The driving takes place entirely on interstates, meaning it is a quick, as well as scenic route. It also makes the navigation a breeze. If you do decide to travel in winter it is also unlikely you will have to contend with road closures, as you will be staying on major roads.

There are a few cities on the way where traffic could be an issue, notably Pittsburgh and Cleveland. The best advice we can give is to try avoiding these places at rush hour.

How to drive from New York to Chicago

The map above shows our suggestions for the best road trip routes between New York and Chicago. Keep reading for detailed descriptions of both routes, where to stay on either, and the best things to do on the way.

The Direct Route

Leave New York City via the Holland Tunnel, then stay on Interstate 78 which will take you out of Newark, heading towards Allentown. Shortly after Fredericksburg you will need to leave I-78 and merge with Interstate 81 South.

Interstate 81 will take you through Harrisburg and out to Carlisle, where you will join Interstate 76. You will now be entering rolling forested land and will continue through this scenery on I-76.

Set your sights on Pittsburgh, which is your next major city on your route. I-76 will lead around the outskirts, or if you want to detour into the city use Interstate 376 and then Interstate 279.

Whether you head into Pittsburgh or detour around it, you'll continue your journey following I-76 towards Cleveland.

Just after Youngstown, leave I-76 for Interstate 80 taking you in the direction of Cleveland, passing Cuyahoga Valley National Park along the way.

To detour into Cleveland, join Interstate 77 to reach the downtown area. Or if you'd prefer to continue straight on towards Chicago, simply stick to I-80 to bypass the city.

It would be a shame to pass through the area without taking a little time exploring the shores of Lake Erie, so we'd recommend a short diversion from the Interstate before you carry on west.

First, you'll head to Huron, where you can visit the historic lighthouse and Sheldon Marsh States Nature Preserve.

If you're coming from Cleveland, simply pick up OH-2/I-90 out of the city. If you haven't visited Cleveland, leave the I-80 at Exit 145, following OH-57 onto OH-2.

Next, take Exit 147 from OH-2 and turn right at the stop sign at the end of the ramp. When you reach Route 6, turn left towards Huron.

When you're ready to move on, continue along Route 6 towards the waterside town of Sandusky, home to Cedar Point Amusement Park.

From here, follow OH-4 which will lead you back to I-80. Interstate 80 will eventually become Interstate 90, which will take you past Toledo and along the border with Michigan.

You still have one more state to cross. As I-90 takes you west across Indiana, Elkhart and South Bend are both interesting places to stop. Visit the Hall of Heroes Superhero Museum in Elkhart, and tour the campus of Notre Dame University in South Bend before continuing towards Chicago.

Before long Lake Michigan will be on your right-hand side, and Chicago will be looming in the distance. Indiana Dunes National Park is just off the route, a great place to clear your head before you head into the city.

From here, Interstate 90 will take you directly into the heart of Chicago, and your exploration of the city can begin.

The Detroit Detour

If you have a little extra time, you might like to include Detroit on your route between Cleveland and Chicago. It's a relatively short detour that only adds 1 hour and 30 minutes of driving to the trip and lets you see more of the shores of Lake Erie and Lake Michigan.

From Sandusky, follow OH-2, passing Magee Marsh Wildlife Area and Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge before joining I-280 North and then merging onto Interstate 75.

I-75 takes you right into Detroit, the home of Motown, where you can enjoy a stroll through the Cultural Center Historic District and visit some of the city's world-class museums, before checking out the city's live music scene for an evening.

When you're ready to move on, leave Detroit via Interstate 96 W. Next, join M-14 to travel past Ann Arbor where you'll pick up Interstate 94, following it all the way across Michigan.

The I-94 takes you almost as far as Chicago, but before you arrive in the city you might like to divert to Silver Beach, in the town of St. Joseph on the shores of Lake Michigan.

After passing near Indiana Dunes National Park you'll join up with the I-90, following it into the heart of Chicago to complete your trip.

A 134-mile drive going southeast on I-80 will take you to your next stop: Pittsburgh, also known as Steel City. 

Famous for its steel production, fine architecture, and 446 bridges, this destination in Pennsylvania offers a plethora of things to do for kids and adults alike. You’ll need at least two days to really savor what the city has in store for you. 

Long gone are the days when the coal industry’s soot and grit defined the city. Today, Pittsburgh is a thriving arts and culture center, and a haven for nature lovers because of its privileged location on a plateau at the point where the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers form a triangle. 

