Wow, amazed and surprised there are only a few reviews so far. I have a very close family friend who has taken a dozen trips with Beach's over the years. Very positive feedback on all accounts. My wife and I almost went on a tour for our honeymoon 30 years ago based upon our friends "then" recommendation. Things didn't come together then unfortunatley. But, this summer, for our 30th anniversary, we were going to "finally" take that honeymoon trip. Well, you know what happened Spring of 2020. No trip. Of course we are disappointed. I'm sure Beach's is disappointed too. BUT, I can say this. First of all, Beach's didn't cash my full payment check back in Feb or early March. Their policy was to take the deposit only and the rest later. They refunded that check without my asking. THEN, as they were forced to cancel the trip, they have offered full refund. No questions asked. You don't find good people running good business' like this everyday. While we have not yet been on the tour, every minute of working with Beach's has been professional and above expectations. We look forward to when we're all able to travel freely again and to when we can experience the Beach's hospitality on the road. Highly Recommended.

This review is unsolicited: I've gone on two tours with Beach's -- Central Italy in May 2005, and Corsica in September 2010. Rob Beach's business appears to be extremely complicated, and he just takes it in stride. He's a skilled rider, knowledgeable guide, he prepares very well, and when something beyond his control goes awry (as inevitably something will) he has contingency plans ready. His dry sense of humor is a bonus. All we have to do is ride, eat, and revel in beautiful scenery. The only challenge is how to take it all in. I can't say enough good things about Beach's Motorcycle Adventures and I look forward to another trip soon. -- Paul M, San Francisco East Bay

Difficult to put in words how fantastic the Adriatic Amble tour was (15 days through the Balkans/Adriatic Coast). Initially you think, that is a lot of money. Then you sign up and the information starts coming in....and there is A LOT of information....it can be overwhelming and even make you wonder just how many rules there are...is this going to be confining? You go on the first ride and any concerns vanish. The route is amazing...nothing like what you can find in the USA. It pushes you, tests your skills, and shows you the most amazing scenery. (Go Pro would have been nice to have!). You do not put on massive miles, but you still manage to be out all day. They give you routes to choose from and you can find shorter routes many of the days...or you can even modify the routes to your particular needs. Rob Beach even completely revised a route for a few of us one day so that it provided the experience we wanted! And, if you do get injured, they will do what they can so you can continue to have a great vacation and hopefully get back on the bike. I would imagine that the day trips are awesome too....but will likely leave you wanting more!

Wife and I went on a ONCE in a lifetime trip to ride the Alps on a motorcycle in 1999. Well we have been on several more tours, seeing 10 countries from the seat of a motorcycle while traveling with Beach's tours. No forced group riding, the most experienced motorcycle guide in the world and some of the best places to ride and stay makes Beach's the best there is for Motorcycle travel.

Day 2 - Tours - Honfleur

We will make our way from Tours to Normandy and make a stop at the mythic 24 hours of Le Mans circuit where we will ride an actual portion of the racetrack. We will cross some typical villages of Normandy, well known for their half-timbered houses, and stop at the Basilica of Lisieux, home of St Teresa. We will arrive for the evening in the 18th century harbor town of Honfleur.

Day 3 - Honfleur - Carentan

This will be D-Day revival day. We will stop at many major sites where this historical event took place, from the English beach of Juno and its famous Pegasus Bridge, to the breathtaking beach of Omaha and its heart-rending cemetery. Utah Beach and the Village of Ste Mere Eglise will be our final stop of the day. This was the first village liberated by the 101st Airborne Division.

Day 4 - Carentan - St Malo

We head through the countryside of Normandy towards the famous Unesco site of Mont St Michel. We will tour and have lunch at this famous monastery and then make our way to the seaside city of St Malo, a fortified town of seamen and corsairs where the discoverer of Canada, Jacques Cartier, was born. We are now in the region of Brittany, a celtic region of tradition and independence.

Day 5 - St Malo - Tours

After a stop in the medieval city of Dinan, we will head south on the edge of Brittany until we reach the Unesco Loire Valley. The Loire is the ultimate wild river of France. Castles will begin to pop up everywhere as we reach our final destination of the day, Tours.

Operation Overlord, D-Day, a very impressive, themed trip to the invasion beaches and other historical French monuments.

Frankrijk - Normandy Routekaart

Media of Normandy

About this tour: normandy, a tour to the landing beaches in normandy, france.

