The Creative Behind the Books

Aaron Becker learned while living in Granada, Spain, that many of the city’s stone churches had at one point been mosques and, before that, Roman ruins. Which got him thinking: What wisdom can something as still as a rock share with the rest of us? While he could only guess at the answer, he does have some experience with these ancient fragments of earth. After all, the house where he grew up in Baltimore was built from, you guessed it, stone. Aaron Becker lives in western Massachusetts.

Children’s Book Review: The Journey Trilogy by Aaron Becker

November 5, 2016 by krisis

[Patreon-Nov16-Post-Bug][/Patreon-Nov16-Post-Bug]The first time I encountered a wordless picture book for children was  Journey at my mother’s house nearly a year ago. Long before we had ventured to the library she was already cycling through books for EV every time she visited.

journey-aaron-becker-interior-01

Over the summer, E bought EV a wordless book called  Pool . I was skeptical of it at first, recalling EV’s disinterest in  Journey . Then, I watched something magic begin to happen. E kept making up the story of  Pool , and EV began to  interact with the story . Sometimes she interjected to add something from a prior telling, others she inserted her own details.

I took a turn reading it to her, and I noticed different facets of it than E, so my telling was a shade different. If I asked nicely enough and didn’t make a big deal about it, EV would even “read”  Pool to me.

Pool was one of our most-read books during the summer. When E was listing off books from her want-list for our request list for the library and mentioned  Journey , my ears pricked up.

I wondered – how would EV like the book now that she was older and more engaged in the shared creation of a story? Would  Journey include both enough narrative and enough ambiguity to make for as interesting a read as Pool?

What a difference a few months made!

The Journey Trilogy: Journey, Quest , and Return by Aaron Becker

journey-aaron-becker

Gender Diversity: Female protagonist; most other characters are male, although background characters are sometimes agender.

Ethnic Diversity: None, unfortunately

Challenging Language: None!

Themes to Discuss: imagination, fantasy, canals, cooperation

Reading Time: Depends on the reader! Between 4-15 minutes each, for us.

The Journey Trilogy by Aaron Becker is a beautiful, brilliant, fantastical trio of wordless adventure books by with a capable little girl hero, each with plenty of room for interpretation and expansion in the retelling. Becker proves himself an ingenious storyteller with an eye for detail and a knack for tantalizing ambiguity.

Journey   is the story of a young girl who uses a piece of red chalk to travel to a fantastic world by drawing a door on her bedroom walk. In that world, she learns that the chalk can draw anything out of thin air.

After sailing through a town built on a series of canals, she encounters a group of soldiers flying in zeppelins are trying to catch a vivid purple bird. The girl tries to save the bird, but she’s captured herself, and the two work together so she can get free. The bird leads her to a door just like her own, except it’s the same color as the bird! On the other side, she is back in the real world down the street from her house, where she meets a boy with purple chalk.

journey-aaron-becker-interior

The easiest example is the red chalk itself. The girl finds it on the floor of her room. Is it the first time she has encountered it? The natural urge is to say yes, as that fits with how stories like this one are usually told. However, she already owns a matching red scooter and red ball which she has been carrying around the house with her. Is it a coincidence that red is her favorite color, or had she created with the chalk before?

These points of interpretation abound in  Journey , and they’re part of what makes it so fun in the retelling. Does the girl mean to steer her little red boat to the top of the highest canal? Is it she or the the bird who engineers the magic carpet that will fit through the bars of her cage? Where do she and the boy find the body of a bike that they draw wheels for at the end of the book?

That’s what makes  Journey perfect for a small reader who can interact with you while you read. The details that EV noticed and questions she asked shaped out version of the story. Sometimes it’s a very plain, descriptive version that simply explains the action on each page. Others it unfurls in the telling like a florid fairy tale, full of little asides and descriptions of the girl’s inner monologue.

