10 Best Places to Visit in Indonesia

' src=

With 18,330 islands, 6,000 of them inhabited, Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. The island nation is home to 167 active volcanoes, far more than any other country and has some of the largest remaining tracts of tropical forest anywhere in the world.

Indonesia is both a leisure seeker’s dream and an adventurer’s playground. Whether you’re looking to bronze on beautiful beaches, hike in search of endangered orangutan, or snorkel amongst some of the most beautiful coral reefs on Earth, Indonesia has something for everyone.

Explore the last Indonesian city still ruled by an ancient monarchy, follow in the literal footsteps of rare Komodo dragons, and soak in steamy hot springs surrounded by nothing but wild, raw jungle. If you’re looking for magic hidden in the everyday, you’ve found it. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in Indonesia.

10. Raja Ampat Islands [SEE MAP]

Raja Ampat Islands

An island cluster on the northwestern tip of Papua New Guinea, Raja Ampat is one of the most sensational diving destinations in Indonesia. Raja Ampat – which means ‘Four Kings’ – is made up of four major jungle-clad islands surrounded by turquoise lagoons and pearly-white palm-fringed beaches – Waigeo, Salawati, Misool, and Batanta – along with thousands of smaller islands.

The archipelago is celebrated for its rich marine life and underwater coral reefs – home to as many as 75% of all known coral species! With everything from underwater photography to wreck diving, it’s so beautiful, you should definitely invest in an underwater camera.

But the fun isn’t limited to offshore. The islands are also a fantastic bird-watching destination. Pack your binoculars and keep your eyes peeled for eagles swooping overhead and birds of paradise such as the Wilson’s and Cendrawash chirping in the treetops while you trek to waterfalls and mysterious age-old caves.

9. Tanjung Puting National Park [SEE MAP]

Tanjung Puting National Park

Tanjung Puting National Park is one of the world’s natural wonders celebrated for its endangered orangutans – some of the last of these orange, long-haired primates on Earth.

Located in the jungles of Borneo – the third-largest island in the world that’s part of Indonesia, Malaysia and the sultanate of Brunei – the park is home to a variety of wild lowland habitats on a peninsula overlooking the Java Sea. Habitats range from swamp forests to alluvial plains and ocean coastline that provides a home to a diverse array of wildlife – so diverse that it was declared a game reserve before being deemed a national park in 1982.

While orangutans are the obvious draw, you’ll also be able to spot the odd-nosed proboscis monkey, the vulnerable clouded leopard, and over 200 species of birds in the park. Couple these rare animal sightings with fresh jungle air and no light pollution making for excellent star gazing, and the park makes for the perfect adventure. Explore on foot or by klotok boat with a knowledgeable guide – it’s up to you.

8. Flores Island [SEE MAP]

Flores Island

The Indonesian island of Flores means ‘Flowers’ in Portuguese, a name that hails from the European missionaries who arrived in the 16th-century. Lying to the east of Sumbawa and to the west of Lembata in Nusa Tenggara, the long island of Flores is famous for its amazing multi-colored crater lakes around Mount Kelimutu, traditional village homestays, and endless opportunities for adventure tourism.

The lakes are truly a sight to behold in every color you can think of – from browns and greens to aqua blue; colors caused by the minerals reacting to the gas of the region’s volcanoes. The Kelimutu three-colored lake is a must-see from the top of the volcano at sunrise.

For those in search of more physical activity, Egon volcano can be reached with a self-guided or guided hike. The north coast has many offshore islands and coral reefs to explore with an exhilarating dive or snorkel. Or you can simply relax and soak your tired muscles in the enchanting hot springs hidden within the jungle – bliss!

7. Torajaland [SEE MAP]

Torajaland

Nicknamed ‘the Land of the Heavenly Kings,’ Torajaland (Tana Toraja) is tucked within the lush central highlands of Indonesia’s Southern Sulawesi, a region that’s dotted with rice fields, limestone peaks, and bamboo-clad hills. Home to the Toraja, a Christian and animist people, Tana Toraja has a fascinating culture that’s remained largely and surprisingly independent from western influence.

Torajans are famous for their massive peaked-roof houses known as tongkonan and spectacular but gruesome funeral rites. After a person’s death, the body is kept – often for several years – until the actual funeral ceremony, which can last for several days. The deceased is then finally buried in a small cave or in a hollow tree. The biggest funerals are usually held in the dry-season months of July and August, but there are funerals year-round.

Exploring Tana Toraja with a local guide is expensive but worth it. They’ll give you a sneaky glimpse into these interesting customs and some of the lesser-known burial sites and village compounds known for their colorful exteriors and boat-shaped rooftops. Visit by yourself, and you’ll still be able to see some of the more famous sites on a trekking trip, but you’ll lack the local insight and insider tips that these tours afford.

6. Bukit Lawang [SEE MAP]

Bukit Lawang

Bukit Lawang is a small village situated at the eastern side of Gunung Leuser National Park about 90 kilometers northwest of Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra. A rehabilitation center for orangutans was founded here in 1973. The main purpose is to preserve the decreasing number of orangutan population due to hunting and deforestation.

The ecotourism here provides jobs and an income for local families living in the village and is a worthy charity to support, if not for the animals alone. The chance to see orangutans in the wild is the major drawcard, but the village is also a worthy stop. It’s built in a sustainable way that takes the surrounding environment into consideration.

Bukit Lawang is a popular destination for guided jungle trekking, acting as the gateway to the Gunung Leuser National Park. Here, you can spot Thomas Leaf Monkeys with their unusual haircuts, walk in the footprints of tigers and elephants, and explore on foot with local bird and nature walks.

5. Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park [SEE MAP]

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park

Tucked within East Java, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is an ethereal yet barren wonderland of volcanic calderas seemingly continuously surrounded by smoke and clouds. The park gets its name from the merging of the Hindu Tengger people and the two mountains found in the park – Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru. The latter is the highest mountain in the Java region, and one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia.

The draw here is less about wildlife and more about the scenery, yet there are still some interesting animals to be seen, such as Java rusa deer, marbled cats, wild pigs, and the occasional leopard. The best part about a visit to this park is the chance to climb a volcano at sunrise for some of the most exceptional views across this otherworldly landscape.

For those who wish to climb this still-active volcano, a permit from the national park authority is required, and you’ll only be allowed to ascend when the mountain isn’t erupting. Mount Bromo is another prominent landmark in the park, characterized by its often-billowing collapsed crater peeking out above the lush lowland valleys.

4. Lombok [SEE MAP]

Lombok

An increasingly popular alternative to overly commercial Bali, Lombok and its offshore coral-ringed Gili Islands are tropical paradises. Here, you can enjoy all the appeal of Bali before tourism took over – surfing hotspots, uncrowded beaches , and magical waterfalls tucked within steamy jungles, of which Tiu Kelep Waterfall tops the list without question.

Backpackers head to Lombok in search of adventure. This is likely because its volcano-topped jungle provides for a great trek surrounded by unforgettable scenery. If you’re planning on hiking the Gunung Rinjani volcano and its photogenic crater lake, make sure you’re fit and have booked with a reputable guide – it’s by no means a walk in the park!

There’s also a fantastic nightlife scene when the sun goes down on the satellite islands of Gili, particularly Gili Trawangan. Those in search of culture won’t be disappointed either – the markets in Mataram are a vibrant place to pick up souvenirs while mingling with the locals.

3. Komodo National Park [SEE MAP]

Komodo National Park

Located in Indonesia’s Nusa Tenggara region, Komodo National Park is famous for one thing and one thing only – its reptilian namesake, the Komodo dragon. Spread across three main islands – Komodo, Rinca, and Padar – as well as a collection of smaller islets, the park provides a sanctuary for this strange looking creature reminiscent of the dinosaurs. It’s the largest living lizard on the planet and can reach a mighty three meters in length! The reptiles roam freely over the islands, and visitors rely on experienced tour guides for sightings and to keep them safe.

Today, the park has expanded to include the conservation of the entire ecosystem both on land and in the ocean. There are several endemic species, such as Rinca rats and fruit bats, as well as wild horses, long-tailed macaques, water buffalo, and several species of dangerous snakes.

But while the terrestrial beings within the Komodo National Park are definitely worth seeing, it’s the marine life that really stands out. The park protects some of the most abundant marine landscapes in the world, part of the Coral Triangle, home to more than 250 species of coral and a plethora of sea sponges and unusual bony fish.

2. Yogyakarta [SEE MAP]

Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is a bustling town of some 500,000 people and the most popular tourist destination on Java, due to its proximity to the famous temples of Borobudur and Prambanan. The city itself is a center of education and culture, particularly for Javanese fine arts – from theater to ballet performances, and has a wide range of tourist facilities. It is also the last Indonesian city still ruled by a monarchy.

Yogyakarta lies in one of the most seismically active parts of Java and has thus repeatedly been struck by earthquakes and volcano eruptions. In 2006 an earthquake flattened over 300,000 houses while in 2010 the nearby volcano of Mount Merapi erupted, spewing lava over nearby villages.

Apart from nearby Buddhist and Hindu temples, and the sights in the city itself – small enough that it can be explored on foot – Yogyakarta is also a great base for exploring the surrounding villages locked in time by hardened lava on a Merapi Lava Tour, an activity that’s both sobering and captivating.

