The 10 best experiences you can have in Peru

From hiking the Inca Trail to surfing on the north coast, here are the best experiences in Peru © Cavan Images / Getty Images

Peru may be known as one of the cradles of ancient civilization, but its topography also makes it a wonderland of adventure.

The icy mountain peaks of the Andes draw trekkers and climbers, the untamed desert coast is lapped by world-class waves for surfers and for explorers, there’s the Amazon – a vast mass of wetlands and rainforest brimming with monkeys, macaws and slinky, rare felines.

Gear up – Peru is a wild ride! Make the most of your trip with our guide to the country's very best experiences.

1. Hike the Inca Trail

A winding footpath climbs from the depths of the Urubamba Valley , through vaporous cloud forests, alongside the ruins of ancient way stations. For the Incas, this roadway was the main entry point to the exquisite estate of Machu Picchu .

For the thousands of travelers who hike the trail every year, it is a pilgrimage – a rugged four-day trek through sumptuous scenery and the final stop is the most spectacular archaeological site in Peru.

Planning tip:  If planning to go during high season (June to September) be sure to purchase your entry ticket to the Inca citadel online and in advance, as waiting to do so in person can run the risk of tickets being sold out.

2. Spend a night on an island in Lake Titicaca

According to Andean belief, Lake Titicaca is the birthplace of the sun. Lay your eyes on the sapphire-colored waters of South America’s largest lake and it’s hard not to feel a certain magic.

Spending the night on one of the floating islands is the best way to experience this place – life in its small rural settlements is lived according to the rhythm of the seasons. The best part? Sunset, surrounded by the lake’s gleaming waters.

3. Kayak through the Amazon rainforest

The Amazon Basin is known for its intense biodiversity and riotous rainforest wilderness. Parque Nacional Manu protects one of its wildest, most remote corners.

Located at the watershed of the Rio Manu, one of the many tributaries that eventually leads to the Amazon River, this wet web of rivers is a feast for wildlife spotting – from tapirs to ocelots to flocks of brilliant, cackling macaws.

Planning tip: Keep in mind that visiting during the high water season (December to May) provides more possibilities to navigate through small tributaries by kayak, whereas the low water season (June to November) is ideal for trekking through the rainforest.

4. Trek the Andes

The Cordillera Blanca , a majestic mountain range at the heart of Peru, can make the most devoted couch potato want to strap on a pack and go.

A network of craggy peaks covered in dollops of gleaming white snow draws dedicated high-altitude trekkers who wind through alpine lakes and diminutive Andean villages. If the altitude doesn’t take your breath away, the vistas certainly will.

Planning tip:  From Lima , take an eight-hour bus ride to the mountain town of  Huaraz – spending a night or two here will help you adjust to the elevation. You’ll find plenty of guides offering treks around the Cordillera Blanca of all lengths and levels of difficulty. Whether it’s the Laguna 69-day hike starting in Cebollapampa, the popular four-day Santa Cruz trek, or the grueling week-long Alpamayo Base Camp trek (both starting in Vaqueria), all of the options are scenic adventures.

A photo from the water looking at a rust colored, desert coastline dotted with birds. The landmass is framed by a blue sky and rippling water.

5. Look for wildlife on Islas Ballestas

Off the Paracas Peninsula , on the country’s southern coast, the small rocky outcroppings known as the Islas Ballestas don’t look like much from a distance. But hop in a boat and you’ll see an array of wildlife: honking sea lions, preening Humboldt penguins and colonies of Peruvian boobies.

The islands are known as the "poor person’s Galápagos " with good reason – they're spectacular but won't break your budget. On your way back to shore – surely to lunch on ceviche or parihuela (a seafood soup) – ponder the mysterious El Candelabro geoglyph whose origins and meaning are still unknown.

6. Descend into the majestic Cañón Del Colca

The Cañón Del Colca , a four-hour drive from  Arequipa , is a wonderland of Andean panoramas: a deep canyon studded with idyllic villages and mountainsides carved by ancient terraces. Oh, and did we mention the condors that soar on the wind currents?

From Chivay, visitors can explore the canyon on short day hikes or even trek to its floor (some 1219m/4000ft down from the trailhead) and back up again before nightfall. However, it’s recommended to soak in the scenery (and perhaps the hot springs) over the course of a few days.

Planning tip: There’s one thing no traveler should miss while here – the local delicacy known as chupe de camarones , a spicy shrimp bisque.

Two surfers walk out onto a rust-colored rock towards the surf at sunset. There are several other surfers already in the sea.

7. Go surfing along the north coast

Peru’s lengthy coastline – more than 3000km (1864 miles) long – offers a veritable buffet of experiences for the surfing set, with big swells and uncrowded breaks.

For the best curls, wave riders head north up the coast from Lima to the languid settlements of Huanchaco and Chicama, both of which lie just outside of Trujillo (an hour-long flight or an eight-hour bus ride from Lima).

Planning tip:  For guaranteed sun, take it further north to Máncora , where surf, seafood, and the slow pace of life go perfectly together.

8. Visit the mysterious ruins of Kuélap

The Andes are dotted with the remnants of ancient cities. Kuélap ranks among the most magnificent – a walled citadel built by the Chachapoyas people on the crest of a mountain in the northern Peruvian cloud forest.

The views of the Utcubamba Valley are staggering, the ruins are unusual and the journey here through timeless rural settlements is unforgettable.

Planning tip:  There are three options to get to the top of Kuélap – by car (a two-hour drive from Chachapoyas), by foot (a six-hour trek round trip, beginning in Tingo Viejo), or a 20-minute cable car ride.

9. Board down the giant sand dunes of Huacachina

Huacachina , a tiny oasis in the southern Peruvian desert, offers one of the country’s more unusual adrenaline rushes – the opportunity to motor to the top of a dune the size of a small building, strap on a board, then fly down the face of a towering wall of sand.

Not up for boarding? Take on the dunes in a buggy instead. Sitting at any of the bars or restaurants that line the lagoon may be your chance to hear of mermaids, Inca princesses and forlorn lovers – all featured in the local legend of Huacachina's origins.

10. Soar over the ancient Nazca Lines

One of the earth’s greatest mysteries sits quietly on the arid Peruvian coast. The  Nazca Lines  consist of more than 70 ancient glyphs of animals and other shapes that are so big they can only be seen from the air. No one knows their purpose.

For an incredible out-of-body experience, soar in a light aircraft over these pre-Columbian pictograms in the early morning hours.

Our top 5 things to do in Peru

Our Peru guided tours will reveal the best of Peru, from the mysteries of Machu Picchu to ancient Andean weaving and vibrant local markets.