Journey would already be a surefire recommendation if it stood alone, but Aaron Becker extended the story into two additional books –  Quest and  Return – that are somehow even more captivating than  Journey itself!

quest-aaron-becker

Return begins similarly to  Journey  – the girl decides to travel to her secret world when her father doesn’t play with her. This time, her father follows her to her room and discovers the open door and the fantastical world on the other side. He finds the girl, boy, and king meeting together, but they’re interrupted with the guards and a machine that can vacuum up their colorful creations – and their chalk! A chase ensues, in which the girl’s father sees all the ingenious ways she’s learned how to use the chalk. However, they have to work together to figure out how to protect the girl’s red chalk from capture and free the king and the boy from the grips of the guards.

There is so much to love in both books, but I’ll simply highlight my favorite element of each.

quest-aaron-becker-interior

My main telling has the boy as much more tentative and unsure than the girl to emphasize how strong encouragement makes her a good leader and friend. However, there are other times I put them on more equal footing, or have them bicker amusingly. Sometimes the girl is cautious, while others she is headstrong and needs to be reeled back in by the boy.

Each person I’ve watched read it with EV gives the pair their own balance. The only thing you cannot really exclude is that the girl is clearly the protagonist of the series.

Return is  The Empire Strikes Back of the trilogy, because the introduction of the father to the story includes several potentially mind-blowing revelations that fundamentally change the story depending on how much you fixate on the details of the book.

return-aaron-becker

  • The father appears to be drawing at his work desk – what is his job or hobby?
  • A door similar to the girl’s can be spotted in the father’s office early in the book. Does it already (or did it ever) lead to the fantasy world?
  • The father and the girl both have looks of shock on their faces when they meet in the fantasy world. What is it that surprises each of them? What is it that causes the girl’s subsequent cross-armed reticence?
  • The girl and her father encounter a series of seemingly prophetic sketches in a cave. How did they get there?
  • Did the father always have the ability to draw in the world with his gray work pencil, or did something happen to cause it to be useful? And, do you think the gray looks similar to the gray of the guard’s armor?

If you read between the lines in those questions, you can see that there is an intriguing meta-narrative about the father that might change the meaning of the prior books depending on your interpretation. This is just one example of how the books open themselves up to growing in the retelling.

When I evaluate if a purchase was worthwhile, I do so on a matrix of dollars invested vs. time enjoyed vs. intensity of enjoyment. If I apply that matrix to the  Journey  books they are a relatively flat shape of nearly infinity length and width – meaning, they weren’t that expensive but there is  no end to the time and amount of enjoyment EV gets from them. She walks around the house with them clutched tightly to her little chest, and will sit for an hour retelling the stories to her stuffed animals and toys.

My sole critique of Journey is that Becker missed an easy opportunity to diversify his cast in making the little boy anything other than white. We don’t meet any of his relatives (OR DO WE?), so his whiteness doesn’t create consistency with any other element of the book. Having him be a kid of color who makes fast friends with the girl and joins in her adventure would only add to the wordless power of these books in displaying friendship, loyalty, and cooperation.

The  Journey  Trilogy is breathtaking modern classic of fantasy from Aaron Becker that can captivate kids from age 2 to 102. All it takes to enjoy them is an imagination and a willingness to get lost in the beautiful details of his fantasy world. If your toddler isn’t quite enough for it yet, she’ll get there.

What to Expect: A Wordless Adventure

Sometimes there are no words to describe a book. And sometimes, there are no words in the actual book itself. Journey is one of those books—it’s both wordless and wondrous.

When a young girl draws a magic door on her bedroom wall and goes through it with her red marker, she leaves a drab-colored world and enters a magical world filled with color and adventure. Using a colored marker, she creates ways to navigate this unknown place: a boat, a balloon, a flying carpet, and a tandem bike. Amongst the world’s beauty, there is also danger, and an evil emperor captures the girl. How will she escape? How will she return home?

No spoiler here, but an unexpected friendship is the outcome of this incredibly gorgeous tale told only by the artwork on the pages. The little girl is adventurous, courageous, and kind and knows how to have fun. She will inspire you to take your own imaginative journey if you can tear yourself away from this incredible book.

