  • Switching from iOS

There is no official Safari for Android app, but there are lots of knockoffs in the wild, many of which are scamware. We don't recommend downloading any app that's masquerading as Safari for Android because there are plenty of other well-rated mobile browsers available.

Should You Install Safari on an Android?

The Safari web browser offers tons of features that make surfing the web easier, and it's usually considered superior to other browsers in terms of security, unfortunately, you're not going to find a version of Safari for Android that's sanctioned by Apple. That's because while there are plenty of 'Safari' browsers out there, none of them were created by Apple.

So, the question becomes, should you install one of these Safari files and hope for the best? Probably not, and there are a few reasons for that:

  • Many of the apps that are calling themselves 'Safari for Android' are nothing more than scamware—bits of high-demand software designed to deliver viruses and malware to unsuspecting users.
  • Even 'Safari' apps that are generally considered safe are not from Apple, therefore can have different features and capabilities than the Safari browser you may be used to using on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

It's because of this Lifewire recommends you don't download 'Safari for Android.' At best, you're likely to be disappointed by the browser you download, at worse, it could deliver malware to your device that requires loads of time to repair, or worse, it turns your phone into a useless brick.

There are many YouTube videos available that include links to a 'Safari' download file for iOS. There are even versions of Safari APKs available. None of these files are to be trusted. To be clear, there is no official version of Safari Browser for Android . And you should not download Android apps from sites that are unfamiliar. Google Play is always the safest resource for apps.

Alternatives to Safari for Android

So, since there is no Safari for Android, what are your options? There are plenty of Safari-like browsers available. For example, some of the highest rated options include:

  • Opera Browser : Opera is another super fast browser, but it also includes a free VPN that users find useful for getting around geofenced content. It also has a pop-up blocker, but does lack some importing and searching capabilities of other browsers.
  • DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser : Targeting users who are tired of their every move being tracked online, the DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser offers all the features you would expect from a Safari-like browser: speed, security, and privacy. However, customization seems limited, so if you're looking for something that's highly customizable, this might not be the right browser for you.

Although none of these offers all the features of a Safari browser, each has its own strengths, and if you're ready to move away from Google Chrome, or Microsoft Edge, then they're worth your time to try them out. And since they're all free, you're not going to spend anything but time trying to find a Safari-like browser that suits you.

Safari is a popular web browser developed by Apple for its products such as the iPhone, Mac, and iPad. However, when it comes to Android devices, you may be wondering if it is possible to install the Safari browser on them. Unfortunately, the answer is no.

Apple has never made Safari available for Android, and it is highly unlikely that they will do so in the future. Safari is a proprietary software that is exclusive to Apple devices, and the company has never shown any indication of releasing it for Android.

If you are looking for a web browser for your Android device, there are plenty of alternatives to Safari that are available on the Google Play Store. Popular options include Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Microsoft Edge.

These browsers offer similar features and functionality to Safari, such as tabbed browsing, bookmarks, and the ability to save passwords and autofill forms. They are also regularly updated with security patches and performance improvements to ensure a smooth browsing experience.

In addition to these popular browsers, there are also several niche options available on the Google Play Store. These may include browsers that are specifically designed for privacy, speed, or accessibility. While they may not be as well-known as the top browsers, they can still offer a unique and useful experience for users.

What is Safari Browser?

Safari is a web browser developed by Apple Inc. that is primarily used on Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers. It was first introduced in 2003 and has since become one of the most popular browsers among Apple users.

Known for its sleek design and user-friendly interface, Safari offers a seamless browsing experience with advanced features and robust security measures. It is built on the WebKit engine, which allows for fast page rendering and efficient usage of system resources.

With Safari, users can access a wide range of websites, search the internet, and enjoy various browsing functionalities. It supports features like tabbed browsing, bookmark management, private browsing mode, and customizable settings for a personalized experience.

One of the notable features of Safari is its integration with other Apple devices and services. For example, users can use “Handoff” to seamlessly transition their browsing sessions from one Apple device to another. They can also use Safari to sync bookmarks, history, and other settings across their Apple devices.

Additionally, Safari is known for its strong emphasis on user privacy and security. It includes features like Intelligent Tracking Prevention, which aims to protect users from cross-site tracking and unauthorized data collection. It also offers built-in measures to block malicious websites, warn against potential phishing attempts, and secure user information.

Over the years, Safari has evolved to support advanced web technologies and standards. It offers excellent HTML5 and CSS3 support, enabling users to access and interact with modern web applications and media-rich content.

While Safari has primarily been designed for Apple devices, there has been speculation and demand for a Safari version that can be used on Android devices as well. However, Apple has not developed a official version of Safari for the Android platform, which leads to the question: Can you install the Safari browser on Android?

Different Browser Options for Android

Android users have a wide range of browser options to choose from based on their personal preferences and requirements. While Safari is not officially available for Android, there are several alternative browsers that offer similar functionalities and features. Here are some popular browser options for Android:

  • Google Chrome: As the default browser on most Android devices, Google Chrome is widely used and trusted by millions of users. It offers a clean and intuitive interface, seamless sync with Google services, extensive plugin support, and advanced privacy and security features.
  • Mozilla Firefox: Known for its commitment to user privacy, Mozilla Firefox offers a fast and customizable browsing experience. It comes with features like enhanced tracking protection, private browsing mode, and support for add-ons. Firefox also supports a wide range of web standards and offers excellent performance on Android devices.
  • Opera: Opera is a feature-rich browser that focuses on speed, data savings, and a user-friendly interface. It comes with integrated ad-blocking, built-in VPN functionality, and a unique “Flow” feature for seamless integration with other devices. Opera also offers a battery-saving mode and video pop-out feature for an enhanced browsing experience.
  • Brave Browser: Brave Browser is known for its privacy-centric approach and built-in ad-blocking capabilities. It prioritizes user privacy by blocking trackers and ads, resulting in faster page loads and reduced data usage. Brave also rewards users for opting into privacy-respecting ads with its Basic Attention Token (BAT) system.
  • Microsoft Edge: Formerly known as “Microsoft Internet Explorer” and later “Microsoft Edge,” this browser is now available for Android devices. It offers a clean and modern interface, seamless integration with Windows devices, support for extensions, and features like reading mode and tracking prevention.

These are just a few examples of the many browser options available for Android users. Each browser has its own unique set of features, performance characteristics, and user interfaces. It’s essential to explore and experiment with different browsers to find the one that best suits your needs and preferences.

Is Safari Browser Available for Android?

No, Safari browser is not officially available for Android devices. Apple has chosen to keep Safari exclusive to their own ecosystem, meaning it is only accessible on Apple devices like iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers.

While Apple has developed versions of some of its popular applications for Android, such as Apple Music and Apple TV, Safari remains an exception. Apple’s decision to keep Safari exclusive to its own devices is likely due to the company’s desire to tightly integrate its hardware and software for a seamless user experience.

Despite the absence of Safari on Android, there are alternative browsing options available that can provide a similar experience. As mentioned earlier, popular browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Brave Browser, and Microsoft Edge offer robust features and performance on Android devices.

It’s worth noting that some third-party developers have attempted to create unofficial versions of Safari for Android. However, it’s important to approach such offerings with caution, as they may not be authorized by Apple and could potentially pose security risks. It is generally recommended to stick with official and trusted browsers available on the Google Play Store to ensure a safe and reliable browsing experience.

While Safari may not be available for Android, it’s worth considering the specific features and functionalities that attract users to Safari. If there are particular aspects of Safari that you find appealing, such as its integration with other Apple devices or its privacy features, you can explore alternative browsers that offer similar capabilities. Additionally, some browser developers strive to mimic the look and feel of Safari, allowing Android users to experience a Safari-like interface on their devices.

Overall, while Safari is not available for Android, there are numerous alternative browsers that offer a wide range of features and compatibility with Android devices. Android users have the flexibility to choose a browser that suits their preferences and browsing needs, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable web experience.

