This page covers information for newcomers on Canada’s Permanent Resident (PR) Card, including how to avail one as a newcomer to Canada, how to replace your card, what to do if your PR Card expires while you are out of Canada, and more.

A Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) is an identification document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It includes a person’s photo and proof of their PR status. Once a person is granted PR status, and completes an official landing in Canada, they can avail their PR Card. The card serves as a valid travel document when entering Canada, and is typically valid for five years, though in very rare cases it may only be valid for one year. It is advised that all permanent residents obtain their PR card to easily prove their legal status, as it was introduced in 2002 as an alternative to the use of printed immigration documents to do so.

You need a valid permanent resident (PR) card to prove you’re a permanent resident when you return to Canada from another country. Read on to find out what to do if your PR card expires while you are outside of Canada.

IRCC seeks to maintain a service standard of roughly one month (30 days) of processing time for new PR cards—though this can fluctuate depending on circumstances that may impact IRCC’s ability to process cards within that time frame.

Similarly, the department seeks to renew or replace lost PR cards within roughly two months (60 days). You can check the latest processing times for PR cards through IRCC’s online processing time tool .

As previously mentioned, most PR cards come with a validity of up to five years, however occasionally they may be given a validity of only one year. Importantly your PR status does not expire along with your PR Card—it is simply necessary to renew your card to continue to prove your valid PR status in Canada.

When your PR card expires you can no longer use it as a travel document, which can be especially impactful for those returning to Canada from abroad. PRs are advised to apply for a renewal of their PR card within six months of expiry.

Your PR card is not a PR permit in Canada. That is to say that the length and validity of your PR card doesn’t determine how long you will be a PR for in Canada. The document is only a proof of status identifier, it is not meant to describe the nature and length of your stay in the country.

However, there is one important way that PR cards can function like a PR permit—they are needed to enter Canada during international travel. Upon entering a Canadian international port of entry, or border, PRs will be required to show their PR Card to prove their status for valid entry before they are allowed to enter Canada again. Read on to find out what to do if you are outside of Canada when your PR card expires.

As the name suggest, Permanent Residence is supposed to be permanent. This is why PRs in Canada are afforded many of the same rights and privileges as Canadian citizens. Losing PR status is not an automatic process, and needs to be voluntarily done , even if you have not met the physical presence requirements that are needed to maintain your status and apply for Canadian citizenship.

The main benefit of getting your PR card is the ability to prove your status as a PR in Canada, and to travel to Canada from abroad without restriction or hinderance.

As a PR in Canada, you have the ability to:

  • Live and work anywhere in Canada;
  • Access universal healthcare and social services;
  • Sponsor your family members to travel to, and even live in Canada;
  • Access free education for your children;
  • Transition to Canadian citizenship once eligibility requirements are met; and
  • Access more expansive rights and freedoms in Canada than temporary residents.

You do need a PR card to travel back to Canada, as the card is used as an official status document in Canada.

If you are a permanent resident whose PR Card has expired while outside of Canada, you can apply to receive a Permanent Residence Travel Document (PRTD). A PRTD is an official temporary document that proves your PR status in Canada—it can be used (once) to provide proof to travel companies and border officials that you are able to travel to Canada as a PR in the absence of your PR card. This document is temporary, and largely exists for the sole purpose of aiding Canadian PRs whose PR Card has expired while they are abroad.

Importantly, if you do not have a valid PR card, nor a PRTD, and are planning to travel to Canada as a PR, you may be unable to board your flight, train, bus, boat (or other means of commercial travel) to Canada.

For their first PR card (upon flying to and landing in Canada), new PRs will not need to apply to receive their document. After new PRs declare their address in Canada upon passing border customs (or updating IRCC’s address tool on their current address), they will be automatically mailed their first PR Card in roughly one month of landing.

  • Download the application package available at IRCC’s website. This package has all the necessary forms that must be filled out. If you are applying to renew your PR Card, make sure to include your expired document with your application. A document checklist is also available so you reference all needed documents;
  • Pay your application fees online—to complete this, you will need a PDF reader, a printer, valid email address, and a credit or debit card. Once you pay make sure to print your receipt and include it with your application; and
  • Submit your application—once all necessary steps are completed, you will need to send your application to the Case Processing Center in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Note that there are two different addresses depending on whether you are sending your application by mail, or by courier.