Larco Museum

Located in an 18th-century vice-royal building in Lima, the Larco Museum houses an excellent collection of pre-Columbian artefacts. You’ll take a journey through Peru’s history, with chronological galleries that display 5,000 years of pre-Columbian history, including ceramics, jewellery, crowns, masks, garments and gold vases.

One of the top museums on the continent, Museo Inka is an incredible showcase of the Inca Empire. You can spend hours immersing yourself in the world of the Incas, with rooms full of crockery, textiles, jewellery, goldwork, models, ancient mummies and the world’s largest collection of queros (ceremonial wooden drinking vessels).

Gold Museum of Peru

The Gold Museum of Peru is a fantastic display of Peruvian gold craftsmanship. There are thousands of items from centuries of Peruvian history, including the earflaps and bracelets of the Vicus, the belts and earrings of the Frias, the masks and wristbands of the Nazca and the crowns of the Chancay.

Best museums in Peru

Our guided trips to Peru will reveal the country’s rich history through the top museums, from ancient Peruvian goldwork to the wondrous world of the Inca Empire.

Chifa is a Peruvian word used to describe a Chinese and Peruvian fusion style of cooking. Influenced by a wave of Chinese immigration in the late 19th century, chifa is now one of the most popular types of food in Peru. We recommend trying Pato Cuarto Tiempos and Arroz Chaufa.

Anticuchos can be traced all the way back to the Inca Empire, and today they’re one of the most beloved dishes found in street stalls and restaurants all over Peru. They’re a tasty meat skewer usually made with beef, and they’re served with bread or boiled potato on the end of the skewer.

Causa Rellena

A traditional potato dish of Peru, causa rellena is made from layers of spiced yellow mashed potatoes, tuna, chicken, avocado, black olives, mayonnaise and hard-boiled egg. This delicious dish was first made by women for the soldiers during the Pacific War in 1879, when food was hard to come by.

Best food in Peru

Peruvian cuisine is wonderfully diverse and our Local Specialists will show you the best places to try everything from traditional meat skewers to Chinese style chifa.

Peru Attractions & Landmarks Guide

top peru trips

Peru is probably best known for Machu Picchu, a major destination for multi-day trekking tours. But Peru is also home to the Amazon Basin, historic Spanish colonial-era cities, the boisterous capital Lima, and a share of 12,500-foot-high Lake Titicac a , with its host of artificial islands and bird life. Many travelers also combine trips to Peru with a visit to the Galapagos.

Peru: The name conjures up images of majestic natural wonders, deep canyons, Amazonian wildlife , superlative lakes, sacred valleys, and, of course, Machu Picchu - the Lost City of the Incas.

This is all for good reason -- Peru provides a little bit of everything, especially for the adventurous traveler. Few destinations captivate like Peru or offer such a diverse array of experiences packed into such a small country.

World-renowned Archaeological Treasures

Peru is home to one of the world’s most famous ruins: Machu Picchu . Nestled high in the Andean mountains, this nearly impenetrable site is a relic of a bygone Incan Empire, and is sure to captivate you with its physical impressiveness and the mystery surrounding the site. As you walk the sacred steps up to the former citadel, hanging on a dramatic cliff side, you’ll take in mountain vistas of rivers, waterfalls, and the ruins themselves for a memory you’ll cherish for life.

Whether you climb the mighty Andean spine across the legendary Inca trail, or sit in luxury aboard a classic train traversing the Sacred Valley, getting to Machu Picchu is half the experience. Traveling from the vibrant city of Cusco, a destination in its own right, to Machu Picchu you will find captivating Incan sites, quaint towns, archaeological gems, and natural wonders.

The Incans were not the only ones who established a foothold on these sacred lands. Go down from the mountains to the desert beaches to discover enigmatic pre-Incan civilizations. Encounter the beautiful tombs of the Moche civilization in Chiclayo, fly over the Nazca lines and ponder their mystery, or explore the UNESCO-listed Chan Chan –the former capital of the Chimu empire and the largest adobe city in the world.

Visiting Machu Picchu in Peru

While there is much to see in Peru, it is undeniable that Machu Picchu is one of the country's biggest attractions. This magnificent site high in the Andes is a classic bucket list item, and well worth seeing once.

There are   many ways to get to Machu Picchu . One of them most popular still is the Inca Trail. The Inca Trail is a trek along the Andean peaks and valleys to get to the specific spot of Machu Picchu, and although it is difficult, this hike is manageable for most able bodied and relatively fit travelers, and an incredible experience.

The trail takes 4 to 5 days to complete and you’ll be surrounded by spectacular scenery and history, brought to life by your guide the entire way. Historians suspect the Inca Trail was established for spiritual journeys, and even visitors traveling to Machu Picchu find the trek to have deeper meaning.

If you’re planning to hike the Inca Trail , be sure you purchase your permit into the park well ahead of time. They sell out extremely fast, and a limited number of people (500) are permitted on the trail per day. This includes porters and guides. Six months in advance is a good bet to ensure yourself a spot. It is also worth noting that you cannot hike the trail without a guide. Most large tour companies offer a Machu Picchu trek, so you have a lot of choice. Use Stride’s filtering tools to find the right tour size for you.

However, travelers are beginning to discover the other ways you can hike to Machu Picchu, which include the Lares Trek and Salkantay Trek. The Lares Treks is comparable , difficulty wise to the Inca Trail, but Salkantay is quite a bit more challenging, both in length and type.

Tours to Machu Picchu begin in Cusco, where you can take a few days to acclimate to the altitude, as well as get an introduction to Inca history in preparation for your journey into history.

If you’re not hiking, you will take one of three rail journeys from Cusco to Aguas Calientes. There are different price points, but if you’re willing to splurge, the Belmond Hiram Bingham train is well worth the price. Drift through the Sacred Valley in luxury, while gazing out at the historic landscape through large windows.

Aguas Calientes is the main hub for travelers going to Machu Picchu, about 15 minutes away from the site by bus. It is a good idea to stay in Aguas Calientes for a few days. Let yourself relax and not worry about seeing all of Machu Picchu in one fell swoop.

Use one day to catch the first bus after waiting in line at 4am to see the sunrise, but use your second day to go later. If you have time, don’t pass up a visit to the hot springs (Aguas Calientes literally translates to “hot water”.

The Diverse Natural Beauty of Peru

Though Peru is a small and navigable country, it boasts more biodiversity than the entire North American continent. This boils down to one major feature the country has access to: the Amazon Rainforest. Peru is the perfect base for the world’s most impressive rainforest: the mighty Amazon. Among many lodging options are eco-lodges nestled deep in the jungle, providing opportunities to encounter colorful toucans and macaws, howler monkeys, pink river dolphins, and perhaps even an elusive jaguar.

