The Northern Lights, called aqsagniit by the Inuit, are described by the Arctic explorer Isaac Hayes the following way: "The light grew by degrees more and more intense, and from irregular bursts it settled into an almost steady sheet of brightness... The exhibition, at first tame and quiet, became in the end startling in its brilliancy. The broad dome above me is all ablaze... The colour of the light was chiefly red, but this was not constant, and every hue mingled in the fierce display. Blue and yellow streamers were playing in the lurid fire; and, sometimes starting side by side from the wide expanse of the illuminated arch, they melt into each other, and throw a ghostly glare of green into the face and over the landscape. Again this green overrides the red; blue and orange clasp each other in their rapid flight; violet darts tear through a broad flush of yellow, and countless tongues of white flame, formed of these uniting streams, rush aloft and lick the skies.”

Northern lights can last from a few seconds up to 45 minutes. Depending on the solar activity cycle, the aurora borealis come in many forms. They can take the form of an arch which can be as long as 1000 kilometers, a strip, a curtain, a veil, a wreath, or a pillar with rays extending up to a hundred kilometers. Some aurora are also referred to as “mirror” due to their reflections in the bodies of water, or as “stain” because of their resemblance with a small light cloud.

Depart from Montreal P.E. Trudeau Airport aboard a First Air jet for a 2H15 flight to Kuujjuaq, Ungava Bay. In Kujjuaq, you are greeted by your Inuit Adventures’ guide who will accompany you for the duration of your trip. In the afternoon, you will enjoy hearing the Elders telling incredible stories of their youth when they were nomads and hunting for their subsistence. The stories of their life growing up in the region will fascinate you.

At night, away from the noise and lights of the village, you have a chance to see the bright aurora borealis in the clear dark sky.

Leave the village at high tide aboard a freighter canoe or by snowmobile depending on the season, towards Old Fort Chimo located on the left bank of the Koksoak River. Visit the archeological remains of this area and explore the first HBC trading post where the fur trade business in Nunavik first started around 1830. It was only between 1950 and 1958 that the population established the settlement where Kuujjuaq is presently located. Visit the wreckage of the WWII US Navy frigate Upshur. As you return by canoe or snowmobile to Kuujjuaq where you will overnight at the coop hotel, you may come across migrating birds, marine life, wolves, musk-oxen and even herds of caribou.

Later at night, under a clear sky, marvel at the multiple shades of green of aurora borealis as it performs its unique dance.

With your guide, visit the village and meet local people. In the afternoon, the women will proudly present you their throat singing performance called Katadjak where sounds of birds, wind and waves will overwhelm you. At night, by vehicle, your guide will drive you to see the aurora borealis one last time. Overnight at the coop hotel.

In the morning, shop for sculptures, baskets and local clothing for souvenirs. In the afternoon, in a two hour session you will enjoy learning a few words of Inuktitut and use the syllabics to write your name.

We have gone to visit the polar bears three times in Churchill while staying on the shores of Hudson Bay and we have always seen the Northern Lights. Even late in the summer months on shorter days, we still managed to see the northern lights.

We travel with Churchill Wild who has three lodges on the Hudson Bay. Being far away from the light pollution in the city, these lodges are one of the best places to see the northern lights in the world. You really can rely on catching a glimpse. Churchill is so reliable that you may spot the lights anytime, even in summer.

You don’t need to go to a remote lodge though, Churchill is a small town with plenty of opportunities to see the northern lights. It’s more affordable to stay in Churchill where you can choose from cozy hotels or traditional lodge that will take you out on a a Tundra Buggy Explorer trip.

• Keep your ISO as low as you can to eliminate noise.
• Use manual focus and focus to infinity on your lens.

• Keeping in mind composition rules like including a foreground element or a north-facing composition to get the lights in the sky
• Not being afraid to experiment and have fun with your shots

The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis are caused by electrically charged particles from the Sun colliding with gaseous particles in the Earth’s atmosphere. The name Aurora Borealis has both Roman and Greek origins. In Roman mythology, Aurora was the goddess of the dawn, while Boreas was the god of the north wind in Greek mythology. This phrase, “the dawn of the North,” was coined in the 17th century by either French philosopher Petrus Gassendus or the famous Galileo. There are a number of myths and legends associated with the Northern Lights: in medieval times, Auroras were considered a messenger of famine or war, while Maoris and Europeans believed that the lights were reflections of fires and torches.

