Read What Our Clients Are Saying About Us

World Travels, LLC helped me to plan a trip for myself and 9 family members in Cabo. While COVID cancelled our original June 2020 plan, Shenita and her company worked with us to get everything rebooked and rescheduled for June 2021. She was responsive and intentional with her communication. She kept us on schedule with deadlines and timetables and communicated with us until the time of our departure and soon after we returned home! I would recommend World Travels, LLC and I look forward to using them again in the future.

Happy Clients

Shenita and her staff at World Travels are phenomenal! This is the 2nd all-inclusive trip that I've booked through them and I am ready planning the 3rd. Riu Baja California Palace is impeccable and her recommendations were incredible. As far as the eye could see, powdery sand and crystal clear turquoise water were marvelous. Shenita is top notch and treats clients amazingly well.

Dr. Tameka L.

Shenita was excellent to work with in planning our honeymoon in Bora Bora!!!!! We were lost until contacting her. She planned everything from the beginning to the end. Very informative and responsive. We definitely will utilize her and her team in the future! We appreciate you so much! XO, Mr. & Mrs. Davis

I’ve booked two trips with World Travels and the service was great. Our honeymoon was no exception. Shenita and Cassie helped us navigate the COVID-19 restrictions in Hawaii, found an amazing luxury adults only resort and was available to us throughout the trip for any issues that came up. It was great to have our transportation needs to and from the airport already scheduled as well. I highly recommend her team.

Danielle C.

World Travels gave me the best of both worlds. From their amazing customer service to an affordable & hassle-free travel experience, I’m extremely satisfied. My experience with this company left me breathless (in a good way!) Shenita booked me in amazing resort with beautiful amenities and excellent cuisine and service. Destination: Cancun, Mexico

Shenita was very easy to work with and I would definitely use her again. My trip to St. Lucia was everything I wanted it to be. My accommodations were beyond my expectations. I would highly recommend.

I have worked with World Travels twice and both have been enjoyable experiences. The team is very responsive to questions and always willing to make suggestions of things to do on your trip. They arranged ground transportation for us and coordinated reasonable payment plans for the group. The team is knowledgeable of various destinations and the best places to stay.

Shenita is an amazing travel agent! She was very patient with me during the planning process. She is , accessible, knowledgeable, and accommodating! I highly recommend her for any travel needs. I plan to utilize her service again for my next trip.

Timeirya K.

Shenita and her staff did an amazing job planning our Couple's Cancun Trip. She planned everything from beginning to end. Our trip was everything we wanted. Her recommendations and suggestions were very helpful. We will use World Travels LLC again.

This was a trip of fun and memories for a life time of anniversary .

My very first solo trip to San Pedro, Belize and World Travels did an amazing job. They planned everything out for me which relieved the anxiety and stress I had. The villa was gorgeous and the staff was top notch! I am definitely keeping World Travels as my agent from now on!

It was so reassuring to work with Shenita and her team. They were resourceful, dependable, and most importantly knowledgeable. They offered suggestions and went above and beyond to exceed my expectations.

World Travels LLC planned my 40th birthday trip. Shenita made it the process so easy that I didn't have to worry about the stress of organizing a trip. I will definitely use this service for a future trip. Highly recommend!

Houston Travel Guide

There are cities that claim to be melting pots, but they can't compare to Houston. There is no single racial or ethnic majority here, and 25 of every 1,000 refugees in the world settles down to stay. Each community in this sprawling, highway-riddled metropolis brings its own flavor to Texas' "by your bootstraps" spirit, meaning you can get Ethiopian kifto, Vietnamese pho, Mexican mole, and good ole' Texas barbecue within a 10-mile radius. There's culture at every turn here, with more than 150 museums throughout the city—and a March rodeo that puts the rest to shame. Ever heard the saying, "Everything's bigger in Texas"? They were talking about Houston.

Houston Travel Guide

Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.

travel planner houston

Whatever you're looking for, Houston's got it.

America's fourth-largest city, Houston is a fast-growing melting pot of cultures. It's home to several professional sports teams, a world class zoo, a top-notch symphony, and the Houston Rodeo. Beaches are just a short drive away.

The Houston metropolitan area is home to nearly seven million people. More than 20% of the population was born abroad, giving the city a rich cultural tapestry that spans religions, languages, and cuisines. Houston has significant Indian, Vietnamese, Chinese, African, and Hispanic populations.

Want to watch professional basketball? Catch a Houston Rockets game. Prefer football? The Houston Texans have you covered. Baseball more your speed? Plan your trip around a Houston Astros game.

For a real Texas treat, check out the Houston Rodeo , the largest livestock exhibition and rodeo in the world. Millions of people visit the 20-day event each year. Performers including Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Kiss, Taylor Swift, even Elvis Presley have taken the stage at the Houston Rodeo.

Don't miss a chance to visit the Johnson Space Center, which serves as Mission Control for American space missions and welcomes visitors to explore the artifacts of American space exploration. Afterwards, walk along the beach in nearby Galveston.

One thing's for sure, you'll find plenty of things to do — and eat — in Houston.

Central Standard Time. (Daylight Savings Time is observed seasonally)

Best Time to Go

Summers may swelter, but winters are mild, making Houston an excellent escape from freezing temperatures elsewhere. The first several months of the year are the best time to visit Houston. Basketball season is in full swing. Mild temperatures make a January marathon bearable. February brings Lunar New Year and Mardi Gras celebrations as well as the start of the Houston Rodeo, a weeks-long event that draws top recording artists to the city. March brings the Bayou Regatta, Texas' largest canoe and kayak race. April offers a chance to see creatively decked out cars at the city's annual Art Car Parade while May brings the Houston Dragon Boat Festival. For football fans, September through November offer bearable temperatures and the chance to see the Houston Texans in action.

Things to Know

Houston summers are hot and sticky. Temperatures in the 90s and 100s aren't uncommon. If you must visit during the summer, don't forget the sunscreen and do carry a water bottle.

Houston is a sprawling city that covers more than 637 square miles. Houston traffic is among the worst in the U.S. While public transit has improved in recent years, you'll still need a car to get most places.

Houston is pronounced differently in Texas than it is in New York.

How to Get Around

Trains : Houston's METRORail system covers downtown, midtown, the Museum District, and the Texas Medical District. Routes are limited, but the rail system does make it possible to get to baseball games and the rodeo for just $1.25 a ride.

Buses : Houston bus services run on a series of color-coded networks. Routes are limited, but buses run between 14 and 18 hours a day with rides priced at $1.25 each.

Taxis : Several taxi companies operate in Houston with meter rates at $2.75 for the first 1/11 mile. Riders over the age of 60 receive a 5% discount.

Rideshare : Both Uber and Lyft operate in Houston.

