Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Visit the  Embassy of the Slovak Republic  website for the most current visa information and  CDC Travel Destination  page for immunization information.

Slovakia is a party to the Schengen Agreement. This means that U.S. citizens may enter Slovakia for up to 90 days for tourist or business purposes without a visa.

Traveling Through Europe : If you are planning to visit or travel through European countries, you should be familiar with the requirements of the Schengen Agreement.

  • Your passport should be valid for at least six months upon arrival in the Schengen. If you plan on transiting a Schengen country review our U.S. Travelers in Europe page .
  • You will need s ufficient proof of funds and a return plane ticket .
  • For additional information about visas for the Schengen area, see the Schengen Visa page.

Carry  proof of sufficient funds  (such as a credit card) and make sure your medical insurance  policy covers all costs if in need of hospitalization and medical treatment in Slovakia.

  • Upon arrival in Slovakia, you must  register with the local Border and Alien Police within three working days if you are staying in a private home . Hotels and official accommodation providers will register you automatically.
  • If you want to  reside in Slovakia or stay longer than 90 days , you must apply for a temporary residency and/or work permit. You should complete the application process through the Slovak Embassy in Washington, D.C.  prior to arriving in the country . If you decide to stay longer at the time of our arrival in Slovakia, you should  begin the process upon arrival as the process normally takes longer than the 90 days  allowed visa free. Read the requirements on the  U.S. Embassy website  and prepare your application before traveling. Many required documents, such as an  FBI clearance , are easier to obtain in the United States. To follow up on the status of a request, please contact the FBI directly at  [email protected] .
  • Slovak authorities strictly enforce residency laws.  Foreigners who stay beyond 90 days without a residency permit may be ordered to depart, or may even be deported with a possible ban on re-entry to the  entire Schengen area .

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Slovakia. A medical examination, including an HIV/AIDS test, is required to obtain a Slovakian residency permit.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Military/Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) Travelers : While active-duty U.S. military personnel may enter Slovakia under the (SOFA) with proper Department of Defense (DOD) identification and travel orders, all SOFA family members, civilian employees, and contractors must have valid passports. Active-duty military personnel are encouraged to obtain a tourist passport before leaving the United States to accommodate off-duty travel. DOD travelers should consult with their unit for clearance  before  leaving the United States.

Safety and Security

Credible information indicates terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Europe. European governments are taking action to guard against terrorist attacks; however, all European countries remain vulnerable to attacks from transnational terrorist organizations.

Slovakia has seen an increase in the number of demonstrations in response to political events. Though still relatively rare, small, and so far peaceful, demonstrations and gatherings always have the potential to turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should exercise caution in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations. Please see the U.S. Embassy’s website for  safety and security messages .

Crime:  while crime is relatively low, street crimes against tourists do occur in tourist areas.

  • The most common crimes reported include pickpocketing and cell phone and bag/purse theft, particularly during the summer months. Most thefts reported by U.S. citizens occur at crowded tourist sites (such as Bratislava’s Old Town area) or on public buses, trams, or trains.
  • Be alert to criminal schemes. Thieves, including adults and/or children, often work in groups or pairs. In many cases, an individual or group distracts the victim, sometimes with musical instruments or pets, so that others can pickpocket.
  • Criminals target tourists at nightclubs with ties to organized crime. In the past, such establishments have presented foreign customers with inflated bills and threatened those who refuse to pay. They also spike drinks with disabling drugs and take the impaired victims to ATMs and coerce them to withdraw funds until they empty their accounts or the card is blocked.
  • Domestic and foreign organized criminal organizations are well established in Slovakia. Though uncommon, violent incidents sometimes do occur.

International Financial Scams : See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information on scams.

Victims of Crime:  U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault should first contact the  U.S. Embassy . Report crimes to the local police by  dialing 112  and contact the U.S. Embassy at + (421) (2) 5443-0861 or + (421) (2) 5443-3338. The Embassy’s emergency after-hours number is + (421) 903-703-666.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

  • English-speaking operators are normally available for emergency calls.
  • Once an individual reports a crime, the police must investigate it according to local laws and procedures.
  • Embassy employees are not able to act as your personal legal representatives or resolve private legal disputes.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • help you find appropriate medical care
  • assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • contact relatives or friends with your written consent

  • provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • help you find temporary accommodation and arrange flights home in cases of destitution
  • help you find accommodation and arrange flights home

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may  contact the Embassy  for assistance.

