Man Utd's Treble trophy laundry secret

F ormer Manchester United kit-man Albert Morgan was literally the last-man standing after the club's momentous 1999 Treble celebrations.

I bumped into Morgan at the launch of the three-part Prime Video documentary launch in Manchester last night and he told me about the novel method he came up with to deal with an anxious dilemma about what to do with the trophies after the team's appearance at what was then the Manchester Arena.

"Someone had to look after the trophies and you are always the last man standing as the kit man," he said. "Everyone goes home and you are left to deal with it.

"After the event at the arena, I went back to Old Trafford on the open top bus.

"I did think about taking the trophies home but I was sensible for once.

"It would just have been my luck to take them home, someone to see me and for my house to get broken into. You can imagine the headlines if that happened.

"So instead, I left them in the laundry for safe keeping. When I went back the next morning, the laundry girls had got them all out and were playing with them."

The unsung heroes remember Manchester United treble season 21 years later

Man Utd completed the treble 21 years ago today but some of that squad had cameo roles in an incredible season and their parts have largely been forgotten.

As Manchester United's victorious squad rolled down Deansgate in late May 1999, taking in the adulation of hundreds of thousands of Mancunians still drunk on the delirium of the night before, Blackburn Rovers' players were licking their wounds after relegation from the Premier League.

That might seem like a strange place to start a story about the most historic season in United's history, but had John Curtis made a different decision 12 months earlier he might have been watching those celebrations from afar thinking: "what have I done?".

With Wes Brown emerging into the first-team squad and Jaap Stam arriving from PSV Eindhoven, Curtis knew his chances in 1998/99 would be limited, which is why he gave serious thought to a move to Ewood Park.

In the end he opted to stay at Old Trafford. Curtis did sign for Blackburn in 2000, but by then he had the memories a front row seat to history to take with him.

"I only played three or four games, but I was there or thereabouts all the time which was special to me," Curtis told the MEN about his role in United's treble season.

"Maybe that [move to Blackburn] would have been good for me to do a year before, but looking back now I think what a travesty that would have been if I’d missed that season, even though I was only on the periphery, to have been part of that and looking back now, what an amazing experience."

Like Curtis, Raimond van der Gouw's chances were limited in 98/99. Being back-up to the best goalkeeper in the world can be a thankless task, but the popular Dutchman did start four Premier League games and as Peter Schmeichel's number two he often had one of the best seats in the house to see history being made.

One of van der Gouw's appearances came in January when Schmeichel, below his best in the first half of the season, was sent on a mid-season holiday by Sir Alex Ferguson .

"Peter Schmeichel was not in his best form and halfway through the season the manager said ‘ok Peter, you go on holiday and Raimond can play, and you can come back fresh’," van der Gouw told the MEN from Holland.

"That season Schmeichel made some mistakes in the first half of the season so he had a couple of weeks off. From the moment he returned he was fantastic."

United had come up empty-handed the year before, with Arsenal winning the double under Arsene Wenger. Curtis remembers Ferguson being more determined than ever in the summer of 1998 and normal service was quickly resumed.

"Coming through the ranks and only being a young kid it was like ‘well, this is Manchester United, this is what should happen’," Curtis said. "Since I'd signed in the early 90s it was just success after success after success, so it felt like par for the course."

man utd treble bus tour

Van der Gouw describes how the 98/99 season came together "like a puzzle". Time and again United rescued games late on, in all competitions.

One of Curtis' most vivid memories was being on the bench for the Champions League group stage draw with Barcelona in the Nou Camp. Both games finished 3-3 but Barcelona's late equaliser in Catalonia was a particularly heavy blow to a youngster in the matchday squad.

"My most vivid memory is when we played Barca in the Nou Camp in the group stages and it finished 3-3," he said.

"As a young lad I got loads of win bonus money because of the success of that season, me and Willo (Mark Wilson) were on the bench, when they equalised late on I remember being absolutely devastated and it panned to the bench and I had my head in the hands as it had cost me £10,000 in a Champions League win bonus."

Seeing £10,000 snatched away by Rivaldo would soon prove to be a minor issue as the momentum gathered behind United.

In the space of 11 days in May they won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League to claim an historic treble. While Curtis was now consigned to the role of squad member, van der Gouw was on the bench throughout.

After winning the domestic double United headed to the Nou Camp to face Bayern Munich. As kick-off approached van der Gouw chatted to Phil Neville on the bench.

