200km From Jammu, A Bowl-Shaped Valley, Bhaderwah Is Known As Little Kashmir, And Rightly So!

Photo of Bhaderwah by Sonalika Debnath

For 200 kilometres, the road from Jammu to Bhaderwah, slips, slithers and snakes through some of India's most jaw-dropping terrains. Forested slopes and decrepit tuck shops pass by in an ivy green blur, and the reticent river, Neeru, glistens away into the horizon. And after five languorous hours and 40 odd minutes, the bowl-shaped valley of Bhaderwah comes into view.

Sitting on the foothills of the middle Himalayas, the town sits at a lofty 5,295ft and has been monikered very aptly as Chhota Kashmir (mini Kashmir). The deodar forests are deep and shrouded in silence, and its meadows are swathed with fuchsia rhododendrons. There's history, rife with both local legends and political fervour. But what will cause you to lose your heart in mere seconds to the once sleepy valley, is its snow-dusted mountains. Perpetually shimmering under the winter sun, they beckon travellers from across the world, making it near impossible to leave.

Tucked away in Jammu and Kahmir's Doda district, Bhaderwah owes its bounteous beauty to the few hundred unchristened rivers clinging precariously to the mountainsides, alpine valleys dotted with centuries-old temples and elfin chai shops, and snow-capped peaks completely devoid of any worldly traps.

Vasuki Nag Temple Vasak Dhera

A paragon of architecture, this temple houses twin idols of Raja Jamute Vahan and Naagraj Vasuki, carved out of a single stone. These time-worn statues inclined at 87 degrees, date back to the 11th century. The temple is three kilometres away from Bhaderwah's city centre and thronged by pilgrims all year round.

Gupt Ganga Temple

Devoted to Lord Shiva, this shrine is believed to be the resting place of the Pandavas , of the Mahabharata fame, during their days of exile. Engraved with Bhim's footprint, one of the rocks found on the premises is locally worshipped and draws religious tourists and curious travellers in equal measure. Sitting on the banks of river Neeru, this temple is constructed entirely out of stone. Its peculiar name is derived from a local legend, that river Ganga fell on the Shiva lingam and thereafter, disappeared abruptly.

Chandi Mata Temple

Chandi Mata is another local favourite. The Hindu shrine is awash with garish colours and worships Goddess Chandi. Perched at 10,000ft above the Machail village, the octagonal temple is a pit stop for the illustrious pilgrimage trail of Machail Yatra.

For a motley of meadows, peaks and valleys

Chinta Valley

At an elevation of 6,500ft, the sylvan valley is laden with conifers. One can go horse-riding from the regions of Baggan to Thuba and later visit the archaic Shiva temple nearby. The Subarnag peak trek starts from the Bhadarwah-Chinta road, and the valley also offers plenty of skiing opportunities.

Seoj Meadow

A canvas of serenity – the grasslands of Seoj are encompassed by dizzying mountains that are home to the sacred peak of Kailash Kund on the south and a choppy rivulet on the west. Locally known as Seoj Dhar, the meadow acts as the camping grounds for the Kailash Yatra pilgrims. While here, adventure enthusiasts should book a thrilling paragliding trip that will take them across the ridiculously beautiful terrains of Bhaderwah.

At 10,500ft, it's the highest point on the Bhadarwah-Chamba road. Pack a picnic lunch and clamber aboard one of the interstate buses to Padri. Carpeted by wildflowers and grass, it's teeming with pilgrims in the month of July, when the Mani-Mahesh Yatra begins.

Sartingal Road

On the southern end of Bhaderwah, lies the heavenly hamlet of Sartingal. Neighboured by deodar forests, and the hills of Kailash and Ashapati, its landscape is etched with unsung streams and kahwah stalls.

Cuisine on offer

At Bhaderwah, the cuisine comprises of some beloved favourites such as the aromatic rogan josh and quite possibly the best rajma chawal in the world. As you sip on the alleviating kahwah , keep an eye out for yakhni (a heavenly lamb curry cooked with yoghurt), mawal flowers and mint, matschgand (a fiery meatball curry), and modur pulav (rice spiced with saffron, cinnamon and milk). Other than that, go about street eateries and restaurants, sampling the traditional dishes of goshtaba , aab gosht , muji gaad and dum olav in and around Bhaderwah.

October marks the onset of winters in the region and up to February, Bhaderwah and the surrounding state is at its most spectacular. The climate during these months is perfect for sightseeing tours and adventure sports. In December, temperatures tend to go as low 4ºC, so be sure to pack plenty of woollens if you're travelling during this period.

Nature's spectacle: J-K's Bhaderwah rare wild flower bloom delights tourists

Bhaderwah's high-altitude slopes and grasslands are adorned in white and purple as foxglove flowers bloom, drawing tourists' attention..