Beyond the Amazon, you can tour Manu National Park and the unique moss-covered Peruvian Yunga region, home to some of the world’s best birding. Afterwards, you can head toward the northern beaches to park a tent in beautiful sun-splashed Punta Sal or catch a wave at Huancayo, the world’s very first surfing beach.

Then of course there’s the unparalleled beauty of the Andes Mountains. There are many ways to discover the incredible Andes, from multi day hikes along historic trails, to treks through ancient villages.

Dotted throughout with ruins of ancient settlements, the Peruvian Andes are a pathway through history. Llamas roam the hills and native Andean people live here as they have for centuries. Nothing quite achieves the separation from the modern world like a trip through the Andes.

Peru Adventure Travel

Like much of South America, Peru is a natural destination for adventure travel - but not just of the zipline variety. In Peru, you can tour Lake Titicaca , the legendary lake on top of the world with it's intriguing customs and legends . Here, you’ll tour Puno’s fascinating floating artificial islands, and you can even stay in a freshwater island resort. These a breathtaking high-altitude retreats come complete with superlative sunsets, and allow you to experience Peru in a truly unique way.

Of course there’s the famous trek to Machu Picchu along the Inca Trail. This adventure is once in a lifetime and on the bucket list of many a traveler - both young and old. The Inca Trail is achievable for most healthy and moderately physically fit people, and an adventure in which you’ll follow in the footsteps of explorers and the ancient Inca Empire to reach the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu.

If, however, you are unable to trek, or less interested in 4 hard days of hiking through altitude up treacherous hills and camping on hard ground, there are other ways to reach Machu Picchu! Consider traveling on a rail journey through the beautiful Sacred Valley .

This is a very popular option for older travelers or those with young children. It’s also a good idea if you’re only in Peru a short time. You will still get an adventure and a half as you arrive in Aguas Calientes and eagerly await the bus to Machu Picchu.

For those who prefer more vigorous outdoors adventure, Peru also offers the unique Colca Canyon. Twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, the Colca Canyon is replete with Incan terraces and natural beauty. For incredible photo ops, go to Cruz del Condor, a peak where flocks of the normally reclusive Andean condor swarm at sunrise. Visit on a day hike or some tours operate multi day treks through the incredible landscape.

Trekking enthusiasts looking for opportunities in Peru beyond Machu Picchu, should absolutely explore the Cordillera Blanca mountain range. Wind your way through tiny Andean villages and take in breathtaking views of lakes and sheer rock faces.

There is also an area of Peru known as the “poor man’s Galapagos.” This is Islas Ballestas, where you can travel to see incredible diverse wildlife, including some similar species to those you will experience in the Galapagos . These include penguins, sea lions, and Peruvian boobies.

Cultural Discoveries in Peru

Immersing yourself in Peru also means discovering its vibrant cities. Lima , Peru’s capital, offers fascinating museums and “peñas,” lively traditional dance halls that hold weekly Peruvian dance shows. Though travelers should remain cautious in Lima, which is still a big city in a developing country, a tour in particular you will find more peace of mind than as a solo traveler.

For a different urban experience, a tour of Peru could include the magnificent white city of Arequipa and its Spanish colonial treasures. Arequipa is an architectural wonder, famous for its intact 16th century churches, and home to Monesterio de Santa Catalina, a “city within a city,” whose pastel walls and priceless frescoes make it one of the most beautiful convents in the world.

Cusco is another of Peru’s exciting cities, though often thought of as a mere stepping stone to Machu Picchu. However, it is so much more. Travelers are discovering the delights of Cusco , which include its long and fascinating history as the capital of the Inca Empire, followed by the Spanish occupation and colonization.

Festivals in Peru

In Peru, culture is never far off. Every weekend, towns across the country have celebrations and festivals where you can watch somber religious processions followed by raucous folk marching bands.

Deep ties to folklore from many native tribes, as well as many Spanish influenced customs make Peru one of the best destinations for celebrations, and parades.

Some Peruvian festivals you might encounter while on a tour in Peru include:

1. Carnaval, March : Perhaps the best known festival, Carnaval is celebrated throughout South America, taking place in the days leading up to the Catholic holiday of Lent. Carnaval is a bright and vibrant multi-day celebration. One of the best places in Peru to experience this festival is Cajamarca in Northern Peru, where traditional dances and ancient traditions are in the forefront.

2. Fiesta de la Vendimia, March : this is a traditional wine festival, which takes place in Ica, a small town on Peru’s southern coast. Complete with grape stomping events, tastings, music and dancing, it’s a can’t miss event for wine enthusiasts.

3. Fiesta de la Cruz, May : This is the “festival of the cross” and while it has significant religious meaning and undertones, like much of the festivals in Peru, it’s more about celebration than sombor devotion. Go just to see the mysterious “scissor dancers” a tradition that harkens back to the 16th century, connected to resistance to Spanish rule.

4. Fiesta del Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun), June : The ancient Inca were obsessed with the Sun, and this festival is directly related to some of their more serious beliefs. Celebrated on the winter solstice every year, this festival involves colorful traditional dress, parades, and performances to native music and using native instruments, all presented in worship to the sun. If you’re in Cusco on June 24th, this is an event not to be missed.

5. Virgen del Carmen, July : In the small town of Paucartambo, one of the more raucous festivals is held. With three days of drinking, dancing, eating, music and singing in the traditional language of Quechua. This is a celebration that draws people by the thousands. Go for the intense energy as people go through the streets wearing scary costumes, and masks. Often the celebrations end up at the cemetery.

6. Puno week, November : Puno is known as the “folklore capital of Peru” so it’s no wonder it has one of the most popular festivals. This particular week-long festival is to celebrate the Amerindian roots in the area. An enormous procession happens from Lake Titicaca into the center of Puno, with loud music, dancing, and revelry.

Peruvian Amazon and Rainforest Tours

The imposing Amazon is one of the longest rivers in the world, and winds its way through six countries, including Bolivia, Venezuela, Brazil , and Ecuador . Peru is it’s source, and one of the most ecologically diverse portions of the Amazon River  - 60% of Peru’s landscape belongs to the Amazon, separated into two distinct ecological regions, and home to 5% of the country's population.

Amazon river cruises   are quickly becoming a popular “adventurous” mode of travel for river cruisers. It’s one of the best ways to see the world in comfort and cover a lot of ground.

When considering your tour to the Peruvian Amazon rainforest , there are a few things to keep in mind. The high water season in Peru’s Amazon is from December through May. The low water season lasts from June through November. Rain is common throughout the year, but heaviest in December to May.