The first book in a trilogy, Journey by Aaron Becker, won a most prestigious award—a Caldecott Honor Book in 2014.

Storms almost dampened Steve Miller Band, Journey and Def Leppard at Nashville's Nissan Stadium

Portrait of Melonee Hurt

From Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker,” and Journey’s “Faithfully,” to Def Leppard’s “Photograph,” Saturday night at Nissan Stadium was all about the crowd’s favorite songs. Decades worth of songs that seemingly everyone in the crowd knew every word to, even though some were from 40 years ago.

While rain poured down on Nissan Stadium less than an hour before Steve Miller Band was set to take the stage, the storms, which sent those already inside the stadium into safe places due to lightening, by showtime had rolled out and a nice breeze had settled in.

Miller, who you’d never guess is 80 years old, clad in a light blue dress shirt and black pants, reminded the crowd why he’s still doing what he does more than 50 years after his first hit. He has a catalog packed full of iconic songs and he can still sing and play them with ease.

More music: From country to indie: Here are the top Nashville albums of 2024 so far

Backstory: Jack White didn't just release a surprise album — he made a stand for rock mystique

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Miller took the stage a 6 p.m. with his Fender Stratocaster around his neck and began to play the familiar riff of “Fly Like an Eagle.” From there he rolled through “Take the Money and Run,” “Rock ‘n Me Baby” and “Abracadabra,” which he dedicated to Eminem.

“He asked me if he could use this song and I didn’t want to get in a beef with Slim Shady, so I said ‘send it to me and I’ll check it out,’” Miller told the crowd. That ask became the building blocks for “Houdini” Eminem's 2024 single which debuted at the top of the Billboard Global 200 charts and it was, “all riding on those ‘Abracadabra’ tracks recorded in 1982.”

Miller wound up his hour-long set with familiar tunes such as “Jungle Love,” “The Joker,” and “Jet Airplane.”

Journey took the stage by storm. Literally.

As Journey took the stage around 7:30 p.m., the second wave of storms began to form over Nissan Stadium. The sky looked eerily dark and foreboding, but the band took the stage to celebrate their 50 th anniversary despite the weather.

Thirty minutes in, rain started to fall in perfect timing with keyboard player Jonathan Cain’s piano solo. It was a beautiful moment that never escalated into a show-stopping storm. Just a gentle rain as a beautiful backdrop to Schon’s cherry red grand piano.

The rain couldn't silence the powerhouse of a band that is Journey. Fronted by singer Arnel Pineda, who in 2007 took the helm as the spot-on vocal replacement for original lead singer Steve Perry, the band is able to flawlessly pull off original songs that are known for Perry's trademark vocals from "Faithfully," and "Open Arms," to "Only the Young," and "Wheel in the Sky."

While guitarist Neal Schon is the last remaining original member of Journey, Cain dates back to 1980 with the band.

Cain introduced a song he wrote about the sacrifices musicians make while on the road, saying to the crowd, "This was written on a late-night bus ride from New York City in 1982. These days," he added, "I get to thinking about other people making sacrifices. That would be the men and women who serve in our armed forces. So let's send this song like a prayer, and keep them out of harm's way."

The band launched into "Faithfully."

After rolling through hit after hit, Pineda and Cain came onstage wearing custom Tennessee Titans jerseys with the number "24" on the front for "Wheel in the Sky."

Drummer Deen Castronovo gave Pineda a run for his money on "Lights," where he sang (very well, we might add) and played the drums.

The band saved their biggest hit for last and went out with a bang (literally, with streamers being shot out of cannons,) with "Don't Stop Believin.'"

Def Leppard revisits "Pyromania" album 40 years later

Unlike many bands that date back to the late 1970s, Def Leppard's current lineup has been consistent since 1992 when guitarist and vocalist Vivian Campbell joined the band to replace Steve Clark, who died in 1991.