Besides a thriving gastronomical nightlife scene, Pittsburgh is home to marvelous attractions like the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden , the Cathedral of Learning, a Gothic Revival skyscraper that towers above the University of Pittsburgh campus at 535 feet tall, and the Andy Warhol Museum . Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

68 miles from Lancaster, going east on I-76, you’ll find Philadelphia, a stunning city full of historic landmarks and other highlights for the whole family. Again, our recommendation is to try to make it a two-day stop here so as to have enough time to explore the best sites. 

You simply can’t visit Philly without exploring the Historic District. After all, the area between Delaware River, 7th, Vine, and Lombard streets that span the original city boundaries is one of the key points where the US was born! 

You’ll find several historic sites and iconic buildings here, including but not limited to Independence Hall – where the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were written  – and President’s House, the home of George Washington and John Adams during the 1700s when Philadelphia was the capital of the United States. 

Other must-see historical landmarks in Philly include the Museum of the American Revolution , Liberty Bells Center, the African American Museum, and the beloved Betsy Ross House. The latter is the picturesque house where Betsy crafted the first American flag, and you can wander through the small rooms and learn about her role in the American Independence. Family treasures include some original furniture, her eyeglasses, and her original Bible. 

Of course, not everything is history in Philadelphia. You can find other attractions, such as the Please-Touch Museum, Adventure Aquarium, Longwood Gardens, and the Drexel University Academy of Natural Sciences, all perfect for kids and families. The Franklin Institute, Sesame Place , and the Philadelphia Zoo are marvelous options for the little ones as well.

Many U.S. cities celebrate Pride with exciting parades, marches, festivals and more.

On June 28, 1969, in the New York City neighborhood of Greenwich Village, police raided a popular gay bar: the Stonewall Inn. Fed up with the frequent raids and harassment from law enforcement, both patrons and local residents began to fight back, leading to six days of protests and clashes between LGBTQ people and police.

The world-famous Stonewall built on years of LGBTQ activism. Similar homophobic and transphobic persecution by police had previously sparked other uprisings in the U.S., such as nearly three years earlier in San Francisco at Gene Compton's Cafeteria, or a decade before in Los Angeles' Cooper Do-nuts.

On the anniversary of Stonewall in 1970, activists held a march known as Christopher Street Liberation Day in New York to commemorate the uprising on that very street a year before. This parade drew thousands of marchers and prompted other cities to hold Pride events, which evolved into annual celebrations in June.

Recent years have seen an increase in violent assaults and state legislation threatening the rights and legal protections of LGBTQ communities across the U.S. With gay and trans rights under immediate threat, this year's Pride events are more than just celebrations – they're intended as acts of unity by LGBTQ community members and allies.

Here are the top destinations to champion and celebrate Pride nationwide in 2023.

New York City: June 25

Every year New York City throws one of the biggest Pride celebrations in the world. In 2019, the city was chosen to host WorldPride, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Stonewall and bringing an estimated 5 million people to New York to partake in its Pride events.

This year's NYC Pride theme is "Strength in Solidarity." The theme "highlights the cultural significance of the LGBTQIA community within the fabric of modern society, while acknowledging every individual's uniqueness and ability to wield tremendous power when united with others," according to NYC Pride.

Join revelers on the streets of Manhattan at the city's signature Pride March on June 25, then celebrate with the community at many other Pride events and experiences throughout the weekend. Attend Bliss Days, a celebration of queer women with live music and dancing; walk the streets of New York for the annual PrideFest street fair; take your youngster to Youth Pride; or dance at the yearly Pride Island music festival, which is headlined by singer Christina Aguilera this year.

Providence, Rhode Island: June 17

Providence is a city with a small-town vibe and a vibrant arts community. Its first Pride event was held in 1976 after a court ruling allowed the gay community to march through the city. About 75 people marched in that parade. Today that number has grown to 125,000-plus attendees to its annual PrideFest.

The 47th Annual Rhode Island PrideFest & Illuminated Night Parade will take place on June 17. During the day, you can enjoy more than 250 nonprofit vendors, live entertainment and plenty of food. This Providence festival is one of Rhode Island's biggest festivals with more than 100,000 attendees yearly.

The Rhode Island Pride Illuminated Night Parade is New England's only nighttime LGBTQ parade. Paradegoers can expect to see buildings and floats light up as participants make their way through downtown Providence after dusk.

