Before you read this chapter I have a few questions so first off the guard will be at the tree for 2-3 chapters. Would you guys want me to continue this book with more chapters and talk about the guard journey back to the pride lands, let me know in the comments or vote for more thank you and enjoy this chapter.

Rani, the night pride, and the lion guard are in the cave walking to find the exit to get to the tree of life.

"Is Kion the only one that needs the tree of life?" Rani asked as they walked,

"No, our friend Ono here was exposed to vog while saving Bunga" Kion answered.

"Yeah, and my vision has been foggy because of it," Ono said.

"Well don't worry the tree is the perfect thing to help both of you," Rani said.

Anga flys beside Rani and looks at her,

"So after they are healed we can just go right," Anga asked.

"Well, it's recommended to stay for one night after using the tree to make sure it worked and there are no complications" Rani answered.

"So after Ono and Kion are healed they will be weak and need to rest," Rani said.

"Ok, thanks for the help Rani," Fuli said thankfully.

"Don't worry about it, it's our job to get animals to the tree of life and give them the right treatment they need" Rani said.

As they all continue to walk they can see light at the end of the cave,

"Come on just up ahead," Rani said leading everyone out of the cave.

As Rani leads everyone out the lion guard eyes widen as they look ahead from the cliff.

"Welcome to the tree of life," Rani said, as the lion guard see the tree up ahead

"We made it," Beshte said smiling,

"Well what are we waiting for," Bunga said

Everyone went down the hill and walked to the tree, and there was another Lioness outside waiting.

"Rani and night pride welcome back," the Lioness said.

Rani turns to face the lion guard,

"Everyone meet the elder/healer of the tree of life," Rani said introducing the lioness behind her.

"Hello, we're the....." Bunga was about to say.

"Lion guard," the elder said smiling.

"Woah you really do know us," Bunga said surprised.

"Yes, I know all of you Bunga, Anga, Beshte, Ono, Makini, Fuli, and Kion," the elder said looking at them.

"You all traveled a long way to heal your friends so come on inside," the elder said turning around heading inside.

As everyone follows the elder and Rani, the lion guard are shocked how big it is inside, they can see a bunch of animals eating, running, playing, some even sleeping.

"The tree of life is home to animals who don't have a home or have nowhere to go" Rani explained as they walked.

"Rani want to give the lion guard a tour while I prepare inside," the elder asked looking at Rani,

"Of course," Rani said quickly.

The lion elder turned and went inside another area, and the lion guard followed Rani,

"This is the watering hole, it's big enough for everyone to drink," Rani said as they walked by.

"Over here are a variety of fruits, vegetables, insects, and some food" Rani pointed out.

Rani hears some of the Guard's voices and, not recognizing them, asks her uncle Surak for advice. He confirms them as strangers, remarking they must be powerful to have caused a rock slide. Fearing they might be dangerous, Rani turns to Nirmala, who suggests a calm approach, thinking the strangers might be peaceful. Still, Baliyo, Rani's younger brother, becomes suspicious and starts climbing the slide, wanting to take a look. He reaches the other side and, seeing the Guard below, listens to Kion say how, as soon as they clear the rocks, nothing will stop them from getting to the Tree of Life.

Misreading the situation, Baliyo reports the strangers as mean before setting off to stop them, ignoring Rani's warnings. Frustrated, Rani leads the others to help him, chanting "With strength and respect, Night Pride protect". Baliyo takes the Guard by surprise, ambushing Kion while Anga informs Fuli of other lions coming. Taking charge, Fuli has Beshte and Anga helps her fight while Makini and Ono try to free Bunga. At one point, Fuli tries to reason with Rani, though the lioness refuses to listen, blaming them for the rockslide and for Kion attacking Baliyo, even though it was her brother's fault.

Fuli and Beshte oppose this, wanting to be welcomed at the Tree of Life instead of forcing their way in.  Beshte, in particular, has no ill will towards the Night Pride, believing they were just defending their home, something the Lion Guard would have done in the same place.