As the sun falls over Houston, there’s no need to depart Hermann Park for greener pastures. The urban park puts on events throughout the year that keep the fun going well into the evening.

The best example can be found at the park’s Miller Outdoor Theatre .

At the park’s northern end, the theater has a  packed calendar  of live performances, from plays to concerts. It makes for a romantic (and family-friendly) evening for all who visit Houston.

Also within Hermann Park, the Houston Zoo also runs nighttime  events  that allow you to explore the zoo under the stars, or even take part in a silent disco!

True night owls excited to experience the local nightlife will want to make their way to Downtown Houston. It offers the full gamut from happening sports bars, Texan honky tonks, and nightclubs.

Captian Foxheart’s Bad News Bar has a charming difference that makes a night here the most memorable. Sample their delightful cocktail menu and the eye-catching decor before making your way to the rooftop to enjoy great views across the city skyline.

Houston Hermann Park

Day 2 in Houston

Day 2 on your Houston itinerary sees you venture into the city’s biggest park, explore the Museum District, and hit up a live ball game!

As your time in Hermann Park will have shown you, Houston has no shortage of green space to enjoy.

Its many urban oases provide a wonderful escape from the United States’ fourth biggest city, allowing for a blissful time among the urban sprawl.

To begin the second day of your weekend in Houston, make your way to the best urban space in the city, Buffalo Bayou Park . Under the inevitable Houston sunshine, find yourself a spacious spot among the rolling lawns that stretch along the Buffalo Bayou stream.

Once you’ve taken in the sights and sounds and enjoyed your morning coffee, jump on one of the walking and cycling trails to explore the 160-acre park.

Aside from excellent city views, dog runs, and playgrounds, Buffalo Bayou Park is known for its public arts. It puts the space at the forefront of not just leisure, but the local arts culture.

The highlight of this is the park’s famous Cistern. This was developed in the 1920s and is an underground reservoir that provided water for residents. Now, it hosts art installations both temporary and permanent. There are also  tours  you can take of the historic piece of engineering.

But if the sun is really beating down, get out on the water for a paddle. At the Lake Lost Visitor Center, you can grab a paddle and jump onboard a SUP or kayak.

Exploring more of Texas? Check out this list of the best things to do in Austin .

After an eventful morning exploring Buffalo Bayou Park, get some respite from the Texan sun and make your way into Houston’s fantastic Museum District .

Some of the top attractions in the Museum District include the Menil Collection , the Houston Museum of Natural Science , and the Contemporary Arts Museum .

But those that love their art can’t pass up a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston .

Covering two buildings with an additional sculpture garden, the museum boasts 6,000 worth of creative history with over 60,000 impressive works of art.

In Downtown Houston, a baseball game at Minute Maid Park is a great way to start your second evening in Houston.

From March to October, the Houston Astros swing for the fences in front of an adoring home crowd and plenty of opposing supporters. The retractable roof ensures that the game is always fun and comfortable to watch.

You won’t have to worry about the rain coming down, or the sun being too much. Simply kick back with a hot dog (and a tall boy) and watch the action unfold.

Speaking of sports, you can catch the NBA’s Houston Rockets play at the Toyota Center and the NFL’s Houston Texans at NRG Stadium.

Day 3 in Houston

Your weekend in Houston is quickly wrapping up. But don’t worry, we have much more to see. Today, discover parks, underground tunnels, historic beach towns, and a man-made waterfall.

In Downtown Houston, Discovery Green is  the  place to start the final day on your Houston itinerary. It’s another example of Houston effortlessly blending nature into its urban sprawl, providing a lively spot to enjoy your morning coffee as the city slowly wakes up.

Discovery Green spans 12 acres and in the early hours, you’ll find groups of residents enjoying yoga classes or admiring the many sculptures strewn around the greenery.

Other common events include reading sessions for the little ones. There is also an ice skating rink in the winter months.

A great alternative is the Market Square Park , which first opened when Houston was founded in 1836. Here, you’ll find patios set around the small park, the famous Buster statue and a horde of surrounding cafes and restaurants.

As the sun ascends higher into the sky, escape the heat by exploring Houston’s fascinating Underground Tunnel . It once connected two movie theaters but now it stretches for 6 miles of air-conditioned tunnel.

Places to stop on your subterranean adventure include the large underground food hall and the intriguing lower story in the Bank of America Building. Book a guided tour of the Underground Tunnel if you’d rather have a local show you around!

They say it’s best to travel like a local. So if that’s the case, then enjoy the hour drive to Galveston Island !

Galveston Island is Houston’s go-to beach destination. The island itself is just shy of 30 miles long and is enveloped in golden beaches, historic piers, plenty of shopping and sunshine.

The barrier island has a fantastic story. One that you can read with a stroll through the East End Historic District, past historic mansions from the 1800s, old-time cafes, and boutique galleries that hold the key to the past. Among them, leafy trees paint the streets.

You’ll find even more history and even better shopping in the Strand , a National Historic Landmark District. Aside from the on-point aesthetics, you’ll discover a vibrant neighborhood and the impressive Grand 1894 Opera House.

But yes, you haven’t escaped the city just to see old buildings. Galveston Island is what it is because of its powdery white sand.

Venture down to the Seawall for some time on Stewart Beach . With lifeguards watching on, trade the warm sands for the balmy waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Travelers will be able to rent beach chairs and umbrellas. You’ll also have easy access to several concession stands slinging your favorite beach treats and beverages. Finish off by checking out Galveston’s answer to the Santa Monica Pier, the Historic Pleasure Pier .

Don’t have a rental car? Check out this  day trip  to Galveston Island, departing from Houston.

After returning to the Space City, take some time to reflect on your 3 days in Houston with a visit to the mesmerizing Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park .

In a city of impressive art and public installations, the grandeur of this attraction still manages to stand out. Lay down a picnic blanket on the park’s surrounded lawns and gaze upon the man-made waterfall.

The Waterwall is a semi-circle structure standing at 64 feet tall. Every minute, 11,000 gallons of water trickles down, creating a glistening sight and gentle sound. Add on the 200 towering oak trees in the park, and you have a stunning sight that is the best place to reflect on the previous 72 hours.

As the sun begins to set, admire the ever-changing colors before exploring what nighttime in Uptown Houston has to offer. In keeping with the laid-back vibe, you’ll find plenty of chill bars, like Muldoon’s the Patio, which serves up excellently potent cocktails.

If you want to go out with a bang, head to the West End where you’ll find regular themed nights like karaoke, with DJs and live music on the weekend.

Houston Travel Guide

Now that you know what to do in Houston, here is some information that will help you know the best time to visit, how to get around and where to stay.