Provincetown, Massachusetts: June 3

Located at the northern tip of Cape Cod , Provincetown is rich in history. This seaside town is the site where the Mayflower first landed in 1620 and serves as one of the oldest continuous art colonies in the U.S.

For more than half a century, the city has been hailed as an LGBTQ-friendly destination. Provincetown boasts plenty of gay bars, beaches and year-round Pride events to welcome LGBTQ travelers. One of the city's famed events is the annual Pride Rally – accompanied by the "Sashay" to Tea dance event – that takes place in the heart of town.

Looking for other ways to celebrate Pride around the area? Check out the Provincetown Business Guild's first annual Pride Festival. The free invite includes music, food and local vendors. Boston: June 10

Boston – or "Beantown," as it's affectionately nicknamed – is rich with U.S. history as well as LGBTQ history. In 1978, attorney John Ward established the GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders, formerly known as the Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD), in Boston. The city is also home to Wicked Queer, originally called the Boston LGBT Film Festival, which was founded in 1984; it's among the longest-running LGBTQ film festivals in North America.

This year's Pride celebration will take place on June 10 with a parade and festival. It's the first in-person celebration in four years and comes with a few changes. The city's Pride event will now be managed by Boston Pride For The People after the original Boston Pride organization was dissolved in 2021. The festivities are set to be nonstop with live entertainment, vendors and food.

There are plenty of activities going on in Boston throughout Pride Month as well. The Trans Resistance March & Festival will take place on June 3 and the Boston Dyke March will be held on June 9. The neighborhood of North Shore will host its Pride Parade & Festival on June 24.

Boston Urban Pride Weekend begins on June 29 with its Youth Pride Event, and festivities will continue on June 30 with the Mr. and Miss Gay Urban Pride Pageant along with Pitch Black, "the annual All Black Affair." A health summit and pool party will take place on July 1. The weekend concludes on July 2 with a music and arts festival and Detox "The Finale."

Located about 40 miles from Washington, D.C., Baltimore is considered one of the most LGBTQ-friendly cities in the U.S. Its historic Mount Vernon neighborhood was considered one the area's biggest gay havens before that sentiment expanded to other neighborhoods too. Queer filmmaker John Waters, known for movies such as "Hairspray" and "Pink Flamingos," is a Baltimore native. The city is also home to one of the oldest Pride events in the U.S.

Baltimore Pride has been running since 1975. This year's Pride theme is "One Heart, One Love, One Pride," in honor of "the contributions made to society by sexual and gender minorities." Hosted by the Pride Center of Maryland, several events will be held during the week of June 17 to 25.

Attend the 15th annual Twilight on the Terrace on June 16 to socialize at a gala and dance under the stars. On June 17, the neighborhood of Mount Vernon will mark Pride with music, food and vendors. History buffs may want to attend Ridin' The Rail: Baltimore Pride at the B&O Railroad Museum on June 23.

The main event of the week – the Baltimore Pride Parade – takes place on June 24. Continue your Pride revelry at the city's Block Party after the parade. The weeklong recognition ends with Pride in the Park on June 25. Enjoy live music featuring festival headliners rapper Remy Ma and R&B singer K. Michelle alongside food and drag performances.

Washington, D.C.: June 10

Washington, D.C., in many ways constitutes a living historical destination. The U.S. capital is the place where laws are made, presidents reside and museums sit at almost every turn. D.C. is also a destination filled with LGBTQ history. 

Founded in 1971 as the Gay Activists Alliance of Washington, D.C. – and later changing its name to the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance – GLAA is one of the oldest continuously active LGBTQ civil rights organizations in the U.S. Another historic milestone for LGBTQ activism, the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, was held on D.C.'s National Mall in 1979.

What started as a one-day block party in 1975 has grown into a massive celebration at the annual Capital Pride Parade and Pride Festival, with a turnout of more than 450,000 participants in 2022. "Peace, Love, Revolution" is the theme for this year's Capital Pride. The 1.5-mile parade will take attendees through the historic streets of Washington on June 10, honoring LGBTQ history and the evolution of queer communities. While the parade is ongoing, the Capital Pride Block Party will be having its daylong celebration.

The subsequent Capital Pride Festival and Concert, set for June 11, will provide partygoers with three stages for entertainment as well as food, beverages and 300-plus advocacy exhibitors. Headliners for this year's festival include singers Idina Menzel, Debbie Gibson and Shanice. While the festival and concert are free, there is an option to purchase VIP and PIT passes.

