15 Best Places to Visit in Maldives

Left to the mercy of the soft and lapping Indian Ocean, the islands of the Maldives have been sculpted and formed into unquestionably one of the most quintessentially beautiful tropical places on the globe.

Ranging from the powdered beaches of the northern atolls to the earthy sea shacks and fishing hamlets of the southern isles, the whole nation can be found strewn across the turquoise waters some way from the Indian subcontinent.

Most visitors will land in the throbbing, pulsing city of Male, packed onto its own pinprick of an isle and boasting spice-scented markets and great mosques.

Most also don’t linger long before they hit the seaplanes or boats and make for the shimmering private bays of their chosen resort, where infinity pools and over-water cabanas are the norm.

More recently, new local guesthouses and the discovery of rolling waves have begun transforming the Maldives from honeymoon hotspot to surfing, adventure and backpacking destination – paradise is now open to all, it seems.

Lets explore the best places to visit in the Maldives :

Islamic Centre

Thrumming with scooters and cars and Indian bazaars stacked with coconuts and spice, the city of Male – the capital of the Maldives atolls – has the frenetic feel of a place crammed into a slot that’s too small for it.

And that’s because it is.

Although rarely visited (most travelers bypass the city on seaplanes heading straight for their resort), the town is crammed onto a pint-sized islet in the North Male Atoll.

It manages to fit some fascinating sights between its streets though, like the 17th-century Friday Mosque and the gold-tipped Islamic Centre.

Male Market is another must – just be sure get your haggling skills up to scratch.

2. Hulhumale Island

Hulhumale Island

Sat just across the sparkling waters from the capital of Male, the island of Hulhumale is forever growing and growing as more and more land is reclaimed to house the sprawling urban tendrils of the city.

It’s also the home of the Velana International Airport, which is the main gateway to these paradisiacal islands for most.

However, don’t be put off by how all that sounds – Hulhumale is actually a charming place.

It’s got a gorgeous – if artificial – beach on its eastern haunch, a clutch of leafy neighborhoods, a glass-topped mosque, and planned promenade walkways above the Indian Ocean.

3. Maafushi

Maafushi

Maafushi might not have the sprawling luxury resorts and opulent 5-star hotels that many of its nearby brothers do, but it’s got plenty of charm.

Sadly ravaged in the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the place has been busy rebuilding its salt-washed fishing jetties and industrious sailor huts in the last decade.

Something that’s helped is the opening up of rights to local guesthouses, which is transforming Maafushi into one of the top off-beat island getaways for budget travelers.

Of course, you can expect gorgeous beaches backed with palms, lapping waves, and a clutch of homey little coffee shops on the shore.

Utheemu

Sat on the far northern reaches of the Haa Alif Atoll, itself the northernmost of all the Maldivian island chains, the beautiful site of Utheemu holds a special place in the history of this archipelago nation.

That’s because it was once the home of the revered Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu – the leader who’s credited with driving out Portuguese invaders from the isles in the late 16th century.

Of course, there are the usual sparkling white sands and lapping Indian Ocean waves, but these are punctuated by heritage sites like the Utheemu Ganduvaru, which is the gorgeous timber-built palace where the respected leader grew up.

Feydhoo

Feydhoo’s story is a curious one.

In the 19th century, the people now living between the leafy streets and tight-knit housing blocks here were the inhabitants of nearby Gan island (more on that one later). When the British came in the run up to WWII, Gan was transformed into an airbase, and the locals were shipped out to live on the next island along in the Seenu Atoll.

That was Feydhoo, which is today a pretty picture of lived-in Maldivian life.

Come and stroll the winding walkways and sample seafood curries with the locals – the welcome is always warm.

6. Maradhoo

Maradhoo

Joined at the hip to aforementioned Feydhoo by a seaside causeway that runs just above the coral-fringed shores of the Seenu Atoll, Maradhoo is a major link in the island chain that starts with Gan to the east.

Long and thin, it juts out into the Indian Ocean like a finger fringed with narrow beachfronts and swaying groves of coconut palms.

As in Feydhoo, the locals are laid-back and lovely, and the cuisine is spicy and rich in seafood.

Be sure to take a walk down Link Road and flit between the coffee shops and sandwich vendors that meet between the palm trees there.

7. Veligandu Island

Veligandu Island

Romantic sunsets glow red and yellow over the lapping waters of the Indian Ocean; cocktails clink in the resort’s luxurious bar; sea kayaks bob on the turquoise shoreline, and crystal-clear waves roll in softly from the inland lagoon.

Welcome to uber-beautiful Veligandu Island, which has long been championed as one of the top destinations in the Maldives for couples.

Honeymooners and newly-weds are a common site on this long, thin finger of land on the western edge of the North Ari Atoll, and there are plenty of opulent seaside villas and suites to match.

8. Banana Reef

Banana Reef

Many travelers heading to the islands of the Maldives will be coming for one thing and one thing only: diving.

And there’s hardly a single better place to don the SCUBA gear and wetsuits in the country than at the Banana Reef.

This fruit-shaped dash of multi-colored corals and seaweed-clad sandbanks lies underwater between the isles of the North Male Atoll.

It’s served by countless outfitters, who lead excursions to uncover the striped snappers and bulbous sponges, the reef sharks and the barracudas that all coalesce here.

9. Thulusdhoo Island

Thulusdhoo Island

It’s the spirit of the salt-washed Caribbean that seems to drive Thulusdhoo Island.

Largely undiscovered, this speck in the Male Atolls is ringed by wide spaces of sand from which bulbous coconut trunks sprout by the hundred.

The beaches are – naturally – great, and the locals love to draw in their fading fishing boats to flint up a good sizzling seafood barbeque now and then.

That all fits perfectly with the other pastime of travelers on Thulusdhoo: surfing.

Look for the fun left-hand rollers that turn into barrels off of Villingilimathi Huraa close by.

10. Fuvahmulah

Fuvahmulah

Fuvahmulah promises something a little different to the rest of the Maldivian atolls.

For starters, this speck on the map of the Indian Ocean doesn’t really have any near neighbors, and it occupies an atoll all of its own.

It’s also peppered with the occasional inland lake, which is a rare sight to see in this flat-lying country.

Meanwhile the sandbanks that ring popular Banging Beach make for some crashing rollers and refreshing salt-spray (a break from the usual relaxing lapping lagoons), and the proximity to the Earth’s equator means steamy weather throughout the year.

11. Alimatha Island

Alimatha Island

Perched on the eastern edge of the Maldives, in the famous Felidhe Atoll, Alimatha is a great tourist island that offers luxury cabanas, untouched stretches of pristine sandy beach, and – most importantly – some of the most celebrated SCUBA diving spots around.

The resort that covers the island can often be seen packed with eager divers, who all come to seek out the pretty coral groves and sea walls that surround the shores.

These are packed with jackfish, morays and eels, and are known for their high visibility and popular night diving packages.