"Before the game Phil Neville was sat next to me and he said ‘so Raimond, what do you think?’. I had the prediction we’d win the game 2-1," the sooth-saying Dutchman said.

man utd treble bus tour

"Then we were 1-0 down, as the game went on, there was about 15 minutes left, Phil said again ‘what do you think Raimond?’ and I thought it was going to be difficult then, it didn’t look like we were controlling the game, Bayern had chances to score.

"But we stayed in the game, it was 1-0 when [Lothar] Matthaus went off and it looked like the game was in their pocket. We scored to equalise and then the second one came a couple of minutes later. It was crazy, like being in a dream.

"I came off the bench to celebrate the first goal and I was just sitting down again and I was straight back up the run on the pitch for the second one.

"In 11 days we won all three trophies, it was a whirlwind, we were living in a bubble."

The celebrations that followed were "out of this world" according to Curtis. "I will never forget those celebrations," adds van der Gouw. Both men described the bus tour through Manchester to the arena that followed their return from Barcelona as like being the first man back from the moon.

Even now two decades have passed, that squad's place in history remains secure, thanks to a near miss from their neighbours last season.

"I was cheering on Tottenham against City in the Champions League [in 2018/19], when that goal went in to stop them winning the quadruple I was pleased to say the least," Curtis said. "I didn’t want that achievement overshadowed, especially by City."

It's 11 days in May that might never be overshadowed.

‘We really were a dream team’: Manchester United’s path to a historic treble in 1999

Manchester United

It was more than an hour after Manchester United had won the Champions League to complete the treble before the players began to stumble out of their dressing room in the bowels of the vast, and now virtually empty, Camp Nou in Barcelona. They were all dressed in grey Versace suits bearing the club crest, and their enormous and bewildered smiles captured a mood that veered between elation, relief and utter bemusement. Each player had a Champions League winners medal swinging from their necks, which David Beckham has since admitted he didn’t remove, and slept with for several days afterward.

A swarm of media thrust microphones and television cameras at them, with requests to describe how they were feeling, and explain what had just happened.

Gary Neville, who had been at the club since he was 11 years old, paused for the right words. “It was supernatural,” he stammered, shaking his head. “It certainly wasn’t skill and ability that won us the game. It was something else, and I can’t understand what it was. It was like nothing I have ever experienced before in my life.”

No one ever had. At that moment, it was the greatest achievement by a club from one of Europe’s leading five leagues, and the first time anyone from England, Italy, Spain, France or Germany had won their domestic double of league and cup, and the Champions League in the same season.

It has since been achieved by Barcelona in 2009 and 2015, Inter in 2010 and Bayern Munich in 2013. But United were the first. And despite the riches poured into Chelsea and Manchester City, they remain the only English club to have ever won the treble.

Twenty years ago, United created history to win the Premier League, the FA Cup and, on that warm and incredible night in Barcelona, the Champions League, when they beat Bayern Munich 2-1 with two goals during injury time.

At the start of the season, there had been no sense United were on the brink of history. A year earlier, they finished with nothing, having been forced into second place after losing the title to a rejuvenated Arsenal side guided by Arsene Wenger.

His counterpart at United, Alex Ferguson, knew his squad needed major investment if they were to dislodge Arsenal and compete for a Champions League trophy they had not won since 1968.

In the summer of 1998, Ferguson’s purchases were not universally hailed. There were doubts, but in time they would be seen as surgically brilliant.

United signed the hulking presence of Dutch defender Jaap Stam from PSV Eindhoven for £10.75 million—then a world record for a defender—to replace Gary Pallister in the center of defense. I traveled to The Netherlands to meet Stam only a few days after he signed for United, and found a gentle and shy man with a steely determination, and no shortage of confidence in his ability.

“Which other defenders would you compare yourself to?” I asked. “I’ve heard some even compare you to the legendary Franco Baresi.”

“No, I’m quite a bit quicker,” he replied flatly.

“How about Frank Rijkaard?”

“Yes, we are similar, but I’m faster.”

“Are you a hard man?”

“A player recently came at me with a headbutt, so I grabbed him and put him in a headlock… he looked a bit blue when I let him go.”

“How will you stop Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars?”

“I have my ways.”

“How did you deal with Ronaldo when you played against him?”

“He didn’t give me any problems.”

In the same summer, Ferguson had made clear he needed to augment his forward line, and there were flirtations with two of the world’s best strikers: Patrick Kluivert and Gabriel Batistuta. So it came as a surprise when United eventually signed Dwight Yorke from Aston Villa for a club-record fee of £12.6 million.

