made a surprise announcement.

It announced plans to promote Nepali tourism in China as part of celebrating 2025 as ‘Visit Nepal Year in China’, which Nepal’s top travel trade entrepreneurs say is a “big statement.” They say they had never before heard China favour any country with such soft power diplomacy.

Will 2025 be the year for the potential great return of Chinese tourists then?

“So far, I haven’t heard or seen Beijing promote any country’s tourism inside China. This is, in fact, a good gesture of neighbourliness,” said Kishore Raj Pandey, chairman of Saathi Nepal Travel and Tours, who was the first person to bring Chinese tourists to Nepal in 2001.

“If it has been announced, Beijing indeed has some policy to encourage Chinese citizens to travel to Nepal.”

Tourism is vital for Nepal’s economy. According to the recently released annual World Travel and Tourism Council research report, Nepal’s tourism sector generated Rs327.9 billion ($2.5 billion) in revenue and supported 1.19 million jobs directly and indirectly last year. The report forecasts that Nepal will generate 1.22 million jobs in 2024. Last year, the country received 1 million tourists.

Some critics say it’s a lofty promise.

Before Monday’s meeting, during the third Nepal Investment Summit held in Kathmandu on April 28, Luo Zhaohui, chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency, announced the waiver of visa fees for Nepalis.

It was implemented on May 1. There was another announcement, too.

“The Chinese government is making arrangements to start new flights from China to Nepal’s two new international airports—Pokhara and Lumbini,” Luo said while addressing the summit.

Nepal’s $216 million international airport in Pokhara, the country’s tourism capital, opened in January last year. Beijing financed it.

Similarly, Nepal’s second international airport in Bhairahawa, built by Chinese contractors, started operating in May 2022 after four years of construction delays. The objectives of both projects are to decentralise economic activities in the new federal setup, attract more tourists, and prevent Nepalis from going abroad.

But only some international flights are operating in the two new shiny airports.

“Under Beijing's renewed diplomacy, there is a possibility of the operation of these two new international airports,” said Basant Raj Mishra, a senior tourism entrepreneur. “Once flights from China come, it will create competition.”

He said Beijing’s announcement represents a great opportunity for Nepal. “We should be prepared for joint marketing and promotional activities. With a proper policy, we can attract 1 million tourists from China alone in 2025. And for this, we need enhanced flight connectivity.”

China is facing many economic obstacles, but Beijing remains optimistic about growth.

Reports show that Chinese tourists hit the road in significant numbers during the recent five-day Labor holidays in May but kept a tight grip on their wallets, reflecting still-weak sentiment in the world’s second-largest economy.

According to a statement from China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, travellers made 28.2 percent more trips, but spending only rose 13.5 percent from the 2019 break.

“Of all the countries, China has the largest number of airlines connecting Nepal but brings the lowest number of tourists,” said Vijay Shrestha, vice president (Administration) at Himalaya Airlines, the Nepal-Tibet joint venture.

There are five airlines currently connecting China. “The traffic is low,” said Shrestha. “It may be due to low consumer confidence.”

Himalaya Airlines has suspended Kathmandu-Beijing flights, and Kathmandu-Shanghai flights are also irregular due to low passenger traffic. Besides, in the other three sectors, the average occupancy is 40 percent,” said Shrestha. “The announcement from Beijing to promote Nepal in China could change that.”

Nepal and China established formal diplomatic relations in 1955, and Nepal-Tibet trade goes a long way back. In 1956, four cities of Tibet, namely Lhasa, Shigatse, Gyantse, and Yatung, were designated as major trading cities for Nepali traders.

Between the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and 1982, few residents of China travelled to foreign destinations other than government officials, students, and a few businessmen.

travel tibet from nepal

In 1983, China allowed citizens from Guangdong Province to travel to the British colony of Hong Kong on organised tours to visit family.

Beginning in 1995, the Chinese National Tourism Administration formalised China’s Approved Destination Status (ADS) policy.

The history of Chinese tourism in Nepal is not long either. Nepal first participated in the China International Travel Fair in 2000 to promote its tourism sector. Before 2000, the Chinese could only travel to Nepal on official visits.

The Chinese government had permitted ADS for Chinese outbound travellers in November 2001. The two countries signed an initial memorandum of understanding on an implementation plan for outbound travel by Chinese people to Nepal on April 16, 2001, laying the groundwork for the ADS.

Nepal was given the Approved Destination Status (ADS) by its northern neighbour in 2002, and in June of the same year, Chinese citizens began visiting Nepal officially for the first time as tourists. Nepal was the 18th nation to receive the status and first in South Asia. In 2002, Nepal got 8,715 Chinese tourists.

Subsequently, the central banks of the two countries signed an agreement on bilateral cooperation that allowed the Chinese currency to be converted into Nepali rupees in a bid to boost bilateral trade, tourism, and economic cooperation.

