Dream Theater announce Top Of The World US tour dates for 2022

Following the recent success of their 15th studio album A View From The Top Of The World, two-time GRAMMY-nominated and millions-selling progressive music titans Dream Theater are announcing the rescheduled dates for the recently-postponed Top Of The World Tour.

The dates will now kick off in Mesa, AZ on February 2nd and run 7 weeks before ending in Austin, TX on March 21st. The tour will also make stops in Los Angeles, CA; Quebec, QC; New York, NY and Dallas, TX among others and will mark the first live performances of music from the band’s latest release A View From The Top Of The World. Arch Echo will be the opener on all dates in the United States and Falset will be the opener on all of the dates in Canada. Dream Theater Announce 2022 Top of the World Tour Dates

Hot on the heels of their 15th studio album, October's A View From the Top of the World , prog-metal juggernaut Dream Theater have announced the rescheduled dates for their recently postponed Top of the World Tour. The dates — which will be opened, on U.S. stops, by Arch Echo and, on Canada stops, by Falset — will now kick off in Mesa, Arizona, on February 2nd and wrap in Austin, Texas, seven weeks later, on March 21st, after making major stops in L.A. and NYC, among other cities. The trek will mark the first live performances of music off A View From the Top of the World . Wednesday 20 th April 2022 saw the Dream Theater’s Tour of the Top of the World Tour 2022 EU/UK leg kick off in the metropolis of Belfast, their first time back on this Island since the 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence Tour many Glass Moons ago.

The setlist remained unchanged from the recently completed North American Leg of the tour due to the modern-day complexities of production; the visuals behind the band accompanying each song perfectly in sync.

Support for Belfast, Newcastle and London is provided by Milton Keynes’ Tesseract. Low level lighting effects working well for audience members in the higher up seats, but partially obscuring the band members from view for those at floor level.

The band delivered their Djenty, electronically tinged Progressive Metal perfectly and the exposure to an older average aged audience than their usual audience profile will no doubt have made an Impression and garnered interest from some DT diehards present.

After a 30-minute change over, as 8:40pm approached it was time to awaken the masters. Lights dimmed and intro rolled and the band took to the stage launching in to “The Alien”.

The virtuosity of the musicians transcending time, they were on the button as usual: mind-bogglingly, precisely executed. James Labrie joining his bandmates two minutes into the song he sounds better than ever and delivered a great performance even with what appeared to be a few niggles with his mic stand.

Melody then walked through the door as “6:00” as Mary Jane was again told about the honour of God. At this point James name checked his Irish heritage, the McCarthy and Fitzgerald’s (or was it Fitzpatrick he said) surely proud of their Canadian clan member.

“Awaken The Master” next. John Petrucci must have more than 4 fingers and a thumb on his left hand; amazing work up and down his guitar neck making jaws hit the floor and many guitarists in the audience wonder why they bother!

“Endless Sacrifice”, “Bridges in the Sky”, “Invincible Monster” and “About to Crash” are executed perfectly before the arms in the air 14 or so minutes of “The Ministry of Lost Souls” and 20 minutes of “A View from the Top of the World” brought the set to an end.

The stamina needed to close out a 2 hour show with these epics plus the 20 minute “The Count of Tuscany” has to be acknowledged. Are these guys human?

All in, a fantastic night of spell binding musicianship, shredding, melody. As James said, music unites. Tonight, Dream Theater provided the escapism much needed after two years of uncertainty for both the industry and the fans.

The “rhythm” section of Mike Mangini and John Myung provide much more than mere rhythm. We ain’t talking 4/4 all night here matey! Lead Bass anyone? Also, Jordan Rudess and his heroics on the keys and tablet, supplemented by his now traditional walkabout shredding style.

It was now time for the Dream Theater crew to pack up and everyone head for the 3:30 ferry to Cairnryan for the Thursday 21 st date in Newcastle. The three Beat The Street tour buses and three Fly By Night trucks (and the Stena Superfast VII) transporting five Counts of Tusca…..er, Progressive Metal onwards.