The striker had always impressed in the Premier League, but there were real doubts about whether he could step up to the task at United—not only amongst United’s fans, but with the club’s assistant manager, Brian Kidd, and captain Roy Keane

“In my very first training session I remember Roy Keane blasting the ball straight at me,” said Yorke in 2006. “He seemed to be saying, ‘How much are you really worth? Let’s see if you can control this?’ It was his way of testing me, his way of making a statement and providing his own special welcome. I took his pass down and controlled it. I hope that answered him.”

Yorke would continue to answer every question asked of him, proving to be an inspired signing. He formed a famous partnership with Andy Cole, and finished as the club’s leading scorer with 29 goals.

Ferguson had Ryan Giggs on his left wing, but knew that, over a long season, he would need quality cover. So he also brought in the Swedish winger Jesper Blomqvist from Parma for £4.4 million.

But United suffered an underwhelming start to the season, twice losing 3-0 to new champions Arsenal—in the Charity Shield at Wembley, and then again in the league at Highbury in September: a result which would leave them languishing 10th in the table.

At the start of October, Ferguson paired Yorke with Cole at Southampton, which United won 3-0. Both strikers scored.

“We hit it off straight away,” Cole recalled. “We didn’t talk to each other, we didn’t discuss anything, it just happened. We just instinctively knew where the other one was on the pitch. From that day, the manager realized how good we were together. Let’s be honest, he stumbled upon it. We weren’t what he was looking for, he really wanted Kluivert to play with Yorkie. He struck gold and the rest is history.”

The pair would dovetail together perfectly—Yorke in the deeper role, scheming away and slipping through passes, but also clinical in the penalty area, and Cole with his pace and predatory finishing. Together they would score 53 goals between them that season.

In the Champions League, United had been placed in the “group of death” alongside Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Brondby, but emerged as runners-up to Bayern without losing a game. They drew twice against the Germans: first narrowly missing victory in Munich when an 89th-minute Teddy Sheringham own goal gave Bayern an equalizer, then once again squandering a one-goal lead at Old Trafford in December. They also twice played Barcelona to a 3-3 scoreline and beat Brondby 6-2 and 5-0 to reach the quarterfinals.

By the end of the year, United were third in the Premier League table, trailing Aston Villa (39 points) and Chelsea (37), and level with Arsenal (35). They had already suffered three league defeats, including a surprise 3-2 loss to Middlesbrough six days before Christmas. This defeat was one of the rare occasions Ferguson had missed a game, due to a family bereavement. He watched it on video before calling a meeting of his players.

“There is nothing wrong with the quality of your game or your effort,” he told them. “So let’s get the show on the road.”

It would prove to be the most enthralling show in the history of English football. United did not lose again for the rest of the season, remaining unbeaten for 33 games to win three trophies.

Goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, in his final season at Old Trafford, showed why some consider him the greatest goalkeeper to ever play the game. The back four staffed by the unrivaled Stam, the calmness of Ronny Johnsen and the consistent brilliance of Denis Irwin and Gary Neville. But it was the midfield of Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, captain Roy Keane and David Beckham that made this United side truly special—the greatest in the club’s history, some would argue beyond that, too.

“When I look back I can’t quite believe how lucky I was to play with David Beckham on one wing and Ryan Giggs on the other,” said Yorke. “They were a striker’s dream. It was an absolute pleasure to have those guys either side of me. From the right, Becks created so many goals by whipping in his crosses while, from the left, Giggsy would beat a man and get you the ball. In the middle, Keane was a fierce competitor—he would dominate games, thundering around the middle of the field with that manic look in his eyes. Scoring goals was easy with that midfield behind me. We really were a dream team. You won’t ever get a better team.”

A clue to what lay ahead came in January, when United were trailing 1-0 to Liverpool with two minutes remaining in an FA Cup fourth-round tie at Old Trafford. Yorke tapped in an equalizer, but there were no thoughts of a replay on the pitch. Instead, United went in search of a winner, which arrived during injury time with a low strike from Solskjaer. Cue Bedlam in the stands and pitch.

“This was a demonstration of the morale that was to be every bit as vital as skill in the months that lay ahead,” wrote Ferguson.

United kept up their pursuit of three trophies throughout the spring, remaining top of the Premier League with expansive, almost exhibition football, beating Leicester City 6-2 and Nottingham Forest 8-1. At the Champions League quarterfinal stage, United brushed aside the might of an Inter side boasting Ronaldo, Ivan Zamorano and Javier Zanetti, winning 3-1 over two legs.

In the FA Cup semifinal, a replay was required after United and Arsenal fought out a goalless draw in the first game. The 30,223 spectators who returned to Villa Park three days later were witnesses to one of the competition’s greatest ever games.