The best time to visit Houston is in the spring. As you’ve seen, Space City has some wonderful urban parks, and as the temperatures warm the city’s flora bursts into life. With leafy trees and blooming azaleas, it’s a vibrant time to be in Houston.

To add to the case of spring travel, the Texas Livestock Show and Rodeo occurs annually in March. Sure, you may not be into rodeos, but the enthralling carnival is as good as any with heart-stopping rides and plenty of big, boisterous Texan culture.

Given Houston’s position on the map, it’s no surprise the city gets  hot  in summer. But if that’s the time you prefer to travel, then you’ll still have much to look forward to.

Many of the city’s top attractions are indoors, while the tunnels help you explore and Galveston Island is only an hour away.

With the fourth biggest population of any American city, it’s easy to say that Houston is a  big  city. But unlike New York, for example, it’s not well set up for public transport.

Depending on where you stay, you may wish to hire a car in order to explore the attractions on the edges of town.

However, you can avoid a multi-day car hire by staying in Downtown Houston. There is a light rail system that runs through downtown and the Museum District. But you are more likely to find your next attraction within walking distance.

The best way to get around is to rent a car and explore on your own! We recommend Rental Cars , which has the largest range of vehicles for the best value on the market.

Where to Stay in Houston

Because of the light rail system, the best place to stay in Houston is downtown. Not only will you have sports stadiums, attractions, and parks within walking distance, but you can jump on the rail to visit the Museum District.

Uptown and Galleria are other options, with Galleria having some budget-friendly accommodation. However, you’ll want to hire a car.

If you’re wondering where to stay in the city, our recommendations for the best accommodation in Houston will help you choose the top spot for your budget!

Houston is Texas’ largest city and attracts hordes of travelers every year. However, the vast majority of these visitors travel to Houston on business. Relatively few travelers see Houston as a vacation destination on par with other top Texas tourist spots. But, believe it or not, Houston has much more to offer visitors than most people realize.

Houston actually is home to some of Texas’ most popular attractions. The Johnson Space Center was at the center of the space race during the 1960s and is still active in space exploration. Of course, the San Jacinto Monument marks the very spot where Texas won it’s independence from Mexico and is a must-see for history buffs. Adjacent to the San Jacinto Monument is the Battleship Texas, which fought to maintain America’s freedom during WWII.

The Houston Zoo has long been a favorite stop for Houston area residents and visitors alike. More recently, the Downtown Aquarium has also drawn a lot of attention from visitors. Houston also boasts an impressive array of museums , including the Buffalo Soldier Museum, the Holocaust Museum, Museum of Natural Science, Museum of Fine Arts, and many, many more.

Sports fans also have plenty to cheer about while in Houston, regardless of the season. The University of Houston and Rice University each field a full complement of men’s and women’s NCAA Div. I athletic teams. And, Reliant Stadium is home to the Houston Bowl, a DI college football bowl game. On the pro level, the NBA Rockets, NFL Texans, and MLB Astros all call Houston home.

Houston is also a popular stop for shoppers. From the upscale Galleria in the heart of the city to the sprawling Katy Mills Mall on the outskirts of town, Houston is home to thousands of retailers.

When it comes to dining, Houston offers some of the best – and most diverse – restaurants in the nation. From seafood to steaks, Tex-Mex to Indian, Houston has an eatery with virtually any and every style of food.

Throughout the year, Houston also hosts a number of festivals and events. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is by far the biggest of these annual events and draws hundreds of thousands each year. Houston is also home to the Houston International Festival, Houston Hot Sauce Festival, and many, many more.

So, whether it is business or pleasure that brings you to Houston, finding plenty to do won’t be a problem. In fact, you’ll probably find you don’t have nearly enough time to squeeze in everything.

3 Perfect Days in Houston: A Complete Itinerary

Houston-Hermann-Park-05780

If you have 3 days in Houston, you can check out the city’s best attractions, explore its top restaurants, and even add some time to shop to your itinerary.

As a big metropolis and one of the biggest cities in Texas, Houston is ever-changing. Therefore, there is always something new to see or do. However, there are a few classic things that you should plan on visiting while here.

If you have from Friday to Sunday or a long weekend, you have the perfect amount of time to see the best of Houston.

This post has a 3-day itinerary to Houston, so you can enjoy a few days away from the office, travel on a long weekend, or experience the best of the city.

Table of contents

Houston citypass, the best hotels in houston, getting around houston, houston itinerary day 1 – downtown, houston itinerary day 2 – museum district and galleria, houston itinerary day 3 – space center.

This post may contain affiliate links. By purchasing through these links, I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you.

Tips for Visiting Houston

To explore the best of Houston, you should purchase the  Houston CityPass . By purchasing the pass for US$ 64, you can save up to 47% on some of Houston’s top attractions.

When you purchase the  Houston CityPass , you can visit 5 of the top places to visit in Houston, including the Space Center Houston, Downtown Aquarium, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Houston Zoo  OR  Museum of Fine Arts, and Houston Kemah Boardwalk  OR  Children’s Museum Houston.

Houston Downtown skyline

  • Marriot Marquis Houston – A great option of a hotel in Downtown Houston and a perfect place to stay near Minute Made Park, the Convention Center, and the Theater District – a few main places to visit in the city. This well-located hotel also has the world’s largest Texas-shaped rooftop lazy river.
  • The Post Oak Hotel – This hotel is in the Galleria area, where you’ll have access to a wide offer of malls and some of the best restaurants in Houston.
  • Hotel Zaza Museum District – A perfect hotel if you’re planning on exploring the museums of Houston and walking around Herman Park, one of the best parks in the city.
  • Hilton Nasa Clear Lake – This hotel is located only 5 minutes away from the Space Center Houston, giving you the flexibility to explore the nearby attraction without the need for a long commute.
  • La Colombe d’Or – A boutique hotel set in a 1920s mansion, located in the trendy Montrose neighborhood, close to many cafés and shops. You’ll also be relatively close to Downtown and the Museum District, and the top attractions of Houston.

The best way to get around Houston is with a car. If you’re not from the area, you can  rent a car   at the airport and use it to explore the city. For a big city, parking is relatively easy, making a car a convenient way to get around.

I personally use and recommend  RentalCars  for my trips as it allows me to choose the best price amongst the top car rental companies.

If you don’t want to drive, you can also use the ride-sharing services available in the city, like Uber, Lyft, and the local Alto.

And if you prefer to use the public transportation system, you can rely on  METRO ; though it isn’t available throughout the entire city, it’s a good way to explore the main tourist path – Downtown, Museum District, and other areas.

On the first day of your itinerary, it’s time to see the best of Downtown Houston. Start by going for a stroll at Discovery Green , a lovely park near George R. Brown Convention Center that is one of the best parks in the city.