When Makini wonders if this they are not going to the Tree of Life, Fuli assures her they just need to come up with another plan. When Fuli turns to Kion for help, the Guard finds him walking away despondently. Knowing Kion needs some time alone, the Guard goes back to helping Bunga. On the other side of the pass, the Night Pride is seen approaching the Tree of Life, where they come across Baliyo, a little rattled but otherwise okay. The Tree of Life is the sixty-sixth episode of The Lion Guard and the eleventh episode of Season 3.

Synopsis [ ]

The Lion Guard is thrilled to be at the end of its journey to the Tree of Life . The celebration is cut short when the Night Pride mistakes the Guard for a threat and attacks.

While the Lion Guard travels through the snowy forest at night, they comes across a big frozen lake. Anga spots the last moja kwa moja stone on the other side, causing Ono to note that they are almost at the Tree of Life, much to Kion's relief. Kion asks Anga how long it will take to get around the lake, who reports it might take them all night since it's big. Feeling pain in his scar, Kion irritably insists that they get going. At that point, Bunga calls Kion to show him how the lake is hard, causing Ono to explain how the lake has frozen over due to the extreme cold, turning the water into ice. Seeing the water is hard enough to walk on it, Bunga suggests crossing the lake. While some are unsure about the ice, Kion agrees with Bunga.

Believing the lake is the fastest way to go. The Guard begins crossing the lake, with some stumbling on the slippery surface. Unfortunately, the combined weight of the Lion Guard begins cracking the ice, sending them all running as the lake begins to fragment. While the Lion Guard makes it land, Makini gets stuck on a small piece of ice. With Anga unwilling to risk toppling Makini's island with wind from her wings, Kion and Fuli attempt to rescue Makini. While trying to reach another slab of ice, Makini accidentally falls into the icy water. Kion and Fuli soon reach her and pull her out, taking her away from the ice. Back on land, Kion asks Makini for Tuliza for his scar. Unfortunately, Makini realizes she lost her staff and their stash of Tuliza at the lake, with Anga confirming it has sunk. Kion reassures Makini, pointing they are at least close to the last moja kwa moja stone. When Anga points them to it, Ono despairs upon realizing that they can't activate the painting without Makini's staff, leaving them unable to confirm if it's really a moja kwa moja stone.

Kion then asks Ono to remember Rafiki's map, saying the Tree of Life must be close by if this is the last moja kwa moja stone. Ono recalls the map, remembering that there is a narrow mountain pass up ahead, with the Tree of Life on the other side. When Anga spots the pass, Kion tells the others to head for it. Fuli tries to stop Kion, believing they should wait until morning when they can see better. Kion turns her down, saying he isn't going to get better just waiting around, leading Ono to assure Fuli that Kion will get better at the Tree of Life, with Fuli hoping he does before telling the others to move.

As the Guard makes its way to the pass, a grey owl named Ullu sees them coming and,  believing the Guard to be a threat, heads into the pass to warn the "Night Pride". As the Guard reaches the pass,

Bunga spots a beehive above the entrance and makes his way towards it, planning on eating the bees and the honey. Ignoring Kion's warnings, Bunga tries to reach for the beehive, dislodging the rocks below him and accidentally causing a rockslide that blocks the entrance to the pass. Enraged, Kion turns to the frightened Guard, angrily asking Bunga why he didn't listen to him before realizing he isn't there.  It is then revealed that Bunga got stuck between the rocks, much to Kion's frustration. Though Makini tries to calm him, Kion snaps at her, pointing how their only entrance to the Tree of Life has been blocked. Kion orders the Guard to start clearing the rocks and set Bunga free. Meanwhile, Ullu is shown to have brought the Night Pride to the pass, revealing them to be a group of brown-furred lions with a marking on their shoulder.

