Boatloads of business as National Walleye Tour opens competition season in Port Clinton

PORT CLINTON ― The boats started pulling out at 7 a.m. Thursday for the start of the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s National Walleye Tour, officially beginning the Outdoor Team Works professional competitive walleye fishing season.

For the first time, Port Clinton is the site for the opening event for the professional national tour, which ends in September.

Jim Barton, owner of Lake Donuts, on Jefferson Street, just off the water, almost didn’t take the bait when asked what doughnuts were catching anglers.

“Apple fritters are always a favorite, and they were probably also the favorite with the anglers,” Barton said. “There is definitely a lot of traffic that you wouldn’t normally see, which is awesome.”

Mayor Mike Snider echoed the significance of the opening contest of the tour taking place in Port Clinton.

“It reinforces the fact that we are the walleye capital of the world, if this many professional fishermen want to come and ply our waters here. Economically, it’s fantastic. This is obviously the beginning of the summer season with the fishing population coming into town. The exposure we’re getting, as a community, is spectacular,” Snider said. “As I’ve gone around town, to the different restaurants, gas stations, and whatnot, you see these folks everywhere. You see it’s a tremendous boost to our local economy. It’s bringing in extra money by the boatload, multiple boatloads.”

The National Walleye Tour has 141 boats competing in Port Clinton Thursday and Friday in a pro-co format. Each two-person team features a professional angler and co-angler.

Fans lined up on the Jefferson Street pier to see off the boats.

“We live here and we’ve been watching everything and following everything all week,” said Kim Palmer, who lives in Port Clinton. “We didn’t want to miss the start of the competition. We’re really intrigued by it.”

She was excited to see the competition boats, but also the anglers and their support teams in the city where she lives.

“This is so good for the community, it really is. We’ve been watching all the fishermen visiting all the local restaurants and all the hotels, besides the fact that it’s drawing national attention to our town. It’s so cool,” Palmer said.

City Councilwoman Beth Gillman explained the lead-up to the competition.

“They have been here for as much as 10 days. They come into the area and stay and scout it out. Then there have been people who come ahead of that, so this is a big deal for Port Clinton. It’s a great press opportunity. They’ve been in our restaurants and our businesses,“ Gillman said. “They’ve been looking at the waters and getting a feel for the lake. Every body of water is different to fish. Then they talk about the size of our fish. Lake Erie has bigger fish. It’s going to be a great tournament and it’s a great way to kick off the season.”

The first prize for professional winner is $15,000 and a 2024 Ranger 620 FS Pro boat and motor package, valued at $99,550. The co-angler first prize is $7,500.

The top 25 places will get a cash prize, and many will receive additional prizes from the various sponsors.

The total weight of both days’ fish determines the winner.

Chamber of Commerce President Nicole Kochensparger commented on the haul of prizes.

“There is over $300,000 in cash and prizes to the winning teams. They have prizes for everything, from the sponsors on their boats, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, Progressive, whether or not they have a certain motor in their boat, and many other things,” Kochensparger said.

This is also an unusual type of tournament, at least for Ottawa County.

“I’ve hosted other tournaments with this tournament director, so I’m very familiar with how tournaments work, but this is on a much bigger scale. You’ve got Bass Pro. You’ve got Cabela’s and Progressive here. So this is a much stricter tournament, and the pro-co is different. The not knowing who you are fishing with is different,” she explained.

The professional is assigned a co-angler each day.

“The pro got a text message last night, of who their partner is, and they will get another text message tonight, telling them who their partner is tomorrow. So there’s a professional and a co-angler, who is not a professional. That is the only thing different, that I’ve never seen in a tournament before,” Kochensparger said.

The Chamber of Commerce and Main Street board have worked on bringing the event to the city for more than a year.

PORT CLINTON, Ohio — A crowded field of 142 pro and co-angler teams raced all around Lake Erie in the Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s National Walleye Tour (NWT) opener on April 18-19, but they couldn’t topple the clear favorite, John Hoyer of Keosauqua, Iowa.

Hoyer has been relying on superb sonar skills to find trophy walleye, and to cast to lures to feeding fish. His two-day limit of 10 walleye weighed a whopping 69.13 pounds, beating Hunter Nitti (64.10 pounds) of Rosemount, Minnesota, and Ryan Buddie (64.05 pounds) of Amherst.

The winner of the last three NWT championships, Hoyer added to his impressive winnings by taking home a prize package totaling $116,926 that included a new Ranger 620FS boat. Nitti took home $23,643, while Buddie won $20,645.

