Clifton Sea View

Charna Island

Charna Island is a small island around 6 to 7 kilometers away from Karachi in the Arabian Sea. Charna is a giant piece of rock in the middle of the sea covering the area of around 1.5 km sq. The main attractions of this island are Scuba diving, Cliff diving, Jet skiing, snorkeling, underwater photography, and exploration of sea species.

Pakistan Maritime and PAF Museum

The Maritime Museum is a naval museum with an area of 28 acres. It has a large auditorium and galleries. The museum, which was based and built on the modern concept of education, has several ancient art galleries. The museum also displays a Minesweeper ship, Breguet Atlantic aircraft and a wooden barge that was given by Her Majesty, Queen of England to Naval Chief of Pakistan in the ’60s.

It also displays a full class Submarine PNS Hangor (S131). The timings of the museum are 8:00 am to 22:00 pm and the ticket cost 2-3$ (Rs. 200-350) depending on adult or children.

The other museum worth visiting is the PAF museum (Pakistan Air Force Museum) it’s definitely a must-visit if you have little kids. It’s nice and vast, well maintained, it has all the facilities. It is very green and one has to take a long walk with the kids before entering the museum. There are so many aircraft models on display, and there is so much information one can collect on Pakistan’s aviation. You can also plan a small picnic from home if you are not fond of buying food from outside. Evenings are best for a visit there since it’s always breezy.

The house was neglected until 1985 when authorities restored it and converted it into a museum celebrating the life of Jinnah. You can see his reading room, dining rooms, bedrooms and dressing room, many of which are still full of their original furnishings and possessions.

Chaukhani tombs

Around 30km east of Karachi is the Chaukhani tombs, beautifully carved and intricate tombs which spread over around 2 square miles of land. The tombs are built on raised platforms in a pyramids form with decorative stone slabs covered in relief with human and figurative designs.

Most of the tombs represent family graveyards and only a few are placed under pillar canopies finished in the Hindu style. The carvings on some of the male graves show a horseman with his arms; shield, sword, bow and arrow. The carvings on women’s graves represent ornaments such as bracelets, necklaces, rings, anklets, etc. Also in case of male graves, a boss shaped projection provided at the northern end intends to hold the turban of the deceased.

Clifton Beach is awesome, but sometimes, we don’t want to be surrounded by loud crowds of tourists and vendors. We want to enjoy a relaxing day by the sea where we can just lie in the sand, have a nice picnic, and have fun in the sea without any worries. In that case, it’s worth taking the longer route to Sandspit Beach, a beautiful and quiet beach in Karachi. Together with similarly calm beaches, like Hawke’s Bay Beach and Turtle Beach, Sandspit Beach is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi if you simply want to get away from the noise of the city. Popular activities at Sandspit Beach involve horse rides, camel rides, and speed boat rides.

While the selection of stores is rather basic and can be found at any other mall in Pakistan, it’s the ambiance that makes Dolmen Mall one of the most beautiful places to visit in Karachi. From its location by the sea to the beautiful flower-themed decorations covering the mall’s walls and ceilings, there are many small elements that make Dolmen Mall the perfect place to hang out alone or with friends.

If you’re in the mood for big shopping, I recommend a visit to Lucky One Mall instead. Located at the other end of town, Lucky One is the biggest mall in South Asia where you can likely find everything you’re looking for.

Although the views are great at all times, the best time to dine at Do Darya is in the evening around sunset. Do keep in mind however that it isn’t recommended for women to visit Do Darya without a male companion in the dark.

Coworth Park

Located just 45 minutes from London, Coworth Park sits on a 240-acre estate on the edge of Windsor Great Park in Sunningdale, Ascot.

This sprawling 5-star hotel is a favorite among the rich and famous — but most notably, it’s loved by Prince Harry and his estranged brother, Prince William.

In fact, the Duke of Sussex stayed here the night before his royal wedding to Meghan Markle in May 2018.

He and Prince William, who served as his Best Man at the lavish nuptials, enjoyed a night of luxurious pampering at the estate, which is nestled around the corner from the Guards Polo Club.

