CREATE YOUR DREAM SAFARI HOME...

Naretoi design.

The masterplan below has been designed around an old family farm that has been "re-wilded" and the plots were positioned to make the best out of the incredible views available, the vegetation, natural streams and the meanders of the Mara River. Each 5 acre plot has a sense of space and privacy with open and uninterrupted views; a perfect blank canvas on which to create a dream safari home.

Our homeowners have worked with some of Kenya's best architects and contractors who have created some incredible safari getaways, unique to suit their own style, whilst blending in to this environment.

RIVER FRONT

Overlooking the Mara River, these plots are perched high on the river banks with views stretching up or downstream over the Mara River. Hippos and crocodiles bask in the river below and the riverine forests attract an array of unique birdlife.

PLAINS VIEWS

These plots are strategically positioned on the edge of the Naretoi Euclea forests opening out onto the plains with a backdrop of the dramatic Kileloni hill. There is a great feeling of space and homeowners can enjoy plenty of activity of plains game with zebra often coming down onto their lawns, hyenas loping by in the evenings and wide open views across the Mara plains.

CREATING MEMORIES IN THE WILD...

Reconnect with nature, and each other...

Safari with family and friends is an enriching experience and Naretoi provides the perfect opportunity for parents, children and grandparents, to bond and create life-long memories.

At Naretoi you can build your dream home and create a sanctuary for adventure with the chance to inspire future wildlife conservation and share quality time with children of all ages!

A TYPICAL DAY...

Imagine waking up in your own home in the Maasai Mara, to freshly brewed coffee brought to your own verandah. A wake up call of “Hodi , Jambo!” as you emerge from your bed and push open the beautiful doors you designed with the help of a local craftsmen.

HOUSEitWILD_Silverless_6R1A1919_HIGHRES.

THE MORNING RITUAL...

You step outside and feel the first rays of light of the day warm your face as they shine over the dramatic Kileleoni Hill not far away. The kaleidoscope of sounds and aromas, including wild Jasmine, freshly cut grass, weaver birds chatting away as they build their homes, a pair of crested cranes flying overhead; these will all become familiar treats for your senses. Enjoy the daily ritual as you sit on your hand-carved Lamu bed, have your first sip while watching the hippos wallowing in the Mara River at the edge of your beautifully mowed lawn.

GET OUT IN THE WILD...

Take a morning game drive into the community-owned Enonkishu Conservancy, looking out for the familiar resident leopards on the way, often seen wandering for cover in the Euclea forests of Naretoi after a busy night roaming for prey. Drive back home for a long lazy brunch or lunch, with the family on your deck overlooking the river. Then after an afternoon siesta maybe you could play a game of tennis then take a dip in your pool before you all pile into your car with your familiar and incredibly knowledgeable Maasai guide (who is now a lifelong friend), to take a drive up past the rhino sanctuary onto the edge of the Kileloni Hill, where you’ll sit on canvas camp chairs, gin and tonic in hand, around a fire, with your favourite people around you. Sit back and watch the spectacular sunset over the Mara plains, which stretch as far as the eye can see.

Cheetahs on Safari

NIGHTS IN THE AFRICAN BUSH...

Meander in your safari car back at dusk through the safari gate, keeping your eyes peeled for the resident leopard. Get home and watch the stars by the campfire, enjoy supper with vegetables picked from the local shamba and then retire to your bed, listening to the not-so-distant roars of the local lion pride and the whooping hyenas.

Wake up. Repeat.

LUXURY LODGE KENYA

This luxury lodge Kenya boasts a fantastic location in a fertile valley between the Aberdare Mountain Range and Africa’s second highest mountain, Mount Kenya. Both of these forest-covered mountains act as vital ‘water towers’ to the nation, generating and storing water like giant living sponges to be slowly released through their myriad of streams. Exciting and enriching excursions can be arranged to visit both areas of interest. By road, the entrance to the Aberdare National Park is just a short drive away from the lodge, making it a perfect day trip destination. Guests can also explore both mountain ranges in our private helicopter for an adrenalin-filled and unforgettable adventure.

Rich soils surround this luxury lodge Kenya in the valley bottom, meaning the landscape is dotted with forest and grasslands making it a haven for wildlife. It’s also ideal for agriculture and Solio Lodge offers a range of informative excursions to several nearby farms which use innovative sustainable practices we love to support. Tour a working coffee plantation to learn how your morning coffee is grown, harvested and processed; visit a family-run flower farm specialising in the most delightfully scented garden roses; take a tour around the farm which grows and makes all the natural, aromatic and deliciously fragrant products we provide for you in the rooms at our camps and lodges. More importantly, the productive soils enable us to grow an abundance of scrumptious fresh produce in our kitchen garden at the lodge for our guests to enjoy.