After a walk around Discovery Green, head over to Downtown Aquarium , one of Houston’s top things to do. Spend some time checking out the 200 species and special exhibits. You can also go up 100 feet at the Diving Bell Ferris Wheel to look over Downtown.

Another highlight of Downtown is POST Houston , a newish cultural development with more than 20 food stalls and a communal seating dining style. Have a quick bite to eat at one of the vendors, and then go up to the outdoor terrace for stunning views of Downtown Houston.

In the afternoon, make your way to Buffalo Bayou Park for some time outdoors, soak in the green area, and have a picture-perfect perspective of Downtown’s skyline. Sunset is a great time to be at the park, and you can also see the bats flying away as a large group from Waugh Drive Bridge.

For dinner, visit the famous Xochi , a Mexican restaurant with Oaxacan dishes that is one of the best restaurants in Downtown Houston (at Marriot Marquis ). Or, if you prefer something more low-key, head over to Frank’s Pizza for delicious New York-style pizzas, where you can buy them as a whole pie or by the slice.

For the second day of your itinerary, get ready to see some of Houston’s hot spots and try the famous Texas BBQ.

Start your day by heading over to the Museum District . There are many attractions here, but the Museum of Natural Science and the Houston Zoo are the top ones. Both places are excellent for family fun, and they are both included on the Houston CityPass .

The Museum of Natural Science has amazing permanent exhibits. The highlights are the Cullen Hall of Gems and Minerals, packed with stunning gemstones; the Cabinet of Curiosities, where you see and touch the objects displayed; and the Morian Hall of Paleontology, with many dinosaur fossils that are especially attractive for kids.

Pedal boats at Hermann Park

And the zoo is another unique place to go in Houston with kids. They have many animals (including flamingos!), a wildlife carousel, and the Animal Encounters program where the little ones can meet some animals.

When it’s lunchtime, go to either Truth BBQ, Pit Room, or Pinkerton’s for a classic Texas BBQ in a friendly, informal setting. Be prepared to wait a little bit in line to order their delicious brisket, sausage, and pulled pork.

In the afternoon, go to the Galleria area and spend some time at the Galleria Mall, the largest in Texas, to shop in its department stores and designer boutiques. Or pay a visit to the River Oaks District for your dose of high-end designer goods – think Hermès, Dior, and Cartier. You can also go to Highland Village for stores like Anthropologie, J. Crew, and Sephora.

At night, finish the second day of your Houston itinerary with a dinner at Hugo’s – a restaurant for a tasty Mexican dinner. Everything on the menu is delicious, the margaritas are superb, and you can even try eating grasshopper!

Now for your third and last day in Houston, your itinerary will start with a brunch. Choose between the best brunches in Houston, such as Tiny’s Boxwoods, Hungry’s, Bosscat Kitchen & Libations, and Snooze.

After brunch, it’s time to visit Houston’s top attraction – the Space Center. Plan on spending some time here immersing yourself into the universe of space exploration and NASA’s world. And don’t forget to add some time to see the exterior area where the Independence Plaza and Space Shuttle Independence are. You can purchase tickets to the Space Center Houston online or use your Houston CityPass .

Following the Houston Space Center, finish your day at Saint Arnold Brewery, the top brewery to visit in the city. They have a beer garden and an indoor area with chapels painted by local artists.

At night, finish your 3-day itinerary by treating yourself to a special dinner in Houston. For Japanese food, the go-to are Kata Robata, Uchi, and Uptown Sushi. If you’re craving Italian, you can’t go wrong with Coppa Osteria, Lulu’s, or Giacomo’s Cibo e Vino (a neighborhood favorite). Perry’s, B&B Butchers, and Taste of Texas are excellent choices if you’re more of a steak person. Other superb alternatives are Le Colonial, Traveler’s Table, Flora, Marmo, and Brasserie 19.

What is Houston known for?

The most famous attraction in Houston is the Space Center. However, the city is also renowned for its diversity, which is reflected in its many restaurants. So, Houston is also known for its energetic culinary scene.

Is Houston worth visiting?

Definitely! Houston is perfect for a long weekend getaway, and with 3 days in the city, you can see its top attractions, shop, and enjoy the wonderful dining life.

Insider's guide to houston.

In its 180-year history, the city founded near the banks of the Buffalo Bayou has grown from the capitol of the Republic (1837 to 1840) to the fourth-largest city in the nation. What began with 6,642 acres has expanded into nearly 600 square miles, bringing with it a rich history that’s jam-packed with interesting facts, must-see sites and experiences to enjoy.

Interested in staying in the know? Take our short course and get on the Houston Insider  list for invites to sneak previews, exclusive events and experiences. It’s the best way to stay up to date on the latest and greatest offerings in the city.

houston zoo giraffe

Animal House

Love seeing the giraffes at the zoo? Don’t miss a chance to feed the whole giraffe family in the Houston Zoo’s African Forest. For $7, guests get the chance to help serve up crunchy lettuce snacks to the giraffes, zebras and ostriches during daily feedings at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Bat Country

See Texas’ second-largest urban bat colony on its nightly exodus from beneath Montrose’s Waugh Drive Bridge between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive. A quarter-million Mexican free-tailed bats call the bridge home and emerge around sunset, nightly, over Buffalo Bayou. For the best vantage point, grab a spot on the platform just southeast of the bridge.

Beyond the Grave

Situated on 84 acres along the Washington Corridor, Glenwood Cemetery serves as a serene resting place for some of Houston’s most iconic residents. Although we aren’t going to suggest parking it there for an afternoon picnic, it is definitely a solid destination for a shade-filled stroll. Keep an eye out for the ornate headstones of more than 20 mayors, past governors, oil tycoons, even Howard Hughes.

Garden State

The former John Staub-designed home of Houston philanthropist Ima Hogg now serves as the Museum of Fine Arts’ Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens , housing early American decorative arts and painting collections. Outside, the property’s 14 lush acres are considered the largest organic historic public garden in the state of Texas and provide a perfect escape on a nice Houston afternoon.

On the Record

Empire Records meets H-Town at Upper Kirby’s vinyl emporium, Cactus Music . The old-school record store stocks new and used CDs, but the real appeal here is the vinyl, which can be test-driven prior to purchase on Cactus’ dual turntables. Even better, the indie-shop also hosts in-store performances from local bands, complete with free Saint Arnold’s beer.

A-maze-ing Objects

It took more than 20 years for Houston postman Jeff McKissack to finish his maze-like Orange Show Monument . Made using concrete, brick, steel and anything else he could find, McKissack created a series of walkway mazes, balconies, arenas and exhibits inside an East End lot. When he died in 1980, the future of the project was uncertain, until a non-profit set out to preserve the structure. Together, 21 original donors—including Dominique de Menil and members of ZZ Top—helped pool enough money to restore and reopen the site for tours and special events.

