Whitney Houston played her first UK gig in 11 years tonight as the British leg of her world tour belatedly got under way.

The 46-year-old American diva took to the stage in Birmingham, performing to a sell-out crowd.

The singer was forced to temporarily put off three concerts at the start of the UK leg of the tour while she recovered from an infection.

She was diagnosed by doctors in Paris with an upper respiratory infection last week.

Dressed in tight white trousers and a metallic white jacket, she told the crowd: "I'm feeling pretty good myself, thank you so much for asking."

The two-hour show at Birmingham's LG Arena passed without any major dramas, despite fans becoming restless when the star's mid-show outfit change left them waiting for around 15 minutes.

On returning to the stage she joked: "I could hear you getting p***** off".

An early microphone malfunction threatened to throw Houston off pace during her second song, but a technician rushed on stage with a replacement and the singer laughed off the hiccup, telling the crowd: "My head mic broke... but I always have a spare."

At one point the star, who was due to start her UK tour in Manchester last Thursday, took a programme from a fan in the audience and signed it.

She told her fans: "Thank you so much for your love, your support and your loyalty," adding: "I have nothing but love for you. Thank you so very much."

Houston had earlier shrugged off suggestions that she could be on a downward spiral due to drugs, branding speculation "ridiculous".

Speaking as she entered the UK earlier last week, she said: "I'm feeling great, I'm just ready to move on and continue my world tour."

She added: "At this point, I just don't respond. I don't even read it.

"I'm doing what I love to do, which is singing.

"The best part is seeing all of my fans around the world."

The singer, who has sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos, has been dogged by ill-health while attempting her big comeback.

Houston had been on a hiatus from music as she battled drug addiction and ended a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

But with her new album I Look To You, she has been riding high once more and has declared herself healthy and free from substance abuse.

Two songs from the new album opened the show, followed by hits including I Will Always Love You, and It's Not Right (But it's OK), which she described as "an oldie but a goodie".

A Glasgow concert which had been scheduled for Sunday has been rearranged for May 1, while last week's Manchester dates will take place at the end of the tour on June 16 and 17.

I Look To You became her fastest-selling album in the UK, and has already shifted more than 2.5 million copies.

Concert promoters Marshall Arts have asked ticketholders for the Manchester and Glasgow performances to retain their tickets, which will remain valid.

Organisers said those unable to make the rescheduled shows should apply to their point of ticket purchase for a refund.

They added that all other dates on Houston's Nothing But Love World Tour 2010 will be unaffected.

The 25 best Whitney Houston songs, from deep cuts to chart-toppers

As the Voice's legacy lives on, so does her catalog.

whitney houston first uk tour

Whitney Houston/YouTube

We will always love the Prom Queen of Soul. One of the most-awarded female artists ever — with more than 400 accolades, including six Grammys — Whitney Houston 's acclaim stems not only from possessing one of the most singular, spectacular voices in pop music history but also from cultivating an expansive and high-quality discography. From her debut in 1984 to her death at age 48 on Feb. 11, 2012, the New Jersey-born singer recorded 200-plus songs, leaving behind decades-worth of high notes that still resonate with her fans and future generations (proved by her status as the highest-paid dead female celebrity , as of 2023).

From deep cuts like "One of Those Days" to ageless numbers such as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," here are the 25 best Whitney Houston songs.

25. "When You Believe" (1998)

TIMOTHY A. CLARY/AFP via Getty

While not exactly cross-generational (only seven years separate them), this duet between Houston and Mariah Carey from the animated film The Prince of Egypt felt like the passing of a torch. The movie (and the song) weren't particularly memorable — though Ariana Grande and Cynthia Ervio may argue otherwise, as the Wicked costars performed the duet at the 2024 Met Gala — but "When You Believe" is noteworthy merely for bringing together two of the most head-spinning vocal talents pop music has ever known.

24. "Same Script, Different Cast" (2000)

Chris Haston/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty

This song is as if the "boy" from the Brandy and Monica duet "The Boy Is Mine" grew up into a cad, burned Whitney, and took up with Deborah Cox. And girlfriend is pissed : "Enjoy it now 'cause it won't last/Same script, different cast," Whitney purrs.