Looking for more to do? See fireworks at the fourth annual Pride on the Pier, which takes place at the Wharf in the southwest portion of the city on June 10. You can also chill out by the pool at the Pride Rooftop Pool Party on June 8 or at the Capital Trans Pride Pool Party on June 10 – or dance the night away and enjoy drag performances at RIOT!, the city's official opening Pride party on June 9.

Washington, D.C., has been chosen as the host city for WorldPride in 2025.

Norfolk, Virginia: June 24

Located about 50 miles from Williamsburg , Norfolk is the epicenter of the Hampton Roads region and a destination full of LGBTQ history.

In 1976, there was a raid at a nightspot known as the Pantry. Its manager and 11 clubgoers were arrested on numerous charges including lewd conduct. Those defendants became known as the "Pantry 12" after fighting and successfully having their charges dismissed. The following year in 1977, a massive protest broke out at Norfolk's Scope Arena, where singer Anita Bryant was performing. Bryant was under fire after launching a "Save Our Children" campaign in response to a gay rights ordinance in Dade County, Florida, which granted LGBTQ people housing and employment protections.

The first community Pride event in the Hampton Roads area was a potluck picnic in June 1986 held by the Mandamus Society. The group, which would later be known as the Hampton Roads Pride, has been hosting annual summertime Pride events since 1997.

This year's Pride theme is "Break Free 23." The celebration will expand its focus beyond the Norfolk area to also collaborate with the six other Hampton Roads cities such as Virginia Beach and Newport News, as well as beyond the Tidewater area to ensure LGBTQ voices are breaking free to be heard.

In the historic Norfolk neighborhood of Ghent, the district will be hosting a Ghent Pride Party at the Palace Shops on June 20. Partygoers can enjoy food and cocktails from local restaurants, a silent auction, and live music.

Running since 2011, the city's Pride Boat Parade takes place on June 24 along with the city's PrideFest. See boats decked out in Pride decor sail along the Elizabeth River at Town Point Park. PrideFest, taking place at the same park, is Norfolk's biggest one-day festival and will be full of food, live entertainment and family-friendly activities.

Athens, Georgia: June 3

Located about 70 miles away from Atlanta , Athens is known for several LGBTQ milestones.

It was here that the B-52s got their start. Another rock band also came from Athens – R.E.M. Both bands feature queer members. Additionally, in 1971, University of Georgia students created the Committee on Gay Education, which later evolved into the Lambda Alliance – an officially recognized student organization.

In 1989, the Boybutante AIDS Foundation was created to provide support to those living with HIV and AIDS and to the community. The foundation runs a yearly Boybutante Ball. Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual Employees Supporters (GLOBES) was created as a support group for staff at the University of Georgia in 1994. The organization would later set the framework for other LGBTQ events with the creation of its yearly potluck picnic. Fast forward to 2022, when the city held its first Pride parade.

Put on by the Athens Pride & Queer Collective, the 2023 Athens Pride Parade will take place on June 3. See floats and LGBTQ groups make their way through downtown Athens as they celebrate queer communities. Then, attend the post-parade festival to enjoy live entertainment, nonprofit vendors and food.

Paducah, Kentucky: June 3

Paducah, Kentucky, is situated between the Tennessee and Ohio Rivers and is the halfway point between St. Louis, Missouri , and Nashville, Tennessee . In recent years, the designated UNESCO Creative City has made headway in establishing a more supportive environment for LGBTQ communities.

In 2018, Paducah became the first western Kentucky city to pass an anti-discrimination ordinance. The city is also home to the Cinema Systers Film Festival, which is the only all-lesbian film festival in the U.S. In 2022, Paducah held its first Pridefest. Almost 2,000 people were in attendance for the inaugural event.

The second annual Paducah Pridefest will be held on June 3. According to the organizers, expect bigger and better this year. Former "American Idol" contestant Noah Davis will be the music headliner. Festivalgoers can also enjoy performances by drag artists Roxxxy Andrews and Heidi N Closet, both of "RuPaul's Drag Race" fame, as well as Landon Cider from "The Boulet Brothers' Dragula." The fest will also have live music from local entertainers, food and vendors. Paducah Pridefest does request a suggested donation for entry to the festival.

Columbus, Ohio: June 17

Ohio's capital and biggest city is one of the fastest-growing and most LGBTQ-friendly cities in the country. As such, Columbus holds the second-largest Pride march in the Midwest. Second only to Chicago Pride in the region, Columbus welcomes over 750,000 spectators to its Pride festival and march.

