If you’ve ever had to sleep in your car, even just for one night, you know how terribly hard and unforgiving its surfaces can be—and how not-so rested you feel in the morning. Whether your car camping adventures are unexpected or pre-planned, you need a comfortable place to spread out and sleep when night falls. While laying across your back seat is an (uncomfortable) option, carrying a lightweight, easy-to-inflate car air bed is a much better alternative. These convenient mats and pads inflate like air mattresses, and they’re sized to fit into your cargo area, back seat, or the bed of your truck so you can relax and get some solid shut-eye. Discover how to turn your car into a cozy sleep spot that won’t cause tossing and turning with one of these convenient travel beds.

Our Methodology

To choose the best car air beds , I used my own car camping experience with different air mattresses and sleep pads to identify top brands and reputable products within the space. From there, I considered beds that would work for a variety of vehicle makes and models as well as options that could work in different configurations, or even do double duty for tent camping. My top picks were those car air beds that were easy to inflate without any special accessories beyond your standard 12-volt pump as well as those that are durable and resistant to punctures or leaks and light enough to carry when you’re short on space.

Best Car Air Beds: Reviews & Recommendations

Best self-inflating, teton sports comfortlite sleeping pad, best for trucks, rightline gear truck bed air mattress, best versatile, nemo roamer sleeping pad, our verdict on the best car air beds.

When it comes to a flawless in-vehicle fit, it’s hard to beat the customized shape and sizing of the Luno 2.0 Air Mattress . Made specifically for car campers, it’s a pick that’s as durable as it is comfortable, and it’s equally supportive for two. If value is your top priority, the Klymit Static V Sleeping Pad is another supportive and durable option, though it’s smaller overall. You can take this air bed car camping and backpacking or use it anywhere you need solid extra cushioning.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Car Air Bed

Before you squish any camping-ready air mattress into your car, think about a few key details. Sleeping in your car means you need a comfort-enhancing air bed that’ll fit in your available space. To find the best fit for your particular make and model, make sure to keep these factors and features in mind.

Key Features of Car Air Beds

Easy to inflate.

If you can’t get your car air bed inflated when you’re ready to hit the hay, you’re not only going to be frustrated but also potentially sleeping on an uncomfortable surface. Since your only power source is (typically) the available outlets in your vehicle, opt for a car air bed that utilizes a compatible electric inflator or opt for a self-inflating model. For the highest level of convenience and worry-free setup, self-inflating beds can be the best pick when you’re camped out in your car.

Durable, Puncture-Resistant Material

It’s no secret that air mattresses can spring leaks. They might be quick to set up and comfortable for camping, but even the best air mattresses are prone to slow leaks, punctures, or an inability to hold the right firmness once inflated. Pay close attention to the material. Choosing a pad or mattress that’s constructed with durable, puncture-resistant, and rugged material can stave off leaks and inflation problems.

Sized for Car Use

Your basic air mattress is sized for tent camping, not sleeping in your car. And as you’re likely aware, not all cars, crossovers, or even SUVs have perfectly rectangular cargo space, making a simple air mattress a poor fit. Instead, make sure you’re choosing a pad or air bed that’s designed for car sleeping. These products tend to be narrower and sized lengthwise to fit particular makes, models, or cargo spaces so you don’t have to struggle with a comfortable fit.

Pricing

You can find car air beds for $60 to $400. It all depends on the quality level you’re looking for, and how high-tech and potentially comfortable you’d like your sleeping space to be. If you’re looking for budget-friendly options that don’t require inflation tools and don’t mind a thinner pad, you can find products around $60 to $125. Car air beds that offer more cushioning and more high-tech details, like foam, self-inflation, and durable material can run between $175 and $250. The most premium product picks cost from $250 to $400, depending on size.

You’ve got questions. The Drive has answers.

A: This really depends on the make and model you’re driving and how much available interior space you’re working with. While SUVs and trucks might have enough room to fit a traditional twin or queen air mattress, most vehicles will require something slimmer and smaller. It’s best to look for air beds specifically designed for car use rather than a standard air mattress.

A: If you’re behind the wheel, you definitely shouldn’t be trying to lounge on an air bed. Your passengers shouldn’t either. Your air bed should be rolled up and put away while you’re in motion, and everyone should be wearing a seatbelt.

A: You shouldn’t need to open a window if you’re worried about breathing easily. If it’s warm out or you want a little ventilation while you sleep, you can crack a window or two.