Coming across the newly formed rockslide, their leader, a young lioness named Rani, thanks Ullu for warning them, saying they can take it over from here as the owl leaves.

After fighting for a while, Kion loses his temper and uses the Roar of the Elders on Baliyo, sending him flying. The Roar shocks the Night Pride, with Surak mentioning on having heard stories about it as a young cub. Surak asks Rani on how to proceed, only for her to rush past him in a mad frenzy. At this point, Fuli gets Kion to calm down just in time for him to be tackled by Rani. Holding Kion down, Rani presents herself as the leader of the Night Pride, a group of lions dedicated to protecting animals at the Tree of Life from those who would harm them, making it clear that she sees Kion as a threat. Remorseful, Kion tries to apologize and explain himself, though Rani refuses to listen because she tells Kion that his actions are more powerful than words. Fuli convinces Rani to let him go, saying they don't want to hurt anyone. Kion presents himself to Rani, explaining how he and his friends have traveled all the way to the Tree of Life to get help. Rani, though, treats Kion coldly, reminding him he sent her brother flying with his Roar, and thus she can only imagine the damage he could to everyone at the Tree of Life. Ignoring his protests, Rani furiously tells the Lion Guard they will never be welcomed at the Tree of Life and to leave and never return before departing.

The Lion Guard is left shocked and dismayed at this surprising turn of events, Kion especially. When Anga asks what happens now, Bunga reminds them he is still stuck, prompting them to try and free him. Bunga tries consoling Kion, saying he doesn't have to listen to Rani because he has the Roar and he can use it to fight her.

When Baliyo asks about the strangers, Rani insists that it doesn't matter because they are gone, though she figures she should tell Queen Janna what happened.

Leaving Baliyo with Surak and Nirmala, Rani enters the Tree of Life and makes her way to a chamber deep inside the tree. She approaches the Queen, also revealed to be her grandmother. Rani wakes Janna up and informs her of the strangers that blocked the mountain pass, saying they were being led by a scarred lion, before eventually fighting them off and banishing them. Rani then makes a passive remark to Janna over how the leader had a powerful roar that sent Baliyo flying. Hearing this, Janna's face suddenly turns serious as she muses to herself that the Roar "has finally returned". In the meantime, Kion is seen walking alone in the snow, eventually making his way to the lake of ice and the last moja kwa moja stone, as he reckons with his feelings of guilt and self-pity over his failure. However, noticing the rest of the Guard try to free Bunga, Kion comes to see that there is more to the journey than just him. Realizing things will be fine so long as he has his friends with him, Kion starts making his way back to the pass, by which point the others have managed to free Bunga from the rocks. On his return, Kion admits to the Guard that he lost control of the Roar again.  Believing Rani was right to banish him, Kion apologizes to everyone, noting they've all followed him loyally only for him to ruin everything in the end. The others forgive Kion, knowing he didn't mean to lose control and suggest talking to the Night Pride again to explain themselves. Ono also assures Kion that, even without Tree of Life, they can still find another way to heal Kion's scar. Regaining his confidence, Kion refuses to give up, pointing out how Ono's eyes also need to be healed. Meanwhile, Janna has told Rani about the Elders to Rani, who seems unsure about how it can be a good point.  Reluctant to allow Kion into the Tree of Life, Rani tries to argue by mentioning Kion's scar, only for Janna to explain how they all have their scars, quoting "Sisi ni sawa" at her. Though Rani is still confused, Janna says all will be clear soon enough, for now telling her to bring Kion and the others to the Tree of Life. Obeying Janna, Rani leaves to join the rest of the Night Pride outside, finding Baliyo eager to go back to the pass and force the strangers to leave. Rani, however, explains Janna was actually excited about the roar and has asked that the strangers be welcomed at the Tree of Life.  While Surak and Nirmala agree to the plan, Baliyo protests by arguing that the roar sent him flying, leading Nirmala to calm him. Wanting to be alone, Rani leaves the Night Pride and, some distance away calls for her deceased parents, Sãhasí and Ãnanda, who appear in the clouds shortly. Rani asks them for advice, not fully agreeing with Janna's plan to allow the Lion Guard into the Tree of Life, worried they might cause trouble.  Her parents advised her to trust in Janna, saying she is wise and knows what she's doing. They also encourage her to listen to Janna, noting Rani will be Queen one day too.