United took the lead in the first half with a wonderful strike from David Beckham, only for Arsenal to equalize with a deflected shot from Dennis Bergkamp. With United reduced to 10 men after Roy Keane’s sending off, the game looked to be heading into extra time until Phil Neville brought down Ray Parlour in the area to give Arsenal a penalty in the last minute of the game. Distraught United fans began edging to the exit, only for Bergkamp’s penalty to be saved by Schmeichel. The treble was still alive.

Throughout extra time, a tired United looked to be holding on for penalties. Enter Ryan Giggs. The Welshman, on as a substitute, intercepted a wayward pass from Patrick Vieira and headed toward the Arsenal goal.

“It was all instinct, there was no one in front of me, so I just put my head down and went towards the goal,” Giggs once said. “There was no way I was going to pass it. I skipped past a challenge from Vieira, then Dixon and Vieira again. I was then in between Dixon and Keown, and I got past them to give me a shot at David Seaman. My thought was just to hit it as hard as I could.”

It was, without question, the greatest goal scored by a Manchester United player.

“Ryan’s goal was meant to be,” said Arsenal captain Tony Adams afterwards. “A higher power was at work.”

A week later, United faced Juventus in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal at the Stadio Delle Alpi. The first leg had finished 1-1 at Old Trafford and, after just 11 minutes, United were 2-0 behind and seemingly on their way out of Europe.

“We were left looking around at each other, thinking ‘It’s not going to happen for us tonight,’” Yorke recalled. “We needed something to get us going, some spark, and Keano provided it with his glancing header to get us back in the game. We really dug deep and started to play our natural game. You don’t get many chances to reach a Champions League final.”

Yorke scored a header of his own to bring United level at 2-2, then they won both the game and tie when Andy Cole scored with six minutes remaining, completing an incredible comeback to reach their first Champions League final for 31 years.

Back in the Premier League, the race for the title had come down to the final weekend of the season. Now a point ahead of Arsenal, United knew that, if they could beat Tottenham at Old Trafford, they would be champions. Les Ferdinand gave the north Londoners the lead in the first half, but United swarmed forward and Beckham equalized before halftime. Cole put United in front three minutes into the second half, and United held on to become champions. One down, two to go.

In the FA Cup final, United faced Newcastle, who provided little resistance. Goals from Sheringham and Paul Scholes delivered a 2-0 win, securing the club’s third domestic double in five years. But such a historic moment felt like a mere warm-up with the Champions League final only four days later.

United knew that, for all their success during this season, they would possibly be remembered more for the one that got away if they failed to add the Champions League. This was also the trophy Ferguson wanted above all others, for he knew his own career would feel incomplete without winning it.

“Europe had become a personal crusade,” he wrote. “I knew I would never be judged a great manager until I won the European Cup.”

In the final, Ferguson could not call upon Keane or Scholes, who were both banned after picking up yellow cards against Juventus. He had to remodel his renowned midfield, with Beckham now in the middle, Blomqvist on the left and Giggs on the right. After only six minutes, Bayern Munich took the lead through a surprisingly tame free kick from Mario Basler that skidded along the ground and evaded a wrong-footed Schmeichel.

But this didn’t rouse United, who were poor throughout the normal 90 minutes of the final, failing to produce anything worthy of being labeled a genuine chance.

“At no stage did we actually get going,” said Cole. “We had played Bayern twice that season and had no problems, so we fancied ourselves. But the game turned out to be really bitty. It just wasn’t us, and I was shocked at how we were playing.”

At halftime, United’s players knew they hadn’t turned up, as Ferguson delivered the most important team talk of his career.

“If you lose you will be six feet away from the European Cup, but you won’t be able to touch it,” he told them. “And you will hate that thought for the rest of your lives. So just make sure you don’t lose. Don’t you dare come back in here without giving your all.”

For the next 45 minutes, United were again timid and disjointed, with Bayern coming the closest to scoring. Mehmet Scholl hit the inside of the post with a chip and Carsten Jancker struck the underside of the crossbar with an overhead kick. Ferguson later wrote that, as the fourth official held up his board to indicate there were only three minutes of injury time to be played, he had all but given up hope, and was even thinking how he would explain defeat.

Then UEFA President Lennart Johansson had already left his seat and was practicing how to congratulate Bayern’s players in German, while his colleague, Gerhard Aigner, was tying Bayern’s ribbons on to the trophy. But United had come from behind to win or draw 17 games during this season, so they weren’t without hope.