Firefox Sync allows users to sync their bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history across devices. With its emphasis on privacy and security, Firefox is an excellent choice for those concerned about their online privacy.
  • Opera: Opera is an innovative browser that offers unique features such as a built-in ad blocker, free VPN, and data-saving mode. Its intuitive user interface and effortless tab management make it an attractive option for Android users. Opera also provides quick access to popular websites through its customizable “Speed Dial” feature.
  • Brave Browser: Brave is an open-source browser focused on privacy and speed. It blocks third-party ads and trackers by default, resulting in faster page loads and reduced data consumption. Brave also offers a feature called Brave Rewards, which allows users to earn cryptocurrency tokens by opting into privacy-respecting ads.
  • Microsoft Edge: Microsoft Edge, previously known as Microsoft Internet Explorer, is now available for Android devices. The browser offers a seamless integration with Windows devices and supports syncing, allowing users to easily switch between their mobile and desktop browsing experiences. It also offers a reading mode and built-in tracking prevention features.

These are just a few examples of the numerous alternative browsers available for Android users. Each browser has its own set of features, performance capabilities, and user interfaces. It’s recommended to explore and experiment with different browsers to find the one that suits your specific needs and preferences.

Remember, while Safari may not be an option for Android, there are plenty of alternative browsers that offer a range of features and customization options. Whether you value privacy, speed, or integration with other services, you can find a browser that meets your requirements for an enjoyable browsing experience on your Android device.

Benefits of Using Safari Browser on Android

While Safari may not be officially available for Android devices, there are certain benefits that users may consider if they are interested in using Safari-like features on their Android devices:

  • Seamless Integration with Apple Ecosystem: One of the significant advantages of using Safari on an Apple device is its seamless integration with other Apple products. If you own multiple Apple devices, such as an iPhone, iPad, and Mac computer, using Safari ensures a consistent browsing experience across all devices. Bookmarks, browsing history, and open tabs can be easily synced, allowing for a smooth transition between devices.
  • User-Friendly Interface: Safari is known for its simple, clean, and intuitive user interface. The browser is designed to prioritize the content, offering a clutter-free browsing experience. With its minimalist design and easy-to-use navigation, Safari provides a seamless and enjoyable user experience.
  • Advanced Security and Privacy Features: Safari has a strong focus on user privacy and security. It incorporates features like Intelligent Tracking Prevention, which aims to prevent cross-site tracking and safeguard user data. Safari also provides robust protection against malicious websites, alerts against potential phishing attempts, and includes features like private browsing mode for enhanced privacy.
  • Optimized Performance: Given that Safari is developed specifically for Apple devices, it is optimized to provide excellent performance and efficiency. The browser’s utilization of the WebKit engine ensures fast page rendering and efficient usage of system resources, resulting in a smooth and responsive browsing experience.
  • Excellent Support for Web Standards: Safari is known for its excellent support for web standards, including HTML5 and CSS3. This ensures that users can access and interact with modern web applications, media-rich content, and interactive websites without compatibility issues.

While these benefits are specific to Safari on Apple devices, there are alternative browsers available for Android that offer similar features and functionalities. Browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera provide seamless syncing, user-friendly interfaces, advanced security features, and optimized performance for Android users.

Ultimately, while Safari may have its unique advantages within the Apple ecosystem, Android users can still enjoy a fantastic browsing experience by exploring the plethora of alternative browsers available for their devices.

How to Install Safari Browser on Android

Since Safari is not officially available for Android devices, you cannot directly install it from the Google Play Store. However, there are a few alternative methods you can explore if you wish to experience Safari-like features on your Android device:

  • Third-Party Browsers: While Safari itself may not be available, several browser apps aim to replicate the look and feel of Safari. These browsers typically offer a similar user interface and some Safari-like features, allowing you to enjoy a Safari-like browsing experience on your Android device. You can search for these browsers on the Google Play Store and choose the one that suits your preferences.
  • Emulators: Another approach is to use an emulator that allows you to run iOS apps on your Android device. Emulators simulate the iOS environment, enabling you to run Safari and other iOS apps. However, it’s important to note that using emulators can be complex and may not provide a seamless experience, as some apps may not function properly or encounter compatibility issues.
  • Jailbreaking or Rooting: Jailbreaking an iPhone or iPad allows users to remove software restrictions imposed by Apple and install unofficial apps, including Safari, on their devices. Similarly, Android devices can be rooted to gain administrative control and install custom firmware. However, it is essential to understand that both jailbreaking and rooting can void warranties, compromise device security, and have legal implications. Therefore, these methods should only be pursued if you have a thorough understanding of the risks involved.

It’s crucial to exercise caution when exploring alternative methods to install Safari or Safari-like browsers on your Android device. Unofficial methods may come with potential security risks or compatibility issues. To ensure a safe and smooth browsing experience, it is generally recommended to rely on official and trusted browsers available on the Google Play Store.

While Safari may not be available on Android, you can still enjoy a wide range of excellent browser options specifically designed for the Android platform. These alternative browsers, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Brave Browser, and Microsoft Edge, offer robust features, enhanced performance, and compatibility with Android devices, providing an enjoyable and secure browsing experience.

Steps to Use Safari-like Features on Android

Although you cannot directly install Safari on an Android device, you can still incorporate Safari-like features and elements into your browsing experience on Android. Here are some steps you can follow to achieve a Safari-like experience:

  • Use a Safari-like Browser: Look for alternative browsers available on the Google Play Store that mimic the design and functionality of Safari. These browsers often offer a similar user interface and Safari-like features, such as a clean and minimalistic design, tabbed browsing, and bookmarks management. Install the browser of your choice and set it as your default browser.
  • Customize the Interface: Once you have installed a Safari-like browser, explore its settings and customization options. Look for options to adjust the browser’s theme, font size, and other visual elements to resemble the Safari interface. You may also find options to reorder or hide certain browser elements to match Safari’s layout.
  • Enable Reader Mode: Some browsers offer a reader mode that simplifies the layout of web pages, similar to Safari’s “Reader View.” This mode removes clutter, ads, and sidebars, presenting a clean and distraction-free reading experience. Look for this option in the browser’s settings and enable it for a Safari-like reading experience.
  • Sync Bookmarks and Tabs: If you use Safari on other Apple devices, such as an iPhone or iPad, you can sync your bookmarks and open tabs with the Safari-like browser on your Android device. Most major browsers support synchronization across different devices, allowing you to access your saved bookmarks and continue browsing seamlessly between devices.
  • Manage Privacy and Security: Just like Safari, prioritize your privacy and security on Android by exploring the browser’s settings. Look for options to block ads, enable private browsing mode, manage website permissions, and enable protections against tracking and malicious websites. Ensure that your chosen browser has robust privacy and security features to enhance your browsing experience.
  • Install Safari Extensions: Some browsers on Android offer support for extensions similar to those available for Safari. Check if your chosen Safari-like browser supports extensions and explore the available options. Install extensions that enhance your browsing experience, such as ad-blockers, password managers, or productivity tools.

By following these steps, you can tailor your browsing experience on Android to closely resemble Safari. These adjustments will allow you to enjoy Safari-like features, layout, and extensions within the capabilities of Android and the Safari-like browser you have chosen.

Remember that while these steps can help you achieve a Safari-like experience, the overall functionality and integration with Apple’s ecosystem may differ. However, with the right browser and settings adjustments, you can tailor your Android browsing experience to align with the look and feel of Safari.

Safari Browser Alternatives for Android

While Safari may not be available for Android devices, there are several alternative browsers that offer similar features and functionalities. These browsers provide a wide range of options for Android users to enjoy a seamless and personalized browsing experience. Here are some notable Safari browser alternatives for Android:

  • Google Chrome: As the default browser on most Android devices, Google Chrome is a popular choice. It offers a user-friendly interface, fast page loading, tabbed browsing, and extensive customization options. Chrome also integrates seamlessly with Google services and provides synchronization across devices.
  • Mozilla Firefox: Known for its commitment to user privacy, Firefox offers features like Enhanced Tracking Protection, which blocks third-party tracking cookies. It also supports add-ons and boasts a customizable interface. Firefox Sync allows users to sync their bookmarks, history, and passwords across multiple devices seamlessly.
  • Opera: Opera is a feature-rich browser that emphasizes speed and data savings. It offers a built-in ad blocker, free VPN, and an intuitive user interface. Opera also features features like a personalized news feed, customizable settings, and a battery-saving mode for a smooth browsing experience.

It provides a clean and modern interface, seamless syncing with Windows devices, and integration with Microsoft services. Edge also offers features like a built-in password manager, reading mode, and tracking prevention.