1. Bali [SEE MAP]

#1 of Best Places To Visit In Indonesia

One of the most visited and dreamed-of destinations on the modern traveler bucket list, Bali is a kaleidoscope of beautiful beaches, volcanic hills, lush rice paddies, and thousands upon thousands of Indonesian temples. It’s celebrated for its laidback atmosphere that’s attracted backpackers, surfers, and yogis for years, who have come in search of finding their Zen in this tropical paradise.

Nicknamed the ‘Island of the Gods,’ Bali is deeply rooted in the spiritual, with endless Hindu temples boasting colorful architecture all of their own – particularly in Ubud , Bali’s spiritual capital. Yet all of Bali’s wonders have not gone unnoticed, and the island can get uncomfortably packed during the tourist season around August. If possible, school holidays are best avoided too.

Spend your days relaxing on some of Bali’s best beaches and diving in the Coral Triangle with its endless array of magical marine life. But the best part about Bali is just as much about doing a little as a lot. Read your book in a hammock, watch the sun go down, and feel the island’s slow, laidback vibe step up the pace at one of the many animated beachfront bars.

Kuta is kind of like the Tijuana of Bali. The streets are narrow here and there are hundreds of stalls, selling faux-brand ripoffs, novelty souvenirs. There are plenty of hotels and you are sure to get some great sun time in, but the frantic energy here is only inviting for so long.

It has comfortable luxury resorts that will make you feel in a world of your own. The Most Beautiful National Parks in Indonesia

17. komodo national park.

Komodo national park, Indonesia

18. Tanjung Puting National Park

Tanjung Puting National Park is a vast, mostly untouched tropical jungle. Visit it to indulge in heavenly fresh air, mystical morning fog and rivers gushing. Still not sold? It’s also home to the wild orangutan, the adorable primate that steals the hearts of many with its loveliness and wit.

19. West Bali National Park

20. bromo tengger semeru national park.

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, East Java, Indonesia

This national park highlights Mount Bromo, an awe-inspiring active volcano that sits in the middle of a plain called Segara Wedi (Sea of Sand). The iconic blown-off top, showing an active crater that emits white sulfurous smoke, has been one of the most popular sceneries from Indonesia. The national park also has Mount Semeru, also known as “The Great Mountain” or Mahameru, the highest and one of the most active volcanoes in Java. The “Tengger” from the national park’s name refers to the Tengger people who inhabit the area around the park, an ancient community believed to be descendants of the Majapahit Kingdom’s princes.

Kerinci Seblat National Park

The expansive national park spans over four provinces in Sumatra and includes the country’s second highest volcano peak, Mount Kerinci . The unspoiled nature helps wildlife to thrive in this area, making the national park a home to a mixture of peculiar species. More than 4,000 plant species also call the park home, including the world’s largest flower, Rafflesia arnoldi, and also the tallest flower, Titan arum . The area is also the natural habitat of protected wild species of tigers, rhinoceroses, and birds.

Ujung Kulon National Park

The massive Krakatoa explosion in 1883 wiped out villages, which, in turn, caused humans to flee, in the area that now makes up the national park, allowing the peninsula to host various flora and fauna. Decades later, people returned, but only to preserve and observe the vibrant wildlife in the lowland rainforest. The park includes the Krakatoa islets, some small nearby islands, and the peninsula area at the westernmost of Java. The protected park is home to numerous endangered animals and plants species, including the iconic one-horned rhinoceros, Java mouse-deer, silvery gibbon, and more.

Way Kambas National Park

Located in Lampung, Sumatra, the Way Kambas National Park is home to some critically endangered species, including Sumatran elephants, tigers, and rhinoceroses. Locally, the park is well known as a habitat and conservation area for elephants where visitors can interact with the animals. The park also has an elephant training center with accommodations nearby. It also has mangrove areas, freshwater forests, and a coastline. Sadly, the park and the endangered animals are under constant threat of poaching.

Baluran National Park

This national park is often dubbed “Indonesia’s little Africa”, and for good reason. Compared to other national parks that are dominated by lush tropical forests, this location has a dry climate that sustains different sets of plants, birds, and mammals ecosystem. The area covers vast mountainous areas and savanna, where endangered mammals like banteng, Java mouse-deer, fishing cat, Javan leopard, and the Javan lutung roam free. Also in the neighborhood are hundreds of endangered plants and endemic birds. Standing tall at its center is the extinct volcano Mount Baluran. Tourists can sign up for an organized safari tour arranged by the park to ensure a more convenient and safe adventure.

Gunung Leuser National Park

For wildlife enthusiasts who fancy a real jungle experience, this conservation area is among the most pristine and wild in Indonesia, especially the part that belongs to the Special Region of Aceh. The diverse wildlife is thriving, sustained by dense vegetation and untouched nature, leading this location to be referred to as a “complete ecosystem laboratory”. Contrary to confined animals at zoos or some other conservation centers, the orangutans, monkeys, elephants, and rhinoceros in this park are at least semi-wild, or even wild.

Tangkoko National Park

Located in less-traveled eastern Indonesia, this nature reserve does not receive as much credit as it deserves. Sulawesi itself is one of Indonesia’s foremost wildlife fronts, supporting the lives of countless endemic and exotic species. At 8,890 hectares, Tangkoko has more than tourists could ever hope for, including the Sulawesi’s prima donna bird , the Maleo. A stroll through the jungle pretty much guarantees encounters with unique species like the world’s smallest primate Tarsius and black tailless monkeys.

Places in Indonesia Even Locals Don’t Know About

21. beji guwang canyon.

Also known as “the hidden canyon of Beji Guwang”, this beautiful spot has managed to escape Bali’s bustling tourism scene . Some people who have been lucky enough to witness its beauty have said that you can observe various human expressions in the canyon’s curves. Located near the popular Sukawati Market and the temple of Pura Dalem Guwang, this place is considered sacred by locals.

Pulau Biawak

Komodo Island , the land of the mighty komodo dragon, is well-known, but not many people know about a similar island off Indramayu, West Java. Giant monitor lizards roam free, along with other exotic bird and fish species. The island is also home to a majestic lighthouse built during Indonesia’s colonial era. Pulau Biawak, or Biawak Island, is characterized by dense mangrove in the middle and stunning beaches with rich corals around the edge.

Parangkusumo Sand Dunes

It might be surprising to learn about such sand dunes on a beautiful tropical archipelago like Indonesia. Even many locals don’t suspect that Yogyakarta hides massive sandbanks. Located near a more popular destination, the Parangkusumo Beach, this sandbank attracts travelers and adventurers to try sand-boarding in a natural landscape so rare in Indonesia.

best travel places in indonesia

Pulau Pombo

Pulau Pombo, or Pombo Island, is a hidden tropical paradise in Ambon, Maluku, in the less-traveled east region of Indonesia. This small island is inhabited by pombo birds, two-colored pigeons unique to the region. As a remote pristine island, Pulau Pombo has clean white sand, lush greenery, and sparkling blue water. But the area is as beautiful underwater as it is on land, with flourishing coral adding vibrant colors to the brilliant blue ocean.

Danau Kakaban

This lake in Kakaban Island, East Kalimantan (Borneo) is also known as the jellyfish lake for an obvious reason. Danau Kakaban (Kakaban Lake) is home to at least four different species of jellyfish with one thing in common: they do not sting. So, the hundreds of jellyfish floating underwater is more of an attraction for tourists than an annoyance. They live in the rather peculiar habitat of a semi-salt-water lake trapped inside a small island. Therefore, the species living in the lake show atypical behaviors that have captivated scientists and adventurers alike.

Tebing Lamreh

A natural pavilion from which to enjoy a picturesque view of the coastline, cliffs, ocean, and jungles, Tebing Lamreh is a hidden paradise in the Special Region of Aceh. From this cliff, tourists can see Weh Island, the westernmost point of Indonesia, and other small islands scattered in the ocean. The cool fresh breeze and sunset views are further reasons to visit this place.

Air Terjun Laguna

Air Terjun Laguna (Laguna Waterfall) is a remote attraction nestled in the middle of dense pine woods. Not many eyes have seen this place, but those who have could have sworn that this is the most beautiful waterfall in Indonesia. Surrounded by lush vegetation, exquisite birds and butterflies, and epic cliffs, this waterfall is certainly worth the long journey through the woods.

Edelweiss Garden of Pananjakan

Most locals (and many international tourists) have heard or witnessed the captivating beauty of Mount Bromo, an active volcano in East Java. But few have traveled the extra mile to reach the carpets of edelweiss flowers, framed by the beautiful mountain. The beauty of this savanna matches the world-famous sunrises, and tourists can actually enjoy both in one visit.

Tebing Citatah

This magnificent cliff complex remains unknown to many locals. On weekdays, some of the cliffs are occupied by the training military, proving that this is not an adventure for just anyone. In fact, you have to be a certified rock climber to even attempt to ascend to some of the cliffs. But once you do, you’ll have an unrestricted view of the city. Located in Padalarang, Bandung, this spot is near the better-known Pawon Cave and Stone Garden.

Danau Idenberg

Located in the middle of the Jayawijaya ridge, the beauty of Danau Idenberg (Idenberg Lake) is reserved for those who are fit and adventurous enough to reach it. This lake is considered mysterious because sometimes the water overflows, while at other times it appears to be dry. Some mountain climbers have also reported sightings of black swans, considered odd due to the height and atmosphere. The surrounding white-flecked mountaintops are a rare sight in a tropical paradise like Indonesia.