You can visit the Peruvian Amazon at any time of year, but if you choose to go during a wet period, your chances of shore excursions could be limited, due to flooding and difficulty navigating through muddy paths. Mosquitos also love this time of year, and Peru is a Zika zone, so be very careful when traveling during wet weather. Wear lots of bug spray and wear long sleeves and pants.

If you choose to take a Peru river cruise in the dry season (June through November), you will have much more opportunity to disembark and explore the jungle. However, some of the smaller creeks and byways that are navigable during the rainy season are now inaccessible to river boat vessels. So you won’t have the chance to explore “off the beaten path” (or river as the case may be) if you travel during this time of year.

Birding Tours in Peru

Peru is an extremely popular destination for birding, particularly in the Amazon. Home to nearly 2,000 separate species, including 120 rare species only found in Peru, it’s a birding enthusiasts dream destination.

To see some of Peru’s incredible aviary creatures, plan a long birding tour where you can visit several habitat types, as well as increase your chances of seeing the rarer species. Some birding tours to Peru are over two weeks long, providing ample time to see the country and learn about the local wildlife and cultures.

Take a birding tour to discover such elusive varieties as the predatory Black-Collared Hawk, the male Golden-Headed Manakin, with his oddly stark colors of gold and black, the prehistoric looking Hoatzin, which for laymen may be confused with a Quetzel. Of course you’ll see plenty of Amazonian Macaws, with their bright red, yellow, and blue feathers, and Toucans of which there are 40 different species.

Food in Peru

The local cuisine in Peru is generally excellent - combining elements from the coast (seafood), Andean (pre-Hispanic dishes), Amazonian (palm hearts and other exotic foods), and Spanish colonial influences. Adventurous eaters may even try a plate of Cuy, a Peruvian national dish centered around roasted Guinea pig.

Ceviche is another classic national dish in Peru. This delectable concoction has been copied and interpreted all around the world, but finds it’s roots in Peru, where simplicity is what showcases the fresh, flavorful ingredients. Ceviche is traditionally made with cubed chunks of raw fish, marinated in citrus juice for up to three hours (during this process, the fish becomes “chemically cooked” so is not technically raw when it’s served), and finished with fresh lime. Some of the best ceviche in Peru can be found in the capital, Lima, where it is served with cold sweet potatoes or corn.

Potatoes are a staple in Peruvian cuisine, as the country is home to nearly 2000 varieties. Whether you enjoy potatoes, stuffed, fried, boiled, sliced, sweet, hot or cold, you will find them in Peru. Peru is mostly a coastal nation, so another staple food item is seafood. Not only used in ceviche, as described above, but also made using many different regional methods, from stews to steamed.

Cocktail enthusiasts will enjoy the history of Pisco that can be found throughout Peru. Originally concocted by Spanish settlers in the 16th century, this brandy like drink is made similar to wine. The other major country known for Pisco is Chile, and both countries put their own unique spin on the drink.

Peru chooses to non dilute their offering. Chile is the older official producer of Pisco (official regions were declared in 1931 - 1991 in Peru), but Peru has certainly paved a way in Pisco production. Used in a lot of modern mixology, it’s a classic drink for travelers visiting Peru.

The Language in Peru

Peru is a multilingual country, the official language of which is Spanish, however many diverse native languages are used as well. Those that speak these languages are typically bilingual in Spanish. In the main tourist areas, such as Machu Picchu and Cusco, English is fairly widely spoken, however when you venture farther afield, you’ll have an easier time communicating in Spanish.

While not a full blown dialect, Peruvian Spanish differs slightly from European Spanish. A result of native words creeping into everyday speech and local pronunciation differences. The most well known indigenous language is Quechua, many variations of which is spoken by the various Quechua peoples.

It is significant in that it pre-dates the Inca Empire and is still spoken today, despite the Spanish conquest in the 1600s.  Peru offers a dizzying array of options, Stride is here to guide you toward the best guided group tours to experience Peru’s dynamic sights, sounds, and flavors. Isn’t it time you said “Hola!” to Peru?

Following the meeting your Intrepid guide will take you on an orientation walk around Cusco.  You’ll visit the facade of Qoricancha temple, the local San Pedro market, the main square, past the 12 Angled Stone, Regocijo Square and San Blas Square. Finally you’ll visit the Chocolate museum where there will be an opportunity to sample a hot chocolate made from local cacao beans. This might be a good opportunity to purchase some gifts or souvenirs. There’s a small store where you’ll find various handicrafts and a variety of artisanal chocolate products. Tonight is free. Your guide will be able to recommend some good places to eat!

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

This trip visits places that are at high altitude, and as a result some people can suffer from altitude sickness, regardless of age or physical health. Please see the ‘Health’ section of the trip notes for more important information on this.

This morning starts with a pick-up from your hotel. Pick-up will take place will be between 07:00 and 07:20 in the hotel foyer. The Intrepid representative will confirm this with you at the briefing on day 1. In Cusco some of the streets are quite narrow and many have strict parking restrictions so it's likely you will need to take a short walk with a representative to where the bus is.

Head out to the Sacred Valley on a shared bus service. Known as Wilcamayo by the Incas, this lush and fertile valley has long been the main source of food for the high Andes. Maize crops can be seen surrounding the river and covering the terraces carved high into the valley walls.

The first stop is at Pisac ruins from where you will enjoy a lovely view of the Pisac valley and the town below. Explore the market and maybe barter for a few items yourself before heading out to cross the Valley. Leaving Pisac behind you find yourself driving through amazingly fertile lands that are one of the main agricultural areas in the surroundings and that played an important part during Inca times.

We have a stop along the way to enjoy our lunch at Urubamba town and then continue approximately 20-25 minutes until we reach the town of Ollantaytambo, one of the few, if not the only, living example of a city plan that has remained the same for many centuries.

Here you’ll visit the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo, and try to figure out how those terraces were build or the big boulders that are part of the temple of the Sun got to the place where you can find them now, the top of the mountain.

Your guide will point you in the direction of the train station where you will wait for the departure of your train that takes you to Aguas Calientes. (Please note that depending on the time of your train, if your departure time is later then you may have some time to explore the town) A 1.5 hour train ride through the winding Urubamba Valley takes us to Aguas Calientes, nestled in the cloud forest (2040m above sea level) at the foot of the magnificent Machu Picchu.

Upon arrival a representative will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel and give you the last instructions for your tour the very next day.