With the "Purpose. Passion. Power." theme, this year's Pride intends to remember how the Stonewall uprisings set the framework for Pride and represents the purpose of Pride protests. The theme also encompasses the passion in LGBTQ communities to make strides forward and the power people have to effect change no matter the circumstance.

The Stonewall Columbus Pride March takes place on June 17. Last year's march drew more than 17,000 participants to the streets of city. If you're looking for a good view of the march, revelers can watch the event from one of the three eateries that make up Pride on High. Proceeds from Pride march viewing areas go to local LGBTQ charities. The Stonewall Columbus Pride Festival, set to be held on June 16 and 17, will feature more than 200 vendors, two performance stages, a wellness area and a dance area.

Detroit: June 11

Pride events were established to celebrate – but also to fight for LGBTQ rights. The state of Michigan made headlines in March 2023, when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed into law an amendment to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. With this legislation, LGBTQ Michigan residents will now be explicitly protected from discrimination on the basis of sex and gender identity.

Like many cities after Stonewall, Detroit had an uprising of its own. The Motor City's first Pride march was held in 1972. The march has gone through its own evolution since then and expanded to include a PrideFest celebration. In 2003, the festival was given its current name: Motor City Pride. The celebration has more than 50,000 participants yearly.

The Motor City Pride Festival takes place on June 10 and 11 and will include live music, drag performances and food trucks. There is a $5 entrance fee to attend the celebration; children younger than 12 get in free. The Motor City Pride Parade is slated for June 11 and is free for all to attend.

Looking for more to do in Detroit for Pride? Take the Detroit Historic Pride walking tour with Detroit History Tours. Guests will learn more about LGBTQ history in the city. The tour company offers this excursion for a few days throughout June.

The Ruth Ellis Center – a social services agency for LGBTQ youth named after the activist who lived to be one of the oldest openly gay Black women in the world – is holding a Catfight for the Crown event on June 2.

Chicago: June 25

With stunning architecture, vibrant nightlife and plenty of places to grab a bite, Chicago is a traveler favorite year-round – and yet another destination full of LGBTQ history and culture.

The Windy City is where the first gay rights organization in the U.S. was established: The Society of Human Rights was founded by Henry Gerber in 1924. His former home, the Henry Gerber House, has become the second National Historic Landmark designated for its association with LGBTQ history – Stonewall was the first. Chicago is fittingly home to the biggest Pride parade in the Midwest, which will occur on June 25 this year.

The parade on average sees more than 1 million spectators in attendance; it runs through the Boystown neighborhood, which in 1997 Chicago declared the "official gay village." Expect to see colorful floats, decorated vehicles and marching bands celebrating Pride.

You'll also find several other events taking place around the city during Pride Month. The weekend before the parade (June 17 to 18), for example, brings the lively Chicago Pride Fest. About 60,000 festivalgoers attend the event each year for music, food, drag shows and arts and craft vendors. There is a suggested donation at the gate to enjoy the festivities. You can also take in the energetic atmosphere at Pride in the Park, the annual outdoor music festival that will be held at Grant Park on June 23 and 24. Enjoy performances from music artists such as Zedd, Years & Years and Zara Larsson at the 2023 event.

Also happening on June 24 is Navy Pier Pride, which will feature family-friendly activities, food, educational programming and music. Those who love staying active can sign up for the 40th Annual Pride Race 5K and 10K on June 25.

Minneapolis and St. Paul: June 25

The Minneapolis – St. Paul metropolitan region has its own share of LGBTQ history. In 1975, Minneapolis became the first U.S. city to pass a nondiscrimination ordinance; since then, the area has cultivated a reputation as one of the friendliest cities for LGBTQ people in the country – and even earned the distinction of being one of the "gayest" U.S. cities. The Twin Cities' massive Pride parade is one of the biggest in the Midwest and nationwide. 

Twin Cities Pride held its first parade in 1972. The march this year starts on Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis and ends in Loring Park on June 25. Afterward, the festivities continue at the Twin Cities Pride Festival, which starts on June 23 and features music performances, a variety of food and drink, and LGBTQ vendors.

Several family-friendly events are happening during Pride Month in the Twin Cities area, including the Minnesota School Outreach Coalition's Youth Pride on June 3, the St. Paul Pride Festival on June 10 and Pride Family Fun Day on June 18. These events will include live entertainment, activities and food.