However, immediately after Nepal received the ADS, arrivals from China fell due to a violent conflict that intensified over 2002-2004, reaching Nepal’s main cities and tourist destinations. Nepal eventually started witnessing a constant growth in Chinese arrivals after June 2009.

Chinese arrivals to Nepal crossed the 100,000 mark for the first time in 2013, mainly due to the improved air links between the two countries. According to the tourism ministry’s statistics, around 93 percent of Chinese tourists were first-time visitors to Nepal.

In 2014, Nepal received 123,805 Chinese visitors.

The 2015 earthquake and India's blockade led to arrivals from China dropping to a four-year low of 64,675 individuals in 2015, down 47.76 percent from 2014.

The surface road at the Tatopani border point, where Nepal used to receive many Chinese tourists, was also blocked.

On December 25, 2015, Nepal announced ‘free visa’ for Chinese tourists, giving them the same treatment accorded to South Asian visitors. In a bid to revive flagging arrivals, the scheme was implemented in January 2016.

Thereon, tourist arrivals from China started rising steadily, and Nepal saw the strongest growth, 46.8 percent, in tourist arrivals from China, with the overall number reaching 153,633 visitors in 2018.

In 2019, Nepal received a record 169,543 Chinese tourists.

The number fell to 19,257 in 2020. In 2021 and 2022, there were 6,198 and 9,599 Chinese tourists in Nepal—mainly diplomats and those stranded in third countries—who came to Nepal when Beijing enforced never-ending lockdowns.

When the Chinese economy started to boom again, Nepali investors pumped money into luxury hotels, which too have multiplied.

Are Tibet and Nepal the Same? The Differences and Similarity of Tibet and Nepal

Tibet and Nepal are both amazing lands of the mighty Himalayas, and are both great places to visit. These two stunning tourist destinations share a large portion of the western Himalayas, including Mount Everest and several others of the world’s highest mountains.

travel tibet from nepal

Why do Most People think Tibet and Nepal are the Same?

Some people mistakenly think Tibet and Nepal are the same due to a few reasons. Firstly, their geographic proximity in the Himalayan mountain range creates confusion. Although they are located on different sides of Mount Everest, this fact may be overlooked.

Tibet and Nepal Topography Map

Secondly, both regions have a rich tradition of Buddhism, leading to the assumption of similarity. However, Tibet and Nepal have distinct cultural practices within Buddhism. Lastly, limited knowledge or exposure to the region can contribute to misconceptions.

Difference 1: landscapes in tibet and nepal.

The biggest difference between Tibet and Nepal is the landscapes in each location. Tibet is a harsh and somewhat arid land, lying on the world’s highest plateau. With an average elevation of around 4,000 meters, the plateau does have a varied landscape, which depends largely on the altitude. With vast open plains and prairies, huge lakes that are dotted across the region, as well as hundreds of smaller lakes too, and an almost uninterrupted transition from plains to mountains, the plateau landscapes in most of the region could not be more different than those of Nepal.

>> Learn more about Tibet and Nepal through different tourist maps

In Nepal, the landscape starts high with the massive mountains of the Himalayas. These tall peaks stretch along its northern border, from west to east, and below them, instead of plains, are the usual lower slopes that can be found below most mountain ranges. Then you travel into the lower foothills, gradually descend as you head south to the southern Terai region, which has an altitude of fewer than 1,000 meters; and finally to the lowland plains that border with India along the southern borders. Nepal also has a varying altitude, with the high mountains transitioning to foothills that are less than 3,000 meters above sea level, the Terai and valleys that are mostly below 1,000 meters, and then the plains, which lie at around 200-300 meters.

Difference 2: Culture in Tibet and Nepal

Even though both Tibet and Nepal are influenced by Buddhism, the culture are different in Tibet and Nepal.

The culture and identity of Tibet are inextricably linked to its Buddhist religion, and religious practice is a major part of the average Tibetan’s daily routine. The culture in Tibet has developed over more than a thousand years of Buddhism in the region, and is partly due to the harsh high-altitude plateau landscape, as well as some influencing factors from India, Nepal, Mongolia, and China. When Buddhism was introduced to the plateau in the 7th and 8th centuries, it exerted a deepest influence on the Tibetan way of life than anything else, and has also changed in the various regions, mostly due to the environmental and geographical differences across the plateau.

Tibetan monks do the kora round Bodhnath.

Nepali culture is a distinct fusion of the Tibet-Mongolian and Indian (Indo-Aryan) influences of more than three thousand years. These influences are the result of a long and varied history of trade, migration, and conquest. Nepal has had a lot more influence from India than from China over the centuries, and while there is a large Buddhist population in the higher mountains, most of the country is Hindu.

