A Giraffe Encounter VIP Tour is a new option at Six Flags Great Adventure in 2022.

JACKSON, NJ — Feed the giraffes. Ride Medusa. Feed the passion for fun among your younger thrill-seekers.

These are just a few of the changes parkgoers will find when Six Flags Great Adventure opens for the 2022 season. The Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure is set to open March 19 and the theme park itself is scheduled to open April 2.

After a dozen years of operating as Bizarro, the park's seven-looping roller coaster that opened in 1999 world’s first floorless, top-rail roller coaster is returning to its former name, that of Medusa, the snake-haired Gorgon from Greek mythology. The ride is one of many in the park getting a fresh look, this one with new colors, park officials said.

Find out what's happening in Brick with free, real-time updates from Patch.

Rides for the younger set have been undergoing renovations that finish this year, park officials said. The "Jr. Thrillseekers," previously known as the Safari Kids section, will have eight rides for parents to enjoy with their youngsters, including Lil’ Devil Coaster — the kiddie counterpart to Jersey Devil Coaster — and Barnstormer, which returns for 2022.

At the Wild Safari, the park is launching a new "Giraffe Encounter" Safari VIP tour, where park patrons will take an off-road trip in military-style, open-air trucks through seven sections of the Wild Safari. The experience includes the opportunity to hand-feed giraffes at Wild Safari’s Camp Aventura. Tour guests can also meet small exotic animals up-close.

The safari also has welcomed three new giraffe calves, a new male rhinoceros, and an array of spring babies, officials said. The drive-through tour will feature an entirely new audio tour guests can stream from any mobile device and an expanded, three-lane road with 5 miles of new paving.

The park also is adding the Summer Vibes Festival, July 16 to Aug. 14, with a variety of treats, beverages, "eye-popping spectacles," and live entertainment.

In the theme park there is a new option to shorten wait times for rides, with single-rider lines to fill every available seat on some of the park's most popular rides, including the Jersey Devil Coaster, El Toro, Nitro and Medusa.

The FLASH pass system is changing as well, moving away from the physical pass to a mobile phone app. The mobile phone app will allow parkgoers to make their ride reservations through their phones, eliminating time spent picking up the pass and returning it.

Six Flags is making changes to its mobile app to allow parkgoer to add their season passes or memberships to their Google Pay Wallet or Apple Wallet to reduce wait time at the front gate.

"Our largest range of enhancements in nearly five decades will focus on improving our guests’ experience through technology, innovation, and renovation," said John Winkler, Six Flags Great Adventure president.

Other changes at the park include:

  • Renovations at Yum Yum Café and Granny’s
  • The addition of Fatburger
  • Two family restrooms to accommodate the needs of all guests in the Adventure Alley section
  • Volta electric vehicle charging stations

There are changes to the season pass program, including the availability of "Junior Passes" for those 42 inches or shorter with the purchase of an Extreme or Ultimate pass.

Six Flags is hiring for the 2022 season. Applicants age 14 and older can text FUN to 732-307-6688 or complete an application at www.sixflagsjobs.com . There are flexible hours, perks, and many jobs start at $15 per hour.

VIP Safari Tour worth every penny!

My wife and I splurged and took the VIP Safari tour. What a great experience, especially for animal lovers. Our guides and the zoo staff were amazing. This 2.5 hour tour was the hands down highlight of a weeklong vacation in New Jersey. We had a great time!

This year we did the season pass for all Six Flags resorts so we are working our way through them. We've been to the Six Flags in Springfield, MA and this one has a lot more roller coasters. I do recommend both, however. My advice is shoot for a cloudy day because some of the lines extend into bright sunlight. We went on a rainy day (just sprinkling) and we had hardly no lines at all. Despite the advertisements of other coasters, the Nitro is the best coast in the park followed by Bizarro. Arrive early and do the safari first (back of the park and least crowded when the park first opens) and work your way back from there. We did a few of the shows but I didn't think they were much. The Houdini ride is pretty lame. They have the exact same ride in Springfield and it is a yawner.