Tips for Northern Lights Tours

• Dress very warmly. You will be spending a lot of time standing outside in the cold (something down to -40C). Bring double the layers you think.
• Layers help!!
• Bring your camera, some extra snacks (especially if, like me, cookies make you too jittery from the sugar), hand and feet warmers, and your sense of adventure! You don’t need a ton of stuff, so don’t weigh yourself down for nightly viewings.
• Viewing is not guaranteed on any tour. The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon. The guides cannot control the weather or the clouds – just like a whale watching tour can’t control whether the whales are out from one day to the next.
• You will be staying up late so take a nap the day before and don’t plan a ton of things to do the day after if you don’t do well on limited sleep.
• These are remote locations, so they’re challenging to get to solo. Except that there will be some driving required to get away from the light pollution.
• The Northern Lights show up better on camera than they do to the naked eye. Bring your camera and set the shutter speed as fast as possible, balance it on a tripod, and use a fast lens.

The beautiful dancing waves of light seen in the night sky are an iconic symbol of the north. If you’ve ever had the privilege of admiring this natural wonder, you’re unlikely to ever forget it. In high-latitude regions, these polar lights are known as aurora borealis, or northern lights, but they also occur in the south (where they’re called aurora australis or southern lights). This phenomenon is thus visible near the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres. Do you know what causes this unusual light show? And did you know that you can see northern lights in our regions? Keep reading to find out more!

What causes auroras

Polar lights originate on the sun’s surface some 150 million kilometres (93 million miles) away from Earth. The sun sends out a constant flow of charged particles known as solar wind. We’re protected from these radioactive particles by the magnetosphere, an immense magnetic field generated by the Earth’s core that diverts their trajectory and projects them towards the Earth’s poles.

Usually, this does not induce any light phenomenon. However, from time to time, the solar wind is strong enough to penetrate Earth’s magnetic field. The stream of particles then interacts with gases in the magnetic field, generating brilliant auroras near the Earth’s poles. Polar lights come in a variety of colours: green, red, pink, yellow, purple and blue. Their colour depends on the altitude at which the interaction occurs in the atmospheric layer known as the thermosphere.

When to see them

The further north you go, the more likely you are to see the northern lights. However, they can also be observed in southern Québec, sometimes as far south as the U.S. border! Certain conditions must be met for them to appear. To find out where and when you can see the northern lights, consult an aurora forecast app or visit the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center website.

To be able to see the northern lights, the sky must be clear; you’re unlikely to spot them if there’s any cloud cover. You’ll also need to get away from city lights as well as avoid nights when the moon is full. A low and clear horizon will allow you to spot northern lights that are further north: it’s not uncommon to see auroras that are not directly above you but hundreds of kilometres away. Remember to also let your eyes adjust to the dark: avoid leaving your car lights on and don’t look at your phone outside!

Although the northern lights can be present throughout the year, you’re more likely to see them in the months of February/March and September/October. The best time to spot them is between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Remember to dress warmly if you plan to watch the night sky in the winter!

Where to see them in our regions

Bas-Saint-Laurent can be a great place to see the northern lights! In particular, Parc national du Bic is dark enough to see them easily. The Raoul-Roy lookout, at the western end of the park, offers a fantastic high view. Make sure you face north. Although auroras can appear anywhere in the sky, if you look in this direction, you may be able to see lights that are not directly above your head.

In Gaspésie, you can occasionally see the northern lights as far as Percé Rock, but my best observations have been in the Haute-Gaspésie sector. Light pollution is rare in this area. By following the coast of the St. Lawrence, where the horizon is low, you may be able to admire the aurora borealis dancing above Côte-Nord as well as further south. This is a great way to increase your chances of seeing this magical night show!

Côte-Nord is the best region to observe this phenomenon in Eastern Québec and the Uapishka (Groulx) Mountains are the best place to do so. Located beyond the 51st parallel on the edge of the Manicouagan Reservoir, Uapishka Station offers a clear view of the night sky. You’re bound to enjoy unforgettable moments in this unique wilderness environment! Northern lights can also be spotted further south in Côte-Nord. Keep your eyes on the sky at night: you may be in for a surprise!