Setting the Stage

Forget the tacky carpet, life-size Miley Cyrus cutouts and stadium seating at most modern cinemas, Landmark River Oaks Theatre plays by its own rules. This historic institution is known for its stunning art-deco interior, indie-film repertoire and second-level bar and lounge. It’s also the only theater in Houston with a weekly midnight series, such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, shown on the second Saturday of every month.

Interior of the Houstonian Hotel

Staying Power

For more than a decade the Galleria-area Houstonian Hotel served as the formal residence of President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, while he served as vice president and president (1981-1992). Although they slept in The Manor House before it became the hotel’s signature restaurant, the Bush family later moved to room 271 so the Secret Service could room above and below. Today, guests can reserve the two-bedroom suite and experience La Dolce Vita, at least for the night.

Sole Survivor

Visitors who arrive in Houston sans the oh-so-essential pair of cowboy boots should stop by Westheimer’s Tejas Boots for a custom pair designed by Jose Gonzales. The local institution has been outfitting presidents, governors and athletes for more than 25 years. Sure, a pair will set you back around $1,000, but can you really put a price on the happiness that a perfectly-crafted set of black alligator boots will bring? Check out Tejas’ other products including belts, buckles, shoes, skins, bags and wallets.

Buy and Buy

Take one step inside Chinatown’s Hong Kong City Mall and it’s easy to forget that you’re still in Texas. More than 20 restaurants and cafes, along with a multitude of shops fill the center, including mall anchor Hong Kong Food Market. The grocery store is filled with a mind-boggling assortment of odd produce, seafood (anyway you like it), pungent durian, even an entire frozen food aisle dedicated to fake meat. If you’re still hungry afterwards, venture over to the west wing of the mall for all-star dim sum at Ocean Palace.

Shot Collar

Houston’s oldest family-owned biz, Hamilton Shirts , is still cranking out its bespoke button downs the same way it did in 1883, with hand-cut paper patterns and hand-stitched details. More than 700 seasonal fabrics—used in creating the company’s famous made-to-measure and ready-to-wear shirts—are stocked at Hamilton’s Richmond Avenue-based homebase. You'll find celebrities like Daniel Radcliffe, Lyle Lovett, James Franco, Neil Patrick Harris, Robert Duvall, and more sporting Hamilton-tailored shirts.

Right of Passage

Looking for Downtown’s professional set during the week? Forget about finding them at the crosswalks—the real action is 20-feet below, in the 7.5-mile-long tunnel system. The series of subterranean passages allows the district’s 150,000-employee workforce to take on tasks—doctors appointments, banking, shopping, post office and salons, among other things—in air-conditioned bliss. Access the network via street-level stairs, escalators, office-building elevators or head to Wells Fargo Plaza, which offers direct street-to-tunnel access.

Underground

The Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern , a structure reminiscent of the ancient Roman cisterns in Istanbul, is a cavernous, 87,500-square-foot-space featuring more than 200 slender, 25-foot high concrete columns. BBP re-discovered the Cistern in 2010 when it was developing the $58-million Buffalo Bayou Park project, a 160-acre site west of downtown Houston. Recognizing the historical and architectural significance of the highly unusual space, BBP took a bold step to repurpose the Cistern into a magnificent public space that would house an ambitious program of changing art installations.

Go ahead. For once, we’re giving you permission to press the red button. Seriously. We won’t tell you what happens, since it’s best experienced first-hand, but venture behind downtown’s Wortham Theater —where Preston Street crosses Buffalo Bayou—and look for the non-descript red button, inset in the staircase, that leads down to the water. You can thank us later.

Explore Houston from below—on a kayaking or pontoon adventure along Buffalo Bayou . Beginning at the Shepherd Street Bridge, paddlers travel to Allen’s Landing and eventually wrap up near the Theater District. Along the way, spot blue herons, loggerhead turtles and an occasional alligator sunning itself along bayou banks.

Neighborhood Watch

In 1993, artist and activist Rick Lowe helped launch the neighborhood non-profit, Project Row Houses , in Houston’s Third Ward. What started with 22 shotgun-style houses has grown to 40 properties, spread out over six blocks. The mixed-use spaces have helped transform the community, creating a positive respite for art exhibitions, residency spaces, houses for young mothers, office spaces and low-income residential and commercial spaces.

Houston History

The Houston Museum of African American Culture is dedicated to telling the story of Africans and African Americans in Houston and beyond. Located inside the Houston Museum District, HMAAC offers dynamic programming, lectures and exhibitions that involve people of color. There are also film series, educational classes and even worship services at the campus on Caroline Street.

Parks and Restoration

Downtown’s 20-acre Sam Houston Park opened more than a century ago and remains a proud oasis of living history in the city. The park mixes the great outdoors and museum spaces, which are open to the public. Visitors can also tour historical houses restored by the Heritage Society. Sam Houston Park is open from dusk to dawn, daily, and admission is free.

2 Days in Houston (Things to do, the best food, & more!)

Last updated on May 29th, 2024

Spending 2 days in Houston? Here’s our detailed Houston itinerary with everything you need to know about visiting Houston, where to stay, what to eat, and the best things to do!

Although Austin is where we called home together, for the first 18 years of Adam’s life, he called the Houston area home. Between Adam’s family and Kathryn’s best friend’s family living in Houston, we have spent a lot of time together in Houston, but until recently, we hadn’t spent much time actually exploring the city.

Throughout the last few years, whenever we would go to Houston to visit family and friends, we have made it a priority to spend at least a day exploring around town, from the top sights to the best food. Adam is a very proud Houstonian and a diehard Houston sports fan, so it has been extremely fun for us to explore the city together and see his favorite spots from his childhood, as well as new spots that have popped up in the last few years.  We’ve created this 2 days in Houston guide with our many years of experience exploring the city.

We’re excited to share a 2 days in Houston itinerary and guide to help you learn more about Houston, where to stay, what to eat, and the best things to do! Have more than 2 days in Houston? Make sure to check out the “if you have extra time” section for more awesome things to do in Houston, including a couple day trip ideas.

About Houston

Houston Skyline

Houston is home to six professional sports teams, is one of the major locations for NASA (giving it the nickname Space City), and is a huge hub for both the oil and gas industry. And despite being a huge metropolitan area, it has the largest total area of parks and green space out of the most populous 10 cities in the US and is in close proximity to the ocean. A few other fun facts:

  • Houston is said to be the air conditioning capital of the world!
  • Houston is a foodie city and Houstonians eat out more than in any other major city in the US.
  • Houston has “a Theater District second only to New York City in terms of a concentration of seats (more than 12,000) in a single (17-block) geographic area.”
  • Famous local resident Mattress Mack’s Gallery Furniture reportedly sells more furniture per square foot than any store in the world.