Each of these alternative browsers brings its own set of features, performance, and user interface options. Android users can choose the browser that aligns best with their preferences and requirements. Ultimately, the choice will depend on factors like preferred privacy features, syncing capabilities, browsing speed, and user interface design.

It’s important to note that these are just a few examples of the many browsers available for Android. Other browsers, such as Dolphin Browser, UC Browser, and Puffin Browser, also offer unique features and can be worth exploring based on individual preferences.

While Safari may not be an option for Android, these alternative browsers provide a variety of robust features and a seamless browsing experience on Android devices.

New Chrome warning issued for 1.4 billion million Apple iPhone users

We all know relationships can be complicated, but few are quite as complicated as the one between Apple and Google. Cue Apple’s creepy new attack ad on Google—with a clear message for its 1.4 billion users—stop using Chrome on your iPhone.

So, why now? Google is on a mission to convert Safari users to Chrome. It currently relies on Safari to drive most search requests from iPhones—enabled by a financial arrangement between itself and Apple, whereby Google search is the default on Safari. But that arrangement could soon be curtailed by monopoly investigations in the US and Europe. And so Google is advancing Plan B.

Apple billboard in NYC

Chrome only has a 30% install base across iPhone users—Google’s target is to increase this to 50%, bringing another 300 million iPhone users inside its data tent . Apple obviously wants to stop this happening. Those 300 million pairs of eyeballs generate serious online revenue, and as search changes through the introduction of on-device AI, it will become a retention versus conversion battleground.

That’s why you may have seen Apple’s Safari privacy billboards popping up in the city where you live. What started as a local campaign in San Francisco has now gone global. And while the ads don’t mention Chrome, they don’t need to. Nothing else matters. Between them, Safari and Chrome enjoy a greater than 90% market share on mobile devices. And on iPhone, it’s a straight shootout between the two of them.

‘the acolyte’ episode 8 recap and review: a dreadful season finale and the cameos can’t save it, amazon prime day 2024: the 110 best deals of day two so far.

Privacy is Chrome’s Achille’s heel. Tracking cookies remain , with plans to phase them out already delayed as Google navigates an ongoing regulatory minefield. Chrome’s quasi-privacy mode is much less private than users assumed. And in recent days we have seen warnings that Google captures device data from Chrome users with a hidden setting that cannot be disabled.

Apple has just raised the stakes in this privacy battle with a new video ad that applies Hitchcock’s “The Birds” to smartphone privacy. It’s powerful and memorable and its message is clear. If you don’t want to be watched online, use Safari. Which means—very, very simply, if you don’t want to be watched online, don’t use Google Chrome. I have approached Google for any comments on the new ad.

Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’

When The Birds was released in the 1960s, it was shocking and frightening and thought provoking. Its message was there’s a threat we don’t really see, but which is everywhere. As one character says in the movie: “Who are you? What are you? Where did you come from? I think you're the cause of all of this. I think you're evil.”

While there are suggestions in the video that this might be targeting Android users to bring them across to iPhone, that’s not the point. No users are going to ditch Android just to access a different browser, however punchy the ad. This is about keeping iPhone users within Apple’s walled garden. But even so, it might not be that simple.

The stark reality for Apple is that its users prefer Google Search. And Apple itself has reportedly found this to be better than alternatives. Echoes here of Apple dropping Google Maps some years ago and then having to u-turn. We can assume that even if Google is dropped as the default search on Safari, users will be able to set it manually.

The question then becomes does Google offer advanced AI search features on Chrome that are not available elsewhere. We know such moves have been considered if dismissed for now. But this browser battlefield is only just beginning. And while those 300 million Safari users remain Apple’s for now, watch this space…

Safari Just Became the Best Browser on Mac if You Hate Ads

Kyle Barr

Like its namesake, Apple’s beta version of Safari 18 can now take a machete to the canopy of ads cluttering your favorite webpage (like this one). Safari lets you read the entire page without seeing any popups, banner ads, video ads, or anything in between, and with Sequoia its getting better. If you’re a Mac user on the latest Mac or iPad beta and don’t want to deal with ad blockers, you should at least give it a spin.

The macOS Sequoia and iPad OS 18 betas are live as of Monday, and if you haven’t yet downloaded it to try it out (remember to back up your computer or else not use your main computer), you’ll find a button in the URL bar for any page you’re on. Safari detects any site in article format and gets the option for the “Reader” format. And, hey, that includes Gizmodo.com. All you have to do is click on the square icon in the URL bar, then select the “Show Reader” button once it appears. It’s now getting new features that make it even better.

If you want to watch a video but continue browsing other tabs, click the two right-facing arrows and select “Picture in Picture” mode. This will create a floating video window that you can pause or play. Supposedly, another “Highlights” feature could list relevant page information, such as directions. However, in our tests, that feature did not appear once, even when visiting the site displayed in the macOS Sequoia preview page .

The article then transforms into a simplified format that should maintain images, text, and any in-line embedded links or videos. Gone are any ads or automated video players. If you click on the same button in the URL bar, you can also change the color of the page, the font, and the zoom level. Reader also maintains all the article’s original links, though you’ll need to re-enable Reader on any external page you visit.

It’s fast and—mostly—seamless, and we found a few reasons to read an article the regular way if you’re browsing on Safari. It should work on sites with or without paywalls, though Safari has more difficulty with some sites’ formatting. For instance, Safari failed to load the main images or videos from Bloomberg’s media player.

The feature is much like Firefox’s own Reader mode, but our tests found that Safari’s version maintains both the featured and in-line images far better than Firefox. In Firefox, you’ll occasionally see the automated video players load without any video running in them, but not on Safari. It does the job, though both have some issues. Safari and Firefox have issues displaying text that’s not in your regular paragraph format, such as in boxes or pull quotes. Firefox has one advantage: it can read the text aloud in its best ultra-digitized Microsoft Sam impression.

Safari’s Reader is good enough, though Apple plans to AI-ify Safari with AI-generated summaries of articles in Reader mode. Bing, Chrome, and the smaller Arc Browser already include similar features, though Apple plans to use its “Apple Intelligence” to create a table of contents for the page. Those AI features likely won’t be available until later this year.

Reader can also be a blunt-force way to get around some portion of various sites’ paywalls. We used Reader on multiple pages from The New York Times, which could display a large portion of the text before the page cuts it off. This is less effective on sites like Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, or The Washington Post, which display less text beneath the pay banners before the paywall cuts it off. News site The Information has one of the most notorious paywalls among most news sites, and it seems Safari doesn’t even inspect the page as an article.

There are many other ways of getting around paywalls. Sites like the Internet Archive or 12ft.io can leap over the paywalls on some news sites, but not all. Folks have long been bypassing paywalls with scripts or external sites, so Safari isn’t the best way to access blocked content. Safari 18’s redesign includes a few other highlights that are accessible by the same button. If you’re on a site with a video, such as YouTube, you can hit the button in the URL to bring up the Video Viewer.

Image of oneplus phone in green

The best phones you can buy today, including the  iPhone 15 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra , cost a fortune. Even more affordable phones, like the Pixel 8A , still cost a pretty penny. The best way to squeeze the most value out of your purchase is simply to keep using it for longer. It's not just better for your wallet, it's better for the environment too; keeping your tech going for longer before upgrading means fewer phones being shipped and fewer old phones ending up in landfill . The good news is that companies like Apple, Google, Samsung and others are supporting their phones for longer, meaning the software will remain safe to use for years to come.

The rest of it, then, is up to you. To keep your phone in good working condition for the seven or eight years of software support it'll receive takes some effort, plenty of care and a few key strategies.

Here then are the top things you can do to help your phone last as long as possible.

Install all available updates

Using a phone that no longer receives security updates simply isn't safe and should be avoided. Previously it was common for many Android manufacturers to support new phones for only two to three years, but now you'll find phones like the Google Pixel 8 series coming with seven years of software support. Sadly, some more affordable phones like the new OnePlus Nord CE4 Lite still only receive a few years of updates -- if you're buying a new phone, make sure you check how long it'll be supported for as this will give you more value for money throughout the phone's lifespan.

safe-android-phone-6

Updating your phone to the latest security update will help keep hackers out and keep your phone free of malicious software that could creep in and slow down your phone. Most phones will automatically prompt you to install the latest updates (and you should), but if you're on an older phone, head into your settings menu and scroll down to Software Update and click to see if an update is available.