Under certain circumstances IRCC will choose to expedite processing of a PR Card based on certain factors of the applicant’s situation. To qualify for urgent processing of your PR Card, you must be travelling within the next three months due to:

  • A job opportunity;
  • Your own serious illness;
  • The death of a family member;
  • Work related to your current job; and/or
  • The serious illness of a family member.

Even if you qualify for urgent processing, IRCC cannot guarantee that they will be able to renew or replace your PR card in time.

As a general rule for travel to Canada, all commercial carriers require Canadian Permanent Residents to show their PR Card before boarding, in addition to the Canadian Border Service Agency (CBSA) requiring a status-proving document (like a PR Card) for all international travellers at any Canadian Port of Entry.

Canadian PRs, who are outside of Canada, and not in possession of a Canadian Permanent Resident Card, may apply at a Canadian Immigration Visa Office for a Travel Document that will enable them to be transported back to Canada by a commercial carrier.

Before issuing a Travel Document, the Canadian Immigration Visa Officer must be able to confirm, from the documents submitted, the identity of the applicant and that the applicant was once a Canadian Permanent Resident. In addition, the Canadian Immigration Visa Officer must be satisfied that the applicant has complied with the residency obligations of Canadian Permanent Residents.

  • Canada Permanent Resident (PR)

Any person wishing to enter Canada’s borders must possess a valid travel document. Canadian permanent residents are able to use their permanent resident card (PR card) in order to enter the country. However, if a permanent resident does not have a valid PR card and needs to enter Canada, they may be eligible to apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD).

Generally, PRTDs are valid for a single entry to Canada, allowing a permanent resident to enter the country before obtaining a new PR card. A permanent resident may only apply for a PR card from inside of Canada, so the PRTD is often necessary to facilitate entry to Canada. A person may apply for a permanent resident travel document if they meet the following criteria:

  • They are a permanent resident of Canada;
  • They do not have a valid PR card showing PR status;
  • They are outside Canada, and;
  • They will return to Canada by airplane, boat, train, or bus.

If a person meets the criteria for a PRTD, they can submit an application. Please note that upon submission of the application, a visa officer will review it to ensure it is complete and that the applicant has met their residency obligations. If the applicant has failed to meet their residency obligations, then their status as a permanent resident may fall into jeopardy. Please note that immigrants from countries requiring a visa to enter Canada who have received their confirmation of permanent residence (COPR) should be issued a travel visa with their COPR. This travel visa allows them to travel to a Canadian Port of Entry (POE) to enter Canada where they can begin the process of obtaining their PR card. It is not necessary for a newly confirmed permanent resident to obtain a PRTD, as the above-mentioned travel visa will be issued to those immigrants who require it.

Can a Canadian Permanent Resident Travel to USA? Your Guide.

As a Canadian permanent resident, you may wonder if you can travel to the USA. The good news is that Canadian permanent residents are generally allowed to enter the United States for tourism, business, or other purposes. However, there are specific entry and exit requirements that you need to be aware of before planning your trip. Let’s explore the details.

Key Takeaways:

  • Canadian permanent residents can travel to the USA for tourism, business, or other purposes.
  • There are specific entry and exit requirements that need to be met.
  • Visa requirements depend on the country of citizenship for Canadian permanent residents.
  • The Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection have authority over entry into the USA.
  • Consult the U.S. Embassy and Consulate websites for up-to-date information on traveling to the USA.

Risk Level and Safety and Security in the USA

When traveling to the United States, it is essential to consider the risk level, safety, and security measures in place. While most of the country is safe for travelers, it’s necessary to be aware of specific areas that may pose higher risks.

Risk Level in the United States

Along the border with Mexico, in states like Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas, criminal incidents related to drug trafficking may occur more frequently.

Travelers should exercise increased caution in these areas and use officially recognized border crossings when crossing the U.S.-Mexico border by car. It’s important to stay vigilant and follow local law enforcement guidance.

There may be instances of petty crime, such as pickpocketing, in urban centers and tourist locations. Travelers should be mindful of their belongings and take necessary precautions to protect their valuables.

Entry and Exit Requirements for Canadian Permanent Residents

As a Canadian permanent resident planning to travel to the United States, you must familiarize yourself with the entry and exit requirements. These requirements ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience. Here are the key details you need to know:

  • Traveling by Air: When traveling by air, you must present a valid passport for the duration of your stay or a valid NEXUS card at self-serve kiosks. This applies to both entry and exit from the United States.
  • Traveling by Land or Water: If you’re entering the United States by land or water, you may need a valid passport, a Trusted Traveler Program card, an enhanced driver’s license (EDL), or other approved travel documents. It’s essential to check the specific requirements based on your travel purpose and the duration of your stay.