Overnight at Aguas Calientes hotel

  • Cusco - Half Boleto Turistico Pass (access to selected archaeological sites, transport & guides not included)

After an early breakfast, catch a bus to Machu Picchu (approx 30 minutes along a winding road). The first bus departs at around 6.30am. Please note that you will need to check out and leave your luggage on storage at the hotel while you visit Machu Picchu.

A local guide will take you on a 2 hour tour through the ruins. While it is thought Machu Picchu was built around 1440 as a country retreat for Incan nobility, there is evidence this had been a sacred site for much longer. Another school of thought is that this was an astronomical observatory. There is plenty of time to decide for yourself as you wander around the many temples, palaces and living quarters.

After taking advantage of the seemingly endless photo opportunities it is time to return to Cusco, travelling first by train to Ollantaytambo (approx 90 minutes) then a shared transfer to Cusco (approx 90 minutes).

Upon your arrival to Cusco your tour comes to an end. Please contact us if you need assistance with extra accommodation in Cusco.

The Only Peru Packing List You’ll Ever Need

Heading to cusco, lima, the amazon, machu picchu, and the sacred valley this list has everything you need to pack—and more..

  • Copy Link copied

Machu Picchu historic site in Peru, with clouds and few travelers visible

The historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu has an elevation of 7,970 feet, so packing layers is essential.

At 496,225 square miles, Peru is the third-largest country in South America and the 19th-largest in the world—almost twice the size of Texas. It is a country of extraordinary diversity, from the Amazon rainforest to the ancient Incan citadel of Machu Picchu. And then there’s the dining and nightlife.

But all of that can pose a problem when you’re packing. What do you absolutely need to be prepared without being overprepared? To answer, here’s Afar’s essential Peru packing list, complete with packing tips.

Luggage and organizational accessories

Most tour companies don’t restrict the amount of luggage you can bring, but if you are doing any multiday hikes or trips outside of cities, a larger backpack or duffel is your best bet. Same goes for the Amazon: You’ll likely be traveling by small rickshaw to narrow, low-lying riverboats, and soft-sided waterproof bags are best (both for ease of carrying and for protection from the elements).

There is no shortage of worthy travel backpacks out there. But the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L is my go-to travel bag—a carry-on, duffel, and backpack all in one—and it weighs a mere three pounds. This summer, the brand debuted a slightly larger version (38L) with wheels , which is an excellent option for those wanting to avoid carrying a bag on their back. A packable day pack or tote, like the Baggu Cloud Bag , is also good to bring.

When packing, I also used packing cubes to help divide my trip into the parts I knew I’d need certain clothes for: fancier in Lima and Cusco, and outdoor gear for Machu Picchu and the Amazon.

Essential travel documents

Peru requires preregistration for tours of Machu Picchu, so booking before you travel is essential. (Once tickets are purchased the Ministry of Culture site , these dates and times cannot be changed, though you can buy as many entrance tickets as you want.) Bring printed copies of your tickets along with your passport; access to the site will not be granted without them.

A complete list of what to bring of what to bring on any trip to Peru:

  • Confirmation information for any flights, trains, or tours you take—these are often electronic documents, so make sure they are accessible on your mobile device or any relevant apps. If you are traveling somewhere with limited electricity and signal, like the Amazon, download and screenshot important documents on your devices, and be sure to have printed copies.
  • Emergency documents, such as your health insurance card, travel insurance information, and emergency contact
  • Wallet with credit cards and cash. The sol is the currency of Peru, and bills are produced in 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 soles. Many market vendors only accept cash, as do people selling wares on the side of the street, so it’s best to carry Peruvian soles with you. (And to have smaller bills, like 10s and 20s, which are easiest for smaller businesses to handle.) For the best rates, exchange dollars into soles on the ground in Peru. Head to a bank in Lima or Cusco and look for cambistas , or money changers, standing near the entrance by security guards. These men are wearing bright vests and will give you an exchange rate better than what you’ll get at a bank—just make sure the bills are not torn or marked.

Casual and active clothing to pack

Layers are your best friend in Peru, where temperatures and weather conditions fluctuate.

  • 3–4 shirts and T-shirts for everyday wear, like the Lorel Tee from Jungmaven , which arrives feeling soft and worn in
  • 1–2 tops or shirts for casual evenings
  • 2–3 pairs of pants or shorts for everyday wear
  • 1–2 pairs of pants for hiking, like the lightweight but durable Snow Peak FR Stretch Pants , which are water-repellent and have several hidden pockets and adjustable elastic at the ankles
  • 2–3 shirts for hiking. We’re fans of Outerknown’s long-sleeved sun shirts , made from recycled polyester and with UPF 50+ sun protection.
  • 1–2 sweaters—it can get chilly when the sun sets, so bring a sweater or two. Patagonia’s Better Sweater Fleece Vest is wonderful for layering.
  • Pajamas and loungewear
  • Underwear and socks (for both hiking and everyday)
  • A light hiking jacket or vest, like Helly Hansen’s breathable Fastpack Jacket
  • A light rain jacket . Weather can change on a dime; be prepared.

Dressier options to pack

Peru has some of the finest fine-dining restaurants in the world, including Kjolle, Maido, and Central; though there is no official dress code, most diners skip the shorts and wear smart-casual outfits. When packing, I chose outfits that could be dressed up or down, and could work as well for formal evenings as for a daytime café.

  • 1–2 dresses or skirts
  • 2–3 blouses
  • 1–2 pairs of slacks
  • 1 nice jacket or blazer

Eileen Fisher Crushed Silk Jewel Neck Tiered Dress Just as items in the overhead bin tend to shift during flight, clothes tend to become wrinkled after they enter a bag. The good news about this dress is that thanks to its crushed-silk material, wrinkles aren’t apparent—instead, they seem a part of the design. I got this dress in the Aegean color, fitting the bill for my friend’s wedding instructions to wear something colorful, but also giving me a dress I could wear for dinner service on the Belmond Andean Explorer , which I took from Cusco to Puno, a city on Lake Titicaca.

Silk Laundry Audrey Top and Bias Cut Pants A not-so-secret secret to packing? Items that will do double duty for you—and this set is a perfect example of that. Made of silk with a mud pattern (an homage to a UNESCO-recognized dyeing technique from the Hakka people of Southeast China), it was equally at home paired with some walking shoes and a baseball hat as it was out to an early dinner at Mauka , Pía León’s second (and newest) restaurant in Cusco. Hang it in the shower, and the wrinkles disappear.

Jungmaven Hermosa Dress On its own, this lightweight travel dress—made of hemp-jersey blend, and with a generous side slit for comfortable movement—is perfect for lounging around a lodge, bumming on the beach, or even wearing to bed. But paired with a clog and a summery jacket, it goes from simple to sophisticated.