Seeing they are right, Rani thanks her parents for their help. The Night Pride is then seen making their way through the canyon, hoping to catch the strangers before they've gone too far. However, they soon find them at the entrance, having cleared the rockslide but not moved closer to the Tree of Life. Surprised, Rani approaches Kion, who apologizes for using the Roar. Kion tells Rani that even if she won't allow him to enter the Tree of Life, he begs her to take Ono instead, noting he wasn't part of the earlier fight and his eyes need to heal, clearly not wanting him to pay for his friend's mistakes.

However, after Janna's death in the episode Long Live the Queen , Rani takes over as the new queen of the Tree of Life.

The River of Patience [ ]

Rani brings the Lion Guard inside the Tree of Life to speak with her grandmother Janna. Janna asks Nirmala to help heal Kion's scar. While Kion is getting healed by Janna, she asks Rani to show the rest of the guard around the Tree of Life. Rani tells them all about the Tree of Life and says that everyone is accepted to be welcomed the tree . Ullu comes to tell Rani some important news. Rani leaves the guard behind. They soon meet Makucha , Chuluun and Ora . The Night Pride fights them off, but when Kion and the Lion Guard arrive thinking they might need help, Rani insists that they can handle it as protecting the Tree of Life is the Night Pride's job. After hearing the descriptions of the animals the Night Pride fought, Kion realizes that Makucha and the others must have followed them. This angers Rani as it confirmed her worst fears about something bad happening if she let the Lion Guard into the Tree of Life as there is now a group of vicious predators on her doorstep. Rani talks to her grandmother about this problem. Janna tells Kion to not worry about protecting the Tree of Life and to concentrate on his healing. Rani asks Nirmala if Kion is healed yet. She says that she is just like him. Makucha and the others come back again and the Night Pride fights them. Baliyo gets bitten by Ora and is left incapacitated. Kion completes his task of getting the flower and arrives just in time to help the Night Pride fight off Makucha and the others. Moments later the rest of the Lion Guard arrives to help too. Rani then realizes that the Night Pride and the Lion Guard make a great team after all and thanks the Lion Guard for their help.

Little Old Ginterbong [ ]

Rani is hanging out with the Lion Guard and her brother. Soon, Kion and Nirmala come along. Kion has mud on his face. Nirmala says it's part of his healing. Nirmala says that Kion has a long way to go before he gets healed. She also says that it's time for Ono to be healed. Ono is excited and he heads off to the Tree of Life. Fuli asks if Bunga can be any noisier when he eats. Baliyo says that Bunga should meet his friend Binga . Rani and the Night Pride soon see Mama Binturong being chased by Makucha's Army not realizing that Mama being attacked was all an act so that she could enter the Tree of Life without raising suspicion. They save Mama and welcome her to the Tree of Life. Kion asks if Rani is here for Ono's healing and Rani says that she's just letting Mama Binturong (calling herself Granny Ginterbong as an alias) into the Tree of Life. After Mama Binturong finds out the weaknesses of the Night Pride and Queen Janna, Rani takes her to a nice place to get some rest but Mama dismisses her telling Rani to get some rest. The Night Pride hears that Makucha's Army is attacking Mama Binturong, but that is actually a decoy because Mama Binturong is on the other side of the Tree of Life so that Makucha's Army could attack Queen Janna undeterred. The plan goes awry and the Night Pride spots Mama Binturong after failing to attack Bunga and claims she was attacked by Binga and Bunga. Bunga explains what really happened and she runs off as Bunga explains who she really is. Before she goes off too far, Bunga and Binga stop her with their stink. Rani tells Ono that he was the one who figured out Mama Binturong's plan and thanks Ono for his help.