The abundant growth of wild flowers, also known as Foxglove, has turned out to be a major attraction for the visitors flocking to this picturesque valley in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district to beat the summer heat in the plains of the country. The high-altitude slopes and vast grasslands of Bhaderwah are once again painted in white and purple colours with bell-shaped Digitalis Purpurea or Foxglove flowers in full bloom, attracting the attention of local and foreign tourists visiting the valley.

Foxglove is a delicate and fragrant bell-shaped flower that looks like wind chimes in pink and white. It presents a rare view to the visitors. (Pixabay)

A native of temperate Europe, Foxglove is a delicate and fragrant bell-shaped flower that looks like wind chimes in pink and white. It presents a rare view to the visitors. Nestled in the snow-filled Ashapati and Kailash glaciers, Bhaderwah is witnessing a massive rush of tourists, many of whom are seeing the wildly grown beds of bell-shaped flowers for the first time and can be seen clicking pictures to make their trip memorable.

"This is beyond my our expectations…We have come here to enjoy the pleasant weather, refreshing waterbodies and the vast meadows surrounded with dense coniferous forests, but the beauty of Foxglove spread everywhere has taken us to the fairytale world,"Akriti Mittal, a tourist from Shamli in Uttar Pradesh, told PTI.

The 31-year-old said she is an avid traveller but has seen these types of flowers for the first time. Both locals and visitors are of the opinion that proper projection of the Foxglove can become a trump card to attract flower lovers from across the world. "I came to Jaie meadow for a family outing to be in the lap of nature. After seeing these flowers on the slopes, in the meadows and lined on the edges of the road, as if these are not wild but grown with a purpose, I realised why they say that this place is heaven on earth," Aarif Haleem Khateeb (45), a resident of Jammu, said.

Bhaderwah, the 'valley of flowers', is known as mini-Kashmir for its resemblance with the 'paradise on earth'. "If projected in a better way by the tourism authorities, this wild species of flower can further boost tourism prospects of Jammu and Kashmir in general and the region in particular," Khateeb said. Tribal nomads, who traditionally reside in high-altitude meadows along with their cattle during summers, are also elated as they are earning money due to the flow of tourists.

"We have been living with these flowers since ages but never thought that these can become a source of earning for us. Visitors are mesmerised by these flowers, taking pictures and staying here for longer besides informing others about the beauty of the place," Mohd Hussain Chechi, Lumbardar of Jaie Ghati, said.

He said tribals sell milk products to visitors besides youths are earning handsomely by offering pony rides. "The Foxglove is a blessing in disguise for us and we are thankful to almighty for this wonderful gift," Chechi said. Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bhaderwah, Dilmir Choudhary said over 1.12 lakh tourists flocked to Jaie Ghati alone in the month of June.

"The district administration in collaboration with the tourism department had already taken various steps to highlight the natural beauty of this region to the outside world," he said. "The observance of International Yoga Day (on June 21) was held at Jaie Ghati with a purpose to bring the Foxglove to the limelight," he added. Over 5,000 people from different parts of the country and abroad turned up for the yoga session at the 7,850-feet-high Jaie Ghati, 70 kilometres from the Doda district headquarters, according to officials.

Kathua at a Glance

"chota pahalgaon".

Kathua District is located in the Jammu Province shouldering border with Punjab. The word “Kathua” is derived from the word “Thuan” in Dogri which means Scorpions. One of the schools of thoughts believes that its name is derived from the name of Rishi Kashyap who disguised himself as a Tortoise (Kashua) for strong meditataion. Kathua is also called the city of Sufis owing to the presence of large number of Sufi Shrines of Peers. Though there is no detailed and fully documented history of Kathua District yet there is also a belief that Jodh Singh, a Rajput of the Andotra clan migrated from Hastinapur to Kathua nearly 2,000 years ago and settled here. The three hamlets of Taraf Tajwal, Taraf Manjali and Taraf Bhajwal were by the same account established by his three sons Teju, Kindal and Bhaju. Tracing their ancestry to these three are the groups now known respectively as Tajwalia, Bhajwalia and Khanwalia Rajputs, of the Andotra sub-caste. The conglomeration of these three hamlets was loosely called “Kathai” in earlier times which with the passage of time came to be called as Kathua. Greek historians, who provide an insight into the ancient history of Jammu hills, prominently record the existence in this area of two powerful empires - Abhisara (present day Poonch) and Kathaioi - at the time of invasion of India by Alexander. Strabo describes Kathaioi as a mighty republic of that era, located in the foothills along the Ravi River. The topography of Kathaioi corresponds with the present day Kathua. Strabo describes the people of this republic as the epitome of bravery and courage, and they gave a tough fight to invading army of Alexander. There are many places which commemorate a visit to Kathua by Pandavas. Lord Krishna is also said to have come to this area, in order to get back from Jamabant the same diamond which is now known as Koh-i-Noor, part of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom.