Tourism:  Within Bratislava the tourism industry is generally regulated and rules are enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically available to support organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available in the city. Outside Bratislava and throughout the country, the tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections of equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified by either the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the U.S., regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

  • Do not purchase counterfeit or pirated goods . They are illegal in the United States and you may be breaking local laws as well.
  • Driving under the influence is a crime and may land you in jail . The blood alcohol tolerance level is  zero percent .
  • It is illegal to take photographs of security or military installations . If you violate this law, authorities may confiscate the pictures and recordings, issue a reprimand or fine, or even expel you from the country.
  • If you are over 16 years of age or older, you are required by law to carry a passport and/or a Slovak identity card at all times . A photocopy of your passport is not sufficient, although we recommend that you keep a photocopy of your passport in a safe place.
  • Slovak customs authorities enforce strict regulations  concerning temporary import or export of firearms, antiquities, medications, business equipment,  et al . Contact the  Embassy of the Slovak Republic  or a  Slovak consulate  in the United States for specific information regarding customs requirements.
  • Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See our following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report  – see country reports

  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTI Travelers:  LGBTI U.S. Citizens in same-sex marriages or civil unions who travel to or reside in Slovakia may face difficulties and legal issues, as the country does not recognize same-sex unions and adopted a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in 2014. Same-sex sexual activity between consenting adults is legal. Slovak law prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and classifies crimes based on sexual orientation as hate crimes, though these laws are not always enforced. Prejudice and societal discrimination persist. LGBTI persons occasionally report that they receive anti-LGBTI verbal abuse in the form of slurs. However, Bratislava and Kosice have hosted annual Pride parades without major incident since 2010.

See   our  LGBTI Travel Information   page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities:   Slovak law requires that public areas be accessible to persons with disabilities. Many older buildings and areas, however, have not been retrofitted.  Navigating most Slovak cities with a visual impairment or on a wheelchair is difficult due to the many obstacles and barriers on sidewalks and in public transport. Guide dogs are allowed in all municipal spaces, but may not be allowed in private shops, restaurants, and hotels; it is advised to call ahead to inquire.  See our  Traveling with Disabilities  page.

  • Many sidewalks are narrow and uneven, and small towns may lack sidewalks.
  • Some municipal spaces, such as post offices, hospitals, shopping centers, and libraries have either an elevator or platforms to accommodate customers who cannot use stairs.  Small restaurants and shops are less likely to be accessible.
  • Traffic lights in some city centers have a sound signal for the visually-impaired, however, it is reported that they are often out-of-service.  Public signs for the visually-impaired are uncommon.
  • The state television channels provide broadcasting for the hearing-impaired, and important national events frequently have visible sign language interpretation in real-time.
  • Public transportation and the railway system stations generally lack elevators and do not provide easy access for people with mobility issues.  This is true even in the capital city of Bratislava.
  • Only a few buses are equipped with lowering platforms, while trams have none.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

The quality and availability of medical facilities varies. A limited number of doctors speak English.

  • For any emergency, including medical emergencies,  call 112 .
  • English-speaking dispatchers are usually available.
  • Children’s emergencies are handled at Bratislava’s Children’s University Hospital.
  • Ambulance services are widely available.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance overseas. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

  • Without Slovak health insurance, ambulance service starts at 120 euros per transport .
  • Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas.
  • You may need special insurance for  hiking and skiing , which is available from local providers.
  • If you  stay longer than 90 days , you need local health insurance.
  • The tick-borne encephalitis vaccination is recommended. Contact your doctor for more information.

We do not pay medical bills . We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in its original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.  Check with the Slovak Ministry of Health to ensure the medication is legal in Slovakia.

The following disease is prevalent:

  • Tick-borne encephalitis  (TBE) can result from the bites of ticks commonly found in the bushes and grass of forests in Slovakia at lower and middle elevations.  They are most active from spring to late fall especially in the northern regions of Trencin and Zilina.  Low risk exists throughout the rest of the country. Transmission occurs throughout the year, with highest activity from June through September.
  • Even though the CDC does not explicitly recommend the TBE vaccine,  other official European sources have recommended the TBE vaccine for travelers who plan to stay for extended periods or who plan to camp and stay outdoors.  Vaccines are available through a general practitioner or a pediatrician in Slovakia but are not available in the U.S.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health facilities in general:

  • Adequate health facilities are available throughout the country.
  • Doctors, hospitals, and ambulance services in Slovakia  expect cash payment  unless the patient can present an insurance number from the  Slovak National Insurance Company  or show proof of private insurance prior to needing medical care.
  • Travelers should make efforts to obtain complete information on billing, pricing, and proposed medical procedures before agreeing to any medical care.
  • Nurses may speak little or no English.
  • Patients bear all costs for transfer to or between hospitals.
  • Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions.
  • The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals .  We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery

Although Slovakia has many elective/cosmetic surgery facilities that are on par with those found in the United States, the quality of care varies.  If you plan to undergo surgery in Slovakia, make sure that emergency medical facilities are available, and professionals are accredited and qualified.

