It’s amazing how kids can fall asleep anywhere. I must admit, I’m a bit jealous of how much Z time they get. In the car, on an airplane, waiting at the doctor’s….my kids 0-can nap like no other. So, we’ve researched some of the best pillows out there to help our little guys get uninterrupted rest. We can’t just take a normal bed pillow with us wherever we go, of course, so finding something compact that supports the head and neck properly is the goal. Fortunately for you, we’ve tested out and researched the most popular travel pillows for children on the market. Below are the top 7 choices, and why they might be great for your family. Why it’s great: They had me at memory foam! But would my child like it? The answer is, yes! Of course, the cute koala design and matching carrying case and eye mask certainly reeled my kiddo in. With a squeeze of your hand, you can see why this material is top notch—the company boasts 5-second bounce back technology to alleviate pressure on unwanted areas. There are several kid-friendly designs to choose from. I suggest having your child help pick out a design, and then he/she will be that much more excited to use it on the next family outing.

Keep in mind: Since this is memory foam, it will be a little more firm and form fitting than its cotton counterparts.

4. SSAWcasa Seatbelt Pillow

(most compact — $).

Why it’s great: A simple trip to the grocery store or an across-town visit to Grandma’s….it’s always the same. My child will fall asleep on the ride. In the booster seat (and previously, car seat), I attach the SSAWcasa pillow to give my kiddo some neck and head support. The soft padding provides for a comfortable rest. Because it attaches to the seat belt, it doesn’t fall out of place like other pillows sometimes can. It’s easy to clean (you know how kids can be!) and not at all bulky. This is an especially good option for car rides. Actually, I keep this tucked into the back seat pocket, as we end up using it frequently. It’s even a good idea to get one for both cars so that you never go without it unexpectedly. Your child will sleep much more peacefully with a travel pillow like SSAWcasa by his side.

Why it’s great: Airplanes and bus rides can be uncomfortable even for us well-traveled adults. Kudos to those kids who have to put up with it, too! I try to provide simple comforts for my kiddo for such times, and when I found the Maliton Inflatable Foot Rest Pillow, I knew we had a long-distance winner. Simply fill the space between two seats, extending the seat length so that your toddler can lay flat (or at least straighten his/her legs). It’s very lightweight—less than a pound—and is easily carried in the provided drawstring bag. You don’t need an airpump for this, either. It only takes about a minute to blow it up yourself. The Maliton is surprisingly comfortable…I have to admit using it in the airport to put up my feet during a long layover. Don’t worry; my son was running off energy in the airport playland (a parenting lifesaver!). I might just have to buy an extra one for myself, though, as I’m starting to get spoiled by this awesome invention. Just one word of advice: never forget to take it on a trip, because after one time of having your little one use it, you’ll know what you’re missing!

Keep in mind: Some airlines don’t have a lot of leg space, so the pillow doesn’t always fit between the seats as intended. Checking ahead will save the hassle.

In short, you don't need a separate infant car seat and a stroller, because this is both.

"It's the easiest stroller to maneuver through airport security and around an airport terminal," says one tester who's a mom of two young kids. It goes into a rideshare vehicle using the seat belt (no stroller to put in the trunk!). But if you'll travel a lot in those first two years — even if it's just catching Ubers around town — you'll be grateful for the Doona.

Big kids need a bit of help ensuring that the seatbelt is hitting their body just right, so this backless booster gives them that extra height. It's also exceptionally small, lightweight and easy to travel with; you might even keep several in your car's trunk for when you're carpooling other kids.

Because it's backless, it doesn't offer as much support as a highback booster (for that, see the Peg Perego on this list). It is okayed for ages 4 and up as long as they weigh at least 40 pounds and could be great for a quick trip when you don't want to lug something large. This fits into a tote bag!

With its two hideaway cupholders, machine-washable seat cushions and padded armrests, this tucks a lot of features into a (really!) affordable seat. While it isn't airline-approved — all booster seats require a shoulder belt, which you won't find on an airplane — its compact size makes it incredibly simple to slide into your overhead bin to later use in taxis, Ubers or other vehicles once you get to your destination.

For a little more money there's a TurboBooster LX version that works with LATCH; nice if you'll be keeping this in one car for a length of time.

