goa beach places to visit

The gods smiled on Goa . They blessed this sun-kissed strip of the Indian coast with warm winter weather, whispering palms, fine food and friendly people, then garnished the dish with a string of sandy beaches, creating an almost unbroken strip of gold from Arambol to Polem. But with so many beaches to choose from, where to begin?

Whether you’re after unspoiled golden shores, morning yoga classes under the palms or the last embers of the full-moon-flavoured hippy vibe that made the region so (in)famous, there’s a stretch of sand suited to you. Here’s our guide to Goa’s best beaches.

Green seaweed floats in blue water with trees bordering the edge of the beach

Best for peace and quiet: Querim

Escaping the crowds can be tricky in Goa – the beaches are obviously no secret – but it can be done; the trick is to go to the end of the line. So far north it’s almost in Maharashtra, Querim , aka Keri Beach, lies beyond the radar of the legions who congregate in Baga, Calangute and Candolim.

It’s not quite Swiss Family Robinson territory, but this tidy, curving bay comes close if your dream is just the sound of shifting sand. A few beach bungalows set up here in season, but amenities are limited; for the middle ground, try the more developed, but still calm stretches of sand at Mandrem and Agonda.

A DJ, on a raised stage, spins the decks in front of a large crowd at HillTribe club in Goa.

Best for party animals: Anjuna or Vagator

At the other end of the spectrum, the party scene raves on – though with slightly less wild abandon as in the 70s and 80s – at Anjuna and Vagator. You still get great music and barefoot dancing on the sand, but most parties now take place in established venues such as the Hilltop nightclub in Vagator. To get around noise regulations, touring big name DJs often play their sets on Sundays from afternoon to late evening, rather than raving through the night.

Old school full moon parties still take place, of course, but these days things are fairly secretive, with locations shared by social media on the day, to avoid visits from party-pooping officials. There is of course a reason for these party-pooping visits: drug-related deaths occur all too frequently in Goa. If you’re planning to join the party, proceed with extreme caution.

A kite surfer in the waves in front of an orange sunset

Best for water sports: Mandrem or Morjim

With the beach resort scene in full swing, you can get wet in all sorts of wild and wonderful ways along the Goa coastline. January to March is prime time for wind-surfing, with the best breezes in Dona Paula Bay near Panjim. For kitesurfing, learn the ropes at Kite Guru , based at the Riverside resort in Mandrem, or Kitesurfing Goa at Morjim.

Goa also has a healthy ‘proper’ surfing scene, with some impressive swells from October to April, coinciding with the peak tourist season. Banana Surf School at Morjim is a good place for beginners, with surfing lessons that will help you get up on your feet on your very first outing. Agonda’s Aloha Surf India is another prime spot for first-timers.

Scuba diving off Goa isn’t quite the tropical wonderland you might have experienced in Southeast Asia, but there are fish aplenty, plus wrecks, reefs and seaweed forests around Ilha Grande, Ilha Netrani other offshore islands. Candolim’s Dive Goa and Baga’s Barracuda Diving are trusted operators.

Huts, trees, sand and the beach

Best for families: Agonda

Goa is the perfect choice for a family beach holiday in India . The winter weather is pitch perfect, the beach scene is developed, locals love kids and you can even find the familiar tastes of home for tiny travellers who haven’t yet developed an appreciation for Indian cooking.

Many parents rate Agonda for its boogie-board friendly surf, and beachside restaurants that provide a vantage point for watching the children play in the sand. Aswem , Palolem and Patnem also have a good family vibe, with just the right balance of amenities and personal space.

Wherever you go in Goa, be aware that undertows are common, so make sure children stick to the shallows and share advice about swimming parallel to the shore if you get caught in a current. The good news is that most Goa beaches now have government-appointed lifeguards, which should help put parents’ minds at ease.

An imposing Portuguese church located in Old Goa, looming over the surrounding palm trees and scattering of people walking around the grounds.

Best for culture vultures: Candolim

You don’t just go to Goa for the beach. Thanks to centuries of cross-cultural influences, there’s plenty to see once you step back from the sand. The cultural centre of Goa is its appealing capital, Panaji , with a Portuguese-by-way-of-the-tropics vibe, and a cluster of good museums, art galleries, and historic churches. The serious history unfurls once you hit Old Goa , the original Portuguese settlement, where a string of stone-walled churches and cathedrals stand handsomely amongst the palm trees beside the Mandovi River.

The best bases for exploring the state capital and its historic counterpart are the beaches immediately to the north and south, with Candolim, Calangute and Baga having the best bus connections for popping in and out. All three are packed with hotels and resorts, and the competition means you can often pick up a room for a bargain price.

A red curry dish served in a silver colored bowl with handles bowl

Best for foodies: Baga

There’s more to Goan food than vindaloo, though a well-prepared version of this Portuguese-Indian fusion dish flavoured with palm vinegar and dried red chilli is still a delight on the palate. With the influx of globetrotters taking up permanent residence on this strip of coastline, Goa now serves up some spectacular world food amongst the eateries serving delectable Indian cuisine.

Dining choices cross the spectrum, from old-school, traveller-centric cafes such as Vagator’s ever popular vegan Bean Me Up to Utorda’s club-chic, party oriented Zeebop by the Sea .  South Goa is where expats head for the taste of home, at restaurants such as Patnem’s garden-style Jaali Cafe , serving tasty tapas plates from the Middle East and Mediterranean, and Palolem’s highly regarded Ourem 88 , offering inspired takes on European classics such as baked brie and the English Sunday roast.

Some of the tastiest meals are served in the capital, so choose a resort in Candolim, Baga or Calangute to be close to elegant dining options such as Panaji’s boutique Black Sheep Bistro , where tapas dishes ooze farm-to-table flavours, and nostalgically old-school Goan restaurants such as Hotel Venite and Viva Panjim .

High-angle view of Arambol beach: a white stretch of sand being lapped by waves and backed by palm tress. On the sand a number of people sunbathe and a handful of colourful fishing boats also line the shore.

Best for yoga: Assagao and Arambol

Yoga classes on the sand are the very vision of life in Goa, and there are some excellent centres here offering yoga tuition, from casual drop-in classes to serious training from veteran teachers. Assagao has become Goa’s favourite spot to do the downward dog, with popular retreats such as Purple Valley Yoga Retreat and Swan Yoga Retreat offering the full sand and serenity package.

For low-stress drop-in classes, you’ll be spoiled for choice in hippy havens such as Anjuna, Aswem and Mandrem; in South Goa, get your stretch on in Palolem and Patnem. Dedicated practitioners gather in Arambol , where the highly-regarded Himalayan Iyengar Yoga Centre offers five-day training programmes from November to March.

The pristine stretch of coastline in this west Indian state is a gorgeous main event

As wondrous as India is – one of the world’s most diverse and magnificent countries, full of scrummy food, riveting history and incredible people – sometimes all you wanna do is laze out on a beach. Luckily, India has plenty of beaches and bucketloads of ‘em are in Goa.

Looking out onto the Arabian Sea, Goa has long been a popular holiday and party destination. So, whether you’re working through a hangover or just looking to chill-out, Goa’s beaches are an all-round treat. Here are 19 of the best.

Best beaches in Goa

Candolim

1.  Candolim

What is it? A slightly more subdued alternative to bustling  Calangute, the neighbouring party beach.

Why go? Characterized by scrubbed sand dunes, clear waters, crisp sea breeze and huge swathes of soft sands, Candolim is known for its beauty. Adventurers can also get involved in parasailing, banana rides, scuba diving and jet skiing. For a post-beach drink, head to the nearby shacks and quench your thirst with a refreshing cocktail made from feni, a traditional Goan spirit. Now, let the calmness flow through you.

Patnem

2.  Patnem

What is it?  A perfect haven for a little rest and recuperation – and yogis too.

Why go? Patnem Beach is a slice of paradise for those who want to have some serious me time. There’s little in the way of hotels and nightlife; instead, embrace the chill factor and hang out at the humble bamboo huts on the beach, or take part in a yoga retreat. There's pristine sand to relax on and clear waters to swim in. While you're here, do try the delicious speciality roast New Zealand lamb at nearby bar/restaurant Nada Brahma.

Miramar

3.  Miramar

What is it? A scenic beach that looks as though a photograph of it's vista should hang in the most distinguished of art galleries.

Why go? With unrivalled views of the Arabian Sea, as well as a great helping of delicate sands and wild greenery, we'd argue that Miramar is one of the loveliest beaches in Goa. Once you’ve had your fill of swimming and sunbaking, make your way to the shoreline where you’ll find fun souvenir shops and great eateries. Wanna get romantic? Stick around for sunset to experience Miramar at its most beautiful (and to capture the perfect honeymoon pic).

Agonda

4.  Agonda

What is it? A super-relaxed stretch of sand located 15 minutes from Palolem.

Why go? If you’re partied out and want a quieter atmosphere, Agonda beach should be on your list. It's the kind of place where your only priorities for the day should be sunbathing and swimming. As a bonus, its soft sands attract olive ridley turtles who come here to lay their eggs. You’re welcome to enjoy this experience, as long as you keep a distance and avoid flash photography.

Cavelossim

5.  Cavelossim

What is it? One of Goa’s most picturesque beaches, fronted by black lava rocks, miles of white sand and blue sea, plus the inevitable fringe of palm trees.

Why go? If it’s gorgeous scenery you’re after, it doesn’t get much better than this. And aside from topping up your tan and enjoying the spectacular scenery, the calm sea conditions are ideal for swimming. There are also pursuits like kayaking, catamaran sailing and dolphin sightseeing trips available.

Butterfly

6.  Butterfly

What is it? A hidden gem located north of Palolem beach.

Why go? Travellers in search of a secluded and romantic slice of paradise should look no further than Butterfly. It’s slightly difficult to access – you’ll have the option of a short trek through dense forest or a boat ride from the nearby Palolem and Agonda beaches – but this just adds to its appeal. Once you’re there, flop down on the soft sand and relax, enjoy watching dolphins cavorting from the shoreline, challenge the waves canoeing or grab your binoculars for some butterfly watching. Sea cucumbers, sea urchins, goldfish and redfish lurk on the seabed, so keep an eye out. Should you get peckish, there are a couple of restaurants nearby, but we still recommend bringing enough supplies to last the day.

Palolem

7.  Palolem

What is it? A sweeping two-kilometre stretch of glistening white sand bookended by tall coconut palms.

Why go? Home to a quieter crowd, Palolem is ideal for lazy afternoon bathing under the sun, swimming or boating. If you’re lucky, you’ll even spot dolphins. As the night settles in, the southern end of the beach turns into an open-air club, complete with a silent disco that allows you to choose your own tunes. Keen to stay on the beach? There are temporary coco huts for that; but if comfort is your main concern, there are resorts and hotels nearby.

Calangute and Baga

8.  Calangute and Baga

What is it? Two beautiful interconnected beaches that attract thrill-seeking adventurers and those looking to party.

Why go? If you want action (and don't mind crowds), Calangute and its neighbouring beach Baga are for you. You can spend all day relaxing on sun lounges and dipping into the waves. And when the sun gets strong, simply wander into the beach shacks and restaurants for a cold one and some fresh seafood. Once the sun goes down, you can head to nightclubs like Café Mambo, which stay open into the wee hours.

Arambol

9.  Arambol

What is it? The northernmost beach in Goa, perfect for alternative therapies and surfing.

Why go? If you want to catch some waves away from the hordes, Arambol is the perfect beach destination for you. New to surfing? Check out the Surf Wala School that offers lessons of international standards. Besides surfing, you can indulge in alternative therapies like yoga, meditation, tai chi and reiki. In the evening, there are drum circles, jam sessions and live music.

Galgibaga

10.  Galgibaga

What is it? One of the cleanest beaches in India, which also serves as a nesting place for olive ridley sea turtles.

Why go? Unmarred by commercialisation or tourist hordes, Galgibaga rewards visitors with clear waters, silver sands, swaying coconut palm trees and a peaceful vibe. A word of caution, though: there aren’t any restaurants or shacks in sight, so pack some snacks and water to last the day. If you time your visit between December and February, you might witness a large congregation of pretty olive ridley sea turtles.

Anjuna

11.  Anjuna

What is it? A haven for backpackers and hippies.

Why go? If you're looking for a bohemian beach getaway, Anjuna Beach is a great choice. By day, you can enjoy beach sports like windsurfing, parasailing, jet skiing and scuba diving; and when the sun goes down, it's party time. Psytrance music wafts out of the beachside shacks and bars like Curlies and Shiva Valley. If you're here on Wednesday, hit up the flea market for authentic souvenir shopping.