In addition to these requirements, it’s always recommended to carry your Canadian permanent resident card or other proof of your status as a Canadian permanent resident when traveling to the United States.

Entry and Exit Requirements for Canadian Permanent Residents

Remember, having the necessary documentation and meeting the entry and exit requirements is essential for hassle-free travel as a Canadian permanent resident.

Visa Requirements for Canadian Permanent Residents

The visa requirements for Canadian permanent residents vary depending on their country of citizenship.

If you are a citizen of a country eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you may be able to visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa. However, if you are not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program or your stay in the U.S. exceeds 90 days, you must apply for a nonimmigrant visa.

The Visa Waiver Program lets people from certain countries visit the U.S. for tourism or business without a visa. To qualify, you need a valid e-passport and approval through ESTA.

This program provides convenience for Canadian permanent residents who meet the requirements and plan to visit the U.S. temporarily.

However, you must apply for a nonimmigrant visa if you are not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program or plan to stay in the U.S. for longer than 90 days.

The reason for your trip determines the visa you require, be it for work, study, or joining a family member. Review the criteria and application procedures for the particular nonimmigrant visa category that suits your situation.

Disclaimer: The table info is just a general guide. Visa rules can change, so check the exact requirements for your country and the reason for traveling.

Permanent Residents of Canada and the Visa Waiver Program

As a permanent resident of Canada, you may be eligible for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) when traveling to the United States. The VWP allows individuals from participating countries to visit the U.S. for business or pleasure for up to 90 days without needing a visa.

To qualify for the VWP, you must be a citizen of a participating country, possess a valid e-Passport, and have obtained ESTA approval. This streamlined process makes it easier for Canadian permanent residents to travel to the United States.

When getting ready for your trip, bring evidence of your Permanent Resident Status in Canada for your return. This could be your permanent resident card or travel document.

Also, have all the essential travel documents, including your passport and any extra paperwork that U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers might ask for.

While the VWP allows for visa-free travel, it’s essential to remember that it has certain limitations. The 90-day period is not extendable, and you must leave the United States before your authorized stay ends.

If you plan to stay in the U.S. for longer than the allowed 90 days or for purposes other than those permitted under the VWP, you must apply for a nonimmigrant visa before your trip.

Participating Countries in the Visa Waiver Program

Visa Requirements for Canadian Permanent Residents from Specific Countries

If you’re a permanent resident of Canada originally from India, you need to request a U.S. Visitor Visa. This visa lets you travel to the United States for different reasons, such as tourism, business, medical treatment, or participating in conferences and workshops. Review the visa requirements based on your citizenship to ensure a hassle-free entry into the United States.

The U.S. Department of State’s official website provides comprehensive information on visa requirements and the application process, making it easier to understand the specific steps you need to take.

Remember to allow ample time for visa processing, as it can take several weeks or months, depending on your situation.

Table: Visa Requirements for Canadian Permanent Residents from Specific Countries

It’s important to note that visa requirements may change over time, so it’s always a good idea to check for any updates or changes before planning your trip.

To find out what you need for a visa, contact the U.S. embassy or consulate where you live. They’ll give you the most current info.

Permanent Resident Travel Documents (PRTD)

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

pr travel card canada

What is a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) and how can it help me?

You need a valid permanent resident (PR) card to return to Canada by plane, train, bus or boat. If you know your card is going to expire when you’re travelling, you should renew it before you leave Canada because you can only renew your card in Canada. The Canadian government will not send PR cards to non-Canadian addresses and they also won't allow you to have your card sent to a third party such as our office.

If you’re outside Canada and don’t have a valid PR card, you will need to apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) to return to Canada. You can only apply for a PRTD from outside Canada. If you try to return to Canada without a PR card or PRTD, you may not be able to take your flight, train, bus or boat to Canada .

Don't worry, if your card expires when you’re outside Canada, you still have your permanent resident (PR) status as long as you have met your residency obligation. For PR this is 2 years in every 5 years that you are a permanent resident of Canada, or 730 days in every 1825 days. For more information on residency obligation click here.

What happens if your PR card expires when you’re outside Canada? This will depend on how you plan to return to Canada.

Private vehicle.

There are  other documents you can use to re-enter the country.