The Most Difficult Places to Visit in Indonesia

22. jomblang and grubug cave, central java.

This vertical cave requires skill, experience, gear and courage to explore. Study and practice single-rope technique before driving to the cave’s mouth. To reach the bottom of the sinkhole–where peculiar ancient species that had never seen the sun dwell–adventurers will have to conquer the slippery vertical drop. Jomblang is actually just part of a massive cave system through the Mount Kidul area, and there’s a pitch black tunnel that will lead you to the adjacent Grubug Cave, with its famous ‘heaven’s light’.

Mount Leuser, Aceh

Hiking this mountain is made difficult by the complicated and unpredictable land—dense untouched jungles, rushing rivers, steep rocks. But the real danger and challenge lies in the wildlife. Even if you stay right on track, there are real possibilities of encountering snakes, bears, even tigers. The summit of Mount Leuser can be reached in about two weeks. The mountain is located in a relatively remote area, and to reach the starting point tourists have to switch flights in the country’s Sharia-governed Aceh Province.

Breueh Island, Aceh

Sabang is the westernmost city of Indonesia. Further to the northwest is Breueh Island, one of the most beautiful and remote islands in the region. To reach it you’ll have to find a fisherman on a nearby island who doesn’t mind taking extra passengers, as there’s no ferry or organized boat operators there.

Lake Kaco, Jambi

This mystical lake has become somewhat like a fairy-tale, as not many tourists are prepared to traverse 500 kilometers of jungle between the lake and the nearest town, Jambi. The road trip takes at least 10 hours, followed by four hours of walking through dense jungles. The luminescent lake is approximately 30 meters wide and surrounded by lush jungle. Although the opulent blue water is breathtaking, Lake Kaco is even more mystical at night, when the surface of the water reflects the moonlight like a mirror. Daring adventurers can swim in this mysterious lake, but don’t expect to see its bottom. Nobody has ever dived to the bottom.

Siroktabe Island, North Sumatra

This remote island off the coast of Sumatra offers the ultimate survival adventure, with no facilities whatsoever — no homestays, toilet, or kitchen, let alone electricity or communication networks. Adventurers will have to rely on their own wits to find transportation to this island, whether by convincing a fisherman to take them or finding a tour operator (although there are only a couple that will go here). Don’t attempt to canoe your way to this virgin, idyllic island, though. It’s not even on Google Maps. Daredevils can enjoy the whole island and have the vast white stretch of beach for themselves.

Baliem Valley, Papua

The remote location and challenging landscape make a trip to Baliem Valley not only difficult but also very expensive. The flight to the nearest airport alone costs significantly more than flights to any other town in the country, and switching flights will be necessary. Baliem Valley is just an entry point to a whole other world of wonderful, mesmerizing, and largely unknown cultures of Papua. Tourists will have to hire a local guide to get through the dense forests to the villages, where indigenous tribes live.

18 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Indonesia

Written by Casey Hynes and Michael Law Updated Oct 27, 2022

The Indonesian archipelago is a collection of islands that holds untold treasures in its diversity of cultures, landscapes, and cities. With more than 17,000 islands under its jurisdiction, Indonesia offers an adventure and attractions for everyone, from exploring ancient temples and hiking active volcanoes to diving in largely untouched waters.

You can wander the busy streets of Jakarta, or take a step back in time with a visit to the remote villages of Tana Toraja, indulge in the bliss of Bali, or come face to face with the volatile Anak Krakatau.

Whatever you choose, the experience is sure to be one filled with awe and appreciation for a country as steeped in history and natural beauty as this one. Find the best places to visit with our list of the top attractions in Indonesia.

1. Beaches of Bali

2. borobudur, 3. orangutans of borneo, 4. gili islands, 5. komodo national park, 6. sacred monkey forest, ubud, 7. mount bromo, 8. tana toraja, 9. kalimantan, borneo, 10. lake toba, 11. mount krakatau, 12. raja ampat, 13. gunung rinjani, 14. pura tanah lot, 15. banda islands, 16. jatiluwih rice fields, bali, 17. jakarta.

Beach in Bali

Arguably Indonesia's most popular vacation spot, Bali has a number of cultural landmarks and attractions that make a visit here worthwhile.

But, for many people, Bali is about the island's beautiful beaches . If a beach vacation is what you're looking for, you may want to head to one of Bali's luxury beach resorts and spend some time soaking up the sun.

Anyone who travels to Bali is going to have warm sand and blue water on their mind, and the island doesn't disappoint. Kuta is the best known beach, and is great for those who like to combine sun, surfing, and socializing. Because of its popularity, you'll find no shortage of restaurants and things to do here.

If you're looking for something a little quieter and less crowded, Nusa Dua is still a beauty, but draws fewer tourists. Sanur is the place to go for a little more culture, as well as great water sports.

Borobudur

This ancient temple is one of the most famous and culturally significant landmarks in Indonesia. Borobudur was built in the 8th century and constructed in the shape of a traditional Buddhist mandala. It is one of the top UNESCO World Heritage sites , and is considered one of the greatest Buddhist sites in the world.

The massive temple was forgotten for centuries, when it is believed that much of the population moved to eastern Java due to volcanic eruptions. But it was rediscovered in the 1800s and, today, is one of the main draws in Java.

Visit at sunrise for a torch-light climb up the temple and for the breathtaking experience of watching as the complex is bathed in sunlight. Borobudur lies near Yogyakarta , an old Javanese city known for its rich cultural and historical offerings.

Orangutans in Borneo

No trip to Indonesia would be complete without seeing some orangutans, and Borneo is a great place to visit these beautiful and endangered creatures.

Though orangutans still live in the wild, several sanctuaries rescue and protect orangutans as land development infringes on their natural habitat. Tanjung Puting National Park in Kalimantan, the Indonesian-owned part of Borneo, is home to one of the largest orangutan populations in the world, as well as other primates, birds, and reptiles.

If you don't make it to Borneo, you can also see orangutans at the Bohorok Orangutan Centre in Bukit Lawang, a tourism village in the Sumatran jungle.

Gili Islands

The Gili Islands are a major draw in Lombok, which has risen in popularity among backpackers and tourists over the years. These picturesque islands offer beaches that rival those of Bali in their beauty, as well as opportunities for diving and even snorkeling at a turtle sanctuary.

If you're looking for more turtle action, you can check out a turtle hatchery where hundreds of these creatures are born each year.

Kayaking is also popular in the Gilis, and if you're seeking a place to reconnect with your mind and body, you will find several options for yoga classes. The Gili Islands provide a more relaxed, though still stimulating, alternative to popular Bali.

Lombok Map - Tourist Attractions

Who hasn't dreamed of seeing a dragon at least once in their life? The komodos of Indonesia are no mythical creatures, however they are fierce and deadly animals.

Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, encompasses three main islands and a number of smaller ones, as well as the surrounding marine areas. The waters off these islands are some of the richest and most diverse in the world.

The komodo dragons are the stars of the show on any visit to the park, but visitors can also hike, snorkel, go canoeing, or visit small villages on the islands. Another highlight is Pink Beach on Komodo Island. This stretch of pink sand is one of the top beaches in Indonesia .

Visitors must arrive by boat to the islands, and there is an entrance fee plus additional costs for transportation, guide services, and other activities.

Sacred Monkey Forest, Ubud

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali, and it's here you'll find the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, a serene space where you can feel the ancient majesty of the island.

You'll see many long-tailed macaques, a species of monkey commonly seen throughout Southeast Asia. The sanctuary also contains three Balinese Hindu temples, which date back to 1350. As you wander through the forest, avoid displaying any food or holding items (such as umbrellas and water bottles) that may draw the attention of the monkeys. They may try to steal whatever you're carrying!

The forest is near Padangtegal , a small village that has drawn artists of all varieties for many years, and the temple, artistry, and stunning natural backdrop make a trip to the forest and village a must-do in Bali.

Mount Bromo

Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire, an area with some of the most active volcanoes in the world. Many of the country's volcanoes, such as Mount Merapi, are famous for their violent eruptions and their stunning, but dangerous beauty.

Mount Bromo is among the best known, thanks largely to its incredible views, particularly when seen standing over the caldera at sunrise. Bromo's peak was blown off in an eruption, and you can still see white smoke spewing from the mountain.

The volcano is part of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park , which also includes Mount Semeru , the highest peak in Java. The park is home to the Tengger people, an isolated ethnic group who trace their ancestry back to the ancient Majapahit empire.

Tongkonan, traditional homes

A visit to Tana Toraja in South Sulawesi Province will not only feel like you've stepped far back in time, but also offers a look at the richness and diversity of Indonesia's long-standing cultures.

The architectural style of Tongkonan, boat-shaped houses and other buildings, are immediate standouts, but the people are what make this piece of natural paradise so special. They are, by many accounts, the friendliest and most welcoming people you could hope to meet while traveling.

The Toraja approach to death is one of reverence and celebration. Funerals are elaborate ceremonies involving plenty of food and traditional dance, and the dead are buried in graves built into surrounding caves.

Some of the top things to do in the area include visiting villages and connecting with locals, or trekking in the notoriously lush and pristine countryside.