Kenya Accommodation

For over a hundred years, a safari in Kenya has fascinated adventurers and romantics from all over the world. The magic of Kenya is in the sheer diversity of landscape, wildlife, human cultures and experience. Kenya safari lodges make the most of what the country has to offer with their luxury accommodation.

Here you’ll find snow-capped peaks and rolling savanna, unspoiled beaches and tropical rainforest, herds of elephants and flocks of flamingo, nomadic tribesmen and dhow sailors.

Kenya accommodation is as diverse as the country itself, featuring high-end safari lodges, luxury game lodges and the finest tented camps in Kenya.

Safari Lodges, Game Lodges & Tented Camps in Kenya

A long-standing highlight of Kenya’s safari circuit, 392km2 Amboseli was set aside as a wildlife reserve in 1899 and made a national park in 1974 .

Laikipia Plateau , dominated by livestock ranches in the colonial era, has since been transformed into one of East Africa’s finest and most exclusive wildlife destinations.

Kenya accommodation offers travellers exquisite places to stay here, from world-class Kenya game lodges to top Kenya safari lodges and incredible Kenya tented camps.

Extending northeast from a shared border with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park , the 1510km2 Masai Mara is the most famous and popular safari destination in Kenya , if not anywhere in Africa. Offering some of the country’s best Kenya safari lodges, the region is not to be missed.

Rising to 5199m, Mount Kenya is the second-tallest in Africa , topped only by Mount Kilimanjaro , and is linked to the more westerly 3999m Aberdare Range by an elevated grassy saddle. The sheer basaltic cliffs of the Rift Valley northwest of Nairobi hem in a classic East African landscape of open savanna studded with jagged volcanic outcrops and strung with beautiful lakes.

Wherever you go in this wonderful country, Kenya game lodges, Kenya safari lodges and Kenya tented camps offer a level of luxury you won’t soon forget.

The cluster of national parks and reserves set in the semi-arid lowlands running broadly northeast from Mount Kenya includes some of the country’s most rewarding safari destinations. In part, this is because they protect a very different fauna to their more southerly counterparts. In Kenya, tented camps get you close to these species with excellent game guides and trackers.

Kenya’s gorgeous Indian Ocean coastline is the ideal place to chill out on the beach after a few days on a dusty safari. For a country often billed as the ultimate home of the safari, Kenya can also lay claim to being one of the world’s great beach destinations.

About Angama

More than a place, Angama is the simple belief in looking after one another — our guests, our team and our neighbours, both human and wild.

Swahili for ‘suspended in mid-air’, Angama offers high-touch safari experiences in one-of-a-kind locations across East Africa.

A Different Style of Safari

Breathtaking views, warm Kenyan service, contemporary African design and intuitive guiding are just some of Angama’s signatures. Meet our lovely properties below:

Angama Mara

The flagship lodge sitting 1,000 feet in the air overlooking the Maasai Mara, where days are spent exploring its incredible wildlife diversity and guests are always spoiled for choice. Each of the Tented Suites are perched along the Great Rift Valley’s edge, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls providing unparalleled views.

Angama Amboseli

An intimate lodge of just 10 suites in a private sanctuary, renown for its density and diversity of wildlife. Set in a Fever Tree forest against the famed backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak, here is where some of the last Super Tusker elephants roam.

Angama Safari Camp

Find yourself amidst the action of the Great Migration and the Mara’s abundant wildlife in this light-footprint tented camp. With a 13-member private staff — a Camp Host, Butler, Chef, two Guides — including two private vehicles. Staying in the park means two hours of extra game drives at times when the animals are most active (before sunrise and just after sunset).

Endless Ways to Spend Your Days

Days at Angama are as action-packed or as gentle as you prefer. Home to Africa’s great mammals, guests in the Mara can experience everything from hot-air ballooning to beading with the Maasai Mamas. In Amboseli, Kimana Sanctuary is yours to explore whether on foot, at night — or simply stare at the mountain and watch the clouds float by.