This motorbike tour to the Normandy Landing Beaches is an 8-day themed tour dedicated to D-Day, Operation Overlord. Operation Overlord was the code name for the invasion by the Western Allies of German-occupied Western Europe during the Second World War. Combine beautiful motorcycling in Normandy with rich history!

The outward journey (first day) and return journey (last day) you will drive on your own initiative.

Day route 1: Ypres-Dieppe | 293 km

From Ypres you drive to the coast at Veurne and from there to Dunkirk. Before WWII, this was a landmark. It was here at Dunkirk that the armies of Britain and France narrowly escaped German pursuit during the 1940 invasion. This event, known as Operation Dynamo, took place from 27 May to 4 June and is known as the miracle of Dunkirk. Navy and private individuals with their own boats (900 in total), together brought back 338,000 soldiers from the French beaches to England. The film "Dunkirke" gives a true picture of this Operation Dynamo. The Museum Du Souvenir in Dunkirk reminds us of this spectacular evacuation.

Past Audinghen, you come across 3 casemates that were part of the Atlantic Wall. Next, you pass the old town of Boulogne-sur-Mer, once a Roman port. You drive through the harbour and along the river on the D940 to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the bay of the Somme. You drive around the delta. It is one of the most beautiful nature reserves in France and an important area for (migratory) birds. The route goes through the village of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme.

Via Le Treport, a striking harbour town with chalk cliffs, you drive through the port area. Then you follow the road as close to the coast as possible to finally arrive at today's stop: Dieppe. Dieppe is known for the dramatic "test landing" by the Allies on 19 August 1942. More than 4,000 Allied soldiers, especially Canadians, were killed, wounded or taken prisoner. In Dieppe, a museum and a cemetery recall this catastrophe.

Day route 2: Dieppe-Caen | 199 km

Today, the route goes to Caen. The route to Caen goes again completely along the beautiful French coast. So, you have all the time to enjoy the views and the tourist points along the way. Just before the end of the day, you pass the first visiting point of D-Day.

You leave Dieppe and follow the coastline again. At Le Poincon, you leave the route for a special view of the rocks at Eglise Saint Valery. Views, dunes, rocks and beautiful towns alternate again. Saint-Léger is another of those towns. Here, the open area changes into a more varied landscape with forestation and differences in height. Fécamp and Etretat are beautiful towns. You drive right through them. On the big bridge, you cross the Seine at Le Havre and drive into Basse Normandie, the western part of Normandy.

Day route 3: Caen-Arromanches | 59 km

In the morning, you have the opportunity to visit the large and informative Mémorial de Caen. Then you drive to the invasion beaches. The Mémorial de Caen is a museum you really shouldn't miss. Thanks to all the information it offers, you'll get a clear overview of all the events, from the Second World War to the Cold War. Allow 2 to 4 hours for your visit to this museum. Don't forget to visit the bunker, which is accessible from the back of the museum. Permanent exhibitions are: The Second World War; D-Day and the Battle of Normandy and The Cold War. Experience shows that you will easily spend 2 hours here. After this impressive visit, you go on your way.

Day route 4: Arromanches-Cherbourg | 132 km

The next day, you continue your route along the invasion beaches. After 8 km, you pass the German artillery battery at Longues-sur-Mer. This battery was perfectly placed to withstand the landings of 6 June 1944. The guns were aimed at Omaha and Gold Beach, right in front of the landings. On D-Day, the battery fought a duel with the Allied fleet. At sunrise it was finally silenced. Now the battery is one of the best preserved in France and the only place where still the original guns stand, which were then able to shoot 45 kg grenades 22 km far. The view from the fire control post, dug into the cliff, gives a great view over the bay of the Seine. That afternoon you will pass many more stops that are very interesting, such as: Longues-sur-Mer, Pointe du Hoc, the D-Day experience centre and the WW2 museum. You spend the night in Cherbourg, the hotel is situated at the harbour. Certainly worthwhile for an evening stroll.

Day route 5: Cherbourg-Rouen | 357 km

Today you drive from Cherbourg, the start of the Road of Liberty, via Falaise to Rouen. In Cherbourg you start at km 0 of the route. From this point, you follow a part of this special route today. The N13 is a monotonous road to drive, but because the Allied armies marched on this road, we keep following it for 40 km. Every kilometre you see signs of this Voie de la Liberté.