The Complete Highway Handbook: A Beginner-Friendly Intro To Car Camping

The Complete Highway Handbook: A Beginner-Friendly Intro To Car Camping

The Complete Highway Handbook: A Beginner-Friendly Intro To Car Camping Description: Getting into car camping can be daunting. That’s why we launched the Highway Handbook–a beginner-friendly guide to car camping in blog form–this past year. Every month for seven months, we answered a frequently asked question that often ends up in our DMs (or in your Google search bar). That process resulted in the following Highway Handbook blog posts: Vol. 1: What Is Car Camping? Vol. 2: Is Car Camping Fun? Vol. 3: Is Car Camping Safe? Vol. 4: What Do I Need For Overnight Car Camping? Vol. 5: How To Camp During Busy Holiday Weekends Vol. 6: How To Stay Cool While Camping Vol. 7: How To Car Camp Legally In National Parks Essentially, the Highway Handbook is full of information we wish we’d known before we went car camping for the first time. To help you navigate this stockpile of car camping resources, we’re doing something different for this eighth and final edition of the series. Below, we’ll summarize each article and share a couple of our favorite tips and tricks from each one. Our goals here are twofold. First, we want to help you get a crash course in all things car camping. Secondly, we hope this points you toward articles worth exploring further before your next adventure. Now, without further ado, let’s dive in. What Is Car Camping?Highway Handbook Volume 1 Defining “car camping” is surprisingly difficult–so much so that we dedicated our first Highway Handbook article largely to this topic. The difficulty stems from the fact that the definition of car camping has changed over time. Historically, car camping has referred to camping in a tent near a parked vehicle. The phrase helped distinguish trailhead hangouts and roadside overnights from backpacking, which, of course, refers to trekkers who haul gear in packs and hike far from their vehicles. Nowadays, car camping also refers to campers who spend the night in the vehicles (preferably on an ultra-comfy Luno mattress). For clarity’s sake, this is the definition that we stick to here at Luno, and we call camping in a tent near a parked car “tent camping.” Tip # 1: Take Into Account The Pros and Cons of Car Camping After breaking down definitions of car camping, overlanding, and more, we take a moment in this first Highway Handbook article to discuss the pros and cons of car camping. If you’re on the fence and unsure if car camping is for you, you’ll definitely want to give this article a read. Here are a few of the top reasons why we love car camping and prefer it over all alternatives: Safety: Car camping is much safer than tent camping, namely because you can lock your vehicle. Whether you’re worried about critters or camp crime, car camping is the way to go.  Comfort: Forget tossing and turning on bumpy, uneven ground. When you’re camping in vehicle, you have a flat sleeping platform at the ready as soon as you drop your backseats. Factor in a comfortable, adventure-ready Luno mattress and you’ll be sleeping better than ever on your next trip.   Gear Hauling:  Don’t get us wrong, we love backpacking. But one of the many alluring aspects of car camping is that you have room in your trunk for all of the extras. When you're camping in your rig, you can bring bikes, climbing gear, fishing rods–or all of the above! Tip #2: Get Dialed In With Car Camping Basics  Unsure what gear you need to give car camping a shot? No worries, you’re in the right place. In this first Highway Handbook article, we also discuss basic car camping gear, including: Luno mattresses: Our mattresses are incredibly comfortable, rugged, and built for life on (and off) the road. They’re also available in a range of shapes and sizes that correspond to diverse vehicle makes and models. Input your vehicle make, model, and year here, and we’ll get you dialed in with the right mattress for your rig! Our new Packable Camp Pillow: Whether you’re camping in an RV, a van, or an SUV, our Packable Camp Pillow is the way to go. It’s slightly smaller and more compressible than a standard pillow, making it easy to transport. It’s also stuffed with removable shredded memory foam that allows campers to fine-tune firmness to their liking. Once you camp with this pillow, there’s no going back! Organization Essentials: One of the most important tips we can give first-time car campers is this: stay organized. An organized rig reduces stress on the road more than anything else. After all, the goal is to use your gear, not waste time looking for it. Organization essentials like our Cargo Hammock, Upcycled Gear Tote, Seatback Organizer, and more will help you keep your rig in ship-shape and your gear accessible.  Is Car Camping Fun?Highway Handbook Volume 2 Still not sure if car camping is for you? Give this second Highway Handbook post a read. We dive into a few reasons why we think car camping is the most fun way to camp on the planet, among them: Tip #1: Cook Up A Storm We already mentioned how car camping allows you to haul more gear. Perhaps more importantly, car camping allows you to haul more grub, too. When we’re car camping, we like to bring healthy produce and proteins, savory sauces, s’mores–you name it. You can pack a cooler with your favorite beverages, whip up a storm for your friends and family, or even cook over an open flame (assuming there are no fire bans). Tip #2: Embrace The Detour If you’re relying on public transportation, you’re tied to an itinerary. Not so when you’re road-tripping. Car campers are free to embrace the art of the detour. Stumble upon a funky roadside restaurant? Give it a try! A local recommends a hike you just can’t miss? Go check it out! Is Car Camping Safe?Highway Handbook Volume 3 If you’re new to car camping, safety is undoubtedly a primary concern. However, safety is also a primary reason why we love car camping. In this third edition of the Highway Handbook, we break down several reasons why car camping is safer than other modes of camping and share a few of our favorite tips for staying safe during car camping trips. Tip # 1: Carefully Consider Critters When you’re camping in the wilderness, critters can always pose a threat. Of course, the extent of that threat depends on the critters at play. Mosquitos and gnats? They might be more of an annoyance than a danger. Grizzly bears? Play your cards wrong and you might not come home. That said, car camping provides better protection from virtually all critters than alternative camping methods. The raised platform of the vehicle makes snakes and scorpions less of a concern. Locking car doors provides welcome peace of mind and protection when it comes to grizzlies, wolves, and other apex predators. And when you use our mesh Car Window Screens and Sunroof Window Screen, you can enjoy a welcome breeze in your vehicle without inviting those pesky mosquitos and gnats. All told, if you want to feel safer while spending nights in the woods, car camping has your name on it. Tip #2: Bring a Camp Buddy One of the best safety tips we can share with you is to bring a camp buddy. We love solo adventures, but the fact of the matter is that camping with a friend or significant other dramatically decreases your risk. How so? Well, first off, you’re less susceptible to camp crime when you’re traveling with another camper (or more). Unpleasant brushes with bears are also less likely in bigger groups, or at the very least, you have a better chance of scaring them off. Plus, in the event of an emergency, you have more folks on deck to help out. If you’re injured and need medical attention, or you need to drive to the hospital, having a camp buddy is invaluable. What Do I Need For Overnight Car Camping?Highway Handbook Volume 4 This fourth Highway Handbook article provides aspiring adventurers with a deep dive into the gear you need for outdoor overnights, including mattresses purpose-built for car camping and storage essentials. But that’s not all. We also stress the importance of intangibles like pre-trip planning, preventive vehicle maintenance, how and why we’re always keeping an eye on the weather, and more. Tip #1: Use Apps And Maps To Your Advantage  One of the most useful tools you have in your car camping arsenal is already in your pocket. Your phone can be a mission-critical piece of equipment, whether you’re looking for a place to camp or checking weather and road conditions. Our advice? Load up your phone with adventure-ready apps like iOverlander, our go-to app for finding free car camping, and GAIA, a helpful mapping app for offline adventures. And last but not least, don’t forget to download maps and more before you leave the realm of cell service! Tip #2: Pack Safety Gear While pre-trip planning and common sense can keep you out of trouble, bringing safety gear along for your adventures is still a smart play. No matter where we roam or how close we are to home, we like to car camp with two vital pieces of safety equipment:  A Satellite Communication Device: A satellite comms device, like a Garmin inReach, allows you to communicate with friends and family, or, in a worst-case scenario, search and rescue.  A First Aid Kit: A First Aid Kit is absolutely essential, whether you’re dealing with minor scrapes or more serious injuries. It’s equally important that you know how to use it, so be sure to take a Wilderness First Aid course, too. How To Camp During Busy Holiday WeekendsHighway Handbook Volume 5 There’s an art to camping during holiday weekends, and we spill all the secrets in this fifth Highway Handbook article. Overall, the main trick is to adjust the way you plan your trip, but it’s helpful to adjust your mindset, too. Tip #1: Target Less Popular Destinations Popular destinations like national parks are understandably overrun on holiday weekends. The best way to car camp during hectic holidays, then, is to avoid these ultra-popular destinations, and instead target hidden gems and remote wilderness areas. Use holiday weekends as an excuse to take a longer trip, go deeper, and venture off the beaten path. Tip #2: Have A Backup Plan (And A Backup Plan For Your Backup Plan) Unless you have a reservation locked in for a campsite (which isn’t a bad idea on holiday weekends), it pays to have a plan B and C in your back pocket. Use apps like iOverlander to find nearby BLM land where dispersed camping is allowed. Map out Walmarts and rest areas ahead of your trip, just in case you’re in a pinch and need a place to park for the night. When you’re camping in your vehicle with a Luno mattress, you can even stealth camp in quiet neighborhoods if your campground of choice is full. How To Stay Cool While CampingHighway Handbook Volume 6 Sky-rocketing temps got you down? Don’t sweat it. In this sixth Highway Handbook article, we break down our favorite car camping strategies and gear for beating the heat. Tip #1: Use Window Screens And Fans To Your Advantage When you’re car camping in warm weather, airflow is your friend. And the best way to generate airflow is a combination of our Window Screens and Car Camping Fan. Our Window Screens and Sunroof Window Screen are made of durable, stretchy mesh that blocks bugs but let’s in the cooling breeze. An added benefit? The black fabric also helps block the sun and gives car campers more privacy in busy campgrounds. If the breeze isn’t cooperating, our Car Camping Fan is a must. This compact yet powerful five-inch fan has three speeds, powers via USB-C, and boasts an articulating suction-cup mount so you can aim it directly at your kisser. Separately, these sleep-enhancing essentials are kick-ass. Together, they’ll revolutionize your nights on the road. Tip #2: Pick Your Destination Wisely As much as we love the desert, we tend to avoid it during the warmer months. Instead, we’ll head to high-alpine zones and cooler coastal areas to beat the heat. Similarly, as much as we love road-tripping in Mexico, you’re more likely to find us in the Northern US or Canada during the summer. Warmer weather means that northern latitudes are likely the move. Bonus Tip: While the above advice is sound, nothing’s written in stone. It’s equally important to check the weather before you head out. That way, if your destination of choice is too hot, you can pivot and head to a cooler locale. That ability to pivot your plans at the last minute is one of many reasons why we love car camping so much. If you’re travelling by rail or train, you simply don’t have that freedom. How To Car Camp Legally In National ParksHighway Handbook Volume 7 If you’ve ever tried to car camp for free in a national park, you know it’s easier said than done. There are “no overnight parking” signs everywhere, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed when looking for a place to camp. In this seventh edition of the Highway Handbook, we share car camping tricks that help us explore and enjoy national parks without any stress. Tip #1: Plan–And Reserve Your Campsite–In Advance Sadly, you won’t find free, legal car camping in national parks. Instead, you’ll want to splurge and reserve a campsite at a campground operated by the national park. These campgrounds may cost a pretty penny–especially compared to the free car camping we prefer–but they do have advantages. First off, you eliminate the stress of finding a site on a busy weekend when you have a reservation. Additionally, you’ll find amenities like bathrooms, trash receptacles, fire pits, toilets, showers, and the like. That said, these campgrounds can sell out extremely quickly, so it pays to plan in advance. Campsites are often released six months ahead of time on recreation.gov, but the release schedule varies from park to park and even campground to campground. Do your research as far in advance as possible so the odds are in your favor, then set an alarm on your calendar so you can jump on sites when they are released. Tip #2: Camp Nearby And Take Day Trips Into The Park While free, legal car camping isn’t usually available inside national park boundaries, you can generally find it within a quick drive. After all, national parks are often neighbored by BLM land, national forests, and other less crowded, less regulated public lands that offer car campers the opportunity to enjoy free dispersed camping. Use apps like iOverlander to map out potential campsites near the national park of your choice, then take day trips into the park and explore to your heart’s content. ______ You’ve Taken The Crash Course, But It’s Far From Over There you have it–a quick-and-dirty rundown of our Highway Handbook series. We hope this series, and this article in particular, helps you confidently embrace car camping and sidestep some of the common mistakes greenhorns inevitably make. That said, the very best learning you can do is out on the road. So gear up, assemble your squad, hop in your rig, and get after it! Thanks for reading, and as always, we’ll see you on the road, The Luno Crew