Historic cities like Cusco have worn cobblestones, so it’s best to pack shoes with a strong grip that can be dressed up or down, like the Salomon XT-6 . Though lodges in the Amazon will supply boots for the mud and rain, having a pair of lightweight hiking boots is essential for trips in the Sacred Valley. And, as good for pairing with a dress as they are for sliding on and wearing around a lodge, travel clogs—which I’ve already waxed poetic about for Afar—are a versatile option. For my trip I brought the slim Calzuro classic clog, with a 1.5-inch heel and strong grip.

  • Walking or tennis shoes
  • Lightweight hiking boots (for women and men )
  • Travel clogs

A royal blue Calzuro clog shoe

Calzuro clogs are available in more than a dozen colors, including the royal blue seen here.

Accessories

  • A sun-protecting cap or hat. I love the AFO Hyperlight Cap from Janji , which is practically weightless and ready for the road—you can fold it, scrunch it, or toss it in your bag and it will come out as good as new.
  • Polarized sunglasses, like the Maho Positano shades, to reduce glare from intense sun
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Skin care products and other lotions
  • Eye drops and contact solution, plus contact solution case (if needed)
  • Shaving items
  • Feminine care products (if needed)
  • Sunscreen. Opt for reef-safe sunscreen like Thinksport or Australian Gold Botanical sunscreen—Hawai‘i and an increasing number of other destinations are banning sunscreen with toxic chemicals, including oxybenzone and avobenzone. Vertra, known for its mineral face sticks , is popular with swimmers, including 12-time Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin.

A basic first-aid kit

While you will be able to purchase first-aid supplies around Peru, chances are they’ll be more expensive than whatever you’d get at home. Even if you don’t think you’ll have a problem with motion sickness, consider tossing a pack of ginger chews into your bag just in case—they help with nausea. (Read more about how to beat motion sickness here .)

Altitude sickness is common in Peru, where altitudes average 5,100 feet (similar to Denver); popular areas like Machu Picchu (7,970), Cusco (11,155), and Lake Titicaca (12,500) are even higher. Before your trip, talk to your doctor about Diamox. Nonmedical treatments on the ground in Peru—like chewing coca leaves or drinking coca tea—are ubiquitous but bringing coca leaves back to the United States is against the law.

  • Painkillers
  • Any medications or sleep aids you take
  • Allergy medications
  • Anti-nausea medications, like over-the-counter Dramamine , or prescription medications, like the Transderm-Scop patch
  • Antidiarrheals
  • Antibiotic ointment
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Cleansing cloths. These are helpful for when there’s little to no running water and you still want to wipe off some of the sweat—and bug spray—from the day before crawling into bed.

You may also want

  • Mosquito repellent. Kinfield’s Golden Hour mosquito repellent is DEET-free and works. As a bonus, its mix of citronella, lemongrass, and clove actually smells good.
  • After-sun leave-in hair conditioner, like Sun Bum’s Revitalizing 3-in-1 Leave-In Treatment , which detangles, conditions, and protects hair from sun and salt water

Travel gear and electronics

With more and more destinations banning single-use plastics, it’s an increasingly good idea to BYO water bottle on any trip. We recommend bringing a water bottle for regular use and hikes—it’s especially important to stay hydrated, both in tropical places where you’ll sweat a lot and at high altitude. Water in Peru is not potable, and there will generally be signs reminding you of this, but hotels will have disposable water bottles and you can fill up that way, rather than lugging the plastic and wondering where to dispose of it.

  • Reusable water bottle
  • Travel coffee mug. The Fellow Carter Move mug is excellent. With a snap-in splash guard, it keeps drinks warm for 12 hours or cold for 24 hours. Toss it in your bag and go.
  • Laptop or e-reader
  • Universal travel adapter

Note: Given the remoteness of some locations in Peru, it’s best to download books and movies ahead of time.

  • Beach blanket
  • Binoculars. The Bushnell Legend 10x42mm Binoculars are a good entry-level set.
  • Headlamp. Practically essential for nighttime in the Amazon, when many lodges only have electricity for several hours and when headlamps or flashlights are required for navigation. The lightweight BioLite HeadLamp 800 Pro has eight different modes—including dimmable white spot, dimmable white flood, red night vision, and strobe—and will last about 7 hours on max power or up to 150 hours on low brightness.

7 Trips To Take After You Retire

  • Retirement doesn't equal old age - explore Machu Picchu and other bucket list destinations with newfound freedom.
  • Chase the Northern Lights as a retiree - more time on your hands means more chances to witness the breathtaking phenomenon.
  • Visit Australia and European rivers in retirement - explore freely without time constraints or work worries.

Going on amazing adventures and exploring the world is not something that young singles and couples have the market cornered on. Retirement is the perfect time to take the opportunity and journey to the places that bucket lists are made of. Not only is there more time to leisurely sightsee, but more often than not, there is more money to play around with after retirement, making travel more possible than ever before.

After retiring, there's a common belief that the only suitable trips involve cruising to Florida or choosing vacations with minimal activity. However, retirement doesn't diminish one's zest for life or necessarily indicate old age. It simply signifies having saved enough to live comfortably without needing full-time employment.

Because of this, just about any trip can be taken after retirement. The perfect retirement destination trip depends on the adventures retirees want to take and how long they want to be away from home.

Retirees Will Enjoy Staying At These 10 Best Hotels In The US

Explore the magic of machu picchu, the paths through machu picchu are relatively flat & more time can be spent in peru.

Machu Picchu is a magical ancient Incan city that leaves visitors wondering just how the UNESCO World Heritage Site was constructed. While some assert that Machu Picchu served as a sacred site for the Incans, others believe it was constructed for the civilization's royalty. Nonetheless, the fortress is truly a sight to behold.

The way that many choose to travel to Machu Picchu is via a multiday camping trip along the Inca Trail. This allows visitors to witness firsthand much of what the Incan people saw hundreds of years ago as they were constructing the citadel on the mountaintop. But, a mistake when visiting Machu Picchu is thinking this is the only way to get to Machu Picchu. One of the most popular ways to reach Machu Picchu is via train.

The train trip takes just under two hours to reach Machu Picchu. From there, a quick bus ride takes visitors to the gates of the ancient civilization. There are several trips up and down the mountain that are offered daily, which means there is no bad time to visit. However, it is recommended that as soon as a date is secured to come and visit, tickets are booked to ensure seats on the train.

Retirees will love traveling to Machu Picchu because the views from the ruins are unparalleled. The paths through the site are relatively flat, making it easy to navigate the area. And with no deadlines to get back to work, more time can be spent not only at the Incan site, but in Peru as well. This allows for more exploring and enjoying great food.