Mobor

12.  Mobor

What is it?  A hub for all things water sports (and general wet activities) as well as a pretty good spot for a beach party.

Why go? If you're in favour of escaping busy crowds whilst still accessing exciting things to do, then Mobor beach is the perfect destination. It's the best of both worlds, you'll find: water skiing, parasailing, jet-skiing, banana boat rides and underwater fishing, too. And that's not all – once you've finished living your aqua fantasies, get ready for a big ol' party. Yep - come evening, things here get pretty wild.

Querim

13.  Querim

What is it? Also known as Keri Beach, Querim is the perfect antidote to a hectic life.

Why go? It’s one of the quietest beaches in the north of Goa. That said, the waves are quite rough here, so we recommend sticking to lazing about on the sand. If you head a few metres inland from the beach, you’ll find an ancient Ajoba temple and the seventeenth-century Terekhol Fort, now converted into a hotel.

Dona Paula Beach

14.  Dona Paula Beach

What is it? Also referred to as ‘Lovers’ Paradise’, Dona Paula is best for Instagram-ready sunsets.

Why go? If a lovely stretch of soft sand lapped by calm waters and shielded by palm trees isn’t reason enough to visit Dona Paula, then the mesmerizing view of the sun setting over the shore in the evening should be. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also get your heart facing with windsurfing, kayaking, water skiing, parasailing and motorboat rides.

Vagator

15.  Vagator

What is it? Vagator is divided into two small beaches by a headland – North or Big Vagator to the right of the beach facing the sea; and Ozran or Little Vagator beach to the left.

Why go? Located minutes away from the happening Anjuna Beach, Vagator isn’t as crowded, which makes it a perfect place to sit back and relax. You’ll find beach shacks, restaurants and shops just footsteps from the waves. At the end of the beach, you’ll find the face of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva carved into a seaside boulder. Once you’re there, walk an extra mile to visit the historic Chapora Fort, too. If you’re a party person, Vagator won’t disappoint as trance parties are held here often at bars and nightclubs like Disco Valley, Hill Top and the Mango Tree.

Mandrem

16.  Mandrem

What is it? The ideal spot for couples and solitude-seekers.

Why go? Quiet Mandrem Beach – loved for its unspoiled soft white sands – is bookended by casuarina and palm trees, making it a perfect spot to spend a lazy and peaceful afternoon. Take a romantic walk with your partner, inhale the smell of trees, practice your downward dog or indulge in alternative therapies like meditation and tai chi. There are also a few beach shacks where you can sample the local food while sipping on a cold beer.

Morjim

17.  Morjim

What is it? A great spot for bird-lovers.

Why go? Morjim is teeming with different bird species; keep your eyes peeled for the kingfisher, sand plover, sandpipers, quill, cuckoo and bay-backed shrike. It’s also a great place to go dolphin-watching. There are many shacks and restaurants on the beach; some of which are run by Russian restaurateurs, which means you can have a taste of Russian cuisine alongside Goan fare.

Colva

18.  Colva

What is it? A large and increasingly popular beach, packed with locals and tourists alike.

Why go? In the peak season, Colva does get quite crowded – but that’s no surprise considering what it has to offer. We're talking vast stretches of sand, an abundance of water activities, food shacks and nearby bars that are worth dropping into. While you’re here, visit Our Lady of Merces Church, too. Also called Colva Church, it's legendary.

Benaulim

19.  Benaulim

What is it? A peaceful alternative to the adjacent Colva Beach.

Why go? It’s certainly not a hidden gem, but Colva still feels secluded and relaxed. The beach boasts calm waters, family-friendly restaurants and water activity, which makes it a perfect spot for a fun-filled family day out.

18 Best Beaches in Goa

Written by Joni Sweet Updated Mar 10, 2023

Goa might be among India's smallest states, but it has a bounty of beaches that beat any other coastal areas of the subcontinent. Think: swaying palms, uninterrupted stretches of glittery gold sand, and smooth azure surf that promises to soothe the stresses of traveling in India. And at just an hour and 15 minutes away by air from Mumbai, Goa is an easy holiday destination to add to any trip to South India.

No matter what you're looking for, you can find coastal places to visit in Goa that suit your individual travel style. Benaulim Beach is a welcoming destination for families. Agonda Beach is the go-to place for wannabe surfers. Travelers who want to go off the beaten path will love discovering Butterfly Beach.

For more ideas to help you plan your visit to this petite paradise, check out our list of the best beaches in Goa.

1. Colva Beach

2. dona paula beach, 3. morjim beach, 4. palolem beach, 5. vagator beach, 6. galgibaga beach, 7. benaulim beach, 8. calangute beach, 9. agonda beach, 10. arambol beach, 11. candolim beach, 12. anjuna beach, 13. butterfly beach, 14. cavelossim beach, 15. ashwem beach, 16. miramar beach, 17. mobor beach, 18. sinquerim beach, map of beaches in goa, goa, india - climate chart.

Palms on Colva Beach

One of Goa's most famous beaches, Colva attracts crowds of tourists during high season (mid-November through mid-February) – for good reason. The 2.4-kilometer-long beach in south Goa offers an endless array of aquatic adventure sports (including jet skiing, banana boat rides, and parasailing), sand that's as soft and as white as baby powder, and a well-developed tourism infrastructure that can cater to your every need. See for yourself at the incredible beach resorts in this area.

Colva Beach is a favorite among Indian tourists, so if you're looking for a local experience, you'll find it here. Consider staying overnight at one of the many homestay accommodations offered by families in the village for an even more authentic trip.

When you've had enough sun, head just a few minutes inland for sanctuary at Our Lady of Mercy Church. The white-washed spiritual center in the village square was founded in the 1600s and houses a famous statue of an i nfant Jesus that reportedly has healing powers . The attraction draws countless pilgrims from around the world for the traditional Fama celebration every October.

Dona Paula Beach

Dona Paula Beach is one of the best beaches in Goa for honeymoon tourists. Nicknamed "Lovers' Paradise," this coastal destination in the suburbs of Panaji even has its own l ove legend .

The tale is about Dona Paula, the daughter of a Portuguese viceroy, who threw herself into the Arabian Sea after her father forbade her from seeing a Goan fisherman who had stolen her heart. The viceroy was so saddened by the loss of his young daughter that he named this entire beautiful area after her, and treated it as a tribute to eternal romance.

It's easy for modern-day tourists to fall in love with this pretty beach. It's got calm waters and bronze sand shaded by palm trees, along with a relaxing vibe that begs you to stick around for sunset. It's also well served by a range of accommodations, including boutique hotels and luxury beach resorts , that will make you feel right at home.

Morjim Beach

This beach in north Goa offers a more wild, rustic feel than others in the state. It's a tranquil escape, lined with beach huts and sun beds, where you can spend hours on end. Morjim Beach has earned the nickname "Little Russia" for the large influx of Russians who stay here for weeks at a time. Its abundance of Russian restaurants can be a welcome change of pace from the rest of the food in Goa.

One of the top things to do in Morjim Beach is check out the wildlife. A variety of feathered species, including kingfishers, cuckoos, bay-backed shrikes, and sand plovers, create a bird-lovers' utopia . Olive ridley sea turtles can be found along the beach and offer unique photo opportunities. However, local laws prohibit tourists from disturbing the creatures, so be respectful and avoid getting too close. Look out to sea and you may see dolphins swimming along the horizon.

Hot tip: Bring your best pair of binoculars, so you can get up-close views of the animals at Morjim Beach.

Palolem Beach

Accommodations in Goa don't get much quirkier than what you'll find at Palolem Beach. Every year, locals in the hospitality industry erect temporary coco huts in which travelers can spend the night. The rustic rooms make up for their lack of luxury with premier access to one of Goa's best beaches, dedicated lounge chairs right on the sand, and a one-of-a-kind experience that make for a lifetime's worth of memories.

Make the most of your time at stunning Palolem Beach by taking part in the many activities offered here. Take a dolphin sightseeing excursion on the Arabian Sea. Test your balance and find your zen in beach yoga classes . And sample traditional Goan flavors at one of the many well-reputed restaurants on Palolem Beach.

Vagator Beach

Vagator Beach is a lively area, but compared to the crowds of nearby Anjuna Beach, it's a serene getaway. Here, tourists will find a variety of offerings, including renowned restaurants that cater to every dietary need, shops filled to the brim with tempting souvenirs, and beach shacks with all the essentials you'll need for a day of sand and surf.

Walk to the end of Vagator Beach and you'll discover one of Goa's most picturesque attractions: the head of a Hindu deity carved into a boulder on the shore. Devotees often adorn the sculpture with marigold garlands and colored pigments.

A short walk inland brings you to Chapora Fort, a structure built by the Portuguese in the 17th century. Its hilltop location offers soothing seaside vistas.

Galgibaga Beach

With limited commercial development, Galgibaga remains one of the cleanest beaches in Goa. Pack a picnic lunch and head to this relatively undiscovered beach to enjoy crystal-clear seawater, caramel-colored sand, and a grove of tropical coconut palm trees. Bring enough water to last you through the day – there are few places to refuel here, and the sun can be powerful.

Galgibaga is sometimes affectionately referred to as "Turtle Beach" for the shelled creatures that nest in this protected area. Plan to visit between December and February for your best chance at seeing the olive ridley sea turtles, which are the second smallest species of sea turtle in the world.

Benaulim Beach

Benaulim Beach is regularly ranked as one of the best beaches in Goa for families . Just south of Colva Beach, this laid-back destination offers a pleasant getaway for tourists who aren't into the Goan party scene. Benaulim Beach's soft white sand is a gold mine for youngsters who want to collect seashells and build sandcastles.

Tour operators offer plenty of water sports at Banaulim Beach. Choose from parasailing, Jet Ski rentals and dolphin-spotting excursions.

When you're feeling peckish, head to one of the popular beach shack restaurants. Little Tiger, a kid-friendly Indian restaurant, serves fresh seafood, crispy chicken, and fruit juices. Blue Corner , a Benaulim Beach mainstay, is a reliable spot for Tandoori meals. Leave room for the restaurant's sought-after lemon cheesecake!

Calangute Beach

If you're looking for one of the best beaches in Goa for foreigners, head to Calangute. The "Queen of Beaches" (as it's sometimes known) offers that quintessential Goan beach experience, with ample lounge chairs, smooth waves, and sunshine galore.

Tuck into fried prawns and icy cold soft drinks from the thatched-roof shacks just up the sand at this beach in north Goa. From here, you can arrange exciting things to do on Calangute Beach, like snorkeling and dolphin-watching trips, banana boat rides, and sailing . You can also shop for souvenirs, like wooden handicrafts, textiles, silver jewelry, and seashell necklaces.

Head into town to see St. Alex Church, one of Calangute's main attractions. The immaculate white church, which has an Indian-style cupola architectural feature, has been an oasis for locals and visitors alike since the 1600s.

Aerial view of Agonda Beach

Eager to try surfing ? Head to Agonda Beach in South Goa. Its smooth, consistent waves prove accessible to first-timers. Encouraging teachers at local surf schools, like Aloha Surf India , will help you get the hang of hanging 10 and maximize your fun in the ocean playground. Agonda Beach is also a prime spot for bodyboarding .

Even if water sports aren't your thing, you can still have a perfect beach day at Agonda. Its calm vibe and cool breeze create the perfect atmosphere to linger around all day long. If you're lucky, you might even spot olive ridley sea turtles in the area.

Sunset yoga on Arambol Beach

Arambol was once an untouched fishing village, but backpackers have since transformed it into a mecca for free spirits. You could spend your day here lounging on the beach and enjoying the sea. However, most tourists enhance their itineraries with tons of soulful things to do at Arambol Beach. You can practice tai chi , take part in spirited yoga classes in the sand, lose yourself in guided meditation backed by the sounds of the tide, get entranced by nighttime drum circles , and restore your body and mind in a reiki session .

Arambol Beach also rivals Agonda when it comes to the surf scene . Surf Wala, an international surf school in Goa, offers lessons for groups and individuals that range from one to five days. Surf Wala also rents out surf boards, bodyboards, and fins.

Candolim Beach

Candolim Beach offers that classic stretch of sand lined by beach shacks and cafés that every tourist in Goa is looking for. Nearby Baga Beach tends to attract more crowds, which leaves Candolim Beach delightfully less boisterous, and spectacularly beautiful. It's an inviting place with just the right amount of development to keep visitors comfortable and entertained.

Plan to spend one full day at Candolim Beach. It'll give you time to see the ocean fade into different shades of blue, gray, and white throughout the day. Plus, it's one of the best places to watch the sunset in Goa . Snag your perfect spot and watch as the sky explodes into a rainbow of colors.