After 40 km, the first stop is Sainte-Mére-Eglise. This place is well known for the American paratrooper who hung on the church tower here. In the middle of the town you pass Sainte-Mère-Eglise Liberation Monument. A little further on in the Airborne Museum, it is explained why the paratroopers were dropped in this area and how it ended. After the stop at Sainte-Mére-Eglise you drive further inland into Normandy. The route goes through the "pocket of Falaise" where German troops were trapped. Yet a large part of these troops could still escape.

You stay in a 4-star hotel, this hotel is within walking distance of the historic centre.

Day route 6: Rouen-Arras | 253 km

Today is the last day of routing. A smooth route through the north of France brings you again to a historic town, with a Dutch touch, namely Arras. It is a relatively short route today and that means you can use the time to visit the town at the end of this trip. The centre of Arras is simply beautiful, which is partly due to the two main squares of the city: Grand Place and Place des Héros. Both squares look un-French, but immediately remind you of the inner cities, as you mostly see in Belgium. You will see Guild houses, a belfry and a town hall that immediately reminds you of the cloth halls that you find in the western part of Belgium. Not surprising, because Arras has not always been part of France. Just after the Middle Ages, Arras, which then still had the Dutch name Atrecht, belonged to the Netherlands.

Answers to Your Questions

How much of the tour is not on paved roads.

80% of the trip is on paved roads and 20% on light off-road terrain.

What do we do on the two extra days of the trip that are not riding days?

We have a free day at the beginning and end of each trip. The first day is for flights to arrive, to get acclimated, check in to accommodation, and get the bikes. The last day is a celebration.

Do you provide insurance?

Motorcycle rental companies provide the insurance and you will need your own travel insurance too.

Is this tour suitable for two-up riding?

Unfortunately not, we allow only one rider per bike on this tour.

Do you book our flights?

We ask all riders to book their own flights, there is a 4-hour window to arrive at the meeting point. We arrange the 15-minute “hop” flight from Belize airport to Hopkins Bay, this is not included in the price and it costs approximately $150 for a round trip.

Do we need to book our accommodations?

No, we will do that for you. If you would like a list of the places where we will be staying, please contact us.

How long is the ride time per day?

We typically ride for 6 hours a day, depending on the sightseeing and breaks along the way.

What is the cancellation policy on this tour?

To reserve your spot on a tour, we require a 20% deposit at the time of booking. The tour balance must be paid in full at least 45 days prior to departure.

  • If you cancel more than 60 days before departure, the deposit will be refunded in full.
  • If you cancel 45-60 days before departure, 50% of the deposit will be refunded.
  • If you cancel within 44 days of departure, you forfeit the entire deposit and any funds we cannot recuperate from vendors.

What do we need for international travel?

Each rider will need to have a valid passport to travel internationally. Each rider must also have a license from their home country with a motorcycle endorsement. International drivers’ licenses are helpful (and encouraged) but typically not mandatory to ride in other countries. We will provide the details for riders in one-on-one prep sessions before all trips.

How much luggage can I take with me?

Regular luggage is acceptable for these trips as we will load our bikes up with our belongings at the motorcycle rental shops when we pick up our bikes. Suitcases and bags will be stored and safeguarded under lock and key while we tour. We will repack our luggage for the trip home when we return from our tour.

80th anniversary D-Day Battlefield tour

beaches motorcycle tours tours

On 6th June 1944 over 132 thousand Allied soldiers from 15 countries/regions landed on five beaches in Normandy, with over 23 thousand paratroopers landing at strategic targets inland, heralding the beginning of the end of World War Two.

These beaches would witness what remains the largest amphibious assault in history The troops on the beaches were supported by nearly 200 thousand sailors aboard nearly 7000 vessels (only 200 of which were warships), and sorties flown by thousands of aircrew in over 9000 aircraft (not counting the gliders), and 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of this remarkable undertaking.

Starting in Portsmouth, we will visit the D-Day museum on the seafront prior to your first group dinner near the mouth of Portsmouth harbour, before we follow in the troops footsteps and sail overnight from Portsmouth to Normandy.

Once disembarked we will visit all 5 beaches, Commonwealth, US and German cemeteries, the German batteries at Longues-sur-Mer, Arromanches-Les-Bains (where you can watch "Normandy's 100 Days” at the 360 Cinema) and Pointe du Hoc, Pegasus Bridge, and the new British Normandy Memorial, as well as and many other places of significance.