When you return to Canada, apply for a PR card if you plan to travel outside Canada again.

Some examples of private vehicles include, but are not limited to: a car, truck, motorcycle, or recreational vehicle that you own, borrow, or rent. It is a vehicle not available for public use.

Commercial vehicle: airplane, bus, train, or boat

You must apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD). Otherwise you may not be able to travel to Canada.

You can  apply to replace your permanent resident (PR) card when you return to Canada or if you haven’t left yet. You may eligible for urgent processing .

Most PR cards are valid for five years, but some are only valid for one year. The expiry date is printed on the card. When your PR card expires, you can’t use it as a travel document. If your PR card will expire within six months, you should apply to renew your card . You need to be in Canada. If you’re re-entering Canada by commercial vehicle and have an expired PR card, get your PRTD to re-enter Canada.

Check our processing times to see how long you will have to wait to get your new card.

If you need a PR Travel Document or would like to discuss your particular situation, please contact us for an appointment .

  • PR (Permanent Residence)

Last Updated On 20 January 2023, 9:06 AM EST (Toronto Time)

Permanent residents outside Canada without valid PR cards need a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) to return to Canada.

Moreover, a permanent resident travel card is generally valid for a single entry to Canada.

If you are a Canadian permanent resident outside Canada needing a PRTD, you must apply for a new PR card as soon as you return to Canada.

In this article, you can learn about permanent resident travel documents (PRTD).

Who is eligible for a permanent resident travel document?

You can apply for a permanent resident travel document if want to return to Canada and you are:

  • are a permanent resident,
  • do not have a valid PR card showing your PR status,
  • are  outside Canada , and
  • will return to Canada by airplane, boat, train or bus.

How to apply for a permanent resident travel document?

You can apply for a permanent resident travel document if you meet the eligibility criteria and residency obligation.

To apply, you must submit a complete application, including all required forms and supporting documents applicable to your country or territory.

Moreover, you would also have to pay the non-refundable application fee of $50.

Additionally, you must show in your application that you meet the requirements to remain a permanent resident.

If you plan to apply with your family, each family member must submit a separate application for a permanent resident travel document with the correct fee.

This rule applies to all, regardless of their age.

Canada PR Residency Obligation – Here Is How To Calculate!

Steps to apply for a permanent resident travel document

Step 1:  Use the IRCC tool to find your country-specific forms and document requirement for your application.

Step 2:  Once you have identified your country-specific documents, fill out the required forms. In general, you would fill out and submit the following forms.

  • Form IMM 5444 – Application for a permanent resident card or permanent resident travel document
  • Form IMM 5644 – Document checklist

The forms below are additional. Submit the forms below only if they apply to you.

  • If this applies to you, you and your representative must sign this form by hand
  • Form IMM 5475 – Authority to release personal information to a designated individual

While filling out the form, remember to fill out each section. If something does not apply to you, either writer ‘N/A’ or ‘Not Applicable.’ Leaving sections blank may result in your application being returned or delayed.

Step 4:  Once you have filled out all the forms, pay your application fee of $50. You must include your proof of payment receipt with your online or paper application.

As mentioned, you have a separate application for each family member and pay the required application fees.

Step 3:  Submit your supporting documents and application. Those applying online can submit all documents through the permanent resident portal.

For full official IRCC guide to apply, click here.

Processing times for PRTD varies by country. Usually, it may take up to 6 to 8 weeks for processing of PRTD. However, it may take even longer than 8 weeks.

What documents do I need to renew my PR card?

  • Are you eligible for a PR card?

Can you start the application while outside Canada?

Can you apply for canadian citizenship, gathering primary and secondary documents.

If your PR card has or will soon expire, you will need to begin the renewal process . There are a number of documents that you will need to provide the IRCC whether you are applying for your first card, renewing an expired card or getting a replacement due to damage or loss. You may also go through the same application process if you want to change the sex designation on your PR card.

Canada PR renewal requirements – Are you eligible for a PR card?

Before you even begin the application process, find out if you are eligible for a permanent resident card. You are a candidate for a PR card if you are a permanent resident, physically present in Canada and you meet certain residency requirements. If you are under a removal order, you are not eligible for this card. Canadian citizens and those who are convicted for misusing a PR card cannot be issued with this card.

You can apply for a PR card while outside Canada but the immigration authorities will require you to return to Canada in order to receive it. If you are outside Canada and your card has expired, you can get a Permanent Resident Travel Document in order to enter Canada. Make sure you are meeting the residency requirement before you apply for a Travel Document because the application can be refused even if your PR card application has been approved.

