How harris-walz bus tour can help the candidates connect with voters.

In November 2019, then-Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden began an eight-day bus tour ... [+] across Iowa. (Photo by Joshua Lott/Getty Images)

Tomorrow’s bus tour through parts of Western Pennsylvania by Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz will be an opportunity for them to connect with voters in a more personal way that rallies at stadiums and other large venues can’t match.

Business leaders should take note of the efforts by the two running mates to inject a more personal touch into what’s become a frenetic race for the White House. Getting closer—literally—to their audiences can help politicians and corporate executives strengthen their image, credibility, and power of their messages.

Creating An Image

Bus tours have important advantages and benefits for presidential and other candidates. They can help make politicians appear more approachable, relatable, and conversational then they would otherwise come across when giving speeches in auditoriums or sports arenas.

Campaign bus tours provide news organizations with good visuals that can result in more news coverage about candidates.

“Bus tours are a staple of [a] campaign season for good reason—in addition to being fun, serving as a rolling billboard and photo opportunity for the candidate or issue, they offer unparalleled immersion into a community or region,” Abbey Watson , who worked in the Obama administration and on different political campaigns, commented in an email message.

Visuals are as important on the campaign trail as a candidate’s message.

“The [bus[ format gives local voters and media significant exposure to the campaign and a great visual that stands apart from the usual rally set up,” Watson observed.

‘Easier To Plan’

“Bus tours are a great way for candidates to tour the major media markets in a swing state. Bus tours can be logistically and financially easier to plan than a tour of a state using a plane. It's easier for local candidates to 'hop on' and 'hop off' for a day or two as well,” Megan Sweeney , a former communications director of the Pennsylvania Republican Party, noted in an email interview.

Political candidates don’t always have to be on the bus though in order for a bus tour to be successful.

"There are times when the candidate doesn't even need to be on the bus for a stop to make the local news. A campaign bus rolling into a smaller market with surrogates is an easy way to reach voters who are often overlooked and gain a headline in a local newspaper,” Sweeney noted.

Challenges And Downsides

But there can be some downsides to this way of campaigning for votes.

“Bus tours are the most challenging event format for a campaign—they take all the typical requirements of producing a rally or other event and combine them with logistics of transporting the candidate, their staff and security,” according to Watson.

There are also security and other considerations to take into account when candidates go on the road by bus.

“Like with any campaign event, it's important to be prepared for counter protests. That's why it's so important to choose a spot for the campaign stop that's secure and alert local authorities as soon as possible,” Sweeney cautioned.

But bus tours are nothing new—Democratic and Republican presidential and other candidates have used the tactic during their races for the White House over the years. They include President Bill Clinton (1996), North Carolina Democratic Senator John Edwards (1996), Arizona Republican Senator John McCain (2000), President George W. Bush (2004) , Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney (2012), President Donald Trump (2020) and President Joe Biden (2020) .

As a whistle-stop campaign train historian, I’ve documented hundreds of politicians over the past 185 years who connected with voters from the back of trains at railroad stations—and by buses. For decades, the trains were the most efficient and effective ways for presidential candidates to connect with voters in small towns and the large metropolitan areas. That is, of course, until buses and plane travel became more effective and cost-efficient for the candidates.

A Bridge Between Two Tactics

Republican presidential nominee Thomas Dewey is believed to be the first national candidate to stump for votes by bus in 1948. It was, in retrospect, a bridge between two campaign travel tactics—trains and planes.

One politician—Lee Dreyfus, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Wisconsin, combined buses and trains when he campaigned in 1978 across the state in an old school bus that was converted to look like a campaign train.

Are More Bus Tours In Store?

“A bus tour is about as close to ‘retail politics,’ like in the early primaries, as a presidential campaign can afford to get in the three month sprint from the conventions to Election Day,” Michael Montgomery , a political scientist and lecturer in the Department of Health and Human Services at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, said in a statement.

The route of future bus tours by this year’s presidential candidates or their running mates could depend on various factors.

“I can't imagine either campaign will embark upon a truly national bus tour. I would, however, expect to see something like it from both campaigns—probably built around the VP nominees—in at least the more densely populated…battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Georgia. Nevada and Arizona are obviously also in play but I'm not sure their geography really lends itself to this particular way of campaigning,” Montgomery concluded.

Getting Closer To Business Audiences

Business leaders do not have to emulate politicians by going on bus tours. They could, however, consider other ways to get closer to their audiences and stakeholders, such as showing up in person at meetings instead of appearing via Zoom calls, greeting employees at their offices, or talking with workers on factory floors.

That kind of personal touch could help bridge the distance between those who work in the corner office and company employees.

It would be the political thing to do.

Amtrak's New Orleans-to-Mobile rail line clears final construction hurdle

Passengers board an Amtrak train heading to New Orleans from Atlanta on Nov. 23, 2016. The federal government sued Norfolk Southern railroad on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, over chronic delays for Amtrak between New York and New Orleans.