Anjuna Beach

Anjuna Beach is a magnet for travelers looking to get a taste of the hippie trail from the 1960s. The beach itself is a classic in Goa, with plenty of space to sunbathe on golden sand and watch the palm trees dance in the breeze. The destination's bohemian energy pulses within the funky beach restaurants and live music venues .

Shopping at the Anjuna Beach flea market on Wednesdays is one of the top things to do in Goa . The massive alfresco tourist bazaar has fresh tea leaves, woven clothing, wooden deity statutes, and myriad tchotchkes that you'll want to take home.

Aerial view of secluded Butterfly Beach

Butterfly Beach offers a secluded place to chill out in south Goa. The semi-circular stretch of sand is bookended by piles of boulders, which make for great sightseeing perches. You'll feel like you've stumbled upon a desert island.

Getting to Butterfly Beach might not be easy, but it's worth it. You'll need to hike through a few kilometers of dense forest, or hop on a boat from nearby Agonda Beach or Palolem Beach. Bring supplies to keep you comfortable, as there aren't many restaurants or shops nearby.

Cavelossim Beach

Cavelossim Beach stands out from other beaches in Goa for its unique stretch of white sand and black lava rocks . The contrasting geological features and relatively small crowds create glorious scenery that's worthy of any postcard. The calm waters here are also perfect for tourists who want to spend their day swimming.

Tour operators along Cavelossim Beach offer fun activities to get you out on the Arabian Sea. Choose from dolphin sightseeing boat trips, catamaran rides , and kayak rentals.

Hot tip: Tourists report being hassled by pushy touts along Cavelossim Beach. If you're not interested in dealing with them, simply decline their offer and ignore any further attempts at a sale until they go away. Don't let them ruin your relaxed day in this picturesque place.

Palm-lined Ashwem Beach

If you want to have a 1.5-kilometer stretch of pristine coastline and soft white sand all to yourself, head to Ashwem Beach. Considered one of North Goa's best-kept secrets, this beach tends to have almost no crowds, giving you the chance to soak up its immaculate beauty in solitude. You can also see a vast cashew plantation.

While Ashwem Beach has little to offer in the way of water sports, it's scattered with beach shacks and huts where you can grab a meal. Check out La Plage , an open-air café that has a diverse menu of French and Indian cuisine, along with grilled comfort foods. Tourists also rave about Hangout Restaurant , which is known for its attentive service and garden fresh salads topped with prawns.

Miramar Beach

Looking to stay active during your Goa vacation? Plan to visit Miramar Beach–every morning, fitness lovers flock to this stunning beach for peaceful walks, jogs, and yoga sessions on the shore. Tourists can also take part in adventurous activities, such as parasailing and fishing , all day long.

Look across the Mandovi River from Miramar Beach, and you can catch a glimpse of the impressive Fort Aguada. The structure, which dates back to the 17th century, is a Monument of National Importance in Goa.

Aerial view of Mobor Beach

Just an hour away from Goa's international airport, Mobor Beach puts tourists into vacation mode the moment they wade into its cool, crystal-clear water. It strikes the perfect balance between being an escape from the crowds you'll find on other Goan beaches, but still having plenty of services and activities for tourists, including beachside grills , banana boat rides, and a laid-back promenade.

After spending a couple of hours at Mobor Beach, head inland to see some nearby attractions. Betul Fort and Lighthouse , located 11 kilometers away, is a popular spot for history buffs and heritage lovers. There are also a number of picturesque churches near the beach, including Holy Cross Chapel and St. Francis Xavier Church.

Sinquerim Beach

Don't forget your camera when you visit Sinquerim Beach. With golden sand and frayed palms, it's easily one of Goa's prettiest coastal escapes. You'll have ample choice of attractive spots to spread out your beach towel and soak up all the amazing views.

The tourist-friendly beach is well serviced with restaurants and taxis, making it an easy spot for a day trip from elsewhere in Goa. You could also choose to stay at one of the upscale hotels in the area.

1. Palolem Beach

I absolutely loved Palolem Beach in South Goa. It reminded me of the beaches in Thailand or in the Philippines which is why I think it’s one of the best beaches in Goa for foreigners!

Palolem Beach is not a huge beach but not small either and it’s located in a nice bay. The beach has lots of restaurants lining it offering sunbeds free of charge when you buy food or a drink from them. None of them are flashy and there are no high rise hotels on the beach, or even in the area, just lots of huts and small buildings which helps create the paradise of Palolem Beach in Goa.

The main road of Palolem Beach runs behind the beach, it’s quiet with lots of shops and even more cafes and restaurants. The best cafe in Palolem Beach is Zest offering healthy vegetarian and vegan food, I ended up there way too many times.

If you want to do Yoga in Goa, I’d recommend Earth Yoga Village as a great place for a Yoga Holiday in Goa!

Overall Palolem Beach is a great beach in Goa for backpackers and foreign tourists because it offers an uncommercialised beach setting with plenty of accommodation options. It’s the kind of place you visit for a few days and end up staying for longer!

2. Patnem Beach

Patnem Beach is one of the best beaches located in South Goa. While the beach is located at close proximity to the famous Palolem Beach, it’s still relatively lesser-known which makes it a super chilled out beach and one of the best beaches in Goa for foreigners!

There are lots of beach shacks and huts located right at the beach for lounging, eating and drinking cocktails after a dip in the ocean. There’s a small market with shops selling clothes and accessories on the road leading to the beach. You’ll find a few Goa hotels, guest houses and restaurants on this road itself. The beach has a relaxed vibe and very little crowd which makes it a better alternative to some of the popular beaches in Goa if what you’re looking for is relaxation with some peace and quiet.

You’ll find very few Indian tourists and mostly a foreign crowd at Patnem beach because it hasn’t gained popularity among the Indian visitors yet so you should add it to your Goa itinerary .

The lesser number of visitors combined with all the amenities present at the beach make it a great choice for foreign visitors to Goa.

3. Arambol Beach

Arambol is a popular beach in North Goa. It used to be a popular hippy spot and although there is still a hippy vibe with evening drum circles, yoga and various healing courses on offer it’s also very popular with holidaymakers and backpackers too.

Arambol beach is huge in length and width with lots of restaurants along it offering sunbeds in return for a drink or food from their menu. The ocean is perfect for swimming in with enough waves for it to be fun but not dangerous and the sunset in Arambol is beautiful as the beach is perfectly west facing.

As well as there being plenty of restaurants on the beach in Arambol the town behind the beach is a hive of activity too with lots of shops, restaurants and cafes selling Indian Food but also healthy Western Food making it one of the best beaches in Goa for foreigners!

4. Agonda Beach

Situated in South Goa, Agonda Beach is a golden crescent of powder-soft sand, where the pace slows down to the meditative sway of the palm trees, and where cows come to congregate at sunset. This is a far cry from the concrete jungles and party beaches elsewhere in Goa; although you will still easily find WiFi and Western Food.

We were visiting Goa with kids (aged 2 and 4) and this was a perfect beach for them as it’s not too busy, it’s clean, and the surf was just right for boogie-boards. Plus, despite my kids both being very fair, then didn’t receive any unwanted attention or selfie-requests, which is something we always had to deal with whilst out and about at our then home in Bangalore.

Agonda is a quiet beach, and the sea has just the right amount of gentle surf for a good boogie-board session. There are also a handful of restaurants serving Western (e.g. pancakes, omelettes and chips) as well as your yummy South Indian curries. But, the best thing is that these restaurants are right on the beach, so visitors can enjoy a Kingfisher whilst the little ones play in the sand.

For those who fancy peeling themselves away from the beach can take a fishing boat out to see the dolphins.

5. Anjuna Beach

Anjuna is a small village in north Goa, where the land meets the calm waters of the Arabian Sea. Laid-back yet colourful, Anjuna is the perfect destination for foreigners looking to unwind next to the ocean, explore one of Goa’s biggest markets and chill out in beachside bars and restaurants.

Anjuna doesn’t have the most expansive beach in Goa, but it does have plenty of charm. Foreigners will enjoy Anjuna’s laid-back atmosphere, where chilled backpacker hostels, coffee shops, bars and restaurants fringe the beach.

Along its shoreline, Anjuna also offers plenty of activities, including yoga classes and water sports such as jet skiing and parasailing. It’s also home to the magnificent Albuquerque Mansion, which was built in 1920 and boasts a beautiful Mangalore tile top and octagonal towers.

BOOKING TRAINS IN INDIA

India is best travelled by train because its the quickest, cheapest and best way of getting to know the country. For an EASY option of booking trains in India use 12GO to search and book trains really easily. If you’ll be in India for awhile, you can use the local booking system, it’s a bit tricker but possible, here’s my post on how to book trains in India as a tourist .

BEST ACCOMMODATION IN INDIA

I always use Booking.com to book my hotels in India and Hostelworld to book my hostels . India has a great range of accommodation with brilliant hostel chains like Moustache, Zostel and Backpacker Panda as well as homestays to luxury hotels.

GUIDED TOURS IN INDIA

Many cities in India are best seen with a guide , even if it’s just a half day tour on your first day . Cities in India are chaotic and complex and what better way to taste the food and get to know the city than with a local. I recommend Get Your Guide & Viator for the best tours in India!

The biggest draw of Anjuna, though, is its famous flea market, which takes place every Wednesday. The market was originally created a few decades ago by foreign hippies who were trying to fund their stay in Goa by selling their crafts and skills. However, it has since become a huge market selling products from all over India: spices from Kerala, colourful saris from Rajasthan and so much more.

Though Anjuna was originally seen as a hotspot for backpackers, midrange and domestic travellers have also been making their way to Anjuna in recent years. It’s easy to see why – this gorgeous beach and its surroundings have a lot to offer and is easily one of the beaches in Goa for foreigners!

Suggested by: The Planet Edit

Goa isn’t all about the beaches, there are many markets in Goa, activities and Churches of Old Goa to visit too!

6. Morjim Beach

Morjim beach in North Goa, is close to the more popular beaches of the region , yet stands apart due to its quiet, tranquil nature. It is a relatively untraveled beach, visitors go here to get away from the crowds, and to relax at the huts and shacks scattered along the sand at the south end.

The area, part of the small Morjim village, is inhabited by a wide variety of people creating a good blend of diverse cultures and different languages . It has also earned the alias “Little Russia” due to the large concentration of Russian expatriates living there. The landscape is a mix of palm trees, paddy fields, and forests and is well known as a nesting ground for the endangered Olive Ridley Sea Turtles.

The protected marine turtles mean that parties and loud music are generally banned, with relaxation and alternative therapies being the activities of choice.

Lifeguards are on duty from sunrise to sunset and in season, the water is pleasant for swimming. It is also a popular place among kitesurfers due to its shallow waters and wide beach.

7. Colva Beach

Colva beach is one of the best beaches in South Goa . To reach Colva beach you can take a taxi from Margao Railway Station. It’s just 7 km away. From Panjim, the capital of Goa it takes around 1 hour.

The beach is lined out with coconut reefs. It is well known for its whitewashed Our Lady of Mercy Church founded in the year 1630. The church is very beautiful. If you’re looking to chill and get a nice tan line, this beach is perfect and one of the best beaches in Goa for foreigners. It’s neither too crowded not too isolated. If you are with kids in Goa then you can try out water sports like snorkelling, parasailing, jet-skiing, banana ride etc at this beach.

If you are looking for nightlife then there are a great number of restaurants and bars that offer high-end music and dance with complimentary drinks. You can also find beach shacks from November to March. These are great places to stay or just spend time dancing and trying the seafood at budget.

Colva Beach | best beaches in Goa for foreigners

8. Cola Beach

Most travellers to Goa usually opt to stay in the more popular beaches in North Goa or in Palolem Beach in South Goa and so many often overlook the hidden gems in between like Cola Beach in South Goa ! Cola Beach is one of the best beaches in Goa and least visited beaches in Goa due to its hard-to-reach location and lack of media coverage. But this stunning beach is well worth the bumpy ride through unpaved roads.

Once you arrive at Cola Beach, you will see a few places where you can sleep to spend the night right on the beach, 2-3 restaurants, and a just a few travellers relaxing and enjoying the epic views. This is not a party beach , travellers should visit Cola Beach to relax and connect with the natural surroundings.

The beach itself is clean with few waves and a gorgeous backdrop of green hills. But what really makes it stand out? The Blue Lagoon. A freshwater river which pours out to the beach. This gorgeous river is surrounded by tall palm trees and verdant foliage.