Highway Handbook: How To Car Camp Legally In National Parks

Highway Handbook: How To Car Camp Legally In National Parks

Highway Handbook: How To Car Camp Legally In National Parks Description: You’ve got questions? We’ve got answers. That’s the gist of our new educational series, The Highway Handbook. One of our main goals at Luno is to make the outdoors more accessible, and we mainly do that by designing comfortable air mattresses and nifty accessories that help you turn your everyday vehicle into an extraordinary adventure mobile. But gear alone doesn’t remove barriers to the great outdoors, and sometimes, the simple act of sharing knowledge makes all the difference. In The Highway Handbook, our team of car camping experts will answer questions that regularly bombard our DMs. Whether you’re a car camping veteran or new to the game, we hope this series helps you get outside, explore, and enjoy time in nature with friends and family. In this month’s edition of The Highway Handbook, we’re tackling a simple question with a complex answer: How can you car camp legally in national parks? First off, let us start by saying that we love car camping in national parks, especially in parks that are home to noteworthy bear populations like Yosemite National Park, Glacier National Park, Grand Teton National Park, so on and so forth. When you have a Luno mattress for your car, truck, van, or trailer, you can camp comfortably in your rig and lock your doors at night for invaluable peace of mind in bear country. Plus, there’s no better feeling than waking up in your comfy cabin on wheels just steps away from epic vistas and breathtaking trails. That said, you’ll find sign after sign that prohibits overnight parking and camping in national parks. So what gives? Is it possible to car camp legally in national parks? Is it worth it to risk a citation by camping illegally? In this helpful guide, we’ll answer all of these questions and more. Below, we share info on how we car camp in national parks without breaking the law–or getting the dreaded nocturnal knock from a peeved park ranger. We’ll also share info on how to make reservations at popular national parks campgrounds, why we often camp just outside of national parks, and other tricks of the trade. Paid Campgrounds: Your Best Bet For Car Camping In National Parks Fortunately, car camping is allowed in most national parks. Unfortunately, you have to pay for it. It makes sense. National parks are extremely popular adventure destinations. Unlike BLM land or national forests, where car campers have virtually free reign to camp where they please, car camping in national parks is typically limited to paid campgrounds. Take Grand Teton National Park, for instance. If you check out the National Park Service’s Teton Camping web page, the first notice explicitly states: “Car camping or sleeping overnight in vehicles is NOT allowed in park pullouts, parking areas, picnic grounds, or any place other than a designated campground. Overnight parking at trailheads is only permitted with a backcountry permit.” We wish this weren’t the case. Ideally, we could park overnight and camp where we please. However, just imagine how overrun national parks would be if camping weren’t limited to campgrounds… It wouldn’t be pretty. Unsurprisingly, the regulations are fairly strict and reinforced by rangers. That said, there are benefits to car camping in paid national park campgrounds. You often have access to amenities like potable water, trash receptacles, restrooms, and hot showers. If you’re getting your digital nomad on, you might even find Wi-Fi (although for many campers, this is actually a negative). Additionally, you don’t have to stress about finding a place to camp, since these sites are typically available through an online reservation system. Reservations: A Smart Move At National Park Campgrounds Free camping is one of the many benefits of car camping. Unlike tent campers, car campers can crash for free at highway rest stops or Walmart parking lots, as well as national forests and BLM land. As such, we typically recommend car campers avoid paying for campground reservations, instead using car camping apps and other tools to find free car camping. This advice goes out the window when you’re targeting popular national park campgrounds. We’ve said it once, we’ll say it again: these campsites can sell out quicker than Taylor Swift tickets. If you’re hoping to camp in a national park, paying for a reservation far in advance is a smart move. In fact, it’s often the only move. This holds especially true during busy summer months, and even more so on hectic holiday weekends. Our advice? Plan your trip months in advance if possible. The National Park Service will release reservations on Recreation.gov, often six months ahead of time. However, reservation schedules and releases vary from park to park, and they can even vary from campground to campground within a national park. It subsequently pays to research your destination of choice and plan your trip ahead of time. Once you find out when a park releases reservations for your preferred campground, set an alarm on your calendar so you’re online and ready to snap up a site as soon as they’re available. More Reservation Tips: Looking for a national park campground? Start your search on the NPS’s Find a Campground page. Set alarms to ensure you’re online and on it when campsites are released. Chronic procrastinator? Forgot to make reservations? Was your campsite of choice sold out? No worries. Check the National Park Service’s reservation website before you hit the road. It’s possible cancellations or newly opened campsites will be available, even if they weren’t when you checked before. Illegal Car Camping In National Parks We do not recommend illegal car camping in National Parks for several reasons. First and foremost, you risk unwelcome wake-ups from park rangers. Take it from us, no one wants to wake up to a flashlight tap-tap-tapping the window. Not to mention, those wake-up calls can be accompanied by a hefty ticket. It’s somewhat ironic that hunting for cheap camping can result in an exorbitant fine, isn’t it? Interrupted sleep and financial woes aside, you’re also potentially putting unwanted, unnecessary pressure on delicate, dynamic ecosystems that are already over-traveled. For this reason alone, we discourage you from such stealthy endeavors. Long story short? While you may be able to get away with stealth camping in less heavily visited corners of bigger parks, it’s not worth the risk or the impact. If you’re unable to afford or secure a campground reservation, your best bet is to camp outside of park boundaries. No matter where you park, always keep the 7 Leave No Trace principles in mind. Finding Car Camping Near National Parks Because car camping is limited and relatively pricey in national parks, we usually don’t camp inside park boundaries, even when exploring a national park is our road trip objective. Instead, we often camp just outside of park boundaries and then take day trips into the park for hikes, climbs, fishing missions, etcetera. You’ll often find wilderness areas, BLM land, or national forests just outside of national parks, and these land designations are much more friendly to dispersed camping and budget car camping. If you’re new to car camping and want to learn how to find a solid, free campsite for the night, check out our Comprehensive Guide to Finding Free Car Camping. In this detailed guide, we dive into the following: Our favorite apps to find free car camping The importance of land designations (E.g. free car camping in national parks is a no-go, but free car camping in national forests is definitely the move. See Drake meme above).  The art of “moochdocking” How to make the most of Walmart parking lots and rest stops  And so much more! When you use the tips and tricks above, you can easily camp for free within a quick drive from a national park. If you’re late to the party and campgrounds are all booked up, or you simply would rather use that campground fee to put gas in your tank, camping outside of park boundaries is the way to go. Four Accessories To Car Camp In National Parks Like A Pro We mentioned earlier how a Luno mattress can make camping in national parks a breeze, but we’ve also designed a ton of nifty car camping accessories that’ll help turn your everyday vehicle into an even more comfortable camp rig. Here are a few of our favorites: Craving some breeze at night? Our new, mesh, magnetic Sunroof Window Screen snaps to the top of your vehicle so you can open the sunroof. It’s a pro move if you want to let in all of the breeze and none of the bugs.  Our classic Car Window Screens are a similar trip-saver for hot sleepers. The mesh screens stretch over your passenger doors, allowing you to crack the windows without inviting unwanted insects.  Here’s another pro tip for still, muggy nights: pair the window screens with our compact, powerful Car Camping Fan for soothing airflow, anytime, anywhere! If you’re camping in a busy campground, our Privacy Curtains are a must. The easy-to-install curtains don’t just hinder the gaze of unwelcome looky-loos, either–they also block sunrays in case you’re hoping to sleep in. ________ Enjoy National Parks–No Matter Where You Park! To sum up our thoughts on car camping in national parks, free car camping is rad. Sadly, it’s virtually non-existent in park boundaries. However, if you’re down to plan your trip well in advance and pay for a reservation, national park car camping is a breeze. Or, if you’d prefer to wing it on a last-minute trip, or simply don’t want to pay for camping, it’s easy enough to find free car camping close to most national parks We wish you luck–and easy, breezy, fine-free car camping adventures–on your next national park mission. 10 Car Camping Hacks for Beginners

