If your idea of getting away from it all includes a vacation without the kids, consider booking an adults-only or adults-oriented cruise . While some lines provide a fully adults-only experience (i.e., children are not allowed on board), others offer adult-focused venues and activities on the ship to keep you separate from younger patrons.

The following cruise lines provide upscale amenities, immersive excursions, sophisticated dining options, lively nighttime entertainment and time for relaxation among like-minded – and similarly aged – travelers.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Travelers ages 18 and older are welcome aboard Viking 's adults-only ships, which feature destination-focused itineraries around the world. The line's 11 oceangoing ships carry between 930 and 998 guests (at double occupancy) and offer luxurious, comfortable Scandinavian-style spaces. The line will add Viking Vesta to its ocean fleet in 2025.

Viking's exploration program boasts special access to behind-the-scenes experiences curated for travelers who are interested in history, food, the arts or science. Immerse yourself in local culture with a visit to a traditional family farm near Bergen, Norway, or spend an evening dining on Chinese specialties at a home-hosted dinner in Shanghai .

In addition to these off-the-beaten-path excursions, guests can visit iconic sites like the ancient city of Ephesus (Kuşadasi) in Turkey and the Acropolis in Athens, Greece . Viking also hosts onboard enrichment programs like cooking classes and lectures by historians. Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations with a private veranda, all meals (including specialty dining venues), wine and beer at onboard lunch and dinner, 24-hour room service, one free excursion per port, complimentary Wi-Fi access, and access to onboard amenities such as the Nordic Spa and fitness center.

In addition to its ocean vessels, Viking offers river cruises in destinations around the world – including Mississippi River cruises aboard Viking Mississippi. The line also has two Polar Class 6 expedition ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, which traverse waterways from Canada, the U.S. and South America to remote destinations in Antarctica and the Arctic.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages offers an adults-only retreat for guests ages 18 and older. The line currently has three sister ships: Scarlet Lady (the first in the fleet), Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . The line's fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, is set to debut in September 2025.

All the ships in this adults-only cruise line feature 1,404 cabins (most with balconies) and RockStar Quarters suites, where guests have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive outdoor deck space. The superyacht-inspired vessels boast 20-plus eateries, including restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, and a variety of onboard fitness and wellness spaces. At Redemption Spa, relax and recharge in the mud room or salt therapy chamber – and then take rejuvenating dips in the hot and cold plunge pools. You can even order a bottle of bubbly anywhere on the ship via the Virgin Voyages app's secret "Shake for Champagne" feature.

Itineraries on Virgin Voyages span destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and Morocco, as well as trans-Atlantic crossings. The line will also feature 21 new ports across its global fleet in 2025, including destinations in Iceland, Turkey, Oman, Italy, Portugal, the Cayman Islands and more. Cruise fares cover meals at all the dining venues and basic beverages such as soda, water, tea and coffee. Gratuities for the crew, Wi-Fi access, entertainment and group fitness classes are also included. While on board, be sure to indulge in a swanky dinner at The Wake and an immersive show at The Red Room, a unique multiform theater at sea.

P&O Cruises

Two ships in P&O Cruises' U.K.-based fleet – Arcadia and Aurora – are exclusively for adults 18 and older. Arcadia, the slightly newer of the two ships (debuted in 2005), carries 2,094 guests at double occupancy, plus 866 crew. The ship departs from Southampton in the U.K. and sails to a variety of European destinations, ranging from Spain and the Canary Islands to Norway and Iceland; some cruises visit the U.S. and Canada. The ship will also sail world cruises in January 2025 and 2026.

Arcadia's 15 restaurants, cafes and bars include Indian cuisine with a British twist at Sindhu, as well as steaks and seafood by renowned British chef Marco Pierre White at Ocean Grill. Passengers can take a class to sample the line's branded gins; sip Champagne at Intermezzo, the ship's cocktail and Champagne venue; or enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif at the yacht-inspired Spinnaker. After exploring exciting ports of call, head back on board to enjoy Arcadia's elegant interiors and top-notch service. You can splurge on a stone therapy treatment and a visit to the thermal suite at the spa for some extra pampering, followed by a live show at the three-tiered theater, The Palladium. Then, finish off the evening dancing the night away at The Globe.

Aurora is a slightly more intimate ship, carrying 1,874 passengers (double occupancy) and 850 crew members. A four-level atrium gallery sits at the heart of the vessel. Itineraries include destinations in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the British Isles, Iceland, the Caribbean and South America. There are 19 restaurants, bars and cafes on the ship, including club-style restaurant Alexandria and casual spots like The Beach House. After dinner, live entertainment and dancing await you at the show lounge Carmen's, as do larger productions at the ritzy 660-seat Curzon Theatre.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While some all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers that larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port, unlike some competitors' itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a 12-night voyage from Rome to watch the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2025, or a 25-night cruise in February 2025 from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . In addition, the line is extending its offerings on Country Intensive voyages in 2024 and 2025 with itineraries in various continental European countries, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Iceland and Australia.

On board, you'll find a wide selection of casual and formal dining options ranging from Windows Cafe to the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. Specialty restaurant offerings include top-notch steak and seafood at Prime C and Italian fare at Aqualina. Atlas Bar is a unique venue on Azamara Onward (the line's newest ship), though its artisanal cocktail menu is also available on the line's other ships. Discoveries Lounge is another guest-favorite spot, and wine aficionados will enjoy pairing limited-production and rare vintages from the Wine Cellar with dinner.

Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations; select spirits, wine and beer; gratuities; 24-hour room service; and nonalcoholic beverages. You'll also have access to complimentary AzAmazing Celebrations with special evening and daytime events ashore and on the ship. You can purchase a package that includes additional amenities like unlimited Wi-Fi, specialty dining, shore excursion credits and other perks. Butler service and other extras come with suite accommodations.

When it launched in 2019, Scenic Eclipse I was touted as "The World's First Discovery Yacht." The intimate vessel offers an all-inclusive, ultra-luxurious experience for just 228 guests (double occupancy). The line's second luxury yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, which is nearly identical to its sister ship, debuted from Lisbon, Portugal , in April 2023. The Polar Class 6 rating enables these two yachts to sail to destinations like Antarctica; on these expedition-style voyages, the ship carries only 200 guests and offers a nearly one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio.

All suite accommodations include a private veranda or terrace; butler service; state-of-the-art amenities; a king-size Scenic Slumber Bed; and an in-suite minibar stocked with wine, spirits and other personally selected beverages. You'll also find indulgences like onboard helicopters for intimate excursions and the line's submersibles for underwater exploration.

Guests can enjoy up to 10 dining experiences on the ship, including French fine dining at Lumière; innovative Asian flavors at Koko's Asian Fusion; Italian, steak and seafood specialties at Elements; or an immersive dining experience at Chef's Garden @ Epicure. When it's time for an after-dinner drink, sample craft cocktails or the impressive selection of whiskeys available at Scenic Lounge Bar. Other onboard activities include getting an invigorating treatment at Senses Spa or just relaxing with Champagne and spectacular views on deck 10 at the Sky Bar.

Scenic's ships sail to destinations in Australia and the South Pacific; Europe and the Mediterranean; Asia; the Americas and the Caribbean; and the polar regions of Antarctica and the Arctic.

Frequently Asked Questions

"Adults-only cruise ships – or adults-only spaces on cruise ships – have become increasingly popular over the years," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor at Cruise Critic. "That's not only because fewer people are having families. It's also because parents themselves often want the chance to get away, either by themselves for a romantic trip or with friends to celebrate a special occasion, girls' or guys' weekend, or milestone birthdays."

"I seek out adult spaces on cruise ships primarily because I want my experience on a ship to mirror my life on land – a little quieter, with more sophisticated food and drink options," she explains. "I also appreciate the opportunity to connect with my friends who are parents in a space where we can have personal one-on-one conversations or let loose a bit with some drinks. Adults with children are more than just their kids, after all – and they also appreciate a space where they don't have to worry about their little ones."