Dayak village on the Kayan River

Few places suggest wild, untamed adventure like Borneo. One of the most ecologically diverse places on earth, Borneo is home to orangutans, exotic birds, Sumatran rhinos, pygmy elephants, and an array of other creatures.

In Kalimantan, in Indonesian Borneo, you can travel down the Kapuas River, the longest in Indonesia; visit villages of the indigenous Dayak people; and observe foreign influences from China, Malaysia, and even Europe in the ports and cities along the way.

You can also go trekking in the rainforest for a chance to see some of Borneo's famed wildlife in person. Bukit Baka-Bukit Raya National Park is a conservation area in West Kalimantan that includes two of the highest mountains in Borneo and supports wildlife such as orangutans, clouded leopards, slow lorises, sun bears, and many other species.

Lake Toba

Another of Indonesia's natural wonders, Lake Toba is both a body of water and super volcano. The lake, which sits in a crater, was formed between 69,000 and 77,000 years ago and is believed to have been the result of a catastrophic eruption.

The lake is 1,145 square kilometers and 450 meters deep. Volcanic activity is still regularly recorded here and has pushed some islands above the water's surface.

Lake Toba is a study in beauty and the powerful forces at work on the planet. Here, you can go swimming, water skiing, canoeing, or fishing, or stick to wandering the surrounding area on foot or bike.

Mount Krakatau

Surely, the eruption of Indonesia's most famous volcano, Krakatau, in 1883 was the largest in recorded history. The eruption severely impacted climate conditions around the world and took a devastating toll on human life on nearby Java and Sumatra. Anak Krakatau, "Child of Krakatau," is the youngest of the islands formed by the 1883 eruption, and forced itself above the surface in 1930.

This young and volatile volcano continues to rise higher out of the sea and have significant eruptions. Anak Krakatau still belches smoke and fire, and tourists can visit Krakatau's child for a reminder of the awesome, unseen power just beneath the surface at every turn in Indonesia.

Raja Ampat

The fairlyland of lush, cone-shaped islands set against blue and turquoise waters is one of Indonesia's most spectacular sights. Hundreds of islands and cays make up this tropical paradise, but the beauty extends beneath the surface as well.

Colorful fish and a diverse variety of marine life thrive in the warm, clear waters. In fact, the coral reefs here are some of the most biodiverse on the planet, making it a popular area for diving in Indonesia.

Gunung Rinjani

Another of Indonesia's famed volcanoes, Gunung Rinjani is a top attraction on Lombok. Rinjani itself does not see the eruptions and activity that some of the others have, but its caldera-forming eruption in the late 13th century is believed to have been one of the most powerful in human history. A lake sits in Rinjani's caldera, and within the lake sits Mt. Baru , another active volcano.

In Rinjani National Park, you may spot animals such as the rare black ebony leaf monkey, long-tailed macaques, the sulfur-crested cockatoo, and other exotic species. Guided treks are available, and you can camp overnight in the park.

The park does caution that treks are strenuous, so if you plan to hike the mountain, you should be in good physical health and be prepared with the appropriate equipment.

Pura Tanah Lot

This is one of Bali's most popular temples, built on a rock formation in the sea. The original formation began to deteriorate at one point, so a portion of the rock is now artificial. Still, Pura Tanah Lot draws people in droves, particularly in time to catch the sunset.

This temple compound is found on the southern coast of Beraban village, and you can walk out to the temple at low tide. Once the sun goes down, browse the stalls at Tanah Lot market to purchase unique Balinese souvenirs.

Banda Islands

Bali and Lombok are tried and true vacation spots for a reason, but the lesser-known Banda Islands have their own appeal as an off-the-beaten path getaway. This cluster of 10 small islands sits at the edge of the Banda Sea, whose depths reach more than 6,500 meters.

The Bandas have long been on the radar of those involved in the spice trade, thanks to their rich source of nutmeg. Called "Eastern Indonesia's best kept secret," the Bandas hold untold thrills for divers and sailors in particular.

Pristine dive sites offer a chance to spot sharks, sea turtles, whales, the endemic Ambon scorpionfish, lobsters, and a plethora of other creatures.

You can book accommodations and tours yourself, or opt for a live-aboard boat, which includes stops at many great dive sites around the islands.

Jatiluwih Rice Fields, Bali

The beaches may be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Bali, but the verdant rice fields are a close second. So lush and life-giving are the terraces of the Jatiluwih Rice Fields that they were designated a UNESCO Cultural Landscape as part of Bali's Subak System .

The meticulously cultivated and irrigated fields are a testament to the wealth of natural resources in Bali, as well as the carefully honed skills of the local farmers. No visit to Bali is complete without seeing these rich acres.

Jakarta at sunset

Indonesia's bustling capital stands in stark contrast to the country's famous beaches , rice fields, and volcanos. Here, tourists can discover the cosmopolitan side to this otherwise very traditional destination.

The city contains more than 170 shopping malls , each brimming with stores, high-end restaurants, and cinemas.

Other highlights of Jakarta include a number of noteworthy museums. The relatively new Museum MACAN showcases more than 800 pieces of contemporary art. There's also the Museum Nasional , an archeological and ethnological institution with more than 70,000 artifacts, and the vibrant Museum Layang-Layang, dedicated to the art of kite-making.

Be sure not to miss Kota, Jakarta's Old Town , to see what this city looked like in the 17th century.

Wae Rebo village, Flores, Indonesia

Between Komodo and Lembata islands is one of the most beautiful spots in all of Indonesia: Flores. The island brims with untouched stretches of lush, tropical scenery. The most famous attraction on Flores is the Kelimutu volcano. It's best-known for its three lakes, each of which boasts a distinctive color that changes based on the acidity of the water.

You can also visit Stone Age megaliths in the village of Bena, and see traditional conical houses, known as Mbaru Niang, in Wae Rebo .

21 MUST-SEE Beautiful Places in Indonesia (2024 • Insider Guide)

With more than seventeen thousand volcanic islands spread across seven seas (literally), Indonesia is a land blessed with long sandy beaches, rain forests, waterfalls, and untouched coral reefs. It’s also home to a multicultural population, from the world-famous Hindu island of Bali to the Buddhist temples of Java.

With all that beauty considered, Indonesia is a massive country with an endless array of islands and archipelagos worth exploring. How on earth does one choose just a few places to visit when presented with tens of thousands of options?

The answer isn’t simple, but this article sure can make it easier to choose where to visit in this expansive archipelago.

With this list of twenty-two of the most beautiful places in Indonesia , you can curate your own bucket list shortlist and plan the PERFECT Indonesian itinerary. You’re welcome!

1. Besakih Temple, Bali

2. ubud, bali, 3. wae rebo village, flores, 4. mentawai islands regency, 5. kelimutu lakes, nusa tenggara timur, 6. the gili islands, lombok, 7. raja ampat islands, west papua, 8. bangka belitung islands, sumatra, 9. komodo national park, nuse tenggara timur, 10. tana toraja, south sulawesi, 11. tanjung puting national park, kalimantan, borneo, 12. borobudur temple, java, 13. mount bromo, east java, 14. derawan islands, east kalimantan, 15. maluk beach, sumbawa, 16. lake toba, north sumatra, 17. baluran national park, east java, 18. saraswati temple, bali, 19. uluwatu, bali, 20. yogyakarta, java, 21. alas purwo national park, east java, how to see beautiful places in indonesia, final thoughts on beautiful places in indonesia.

One of the oldest (and largest) Hindu temples in Indonesia, the history of the Besakih Temple dates back to megalithic times, when the original structure was built around a central holy rock. It’s not known as The Mother Temple of Bali for no reason.

Like many temples, this one is shrouded in history and mystical legend. I won’t even try to begin to explain its origins and evolution – you’ll simply have to visit to learn more. But what I can tell you is that this temple is one of the most beautiful places in Indonesia.

Besakih Temple

As you walk towards the steep stairs of the temple, you’ll be overwhelmed by the scent of tropical greenery and the sounds of buzzing bugs and birds. It’s located on the side of Mount Agung, the iconic volcano that towers over the island. With its fertile volcanic soil, the temple is naturally surrounded by never-ending jungles of lush plants and grasses.

Whatever your faith (or lack thereof), visiting this temple is a spiritual experience for all who visit. I’m telling you, there is something otherworldly about this location. No wonder it’s still an important place of worship for the Balinese Hindu community.

If you’re backpacking in Bali , hitting up Ubud is a must, it’s like an unwritten law, I guess! Located in the center of Bali, this place really captures the heart and soul of this peaceful island.

rice-fields in Ubud, Bali, indonesia

The small yet busy town is surrounded by tropical jungles and terraced rice fields. You could spend weeks exploring the stunning rice terraces (the Tegalalang Rice Terrace is no doubt the most famous), swinging over the valleys on some of the famous Ubud swings, and visiting iconic temples in the area.

Ubud is the cultural capital of Bali, overflowing with art galleries, small boutiques, and traditional marketplaces. Other than culture and history, this is also where you will find some of the most impressive waterfalls on the island . Sure, they might be more crowded here than up north, but this doesn’t make them any less spectacular.

Visit the Ubud Monkey Forest for a really unusual experience. This small forest park is teeming with cheeky monkeys. Just make sure to hold onto your hats and phones, as these monkeys are known to have a thing for stealing!

For a change of pace, join a yoga class or wellness retreat in Ubud. Take it from me: you’ll leave with a new understanding of the word “zen.”