Got enough to carry already? At 10 pounds, this is the best lightweight convertible car seat for traveling and it won't break the bank. Five harness heights and three buckle locations help customize the seat to your baby or toddler's size, though it's the kind of harness you have to rethread each time you need to change it.

The Scenera can be installed rear-facing for babies and toddlers and forward-facing for preschoolers up to 40 pounds but lacks the cushioning and other comforts, like a recline mechanism, we've come to enjoy in an everyday toddler car seat . Still, with its deep bucket seat, this will keep your tiny passenger comfy enough and car seat compliant when you're traveling and in and out of other people's vehicles. It's especially great as a rear-facing travel option for 2- and 3-year-olds who have outgrown an infant car seat.

You can remove both the cupholder and seat pad for washing. The seat pad can even go in the dryer. The brand claims that three of these seats fit across a back seat and our tests were able to validate that in certain vehicles. It can be installed with the LATCH system or a seatbelt. It's approved for airplane seats and like our best overall pick it fits on most economy seats.

Kids who are at least age 4 and who weigh 40 pounds or more will appreciate the comfort of this belt-positioning booster seat just as much as parents will appreciate its ability to fold down to a fraction of its size.

The Flex 120 has an exceptionally large weight range, functioning for kids up to — you guessed it — 120 pounds. While it's a bit pricier than some other booster options, its ability to compact down makes it perfect for folding up and storing in a bag that you can then gate-check, or even fit into the overhead bin while in-flight. Its versatility means that it may be the only car seat you ever have to buy, and if you travel infrequently, you could manage to tote this on a few trips and avoid buying something separate just for travel. It is certified to work on an airplane seat with the harness (so, up to 65 pounds), but it's about 3 inches wider than many economy airplane seats so the fit isn't great; one Reddit user said they put it in the window seat and then just accepted squeezing themselves into the middle-seat position.

While testing, we appreciated how easy this car seat was to install and use, making it pretty difficult to mess up due to user error. We also love how highly adjustable it is, with a six-position recline and a no-rethread harness with 10 possible heights. The easy-to-remove washable seat pads make it simple to clean up after your little one. If you're taking it with you into a rideshare and can't use the LATCH installation system, there's an integrated belt lock off on the back of the seat that helps make seat belt installation as simple as possible.

WAYB Pico Travel Car Seat

This is a pricey option that has a fan following with frequent travelers who travel with a preschooler. It folds down into its own carrying case, which can be worn as a backpack, so you can easily get it through the airport and store it in a hotel. It's got a five-point harness and is meant for kids up to 50 pounds. The brand says it's for kids as young as 2 but because rear-facing is safest and this only faces forward, we would not recommend using it for a child until they are at least age 3, preferably 4.

The Pico does not have side-impact protection and other safety features we want on an everyday car seat, but for travel we agree that this has portability appeal. It also gets knocked in reviews for not being comfortable for long car rides if your child likes to nap, but again, we're putting it on this list for on-the-go families who are in "something is better than nothing" mode, even for short train, bus or van rides.

Our experts appreciate how lightweight this seat is (8 pounds), and that it easily fits even on the smallest economy airplane seat (it's FAA-approved). The seat can either be installed using the LATCH system or the seatbelt in a car or airplane.

Nuna PIPA urbn + TRVL Stroller

If you're a city family that doesn't even own a car, there's a big reason to love the PIPA portable infant car seat: It's built to be installed without a base and is exceptionally easy to move between vehicles, including rideshares like Uber.

It's got a built-in rigid LATCH system or alternatively you can use the back seat seatbelt. Plus, the PIPA urbn only weighs 7 pounds, making it one of the lightest infant car seats we know of and an easy one to carry from place to place. The stroller, too, is lightweight at just under 14 pounds and can be folded down using just one hand. The car seat is built to ride on top of the stroller, to get them both through an airport, and we named it our favorite lightweight travel system .

The infant car seat does not have a high weight limit, however. Your baby will outgrow it when they hit 22 pounds or are 29 inches tall, whichever comes first. For some that can mean by their first birthday. But the stroller will stay useful through the preschool years since it has a weight limit of 50 pounds. The car seat is airline-approved and will fit on most economy cabin seats.