When filling out forms to get a new PR card, make sure the documents required for PR card renewal are not missing or the copies are clear. The IRCC will return your application if this is the case. Primary documents required to process your PR card application include:

  • A copy of a valid passport or travel document (either current or the one you had when applying to become a permanent resident)
  • A copy of the certificate of identity or travel document that was issued by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada
  • Any identity document that was issued outside of Canada before returning to Canada
  • A statutory declaration that attests the applicant’s identity and is either signed by a person who knew the applicant before coming to Canada or an official of an organization that represents people from the applicant’s country of nationality or previous residence

You may also be required to present any of the following secondary documents:

  • A copy of the record landing or confirmation of permanent residence
  • A copy of a valid provincial driver’s license , student ID card or photo-identity card
  • A copy of a recent income tax assessment issued by the Canada Revenue Agency
  • For applicants who are under the age of 18, a birth certificate is required

Can I travel before I receive my Canadian PR Card?

pr travel card canada

Once an individual has applied for permanent residence (PR) and received a confirmation of permanent residence (COPR), they are still required to do a landing and receive a PR card to fully complete the process of becoming a confirmed permanent resident of Canada.

Discover if You Are Eligible for Canadian Immigration

Landings can be done in two ways. They can be part of a complete immigration to Canada—where a new PR and their dependents arrive in Canada ready to move to the country—or as “ soft landings ”, where new PRs simply land in Canada to complete the process of attaining their status and receive their first PR card.

In both cases (especially the latter), there may be instances where new PRs need to travel before they are able to attain their PR card. New permanent residents can travel before receiving their PR card, but the process is more complicated than simply returning to Canada. This article will cover what newcomers can do in such situations.

Note: the below information is also relevant to those who have an expired PR card. The Canadian government recommends renewing a PR card up to nine months before it expires.

What is a PR Card?

Before discussing best practices, it will be beneficial to clarify what a PR card is and how it functions.

A PR card is an identification document that is issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It is used as a confirmation of status document in Canada and was instituted in 2002 as an alternative to printed identity documents.

Once a new permanent resident is approved for PR, they will receive a PR visa which allows them to travel to the country. PR visas allow permanent residents to travel to Canada, PR cards allow permanent residents to enter and reside freely in Canada, as confirmation of their PR status.

Note that the first time a new permanent resident arrives in Canada, they will not need their PR card; but instead their PR visa (if their passport is from a country that requires a visa to travel to Canada ), valid passport, confirmation of permanent residence (COPR/e-COPR), and valid medical test result .

New permanent residents will not need to apply for their first PR card , it will arrive by mail to the address they provide the border officer with at the port of entry, or within the 180 days required to report an address in Canada.

What to do if you need to travel before receiving your PR card

Importantly, it should be noted that the Canadian government will not ship PR cards to addresses outside of Canada. In addition, third parties are not allowed to accept a PR card on a new PRs behalf. For these reasons, a new permanent resident outside of Canada without a valid PR card must apply for a Permanent Residence Travel Document (PRTD).

A PRTD is a travel document (usually only valid for a single use) that permanent residents can use to re-enter Canada. Newcomers can use this document if:

  • They are a permanent resident;
  • They do not have a valid PR card showing their status;
  • They are outside of Canada; and
  • They will return to Canada by air, boat, bus, or train.

Notably, if a new permanent resident is returning to Canada via private vehicle, there are o ther acceptable documents that they can use to prove their identity and status .

How to apply for a PRTD

PRTDs can only be applied for outside of Canada. To apply for a PRTD, new permanent residents must collect the application package and fill out and gather all applicable forms and supporting documentation. There are associated fees to applying, which must be paid online .

Depending on where permanent residents are applying from, they may not be able to submit a paper application. In such cases, and if applicants choose to apply online, they must submit their application and all supporting documentation through the permanent residence portal . If applied for on paper, permanent residents must submit their application to the closest visa application centre (VAC) to them. Both the method of applying, and location applying from can influence how quickly one receives their PRTD.

After applying, permanent residents may also be required to attend an interview with a VAC agent before they receive a decision on their application. To learn more about steps after submitting your PRTD application, click here .

Other options

If new permanent residents are aware they need to travel urgently, but have some time in Canada before their departure, they may apply for urgent processing of their PR card.