The same is true for your apps, which will also need to be updated to remain compatible with the version of iOS or Android you're using. It's good practice to allow apps to be automatically updated in the background, but if not, make sure you go into your app store of choice and check that you're running the latest versions.

A pile of iPhone 12 cases of various styles rests on a wooden surface.

If you've just bought a shiny new iPhone the best thing you can do to physically protect it is to put it in a case immediately. It'll not only keep it safe should you accidentally drop it, but it will also help keep it from picking up micro scratches from the keys or coins in your pocket.

A screen protector is a great idea too, as once your phone's actual screen becomes damaged, there's little you can do to help it. If you get a nasty scratch on a screen protector though, you can simply replace it, keeping the underlying phone looking fresh as a daisy for years to come.

Replace a tired battery, not the phone

Your phone's battery will gradually wear down over time, offering less battery life per charge than it did when it was new. This is true of all phones. Some older phones may have batteries that only offer 50 percent of what they once did. And you may even receive warnings from your phone that your battery can't offer the necessary power and so your processor may be throttled to compensate.

But worry not, as it's pretty easy to replace the battery yourself on most phones to give it a whole new lease on life. iFixit sells a variety of kits and third-party replacement batteries to suit a huge range of phones, so if your battery is on the way out, it's worth seeing if you can swap it out yourself .

iphone-battery-replace-3

The iPhone 6, old battery removed and all traces of the glue cleaned off.

There are of course a variety of places you can take your phone (not all of them are especially legit) to have your battery replaced -- or even other components like a broken screen -- and this could be a good option to consider if you're not especially confident about your skills with a screwdriver.

Offload old apps and photos you don't need

If you've had your phone for years then odds are it's pretty clogged up with thousands of photos of your friends, your pets or the plates of food you've eaten over the time you've had it. It's also likely you've got a variety of old apps and games you downloaded on a whim, played with for a few bus rides and then moved on to the next mobile gaming sensation.

A lack of storage can have a detrimental effect on your phone's performance overall and can also mean there's not enough room available for crucial software updates to be installed. It's worth going through your archives, backing up the photos and videos you want to save to the cloud, and getting rid of anything on your phone that's needlessly taking up space.

If you've had your phone for a long time and it's really running slowly, it may even be worth backing up all your important data and doing a full factory reset, starting fresh and only installing the essentials you need.

phone-wont-charge-4

The satisfying removal of dirt from your phone's charging port.

Clean out your ports

Finally, give your phone a good cleaning as it can have surprisingly helpful outcomes. Pocket fluff can be a real problem for your phone, with the charging port in particular often getting clogged up with bits of nonsense. The result is that when you plug in your charger, it can't quite connect and as a result, your phone won't charge.

It's easy to think that something has actually broken -- the charging port itself, or the cable -- but really it could be as simple as the port just being stuffed full of lint. Get a wooden toothpick in there periodically and try and ease out any dirt and debris you find to ensure your charger can fit without having to be aggressively wiggled.

It's also worth using an old toothbrush (clean and dry) to gently brush away any debris you might find around the speakers and microphones to ensure you can clearly hear -- and be heard -- on your phone calls.

Installing and uninstalling web apps

This guide covers how users can install and uninstall PWAs on their devices. If you want to learn about making a web app installable as a PWA, see Making PWAs installable instead.

History of web app installation

Browsers have always enabled saving shortcuts to websites, known as "bookmarking." These are just links to websites.

Some operating systems (OS) have enhanced bookmarking capabilities, enabling saving bookmarks to common places, such as the home screen or taskbar, with an icon launching the site in the OS's default browser. For many websites, this is also just a link to the site. If the site is a Progressive Web Applications (PWA) , saving to home screen installs the PWA on the user's device, fully integrating it into the operating systems like native applications on most devices. Just like PWAs can be installed, they can also be uninstalled.

We'll first cover the precursors — saving links to websites.

Bookmarking websites

All browsers have add-to-favorites bookmark functionality. A bookmark, or favorite, is a clickable shortcut for a web page. Bookmarks enable quick access to websites without the user having to enter a URL or otherwise search for content. Bookmarking is especially useful for long URLs and accessing frequently visited content that is not the site's homepage.

All browsers enable users to view and manage their bookmarks, including renaming and deleting favorites. By default, the bookmark's display includes the text content of the bookmarked page's <title> element along with an icon consisting of the site's favicon .

Browsers enable saving, editing, moving, deleting, and otherwise managing bookmarks. The UI for bookmark management differs by browser.

Add to home screen

Smartphones, starting with the iPhone in 2007, added "save to home screen" functionality. For regular (non-PWA) websites, this feature is similar to bookmarks, but instead of adding the favicon and title of the page to the bookmarks menu — a browser feature — favoriting in this manner adds an icon to the OS's home screen.

Adding a non-PWA site to the home screen does not install the website on the device. Rather, it adds the developer-defined icon to the home screen, that, when clicked, opens the bookmarked link in the default browser.

iPhone add to home screen, install prompt, icon, and delete functionality.

If the site added to the home screen is a PWA, the PWA will be installed on the device.

Deleting the icon from the home screen removes the bookmark. The deletion confirmation provides information as to whether deleting the icon deletes a bookmark or entire application.

Installing and uninstalling PWAs

While installing a PWA only takes a couple of clicks, depending on the web application features, the result of installing a PWA usually goes well beyond creating a link to a page on the Internet; installing a PWA more deeply integrates the web application on the user's device.

Depending on the PWA, device, and features of the operating system and browser, installing a PWA may enable native-like features, such as giving the app its own standalone window or registering it as a file handler. This also means uninstalling a PWA, which also only requires a couple of clicks, does more than just removing the PWA's icon.

Installing PWAs

The UI for installing a PWA from the web varies from one browser to another, and from one platform to another.

The user interface for installing PWAs differs by device and OS combination. The "Add to homes screen" user interface installs the PWA on Safari on iOS. Other browsers, including Chrome for Android, include the app installation command in the browser setting menu. In Chrome and Edge on desktop, when the user navigates to the page, if the page is a PWA and the PWA is not currently installed by the browser, an installation icon will be visible in the URL bar:

PWA install prompt in URL bar

When the user selects the icon, the browser displays a prompt asking if they want to install the PWA, and if they accept, the PWA is installed.

PWA installation confirmation prompt

Once installed, the PWA will behave like other applications that are installed on the OS. For example, on macOS, the icon will appear in the dock, and will have the same icon options as other applications:

PWA icon in the doc on MacOS

On most desktop browsers, the install prompt is in the URL bar. On mobile, the install prompt is generally found in the menu of browser options. No matter the browser or OS, the installation needs to be confirmed.

PWA installation on Chrome for Android, with confirmation, home screen icon, and offline experience.

Once installed, the PWA behaves just like other installed applications: clicking on the application icon opens the PWA, even when the user is offline.

Installation is supported on all modern desktop and mobile devices. Whether the PWA can be installed by the browser on the operating system differs by browser/operating system combination. Most browsers support installing PWAs on all operating systems—ChromeOS, MacOS, Windows, Android, Linux, etc.—directly or when an extension is installed.

Firefox requires a PWA extension .

Before macOS 14 (Sonoma), PWAs could be installed on macOS from any browser except Safari. The opposite is true for iOS versions before 16.4, where PWAs could only be installed in Safari. PWAs can be installed on macOS 14.0 or later and iOS/iPadOS 16.4 or later from any supporting browser.

When an installed PWA is launched, it can be displayed in its own standalone window (without the full browser UI) but it still effectively runs in a browser window, even if the usual browser UI elements, such as the address bar or back button, aren't visible. The application will be found where the OS saves other applications, within a folder specific to the browser.

PWAs installed by a browser remain specific to this browser. This means that the browser that was used to install a PWA is the one used to run that PWA. It also means that you can install the same PWA from a different browser and that the two apps will behave as two different instances and will not share any data.

The browser used to install the PWA will know the PWA is installed, but other browsers will not have access to the installed status. For example, if you install a PWA using MS Edge, Edge will prompt you to open the PWA when you visit the site while Chrome will continue to prompt you to install the application. If you install the PWA using Chrome as well, you will have two copies of the PWA. When multiple instances of a PWA are open, data is not shared between instances installed from different browsers.