12. Hithadhoo

Hithadhoo

Large (at least for a Maldivian island) and highly-populated (again, at least for a Maldivian island), this sub-section of Addu City in the old Seenu Atoll can be reached on the same causeways that connect Gan to Maradhoo.

On its southern edge, the place is given away to mangroves and marshes and shrub land, while the north side of the island is packed with cafes and bakeries and the occasional set of looming minarets that rise from the local mosques.

More than anything, Hithadhoo oozes a charming lived-in vibe; one that’s difficult to discover elsewhere in the resort-heavy country.

Kuredu

Kuredu is the self-proclaimed jewel of the Lhaviyani Atoll, which makes its home in the central-north reaches of the Maldivian archipelago.

A boomerang-shaped isle, it’s entirely covered by a single resort, which offers rustic bamboo shacks and rows of those ubiquitous over-water bungalows with verandahs above the waves.

The whole place is completely surrounded by its own private fringing of powdery sand, and is considered one of the most advanced SCUBA and snorkeling destinations in the country – strong currents and high waves often make it difficult to see the manta rays and tropical schools.

Unusually, Kuredu also plays host to a full 9-hole golf course.

Gan

Gan is primarily known for its airport, which is the second-largest airport in the entire Maldives and a famous former airbase for the British Royal Air Force during WWII. Today, the island has shed its old military importance in favor of tourism, and it’s slowly rising to become one of the most popular spots in the Addu Atoll.

It’s not just the accessibility (thanks to the airport) that draws the crowds either, because Gan has earthy little fishing restaurants and small stretches of shimmering sand that are usually totally empty of visitors. Nice.

15. Kunfunadhoo Island

Kunfunadhoo Island

If you’re after the fabled luxury and romance of the Maldives, then it’s likely that the opulent resort on Kunfunadhoo Island won’t disappoint – it’s continually hailed as the most indulgent place to stay in the country.

Visitors enter through a thatched timber great hall that hides between groves of coconut palms.

From there, it’s onto the cocktail decks that soar on stilts above the jungle, or out to the beaches where candles flicker in the sultry sea breeze.

Add in a couple of infinity pools, swim-up bars, and the chance to dine on a private little sandbank with only the Indian Ocean waves as a backing track, and it’s easy to see why this one’s so popular!

11 Epic Things to Do in the Maldives

Many vacationers head to the Maldives solely to relax on the beach – and for good reason. The sugar white sand and striking turquoise water – practically unmatched in its clarity anywhere in the Caribbean – make for the perfect beach vacation backdrop. Every resort island has at least one beach with lounge chairs or salas to relax on. Most also have a "house reef" where you can cool off and admire the marine life.

Some resorts that boast notably beautiful beaches include:

With exceptionally clear visibility of up to 131 feet, an average sea temperature of 85.5 degrees Fahrenheit, bucket-list opportunities to swim with whale sharks and manta rays, and an abundance of marine life, the Maldives makes for a great environment for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Many resorts feature a house reef (a coral reef easily accessible from shore), while most also offer snorkeling excursions where a boat and tour operator transport you to even more vibrant reefs around the atoll. Most resorts and many inhabited islands have a dive center, so beginner and seasoned scuba divers alike can enjoy dive trips to the most stunning "giris" (shallow submerged reefs), drop-offs, "thilas" (pinnacles), channels, caves and shipwrecks around the area. With typically a medium to strong current, most dives in the Maldives are drift dives from boats.

Try must-do water sports Try must-do water sports

Your trip to the Maldives would be incomplete if you didn't explore the glassy waters of the Indian Ocean or stick your head beneath the surface to check out the colorful world below. After all, the official territory of the Maldives is 99% water and 1% land, so if you only explore the islands, you're barely scratching the surface.

Snorkeling and diving are the top two activities in the Maldives, with wreck dives, pinnacles, reef walls and channel dives being just some of the options on offer. Swim with dozens of nurse sharks in Fulidhoo, whale sharks at Maamigili and tiger sharks in Fuvahmulah, or check out some of the incredible shipwrecks, such as Kuda Giri. You'll never get bored if you embrace the plethora of water sports available in the Maldives.

Swim with manta rays and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay Swim with manta rays and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay

U.S. News Insider Tip: If seeing mantas and whale sharks at Hanifaru Bay is on your bucket list, choose a resort in Baa Atoll, such as Anantara Kihavah and Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru. You'll avoid a lengthy journey and expensive private charter fees. – Sarah Harvey

Baa Atoll UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve was created in recognition of the incredible biodiversity of the underwater ecosystem, and Hanifaru Bay is the jewel in this atoll's crown. Hanifaru is a monitored snorkeling site that's renowned for attracting exceptionally high numbers of manta rays. During the southwestern monsoon (May to November), huge quantities of zooplankton become trapped in the horseshoe-shaped bay, creating a kind of zooplankton "soup," which in turn attracts remarkable numbers of zooplankton-loving "megafauna." In peak season, there could be as many as 100 mantas, plus maybe even several whale sharks feeding there. Hanifaru is one of the only places in the world where so many mantas and whale sharks aggregate in such unusually high numbers.

Influenced by sailors, traders and other explorers from India, Sri Lanka, the Middle East, Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia and even further afield over a period of more than 2,500 years, the Maldives is a melting pot of cultures. Prior to the country's official conversion to Islam in A.D. 1153, the Maldives was Buddhist and Hindu. You can see evidence of the Maldives' fascinating past through a number of authentic cultural experiences.

North Malé Atoll North Malé Atoll free

This atoll, also known as Kaafu Atoll, is where you'll find the international airport, the capital city, plenty of popular dive sites, several "guesthouse islands" and more than a dozen resorts. A lot of people incorrectly refer to Velana International Airport as "Male airport" (and confusingly, it even has the airport code "MLE"), but it's actually located on an island called Hulhule, which is adjacent to Malé. Most visitors don't ever set foot in Malé, and are instead whisked from Hulhule straight to their resort or guesthouse. However, while most visitors aren't sad to skip Malé, the atoll named after the country's capital city is an extremely popular spot to visit.

Visitors who don't want to hop on another plane after a long journey to the Maldives often pick resorts or guesthouses in North Malé Atoll because they know it's a quick speedboat ride to their accommodation. The closest resorts to the airport, such as Kurumba and Bandos, are only 10 to 15 minutes by speedboat. However, the furthest away islands, which could take from 45 minutes to an hour to reach by speedboat, do have the benefit of not being under flight paths and not having the capital city and other urban developments on the horizon, which guests sometimes complain about. What's more, speedboat transfers are also cheaper than seaplane transfers.

Banana Reef Banana Reef

This vibrant site in North Malé Atoll is popular with divers and snorkelers alike. Its name comes from the curved shape of the reef when seen from above. You can admire a wide variety of marine life, including schools of jacks as well as Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, barracudas, snapper, groupers, reef sharks and, if you're lucky and it's the right season, maybe even mantas too.

Divers who visited the site recently raved about the excellent visibility and abundance of aquatic life, while snorkelers liked how easy it was to see the reef, as the shallowest parts are at only about 4 feet.

