Trysil Resort Guide

Insider tips from our team, why trysil, ten things we love about trysil.

1. Voted Norway’s best family resort. For multiple years, Trysil has been voted as Norway’s best ski resort for families. The child-friendly facilities are hard to beat, with superb children’s ski areas that feature magic carpets and forest trails.

2. Snow guarantee. Hugely confident in their snow conditions, Trysil offers a very generous snow guarantee: if the snow cover isn't extensive enough, you'll receive a refund on your lift pass, accommodation, ski rental and tuition.

3. Norway’s largest ski area. There’s plenty to keep you busy here, with more than 40 miles of ski slopes. The well-planned piste network means that all levels can ski together.

4. Uncrowded slopes. Even during peak weeks, Trysil’s slopes are blissfully quiet in comparison to the Alps. The wide, open pistes give you plenty of space for building confidence and enjoying the immaculately groomed terrain.

5. Friendly, English-speaking locals. Genuinely friendly and exceptionally helpful, Norwegians speak English as their second language. From the lift operators to the locals, we always find that everyone in Trysil is hugely welcoming.

6. Super-convenient resort hubs. Everything you need (from bars, restaurants and grocery shopping to ski rental and ski school is located at the two main base areas at Trysil Turistsenter and Trysil Høyfjellssenter.

7. Slope-side accommodation. More than 80% of the accommodation in Trysil is ski-in ski-out. The properties have been perfectly laid out so that you can easily ski back for lunch without having to use a shuttle.

8. Low-altitude amenities. Sheltered from the elements by the surrounding trees, the resort amenities sit at relatively low altitudes. This also makes the drive here easier and faster, with no hairpin bends to contend with.

9. Long season. Trysil’s long ski season typically runs from mid-December to the end of April, making it a great place for an Easter or late-season ski trip. Particularly with that fantastic snow cover guarantee (see reason no. 2).

10. Easy to reach. An easy two and a half hour transfer from Oslo airport, there are lots of options for getting here, with direct two-hour flights leaving from Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

Norway's largest ski area sits mostly below the tree line, so you can look forward to scenic trails and great visibility when it snows. Intermediates have plenty of piste miles to explore, and the mountain is almost conical in shape so you can ski most of the way around it, with great views from the exposed summit.

Trysil’s forte, however, is in its gentle, cruising runs and wide-open spaces that make those first turns feel safer and stress-free. Perfect for families and mixed-ability groups, the well-planned piste network means that you can all jump on the same lift, choose your favourite run down and meet again at the bottom. Beginners can also get a feel for the whole ski area with easier runs at all altitudes.

That doesn't mean that experts have been forgotten, however: for challenging runs, the Høgegga area has some seriously steep blacks including the 45° Run 75.

Off-piste in Trysil

The long season means that off-piste conditions can still be good as late as March and April. We often find that the Trysilfjellet area is particularly good fun. To arrange a guide for help finding the best powder stashes, just ask a member of our team for details.

Home to Norway’s largest ski school, Trysil has some of the best ski instructors in Scandinavia. They offer tuition for all ages and levels, from toddlers and first-timers to expert skiers. As well as private lessons and week-long courses, you can try taster sessions in snowboarding, cross-country and telemark skiing. Just ask our team about the best options for your level and budget.

Adults  - Graded from green through to black, all adult sessions aim to build on your existing skills and either teach you the basics or fine-tune your technique. You can choose between group lessons or one-to-one tuition.

Children and teens  - One of the best places in the world for children to learn, Trysil ski lessons use fun and play as a foundation for helping children build confidence and develop new skills. Group lessons are divided into four age categories: 3years; 4-6 years; 7-9 years; and 10-15 years.

Kids in Trysil

The convenience of having all the facilities you need (bars, restaurants, grocery shopping, ski rentals and ski school) in one place is something our family guests hugely appreciate in Trysil. The Trysil Turistsenter and Trysil Høyfjellsenter areas are particularly good in this respect.

Skiing at Trysil Turistsenter - The large beginner area by the Radisson Blu has three child-friendly lifts, a slalom course and a self-timed piste, as well as a green jump and rails, a sledging slope, cafe, and barbecue huts. When your family is ready to try more challenging slopes, the whole Trysil ski system is easily accessible from here.