  • People seeking health care overseas should understand that medical systems operate differently from those in the United States and are not subject to the same rules and regulations.  Anyone interested in traveling for medical purposes should consult with their local physician before traveling and visit the CDC Medical Tourism for more information on Medical Tourism.
  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for information on Medical Tourism, the risks of medical tourism, and what you can do to prepare before traveling to Slovakia.
  • We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications.
  • Your legal options in case of malpractice are available through the Office of Supervision of Healthcare Providers at the Public Health Authority . Official communication is in Slovak language only.

Pharmaceuticals

  • Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription, are often readily available for purchase.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration websites for more information.
  • Slovakia does not allow the importation of medication unless the traveler shows the prescription and the amount necessary for the trip. Please review Slovakia’s rules on medication at the Slovak Ministry of Health .

Non-Traditional Medicine

  • Officially licensed medical providers can be verified at https://www.portaludzs.sk/overenie-poskytovatela-zdravotnej-starostlivosti

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy

  • Surrogacy is illegal in Slovakia.
  • Foreigners do not regularly travel to Slovakia for ART services.

Water Quality: In Slovakia, tap water is potable. Bottled water and beverages are also safe.

Air Quality: Cities in Slovakia have air pollution levels similar to those in major U.S. cities. Levels are generally low during the warm season but sometimes worse than U.S. standards in the cold season. Visit the European Environment Agency’s website for information on air quality in Slovakia.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Roads in Slovakia are generally safe and well-maintained. Four-lane highways exist in and around Bratislava. Most roads outside of developed areas; however, are two lanes only.  Aggressive drivers  attempting to pass at unsafe speeds pose a serious hazard.

  • Use  caution  when driving outside urban areas at night. The roads are narrow, winding, and poorly lit.
  • From November through March, Slovakia experiences heavy snow . Snow removal is not adequate on rural roads. Roads in the mountainous northern part of the country are particularly prone to hazardous conditions during winter months.  The law requires winter tires for snowy conditions , and chains are necessary in certain mountainous areas.

Traffic Laws:  You must use seatbelts and headlights at all times. It is illegal to use cellular phones while driving.

  • Children under 12 year of age, weighing less than 80 pounds in weight or less than 5 feet in height must use a car seat or a booster.
  • You must have a motorcycle license and wear a helmet to operate a motorized two-wheeled vehicle.
  • Reflective safety vests and first aid kits must be in each vehicle.
  • Driving under the influence of ANY alcohol is a crime under Slovak law.  The blood alcohol tolerance level is  zero percent . Police stop cars randomly to perform breath tests.
  • If you get a ticket, you can pay the fine in cash on the spot to the officer.  If you cannot pay the fine on the spot, you will receive a notice to appear later at a police station, and the fine will be higher. Reportedly, foreigners are sometimes cited for more expensive violations than they commit, in an attempt to collect extra money from people who may not know the rules well.

As of January 1, 2016, you need to buy an electronic vignette to use certain highways and motorways. A vignette is a sticker that fixes to the windscreen to be clearly visible from the outside, showing that you’ve paid to drive along those roads. You can purchase it online .

You must obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) prior to your arrival if you intend to drive in Slovakia. You can get an IDP in the United States from the  American Automobile Association  and the  American Automobile Touring Alliance .

  • More information is available from the Dopravny Inspektorat at the district police department in your place of residence.
  • For specific information concerning a Slovak driver’s permit, vehicle inspection, road tax, and mandatory insurance, contact the  Embassy of Slovakia  in Washington, D.C.
  • Additional information about driving in Slovakia can be found on the Embassy  website .

Public Transportation:  Buses, trolleybuses, and trams are mechanically safe and generally reliable. We recommend using clearly marked taxicabs.

  • On public transportation, you must  validate a ticket  upon entering the vehicle. The ticket is valid for your entire journey. Major cities also offer tickets by SMS message through a local telephone service provider.
  • In most cities, you can buy passes valid for periods ranging from 24 hours to one year. Children from six to 15 years of age pay reduced fares.
  • A ticket inspector will fine passengers who are traveling without a valid ticket ; inspectors board transportation at random. The ticket inspector will have an identification card and must provide a receipt for the fare.
  • More information is provided in English on the  Bratislava city transport website  and websites of other cities with public transportation.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information.

Aviation Safety Oversight:   As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Slovakia, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the Government of Slovakia’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

How to obtain a Slovakia Schengen visa

  • Schengen Visa Guides

What fees are paid when applying for a Schengen visa to Slovakia

There are two types of fees which an applicant pays when applying for a visa to Slovakia. They are a visa fee and a service fee.

The visa fee equals €80 for an applicant over 12, but sometimes it may be increased to €120—160. However, an increased visa fee never applies to minors. For children from 6 to 12 years old, it is €40.