10 Car Camping Hacks for Beginners

10 Car Camping Hacks for Beginners Description: New to car camping? First and foremost, welcome to the party! You’re not alone. Outdoor enthusiasts of all creeds are embracing the car camping movement these days, enticed by the freedom, comfort, ease, and security that come from snoozing in your vehicle. And, if we may humbly add, you’re in the right place, too. Here at Luno, we’re a crew of adventure-loving car campers obsessed with crafting the best car camping mattresses and accessories on the market. Below, our car camping experts break down ten tips to help you make the most of your first car camping adventures.  1. How To Dial In Your Sleep Setup Sleepless nights can ruin even the most epic camping trips. That’s why we believe your sleep setup is the most critical piece of the car camping puzzle–and why we generally prefer car camping over tent camping in the first place. Forget sleeping on bumpy, uneven ground–when camping in your car, you have a flat sleeping platform as soon as you fold down the back seats. And compared to a flimsy, nylon-walled tent, a lockable, metal car offers better protection from the elements, camp crime, and critters, giving car campers sleep-enhancing peace of mind. If you decide to try car camping, we highly recommend checking out a durable, well-made, meticulously designed Luno mattress. We have several mattress styles and configurations, most of which are designed to fit flawlessly inside a specific vehicle type. Among them? Our flagship, award-winning AIR Mattress for SUVs and Hatchbacks, our AIR Truck Bed Mattress for off-road-ready rigs, and our revolutionary AIR Van Front Cab Mattress, which turns the front seats of popular van models into a guest room for pets, kids, and adults under 5’7”. We even offer an AIR Mattress specifically for 4Runners, and an ultra-rugged XRD 4Runner option that’s optimized for overlanding. If you want the flexibility to camp anywhere, our new ground-breaking AIR+FOAM Mattress has your name on it. First off, this mattress boasts our comfiest construction ever–a magical mix of supportive air channeling and ultra-cushy foam padding. But it’s also our most versatile mattress, designed for vehicle camping–and everything else, too. The rectangular shape is perfect for rooftop tents, trailer camping, your friend’s living room floor, or a traditional tent. Plus, if you’re hoping to chuck the mattress in your hatchback or SUV, it comes with a proprietary Head Support Bridge Attachment that turns your vehicle backseat into a bed in seconds. Once you have your mattress dialed, a few more elements will help you customize the sleep setup of your dreams. Soft, stretchy fitted sheets boost comfort and help protect your mattress from wear and tear. Our award-winning Packable Camp Pillow is another pro move–it’s slightly smaller and much more compressible than a standard pillow, with adjustable firmness and a two-sided pillow case that campers love. Finally, check the forecast and use sleeping bags or a combo of blankets and comforters to dial in your sleep setup for the temperatures at hand.   2. Pack Smart and Compartmentalize Your Gear Visual learner? Watch our Car Camping 101 episode on gear storage solutions The best packing advice we can give you is to compartmentalize your gear ahead of your trip. What does that mean? Simple. Separate your kitchen supplies, clothes, toiletries, cleaning supplies, etcetera–this will make it much easier to find what you’re looking for on the road. You likely have storage solutions that’ll help you do just that lying around the house. Car campers can use anything from milk crates to bins, cargo tubs to duffels. Clear plastic bins are always a smart play, as you’ll be able to easily find whatever you’re looking for. However, if you want purpose-built gear designed specifically for car camping, check out our adventure-ready accessories.  Our nifty Cargo Hammock turns unused ceiling space into invaluable storage real estate.  Our Gear & Shoe Storage Bags attach to the outside of your vehicle using microfiber-lined magnets, freeing up space inside your sleeping quarters. They also have mesh bottoms that allow stinky shoes and damp gear to drip dry and air out.  Our durable, open-topped, upcycled 50-Liter Gear Tote can stash everything from your favorite snacks to your climbing rack.  Our new Headrest Organizer and tried-and-true Seatback Organizer transform the back of your seats into compartmentalized storage, replete with pockets and pouches for smaller, easy-to-lose essentials like headlamps, bug spray, chargers, and more.  While smart storage solutions and an intentional pack job are a tremendous start, it’s important to continue compartmentalizing gear while you’re on the road. For instance, if you use your headlamp, make sure you put it back where it belongs. Otherwise, you’ll quickly lose track of it.  3. Free Up Space In Your Car One of our favorite aspects of car camping is that you have much more hauling capacity than you do while, say, backpacking. We’re not ultralight gram counters by any means, and we love to bring everything from fishing gear and camp chairs to coolers packed with fresh produce and cold beers. However, it doesn’t hurt to invest in gear that’s compact, space-efficient, or multi-purpose to help free up space in the car for road trip buddies or more toys. Here are a few examples to keep on your radar: Rumpl’s Puffy Blankets are the perfect way to pack a cozy punch. They’re durable enough for off-road adventures, warm enough for moderately cold nights, and pack down into an included stuff sack for noteworthy portability. Plus, they’re much better for cuddling couples than single sleeping bags.  Leave your pillow at home and bring our Packable Camp Pillow. It’s smaller and more compressible than a standard pillow, and you can add or remove the shredded memory foam filler to fine-tune firmness to your liking.  Try out the REI Co-op Flexlite Camp Chair for a durable, comfortable seat wherever you go. It’s lightweight, reliable, and collapses to minimize packed volume. Collapsible Water Jugs are another way to save space on the road. That said, unless you’re certain that you’re camping near a potable water source, we always like to bring a water filter, too.   A multi-tool, like a Leatherman, can help you tackle a ton of camp tasks, ranging from fixing gear to chopping veggies.  4. Stay Cool And Beat The Heat Worried about extreme temps? Don’t sweat it–just watch our Car Camping 101 episode for more hot- and cold-weather camping tips.  Staying cool while car camping can be a challenge, especially in the summer. But if you prepare accordingly, it’s a breeze–pun intended.  There are two main strategies we like to deploy to stay cool while car camping. The first is smart trip planning. Research your destination of choice before your trip. Is it outrageously hot in summer? Maybe save it for a spring or fall expedition. Also, check the weather forecast leading up to your trip to ensure you’re not barrelling headlong into a heat wave. An added benefit of car camping is that you’re usually not tied to an itinerary, so if the weather seems uncomfortably warm or dangerously hot, pivot your trip and pick a more amenable destination. During the warmer months, we like to car camp on the cooler coast or high in the alpine to beat the heat. The second strategy is generating airflow, which helps us stay cool and sleep much better while camping in the heat. Here are three key pieces of gear to maximize airflow: Our mesh Car Window Screens stretch over your car doors, allowing you to roll down the windows and enjoy the breeze without letting in pesky mosquitos.  Our new mesh Sunroof Window Screen snaps over the sunroof thanks to integrated magnets along the perimeter. Like the original Window Screens, it lets in a welcome breeze but stops gnats at the door.  Our Car Camping Fan is a powerful, compact, USB-powered fan replete with an articulating ball mount and versatile suction cup. We love to use this fan whenever it’s warm out, but it’s nothing short of a trip-saver on still, muggy summer nights.  Separately, the Car Window Screens, Sunroof Window Screen, and Fan are immensely useful, but together, they’re game-changing, producing sleep-improving airflow campers will appreciate. Looking for more summer car camping tips? Check out our guide to staying cool while car camping here.  5. Smart Meal Planning And Prep Overwhelmed by camp cuisine? Watch our Car Camping 101 episode on camp cooking–it’s like the Cooking Channel, but for road trippers and car campers.  Some outdoor enthusiasts love cooking elaborate meals at camp. Others, not so much. Either way, it’s a smart play to plan and prep meals before you head out.  On the planning front, figure out what recipe or dish you’re going to make ahead of time. Read the recipe carefully, and make sure you don’t skimp on protein–if you’re hiking, biking, or enjoying another high-output outdoor activity, chances are you’ll need all the calories you can get.  As far as prep goes, don’t stress trying to pack individual spices or dry ingredients. You can pre-mix and pre-portion ingredients for easy packing and quick cooking. Making pancakes? Bring a pre-mixed package with all of your dry ingredients. Making tacos? Put your taco seasoning in a reusable container pre-portioned. Sizzling up a stir-fry? Chop veggies at home and pack them in your cooler.  If you want to minimize your camp kitchen time even more, you can whip up entire meals at home so all you need to do is reheat them at camp.  6. Get Foldable Furniture For Comfortable Chilling And Easy Camp Cooking You’ll often find picnic tables at designated campgrounds, but a major benefit of car camping is that you can find free camping almost anywhere. If you are camping in the middle of nowhere, a portable table and chairs (and maybe even a hammock) improve your camp life tremendously.  Our advice? Invest in an easy-to-clean collapsible camp table for a cooking workspace on the go. Don’t forget foldable chairs so you have a comfy seat to enjoy your morning coffee, tuck into a well-earned dinner, or just hang out around the campfire. If you love to read, nap, or just chill and cuddle with your significant other, a hammock is the move. 7. Portable Camping Stoves Are Your New Best Friend Cooking over an open fire is a blast, but chances are that many car camping destinations have fire bans as the weather gets warmer. The right stove will help you cook efficiently regardless of fire bans.  A Jetboil integrated canister stove is ideal for quick boiling, but they aren’t much help if you want to simmer and sauté an elaborate camp meal. If you plan to do more camp cooking, we highly recommend a two-burner stove. Some campers will choose to bring both, using the Jetboil for cranking out coffee and tea and the two-burner for bacon and eggs. No matter what type of stove you bring, make sure you have the right fuel and a spare lighter or box of matches. 8. Light Up Your Campsite A headlamp is an absolute essential and one we won’t camp without. However, it’s not the only way to light up your site. Battery-powered lanterns, like these ones from BioLite, are the perfect way to brighten up your campsite and keep yourself from stubbing your toe at night. Some campers will even deploy camping string lights to set the vibe.  Pro Tip: If you’re using solar-powered lights, like these ones from Luminaid, or charging electronics via a solar panel, position them first thing in the morning and let them charge until the sun goes down. Adjust the positioning throughout the day to maximize sun exposure.  9. Always Carry Cash Carrying cash isn’t super common these days, but most of our state and federal campground systems are still old school. You don’t want to pull up to a remote campground and not be able to pay for a campsite. Chances are there’s probably not an ATM around the block, so be sure to have cash on hand. Also, you might find yourself at a roadside restaurant that doesn’t accept credit cards, so it can’t hurt to have cash stashed.  10. Stay Connected  The best car camping can often be found in BLM land, National Forests, or other wilderness areas. What do these zones all have in common? They’re often remote, beautiful, and far from the realm of cell service.  For safety’s sake, we highly suggest downloading offline maps on an app like OnX or Gaia to help track your positioning. Furthermore, invest in a satellite communication device, like this one from Garmin, to stay in touch with friends and family or call emergency services. ______  Remember To Enjoy The Journey We’re stoked you’re joining the car camping community, and we hope these tips, tricks, and gear recommendations help you get out and get after it. That said, no car camping trip is without bumps in the road–those are to be expected. Just remember: the more you explore, the easier car camping will get. And if you’re looking to learn more, stay tuned to the Luno Journal, where we regularly post articles on all things car camping. Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you on the road, The Luno Crew