What had to be most frustrating for the the field was that despite rough waters, many anglers ran many miles from Port Clinton — including to the Detroit River and the Cleveland shoreline — in search of clean water and walleye eager to bite.

Hoyer did not.

“I found some fairly clean water around the cans, and focused on that,” said Hoyer. Facing gale force winds over two days of practice fishing, Hoyer said he was lucky to find fishable waters and walleye about 10 miles from the Portage River starting line, drifting along the marker buoys off Camp Perry.

Lots of other tournament anglers were trying to copy Hoyer’s Forward Facing Sonar technique that reveals walleye swimming ahead of his Ranger fishing boat, then cast to the biggest fish he can find he marks with his sonar fish-finding unit. His preferred lures included shallow-diving jerk baits and swim baits, a jig matched with a plastic fish body.

National walleye tournaments continue: Lake Erie’s record-setting walleye population makes it a favorite place to host big walleye tournaments, especially early-season events. It is the reason the Cabela’s National Team Championship will drop anchor on the Black River in Lorain on May 9-11. The daily takeoff will be at 6:45 a.m. and weigh-ins to be held at Black River Landing in Lorain starting art 3 p.m.

“We’re already seeing a lot of the tournament fishermen on site, and we expect a lot of trophy walleye coming to the scales,” said Craig Lewis at Erie Outfitters in Sheffield Lake.

Steelhead trout run winding down: Fishermen continue to prowl the Northeast Ohio rivers and streams for steelhead trout, but the run is almost over. Anglers are still catching some of the big trout in the rivers, but most are done spawning and slowly working their way back to Lake Erie to feed and recover from the rigors of the spawn.

A lot of smaller rainbow trout have been released in recent weeks in the East Branch of the Rocky River and Wallace Lake in Berea, as well as Shadow and Ledge lakes in the Cleveland Metroparks.

Be kind to the steelhead smolts: The Ohio Division of Wildlife’s Castalia State Fish Hatchery trucks have been pouring small steelhead trout “smolts” into the Northeastern Ohio steelhead streams, including Thursday into the lower Cuyahoga River for the very first time.

Anglers should carefully handle the yearling 6-to-9-inch fish, which are illegal to keep. If fishermen are hooking a lot of the small trout, change fishing locations rather than risk injuring the youngsters.

Smallmouth bass are invading: While steelhead trout are heading back to Lake Erie, smallmouth bass are heading up the rivers to spawn in very good numbers, although this week’s cold snap has slowed them down a bit. A lot of trophy bass have been checked by Cleveland Metroparks fisheries workers.

Guide Jeff Liskay of Avon Lake recommends casting small, square-billed crank baits for smallmouth bass, as well as Ned Rigs and small jigs and twister tails.

Bay’s Edge Open returns to traditional lures: While most tournament walleye anglers are trolling these days to cover lots of Lake Erie waters and hook trophy fish, the Lake Erie Walleye Trail’s Bay’s Edge Open in Port Clinton on Sunday had plenty of appeal for old-timers. The tournament limited anglers to traditional drift-and-cast fishing, or jigging lures.

Capt. Joe Gibson’s Team NIM No. 2 won the event and $4,700 with a limit of five walleye weighing 29.83 pounds. Team C’est La Fish was second (29.98 pound, $1,700) was second, and Team NIM was third (28.14 pounds, $1,000) was third,

Walleyes are worth their weight in gold: Outdoors column

I am not big on proclaiming the best or the greatest of anything.

Not the best or greatest football or basketball player, the best or greatest restaurant, the best or greatest shotgun, or best or greatest movie.

I used to be that way, but not in a while. I finally figured out that if I love something or someone, you don’t have to. And vice versa.

It doesn’t matter.

For example, I loved watching former Atlanta Falcons running back William Andrews. I’m betting most don’t remember him. I do, because he hit the hole like a bundle of dynamite, ran like a wild horse, and was a very good receiver, too.

He put the fear of God into defenders. He had several terrific seasons, then was badly injured. He played tight end for a year, then was done.

Andrews is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but to me he is an all-time great. As the Roman’s said, “De gustibus.” There is no accounting for taste.

This idea goes for fish on the table, too. For many decades, walleyes – also known as yellow pike, blue pike, pike perch, and pickerel (in Canada) – were a huge Friday tradition in many parts of Upstate New York.

That was especially true in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area, where it seemed every tavern and restaurant – and there was one on every other corner – advertised pike dinners each Friday and welcomed scores of diners each week.

There are other favorite fish – perch, bluegills, brook trout, haddock, catfish. You might prefer one of them to all the others. Great. Still, none seem to generate the devotion that walleyes do, even today.