Anne Scully, a partner at the luxury travel company EMBARK Beyond, says, "With so many cruise lines and sailings, it's always a good idea to have options – and adults-only cruises are very popular." She adds, "Viking and Virgin have always focused on adults-only cruises and most river cruises also cater to adult passengers."

Adults-only cruises are designed with guests ages 18 and older in mind, from the staterooms and dining venues to the onboard entertainment and shore excursions. What you typically won't find on board are water or theme parks, climbing walls, game rooms, and restaurants serving kid-friendly foods.

If you're looking for a relaxing, fun and romantic vacation without the kids in tow – and you don't want to deal with the other passengers' children on your getaway – consider booking a sailing specifically for cruisers at least 18 years old. Alternatively, select a cruise line or ship that caters to mostly adults and doesn't offer any services, kids clubs, babysitting or activities for children.

You don't have to be a kid to be a Disney Cruise Line fan. While the line does not have an adults-only vessel within the fleet, there are plenty of kid-free spaces for adults only. Adults can enjoy cocktails, dinner and entertainment in several venues and relax at designated pool areas on the ship. There's also private, adults-only stretch of beach, Serenity Bay, on the line's private island, Castaway Cay.

In addition, Disney offers one of the best programs to keep youngsters entertained at sea, so you'll find that many of the children hang out in the kids club during the day and in the evening. These club spaces are divided by age groups, and they're typically open until midnight or 1 a.m. so parents – and even adults without kids – can enjoy a night out on the ship sans kids.

Don’t Want to Cruise With Kids? Sail on These Adult-Focused Cruise Ships

From cruise lines with a minimum age requirement to itineraries geared specifically to adults, on these cruises you won’t see many or any little ones..

Whether you have kids or grandkids, nieces or nephews, or not, whether you love kids or don’t, sometimes there is something very appealing about the idea of a relaxing cruise vacation minus the youngsters. That’s where adults-only cruises come in.

Back in the late 1990s when Torstein Hagen created Viking River Cruises , now by far Europe’s largest river cruise operator, it was purposely designed for adults with no kids allowed aboard . That philosophy stands as the company has moved into ocean cruises and expedition ships .

Likewise, when British billionaire Richard Branson launched the first ship of his Virgin Voyages cruise brand three years ago, it was with no one under age 18 allowed aboard. The cruise line later riffed on the subject with ads showing kids very displeased that they couldn’t get in on the fun with grown-ups.

No other major cruise lines outright ban the under-18 set, but there are ways travelers can lessen the chances there will be many or any children on their cruise.

If you really want to avoid kids, don’t cruise during a school break period (such as spring break, summer, or winter holidays), pick an itinerary for more than two weeks (length being a deterrent to the family crowd— world cruise , anyone?), or look toward an ultra-luxurious cruise or one that involves an expensive airfare—not everyone wants to splurge on an upscale experience for their progeny.

Also keep in mind the smaller the ship—and fewer experiences for kids (such as kids clubs and big water slides)—the greater the chance youngsters won’t be aboard. Here are our picks for the best cruises for adults.

Find serenity in one of Viking’s notoriously tricked out Nordic-style spas on its ocean and expedition vessels.

Eric Laignel/Viking

Whether you cruise with Viking on one of the company’s many 190-passenger river cruise vessels in Europe, on the line’s 930-passenger ocean cruise ships that sail around the world, or on one of its two 378-passenger expedition ships, you’ll be treated to a fine-tuned cruising experience geared strictly to adults. You need to be age 18 and up to get aboard to enjoy the many perks covered in the all-inclusive fares. Those perks consist of shore excursions in every port, free wine and beer, all meals (including numerous restaurant experiences and nightly seafood buffets), engaging lectures hosted by historians and other experts, and Nordic spas complete with hot sauna, steam room, and a chilly snow grotto.

To book: Viking’s 15-day Grand European Tour sails from Amsterdam to Budapest on the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers, starting from $4,999 per person.

Virgin Voyages' Razzle Dazzle restaurant features a playful mostly red interior

Head to Virgin Voyages’ Razzle Dazzle restaurant where the adults-only clientele can pick from menu items that are either “naughty” or “nice.”

Virgin Voyages

Adult-only cruises offered by Virgin Voyages take place on four 2,770-passenger ships that sail the Caribbean, Europe, and the South Pacific. The atmosphere aboard is edgy, cheeky, full of subtle—and not so subtle—sexual innuendo, and fun done in an inclusive, adult way unlike anything the cruise industry has ever seen before . Expect lots of day drinking, lively nighttime parties and entertainment, a tattoo parlor, and indulgent food, including an over-the-top molecular dining experience and the “Lick Me Till . . . Ice Cream” shop (for no extra charge)—in between trips to the wellness retreat with a mud room and ’80s-style aerobics classes for the full detox and retox Virgin experience.

To book: Virgin’s 4-night Fire & Sunset Soirées sailing , embarks Miami for Key West and then Virgin’s private Beach Club at Bimini in the Bahamas, from $1,564 for two.

Sail in sophistication—and likely without kids—on Azamara cruise ships.

Courtesy of Azamara

Azamara Cruises

This upscale line with four small ships does not restrict kids but tends to attract well-traveled couples aged 50 and up who like the idea of seeing the world from the vantage point of a floating boutique hotel. The atmosphere on Azamara sailings is both convivial and sophisticated, on ships that carry a maximum of 704 guests. The vessels feature a library with a faux fireplace, an upscale steakhouse for an elevated dining experience, and a “living room” for drinking and socializing.

Itineraries focus on maximizing time in port, with cultural immersion, including small group shore excursions and “AzAmazing” experiences where, for instance, you and other guests might be treated to a complimentary private acrobatics show in Monaco. Special golf cruises with PerryGolf include play at such prestigious courses as Ireland’s Royal Portrush.

To book: Sail on the 690-passenger Azamara Journey for a 10-night Croatia Intensive Voyage , from $2,219 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

With a fleet of 490- to 750-passenger ships, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the most expensive cruise lines out there and touts that it is “the world’s most luxurious cruise line”—a status it gets by, for instance, outfitting its latest ships with Carrara marble details, crystal chandeliers, over-the-top suites, and multi-million-dollar art collections. Fares include a broad choice of shore excursions such as a mud bath experience in Lautoka, Fiji, premium wine and spirits, and business-class international airfare. While the line does not ban kids—and in fact, encourages families at holidays and on summer cruises in Alaska—not everyone wants to pay top dollar for experiences that may go over kids’ heads.

To book: An 11-night trip from Miami to the Caribbean on the 496-passenger Seven Seas Navigator starts at $5,699 for two passengers.

Silversea Cruises

With its sleek ships, a focus on cuisine and drink as a cultural experience, butlers that pamper all guests, and an overall ultra-luxury ambience, Silversea is a favorite of well-heeled adult travelers. Grandparents may bring a multigenerational group aboard for a holiday or summertime sailing (the 596-passenger Silver Muse is the only Silversea ship with a children’s playroom), but with air-inclusive fares that start at around $800 a day, and no discounts for kids, you’re unlikely to have your pool time interrupted by shouts of “Marco Polo.” Rather, you’re more likely to hear someone call an attendant over for more champagne and a side of caviar, both complimentary and available 24/7.

To book: A 10-night sailing from Civitavecchia (Rome) to Barcelona on the 596-passenger Silver Moon , is priced from $7,600 per person.

Windstar guarantees there won’t be young kids aboard—you must be age eight or up to sail. That said, it’s rare to see any kids at all. The upscale line’s 148- to 342-passenger ships deliver an intimate, adult atmosphere whether you are on a four- or five-masted ship with billowing sails or an all-suite motorized yacht. Cabins and suites are mostly designed for two and attract couples looking for romance at sea, in addition to excellent dining, enhanced by the line’s status as the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation. Borrow a kayak from your ship’s own marina by day and cap an evening of food and drink with quiet time out on deck, watching the moon reflect on the sea.