The Top of The World Tour was a concert tour by Dream Theater in support of their 15th studio album, A View From The Top Of The World . They were joined by Arch Echo and Falset on the North American leg, by Tesseract and Devin Townsend during the 1st European leg, and Arion on the 2nd European Leg. This marked their first tour since the Distance Over Time Tour was cancelled in the middle of its European leg due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This past cold Saturday night after another snow storm in Denver, I made my way to the Paramount Theater for and evening of music with Dream Theater . 

As I past the venue about 5 minutes before door time, there was a line that went down the block and around the corner from the theater. As I mentioned, it was a cold night. I made my way in and as I walked down the isle of the 90+ year old venue, one can’t help notice the “Zig Zag Art Deco” design popularized in the Jazz Age. I met with security to discuss where we would be aloud to cover the show since there was no photo pit and from there I set up my camera for the nights show. 

8:00  o’clock and the members of Arch Echo , tonight’s opening band, made their way onto the stage. Arch Echo describes their music as an “Instrumental, Progressive Fusion for the music nerd in some of us”! This would be a set of instrumental music with no vocals. They started their evening with, ‘ To the Moon’ from their 2020 album, STORYI . From the start, each member played with a passion like it would be the last time they would preform. Their body language and inter action with each other was fun to watch. Through each song the smiles on their faces never left. The crowd was very enthusiastic listening to their music as they moved through their set, and showed it at the end of each song. Though their set was short, it left an impression on me and I’m sure to many who were hearing their music for the first.

After the break, the lights came down and the crowd cheered as the members of Dream Theater took their places. They started their set with the song, ‘ The Alien ‘ from their 2021 album, A View from the Top of the World. Along with the music, there was a large video screen that projected images throughout the night that added to the atmosphere in the venue. An evening of sight and sound was beginning. Moving into their second song, 6:00 from their 1994 album Awake, John Petrucci stepped up and let his fingers work their magic as only he can. Throughout the night James LaBrie would pour out his powerful vocals but at times, he would  song with a more melodic and softer sound yet crisp and clear. Moving through their set, Dream Theater’s songs are not short and James would step back away from the stage letting the others take over which happened with regularity. Moving back and forth through time with their music, the video screen would show images of skeletons circling around the screen. Their music seemed to be in sync with the videos as dragons flew through majestic mountains.

Continuing with the song,  ‘ About to Crash ‘ from their 2002 album Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, the crowd which had already been on it’s feet most of the evening was moving even more. At times John Petrucci and keyboardist Jordan Rudess would solo together to the delight of everyone there. Jordan’s keyboards were set on what looked like platform that would rotate in circles and at times the keyboards would move into a vertical position while he played. With some of their songs lasting 10 minutes, 12 minutes or longer, the energy level from everyone was something to see and hear. Finishing their evening with ‘The Count of Tuscany, ‘ from their 2009 album Black Clouds & Silver Linings,  their fans showed their appreciation for a great night of music. The fact that they played only 10 songs, will give you an idea of how long some of their songs are. This was a evening I thoroughly enjoyed and loved the mix of music and videos. This is a show for fans and those who have not seen Dream Theater , take the journey, you will not be disappointed.

I have been dabbling in photography since I was a kid. Box cameras, instamatics, then 35mm film cameras. In the late 70’s I went to a concert and took pictures, no one cared at first. That came to end in 1980. When the first digital cameras came out, I got more interested and serious about photography. For years I did nothing but landscape and even started selling my work with some success. In May of 2014, I walked into a small concert venue and asked about photographing a band that was going to play there. Little did I know then how my life was about to change. My 2 passions, music and photography turned into a wonderful journey. 7+ years later, I have meet artists from all over the world, photographed bands from over 20 different countries. I am living the dream of being a concert photographer. To this day, when I step in front of the stage to cover a show, I still get as excited as a 5 year old on Christmas morning!