A plate of walleye fillets still is worth its weight in gold.

That’s why New York State spends the money to produce many thousands of these fish for planting in waters across the state, and why many thousands of anglers will be out on May 1 trying for their limits. The annual egg-taking program at the Oneida Fish Cultural Station – the Constantia Fish Hatchery – was completed earlier this month, part of the effort to keep walleyes available for many years into the future.

Bill Evans, the longtime hatchery manager, said his crew began setting nets on March 20 and brought in the first walleyes the next day. As many as 18 people worked to handle 11,593 adult walleyes and took more than 262 million eggs through April 5.

The egg-taking came earlier than usual. Evans said that was anticipated, and that the run seems to be coming earlier each year. Walleyes were in tributary creeks a week before the season ended March 15, and Evans said no one could remember that happening before. (We saw several photos of limit catches taken during that time.)

Earlier runs don’t necessarily mean earlier hatching and stocking, however, because the water often will stay cool. Evans said that doesn’t appear to be the case this year.

In any event, there will be plenty of walleyes available for stocking across the state. Once restricted to the Great Lakes, the Niagara and St. Lawrence rivers, and the Allegheny River, they can now be found in 140 lakes and rivers in New York. Lake Erie’s fabulous walleye fishery is based on natural reproduction, but most others are supplemented by fish from Oneida.

You can catch walleyes almost anywhere now, including Oneida Lake itself, Lake Delta, Canadarago Lake, Otsego Lake, the Chenango and Susquehanna rivers, Chautauqua Lake, and most of the Finger Lakes.

Again, I am not sneering at panfish or trout or any of the above-named species, freshwater and saltwater. I think they all are terrific, and I will fight you hard for the last fillet on the plate – unless you are way bigger than I am. I wish I could try them all on a regular basis, kind of rotating them.

We should remember that New York State maintains fish consumption advisories and that recent research says all fish contain lifetime, not-terribly-healthy chemicals. Not to scare you, but four meals a month of fish caught in New York is the maximum recommended.

It’s one meal a month for pregnant women, children, and certain other groups. I know there are plenty of people who go way, way beyond that, and I suspect the state is being conservative on these numbers, but still. the advisories are worth paying attention to.

Those e advisories recently have been updated and restyled, and they are kind of depressing. For example, it is recommended that you eat no more than one meal a month of walleyes longer than 19 inches.

That information can be found here on the Department of Environmental Conservation web site: https://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/outdoors/fish/health_advisories/regional/statewide.htl .

There also is a list of advisories for specific waters across the state. For example, for many years, it has been recommended that you eat no trout or white suckers taken from Sauquoit Creek between the silk mill dam in Chadwicks downstream to the Mohawk River. Advisories on specific waters can be found by county at https://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/outdoors/fish/health_advisories/by_county.htm.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and mercury are the contaminants most often cited in advisories. PCBs are linked to developmental problems in children, and mercury is implicated in damage to brain function, and problems of the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. Sorry to spoil your appetite. None of this makes me want to stop eating walleyes or any of the other fish named above. Just not in high quantities.

Locals among Outdoorsmen Hall of Fame honorees

The New York State Outdoorsmen Hall of Fame will induct nine new members Sunday, including five local people.

Tim Furner, Michael Kochanowski, Environmental Conservation Officer Steve Lakeman, Dick Trost, and the late Bill Wheatley will be honored at the annual banquet at Theodore’s Restaurant in Canastota.

Furner organized the Madison County Strutters affiliate of the National Wild Turkey Federation and has mentored many women and youngsters in hunting. Kochanowski is a long-time officer of the Cassety Hollow Rod and Gun Club who has volunteered in a variety of outdoor programs. Lakeman, a longtime ECO in Oneida County, has mentored at women’s and youth turkey and goose hunts for many years, and is a long-time hunting education instructor. Trost was a tour guide at the Oneida Fish Cultural Station in Constantia for more than 25 years and was the president of the Vernon Rod and Gun club for many years. Wheatley was president of the Sauquoit Creek Fish and Game Club for 20 years and was a leader in the annual cleanup day on the creek and the club’s wood duck house project.

John Bianco passes on

John Bianco died recently at age 88.

Bianco was one of the early influences in my flyfishing career, more than 50 years ago. He loved the sport, for sure. He helped me out in many ways, and he did the same for many others.

I don’t think we fished together, but he let us in on some good stuff. That included a great spot for shad fishing on the Delaware River. The exact right spot, really. Bob Lewis and I went there, and we got into a couple of those rockets.

Thank you, John, for helping us enjoy and value a lifetime on the water. Rest in peace.