U.S. News Insider Tip: If you're looking for an island where you can hang out with other travelers, this one is a great option, although those wanting a more idyllic escape might prefer a less built-up island, such as Fulidhoo or Dhigurah. – Sarah Harvey

Maafushi is the most developed inhabited island in the Maldives when it comes to guesthouse tourism. When guesthouses were first legalized, it was on Maafushi that the first one opened in 2010. Prior to that, it was difficult for visitors to mingle with the average Maldivian and get a sense of what island life was like in the "real" Maldives. Today, Maafushi is home to dozens of guesthouses ranging in size and budget, from simple lodgings to stylish hotels. There are also plenty of cafes, watersports centers and dive centers to keep you entertained.

Hulhumalé Hulhumalé free

Hulhumalé is an entirely artificial island built over a shallow lagoon adjacent to Malé. Construction began in 1997, and the rapidly expanding island is currently well on its way to doubling in size from the original 1.5-square-mile plot. The main purpose of creating Hulhumalé was to provide more housing for the overflowing capital city, and it remains a largely residential island. However, Hulhumalé also attracts travelers thanks to its dozens of guesthouses (which mostly line the long sandy beach), as well as several watersports centers and dive centers, a skate park and its very own Central Park. You will also find a variety of cafes and restaurants, ranging from Maldivian cuisine at The Maldive Kitchen to international options like Korean Food Zone.

The main reason visitors choose to stay in Hulhumalé is because it's close to the airport. If they arrive to the Maldives at night, it means they can't hop on a seaplane (which only operate during day), so Hulhumalé is a handy pit stop for many. While it's quieter and greener than Malé, it is becoming busier every year, and some parts of it are beginning to look in need of repair. However, the beach strip, which most tourists stick to, is fairly well looked after. The second phase of this land reclamation project is newer, and the buildings and streets are in better condition there. It is separated from the rest of the island by a series of bridges over a small channel of water.

Huraa Island Huraa Island free

Huraa is a relaxing, friendly and uncrowded island village best known to tourists for guesthouses, snorkeling and surfing opportunities. There are several surf points in the vicinity, but surfing in the Maldives is best suited to intermediate to advanced-level surfers because all of the breaks are coral breaks. There are souvenir shops, cafes, small grocery shops, two dive centers and a football field, but the white sand beaches fringing the island are probably the biggest draw, along with the unique insights you'll get into how Maldivians really live. Guesthouses on the island can also organize day trips and activities, such as sandbank trips and fishing excursions.

Past travelers love the fact that there are only electric vehicles on the island, but say it's still being developed for tourism. Some were disappointed to find that there is no "bikini beach" anymore (a tourist beach where you can wear a bikini, as it's illegal to wear skimpy swimwear on any island that isn't a resort island). However, many said the island was beautiful and they enjoyed exploring the mangrove area too.

Maldives Victory Maldives Victory

The Maldives Victory, a 262-foot-long cargo ship, sunk in 1981 after hitting a reef in North Malé Atoll . Now, the dive site attracts scuba aficionados thanks to the beautiful corals that have covered it, as well as the rich sea life that has made the wreck a sight to behold, including turtles, trevallies, grouper, batfish, pufferfish and lionfish. For macrolife-lovers, there are also nudibranchs on the stern.

The Maldives Victory rests upright off the coast of Hulhule Island, not too far from the southern end of the Velana International Airport runway. Experts say this site is best seen between late May and July. Recent reviewers recommended a penetration dive so you don't miss the marine life inside the wreck and touted it as one of the most thrilling dive sites in the country.

8 top things to do in the Maldives beyond your villa

Feb 16, 2024 • 6 min read

It’s time to bust the myth that there’s nothing to do in the Maldives apart from sipping rainbow-hued cocktails, snapping beachfront selfies and sprawling on chaise longues.

Don’t get us wrong – we love doing all of these things. But there’s more to this archipelago than just relaxation. The Indian Ocean’s most popular holiday destination offers something for everyone.

Today, in addition to lying out in the sun, the most popular activities in the Maldives include skydiving, art master classes and visits to islands where locals live. Read on to discover the best things to do on your next Maldives getaway.

A scuba diver watches brightly colored fish at Velassaru Resort, Maldives

1. Get a scuba certification

This is an obvious one. The topography of the Maldives’ atolls means the water in which you’ll learn is clear, calm and shallow. The nearest beach is always close by, meaning beginners can head right into the ocean for introductory sessions that would be done in a pool elsewhere. This also means you’ll quickly become accustomed to sharing the sea with a wide range of stunning marine life. And since dive instructors in the Maldives are on longer contracts than freelance instructors elsewhere, you’ll gain an insight into the region’s waters through the people who know it best. The Maldives is also a great place to gain additional qualifications, such as those for technical or shipwreck diving.

What’s more, resorts are going all-out to offer qualified divers a wider range of experiences. On the Noonu Atoll, for example, Siyam World now offers blue-light diving: night dives with blue illumination that reacts with the fluorescent pigments in certain types of marine life, causing them to glow.

A snorkeler gets close to two huge manta rays in the Maldives

2. Admire the Indian Ocean’s marine life

Not up to scuba diving? No problem. The Maldives’ waters are teeming with marine life that are just as accessible through other means. Most resorts offer excursions for guests keen to see brightly colored fish up close. At Anantara Dhigu resort, just a short speedboat ride away from Male , you can sign up for marine-biologist-led excursions to see (and swim with, if you’re feeling brave) nurse sharks. Similarly, at the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort , close to the UNESCO-listed Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve , guests can join resident marine biologists from the Manta Trust on ray-spotting excursions.

Planning tip: Pack your own fins and goggles if you’re planning on snorkeling – you’ll avoid equipment-rental fees and reduce the risk of having to use ill-fitting kit.

3. Immerse yourself in Maldivian history

A growing number of resorts are paying homage to the region’s heritage by giving visitors the chance to learn about the Maldives’ history. At the Raa Atoll’s Cora Cora Maldives , guests can visit the Dutch Onion Museum to admire artifacts found around and near the island – including two ancient, onion-shaped bottles for which the museum is named. Also on display are stone tanks once used to collect rainwater, and which date back to the 12th century.

Similarly, the Heritance Aarah resort on the Raa Atoll has the Maldivian Village, an immersive museum where guests can learn about the region’s earliest inhabitants and life in the Maldives some 4000 years ago.

The dining room at 5.8 Undersea Restaurant at Hurawalhi Island Resort, Maldives

4. Dine, drink or detox underwater

There’s little you can’t do underwater in the Maldives. The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island has an underwater suite for guests who fancy sleeping with the fishes. Several resorts offer swank underwater restaurants, including Hurawalhi Island Resort ’s 5.8 Undersea Restaurant – a spot on most people’s Maldives must-do list.  Niyama Private Islands Maldives is home to Subsix restaurant, where underwater highlights include sea-urchin-like chairs, while  Ozen Life Maadhoo  welcomes diners to take the plunge at its M6m restaurant.