There is no visa fee for children under six years and for those who stay in the Schengen Zone for the purpose of studying or educational training. These are:

  • school pupils;
  • postgraduate students;
  • accompanying teachers.

Researchers and representatives of non-profit organisations are also exempt from a visa fee provided that the researchers carry out scientific research or participate in a scientific seminar or conference in the Schengen Zone. The representatives of non-profit organisations must be aged 25 years or less and participate in events organised by non-profit organisations.

The service fee may also be charged for issuing a Schengen visa in some cases by visa centres. It usually does not exceed half the sum of a visa fee, so usually, it is less than €80. However, it can reach €120 in certain states.

Prior consultations are compulsory for particular groups of citizens of certain countries before they get a Schengen visa to Slovakia. For instance, Egyptians are the subjects of prior consultations, except the ones with diplomatic and service passports. However, the holders of diplomatic and service passports from Belarus are the subjects of prior consultations .

The consulate may also require additional documents that depend on the purpose of the journey. Such a list of optional documents varies from situation to situation.

If a traveller visits Slovakia as a tourist, they need to provide the documents relating to their accommodation and itinerary:

  • proof of a hotel reservation or an invitation from the host;

Members of official delegations, along with the other essential documents, have to provide:

  • a letter issued by an authority of the third country confirming that the applicant is a member of the official delegation;
  • a copy of the official invitation.

People who go to Slovakia for medical treatment or consultations have to present the following papers:

  • the official paper of the medical institution which confirms that medical care is necessary;
  • the document proving that the applicant has enough money to pay for medical treatment.

Those who are on a business trip to Slovakia have to submit the following documents:

  • an invitation to attend meetings and events related to business;
  • other papers showing trade relations for work purposes;
  • entry tickets for the business events, e.g. conferences, if it is possible;
  • proofs of the business activities of the company;

Students and course attendants have to submit the following:

  • a certificate of enrolment at an educational establishment;
  • student cards or certificates of the courses they are going to attend.

Participants in cultural or sports events or those who have political or cultural reasons for their trips have to add the following documents:

  • an invitation from an event organiser;
  • entry tickets for the event;
  • enrolments or programmes with the name of the host organisation;
  • an official letter by a dispatching organisation applying for a visa for its employee.

In the case of an airport transit visa, one has to attach the following:

  • documents relating to the final destination after the airport transit;
  • papers proving that the applicant for an airport transit visa is not going to enter any country of the Schengen Area.

To apply for a visa, the minors’ parents or guardians shall provide the following documents:

  • an application signed by both parents or guardians of a child;
  • a birth certificate;
  • a court order if child custody is granted to one parent;
  • duly certified copies of each parent’s passports or ID cards.

If minors travel without their parents but accompanied by another adult, the following documents are provided:

  • a parental authorisation to travel to Slovakia, duly signed by both parents and guardians and notarised;
  • an original of an accompanying person’s passport and its copy;
  • a recent photo of a person who a minor travels with;
  • a copy of a valid Schengen visa of an accompanying person.

An employed applicant has to provide the documents confirming their employment status and income:

  • an employment agreement;
  • a bank statement for six months;
  • salary slips or other documents proving income;
  • a statement confirming that the employer has approved an employee’s leave;
  • an income tax return form.

In the case of self-employment , a visa-seeker has to attach the following papers to the rest:

  • a business license or contracts with clients;

A retiree has to present a pension statement for the last six months.

The whole process of obtaining a Slovak Schengen visa usually takes around one month.

An applicant has to submit the documents no earlier than six months or no later than 15 calendar days before the planned trip to the Diplomatic Mission of the Slovak Republic. It can either be a Consulate or an Embassy. In some cases, the applicant may submit the papers to the special authorised centre — VFS Global.

The most convenient way to travel to European Union countries visa-free is European Golden Visas — programs which allow wealthy individuals from all over the world to obtain a residence permit, permanent residence or citizenship of a country by investing money in its economy.

European Golden Visas also help investors from third countries create a safe haven in case of complicated political situations and provide the right type of life for their families, as the European standard of life is considered higher than anywhere in the world.

Different investment options start from €30,000. It is possible to obtain a residence permit in one of the European countries within a period of up to 6 months. Living in the state from 1 to 12 years, depending on the country, allows investors to obtain citizenship in Europe, which gives them an opportunity to travel to almost all the countries in the world visa-free.

1. To enter Slovakia, citizens of third countries that have no visa waiver agreements with the European Union have to obtain a Schengen visa to Slovakia.

2. To obtain a Schengen visa to Slovakia, you need to choose the purpose of the visit and collect the supporting documents. You may fill out the visa application online or offline and submit it to a diplomatic mission in Slovakia or via an authorised visa centre.