ANGAMA AMBOSELI

ANGAMA MARA

The Perfect Stay

We’re often asked, ‘How many days should one stay’? The truth is, there is never enough time, but the perfect stay might look something like this:

Touchdown at Angama Mara’s private airfield where a warm Kenyan welcome awaits you. Enjoy a delicious lunch out on the baraza while taking in the breath-taking view of the Mara below and the endless sky. After you settle into your tent, meet your Guide and descend into the Mara Triangle and begin your adventure.

Head out early on a full-day exploration of the Triangle. Enjoy a picnic breakfast or lunch — or both — under a desert date tree somewhere in the middle of nowhere, along the Tanzanian border. After an exciting day out, return to the lodge just in time for the sundowner Boma, as you sip on a gin and tonic while enjoying a Maasai warrior performance.

Join one of our Maasai naturalists and discover the Great Rift Valley on foot, learning about the flora, fauna through a traditional Maasai perspective. Back at your tent, enjoy a pampering massage on your private deck then spend the afternoon on a long lazy lunch in Shamba, or head out for a delightfully slow safari.

A very early start to catch a sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the Mara plains. Toast the morning’s flight with bubbles and a delicious breakfast in the heart of the Triangle, before a gentle safari back to camp in time for lunch and an afternoon at your leisure by the swimming pool. Tonight, experience Angama Mara’s lantern-lit signature Forest BBQ.

Head off on a morning drive followed by breakfast on the deck of your tent. Lunch is a romantic affair, recreating the magical picnic scene from the classic movie, Out of Africa, on the very site it was filmed. Later, join the Maasai Mamas in the Beading Studio and try your hand at their craft or ask them to bead something for you.

How to Get Here

Both Angama Mara and Angama Safari Camp are just a short 45-minute flight from Kenya’s capital of Nairobi. Guests can travel on the multiple daily scheduled flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, or opt for a private charter straight to Angama’s airfield from Nairobi’s main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International.

Angama Amboseli is also reachable by daily scheduled 45-minute flights from Nairobi or by private charter directly to its airfield.

Various international airlines, as well as the national carrier, Kenya Airways, offer direct flights to Jomo Kenyatta International from hubs all over the world.

“out of africa“.

We stayed for 5 nights at Angama Mara and we were so sad to leave. Apart from the wonderful wildlife including predators, the ambience of the camp was remarkable. Most important, the staff here couldn’t have been more attentive. Our butler Caroline was a real sweetheart and couldn’t do enough for us. Our guide Jackson showed great skill in discovering elusive predators. I am writing t …

The most amazing place!

Where to begin? My Husband and I found ourselves out of words to describe how amazing our stay at Angama Mara was. It was truly the most amazing trip we have ever been on. Especially thanks to the staff! We just kept saying we couldn’t believe what we were experiencing. We booked a signature stay which included a hot air balloon ride, massages, an Out of Africa lunch & private saf …

This place is incredibly special. Our group of 4 ladies visited over the summer and had a wonderful time. The property is exceptional, as are the views. We enjoyed every aspect of our stay, but our favorite part was the people. The staff go above and beyond to make the entire experience extraordinary. We made such special memories and I can’t wait to bring my family and kids bac …

Incredible honeymoon

Wow where to even begin…. We had the most incredible time at Angama for part of our honeymoon. From the moment we were picked up at the airstrip to the second we left on our plane, the service, hospitality, and every little detail of our trip far exceeded any of our wildest dreams or expectations. Truly the best trip we have ever been on, and my husband and I are pretty seasoned trave …

Absolutely Stunning, incredible experience

Not sure where to start, but this lodge is fantastic and the whole experience truly memorable, I couldn’t recommend enough. From getting picked up from the Mara airstrip by our Guide for the week Jeremy, who I can’t praise enough, nothing was too much and his knowledge was incredible, plus his obvious and clear love of nature was enduring…This is such a special place, we was planning …

This place is heaven on earth!!!

It is hard to find words to convey the beauty of Angama Mara. High up on the escarpment overlooking the Mara, the views are just incredible. Add to that the warmth of welcome and care from all of the Angama staff, slick modern dining spaces, beautiful luxury tented rooms, amazing food and all the delights of the Mara on the doorstep, it really is a taste of heaven on earth. After dinner, you can either retreat to the privacy of your room or chalet and reflect on the experiences of the day or share a few drinks with other guests in the lounge or by the water hole of the lodge or tented camp.

 • I have been on two glamping safari trips in Africa on two very different budgets.
 • My all-inclusive stay was great but my cheaper glamping experience was fine, too.
 • Private game reserves are actually the most important thing to splurge on, not accommodations.