If you’re looking for a combination of city life, delicious food, professional sports, parks, museums, and the beach, then 2 days in Houston is what you need!

When to visit Houston

Our biggest advice for spending 2 days in Houston: don’t visit during the summer! Well, if you have to, it’ll still be fun, but be prepared for lots of heat and humidity! Houston, similar to the rest of Texas, can get very, very warm in the summer months (with some days over 100ºF). But the big difference between Houston and other cities in Texas is how humid it can be. We’ll never forget driving to Houston for the 4th of July one year and having our phone and sunglasses fog up as soon as we left the car. It sometimes feels like a sauna!

Houston Weather Graph

While summers can be very warm and humid in Houston, the rest of the year is pretty nice! Winters in Houston are pretty mild, with temperatures rarely below freezing. We just spent Christmas in Houston and had short sleeves and tank tops on most days! It’s not uncommon for it to be very warm one day and then freezing the next though, so make sure to bring layers if visiting in the colder months. 🙂

One thing that is very good to know about Houston is that It can rain pretty hard, sometimes causing some pretty big flooding. In fact, Houston gets more inches of rain per year than Seattle! And since Houston is located near the Gulf of Mexico, hurricanes can be a big threat to the city, so if you’re visiting during hurricane season (June through November), make sure to keep an eye on any tropical storms or hurricanes!

Getting to Houston

2 Days in Houston

There are two major airports in Houston, both the Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) .

IAH is located north of Houston and Hobby is located south of the city, but both are about 20-30 minutes to the city center depending on traffic. IAH is a great international airport, with many flights coming and going to destinations all over the world, while Hobby is a great airport for more domestic destinations and airlines, like Southwest Airlines. And then you’ll probably want to rent a car .

If you’re starting your 2 days in Houston adventure from somewhere else in Texas, then here’s what your estimated driving time would be:

  • From Austin : 2.5-3 hours
  • From Dallas: 3.5-4 hours
  • From San Antonio: 2 hours, 40 mins-5 hours

Getting around Houston

2 Days in Houston

We’d highly suggest renting a car to get around Houston, which on average costs $35/day. While there are buses and a metrorail to get around, they may not reach everywhere you want to go and may take a bit longer to get around. Uber and Lyft are also good options, especially if you’re planning on drinking, but they can get expensive very fast.

If you plan to just stick around the area you are staying in, Uber and Lyft would be your best bet, but if you want to explore the entire city (which is very large!) and do everything on this guide, renting a car would be most cost effective. During our most recent day trip around Houston, we paid between $5-10 for parking the whole day. While this may vary depending on when and where you go, it still is relatively affordable for 2 days in Houston.

Where to Stay in Houston

Houston Murals

As we mentioned before, Houston is a huge city! While the city as a whole isn’t super walkable, there are lots of little neighborhoods in Houston that are walkable, have lots of restaurants and shops, and their own character.

Here are some of our favorite neighborhoods in Houston and some suggestions of where to stay in each! As always, our top suggestion is to stay in a vacation rental to get a more local feel, especially since many of these areas don’t have any hotels.

Curious how we get FREE flights and hotels? Check out our list of our favorite travel cards that have saved us thousands of dollars!

  • Tacos Tierra Caliente : This is another cash only spot, but supposed to be awesome!
  • Tacos a Go Go : We hear their breakfast tacos are especially good, which they serve all day! Woo!
  • Liberty Taco : This spot is kind of like a Torchy’s (our fav!), but local to Houston! The tacos are a bit less traditional and more unique.

  • While you’re at Buffalo Bayou Park, go on a Cistern Tour ! The Cistern is a former drinking water reservoir built in 1926 that after decades of being used, was discovered to have an irreparable leak and has now become a public space housing art installations. It’s 87,500 square feet and holds 15 million gallons of water when functioning at capacity! The tours range from 15 minutes-1 hour long depending on both the type of tour and the day of the week. • Grab coffee at Retrospect Coffee Bar , an awesome coffee shop with a lot of history! This coffee shop is in the building of one of Houston’s first gas stations and Houston’s first “Kelvinator,” which was a gas station that also served cold beverages. You can learn more about the history here !
  • Admire the Cloud Column . This is a mirror sculpture similar to the Bean (Cloud Gate) in Chicago!

  • Visit a museum! Houston is home to over 150 museums, but a couple popular ones are the Houston Museum of Natural Science and The Museum of Fine Arts . The Children’s Museum of Houston is also popular for kiddos! All of these museums have specific free hours on Thursdays if you are visiting on a Thursday and want a fun free activity.
  • Truth BBQ (Closed Mondays): This spot was rated #3 in all of Texas by Texas Monthly in 2021 and WOW, it is SO good! Their brisket is phenomenal, as are the ribs and sausage, plus they make killer sides (get the tater tot casserole, corn pudding, and creamed spinach). We hear their cakes are amazing too!
  • The Pit Room : We love their brisket, beef ribs, homemade sausage, and their homemade tortillas!
  • Pinkerton’s BBQ (Closed Mondays & Tuesdays)
  • The Graffiti Park ! This is a really cool block of buildings covered in graffiti and murals! We were super impressed by the artwork and it makes for an amazing spot to snap some photos.

  • $$- JINYA Ramen Bar : a very popular ramen restaurant!

Hi Gjana! You’re so welcome! We’re glad you found it helpful 🙂

Thanks for the great information! My husband and I are traveling to Houston next March on a little weekend get-away. We haven’t booked a hotel yet but after reading this we might actually go with an Airbnb. You shared so many great ideas! I think we’ll follow your itinerary pretty closely, because it all seems very fun. Hopefully the weather’s decent when we go! Thanks again.

We are so glad this was helpful! An Airbnb in Houston would be such a fun way to see the city and feel more like a local. We’ll be crossing our fingers that the weather is good for you!

I recently moved back to Houston and given me so many options to explore so that I can approach Houston like it’s my first time living here. So many fun places to eat I haven’t been to yet. Awesome post.

Yay! We are so happy to hear that! We love playing tourist in our own town 😀 Have a blast being back in TX!

The interior of the Painted Churches of Texas, one of the most hidden gem day trips from Houston

The  Painted Churches of Texas  are these charming little churches scattered around rural Texas, famous for their exquisitely painted interiors. Some of these churches have been around since the late 1800s and early 1900s. I’ve gone to three of them, and each one was wildly different. I even joined a church group and sang hymns with them.

From the outside, they might just look like any old small-town church. But once you step inside, you’re in for a treat. The stained glass windows are decked out with detailed paintings that remind you of fancy Easter eggs, but way bigger.

Every piece of decor is hand-painted with crazy detail, using techniques like stenciling and marbling. You could check out a bunch of these churches in one day, though keep in mind some are only open at certain times or if you make an appointment.