Roadmap to Responsibility - June 2024

Roadmap to Responsibility - June 2024 Description: Welcome to Luno’s Roadmap to Responsibility newsletter, where we’ll share highlights of our journey towards a business dedicated to helping people and the planet. In this second edition, we’ll focus on the importance of giving back to your local trails, learn more about our new AIR+FOAM Pro mattress, and checkout how the Luno team has been enjoying Summer! Luno Gear Keeping Access Fund Conservation Teams Comfy on The Road Luno is a proud supporter of Access Fund’s Conservation Teams. Access Fund is a climbing advocacy non-profit that strives to lead and inspire the climbing community toward sustainable access and conservation of the climbing environment. Each year, their Conservation Teams hit the road in their Ram Promaster vans as they travel the country building and restoring trail systems. With Luno being a company dedicated to making life on the road more comfortable, we were excited for the opportunity to outfit the Conservation Teams with some Luno gear.  These gear donations were made possible by our Car[e] Camping Program, Luno’s commitment to donate 3% of profits annually towards initiatives that promote access to the outdoors and/or environmental stewardship. Learn more about how we use 3% of our profits to give back HERE.  Kudos to the Access Fund’s Conservation Teams for all their hard work protecting and building the trails we all love to enjoy!   Volunteering at Smith Rock Group’s Spring Thing  Aligning with our core value of “Act Responsibly & Thoughtfully,” Luno values giving back to our local community and taking care of the natural areas we love to recreate in. This is why a few weekends ago, the Luno team got their hands dirty and joined the Smith Rock Group for a day of trail maintenance. The Smith Rock Group is a local Bend nonprofit committed to preserving the natural beauty of Smith Rock State Park. In 1993 they started the Spring Thing, an annual park clean up event, which has now grown to be the largest single day climber-led park clean-up event in the United States! Check out Luno’s Product Development Associate’s, Lillian Simon, recap of the day:  “So happy I got the chance to participate in this year’s Spring Thing at Smith Rock! Being able to give back to one of my favorite parks and communities through trail work was so rewarding… I even had to go back the next day to admire everyone's hard work! Looking forward to more community volunteer events this Summer!” Join Luno and the Deschutes Upper Watershed Council at the 2024 Deschutes River Clean Up  Local to the Bend area and want to join the Luno Team for a day of environmental stewardship? We have some great news for you! On July 27th, Luno will be hosting a river cleanup site as a part of the 28th annual Deschutes River Cleanup, hosted by the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council.  There will be six different cleanup sites along the Deschutes River, where volunteers will help pull invasive weeds and remove litter from the stream banks. The cleanup sites include La Pine State Park, Farewell Bend Park, Riverbend Park, First Street Trail, Tumalo State Park, and Sunriver. You can learn more about the event here. Introducing Our All-New AIR+FOAM Pro Mattress Earlier this month, we proudly introduced our latest addition to the mattress family: the AIR+FOAM Pro. Not only are we stoked about adding this new type of mattress to our lineup, we’re excited that it’s our first TPU-based mattress – TPU is a material known for its non-toxic, biodegradable, and recyclable properties. At Luno, our commitment to innovation extends beyond comfort; it's about making responsible choices in our designs. Some may even say that we always look to go the extra mile (pun very much intended). Summer Fridays As a company made up of passionate adventurers, Luno recognizes the importance of work-life balance. This is why during the summer months, the Luno team takes part in Summer Fridays – AKA, 4-day work weeks where we take some extra time to enjoy the outdoors, family, and disconnect as much as possible.  Check out some ways the Luno crew has used Summer Fridays to get out here and get after it below! What We’re Reading This Summer  During the holidays, all Luno employees were gifted The Future of The Responsible Company by Yvon Chouinard & Vincent Stanley. Written by Patagonia’s Founder and Director of Philosophy, this book provides guidance on harnessing businesses to promote positive impacts on both people and the planet. It's no surprise that this book has found its way onto the summer reading lists of Luno employees! Thanks for joining us on this pit stop on our Roadmap to Responsibility! If you have any questions or ideas for things you’d like to see from Luno’s journey towards being a business dedicated to improving people and the planet, send us a message.

We used the Luno mattress for a two night outing and it was great. It fit our Ioniq 5 perfectly and provided comfortable support.

The mattress fits perfectly in the back of our Subaru Outback! It sets up in 2 mins and breaks down in 2 minutes. It is super comfortable and comfortably fits 2 people- 5’6” and 5’10”. The customer service at luno is great also. I am very happy with this product and this company. Our friends loved it so much after borrowing it that they got their own!

Amazing! In my eyes, no other word could describes this mattress. I was deployed for work for 30 days away from home. I refused to get a hotel and chose to car camp. I enjoyed every minute of it and saved thousands by car camping. My nights were cozy in 28* temps and my morning wake ups left me wanting to stay in bed (cozy!!). Thank you Luno for making car camping cool again!

This fits perfectly in my Forester!

Answers to the most frequent questions about BlitzBed Sleeping Platfom

Will the BlitzBed hold my weight?

Our recommended weight limit is 275 pounds for single use or 500 pounds combined weight if sleeping two. The aluminum tubing we use is very strong and we have tested it to well above the recommended limit with no issues.

This recommended weight limit is a suggestion and is not based on scientific calculations. Please contact us if you have specific questions about this.

If the bed does break, we will make it right  (read about our TrunkMate Promise! )

How much does the BlitzBed weigh?

My vehicle's seats don't fold down flat. will this still work.

Yes! The BlitzBed was designed to tackle this very problem!

Every kit comes with height adjustable legs so you can raise or lower the sleeping platform to the best height for your vehicle and even angle it if you park your car on a slope.

The bed frame extends into the car and either rests on the folded 2nd row seats, or attaches to support legs that extend to the footwell of the car.

We include 2 sizes of bed supports so you can support the bed at whatever height you want.

Will I hit my head on the roof?

You may have more headroom than you think! We’ve spent a ton of time optimizing our design to best fit your vehicle and maximize the amount of usable space you have while in bed. But at the end of the day, you’re still just sleeping in your car so you’re limited by the amount of available space your car offers.

How does it secure to my trunk?

Most SUV’s and minivans have cargo anchor points in the trunk. Use the included tie down straps to secure it to your trunk floor and prevent it from shifting while driving. If your vehicle doesn’t have cargo anchors, there are generally other places you can attach it to.

How will the bed be supported if I raise it up higher?

We include 2 sizes of supports that rest on your folded seats. The smaller hook is used to support your BlitzBed in the lowest height. The larger hook is used to support your BlitzBed at a taller height.

For precise height control, we recommend purchasing the Upgraded Bed Supports which have adjustable legs that extend all the way down to the footwell.

Learn more about our Bed Supports here .

Thanks to its low profile design, the BlitzBed SUV platform bed maximizes the amount of headroom you have while laying in bed.

The BlitzBed trunk bed lengthens your sleeping area beyond the folded seats so you can stretch out and get a great night’s sleep!

Adjustable legs make it easy to raise the BlitzBed so you can fit all of your car camping essentials underneath.

Fit all of your car camping essentials underneath the bed. Control the height of the bed with adjustable levelling legs.

Technical Specifications

Will the blitzbed fit my vehicle.

Our sleeping platforms have been meticulously tested in hundreds of vehicles to ensure a proper fit.

Use the fit guide to verify your vehicle’s fit. Once verified, you can confidently place your order.

We have 4 different size combinations that allow us to offer a precise one-size-fits-most fitment in your SUV, minivan, or pickup truck.

Our sleeping platforms will fit snugly between your vehicle’s wheelwell arches without contacting them. This usually translates to a 1-3 inch gap on each side of the bed.

Our sleeping platform widths closely mirror many of the common mattress sizes that you find online or at a local REI store.

For precise height control, we recommend purchasing the Upgraded Bed Supports which have adjustable legs that extend to the footwell.

  • Folded volume: 25cm x 22cm x10cm Mattress Spread to Size: length 115-130cm, width 85-90cm

This Heavy Duty inflatable bed is perfect as a back seat car air mattress or SUV mattress. It’s extra durable and creates enough lying down space to accommodate two people ‘romantically’.This suv air mattress comes as a complete kit including the electric car air pump, repair pad, and the glue kit for any accidents along the way.