Valid conditions for applying for this processing include the need to travel in the next three months due to:

  • a job opportunity;
  • your own serious illness;
  • the death of a family member;
  • work related to your current job; and/or
  • the serious illness of a family member.

Importantly, even if a permanent resident is eligible for urgent processing of their PR card, they are still not guaranteed to receive their PR card in time. PR card applications cannot be processed in less than three weeks.

To check personalised waiting times, IRCC has created a tool which can be accessed here .

Best Challenger Bank Credit Cards In Canada For August 2024

Published: Aug 30, 2024, 1:23pm

Fact Checked

Canada’s Big Six banks aren’t the only ones offering credit cards these days. So-called challenger banks—small, online-only institutions like KOHO, EQ Bank and PC Financial—also compete for consumers’ wallets. While challenger banks are usually much younger than their brick-and-mortar competitors, they claim to be far more digitally savvy and nimble with highly competitive offerings.

The following cards are typical of challenger bank cards. They tend to be a little more forgiving of cardholders with fair credit and low incomes than elite cards offered by major banks, but they don’t have the same breadth of perks. That said, challenger banks that partner with retailers tend to offer very deep rewards (in some cases, double-digit) cashback opportunities.

If you’re looking for your next credit card, and the Big Six aren’t appealing, you’ll find everything you need to know about Canada’s best challenger bank credit cards below:

When determining a rating for individual credit cards, the Forbes Advisor Canada editorial team factors in an exhaustive list of data points. With challenger bank cards, the scoring model used takes into account factors such as, but not limited to, cash back rates and categories, fees, welcome bonus, and other rewards and features. Keep in mind what may be best for some people might not be right for you. Conduct informed research before deciding which cards will best help you achieve your financial goals.

This card is ideal for anyone who loves to shop at Neo’s various partner retailers and is looking for a prepaid credit card with the rewards features of a full-blown Mastercard.

Rewards: Earn 1% cash back on groceries, eating & drinking and transportation. Plus, up to 5% cash back from select retail partners.

Welcome Offer: 30-day free trial to any KOHO subscription plans

Annual Fee: $4* per month or $48 per year for an Essential Plan

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: KOHO is on the Mastercard network. So, even though it’s a prepaid credit card, it’s still widely accepted. That said, unless you use the credit building features, this card won’t help repair your credit score like a traditional credit card or secured credit card would. You must also pay to play, as credit-building features cost $10 per month.

If you’re looking for a secured credit card that can still earn you rewards on everyday spending, this card is for you.

Rewards: Earn up to 4% cash back on gas and grocery and up to 1% everywhere else

Welcome Offer: Up to 15% cashback on first-time purchases

Annual Fee: $5 per month

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: Unfortunately, the 4% amount you can earn on this card is limited to gas and groceries, but you are guaranteed a solid 1% back on all your other spending. Because it’s a secured card, it can help you improve your credit, too.

Anyone who wants to earn high interest on their total balance without any foreign transaction or everyday banking fees might find the KOHO Extra Prepaid Mastercard worthwhile.

Rewards: 1.5% cashback on groceries, eating out, and transportation. 5% cashback on select Neo partner merchants. Other purchase categories receive 0.25% cashback.

Welcome Offer: Receive a $40 one-time bonus, plus a free 30-day trial for any KOHO Plan, if you register for a new account and make your first purchase within 30 days. You can also get four months of the KOHO Everything plan, and $20 towards your first purchase when you sign up for a new KOHO account using the promo code “KOHOCARD”.

Annual Fee: $84

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: No foreign transaction fees or spending caps for rewards. Cardholders also get access to on-demand financial coaching courtesy of KOHO. One drawback of the KOHO Extra Prepaid Mastercard is that deposits are limited to $40,000, which may not be ideal for high spenders.

This card’s lack of an annual fee and secured option makes it ideal for anyone trying to rebuild their credit, and its flexible rewards options are a great bonus.

Rewards: Varies according to a cardholder’s Neo plan. Basic accounts give just 4% back on gas and groceries, and 1% back on all other purchases.

Welcome Offer: Up to 15% in cashback on first-time purchases.

Annual Fee: $0

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: If your Everyday balance at Neo increases, your earning rate follows suit. You also have access to a $10,000 credit limit instantly. And if your credit is poor, you can get access to a secured version of this card with all of the same features as the original.

If you love the PC Optimum network, the PC Insiders World Elite Mastercard delivers more value than any other card in PC Financial’s lineup.