How we test the best portable car seats

The Good Housekeeping Institute's engineering and parenting pros have reviewed dozens of car seats over the past five years, including portable car seats . Our Lab experts work with parents to test these car seats on a variety of vehicles of different brands and sizes to ensure that you can find the right car seat for your family.

Each car seat we consider has passed Federal Safety Standards. We perform tests both in the Lab and at home to evaluate each product's safety, ease of installation, stability, ease of adjustments, stroller compatibility and portability. To accomplish this, we set up each car seat in a variety of vehicles and strollers. We evaluate how easy it is to secure the harness as well as how difficult it is to install the car seats. For portable car seats we pay special attention to whether they can be installed without a LATCH system and if they are approved for use in an airplane cabin.

What to look for when shopping for a portable car seat

Whether you're going on a trip or often take your child places in a rideshare vehicle, if you need a portable car seat you should consider these things:

✔️ Height and weight limits : All car seats come with minimum and maximum height and weight specifications. To ensure proper seatbelt placement and optimal security, make sure your child fits within those ranges. Once they meet the maximum in either height or weight, it's time to switch. If you have an adjustable car seat that transitions to a booster look at the labels on the car seat, check the user manual or contact the manufacturer so you know when it's time to switch modes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can help you determine the right kind of car seat for your child based on their age, weight and height. That will help you figure out if you can use an infant car seat or if you need a convertible car seat and if you're ready to move on to a booster car seat for travel.

✔️ Weight : The lightest car seats are often the most portable. We get especially excited when we find any that are less than 15 pounds, though a few on our list are heavier than that.

✔️ Easy cleaning : Regardless of age, spills happen. Luckily, like many other car seats, most portable seats offer removable machine-washable seat covers and padding.

✔️ Design : Traditional car seats have a ton of padding, robust side-impact protection and extra features that are important for every day but might be overkill for short trips. The best design for a portable car seat is a slim, streamlined one.

✔️ Ease of installation : Since you will be re-installing the car seat each time you put it in a new car or aircraft, it's important to find a car seat that is so easy to install it won't take more than a few minutes. The easiest car seats for traveling can be installed without a car seat base.

✔️ State laws : Before you bring your car seat across state lines, check state laws to be sure you'll be compliant. Often children through age 7 must be in a child-restraint seat. But if you're heading to Florida for Disney World, the laws there only apply to children through age 5.

Should you bring a car seat on the plane?

While it is not mandatory to strap your little one into a car seat on an airplane, many parents opt to do so since it can be both a safer and more comfortable for everyone . It's recommended to do so for children under age 2 by the FAA and AAP. Note: For your child to ride in a car seat, you'll need to buy them their own plane ticket so they're guaranteed to have the space. If your baby under age 2 is flying as a free "lap baby" you are not guaranteed space for your car seat.

Before you bring a car seat onboard, check that it has an FAA-approved sticker. It's also a good idea to bring along your car seat manual to help ensure that you're properly installing the seat on the aircraft. Watch some before your trip!

The average airline seat is about 17 inches wide and measures 30 inches from the back of the seat to the seat in front of you — but size can vary depending on which airline you are flying. Because of this, it's best to pick a narrow, compact car seat. Infant car seats fit better than most convertible car seats, though we find that the Cosco choice on our list generally fits well.

For those who are traveling with a car seat who don't plan to use it while on the plane, many airlines will check the car seat or booster seat for free at the check-in desk or at the gate. It might be a good idea to purchase a travel bag to fit it in, to help avoid damage.

WellSense : As a WellSense NH MassHealth ACO or MCO member, you may qualify for additional benefits. Car seats play an important part in keeping children safe while riding in a vehicle. Each child member between 5-65 lbs. can receive an infant seat once per lifetime, and children between the ages of 4-8 years old are eligible for a booster seat to replace the infant seat, once requested. Pregnant mothers can request a car seat 45 days prior to their due date. Traveling with Babies: How to Fly With A Pack and Play