New Orleans: June 10

New Orleans is a year-round LGBTQ-friendly destination where art, culture, food, music and history collide. The city is home to Café Lafitte in Exile, one of the oldest gay bars in the U.S., and Fat Monday Luncheon, one of Louisiana's oldest organized LGBTQ events. Visitors will find plenty of things to do in the "Crescent City" for Pride Month – or at any other time of year.

Before the Pride parade commences, spend the day at New Orleans PrideFest, a block party where guests can partake in food and entertainment. Travelers may like that the NOLA Pride Parade is not a daytime celebration but rather one at night, taking you through the Marigny and French Quarter neighborhoods. See extravagant floats, dance troupes and musical ensembles parading the streets – not to mention all the rainbow flags.

Looking for other Pride events in NOLA? The French Market District will be having "A Picnic for All Y'all!" on June 3. The theme for this year's event is "Drag Brunch." Enjoy live drag performances, music and food. The 2023 LGBTLOL Queer Comedy Fest takes place June 1 to 4. Catch a laugh at one of the New Orleans comedy venues. Patrons can purchase full-fest passes or single-show tickets. You can also attend one of the many events during New Orleans Black Pride Weekend from June 8 to 11.

Houston: June 24

Houston's nicknames reflect many aspects of the city's history. Whether you know it as the "Bayou City" for its multiple rivers, "Space City" for its role in space exploration, or just simply "H-Town" for its culture and entertainment, Houston has it all for travelers. Bigger is better in the Lone Star State, and Pride events are no exception. Houston Pride is one of the biggest Pride celebrations in both Texas and the U.S.

Last year, around 850,000 spectators attended the Houston Pride Parade. The 2023 parade takes place at night on June 24 around the downtown area by the city hall. Enjoy tricked-out vehicles and floats, with flags in rainbow and various other color combinations to represent different LGBTQ communities.

Pride Houston 365 has made some changes to this year's Pride activities. The annual festival, which usually takes place before the parade, will not be held this year. "We have elected to have a Celebration Parade only this season. There are a lot of factors at play. Pride Houston is dedicated to renewing the trust of the Houston LGBTQIA+ community," the organization said in a statement posted to Instagram in January.

Instead of the festival, a Pride Market will take its place on June 4. There will be live music, food and drinks, a beer garden, and vendors. Looking for more to do outside of the parade and market? See the latest fashion styles at the official Pride fashion show, Rock the Runway, on June 22. Then, dance the night away at the Eden 2023: Official Pride Girl+ Party on June 23 or the Rich's at Rise after-party on June 24.

San Antonio: June 24

San Antonio's LGBTQ history has evolved over the years, from the drag performances of the 1930s to the city's Pride march becoming a jampacked monthlong celebration of the LGBTQ community.

This year's Pride theme is "Just Say Gay." The festivities are set to take place on June 24. By day, enjoy live entertainment, a PRIDE wedding, a health fair and food at the Pride Bigger Than Texas Festival. Admission is $12 for ages 12 and older; after June 15, the cost increases to $15. Pets are allowed at the festival but must be leashed for the duration of attendance. At night, cool down while watching participants in Pride Bigger Than Texas Parade. The parade is free to attend.

There are plenty of other ways to celebrate Pride in San Antonio . June 10 is the Bud Light Pride River Parade & Celebration. The event was created by Visit San Antonio as a way to promote the city that embraces LGBTQ communities. Enjoy a day of live performances at the Bud Light Pride Celebration & Stage Entertainment before attending the parade. The march runs twice: once in the Downtown portion of the River Walk, then again on the side of the River Walk Museum.

The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be honoring Pride with two performances. On June 15, see the show "Pride Anthems," which details the fight for LGBTQ equality through music from artists such as Donna Summer, George Michael, Madonna and Lady Gaga – to name a few. On June 28, the center will host "An Evening with George Takei." The actor and activist will be discussing his acting career, his childhood in Japanese American internment camps and his activism for LGBTQ rights.

The San Antonio Zoo will be holding its third annual Night Out at the Zoo on June 16. The zoo has family-friendly activities for all ages as it celebrates Pride.

Santa Fe, New Mexico: June 24

"This is where seasoned gays come to center themselves, but not in a boring way," said the LGBTQ magazine The Advocate in 2011 when Santa Fe was deemed the second gayest city in the U.S. The UNESCO Creative City is the oldest capital in the U.S. and has one of the largest art markets in the country as well. With a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, Santa Fe remains a popular LGBTQ destination.