Nestled in the misty mountains of the Island of Flores, Wae Rebo is a traditional village that has earned itself a spot on the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage list . This destination is exceptionally secluded, adding an adventurous touch to your Indonesian backpacking journey .

Home to the Manggarai tribe, this tiny village is surrounded by a dense tropical Todo forest packed with orchids, plant life, singing birds, and other endemic animals.

The most defining characteristic of the village is the unique houses, called Mbaru Niang, which are covered in thatch from the roof to the ground. Every house has five levels, each for a separate purpose – cooking, socializing, sacred gatherings, and sleeping. Today, it’s the only village in the country that maintains these traditional Manggarai houses .

Mbaru Niang in a large valley surrounded by mountains in Wae Rebo Village, Flores

A single ancestor named Empu Maro founded the village over 100 years ago, with some of the current residents being 18th-generation descendants. Basically, this means the Manggarai tribe have kids super early. Do the math!

love to feel like I’m visiting an island where people actually live,  stay with locals , and actually immerse myself in their culture.

One of my favorite things, and in my opinion, what makes this one of the most unique places to visit in Indonesia, is the lack of phone reception and limited electricity (only available between 6 pm and 10 pm). This gives you a real opportunity to switch off and reconnect with yourself and the surrounding nature.

The Mentawai Islands are bestknown to surfers around the world. Isolated and off the beaten track doesn’t even begin to describe this string of islands.

It can be a hack to get here, which makes it super uncrowded and all the more beautiful in return. First, you’ll have to fly to Padang on the island of Sumatra (likely via Jakarta) and then get a ferry into the islands. You might even need to catch a small local long boat to get to certain islands in this beautiful place in Indonesia. It’s all part of the journey.

Famous with surfers across the world, the islands are suitable for anyone on the hunt for crystal clear water, soft white sand, a slow pace of life, and all-around good vibes. First order of business: Secure the perfect surfboard , then ride the waves.

A man surfing in nusa lembongan

The Mentawai Islands aren’t the best spot for solo travelers , though, since there isn’t much socializing to be done around the islands. However, if you’re traveling in a group or with family, add the Ments – as we call them – to your list.

Surfing isn’t the only activity on the islands. You can also trek through the inner island jungles, snorkel, dive, and learn about the local island culture. The underwater scenery certainly offers the most in these parts, with some of the most spectacular dive sites in the world.

Kelimutu Lakes might just be some of the most dramatic-looking volcanic lakes in the world. They are also some of the most visited lakes in the country , and rightfully so.

What you might not know is that Kelimutu Lakes are actually a collective name given to three different crater lakes created by the same volcano. Each of the three lakes is a different color – blue, white, and red.

The most spectacular (and, of course, most photographed) is the blue lake, which shimmers an incredible turquoise that is hard to put into words.

Skyline views of Kelimutu Lakes in Nusa Tenggara Timur

The best way to experience this place in all its natural beauty is to hike or trek to the summit . Sunsets and sunrises here are unreal, and I really advise you to try to plan your trip to avoid the midday heat. Unfortunately, swimming is not allowed in the toxic sulphuric water (not to mention the steep cliffs). Otherwise, a cool-off dip would have been ideal.

The lakes’ colors and intensity change by the minute, so manage your expectations. That said, when it comes to beautiful places in Indonesia, the lakes really are in a league of their own.

If you’re mapping out your Lombok itinerary , you’ve got to know about the Gili Islands. A string of islands located just off the west coast of Lombok and just a short ferry ride from Bali, the three main islands are called Gili Trawangan (Gili T, for short), Gili Meno, and Gili Air.

Gili T is the largest island, although calling it large would be an overstatement. All three islands are small enough to walk around on foot and have no car traffic, meaning the best way to get around is by walking or cycling. And oh boy, do we love an island with no traffic!

Sky view of Gili Islands with boats lining on the coastline and lush trees

The islands are known for three main things: snorkeling and diving, the beaches, and the nightlife. The nightlife is best in Gili T, where just about every street corner is buzzing with activity.

Learning to dive or snorkel over the reefs are the two most common activities. Take that snorkeling boat trip , and you’ll see just why Gili Island’s underwater world is just incredible!

If you’re up for even more water-related adventures , there are plenty of places where you can rent a SUP, go on kayaking day trip tours, kite surf, or wakeboard. Basically, you’re going to want to bring as little clothing and as many bathing suits as possible on this trip…

A quick Google search of these islands will have you gawking at your screen. Seriously, it’s impossible to put this incredible tropical island into words. That said, I’ll give it the best I can…

Set in a secluded part of the archipelago, Raja Ampat is one of Indonesia’s premier diving destinations in the Coral Triangle . The triangle stretches from the Phillippines to Malaysia and Indo, but there are few places within it that can compete with the beauty of Raja Ampat.

Rock formations in Raja Ampat Islands, West Papua

It’s true that the islands are the best for diving and snorkeling. But the thing is, these islands are just as beautiful above the surface as the coral reefs beneath them.

The island of Kri is the most popular for tourists, with plenty of accommodation and dive center options. However, if you have the cash to spare, do yourself a favor and book a boat charter for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

A dream come true for island-hoppers, bird watchers, and general fans of exquisite views and vistas, Raja Ampat is as remote as it is beautiful – and let’s be honest, the two are directly related.

tbbteam-gear-MSR-Hubba-tent

Here at The Broke Backpacker , we love freedom! And there’s no freedom as sweet (and CHEAP) as camping around the world.

We’ve been camping on our adventures for over 10 years, so take it from us: the MSR HUBBA HUBBA is the best damn tent for adventuring…

While you might have heard of the island chains mentioned above, chances are the Bangka Belitung Islands are new to you. This province of islands located off the coast of southeastern Sumatra includes two main islands, surrounded by smaller ones.

They fall slightly off the beaten track and, thankfully, off the radar of many tourists, purely because of their remoteness and distance to get there. Admin aside, the islands are considered one of the most beautiful places in Indonesia for their unique granite boulders and palm tree-lined beaches. Sign us up!

Bangka Belitung Islands' coastline with boats lining at the shore

Tanjung Tinggi Beach offers the perfect combination of white sand, smooth boulders, and crystal-clear water. For a slice of history, make sure to visit the Museum Kata Andrea Hirata , a colorful museum that represents the journey of literature and learning in the region.

On the island of Belitung, the Danau Kaolin Belitung Lake was formed by mining activity in the area. Today, water from the bright blue, turquoise lake is used to produce paper, cosmetics, and even food.

It’s an interesting place to learn about the local industries, and it doesn’t hurt that it doubles as one of the most uniquely beautiful places in the country.

Likely already high on your list of places to visit in Indonesia, Komodo National Park is truly deserving of a place on this list. Comprised of a string of three exotic islands, each island is preserved and protected for these magnificent dragons to thrive.

In an otherworldly landscape of dry bushes, rugged cliffs, and barren rocks, roam the mighty Komodo Dragons. Where else in the world can you see totally wild prehistoric creatures that have their own entire region to roam free?

A hilltop view from Komodo National Park, Nuse Tenggara Timur

And let me tell you, these massive lizards aren’t the only interesting thing about the islands. The three islands, named Komodo, Padar, and Rinca, each have beautiful views, beaches, lush coastal hills, and, of course, are ringed by a thriving and colorful coral reef system.

Once you’ve had your taste of Jurassic Park, head to the famous Pink Sand Beach on Komodo Island to experience an entirely different side of the islands. The pink hue of the sand comes from microscopic red organisms that live in the coral reefs.

After they die, they get washed up on the beach and turn the sand pink. Neat, right?! While it isn’t the only pink beach in the country, these beaches are typically super rare.

Taking a step away from the tropical beaches and islands, Tana Toraja is one of the most unique places to visit in Indonesia for a few reasons.

First of all, the region set in the highlands of South Sulawesi offers a majestic mountain backdrop surrounded by lush jungles and picture-perfect local villages.

Famous for its incredible hiking trails , Tana Toraja is as popular with nature enthusiasts as it is with activity devotees. Begin your day by watching the sun rise over the misty hills as you explore the villages and mountainside. What a dream!

People standing in a traditional building made of rocks in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi

Second, the area is also known for its mystical tribal funeral customs . In an uncommon practice, the dead are not considered truly dead (in modern medical terms). Here, the departed are considered to be sick, or makula, as they say.

The makula – sick (or dead, as a doctor would say), are placed in a sealed coffin inside the family home until the family has saved up enough money for a decent funeral procession. Funerals depend on the social status of a family, with the most wealthy funerals including hundreds of animal sacrifices.

You can visit the Londa Burial Caves for an eerily beautiful and educational experience. Suitable for fans of anthropology and beautiful places. Not suitable for the easily creeped out…

A boat floating down a river in Tanjung Puting National Park, Kalimantan, Borneo

Ever wanted to see an orangutan in the wild? Tanjung Puting National Park contains the largest population of wild orangutans in the world.

Naturally, the park is spread across a dense jungle and swamps on the island of Borneo. Among the orangutans, there are endless other fauna and floral species thriving in the jungle.

It looks exactly like a normal belt  except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

Borobudur Temple, Java

Welcome to the largest Buddhist temple in the world. Sitting among the likes of Angkor Wat and Bagan in Myanmar, this exceptional temple is considered one of the most ancient archeological sites in Indonesia.