Consider spending a night here or at least making your visit to Cola Beach a day trip so you can enjoy all its parts from the Blue Lagoon River to its epic sunsets.

9. Vagator Beach

Vagator Beach is one of the non-crowded beaches in North Goa and one of the offbeat places in Goa . The beach is split into two parts, one is known aa big Vagator and the other is known as the little Vagator.

The high cliffs looking down on the Vagator Beach create a dramatic effect. The coconut tree near the cliff adds to the beauty of the beach. You have to climb down the stair to reach the beach. The sand is soft and the water is clean for swimming. Two freshwater springs fall into the sea at Vagator beach. There are a couple of shacks on the beach during the high season. This beach is not crowded like other popular beaches in North Goa even during the high season.

Many places near the beach play trance and psychedelic music from different DJ’s from around the world during high season and it is a popular place for rave parties which is why it’s known as one of the beaches in Goa for foreigners! Vagator is popular among western tourists due to it’s laid back culture and clean beaches, and for being a party beach in Goa.

The Holy City of Varanasi

6 days  / from 785 USD

The Holy City of Varanasi

The flat, sunburnt plains of the Ganges River are India's breadbasket: a densely populated area, it is home to many of the country's greatest sights. See Delhi and all its treasures, then fly to Varanasi, the most sacred stretch of the Ganges and one of India's most intense and atmospheric places.

Located halfway down  India’s southwest coast, Goa has been a popular holiday destination since colonial times. Back in those days, troops used to travel here from across the country for a spot of R&R.

Skip forward to the twentieth century, and hippies first came to the region shortly after its “Liberation” in 1961. At this time, travellers fell in love with small fishing- and coconut-cultivation coastal villages.  By the nineties, the rave scene saw Goa's trance transformed into a fully-fledged musical genre, with crazy full-moon parties taking hold.

These days, Goa attracts some two million tourists each winter, with budget air travel options making it a major package tour destination for Europeans.

Best South Goa Beaches

Backed by a lush band of coconut plantations and green hills, Goa’s south coast is fringed by some of the region’s finest beaches.

Just arrived in the region? Benaulim, 6km west of the state’s second city, Margao, makes a great first base   The most traveller-friendly resort in the area, it stands right in the middle of a spectacular 25km stretch of pure white sand. Although increasingly carved up by Mumbai time-share companies, low-cost accommodation here remains plentiful and of a consistently high standard.

In contrast, nearby Colva, is best avoided. It’s degenerated over the past decade, and is frequented by huge numbers of day-trippers. Meanwhile, in the far south, the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary affords a rare glimpse of unspoiled forest and its fauna.

With the gradual spread of package tourism down the coast, Palolem, a ninety-minutedrive south of Margao along the main highway, is Goa’s most happening beach. Set against a backdrop of forest-cloaked hills, its bay is spectacular. That said, the crowds can feel overwhelming inhigh season.

For a quieter scene, try Agonda, just up the coast, or Patnem, immediately south of Palolem.  Among the possible day-trips inland, a crop of Portuguese-era mansions at Chandor and Quepem are your best options.

Not sure where to base yourself? Browse the  best beaches in India  for inspiration.

Nowhere else in peninsular India conforms so splendidly to the archetypal image of a paradise beach as Palolem. This is, undoubtedly, one of the best beaches in Goa. 35km south of Margao, and lined with a swaying curtain of coconut palms, the bay forms a perfect curve of golden sand. This arches north from a giant pile of boulders to a spur of the Sahyadri Hills, and tapers into the sea draped in thick forest.

That said, over the past decade, Palolem has developed into the most popular resort in Goa among independent foreign travellers. From late November, visitor numbers become positively overwhelming. But simply, Palolem in full swing is the kind of place you’ll either love at first sight, or want to escape as quickly as possible. If you’re in the latter category, try smaller, less frequented Patnem beach, a short walk south around the headland. More on that later.

How to get there by bus

Regular buses run between Margao and Palolem, stopping at the end of the lane leading from the mainstreet to the beachfront. Frequent services also run between Margao and Karwar (in Karnataka ) via the nearby market town of Canacona/Chaudi (every 30min; 2hr), 2km southeast across the rice fields.

Canacona/Chaudi is also the nearest railhead to Palolem. The station lies a short way north of the main bazaar.

#2 Colva beach, Benaulim

Scattered around coconut groves and paddy fields 7km west of Margao, the fishing village of Benaulim lies in the dead centre of Colva beach. It is breath-taking, particularly around sunset, when the brilliant white sand and surf reflect the changing colours to enchanting effect. While the settlement had barely made it onto the backpackers’ map two decades ago, today it attracts affluent holiday-makers from metropolitan India.

At the same time, long-stay British pensioners and thirty-something European couples make up the bulk of the foreign contingent. While Benaulim’s rising popularity has slightly dented its charm, if you time your visit well (avoid Diwali and the Christmas peak season), it’s still hard to beat as a place to unwind.

Beach aside, the seafood is superb, and accommodation and motorbikes are cheaper than anywhere else in the state.

How to get there by bus

Buses from Margao run every 20min or so from the Kadamba bus stand to Benaulim's Maria Hall crossroads. To get the beach (1.5km west), there’s a taxi and auto-rickshaw rank at the crossroads.

How to get there motorbike or bicycle

Signs offering motorbikes forrent are dotted along the lanes off Maria Hall crossroads. If you're planning to continue further south, note that motor-bikes are much cheaper to rent here than in Palolem.

10km northwest of the market town of Chaudi (known to outsiders as Canacona), Agonda comes as a pleasant surprise after the chaos elsewhere in Goa. The village deserves to be high on the list for travellers seeking somewhere quiet and wholesome. The surrounding hills and forest are exquisite, and the sand is super soft and clean.

In addition, Agonda offers enough amenities for a relaxing holiday and plenty of local atmosphere. Accommodation in this predominantly Catholic fishing village is in small-scale,family-run guesthouses and upper-end hut camps, with a largely easy-going, health-conscious clientele. Agonda beach is also known for its Olive Ridley Sea-Turtles.

Agonda is served by four daily buses from the nearest market town, Canacona/Chaudi (20–30min). Two run to Margao (2hr). Most services stop at the junction on the main Palolem road, 1km east. From here you can usually find a rickshaw for the trip into the village.

With a string of hut camps and shacks lining the beach, Patnem is one of the mellower spots in these parts. It's one of the best beaches in Goa. Curving 1km to a steep bluff, the beach is broad, and shelves quite steeply at certain phases of the tide. That said, the undertow rarely gets dangerously strong.

Alongside soaking up the chilled vibes, visitors come here to enjoy the likes of yoga, reiki, pilates and massage classes.

How to get there by train

The nearest railway station is Canacona/Chaudi.

Patnem’s bus stop is 1km or so closer to Canacona/ Chaudi than Palolem. Buses start at the Kadamba bus stand at the north end of Chaudi’s bazaar and drop passengers at the end of the short lane leading to Patnem beach.

Another possibility is an auto-rickshaw from Canacona/Chaudi. Auto-rickshaws and taxis for the return trip hang around along the beachfront lane.

#5 Rajbag and beyond

To enjoy another kilometre-long sweep of white sand, at low tide, you can walk around the bottom of the steep-sided headland that divides Patnem from Rajbag. From there, you could press on further south by crossing the Talpona Rivervia a hand-paddled ferry. This usually has to be summoned from the far bank.

Once across, a short walk brings you to Talpona beach, which is beautifully backed by low dunes and a line of palms. From here, you can cross the headland at the end of the beach to reach Galjibag. This gorgeous remote white-sand bay is a protected nesting site for Olive ridley sea turtles. Note that a strong undertow renders it unsafe to swim.

Most beaches can also be reached by auto-rickshaw from Canacona/Chaudi.

Best North Goa beaches

Markedly livelier and more nightlife oriented than the South, development in North Goa is concentrated behind the 7km strip of sand that stretches from Fort Aguada to Baga Creek.

Just like the South, the Nort hosts some of the best beaches in Goa. Encompassing the resorts of Candolim, Calangute and Baga, this is Goa’s prime charter belt. As such, it’s an area most independent travellers choose to avoid.

Since the advent of mass tourism in the 1980s, the alternative scene has drifted progressively north away from the sunbed strip to Anjuna and Vagator, which are among the area’s best beaches.

Further north still, Arambol has thus far escaped any large-scale development.

Aswem and Mandrem, just south of Arambol, are this stretch of coast’s hot tips. Though rapidly filling up, they’re still reasonably off-track.

Relatively isolated, the village of Morjim was where Goa’s first Russian tourists headed in the early noughties. These days, it tends to attract more of a mix of Brits and Indians than Russians.

Morjim Beach itself is dramatic and well worth walking in the early morning, when you may see teams of fishermen hauling giant handnets from the surf. The spit at its southern end, opposite Chapora Fort, is also a great birding hot spot. In addition, cruising the Chapora River also affords good wildlife-watching opportunities. Back on the beach, this is another hotspot for Olive ridley turtles.

Half a dozen buses a day skirt Morjim en route to Panjim, the first at 7 am. Heading the other way, you can pick up a direct bus from Panjim at 5 pm, with hourly services from Mapusa via Siolim after 11 am. They’ll drop you on the main road, a 5min walk from the beachfront area at Vithaldas Waddo.

#7 & #8 Calangute and Baga

The number one beach destination for Indian visitors, Calangute is unquestionably the state’s busiest resort. It also attracts huge numbers of Brits who come for the beautiful beach, busy bars and extremely lively nightlife.

For a touch of tranquillity, the south end of the beach around Maddo Waddo is more mellow. Meanwhile, Baga is basically an extension of Calangute, though the scenery in the far north is more varied and picturesque. Overlooked by a rocky headland draped in vegetation, a small tidal river flows into the sea at the top of the village, where brightly coloured fishing boats are moored.

Though this was still a small fishing village in the early 1990s, today the development is more like a small-scale resort on the Spanish costas. That said, beyond the rowdier bars, you’ll find a crop of excellent restaurants.

Buses from Mapusa (every 30min; 30min) and Panjim (every 15min; 45min) pull in at the market square in the centre of Calangute. Some continue to Baga, stopping at the crossroads behind the beach.

Barely a few kilometres of clifftops and parched grassland separate Anjuna from the southern fringes of Vagator.  Known as one of the best beaches in Goa.

Spread around a tangle of winding back lanes, it’s a more chilled, undeveloped resort that appeals, in the main, to southern European beach bums who return year after year.  With the red ramparts of Chapora fort looming above it, Vagator’s broad sandy beach — known as “Big Vagator” — is undeniably beautiful.

That said, if you’re looking for a place to find peace, this isn’t it, being a prime stop for bus parties of domestic tourists. For more seclusion, head to the next beach south. Backed by a steep wall of crumbling palm-fringed laterite, Little (or “Ozran”) Vagator beach is actually a string of three contiguous coves.

To reach them, you have to walk from where the buses park above Big Vagator. Alternatively, drive to the end of the lane running off the main Chapora–Anjuna road towards the Nine Bar.

From here, footpaths drop sharply down to a wide stretch of level white sand — look for the mopeds and bikes parked at the top of the cliff.  The southernmost – dubbed “Spaghetti Beach” – is the prettiest, with a string of well-established shacks.

Buses from Panjim and Mapusa, 9km east, pull in every 15min or so at the crossroads on the far north eastern edge of Vagator. From here, it’s a 1km walk over the hilland down the other side to the beach.

Stay in the most beautiful hotels, and have a knowledgeable private tour guide by your side all throughout this unique tailor-made trip to the Gems of India . Visit highlights like the Taj Mahal but also unknown areas like the villages in Rajasthan for nature, wildlife and cultural encounters

#10 Mandrem

The last unspoiled stretch of the north Goan coast, Mandrem has — so far at least — held its own against developers. For the time being, nature still has the upper hand here. Mandrem is a splendid, largely empty beach that stretches north towards Arambo from the far side of the creek that bounds Aswem.

Olive ridley marine turtles nest on the quietest patches, and you’re more than likely to catch a glimpse of one of the white-bellied fish eagles that live in the casuarina trees.

Connected by regular buses from Mapsua (9 daily; 1hr 30min), the market area at Madlamaz is easy to reach by public transport. Note that getting to the beach area is trickier as auto-rickshaws are few and far between, so ask your guesthouse or hut camp for help.

In short, for extravagant nightlife and busy beaches with a party vibe, North Goa — especially Baga and Calangute — will be your cup of Goa chai.

North Goa is also known for its shops and boutiques. Partying and splurging aside, you can also get your adventure on in North Goa. We’re talking the likes of paragliding, parasailing, kayaking, scuba diving and whooshing through the water on banana rides.