Dene Indigenous aurora “hunting”—Northwest Territories

The Northwest Territories sit above Canada’s three western provinces and is home to the region’s Indigenous Dene peoples . Inuit aurora immersion—Nunavik, Quebec

Bordering the territory of Nunavut to the north, Nunavik is Quebec ’s northernmost region and one of four areas in Canada home to the country’s Inuit people . Based in Kuujjuaq on Ungava Bay, a northern lights tour with Inuit Adventures combines aurora viewing with an immersion in Inuit culture and local history.

By day, travelers canoe or snowmobile to Vieux Fort-Chimo, a 19th-century fur trading post; hear elders recount stories of a nomadic way of life; and listen to traditional throat singing, or katadjak —all led by an Inuit guide. Under inky skies, the guide offers Inuit insights into the meaning of the aurora.

Beginning in summer 2024, Inuit-owned Ungava Polar Eco-Tours will give travelers the chance to spot the northern lights from Nunavik’s remote, uninhabited Gyrfalcon Islands in Ungava Bay. On a week-long adventure, you’ll hike, bike, and boat, while looking for arctic wildlife (polar bears, musk ox, caribou) and learning about Inuit culture. Then, come nightfall, the aurora takes center stage. “You’ll see the lights almost every night at camp when the skies are clear,” says founder Jonathan Grenier.

Canada has several top destinations for Northern Lights viewing. You could catch the lights in any Canadian province, but your chances increase when you head north. The below list features our favourite places in Canada for seeing the Aurora. Much of Canada’s north can be hard to access, so we’ve only listed the easiest places to reach.

The best time to see Northern Lights in Canada is between late August through April. The longer, dark nights of Fall and Winter means the window of time for viewing is extended. In addition,  the colder weather means there is a higher chance of clear skies in northern latitudes — the cold air holds less moisture — increasing the odds of seeing the aurora borealis. 

The Northern Lights forecast is a great tool that you can use to track the intensity of the aurora over your travel days.

1. Churchill, Manitoba

Churchill is the best place to see the Northern Lights in Canada. The town sits under the auroral oval, and the Northern lights are visible up to 300 nights annually. Long nights and cold temperatures offer the best experience for witnessing auroral activity, so we recommend visiting during January, February or March.

Located on the shores of Hudson Bay, Churchill is also a hotspot for polar bear viewing in the fall and beluga whale viewing in the summer. You may see the lights during these seasons, too. 

Best time to go : January, February, and March  

Number of nights visible : up to 300 nights per year

Northern Lights viewing happens late at night, so there’s time for fun activities during the day. You can choose to go dogsledding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and more.

The Yukon is one of Canada’s northern territories and a top destination for Northern Lights viewing. The beginning of winter provides the highest probability of seeing the aurora borealis, though it is possible to spot the lights anytime from August to April. Like Churchill, visiting in winter is best as the nights are long and dark with clear skies. The lights appear brighter when there is a dark sky.   

In the summer, the Northern Lights are not visible in the Yukon because of the midnight sun.  

Best time to go : between November and March

3. Canadian Rockies

The Canadian Rockies are famous for dramatic mountain peaks and turquoise lakes, but did you know that you can see the Northern Lights here, too? Jasper and Banff national parks are two of Canada's best locations for Northern Lights viewing. 

Banff National Park is home to many recommended locations far from city lights that are perfect for visitors chasing the Northern Lights. Cascade Pond offers clear views to the northern horizon, while Lake Minnewanka’s large size provides ideal open skies. 

Jasper is the world's second-largest Dark Sky Preserve. Dark Sky Preserves are areas with low light pollution. So, Jasper is the perfect place to stargaze and watch the Northern Lights. You can visit Jasper during the Dark Sky Festival in October for an even more magical experience.

Best time to go : between October and April  

Number of nights visible : up to 300 nights per year, depending on light pollution

4. Newfoundland and Labrador

If you are on the East Coast of Canada, head to Newfoundland and Labrador to see the Northern Lights. Your best bet for viewing the Aurora in this province is to find a remote spot away from light pollution. There are some great viewing spots near the coast, in the national parks, and up north. The province has large areas of untouched wilderness, providing fantastic conditions for Northern lights viewing.  

Best time to go : September to October and March to April  

Number of nights visible : up to 60 nights per year

5. Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Yellowknife in Canada’s Northwest Territories is beneath the auroral oval, making it one of the best places for a Northern Lights vacation. The lights are visible up to 240 nights per year, with fall and winter being the main viewing seasons. Cold temperatures and clear, dark skies create the ideal canvas for the bright colours of the Canadian Aurora Borealis.