To book: The 7-day Dreams of Tahiti itinerary takes place on the 312-passenger sailing ship Star Breeze , with all-inclusive pricing starting from $3,399 per person.

For more than 2,000 years, these azure waters have provided a valuable connective route for both trade and travelers. Historical monuments, regional cuisine, luxe shopping, and sweeping views are all within grasp aboard a ship. Whether you're traveling solo or with your extended family, many cruise lines have options for adults-only or all-ages itineraries. Explore the best Mediterranean cruises for every traveler.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

nacho_gutierrez/Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

If the biggest luxury is convenience, Scenic is among the top cruise lines to pick. The Australian-based company features all-inclusive trips — no upgraded drinks package needed — on a 228-passenger, all-suite ship for an intimate experience. Guests can travel in six-star luxury with a personal butler assigned to each cabin. Turn to helicopters (and even a submersible) for a different view of a destination.

Trip to Try: Mediterranean Escape: Spain & the French Riviera

This eight-day itinerary moves along the coast of Spain to the French Riviera. With stops in hallmark ports such as Barcelona, St. Tropez, and Monte Carlo, there's no need to worry about missing out on these popular destinations. Quiet, less-visited ports include Costa Brava's Roses and Villefranche-sur-Mer just outside of Nice. Take to the sky for an aerial view of Sanary-sur-Mer inside Scenic Eclipse 's private helicopter. On the island of Corsica, visit the historic citadel and old town, which Napoleon Bonaparte freed from Italian rule in 1791. This journey spans the bright lights of elegant cities to quiet, luxurious beaches, giving travelers the best of both.

Michel Verdure/Seabourn Cruise Line

Fine dining abounds on board with five restaurants and six lounges to choose from. Guests can expect plush furnishings and modern design. Though all rooms are terrace suites, there are also two-story loft suites and owner's suites with spacious private terraces.

With a maritime heritage in the region that stretches back to the 17th century, the family has carefully selected ports that reflect their own travels.

Trip to Try: A Journey to UNESCO Malta & Balearic Bliss

Spend 10 days sailing across the western Mediterranean aboard an all-suite ship designed with clean, simple lines. Bookended by Rome and Barcelona, this voyage includes stops at classic Italian destinations such as Naples, Sicily, and Sardinia. But what sets it apart from other Mediterranean itineraries are stops in Malta, Tunisia, and Menorca. Sicily's best beaches, fortified walls, and whitewashed mosques are just a few of the varied landscapes guests will see. With floor-to-ceiling windows, the spacious suites, penthouses, ocean residences (up to 1,064 square feet), and multiroom owner's suites make cruising feel like home.

Azamara is a sumptuous option, but it’s not just about glitz and glamour on this line. The company also emphasizes hyperlocal experiences that allow its passengers to dive deep into the history, food, and culture at ports, if only for a day. There are a variety of destinations and trip lengths, including 10-, 12-, and 15-night voyages, some of which include overnight stays in ports so guests can get the full scope of a destination.

No need to worry about tipping, upgrading a drinks package, or purchasing standard excursions; the fare is all-inclusive. Onboard accommodations range from spacious, minimalist rooms with an ocean view to yacht suites featuring a private terrace with lounge chairs.

Trip to Try: Mediterranean Enchantment

Journey from Athens, home of the Acropolis, to Croatia's renowned walled city, Dubrovnik, during this seven-night trip. Emerald notably does not skip over Albania, though there are plenty of stops along Greece's west coast and nearby islands. Oceania Cruises

Silversea is tailor-made for those who like to cruise with fewer passengers on board. The line offers ships with 51 to 364 suites, which enables more personalized service and refined amenities. It also offers packages to reduce the stress that comes with pay-as-you-go travel.

Trip to Try:   Venice to Athens

This 11-day trip makes its way through 11 ports in four countries, including Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece. Walk cobblestone streets, see the distinctive windmills of Santorini, discover buzzing nightlife and secluded beaches on the Croatian island of Hvar, and more. On board, dine in one of the ship’s restaurants, take a dip in the pool, or lounge in a common space to discuss the day’s adventure with fellow guests.

A lavish French cruise line, Ponant has been sailing since 1988. Today, the small boats, Ponant Explorers, are outfitted with just 92 suites that can serve no more than 184 travelers. Throughout the boat, guests will find light-filled spaces and cozy cabins. These ships feature Blue Eye, an unusual lounge set below sea level for an underwater view of the ship's surroundings. From polar expeditions to countries nestled along the Mediterranean, Ponant is a reliable option for those seeking an immersive experience.

Trip to Try: Ancient Wonders and Culinary Delights: Cruising Southern Italy and Sicily

Partnered with Smithsonian Journeys, Ponant offers a gourmand's Italian dream on this eight-day cruise. This trip begins in Valletta, Malta, before sailing to Sicily and up the Italian coastline to Livorno. Guests can drink volcanic wines in Taormina, eat Neapolitan pizza in Naples, and see fresh mozzarella made in Agropoli. Back on board, a guest chef prepares destination-inspired dishes. In addition to Italy's culinary delights, there are plenty of opportunities to see classic sites such as the Vatican and the Trevi Fountain.

Holland America

Michel Verdure/Courtesy of Holland America Line

Holland America doesn’t have the wide-ranging options like other cruise lines on this list, however, the sailings it does offer are top-notch. Cabins range from 151-square-foot interior staterooms to 712-square-foot suites to stretch out in.

Trip to Try:  14-Day Adriatic Dream

The 14-day trip includes stops in Italy (including Venice, Sicily, Amalfi, and Rome), Greece (including Katakolon, Souda, and Mykonos), Albania, and Malta (including Valletta and Mgarr). Take advantage of the ship’s luxurious spa on days at sea with the bonus of rocking waves that lull you into tranquility.

Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises is another that may not have a massive selection of Mediterranean options, but the line more than makes up for it with stellar excursions, plentiful onboard entertainment, and kids and teen programming. Sink into the plush beds, which were created in collaboration with a sleep expert, for a great night's rest to feel fully recharged.

Trip to Try:  10-day Mediterranean and Israel

The 10-day trip stops in six ports across Italy, Greece, Israel, and Cyprus. It offers dozens of shore excursions to take part in, including historical tours, vineyard tours and wine tastings, local market visits, and much more. Room options range from interior staterooms to massive premium suites with oversized balconies.

Cunard Line

Visit Seville from Cadiz, see Gaudí's architecture in Barcelona, tour Napoleon Bonaparte's childhood home on the island of Corsica, and shop your way through Rome. With several days at sea, you can make the most of onboard amenities.

Virgin Voyages

There's no doubt that Virgin Voyages is a departure from traditional cruising. With plush cabins and the promise of a party atmosphere, the cruise line has ditched many industry mainstays. Instead, guests will find PJ parties, pop-up circus installations, and open seating for over 20 meals designed by Michelin-starred chefs.

Trip to Try: The Irresistible Med

When you set sail on The Irresistible Med from Barcelona to Ibiza, there are plenty of opportunities to explore beaches, museums, and historic sites. For those hoping to visit the quaint villages of Provence, the French port of Toulon provides an easy access point. Other stops include Marina di Carrara, known for its sumptuous marble, and the island of Corsica. Enjoy a day of relaxation by sweating it out in the sauna or lounging poolside when out at sea. Ibiza is the final port-of-call, which gives guests plenty of time to enjoy the party capital on their own.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean is the one to choose for groups with varied interests. Think, kids who want to play all day, adults who want to lounge by the pool, friends who want to take a historical tour, or those who want to stay up enjoying the onboard entertainment. It's also one of the few cruise lines to offer Mediterranean options for those short on time or who want to add a quick sailing to a longer trip.