Rewards: 50 PC Optimum points for every dollar spent at Shoppers Drug Mart stores, 40 PC Optimum points per $1 spent at Joe Fresh and Loblaw-banner grocery stores, and 10 PC Optimum points per dollar spent everywhere else. Cardholders also earn seven cents on every litre of gas they buy at Esso and Mobil gas stations.

Welcome Offer: Get 300,000 PC Optimum points for spending $3,000 or more within four months of receiving your card.

Annual Fee: $120

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: Cardholders get a free PC Express Pass ($99.99 a year) that offers free grocery delivery and pickup on all orders of $35 or more. They also get $1 million worth of travel emergency medical insurance for anyone under 65 for the first 10 days of a trip.

The Brim World Elite Mastercard is for anyone who enjoys a decent earning rate on various shopping categories.

Rewards: 2 points per $1 spent on the card, redeemable as cash after accumulating 100 points. The card provides this earnings ratio for up to $25,000 in spending per year, after which the earn rate is 1 point per dollar. Shopping at brands involved in the Brim Open Rewards loyalty program can earn cardholders three points per dollar.

Welcome Offer: None.

Annual Fee: $199 (waived for the first year)

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: For all of its benefits, the Brim World Elite Mastercard comes with a hefty income requirement: $80,000 a year for individuals or $150,000 a year for households. It also caps rewards at $25,000 per year for its 2 points-per-$1 earn rate.

If you love earning PC Optimum points without any annual fees, this card may be for you.

Rewards: Earn up to 45 PC Optimum points for every dollar spent at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix stores, up to 30 for every dollar spent at Loblaw-banner and Joe Fresh stores, as well as 30 points on every litre you buy at Esso and Mobil gas stations. This card earns 10 PC Optimum points for every dollar spent on all other purchases.

Welcome Offer: 20,000 PC Optimum points when you make your first purchase at a store where PC products are sold, or at an Esso or Mobil gas station, within the first six months of receiving your card.

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: This card doesn’t earn the same rewards as higher-end PC Financial cards like the Insiders World Elite Mastercard listed above, but it’s also free to own and has no stringent income requirements.

This card is for anyone who loves Canadian Tire, especially if they regularly use the retailer’s financing options.

Rewards: 4% in Canadian Tire money on purchases from Canadian Tire and affiliated retailers, 3% in Canadian Tire money on groceries (except for Walmart and Costco), and 0.5% per litre of gas, as well as all other purchases.

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: One neat feature of the Triangle World Elite Mastercard is that cardholders don’t pay any interest or fees if they buy anything over $150 through Canadian Tire’s financing program. But this card comes at a cost: It requires a minimum of $80,000 a year in personal income or a household total of $150,000.

Hate fees? You won’t pay any with the EQ Bank Card, including on foreign currency purchases, transaction fees, and ATM withdrawals.

Rewards: 0.5% in cashback on all purchases. You also earn 2.5% in interest on your balance until you spend it.

Welcome Offer: None

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: Unfortunately, this card requires an EQ Bank Savings Account and limits daily spending to $5,000.

If you need a credit card but are having trouble getting one because of your poor credit score, you may appreciate the Home Trust Secured Visa’s high approval rates.

Rewards: None

Other Benefits and Drawbacks: This card offers flexible credit limit ranges, worldwide acceptance, and compatibility with digital wallets. Unfortunately, it doesn’t offer rewards.

Challenger banks in Canada include KOHO, Neo Financial, PC Financial, Home Trust, Wealthsimple, Motusbank, Tangerine, and EQ Bank. The term ‘challenger bank’ refers to financial institutions with bank charters (like EQ Bank) and those without (like KOHO). Confusingly, it can also refer to institutions like Tangerine, which is owned by one of Canada’s biggest traditional banks.

Challenger banks grew as alternatives to the offerings of traditional banks like TD, Scotiabank, and RBC. Many of their cards are relatively easy to qualify for, with some neat perks, but typically don’t have the institutional heft of Big Six financial products.

  • Low credit score range
  • Few, if any, income restrictions
  • Typically, low annual fees
  • Poor welcome offerings
  • Rewards are often retailer-specific
  • Few travel or insurance perks

What is a challenger bank?

A challenger bank refers to financial institutions seen as alternatives to Canada’s Big Six banks, which include Scotiabank, TD, RBC, BMO, CIBC, and National Bank of Canada. These banks tend to be standalone financial institutions, although a few, such as Tangerine, are independently owned subsidiaries of the Big Six.