Fun fact No. 1: "Same Script, Different Cast" samples the third song that everybody who's ever taken piano lessons learned to play — Beethoven's "Für Elise." Fun fact No. 2: It spawned a host of dance remixes; the "Victor Romeo Slang Vocal Mix" is required treadmill listening.

23. "All the Man That I Need" (1990)

Houston took what had been a minor R&B hit for Sister Sledge and turned it into yet another No. 1. Her celebration of finding a love that didn't have "to hurt to turn out right" gave hope to forlorn singletons everywhere.

22. "All at Once" (1986)

Over a quiet keyboard line, Houston mourns a relationship that is finally irrevocably over.

21. "Saving All My Love for You" (1985)

Houston's guy has other priorities — and a wife. She knows she shouldn't be last on his list, but she swears she'll wait for him to leave his lady, 'cause he's worth it. The stuff that's been piped into thousands of dentist offices, was also her first No. 1 hit.

20. "Love Will Save the Day" (1988)

Graham Wiltshire/Getty

Though the single broke her streak of consecutive No. 1's, the Miami bass and spicy horns on this high-BPM dance-pop workout pointed to Houston's willingness to experiment and evolve.

19. "One of Those Days" (2002)

An underrated single off an underrated album. Houston gave her listeners an instruction manual for pampering themselves in the Sex and the City era: "Light the candles, aromatherapy/Hot tub bubbles surrounding me/Mr. Big is in the background/ The Isley Brothers gonna hold it down." Not so coincidentally, the Isley Brothers' iconic 1983 jam "Between the Sheets" provided the song's backbone.

18. "I'm Your Baby Tonight" (1990)

Houston greeted the new decade by changing her sound. Producers Kenneth " Babyface " Edmonds and L.A. Reid prodded her in a grittier, more street-oriented direction, but even in that altered (and frankly, less vocally demanding) setting, her voice remained a technical marvel.

17. "Million Dollar Bill" (2009)

It failed to catch fire on the mainstream charts, but the Alicia Keys -co-penned single from Houston's final studio album was a sweetly saucy celebration of feeling like hot currency in the right relationship, with a thrumming bassline and a climbing "oh whoa whoa" chorus.

16. "Didn't We Almost Have It All" (1987)

So transformative was Houston's voice that she was able to make lite-FM ballads like this one sound effortlessly rich and melancholic, and send them directly to the top of the Hot 100.

15. "It's Not Right but It's Okay" (1999)

The anthem for anyone done wrong by a two-timing man. Is he forgiven? He is not. But will they move on, and eventually triumph? You bet your cheating, no-good heart. Just make sure you leave your keys by the door on your way out.

14. "One Moment in Time" (1988)

The 1988 Seoul Olympics needed an anthem, and Houston rose to meet the challenge with this majestic carpe diem chest-thumper. The song — a staple of sports montages — yielded one of Houston's all-time best performances at the 1989 Grammys ceremony.

13. "Step by Step" (1997)

The Preacher's Wife 1996 remake wasn't a masterpiece, but for gospel lovers, its soundtrack was: It became the best-selling gospel album of all time, moving some 6 million copies. And its Annie Lennox -penned second single — an ode to not biting off more than you can chew, set to a churchy dance beat — peaked at a respectable No. 15 on the pop charts.

12. "Greatest Love of All" (1986)

Sure, the production is dated — oh, those tinkly Casio chords! — but her inspirational ballad was an adult-contemporary touchstone for a reason, and even inspired an especially memorable monologue from Christian Bale 's yuppie sociopath in the 2000 film American Psycho .

11. "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" (1988)

"Where Do Broken Hearts Go" actually went to a lot of places — including the top of Billboard 's Hot 100. This searching ballad made Houston the first artist to land seven straight No. 1 songs: an astonishing record that still stands.

10. "You Give Good Love" (1985)

This pretty bedroom ballad — the first big single from her debut — proved that soulful R&B and Top 40 pop can be hard to tell apart when the lights are off.

9. "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" (1995)

Perhaps knowing that it would be unjustly compared with the mammoth Bodyguard soundtrack, Houston was determined not to record new songs for Waiting to Exhale . But producer Babyface persuaded her to lend her voice to this warm, simple groove. And wisely: "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" became only the third single in history at the time to debut atop the Billboard Hot 100.