When you tap the web app's icon, it opens up in the browser environment that installed the PWA, generally without the browser's UI around it, though that depends on the way the developer configured the web app manifest . Similarly, the method used to uninstall the PWA depends on the browser that was used to install it.

Uninstalling

On most mobile operating systems, uninstalling a PWA is accomplished in the same way as uninstalling other applications. On some mobile operating systems, PWAs appear in the same control panel where applications downloaded from app stores are managed and can be uninstalled there.

On iOS, PWAs installed from Safari are listed and searchable from the "App Library" screen, but are not listed along with other installed applications under "Settings". On iOS, long tapping an icon surfaces the delete bookmark UI; removing the icon from the home screen deletes the PWA.

In some desktop operating systems, uninstalling a PWA can be done directly in opened PWA. To uninstall, open the PWA. In the top right corner of the opened app, there will be an icon that must be expanded to see more tools. Depending on the browser used to install the PWA, there will either be a link to uninstall the PWA, or a settings link that opens the browser's settings page with an uninstall link. Either click on the uninstall option in the drop-down menu, if there, or navigate to the app settings in a browser tab and click uninstall.

App settings in MS Edge with an uninstall link

Selecting app setting from the opened drop-down menu in Edge, opened the MS Edge browser edge://apps tab. There we are provided a list of installed applications with options for each, including 🗑️ Uninstall . Confirm the uninstall. That's it!

In Edge, the installed PWAs are listed and can be managed by visiting edge://apps in your Edge browser. In Chrome, the list of Google Apps and installed PWAs are viewable and managed by visiting chrome://apps in your Chrome browser.

How to Install Apps From Outside Your Phone's App Store

a group of guys on their phones

If you've been watching the news cycle around app bans and the policies around what is and isn't allowed in the app stores run by Apple and Google, you might have also seen references to "sideloading" apps—which essentially means installing apps that aren't available in the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

This is actually relatively easy to do, at least on Android. It can give you access to apps you wouldn't otherwise be able to run (usually because they violate one or more app store policies), and it can also enable you to try out early versions of apps before they're released to the masses.

Before you rush to start downloading and installing things, it's important you know that sideloading apps removes the security protections that Google and Apple give you: Their app stores are carefully patrolled for malware, stalkerware , and anything that might try to steal your data or break your device.

By installing unauthorized apps from alternative sources, you're sidestepping these safeguards. Be very, very careful about which apps you choose to sideload—check and double-check the background of these apps and the backgrounds of the developers that make them. In general, you should install apps outside of your phone's app store only if you have a very good reason to. And if you just read that thinking "Oh, I'll be fine, I don't need to do that extra research," you probably won't, and you really really shouldn't install it.

Sideloading apps on Android isn't particularly difficult, as long as you're cautious about what you install and take into account the security considerations we've mentioned above. That said, it can be a useful way of expanding what your phone is capable of. It also lets you play around with apps outside of the Google Play Store.

To get started, point your mobile browser toward a trusted site that stores APKs (Android Packages). APKMirror is one of the best and most reliable, for example. When you've found the APK that you want to install on your phone, tap the Download APK button and then OK to confirm you understand what Android tells you—that unauthorized apps can harm your device. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, make sure you know what you're doing.

Image may contain File Text and Webpage

If you need an Android app, APKMirror can help.

The 209 Best Prime Day Deals, Tested and Tracked By Our Team

Tap Open , and if this is the first APK you've installed, you'll be asked to go to Settings to confirm that you want to install "unknown apps" from this source. (In this case, the source is your Android web browser.) You'll have to do this only once for your web browser, and you can then tap Install to run the APK and install the app.

If you need to access the install-unknown-apps setting again, you can find it by going to Settings then selecting Apps and notifications , the app in question (usually your web browser), Advanced , and Install unknown apps . You can install apps from file-syncing services such as Dropbox, as long as you enable this feature for the relevant app.

That's really all there is to it—the process might vary slightly if you're using something other than the stock version of Android 10, which is the latest version at the time of writing. In Android 11 , the process is changing slightly, so the downloaded app will have to restart once you've given it permission to run.

The biggest challenge with sideloading apps on Android is not how to do it, but making sure everything you install is safe: Android apps are given more rein on your device than they are on iOS, so the potential for an untrustworthy app to do damage or steal data is significantly higher—as long as you stick to known portals like APKMirror and known apps that are well established and widely used, you can minimize your risk.

Image may contain Text Paper and Business Card

You'll need to confirm that you want to install apps from outside the Play Store.

For the more adventurous, rooting your Android phone is an option: This basically means hacking your Android phone to take off all its limits and restrictions, but it's not for the faint of heart. While it lets you give apps more control over your system— Titanium Backup , an excellent whole-device backup tool, is a good example—it's difficult to do, it's likely to break some of your favorite apps, and it leaves your phone more vulnerable from a security perspective. Unless you have a very good reason, we'd recommend using the APK method rather than rooting to install non–Play Store apps. Besides, the procedure to root you phone varies among devices and even among carriers sometimes, depending on whether your phone is locked. It used to be a popular pastime, but it's much less common now and in many cases more difficult, and that's by design.

Lastly, web apps are sometimes an option if you need to get at apps that aren't in the official Google store. Even if apps are officially available through the normal route, you can always use this trick to access apps—Twitter, Facebook, and so on—that you don't necessarily want on your phone. If you're struggling to find something in the Google Play Store, see if there's an online version you can get at through your Android web browser.

Apple's iOS and iPadOS are much more tightly locked down than Android—Apple simply doesn't make it possible to sideload apps on its mobile operating systems in the same way that you can with Android. There's no safety security switch that you can override, but you still have several options for getting unauthorized apps on your iPhone.

The first is to jailbreak your phone : Here you're essentially smashing the lock that Apple puts on iOS and unlocking your phone yourself, using software distributed on the web (the equivalent of rooting on Android). Once you've applied the jailbreak, you can install just about any app you like—apps to change the look of the interface, access the file system more easily, have apps overlaid on top of each other, and much more.

Image may contain Text Electronics and Outdoors

Jailbreaking will help you get outside the Apple App Store.

Jailbreaking gives you a lot more freedom in terms of what you can do with your iPhone. The disadvantages are that it's difficult to do, it voids your warranty, it leaves you open to all kinds of new security threats, and it stops you from updating your iPhone as normal. (You'll need to wait for the next iOS version to be hacked before upgrading, which can leave you without security updates, new app features, and in some cases new versions of your favorite apps.) What's more, Apple is constantly and aggressively trying to stop the practice. As with rooting on Android, it used to be more popular, but in recent versions the balance between the effort required and benefit gained has tipped toward effort, so for most people it's just not worth it.

Information is widely available on the web about how to jailbreak your iPhone (although unlike Android, the model of iPhone you have doesn't matter as much), and the free apps you need to do it—typically you'll need to connect your device to macOS or Windows and run the jailbreaking tool from there. Make sure you fully understand the privacy and security implications, and be aware that jailbreaking information can very quickly become out of date. In general, it's not something we recommend.

Another way to install apps that haven't been released in the Apple App Store is to use a program called TestFlight . This is much more reliable than jailbreaking, and it's officially sanctioned by Apple, though it's unlikely that you'll ever come across it unless you're specifically looking for it—TestFlight is a tool for developers to test beta versions of their apps before they're formally launched.

Anyone can download and install TestFlight for free. That's the easy part, but you can't then go and install every prerelease app package you like: You need to be specifically invited to join a beta test, usually via a link sent to you in an email or posted to the web. Open that link in TestFlight and you'll get access to the software code and any beta app updates that arrive thereafter.

Image may contain Text

TestFlight is the official beta testing app for iOS.

Beta releases give you early access to apps and features before everyone else gets them, but expect to encounter some bugs and issues along the way. If you want to get involved, you can find details of open betas at WABetaInfo , as well as on Reddit and various other places online. You can also sign up to access early versions of various Google apps on TestFlight as well.

As on Android, you can also turn to web apps, although Apple polices this quite closely as well. If something has been blocked from the Apple App Store, you might be able to get access to it through Safari or another web browser on your iPhone—the experience usually won't be as good as it is with a native app, but it's better than nothing.