3. The decision process on the application usually takes 15 calendar days. However, in some instances, it can be extended up to 30 days. In cases when the commission requires additional documentation, it can be prolonged up to 45 days.

The type of visa one needs to enter Slovakia depends on the length of an intended stay and the purpose of the visit.

If you need to travel to another country through an airport in Slovakia, you need an Airport Transit visa or Type A visa. If the length of your stay doesn’t exceed 90 days, you have to apply for a Type C visa or Uniform Schengen visa. If you need to stay in Slovakia for more than 90 days, you have to receive a Type D visa or National visa and then apply for a residence permit in the country.

The process of applying for a Schengen visa to Slovakia takes several steps:

  • complete the visa application form;
  • book an appointment in the diplomatic mission or an authorised visa centre;
  • pay the necessary visa fees;
  • collect the required documents;
  • submit the collected documents and biometrics to the diplomatic mission or an authorised visa centre;
  • wait for the official’s decision;
  • collect your passport with a visa sticker.

There are several programs in Europe for investors that allow wealthy individuals from all over the world to obtain a visa to European countries through significant investments in the EU economy.

These programs or European Golden Visas grant, as a rule, residence permit or permanent residence. However, in some cases, it is possible to obtain citizenship by investment. The investment options are various and start from €30,000.

If you are a citizen of a non-EU country, you need a visa to Slovakia. If you have a residence permit that belongs to the Member State of the Schengen Zone, you can enter the Slovak Republic visa-free.

Certain groups of visitors don’t need a visa to enter Slovakia.

The applicant needs to submit the required documents for a visa either to the diplomatic mission of Slovakia or to the special authorised visa centre  — VFS Global. There are 91 diplomatic missions of the Slovak Republic abroad, represented in 64 countries on all continents.

As a rule, it takes an applicant about two weeks to collect the necessary documents, pay fees and lodge an application. Generally, after the application is submitted, the officials need 15 days to make a decision.

However, the waiting period for a decision may be increased to 30 days in some instances or even to 45 days if the commission needs additional documents.

If the country where an applicant is from has visa facilitation agreements with the EU, the waiting period may be shortened to 10 calendar days.

There are two main types of fees when applying for a Slovakia Schengen visa: the visa fee itself and a service fee.

The visa fee usually equals €80 for an adult, but sometimes it may be increased to €120-160. For children from 6 to 12 years old, it is €40, and there is no visa fee at all for certain groups of visitors.

The service fee usually does not exceed half the sum of a visa fee, so usually, it is less than €80. However, it can reach €120 in certain states.

As a rule, one has to apply for a Schengen visa to Slovakia in advance. It is not possible to extend a Schengen visa in the Slovak Republic.

However, in exceptional cases, such as natural disasters, humanitarian grounds, or serious personal reasons, one can extend a short-stay visa to Slovakia.

To extend a Schengen visa, a third-country national has to go to a respective police department and lodge an application for a visa validity extension.

The extension of a Schengen visa is free of charge if a foreigner is not able to leave the country due to force majeure or humanitarian reasons. In case of serious personal reasons, a third-country national has to pay a fee of €30.

Yes, a Schengen visa to Slovakia may be revoked in the following cases:

  • there is strong evidence that the visa was obtained fraudulently ;
  • the conditions for issuing a visa are no longer met;
  • a visa holder’s request revocation.

The visa holder has a right to appeal against the Member State that has decided to cancel the visa if a Schengen visa has been revoked due to the first two reasons.

To appeal against the decision on revocation, one has to submit the appeal to the diplomatic mission that issued the decision.

The appeal has to contain information about the appellant and point out the incorrectness in the decision and its non-compliance with the law. The document has to be either written in the Slovak language or officially translated into it.

An administrative fee for the appeal is €80.

No, they don’t. United States citizens may enter Slovakia without a visa for up to 90 days for tourist or business purposes, as Slovakia is a Member State of the Schengen Agreement.

Still, there are specific requirements for US citizens going to Slovakia:

  • their passports must be valid for at least six months after entering the Schengen Zone;
  • Americans have to prove sufficient funds to enter the EU;
  • they must own a return plane ticket;
  • their valid medical insurance has to cover all costs, including hospitalisation and medical treatment in Slovakia.

In case the application has been rejected, one has a right to appeal against this decision. The appeal must be submitted to the diplomatic mission within 15 days of receipt of the decision. Family members of citizens of the EU/EEA or the Swiss Confederation are able to submit the appeal within 30 days after obtaining a decision.

A Schengen visa is issued for the purpose of transit through the territory of the European Union Member States or the planned stay in their territory, where the length does not exceed three months in any six-month period. A Schengen visa may be granted to a third-country national who is subject to a visa requirement when crossing the external borders of the Member States.