I've been on two African safari trips . Both involved glamping but on completely different budgets.

My first more affordable trip, a lodge in South Africa with separate safari excursions, cost me about $1,100. My second, an all-inclusive lodge in Tanzania, cost me about $4,000 after a 50% off deal.

Here's how the two compare and what I think you should look for before you plan an African safari .

The first time I went on a safari, I went to Kruger National Park in South Africa. My affordable safari experience was at Jackalberry Ridge, where some tents cost $80 a night.

The first time I went on a safari, I went to Kruger National Park in South Africa. I didn't book a tour package, instead opting to stay at affordable lodging and book safari day trips to the park.

I stayed five nights near Kruger and one night in Johannesburg before my flight home. I spent around $1,100 for lodging, safari tours, a rental car, and food (not including flights).

After landing in Johannesburg, I rented a car ($130 for five days) to drive to my lodging in Marloth Park, a town bordering the edge of Kruger National Park.

I was staying at Jackalberry Ridge , a self-catering accommodation with no on-site restaurant, no room service, and limited housekeeping.

The one-bedroom tents at Jackalberry Ridge go for as low as $80 a night, and two-bedroom tents go for $135.

When I checked in late, there was no one at the reception desk — just an envelope with my name on it containing my keys and a map.

I had booked a two-bedroom unit (two tents), but my friend couldn't come at the last minute. My main tent felt pretty spacious, with a king bed and a living-room area.

I had booked a two-bedroom unit (two tents), but my friend couldn't come at the last minute. Since I couldn't change the reservation, I still stayed in the two-bedroom unit and my friend paid her share.

The campsite came with a small pool to dip in, but it was covered as the weather was pretty cold.

Each unit had a private bathroom and kitchen in a building separate from the tents, so I needed to leave my tent to use the bathroom at night.

This is glamping, so I had access to running water and a flushing toilet. I had hot water, but I found it went from scalding hot to cold in a few seconds.

I ended up taking quick showers and just washing my hair with cold water, which wasn't ideal since it was a little chilly in the morning.

It's also worth noting that Jackalberry Ridge was renovated recently, so the issue I had with hot water may have been fixed now.

The bathroom was standard, with a tub, shower, and toilet.

It's also worth noting that Jackalberry Ridge was renovated recently, so the issue I had with hot water may have been fixed now.

The kitchen was well-equipped with things like pots, a microwave, and a sink, so I could cook meals or heat up leftovers.

I also had access to a kitchen in the same building as the bathroom.

I signed up for a couple of day safaris and did one at night.

Although I had a rental car and could've done a self-drive safari around Kruger, I didn't trust myself to spot animals while focusing on the roads.

Instead, I signed up for a couple of day safaris and one night safari. The safari tour prices often don't include the park entrance fee (about $25 per person per day), which I paid when I got to the entrance.

My three safari trips and park fees came to around $280.

I saw a lot on the safari, including zebras, impalas, kudus, and giraffes. I saw lions and a leopard, although only from afar with binoculars. For my next safari trip, I leveled up.

I saw a Travelzoo deal for an all-inclusive safari at Taasa Lodge , a five-star luxury safari in Tanzania.

The deal was $6,000 for two people for a whole week — the lodge is usually $12,950 for two for seven nights. It was still a splurge, but I'd be saving more than 50% on a bucket-list experience.

The package came with seven nights of lodging, two safari activities a day, three daily meals, and drinks.

Still, we spent more than the original advertised price. There are obligatory "daily government park fees" and "daily concession fees" that added about $893 per person to our bill.

We also had to take a regional flight to get to Taasa, which was more expensive than my rental car in South Africa.

To redeem the Travelzoo deal, we had to complete our booking through a specific travel agency.

We ended up opting for an all-inclusive add-on package which includes the $893 fees above, domestic airfares from Arusha to Taasa (which would already cost around $600), and our agency arranging our Tanzanian tourist visa and airport transfers. The add-on also included extra activities at the resort (more on that later).

Overall, we paid $1,715 per person on top of the $3,000 each for the lodge stay.

I hadn't anticipated paying so many extras, but it was nice to have someone take care of the logistics of getting to the resort.

When I arrived at the lodge, the staff greeted me with a glass of juice and a wet towel to refresh myself.

My tent was quite spacious. The shower's hot water was great and we had double sinks we could get ready at.