Whether this is your first time flying with a baby or your tenth, preparing for air travel with your kids is a lot of work and can be stressful. The packing, prep, and travel time can be overwhelming for first-time and experienced parents! From the first time a baby comes home, you need somewhere for them to sleep safely, and as they get older, a spot for them to play without getting into trouble. When traveling with my three young kids, I purchased small suitcases adorned with their favorite Disney characters, with wheels and a handle for my toddlers. The Basics of Rotating Car Seats

Rotating car seats spin on their base, making it much easier for parents to get their babies and toddlers in and out of the car . These car seats are convertible and suitable for children through the late toddler stage. The way they work is that the base remains stable and immobile, while the seat itself has a slightly bowl-shaped bottom that runs on a track, allowing it to rotate either 180 or 360 degrees. You secure the base into your car’s latch system, and the seat attaches to the base, clicking in at the back with a slide-like mechanism that keeps it steady in either the forward- or rear-facing position.

I understand that many people are concerned that the connection between the seat and the base may not be as strong as with traditional car seats, but that’s simply not true. These seats pass the same rigorous safety tests in the U.S. and often in Europe, as well. You might have seen the viral video of an empty Evenflo Revolve coming off its base during a collision , but that happened because it wasn’t installed properly. This can happen with any car seat, which is why it's critical to install it correctly, follow all usage instructions, and maintain it according to the manufacturer's directions.

Most major brands have a rotating car seat, and some like Cybex, have more than one. But I’m only including the best on this list—car seats that I have tested personally or have had a trusted tester use and comment on. (Though even in those cases, I’ve seen and operated them myself.)

What You Need to Know Before You Buy

These car seats are undeniably creative, helpful, and convenient. Anyone who has ever tried to put a baby in a car seat when the baby decides to "plank" like a surfboard can understand why these would be a great asset. As someone with a partially paralyzed left hand, I can tell you that the accessibility of these car seats is worth the price of admission on its own. But that’s not to say they’re perfect. There are a few issues that might make these car seats less suitable for your family. First, they take up a lot of space. They’re never going to be a model that you can fit three across, like something from Clek. In fact, they make the middle seat of a bench virtually unusable unless the person in the section is quite small and gets out before the baby is secured, and in after the baby is locked in place.

Another sticking point for many families is that these seats can be hard to fit in some cars, especially when the front or middle-row seat is close to the row where the seat is installed. For example, my sister-in-law tested the Baby Jogger , and when my very tall brother was driving, the car seat clipped the corner of the front seat during turns. This doesn’t affect safety, but it could start to damage the corner of the car seat over time.

These car seats also have lower weight and height limits in rear-facing mode compared to traditional car seats. For some parents, that’s an automatic dealbreaker.

And yes, rotating car seats are more expensive than standard, fixed-position ones. There’s no getting around that. Even though I wish that weren’t the case, it is. Most rotating car seats cost over $500, though two on this list fall below that threshold.

What to Consider

As with any car seat purchase, there are a few major things that you need to prioritize when shopping: the size of the seat, the height and weight limits, how you care for or clean it, and the style of the leveling indicator. In most car seat reviews, I research the harness type. However, with these, they all have five-point, no-rethread harnesses.

• Size of the seat: Does it fit in your car? With these car seats, I tell parents to look at the dimensions, and add a few inches in every direction except the side nearest the door to see if it fits in your space. That top part really does jut out, and it can clip your seat or not fit in the space.
• Height and weight limits: Pay close attention to these, especially if your kids are on the taller or heavier side.
• How to clean it: Is the cover machine-washable or spot-clean-only? Is the base easy to clean? Kids are wonderful, gross little humans, and spills and puke can sometimes happen on the road.
• Leveling indicator: This is a crucial function for rotating car seats. This is the indicator that tells you whether or not the seat is safe and ready for driving. Some are bead indicators, while others like the Nuna, do not have one at all. Instead, it’s a permanent connection.

How We Tested

Each of these seats has been rigorously tested, either by me personally or by a trusted tester. We installed them in various sizes and makes of cars, tested them with children of different ages and sizes, cleaned the fabrics and bases, and scrubbed the mechanisms. They truly went through the wringer. We’re talking juice spills, car-sick kids, and even a few diaper blowouts. (Two of the seats were tested during the height of norovirus season, so you can imagine the intense cleaning that followed.) All the seats on this list feature enhanced safety measures, such as the anti-rebound mechanism in the Cybex Sirona S 360 and the SnugLock technology in the Graco, which help parents achieve a secure and easy installation.