To sip wine that’s been aged underwater (as one does), head to the Emerald Maldives Resort and Spa . For a different kind of indulgence, head to Huvafen Fushi , where you can enjoy one of the resort’s legendary detoxifying treatments in the underwater spa. The large number of options for couples make this a wonderful option for lovebirds searching for memorable (if unusual) romantic activities.

A woman gives the thumbs-up sign during a tandem skydive in the Maldives

5. Go skydiving

Skydiving is new to the Maldives. In 2023, the enterprising owners of Ifuru Island Maldives resort, which has its own small runway, realized their stretch of tarmac made it the perfect place to set up the Maldives’ first permanent skydiving facility. Currently, the skydiving school is led by world-champion skydiver Will Penny, who has over 21,000 jumps under his belt.

You don’t have to be a resort guest to take the leap. And if you opt for the VIP package, you’ll land next to a table on which you’ll find a chilled bottle of champagne and a selection of canapés.

Planning tip: If you plan on skydiving during your Maldives trip, aim to stay close to Ifuru Island – there are plenty of resorts in the same atoll.

A street with flowers on Maafushi Island, Maldives

6. Visit a “local” Maldivian island

Believe it or not, not every one of the Maldives’ islands has been taken over by glitzy resorts. Hundreds of them still have vibrant local communities, and many resorts offer guests the chance to visit these villages and to get a sense of the Maldives life beyond the ’gram.

At the Fairmont Maldives – Sirru Fen Fushi , guests can visit a nearby island and clear litter from its beaches. The Cora Cora Maldives offers guests the opportunity to visit an island abandoned due to rising sea levels – an excursion that provides sobering insights into the heightened risks faced by these low-lying atolls.

Planning tip: Not all resorts formally advertise a trip to a Maldivian island. Ask if yours can organize private visits to local communities; most are happy to help facilitate such excursions for guests.

7. Master a new skill

These days, many resorts go way beyond beachfront service, offering such self-improvement activities as art lessons ( Joali Maldives is one of several resorts with an art studio and in-house art teacher), photography master classes or workshops specializing in traditional Maldivian crafts. At  Gili Lankanfushi , on the easily accessible North Male Atoll, guests can try their hand at kajan thatch-roof making, practice speaking Dhivehi bas (the local dialect) and join a Maldivian drum lesson.

A woman tends to coral fragments, the Maldives

8. Adopt your own piece of coral

The Maldives wouldn’t be the Maldives without its stunning reefs, which encircle the islands on which you’ll find the most popular resorts. While these reefs have not always been well looked after, most resorts today have in-house marine biologists tasked with caring for the corals and nurturing newly-planted coral fragments – a process known as coral propagation.

Check out a vast range of coral-related activities, ranging from opportunities to plant and adopt your own coral fragment ( Vakkaru Maldives is one of many resorts to offer this) to underwater master classes led by marine biologists where you can help log details about the house reef surrounding your resort. The best part? Since resorts know that a pristine reef will attract more guests, coral-related activities are often free of charge – making them one of our favorite free activities in the Maldives, too.

Maldives Cruise: Indian Ocean Dhoni Life Tour

Maldives Cruise: Indian Ocean Dhoni Life

Really enjoyed it! Good boat, good food, great snorkelling and also the CEO helped me so I could do a dive instead of snorkelling one of the days which I really appreciate. Could skip the beach clean up, not that its not needed but after collecting several of bags with trash the bags where just left on the island. Just left us all with a bad feeling, first of all seeing all the trash and then collecting as much as we could, was so much left though, just to leave it on the island in the end 🤷‍♀️. BUT the tour was great!

Very nice hotel with amazing staff in a beautiful place with amazing and unforgettable excursions. We had a blast, wonderful weather in spite of monsoon season in Maldives. It rained only once and for 10 minutes. The excursions made this tour really wonderful and worth coming to Maldives. The Tour operator was in touch with us and asked about the comfort of stay during the tour.

Maldives Uncovered Tour

Maldives Uncovered

We went on this trip in March 2013 and we had a wonderful time, as it was a great way to see such a beautiful place. The overall trip was excellent value and the itinerary enabled us to experience the Maldives in so many ways and also with a small group. We did both of the now optional extras and the crew on the boat were very friendly and helpful and the food was fabulous and in ample supply as well as variety to meet everyone’s taste’s. They also took us to great places for snorkeling which enabled us to see sea turtles, sting rays and even a shark not to mention the many species of beautifully coloured fish. We stayed at the Paradise Island resort and this was a lovely way to end the trip. We would not have thought to do such a trip and were glad that we took advantage of the discounts and booked it at the TNT Travel Show. We will definitely look to book a future trip with encounters travel.

8 day Heavenly Maldives with 3 adventures Tour

8 day Heavenly Maldives with 3 adventures

We've just come back from fantastic holidays in Maldives, Maafushi island and must say that the tour with 3 really exciting full day trips was awesome. All the 8 days we spent really actively taking part in different trips apart from those ones that were included in the itinerary by Paylesstoursindia. We had an unforgettable time there . The accommodation was really nice with delicious food included in the plan. Paylesstoursindia made a great choice in terms of hotel, island and excursions choice. We are amazed and will recommend.

Maldive Dhoni Cruise Tour

Maldive Dhoni Cruise

It was my first time travelling with Explore. All I can say, it was absolutely flawless. Food was amazing, good variety, vegetarian options. Boat crew were always helpful and very pleasant. Our guide (Hi) simply a star. He was taking a good care about us, making sure, we have unforgettable holidays experience. He made many pictures and go pro videos, which he then shared with us. The itinerary was great. We had many opportunities to snorkel. Some coral reefs were simply so beautiful with plenty of fish, we visited shipwreck and even had an opportunity to swim with nurse sharks. Unforgettable experience for sure! :-) What I found outstanding was, how the boat crew prepared our bbq banquet dinner table at the beach, even creating manta ray from the sand in front of the sand table. Equally, I was amazed by the decorations our 'Kethi captain' made for our last dinner table. He created fish, birds from the leaf's, carved small boats to hold the napkins and coconut lamp. It was just so so nice. :-) Would I come again? Definitely yes. Would I recommend to other travelers? Definitely yes. Only one thing I would point out. I would suggest clients with mobility issues discuss this tour first with the tour provider. They may have problems moving around the boat, getting on/off dinghy and may not be able to participate in snorkeling, which is a shame. ;-)

This experience takes the hassle out of planning a trip to the Maldives. You are picked up from the airport and boat transfered to the Island with hotel. Hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. We had great sea view rooms. The included half day with lunch tour is great experience. The included buffet breakfast and dinner also great. Through the hotel you can book more adventures to do with your extra days or you can relax in the hotel pools or private beaches. The choice is yours.