Understanding the science behind this light show can add to  your experience of seeing the Northern Lights in Canada. The aurora borealis is actually caused by solar activity. The sun emits a continuous stream of charged particles known as solar wind. As these charged particles flow towards Earth, they are drawn towards the planet’s poles by its magnetic field. When the charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere — primarily oxygen and nitrogen — they release energy in the form of light, which becomes the aurora borealis. 

The specific colours of the Northern Lights depend on which gas molecules are being excited and their altitude. Oxygen at higher altitudes (above 150 miles) produces red auroras, while oxygen at lower altitudes (up to 150 miles) produces the more common green lights. Nitrogen can result in rare blue or purple auroras.

Canada’s proximity to the magnetic north pole makes it one of the best places in the world to witness the Northern Lights. Regions such as Yukon, Northwest Territories, and parts of Manitoba and Alberta are particularly well-suited for aurora viewing — some are under the auroral oval, a recognized region of increased activity around the earth's poles. A combination of clear skies, minimal light pollution, and high geomagnetic activity ensures frequent and vivid displays.

Besides looking beautiful and being on many travelers’ wish lists, the Northern Lights are fascinating from a scientific point of view and have lots of cultural significance.

The lights are surrounded in many myths and legends across the world. For example, in Finnish folklore many people say the lights are created by the Arctic fox running through the snow. The country’s Sami people, however, believe the lights are the souls of the dead. In old Norse Viking legends, the lights were reflections bouncing off warriors’ armor.

In Canada, some Indigenous Peoples see the lights as sacred, regarding them as ancestral spirits dancing in the sky for the Great Spirit. For other groups, the lights are sky people playing ball, while others believe they are the spirits of those who passed in a difficult way. Many people speak hearing the lights, with crackling, sizzling, and hissing sounds. Some legends warn against attracting the attention of the lights because they can draw close and carry you away.

If you’re keen to capture photos of the Northern Lights, bring a tripod with you to keep your camera steady during longer exposure times.

• The best way to see the Northern Lights is on a guided tour. A guide that knows the local area will check the Aurora forecast and take you to unique viewing locations.   
• Be prepared to stay up late because the best time to view the Northern Lights is between 10pm and 2am, often around midnight. We suggest having a nap in the afternoon to compensate for these late nights!  
• Tour guides on a Canada Northern Lights tour will take you to remote viewing locations that might be hard to reach on your own. Be ready to travel and wrap up warm.
• An advantage of joining a tour is that most providers offer winter gear rentals (if you do not own appropriate attire for the chilly Canadian temperatures).

If you want to see the Northern Lights in Canada , you’re in luck. Depending on the area you visit, you can see the Aurora Borealis in Canada at just about any time of year if the weather conditions are good.

The first time we saw the Green Lady was during our trip through the Canadian Rockies . We were traveling in late May, which isn’t even during Aurora season in Canada , so we were excited to spot it!

Of course, if you want to visit Canada specifically to see this natural phenomenon, I recommend planning your travel itinerary accordingly. Don’t worry; in this guide, I’ll share the best time to visit Canada for the Northern Lights and the places you should go for the best chance of seeing a spectacular light show. I’ll also provide tips on where to stay and what tours you can take to make the most of your visit, so keep reading.

Best time to see the Northern Lights in Canada

While there are some parts of the country where it’s possible to see the aurora any time of year, the Northern Lights season in Canada runs from October to March , when the skies are darker for longer.

If you’re traveling outside the Northern Lights season , particularly in April, May, August, and September, there are a few hours of darkness in the southern provinces. So, if there is a good solar storm, you may be able to view the Canadian Northern Lights  there.

However, there are only a couple of times a year when solar storms are high enough to reach the southern area. If you’re flexible with your travel dates and have your heart set on seeing the aurora in Canada , it’s best to change your plans. Move your trip to late September or March, during the equinoxes, when the solar activity that causes the Northern Lights is highest.

Also, remember that the further north you travel, the more hours of darkness you’ll have in the winter (and the fewer hours of darkness you’ll have in the summer). In other words, you must plan your trip accurately to give yourself the best chance of spotting the aurora borealis in Canada .