This inflatable air bed for your car is made with a heavy duty PVC, so you’ll find it’s much more comfortable than regular car air beds. It has a soft feeling throughout, similar to the micro fluff feeling or a microfiber cloth.

car travel beds

  • A universally fitting inflatable air bed for cars
  • Solid build, contains 10 separate air compartments for stability
  • Quick Fill Electric pump and repair pads included
  • Soft PVC ‘fluffy’ texture rather than regular plastic
  • Not recommended for more than 1 person unless you want to get cozy 😉
  • Minor refill required every night (due to the natural leakage of air mattresses)
  • Velvet PVC is very comfortable, but it’s more prone to collecting lint, dust, and fur (if you have a small dog prepare to clean the back seat bed often!)

It’s a solid one piece and a universal fit for your car. The big reason that this is number one is simply because it’s such a solid inflatable car mattress. Thick material, soft touch, and the car mattress itself is actually made of 10 smaller compartments, so it will keep its shape much better. You won’t have a saggy or flimsy mattress anymore!

2. Shelterin Car Camping Air Mattress with Air Pump and Pillows

The Shelterin inflatable travel bed is another best car mattress for the back seat. What separates this particular air bed from most is that it’s actual 3 different pieces. This makes it slightly more adjustable than others, but not necessarily form fitting to the back seat. It easily turns your back seat into a bed, but also has the added comfort of a portable couch! Separate pieces allow you to use it in more situations than the average bed, making it the ideal air bed for camping as well as your car back seat.

For those concerned with style fear not! This particular bed comes in many colors to suit most vehicles as well. It includes the air pump, repair kit, and a pillow! This is a solid mattress, the only reason it didn’t make number one was the heavy duty air bed form fits your car so it stays in place slightly better.

car travel beds

  • Fits 95% of car back seats with its multi piece design
  • Quick to fill and quick to deflate
  • Designed for easy carry when travelling
  • Designed for flexibility and comfort in mind
  • Holds its form even with a 200+ pound adult
  • Durable design capable of being a back seat dog platform (not large dogs however)
  • Two adults would be very cozy
  • Fewer amazon reviews compared to the other portable air car beds
  • Air refills required in a shorter time frame than competitor models
  • Soft material is a magnet for dog hair, so get your lint roller ready!

The best bang for your buck – the Ancheer inflatable car mattress! One on the best car beds on the market right now. Ancheer air bed is made of a high quality PVC material and is often described as feather-like, and while many competitors have similar PVC material, the Ancheer mattress boasts equal comfort and durability for close to half the price of competitor brands.

The included electric bed pump conveniently connects to the car lighter socket (no lugging batteries or dealing with extension cords) and fills the mattress completely in around 2 minutes. The Ancheer car bed comes in 2 separate pieces which when used fits almost every car on the market. Other reviews claim to use it as a minivan bed and an SUV mattress.

The big benefit to this car air mattress is it’s affordable price tag and that it comes in two pieces. So while it fits perfects as a back seat car bed, it also works well as a travel air mattress for camping.

car travel beds

  • ‘Feather-like’ Comfortable PVC material
  • Electric bed air pump included (uses the car lighter socket for power)
  • Fills and deflates in under 2 minutes
  • Universally fits back seats (SUVS, mini vans, and cars)
  • Many positive Amazon reviews (Ancheer car beds are well known)
  • Good for small – mid sized dogs (just make sure their nails aren’t too long)
  • Can be used as a car air mattress or a regular inflatable camping mattress
  • Pump cord is on the shorter end
  • You’ll have to be quick plugging the air hole when it’s full, else you might lose air quickly

4. D&D Tri-fold Futon Foam Mattress for Cars and Vans

D&D Futon Furniture Black Twin Size Shikibuton Trifold Foam Beds 6 x 39 x 75, 1.8 lbs high Density...

  • Color: Black. Filled with high density foam 1.8 pounds.
  • Bed size when folding out: 6" Thick x 39" Wide x 75" Long.

This shikibuton (futon) tri-fold foam truck bed is a fantastic choice of bed for anything with a flat bed to put it on. While not inflatable, this is still a fantastic option for setting up in a large truck bed or the fold down trunk of a hatchback/SUV.

This model comes in three sizes; twin, full, and queen, so it’s easy to pick the best size for your vehicle. The downside here is it takes up much more room than a typical inflatable truck bed and doesn’t form fit to the molds of a truck bed. Although the foam is firm enough for most uneven indentations (that most trucks have), you may find you can feel screws or things underneath more so than you would on an inflatable mattress for trucks.

A lot of the reviews mention this mattress is comfortable enough to use as their home bed! I would compare this mattresses comfort to sleeping on a futon (around IKEA quality if you’re familiar with them).

While not as common, foam car beds are a great alternative to air mattresses and will most likely last a longer time and can take more of a beating. However the trade off is it’s larger carrying size, it’s non-exact backseat fit, and foam picks up dirt easier than most plastic beds.

car travel beds

  • Very versatile, can be used as a mattress in a guest room, cabin, dorm, or truck
  • Folds up for easy portability
  • Fit’s in bed frames since it comes in common sizes
  • No ‘squeaky’ air bed noises
  • Lasts longer and is more durable
  • Not as portable as an inflatable bed
  • Not as form fitting as most other truck camping mattresses
  • Comes quite firm, not able to adjust the pressure
  • Picks up and holds dirt longer

5. PAVONI Inflatable Air Mattress for SUV

PAVONI Car Inflatable Air Camping Mattress Pad – with Electric Mattress Pump, Towel, Repair...

  • SLEEP COMFORTABLY ONROAD — Roll out your legs, unwind and sleep comfortably (take a short nap or sleep...
  • PREMIUM QUALITY DESIGN — Made with the highest quality materials, our inflatable car sleeping mattress is...

The Pavoni is easily the best SUV air mattress currently on the market. With it’s very affordable price tag and value added features it’s a no-brainer if you’re looking for an air mattress for your SUV or van.

It fits most vans and SUV vehicles and is large enough to use as a common tent air bed as well. The Pavoni also comes with an electric air pump included, so it fills up and compacts very quickly. It claims to have 4 separate air rooms in the mattress so it should work with water play if you wanted to use it for that.

car travel beds

  • Fits the full backseat of most SUVS, vans, and hatchback vehicles
  • Comes complete with an electric air pump and other accessories
  • Some Amazon reviews claim the plastic material is thinner than other options

6. Best Memory Foam Camping Mattress for Cars

D&D Futon Furniture Black Trifold Foam Beds 3x27X75 in, Shikibuton High Density Foam 1.8 Pounds

  • Color: Solid Black.
  • Proudly made in USA.

D&D Futon furniture has our favorite overall option for your car mattress. A foam car futon is a great option for those who don’t sleep in their car too often and want something more versatile than your typical inflatable mattress.

The main reason to choose a memory foam car bed over an inflatable one is if you want to use it for regular tent camping or as a guest bed in your home. This tri folding bed is made up of 100% polyester and comes in at only 1.8 pounds. It’s easily the most durable bed compared to our other reviewed models. If you planned on sleeping on your car mattress for more than a week straight this would be your best bet as it can take a beating better than it’s air mattress competition.

Durability aside, it is also one of the most affordable options has the most highly rated reviews on Amazon. This model is easily our pick for the best car camping sleeping pad.

car travel beds

  • More durable than an air mattress
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Highly reviewed
  • Multi-use, great for the guest room
  • Affordable
  • Not form fitting to your vehicles backseat
  • Takes up more room than an inflatable bed

Buying Guide: How to Choose the Best Car Mattress Pad

There’s people who camp, there’s people who glamp, and there’s people who like to stay somewhere in between (sound like you?). Sleeping in your car (or car camping ) is a great way to stay protected against animals or the elements, and thanks to the many inflatable car beds car travel has become an easy and convenient alternative!

It’s important to realize that an inflatable car bed is designed differently from classic camping air mattresses you may or may not be used to seeing, but they’re every bit as comfortable! Depending on how intense of a camper you are you may be fine with just a back seat inflatable car mattress. If you’re a family camper though you’ll want to upgrade to a bed capable of sleeping multiple people, such as “”insert double bed air mattress brand”” . For those of you who are serious campers or want a bit of extra room consider picking up a car tent to add a little more comfort to your travel.

Car air beds are perfect for campers alike because they are generally multi-functional, being able to be used as everything – from a cozy campfire couch to an inflatable pool bed.

car travel beds

Types of Car Beds

Generally there’s two kinds of portable car mattress materials – air beds and memory foam beds. You’re also going to find that 90% of back seat car beds are air mattresses rather than a car memory foam mattress.