We spend two nights in a quality three star Hotel well located for the Normandy beaches, with parking nearby. Whether you’re going to learn more about this historic event, or on a mission to track down some family history, this is an absorbing tour.

D-Day may have been 80 years ago, but the legacy lives on in the historical sites that we will visit. Come with us and see for yourself...

Cruising past the iconic Big Sur, you’ll bask in the warm embrace of the California sun, accompanied by the invigorating touch of salty sea air on your skin. Several miles unfold with awe-inspiring views, showcasing the meeting point of the Santa Lucia Mountains and the Pacific Ocean—a mesmerizing stretch that epitomizes the beauty of the California coast.

As the day progresses, relish in the delightful warmth of a gentle breeze, and savor the spectacle of a spectacular sunset, casting hues of orange and pink across the horizon. Our route takes us through the charming beach resort of Pismo Beach before arriving in the “Danish” city of Solvang, a sister town to Aarhus. Here, we find accommodation in a Danish Gjæstgiveri, dine at an authentic Danish beer restaurant, and wake up to the delectable delights of a Danish bakery for breakfast—a delightful fusion of culture and comfort awaits.

Day 9: Solvang - Los Angeles

(Driving day 8: 238 km/149 miles)

Bid farewell to the enchanting Solvang as our journey unfolds, leading us through the scenic landscapes of southern California, Hollywood, and some of the nation’s most breathtaking vistas. Our first pause is in Santa Barbara, often hailed as America’s Riviera due to its climate and geography reminiscent of the French and Italian Riviera.

After immersing ourselves in the charm of Santa Barbara, we continue our expedition, cruising along the iconic Pacific Coast Highway 1 to reach the renowned Neptune’s Net biker restaurant in Malibu. From there, we make our way straight to the bustling metropolis of Los Angeles. Once we return the bikes and shed our riding gear, we embrace the leisurely atmosphere of the afternoon in the vicinity of the hotel.

As the day winds down, we come together for a heartfelt farewell dinner, reliving the memories of our incredible journey. With light summer clothing replacing our riding gear, we prepare for the journey home, marking the end of an unforgettable adventure along the mesmerizing West Coast.

Day 10: Departure Los Angeles - Home Travel

Music and concerts, music and concerts | foreigner’s ‘the historic farewell tour’ comes to virginia beach later this month.

Foreigner will play at the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater at Virginia Beach on Aug. 20 as part of its "The Historic Farewell Tour."

Every week, they get close to 15 million audio and video streams.

And despite having formed nearly 50 years ago, they still consistently reach an audience exceeding 80 million radio listeners each month.

Foreigner is one of the most popular rock acts in the world and is coming to Virginia Beach — perhaps, for the last time.

The band will play at the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater in Virginia Beach on Aug. 20 as part of its “The Historic Farewell Tour.”

Rock-and-roller John Waite — whose 1984 single “Missing You” peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — will open the show and will be followed by the rock band Styx, before Foreigner takes over the stage and closes the night.

Michael Bluestein, the keyboardist for Foreigner, will play with is band Aug. 20 at the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater at Virginia Beach.

“People should expect a lot of great tunes that they already know performed at high energy with a crowd singing on their feet; it’s always an exciting, sort of festive, atmosphere,” said Michael Bluestein, the band’s keyboardist.

In an interview, Bluestein, who joined Foreigner in 2008, described the band’s farewell tour as bittersweet.

He’ll miss the music, but after 16 years of averaging 80 to 100 concerts per year, Bluestein added, he and his bandmates are looking forward to some respite from constant touring.

“We’re not disappearing,” he added, saying the band still plans on playing together. “But it’s just going to be a lot less.”

Foreigner was formed in 1976 by three Americans and three Brits, and their 1977 self-titled album produced the band’s first hits with “Feels Like the First Time” and “Cold As Ice.”

Foreigner remained popular through the 1970s and 80s, releasing well-known songs such as “Hot Blooded,” “Blue Morning, Blue Day” and “I Want To Know What Love Is.”

After 100 rounds, what has LIV Golf really accomplished? Chaos and cash

Portrait of Tom D'Angelo

LIV Golf marked its 100th round Friday since the controversial league stunned the industry 26 months ago.

The idea, hatched by Greg Norman, took off once Saudi Arabia, through its Public Investment Fund, agreed to throw billions of dollars at the project.