How to install the Google Play Store on an Amazon Fire tablet

amazon fire max 11 review kindle back flat

The Amazon Fire lineup is filled with affordable Android tablets. Offering plenty of functionality without the price tag associated with products from Samsung or Lenovo, Amazon's home-grown family of tablets is an easy recommendation for frugal shoppers. There's a bit of caveat to the lineup, however, as none of them come preinstalled with the Google Play Store .

Allow apps from unknown sources

Know which amazon fire tablet you have, download the google play store, what you need.

Your Amazon Fire tablet

APK files for the Google Play Store

That means you won't have access to many of the great apps available on Google Play and will instead be limited to what's available on the Amazon App Store. And while Amazon does a lot of things well, its App Store leaves much to be desired. If you're looking to use the Google Play Store on an Amazon Fire tablet, you'll need to deal with a clunky (but fairly simple) workaround. Here's the easiest way to download Google Play on your Fire tablet.

Because you aren't able to download the Google Play Store directly from the Amazon App Store, you'll need to download it from the internet. However, Amazon Fire devices have a built-in setting that blocks the download of apps from sources other than the Amazon App Store. Before downloading Google Play, you'll need to disable that setting. Here's how:

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your Amazon Fire device.

Step 2: Select the Security & Privacy tab.

Step 3: In the Security & Privacy menu, select Apps from Unknown Sources .

Step 4: Select the Silk Browser option and then toggle the Allow from this source button.

Once you've enabled the ability to download apps from outside sources, you'll be ready to download the components necessary for running the Google Play Store. In order to do so, however, you'll need to know specifically what Amazon Fire tablet you're using. If you already know which model you have, skip this section, or follow along just to double check.

Step 1: Open the Settings app again, scroll down to the Device Options tab, and select it.

Step 2: Select the About Fire Tablet option.

Step 3: Check the information below the Device Model heading to learn which specific Amazon Fire model you're using.

With the knowledge of which Amazon Fire model you have, you'll be ready to download the four APKs necessary for running the Google Play Store. Take note that this process may wipe your microSD card if you're using one. Before downloading the following items, make sure to remove your microSD card from the slot just to be safe. Additionally, the APKs you'll be downloading are totally safe. However, the site that they're hosted on has a lot of misleading and potentially malicious ads that may try to confuse you into clicking on them. You should be able to avoid any issues as long as you only select the options listed below, so make sure that you're sticking to the steps closely.

Step 1: Open the Silk Browser app and navigate to this page so that you can tap on the links below.

Step 2: If you have the Fire 7 (8th, 9th, or 12th Generation), the Fire HD 8 (8th or 10th Generation), the Fire HD 10 (9th or 11th Generation), or the Fire Max 11, select this link and then select the red Download APK box:

Google Account Manager 7.1.2 (Android 6.0+)

If you have the Fire HD 6, the Fire 7 (7th Generation or older), the Fire HD 8 (7th Generation or older), the Fire HDX 8.9, or the Fire HD 10 (7th Generation or older), click on this link and then select the red Download APK box:

Google Account Manager 5.1-1743759 (Android 5.0+)

Step 3: After selecting the APK download prompt, exit the full-screen pop-up ad. You may get an additional pop-up from your Fire tablet that says the download may be harmful. Select Download anyway . Select this option every time you're prompted to in the following steps.

Step 4: Return to this page in the Silk Browser and click on this link if you have the Fire 7 (12th Generation), the Fire HD 8 (12th Generation), or the Fire Max 11, then select the red Download APK box:

Google Services Framework 10-6494331 (Android 10+)

If you have the Fire 7 (9th Generation), the Fire HD 8 (8th, 9th, or 10th Generation), or the Fire HD 10 (9th or 11th Generation), click this link and then select the red Download APK box:

Google Services Framework 9-4832352 (Android 9.0+)

If you have the Fire HD 6 (any version), the Fire 7 (7th Generation or older), the Fire HD 8 (7th Generation or older), the Fire HDX 8.9, or the Fire HD 10 (7th Generation or older), click this link and then select the red Download APK box:

Google Services Framework 5.1-1743759 (Android 5.1+)

Step 5: After selecting the red Download APK button, click out of the full page pop up ad and then select Download anyway .

Step 6: Return to this page using the Silk Browser and select the link below based on your Fire model. Be aware that when you click on the link, you won't be given a clear red Download APK button. Instead, you'll need to select the APK from a list of downloads. Find the APK that's closest to the top that doesn't say "beta" in its title, and select the download icon on the right side of the screen.

Fire 7 (12th Generation), Fire HD 8 (12th Generation), and Fire Max 11: Google Play Services (Android 11+)

Fire HD 8 (10th Generation) and Fire HD 10 (9th and 11th Generation): Google Play Services (Android 9.0+)

Fire 7 (9th Generation): Google Play Services (Android 6.0+)

Fire HD 8 (8th Generation): Google Play Services (Android 6.0+)

Fire HD 6, Fire 7 (7th Generation or older), Fire HD 8 (7th Generation or older), Fire HDX 8.9, Fire HD 10 (7th Generation or older): Google Play Services (Android 5.0+)

Step 7: Once you've selected your APK, scroll down and select the red Download APK button. Select Download anyway if you get the "Harmful file" pop-up.

Step 8: Once you've downloaded those three APKs, you'll only have one more item to download, which is universal across all Amazon Fire models. Return to this page with the Silk Browser and click on the link below. Like with the last step, select the APK that's closest to the top of the list that doesn't have the word "beta" in its file name.

Google Play Store

Step 9: After selecting the APK from the list, scroll down and select the blue Download APK button and then select the Download anyway option one final time.

Step 10: With those four downloads complete, you'll be ready to open the files and get the Google Play Store working on your Amazon Fire. Go to your home screen, open the Files app, and then go to the Downloads menu by selecting the tabs on the side of the screen and then selecting Downloads .

Step 11: Change your file view type to list view by selecting the icon in the corner that displays the files arranged in a list so that you can see their full titles. For the Google Play Store to work, you'll need to open the files in a specific order. When opening each, you may get a pop-up saying that you're opening a file from an unknown source. Select Continue. Open the files in this order and then select Install , then Done :

  • com.google.android.gsf.login
  • com.google.android.gsf
  • com.google.android.gms
  • com.android.vending

Step 12: After installing all four APK files, you should see the Google Play Store app added to your home screen. If you don't see it, you may need to restart your tablet. From here, you can select the app, log into your Google account, and start downloading apps from the store.

And just like that, you've successfully added Google Play to your Amazon Fire tablet! You can now download any apps/games that you want from the Play Store, many of which aren't available on the Amazon App Store.

Let's face it: Most of us don't call our own phones very often. If you're like most people, this means you probably don't know your own phone number off-hand, especially if you rarely give it out to people or haven't had it for long, such as after setting up a new account or changing your number after moving to a new town.

To make things even more complicated, many modern smartphones let you set up more than one line using an eSIM, which gives you more than one number to remember.

It’s an exciting time for Android tablets. Into the vacuum left in 2023 by Apple’s first-ever dearth of new iPads stepped two new contenders offering distinct takes on what a tablet should be, while Samsung’s venerable Tab S9 lineup raised the bar by cementing the position of its largest tablet and bringing AMOLED screens to the entire family.

There’s no reason to believe that this year will be any less interesting as Samsung continues to up its game while Google and OnePlus try to refine their initial first-generation efforts into more mature products.

How to Access Safari Browser on Android

Safari Browser is primarily designed for Apple devices and is not officially available for Android. However, if you still want to experience Safari on your Android device, you can try alternative methods to access it:

  • Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
  • Search for third-party browsers that offer a Safari-like browsing experience. Look for browsers that mention Safari compatibility or a similar user interface.
  • Install the Safari-like browser of your choice from the search results.
  • Once the installation is complete, locate the newly installed browser on your home screen or app drawer.
  • Tap on the newly installed browser to open it.
  • The browser’s interface and features may resemble Safari, but it is important to note that it is not the official Safari Browser developed by Apple.
  • Start browsing the web using the address bar or search bar provided by the Safari-like browser.
  • Explore the features and customize the settings according to your preference.
  • You can open multiple tabs in the browser to browse multiple websites simultaneously, similar to Safari.
  • To close the Safari-like browser, simply press the home button or navigate to the app switcher and swipe it away.