There’s two reasons for this;

1. A car air mattress is designed to fit perfectly in your back seat or trunk to maximize your sleeping area by filling in divet’s and

2. Air beds don’t collect dirt and other unwanted materials nearly as easily as foam does.

While memory foam is fantastically comfortable, think about the last time you’ve slept on a portable foam camping mattress. A few inches of foam isn’t quick as comfortable if there’s any uneven ground underneath it. However, there are foam mattresses that are more comparable to futons. These mattresses are quite comfortable, enough so to double as a guest bed in your home. Though these don’t fit in a car quite as well as an air mattress.

So while there’s two car mattress materials, you’ll almost always have a better sleep on the inflatable car beds (and they’re waterproof!).

You’ll also find that the inflated material for car mattresses is slightly thinner than common air mattresses because your seat cushions are generally a soft surface to begin with. If you’re planning on setting up in the back of your truck, a bed liner will make it a warmer and comfier experience. See the best DIY bed liners if you want to install one yourself.

Choosing the Right Size of Beds in Cars

Rear seat beds come in all shapes and sizes, but inflatable car beds are actually universally designed to fill your back seat of your car, truck, SUV or van. Ancheer for example is a great universally fitting back seat air mattress for SUVs.

A car mattress is designed in a unique shape to be form fitting and mold around common car designs. Most have a cut out section to compensate for the console as well as an extrusion to fill the area where a car passengers feet would normally go (giving you a bit more room to stretch out!).

For those of you with slightly larger cars or folding seats, you may want to consider a larger backseat full size mattress. These are ideal for those of you with children, coupling up, or just  looking for a bit of extra space. Full size car beds are also great form fitting beds that are perfect for more than one person or a furry companion.

Truck Air Mattresses – Inflatable or Foam?

These types of inflatable mattresses are usually more heavy duty than your typical rear seat car beds. They form fit to the back cab as naturally as a car bed fits to the back seat. Generally these pair well with the best truck tents to create a luxurious camping/travel experience. They’re very roomy and often have some nifty features included.

Truck foam beds are actually a recommended choice here, as there is a large area in the truck bed for a regular sized mattress. The benefit of a foam truck mattress over an inflatable bed for trucks will be it’s durability and longevity of the product.

Foam or Inflatable SUV Mattresses?

There’s two types of SUV beds you should be considering if you have a mid – large range vehicle size. Car beds for the back seat or a full size car mattress to fill up the whole car (when the passenger seats are folded down). The choice here is generally pretty easy once you know what you’re going for. If you’re looking for a comfortable bed for multiple people you should get the roomier and larger trunk mattress.

Foam SUV beds, like the ones used for larger truck beds, are also ideal in this case. SUVs have the luxury of choice when it comes to backseat vehicle mattresses.

Folding Minivan Mattresses

Folding Van beds are a bit more premium and that shows in the price tag, although there are a few good quality and affordable foam van mattresses available on Amazon. Most people considering foam mattresses or actual mattresses are generally looking for a more long term or permanent mattress solution to add to their camper van conversions.

If you plan to use a bed nightly I would opt for getting the best van mattress available, but if you’re using this as an occasional travel mattress a car air bed or double sized inflatable mattress is great in comfort and on the wallet.

Car Bed Costs

Inflatable travel beds range from 30 dollars to 100 plus, but for the most part the difference in quality isn’t overly noticeable. If you plan on using this once for a festival or occasional late night crashing then a mattress on the lower end will suffice. With a higher price tag you will find the durability and material becomes slightly thicker and smaller features such as included repair kits begin to be included.

The best inflatable car bed is the Ancheer car mattress, coming in at an affordable mid-range price with tons of great reviews and extra little goodies. The best bang for your buck at this time of writing.

If you’re looking for a larger double-bed sized mattress you’ll find they start closer to the 100 dollar price range. Foam car bedding and inflatable bedding generally run around the same price, so depending on your needs you will have the option of either.

Accessories for Air Beds

Alongside your inflatable mattress it’s always good to keep some tools around to make your life a little easier.

Air Mattress Car Charger

The Patch kit – Most air mattresses come with a patch kit, giving you everything you need to easily patch up any holes. If you’re using this as a dog platform bed you will definitely want to keep a few of these patches close at hand! Thankfully patch kits are very affordable and easily found in most stores.

Air Mattress Pump

The Air bed pump – Another must have that’s included with most back seat inflatable beds. You’ll find that these can range in terms of quality and speed. Most electric air pumps reviewed here will fill the bed in two minutes or so, perfect for when you just want to set it up and crash for the night as soon as possible. If you do bring you own, consider picking up a pump that allows you to charge it in your cars lighter socket.

What size mattress fits in a truck bed/car

Most models these days boast about their universal fit and how they are able to fill any cars back seat. This is true, but the key word here is ‘almost’ every car. You’ll want to check the Amazon page for an exact list of cars the ‘don’t’ fit well with.

Lastly, you should consider whether you want your car mattress to be a single piece or multiple pieces. Generally, single piece mattresses fit slightly tighter, allowing a firm fit with little room for movement. 2 Piece car beds also fit very well and are also capable of being a portable camping mattress as well as a car bed. While single piece mattresses are slightly more fitted, the difference here is really negligible, so it really depends on what you’re looking for.

5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Car Mattress

When choosing the best car air mattress you’ll want to keep these main factors in mind.

Comfort – Look for a comfortable PVC exterior. Felt like exteriors not only are soft to the touch, they’ll cut down on loud plastic-y noises classic air mattresses make.

Fit – Air beds for your car are generally universal, but you’ll want to decide whether you  want a firm single fitting piece or a 2 piece set.

Durability – Have a dog or some animal-like small children? You’ll want to make sure you get a durable mattress that can survive a little more of a beating and small scrapes.

Multi-functional – Is this mattress strictly for the car or is it also a camping mattress? You might want to get one that is a great rear seat bed as well as a comfy air couch to chill by the fire.

Accessories – You’ll want a patch kit and an air pump, so why not grab the car air mattress that comes with the whole package. When it comes to car bed air pumps, you’ll want to grab one that uses the car lighter socket for ultimate convenience.

How to Inflate an Air Mattress

Inflating your back seat mattress is incredibly simple. Expect to have your mattress unpacked, inflated, and in place in under 5 minutes. Most mattresses can be filed directly in your car, so no need to worry about fitting a fully inflated mattress through those tiny car doors!

  • Unpack your air car bed and lay it over the back seat of your car/van/suv
  • Plug in the Air pump to your vehicles lighter socket
  • Insert the inflating tube of your air pump into the air mattress opening
  • Turn on the air pump
  • Wait a few minutes while your mattress inflates
  • Add a blanket or two and enjoy a cozy nights rest 🙂

Aside from requiring a lot more gear, traveling with kids can be quite stressful, and in between packing your luggage and investing in a travel stroller , there's little mental energy for anything else. Fortunately, our experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute Parenting Lab have been testing car seats for decades, including the best convertible car seats , rotating car seats and the best booster seats . We test based on safety features, functionality, ease of use and value. Our picks are based on tests done in-Lab by our experts, evaluations from our consumer testers and extensive research.

Head to the end of this guide to find more information on how we test, whether or not you should use a car seat on a plane, what to look for when shopping for the best portable car seats and more. Looking for more to make traveling with kids as easy as possible? Check out our favorite outdoor-ready stroller wagons , the best lightweight strollers and top-rated double strollers .

The Doona car seat is our pick for the best overall car seat and stroller combo and it's one of our past Parenting Award winners. A dedicated fan following backs it up; see its more than 13,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. The Doona makes it easy to switch between car seat and stroller mode in seconds even with your baby strapped inside. In short, you don't need a separate infant car seat and a stroller, because this is both.

"It's the easiest stroller to maneuver through airport security and around an airport terminal," says one tester who's a mom of two young kids. It goes into a rideshare vehicle using the seat belt (no stroller to put in the trunk!). It's also FAA-approved for use in an airplane cabin and fits on most economy airplane seats, which are often about 17 inches wide.

Rachel Rothman , the Good Housekeeping Institute's former Chief Technologist and a mom of three, is a fan of this for travel. But it's important to note that, as well as being pricey, the Doona is only for rear-facing use and for toddlers up to 35 pounds. Toddlers outgrow it typically at age 2. But if you'll travel a lot in those first two years — even if it's just catching Ubers around town — you'll be grateful for the Doona.

Big kids need a bit of help ensuring that the seatbelt is hitting their body just right, so this backless booster gives them that extra height. It's also exceptionally small, lightweight and easy to travel with; you might even keep several in your car's trunk for when you're carpooling other kids.

Because it's backless, it doesn't offer as much support as a highback booster (for that, see the Peg Perego on this list). It is okayed for ages 4 and up as long as they weigh at least 40 pounds and could be great for a quick trip when you don't want to lug something large. This fits into a tote bag!

With its two hideaway cupholders, machine-washable seat cushions and padded armrests, this tucks a lot of features into a (really!) affordable seat. It's no surprise that it has more than 22,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. While it isn't airline-approved — all booster seats require a shoulder belt, which you won't find on an airplane — its compact size makes it incredibly simple to slide into your overhead bin to later use in taxis, Ubers or other vehicles once you get to your destination.