What challenger bank has the best credit card?

According to Forbes Advisor Canada’s methodology, KOHO has the best credit card out of Canada’s challenger banks. However, every cardholder’s needs and financial situation differ, and you should always research any financial products before applying.

Why should you apply for a credit card from a challenger bank?

If you struggle to qualify for decent credit cards at Big Six banks, a challenger bank may be right for you. They can’t rely on the customer bases of banks like RBC, which boasts 17 million clients worldwide, so challenger banks must be as enticing as possible to grow.

What does a challenger bank have in their credit cards that mainstream credit card issuers do not?

Challenger banks vary widely, but many challenger bank credit cards boast brand-specific bonuses that can be substantially higher than general rewards programs. For example, some of the retailers in KOHO’s network offer a 50% cash-back reward.

What is the most unique feature of a challenger bank credit card?

The Triangle World Elite Mastercard, offered by Canadian Tire Bank, gives cardholders access to zero-interest and zero-fee financing on Canadian Tire purchases over $150.

Understand permanent resident status

Permanent residents (PRs) of Canada must carry and present their valid PR card or permanent resident travel document (PRTD) when boarding a flight to Canada, or travelling to Canada on any other commercial carrier. If you do not carry your PR card or PRTD, you may not be able to board your flight, train, bus or boat to Canada.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your PR card is still valid when you return from travel outside Canada, and to apply for a new PR card when your current card expires. If your PR card expires, it does not mean you have lost permanent resident status.

A permanent resident (PR) is someone who has been given PR status by immigrating to Canada , but is not a Canadian citizen . PRs are usually citizens of other countries, while some may be stateless persons.

When refugees resettle in Canada from overseas , they become PRs through the Government-Assisted Refugee Program or the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program .

If you make a refugee claim in Canada, you don’t become a PR immediately. To become one, the Immigration and Refugee Board must first approve your claim. Then, you must apply for and obtain PR status.

You’re not a PR if you’re only in Canada for a short time (for example, as a student or foreign worker).

The permanent resident (PR) card

Your PR card proves that you have PR status in Canada. If you travel outside Canada and return on a commercial vehicle (like an airplane, boat, train or bus), you must show

  • your PR card and
  • your passport or refugee travel document

If you’re traveling outside Canada without a valid PR card with you, apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD) before returning to Canada by commercial vehicle.

If your PR card was lost, stolen or damaged , apply for a replacement PR card .

How to properly dispose of your expired PR card

Destroy your old PR card by cutting it in half before disposing of it so you protect your information and privacy.

What permanent residents can do

As a PR, you

  • get most social benefits that Canadian citizens receive, including a social insurance number to work in Canada, and health care coverage (check your provincial website for more information)
  • can live, work or study anywhere in Canada
  • can apply for Canadian citizenship
  • get protection under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
  • must pay taxes and respect all Canadian laws at the federal, provincial and municipal levels

What permanent residents cannot do

You’re not allowed to

  • vote or run for political office or
  • hold some jobs that need a high-level security clearance

Time lived in Canada

To keep your PR status, you must have been in Canada for at least 730 days during the last five years. These 730 days don’t need to be continuous. Some of your time outside Canada may count towards the 730 days you need.

  • Find out if your time outside Canada counts toward your 730 days .
  • Track your time in Canada with our travel journal .

Losing your permanent resident status

You won’t lose your PR status when your PR card expires.

You will only lose your PR status if

  • an officer determines you are no longer a PR after an inquiry or PRTD appeal following a refusal
  • you voluntarily renounce your PR status
  • a removal order made against you comes into force
  • you become a Canadian citizen

Even if you don't meet the residency obligation, you will stay a PR until an official decision is made on your status.

Learn how to avoid travel delays if you are not sure of your status .

Voluntarily giving up (renouncing) permanent resident status

We won’t change your PR status automatically and we’ll always inform you of the change.

In some cases, you may decide you don’t want to be a PR of Canada anymore. For example, you may want to renounce your PR status in the following situations:

  • You have not met your residency obligations by being outside of Canada for a long period of time.
  • You plan to visit Canada and want to avoid the processing delays from a formal assessment of your PR status when you arrive.

In these cases, you may not be able to enter Canada until your PR status is resolved either by applying for a PRTD or by voluntarily giving up (renouncing) your PR status.