Poa the Destroyer [ ]

While all the other members of the Guard are off doing their own things, Beshte goes walking around the Tree of Life to sight see. He meets a polar bear, some penguins, and other amazing animals. However, the animals think that Beshte is a threat. They called him "Poa the Destroyer". After Beshte saves Pinguino 's life, Beshte gets called as "Poa the Life Saver."

Long Live the Queen [ ]

Rani, the Night Pride and the Lion Guard are stopping Makcuha's Army from preventing a family of Tigers from entering the Tree of Life. Makucha's Army is forced to retreat and Rani invites the tigers to see Queen Janna. Ullu soon comes by saying that Queen Janna would like to see her and the Night Pride along with Kion. Rani sees a group of animals surrounding the Tree of Life and Rani realizes that Janna is dying. Baliyo doesn't want to go in, but Rani and the Night Pride offer him emotional support. Queen Janna weakly says her goodbyes to her family and tells Rani that it's time for her to become queen. Rani thinks she isn't ready and Queen Janna says she is and that she has everything she needs to help her. Rani starts to cry as Queen Janna passes away. Kion gives Rani his condolences and Rani thanks him while crying on his shoulder as Kion sheds a tear as well. Makini soon tells the animals of the Tree of Life the sad news. At the funeral, Rani is sad and alone so Kion goes to talk to her. Rani talks about her admiration for her grandmother and is worried she won't measure up to her. Kion encourages her and opens up about his own doubts when he started leading the Lion Guard. Kion tells her that he hasn't been talking to his grandfather Mufasa since he got his scar out of worry that he'll resemble Scar to Mufasa. Rani says they all have scars while showing him the scar on her foreleg while saying "sisi ni sawa" which is what her Grandmother said that convinced Rani to let Kion into the Tree of Life which is a decision Rani is now glad about. Rani tells Kion that just talking to Mufasa might make him feel better and Kion thanks her for the advice while telling Rani she's a lot like her Grandmother which leaves Rani taken aback by the favorable comparison. Makini soon shows Rani all the paintings that she made in the Tree of Life. The tigers soon come back and asks if they can stay at the Tree of Life. Rani says they're welcomed and goes with Bunga to find them a new home. Kion goes to speak to his grandfather. Rani goes to her coronation at sunset. Fuli , Anga and Nirmala greets Rani with a song as she becomes Queen. All the animals cheer and praise her. That night Rani tells her grandmother that she's ready to be queen.

The Lake of Reflection [ ]

Rani and the Night Pride are forced to fight with Makucha's Army at dawn, but the Night Pride is exhausted due to their normal patrol being almost over. Kion and the Lion Guard arrive to try and help fight off their enemies, but Kion's orders interfere with Rani's orders which causes the Night Pride and Lion Guard to stumble and collide into each other. Rani takes full command and they manage to drive off Makucha's Army. Rani tells Kion to follow her lead from now on and that Kion has "potential" to be a great leader which Fuli and Bunga dispute saying that he already is a great leader. Despite being worried that he's not much a leader now when he can't control the Roar, Kion offers the Lion Guard to patrol during the day so that Rani and the Night Pride can rest which Rani accepts. Fuli tells Rani that she's worried that Kion is getting worse because he now lacks confidence in himself while Rani tells Fuli to have faith in Nirmala's healing. But, Rani privately tells the Night Pride she's worried that Fuli is right about Kion's healing progress. Rani goes to see Kion at the lake and Kion is still worried that his scar won't ever heal which means that he can't use the Roar and can't lead the Lion Guard. Fuli and Anga talks to Kion and remembers a time when he was a lot younger. Kion learns that he's always been a leader. Makucha's Army comes back to attack at sunset and Rani is the last to arrive. Since Rani hadn't arrived yet, Kion takes command and Rani is impressed when she makes it to the battle and witnesses Kion effectively leading the Lion Guard and Night Pride in coordinated attacks against the vicious predators. After the battle is won, Rani appears and tells Kion that he is a great leader.