Sitting on a majestic hill overlooking the island below, no wonder this is one of the top ten places to visit in Indonesia.

Mount Bromo Indonesia

One of the best volcanoes in Indonesia , Mount Bromo is an active somma volcano that forms part of the Tengger Mountains (a series of other volcanoes).

It’s one of the most famous volcanoes in the world because of its otherworldly landscape. And by this, I mean some of the most quintessential volcanic imagery you could dream up. Watching the sunrise from the top of Mount Bromo is not to be missed when visiting East Java. Sign up for the tour below and live the ultimate experience.

A group of boats floating on the blue water next to the shore with palm trees in Derawan Islands, East Kalimantan

The Derawan Islands comprise 31 islands surrounded by coral reefs and islets that form part of the Coral Triangle . They are famous for their biodiversity of coral, invertebrates, and protected marine species, including the giant clam, coconut crab, and sea turtles.

Maluk Beach, Sumbawa

Maluk Beach is as beautiful as beaches get. Picture yourself sinking into the soft white sand, strolling along a palm tree-lined beach, and taking dips in the pale blue water. It’s one of the most beautiful beaches for snorkeling, relaxing, and even surfing (when Neptune allows).

Lake Toba surrounded by green mountains in North Sumatra

Once the site of the largest volcanic eruption on the planet, some 74 thousand years back, Lake Toba is now a beautiful lake that could give Lake Como a run for its money.

Surrounded by panoramic views, beaches, waterfalls, and hot springs, there are plenty of places to explore and adventure around this peaceful Sumatran lake.

If you squint your eyes, you might think the Baluran National Park was a game reserve in the African Sahara. The area has a dry climate that consists mostly of savanna.

Add to that white sand beaches, a coral reef of dreams, and more animals than you can imagine, and we have ourselves one of the most unique places to visit in Indonesia.

Saraswati Temple, Bali

Dedicated to honoring the Hindu Goddess of learning, literature, and art, Saraswati Temple is a beautiful place to visit in the sacred village of Ubud.

The beautiful temple is surrounded by a water garden of ponds dotted with blossoming water lilies. Decorated with fine carvings and etchings, it only makes sense that the temple is dedicated to art.

Man surfing at balangan uluwatu

Uluwatu is a small village set on the cliffside of the Bukit Peninsula in Bali. At the far south of the island, the area is known for its world-class surfing waves, warungs hanging on the edge of the cliffs, and incredible beaches and coves. Not to mention the sunsets and nightlife!

Yogyakarta, Java

Culture fans, this one is for you. Yogyakarta is the only Indonesian city still ruled by a monarchy. The royal city is known as the center for Javanese fine arts and culture, including things like poetry, music, literature, and fine art.

A pathway through a lush forest in Alas Purwo National Park, East Java

A national park made up of savanna, mangrove swamps, caves, monsoon jungles, and coral-fringed beaches, Alas Purwo National Park is just what we signed up for. Not to mention, it’s also home to a famous surf break.

As you can imagine, Indonesia’s transport options consist of lots and lots of boats. Ferries, local transport boats, and speed boats – there are endless ways to travel across the seas from island to island. A ferry from Lombok to Gili Trawangan takes around half an hour and costs between $10 and $20 in each direction.

Man on moped in Lombok

When it comes to traveling long distances from region to region, flying is usually the best option. It’s much quicker and often inexpensive when traveling on budget airlines like Lion Air, Citilink, and Garuda Indonesia . A flight from Bali to Jakarta would cost you around $30 – $35 in one direction and take under two hours. Easy-peasy.

When on a local island like Bali or Lombok, the best way to get around is to rent a scooter (although controversially not the safest). That said, it’s super cheap (less than $5 per day to rent), and people do drive super slowly. Renting a car is another great option if you’re traveling in a group.

Beautiful travels stay that way insured

The first thing that most locals say is “hello;” the last thing that they say is usually “be careful.” Indonesia is a safe destination , but accidents do happen all the time, especially in Bali. Whether it’s a scooter accident, complications from diving, or a case of Bali belly, there are lots of ways that your trip can be derailed.

Traveling without insurance would be risky, so do consider getting good backpacker insurance sorted before you head off on an adventure.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

And that brings us to the end of our list of beautiful places in Indonesia. Truthfully, I could have continued writing about this country for pages, but hopefully you’ve got your eyes set on a few of these exquisite places for your next trip.

From moss-clad temples to gushing waterfalls to some of the trippiest coral reefs on the planet, there really is an incredible amount of places to visit and things to do in Indonesia. Cutting this list down would be an impossible task; however, if I had to recommend you visit only one of these places, it would be the Raja Ampat Islands.

Less popular than the Gili’s, this tropical paradise is a haven for wildlife – both on land and underwater, and is easily one of the most striking places I’ve had the honor of visiting.

25 Things to do in Indonesia + Tourist Spots

Even thinking about adventures that await in over 18,307 islands already makes me want to go aboard the next flight to Indonesia.

You can skip “eat” and “pray,” and go straight to “love” in Bali.

If you’re tired of beaches, there are ancient temples, volcanoes, waterfalls, and nature parks waiting for you in 18,306 more islands.

Inspire your adventure in Indonesia with these must-visit places and top things to do for first-time travelers.

1. Nusa Penida

Location : Nusapenida, Klungkung Regency, Bali, Indonesia . Save on Google Maps .

If you are in Bali and you want to go off-beat, go to Nusa Penida. This island and neighboring Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan islands are so close to Bali yet remain vastly untouristic. The highlights here are jaw-dropping cliffed coastlines surrounded by pristine waters. You can go on a day cruise from Bali. Better yet, spend a night or two in one of many amazing tree houses on Nusa Penida.

How to go :

Nusa Penida is one hour away from mainland Bali by ferry. You can catch a ferry from Sanur Beach in Denpasar & Padang Bai in East Bali. From the ferry landing in Nusa Penida, the best beaches can be reached on a day tour around the island.

Each Island has a completely unique feel to the next, but that’s part of the charm. It’s good to be choosy in this incredible country. One thing is for certain you will want to come back again and again.

The fact is that the best places in Indonesia can not be seen in a single trip or even two or three for that matter.

Togean Islands

Indonesia has mile after mile of picture-perfect palm-fringed stretches of sand for you to sink your toes into, but the Togean Islands in Sulawesi are just that little bit more special. The Togean Islands take the first spot on my list of best places in Indonesia because I loved every minute of the two weeks I was there.

The interior of the islands is filled with dense wildlife-rich tropical jungles that add to that sense that you have reached paradise.  Trekking from one isolated beach to the next is simply soul-charging. Perhaps you want to try and climb a volcano or snorkel over pristine reefs in crystal clear waters? Whatever you are looking for in your tropical adventure the Togian Islands have you covered.

Boat, coral, clear sea

The Bajau Sea Gipsies Of The Togean Islands

The indigenous Bajau Sea Gipsies are warm and welcoming. Their Vibrant and timeless culture only adds to the appeal of the place. Their stilted communities are dotted all around the archipelago. It is easy to arrange a tour to visit one of the many villages with your guest house. To find out more about this fragile culture and its future check out this post by Al Jazeera

Where To Stay On The Torgian Islands

I Stayed at Kadidiri Paradise Resort on Pulau Kadidiri. I can honestly say that this place lives up to its name and some. Go and live your wildest tropical dreams in this beautiful island chain now.

Tanjung Puting National Park

Orangutang, Baby, Mother

Across the whole of Indonesia, there are 52 national parks and the country boasts a whopping 17% of the whole planet’s species. Needless to say, in answering the best places in Indonesia question I have to include some national parks. It is just hard to choose which ones stand out.

After some consideration, I think Tanjung Puting in Kalimantan is one of those. Taking a slow boat up the winding rivers to reach Camp Leaky is enthralling in the extreme.

People come to see our red-haired cousins the orangutans in the wild but you are sure to see so much more.

The park is home to a wide diversity of Bornean wildlife. To find out what you can expect check out this post by the Orangutan International Foundation .

Spending your days spotting and spotting wildlife and then Sleeping in your boat listening to nothing but the sounds of the rainforest is simply magical. The park is a mission to reach but your experience is so worth it.

Getting to Tanjung Puting National Park

Due to Tanjung Puting’s remote location, the only way to visit the park is on an organized tour. You can go through a tour agency or just mosey on down to the jetty and barter.

In the busy season ( June Until August) your bargaining room is very limited indeed.

The Nearest Airport is in Pangkalan Bun and tourists usually fly from Jakarta and leave right after as it’s a very long way to anything. However, those who put in the effort to explore Kalimantan will not be disappointed. Borneo is amazing!

Tours to the park can be done in as little as two hours one way but why would you want to? It is best done over 3 days in a much slower local boat.

gary mason, volcano, mount bromo

Mount Bromo

When Mount Bromo is not blowing its lid the scenery around the crater is some of the finest in the world. The fiery mountain sits in a desolate creator surrounded by a vast sea of ash. Contradictly you will view said mountain from a green and fertile plateau.

Get up early in the early morning for those dreamy mists and for a view, you will never forget. Mount Bromo is most definitely one of the best places in Indonesia to visit for just about anyone.

As You can see I caught the mountain on a bad day during a tantrum. If you look at the top of this post you can see what you get normally.