And it shows. The five-piece consisting of singer and founding member Joe Elliott, bassist and founding member Rick Savage, drummer Rick Allen, guitarist and vocalist Phil Collen and Campbell put on a rock show that was laced with proficiency and a dash of swagger all held together with a chart-topping catalog of songs.

From "Bringin' On the Heartbreak," which dates back to 1982, through the many hits that came from the "Pyromania" album such as "Photograph," and "Rock of Ages," the members of Def Leppard proved they've still got it. Guitarists Campbell and Collen took turns on lead guitar, often playing together as well as backing each other up.

Midway through their set, Elliott came to the front of the massive catwalk with an acoustic guitar. Before playing, he urged the crowd to turn around and get a glimpse of the full moon that had been revealed as the clouds had rolled away. He then played "Two Steps," before being joined down front by the rest of the band. They dedicated "This Guitar" to the band's longtime friend Nashvillian Alison Krauss.

The British rockers wrapped up the night with smash hits including "Hysteria," and the band's anthem, "Pour Some Sugar on Me," which was sung entirely by the masses inside Nissan Stadium giving Elliott a run for his money.

Before leaving the stage, Elliott thanked the Nashville crowd saying, "Let's do it again soon."

"Until next time — and there will be a next time," he told the crowd. "Don't forget us and we won't forget you."

Sports columnists | renck: vernon davis, super bowl 50 champion with broncos, discusses mental health, overcoming tragedy in new book, creativity defines davis, who has become actor, producer and author in retirement.

Vernon Davis (80) of the Denver Broncos addresses the media at Super Bowl Opening Night at SAP Center on February 1, 2016 in San Jose, Calif.

Former San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Singletary raged about tight end Vernon Davis in 2008 in one of the most memorable NFL postgame press conferences ever.

“Cannot play with ’em. Cannot win with ’em. Cannot coach with ’em,” Singletary roared after he sent Davis to the locker room during a game following his personal foul for slapping a Seattle Seahawks player. “Can’t do it. I want winners.”

The scathing response humiliated Davis. It could have jeopardized their friendship, but instead, it became a defining moment, a turning point. Davis made a mockery of the outburst, shedding his selfishness. He became a winner, boasting a Super Bowl 50 ring for his half-season with the Broncos. And he is succeeding in life, reinventing himself as an actor, producer and, in August, an author, when “Playing Ball,” his memoir on his path to the NFL and beyond, comes out.

Singletary wrote the foreword.

Playing Ball: Life Lessons from My Journey to the Super Bowl and Beyond Hardcover - Aug. 20, 2024..by Vernon Davis (Author)

“We always stayed in touch. I am close to his family. I viewed what happened as something I could grow from,” Davis said. “Everyone saw the rant, but they didn’t see what was going on behind the scenes. He was always talking to me in the lunchroom, giving me advice, talking to me about God and family.”

Davis, 40, arrived in Denver midseason in 2015. The idea was that he would provide speed on seam routes and allow coach Gary Kubiak to employ more two-tight-end sets with Davis, Owen Daniels and Virgil Green. Pairing Davis with future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, who was limping through his worst season, was supposed to give the passing attack a boost. Instead, they played seven quarters together as Manning dealt with plantar fasciitis in his foot. Davis caught 20 passes on 28 targets for 201 yards over the final nine weeks. His playoff highlight was a downfield block to help extend a 34-yard second-quarter run by running back C.J. Anderson in the Super Bowl.

The transition to a new offense midstream proved difficult. But for Davis, the ring is a testament to his career (two Pro Bowl berths, three All-Pro teams) and a crowning achievement that goes beyond the numbers.

“Denver was a really amazing experience. Guys will play for 15 years and never have an opportunity to win a Super Bowl,” Davis said. “It was meant to be. Most people figure you are supposed to win with the team that drafted you. But it doesn’t always happen like that. The hard work paid off, just in mysterious ways.”

As the sixth overall selection in the 2006 draft, Davis finished with 7,562 receiving yards and 63 touchdowns. The statistics offered only fragments of his story. Davis was straight out of central casting at 6-foot-3, 248 pounds. His physicality camouflaged mental health challenges. He began confronting issues halfway through his career, seeking therapy and leaning on his faith.