Choquequirao Vs Machu Picchu: Which Inca Site Is Worth A Trip?

Seek out the northern lights, view northern lights from many countries, crossing them off your bucket list.

The Northern Lights are on the bucket list for many when it comes to travel. For those who have never experienced them, they can be life-changing to experience if seen with the vivid greens, purples, pinks, and whites that appear directly overhead. But they can be elusive at times. This is why retirees are the perfect population to chase the Northern Lights, because they have more time to see them in all their glory.

Once the decision is made to journey to the Northern Lights, the biggest problem is deciding just where to travel to, to see them. Some of the best locations to witness the Northern Lights include :

With some of the best locations to see the Northern Lights located all over the world , the prices vary regarding how much it costs to see them on a tour. As such, the first choice is to choose a destination, then begin planning a trip of a lifetime to see the beautiful nighttime lights in the sky.

These Are The 10 Best Northern Lights Hotels Around The World

Discover the down under, retirees can leisurely explore australia, making it a great trip.

Australia is a country that is on many people's bucket lists. However, given how long it takes to travel there, it may not always be feasible to go given the time constraints of needing to get back to work. But, for those who are not punching a time clock, journeying to Australia can be done quite comfortably and without stress. Just the feelings of excitement to go on a trip of a lifetime.

When venturing to Australia, retirees have to narrow down what they want to see and what a reasonable amount of time there is to see it all. This will help to build a timetable and determine a budget that retirees are comfortable with to stay on budget while exploring the Land Down Under.

The great thing about Australia is that many of the outdoor attractions are free. And with so many options for visiting small towns in Australia , outdoor activities, historic sites, the Opera House, Sydney Bridge, and more, there is something for all retirees to enjoy when visiting Australia.

Cruise Through Europe

Cruise on a smaller ship for a longer stay and see places in europe many do not travel to when overseas.

Taking a cruise may sound like a fun thing for retirees to do. However, they may have taken a cruise before or do not have any interest in the ports cruise lines offer. If this is the case, retirees may want to consider a cruise through Europe instead. A cruise that is smaller, but ensures that passengers get to see everything a city has to offer and then some.

Why retirees may like cruising on the river versus the ocean is that the trip is much less choppy. This means fewer chances of getting seasick. The cruises also choose very walking-friendly destinations, meaning that transportation to a port will likely not be necessary. Perhaps the best part is that there are a variety of lengths for each cruise. As such, be it one week, 10 days, two weeks, or more, most travel requests can be accommodated. And with having more spare time than ever, exploring Europe is perfect for retirees. Some of the rivers that cruise ships travel on include :

There are several different cruise lines that travel on the rivers in Europe. Those lines include:

When it comes to choosing which cruise to take, it all comes down to what attractions passengers want to see. From wine country tours through France to life during medieval times and the Victorian era, seeing the birthplace of classical music, seeing UNESCO World Heritage sites, the beaches of Normandy, and so much more. The biggest problem retirees are going to have is where to go and for how long when cruising the rivers of Europe.

Go On A South African Safari

South africa has the infrastructure to take people directly from the airport to the national park with ease.

Africa is known for its amazing safaris. However, not all countries have the infrastructure to be able to get to the safari destination with ease. Something that can be difficult for retirees to navigate. But, for those who have their heart set on going on safari, they can do so in South Africa. This is because there is the infrastructure present where getting from the airport to the hotel or site of the expedition can be done with ease.

Kruger National Park is the location of the safari expedition in South Africa. There are accommodations that allow visitors to stay in the park, making going on safari convenient and allowing retirees to experience the animals at night. And because the accommodations are all-inclusive, there are no amenities missing.

Those who go on safari in Kruger National Park are also within driving distance of places like Cape Town and Victoria Falls. As such, retirees can go for the safari but can also enjoy other parts of Cape Town quite easily as well.

Island Hop In Greece

Retirees will land easily in athens and can go directly from their hotel to the tour of choice to explore the islands of greece.

Island hopping might sound exhaustive in Greece. However, it is one of the easiest things to do. With boats, catamarans, and ferries taking visitors from one island to the next, all retirees have to do is determine just what islands they want to see.

The great thing about Greece is that after landing in Athens, visitors are already at the location they need to be to start their island hopping tour. This means all retirees have to do is check into their hotel in Athens before beginning their adventures.

Some of the most popular islands that retirees will enjoy from the standpoint of history, beauty, and accessibility include:

Prices for tours start at $1,550.00 . Whether retirees have the time to see all the islands or just one set depends on the time they have allotted for their trip to Greece. But whatever the choice, it will be an adventure to remember.

Island Hopping Greece: 10 Islands To Visit, Ranked By Affordability

Explore north american national parks, most national parks are accessible by car.

The National Park System is something that can be overlooked when retirees are making plans to explore the world. But not only is it convenient to visit, but with the variety of hiking trails, amenities, and different attractions offered at every park, a tour of bucket list sites at national parks is a perfect trip to take after retirement.

There are nearly 90 national parks in North America . From white sandy beaches to volcanic ranges, waterfalls, historic sites, exotic animals, redwood trees, vast desert, and so much more, there is literally something for everyone to see. As such, retirees can plan a trip that take them to a series of parks that are near one another, or go on an entire road trip that covers the US and Canada.

It should be noted that if more than one park is going to be seen in a year, a National Park Pass is a good investment to save money on entry into the parks.

Whatever the choice may be, there is no wrong one when choosing a national park tour. And with more time to spare in retirement, those who no longer have to work can see them all.

The definition of a dream vacation varies from person to person, but no matter how you define it, everyone deserves to go on a big, once-in-a-lifetime trip. But where do you even begin planning such an epic getaway? Chances are the vacation you fantasize about in your 20s isn't what your 40-year-old self finds appealing — and with a world full of beautiful cultures, natural wonders, and historical sites, things can quickly become overwhelming. Do you book that ski trip to Japan or save up for an excursion through the Galápagos Islands instead?

To get the ball rolling, we've curated some incredible experiences for every decade of your life. These trips take into account your wallet (here's to you, 20-somethings), mobility, and what sort of destinations tend to call to people in different phases of life . Ready to dive in? Here we go.

In your 20s: Costa Rica

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Costa Rica is far enough from the U.S. to feel like a true escape, yet close enough to make finding cheap flights totally doable. Plus, the relatively affordable cost of living will help ease any financial concerns. You can grab an Imperial (a popular local beer) for about $1-$2, enjoy a sandwich and fries for around $10, and spend plenty of time lounging on the beach for free.