Difference 3: Religion and Spirituality in Tibet and Nepal

Religion and spirituality play significant roles in both Tibet and Nepal, but they differ in their religious practices and what you can witness in each region.

In Tibet, Buddhism is the predominant religion, specifically Tibetan Buddhism. The landscape is adorned with magnificent monasteries, such as the iconic Potala Palace in Lhasa, and the vibrant Jokhang Temple. These sacred sites are inhabited by devoted monks who diligently follow their religious path. Exploring Tibet allows you to witness the devoutness of local pilgrims who undertake arduous journeys to visit sacred sites, prostrating themselves along the way.

In Nepal, while Buddhism is also practiced, Hinduism holds a major influence. The country is dotted with temples and pagodas, such as the famous Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. Nepal is known for its spiritual gurus or "Babas," who are revered for their wisdom and spiritual guidance. Witnessing vibrant religious festivals, such as the colorful celebration of Holi and the sacred rituals of Dashain, provides insight into the deep religious devotion of the Nepalese people.

Difference 4: Travel Policy in Tibet and Nepal

Nepal has substantially different travel regulations than Tibet does. As a visitor, all you need is a basic tourist visa, which you can get upon arrival in Kathmandu to enter Nepal, and then you're free to go anywhere you'd like inside the nation.

However, Tibet is somewhat unique. You are required to arrange your Tibet trip with a licensed tour operator in advance, and you will need both a Chinese Visa and Tibet Travel Permit to enter Tibet. Traveling around Tibet is also restricted, and you require permits for the different areas that only the tour operator can obtain. You also need to have a private guide and private vehicle for all travel within Tibet.

Besides, Chinese Visa, Tibet permit is needed for your Tibet tour.

Difference 5: Best Travel Seasons in Tibet and Nepal

The best travel seasons in Tibet and Nepal differ due to their distinct climates and weather patterns.

The best time to travel Tibet is from spring to autumn, with the peak period occurring from April and May and from September to October. Summer is the busiest time for tourism, while the period from November to January is the low season. Despite being accessible year-round, spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are the best seasons for clear mountain views, including Mount Everest. During these periods, the weather is generally stable, and the skies are clearer, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas.

Tibet Gawula Pass

Nepal, on the other hand, experiences distinct rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season, known as monsoon, occurs from June to September and brings heavy rainfall to the region. This period may not be ideal for outdoor activities or mountain views due to cloudy conditions. The dry season, from October to May, is the best time to visit Nepal , particularly for trekking and mountaineering enthusiasts. The weather is generally dry and stable, offering clearer views of the mountains and pleasant temperatures.

When planning a Nepal Tour it is essential to consider your preferences and what you wish to experience. The dry season provides optimal conditions for outdoor activities, while the monsoon season can offer unique cultural experiences and fewer crowds in certain areas.

When it comes to Mount Everest tours , Tibet and Nepal offer distinct experiences:

In Nepal, the Everest region offers a wider range of activities and trekking routes. Besides visiting Everest Base Camp from the South side, trekkers can embark on iconic trails like the Everest Base Camp Trek or the Gokyo Lakes Trek. These routes allow for an immersive experience in the breathtaking Himalayan landscapes, encountering Sherpa culture and picturesque villages along the way.

Nepal Sherpa picturesque villages

If your ambition is to climb Mount Everest, Nepal is the preferred choice. The South side of Everest in Nepal is the more popular and well-established route for mountaineering expeditions. Nepal provides the necessary infrastructure, support services, and experienced guides for those seeking to conquer the summit.

Difference 7: Travel Highlights in Tibet and Nepal

Tourism in Tibet is mostly centered on the Buddhist monasteries, the unique culture, and the stunning landscape, with only a small percentage of tourism dedicated to adventure activities such as trekking. And with its stunning landscapes and unique Buddhist culture, Tibet has something no other destination in the world has.

visit the majestic Potala Palace

The most notable activities in Tibet include exploring the historic monasteries of Lhasa, such as the majestic Potala Palace and the revered Jokhang Temple. Embarking on a tour of the holy lakes, such as Yamdrok and Namtso, provides breathtaking natural beauty.

Nepal, however, has a different perspective, and while culture and landscape do come into it, the main reason people travel to Nepal is for the amazing trekking that can be done in the Everest and Annapurna Region, as well as the other adventure activities you can find across the country.

In Nepal, the capital city of Kathmandu offers captivating sightseeing opportunities, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Durbar Square and the sacred Pashupatinath Temple. The scenic city of Pokhara entices with its outdoor activities, such as trekking, paragliding, and mountain biking amidst stunning mountain vistas. Exploring Chitwan National Park provides a chance to encounter wildlife on an exciting safari adventure.

While there are a lot of things that Nepal and Tibet have in common, there are many things that are different about these neighbors.