The brothers dined at the hotel’s well-known restaurant called Woven by Adam Smith, which received a Michelin star in October 2017.

The elegant restaurant is a tribute to exceptional British produce and serves up a variety of elegantly crafted dishes, including meats, seafood and shellfish. It also offers up some vegetarian options.

The Dorchester

With its long-standing reputation as one of the most luxurious hotels in London, The Dorchester has been a staple destination within the royal family for decades.

The plush hotel, located in the heart of posh Mayfair, has been the backdrop for several notable moments in years past — and has been a special (and loved) location for the late Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, the late Prince Phillip.

In fact, Her Late Majesty — who died in Sept. 2022 at age 96 — stayed at The Dorchester when she was a princess the night before announcing her engagement to Philip Mountbatten on July 10, 1947.

The hotel, which sits next to the iconic Hyde Park, proved to be the couple’s favorite London hotspot over the years.

It’s also where Phillip held his bachelor party prior to his Nov. 20, 1947 wedding to Elizabeth II. Phillip’s sophisticated bash has been documented in a plaque at the hotel, which he himself unveiled after a refurbishment in 1990.

The Dorchester opened its doors in 1931 and has since been “favored by royalty and celebrities, hosting countless state banquets and legendary parties.”

Many members of the royal family have passed through its doors on many occasions over the years, and the late Queen famously attended her first charity ball dance there.

In true British fashion, the hotel boasts a laundry list of notable moments in history for which it had served as a backdrop.

In 1944, during World War II, Dwight D. Eisenhower stayed at The Dorchester while planning the Normandy Invasion.

Needless to say, his suite — located on the first floor of the hotel — hosted many high-profile guests, including none other than former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill.

The luxe hotel also has notable ties to the James Bond franchise.

Roger Moore’s appointment as the “shaken, not stirred” martini-sipping secret agent was first made official on Aug. 1, 1972, during a press conference held at the hotel.

And the Vesper Bar — located at the hotel — is also home to Bond’s very first martini, which starred in Ian Fleming’s first novel “Casino Royale.”

Cliveden House

Dating back to the 17th century, Cliveden House is one of Meghan Markle’s favorite places to stay in the UK.

The Duchess of Sussex, 42, stayed at the sprawling Berkshire mansion the night before her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry.

And Markle isn’t the only royal who has favored this 5-star hotel, as it’s been a long-standing favorite among members of the Firm for centuries.

The second Duke of Buckingham built Cliveden House as a hunting lodge in 1666 for his mistress, Anna Maria the Countess of Shrewsbury.

There, he fought a duel on her behalf with her husband, the Earl of Shrewsbury, in 1668, which resulted in the Earl’s death.

On one of their earliest royal duties in 1938, Elizabeth and Margaret made the 5-mile journey from London to meet the Kennedys, who were staying there with Cliveden’s owners, the Astors.

Lord Astor gave the estate to the National Trust in 1942, although Astor descendants continued to live there until 1969.

As Kate Middleton’s favorite spot, The Goring Hotel has been a staple within the royal family for years.

The Princess of Wales, 42, spent her last night as a commoner in the hotel’s 1,482-square-foot Royal Suite along with her sister Pippa, and their mother, Carole.

The trio checked into the luxe hotel the night before Catherine’s nuptials with Prince William in April 2011, which took place at Westminster Abbey.

The suite was unveiled to the public earlier that year.

Princess Catherine returned to the hotel in 2015 for its grand opening post-refurbishment. To mark the special occasion, she even put the final touch on the hand-painted wallpaper in its front hall.

Guests visiting the luxury hotel are able to book the exact suite the royal stayed in, which is located on the penthouse level and boasts a “unique collection of royal artifacts, from handwritten letters and stationery to military regalia.”

What’s more, there’s even a life-size portrait of Queen Victoria on the wall to complete the “live like a royal” experience.

The 69-room hotel dates back to 1910, and is situated in London’s Belgravia neighborhood — known to be one of the most expensive areas in the city.

Amenities include an acclaimed restaurant, an upscale cocktail bar, and a terrace cafe that offers afternoon tea, plus a tranquil garden, a gym and breakfast.