Of all the volcanoes in the world, this one is surely the most beautiful. The perfect cone is actually only one of three active volcanos in the area but it is by far the most vocal. It is pretty much always at least spewing out plumes of smoke. That coupled with the stunning setting makes Mount Bromo a photographer’s paradise.

Where Will Your Journey Take You?

Getting To Mount Bromo

The nearest transport hub is Probolinggo in East Java. It is a busy and hectic town with lots of dodgy characters hanging around the transport hubs. Please be careful with who you trust here and if it’s possible try and remember these people are simply very poor and trying to earn a buck.

There is a minibus station just outside the main Bus station. Ask the staff for directions. They run until 4 pm when they are full so you may have to wait. It is best to arrive by bus as it’s an easy walk. The train station is miles away. If you decide to get a taxi all the way to Bromo expect to pay 500,000 INR at the absalute minimum.

Where To Stay Around Mount Bromo

No accommodation in the area is especially good value but who cares when you are not there to sit in a hotel? Most tourists stay in the village of Cemoro Lawang as it is right in front of the volcano and still at a safe distance.

I stayed in the Bromo Otix Guest House and it was not so expensive compared to its neighbours and perfectly comfortable. Book way ahead in the busy season as it can get very crowded indeed around the area.

Komodo National Park

Komodo Dragon, Giant,

The sun-baked islands of Komodo and Rinka are home to giants. It is a land where you can catch a glimpse of what the world must have looked like when dinosaurs roamed the land. The Komodo Dragon is both beautiful and intimidating at the same time.

Growing to more than 3m in length and weighing more than 150kg it can feel intimidating to come to the conclusion that take away our tools we are not at the top of the food chain.

If Giant lizards weren’t enough there are plenty of other species to feast your eyes on in this national park. What’s more the underwater life here is world-class and all tours will include a chance for you to blow some bubbles with the fishes

All in Komodo and Rinca has to be one of the best places in Indonesia to Visit for any traveller here.

Getting To Komodo And Rinca Islands

There are plenty of liveaboard options from Lombok or Bali and maybe you want that. Bear in mind they are very expensive especially if you are a solo traveller. If money is no problem it is a fantastic option as you have the flexibility to stop wherever you want along the way.

For the rest of us, it is best to start in Labuan Bajo is Flores. The competition for your money is fierce although I recommend checking the boat out before committing to anything.  Some are far from sea worthy but they will try anyway.

Where To Stay On Komodo And Rinka Islands

There are a limited number of guesthouses on these islands and a truckload of tourists in the peak season. You can surely do the math. It pays to book way in advance.

If you decide to sleep here you would be wise to book way in advance. Try the Komodo Guesthouse near the harbour. ( tel 0812 3956 6140) There is no visible website I have found. If you plan on staying in Labuan Bajo why not check out this post about the 10 best hotels in the area?

Along with Bagan in Myanmar and Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Borobudur is considered one of the greatest archaeological wonders left by the ancient world in southeast Asia.

Although much smaller than the first two listed Borobudur is well worth the time to get here. It is somehow both elegant and imposing at the same time.

You don’t even need a vague interest in history to be blown away by this magnificent structure and be able to appreciate it in all its glory. Of course, if you do appreciate the ancient world, Borobudur is sure to leave you breathless.

Getting to Borobudur

Most people visit Borobudur on an organised tour from nearby Yogyakarta. Aside from the spectacular ancient ruins, Borobudur is a small village. Yogyakarta is a stylish city with a fantastic tourist infrastructure that is a tourist magnet, so why not if you are pressed for time?

However, Here is the downside. As I mentioned earlier Borobudur is one of the great archaeological treasures to be found in Southeast Asia and it is very much discovered. That can be frustrating especially if you enjoy photography for obvious reasons

That means it can get quite crowded if you turn up with the rest of the tours. Don’t get me wrong, the chances of you getting the place all to yourself outside of the height of the monsoon is very slim indeed.

Where To Stay In Borobudur

However, it’s reasonable to assume you will have the opportunity out of hours for a little quiet. Also, Borobudur is surrounded by picture-perfect villages and they are ripe for walks around the countryside.

If this sounds like something you want to experience why not check out the Rumah Boedi’s residence? You can do a lot worse than this stylish boutique hotel in its well-tended beautiful garden.

The Baliem Valley

As the most accessible part of Papua’s remote interior, The Baliem Valley understandably sees considerable tourist numbers considering what it takes to visit. The reputation of being one of the best places in Indonesia truly proceeds it.

Even though the modern world has crept into the valley since it was first discovered in 1938. stone tools have been replaced with mobile phones but nonetheless, traditions run deep. Whatever happens the  Baliem Valley is sure to be a world away from wherever it is you have come from.

The valley is populated by small communities of the Dani people. You will find them welcoming and their culture is completely unique. The best way to explore the valley is on a multiday organized trek. These treks are both gruelling and eye-opening to the point of euphoria at the same time.

Tours In The Baliem Valley

There are a lot of opportunities to find a guide to this part of the island. However, all guides are not created equally and since it’s quite a sizable financial commitment it pays to shop around.

If you don’t have a guide you can always simply turn up at Wamena’s tiny airport. You are sure to be greeted by a truckload of freelance guides eager to take you into the hills.

On the other hand, if they were good guides it is unlikely they would hover around the arrivals lounge trawling for tourists. Some may be amazing but you are running a risk. Just saying.

On yet another hand they tend to be way way more affordable than tours from your home country. If you have some cash to burn then check out The Baliem Valley Resort . This outfit might have cost a pretty penny but they seem to get amazing reviews.

This sort of tour will eradicate too much thinking and you will get to see a lot in a small amount of time.

If you do plan on freestyling your journey I would strongly recommend putting some real thought into planning what you want to see in as much detail as possible.

Tana Taraja

The Tana Taraja is most definitely one of the best places in Indonesia and quite possibly in all of Asia. The Timeless customs and stunning landscapes will blow your mind. I came for a few days and stayed for two weeks. What’s more, I am planning my next trip back.

best travel places in indonesia

Most people come to the whimsical corner of the universe between June and August when the local people practice their funerals .

They are quite the sight and not for the faint-hearted, They include a lot of animal sacrifice and it can be intense to watch even if you have mild feelings towards animals.

But there is a lot more than funeral ceremonies here. Treks from one timeless village to another through rolling rice paddies will bring something special to your itinerary.

The incredible long houses that punctuate the landscapes add something special you just cannot get elsewhere. Despite the fact that Sulawesi is moving head-first into the future the culture and customs of the Tana Taraja hold strong.

You will need a guide to get the most out of your time here. Many tourists simply hire a motorbike and ride around the stunning countryside.

Of course, there are benefits in freedom of movement there but the chances of you stumbling across one of the extraordinary ceremonies many have come to see. Without a guide, you will be wandering into someone else’s funeral essentially and understandably that can be super awkward.

How To Reach The Tana Taraja

Considering that the Tana Taraja is genuinely one of the best places in Indonesia to visit and the whole area lies way up in the mountains it is surprisingly easy to access. Well, from the South anyway.

There are several very comfortable bus services from Makassar every day. Some flights run from Makkasar daily for those of us on a real-time schedule.

However, if you are heading North it is not the same story in any way. There are sporadic bus services that are very slow and you will lose days from your precious visa sitting in the back of a bus. If you can it is much better to hire a private taxi that will hopefully be less likely to break down and will run on time.

Merabu is a place that not many people would recommend as it’s so far off the normal tourist radar, but that is most definitely part of the charm. Situated deep in the rainforests of Borneo few tourists make it this far.

Merabu is another of the very best places in Indonesia that few people know about. I loved my time here and it is real easy to lose track of time.

There are endless opportunities to trek in the hills or meander down the chocolate-coloured waters in a canoe.

The Friendly Dayak Lebo villagers once had to fight for their rainforest they love so much. Today, the people are happy to welcome you into their homes. It is a chance to glimpse into a way of life virtually unchanged for centuries.

These impenetrable forests harbour a vast array of wildlife, but wow, you have to work to find it. The Area is not a national park it is simply a stretch of virgin rainforest you will often have to carve a path through.

Visiting Merabu is a challenging adventure but worth every bit of effort and sure to leave memories that will last a lifetime.

Where To Stay In Merabu

There are no hotels anywhere near Merabu. It is a homestay job. It is a very well set up project where each house gets a turn with tourists and they all have the chance to make some money.

It is best to arrange your stay in advance. Contact Yervina at +6281345939332 to arrange your bed. She is in control of this thoughtful project.

How to get to Merabu

There is absolutely no public transport to Merabu village so you will need to organize private transportation. Taxis are happy to make the journey but it will cost you. It is best to ask Yarvina (phone number above) To arrange transportation for you.

From Berau it will cost about 1,500,000 INR. Heading South to the town of Sangatta will cost you about 2,000,000 INR. However, ending your journey here will be of little value as now you have to wait for very sporadic transportation. A long taxi journey all the way to Samarinda set me back at 3,200,000. If I had to do it again I would despite the high cost.

Mentawai Islands

best travel places in indonesia

The Mentawai Islands are a tiny archipelago off the coast of Sumatra that is fringed by stunning beaches and is most definitely one of the best places in Indonesia.

The Mentawai Islands are famous for awesome tubes. Check out this link by Perfect Wave for an in-depth look at where and when is best.

However, there is so much more here than just world-class tubes. Some of the islands particularly Siberut is home to a Tattoo-Covered tribe of hunter-gatherers.