You can go fishing, boating, or crabbing on the lake or take a swamp tour to see alligators and other wildlife up close.

But what you’re really here for is probably the many casinos in town for some gambling and entertainment. And, of course, since you’re here, you have to eat some authentic Cajun cuisine!

Lady Bird Lake in Austin Texas

Distance:  ~165 miles/2 hours and 35 minutes Type:  Urban & Foodie Adventures Best Time to Go to Austin:  Spring or Fall

Definitely a spot perfect for weekend getaways, Austin pleasantly surprised me! I’ve revisited three times now, staying 2 weeks to a month each time. Having a close friend who just became a homeowner makes staying a lot easier.

As the capital of Texas, Austin is a young city with killer entertainment, a large music scene, and seriously good eats like Terry Black’s BBQ. Take a walk down South Congress Avenue for street art, quirky shops, and awesome food trucks. Catch the sight of bats flying out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge at sunset – it’s a summer must-see.

Make sure to hit up Ladybird Lake for some paddleboarding, catch some live tunes on Sixth Street (aka Dirty Six), and don’t forget the epic music festivals like SXSW and Austin City Limits happening all year round.

Why consider Waco for your next trip? Well, firstly, it’s home to the famous Magnolia Market at the Silos, founded by the innovative Chip and Joanna Gaines from HGTV’s “Fixer Upper.” This place combines shopping, dining, and relaxation in a beautifully landscaped rustic setting with some of the best food trucks around.

Check out the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum or the cool Dr. Pepper Museum. Swing by the Cameron Park Zoo to see some exotic animals, or take a peek at the Waco Mammoth National Monument for an awesome look at ancient mammoth bones.

With its expansive 100-mile coastline, options abound from North Beach to Padre Island National Seashore and Mustang Island State Park.

Other than beaches, dive into history at the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay or marvel at marine life in the Texas State Aquarium. For nature enthusiasts, Padre Island National Seashore has wildlife adventures, while the Corpus Christi Bay Trail presents endless bike routes.

Distance:  ~190 miles/3 hours Type:  Cave Exploration Best Time to Go : Year-round

Before closing in on San Antonio , explore the Natural Bridge Caverns, a vast cave network. Delve 180 feet underground to discover massive chambers and stunning formations.

They’ve got everything from chill walking tours to more adventurous expeditions. And if you’re into outdoor stuff, there are aerial ropes, zip lines, and even a spot to mine for fossils. Also, don’t miss their Christmas at the Caverns event if you’re around during the holidays.

Oh, and while you’re there, swing by the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch for a safari adventure without leaving your car.

19. San Antonio

San Antonio, Texas, USA cityscape at the River Walk.

Distance:  ~200 miles/3 hours  Type:  Historical & Family Fun Best Time to Go to San Antonio : Fall and spring

If you’ve ever heard of the Alamo from middle school US History, it’s  must-visit stop in San Antonio . Aside from learning about the Texas Revolution, the River Walk is super popular with both tourists and locals. It’s an entire scenic waterway loop, surrounded by places to eat, shop, and have fun. You can even hop on a riverboat and take a 35-minute guided tour.

The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is a must-visit, with four Spanish frontier missions dating back to the early 1700s. Take part in tours and cultural events, or bike along lovely trails connecting all four missions.

Houston Day Trips: Less than 4 Hours

20. dallas/fort worth.

view of Downtown Dallas on a one day itinerary

Distance:  ~245 miles/3 hrs and 40 minutes  Type:  Urban Best Time to Go to Dallas:  Year-round

Blending Old West nostalgia with urban flair, a trip to Dallas /Fort Worth is synonymous with cowboy boots and rodeos. The Stockyards National Historic District embodies cowboy culture, featuring cattle drives and Western saloons. Otherwise, do the two-step at Billy Bob’s Texas, the world’s largest honky-tonk.

If you’re into history or art, you’re gonna love it here. The Museum District has some amazing art, including Monet and Picasso, and it’s free to get in (bonus). Take a stroll through the trendy Bishop Arts District or visit the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza to learn about the JFK assassination.

Nearby Fort Worth is another day trip  to potentially add to the Dallas road trip itinerary.  You could easily spend a full day in each city, but it’s doable to get a taste of both in one day if you’re short on time.

21. Longhorn Cavern, Burnet

Texas Longhorn Cavern ceiling glowing orange

Distance:  ~230 miles/3 hours and 40 minutes Type:  Cave Exploration & History Best Time to Go : Spring and fall

This limestone cave in Central Texas, Longhorn Cavern, was formed by a river that has since dried up. Throughout the ages, it held secrets of arrowhead crafting and guano mining for gunpowder. Over time, the cavern served as a shelter for Native Americans, a hideout for infamous outlaws, and even a licensed nuclear fallout shelter.

Take a guided tour to descend into the cave and marvel at unique formations like the Queen’s Throne and Crystal City. Remember to bring a jacket, as the cave maintains a cool temperature year-round!

22. Fredericksburg, Texas

Public library in Fredericksburg, Texas with limestone veneer

Distance:  ~240 miles/3 hours and 50 minutes Type:  Small Town & Wine Country Best Time to Go to Fredericksburg : Spring and fall for Oktoberfest celebrations

Fredericksburg is a cool little town in Texas Hill Country with an old German vibe. It’s pretty much the Texas version of Napa, packed with wineries and places to taste some amazing wines. You can stroll down historic Main Street or take a chill drive to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. And you have to try the German food while you’re there!

In spring, the wildflower fields are absolutely gorgeous, and in fall, their Oktoberfest is super fun. And if you’re into bats like me, there’s this old railroad tunnel about 10 miles away that’s home to up to 3 million bats. It’s a wild experience to see them all up close!

Final Thoughts: Best Mini Road Trips from Houston

While it might not be a jaunt to the distant Big Bend National Park , It’s pretty wild to discover the adventures lying just outside your Houston doorstep, isn’t it? I hope you found a few places to enjoy you might’ve just driven past before, like a legit European castle and deep underground caves.

Sept. 3, 2024

A young entrepreneur in Houston is taking the business world by storm, already owning and operating three vending machines by the age of 12, according to a Fox 26 report . Anthony Alvarado's journey began with an ambitious plan — to become the first millionaire in his family.

"I first started with a box of chocolates that my mom blessed me with," Alvarado told the news outlet. "After that, I went to events that taught me how to make a business, how to save and manage my money."

With guidance from a business coach, Anthony learned valuable financial principles and how to invest his earnings. This knowledge allowed him to transition from selling candy bars to owning vending machines, generating income while he focuses on school.