Skiing at Høyfjellsenter - With gentle and unintimidating slopes, the sheltered skiing away from the main base area is ideal for little ones, first-timers and nervous skiers. The slopes are often deserted and the self-contained ski area allows everyone to build confidence in a safe environment.

Food and Drink

We’ve tested and tasted our way around a huge variety of Trysil’s restaurants and bars. Here are some of our top recommendations.

On the mountain

Skihytta - Serves hearty dishes at the base of slopes 3 and 4. Try the lunchtime soup special - it’s served inside a holed-out loaf of bread!

Knettsetra  - A traditional log cabin in the trees, near the snowboard park. Order a gourmet burger at lunch or ski here on floodlit slopes in the evening for a moose fondue. Get a lift back to your hotel on a snowmobile.

Laaven  - Serves rustic meals at the base of the main chairlift in Trysil Turistsenter. Fuel up at their lunch buffet or try the speciality grill buffet on Friday and Saturday evenings.

La Pasteria - Slopeside fresh pasta, open for breakfast lunch and dinner.

Fjellroa - Formerly the Skipaviljongen, the newly built Fjellroa is in the middle of run #53 in the Fageråsen area (Trysil Høyfjellssenter) serves burgers, Asian bowls, draught beers, wines, coffees, cold drinks, pastries and a magnificent view of the slopes.

In the Village

Family favourites.

Chill Bowl & Dine  - American-style diner beside the Radisson Blu’s basement-level bowling alley in Turistsenter.

Peppes Pizza  - Excellent eat-in, take-out and delivery pizzas in Trysil Turistsenter.

Puben Sankt Olav - Serves a lunch buffet, pizza and pub-style menu. Also does a pizza delivery service. In Høyfjellssenter.

Barbacoa - Right by the Fjellekspressen chair lift, serving American and Mexican-style BBQ and tacos. Also offers takeaway and delivery.

Barken Restaurant  - Scandinavian and international restaurant at the Park Inn, Fageråsen area (Trysil Høyfjellssenter).

Happy Faces - Eat-in or take-away burgers, bowls and sushi at Trysil Turistsenter.

Pilegrimen - Decent steakhouse in Trysil Høyfjellsenter for lunch or three-course dinners. Has a children’s menu and play area with games and films.

Après Ski (or, as the Norwegians call it, Afterski!)

Stabben Afterski - Relaxed bar at the Park Inn, with live music on Fridays and Saturdays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, and 11pm till 2am.

Ski Pub’n  - A rustic, cosy pub with family-friendly après ski, music and food. In Trysil Tursistsenter.

Laaven  - The après programme runs from 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Saturday, with a nightclub on Saturdays. Trysil Tursistsenter.

Trysil has a particularly good selection of non-ski activities for all ages, whether you want to have fun as a family or relax with adults only.

Non-ski activities: our top 5

1. Dog Sledding  - Great fun for the whole family, choose anything from a 20-minute sled ride to an overnight trip with Siberian and Alaskan huskies. A fantastic way to see more of Trysil’s beautiful natural landscapes.  Mountain Kings Sledehundkennel  |  Fjell-Huskies

2. Horse Sleigh Ride  - Take a sleigh ride into the forest and arrive in style to an evening meal served in a lavvu tent (teepee). Go after dark and under torchlight for the best experience.

3. Bowling  -  The Radisson Blu  has an eight-lane tenpin bowling alley and American style diner. A perfect combination for a fun family evening.

4. Spa - The SkiStar Lodge Kulpen Spa  has an indoor-outdoor pool, outdoor hot tubs and several saunas.  Alpine Spa & Relax  at the Radisson Blu Resort has nine treatment rooms, plus a Jacuzzi, Finnish sauna, Turkish steam room and an aromatic laconicum.

5. Surfing & swimming - The FlowRider indoor surfing wave at the Radisson Blu is seriously good fun. Anyone can have a go, from children and complete beginners to pro-level surfers. Join a taster session or book some tuition. The pool complex also has a glass climbing wall and an indoor pool with currents.

Eating out in Trysil

Norway isn’t the cheapest option for eating out but there are plenty of places to do so.

With over 30 restaurants through the mountains it’s a great place to ski and stop for lunch. In the main town and Turistsenter there are more places to eat.

Some of our favourites are –

Knettsetera Trysil

Set up in the mountains you can only get here by skiing but it’s an easy ski. There’s no booking here, just arrive and find yourself a table.