Chicco Fit360 ClearTex Rotating Convertible Car Seat

There is not a rotating car seat out there that can beat the utility, convenience, and safety of this car seat at this price point. It's new on the market, and when I tell you that I was blown away, I mean it. I've tested dozens upon dozens of car seats over the years, and Chicco is always a favorite. But, they've really outdone themselves with this one.

The Chicco Fit 360 is one of the best rotating car seats for many reasons. First, testers commented how easy it is to install. It is a belt-path install, which means it slides in behind the seat through easy-to-find paths and locks in place with a sort of plate mechanism that holds everything exactly where it should.

It has an easy-to-latch tether system right behind the head of the seat, which is also completely adjustable and a cinch to install. The multi-position recline, no-rethread harness, and easy-to-read leveling indicator are major pluses when it comes to safety. And when you combine all of that with the high-density foam, steel-reinforced frame, and adjustable newborn padding, this seat is straight-up off the charts.

What Our Tester Loved As far as the ride? The breathable material eliminates swamp back, and keeps baby comfy for hours. The material is also completely machine washable and dryer safe. There's nothing you can throw at this that it can't take.

I've tested it personally and loved it. We had an additional tester use it, and both of us were just gobsmacked by the ease of use, comfort, and overall quality of this rotating car seat. It's also one of the best-priced seats in this genre!

What Our Tester Didn't Love This is a heavier car seat. And, if you want an extra base, it'll cost you. It's certainly not the heaviest on this list, and it's not that heavy when it's not on the base, but if you're moving the whole set, you're going to feel it.

Maxi-Cosi Emme 360 All-In-One Rotating Convertible Car Seat

This is one of my favorite rotating car seats. It accommodates your kid all the way up to the age when they’ll need a traditional seatbelt booster seat. You can’t rotate it anymore at that point, but the added value is pretty wonderful, especially considering this is a $450 product.

What Our Tester Didn’t Love It’s really heavy, so lugging the box wasn’t fun. Also, the adjustability does take a bit of futzing to get right; though after you learn, it becomes second nature.

Our tester couldn’t stop raving about this seat . It feels like a tank. It’s made with top-shelf everything. And, you can operate the spinning mechanism even when you’re holding another baby and your car keys.

You are certainly paying for it at $650. The fabrics would have to be quality, and the Revv has to feel like a tank at that price. With most Nuna products, every cent is worth it. This car seat has a 10-position harness and headrest, an easy-to-adjust fit strap, and ample cushions. The seat doesn’t require a leveling indicator because as soon as it stops in rear- or forward-facing position, it locks.

The initial install is a bit trickier than others, but once the seat is in, it’s grounded and stable. Like others on this list, the Revv is flame-retardant. But unlike some others, it’s still very breathable because of its merino wool.

What Our Tester Loved Our tester felt that Revv was top-quality. He loved that the Nuna has these little magnetic buckle holders that keep them out of the way when you’re putting baby into the seat. To overwhelmed parents, the feature is a big deal.

What Our Tester Didn’t Love Nuna purports that the install is simple and straightforward, but the latch buckles are not the easiest to open, and the initial setup can be a bit tricky.

I also found it to feel a bit bulky, taking up a lot of space in the backseat. The turning mechanism, however, is one-handed and the smoothest on the market.

What Our Tester Loved It’s cool! Plus, the sliding turn is smooth and easy, and the whole thing is very stable. Our tester particularly loved how close your child gets to you in this seat. She tested it when she was pregnant, so this provided maximum convenience.

What Our Tester Didn’t Love First of all, even though the straps seem to be magic, the fabrics are not when it comes to cleaning. You can only spot-clean them, which isn’t ideal for many parents. The seat is also really big with a large amount of clearance required to fit.

Ukraine war latest: Vladimir Putin 'has made decision' on responding to Kursk invasion

Vladimir Putin has "made a decision" and there will be "severe punishment" following Ukraine's incursion into Russia, according to the Russian ambassador to the US. Elsewhere, Russia has been forced to suspend a ferry service to Crimea following a Ukrainian attack.

