Post-tribune | infinity, journey recaptured, bostyxx share the same bill for the first time in griffith.

Infinity, who encourage audience interaction and requests, grew to cover hits by bands including Boston, Bon Jovi, Led Zeppelin, Queen and REO Speedwagon. Infinity’s members also perform in Boston and Styx tribute Bostyxx and dress up to take the stage as the tribute Journey Recaptured.

“This is the first time we’ve done it with all three,” said lead vocalist Biagi about the Feb. 5 concert featuring Infinity, Journey Recaptured and Bostyxx on the same bill at Avenue 912 in Griffith.

Biagi performs with fellow Chicagoan Dean Maltese (drums, vocals) and Illinoisians Matt Rek (guitar, vocals) of Lockport; Mike Szot (bass, vocals) of Willow Springs; and Lance Tuula (guitar, vocals) and Ben Tuula (keyboards, vocals), both of Rockton.

“They’re great musicians. They’re great guys. We’re friends. When we get onstage we probably have just as much fun as everybody else in the crowd,” Biagi said.

“We don’t know what we’re going to play that night. All of us sing. If someone asks for a favorite song, we’ll give it a try.”

Infinity’s extensive possible set list includes multiple songs by AC/DC, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Guns N’ Roses, Journey, Kansas, Motley Crue, Night Ranger, Poison, Rush, Styx, Triumph, Van Halen and Whitesnake.

Single tunes by Bryan Adams, Asia, the Beatles, the Black Crowes, Big & Rich, Cheap Trick, Damn Yankees, Neil Diamond, Eagles, Andy Grammer, Grand Funk, Billy Idol, Jimmy Eat World, Kiss, Lit, Loverboy, Lynryd Skynyrd, Bruno Mars, Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne are also in Infinity’s repertoire.

Tracks by the Outfield, Pink Floyd, Elvis Presley, Smash Mouth, Rick Springfield, Three Dog Night, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Van Morrison, Walk the Moon, the Who, Wild Cherry and ZZ Top are also among the possibilities when Infinity take the stage.

“We evolve. If we stayed the same we wouldn’t have been around this long,” said Biagi, who has been singing since he was 17 years old.

“We just try to change it up and that’s what keeps it rolling. Infinity turned into the perfect name. It just keeps going and going.”

Biagi said both Journey Recaptured and Bostyxx were launched a few years ago to expand what Infinity members could play and the venues where they could perform.

Journey Recaptured draw heavily from Journey’s 1981 “Captured” live album.

“I just have fun with all of it. With Infinity and Bostyxx, we don’t dress up. We just wear the clothes we’re wearing. We never have a set list. We never have a clue until we start. We just play off the crowd. If we did the same thing over and over again, we wouldn’t survive,” he said.

“With Journey Recaptured we try to look like what Journey look like. Lance puts on his perm wig. I put on Converse and tails. My favorite song is ‘Mother Father.’ When people see Journey Recaptured they’re big Journey fans. They will know all the songs that weren’t on the radio. That’s what draws big.

“With Bostyxx I like going back and doing Styx’s ‘Crystal Ball’ or ‘Light Up’ and I’m just glad I can sing a Boston song. We really love covering it all.”

Infinity, who bill themselves as “a musical collection of the greatest legendary rock anthems of all time” and “an authentic arena rock concert recreation,” perform primarily in the Chicago area and the Midwest but have booked more Indiana gigs recently.

Journey Recaptured playing at Griffith’s Rock ‘N’ Rail Music and Street Festival in September led to connecting with Avenue 912 and a December booking there for Trans-Infinity Orchestra, who feature Infinity’s members collaborating with others in a tribute to rock band Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

“It was just a great room. We’ve played all over. To just find nice owners that are great guys, that’s another rarity right now,” Biagi said.

“We’re really doing a lot in Indiana this year. This year we’ve got shows in Hammond and Griffith. There’s always four or five festivals booked in Indiana. We played the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana in Gary with Trans-Infinity Orchestra and sold out the auditorium.”

“At Avenue 912 we’re bringing in moving lights. We’re bringing in lasers. When you go to see us at Avenue 912, it’s not going to look like the same room.”

Album Review: “Captured” by Journey

Live albums can be tricky. If done right, it could capture the magic and energy of the live performances but if done poorly, it could easily be one of the more forgettable LPs that even the most ardent fans wouldn’t bother to listen to a second time. And Journey’s “Captured” falls somewhere in between. Even Steve Perry himself isn’t too fond of the LP.

It would still be a few months away before they will release “Escape” which spawned the classic hits “Open Arms,” “Don’t Stop Believin'”, and “Who’s Cryin’ Now.” “Separate Ways” and “Faithfully” were not yet conceived. Even so, at this point, Journey already had a string of hits. And that’s what they used for “Captured” – a live double-disc which was recorded during their 1980 “Departure” Tour. It’s the last LP that featured keyboard player and founder Gregg Rolie.

It peaked at #9 on the US Billboard 200 and was eventually certified 2x platinum by the RIAA. But both fans and critics can agree – it wasn’t their finest musical moment.

“Captured” is interesting and entertaining enough – it perfectly showed where Journey was at that point in their career. Their biggest hits would come later and as far as live albums go, this isn’t all that bad. But it’s far from being unforgettable either. The delivery and execution of the songs were good, as to be expected with a tight group like Journey. Steve Perry also shined with his vocals.

But there’s something lacking that’s hard to pinpoint. The energy is there but it’s too perfect – almost like you’re listening to a studio recording instead of a live performance. And perhaps it’s that perfectionism that takes away the magic that should be present here. Again, their solid playing is impressive but not exactly something that left us in awe.

Overall, “Captured” is dispensable.