For a little more money there's a TurboBooster LX version that works with LATCH; nice if you'll be keeping this in one car for a length of time.

Got enough to carry already? At 10 pounds, this is the best lightweight convertible car seat for traveling and it won't break the bank. Five harness heights and three buckle locations help customize the seat to your baby or toddler's size, though it's the kind of harness you have to rethread each time you need to change it.

The Scenera can be installed rear-facing for babies and toddlers and forward-facing for preschoolers up to 40 pounds but lacks the cushioning and other comforts, like a recline mechanism, we've come to enjoy in an everyday toddler car seat . Still, with its deep bucket seat, this will keep your tiny passenger comfy enough and car seat compliant when you're traveling and in and out of other people's vehicles. It's especially great as a rear-facing travel option for 2- and 3-year-olds who have outgrown an infant car seat.

You can remove both the cupholder and seat pad for washing. The seat pad can even go in the dryer. The brand claims that three of these seats fit across a back seat and our tests were able to validate that in certain vehicles. It can be installed with the LATCH system or a seatbelt. It's approved for airplane seats and like our best overall pick it fits on most economy seats.

Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120

Viaggio Flex 120

Kids who are at least age 4 and who weigh 40 pounds or more will appreciate the comfort of this belt-positioning booster seat just as much as parents will appreciate its ability to fold down to a fraction of its size.

The Flex 120 has an exceptionally large weight range, functioning for kids up to — you guessed it — 120 pounds. While it's a bit pricier than some other booster options, its ability to compact down makes it perfect for folding up and storing in a bag that you can then gate-check, or even fit into the overhead bin while in-flight. Note that no belt-positioning booster is certified for use in an airplane cabin because they're meant to be used with a car's shoulder belt, not an airplane lap belt. The big kids who fit this are good to use the airplane belt anyway! This is perfect for use in a rideshare, taxi or a far-off relative's vehicle when you land.

Customize this booster to your child by adjusting the headrest, upper backrest, side wings and seat. In addition to being an easy portable car seat, this is another great choice for grandparents or other caregivers who only occasionally drive big kids around because it so easily fits into a car's trunk when not in use.

Graco 4Ever DLX

4Ever DLX

This is larger and heavier than any of our other choices. However, this is the most portable all-in-one car seat that grows with your little one from a rear-facing infant car seat to a backless booster, from 4 to 120 pounds .

Its versatility means that it may be the only car seat you ever have to buy, and if you travel infrequently, you could manage to tote this on a few trips and avoid buying something separate just for travel. It is certified to work on an airplane seat with the harness (so, up to 65 pounds), but it's about 3 inches wider than many economy airplane seats so the fit isn't great; one Reddit user said they put it in the window seat and then just accepted squeezing themselves into the middle-seat position.

While testing, we appreciated how easy this car seat was to install and use, making it pretty difficult to mess up due to user error. We also love how highly adjustable it is, with a six-position recline and a no-rethread harness with 10 possible heights. The easy-to-remove washable seat pads make it simple to clean up after your little one. If you're taking it with you into a rideshare and can't use the LATCH installation system, there's an integrated belt lock off on the back of the seat that helps make seat belt installation as simple as possible.

WAYB Pico Travel Car Seat

Pico Travel Car Seat

This is a pricey option that has a fan following with frequent travelers who travel with a preschooler. It folds down into its own carrying case, which can be worn as a backpack, so you can easily get it through the airport and store it in a hotel. It's got a five-point harness and is meant for kids up to 50 pounds. The brand says it's for kids as young as 2 but because rear-facing is safest and this only faces forward, we would not recommend using it for a child until they are at least age 3, preferably 4.

The Pico does not have side-impact protection and other safety features we want on an everyday car seat, but for travel we agree that this has portability appeal. It also gets knocked in reviews for not being comfortable for long car rides if your child likes to nap, but again, we're putting it on this list for on-the-go families who are in "something is better than nothing" mode, even for short train, bus or van rides.

Our experts appreciate how lightweight this seat is (8 pounds), and that it easily fits even on the smallest economy airplane seat (it's FAA-approved). The seat can either be installed using the LATCH system or the seatbelt in a car or airplane.

Nuna PIPA urbn + TRVL Stroller

PIPA urbn + TRVL Stroller

If you're a city family that doesn't even own a car, there's a big reason to love the PIPA portable infant car seat: It's built to be installed without a base and is exceptionally easy to move between vehicles, including rideshares like Uber.

It's got a built-in rigid LATCH system or alternatively you can use the back seat seatbelt. Plus, the PIPA urbn only weighs 7 pounds, making it one of the lightest infant car seats we know of and an easy one to carry from place to place. The stroller, too, is lightweight at just under 14 pounds and can be folded down using just one hand. The car seat is built to ride on top of the stroller, to get them both through an airport, and we named it our favorite lightweight travel system .

The infant car seat does not have a high weight limit, however. Your baby will outgrow it when they hit 22 pounds or are 29 inches tall, whichever comes first. For some that can mean by their first birthday. But the stroller will stay useful through the preschool years since it has a weight limit of 50 pounds. The car seat is airline-approved and will fit on most economy cabin seats.

How we test the best portable car seats

line break

The Good Housekeeping Institute's engineering and parenting pros have reviewed dozens of car seats over the past five years, including portable car seats . Our Lab experts work with parents to test these car seats on a variety of vehicles of different brands and sizes to ensure that you can find the right car seat for your family.

Each car seat we consider has passed Federal Safety Standards. We perform tests both in the Lab and at home to evaluate each product's safety, ease of installation, stability, ease of adjustments, stroller compatibility and portability. To accomplish this, we set up each car seat in a variety of vehicles and strollers. We evaluate how easy it is to secure the harness as well as how difficult it is to install the car seats. For portable car seats we pay special attention to whether they can be installed without a LATCH system and if they are approved for use in an airplane cabin.

What to look for when shopping for a portable car seat

linebreak

Whether you're going on a trip or often take your child places in a rideshare vehicle, if you need a portable car seat you should consider these things:

✔️ Height and weight limits : All car seats come with minimum and maximum height and weight specifications. To ensure proper seatbelt placement and optimal security, make sure your child fits within those ranges. Once they meet the maximum in either height or weight, it's time to switch. If you have an adjustable car seat that transitions to a booster look at the labels on the car seat, check the user manual or contact the manufacturer so you know when it's time to switch modes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can help you determine the right kind of car seat for your child based on their age, weight and height. That will help you figure out if you can use an infant car seat or if you need a convertible car seat and if you're ready to move on to a booster car seat for travel.

✔️ Weight : The lightest car seats are often the most portable. We get especially excited when we find any that are less than 15 pounds, though a few on our list are heavier than that.

✔️ Easy cleaning : Regardless of age, spills happen. Luckily, like many other car seats, most portable seats offer removable machine-washable seat covers and padding.

✔️ Design : Traditional car seats have a ton of padding, robust side-impact protection and extra features that are important for every day but might be overkill for short trips. The best design for a portable car seat is a slim, streamlined one.

✔️ Ease of installation : Since you will be re-installing the car seat each time you put it in a new car or aircraft, it's important to find a car seat that is so easy to install it won't take more than a few minutes. The easiest car seats for traveling can be installed without a car seat base.

✔️ State laws : Before you bring your car seat across state lines, check state laws to be sure you'll be compliant. Often children through age 7 must be in a child-restraint seat. But if you're heading to Florida for Disney World, the laws there only apply to children through age 5.

Should you bring a car seat on the plane?

linebreak

While it is not mandatory to strap your little one into a car seat on an airplane, many parents opt to do so since it can be both a safer and more comfortable for everyone . It's recommended to do so for children under age 2 by the FAA and AAP. Note: For your child to ride in a car seat, you'll need to buy them their own plane ticket so they're guaranteed to have the space. If your baby under age 2 is flying as a free "lap baby" you are not guaranteed space for your car seat.

Before you bring a car seat onboard, check that it has an FAA-approved sticker. It's also a good idea to bring along your car seat manual to help ensure that you're properly installing the seat on the aircraft. There are helpful videos on YouTube, too, that show how to buckle a car seat in with a lap belt. (This one from the FAA shows how to install a forward-facing car seat on a plane .) Watch some before your trip!

The average airline seat is about 17 inches wide and measures 30 inches from the back of the seat to the seat in front of you — but size can vary depending on which airline you are flying. Because of this, it's best to pick a narrow, compact car seat. Infant car seats fit better than most convertible car seats, though we find that the Cosco choice on our list generally fits well.

For those who are traveling with a car seat who don't plan to use it while on the plane, many airlines will check the car seat or booster seat for free at the check-in desk or at the gate. It might be a good idea to purchase a travel bag to fit it in, to help avoid damage.