Talking about it, he stressed, remains important.

“Mental health is huge, and unless you are going through it, it’s hard to understand. I struggled with panic disorder and anxiety. Some days are tougher than others. Unless you have been there you don’t know how it feels,” Davis said. “It’s a big deal. For me to be able to share this and bring hope and inspiration, you can’t ask for anything better than that. I feel like that’s my duty, that’s my job, my obligation to be able to create awareness.”

When football ended, Davis’ curiosity did not. He has filmed more than 30 projects and acted in six movies, including as a murderer in “Ritual Killer” with Morgan Freeman.

Athleticism does not translate seamlessly to acting. But Davis’ life and sports journey prepared him for the long hours and attention to detail.

“I love creating. I love taking something from its infancy stage and forming it. And I did learn my discipline from sports,” Davis said. “It dates back to when I was a kid growing up in a neighborhood that wasn’t ideal for raising a family. How do you make it out of a situation like that? It takes resilience. And it takes discipline.”

Davis wasn’t sure he wanted to tell his story. He figured he should wait until he’s older. But his experience, he believes, can help others. His career changed in a moment because of a news conference. He overcame long odds to reach the NFL and several challenges to stay productive through the 2019 season.

And yet, he has never stopped evolving. Any doubt he had about his book changed when Davis confronted tragedy. His brother Vontae, a standout NFL cornerback, died April 1 at the age of 35 .

“That’s one of the toughest moments I have ever dealt with. He’s someone I have talked to every day since we had cell phones. He was my best friend, my brother, like a son, all of the above. I couldn’t have asked for a better little brother,” Davis said.

“To have him pass before me, it is something you never think about happening. I know I am going to see him again someday. But it showed once again that there is no expiration date on life. That’s one of the things I talk about in my book, and why now is the time to release it. Tomorrow is never promised.”

8 Books for Better Sex

Sex educators, counselors and coaches recommend their favorites.

An illustration of a couple sitting on a bed engaged in a conversation. The bed is actually a hardcover book with a dark blue cover and white pages.

By Hope Reese

When Joan Price published her book in 2006, she didn’t expect hundreds of letters to pour in. At 61, she wrote “Better Than I Ever Expected: Straight Talk About Sex After Sixty,” to celebrate the delights of sex in her later years. But readers had a few questions.

“‘Good for you that you’re having great sex, but I’m not,’” Ms. Price recalled them sharing; they wanted to know how they could have better sex, too.

So her next book “Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud About Senior Sex ” included answers to real questions from people in later stages of life who wanted to “improve or recapture their sex lives."

People over 50 aren’t the only ones who have questions. Sex can be a vital part of personal well-being, but that doesn’t mean it is intuitive, said Dr. Alexandra Stockwell, host of “The Intimate Marriage Podcast.” Thankfully, she added, “sex is a learnable skill.”

Books can present a great opportunity to educate, demystify and build confidence. So we asked 14 sex coaches, counselors and educators to share titles that can help guide your exploration.

1. Come Together , by Emily Nagoski

Many of the experts said that Dr. Nagoski is one of the most important sex educators publishing today. “She’s somehow married ‘professional scientist researcher’ with the BFF you wish was in your head,” Dr. Stockwell said.

In this 2024 title, Dr. Nagoski shares tools for couples looking to maintain their sexual intimacy. “She acknowledges the emotional realities of sex rather than just focusing on, like, genitals,” said Bonnie Bliss, a somatic sexologist based in Melbourne, Australia.

2. Naked at Our Age , by Joan Price

Jodie Milton, a relationship and intimacy coach, calls Ms. Price’s 2011 book “permission-granting” and “liberating.”

Ms. Price is “fierce and unapologetic in addressing the ways in which we marginalize the sexuality of older folks,” said Alexandra Solomon, on faculty at Northwestern University and host of the podcast “Reimagining Love.” This book, she added, helps older adults view their sexuality “without apology, without shame and with accommodation, levity, humor and joy.”