The Schengen visa application may be submitted at:

  • The diplomatic mission or consular office of the Slovak Republic abroad
  • At the border crossing point of the SR*

(*Only for humanitarian reasons, if the foreigner proves that his/her entry is urgent and that he/she could not anticipate it in time or it is in the interest of the Slovak Republic; or if the foreigner is a family member of an EEA citizen and this fact is credibly proven).

Granting of visa at the border crossing point

The police authority may grant a short-stay or transit visa at the border crossing point for humanitarian reasons if the foreigner proves that his/her entry is urgent and that he/she  could not anticipate it in time or it is in the interest of the Slovak Republic; in these cases the validity of a short-term visa shall not exceed 15 days and a transit visa 5 days. Granting of visa at the Embassy of the Slovak Republic

An Embassy of the Slovak Republic abroad shall decide about the visa application within 30 days from the date of its acceptance. There is no legal claim on granting a visa. A visa does not automatically justify its holder to enter the territory of the Slovak Republic (it is necessary to demonstrate particulars necessary for compliance with the conditions of entry to the border control upon entry into the territory of the Slovak Republic, and the valid SR visa is only one of the conditions for entry – reference to Article 4 of Act No. 48/2002 Coll.). Submit the following with the Schengen visa application:

  • Proof of health insurance
  • Other documents (provision of accommodation, an invitation) not older than 90 days necessary for deciding on the application for granting of visa
  • Other documents according to the requirements of the ESR/GC SR

Do I Need a Visa to Go to Slovakia

To understand the visa requirements for the European Union, you must first understand the border laws, namely Schengen.

The Schengen Area is an area comprising 26 European countries that have officially abolished all passports and all other types of border control at their mutual borders. The area mostly functions as a single jurisdiction for international travel purposes, with a common visa policy.

The visa policy of the Schengen Area is set by the European Union and applies to the Schengen Area and to other EU member states except for Ireland.

The visa policy allows nationals of certain countries to enter the Schengen Area via air, land, or sea without a visa for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Nationals of certain other countries are required to have a visa either upon arrival or in transit.

As Slovakia is part of the Schengen area, you only need a visa, if your country is listed in the visa policy which you can find here .

A Schengen visa is a short-stay visa that allows a person to travel to any members of the Schengen Area , per stays up to 90 days for tourism or business purposes.

The Schengen visa is the most common visa for Europe. It enables its holder to enter, freely travel within, and leave the Schengen zone from any of the Schengen member countries. There are no border controls within the Schengen Zone.

However, if you are planning to study, work, or live in one of the Schengen countries for more than 90 days, then you must apply for a national visa of that European country and not a Schengen Visa.

Work Visa for Slovakia

You do not need a work visa to work in Slovakia. You do however need a special kind of visa, the National Visa (Visa D) to enter Slovakia if you are from a country not listed in the common visa policy of the Schengen area listed above.

This is because to work in Slovakia, you need to apply for Temporary Residence in Slovakia to be eligible for work here. This is done at the representative office.

Student Visa for Slovakia

The process with Student Visa is the same as with a work visa. The visa you need is called the National Visa, which you need to apply for Temporary Residence as part of your studies here.

TIP: Working in Slovakia as a foreigner has its pros and cons, as it does in any other country in the world. Check out the complete guide about getting work in Slovakia in the article below: Complete Guide: Getting Work in Slovakia As a Foreigner

Let's get started with the essentials of applying for a Slovakia tourist visa, ensuring you're well-prepared for your exciting journey ahead.

Documents required for Slovakia tourist visa

For a Slovakia tourist visa, the photo requirements are generally consistent with the standard Schengen visa photo criteria. Here are the detailed requirements for the photos that Indian applicants must submit:

  • Size : The photo must be 35mm x 40mm.
  • Quality : The photo should be of high resolution, clear and in focus.
  • Background : Must be plain and light-colored, preferably white, without any shadows or patterns.
  • Face Coverage : The applicant's face must cover 70-80% of the photo, which typically means that the face height from chin to crown should be between 32mm and 36mm.
  • Expression : Neutral expression with the mouth closed; no smiling, frowning, or raised eyebrows.
  • Eyes : Must be open and clearly visible. Glasses are allowed as long as they do not cause reflections or obscure the eyes. Tinted glasses and sunglasses are not permitted.
  • Headgear : Generally not allowed except for religious reasons. Even in such cases, it should not cover or cast shadows on the face.
  • Recent Photo : Must be taken within the last six months to reflect your current appearance.

These photos must be submitted along with the visa application, and it's crucial that they meet all the specified Slovakia tourist visa requirements to avoid delays in processing.