It’s also a short stroll from Buckingham Palace, making it the perfect spot for royals to visit.

The Goring has boasted a close relationship with the royal family for years, and is the only London hotel that has received a special regal stamp of approval.

Queen Elizabeth II awarded the luxe 5-star hotel a royal warrant in 2013 for its hospitality services.

This means that the late monarch declared The Goring to be an official service provider for the royal family.

It was the first — and only — time in history Her Late Majesty gave the royal stamp of approval to a hotel.

While it’s not known exactly why Elizabeth chose to give The Goring a royal warrant, it could perhaps be due to its secrecy.

The hotel is famously discreet about its guests, and seldom reveals any anecdotes or stories about the famous faces that pass through its doors.

Late summer is generally marked by hot days and the desire to squeeze in one more vacation. That's why U.S. News evaluated attractions, events and weather (among other factors) to bring you this list of the best places to visit in August. From mountain reprieves to lake getaways , there's a destination on this ranking for every traveler to enjoy. Vote below to help determine next year's list.

Fiji is an excellent place to visit in August. Although this month falls within Fiji's cooler, drier season, daytime temperatures commonly sit in the low 80s, so you can spend the bulk of your vacation sunbathing on its white sand beaches and swimming in its vibrant blue water. Plus, several of the country's 333 islands – including Taveuni, the Mamanucas and the Yasawas – offer ample opportunities for water sports like surfing and scuba diving. The rich Fiji culture also features all kinds of unique traditions, such as kava and firewalking ceremonies.

When it comes to summer vacations, why settle for one lake when you can visit two? Interlaken – a scenic Swiss town whose name means between lakes – is set in an idyllic spot between the dazzling lakes Thun and Brienz and surrounded by mountains. August temperatures in the mid-70s will allow you to take in the area's natural beauty while hiking, boating or paragliding, though you'll want to pack some rain gear for occasional wet weather. What's more, if you plan your visit around Aug. 1, you'll be able to participate in the area's Swiss National Day celebration, which includes bonfires, a folk festival and a parade.

While a case can be made for a quieter shoulder-season trip, Lake Como is in its prime at the height of summer. Visiting during the high season may mean more tourists and higher room rates, but you'll be able to take in the lakeside towns, villas and beaches at their most lustrous. Take a boat cruise across the lake to stroll through the blooming gardens of iconic villas like Villa Balbianello. Sample peak produce at open-air markets or freshly caught fish in the many dining venues with a view. Or simply see and be seen on one of the area's beaches or lakeside pools.

A trip to Rocky Mountain National Park in August will ensure almost all trails will be accessible and the weather will be pleasant, so you'll have every opportunity to take in the park's mountainous beauty. Wildflowers dot the meadows and bighorn sheep are commonly seen this time of year, too. Popular hikes and vistas become busy this time of year, and you'll need to reserve a timed entry permit available on July 1, but you can easily find quieter options among the park's 355 miles of trails. Combat the crowds by arriving early in the day and taking the park's shuttles instead of driving.

Vancouver, the most populous city in British Columbia, is a vibrant destination that offers something for all visitors. As one of the driest, warmest months (think: temperatures in the low 70s), August is a superb time to take it all in. Thrill-seekers can cross the Capilano Suspension Bridge or hike the grueling Grouse Grind (both just north of the city), while those who prefer a more leisurely outdoor experience can take a Vancouver Harbour cruise or relax on some of the city's beaches. Vancouver Pride Festival also takes place early in the month and features a parade and performances to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

The Mediterranean island of Cyprus has a lot to offer beyond its beaches, including a myth-laden history, but a visit during one of the hottest months of the year will make its sandy stretches look pretty enticing. Sun seekers can bask under cloudless skies, and when the temperatures get too warm (think: 90 degree averages), visitors can cool off by Jet Skiing, swimming and paddleboarding. Later, beach bums and water lovers alike will want to treat themselves to some fresh Cypriot cuisine paired with local wine (including some of the oldest named wine in the world).