3. She Comes First , by Ian Kerner

Orgasm is not always the goal of sex, and a lot of good sex happens without it, Ms. Bliss said. Still, it’s important to acknowledge the “ orgasm gap ,” the fact that women in heterosexual relationships have fewer orgasms than men do.

To this end, this 2010 title by Dr. Kerner offers a clear argument for female pleasure through oral sex, Ms. Price said. It explores “why you should care about that, and when you should do it,” she said.

Shan Boodram, a sex educator and host of the podcast “Lovers and Friends,” calls the book essential reading. “I felt comfortable passing this along to other men, because it was a book written by a man who was also admitting to his own shortcomings, his own misconceptions, and talking about his own journey,” she said.

4. Sex for One , by Betty Dodson

In the ’70s and ‘80s, Dr. Dodson invited groups of women to sit in a circle and self-pleasure, said Jeremy Shub, a Berlin-based sex coach and educator who calls Dr. Dodson a personal inspiration. Dr. Dodson, who died in 2020, was considered a pioneer in destigmatizing masturbation.

This guidebook, first published in 1987, is filled with illustrations “helping people see that masturbation is a healthy, natural form of sexual expression,” Ms. Bliss said. “That there’s nothing shameful about it.”

5. Women’s Anatomy of Arousal , by Sheri Winston

The medical field has been slow to accurately capture female anatomy , with many early textbooks missing the full structure of the clitoris, for instance. In 2010, Ms. Winston, a gynecology nurse-practitioner and midwife, helped bridge the gap by publishing a comprehensive anatomy guide with diagrams.

“It’s stuck around as a sex educator’s Bible,” Ms. Bliss said. “Nothing else has been written that goes this deeply into female pleasure and anatomy and sexuality in such a practical way.”

6. Disability Intimacy , edited by Alice Wong

This 2024 collection of personal stories — essays, photo essays, poetry and more — highlights both the roadblocks and joys of intimacy for people who live with a range of disabilities.

Ms. Wong, founder and director of the Disability Visibility Project, has “sparked many conversations amongst my colleagues,” said Laura Millar, a sex educator who focuses on the blind community. The book, Ms. Millar says, extends beyond sexuality, to include sexual health and public health. It’s a starting point for anyone interested in “fostering inclusive and empathetic discussions,” she said.

7. Better Sex Through Mindfulness , by Lori A. Brotto

This 2018 title includes stories from women who have experienced sexual blocks and offers practical mindfulness tools to overcome them.

“A lot of people struggle to ‘get out of our heads’ during sex and intimacy,” said Amy Julia Cheyfitz, a sex therapist based in the Washington area, “and Dr. Brotto’s book provides insight and understanding into challenges around sex.”

8. You Are Not Broken , by Kelly Casperson

Dr. Casperson is a urologist in Bellingham, Wash., who spent years advising men on their sexual health. But after an encounter with a woman dealing with the loss of libido, Dr. Casperson realized how few resources there were for women.

This “fabulous, inclusive, nonjudgmental guide” goes a long way in undoing the shame that many people feel, said Dr. Karen Tang, a gynecologist and author of “It’s Not Hysteria.” “You feel like you’re getting information from a friend, who happens to be a sexual health expert.”

What to Know About Your Sexual Health

Sexual health can be an important part of personal well-being. the information below can help you demystify this often misunderstood topic..

A common antibiotic, doxycycline, greatly reduced cases of syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia when taken every day , a study found.

More than half of men over 40 will experience some kind of erectile problem, and the prevalence increases with age (though men in their 20s and 30s can be affected, too). Here’s what to do about it .

Older daters are not getting adequate screening and protection from S.T.I.s. Here’s how to be a safer sexually active senior .

Any physical activity can improve your sexual health. But these five exercises  are especially beneficial.

New regimens in development, including once-weekly pills and semiannual shots , could help control H.I.V. in hard-to-reach populations.