8. "I'm Every Woman" (1993)

Houston took the Chaka Khan original out of the disco era and transported it into early-'90s R&B funkland. It wasn't the biggest hit off the album — there was that Dolly Parton cover you may have heard of — but it's the most irresistible. By the time the last chorus kicks in, even the most Y-chromosome-laden among us were name-checking Chaka and singing along.

7. "I Have Nothing" (1993)

This steadily escalating stunner put the "power" in power ballad, allowing all of Houston's lyrical self-doubt and pathos to erupt into sonic tidal waves of goosebump-worthy bombast.

6. "So Emotional" (1987)

"I don't know why I like it/I just do," Houston giggles at the top of this giddy confession of a first-blush crush, which illuminated a naughtier, more rollicking side of the sweet-faced starlet. Ain't it shocking what love can do?

“So Emotional” circled back into popularity in a big way 30 years later with a huge bump in Spotify streams after Sasha Velour iconically lip-synced to it  on the season 9 finale of  RuPaul’s Drag Race , culminating in an outpouring of rose petals from under her wig.

5. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" (1987)

A spirited descendant of "How Will I Know," this triumphant summer single met the gold standard of '80s pop, inspiring TIME magazine to crown her "The Prom Queen of Soul." And the music video, showcasing a shimmying, bow-bedecked Houston who just wanted to have some fun and "feel the heat with somebody," became an indelible clip of the era.

4. "My Love Is Your Love" (1999)

Many had already written off Houston as past her career prime when she released My Love Is Your Love , her first studio album in eight years. But this gorgeously syncopated soul-pop lullaby — featuring a sweet cameo ("Sing, Mommy") from her then-toddler daughter, Bobbi Kristina — rightfully went on to become her third-most-successful single ever, and redefined her for a younger generation.

3. "How Will I Know" (1985)

While it was first offered to Janet Jackson , the fifth single off Houston's debut album ended up being exactly the sort of buoyantly dancey hit — hey there, sax solo! — that the young woman until then known primarily for stately ballads needed to be a true pop crossover star. And if you haven't heard the remarkable vocals-only version , go listen right now. No really, go. We'll wait for you.

2. "The Star-Spangled Banner" (1991)

Michael Zagaris/Getty

Perhaps the most iconic, chills-inducing version of the national anthem ever rendered, it was also the only one to chart as a top 20 hit...twice. Her powerhouse performance at Super Bowl XXV stirred the patriotism of a country in the midst of the Gulf War, and did so again in the wake of 9/11; in both cases, Houston donated her share of profits from the song to those serving in the armed forces.

1. "I Will Always Love You" (1992)

The song that went on to become a defining highlight of Houston's career almost never happened at all. Originally, the then 28-year-old was slated to cover Jimmy Ruffin's early Motown hit "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" for the soundtrack of The Bodyguard , in which she also had her first major film role. It was her costar, Kevin Costner , who suggested she take on Dolly Parton's plaintive 1974 country ballad instead. (Against the record company's wishes, Houston and Costner fought to keep the extended a cappella intro, and won.) Her gospel-tinged reworking of the song — a towering showcase for the singer's phenomenal three-octave range — was an immediate global smash, topping the charts in 16 countries, and spending a record-shattering 14 weeks at No. 1 in the U.S.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Tortured Poets Department’ Has Smashed These Records With Its Months-Long Run At No. 1—Here’s How

Taylor Swift’s dominant run at No. 1 with “The Tortured Poets Department” is shattering records and could soon become the album with the most consecutive weeks at No. 1 since its debut, thanks to a lengthy album rollout with a strong performance on streaming, as well as numerous collectible CDs and digital versions that have helped Swift beat back any competition and maintain the top spot.

“The Tortured Poets Department” is No. 1 for an eleventh straight week on this week’s Billboard 200 albums chart, aided by a 27% surge in sales thanks to shipments of two limited edition CDs that each contained an exclusive bonus track, Billboard reported .

The album’s eleventh week at the top ties it with “Fearless” and “1989” to become Swift’s longest-running No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, a record it may very well break next week.

To support what could be the album’s twelfth week at No. 1, Swift released limited-edition signed CDs on her online store, which quickly sold out.

Swift’s team, Taylor Nation, also posted on X it had restocked a collector’s edition of “The Tortured Poets Department” and reposted some fans who said they had completed their collections.