August brings some of the warmest temperatures of the year to Montenegro, as well as throngs of travelers looking to bask on this Balkan country's beaches. Montengro's coastline on the Adriatic Sea and its inlets boasts scenic towns like Budva and Kotor, where you'll find charming old towns and blissful stretches of sand. To cool off and escape the crowds, retreat to the country's mountainous interior to hike in destinations like Durmitor National Park and Biogradska Gora National Park.

Kenya's Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Africa's most frequented safari destinations , especially in August when wildlife viewing opportunities are superb. August is usually a great time to catch the Great Migration, an annual journey by more than 2 million wildebeest, zebras and other animals from Tanzania's Serengeti National Park into Masai Mara. What's more, the reserve is a year-round haven for additional animal species, including the big five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes), earning it a reputation as one of Africa's most diverse areas.

Head to Kluane National Park and Reserve in Canada's Yukon region if you want to enjoy an unconventional summer vacation. At this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you'll discover the world's largest nonpolar icefield and Canada's highest mountain, Mount Logan. Sign up for a flightseeing tour to view Kluane's glaciers from the air or take advantage of the mild, incredibly long summer days by exploring the park on foot. A boat ride around Kathleen Lake or a rafting excursion down the Alsek River are also fun ways to admire your surroundings.

America's Finest City is warm and dry in August, giving you ample opportunities to soak up some sun. If you're eager to spend time at the beach, you'll find 70 miles of coastline ideal for everything from surfing to swimming to paddleboarding. Away from the shore, there's Balboa Park, where you can admire beautiful architecture, check out various museums and explore the world-renowned San Diego Zoo . Plus, San Diego is home to an exceptional dining scene and a plethora of live music venues to round out your trip.

Summer is peak season in this Croatian town, so you'll likely rub elbows with other travelers during an August visit. However, Rovinj's beauty will more than make up for the influx of tourists. In August, you can comfortably walk along the car-free cobblestone streets of Rovinj's Old Town thanks to daytime temperatures in the 70s and 80s. This month is also a great time to explore Grisia Street, which hosts an open-air art exhibition in August. With August averages in the 60s and 70s, the weather will be ripe for any outdoor adventure.

Curacao is the perfect destination for those seeking a late summer Caribbean getaway thanks to its location outside the hurricane belt. Sustained daytime temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s mean you'll likely spend most of your vacation lounging on the beach or swimming past marine life, coral reefs and shipwrecks while scuba diving. But the charming, colorful Dutch colonial architecture found in the UNESCO-certified capital – Willemstad – is worth exploring, too. 13 Places To Visit In Britain If You Love The Royal Family

G reat Britain is known for its historic landmarks, beautiful gardens, and passionate sporting culture, yet no other icon is more closely associated with the country than the royal family. For centuries, the world has been fascinated by the lifestyles of kings and queens, from where they live to what they like to eat, but the British royal family remains one of the most recognizable monarchies in the world.

Along with the world's interest, the monarchy's appeal within the United Kingdom is also apparent. Throughout the U.K., there are museums, castles, landmarks, and gardens dedicated to the monarchy, which celebrate the royal family's history and legacy.

While it may seem like royal residences and gilded carriages would be off-limits to the average tourist, it's perfectly possible to get a taste of royal life during your next visit to Britain. Whether you're looking for a history lesson or a spot of the Queen's favorite tea, there are plenty of places to visit if you love the royal family.

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace is a working royal palace and the King's official residence. Built in 1825, Buckingham Palace was commissioned by King George IV who asked architect John Nash to design a grand palace fit for a king within the city of London.

The "palace fit for a king" has a total of 775 rooms, many of them filled with paintings by Old Masters and rare antiques. While the private living quarters are off-limits to visitors, a tour does include the 19 staterooms where the royal family entertains. The White Drawing Room is the grandest of all staterooms, with gilded ceilings and white pilasters; it is frequently the setting for pre-dinner gatherings. The largest is the Ball Room, completed in 1855 during Queen Victoria's reign. It is the setting for concerts and state banquets. The Throne Room holds the two coronation chairs originally commissioned for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, but they were most recently used for the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Buckingham Palace is only open for 10 weeks a year from late July through September while the King is at Balmoral in Scotland on summer holiday. Still, the palace often holds special events for ticket holders throughout the year.