LIV touted this venture as one that would grow golf by taking the league's unique, untraditional format globally. And while that can be questioned, what cannot be disputed is LIV has gotten the attention of the PGA Tour, and directly affected its finances and economics, and the money being directed toward golfers.

"We've changed the face of golf," Bubba Watson said Wednesday, ahead of this weekend's LIV event at Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. "So to be on that side of history is pretty special."

Watson then compared this to when Jack Nicklaus was instrumental in the first big split in professional golf that led to the forming of the PGA Tour in 1968. Nicklaus, though, strongly disagrees that the two are even related.

Scheffler can thank LIV for record earnings

Either way, Watson is spot-on when he says, "Scottie Scheffler has made a lot of money this year because of the changes that we've started putting in place."

LIV's impact on the PGA Tour has been significant. Every move the tour has made in the past two years to infuse money into the game, including the creation of Signature Events, more events with $20-$25 million purses, and pouring money into the Player Impact Program, has been a reaction to LIV and its endless stream of Saudi money.

One way to reduce the number of players jumping to LIV is to compete financially. The tour did that by pumping millions into its purses and billions into the game with a $3 billion deal with Strategic Sports Group that includes an initial investment of $1.5 billion into the launch of a commercial venture, PGA Tour Enterprises.

Scheffler has made $28.1 million this year in prize money with two $20 million purses, St. Jude and BMW championships, remaining ahead of the Tour Championship that will distribute $100 million, $25 million to the winner.

By the end of the season, Scheffler could make five to seven times what the tour's top earner made in 2020-21, the year before LIV debuted. That does not include his share of the $50 million that will be distributed through the Player Impact Program, which rewards players for brand exposure.

In 2021, Jon Rahm topped the PGA Tour money list with $7.7 million. Rahm is LIV's most recent blockbuster signing, luring the Spaniard with a reported $350 million deal that could surpass $550 million after bonuses.

Joaquin Niemann LIV's money leader in 2024

Joaquin Niemann is LIV's prize money leader in 2024 with $14.2 million through 12 of the 13 individual events. LIV concludes its season with the team championship on Sept. 20-22 at Maridoe, north of Dallas.

The prize money, though, is not the biggest lure for the handful of marquee golfers who made the jump to LIV. What got their attention was the massive contracts, especially those reportedly for at least $100 million that went to Rahm, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith.

"Things need to evolve. Things need to change," LIV's Patrick Reed said Wednesday. "I feel like that's what LIV is. They've stepped into a world that was all about tradition only and changed the face of golf for the better. And I feel like with LIV, we're now allowed to touch a lot broader and better way of golf. Golf is boring, slow, long, and we've now brought in the fast and more entertaining part of life."

While LIV certainly has impacted the sport where it matters most for the players, in their bank accounts, other areas have not been as consequential.

LIV's format, which includes 13 four-man teams playing 54 holes with no cut, has not taken off as hoped. While LIV golfers praise the team aspect, which does add a piece of additional drama and "family" atmosphere, the league continues to struggle to attract viewers and has been hurt by the OWGR board denying LIV's application to receive ranking points.

Despite that, money talks, and nobody can dismiss how much more of an impact LIV could have on the sport regardless of whether a deal is reached with the PGA Tour. Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said this week that the two sides will continue to operate separately next year, casting doubt that a deal is anywhere close.

"When people start to see the true value that we're bringing, that intrinsic value is only going to exponentiate over the course of time, which is what I'm excited for," DeChambeau said. "I'm waiting for that kind of domino effect, for it to start falling in that cool direction that we see here on our side at LIV, especially with the team aspect."

 The Maori Meander

A grand tour of both of new zealand's islands..

  • Cross most of New Zealand's mountain passes
  • Overnight on a private farm
  • Enjoy a grand vacation - 3 weeks in the southern hemisphere
  • Glass-bottom boat cruise— included
  • Boat excursion to see the Royal Albatross colony on the Otago Peninsula— included
  • Helicoper flight over Fox Glacier— included
  • Sightseeing cruise on Milford Sound— included

Enjoy the excitement of discovery of a new destination! A tour of New Zealand may be as sedate or as exciting as you wish. The roads are never boring and rarely straight! Want to take a run up the steepest street in the world? Here it is! Ever consider bungee jumping off a 300’ bridge, or bouncing down a raging river in a jetboat? On the Maori Meander, just do it!