Many women will deal with a yeast infection at least once in their lifetimes. Luckily, there are plenty of effective solutions .

It's been quite a journey, says British Open winner Schauffele

Joe Mauer reflects on journey to Cooperstown ahead of Hall of Fame induction Sunday

  • Minnesota Twins

This Sunday, Joe Mauer becomes the seventh Twins player to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

"You want to touch on a lot of different things because it takes more than just me to get to where I’m at," Mauer told MLB Network's Robert Flores in an appearance on the MLB Network Podcast on Friday. "A lot of people to thank and you’re reflecting on a lot of different things that happened over your journey. You want to recognize that and try to do the best you can to articulate that.”

Mauer earned 76.1% of votes earlier this year to become a first ballot inductwee. He will join Dave Winfield, Paul Molitor and Jack Morris as the fourth St. Paul, Minnesota native to be enshrined in Cooperstown.

The Twins legend retired in 2018 after a glittering 15-year career, all in Minnesota, that included winning the 2009 MVP, three Gold Glove awards, five Silver Slugger awards and three batting titles.

Speaking on his life after stepping away from the game, Mauer said: "It's been great."

“It was a lot busier than I imagined," he continued. "So, I retired at 35, my girls were 5 and I retired on a ... Monday in November and that Wednesday Chip [Mauer] was born. So, my son, my third child, was born on that Wednesday. So, I dove right in, both feet in, with Chip. I haven’t stopped since."

In looking back at his journey to baseball, Mauer recalled his passion for playing multiple sports in high school.

“I love football. I was a quarterback and I have friends of mine and they like to say I like to be in the middle of everything on a field," said Mauer. "Having the ball and trying to decide where to go with it and working with all your teammates, I always liked the position of your teammates looking for you to make a play. At catcher, shooting guard, point guard in basketball, I just enjoyed it. Enjoyed competing. Had a ball playing all three sports.”

Mauer was a multi-sport star for Cretin-Derham Hall, playing football, baseball and basketball. Before choosing baseball, Mauer was a highly recruited football star, earning a scholarship offer from Florida State to play quarterback. When asked about then FSU head coach Bobbie Bowden's recruitment overtures, Mauer reflected saying Bowden was "very involved" in trying to get him to commit.

"He, in fact, was the only college (coach) to come up to Minnesota to watch me play basketball. He came up, and I remember it was the middle of the winter. I remember my dad asking him why he was so adamant about coming to watch me play basketball and he said ‘Well, number one I’m looking for athletes.’ He goes ‘I could teach your son how to play football,’" recalled Mauer. "He wanted to see how I moved on the court, how I interact with teammates and how I dealt with all sorts of things thrown at you on a basketball court.

"Getting to know Coach Bowden was a tremendous honor. I’ll never forget the story of when I was on my official visit down there. I was in his office, and obviously I had baseball and that option. He told me, ‘I’m going to go out there and still get the best quarterbacks available because you might not be here this fall.’ I in-turn told him ‘Get whoever you want. If I’m here this fall, my intention is to win this job and a job like this isn’t handed over. But if I’m here this fall, I’m going to compete and try to win this job.’ I remember him smiling and looking at me, [he] leaned back in his chair and said, ‘Boy I sure hope you can’t hit a curveball.’”

Ultimately, he chose to join the Twins after Minnesota selected him with the first-overall pick in the 2001 MLB Draft. Mauer said Bowden wrote him "the nicest letter" offering to hold a scholarship for him if baseball didn't work out.

On what his dad, who passed away in 2023, would think of Mauer's induction into the Hall of Fame, Mauer said: "He'd love it."

"He'd have a big smile on his face. My Dad would never say a whole lot, my Grandpa would. My Dad would kind of sit back and smile, take it all in. Yeah, I think he’d absolutely love it. Definitely thankful for all the lessons he’s taught me over the years.”

The 2024 National Baseball Hall of Fame induction takes place this Sunday, starting at 12:30 p.m. and can be watched on MLB Network.