There are great burgers (including a number of vegan options) and it’s the perfect place to stop a while.

The Radisson Blu Trysil, Norway

The Radisson Blu’s own Italian restaurant is a wonderful place for a family meal and well priced too.

They have their own wood fired oven and you can see them making the pizzas and hand pulling the dough. There are some pasta and fish dishes on offer too.

The food is of really high quality and very tasty.

Skihytta, Trysil Ski Resort

TRYSIL AT A GLANCE

Trysil is Norway’s largest ski area with 29 lifts (plus more in planning) and 110km of piste. It has one of the longest ski seasons in Europe, opening early November with skiing until May, and boasts great snow conditions all season long. Another great selling point of Trysil is the quiet slopes and lack of lift queues.

The resort is situated across the Trysilfjellet mountain which provides varied terrain and a variety of slopes around the entire mountain. There are two main villages in the resort. Trysil Tourist Centre (Turistsenteret) provides a great starting point with fantastic beginner zones and an abundance of shops, restaurants and places to stay. The more remote Trysil Mountain Resort (Høyfjellssenteret) has some fantastic green runs, we particularly love the sweeping runs through the trees.

TRYSIL SKI HOLIDAYS

trysil tourist center

Slide title

trysil tourist center

Our ideal day in Trysil Wake up early to get first lifts and take advantage of the empty pistes. Take F2 up and enjoy the reds or greens back down to the Mountain Resort. When you’re done playing here, take the greens down through the trees to Hogegga. This is one of our favourite areas to ski EVER! Cruise through the trees that are dusted with glistening snow all the way to the chairlift, get H1 up and then take the blues down to Knettsetra for a hot chocolate in a beautifully cosy log cabin. Here you’ll see exactly why Norway is the home of hygge!

Take T9 drag up and then play on the reds down to the Tourist Centre. Take T1 then S1 right to the very top and choose between red or black runs back down to Skyhytta – the perfect place for a lunch stop. After lunch enjoy the chilled green runs through the trees on the farthest side of the mountain before slowly making your way back.

On certain days of the week in Trysil you can go night skiing. A few lifts stay open and flood lights light the piste so you can get as much skiing in as possible! We love finishing a day off by getting in the last runs at twilight and then hitting the spa in the Trysil Mountain Resort.

WHY WE LOVE TRYSIL

  • Superb snow conditions all season
  • Lift queues are practically non-existent and the pistes are always quiet
  • Easy resort to navigate and the locals are really friendly if you need directions

skiing in trysil

Trysil is a beginners paradise. The beginner zones at Turistsenteret are a great place to get going on the snow where you’ll quickly progress to skiing on greens and blues. Trysil has an incredibly friendly atmosphere which makes beginners feel at ease, if you’re unsure where to go next, just ask! All the locals are more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Intermediates

Intermediates will love Trysil. There are plenty of superb reds and a handful of black runs that are suitable for intermediate skiers too. The slopes are quiet so it’s a great opportunity to practice your skills and technique without interruption.

If you’re an advanced skier, you’ll definitely be a fan of Trysil. The runs down to the Hogegga chairlift are almost exclusively black – the area is a gnarly playground for expert skiers! If you’re hardcore, you need to try run no. 75, it’s famous (or infamous!) for its 45 degree slope which descends 600m over 2.5km.

Other activities

There’s so much more to Trysil than skiing!

  • Horse sleigh ride – jump aboard a horse pulled sled for a ride through the forest to a cosy tepee where you’ll enjoy an evening meal
  • Dog sledding – the best way to see Trysil’s natural beauty, on a sled led by Siberian and Alaskan huskies!
  • Bowling – great evening entertainment after a day on the slopes, enjoy a meal at the American diner too
  • Spa day – relax and rejuvenate in the Mountain Resort’s Kulpen Spa with indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms

Family Skiing

All our Trysil accommodation is ski-in, ski-out which makes life much easier with little ones. There are plenty of places to stop for refreshments and tonnes of extra activities to do as well as skiing. Green runs are everywhere and there are lots of blue runs too. Even the reds and black runs are very wide and well-groomed so confident little ones might even brave a black run by the end of the week!

Ski Schools

SkiStar run ski lessons in Trysil. They operate a fantastic ski school for anyone from 3 upwards. Their instructors all speak excellent English. You can have group or private lessons or hire a guide if you just want to discover the area with someone who knows all the best spots. Trysil is a great destination for cross-country skiing. If you’re new to the sport, you can try it with one of SkiStar’s guides.