Westminster Abbey

As one of the country's greatest landmarks, Westminster Abbey is a cathedral with 1,000 years of history, much of it tied to the royal family. Originally built as a Benedictine monastery, Westminster Abbey was rebuilt in 1065 by Edward the Confessor, and later rebuilt by King Henry III between 1220 and 1272. Designed in the Gothic style, the cathedral is recognized worldwide as an architectural masterpiece.

Westminster Abbey has been the site of every coronation since 1066, as well as the setting for numerous royal occasions. The Abbey held state funerals for both Queen Elizabeth II, as well as Princess Diana, and was the site of the 2011 wedding of Prince William of Wales and Princess Catherine. Westminster Abbey is also the burial site of more than 3,000 prominent Great Britons, including many royals. Queen Anne, Edward the Confessor, Mary Queen of Scots, and Queen Elizabeth I are all buried here.

St. Paul's Cathedral

Designed by famous architect Sir Christopher Wren, St. Paul's Cathedral in London is a city icon that has been hosting cultural and religious events since 1665. The Baroque-style cathedral sits on Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the city of London. At 365 feet, its dome is one of the highest in the world, and the cathedral was the tallest building in London until 1963. The prominent dome and surrounding church spires are some of the most recognized landmarks in London.

St. Paul's Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral and serves as the seat of the Bishop of London. The cathedral has hosted many prominent religious services, including the state funerals of Margaret Thatcher and Sir Winston Churchill. Both Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II celebrated their Jubilee Services at the cathedral. The wedding of King Charles and Princess Diana was also celebrated at the cathedral in July 1981, which was one of the most-watched television events in history.

As a working cathedral, St. Paul's hosts daily Anglican services, but visitors can purchase tickets for private and self-guided tours. Highlights include The Grand Organ, which has operated since 1695, the throne of the Bishop in the Quire, and The American Memorial Chapel, dedicated to the 28,000 Americans who lost their lives in Britain during World War II.

Hampton Court Palace

Famous for its extensive gardens and maze, Hampton Court Palace is a Tudor masterpiece that has hosted royals since the early 16th century. Originally commissioned by Cardinal Wolsey, Hampton Court caught the attention of King Henry VIII, who eventually made it his home, bringing all six of his wives here.

Henry VIII used the palace as a place to entertain, and its grand design was considered both modern and ostentatious at the time. The centerpiece of the palace is The Great Hall, a towering space designed by Henry VIII that was meant to convey his power. Boasting a magnificent hammerbeam roof, the Great Hall contains artifacts like Anne Boleyn's coat of arms. Many historic events occurred at the palace, including the divorce of Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves. He also married his wife Catherine Howard at the palace.

The palace also served as a working royal residence until the 19th century, when Queen Victoria decided to open it to the public in 1838. Today, visitors can tour the palace, its grounds, and its ornate chapel. One of the most popular sites of Hampton Court is the garden hedge maze. Originally commissioned in the early 1700s, it is the oldest surviving hedge maze in Great Britain.

Tower Of London

While Hampton Court Palace was the location of everyday life for Tudor-era royals, the Tower of London is where some Tudor royals met their end. Built in 1070 by William the Conquerer, the Tower of London was built as a fortress-like structure designed to defend London against its enemies. A mighty stone tower sits as its centerpiece and the structure took 20 years to build with stone imported from France. For the next two centuries, the Tower was expanded to include a defensive wall, an armory, and a national mint. The Tower of London was frequently used to house royals and their precious possessions during times of distress.

The Tower of London has been the site of many tragedies involving the royal family. It is where both Anne Boleyn and Lady Jane Grey spent their final days before execution; it is also where two princes, the children of Edward IV, would perish during the War of the Roses.