If, on the other hand, you’re seeking a more blissful beach experience, shimmy your way to South Goa. Its beaches are quieter, with a more away-from-it-all vibe, though you can still enjoy plenty of water sports, and top dolphin-watching trips. South Goa is also ideal if you want to mix a scenic beach break with some inland adventures, including jungle trekking. Or how about getting an awe-inspiring bird’s-eye view of the area on a hot-air balloon trip?

In summary, North Goa’s beaches are best for party animals, while South Goa’s beaches suit travellers seeking some seclusion.

BLACK LOGO- Try Wandering

A Complete 7-day Itinerary and Guide to Goa for First Timers

This guide to Goa is perfect for those of you planning to travel there for the first time, as it talks about the best time to visit, how to reach Goa, popular beaches in North and South Goa, where to stay for your first visit, and how to get around. Also included is Goa itinerary for 7 days.

Goa is a tropical paradise with endless white and golden-sand beaches lined with swaying palm trees. This small state in the southwestern region of India is unlike any other, with its laid-back culture balanced by its thriving nightlife. But that’s not all there is to Goa. It is a land of soothing bike rides, fascinating world heritage sites, plush resorts, friendly hostels, delectable seafood, and various forms of spiritual practices. It is definitely the most popular destination in India amongst Indian and international travellers (after the Taj Mahal, of course), as it has something for everyone.

Guide to Goa For First Timers

What is the best time to visit goa.

pasture, low-land, buffaloes, Monsoon may not be the best time to visit Goa due to flooding

March-May : These are the summer months when Goa gets unbearably muggy, with temperatures touching 40ºC (104ºF).

June – September : During these monsoon months, Goa becomes lush green. It is relatively quieter than other months. Most shacks are temporary structures that are dismantled during this period and water sports aren’t going on. But this is a charming time in Goa overall, with plenty of restaurants and activities to keep you entertained.

November–February : Winter is the peak season here. Goa, being a coastal area, is balmy while the inland parts of the country go through typical winter temperatures. The sun is always out and the cool sea breeze blows through from time to time. December is the busiest month as Goa hosts the Annual Sunburn Music Festival, which attracts people from all over. Plus, people flock in to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s holidays at this party destination.

Verdict: For your first time in Goa, you should visit during the season, Mid-October to Mid-March , so that you can see all that Goa has to offer. The shacks will be open, beach stays will be available in South Goa and the weather will be pleasant. However, the prices will be higher than any other time of the year.

How to reach Goa?

How to reach Goa? Have a fun time in a train

Goa’s international airport is situated at Dabolim, near Vasco Da Gama, and there is also a new airport in North Goa, Manohar International Airport. You can land at either of these and hire a taxi to your hotel/hostel.

While most cities in India have an organised cab service like Uber and Ola, Goa has  GoaMiles  ( now also an app) that can pass for Goa’s very own Uber. We’ve used it a few times and found cabs at a good rate. You can also opt for the taxis lined up on the road outside the airport (be prepared to bargain and ensure to set prices before the start of the trip) or prepaid taxi stands at airports that have a set price. You can always ask at your accommodation if they provide airport transfers but these might turn out to be more expensive.

Local buses in Goa are significantly cheaper but also very inconvenient, as you would have to change multiple vehicles to get to your destination in Goa. Use the local bus only if you’re on a super low budget.

Bus, Cab and Car

You can also opt to reach Goa by overnight bus or cab from major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and Hyderabad in India. If travelling by bus, Mapusa would be your de-boarding point for North Goa , Panjim for Central , and Margao/Canacona for South .

You can book your bus via Redbus .

We’ve driven it down from Pune a few times now and once from Hyderabad. The road is full of potholes as you get closer to Goa. But you’ll cross ghats and waterfalls. It is beautiful!

Goa is also well connected by train to the rest of India. The main train stations are Vasco da Gama (central), Margao (south) and Thivim (north) .

Which area to stay in Goa?

A fairly empty Baga Beach - One of the popular beaches in North Goa

Goa is divided into North and South Goa, with its capital, Panaji (popularly known as Panjim), located around the centre. For your first time in Goa, it can be confusing to decide where to stay, as different corners of the state offer different experiences. In this itinerary, you’ll be staying in both North Goa and South Goa .

Baga, Calangute, Candolim or Anjuna : This is a good option for your first time in Goa, as the area is very central, so all places to see would be close to you.

However, please note that these beaches aren’t best, as they’re the most popular in Goa. Every Tom Dick and Harry visit these beaches so the crowd is also such. However, your purpose of staying around this area is different. You’re here to enjoy the water sports, the parties, the food and maybe even shop a little.

A little further north is Anjuna. While it is not the best location to stay for this itinerary, this area has come up a lot in the past few years, so you’ll find a lot of  must-visit restaurants in Goa  around this area.

Stay Options:

Casa Cenica (2BHK in Arpora) Onastay  (2BHK in Candolim) Casa De Mezzanine (Beautiful 1BHK in Arpora) Jade by CasaFlip (2BHK in Anjuna) Beach Villa With Private pool (luxury) Canary By CasaFlip (1BHK in Anjuna).

Palolem or Agonda: For your first trip to South Goa, you should stay at one of these two beaches and explore other beaches nearby. These beaches have restaurants but yet maintain a relaxed vibe so you can enjoy time on the beach. Remember that you should only stay in South Goa beaches beach from October to March as the huts and shacks are mostly dismantled before the monsoons and built back up when the monsoons get over. Click to  know more about South Goa Beaches .

Stay Options: Jardim-a-Mar (Agonda Beach- I’ve stayed here twice) Simrose (Agonda Beach – this one is often open all-year round) Agonda Serenity Beach Villa (has a jacuzzi on porch at Agonda Beach) Agonda Island View (Agonda Beach) BunkNBrew (hostel in Palolem)

How to get around Goa?

Palolem Beach - One of the popular beaches in South Goa

Taxis are expensive in Goa and not ideal for getting around and sightseeing. Buses are quite cheap but again, inconvenient. Instead, opt for a scooter or motorbike for the duration of your stay in Goa. There is no better way to get around, as it will give you the utmost freedom. The best bit is that it is inexpensive at about Rs. 500–800 a day, depending on the season (off-season or peak), type of bike (scooters like Honda Activa, low-end bikes like Bajaj Pulsar or high-end ones, like Royal Enfield) and your haggling skills.

If you don’t want to ride a bike or moped, you can hire a car . Most offer stick shifts so if you don’t know how to drive these, finding an automatic may not be easy. However, we have always managed to find one and so should you. Economy cars usually cost about Rs. 1000–1200 per day but may go up depending on the season.

You can get a bike or car on hire easily by talking to your accommodation host or hotel.

The perfect 1 week Goa Itinerary: North and South Goa

The Goa experience is different for every individual depending on their style of travel. It’s never a one size fits all because there is simply so much to see and do. We have stayed in Goa for 2 months and have yet not seen it all. Your personalised Goa itinerary would largely depend on what you enjoy – nature, culture, beaches, partying, etc. In this 7-day Goa itinerary, we’ve tried to include a bit of everything so you can get a true feel of the different sides of Goa and decide for yourself which aspect of Goa you enjoy the most!

Day 1-2 North Goa – Watersports, Shopping, Partying

Stay near the Baga Beach/ Arpora area. Despite being crowded, it is close to a lot of North Goa tourist spots you’ll be visiting. And also, hire a scooty, bike or car. You’ll need it to get around. Prior reservations for restaurants are needed!

Day 1: Beach, Water sports, Party

Visit Baga Beach during your first time in Goa

  • Reach Goa and check into your hotel or Airbnb
  • Rent a vehicle
  • Calangute Beach for lunch at Pousada by the Beach
  • Water sports and sunset at Baga Beach
  • At night go partying at Hammerz (popular music) in the Baga Area or Las Olas (Bollywood music) at Baga Beach. Or both as they’re close by! Start at Hammerz and end at Las Olas.

Day 2: Cliffside Restaurants, Fort, Sundowner, Party

You don’t need to do all of these things mentioned below. Select the ones you wish to do based on your preferences and how much time you have. I’d recommend not partying till late this night so you can be fresh to explore Goa the next morning.

Antares View Goa

  • Wake up late this day since you’ve partied the previous night
  • Lunch:   Titlie OR Antares OR Casa Playa at Little Vagator or Felix OR Artjuna or Vinayak at Anjuna.
  • Shop: Now go shop at Anjuna Flea Market!
  • Explore Chapora Fort (The movie ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was shot here so expect it to be crowded)
  • Stay for sunset or go for a sundowner to Thalassa closeby
  • Dinner at Ida in Vagator
  • Party at one of the following – Soro (Siolim) or Romeo Lane (Little Vagator).

Day 3-4: North Goa – Culture, Heritage and Nature

Day 3: culture and heritage.

Head for a day trip to Panjim and Old Goa . On this day, you’ll get a good glimpse of Portuguese influence on Goan heritage.

Basilica of Bom Jesus

Old Goa Churches : Start with Old Goa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and see the following churches in this order:

  • St. Augustine Church Ruins
  • Basilica of Bom Jesus (the most renowned)
  • Convent of Santa Monica and The Museum of Christian Art (optional but good)
  • Se Cathedral
  • Church of St. Cajetan
  • Viceroy’s Arch
  • Our Lady of Mount Chapel (optional- for panoramic views of the Panjim area)

Ruins of the Chuch of St. Augustine is a fantastic spot to add to your Goa itinerary

Going on a tour will help you make the most of your time and understand the significance of Old Goa and its churches. It is highly recommended. We’ve taken several tours by this company and loved all of them.

Lunch : Head for either a local Goan lunch at Kokni Kanteen or Cafe Al Fresco By Cantina Bodeg a for continental food. Both are close to your next stop.

Fontainhas : After lunch, take a walk in Fontainhas, Asia’s largest Latin Quarter, which has lanes lined with houses built in the colonial style and painted in bright shades of red, yellow, green, and blue. We highly recommend seeing this area on a Latin Quarter walking tour; only then will you truly be able to appreciate the history and architecture. However, if you don’t wish to take a tour, start your walk at Maruti Mandir or Phoenix Springs, ending at the Church of Immaculate Conception. See the colourful houses, click a lot of photos at the colourful wall of Old Quarter Hostel, buy some Azulejo tile décor at Velha Goa Galleria, admire the white façade of St. Sebastian Chapel, and have some bebinca (Goan Dessert) at Confeitaria 31 De Janeiro .

goa beach places to visit

Evening: Get drinks and small bites at Antonio@31 or head for a full-fledged dinner at Black Sheep Bistro . Please check the prices of these restaurants beforehand to see if they fit your budget and make reservations beforehand. You could also go for a fun Pub Crawl instead.

Night: Later you could head to a Deltin Royale Casino (buy tickets online for the best deals) OR go back home to rest for an early morning the next day.

Book Tours in Goa

Day 4: Nature and Heritage

Chorao Island and the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary : Do this either on a tour or go by yourself. You’ll have to take a ferry from Ribandar. Don’t miss the famous Mangrove Broadwalk. It is beautiful. We haven’t been here yet but can’t wait to go!

Lunch: Lazy Goose , Nerul. Reserve the table with the lake view if you can.

Depending on the time you start the day, see one/two of the following attractions. Choose one museum and one fort:

  • Houses of Goa Museum (do this only after a walking tour of Fontainhas; otherwise, nothing will make any sense) OR Museum of Goa (modern art tinged in Goan history).
  • Aguada Fort (great for sunsets but crowded) OR Reis Magos Fort (relatively less known and beautiful).

Reis Magos Fort is a hidden gem in North Goa.

Have dinner in the Candolim, Calangute, or Baga area. There are plenty of good restaurants.

A Reverie : Fine Dining Toro Toro : Continental/Goan Yazu – Pan Asian Beach Club: Asian

Day 5-6: South Goa – Beaches and relaxation

Day 5: spice plantations, iconic restaurants, relaxation.

Now, head to South Goa. Stay at Agonda or Palolem Beach- both are fantastic beaches for your first time in Goa.

But on your way, you have the option of making a few stops.

Visit Spice Plantations- A top suggestion for our Goa Travel Guide Blog

  • Sahakari Spice Plantation: Wonder why the Portuguese were so fascinated by Goa? The answer lies in the tantalising smell and flavours of spices like Cardamom, Cinnamon, Cloves, Allspice, Cumin, etc. See how these spices grow and learn about them. End with a local buffet lunch at the plantation. I found the experience very interesting and learned a lot. You can buy the ticket on reaching there.
  • Iconic Restaurants: If you’re not in the mood for the above, stop at Martin’s Corner or Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch. They are both very renowned.