To apply for a Slovakia tourist visa as an Indian resident, you will need to go through the BLS International Visa Application Centre, which manages visa submission and processing. Here's a detailed guide to help you through the process:

Step 1: Know Your Visa Type

Before starting the application process, it's important to determine the right type of visa for your visit:

Short Term (Schengen) Visa : This visa is suitable for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period and can be issued for the following purposes:

  • Visiting Family or Friends
  • Participation in Cultural, Sports, or Religious Events
  • Medical Treatment
  • Study, Research, or Internships (up to 90 days)

Step 2: Fill in the Application Form

Application forms must be completed in English. You can usually download the form from the official website of the Slovakia Visa Application Centre or the Embassy of Slovakia in India.

Step 3: Book Your Appointment

Create an account on the Slovakia BLS Visa Application Centre's online portal. You will need to provide your email address and create a password.

Once you have an account, log in and follow the prompts to book an appointment at one of the visa application centres. Available centres in India are located in:

Step 4: Visit the Visa Application Centre

Attend your Slovakia visa appointment at the chosen visa application centre. Remember to bring all required documents, which include:

  • Completed and signed application form.
  • Valid passport (as per the Schengen visa requirements).
  • Recent passport-sized photos that meet the Schengen specifications.
  • Travel itinerary.
  • Proof of accommodation.
  • Financial means (e.g., bank statements, sponsorship letters).
  • Travel insurance covering medical emergencies with a minimum of €30,000.
  • Any other documents that support your visa application type (e.g., invitation letters, event registrations, proof of study or research).

Applicants above 12 years of age must submit their applications in person to provide biometric data. Children below 12 are exempt from biometric data submission and can have their applications submitted by their guardian or parent.

Step 5: Track Your Application

After submitting your application, you can track its status online through the visa application centre's website. You will need your application reference number and your date of birth to access your application status.

It's advisable for Indian citizens to apply for a Slovakia tourist visa well in advance of their planned travel date. Here are some guidelines on timing:

  • Earliest Application Time : You can apply up to 6 months before your intended date of travel.
  • Latest Application Time : Ideally, you should not apply later than 15 calendar days before your planned trip. This is because the Slovakia visa processing time can typically take up to 15 days, and sometimes longer in peak travel seasons or under special circumstances.
  • Recommended Application Time : To avoid any unforeseen delays and ensure a smooth travel experience, it's best to apply approximately 3 to 4 weeks before your travel date. This time frame provides a cushion for any potential delays in processing and allows you to address any issues that might arise during the visa application process.

Applying within this recommended timeframe can help ensure that you receive your visa in time for your travel without unnecessary stress or urgency.

When applying for a Slovakia Schengen visa, it's important to understand the associated costs. Below is a detailed breakdown of the Slovakia tourist visa fees, applicable in Indian Rupees (INR), and based on the current exchange rates set by the Embassy of Slovakia.

Visa Fee Structure

  • Adults : INR 7,154
  • Children aged 6-12 : INR 3,577
  • Children under 6 : No fee

Additional Fees

  • Service Fee : An additional service fee of INR 358 (including VAT) is required for each application. This fee covers the operational costs of processing visa applications.

Payment Information

  • Visa fees must be paid directly to the bank account of the Embassy of Slovakia on the day of your visa appointment.
  • Applicants processing their visas through BLS International should pay the visa fee at the application center.
  • The fee conversion from Euros to INR is adjusted monthly according to the exchange rate provided by the embassy staff at the time of application.

All visa fees, including the service fee, are non-refundable, regardless of the outcome of the visa application or if you withdraw the application.

Standard Processing Time

  • 15 Working Days : Once the Embassy of Slovakia receives your completed application—including all original documents, biometric data, and the visa fee—it typically takes about 15 working days to process. It's important to note that the transit time for documents between the Visa Application Centre and the Embassy is not included in these 15 days.

Possible Extensions

  • Up to 45 Calendar Days : In some cases, the Slovakia visa processing time can be extended to 45 calendar days. This extension is usually due to the need for additional scrutiny of the visa application.

Teleport’s Expert Tip

Yes, it is possible to extend a short-stay visa in Slovakia under exceptional circumstances. A visa may be extended for up to 90 days within any 180-day period if specific conditions are met. Extensions are granted by the appropriate police department and are considered if a foreign national finds themselves unable to leave the Slovak Republic due to compelling reasons such as natural disasters, humanitarian grounds, or serious personal reasons.

Applicants seeking an extension should prepare to demonstrate the necessity of their request with appropriate evidence supporting their claims. This process ensures that those genuinely in need due to unforeseen circumstances can legally extend their stay without complications.

If your Schengen visa application is refused, annulled, or revoked, you have the right to be informed in writing through a standard form which will include reasons for the decision and information on how to appeal.