I visited the park for the first time in years last Saturday and had a blast. I went with a group of friends and we all had one goal in mind- to ride all of the major roller coasters before leaving the park. To our surprise, the lines were super short and we got on every ride that we wanted to that day. The park was clean and the food and drinks were priced as you would expect for a theme park. As soon as we got to the park, we rode the Batman ride..bad idea! I have never had an issue with roller coasters but I feel like this one is getting pretty old. A couple of us in the group had sore necks after this ride so I would not recommend getting on it first. I would recommend starting out with Nitro since it is a little smoother and gives you a great thrill as a more "classic" coaster. El Toro is hands down my favorite coaster in the park. You MUST ride this before leaving. I also love Kingda Ka, Nitro, and the Superman ride. The ride that you DO NOT have to wait in line for is the Green Lantern. The standing coaster is not as fun and my head/ears were banged up since they were bobbling between the safety equipment that went over my head and chest. I would definitely recommend visiting Six Flags Great Adventure. Make sure to buy your tickets online a head of time because you save almost $25.

My visit was below average, the lines were long as in any amusement park, but it is irritating when you wait over an hour for a ride that breaks as soon as you get to it. We only got on 4 or 5 rides because the lines were so long and 3 of the rides had seat belt malfunctions as in the seat belts either did not work or they came undone during the ride. Employees were not very friendly, I found a lost phone in the bathroom and attempted to find a security guard to turn it in to but I was ignored by all of the employees I approached. When I found a security guard to turn the phone in to, he ignored me but took the phone and walked away. The only reason I will return is because my family has already bought the season passes...

Awesome family fun. We went the Sunday before Memorial Day and it wasn't jam packed. We had plenty of room to move around. The lines weren't long (for an amusement park during the holiday). I do have one issue, the servers/cashiers at most dining spots that we went to (Dining pass holder as well) were VERY RUDE and impatient.

We haven't been to Six Flags in many years and decided it was time! We opted to go in early June in the hopes of avoiding extraordinarily long lines and excessive heat. Apparently, we picked the perfect day! There was rain in the forecast and it was projected to stop raining around 11:30am the day we were scheduled to go. I guess that turned a lot of people off because the park seemed EMPTY! Lines, if present at all, were very short and we were able to hit every ride we wanted with little to no wait time. The only coaster for which we waited was Kingda Ka and that was only about 35 minutes! My favorite ride is Nitro and I rode multiple times with no problems. El Toro was a lot more aggressive than I remember but, as a coaster enthusiast, I loved it. Skull Mountain was closed for "technical issues" so we didn't ride that but we weren't upset. If any ride had to be closed we are glad it was that one and not a "major" ride. We also skipped The Joker as it just didn't look enticing. Bizarro was fun and, we think because it's set so far back, had absolutely ZERO line. We literally walked up the steps and right onto the ride. Green Lantern is new since we last went and that was a lot of fun. However, I'm not sure I enjoy standing and almost felt like I had just had a short leg workout as I think I was clinching my legs to keep myself more steady through the ride. No lines for rides or food made for a perfect day. We usually wind up staying until close because we're unable to get on every ride until well after dark. That was not the case this trip. We were done by 6:30 and still felt that we had a full day with no disappointment.

Here’s what to expect at Six Flags in 2022: Return of Medusa coaster, new giraffe encounter and more

New at Six Flags in 2022

Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, N.J., will launch a new safari VIP experience, the Giraffe Encounter Tour. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Get ready for new rides, events, dining and animal experiences at Six Flags Great Adventure when it opens for the 2022 season.

The Jackson, N.J., theme park will celebrate its largest array of improvements in its nearly 50-year history.

The investment will feature beautification and modernization efforts throughout the theme park and Wild Safari, such as: increased capacity and streamlined operations in rides, food service and admissions; new theming and reintroduction of several popular rides for daredevils and junior thrill-seekers; aesthetic and comfort enhancements in both parks; the debut of popular food brands and new dining options; a major summer event and more guest amenities.

“Our largest range of enhancements in nearly five decades will focus on improving our guests’ experience through technology, innovation and renovation,” said park President John Winkler. “As the Northeast’s premier family entertainment destination, we’re laser-focused on providing incredible guest service in a beautiful, modern and state-of-the art environment.”

Thrill-seekers can look forward to the return of the snake-haired Gorgon to Frontier Adventures — a seven-looping beast unveiled in 1999 as the world’s first floorless, top-rail roller coaster, Medusa.