This year, the city celebrates the 30th anniversary of Pride as well as its parent organization, the Santa Fe Human Rights Alliance. Pride festivities begin on June 3 with the Disco Inferno party, where revelers can dance the night away in their best disco or retro outfits. History buffs will enjoy the Pride30 Santa Fe LGBTQ History Walking Tour on June 10, where you can learn about the queer history of Santa Fe. Afterward, hop on The Pride Train for a night of celebration. If you're looking for fun for all ages, Meow Wolf and the Human Rights Alliance will be hosting Planet Taz: A Queer Prom on June 14.

Fast forward to June 24, as Santa Fe celebrates Pride30 with its annual Pride Drive Parade and Pride on the Plaza. See cars, trucks, motorcycles and floats as they make their way around its parade route. Afterward, enjoy live music as paradegoers dance the afternoon away at Pride on the Plaza. If you want to keep the celebration going, attend the Diversity Rocks the Block party or see a drag revue at Pride After Dark. Festivities wrap up on June 25 at the After Burn T-dance party.

Denver: June 25

When you think of Denver , what probably springs to mind is the nearby Rocky Mountain National Park or the urban atmosphere of the city with its numerous breweries and museums. But Denver also has an energetic LGBTQ scene with multiple gay-friendly bars, hotels and Pride events.

The annual Denver PrideFest weekend is the largest Pride event in the Rocky Mountain region, typically drawing more than 525,000 participants to its festivities. The 2023 PrideFest will feature drag performances from Marcia Marcia Marcia and Salina EsTitties, both featured on "RuPaul's Drag Race," in addition to New Orleans rapper Big Freedia. The Coors Light Denver Pride Parade takes place later in the day on June 25 and allows visitors to enjoy marchers, dancers and floats down Colfax Avenue, the longest commercial street in the U.S.

The city has numerous other events to help you celebrate Pride amid its two-day festival. Meow Wolf will be hosting several events including "We Are Here. The Drag Guide to Pride" on June 15 and 16 and "The Storybook KiKi Ball" celebrating the vogue dance movement on June 17. Want to take your celebration outdoors? Hit Coors Field for the Colorado Rockies' Coors Light Pride Night on June 9 or run the Denver Pride 5K to raise money for LGBTQ programming at The Center on Colfax on June 24.

Los Angeles: June 11

Los Angeles is home to one of the largest populations of LGBTQ people in the U.S., and the city has played a huge role in gay rights history. One of the first lesbian publications, Vice Versa, was published in the late 1940s in Los Angeles . The first Supreme Court case that dealt with homosexuality and First Amendment rights – One Inc. v. Olesen in 1958 – centered on the Los Angeles government's attempt to censor a gay magazine. LA was also at the epicenter of one of the earliest organized LGBTQ protests after the police raid at The Black Cat Tavern in the Silver Lake neighborhood. It's only fitting that the city holds one of the largest Pride parades in the country.

Start the festivities at LA Pride in the Park, held in the 32-acre Los Angeles State Park from June 9 to 10. You can see performances by rapper Megan Thee Stallion and singer Mariah Carey. The festival will also have food, cocktails, vendors and LGBTQ exhibitors. On June 11, become a paradegoer at the annual LA Pride Parade. Marvel at floats, twirlers and performers as they make their way down the parade route.

Adrenaline-seekers can relish Pride with other attendees at Universal Studios Hollywood during the "Pride Is Universal" after-hours event on June 8. Enjoy rides and attractions around the park in addition to live entertainment and food.

San Francisco: June 25

In the 1960s Life magazine deemed San Francisco the "gay capital" of the U.S. because of its emerging LGBTQ communities. The city's Castro neighborhood was one of the earlier "gayborhoods" in the U.S. and was home to Harvey Milk, who in 1977 was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors as the first openly gay elected official in California history. Decades later, the city remains one of the most LGBTQ-friendly destinations.

The San Francisco Pride festivities include one of the biggest Pride parades in the country, with about 500,000 people in attendance. Expect to see LGBTQ community members and allies make their way down the parade route on June 25. The parade is set to have numerous groups and exhibitors participating, and the accompanying two-day Pride celebration (June 24 to 25) will feature multiple stages and venues to enjoy live music and entertainment.