Quite an amazing adventure on Maldives made possible with care of the ecosystems and support to the Maldivian people. My guide, Archie/Muhamed was the best guide anyone could ever have in seeing and enjoying the beauty of Maldives. His connections with Maldivian people made my trip comfortable, convenient and an adventure to treasure. Would love to do it again with my family! Thank you so much Archie and Ruth!!

Having a heart-shaped structure, as seen from the skies, Addu City is not only one of the must-visit Maldives tourist attractions, but also one of the best places to visit in Maldives for honeymoon . Boasting of the ancient history of Maldives, the city is stretched across a group of six islands that are connected by causeways. Decked with coconut trees, sandy beaches, and the surrounding pearl blue waters, Addu city owns picturesque landscapes, enough to lure visitors. Maamigili Island

The Island can be reached from Male via 45-minute seaplane ride. About 750 meters long and 500 meters wide, the island is famous for pristine coral reefs, white sand beaches, and Loama Resort. The luxury resort also houses a museum with contemporary local artworks.

Tourist Spots Reflecting History, Art and Culture of the Island

Learning about a new country’s history, art, and culture is a nice difference from researching all the tourist destinations, lodging options, and transportation. The Maldives has seen many disasters over its history, and one of its islands, Male, has a few gems erected to educate visitors. “Look it over.”

1. National Museum

National Museum

In Male, the National Museum is home to a sizable collection of historical artefacts that chronicle the history of the Maldivian Islands. This three-story museum is a part of the Maldivian Royal Palace complex from the 17th century, which also includes a Sultan Park (Public Park). You may find a variety of well-preserved galleries and objects inside the museum, such as weapons, domestic items, religious relics, wood with Arabic and Thaana carvings, and more. However, the nearby beach is also well-known among visitors, particularly among surfers, as it is thought to be the best surfing location.

Best Islands for Wildlife and Adventure Lovers

In the Maldives, “wildlife and adventure” go hand in hand because you may engage in certain water sports and see oceanic species as well. Adventure sports and leisure activities can help you find the several atolls where you can find hundreds of different species.

1. Maldivian Wildlife

Maldivian Wildlife

The Maldives are home to a diverse variety of wildlife, including marine life that seeks sanctuary in the island nation’s vibrant coral reefs and numerous atolls. Dolphins, blue-stripe snapper, oriental sweet lips, Moorish idols, angelfish, unicorn fish, as well as some larger fishes like sharks, manta rays, and stingrays, are some of the stunning ocean species that may be found there. But many bird species also call these islands home. In the Maldives, eagles, cranes, herons, and, while we’re on the subject, fruit bats, are all common birds.

2. Dive Club on Male Island

Dive Club on Male Island

Yes, the Maldives’ numerous island resorts offer thrilling activities, but what are the chances for visitors who come to stay in the city’s center? To be fair, the island of Male does include a club for adventurous or recreational activities that visitors of all kinds can take use of. During your Maldives vacation, check out the Dive Club on Male Island. It provides activities including scuba diving, fishing, island hopping, and underwater scooter trips. Are you hesitant to attempt something new? Well, don’t panic; there are also qualified guides accessible.

Best Places for Connoisseurs

We frequently put “what to eat” on the final page of our vacation to-do list, although it is thought that food is what first connects us to a new place. Therefore, while visiting the Maldives, you must go local and sample some Maldivian food in addition to dining in some foreign establishments.

1. Seagull Cafe House, Male

Seagull-Cafe

One of the nicest locations to eat and unwind in Male is Seagull Cafe House thanks to its amazing decor, attractive garden, and trees surrounding the terrace. Its menu features a broad variety of delectable items, including sandwiches, curries, burgers, wraps, pasta, and, of course, fish. While here, you must stop by this lovely café, which is situated right in the middle of the city. Until 11 p.m., Seagull Cafe House is open daily.

2. Thai Wok Restaurant, Male

Thai Wok Restaurant, Male

If you enjoy Thai food, you must go to Thai Wok to sample its genuine fare. It is situated in Hithaffivinivaa Magu and offers wonderful food in a picturesque setting. You can be tempted to return for more eating by the food’s aroma. The weekly buffet is the best part of a family vacation, so you must go there. Every traveler is enthralled by the Maldives’ absolute fame and opulent aura.

Its clear blue waters, white sandy beaches, soothing villas and scrumptious food are the things that vacationers are drawn towards. The second thing that invites people are adventure, water sports, wild species and underwater life. These islands of Maldives certainly are a treasure trove that must be explored before the island disappears. Well, not to sound very cliched, if the images did not really help you to virtually be there, Tour My India can certainly help you get there.

Your Trip to the Maldives: The Complete Guide

maldives tour spot

Made up of nearly 1,200 coral islands strung north to south in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is one of the most popular beach destinations on the planet. Known for world-class diving, miles of empty white-sand beaches, and resorts oozing with luxury, the Maldives isn’t always the most budget-friendly destination (though bargains can be found). But if you’re looking for mind-blowing sunsets, sugary sand, and the most turquoise water you’ve ever seen, break out your credit card and book a flight. Read on for our complete Maldives visitor’s guide, and learn the best places to stay, eat, dive, and explore in this spectacular tropical locale.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time To Visit: In true tropical island style, temperatures in the Maldives average 83 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) year-round, and there are only two main seasons; dry and wet. The dry season comes in fall and winter, from November through April, with temperatures ranging from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 89 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). The low, monsoon season runs from May through October, with the wettest month usually falling in June. Temperatures in the rainy season range from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 87 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).

Getting Around: As an island nation spread across hundreds of miles of the ocean, it’s only natural that boats are the country’s transport mainstay, so prepare your sea legs (or Dramamine). For those staying near the capital or attempting a more budget holiday, ferries are offered between some of the more populated islands in the Malé Atoll capital area. Speedboat taxis can be hired for short-distance island hopping, and private resort speedboats whisk guests away to properties in the immediate vicinity. For resorts set in distant atolls, further transport will be via seaplane or a domestic flight to one of the more far-flung airports followed by speedboat transfer to the resort.

Travel Tip: Many visitors to the Maldives must travel by seaplane to reach their final destination, so it’s important to note that seaplanes only operate during daylight hours. If your flight arrives after dark, consider staying at a nearby hotel on either Hulhulé Island or in nearby Malé city.

Things to Do

This is a country surrounded by water, water, and more water, so it's only natural that water sports have emerged as the leading activity in the Maldives. Landlubbers can bask in the sun on deserted sandbanks, or perhaps spend the day in one of the dozens of spas dotted at upmarket resorts throughout the nation.