Trip to Try:  Three-Night Western Mediterranean

Spend three perfect days sailing from Rome to Barcelona. The quick cruise is a great way to hit the water if you want to spend a weekend at sea on an otherwise land-bound trip. With a day in Naples, and access to Capri, check out a few shore excursions, or go it alone, knowing you have a comfortable place to call home each night.

The best adults-only cruises to try if you can’t stand being around kids on vacation

Gene Sloan

What are the best adults-only cruises — the ones that not only ban kids but cater to grown-up tastes and interests?

You may be asking because you just spent time on a megaship where the kids took over the pools and hot tubs (not to mention the elevators), much to your chagrin. Or, you might be looking for a vacation with more lectures and less limbo, or perhaps a cruise that skews more R-rated than G.

The list of cruises for adults only is, alas, very short. Only a handful of cruise lines ban children from their ships and promise cruises for grown-ups — perhaps the most notable being cruise newcomer Virgin Voyages and fast-growing Viking .

The trend in recent years in cruising is, in fact, more family-focused, with more kids appearing on ships of all types. Indeed, some of the biggest, best-known cruise brands have gone full-bore after the family market , to the extent that the sun-soaked top decks of their ships sometimes can feel more like a scene out of "Daddy Day Care" than a blissful vacation retreat.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Don't despair, though. Even as many lines double down on the family market, a small group of cruise operators remains all-in on the idea of adult-only cruises.

Here are our picks for the best adults-only cruise lines, with a grown-up vibe to boot.

european cruises adults only

The much-ballyhooed new line from Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group has banned children under the age of 18 from its ships. It's part of an effort to create a hipper, more-sophisticated, adult-focused vibe that company leaders think is sorely lacking in the cruise world.

"We have done a ton of research really trying to create a sophisticated experience," Virgin Voyages CEO Tom McAlpin said in the days before the line's 2021 debut . "I've done some personal research. We found that when you put kids in the pool, they scream, and we don't want that."

Related: I've been on more than 150 cruise ships. Here's what I thought of Scarlet Lady

Virgin Voyages' first three adults-only cruise ships, the 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady and sister vessels Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady , cater to grown-ups looking for a decidedly adult sort of fun with such offerings as interactive dance parties and a drag queen performance. It also offers a karaoke lounge with pink-and-purple karaoke rooms and a tattoo parlor (read about how one of our staffers was among the first to get inked on board ).

What you won't find on the three ships (a fourth is due later this year) are waterslides, watery splash zones, teen lounges and all the other family-friendly features that are becoming so common on bigger ships.

european cruises adults only

To create an adults-only cruise experience, Virgin Voyages took a page from fast-growing Viking 's playbook. Viking's 12-ship ocean cruise division has banned children under the age of 18 since it debuted in 2015. In addition, its 80-ship river cruise division has had a minimum age limit for more than two decades. (Initially, the cut-off was age 12; as of 2019, that jumped to 18, too.)

Not that Virgin and Viking are anything alike. Virgin is designed to appeal to millennials and older travelers who want to party like they are millennials. Viking, by contrast, is the anti-millennial line.

Viking's target market is squarely in the 55-plus bracket. It zeroes in on that demographic with an upscale, destination-focused experience that is heavy on what the industry likes to call "enrichment" — onboard lectures and other learning opportunities. It also emphasizes tours focused on history and culture (with at least one free excursion in each port) and entertainment offerings that veer more toward string quartets than dancers in string bikinis.

"What we're looking to do is try not to be everything for everyone," Viking's executive vice president of marketing, Richard Marnell, told TPG. "We do not have a kids' program. What we have is . . . [an] immersive experience that is best suited for people that are intellectually curious."

P&O Cruises

european cruises adults only

This storied British line clearly sees the demand for adults-only cruise ships, but it isn't giving up on the family market, either. The line splits the difference between the two segments. Five of its seven vessels (Arvia, Iona, Britannia, Ventura and Azura) are marketed as "family-friendly" and open to passengers of all ages. The other two (Arcadia and Aurora) are reserved exclusively for adults.

Given that more than 95% of the Southampton, England-based cruise line's passengers are British, you'll probably want to be either British yourself or a major Anglophile to consider booking one of the latter two vessels. Sailing with P&O Cruises is a very British experience, something that becomes clear the moment you see its vessels. They feature hulls painted with massive Union Jacks.

In addition, you'll find quintessentially British offerings on board P&O Cruises ships, such as elaborate afternoon teas, quoits on the top deck and restaurant menus designed by chefs big in the United Kingdom, such as Marco Pierre White.

That said, if you're a Princess Cruises fan, you might feel right at home on a P&O Cruises ship. Nestled under the same corporate umbrella, the two brands are longtime sisters that have swapped ships back and forth (though Holland America fans might be interested to know that Arcadia actually shares a ship design with that line's Vista class).

For booking purposes, P&O Cruises considers anyone who will be 18 or older when sailing an adult.

Saga Cruises

european cruises adults only

Like P&O Cruises, Saga Cruises is a British line that has honed in on the business of offering voyages just for adults. But it goes way beyond what P&O Cruises or any other line does in shunning younger travelers. The minimum age at Saga Cruises isn't 18 or even 21 — it's 50.

That's right — you won't find a single millennial or even that many Generation Xers on board a Saga Cruises ship (at 58, even the oldest members of Generation X only make the cut-off by eight years). You will find a heck of a lot of baby boomers, many of them retired.

Saga Cruises operates just two ocean vessels, sailing exclusively out of the U.K., plus several river ships. Like P&O Cruises, it's a product that is probably best for British travelers or big-time Anglophiles.

Other adult-focused cruises

In addition to lines that ban passengers under the age of 18 outright, a number of cruise operators allow young children but get relatively few of them.

Examples include such upscale lines as Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Silversea Cruises and Seabourn , which cater heavily to an older crowd. Small-ship specialist Windstar Cruises allows tweens and teenagers on its six ships, but it doesn't allow any children under the age of 8.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, which sells both ocean and river cruises, traditionally discourages customers from bringing passengers under the age of 12 on vessels except during Christmas holiday sailings.

Also, the longer the cruise, the fewer children you will find. Book a two-plus-week sailing to a more exotic location, like Asia or South America, during the school year on a line like Holland America or Princess, and you'll share the ship predominantly with adults.

Unforgettable Getaways: Discover the Best Adults-Only Cruises

author image

See recent posts by Megan Johnson

Going on a cruise is on the bucket list of many travelers. While most cruises seem adult-oriented, most of them allow children, and although many do have kid zones and clubs, there is no avoiding them on the ship unless you book an adults-only cruise. Luckily, there are several to choose from.

While some cruise lines aren’t necessarily adults, they cater to older crowds, and you’d be hard-pressed to find any younger passengers. Most of these adult cruises are fairly luxurious and not particularly family-friendly. From Europe to the South Pacific, 3-day to 3-months, here are the best adults-only cruises (or nearly adults-only) for your next sailing adventure.

Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking Venus

Viking Ocean Cruises offers luxurious small-ship cruises with elegant Scandinavian-inspired decor, cultural enrichment programs, and inclusive amenities such as shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and fine dining. Travel to destinations in Europe, Africa/The Middle East, North America, the Caribbean, South America, Asia and Australia. Kids aren’t the only thing you won’t find on Viking Ocean Cruises; they also have no casinos, no charge for wine or beer at lunch and dinner, and no entrance fee for the spa.

Every room on a Viking Ocean Cruise has a king-sized bed, private veranda, heated bathroom floors, and other amenities to ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible. Depending on the cabin category, amenities may include comfortable bedding with premium linens, ample storage space, flat-screen TVs with complimentary on-demand movies and programming, mini-refrigerators with complimentary beverages, and luxury toiletries in the bathrooms.

Enjoy one offshore excursion at all ports of call, including visits to UNESCO sites. Onboard, you’ll have access to serene Scandinavian spaces like the library (curated with literature pertinent to your destination), and the Living Room, a perfect escape for tranquility during your cruise vacation. You’ll have a pool, lounge, spa and more to keep you occupied during days at sea.

