Retirement Plan

Charles W. Ballance ’57 Bell Society member since 2014

Charles W. Ballance ’57 of Smyrna, Ga. came to Peddie School in 1953 from Winston Salem, N.C.

At Peddie, he was a campus tour guide in the Gold Key Society, member of the football and swim teams and sang in Choir and Glee Club. Charlie remembers his friendship in Trask Hall with classmate and current Trustee Emeritus Mike Armellino ’57, whose 20 years of service to Peddie was inspiring to him.

Fortunately for us, this friendship and memories of teachers such as the late mathematics “master” David Kiviat ’42 led Charlie to designate the school for a percentage of his IRA and investment accounts. In 2014, after receiving the annual letter from Mike as class gift planning chair, Charlie became the seventh member of the Class of 1957 to join the Bell Society.

The retired owner of the Ballance Group, a fundraising consulting company, Charlie said: “I’m proud of how far my class has come. Some of us were from humble beginnings. It meant a lot to me that our teachers believed in us. My designations for Peddie are my way of saying thank you for the friends and faculty who have had an immeasurable and positive impact on my life.”

Important year-end gift deadlines and reminders for 2023

Below are important year-end deadlines and reminders for making your 2023 gift. Of special note, Peddie offices will be closed for the holidays from Friday, December 22 until Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

Gifts by credit card

Credit card gifts made online must be completed by Sunday, December 31 at 11:59 p.m. to receive a 2023 tax receipt. To make your gift online, go to peddie.org/give .

Gifts by check

If you mail a check via USPS, the envelope must be postmarked on or before December 31 to receive a 2023 tax receipt. The postmark date is used as your gift date. This year, December 31 is a Sunday and many post offices will be closed.

Please make your check payable to “The Peddie School” and mail it to: The Peddie School, Office of Alumni & Development, 201 S. Main St., Hightstown, NJ 08520.

Gifts by stock or wire transfer

Stock and wire transfers can take 1-5 business days and some brokers require up to 10 days. Transfers must be received into Peddie’s account on or before close of business Friday, December 29 to receive a 2023 tax receipt; this year, the last business day of 2023 is December 29. Check with your personal broker for their institutional deadlines required to complete a transaction. Stock transfer instructions can be found here and wire transfer instructions can be found here .

Gifts by IRA Charitable Rollover

Gifts using Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) for individuals 70½ or older must be processed by your retirement fund administrator with a postmark by December 31, 2023. Please check with your retirement fund administrator for their deadline for processing a QCD for 2023.