We recommend SchSki for all our guests' ski hire. They have sho ps in both La Massana and Arinsaland offer a high level of service with the latest skis, boards and safety equipment available for rent.

Resort Guides

Ski resorts guide – trysil, norway, norwegian good.

Trysil is Norway’s largest resort and is owned by the same company that operates Hemsedal and Åre. It comes with quite a history in the development of ski racing, having hosted one of the first ever organised events. The Trysilgutten ski club goes all the way back to 1861!

  • Highest Point: 1,100m
  • Descent: 685m
  • No. lifts: 30

It is located a short distance from the Swedish border, and about two and a half hours North East of Oslo airport. Everything centres around the Trysilfjellet Mountain and the four base areas – Turistsenter, Høyfjellssenter, Høgegga and Skihytta – that surround it. But it is the Turistsenter area that has the most life.

The lower two-thirds of the mountain is a picturesque tree-lined winter wonderland. The top third, by contrast, is bare and pretty featureless, but offers fantastic 360 degree views of the area. The off-piste isn’t the most fantastic, but you can snowboard around all sides of the mountain, and with a decent number of pistes, excellent terrain parks, and good nightlife, there is enough to keep you happy for a good while. And if you get bored you could always head over the border and checkout Sälen, Scandinavia’s largest area.

The Parks – 4/5

Trysil and Hemsedal have a long running battle as to which resort has Norway’s best terrain park, and it’s occasionally a very close call. Currently, we reckon that Trysil has the upper hand.

“There’s so much variety here “

The main parks always lay the features out along almost the entire length of a piste, giving you plenty of time to set yourself up for the next hit. For the past few seasons they’ve stopped building a halfpipe, but last season’s bowl-esque feature went down a storm. There’s so much variety here, you can guarantee you will never be disappointed with what is on offer.

The Powder – 2/5

The top section of the mountain is devoid of trees and pretty much any other features, and the gentle pitch makes it a tame ride. The lower half is covered in pretty tight trees so you need to keep your wits about you, but this is Trysil’s main draw for freeriders.

The best areas can be found where the open terrain meets the trees. The area off the Kanken lift and the general area around Fjellroa restaurant start off open, and the trees become increasingly tight-knit, so you’re going to need to know what you’re doing to avoid a face full of bark.

All of the steep runs start at the Høgegga base, and there are plenty of lumps to hit on the sides of the pistes, and lots of bumps which no-one but snowboarders seem to use.

trysil tourist center

The Pistes – 3/5

The 71km of pistes here make it Norway’s largest area and they do a fine maintenance job to ensure that every lump has been flattened out every night. The pistes are generally really wide; especially the upper slopes, making it a good place to lay some beautiful arcs in the snow – but don’t expect endless long fast runs. On the lower two thirds of the mountain, all the trails are tree-lined, so they’re easy to navigate.

  • Opens: November 2017
  • Closes: April   2018
  • 1 Day:  €47
  • 6 Days: €227

Beginners may struggle with the large number of T-bars, and could find themselves restricted to a few areas until they’ve mastered them. The Fjellekspressen and Liekspressen chairlifts that run from the main base near the tourist centre take you up to some nice meandering beginner runs, but once you’re bored with these you really have little choice but to give the tow lifts a try.

Three days a week they open the pistes for night skiing at both the main tourist centre face and the opposite Høyfjellssenter area. Up to six pistes are floodlit until 8pm, including both the terrain parks.

trysil tourist center

The Parties – 3/5

The village in Trysil is 2km away from the slopes and it’s best to use that purely to restock, as all the action is based near the lifts.

“Laaven gets ridiculously busy, but is THE  après place in Trysil”

Après ski starts off in the Knettsetra , which is located mid-station between Høgegga and the tourist centre bases. When you’re back at the tourist centre base, head to Laaven , which gets ridiculously busy but is the après place in Trysil.

Sindrestua is right next to the Fjellekspressen lift and is good for a more chilled beer at the end of the day. Ski Puben is more of a grown-up, English style pub that has live bands at the weekend. It’s a short stumble from Sindrestua. Later the bar in the Radisson Hotel and the T2 nightclub , both of which are around the Turistsenter base, are good places to check out if you want to burn the midnight oil.