Auckland, being New Zealand’s largest city and center of commerce, has its fair share of noise, crowds, and traffic. For us, however, a delightful respite beckons. Our accommodation in Takapuna is the first real taste of New Zealand seashore at its finest. The tidal changes, the vistas across the bay, and the tranquility here will help us get into the swing of all things Kiwi.

Explore The Coromandel Peninsula

After becoming acquainted with the bikes, ride southeast and end the day on the Coromandel Peninsula, the scene of eons of volcanic activity. Violent upheavals and erosion formed the tortured topography, which the roads follow faithfully, thus translating to delightful up, down, over, and around riding!

Motorcycle on New Zealand's North Island

Riding through the ancient lava fields near Mt. Tongariro

Many places on the North Island have an abundance of thermal activity—geysers, bubbling mud pools, and active volcanoes! This is an island visibly evolving. Sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where two of the earth’s tectonic plates meet, the North Island is somewhat “thin” in places. Around Rotorua huge clouds of steam billow from a vast underground volcanic reservoir.

Visit Rotorua, Hawke’s Bay And Mount Tongariro

Quintessentially New Zealand, Rotorua has a large Maori presence, perfectly manicured lawn bowling pitches, and a beautiful lake with its own ancient legend.

A dash to the coast takes us to Napier, a city rebuilt in art-deco style following an earthquake in 1931. An outstanding day must end with outstanding accommodation—ours are private farmstays around Hawke’s Bay.

Napier, New Zealand

A street corner on the promenade, Napier.

Dinner, a walk about the farm, a nightcap and some banter on international trade or New Zealand’s Nuclear Free policy or the joys of traveling this wonderful country are followed by a restful night in an area so quiet that it is almost surreal. Or, skip the nightcap and take only a late night walk about the farm. You will find an inspiring view of the southern hemisphere’s night sky. The air is so clear that you can reach out and almost touch the Southern Cross!

Depart Hawkes’ Bay over the old Taihape road, 120 kilometers of pavement with enough turns and undulations to keep any rider happy. That wonderful ride ends at altitude near the base of Mount Tongariro, one of New Zealand’s most significant volcanoes. The park surrounding Tongariro is a dual World Heritage site.

Our last overnight on the North Island is in Wellington, the country’s Capital City. Much smaller than Auckland, Wellington is an inviting city that seems to have a perfect balance between the urban and rural.

A morning ferry across Cook Strait moves the group to the South Island, where an entirely different New Zealand awaits. Here you can ride for 20 minutes and not pass another vehicle, seeing only the impressive mountains, fjords, forests, rivers, and sparkling lakes.

Nelson And The South Island

A free day in Nelson provides a variety of options to spend the day as you please; riding, relaxing, or exploring. The area is known for excellent fishing, the roads nearby promise great motorcycling, and the local attractions offer a wealth of activity.

Riding on the rural roads of the South Island, New Zealand

Playing around on one of the great gravel options on the South Island

Departing from a rejuvenating stay in Nelson the pulse quickens as we ride the impressive Buller Gorge on the way to Punakaiki. The Tasman sea will greet us with a roar for our first overnight on the wild west coast!

Turning back inland we cross the Lewis Pass, one of three passes across the Alps, to Hanmer Springs. Then, a ride though miles of open plain edged by the Southern Alps means Mackenzie country, the very rural basin in the center of the South Island.

Each day here offers an ever changing scenic tone. After crossing the mighty Clutha river the rugged coastline of the Catlins in Southland contrasts with the stunning mountains so recently experienced.

Larnach Castle, Otago Peninsula, New Zealand

Larnach Castle, Otago Peninsula. Our digs for the evening near Dunedin

Invercargill has turned into the “motorhead’s” mecca in the southern hemisphere. Here, in a marvelous motor museum are countless Brough Superiors, and just around the corner in a little hardware store sits Burt Munro’s Indian.

Cruise Magnificent Milford Sound

Moving away from the man-made, nature takes over again with our ride to Milford Sound. A sunny day at this fjord will keep your camera busy. If it is raining (yes, it does rain on the west coast—over 350 inches a year!) the multitude of waterfalls will capture your imagination.

For the balance of this tour nature continues the show, as the ride follows a route through subtropical rain forests, along windswept headlands, and parallel to sandy beaches, all in the same day! Even more impressive are the glaciers. Two very impressive ones, terminating in tropical rain forest near sea level. The Maori Meander includes an extended helicopter flight over both, for views you will never forget.