Minimum Age: 18

Viking River Cruises

Viking Seine Ships

Viking River Cruises offers luxury river cruises across Europe, Asia, and Egypt. They focus on providing immersive cultural experiences with expert-led shore excursions, onboard enrichment programs, and upscale amenities. Viking emphasizes comfort, exploration, and enrichment, catering to travelers interested in history, art, and cuisine. Viking aims to provide a refined and intimate cruising experience along some of the world’s most iconic waterways with a fleet of modern river ships.

Choose from rooms with windows, balconies, and verandas; all beds come with queen-sized beds that can convert into two twin beds if you wish. Higher-end suites include welcome champagne to start your journey off right. Amenities include heated bathroom floors, individual climate control, and underbed suitcase storage.

Onboard, enjoy guest lectures and port talks for a more in-depth look at your destination, live performances, craft and cooking demonstrations, and more to keep you occupied on river days. While you may not have as many restaurant choices, the Restaurant and Aquavit Terrace® provide a culinary experience like no other. Wine, beer, and other non-alcoholic drinks are included in your base fare. Offshore, enjoy privileged access to attractions not normally open to the general public.

P&O Cruises – Aurora and Arcadia

P&O offers adults-only cruises and family-friendly sailings, with Aurora and Arcadia reserved for adults only. With stylish decor, gourmet dining options, and a focus on hospitality, P&O appeals to couples and solo travelers seeking a refined experience.

Aurora is the smallest ship, at an 1874-passenger capacity, and provides a more intimate experience. Choose from a wide range of itineraries through Spain, the British Isles, and the Mediterranean. Although a smaller ship, you won’t be lacking for entertainment; the Aurora hosts three pools, nineteen restaurants and bars, entertainment including a game show, illusion show, theatre, live music, and a spa.

Budget travelers can choose from inside, and sea-view rooms, and travelers with a bit more to spend and who prefer a bit more comfort in their accommodations can choose from balcony rooms or suites and mini-suites.

Arcadia, with a 2388-passenger capacity, is the bigger of the two, but you still won’t see anyone under eighteen onboard. Choose from itineraries in Europe, Scandinavia, and the Mediterranean, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, take Arcadia’s 99-day around-the-world cruise. With two pools, fifteen restaurants and bars, a three-tier theatre, an art gallery, a cinema and more – you won’t be without things to see and do while on board.

Like Aurora, Arcadia has a room for whatever your needs are: budget inside rooms for those who know they won’t be spending a lot of time in their room, sea view rooms, balcony rooms, as well as mini-suites and suites for those who need more space while traveling.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages’ cruises are all adults-only (though for the young at heart)- they offer a trendy and inclusive atmosphere with unique features like drag brunches, experimental dining, and wellness offerings. It’s ideal for travelers looking for a playful and unconventional cruise experience. Choose from destinations worldwide, with each ship holding about 2700 passengers. Setting sail in 2021, Virgin Voyages has quickly become the go-to cruise line for anyone looking to cruise the waters without kids.

You won’t find any buffets on Virgin cruises; instead, you’ll find “intimate spaces and diverse options to match your mood” with menus created by Michelin-starred chefs. Stay fit with the outdoor running track or fitness room, relax at the spa, and be entertained on-board with your choice of dance, musical and theatrical performances.

You’ll have your pick from choice of rooms, from the insider rooms, the most affordable sea view rooms, a Sea Terrace Cabin, which have the added feature of a private terrace where you can relax and take in the ocean breeze. And for those looking for the ultimate luxury, you can choose from RockStar Suites: which include various perks such as access to a dedicated RockStar Agent, priority boarding, and exclusive dining experiences, or Mega RockStar Suites which feature private hot tubs, and access to exclusive areas of the ship.

Silversea Cruises

Silver Whisper

Silversea specializes in ultra-luxury small-ship cruises, with spacious suites, personalized service, and immersive itineraries to exotic destinations on all seven continents. While not strictly adult-only, Silversea’s intimate atmosphere appeals to travelers seeking a refined and exclusive experience.

Included in your booking is a suite, butler, one on-shore excursion per port, and all food and beverages. Every suite has an ocean view, and the more luxurious ones have a veranda and ample seating room. No matter what you choose, it will be spacious – Silversea boasts the most space per guest than any other cruiseline.

You’ll find a spa, fitness center, various restaurants, and entertainment onboard.  On Silver Nova, Silver Moon, and Silver Dawn, you’ll find Silversea’s S.A.L.T. program, S.A.L.T stands for Sea And Land Taste, which gives you the chance to delve into a true culinary experience wherever you are: from meeting the most famous chef in a country, exploring an organic farm, or making pastry- you’ll get a hands-on culinary experience.

Holland America Line

Like Silversea, Holland America allows guests under eighteen, but they are geared towards adults, and any cruise over 25 days does not offer a kids club. Holland America appeals to travelers seeking a traditional yet sophisticated cruise experience. Destinations for cruises over 25 days include around-the-world cruises, the Arctic Circle, the Pacific, and Japan.

Holland America’s ships offer budget inside rooms without windows for guests who merely want a place to lay their head at night, and they offer sea view suites in various sizes to suit your needs. All rooms include 24-hour in-room dining, daily housekeeping, storage, and complimentary shoe-shining service.

Onboard, you’ll find a spa and salon, fitness center, pools, a casino, restaurants, and a wide variety of entertainment.

Minimum Age: None

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Seven Seas Splendor®

Regent Seven Seas Cruises is known for its all-inclusive luxury, offering spacious suites, gourmet dining, and complimentary shore excursions. Another line that is not exclusively adults-only, Regent’s upscale atmosphere attracts discerning travelers seeking a refined and pampering experience.

Regent’s ships are smaller than the major cruise lines – ranging from 490 passengers to 750. One thing they all have in common? Luxury. Their Explorer line features balconies with every suite, with the highlight being their Regent Suite, which features a balcony with a mini pool, private in-suite spa with sauna, steam room, jetted tub, walk-in closets, two bedrooms, living room, and free laundry. Prices start around $10,000 a night for the Regent suite, so save your pennies. Their small cruise ships offer an intimate luxury experience, and two of the ships in this class (the Seven Seas Voyager and Seven Seas Mariner are all-balcony suites.

On board, you’ll stay busy with pools, a library, a casino, a spa, a salon, a fitness center, and evening entertainment. Enjoy meals at restaurants featuring cuisines from around the world, poolside service, and in-room service.

Saga Cruises

Spirit of Discovery

The minimum age for someone to book a Saga Cruise is fifty, although companions can be forty or older. Saga prides itself on offering a premium and all-inclusive experience. They offer a variety of itineraries to destinations around the world, including Europe, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and beyond.

Balconies are standard with whatever type of cabin you choose and include ensuite bathrooms, turndown service, fresh fruit, and more. Many cabins include full in-cabin afternoon tea service, have a personalized mini bar, and some include butler service.

Saga Cruises often includes enrichment programs and activities, including lectures, workshops, and cultural experiences onboard and during shore excursions.  Passengers can enjoy amenities like spas, fitness centers, live music performances, and theaters, ensuring a well-rounded and enjoyable cruise experience.

Minimum Age: 50 (to book), 40 (companion)

Grand Circle

M/S Bizet

Grand Circle Cruises also specializes in cruises for passengers over fifty, although they allow kids over thirteen to join, and they claim that there are long bus sightseeing tours that younger travelers may not enjoy. They operate a fleet of small ships, offering intimate and immersive experiences that larger vessels cannot provide. Their itineraries span regions worldwide, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America, often focusing on off-the-beaten-path destinations and cultural immersion.

Grand Circle has a high crew-to-passenger ratio to ensure individual attention and a comfortable experience. The ships in their fleet carry only 86-162 passengers, are privately owned, and every cabin has an outside window. Rooms are basic yet comfortable and provide all you need for your voyage. Grand Circle is the perfect cruise line for solo travelers – they have a roommate matching program, where you will be matched up with another solo traveler to room with, and, don’t worry, if they can’t find the perfect roommate for you, they will cover your single supplement fee.