Triumph of the Roar [ ]

Makucha's Army attacks at sunrise again when Rani and the Night Pride are exhausted from finishing their patrol. But Kion and the Lion Guard are well rested and fight the predators. As Kion attacks Makucha, Rani gazes at Kion in admiration. After the battle, Nirmala tells Kion that he should be healed now and The Lion Guard is excited to go home soon. But Rani is troubled by this and asks if Kion has to leave now? Kion eases her concerns since they still have to get rid of Makucha's Army. Rani is relieved by this and she and the Night Pride go get some rest. Bunga goes to the Tree of Life to speak to Rani and disturbs her sleep. Bunga thinks there's something weird going on with Kion regarding his Roar and Makini says that Kion is still working on his roar. Makini teaches Rani all about Askari , the first leader of the Lion Guard. She says that Askari would go to Chikha Escarpment to practice the Roar. Rani has an epiphany about Kion and the Roar and she wants to see him alone, but Bunga insists on tagging along and she reluctantly brings him with her. They watch Kion using the Roar in different ways and are astonished. Soon they hear about Makucha's Army attacking animals at the Tree of Life. Anga brings them and Kion uses the full extent of his new Roar abilities on them. He blasts them with concentrated bursts, creates twisters, and even summons lightning to free the Night Pride trapped behind a boulder in the Tree of Life. Everybody including Rani is amazed at Kion's new power. Finally, Kion roars up a tornado that sweeps up every member of Makucha's Army and sends them all far far away from the Tree of Life, ending their threat for good. After witnessing the full power of Kion's Roar, Rani asks Kion and the Lion Guard to stick around instead of returning to the Pride Lands which leaves them stunned.

Journey to the Pride Lands [ ]

After Kion is finished speaking to Mufasa, Rani comes up to Kion and asks if he's made his choice about staying at the Tree of Life. They both think that they make a great team and confess their feelings for each other singing " Of the Same Pride ." and Rani says that she could use Kion's help to maintain peace at the Tree of Life which Kion says she doesn't need anyone's help with since she's already a great leader. Rani thanks Kion for the compliment and says that she wants to be a great Queen as well and that a great Queen could use a great King and floats the idea of Kion being her King and mate. Before Kion can answer, the guard arrives and they're wondering why they haven't departed yet. Rani wishes that they would consider staying and most of the Lion Guard is open to the idea except for Fuli who is reluctant. Soon, Azaad comes and Fuli asks how Rani knows him. She says that he's been to the Tree of Life before. She asks why he's here and he says that he was showing travelers how to get to the Tree of Life. Their friends, Janja and Jasiri come and tells the guard that Zira and her Pride have returned. Kion knows that it's his duty to protect the Pride Lands from Zira and decides to head back. Rani says goodbye to the Guard and tells Kion that she meant what she said and Rani hopes that maybe the Roar will return to the Tree of Life again someday.

Return to the Pride Lands [ ]

After relinquishing his title of Leader of the Lion Guard to Vitani and giving her the ability to use the Roar, Askari appears in the sky and commends Kion for truly mastering the Roar. Kion is confused why he still has the Roar and Askari tells him that there's another place that needs the Roar's help. Kion asks his Lion Guard if they would like to join him in protecting the Tree of Life as part of the Night Pride. They all say yes and head back. With all of Kion's family and friends and other Pride Animals watching him, Kion marries Rani and becomes King of the Tree of Life.

Lion King at 30: the global hit that Disney didn’t believe in

Thirty years ago audiences were introduced to the epic story of one little lion’s journey to find himself and his family. Little did Disney know what a roaring success the Lion King would be when it was released in 1994. In fact, they fully expected it wouldn’t be.