Mount Cook, New Zealand

Mount Cook dominates the sky over large parts of the South Island

The last day on the road is a big one, both in distance and altitude. After riding the length of the South Island, it is only fitting that the last riding day bisects this incredible land. Arthur’s pass does that, and once again demonstrates the diversity of New Zealand, as it begins in a wet, wild ecosystem and ends with a ride across grassy plains.

New Zealand seems to have been created especially for the motorcyclist. No place on earth offers such a combination of scenery, great roads, and old fashioned, down home hospitality. Take it all in—enjoy a Maori Meander!

Trevor Crabb and Theo Brunner reign supreme with Manhattan Beach Open crown

Trevor Crabb, left, and Theo Brunner celebrate their AVP Manhattan Beach Open win

A year after his younger brother claimed AVP Manhattan Beach Open glory, it was Trevor Crabb ’s turn to hoist another pier plaque.

Crabb and his partner, Theo Brunner won Sunday’s final 21-18, 21-18 against U.S. Olympic pair Andy Benesh and Miles Partain , never losing in six matches as the first seed. Crabb grabbed his fourth Open winin five years and his first with Brunner as his partner.

Plaschke: Keep your medal! Olympian Jordan Chiles should slam door on misguided IOC

The corrupt IOC is taking a stand against sportsmanship, integrity and the Olympic spirit if it continues to demand Jordan Chiles return her medal.

Aug. 17, 2024

“They just came back from the Olympics, and obviously we didn’t make it,” Crabb said. “[We] wanted a little redemption, and knew that deep down, we’re still the best team out here on any given day.”

The Crabb brothers met in Sunday morning’s Open semifinal — a rematch of the 2023 final . Taylor Crabb and his partner, Taylor Sander , pushed Trevor Crabb and Brunner to three sets for the first time all weekend.

“He ruined the four-peat,” Trevor Crabb said. “Today, I got the revenge.”

Trevor Crabb celebrates after winning the Manhattan Beach Open on Sunday.

For Brunner, named the AVP’s best blocker in 2023, it was his first Manhattan Beach Open victory. He said as a 39-year-old, playing with Crabb gives him his best chance at playing “serious volleyball,” saying his partner gives him the best shot at winning and continuing his career.

When Brunner hoisted the winner’s plaque — to be inscribed with his name at next year’s ceremony — he lifted his daughter Isadora alongside it.

“I feel like she’s never in her life gonna care,” he said about the moment. “In my mind, I’m like, ‘She’s gonna look back and it’s gonna be amazing,’ but I don’t think she cares.”

Isadora, cradled in her father’s arms as he spoke to the media, disagreed.

“My dad was super good and he won the championship,” she said.

Unlike the men’s final, Olympic redemption was on the table later in the afternoon.

Taryn Kloth, right, and teammate Kristen Nuss celebrate their championship win

Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss failed to medal in Paris for the U.S. alongside Open semifinalists Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes — the first time the country exited medal-less in both men’s and women’s beach volleyball.

“Talk about a mix of emotions,” Nuss said. “There hasn’t been time to fully think.”

But when it came to the beach Sunday, performance trumped thought.

Down one set, Kloth — using her 6-foot-4 height to her advantage — overpowered Betsi Flint and Julia Scoles with her blocking ability, leading the pair to win 18-21, 21-17, 15-9 in Sunday afternoon’s final.

“Kristen does not let the ball touch the ground, and you can just tell that she has so much hustle in her and so much fight,” Kloth said, praising her partner’s ability to save points after blocks and deflections. “[It] really inspires me, and it makes me want to work even harder.”

Nuss said that while they’re still processing their Olympic defeat, she hopes that they can “float on cloud nine” for the rest of today and into tomorrow.

Taryn Kloth, right, jumps to block Julia Scoles' hits

She added that the trust she has in Kloth — built from their collegiate years at Louisiana State when the duo went 61-0 — allows them to have “difficult conversations” on the court.

“Having that partnership for so long, I don’t know if other teams have that trust when it comes to those tough conversations,” Nuss said. “This is my sister right here. I’m not saying it’s always sunshine and rainbows. Sisters bicker, but there’s no one else I would want to compete with.”

The winners of the Open secured spots in the inaugural AVP League, which is set to begin when UCLA hosts the competition in September.

But for now, the champions are basking in the glow of their newfound hardware.

“After coming back from Paris with nothing, I think to be able to come back and now walk away with this, it definitely means … it means a little more,” Nuss said.