It also helps to learn how to predict the Northern Lights . We use an app called My Aurora Forecast , which notifies us when solar activity suddenly increases. You should also keep an eye on the weather since no matter how intense the aurora is; it’ll be hard to see anything if it’s cloudy.

To sum up, these are the best times to see the Northern Lights in Canada :

• September – October : there is usually high solar activity, making it easy to see the aurora borealis in Canada .
• November – February : the days are short, and the nights are very dark, so that you can see the Northern Lights in Canada’s northern provinces.
• March – April : there is a lot of solar activity with the spring equinox, making it possible to see the Canadian Northern Lights .

I advise against traveling in the summer months, particularly in June and July. While some southern areas get a few hours of darkness, you’ll need high solar activity to see the aurora, so your chances are slim .

If you’re wondering where to see the Northern Lights in Canada , you should know that the northern provinces offer the best light shows, particularly from early fall to early spring. More specifically, these are the best places to see the aurora borealis in Canada :

• Whitehorse (Yukon), the best place to see the Northern Lights in Canada
• Yellowknife (Northwest Territories), another place to see the Aurora Borealis in Canada
• Churchill (Manitoba), another good place to view the Northern Lights in Canada
• Banff & Jasper , two places to see the Northern Lights in the Canadian Rockies

Overall, Whitehorse is the best place to watch the aurora borealis in Canada . In addition to its ideal latitude, Whitehorse typically has many clear winter nights, which is why it’s the headquarters for many Canadian Northern Lights tour operators .

1. Whitehorse (Yukon), the best place to see the Northern Lights in Canada

♦ Latitude 60°

The Yukon territory is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in the world thanks to its latitude and location. Ideally, you’ll stay in the Yukon capital of Whitehorse , as this city makes for a great base camp while you tour the rest of the area. Besides, some of the best Northern Lights hotels in Canada are here, such as the Northern Lights Resort & Spa , which has large glass windows so you can watch the aurora from inside.

Other excellent options include Hidden Valley Bed and Breakfast , which offers a viewing terrace and a location far from light pollution, and Triple B Bed n Breakfast , which is just outside Whitehorse and offers good value for money.

Regardless of where you stay, if you want to have the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in Yukon , you should book a tour. This way, you’ll have the help of a knowledgeable guide who can take you to the best viewing spots and share tips. I like this excursion , but if you’re interested in a multi-day tour, check out this one .

In addition to seeing the Northern Lights in Yukon, Canada , you can take advantage of Whitehorse’s location to visit other fascinating sites. For example, the Yukon Wildlife Preserve is home to various species like arctic foxes, elk, lynx, red foxes, and reindeer. The city is pretty cool, with institutes like the MacBride Museum and the bank of the Yukon River, where the Klondike gold rush occurred .

2. Yellowknife (Northwest Territories), another place to see the Aurora Borealis in Canada

♦ Latitude 62°

The Northwest Territories , specifically Yellowknife , is another perfect place to see the Canadian Northern Lights . The aurora shows up here so often that Yellowknife is known as the Northern Lights Capital of the World. In addition to the aurora borealis, you can take the opportunity to visit Great Slave Lake (one of the deepest lakes in North America) and the Cameron Falls Trail , which offers year-round hikes.

If you decide to watch the Northern Lights in Yellowknife, Canada , you’ll have many tours and accommodation options. One of the best hotels is the Super 8 by Wyndham Yellowknife , which boasts an excellent location and great rates. Another nice option is Tiga Bed and Breakfast , which has a terrace overlooking the city, making it a beautiful place to view the Dancing Lady.

The chances of spotting the aurora borealis in Yellowknife, Canada , are very high, but if it’s your first time here and you traveled solely for the Northern Lights, it’s best to book a tour. This 4-hour excursion is a great short-term option, although there is also this 5-day tour .

If, for whatever reason, you decide not to go to Yellowknife, another city in the Northwest Territories to consider is Tuktoyaktuk . At a latitude of 69°, it offers good chances of seeing the aurora, but remember that it’s much more remote, with fewer hotels and services .

3. Churchill (Manitoba), another good place to view the Northern Lights in Canada

♦ Latitude 58°

Churchill is among the best places to see the Northern Lights in Manitoba, Canada . This city is known as the Polar Bear Capital, featuring a large population of these bears in October and November. There are other attractions in the area that are sure to please, such as the Itsanitaq Museum , Wapusk National Park , and the Prince of Wales Fort , which overlooks the ocean.