Check into your hotel and use this day to do nothing and just relax on the beach, see the sunset, etc. Otherwise, you could also choose to head to Sundowner Palolem (Bar) for a sundowner!

Day 6: Beaches and Viewpoints

Today is going to be a long day of beach hopping.

Cola Beach: Start your day at Cola Beach. It’s a bit of a hike down to the beach. You can even take the jeep to the beach to save time and effort but it’ll cost a bit. Cola Beach is famous for its lagoon, where you can swim and kayak. You can have lunch here before heading to your next stop.

Kakolem Beach: This beach has a waterfall. Yes, you read that right. ( you can skip this beach if you’re running short on time or want to take it a bit slow).

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Modi & Trisha – Travel Couple (@trywanderingmore)

Cabo De Rama Fort and Cabo De Rama Viewpoint for sunset . Both are gorgeous spots with fantastic views – you’ll love the sunset here. You can also choose to have a meal and drink at the Cape Goa restaurant near the viewpoint before heading back to your hotel.

Day 7: Butterfly Beach and Palolem/Agonda Beach

Agonda Beach in South Goa

  • Butterfly Beach : It’s a beautiful secluded beach. You can hike it to the beach or go via boat but I’ll suggest going as early as possible to avoid crowds.
  • Palolem/Agonda Beach : For lunch head to either of these beaches that you’re not staying at. At Palolem, you can have lunch at Dropadi by the beach and at Treetop Tava or Zest (vegan cafe) at Agonda. Walk around the beach later afterwards.

Depart for home this evening or the next morning!

But do not forget to book your tours in goa before you get there!

Tips to Stay Safe in Goa

This guide to Goa would be incomplete if I didn’t mention tips to stay safe there. Goa is really welcoming and local-friendly. But because it is a  thriving party location and has people travelling from all over, you should take care of the following, especially if you’re a woman.

  • Don’t hitchhike.
  • If you’re a woman travelling solo, preferably rent a car. If you’re a woman travelling in a group, bikes will do.
  • Always get a video of the vehicle hired to avoid being ripped off on returning the vehicle.
  • Don’t go out with people you don’t know and never go to parties alone.
  • Watch your drink.
  • Try to stay vigilant, even when drunk.
  • Some Indian men can assume friendliness as flirting.
  • Be cautious of theft at your accommodation. Huts can easily be broken into.
  • Drugs are available abundantly in Goa. Avoid getting stuck in the middle of a drug racket.
  • Avoid drunk driving. It is being monitored by the police more strictly than before.

Don’t let these scare you. I (Trisha) have  travelled solo to Goa  and also with my girlfriends and had an absolutely fantastic time. Most of these tips should be adhered to anywhere in the world. Here is a complete list of  ways to stay safe while travelling alone .

Wrapping up

Goa is a place that you can never get enough of. With each visit, you discover something new – a secret beach, a quaint café, a shack with amazing music, a magnificent fort, and so on. We have visited Goa about five times for short periods – with different people, as different people in different phases of our lives, or wanting something different from our trip- and Goa has never let us down. We are sure you will be taken by the charm of Goa and not want to leave just like the hippies in their heydays. Hope you found this Goa Travel Blog useful and have an amazing first trip to Goa. Cows on the baga beach: only in India: strange things about Goa

By the shore of Arabian Sea, Goa, a small Indian state sits pretty on the Western coast. Aside numerous pretty beaches dotting the sea, Goa unfolds luminous layers of history for a curious soul. A walk on the old Goa’s narrow cobbled (and UNESCO heritage) streets tells volume on the 450 years of Portuguese colonial past. Tambi Surla, a Shiva temple hidden on in the forest of Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary has stories to tell from another era. Beyond the sunny long stretched shore of Baga and Candolim, Goa keeps her secrets in the lagoons and backwaters of Mandovi river. It had always been my dream to travel to Goa for seven days. When I finally did, I wished if only I would have had another couple of weeks to explore all the splendors the state has on offer.

7 days in Goa needs to be allocated wisely!

Just to give a rough idea before I explain this 7 days in Goa Itinerary further, Goa can be segmented in 4 parts. This includes the most beautiful beaches of Goa . You may explore some of them in a long weekend vacation to Goa as well!

  • Baga and Calangute: The two beaches on the North Goa are strategically located closeby. This is where maximum number of tourists visit. These beaches are usually crowded on tourist season (super crowded on long weekends). However, there are plenty of activities, cafes, places to stay. Expect to pay tourist price for everything.
  • North Goa : Beyong Baga, there are beautiful beaches at the wee end of the north. Consider Arambol, Ashwem, Mandrem. They remain pristine and away from the hawk eye of vendors.
  • South Goa : Away from everything, South Goa holds the true secret of freedom, which gave Goa its fare share of fame. beaches, forts, hikes and plenty of unexplored regions lies here. If you seek quaint, you must visit South Goa!
  • Panaji : The capital of Goa, houses only a couple of local beaches. Panaji is where you will be heading if you are in Goa for work. Despite a lack of beach life, Panaji is famous for old Latin quarters, UNESCO heritage churches and vibrant local life.

Day 1: Reaching Goa & Stay at Baga

Stay at Baga, Dine by the beach

Assuming you are flying into Goa, you are ideally to reach Dabolim airport at the start of the day. If you are late, say reaching by 10 pm or so, it may be a challenge to get a mode of public transport to Baga. It is best if you get in touch with you accommodation provider.

Kadamba line of AC bus fleet runs at least till 6 pm. However, public transport in Goa is still in its nascent stage.

If you are traveling by train, you have plenty of cabs to hire from the station itself. indian railway stations are identical that way.

It will take at least an hour to reach from airport to Baga.

Reserve this day for rendezvous with the beach. Expect a glorious sunset.

Secure a seat by the beachside restaurants. Ratnakar is a fine choice if you like sheesha and alcohol with high streaks of energy. Tito’s is more famous among the tourists. Do make a reservation before you visit.

Yab Yum Resort: Eco resorts in Goa

Alternatively , Goa also houses India’s only casino ships close to its shoreline. Since gambling is prohibited on Indian land, these casino ships are permanently anchored on the sea. They ensure even the rough waves of monsoon very well. I visited Deltin Royal Cruise on the fateful night of Cyclone Kyarr and did not feel a thing. The next morning, the fallen coconut trees of the Ashwem beach narrated the story.

Anyway, experiencing a cruise liner is a prized deal. The ship has various games on-board and forms of entertainment aside a large buffet. Sparkling goblets of wine galore everywhere. I did not find the food amusing though. If you like to party the night away, the Cruise liners of Goa will be your best choice!

Day 2: Birding at Salim Ali Sanctuary, Divar Island & Latin quarter at Old Goa UNESCO sites

Birding and heritage walk in Old Goa

Since Goa will have you for good seven long days, we will allocate a day for the hinterlands of the coastal state.

Wake up early and head towards the Divar island, Goa’s largest riverine island on Mandovi river. Ironic because in Konkani language, Divar means small.

Home to an exclusive high class wellness resort Mercure Devaaya, Divar island is intense on local heritage. Timeless Portuguese bungalows sleep under the shadow of banyan trees. Old churches and quaint little sleepy neighborhood covers Goa’s Mantra for peaceful life, Susegad.

Next to Divar island, lies Chorao island , connected by Ribandar ferry. Chorao island houses the famed Dr. Salim Ali Bird sanctuary. I think this can be a great educational experience for kids too. From mangroves to crocodile and mud-skippers & crabs, all join in to celebrates the fast depleting bird population.

Best time for birding at Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary: 6 am to 8 pm. “Afternoon no bird”, told me the guard at Mercure Hotel.

Some species of Birds that can be seen at Chorao island: Brahminy Kites, Egrets, Heron, Little Black Cormorants, Paradise fly catcher, Kingfishers, woodpeckers, Drongo etc.

No cost for passengers on the ferry. INR 10 for vehicle, in case you are bringing in a cycle. There is a ferry at 6:20 am.

If you reach early, you will find a guide, who shows around the island on a private boat and charges a fee.

Old Goa: UNESCO heritage sites: Velha Goa

On the way back, make a stop at Old Goa. Also known as Velha Goa, this is listed as WORLD UNESCO heritage site for cultural heritage of its numerous churches! It is also one of the first seats of Catholic Christianity in India.

Goa, during the rule of Portuguese was hailed as the Rome of the east. One look at the remnants of the Old Capital of the Portuguese in India, and you will know why.

Velha Goa houses some of the country’s finest cathedrals and Churches. Be it the whitewashed Se cathedral or the humongous Basilica of Bom Jesus, they are grand in structure, and stand witness to Goa’s regal past. A catastrophic plague outbreak and subsequent invasions led to Velha Goa being abandoned.

There are plenty of other churches and historical areas to be visited in close vicinity. Here is a list of Old Goa’s famed churches:

  • Convent of Our Lady of Angels
  • Church of Our Lady of the Rosary
  • St. Augustine Tower
  • Agustinian Convent
  • Church of St. Cajetan
  • Mill Stones of Gun Powder Factory
  • Museum Of Christian Art

Old goa has beautiful Hotels and Home stays available for rent. Check out here .

Take care while exploring the area, especially if you are on your own. The narrow alleys and old houses are often prone to snake attacks.

Fontainghas: Portuguese Houses in Goa. At Mercure Devaaya resort

Head towards Fontainhas , the Latin Quarter of Goa. This is the last stop before you are heading back to the beach at Baga.

Often termed as the Old Quarter or Latin Quarter of Goa , Fontainhas houses Old Portuguese Bungalows that are painted with a riot of color. Do not be surprised if they resemble like one quaint little town from an obscure European countryside. The houses has old school wall sized glass window, panes of which is colored in white. Oftentimes, an Azulejos tiles adorn the gate.

There are two beautiful eateries at Fontainhas. They are, Venite Bar and Viva Panjim . Both are quirky and very photogenic (okay, Instagrammable places in Goa). Google both and choose where you wanna visit. Joseph Bar remains as one old world wonder at Fontainhas! If you are craving for good Konkani cuisine, head towards Saib . I love their fish Thali. Awadh House is one of the better places to eat in Panjim if you are craving fro delectable Awadhi cuisine of North. It differs from the Punjabi Thalis to a large extent so try if you are a meatlover.

Truth is, I have seen neighborhoods like Fontainhas in multiple places while exploring the interiors of Goa. However, Fontainhas has opened its arm for tourists, with beautiful galleries, guest houses, and cafes and is located strategically in Panjim. You will not get these benefits in the rest of old neighborhoods in Goa, though they seemed to be more rustic and authentic.

The best part of Fontainhas is, you can retire here for a day, if you can let go the call of the beach. A few famous home stays at Fontainhas are: La Maison , the Caravela Homestay , Abrigo Fontainhas , Mateus Boutique Hotel, the White Balchao . A good Hostel in this area is the Old Quarter .

Check here for more stay near Panaji .

Considering it is a long day since early morning, it is recommended to put up at Fontainhas. However, if you have to, you can be back at Baga or Calangute. Try to make it before the sunset so that you have beautiful view of the setting sun behind ocean.

Baga has a number of beachside accomodation. Feel free to check the may. I would recommend a few based on previous experiences: Casa Cubo , Goa Beach House , Casa De Goa Boutique Resort.

Day 3: Beach Hopping to North Goa, Visit a night Market

Explore beaches of North Goa: Vagator, Anjuna, Morjim, Ashwem, Mandrem, Arambol

The day starts with exploring the beaches of North Goa. Rent a bike and start early. Things you need for a bike rental: 1. Government ID for deposit. You get it back once you return the bike, with fuel recharged. 2. INR 250 per day as rental fee (seasonal variation is expected) 3. Goa, like the rest of India, drives on the left of the road

Paved highway stretches till the wee end of the state border. You can ride as far as you want. Make pit stops on the way for a quick sugar cane drink, or snap a postcard of the rural huts adorned with floral design. You can take a detour off the highway and make pit-stops among the coconut groves for that quintessential Instagram shot.

Originally, it was shot in ar Parra. I am talking about the famous Goa scene from the Bollywood movie, Love you Jindagi, where Alia Bhat cycles amidst pristine verdant valley dotted with coconut trees with a hill at the backdrop. Now the village is raged with tourist footfall and is on the verge of charging tourists an entry fee.

I suggest skip Parra and look out for a similar setting off the main road, which lies plenty in Goa. Drive towards up north till you reach Vagator beach. The cliff hides the moon-shaped beach from prying eyes of the world.