Throughout history, the Tower of London has served as a fortress, palace, and prison. Today, it remains one of London's most popular attractions. Visitors can tour the Tower and view its collection of armor or meet one of the 37 Yeoman Warders, also known as Beefeaters, who guard the Tower. The most secure and highly protected wing of the Tower is the Jewel House, which contains more than 23,000 gemstones, including precious tiaras, necklaces, and other gems that make up the official Crown Jewels.

National Portrait Gallery

Established in 1856 by Lord Ellesmere, the National Portrait Gallery is located in the heart of London near Trafalgar Square. One of London's best museums for art-lovers, the gallery has more than 22,000 works and houses the most extensive portrait collection in the world. Recently reopened after a three-year refurbishment, it has thousands of portraits of prominent Britons, from historical leaders like Winston Churchill to contemporary figures like Elton John and David Bowie.

The National Portrait Gallery holds official portraits of every prominent member of the royal family and has extensive collections from the Tudor, Elizabethan, Edwardian, and Victorian reigns. The gallery also contains the official portraits of every modern royal, including King Charles, Kate Middleton, and Prince William. A popular site for tourists, visitors can take guided tours or view rotating exhibitions of British arts and culture. Most recently, the gallery hosted a collection of photography and a Beatles retrospective by Sir Paul McCartney.

London's most famous park was originally founded by the monks of Westminster Abbey until Henry VIII purchased it to use as his hunting grounds. It remained a private park until Charles I permitted the public to access it in 1637. Throughout the park, you can find monuments and statues dedicated to the royal family. The Diana Memorial Fountain, unveiled by Queen Elizabeth in 2004, is built of Cornish granite and is designed to reflect the ebb and flow of Princess Diana's life. The Queen Elizabeth Gates in Hyde Park was designed to honor Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. They were unveiled in 1993 and feature a whimsical design of a lion and a unicorn, representing England and Scotland.

The park's winding paths, lake, and gardens are a popular outing in central London any time of year. At Speakers Corner, visitors can see where radicals used to "get on their soapbox" and preach about everything from politics to religion. The centerpiece of the park is The Serpentine Lake, where visitors can rent paddle boats or dine at the boat house. In the winter, Hyde Park turns into a winter wonderland, with an ice rink, food stands, and a Santaland with carnival rides. Visiting the park is a must-do in London at Christmas .

The Royal Mews

Ever dreamed of seeing a real gilded carriage fit for royalty? At The Royal Mews, a working stable and museum adjacent to Buckingham Palace, you can. The Royal Mews is responsible for all road travel for the King and the Royal Family, from horse and carriage ceremonies to official car processions. The organization has been around since the 14th century, and its headquarters was built in the gardens of Buckingham Palace in 1825.

A visit to the Mews might include seeing one of the stable's Cleveland Bay or Windsor Grey horses, or trying out a replica open carriage like the one Queen Victoria used. Visitors can also see the livery worn by the King's coachmen or learn how to tack a horse on a wooden pony. The real draw, however, is the fleet of carriages used to carry the royal family throughout history, including the 260-year-old Gold State Coach. The coach features gilded woodwork, intricately carved sculpture, and painted panels of Roman gods and goddesses. Weighing over four tons, the carriage has been used to transport the monarchy in every coronation since that of William IV. As a note, The Royal Mews is closed until March 1, 2024.

Madame Tussaud's

It is possible to get close to members of the royal family -- wax versions, that is. The world-famous Madame Tussauds wax museum in London is home to 150 lifelike figures, including members of Britain's royal family. The museum's Royal Palace exhibit includes a throne room with wax figure renderings of every major royal, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, Queen Elizabeth, King Charles, and Queen Camilla.

Open since 1884 on Baker Street in London, Madame Tussauds is a London institution that not only offers a lighthearted look at the world's most famous faces, but the museum has the direct support of the monarchy. The museum's Queen Elizabeth figure is the 23rd incarnation the museum has created throughout her historic 70-year reign. During its creation, Madame Tussauds' sculptors collaborated with Buckingham Palace by providing images of the clay sculptures as they were in progress to create the most authentic and lifelike incarnation of "Her Majesty."