  • Diving: Some of the world's best diving can be found in the Maldives' coral atolls. Spot whale sharks and manta rays from May through November in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, or dive deep with octopi and reef sharks to explore some of the area's famed shipwrecks.
  • Water sports: Snorkeling, stand-up paddle, surfing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and every other water sport imaginable are available year-round. Most resorts include access to non-motorized water sports equipment, and the larger populated islands generally have water sports rental facilities.
  • Spa experiences: The Maldives is home to some of the most indulgent hotel spas in the world. These havens of tranquility offer everything from Thai massages set in overwater villas, to underwater treatment rooms, to complete detox, rejuvenation, or restoration packages. Most resorts have a spa on the property, so it's only a matter of choosing which will best suit your budget and relaxation desires.
  • Nothing: Perhaps the ultimate activity of all in the Maldives is doing absolutely nothing. This definition of "nothing" means laying on a sun lounger on one of the country's best beaches , staring into the sea-green distance while sipping ice-cold coconut water and reading a novel.

What to Eat and Drink

Maldivian cuisine borrows mainly from India and Sri Lanka, which both highlight hot, spicy flavors. But in the Maldives, what you’ll eat largely depends on where you stay. High-end resorts offer a variety of a la carte local and international fare in a host of luxurious settings, including in overwater and underwater restaurants .

Budget resorts are more likely to provide buffet meals with both Western and Asian options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are also small local eateries and cafes on many of the inhabited islands, purveying specialties such as fish cakes, soups, and curries.

Alcohol is prohibited in the Maldives (except for tourists at licensed hotels and resorts), so don’t expect to wash down your curry with a beer in any of the local establishments. Many of the more upmarket resorts, however, have full bars, and even wine cellars with hundreds of vintages to choose from.

Where to Stay

If visitors stay in the city of Malé, it’s rarely for more than one night, as there’s not much going on in the capital other than commerce, a few restaurants, and a museum or two. Most visitors stay in one of the dozens of resorts, which are often set on private islands in one of the country’s myriad coral atolls.

Accommodations vary widely in the Maldives, from rustic local guesthouses to some of the world’s most expensive resorts. If you’re on a budget, there are a handful of guesthouses and small hotels in many of the inhabited islands, such as in the North Malé Atoll or Ari Atoll.

There are also a variety of all-inclusive resorts, which range widely in quality. Check out Adaaran Prestige Vadoo , which is only 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport and has overwater villas with private pools, or the chic design and five restaurants at LUX* South Ari Atoll .

The Maldives’ lineup of five-star resorts are the stuff holiday dreams are made of. Postcard-perfect beaches, overwater villas, serene spas, and private butlers are only a taste of what to expect should you choose to splurge. Some of the most popular (and expensive) options include chains such as the Four Seasons , St. Regis , and the Six Senses , plus properties like Soneva Jani , which features massive overwater villas with private pools and waterslides, or Huvafen Fushi Maldives which has the world’s first and only underwater spa.

Getting There

The gateway to the Maldives is Velana International Airport (MLE), formerly Malé International Airport, which is set on an island adjacent to the capital city of Malé. Upon arrival, the best transport mode depends on where you’re staying. A bridge connects the airport (on Hulhulé Island) to adjacent Malé city, or there are taxis, speedboat taxis, and regularly scheduled (though not always on time) ferries.

The Maldives’ seafaring past and Indian Ocean location means the remote country has been heavily influenced by its closest neighbors, India and Sri Lanka, as well as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Africa. Many visitors will only see the surroundings of their chosen resort, but the Maldives possesses cultural treasures on the local islands and in Malé that are also worth exploring.

  • One of the oldest mosques in the Maldives is the Malé Hukuru Miskiy, or Old Friday Mosque, which was built from ornately carved coral in 1658. The mosque is set on Hulhulé Island, an easy taxi ride from the airport.
  • The Maldives National Museum in Malé is a compact yet illuminating repository for the country’s prized artifacts. Displays range from ancient to modern times and contain everything from religious carvings to whale skeletons to lacquered wood boxes handmade by Maldivian craftspeople.
  • Across Sultan Park from The Maldives National Museum is The National Art Gallery. Established in 1999, this relatively new museum houses collections of Maldivian art from both past and present.

Money-Saving Tips

  • May through October is monsoon season in much of Southeast Asia, and the Maldives is no exception. Although summer can sometimes bring heavy rainfall and severe storms, most often there are only afternoon showers, and risking a visit during these monsoon months (particularly June, considered the wettest month) means deep discounts compared to visiting the country during the peak season.
  • Since alcohol is heavily taxed and marked-up in the Maldives, a drinks bill at the end of your trip can pose a hefty surprise. To keep the holiday stress-free and the umbrella drinks coming, consider choosing an all-inclusive package if you plan to indulge in adult libations during your stay.

History of Maldives

Best Places of Maldives

Speaking of the history of Maldives, it has been shown via the discovery of relics on these islands that Buddhist adherents first inhabited there in the fifth century BC. The Maldives was formerly a centre for resupply for food, water, coir, and other supplies since they are situated on the main maritime route while crossing the Indian Ocean. Buddhism appears to have been the major religion practised by the Maldivians, as evidenced by ancient Buddhist ruins. However, Abul Barakat Yousuf Al Barbary from Morocco (formerly known as Maghrib) converted the Maldives’ inhabitants to Islam in 1153 AD, and ever since then, Muslims have spread over the Island. North African traveller Ibn Battuta resided in this area. After the 16th century, several colonial powers, notably the Portuguese, Dutch, and French, conquered the Maldives. This intervention ended with the establishment of the British Protectorate over the Maldives. The first republic was established in 1953, but the Maldives didn’t fully achieve political independence from the British until 1965. The Second Republic of the Maldives’s inaugural president was Ibrahim Nasser. From that point forward, several nations considered the possibility of national economic growth and subsequently seized it.

The museum offers an exhibit devoted to Maldivian history as well as a collection of several ancient artefacts that have been preserved and are of historical significance. This museum places a strong focus on observing Maldivians’ sense of patriotism. Numerous royal artefacts and pieces of art from the Islamic and Buddhist eras may be found in the museum. This museum previously formed a crucial component of the Maldivian Royal Palace; as a result, it now houses a large collection that includes manuscripts, royal family attire, ancient stone artefacts, weaponry, and many other items. If you’re planning a vacation to the Maldives, you must see this historical site since it represents a significant period in the country’s rich history. Kudahuvadhoo Island, Maldives

The capital of Dhaalu Atoll is Kudahuvadhoo Island. It is a popular Maldives tourist spot known for its significant architectural features and the enigmatic “Havitas” mound. These mounds are thought to represent the ruins of ancient Buddhist temples and predate the Islamic period. There are also well-preserved ruins of an old mosque with evidence of sculptures in coral-stone and magnificent antique brickwork. Kudhwadhoo Island, like the rest of the Maldives, has crystal-clear water, making it the ideal location for swimming, scuba diving, and other water activities.

Maldive Victory

Maldive Victory

Maldives Victory is a well-known diving location with lovely accommodations. Here, a cargo ship known as the Maldives Victory sank in the year 198, and its debris is still visible today. Maldives Victory was a huge cargo ship with a capacity of 3500 tonnes that was built a decade before its sad tragedy. It graces the water with all of its splendour, measuring 110 metres in length and 13 metres in breadth. After this disaster, a few years later, several dive operators found the ship, and from that point forward, the area gained popularity as a tourist diving destination. And right now, a lot of foreign visitors come here to do scuba diving and see this enormous ship. Come visit Maldives Victory if you’re planning a vacation to some of the top tourist destinations in the Maldives.