There are three images. The top right is Cassiopeia A. This image of Cassiopeia A resembles a disk of electric light with red clouds, glowing white streaks, red and orange flames, and an area near the center of the remnant resembling a somewhat circular region of green lightning. X-rays from Chandra are blue and reveal hot gas, mostly from supernova debris from the destroyed star, and include elements like silicon and iron. X-rays are also present as thin arcs in the outer regions of the remnant. Infrared data from Webb is red, green, and blue. Webb highlights infrared emission from dust that is warmed up because it is embedded in the hot gas seen by Chandra, and from much cooler supernova debris. Hubble data shows a multitude of stars that permeate the field of view. The image on the bottom is 30 Doradus. This release features a composite image of 30 Doradus, otherwise known as the Tarantula Nebula, a region of active star formation in a neighboring galaxy. In the image, royal blue and purple gas clouds interact with red and orange gas clouds. Specks of light and large gleaming stars peek through the colourful clouds. The patches of royal blue and purple gas clouds represent X-ray data collected by the Chandra Observatory. The brightest and most prominent blue cloud appears at the center of the image, roughly shaped like an upward pointing triangle. Darker X-ray clouds can be found near the right and left edges of the image. The red and orange gas clouds represent infrared data from the James Webb Space Telescope. These patches resemble clouds of roiling fire. The brightest and most prominent infrared cloud appears at our upper left, roughly shaped like a downward pointing triangle. Wispy white clouds outline the upward pointing bright blue triangle in the center of the image. Inside this frame is a brilliant gleaming star with six long, thin, diffraction spikes. Beside it is a cluster of smaller bright specks showing young stars in the nebula. The final image is NGC 6872. In this composite image, a large spiral galaxy has some of its superheated gas stolen by a smaller, nearby neighbor. Centered in the frame, NGC 6872 is a large spiral galaxy with two elongated arms that stretch toward our upper right and lower left. Near the white dot at the heart of the galaxy, a cloud of neon purple tints the arms, which appear steel blue at the tips. The purple represents hot gas detected by Chandra. Just to the upper left of NGC 6872 is a second spiral galaxy. Its spiraling arms are much smaller, but the bright white dot at its core is quite large, suggesting a supermassive black hole. Some of the steel blue matter and gas from NGC 6872’s lower arm appears to be floating toward the smaller galaxy, likely pulled toward the supermassive black hole.

Nasa decides to bring starliner spacecraft back to earth without crew .

The headshot image of Jessica Taveau

A group of NASA leaders sit at a table to conduct a live news conference at NASA Johnson.

NASA will return Boeing’s Starliner to Earth without astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams aboard the spacecraft, the agency announced Saturday. The uncrewed return allows NASA and Boeing to continue gathering testing data on Starliner during its upcoming flight home, while also not accepting more risk than necessary for its crew.

Wilmore and Williams, who flew to the International Space Station in June aboard NASA’s Boeing Crew Flight Test, have been busy supporting station research, maintenance, and Starliner system testing and data analysis, among other activities.

“Spaceflight is risky, even at its safest and most routine. A test flight, by nature, is neither safe, nor routine. The decision to keep Butch and Suni aboard the International Space Station and bring Boeing’s Starliner home uncrewed is the result of our commitment to safety: our core value and our North Star,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “I’m grateful to both the NASA and Boeing teams for all their incredible and detailed work.”

Wilmore and Williams will continue their work formally as part of the Expedition 71/72 crew through February 2025. They will fly home aboard a Dragon spacecraft with two other crew members assigned to the agency’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission. Starliner is expected to depart from the space station and make a safe, controlled autonomous re-entry and landing in early September.

NASA and Boeing identified helium leaks and experienced issues with the spacecraft reaction control thrusters on June 6 as Starliner approached the space station. Since then, engineering teams have completed a significant amount of work , including reviewing a collection of data, conducting flight and ground testing, hosting independent reviews with agency propulsion experts, and developing various return contingency plans. The uncertainty and lack of expert concurrence does not meet the agency’s safety and performance requirements for human spaceflight, thus prompting NASA leadership to move the astronauts to the Crew-9 mission.

“Decisions like this are never easy, but I want to commend our NASA and Boeing teams for their thorough analysis, transparent discussions, and focus on safety during the Crew Flight Test,” said Ken Bowersox, associate administrator for NASA’s Space Operations Mission Directorate. “We’ve learned a lot about the spacecraft during its journey to the station and its docked operations. We also will continue to gather more data about Starliner during the uncrewed return and improve the system for future flights to the space station.”

NASA's Boeing Crew Flight Test astronauts (from top) Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams pose on June 13, 2024 for a portrait inside the vestibule between the forward port on the International Space Station's Harmony module and Boeing's Starliner spacecraft.

Starliner is designed to operate autonomously and previously completed two uncrewed flights. NASA and Boeing will work together to adjust end-of-mission planning and Starliner’s systems to set up for the uncrewed return in the coming weeks. Starliner must return to Earth before the Crew-9 mission launches to ensure a docking port is available on station.

“Starliner is a very capable spacecraft and, ultimately, this comes down to needing a higher level of certainty to perform a crewed return,” said Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. “The NASA and Boeing teams have completed a tremendous amount of testing and analysis, and this flight test is providing critical information on Starliner’s performance in space. Our efforts will help prepare for the uncrewed return and will greatly benefit future corrective actions for the spacecraft.”

NASA’s Commercial Crew Program requires spacecraft fly a crewed test flight to prove the system is ready for regular flights to and from the space station. Following Starliner’s return, the agency will review all mission-related data to inform what additional actions are required to meet NASA’s certification requirements.

The agency’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission, originally slated with four crew members , will launch no earlier than Tuesday, Sept. 24. The agency will share more information about the Crew-9 complement when details are finalized.

NASA and SpaceX currently are working several items before launch, including reconfiguring seats on the Crew-9 Dragon, and adjusting the manifest to carry additional cargo, personal effects, and Dragon-specific spacesuits for Wilmore and Williams. In addition, NASA and SpaceX now will use new facilities at Space Launch Complex-40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida to launch Crew-9, which provides increased operational flexibility around NASA’s planned Europa Clipper launch.

The Crew-9 mission will be the ninth rotational mission to the space station under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which works with the American aerospace industry to meet the goal of safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation to and from the orbital outpost on American-made rockets and spacecraft launching from American soil.

For more than two decades, people have lived and worked continuously aboard the International Space Station, advancing scientific knowledge and demonstrating new technologies, making research breakthroughs not possible on Earth. The station is a critical testbed for NASA to understand and overcome the challenges of long-duration spaceflight and to expand commercial opportunities in low Earth orbit. As commercial companies focus on providing human space transportation services and destinations as part of a robust low Earth orbit economy , NASA’s Artemis campaign is underway at the Moon where the agency is preparing for future human exploration of Mars.