From Vagator, head towards Morjim beach. Morjim is a rocky beach. Tidal waves bare up the sandy shore in day time. If you are looking for a beach to swim, head towards Ashwem. I stayed by the Ashwem beach at Yab Yum Resort for a couple of days and vouch for the relaxing vibe here. It is a crescent shaped beach, great for swimming. The waves swell well and make it a choice for surfers too.

I suggest stop at the La Plage for lunch. The beachside restaurant serves great French cuisine.

If you want to explore more beaches up north, you have Mandrem and Arambol on the same coast line. Saddle up the bike and wizz past green patches of verdant valley, cow shades, backwaters, dry river beds. You have reached the last wilderness of Goa!

Heading back to Baga from this area is a good 1.5 hours drive. Road is good. I have even seen traffic jams on certain days post sunset. In this route, there are 4 scenic spots to watch the sunset. You choose one based on your preferences.

Sunset points:

  • Chapora Fort (of Dil Chahta Hain movie fame) for adventurers
  • Sunset point at Anjuna for those who love a rocky beac
  • Romantic sundowner at the Thalassa Cafe, small Vagator beach
  • Arambol Beach where sunset takes place in the rhythm of iconic drum circle by the last remaining hippie trail (Far off from Baga hence be prepared for a long drive back home)

On the way back, make it a point to stop at the night markets of Calangute. You may also plan a visit to the iconic Anjuna Flea market which runs every Wednesday from 9am to 6pm. Once a place where Hippies traded their exotic European made items, now is flooded with Chinese products, swimwear and costume jewelry.

Once you are back in Baga, rest for a while. For dinner, head out to Souza Lobo. Now running by the third generation of a local family, Souza Lobo is a beach side iconic bar and served amazing cheese baked crab. Highly recommend.

Day 4: Indulge in some watersports & reach South Goa

Fort Aguada, Sinquerim beach, Travel to South Goa

This is the last day in North Goa for this one week itinerary. To make the most of it, we will let our adrelanine rush through! Today, we will flirt with the crazy waves of Arabian sea.

From Baga, head straight towards Aguada beach. The Portuguese Fort stands erect for centuries keeping a close eye against enemy invasion. Aguada is also famed for filling ship tanks with potable water in olden days.

A four storey light house stand at the end of Aguada. Explore the fort and find a a way to the Sinquerim beach which lies next to Aguada.

fort aguada: itinerary for 7 days in Goa

Watersports at Sinquerim Beach

People from all over India head towards Sinquerim beach for a number of watersports. From benign banana boat to dangerous jet jet ski, you name it and you get it! Kitesurfing, parasailing etc takes place too.

I suggest go for parasailing. You fly high over the Arabian sea, with the Aguada fort on left and endless ocean on the other side. It is simply breathtaking.

Prices vary depending on demand and seasonal footfall. Also, water sports activity is closed during monsoon owing to killing wind and swells. we paid INR 2000 per head back in 2017 for parasailing.

Heading towards Palolem Beach, South Goa

It is time to head towards South Goa now. While South Goa does not match up to the North Goa when it comes to party or lively vibes, it hides stretches of pristine, verdant land and some of the finest beaches of Indian subcontinent.

From the Central bus station at Panjim, bus ply towards Margaon in South Goa till 6 pm. It charges a nominal INR 30/50. You can also rent a car or a bike and drive towards Palolem in south. On the way, make it a point to stop at the ruined fort of Cabo De Rama. If you can make it during Sunset, you will be getting pristine shots! Cabo De rama is one of the most offbeat things to do in Goa.

7 days in Goa, an offbeat itinerary

Day 5: Beach day at Palolem & Patnem

A relaxing beach day in Goa by the world famous Palolem beach

From Yoga to Cow watching to boat-ride to catch a glimpse of the Dolphins, you have an entire day to relax and soak in the glorious sun in Goa on this day! In this 7 day long itinerary of Goa, this is probably the first day of a beach living.

As we say, “Der Aye par Durast Aye.” It came late but it came in style!

One of the leading reporting agency listed Palolem as Top 20 places to visit in Asia or sorts, you know what I mean. Ever since, a number of tourists head towards Palolem and long for a stay by the coveted beach hut. Colorful bamboo made beach huts adorn the sea-shore. With tourists came shops and cafes too.

goa beach places to visit

However, Palolem remains significantly off the beat beach destination in Goa, compared to Baga or Calangute. Tourist footfall has not yet disrupted local life. Early morning, you can see fishermen busying themselves for the day’s toil. A dog and a cow will join you at the beach as you tan yourself. Overall, it remains one of the laid beach beaches in Goa and feels nice.

In the evening, walk towards, Patnem, a smaller and lesser known beach located close by. I think it is 10 minutes walk. It is beautiful nonetheless.

Day 6: Choose a day trip between Dudhsagar or Karwar

Dudhsagar Waterfalls embodies what monsoon does to the state of the Goa, with its lush green dense surrounding amidst the steep of the Wetern Ghats and four tiered cascading flow of white water, meaning ocean of milk. Located at Mollem, South Goa, Dudhsagar calls for a day trip and trekking up the hill to experience something ethereal. The waterfall is shared between the states of Karnataka and Goa.

It is located by the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. A few spice plantation and a farm stay is located close by too. Tambi Surla, a twelfth century Shiva temple is located here.

If you are heading towards Goa from Bangalore by train, make a stop at Castle Rock. From Pune or Mumbai, stop at Kulem. Shared Jeep goes till the waterfall if you are not too keen to trek the entire distance. Also, there is a daily cap on the number of people allowed to visit, especially during monsoon. Do take an account for that while planning for Dudhsagar trekking.

The trekking is through dark long tunnel made a century ago, now abandoned. Lifeless train tracks kiss the ground. Aroma of fresh rain makes one dizzy. You reach the fall and reach a small natural pool, where swimming is allowed. You can even change to a swimsuit.

If you are journeying by train through Konkon coast, you will get a full view of the falls. It looks spectacular during comsoon. earlier train used to stop for a few minutes. However, trains just slow down these days and do not stop.

Usually fed by torrential rain, Dudhsagar loses its glory during dry season. Though the trek is rewarding nonetheless.

Dudhsagar Falls

Alternatively, visit the Karwar Beach

“The sea beach of Karwar is certainly a fit place in which to realize that the beauty of Nature is not a mirage of the imagination, but reflects the joy of the Infinite and thus draws us to lose ourselves in it. Where the universe is expressing itself in the magic of its laws it may not be strange if we miss its infinitude; but where the heart gets into immediate touch with immensity in the beauty of the meanest of things, is any room left for argument?” Rabindranath Thakur

If you are not too keen on trekking to Dudhsagar Falls or traveling during turbulent monsoon, I suggest drive towards Karwar. Located by the coast of Uttara Karnataka, Karwar is an untouched region, where local flavor is very strong. It is only half an hour’s drive from Palolem. It is where kali river meets Arabian sea.

Karwar has a beach named after Rabindranath Thakur. Tagore beach, as they call it, also houses the annual three days Karwar festival. For me that is reason enough to fall in lve with Karwar.

You can also visit nearby pristine islands, provided low tide, and a ruined fort named Sadashivgar.

Kurle Ambat , the delightful Crab Masala of Konkan region is a must have while traveling in Karwar. Also, the iconic Gadbad ice cream, where bits of fresh fruit tease cold cream gently in a tunbler! Hotel Amrut is particularly famous for sea food platter. The ghee roasts and sukka tells you that you are truding a fine border area, close to Goa yet so not Goa!

Karwar has plenty of water sports but rates are cheaper than Goa. The beach also houses INS Chapal Warship museum. INS Kadamba (named after the Kadamba dynasty of the region) is Indian naval base located at Karwar.

Day 7: Beach day & Return

The seventh day in Goa beckons. The seven days in Goa whizzed past, right?

I know. Goa always does this. She akes up for a tremendeous trip and only leaves you wanting more of Goa.

If you are roadtripping in Goa and live somewhere down south, afternoon is a good time to start. If you are headed back towards Mumbai or the airport, you need to pack up early. Palolem is is 60 KM away from Dabplim. On a good day, it is a 90 minutes drive. But we suggest account for another hour extra. Dabolim is a small airport and sometimes the queue can get painfully long.

Assuming the flight/train is scheduled at night, you still have the morning to explore a few more beaches of Goa. It is all the more possible since the drive is through the coastal route.

Following are the beaches you can stop by while heading back to the airport.

  • Agonda beach
  • Colva beach
  • Betul beach
  • Varca beach
  • Benaulim beach

Instead of beach hopping, you can also make a quick day trip to the nearby Butterfly beach from Agonda. Secluded by high cliffs, Butterfly beach can only be accessed by a boat. It looks a lot like a small lagoon with clear water. Butterfly beach is famous for Sunset views.

Agonda has plenty of good places to eat. I love Little Plantain leaf in Agonda. Love Bite is a great choice too for cozy vibes.

If you have a little longer than 7 days in Goa, I suggest follow this itinerary but spread it evenly. Keep a day to explore the beaches of south. Take two days to relax by Palolem beach and one extra day at Ashwem beach in North. Thus, you get to enjoy Goa for 10 days and indulge in the best things to do in the sunshine state. This itinerary equally covers the heritage and beaches of Goa.

If you are heading to Goa during monsoon, may be add one day for Divar island. Monsoon in Goa makes plenty of beaches off limit for tourists with coast guards barring entry. They are justified because Arabian sea becomes a demon with undercurrent pulls etc. Shacks do not open either. That said, monsoon in Goan hinterlands is breathtaking with lush green Western ghats and hidden waterfall trails!

Loved this Goa itinerary? Pin it for later use!

I’ve never been parasailing but it looks so fun! Especially getting a view of the beautiful beaches.

Goa looks so beautiful to visit! Dudhsagar Waterfalls looks stunning with the train tracks that go beneath it. The food there looks really yummy as well.

Dudhsagar Falls looks particularly incredible – it kind of reminds me of Multnomah Falls in the US with the way the bridge goes across it. We didn’t make it to Goa on our India trip, but southern Indian food is one of my all-time favorites so next time we’ll definitely be checking this region out!!

What to See and Do in Goa

goa beach places to visit

Goa is one of the most well-known tourist destinations in India. People travel from far and wide to this small state for its diverse mix of beaches, adrenaline activities, parties, nature, and history. One of the best ways to see all that Goa India has to offer is by hiring a motorbike or scooter and exploring at leisure. These places to visit in Goa are popular.

Want to go beyond the usual tourist attractions? Check out  11 Cultural Things to Do in Goa .

Goa's long stretch of sandy coastline is renowned for its multitude of beaches. There's something on offer for everyone, from luxury resorts to makeshift huts and trance parties to tranquility. The Goa India beach that's right for you will depend on the kind of experience you want to have. Want water sports? Head to Baga. Want to hang with the hippies. Try Arambol. Prefer isolation? Agonda or Patnem might be the beach for you.

The Anjuna flea market is held every Wednesday from morning until evening except during the monsoon season  on the southern end of Anjuna Beach. The market has exploded in size and attracts people from all over Goa. It's now got over 500 stalls and is still growing. You'll find a huge assortment of goods there, but make sure you bargain. After a day of shopping until you drop, head over to Curly's beach shack and take in the sunset scene there.

If one market isn't enough for you, the very hip Saturday Night Market and Mackie's Night Bazaar, both in the Arpora Baga area, are also worth checking out. They offer entertainment, including live music, as well as an eclectic range of food.

Latin Quarter and Portuguese Mansions

Capital city Panaji is worth visiting for its Fontainhas neighborhood. Declared a UNESCO Heritage Zone in 1986, it gets its name (meaning "fountain") from the fountain at the foot of the hill. You'll be transported back in time as you wander past colorful old Portuguese homes, belonging to the last surviving Portuguese families of Goa. Narrow winding streets and lanes, quaint shops, art galleries, bakeries, and restaurants give it an undeniable charm. Plan your visit with this essential guide to Fontainhas.

Once the magnificent Portuguese capital of Goa India, these days all that remains of Old Goa is a handful of imposing churches and cathedrals. They are among the largest in Asia, though. Some of the buildings have now become archaeological museums, and provide a fascinating display of Goa's history.

One of the most interesting buildings in Old Goa is the Convent and Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, built in 1521. Just opposite is the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which contains the preserved remains of the body of Saint Francis Xavier, a revered missionary and the patron saint of Goa. The body is shown to the public every 10 years (the last exhibition happened in early 2015). Old Goa is situated not far from Panjim, Goa's current capital.