While you may not find the extravagant entertainment there is on bigger cruises, they encourage socializing with other guests and occasionally have local musicians on board to entertain in the evenings. You’ll have the privilege of a local program director who will accompany you off shore and bring you to the top attractions of your destination.

Minimum Age: 13

French Riviera Botanical Garden

The only thing better than strolling into Paris as the Eiffel Tower lights up at night? Sitting down for a meal of fresh-caught seafood as the sun sets into the harbor of aptly-named Nice. France has got something for every traveler, which is why so many cruises to Europe dock here.

Spain Barcelona Sagrada Familia

Sitting down for Spanish tapas is one of the most satisfying food experiences in the world, especially when you wash it down with fruity sangria. Plus, the Jurassic topography of the Canary Islands and the storied streets of Barcelona are just a few of the best places to visit in Europe you'll find here.

Lisbon, Portugal, Pena National Palace

Portugal is where many of the first expeditions to the New World start, but most people on European cruises bound for Lisbon wonder why anyone would leave. Explore the mysterious Quinta de Regaleira castle in Sintra, pour port wine in Porto or practice your surfing skills in the Algarve.

Rotterdam, Netherlands, Oude Haven Harbor

You can feel warmth in your heart no matter the temperature outside, and the northwestern reaches of Europe illustrate this beautifully. Join the best European cruises through the British Isles and along the coast of the Netherlands, where enchanted country charm and royal, old-world cities offer endless possibilities for memories that will last a lifetime.

Amsterdam, Netherlands Tulip Field

The Dutch have managed to keep the sea at bay for hundreds of years, but many of the best European cruises still make their way into Amsterdam . If you tire of the tranquility you find amid tulip fields and beneath towering windmills, make your way to the hipster capital of Rotterdam.

Ireland Rock of Cashel

Life is but a dream in Ireland , whether you down a pint of Guinness and trace tales told by James Joyce in Dublin, or careen along the Cliffs of Moher along the west coast. Many cruises to Europe also stop in Northern Ireland's Belfast, a city that's a testament to rebirth and reconciliation.

Cityscape in Glasgow, Scotland

When you visit Scotland, it can be difficult to discern legend from real life. Strolling down Edinburgh's Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle might feel like a dream, while the fabled and mythical Loch Ness may surprise you with its charm and stunning scenery. Scotland's one of the best places to visit in Europe, period.

Iceland is an unbelievable wonderland where scenes like this one of Kirkjufell mountain abound.

Scandinavia  is dark for much of the year, but light is what defines its polar nations, from the Midnight Sun that rises high above Demark in mid-summer, to the skies above Norway and Iceland amid winter's deepest freeze. Find endless possibilities and the best European cruises along the Baltic, from the savory seafood eateries of Oslo, to the cold cityscape of Reykjavik.

Copenhagen, Denmark Nyhavn Pier Sunset

Many of the best European cruises dock in Denmark, and it's no wonder why. From colorful Nyhavn harbor in Copenhagen to storied castles like Amalienborg and Frederiksborg, Denmark more than makes up for the fact that its more famous neighbors often eclipse it.

Iceland Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa

It's easy to be intrigued by Iceland , whether you walk through Reykjavik's riveting Hallgrimskirkja church, or visit “the Wash Road”, the hippest shopping district in the city. There are few better ways to cap off cruises to Europe than a dip in the aptly-named Blue Lagoon.

Norway, Stavanger Majestic Cliff

Norway is a country in beautiful balance. Had enough of the orderliness of Oslo? Head west to beautiful Bergen, where finger-shaped fjords jut into and out of thousands of miles of coastline. Or contrast a fresh fish dinner at sea level with the view from towering Trolltunga cliff.

Europe is beautiful in every season, but the peak of comfortable weather (especially in the north) is between May and September.

You should always be prepared for rain and colder weather when you travel to Europe, especially in the North. Dress in light layers for your vacation.

Europeans speak more English the farther north you go. Your phone's translation app (or, at minimum, learning how to say "Hello" and "Thank You" in local languages) will aid you along the Mediterranean.

Learn more about Baltic ports like Klaipeda, Lithuania and Tallinn, Estonia, or read up on Bergen, the gateway to Norway's stunning fjords. The Mediterranean provides many options but start by exploring Malaga on Spain's Costa del Sol or the exciting Monte Carlo, Monaco. The most popular ports in the British Isles are Edinburgh in Scotland and the cities of Belfast and Dublin in Ireland. No matter what you like, you will find your favourite European cruise.

Adults-only cruises offer a unique escape for travelers seeking a sophisticated and relaxed voyage across the world’s oceans. Far from the clamor of amusement parks and crowded beaches, these voyages cater exclusively to adults, providing an ambiance of elegance, tranquility, and indulgence.

Here are some of the best adults-only cruises:

  • Virgin Voyages – Virgin Voyages offers cruises exclusively for adults aged 18 and older. They have a range of destinations and onboard entertainment tailored for an adult audience.
  • Saga Cruises – Saga Cruises is a British cruise line that specializes in providing luxury experiences tailored specifically for passengers aged 50 and older.

We’ll explore why selective travelers opt for these voyages, the popular destinations they visit, the lavish amenities they relish, and the distinctive experiences that distinguish them from traditional cruises.

Benefits of Adults-Only Cruises

Adults-only cruises offer a range of benefits tailored to the preferences of mature travelers.

Peaceful Atmosphere

With no small children on board, adults can enjoy a serene and tranquil environment, perfect for relaxation and unwinding.

Sophisticated Experience

These cruises often cater to a more refined audience, providing upscale amenities, gourmet dining options, and elegant entertainment tailored to adult tastes.

Exclusive Activities

From wine tastings and cocktail classes to spa treatments and fitness programs, adults-only cruises offer a variety of tailored activities designed for adult enjoyment.

Relaxation and Rejuvenation

Adults can indulge in uninterrupted relaxation by the pool, luxurious spa treatments, or quiet moments on deck without the distractions of children.

Social Opportunities

With fellow passengers sharing similar interests and lifestyles, adults-only cruises provide opportunities to connect and socialize with like-minded individuals in a sophisticated setting.

Flexible Schedule

Adults can enjoy a more flexible schedule without the need to accommodate family-friendly activities, allowing for a more personalized and leisurely cruise experience.

How to Choose an Adults-Only Cruise

Choosing an adults-only cruise involves considering several factors to ensure you find the perfect fit for your preferences and interests.

Research Cruise Lines

Start by researching cruise lines that offer adults-only sailings. Look for reputable cruise lines known for their adult-oriented experiences.

Consider the destinations you want to visit. Look for cruises that align with your preferred itinerary, whether it’s exploring tropical islands, historic European cities, or scenic coastal regions.

Cruise Length and Itinerary

Decide on the duration of your cruise and the specific ports of call you want to visit. Some adult-only cruises offer shorter getaway cruises, while others provide longer voyages to exotic destinations.

Ship Amenities

Research the amenities offered on board the cruise ship. Consider factors such as dining options, entertainment venues, spa facilities, fitness centers, and recreational activities to ensure they align with your interests and preferences.

Cabin Options

Explore the different cabin categories available on the cruise ship. Decide whether you prefer a standard cabin, a suite with additional space and luxury amenities, or a stateroom with a balcony for private outdoor relaxation.

Adult-Oriented Activities

Look for cruises that offer adult-oriented activities and entertainment. This may include wine tastings, mixology classes, live music performances, dance parties, and enrichment lectures tailored for adult travelers.

Reviews and Recommendations

Read reviews and testimonials from past passengers who have experienced adult-only cruises. Pay attention to their feedback on the overall ambiance, service quality, dining options, and entertainment offerings.