Keep in mind that while these alternative browsers may provide a similar experience to Safari on Android, they may not have all the features and optimizations of the official Safari Browser. It is essential to read user reviews and check the compatibility of the browser with your specific Android device before installing.

Remember, Safari is primarily designed for Apple devices, and if you have an Android device, there are many other great browsers available on the Google Play Store that are specifically designed for Android and offer a seamless browsing experience.

Troubleshooting and Common Issues

While Safari is a reliable and user-friendly browser, you may encounter occasional issues or glitches. Here are some common troubleshooting tips for addressing Safari-related problems:

  • Clear Cache and Cookies: If Safari is loading pages slowly or displaying outdated content, clearing the cache and cookies can often resolve the issue. Go to Safari’s preferences, select the “Privacy” tab, and click on “Manage Website Data” to clear the cache and cookies.
  • Disable Extensions: Browser extensions can sometimes conflict with Safari and cause performance issues. Temporarily disable or remove any unnecessary extensions to see if that resolves the problem.
  • Update Safari: Keeping your browser up to date is essential for optimal performance and security. Check for updates in the App Store (for iOS and macOS) or in the Microsoft Store (for Windows) to ensure you’re using the latest version of Safari .
  • Restart your Device: Sometimes, a simple restart can solve temporary glitches or issues with Safari. Close the browser, restart your device, and then open Safari again to see if the problem persists.
  • Reset Safari Settings: If Safari is still acting up, you can try resetting its settings to default. Go to Safari’s preferences and select the “Advanced” tab. Click on “Reset” and choose the options you want to reset, such as history, bookmarks, and extensions.
  • Disable Pop-up Blocker: If certain websites or web pages are not loading properly, it may be because Safari’s pop-up blocker is preventing the content from appearing. Go to Safari’s preferences and select the “Websites” tab. In the left sidebar, select “Pop-up Windows” and make sure the desired websites are not blocked.
  • Check Internet Connection: Slow or unstable internet connectivity can affect Safari’s performance. Ensure that you have a stable and reliable internet connection by checking your Wi-Fi or cellular data settings.

If the above troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue, it may be helpful to seek assistance from Apple Support or consult online forums and communities dedicated to Safari users. Remember, these suggestions are general troubleshooting tips, and more specific solutions may be required depending on the nature of the problem.

In conclusion, Safari Browser offers a seamless and user-friendly browsing experience across various devices. Whether you’re using a Mac, iPhone, iPad, or even a Windows PC, Safari provides a range of features and benefits that make it a top choice among internet users.

How to see the price history of any amazon product.

Amazon's product prices fluctuate a lot, especially around Prime Day and Black Friday. Those price variants can drop on Amazon even lower than you think if you know which price tracking tools to use. Whether you want to purchase smart home products or Kindle e-readers , use third-party tools to track the price history of any item. One of the most reliable ways to check an Amazon product's price history is camelcamelcamel. We show you how to make the most of it.

How to share your Amazon Prime account with your family

Make the most of your Prime membership by adding the whole family

What is camelcamelcamel?

The easiest way to view an Amazon product's price history is by checking a dedicated Amazon price tracker. Visit the camelcamelcamel homepage to search for product prices, view price history charts, and set up notifications for products you're interested in.

Amazon price tracking is set by location. If you don't regularly shop at Amazon.com, you can check products bought from other locations (for example, Amazon.ca). The camelcamelcamel web page includes sections for Popular Products and Top Amazon Price Drops, where you can sort products by type and select filters like Top Daily Drops.

The only downside of using camelcamelcamel is that it only factors in the price of a product. It doesn't include the cost of shipping and handling, but it lets you know if an item qualifies for Prime Shipping.

How to use camelcamelcamel to check Amazon price history

Below, we walk you through how to use camelcamelcamel to view Amazon's price history for any listed product.

  • Open a new tab, visit the Amazon homepage , and search for a product.
  • Return to the camelcamelcamel web page.

Clicking the Amazon Price History graph navigates you back to the Amazon product page listing. All Amazon data is listed in green. To include third-party purchase options, check 3rd party New or 3rd party Used under Price Type .

Manually refreshing the product history may take too much effort. Some prices drop more frequently than others, and you don't want to miss a great sale. You can sign up for alerts without creating an account. All that's required is your email address and desired account.

How to install the Camelizer browser extension

A straightforward way to see an Amazon product's price history is to use the Camelizer browser add-on. That way, you won't switch between two websites to analyze the price changes.

Clicking the Camelizer extension displays a product's price history while shopping on Amazon. You can also use this add-on to sign up for the camelcamelcamel price tracking alerts. Below, we illustrate how to add the Camelizer extension to Google Chrome.

You must have a supported web browser. You can install the extension only on Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Apple Safari.

  • Open Google Chrome and visit camelcamelcamel.com .

The extension doesn't work on mobile browsers.

Use the Camelizer Chrome Extension

While you're browsing Amazon, click a product listing. After opening that page, click the puzzle icon to view your extensions.

Click Camelizer to see historical price trends labeled with the same product details you're viewing. You can now see its Amazon price history.

Use Keepa to check Amazon's price history

If camelcamelcamel doesn't work as expected, use Keepa to track the prices of products on Amazon. Keepa has apps on both platforms, offers extensions on all the popular browsers like Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Edge, and Safari, and supports Amazon US, Amazon Canada, Amazon UK, Amazon India, and other marketplaces. You can track a specific item or an entire wishlist of your Amazon account. Let's check it in action.

  • Head to the Chrome Web Store , and download and install Keepa extension .
  • Select a language at the top and pick an Amazon locale. Let's select Amazon.com for now.
  • You can check the Amazon listing title, price, discounted price, color (if applicable), and other details.

Safari is the best way to experience the internet on all your Apple devices. It brings robust customization options, features powerful privacy protections, and optimizes battery life — so you can browse how you like, when you like. And when it comes to speed, it’s the world’s fastest browser. 1

Privacy is built in.

Safari comes with industry-leading privacy protection technology built in, including Intelligent Tracking Prevention that identifies trackers and helps prevent them from profiling or following you across the web. And Private Browsing adds even more protections, such as locking your windows when you’re not using them. Online privacy isn’t just something you should hope for — it’s something you should expect.

Safari stops trackers in their tracks.

What you browse is no one’s business but your own. Safari has built‑in protections to help stop websites and data-collection companies from watching and profiling you based on your browsing activity. Intelligent Tracking Prevention uses on‑device intelligence to help prevent cross‑site tracking and stops known trackers from using your IP address — making it incredibly difficult to learn who you are and what you’re interested in.

Privacy Report

Safari makes it simple to see how your privacy is protected on all the websites you visit. Click Privacy Report in the Safari menu for a snapshot of cross-site trackers currently prevented from profiling you on the website you’re visiting. Or view a weekly Privacy Report to see how Safari protects you as you browse over time.

Surf safe and sound.

Strong security protections in Safari help keep you safe. Passkeys introduce a safer way to sign in. iCloud Keychain securely stores and autofills passkeys and passwords across all your devices. Safari also notifies you when it encounters suspicious websites and prevents them from loading. Because it loads each web page in a separate process, any harmful code is always confined to a single browser tab so it won’t crash the entire application or access your data. And Safari automatically upgrades sites from HTTP to the more secure HTTPS when available.

Passkeys introduce a more secure and easier way to sign in. No passwords required.

Passkeys are end-to-end encrypted and safe from phishing and data leaks, and they are stronger than all common two-factor authentication types. Thanks to iCloud Keychain, they work across all your Apple devices, and they even work on non-Apple devices.

Apple Pay and Wallet make checkout as easy as lifting a finger.

Apple Pay is the easiest and most secure way to shop on Safari — allowing you to complete transactions with Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad, with Touch ID on your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, or by double-clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.

With AutoFill, you can easily fill in your previously saved credit card information from the Wallet app during checkout. Your credit card details are never shared, and your transactions are protected with industry-leading security.

Same Safari. Different device.

Safari works seamlessly and syncs your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and more across Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch. And when your Mac, iOS, or iPadOS devices are near each other, they can automatically pass what you’re doing in Safari from one device to another using Handoff. You can even copy images, video, or text from Safari on your iPhone or iPad, then paste into another app on your nearby Mac — or vice versa.

can you install safari on android

When you use Safari on multiple devices, your tabs carry over from one Apple device to another. So you can search, shop, work, or browse on your iPhone, then switch to your iPad or Mac and pick up right where you left off.