How to Appeal:

  • Where to Appeal: You can file an appeal at the diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate) that issued the initial decision.
  • Content of the Appeal: Your appeal should clearly state your identity, point out what you believe is incorrect in the initial decision, and highlight any discrepancies with the legal regulations. The appeal must be written in Slovak or accompanied by an official translation.
  • Deadline for Filing an Appeal:
  • Regular cases: Within 15 days from receiving the decision.
  • Family members of EU/EEA or Swiss citizens: Within 30 days from receiving the decision.
  • Administrative Fee: An appeal requires an administrative fee of EUR 80, payable at the embassy or consulate where you are filing the appeal. If the fee is not paid, the appeal process will be suspended.
  • Outcome: If your appeal is successful, the administrative fee will be reimbursed.

Special Considerations:

  • Standard regulations on administrative procedures do not apply to visa appeal proceedings, except in cases involving family members of EU/EEA or Swiss citizens.
  • Decisions made by the diplomatic mission are subject to judicial review, meaning they can be challenged in court.

This appeal process provides a structured way for applicants to challenge visa decisions that they believe to be unjust or incorrect.

The processing time for the tourist application is dependent on the validity of the permit, the number of applications at the embassy, as well as your previous travel history. Normally, it takes around 15 working days to process your application. However, this can sometimes even take up to 30 days or 60 days in certain extreme conditions. As a result, it is suggested that you apply for a visa well in advance.

The application fees for this tourist permit is dependent upon the foreign currency exchange rates, as well as the embassy. Apart from the application fee, there will be biometric charges, delivery charges, as well as any service charges levied by the VAC. As a result, you must check the exact amount before starting the application.

Once you have submitted the application at one of the VACs, it is then forwarded to the Embassy of the Slovak Republic for processing. Note that even though you have submitted the application at a VAC, the processing is solely in the hands of the embassy. The VAC has absolutely no say in the processing. And cannot influence in any circumstances.

If your visa has been approved, you can collect it directly from the VAC, or have it delivered to you for an additional charge.

You can perform the Slovakia tourist visa status tracking by clicking here and entering your reference number and date of birth. Alternately, you can contact your travel agency to know the status.

Once you have received your passport with the visa back, you must keep in mind the following points to ensure a hassle-free journey.

  • Keep in mind the expiry date, the duration of stay, as well as the number of entries mentioned on the visa sticker. You must not stay longer than the permitted duration.
  • Carry all the travel documents while travelling. You will be denied entry into Slovakia without this.
  • Ensure that you travel to Slovakia within 6 months of the visa issue date, or as mentioned in the Schengen sticker. After this date, your permit will become invalid and you will not be able to enter the country.
  • While you are travelling within the country, ensure that you always carry a copy of your travel documents with you.
  • While you are on a tourist permit, you cannot take part in paid work for a Slovakian company or establishment.
  • You will not be able to extend the tourist visa under any normal conditions
  • You can move freely within the Schengen zone with the tourist visa.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can i extend my slovakia schengen tourist visa.

It is not possible to extend the Slovakian permit under normal conditions as it is a Schengen short term category. However, in certain cases such as a Force Majeure, or other humanitarian reasons, you may be granted an extension. In all other cases, you must not try to extend the visa and must leave the Slovak Republic before expiry.

After Expiring My Slovakia Tourist Visa, How Long Can I Stay?

After you have expired the Slovakian permit, you are not supposed to stay back in the country for any amount of time. As per the immigration laws, you must leave the country before the expiry date. Staying back after this period is considered as an offence, and can get you deported, and in some other cases even be banned from entering the Schengen zone again.

What is the Medical Test for Slovakia Schengen Tourist Visa?

Since the tourist permit is issued only for a short duration of fewer than 90 days, there are no mandatory medical test requirements. The long term D categories will require medical tests as per the individual type. Either way, it is recommended that you get a health checkup before travelling to a foreign country.

Can I Convert My Slovakia Schengen Tourist Visa into a Work permit?

No, it is not possible to convert any of the Slovakian Schengen category permits into another type. You are also not allowed to take part in paid work while you are on this permit. You can take part in unpaid voluntary work. If you do require to work, you must apply for a visa once you are back in India.

Can I Travel to other Schengen and European countries on a Slovakia Tourist permit?

Yes, you are permitted to travel to other Schengen countries on this. Being a Schengen and EU country, Slovakia participates in a visa-free agreement with other Schengen countries. However, you can only travel to European countries that are also a part of the Schengen. Despite this, there are a few non-European countries that allow you to enter them with a Schengen visa. Eg:- Croatia.

How many days before the trip should I apply for a Slovakia Tourist permit?

As per the embassy. it takes around 15 working days to process the application under normal conditions excluding the time taken for transit. As a result, it is suggested that you apply at least 15 days in advance of the date of travel. However, you are not allowed to apply for more than 3 months before the travel date.