The ride was re-branded to BIZARRO just 10 years later, but will return in its original form with a new color palette, logo, and Gold Rush-era back story, according to Six Flags.

New at Six Flags in 2022

Six Flags will also complete its two-year renovation of the action-packed section called Jr. Thrillseekers.

Formerly known as Safari Kids, the park’s largest family area will offer eight rides, all perfect for parents to enjoy with their young children, like Lil’ Devil Coaster — the kiddie counterpart to Jersey Devil Coaster — and Barnstormer, which is returning for 2022. The section will also feature shopping, dining and new, shaded seating.

Additionally, Six Flags will add single-rider lines to Jersey Devil Coaster, El Toro, Nitro and Medusa. These lines shorten wait times by filling in every available seat.

And to improve the guest experience through enhanced ride line speed and efficiency, Six Flags will transition its’ THE FLASH Pass Q-bot to mobile Q SMART technology. Through a mobile app, guests can maximize their time in the park and spend less time waiting in line and more time enjoying rides, dining, shopping and entertainment.

Another new mobile app feature will allow guests to add their pass to their Google Pay Wallet or Apple Wallet to expedite the front gate entrance experience and reduce wait time.

Here’s a look at some of the highlights for the 2022 season at Six Flags Great Adventure:

  • “Wow” Moments – In 2022, more emphasis will be placed on creating “Wow” moments through fun and memorable guest interactions, beautiful landscaping views, additional seating for relaxation, and a massive, new marquee on Rt. 537.

  • Volta Electric Vehicle Charging Stations – Compatible with all electric vehicles, units will be available in the theme park, water park and safari parking lots.
  • Summer Vibes Festival – As sun-kissed dreams come to life, guests will drench themselves in a kaleidoscope of color at this new, summer festival, which will run July 16 to Aug. 14. This off-road adventure on military-style, open-air trucks will feature an informative and engaging tour guide through seven sections of the Wild Safari and the opportunity to hand-feed giraffes at Wild Safari’s Camp Aventura. Tour guests can also meet small exotic animals up-close. Tour tickets may be purchased in advance or at the park.
  • BATMAN The Ride – The epic, floorless, chairlift-style BATMAN The Ride will return with a bold, shiny coat of paint. This five-looping scream machine continues to rank as a fan favorite as it approaches its 30th birthday.

Review: A Look at the Safari Tour at Six Flags Great Adventure

Posted on September 30, 2014 by Clint Novak - Blog

Around the halfway point we get to stop at Camp Aventura.  A small group of us got off at this point to check out the small area in the middle of this huge safari.  Its fenced off from the other animals, and highlights small animals you would not see on the tour.  Snakes, birds, and Ant Eater.  Here we were able to do the two up charge attractions: The Soaring Eagle Zip Line, and feed the giraffes.  It cost us around $12 per person with a discount to do both.

10717905_10203785594738314_535238965_n

After our fun at Camp Aventura, we made our way back on to a truck with a new tour guide.  This one I did not like as much.  She kicked everything off great, but we did not go off the main road to find cool animals, and she turned her mic off a lot and answered questions that people had in the front row.  But we were in the back and could not understand what she was saying.  There was a lot of dead time where we were driving around looking at stuff but she was not talking to us.

Over all I highly recommend this tour.  I have done Disney’s Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safaris a few times and it was okay, but they do not have the freedom to go where the animals are.  They are on a track and drive that same track every time.  I have also enjoyed a tour at Busch Gardens Tampa.  Very cool tour where there is no path.  You just drive out in to the safari and find the animals. Six Flags Great Adventure has the best safari ride yet! Keep up the good work.

The guest rooms will look like tents resembling “authentic African lodges,” said Staci Wheeler, Six Flags Great Adventure spokesperson. The resort will be the first of its kind within the Six Flags brand, Wheeler said.

“The campsite will be located in the middle of our Wild Safari," Wheeler said. "We will have a number of animals that freely roam around the enclosed campsite."

The safari animals will stay on site year-round with climate-controlled indoor housing available for all tropical animals. A full-time animal care team will look over their well-being, said Wheeler.