In the 80s and 90s, the movie studio experienced huge hits with the animated films The Little Mermaid (1989) and Beauty and the Beast (1991). This left many of the creatives at the Disney studio keen to continue making princess stories . Disney executive and Hollywood stalwart Jeffrey Katzenberg was banking on Pocahontas (1995) to be their next hit.

Therefore, the Lion King’s development was undertaken by artists and storytellers who were expected to produce something that would only ever be second best. It’s this underdog feeling that resulted in a hungry and competitive creative team producing this original hit story (it’s not a direct retelling of Hamlet , as some might think).

Taking heed of its immediate film predecessors, Disney ensured the movie put music at the forefront of its storytelling, teaming up film scorist Hans Zimmer (Rain Man, Gladiator) with lyricist Tim Rice (Aladdin, Jesus Christ Superstar) and acclaimed international pop star Elton John. This combination of talent resulted in a soundtrack that won the film two Oscars in 1995 ( best score and best original song for Can You Feel The Love Tonight? ). The songs and music have played a critical role in the cultural and commercial impact of The Lion King. While some elements might change, in nearly every adaptation the songs have remained.

The measure of success often used for movies is box office revenue, and the film’s 1994 total was US$763 million (£603 million) worldwide. Compare that with Disney’s previous great successes, The Little Mermaid US$84 million worldwide and Beauty and the Beast US$249 million . Pocahontas, the great hope, also failed to outperform The Lion King bringing in US$142 million .

Its success spawned direct-to-video sequels, including The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride. In 1997, the film was adapted into a musical theatre production , which, as well as touring globally, is a permanent fixture in the West End of London and on Broadway in New York. Then in 2019, Disney released a live-action remake . And now, as the original celebrates its 30th anniversary, the prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King , will hit cinemas.

Disney has cleverly followed the fans with these iterations. The 1997 stage adaptation tapped into the late 90s resurgence in live musical theatre . Since its debut the musical has received 70 major arts awards, including the 1999 Grammy for best musical show album and the 1999 Laurence Olivier awards for best choreography and best costume design.

Then 25 years after the original’s release, Disney decided to remake The Lion King (following other hits such as Beauty and the Beast remake in 2017) – but the social environment had changed. In 2019, the “live action” remake of the movie ensured that this story set in Africa was rightly cast with majority Black performers . The cast introduced new names, but also attracted huge stars, including Beyoncé Knowles-Carter who voiced the character Nala.

After The Lion King’s early success, Disney’s subsequent movies (including Pocahontas) did not live up to commercial expectations. From the mid-90s, Disney’s dominance at the animated movie box office was overtaken by Pixar and their hits, including Toy Story.

Disney experienced inconsistent success until 2010 when they embraced CGI 3D animation as the primary production technique for their movies. This new style was applied to their tried-and-tested format of retelling classic fairytales and placing music at the heart of the storytelling, leading to hits such as Tangled (2010) and Frozen (2013).

The Lion King’s enduring success should be a stand-out moment of clarity for Disney: with a focus on good quality animation and solid music storytelling, even the unexpected can become a roaring success.

Tree of Life Synagogue to Break Ground on New Sanctuary, and New Mission

A museum on the history of antisemitism will be part of the new building, alongside a memorial to the 11 worshipers killed in the 2018 attack in Pittsburgh.

A view of a corner of the Tree of Life synagogue, its name in Hebrew and English on the facade of the building.

By Campbell Robertson

Campbell Robertson was based in Pittsburgh from 2017 to 2022 and covered the Tree of Life attack and its aftermath.

Debates over antisemitism have flared for months on college campuses, in local government meetings and in Congress, in many cases boiling down to bitter disagreements over what is, and what is not, antisemitism.

There was no such argument five and a half years ago in Pittsburgh. When 11 worshipers were killed at the Tree of Life synagogue on Oct. 27, 2018, the gunman who carried out the massacre was blunt in his bigotry, declaring beforehand on social media that he was acting out of a conviction that Jewish people were conspiring to replace the white race.