“Knowing there were three minutes remaining I felt my first twinge of despair, and thought, ‘Maybe this has slipped away,’” York recalled. “But just as quickly I thought ‘We’re Man United, we’ve done it before, and can do it again. We just need a goal.’”

Only 22 seconds into added time, United won a corner. Beckham swung it over and the ball ricocheted around the area before falling to Sheringham, who steered it into the net. As 50,000 United fans collapsed onto each other in relief, Ferguson muttered to himself, “Something is happening out there.”

Nine minutes before the end of normal time, Ferguson had brought on Norwegian striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has since spoken about having a premonition he would score. On the day of the game, Solskjaer had phoned a friend back in Norway. “ He couldn’t make it to Spain, so I wanted to check if he was going to watch the game. He said: ‘Yeah, but I’m going to have to leave 15 minutes from time.’ He’s a nurse and he had the night shift. I told him he had to watch the whole game: ‘Get someone to step in for you for an hour.’ Because I had this feeling something big was going to happen to me. It’s hard to explain, it was just a feeling.”

He was right. Only 58 seconds later, United won another corner. Again Beckham swung the ball in, Sheringham glanced it on and there was Solskjaer to toe the ball into the roof of the German net.

As Solskjaer disappeared amid a gaggle of shocked teammates, the Bayern players fell to the ground. Ghanian defender Sammy Kuffour repeatedly punched the turf.

After being presented with the trophy, United’s players chaired Ferguson around the pitch, then stayed out there for the next hour to savor every moment with the United fans packed into three tiers of the Camp Nou.

“What we did will last for a very long time,” Yorke later said. “I’m sure someone will do it again one day, but until then we are the only English side to have won the treble.”

“I cherish that season, I feel so proud that I was in that team,” Cole said. “You can look back and say, ‘I was in that team.’ I made history with my teammates. I collected loads of memorabilia from that season.”

The party went late into the night, both for the players at a hotel and the fans on Barcelona’s Las Ramblas. The following morning, before the team returned home to be greeted by an estimated 750,000 on the streets of Manchester, Ferguson reflected on the previous nine months.

“I feel a sense of fulfillment I did not feel before,” he said. “Maybe we were meant to win it, maybe there was an element of destiny. I know people will never forget this team… They are the legends.”

Man Utd treble winner is unrecognisable 25 years on and is now living a very different life

Man Utd treble winner is unrecognisable 25 years on and is now living a very different life

One former man utd player now leads a totally different life..

Ryan Smart

A former Manchester United player looks unrecognisable after helping his team to win the treble in 1999.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side infamously came from behind to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 at Camp Nou, through injury time goals from Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, to win their third trophy of the season.

They had already won the Premier League - which went down to the last day of the season - and the FA Cup before arriving in Barcelona .

Most of the United XI that lined up Bayern still remain prominent figures when it comes to being involved in football, including Gary Neville , Ryan Giggs, Peter Schmeichel and, of course, David Beckham .

But one player who wasn't present in the squad was Roy Keane , with the Republic of Ireland midfielder suspended after being sent off in the semi-final second leg against Juventus.

And with Paul Scholes also suspended, Ferguson had some key decisions to make when it came to selecting the midfield section of the starting XI.

Ultimately, the Scot chose Beckham in central midfield, with Sweden international Jesper Blomqvist playing on the left of midfield.

man utd treble bus tour

Blomqvist actually went on to have perhaps the most interesting post-playing career of any his former team-mates.

He officially retired from football in 2010, at the age of 36, after spells with Everton, Charlton and three teams in his native Sweden.

Away from football, Blomqvist is passionate about cooking, and even had his own cooking show on United's in-house MUTV channel titled 'Cooking with Jesper'.

He opened up his own pizzeria after retirement, and won Sweden's Celebrity Masterchef competition last year.

Speaking to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet about his success, he said: "I felt that there were people who were a little better in terms of knowledge, but I thought the competition itself was a bit difficult.

Alongside his cookery exploits, Blomqvist is still involved with football, as he regularly plays in the Manchester United Legends side.

In 2015, he scored in his home city as United Legends defeated Liverpool Legends in Stockholm.

man utd treble bus tour

He told MUTV : "It feels fantastic, and to be home here in Stockholm makes it even more special.

"To raise money for the charities is a big part of why we are doing this; I've seen myself last year doing some work with the Foundation at their Street Reds projects in Manchester, so I know it's for a great cause."

Man Utd's Treble trophy laundry secret

Former Manchester United kit-man Albert Morgan was literally the last-man standing after the club's momentous 1999 Treble celebrations.