The tribes of the  Mentawai Islands are completely unique. The Best way to visit them is with a Mentawai Ecotourism project .

If stunning beaches, surfing and tribes were not reason enough to visit the lush interior is also bursting with wildlife.

What’s more, many species found on the Mantawai Islands are found here and nowhere else on Earth including an impressive 17 species of mammal.

There are plenty of reasons to make the Mentawai islands part of the itinerary. You decide which is your favourite. Better yet why not enjoy it all? One thing you can bet on is that the Mentawai Islands are one best places to see in Indonesia period.

best travel places in indonesia

Where to stay on the Mentawai Islands

Almost everyone who is planning to trek will turn up on an all-inclusive package lasting somewhere between 2 and 6 days. You can turn up and find a guide but I am not sure it will be cheaper and there is no way to check reviews. So that opens the door to possible pain and disappointment.

There are quite a few expensive surf retreats dotted around the islands and again they are all-inclusive. It makes sense they are expensive as every last bottle of water has to be shipped from the mainland.

But when the costs are often in $ and not in INR plus most come with a minimum stay you know it is going to set you back a pretty penny. However, the surf here is world-class and known among surf enthusiasts everywhere. Check out good old booking.com as I have found some good deals on there to be fair.

Getting To The Mentawai Islands

All boats to the Mentawai Islands leave from the city of Padang or from the Teluk Kabung port 30km south of Padang. Mentawai Fast is a company with a port right slap bang in the city centre and that makes for a stress-free transfer.

Ambu Ambu and Gambolo are two more ferries that ply these routes. They lack the convenience of Mentawai fast as reaching them involves a leanthy and costly journey to reach them.

Best Places to Visit in Indonesia

Tanah Lot is a one of the best places to visit in Indonesia

  • 1.70K views
  • ~ mins read

Indonesia is a truly vast country. With an archipelago of some 18,000 islands, a diverse mix of cultures and everything from mouth-watering cuisine  and booming cities to historic temples and prime beaches , this Southeast Asian nation attracts tourists from around the world. However, Indonesia is so much more than miles upon miles of sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters (though that's certainly enticement enough!) Here are some of the best places to visit in Indonesia, in no particular order.

  • Reece Harrison-strati
  • From England

1. Tanah Lot, Bali

The gorgeous Tanah Lot temple (pictured above) is not only a spectacular place to visit in Indonesia but exploring this site is a top thing to do in Bali as well. One of Bali 's seven oceanside Hindu temples, Tanah Lot is possibly the most well-known. Rumour has it that the temple, which was built in the 16th century and sits in the middle of the ocean, is guarded by sea snakes. You can approach Tanah Lot on foot during low tide, however, non-Balinese visitors cannot actually enter the temple. Instead, you can only view it from the outside.

Tip: Drop by around sunset for some truly incredible views.

Entrance cost: 60,000 IDR per person (USD 4.20)

2. Komodo National Park, Komodo Island

It's not exactly the type of dragon you see in Game of Thrones , but the Komodo Dragons are certainly something to fear. Reaching up to 3 metres (10 feet) in length and weighing up to 70 kilos, these massive reptiles tackle their prey with their sharp claws and poisonous saliva - and they roam freely on Indonesia's Komodo Island! Don't worry though - experienced tour guides feed the dragons every morning so they don't prey on the island's visitors.

Opening hours: Every day from 7 am to 5 pm

Entrance costs: 150,000 IDR (11 USD) per person

3. Jakarta, Java

The capital of Indonesia, Jakarta is a truly bustling city, home to an incredible nine million people. It's busy, it's frenetic, and the traffic can be crazy — but it's still truly worth the visit. Jakarta is a great place to visit in Indonesia for some delicious traditional food and is home to the country's hottest nightlife scene (particularly in Jalan Jaksa with its many traveller bars). Spend your afternoons shopping in the city's many malls, or strolling through the Dutch-settled Kota Tua old town.

4. Raja Ampat, West Papua

Is there anywhere in the world more beautiful than Raja Ampat? We think you'd be hard-pressed to find it. This beautiful area is an archipelago of its own, with more than 1,500 small islands that are just perfect for snorkelling and diving. Below the water's surface, you'll find a rainbow of colour with 530 species of coral and the highest recorded marine life diversity on Earth. If you love diving, this is certainly one of the best places in Indonesia for you.

Tip: The best way to reach Raja Ampat is via ferry from Sorong Harbor to Waisai.

5. Pontianak, Borneo

If you're looking for a taste of traditional Indonesian culture, Pontianak should certainly be on your list. Sitting at the top of the Kapuas River, one of the longest river in the world, this capital city of the West Kalimantan province is home to the country's indigenous Dayak people. Visit one of the nearby villages to meet the elders, who often wear large earrings and heavy tattoos and who are dedicated to rituals and traditional medicine. Spend the night in a traditional longhouse before setting off down the river. Don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for orangutans and freshwater dolphins nearby.

Komodo Island is one of the best places to visit in Indonesia

6. Bukit Lawang, North Sumatra

This is one of the best places to visit in Indonesia for orangutan spotting. Bukit Lawang is a charming, rustic retreat nestled deep in the Northern Sumatran jungles. This is a great place to connect with nature, as there is little else here than some riverside teahouses and bamboo longhouses. Popular among ecotourists and backpackers, Bukit Lawang is ideal for relaxing and a little bit of jungle exploring. Keep your eyes peeled for baboons, Thomas leaf monkeys, and even the endangered Sumatran tiger.

7. Yogyakarta, Java

Less crowded and busy than Jakarta, Yogyakarta is another city on the island of Java that is one of the best places in Indonesia to experience the country's more modern side. Foodies will absolutely love this city, which is said to be the country's culinary hub. You can also explore the city's many craft markets (be sure to visit the puppet makers) and soak up its artistic, cultural atmosphere.

Tip: Be sure to also take the time to discover the city's historical side, including the palace-turned-museum Kraton.

Check out more interesting tours in Yogyakarta that will guarantee all of the above!

8. Lombok and the Gili Islands

If you see the appeal of Bali but aren't interested in crowds of tourists, Lombok is a great alternative. Once a relatively unknown island, Lombok is quickly catching up to neighboring Bali in terms of popularity but hasn't quite reached the same level of commercialism. For a real treat, sail just off the island's northwest coast to the Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan, Meo and Air — for some snorkelling and a taste of tropical paradise.

9. Tana Toraja, Southern Sulawesi

Tana Toraja, or Torajaland, is one of the best places to visit in Indonesia for those who want to get to know the rich culture of the Toraja people. Here in the highlands, the Toraja tribe have built their homes from wood and reeds — looking more like a ship than any house you've ever seen. You'll also be able to see the tribe's peculiar burial sites, where the deceased are often buried years after their actual death.

Tip: Visit during the dry season (May to September) if you're particularly keen to see one of these funeral ceremonies for yourself.

Bukit Lawang is one of the best places to visit in Indonesia

10. Dieng Plaleau, Java

Wanting to cool off from the fierce Indonesian heat? The Dieng Plaleau is one of the coolest places in the country (temperature wise, but it's pretty interesting too) as it can be found some 2,000 m above sea level. This caldera was formed following the eruption of the Prau mountain and is a great place to visit for anyone who's ever wanted to see a multicolored lake. There are also some hot springs you can soak in and some ancient Hindu temples well worth exploring.

Tip: It’s a long drive from Jakarta (about 10 hours), but there are a few accommodation options including small local hotels and homestays.

11. Bandung, Java

Bandung is Indonesia's second largest city but is quite unlike the capital city of Jakarta. Sometimes called the "Paris of Java", Bandung is full of charm. When visiting Bandung, you absolutely must try some of the local cuisines, like steamed basko tahu in peanut sauce. You can also indulge in some great shopping, with a mix of cheap batik fabrics at the traditional markets and high-end shopping at the outlet shops.

12. Borobudur, Java

Become totally lost in Indonesia's Buddhist history with a visit to Borobudur, world's largest Buddhist temple. With ancient Buddhist stories carved into rocks, towering pagodas and wonderfully detailed murals, there's even a touch of Hindu influence in the architecture here. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is sure to take your breath away. Visit during sunrise for a truly spectacular view.

Opening hours: Every day from 6 am to 5 pm

If you are a history and culture buff then check out more cultural tours in Indonesia .

13. Sacred Monkey Forest, Ubud, Bali

While monkeys are often considered to be a nuisance in Bali (mostly because they are known to eat farmers' crops and even pickpocket unsuspecting travelers), this is certainly not true in this sacred park in Ubud , Bali. The Sacred Monkey Forest is home to about 500 monkeys who roam the area freely, running across the paths among visitors. Inside the forest, you'll also find a Pura Dalem, a temple of the dead, that likely dates back to the mid-13th century.

Opening hours: Every day from 8 am to 6 pm

Entrance costs:  80,000 IDR (USD 6) for adults and 60,000 IDR (USD 4.18) for children.

Tip: The monkeys can be quite cheeky, so be sure you follow the rules and advice at the visitor center.

Visiting the Sacred Monkey Forest is a top thing to do in Bali

As you can see, there is so much more to see in Indonesia than just beaches and sunshine. Whether you're looking for nature, history or modernity, every traveler to this beautiful and diverse country is sure to find something that suits their tastes.