If you're traveling with friends, book a house near the ocean and spend your time near or in the water — surfing, snorkeling, fishing, and kitesurfing. When you're ready for more, a short trip inland will transport you to lush rain forests that house sloths, spider monkeys, colorful birds, and jaguars. For guaranteed animal sightings, head to Centro de Rescate y Santuario Las Pumas in southern Cañas, an animal sanctuary and rescue center. And if you're craving adventure, hike one of the country's many volcanoes or zip line through the clouds.

In your 30s: Japan

There's something for everyone in Japan , with its next-level cityscape, rugged mountains, natural hot springs ( this one in particular), and stunning beaches. All you have to do is narrow things down — which is easier said than done.

In Tokyo , check out the fashion at Harajuku, make your way across Shibuya Crossing, and visit the bars and cafes of Akihabara. For culture and history, head to Kyoto, where you'll find a plethora of Buddhist temples, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines, and perfectly manicured gardens.

Adventure lovers should visit in the winter when skiing takes over the northern island of Hokkaido, and the natural hot springs become a daily must. Alternatively, you can ski the Japanese Alps on the main island of Honshu and make time to visit the hot spring-loving monkeys at Jigokudani Monkey Park . If warm, sandy shores are more your style, head to the Okinawa Islands, where you'll find clear turquoise waters and white-sand beaches.

In your 40s: Machu Picchu, Peru

Chris Marinaccio/Travel + Leisure

The sprawling agricultural terraces, mountain views, and intricate Incan citadels of Machu Picchu have captivated travelers for centuries. But sorting out the logistics takes time, and some of the best experiences involve strapping on a backpack (loaded with the right supplies) and conquering the journey by foot. That's why this trip is perfect for adventurous travelers in their 40s who have the know-how, time, and resources to book the once-in-a-lifetime getaway.

Make time to enjoy Lima and the UNESCO World Heritage city of Cusco, in addition to the trip's main draw: the arrival at Machu Picchu. Remember, many trips are fully customizable, and you can hike, drive, or take the train. For a classic take on the trip, stick to the Inca Trail, but to avoid the crowds (at least the worst of them), you might want to book a trek that takes you around Salkantay Mountain. There are also add-on excursions, including a visit to the Lares region. It's hard to go wrong.

In your 50s: Galápagos Islands

The wonders of the Galápagos are no secret, but until you visit for yourself, it's hard to know just how special the place really is. Thanks to serious protection efforts by the Galápagos National Park and the Galápagos Marine Reserve, the islands and the animals that inhabit them are still relatively untouched. You'll spot blue-footed boobies locked in a mating dance, swim with sea lion pups, and watch marine iguanas sunning themselves next to Galápagos penguins.

To experience the islands, you'll need to book a tour and spend several days living off of a boat, which is why a small-scale luxury yacht with an onboard naturalist is well worth the extra cost. Check out the offerings from INCA (International Nature & Cultural Adventures), a well-respected travel company that keeps its group sizes small and trip quality high — from multi-course meals to luxe extras like onboard Wi-Fi and a rooftop hot tub.

In your 60s: France

If you do it right, a trip to France can include all the bells and whistles of a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Start in Paris, soaking up the wonders of the city — from picnics under the twinkling Eiffel Tower to afternoons spent exploring the Palace of Versailles to dinners at one of the city's Michelin-starred restaurants.

From there, rent a car and head southwest to the coastal city of La Rochelle, where you'll nosh on freshly caught fish and explore the medieval and Renaissance architecture of the old town. A drive further down the coast puts you in Bordeaux , home to great food and even better wine. You'll want to make a pit stop in the charming surf town of Biarritz before cutting east toward the French Riviera . As you travel along the stunning Mediterranean coast, swing by cities like Marseille and Nice, glitzy communities like St. Tropez and Cannes, and under-the-radar towns like Cassis and Antibes. Before returning to Paris , make time to stroll the lavender fields of Provence and drive among the jaw-dropping French Alps.

It's a trip that not only exposes you to the finer things in life — architecture, art, and French food and wine — but will open your mind to the distinctly French way of living, a mindset that is perfect for your 60s.

In your 70s and beyond: South Africa

There's more to Africa than safaris — and this trip with smarTours proves it. In addition to visiting Kruger National Park, one of Africa's largest game reserves with a high density of animals (including the Big Five — lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalos), you'll get to explore the South African cities of Cape Town , Durban, and Johannesburg, learn about the legacy of Nelson Mandela, and check out the countries of Eswatini and Zimbabwe (if you book the extension).

The trip is ideally suited to travelers ready to get out and explore but don't want the stress of booking every detail or committing to a ton of physical activity. With a bit of thoughtful planning (and the help of smarTours), galavanting all over South Africa and seeing incredible animals is not only doable, it's easy.

Transat hosts 20 Canadian travel advisors on fam to Peru

Post date: Aug 30 2024

Date: Aug 30 2024

By: Travelweek

TORONTO — A group of 20 handpicked Canadian travel advisors experienced the magic and history of Peru while on an epic fam trip with Transat.

In partnership with Jumbo Tours and using Air Transat’s direct flights from Toronto, the recent fam was inspired by Transat’s Magical Peru guided tour and included a wide array of authentic experiences. In Lima, advisors were able to visit the San Isidro market and take part in a culinary workshop at Guarguero restaurant where they learned how to prepare ceviche and pisco sours. This was followed by a walking tour of the Presidential Palace, Lima Cathedral and the Rafael Larco Museum, after which advisors took a flight to Cusco for a visit to an alpaca farm. From there, they explored the Sacred Valley’s most iconic sites such as the Maras salt flats, the ruins of Pisac and the agricultural terraces of Moray, as well as Ollantaytambo, one of the best preserved Inca cities. The trip culminated in a visit to the famed ancient site of Machu Picchu, and concluded with a guided tour of Cusco.

“This trip was the perfect opportunity to highlight the exceptional quality of our Peru tour and reinforce our travel advisors’ confidence in our product,” said Lindsay Merrill, Transat’s sales manager. “Experiences like this help us equip our partner agencies with the tools they need to inspire their clients to step out of their comfort zones.”

Participating advisors said they were excited to share what they learned and experienced with their clients. Said Josée Morin, Owner and Travel Manager at TravelOnly Sudbury: “While the sites of Peru such as Machu Picchu were what we were all looking forward to, it was the sincere passion and knowledge of the Jumbo Tours guides that really impressed me. I’m confident that our clients will be in excellent hands and treated like family.”

And Autumn Harvey-Smith of Transat Travel Oshawa added: “Transat’s Magical Peru Tour is an incredible experience, from the Inca heritage to the Peruvian cuisine and surrounding architecture. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and personable about every aspect of the trip.”