There’s a reason this travel spot is known as the Maldives of Mexico

An affordable alternative to the maldives.

Amanda Teague

Picture pristine turquoise waters stretching as far as the eye can see, surrounded by lush greenery and white sandy beaches. This luxurious scene isn’t just a dream reserved for far-off destinations like the Maldives. Situated in the southeastern corner of Mexico lies a hidden gem that rivals the beauty of its distant Asian counterpart: Bacalar.

Where is Bacalar, Mexico?

What makes bacalar so special, bacalar vs. maldives: why bacalar is the better choice, book your trip today.

Bacalar, often referred to as the “Maldives of Mexico,” is a gorgeous destination renowned for the Bacalar Lagoon, otherwise known as the “Lagoon of Seven Colors.” Bacalar, Mexico’s crystal clear waters, resemble the famous hues of the Indian Ocean surrounding the Maldives. But what sets Bacalar apart isn’t just its striking resemblance to the Maldives—it’s the accessibility, affordability, and unique experiences it offers travelers without the lengthy journey. So pack your bags and head to Mexico .

Bacalar is located in the southeastern region of Mexico, specifically in the state of Quintana Roo. It is just 25 miles north of the popular tourist destination of Chetumal. Additionally, the municipality is only a few miles away from the Belize border.

Surrounded by dense jungle vegetation and nestled within the Yucatan Peninsula, Bacalar, Mexico, offers a serene and secluded setting that feels worlds away from the busy resorts of Cancun and Playa del Carmen . However, its proximity to major transportation hubs makes it easily accessible for travelers looking to take a fun day trip out of Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

Recognized by the Mexican government as a Pueblo Magico (Magical Town), Bacalar, Mexico, is a sight to be seen. While Bacalar may feel like a beach town, there is no actual beach in the area. Instead, the gorgeous colors in the water are a part of the giant freshwater lagoon known as the “Lagoon of Seven Colors.” The lagoon’s crystal-clear waters, varying depths, and limestone formations create an enchanting atmosphere for visitors. Travelers are encouraged to swim, kayak, and sail along the waters in the lagoon.

In addition to the lagoon, there are several other natural wonders to explore. Bacalar is nestled within an incredibly diverse ecological region, surrounded by jungle vegetation and dotted with cenotes, which are natural sinkholes filled with freshwater. Bacalar is also quite peaceful and serene, unlike the bustling tourist hotspots nearby, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a quiet vacation.

While the Maldives undoubtedly boasts its own allure, Bacalar offers several advantages that make it a compelling alternative for travelers seeking a tropical paradise closer to home.

  • Accessibility: Bacalar, Mexico, is much more accessible for many travelers compared to the Maldives. Bacalar can be reached via direct flights to Cancun, followed by a scenic drive into the municipality. Heading to the Maldives typically requires long-haul flights and multiple layovers.
  • Affordability: Traveling to Bacalar tends to be more budget-friendly compared to the Maldives. The Maldives is known for its luxurious resorts and high-end accommodations, while Bacalar offers a wide range of lodging options to suit different budgets. You’ll also find dining and shopping to be more affordable in Bacalar.
  • Diverse activities: While both destinations offer crystal clear waters, Bacalar has a greater diversity of activities for vacationers to take part in. In addition to the Bacalar Lagoon, visitors can enjoy nearby cenotes, hike through the jungle, and enjoy shopping in the center of the community.

With its accessibility, affordability, and rich cultural heritage, Bacalar offers travelers a captivating alternative to far-away destinations like the Maldives. While Bacalar is a great destination all year around, the municipality is at its best weather-wise from December through March during the community’s dry season.

In the wake of several notable safety incidents involving Boeing planes, specifically the 737 MAX 9, passengers worldwide have found themselves apprehensive about their chosen mode of air travel. From the tragic crashes of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, both involving the Boeing 737 MAX, to concerns surrounding the Boeing 737 MAX 9 as the plug covering an unused exit door blew out mid-flight earlier this year, the aviation giant’s track record has faced unprecedented scrutiny.

Amid these safety concerns, many travelers are looking to avoid flying on the Boeing 737 MAX planes, however, it can be hard to find the type of aircraft during the booking process. Luckily, a new website has emerged, aiming to quickly let passengers know whether or not they are traveling on a Boeing aircraft. You can use this website before you book your ticket

Located along the sun-kissed shores of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, Tulum is one of the most popular vacation spots for travelers looking to enjoy crystal clear waters and ancient ruins. With its beautiful beaches, laid-back vibe, and rich cultural heritage, this once-hidden gem is now a bucket list destination for many. With popular attractions like Tulum National Park and the Mayan Ruins, travelers can enjoy a relaxing beach vacation while also stepping back into history.

As the allure of Tulum spreads far and wide, the challenge of overtourism becomes greater. What was once a tranquil retreat has turned into a bustling hotspot, causing overcrowded beaches and litter-strewn streets. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, local authorities have taken decisive action to safeguard Tulum’s natural beauty and cultural integrity. In an effort to mitigate the impacts of overtourism, a new set of rules has been implemented, urging travelers to find a balance between exploration and preservation.  The new rules for travelers heading to Tulum

Southern states are phenomenal for escaping cold winter days for those of us who live up north. I recently had the privilege of heading down to Sedona, Arizona, for a mountain biking media camp. I’d heard that Sedona mountain biking is incredible, but it is something you must experience for yourself.

Forgive me if this sounds a bit cliche, but Sedona is truly like stepping into a postcard. The city sits in a valley surrounded by towering red rock cliffs, with multiple trail systems reaching out from the city into these hills and cliffs. And they are not for the faint of heart.

Maldives Tries to Win Back Indian Tourists As Arrivals Fall 40%

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

April 16th, 2024 at 9:11 AM EDT

While Maldives enjoys record-breaking arrivals, its tourism companies aren't about to let the Indian market keep falling. They're on a mission to reverse the trend.

Peden Doma Bhutia

The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators is determined to increase Indian arrivals to the island destination and is taking steps to achieve this.

“Indian arrivals to the Maldives have gone down by almost 40%,” said Abdulla Ghiyas, the association’s president, in an exclusive interview with Skift.

In early January, #BoycottMaldives started trending in Indian social media following a diplomatic dispute between the two countries. Indians accused Maldivian politicians of making disparaging remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As a result, India, which was the number 2 source market for Maldives, has now fallen to number 6 . India’s share of visitors had been almost 11% – it has shrunk to 5.6%.

Promotions in Indian Cities

Ghiyas said the association will be hosting roadshows in 3 Indian cities in July and confirmed to Skift that one of the cities would be Bengaluru.

The association also plans to engage with Indian social media influencers. “We also want to see how we can work with the tourism board in Maldives as we have partnered with them in the past as well. There are talks that the tourism board is also planning of doing something in India,” Ghiyas said.