Here is a reminder of today's key events:

• India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Volodymyr Zelenskyy to sit down for talks with Russia to end the war as the two leaders met in Kyiv;
• Russia accused Ukraine of trying to attack a nuclear power plant in an overnight drone attack;
• The Wagner mercenary group has become "increasingly fragmented" in the year since its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin and founder Dmitry Utkin were killed in a plane crash, according to the UK Ministry of Defence;
• Germany is investigating suspected drone espionage after drones were flown over several industrial sites;
• Ukrainian forces claimed they have recaptured nearly two square kilometres of territory in the northeastern Kharkiv region;
• Russian snipers killed four prisoners at a penal colony who seized prison guards as hostages and declared allegiance to the Islamic State - all hostages were freed, local media reports said;
• Moscow suspended a ferry service operating between its southern territory and Crimea following a Ukrainian attack.

Russia has reportedly reinforced troops in its push for the key Ukrainian strategic hub of Pokrovsk in the eastern Donetsk region.

Although Moscow has been redeploying troops from other regions in Ukraine back to Russia in order to head off a Ukrainian incursion, it has not redeployed troops from its offensive towards the city but has instead reinforced them, according to The Economist.

Russian forces have been pushing towards the key strategic hub for months.

Capturing the city would compromise Kyiv's defensive abilities and supply routes, and bring Russia closer to its stated aim of controlling the entire Donetsk region.

Earlier, our military analyst Sean Bell answered a reader's question on whether there is a response to come from Russia over the Kursk invasion - and he said Moscow might focus on its offensive towards Pokrovsk.

We brought you reports earlier that prisoners at a Russian penal colony had taken prison staff hostage and killed one person. 

Local news outlets now say snipers from Russia's national guard have killed the four hostage-takers.

The National Guard Service said the inmates were "neutralised" and all hostages freed, the reports said, though the number of hostages was not specified.

Before the inmates were shot, state news agency TASS said four victims were taken to a local hospital, with two of them in serious condition.

Unconfirmed reports on the Telegram messaging app said one or two people had died.

A video filmed by the attackers showed four uniformed officials lying in pools of blood - three of them motionless. Another was sitting upright in a doorway with a knife held to his neck.

One man shouted that they were Islamic State militants and had seized control of the prison in the Volgograd region.

Other videos showed four men pacing about a prison yard where a bloodied prison staff member was being held hostage.

One of the prisoners appeared to have an improvised explosive vest while the others were carrying knives and hammers.

Russian media said the four suspects were citizens of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and three were in jail for drug offences and the fourth for unpremeditated murder.

The United States has added 105 Russian and Chinese firms to a trade restriction list for allegedly supporting the Russian military, ramping up pressure on Moscow's war efforts in Ukraine.

The 63 Russian and 42 Chinese companies, along with 18 from other countries, were targeted for several reasons, from sending US electronics to Russian military-related parties to producing thousands of Shahed-136 drones for Moscow to use in Ukraine.

Being added to the entity list means US suppliers will have to apply for a hard-to-get licence if they want to ship to the targeted companies.

Many of the firms were also given a special designation forcing overseas suppliers to get the same US licences before shipping to the targeted companies.

Russia has accused Ukraine of trying to attack a nuclear power plant in an overnight drone attack.

It is the second time Moscow has made such allegations in two days.

The nuclear plant is located in the Kursk region in western Russia, where fighting has raged since Kyiv's forces launched an incursion into Russian territory.

The Ukrainian defence ministry is yet to comment on the Russian allegation.

Meanwhile the Russian defence ministry said its air defence units had shot down three Ukrainian drones in the region overnight. 

It said it had thwarted Kyiv's attempt to carry out "a terrorist attack" against Russian facilities.

Russian state news agency TASS reported a drone had been shot down near a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel at the Kursk power plant.

TASS quoted Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova as saying it was an "act of nuclear terrorism" requiring an immediate response from the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The head of the IAEA Rafael Grossi is due to visit the power plant next week and has appealed for maximum restraint in order to avoid a nuclear accident.

The Wagner mercenary group has become "increasingly fragmented" in the year since its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin and founder Dmitry Utkin were killed in a plane crash, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.