Construction of a key Amtrak station in downtown Mobile, Alabama will begin after the project received its final stamp of approval from city councilmembers on Monday, marking a major step forward for the return of passenger rail along the Gulf Coast.

Mobile councilmembers approved a three-year, $3 million funding agreement to construct and operate a new Amtrak platform downtown. The deal includes funding from the city and the Alabama Port Authority and sets the stage for utility relocation work to immediately begin.

Other cities along the route, including New Orleans, have already agreed to host the line, which has been offline since Hurricane Katrina. Mobile’s decision is the final piece in a puzzle for the route’s revamp, said Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson.

“We believe it's a win-win, win-win situation,” Stimpson said. “We look forward to the day that Mobilians can go to New Orleans on the train and that New Orleans can come to Mobile.”

Once it’s up and running, Amtrak will operate twice-daily service between the two cities. It will include stops in Biloxi, Gulfport, Pascagoula and Bay St. Louis.

Amtrak hopes to have the route online in time for the Super Bowl in February 2025, but that’s dependent on city permitting and construction schedules, said Knox Ross, chairman of the Southern Rail Commission.

Passengers board an Amtrak train heading to New Orleans from Atlanta on Nov. 23, 2016. The federal government sued Norfolk Southern railroad on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, over chronic delays for Amtrak between New York and New Orleans.

“There are still unknowns as far as the construction part of it goes,” Ross said. “But this opens up a whole new tourism market for New Orleans and the Mississippi Coast.”

Proponents believe the train will bring hundreds of millions of dollars in new tourism spending annually, and will create 45 full-time train operating jobs in Louisiana.

But critics, including several Mobile city councilmembers, have voiced concerns about the rail line’s long-term financial sustainability. As part of Monday’s agreement, the city put an expiration date on its financial support. That means rail proponents will still need to find a long-term funding source after the initial three years.

“The city accepts no responsibility for funding the line after the first three years,” said Mobile Councilman Joel Daves. “If the proponents of the rail service want it to continue after that time, they're going to have to go to someone else for the money.”

The New Orleans-Mobile connection comes as advocates hope to expand passenger rail throughout the Gulf South region. Louisiana’s Department of Transportation and Development is currently studying the feasibility of adding passenger rail between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

New Orleans' Louis Armstrong International Airport is also working with the Federal Railroad Administration to add an Amtrak stop.

That route is still years away, said Ross, but the pieces are coming together.

“That one is not as real as Mobile to New Orleans, but there's a lot of work being done,” Ross said.

World's largest steam engine 'Big Boy' to visit Oklahoma on US tour: See the schedule

Portrait of Cheyenne Derksen

This fall one of the largest and most historic steam engines in the world will speed through the Sooner State as part of a tour across America.

Union Pacific No. 4014, better known as "Big Boy," will start its 2024 tour on Aug. 28 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and will work its way across nine states, including Oklahoma in October.

According to a press release, 25 Big Boys were built during World War II, but only 8 survived. No. 4014 is the only one still in operation and remains the world’s largest operating steam locomotive. It was retired in 1961, having traveled more than 1 million miles.

Big Boy was put in a museum after retirement and, in 2013, the railroad bought back the unit to restore it. It toured the country for months starting in May 2019 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad’s completion. Though first derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Big Boy took a second tour in 2021.

Big Boy train schedule: Whislestops in Oklahoma

According to Union Pacific's train schedule, Big Boy will reach Oklahoma in October. It will leave Fort Worth, Texas, and arrive in Oklahoma on Oct. 13 for a stop in Durant, then the train will stop in Muskogee and Claremore on Oct. 14 before departing for Kansas.

Sunday, Oct. 13

  • 8 a.m.: Depart Fort Worth, Texas
  • 1:15 p.m.: Arrive Durant, Oklahoma
  • 1:45 p.m.: Depart from Durant at Louisiana St. Crossing

Monday, Oct. 14

  • 11 a.m.: Arrive at Muskogee, Oklahoma
  • 11:30 a.m.: Depart from Okmulgee St. Crossing
  • 1:15 p.m.: Arrive at Claremore, Oklahoma
  • 1:45 p.m.: Depart from Florence Ave. Crossing

Union Pacific officials remind spectators to stand at least 25 feet back from the tracks at all times, and they urge viewers never to trespass on railroad property, including tracks and train yards.

Price: From $94 per person Duration: About 11 hours

This tour will show you the best of the West Rim, including the glass-bottomed Grand Canyon Skywalk bridge (for an added fee). No matter which option you choose, previous travelers say you will enjoy this tour — especially the expert guides, who they describe as both informative and entertaining.

Good to know: Because it's closer to the Las Vegas desert, this side of the Grand Canyon is the warmest year-round, with hot and dry summers, mild shoulder seasons, and occasional snowfall in the winter.

Price: From $119 per person Duration: About 13 hours

Previous travelers commend the tour guides and drivers, noting they are both knowledgable and pleasant.

Good to know: Visitors who are looking to experience the wildlife native to the area (such as coyotes and bighorn sheep) often choose the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, which is home to more animal species than the West Rim.