Goa Tourism's open-top Hop on Hop Off Bus departs from Panjim and provides an inexpensive way of getting to Old Goa. Tickets cost 300 rupees.

Spice Plantations

Another highlight of a trip to Goa India is the spice plantations in the dense jungle around Ponda. Goa's lush tropical climate makes it an ideal place to grow spices. The spice farms are open to visitors. You can take a guided tour, enjoy the picturesque scenery, and finish with a spicy lunch.

One of the oldest and most acclaimed plantations in Goa is the 130-acre Sahakari Spice Farm , located around 40 minutes from Panaji. Others include the Tropical Spice Plantation , Savoi Plantation , and Pascol Spice Village . Accommodations, and other activities such as elephant or boat rides, are offered at many of the farms. If you're interested in Ayurvedic herbs and organic farming, don't miss Sai Abyss Herbarium, run by an Ayurvedic doctor. It's situated just outside Savoi-Verem village.

Wildlife Sanctuaries

Goa India isn't just all about beaches and churches. The state's location along the mountainous Western Ghats is home to an array of birds and animals. Around 20 percent of Goa consists of wildlife sanctuaries (about 290 square miles). They're open all year round, although October to March are the best months to visit.

The two main sanctuaries are Bhagwan Mahavir (of which Mollem National Park is a part) and Cotigao. On the fringe of the Mollem National Park, you'll find the imposing Dudhsagar Falls, where the water rages down from a huge height during and just after the monsoon season. Accommodations, provided by the Goa Forest Department, are available at both sanctuaries. For a very eco-friendly stay, try a mud hut at the Shanti Nature Resort in Mollem National Park.

15 Best Places to Visit in India, According to Travel Experts

F rom the alpine meadows of Kashmir to the palm-fringed beaches of Goa, these are some of the subcontinent’s most enchanting destinations.

As a former longtime Delhiite and frequent traveler to India, people often ask me what the country is like. I never know how to respond, for trying to sum up a nation as vast and diverse as India feels impossible. So, instead, I asked a few experts for their insights.

“If you visit India, you feel you have visited several countries, as every part is different,” says Mohd Shafi Billo, an inbound tour operator who specializes in helping international travelers plan their trips to the country. “It’s an exceptional destination, thanks to its culture, history, and inclusiveness of different people from different faiths, and it has everything to offer, from forts to mausoleums, wildlife tours to mountain adventures.”

Shoba Rudra, founder and partner at hospitality consultancy Rare India , agrees. “The country is living a dynamic moment in history, ever-changing,” she says. “What's constant, however, is the vibrant culture lived through its festivals, cuisine, heritage, crafts, and performing arts.”

While it would take years to see it all, India is an approachable destination — if you can narrow things down. With that in mind, here are 15 of the best places to get you started on your sojourn to the subcontinent.

Stretching along the southernmost part of India’s Malabar Coast, the tropical state of Kerala entices visitors with its marshy backwaters, which most people visit on overnight houseboat adventures. These popular cruises “showcase lush landscapes and peaceful villages, and [give visitors] a glimpse into local life amid tranquil waters and picturesque surroundings,” says Billo. While the backwaters are a star attraction, the state offers much more to explore, from the tea plantations of Munnar, known for its cool climate and seemingly endless rolling hills, to the historic city of Kochi, celebrated in equal measure for its rich coastal history and contemporary art scene . The beaches aren’t too shabby, either. “North Kerala is also famous, as the Malabar Coast is where the spice trade flourished,” says Rudra. “The coastal area is picturesque and this region is still unexplored.”

On the opposite end of the country from Kerala, Kashmir offers entirely different — but equally captivating — landscapes. With its alpine climate, evergreen trees, and snowy winters, Kashmir is often likened to a mini Switzerland . Famed 13th-century Sufi poet Amir Khusrau once proclaimed in Farsi, “If there is a paradise on earth, it is this,” and he may have been onto something. At the heart of it all is Srinagar, Kashmir’s capital city, which is known for its elegant gardens and watery centerpiece, Dal Lake. “Highlights include staying on a houseboat or taking a shikara [traditional Kashmiri boat] ride,” says Billo, who hails from the area. Don't leave without indulging in wazwan , an opulent, meat-heavy feast that can feature up to three dozen dishes in one sitting.

Occupying a high-altitude plateau in the northernmost reaches of India, Ladakh is characterized by otherworldly landscapes and big skies, punctuated by palatial stupas and monasteries. Many visitors come to Ladakh’s capital, Leh, during the short summer tourist season, but this surreal region offers plenty more to experience beyond the city. Billo suggests visiting the Nubra Valley, an isolated part of the old Silk Road that’s only accessible by crossing Khardung La, one of the world’s highest motorable passes. “The valley offers a glimpse into Ladakh's unique geography and cultural diversity with monasteries, quaint villages, and apricot orchards,” says Billo. The region is also rich with unusual wildlife, from elusive snow leopards to the scaled-down Bactrian camels that originated in the steppes of Central Asia.

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand

On the banks of the sacred Ganges River, the holy city of Rishikesh has held a place in the hearts of spiritually minded travelers — both from India and abroad — for generations. It’s the self-proclaimed “yoga capital of the world,” with a mix of traditional ashrams (spiritual rest houses) that cater largely to Hindu pilgrims and yoga centers that attract international visitors with teacher-training courses and meditation retreats. If you’re not into yoga, you’ll still find plenty to do here. Popular activities include visiting the ruins of the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram (dubbed the Beatles Ashram in honor of its most famous former residents) to whitewater rafting adventures on the mighty Ganges. It’s also a great place for a wellness getaway, and nearby Ananda in the Himalayas was voted one of Travel + Leisure readers' favorite international spas in 2023.

Auroville, Tamil Nadu

If you’re looking for a place that’s unlike anywhere else in India — or, frankly, the world — head to the intentional community of Auroville in South India. This UNESCO-recognized global township was founded in the 1960s with the goal of "realizing human unity," beyond the illusory divisions of creed or nationality, and it's home to generations of residents from around the world. Many visitors come for an hour or two, just long enough to view Auroville’s spiritual center — the golden, dome-shaped Matrimandir . However, it’s worth sticking around a bit longer to get a feel for what the community is about. As Akash Kapur, who grew up in Auroville and authored " Better to Have Gone " and " India Becoming ," puts it: "Come to Auroville if you're interested in alternative societies, sustainable living, or spirituality, but try not to just drop in for a few hours (as many do), and instead spend some time here, really getting to know the people and their work. The community rewards sustained immersion."

Andaman Islands

Although most people associate the crystalline waters of the Andaman Sea with Thai island getaways, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in this tropical region are under Indian control. This little stretch of paradise is full of gorgeous shorelines, but most visitors devote their vacations to the island of Swaraj Dweep (formerly known as Havelock). The most popular beach on the island is Radhanagar Beach , which offers just over a mile of white sand sandwiched between tropical jungle and warm, transparent waters. Getting to this remote island requires a bit of gumption: You'll need to fly from the Indian mainland to Port Blair on South Andaman Island, then catch a ferry or charter a seaplane for the final stretch. While visitors are welcome on many islands in the chain, a few — including secluded North Sentinel Island — are off-limits.

While many travelers see India’s capital as a jumping-off point for visiting further-afield destinations, it’s worth sticking around for a while to truly appreciate what Delhi has to offer. There’s certainly never a dull moment in this busy metropolis, whether you’re shopping for handicrafts at one of its numerous markets or learning about medieval and Mughal history at one of its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Humayun's Tomb, Qutb Minar, and Red Fort. Although Delhi is undeniably rambunctious, it also has a quieter, more peaceful side that you can find amidst the trees and 15th-century tombs of Central Delhi’s Lodi Gardens or in the quiet interiors of the Baháʼí Lotus Temple.

Taj Mahal, Agra, Uttar Pradesh

Many travelers to India put the 17th-century Taj Mahal at the top of their list. This white marble mausoleum is easily India’s most recognizable structure — and it’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World . This popular attraction also has a romantic backstory. “This iconic symbol of love is renowned for its architectural beauty, intricate marble work, and the captivating story behind its creation by emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal,” notes Billo. The bodies of the emperor and his wife remain interred in the Taj to this day.

Jaipur. Rajasthan

The capital of Rajasthan and one-third of North India’s popular Golden Triangle tourist route (which also includes Agra and Delhi), Jaipur is a must-visit for those who love architecture and shopping. “The Pink City, as it's nicknamed, offers a rich cultural heritage, stunning [landmarks] like Amber Fort, vibrant bazaars, and intricate handicrafts,” says Billo. Many of Jaipur's key attractions are found in the historic walled part of the city, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Highlights include Jantar Mantar (a collection of oversized — and fully functional — astronomical instruments dating to the 17th century) and Hawa Mahal, or Palace of the Winds, a honeycomb-shaped palace designed with tiny windows that allowed air to flow freely through its interior.

Jodhpur, Rajasthan

Dubbed the Blue City because of the cerulean-colored buildings that extend for miles through the oldest part of town, Jodhpur has long attracted travelers eager to explore the ramparts of the larger-than-life Mehrangarh Fort. It’s also home to the grandiose Umaid Bhawan Palace , which made headlines in 2018 when Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot there. While Jodhpur’s beautiful, regal architecture is reason enough to visit, there’s more to the city than massive forts and grand palaces. “The area around the Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell in the old city is fun to explore,” says hotelier Sapna Bhatia, owner of Kaner Retreat and Jodhpur-area native. “For nature enthusiasts, there’s the Rao Jodha desert park near Mehrangarh Fort.”

Udaipur, Rajasthan

T+L readers' favorite city in Asia and second favorite city in the world , Udaipur very much fits the bill of a fairy tale destination. Nicknamed the City of Lakes, thanks to its seven lakes, this gorgeous destination is home to some of India's finest luxury hotels plus historic whitewashed palaces, including the magnificent City Palace, an 11-palace complex that houses hotels, a huge museum with an impressive collection of European crystal, and a royal residence. A short boat ride from the palace lies the 18th-century Taj Lake Palace, an opulent palace-turned-hotel in the middle of Lake Pichola. It’s a quick drive from The Oberoi, Udaivilas , a purpose-built palatial hotel with onion-domed cupolas and a moat-like swimming pool that directly connects to some of the rooms.

If you’re looking for a less-frequented, but no less amazing, alternative to more touristed states such as Rajasthan, consider Gujarat. “Under-explored but culturally rich, this state in India is a tapestry of festivals, textiles, architectural heritage, communities, and landscape,” says Rudra. Gujarat was also the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, who led the Salt March, one of his most famous acts of peaceful protest, through the state in 1930. Rudra suggests visiting the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial , which “honors the activists through murals, installations, sculptures, art, and related film.” It's also worth checking out the Kutch district, known for its distinct metal bells , which were originally used for keeping track of livestock and are now popular as decorative wind chimes.

Kaziranga National Park, Assam

The northeast Indian state of Assam is home to a treasure for wildlife enthusiasts: Kaziranga National Park . This expansive, UNESCO-listed wildlife refuge near the borders of Bangladesh and Bhutan has the largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses on the planet, providing a home to roughly 2,000 of these massive beasts. Although rhinos are the star attraction on park safaris, all sorts of animals live here, including tigers, elephants, gibbons, sloth bears, and a small number of endangered Ganges River dolphins.

Historic, glitzy, and positively gargantuan, Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) is easily one of India’s most cosmopolitan destinations. This city by the sea is the nation's financial and entertainment capital, and while you’re unlikely to rub shoulders with Bollywood stars here, you're sure to see a lot of impressive attractions in very little time. Take a boat out to Elephanta Island to explore fifth– and sixth–century rock-hewn cave temples, marvel at the grand Indo-Saracenic architecture at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus , or see thousands of clothes hanging out to dry at Dhobi Ghat, the world's largest open-air laundry. Then, head to the sleek neighborhood of Bandra West, where many of Mumbai’s best restaurants and hotels are located, including Taj Lands End, voted T+L readers' favorite city hotel in India in 2023.

India’s smallest state, Goa, is arguably its top beach destination, where long days of swimming and sunbathing turn into longer nights of partying on the sand. While Goa has been known as a hippie haven since the 1960s, it's started to shed its reputation in recent decades. It’s still very much a party state, though it also draws in families and couples in search of sea and sun, sans nightlife. It’s a great place for history buffs as well, with numerous seaside forts and UNESCO-recognized churches that were built when Goa was under Portuguese rule. And while the destination has always been loved for its fiery dishes that combine traditional Konkani ingredients with Portuguese influences, it has also emerged as a culinary hot spot , where a new generation of chefs is showcasing everything from Japanese yakitori to jackfruit tamales.