At the July roadshows, he said he’s keen to look at cities that have direct connectivity with Maldives.

Ghiyas expressed a desire to have conducted the roadshow earlier, noting that May is when Indian outbound travel peaks. However, he mentioned plans for another round of roadshows towards the end of the year, aiming to include Tier 2 cities. “Even if they lack direct flights to the Maldives, these cities would represent an important market for us,” he said.

maldives tour spot

Maldives has so far received (from January 1-April 15) 693,867 tourists, up from 606,395 arrivals for the same period last year, as per the latest data from the Maldives tourism ministry.

China is the top source market for the island destination, followed by UK and Russia.

Between January 1-April 15, almost 39,000 Indians visited Maldives, a decline of almost 40%, compared to the 64,250 arrivals for the same period last year.

“We might not talk immediately about the growth scenario, but I would definitely like to see the 40% decline narrow down,” Ghiyas said.

Can’t Ignore India

While Maldives has experienced record-breaking tourism arrivals so far, Ghiyas said it still needs India. “There are properties and resorts that rely heavily on the Indian market, which have been severely affected. This will hurt us in the long term and that is why we have decided to engage with the India market.”

Aminath Suzan, CEO of Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators, pointed to cultural ties, such as similarities in food, language, and pop culture. “We must ensure that unrelated matters do not negatively impact the bond, for which we have dedicated years and built this alliance.”

The association members also recently met with Munu Mahawar, the Indian high commissioner in Maldives, to collaborate closely with his office to boost tourism initiatives.

Dubbing the meeting with Mahawar “positive,” Ghiyas said the high commission has offered assistance to the association. “Once we have a concrete plan, we will definitely follow up with the High Commission and share our plans.”

‘Tawdry money trap’ named world’s most relaxing holiday destination

Magic hour in Little Venice on Mykonos, Greece

Ah, summer holidays. For a small slice of the year, it’s time to hit the beach, and do nothing but sip cocktails and cool off in the sea.

So, where should you go for ultimate R&R?

According to a new ranking, the Greek island of Mykonos is the number one relaxing holiday destination.

Chosen for its ‘small population and the number of wellness opportunities available from hiking trails to vegan and vegetarian restaurants’, the data also found that Mykonos is home to 21 spas and five wellness retreats.

It almost sounds too good to be true – and, it just might be.

With five-star resorts, a harbour full of yachts and glitzy clientele ( Kate Moss , Gigi Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski have all spent time there) an incredible two million tourists flock to Mykonos every single year.

A view of Mykonos port and town, island of Mykonos, Cyclades, Greece

But the Greek island is also a victim of its own popularity, with visitors complaining of overpricing, overtourism and inauthentic experiences.

Travel critic for the Telegraph, Heidi Fuller Love , described it as a ‘tawdry money trap’, while the amount of construction to build new developments across the island has been dubbed ‘wretched’ by the Greek courts.

The island’s notorious DK Oyster restaurant also regularly makes headlines, for all the wrong reasons, thanks to it’s eye-watering charges. In August 2022, a  Canadian couple on their honeymoon said they were charged 400 euros (£335)  for a beer, an Aperol spritz and a dozen oysters.

And tourists aren’t exactly leaving rave reviews about the place either.

The 'small but lovely' Greek island alternative to Mykonos

If you prefer a quieter (and cheaper) break, there’s another location in  Greece  blessed with similarly stunning views and scorching hot  weather .

Nestled in the Aegean Sea is the Greek island of Paros. With its gorgeous beaches and crystal clear waters overlooked by breathtaking landscapes, Paros is often overlooked.

But it has everything you’d want from a sun-soaked getaway. There are a number of charming villages surrounded by nature here, such as Parikia, which is a port town and the island’s capital.

There’s lots to see for culture vultures too: the church of Panagia Ekatontapiliani, the 13th century Venetian Castle, the Archaeological Museum and a number of ancient sites, including the remains of the Old Temple of Athena.

And of course, there are a number of beaches on the island too. The top-rated on Tripadvisor is Kolymbithres Beach, described as a petite spot that has unique rock formations.

Paros actually featured in Netflix’s One Day – so book your trip now, before the TV fans discover it!

‘Skip Mykonos, can’t wait to leave’, wrote reviewer Dave , on Reddit, after his trip inSeptember.

‘Felt like everyone’s influencer or blogger brought them here,’ he wrote. ‘We were turned off by the price gouging, everything felt like a tourist trap.’

And another added: ‘The only thing keeping Mykonos alive is its reputation.’

Colourful streets on Mykonos, Greece

While over on TripAdvisor, visitors complained of overcrowding. ‘Very busy with quite a few boats in the port, thousands of tourists jostling for position everywhere.

‘Completely swamped the Greek atmosphere that we had anticipated.’

Of course, that’s not to say that some people don’t have an incredible time on the island.

‘Mykonos is pricy,’ wrote one Redditor, ‘but you are paying for the vibes of the island.

‘Whether or not those vibes of the island are worth the money is a personal decision. Mykonos is neither good nor bad; it is what it is.’

Maldives to hold roadshows in India to woo tourists back amid strained ties

A maldivian tourist body is planning to conduct roadshows in indian cities to regain indian tourists lost amid the strained diplomatic relations..

Listen to Story

Representatives of the Maldives tourism body are holding a discussion with India's High Commissioner in Male, Munu Mahawar

  • A Maldivian tourism body is planning roadshows in India
  • The Maldives wants to woo back Indian tourists
  • Country saw significant drop in Indian tourists amid diplomatic row

As the number of Indian tourists arriving in the Maldives continues to decline amid the strained diplomatic relations between the two countries, a major tourism body in the island nation has announced that they will hold roadshows across Indian cities to woo back Indian tourists.

The Maldives faced severe backlash and a boycott campaign after multiple Maldivian officials, including Ministers, used derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Mod i in January after he compared Lakshadweep to the Maldives upon his visit to the Union Territory.

The plans to enhance travel and tourism cooperation, including conducting the roadshows, were announced by the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) following a discussion with the Indian High Commissioner in Male on April 8.

“MATATO expressed its intention to collaborate closely with the Indian High Commission in Maldives to bolster tourism initiatives. Plans are underway to launch a comprehensive roadshow across key cities in India and to facilitate influencer and media familiarisation trips to the Maldives in the forthcoming months,” the tourism body said in a statement.

The association noted that India remains a vital market for Maldivian tourism, adding that they look forward to partnering with prominent travel associations and industry stakeholders across India to further promote the Maldives as a premier travel destination.

According to official data released by the Maldives Ministry of Tourism, the country witnessed a notable drop in the number of Indian travellers visiting the island nation following the diplomatic row. In 2023, out of over 17 lakh tourists who visited the Maldives, the majority were Indians (2,09,198), followed by Russians and Chinese. However, in the weeks following the diplomatic tensions, the number of Indians has slipped to fifth position.