"In comparison to its peak personnel count of around 50,000 in 2023, Wagner now highly likely maintains around 5,000 total personnel across its residual deployments in Belarus and Africa," the MoD said in its latest update.

Prigozhin and Utkin were among 10 killed when their plane crashed north of Moscow one year ago today under mysterious circumstances.

It came two months to the day after the Wagner boss led a short-lived mutiny against Russia's military top brass, mounting the most serious challenge against Vladimir Putin since he came to power in 1999.

The Wagner group was formed of ex-convicts and mercenaries and played a key role on the battlefield in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

It has also been active in conflicts in Syria, the Central African Republic, Sudan and Libya.

The MoD also shared a map of the latest battlefield situation in eastern Ukraine:

Germany is investigating suspected drone espionage after drones were flown over several industrial sites.

Yesterday prosecutors said they had opened an investigation into repeated drone flights over critical infrastructure in northern Germany which they said were suspected of spying for sabotage purposes.

The German military's Territorial Command said it had complied with a police request to provide radar data on the suspicious drone flights.

German chemicals group Covestro and Swiss cement maker Holcim are among a group of chemical, energy and logistics companies that have operations in the ChemCoast Park industrial area in Brunsbuttel, in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein.

Yesterday German newspaper Bild cited state criminal police saying the drones were likely to have been Russian Orlan-10s, which have a range of 500-600km (310-372 miles) and can fly at over 62mph (100kph).

Germany has been one of Ukraine's biggest suppliers of military aid since Russia invaded in 2022 and has been on increased alert over sabotage activity.

Narendra Modi has urged Volodymyr Zelenskyy to sit down for talks with Russia to end the war.

The Indian prime minister told the Ukrainian president he would act as a "friend" to help bring peace, as the two leaders met in Kyiv.

Mr Modi said he had come to the Ukrainian capital with a message of peace.

"The road to resolution can only be found through dialogue and diplomacy, and we should move in that direction without wasting any time. Both sides should sit together to find a way out of this crisis," Mr Modi said.

"I want to assure you that India is ready to play an active role in any efforts towards peace. If I can play any role in this personally, I will do that. I want to assure you as a friend."

Mr Modi said India had not been neutral or a bystander during the conflict and was always on the side of peace.

New Delhi has so far avoided condemning Russia's invasion and Mr Zelenskyy previously criticised Mr Modi for his visit to Moscow in July, chiding him for hugging Vladimir Putin during their meeting.

Should the fact that there has been no direct response from Putin militarily regarding the Ukraine incursion into Russia signal a larger more catastrophic response to come from Russia? Or is this just "how they're playing it"?

Military analyst Sean Bell  answers:

When Ukraine first launched its audacious incursion into Russian territory over a fortnight ago, some commentators were concerned that the attack would provoke a swift and ruthless response from Vladimir Putin.  However, over a fortnight into Ukraine's military operation, it now appears that Russia has struggled to develop a coherent response, and Ukraine maintains the initiative.

The Ukrainian operation appears to have been well planned, and Ukraine has capitalised on its initial success by reinforcing its forces and pushing deeper into Russia.  Although Ukraine has not declared the objectives of this dynamic operation, it appears that Volodymyr Zelenskyy  was seeking to seize the initiative, bolster Ukrainian morale, and provoke a military response from Russia that would relieve pressure on an embattled Ukrainian frontline in the Donbas.   

Mr Putin was clearly frustrated at the Ukrainian incursion, but a ruthless Russian military response was only one option. Ukraine is short of military capability - soldiers and weapons - and it appears that they have deployed up to 10,000 soldiers (probably battle-hardened) into Russian territory. This "fixes" these Ukrainian forces well away from the frontline Russian action in the Donbas. 

Mr Putin knows that progress on the frontline will slow when winter arrives, so his forces have perhaps 10 to 12 weeks remaining to achieve the objectives of his so-called Special Military Operation. By focusing on Russian main effort in the Donbas, Mr Putin knows that Ukraine has diluted the forces available to resist the Russian assault towards Pokrovsk, which might enable greater progress in the limited time available.   

Once Russia's objectives in the Donbas have been achieved, Mr Putin might consider that he can address the Kursk incursion in slower time.