On Sunday, members of the Tree of Life congregation will gather to break ground for a memorial and a new Tree of Life building. The airy, angular structure, designed by the architect Daniel Libeskind , will house a sanctuary for the Tree of Life congregation — one of three congregations that were meeting at the synagogue at the time of the shooting — an education center dedicated to combating bigotry and a museum chronicling the long history of antisemitism in America.

It is a story that has gotten more complicated to tell since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7 and the war that has followed.

“It makes our job harder, and I’m sure we’re going to have to wade into some fairly difficult waters,” said Michael Bernstein, the chair of the Tree of Life board of directors. But “that is the point of what we have to do,” he added, “to allow people to engage in this much more deeply.”

The museum will be the first in the United States dedicated exclusively to the history of antisemitism in America, from the colonial days through the hard-line anti-immigrant politics of the mid-20th century to the neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, Va., in 2017, and beyond. The museum will show how the mass shooting at Tree of Life was an especially dark day, but nonetheless part of an old affliction in America.

“We need to go through that story to get to the kind of narrative arc to where an event like this can happen, and be understood,” said Ralph Appelbaum, who designed the museum and whose firm designed the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington and galleries at the International African American Museum in Charleston, S.C.

This will be different from many of his other projects, Mr. Appelbaum said, primarily because of where it is: “one of the rare instances that we have in America of building something on a site of such violence, where the context is clear and not historical.”

The motive for that violence was indeed clear, explained by the killer in hate-filled rants on social media. Pittsburghers of many different faiths rallied to support the survivors and denounce the antisemitism behind the attack. The phrase “stronger than hate” quickly became a mantra for the whole city.

But recently, that kind of unity has been in short supply.

Debates over the Hamas-led terror attack and Israel’s military response in Gaza have tested and broken old alliances, forcing many people to take a position on whether or when opposition to the Israeli government’s actions becomes synonymous with antisemitism. There are disagreements about this within the Jewish community and even within the Tree of Life congregation. How the museum would address these matters is among the questions facing the congregation.

Diane Rosenthal, 63, whose brothers Cecil and David Rosenthal were killed in the attack, said the exhibits and programs are in the early planning stages. But she hopes that the museum will play a key role in informing the current debates.

“With what’s going on on campuses, I think education is even more important,” she said. “The rhetoric out there on social media does such a poor job from an Israeli and Jewish perspective. I look at this new institution as a place where people can really get a true education.”

This concerns Alexandra Weiner, 25, a math instructor at the University of Pittsburgh. Ms. Weiner has been a member of Tree of Life since she was a child and was on her way to services there on the morning of the shooting. She has also been outspoken against the Israeli government on her campus, with her criticism drawing complaints from pro-Israel groups and at least one Jewish student.

She fears that the museum will be pressured to adopt a definition of antisemitism that does not allow for a critical view of the politics of Israel.

“I’m very worried about what a museum about the history of American antisemitism would look like at Tree of Life,” she said. “And I think that’s incredibly sad.”

Those in synagogue leadership, as well as some of the academic advisers who have been brought on to help shape the museum, said the new institution was not envisioned as a place that would deliver definitive answers on heated public questions. The museum will provide historical context, and the education center will be a place where difficult questions can be debated and discussed.

It is “more to be a space that honors and explores these complicated issues,” said Carole Zawatsky, the chief executive of Tree of Life.

She and other officials pointed out that focusing only on issues in the most recent headlines would miss other, dangerous expressions of antisemitism in the country festering outside of public view. There was, after all, a long history behind the hatred harbored by the Tree of Life gunman, who was convicted last summer and sentenced to death. But in 2018, no one realized the threat he posed to the synagogue and the deeply rooted Jewish community around it.

“I think we see what happens,” Ms. Zawatsky said, “when the public forgets too quickly.”