Booking Options

Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, contact the cruise line or a reputable travel agent to book your cruise. Consider any special promotions or discounts available, especially if you’re flexible with your travel dates.

Wellness at sea

Expect a Virgin-style makeover to cruise spa and fitness programming. Whether Sailors are into high-intensity workouts, deep breaths in search of nirvana, or if they pay for a gym membership but never use it – Virgin Voyages provide spaces to care for themselves in whichever way works best for them.

Why cruise with Virgin Voyages?

Not wanting to get shipped off with a boat-load of children? While we cater for the young at heart, Virgin Voyages offer strictly adult-only cruises. Sure, the little ones would probably love life at sea, but we want you to discover your inner child – not have to look after one.

The cabins on Virgin Voyages Lady Ships stand out for their flexible furnishings, upgraded bathrooms, and sensory mood lighting, creating comfy quarters that are way more than just a place to crash. Award-winning Walter Knoll, who’s designed thoughtful and sustainable furniture for over 150 years, is responsible for specially engineering and handcrafting our transformative Seabed in Germany. Sailors can enjoy their cabin in two distinct ways, as a place to revel or a place to relax.  A luxurious loungey space transforms into an expansive bedroom with a queen size bed in one swift movement. The transformation can be executed by the sailor or by one of our crew.

Booking any suite unlocks access to Richard's Rooftop; an exclusive sun deck where elegance meets exuberance. A lavish, elaborate and members-only outdoor space for RockStar Quarters Sailors to bask under the sun or have a drink under the stars. Think VIP Rockstar service, chilled vibes, cool tunes, sophisticated loungers and being surrounded by dichroic glass casting stunning rainbow reflections through the rooftop.

If you thought cruise food was buffets and queues – think again. Virgin Voyages have ditched buffets and pre-set dining times to bring Sailors made-to-order food and leisurely brunches from 20+ unique eateries. All the food is  included  - meaning no exclusive spots you have to pay to get into.  From Korean BBQ, pizza shops, Mediterranean mezze and Mexican restaurants through to a legendary drag queen brunch, Virgin Voyages’ 24-hour food and beverage service is always made to order with a wide selection of restaurants and dining.

No more single-use plastics is just the start of Virgin Voyages’ commitment to sustainable sailing. Newly-built, state-of-the-art and eco-friendly cruise ships use cutting-edge technology so you can concentrate on leaving your footprints in the sand and not on the planet.

Still not impressed? Virgin Voyages use Azipod propulsion technology to reduce fuel consumption by 15 per cent and has partnered with Swedish cleantech experts, Climeon, to convert heat from ship engines back into electricity, helping reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

To complement artist Toby Tinsley’s revolutionary ship design, Virgin Voyages partnered with world-renowned interior designer Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio; New York’s Roman and Williams (The Ace Hotel and the Standard Highline); Concrete Amsterdam (Citizen M and Hotel Zoku), and Softroom in London to reimagine the modern luxury cruise experience.

From the VIP rooftop, club lounge and sky rooms, which use dichroic rainbow-effect glass, through to the world’s first onboard tattoo parlour – Virgin Voyages ships boast theatrical spaces with a sense of drama and fun throughout.

The ‘Vitamin Sea’ ethos not only focuses on the wellbeing of the ocean but also that of its sailors. With a selection of onboard programmes, including sunrise and sunset yoga sessions, you’ll find more than enough things to help you detox (and retox).

If the idea of letting those abs go without a plank for a few days is enough to make you walk one, take a step inside Athletic Club. Resembling a 1920s New York sports club, sailors can hit the outdoor training zone, boxing ring and gym, or head outside to set PBs on The Runway running track.

Not quite your idea of relaxation? No problem. Redemption, the ship’s spa, will transport you to an underwater cave complete hydrotherapy pool, mud room, salt room, cold plunge pools, quartz beds and rejuvenating treatments.

From the glamourous Wake restaurant, with its high-end surf ‘n’ turf, through to Razzle Dazzle, the vegan/vegetarian restaurant and juice bar - with over 20 restaurant and dining options on board, Virgin Voyages ships cater for all tastes.

If you’re wanting to brush up on your culinary classics, The Test Kitchen is one not to miss. Foodies will love the cooking classes, mixology school and coffee labs – not to mention midnight feasts and late-night lock ins!

For a more chilled beach-club vibe, check out The Dock, serving Mediterranean small plates, salads, dips and mezzes or head to The Galley, modelled on food halls and featuring shops and food carts.

As the sun sets, you’ll probably be looking for something livelier to keep you entertained into the small hours. Signature nightclub The Manor takes inspiration from one of our original Virgin Music recording studios – make sure to pack your dancing shoes.

Finally, what better way to commemorate your time on board than by heading to Squid Ink, where tattoo artist Lou Rubino Jr has hand-picked two resident tattooists to make sure those memories never fade.

Virgin Atlantic Holidays is the only place where you can book the full Virgin Voyages package – Virgin Atlantic flights, hotels and your Virgin Voyage cruise – all in one place.

I Went On An Adults-Only Cruise & Trust Me, You’ve Been Judging Them Wrong

european cruises adults only

Chantelle Schmidt

But should you spend your annual leave on one?

With the nine-month Ultimate World Cruise delivering TikTok gold and Sir Richard Branson recently bringing his adults-only cruise ships to the world with Virgin Voyages, I’m slowly starting to believe that we don’t need grandchildren to jump on one. It’s sparked a deeper curiosity I’ve had about cruises as a holiday and after going on Virgin Voyages in Europe , I’m convinced that adults-only cruises are a good getaway option for the lazy (or demanding) traveller. Here’s why.

virgin voyages adults-only cruise

1. There’s As Much Alone Time & Together Time As You Want

I sadly can’t stand any travel companion (platonic, romantic or blood-related) for longer than three days, uninterrupted, at a time — I need my space if I don’t want to turn into a raging asshole. But that’s where this adults-only cruise really opened by eyes.

If you’ve seen the size of commonly booked cruise ship cabins, you’ll know that you’ll need to play music while pooing if you’re sharing a room. It’s close quarters but unlike a teeny Airbnb in Europe , you’ve got an entire ship to do your business, whether that’s on the toilet or otherwise.

adults only cruise

There are toilets everywhere, but on a cruise ship you can also go to a bunch of other places on board like games rooms (I’m a slut for Tetris), restaurants, cafes, chill areas, pools, spas and more things that I can’t list because it would exceed my word count.

virgin voyages game room

Cruise ship aside, if your journey has a disembark destination — and pretty much all of them do — you can also get space from each other while off the boat too.

Do you want to explore Lokrum while your travel partner wants to do Dubrovnik’s city walls? Not a drama.

2. You Don’t Have To Plan (As Much) On An Adults-Only Cruise

I can’t tell you the amount of holiday conversations I’ve had that never turned into a reality because of the planning involved. Conversations about flights, transport, budget and more can turn anyone’s holiday stiffy limp.

It’s not uncommon for someone in the travel group to have a million questions before booking like, “But where will we have lunch on Day 3?”, or who says things like, “I don’t want to change accommodation more than once throughout the trip.” You know the ones.

adults only cruise

You’re going to have to figure out how to get to and from the port that the ship leaves from, sure.

But an adults-only cruise takes away a lot of the organisational brainwork in between embarking and disembarking (like where to stay that’ll be near such-and-such attractions, but also cheap enough to not blow your life savings — I should go to jail for the amount of time I spend on

That means there’ll be more time bonding or chilling the fuck out, which is the type of holidayer a lot of people are .

3. Your Itinerary’s As Sorted Or As Flex As You Like

One thing that baffles me about an adults-only cruise ship is the entertainment options, from fitness to wellness, theatre, dance, art and more.

One night I was having dinner with a side of trivia and a show and the next morning I was doing a bungee class overlooking the sea (funniest exercise class I’ve ever done, highly recommend). That afternoon? I was getting my back knots kneaded out of me in the spa.

adults only cruise

While the options for food and activities are less than if you were staying overnight in a city rather than sea, there’s still a shitload of things to entertain everyone and keep everyone happy without all hell breaking loose over deciding where to go for dinner.