If you want to see the Northern Lights in Canada from Churchill, stay at the Churchill Hotel , a simple yet comfortable accommodation with an ideal location to see the aurora. Another option is the IceBerg Inn , a small hostel with basic amenities, affordable rates, and clean and comfortable facilities.

Of course, you’ll have the most luck seeing the aurora borealis in Canada if you book a tour. In this case, the best option is this 8-day excursion through Manitoba , an all-inclusive package that includes your hotel, Northern Lights night tour, and other iconic attractions in the region. Be aware that this excursion departs from Winnipeg but includes the flight to Churchill in the price .

4. Banff & Jasper, two places to see the Northern Lights in the Canadian Rockies

♦ Latitude 52°

When there is sufficient solar activity, the Canadian Rockies are a wonderful place to see the Green Lady despite being at a lower latitude. Within this mountain range, four national parks are scattered between Alberta and British Columbia: Banff National Park , Jasper National Park , Yoho National Park , and Kootenay National Park .

I was in the Canadian Rockies when I first saw the Northern Lights, so it will always be a special place for me. One of the advantages of this region is that it still gets some hours of darkness even during months when the sun never sets in the northern areas. With a bit of luck, you can spot the aurora while enjoying this incredible natural environment.

If you decide you want to see the Northern Lights in Jasper National Park , I recommend staying at the Jasper Inn & Suites by INNhotels , an excellent accommodation with a modern bar, terrace, pool, and sauna.

Another option is the Emerald Lake Lodge in Yoho National Park. Considered one of Canada’s best Northern Lights hotels , it features cozy wooden cabins and a breathtaking lakeside location. This was where I was fortunate enough to see the Northern Lights for the first time!

As for tours, I like this excursion that includes admission to the Planetarium Dome Theatre and this multi-day tour through the Canadian Rockies .

5. Iqaluit (Nunavut), a secluded place to enjoy the Northern Lights in Canada

♦ Latitude 63°

You can also see the Northern Lights on Baffin Island , the largest island in Canada. More specifically, the capital of Nunavut , in Iqaluit , is an excellent viewing location, given its remoteness and high latitude of 63°. Just be prepared for freezing weather!

I’d highly recommend beginning to mid March since the solar activity is usually higher during that period to see the Northern Lights in Canada or any other part of the world 😉

I’m saving up for a trip to either Alaska or Iceland in 2025/26 during the next peak. My plan is to stay for about a month to ensure I get to see the lights. If you had a choice between any location at any time of year what would you choose for highest probability of seeing them? Is there any way to determine the areas with least cloud cover? I’d opt for Iceland since it’s much easier to move around. September and March are usually great months in terms of solar activity, but there’s no way to predict the cloud forecast in places like Iceland or Alaska 😉

The best areas to see the Northern Lights in Ontario are located in the North of the Province close to the Hudson Bay, which is a very remote area with no facilities. My recommendation in November and October is to visit Churchill, Manitoba, where you can enjoy the Aurora and other activities like Polar bear watching 😉

Hi Juan, You need clear skies to see the Northern Lights. It’s a matter of having good luck. However, if you want to increase your chances, I would go to Iceland where you have at least a clear sky per week during the winter.

September is very early for the northern locations, so I would try in the Canadian Rockies. However, bear in mind you will need a high KP, something that only happens from time to time.

I saw them in mid-may from the Canadian Rockies. That latitude is probably the only one from where you can see the lights at that time of the year.

On the other hand, chances are very low, since you need a huge display of Aurora to see the Northern Lights at that latitude. It’s rare but not impossible 😉

Even though there are chances of seeing the Aurora in Seattle and Vancouver, the chances are extremely low since you need a very high solar storm (which is a very rare event). If you want to see the Northern lights in Canada, the closest place to go having a realistic chance is either Whitehorse or Yellowknife.

In any case, I suggest downloading an Aurora Forecast app in case there is a big solar storm and you have the opportunity of seeing it when you visit the Seattle-Vancouver area.

See the Northern Lights in the Rocky mountains is a matter of luck. You will need a KP over 6.5 at least and this doesn’t happen every year.

We were very very lucky. If you are too, I will suggest you to go to Peyto Lake or Emerald Lake.