There's a main lodge with a communal living room, dining area, and bar.

We got breakfast at the buffet in the main lodge unless we were going on a morning safari.

Most people ate dinner in the dining room, but we could've requested to have food brought to our tent.

The pool was on the small side, but certainly had great views.

I didn't end up using it as my afternoons were filled with safari, and the mornings and evenings were chilly.

We also passed a small pool next to the main lodge.

The pool was on the small side, but certainly had great views.

I didn't end up using it as my afternoons were filled with safari, and the mornings and evenings were chilly.

On the mornings with an early safari, we had a simple breakfast next to our Land Cruiser.

Safari breakfasts consisted of hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, doughnuts, bacon and sausage, fruits, and orange juice. Staff also made French-press coffee, which we could spike with cream liqueur.

Our Land Cruiser had a cooler of beers and sodas in the back, too.

At the private game reserve, we got pretty close to wildlife.

Taasa is located inside a private game reserve, which means staff can pretty much drive anywhere within it. This was a huge leg up from my day trips in Kruger National Park on my last safari.

Inside national parks like Kruger or Serengeti, you're only allowed to drive on designated roads for safety reasons (both for the tourists and the animals).

But in a private reserve, guides can drive offroad. Plus, the guides communicate with each other when they find something special.

We also left the reserve to spend a couple of days going into Serengeti National Park, as there were things you could only find there instead of within the private reserve.

For example, I'd planned my trip to take place during the Great Migration, and I wanted to see wildebeests crossing the Mara River.

We also went to Serengeti to find rhinoceros and hippopotamus.

We saw a bunch of animals in the private reserve and Serengeti.

The main course was usually some type of Western food, and there was always a vegetarian option.

It would've been nice to be offered more typical Tanzanian dishes, though. Every dinner at the resort consisted of three courses: soup, an entrée, and a dessert.

The main course was usually some type of Western food, and there was always a vegetarian option.

It would've been nice to be offered more typical Tanzanian dishes, though. For me, part of the fun of traveling is learning about different countries' cuisines.

I also had access to an open bar in the main lodge. Staff could make simple cocktails, and there was lots of beer and wine. The drinks were all included with the price of the stay (except for fancy Champagnes and select wines).

One morning, we had a special breakfast on the plains.

On one day of the trip, we had a special bush breakfast. It was one of the extra activities we got with that special add-on package.

Instead of our usual safari breakfast, we had freshly prepared omelets in the wild.

When you're offroading looking for wild animals, you can end up pretty far from a proper toilet.

On most safari days, the car stops (when guides think it's safe), and people go behind the car to do their business.

This was the only time we had this portable toilet while out on a safari. We also got another special treat in the bush that morning — a toilet!

When you're offroading looking for wild animals, you can end up pretty far from a proper toilet.

On most safari days, the car stops (when guides think it's safe), and people go behind the car to do their business.

This was the only time we had this portable toilet while out on a safari. On my budget safari day trips at Kruger, we'd have to wait until we reached a rest-stop facility.

After breakfast, we were back in safari mode.

We found a family of lions, and as we were in the private reserve, we were able to stay and watch the cubs play for quite a while.

At Kruger, when lions are spotted, traffic starts backing up on the road as all the safari cruisers stop to look, so you can't stay too long.

Here, we knew no one else would be coming.

Again, we spent a lot of time watching lions.

Our trip ended with a great happy hour and outdoor dinner.

Other activities that were part of our add-on package included a visit to a Maasai village in Kenya and a special happy hour and barbecue dinner.

And, for our journey home, the travel agency took care of everything, including transfers, until we boarded our international flight.

My big takeaway is that it's really worth paying to be inside a private reserve.

In my opinion, the difference between these two safari trips that's the most worth paying for is being in a private reserve.

After all, the main reason I fly to Africa is for the safari, not the glamping.

I much preferred my lodging at Taasa, mostly because of the bathroom. But if I hadn't had the 50% off deal, I'm not sure the full price would've been worth it.

Still, it was a wonderful experience, and if I had more money, I may feel differently. Even so, the budget glamping was pretty comfortable and just fine for a week.

But again, as far as the safari experience goes, the private reserve is hard to beat. Being able to go offroading and get closer to the animals is quite the experience.

And if luxurious lodges are out of the question, private reserves can also be visited more affordably. Some lodges inside private reserves, like Shindzela or Rhino River Lodge, can cost around $250 per person per night.