4. There’s No Dramas Dividing Costs

The good thing about cruises is there’s a set price that includes meals, accommodation, activities, soft drinks and more while on board, which heavily reduces one of the biggest bugbears of travel: dividing costs.

There’s something to be said about activities that are included in your booking price. You know when you’re on holiday and everyone ummms and ahhhs about a bike ride or winery because of the cost? Not an issue at sea.

european cruises adults only

Your Splitwise account can also take a breather. For the things that aren’t included in the “ticket” per se, like grog, each passenger (for the Virgin Voyages ship, at least) has an armband that is like an electronic tab. If you grab someone a drink from the bar and use your armband, you still allocate that cost to them in the app too.

Don’t worry, you can make sure you haven’t gone too wild in the app, which tracks all your transactions as you go.

The Adults-Only Cruise Verdict

If there’s one thing that spoke to me during this adults-only cruise it was how convenient and hassle-free it was compared to other holidays I’ve been on.

I went smack bang in the middle of a bigger European trip, and having a break from the logistical nightmare of a trip — whether that’s getting your suitcase up a long flight of stairs every second night or spending 10 hours at the airport a week — made the cruise feel like a holiday away from the holiday.

european cruises adults only

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with an adults-only cruise, especially when it came to people within my age group. I was pleasantly surprised at how many people were in their 20s and 30s were on board.

Of course, every cruise is going to attract an older generation of people who have really made a lifestyle out of it — adults-only or not — this one was at least a step in the right direction with zero screaming children and a ship that’s designed to please all 18+ age groups.

Everyone on board is at least young at heart and has one thing in common: they don’t want to be around kids, whether it’s theirs or someone else’s.

If I’m completely honest, I wish I’d stopped being so judgey about cruises earlier.

  • Disney cruises offer the perfect getaway for adults without children.
  • From animation classes and private islands to Broadway-style shows, I never run out of things to do.

After taking over 15 cruises on most of the major lines , one stands out as my favorite company to travel with — Disney Cruise Line. Disney cruises combine what I love about the theme parks with relaxation and stellar dining, making them the perfect getaway.

I also love that Disney continues to invest in its cruise line. For example, the company's newest ship, Disney Treasure , plans to embark on its maiden voyage in December.

And next year, Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure will set sail for the first time. The company also invested between $250 million and $400 million in a new island in the Bahamas, which I was lucky enough to visit.

Although some may think of Disney Cruise Line as a company that caters to kids, I've had an incredible time on adults-only vacations with my sister, mother, friends, and husband. Here's why I think Disney cruises are the perfect choice for travelers without children.

I’m never bored on a Disney ship.

Disney Cruise Line is the perfect adults-only vacation, and I can't wait to plan another trip.

As a big fan of the parks, Disney Cruise Line takes those magical elements and upgrades them at sea with incredible food, live entertainment, and relaxation — making for the perfect adults-only vacation.

Its ships are home to some of the most exciting, highly themed lounge options I've encountered, and I love the Broadway-quality productions. While on board, I'm able to do as much or as little as I want.

Four European Nations Agree to Jointly Develop Long-Range Cruise Missiles

By Sabine Siebold and John Irish

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - France, Germany, Italy and Poland signed a letter of intent on Thursday to develop ground-launched cruise missiles with a range beyond 500 km (310 miles), aiming to fill what they say is a gap in European arsenals exposed by Russia's war in Ukraine.

Speaking on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington after the signing ceremony, French Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu said the new missile was meant to serve as a deterrent.

"The idea is to open it up as widely as possible," he told reporters, and suggested Britain's new Labour government could join. "It has value, including on a budgetary level, because it obviously also allows the various costs to be amortized."

A first draft of the weapon might be sketched out by the end of the year, he said, with the specifications such as the range to be worked out in more detail later.

He was speaking one day after Washington and Berlin announced they would begin deploying U.S. long-range missiles on German soil in 2026, including the SM-6, Tomahawks and developmental hypersonic weapons.

The deployment, condemned by Moscow as a "very serious threat" to Russian national security, is seen as a stop-gap solution until Europe has its own long-range missiles ready.

Cruise missiles with a range of several hundred km have had a revival since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with Moscow launching cross-border strikes and Kyiv hitting back at targets in Russian territory.

Europe's existing stocks of cruise missiles include weapons launched by fighter jets, such as Britain's Storm Shadow, France's Scalp and Germany's Taurus with a range of some 500 km.

Unlike ballistic missiles, cruise missiles fly low, making them harder to detect by radar.

A military source said the aim was for the new ground-based missile to have a range of 1,000 to 2,000 km to meet NATO demands for such a capability.

Paris has suggested basing the weapon on a modification of its existing naval cruise missile MdCN (Missile de Croisiere Naval), made by European defence company MBDA that also produces Taurus, Storm Shadow and Scalp.

MBDA, owned by Franco-German Airbus, British BAE Systems and Italian Leonardo, has been working on the development of an MdCN modification that could be fired from truck-mounted rocket launchers.

The development of a missile with a range exceeding 500 km means European NATO allies will in effect reintroduce a category of weapons banned under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty until 2019.

The INF treaty signed in 1987 outlawed nuclear and conventional ground-launched missiles with a range between 500 and 5,500 km. It eliminated a whole category of weapons.

Germany, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic also destroyed their missiles in the 1990s, followed later by Slovakia and Bulgaria.

The U.S. quit the INF Treaty in 2019, saying Moscow was violating the accord, citing Russia's development of the 9M729 ground-launched cruise missile, known in NATO as the SSC-8. Russia denied the accusation and imposed a moratorium on its own development of missiles previously banned by the INF treaty.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said last month Moscow should resume production of intermediate and shorter range nuclear-capable missiles after the U.S. brought similar missiles to Europe and Asia.

Virgin Voyages announces the return of The Halloween Voyages: No Kids. Just Treats.

Virgin voyages’ blowout spooky szn celebration returns in 2024 — with double the tricks and triple the treats..

Let’s not waste time: The Halloween Voyages: No Kids. Just Treats are back, and your Sailors are invited. They’re invited to ditch the land (and the kids). They’re invited to avoid the panicked grocery store trips for bags of sucrose. And they’re invited to focus on enjoying themselves in an adults-only environment. Sailors don’t have to choose between their dream destination and a thrilling Halloween party — we’re launching this thing into all the regions we sail in. The Halloween festivities will be on Scarlet Lady’s October 24th voyage (Ancient Aegean to the Modern Med), Resilient Lady’s October 27th voyage (Spain & Morocco to Miami), and all of Valiant Lady’s voyages during the month of October.

A quick internet search will show you that Sailors loved the 2023 edition of our Halloween voyages; we were especially flattered to learn that they think we “went all out” for them. But we say to those Sailors, with all due respect: you ain’t seen nothing yet.

In 2024, The Halloween Voyages: No Kids. Just Treats will feature blowout shipwide decorations, food and drink options exclusive to these sailings, and Halloween editions of our Festival Stage Acts. There’s a costume contest, with high-value prizes given out to folks who elevate their looks in the categories of DIY Genius, Best Dressed, and Group Ensemble. We’re doing all our grog walks, trivia, crafts, and events with a spooky twist, plus a Scarlet (Fright) Night that turns our signature fleet-wide party into a Halloween extravaganza (it was too tempting — we already had the fog machine). Sailors on Valiant Lady can even expect a custom show from the Happenings cast and a themed band playing throughout the voyage.

Wherever your Sailors are headed, they won’t regret spending Halloween with us. And again, to the internet users leaving lovely comments like, “a great time had by all” or “it’s the best cruise I’ve been on” — respectfully, come back to sea so we can blow your socks off with the 2024 edition.

Here’s to spooky sailing.