Fortnum And Mason

London's most famous tea shop, Fortnum and Mason , has had a long and storied relationship with the royal family since it was first established in 1707. Founder William Fortnum was originally a footman for Queen Anne. He later established his tea shop with Hugh Mason, and the two would go on to create a culinary empire that still provides tea to the royal family today. The flagship store in Picadilly sells everything from the Royal Blend tea to Sandringham coffee blend and has held a Royal Warrant (products approved by the monarchy) since 1910.

Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was known to do her Christmas shopping annually in person at the store, and every modern royal has visited the shop in recent years. Queen Elizabeth, Queen Camilla, and Princess Catherine all visited together in 2012 for the opening of the store's Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon. Today, thousands of tourists and shoppers visit the store to purchase tea, coffee, and gourmet food as well as the shop's famous Christmas hampers. One can also enjoy a traditional afternoon tea in London in the tea salon where treats like cucumber sandwiches, scones, and pastries are served on the store's iconic blue plates.

Windsor Castle

The oldest occupied castle in the world, Windsor Castle has been home to 40 monarchs. Built by William the Conquerer in the 11th century, Windsor Castle was built high on the River Thames at the edge of hunting grounds. It was designed to serve as a military fortification to guard the western approach to London. King Edward II began converting it into a royal residence in the 14th century.

Windsor Castle remained a preferred residence of royals for centuries and was the favored respite of Queen Victoria, who spent much of her reign here. Today, visitors can see the castle's state apartments or view attractions like Queen Mary's doll house. The Grand Reception Room contains real gold chandeliers and gilded ceilings; as the most luxurious room in the castle, it was Queen Elizabeth II's favorite room to entertain guests.

Another highlight of Windsor Castle is St. George's Chapel, located within the castle grounds. St. George's Chapel is the burial place of 11 monarchs, including Henry VIII, Charles II, and most recently, Queen Elizabeth II. The chapel has also been the site of several royal weddings, including the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as well as The Earl and Countess of Wessex. A worthwhile day trip destination from London , Windsor Castle is located about an hour from the city.

Kensington Palace

Originally built as a modest home known as Nottingham House, Kensington Palace started out as the country retreat of King William in 1687 and was gradually expanded over the years to become the palace that stands today. It was the birthplace of Queen Victoria, who spent most of her childhood here until she moved to Buckingham Palace. Kensington Palace has been home to many royals over the years, including Princess Margaret and Princess Diana. It currently serves as the official London residence of the Duke and Duchess of Wales and their three children.

Visitors to Kensington Palace can see the King's and Queen's State Rooms, as well as a permanent exhibition on the life of Queen Victoria. The exhibit offers a glimpse of her reimagined childhood rooms, as well as her collection of jewelry gifted to her by her beloved husband Albert. Kensington Palace is surrounded by expansive gardens, including the Sunken Garden, an all-white garden dedicated to the memory of Princess Diana. The garden features a statue of the late Princess with her sons, William and Harry. The statue was unveiled in 2017 on what would have been the Princess of Wales' 60th birthday.

The palace museum is open year-round and also hosts seasonal exhibits highlighting the fashion, decor, and history of the royal family. The Orangery at Kensington Palace serves traditional afternoon tea daily, and the palace shop sells an extensive collection of royal-inspired merchandise.

St. James Park

Similar to Hyde Park, Henry VIII originally acquired St. James Park in 1532 to serve as royal hunting grounds. St. James Park is London's oldest Royal Park and one of its most beautiful. The park is bordered on all sides by The Mall, Green Park, Buckingham Palace, and Whitehall. It is also adjacent to Birdcage Walk, the site of the Churchill War Rooms. Listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, the park is laid out in a series of gardens surrounding a small lake. The lake is home to various waterbirds, including the park's famous pelicans, which were introduced as a gift from a Russian ambassador to King Charles II in 1664.

St. James Park's location near The Mall offers an ideal viewing site for royal processions and historical celebrations that occur along the route to Buckingham Palace. It also provides views of The Changing of the Guard from its northern entrance, and from the Blue Bridge, which spans the lake at the center of the park, you can enjoy picture-perfect views of the London Eye and Buckingham Palace.