“The Tortured Poets Department” was an immediate commercial success, moving more than 2.6 million album-equivalent units—made up of sales and streams of individual tracks—in its first week of availability in April, becoming Swift’s biggest debut and the biggest for an album on the Billboard charts since Adele’s “25” in 2015.

How Dominant Is “the Tortured Poets Department” On Streaming?

The album smashed plenty of streaming records upon its debut, becoming the first album to surpass 300 million streams on Spotify in a single day, with hit song “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone becoming the platform’s most-streamed song in a single day. Fifteen out of the album’s 16 songs have more than 100 million streams on Spotify, and three months after release, the album ranks No. 2 on Spotify’s weekly albums chart .

How Has Swift Boosted Her Album Sales?

In the weeks since the album’s massive start, Swift has supported the album’s chart performance with various collectible and digital editions, which have boosted the album’s sales. For the album’s ninth week at No. 1 in June, Billboard reported Swift’s sales jumped 42% because of two CD variants that each contained an exclusive bonus track. Throughout May and June, Swift dropped new CDs or digital versions of the album on a near-weekly basis, with each new version accompanied by bonus tracks—often acoustic renditions of one of the album’s songs, a “first draft phone memo” demo version of a song or a live performance from one of her Eras Tour shows. She released the album with an acoustic version of “But Daddy I Love Him” on May 8, followed by three versions with three different “phone memo” tracks on May 16, three versions with three live tracks on May 23, two new versions with two acoustic tracks on June 1, another two versions with another two acoustic tracks on June 10, as well as several UK-exclusive digital albums on June 13. Several of these album drops roiled fans of other artists, including Billie Eilish —who is typically a streaming and sales force—and Charli XCX , whose albums were blocked from topping the charts amid Swift’s dominance with “The Tortured Poets Department.” Swift has also fended off the album debuts of Dua Lipa, Megan Thee Stallion, Bon Jovi, Gunna and more.

What Chart Records Has Swift Broken?

Swift's months-long reign atop the Billboard 200 has cemented it among the longest-ever runs at No. 1 for an album following its debut—and it could be just two weeks away from the most consecutive weeks at No. 1 for an album since its debut. This week, “The Tortured Poets Department” became one of just three albums to spend its first 11 weeks at No. 1, joining Morgan Wallen’s “One Thing at a Time,” which spent its first 12 weeks at No. 1, and Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in the Key of Life,” which topped the Billboard 200 for its first 13 weeks in 1976. Swift tied Whitney Houston’s album “Whitney” this week for the most consecutive weeks at No. 1 for an album following its debut by a female artist. Swift also extends her record as the soloist with the most weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 across all albums, with 80 weeks total, placing her only behind the Beatles, who have logged 132 weeks at No. 1, a full year’s worth of No. 1 placements ahead of Swift. “The Tortured Poets Department” is the album with the third-most weeks at No. 1 this decade, just two behind Bad Bunny’s “Un Verano Sin Ti” and six weeks behind Wallen’s “One Thing at a Time.” With its eleventh week at No. 1, “The Tortured Poets Department” surpassed SZA’s “SOS” to become the album by a female artist with the most weeks at No. 1 in the 2020s.

Surprising Fact

Though Swift’s bonus-track album releases have been associated with the chart success of “The Tortured Poets Department,” streaming made up the majority of the album’s performance on the Billboard charts every week except for the album’s debut week and its fifth week, during which Swift’s album topped Eilish’s debut week on the chart. That week, Billboard credited the “continued sturdy sales of the 20-plus existing different iterations of the album” as well as six new digital album editions, causing her album sales to surge 400% over the week prior. Swift still topped the streaming albums chart over Eilish’s new release.

Forbes Valuation

Forbes estimates Swift to be worth $1.3 billion as of Monday afternoon, making her the first musician to make the billionaire ranks based primarily on music sales and performances. She became a billionaire in October 2023, largely thanks to the success of her Eras Tour.

The practice of releasing multiple physical versions of a single album, including on CD and vinyl, has drawn criticism in recent years. Swift (and many other artists) have released vinyls in different colors and editions for fans to collect—and to boost their sales. Eilish drew attention to the practice this year (and roiled Swift fans) when she told Billboard “it’s some of the biggest artists in the world making f–king 40 different vinyl packages that have a different unique thing just to get you to keep buying more,” while admitting she has previously released multiple vinyl versions herself.