Save web pages you want to read later by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the internet.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passkeys, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites — as well as apps on iOS and iPadOS — and quickly make online purchases.

One of the best things about Android is all the browsers at your disposal. Google Chrome comes as the default browser on many devices, but you don't have to use it. We'll show you how easy it is to change.

Google Chrome is a very good browser, but it's not the only one. Microsoft Edge is good and has a few advantages over Chrome. Mozilla Firefox is a classic and it's still going strong. Samsung's Internet Browser is available on non-Samsung devices and is surprisingly nice as well. You have options.

Many Android browsers will ask you to set them as the default when you first open the app. If you missed that option or you just want to change things up, you can change your browser app in a few taps.

Related: Why I Use Microsoft Edge on Android

First, swipe down once or twice (depending on your phone) from the top of the screen and tap the gear icon to open the Settings.

Next, go to the "Apps" section.

Now select "Default Apps" or "Choose Default Apps."

Finally, tap "Browser App."

Here you'll see all the apps you have installed that can be the default browser. Simply choose the one you'd like to use.

That's all there is to it. When you tap a link in an email or some other app, this is the browser that will launch and display the page. Changing default apps is one of the core features of Android. It's something you should be using if you're not.

How to open the Chrome Web Store and install extensions

T he Chrome Web Store has thousands of themes and extensions that add new visuals and features to your Chrome browser. Are you looking for a new Chromebook on a budget ? Use an extension that finds coupon codes for the item you're shopping for. Need help writing? Use a writing assistant extension powered by the Gemini or ChatGPT large language models .

If you want to boost your productivity or change its appearance, here's how to explore the Google Chrome Web Store to see what upgrades and add-ons are available.

ChatGPT vs. Gemini: Which gives the better answers?

Open the chrome web store from google chrome.

If you use Google Chrome on your Windows PC or Mac, here's how to open the Chrome Web Store from the Google Chrome browser.

  • Select the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner of the address bar to see a menu of options.
  • Hover over the Extensions submenu, then select Visit Chrome Web Store .
  • A new tab opens, showing the Chrome Web Store extensions page. From there, browse extensions using the carousel at the top or by scrolling down and checking out the cards on the main page.
  • Choose the type of extension by selecting a category from the left sidebar. Google offers suggestions in the Recommended for you category and provides other categories, including Accessibility , Blogging , Productivity , and Shopping .
  • Or, type keywords in the search box in the upper-right corner to find particular tools and extensions that make it convenient to access the information you need.
  • Select the Themes option in the upper-left corner to browse the custom styles.

How to install Chrome extensions and themes

After you've found something you like, install the extension by opening it in the Chrome Web Store and selecting the Add to Chrome button in the upper-right corner. A popup window provides you with privacy and security information about the extension. Select Add extension to continue.

It's common for an extension to need permission to read and change data on websites you visit. Some extensions can be customized to restrict which websites they can access. All extensions can be deactivated and uninstalled if you want to take a break or remove them.

With a Chrome theme, choose Add to Chrome , and the new theme becomes active immediately.

How to use Chrome extensions

Some Chrome extensions begin working as soon as you install them, while others require some setup. You can access some extensions in the toolbar that appears to the right of the address bar. Toolbar extensions appear as icons. Click them to activate them, or right-click for more options.

To manage extensions:

  • Select the icon at the far right of the toolbar that looks like a jigsaw puzzle piece, then choose Manage Extensions from the popup menu.
  • Alternatively, use the more menu in the upper-right corner, hover over Extensions , and choose Manage Extensions .
  • A new tab opens, showing the extensions you installed on your computer.
  • You'll see a toggle switch that's blue when turned on and gray when turned off. There are also buttons to show more Details and to Remove an extension.

Open the Chrome Web Store from a Chromebook

ChromeOS is great for most computing needs, and our guide to the best Chromebooks can help if you want to switch away from Windows and macOS.

The Chrome browser is the primary interface on a Chromebook, so Chrome extensions are important. Use the methods mentioned above to open the Chrome Web Store from your Chrome browser.

You can also open the Chrome Web Store from the Launcher. Select the round button in the lower-left corner and type Web Store in the search box. When it appears in the list, choose it to open the Chrome Web Store in a browser tab. Pin it on your shelf when you're done with it so that it's easy to find again.

How to pin apps and websites to your Chromebook's shelf

What about chrome apps.

You might find references to Chrome apps online, but they are no longer supported except for Google Enterprise and Education customers and partners. Google said Chrome app support has been extended for these users "until at least January 2025." For everyone else, they are no longer accessible in the Chrome Web Store, and existing Chrome apps won't execute.

Google Chrome apps require a compatible web browser because they are built with web-friendly languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. These apps look similar to Windows and macOS apps and open in their own windows.

It was a great idea, and many Chrome apps were developed, but a new technology called progressive web apps (PWA) is a better option for web developers who want to create lightweight apps that run everywhere.

Open the Chrome Web Store from another browser

Several browsers are compatible with Chrome extensions and themes. For example, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Brave browsers support Chrome extensions.

Apple's Safari browser supports extensions but is not compatible with Chrome extensions. However, you can install the Chrome browser on a Mac if you need to access a Chrome extension. Many Chrome extensions work in Firefox, but there are some incompatibilities . Check if your browser is supported by opening the Chrome Web Store using this link .

Are Chrome extensions available for Android and iOS?

Chrome extensions are designed for computers, not smartphones. The default browser on most Android phones is Chrome, which doesn't support extensions. On an iPhone, the default Safari browser only supports Safari extensions.

Some third-party mobile browsers support Chrome extensions, but extensions aren't made for small screens and might not work correctly on your smartphone.

Visit the Google Chrome Web Store and simplify your life

Now that you know how to use the Chrome Web Store, pack your Chrome with some extensions. We have a complete list of recommendations for the best Chrome extensions that you might find helpful.

Put them to the test. You'd be amazed at how the newly released artificial intelligence extensions can save you time and help you be more efficient. Your future self will surely appreciate the effort.

Safari Browser APK for Android

Safari Browser

Safari is a browser for iOS that’s now available for Android. It has most features of the original and functions the same way. You get Dark Mode, Private Browsing, and other minor options. The speed is still there almost no load times between pages.

Security-wise, there’s no way to tell if it retains the level of protection of iOS. The settings are very limited. You have the basic setup like cookies and history management. Nothing your Firefox or Chrome can’t already do. There are no special utilities that entice you to replace your default.

Lightning-fast speed

The best thing about Safari is its speed. It’s lightning-fast. You can say it rivals even Chrome when it comes to loading time. Download time is also great, but not as fast as the iOS version. Switching between pages and tabs are seamless.

The interface is very clean and easy to use. You don’t have that many adjustment options to choose from, but then again, that’s the whole point. The design is to keep things as simple as possible. They may have gotten carried away on simplicity. The Android version doesn’t retain the sophistication of its iOS counterpart.

Too few choices make the whole app look empty and dated.

Doesn’t use many resources

Safari comes in a small size, which makes sense, considering it doesn’t have any plugins. It uses less data than mainstream Android browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer. The app is also lenient on your RAM. So, you can run more programs alongside it, no problem. Having multiple tabs doesn’t slow down your process, either.

All tabs are interconnected

There are no indications that Safari protects Android users from data collection or malicious sites. It doesn’t handle each tab as a separate instance like Chrome. This means if one tab crashes, so do the others. That says enough about the lack of security. You also don’t have the restore previous session option after a crash.

Other than the built-in Dark Mode, this browser doesn’t offer any other extensions. You can still sync your Google account, but it wouldn’t carry over the addons you had. You will have to use specific plugins for Safari, and there aren’t many of them for this version.

Fast but not secure

The app has good overall qualities and is reliable when it comes to speed. Unfortunately, that’s the extent of its advantages. If all you do is browse the internet, Safari is the way to go.

For more sensitive tasks, stick with your default. There is nothing this browser offers that your main one doesn’t already do. It also doesn’t retain the level of protection that the iOS version has. There’s no guarantee that you’ll be safe as it claims.