Also happening this same weekend will be the 31st San Francisco Dyke March on June 24 and Soul of Pride San Francisco Black Pride taking place on both weekend days.

Seattle: June 25

No list of Pride celebrations would be complete without Seattle , another one of the most gay-friendly cities in the country. Located east of downtown Seattle is Capitol Hill, considered the epicenter of the city's LGBTQ scene. The neighborhood boasts a lively nightlife with numerous gay bars and nightclubs – as well as rainbow-painted crosswalks to help you celebrate Pride year-round alongside the many events in the "Emerald City."

The celebration starts on June 3 with Seattle Pride in the Park. Enjoy family-friendly activities, food trucks and dance stages. The city's main Pride event – the Seattle Pride Parade – is set for June 25 and considered the largest march in the state of Washington. The parade typically brings up to 300,000 participants and spectators. With its 2023 theme of "Galactic Love," the parade will march down Fourth Avenue in the downtown area.

The celebrations continue at PrideFest, a weekend festival held in Capitol Hill on June 24 and at the Seattle Center the next day. Both locations provide beer gardens, food and activities for the family to enjoy.

Study ranks Chicago as most walkable city in America for tourists

With summer on the way and tourism ramping up in Chicago, a recent study shows that there is plenty of reason behind the appeal of traveling to the Windy City.

The study, conducted by Preply , analyzed major U.S. cities and measured how easy it was to navigate each city's most recognizable tourist landmarks on foot.

Compared to European cities that are known for being walkable, the expansive and car-dependent nature of many American cities makes it much more difficult to see what a city has to offer without a vehicle.

The study found that Chicago is the most walkable city for tourists in the U.S. by this metric, with it taking just 28 minutes to explore the city's most famous landmarks, including "The Bean" or "Cloud Gate" and the Magnificent Mile.

The brisk pace in Chicago is miles ahead of Orlando, which the study ranked as the least walkable city for American tourists.

According to Preply, it takes over 11 hours and 65,100 steps to cover Orlando's major landmarks on foot.

The only other cities where major landmarks can be seen within an hour on foot were Nashville and Dallas, taking 33 minutes and 41 minutes, respectively.

Rounding out the top five were Santa Fe and New Orleans, each requiring between 6,000 and 7,000 steps and less than an hour and 15 minutes to see the major attractions.

In addition to The Bean and the Magnificent Mile, Preply included Millennium Park itself, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Architecture Center as the spots that could be seen within 28 minutes of walking.

Outside of Chicago, Milwaukee was the lone U.S. city to crack the top 15, coming in at 15th at 2 hours and 35 minutes of walking and 14,280 steps.

“The 77” video campaign is one way Choose Chicago is encouraging inclusive community tourism. And it’s a tasty one.

Chicago is home to many iconic local eateries. At La Catedral Cafe & Restaurant, you can choose from up to 14 kinds of chilaquiles. At Old Fashioned Donuts, you can order fresh donuts from a man with over 50 years of experience making them by hand.

Choose Chicago, the city’s tourism bureau, invites you to dig into Chicago’s historic and culture-packed neighborhoods with its new web series, “ The 77: A City of Neighborhoods .”

Funded by an American Rescue Plan grant , the video campaign — posted on YouTube and Choose Chicago’s website — highlights five sets of neighborhoods across the city’s 77 community areas .

Mark Skala is the creative director and founder at Skalawag Productions, the production company behind the campaign. Skala said most episodes follow a similar trajectory: opening with a longstanding food establishment, transitioning to the neighborhood’s history and culture, and then ending with a small business “pioneer.”

Skift learned more about the campaign and its progress since the premiere earlier this month.

Gathering around the dinner table

Cinematic shots of food and cocktails greet viewers in each episode. Chicago is a foodie’s paradise, and the campaign’s creators embraced that.

“Food is the hook that gets people interested,” said Rob Fojtik, Choose Chicago’s neighborhood strategy vice president and the show’s host and executive producer.

As Skala puts it, the show gets you to salivate. Skalawag Productions specifically focuses on food and beverage videography, which set them apart when Choose Chicago solicited campaign pitches.

The series hopes to demonstrate the culture and history of the city’s neighborhoods, but food is an easy way to draw in an audience.

“You can learn about history, but, if there’s no place to go to get lunch or dinner or a cocktail, your trip is going to be less fun,” Fojtik said. 

Narrowing down the neighborhoods

Choose Chicago could only showcase a handful of neighborhoods in the series launch. There were two deciding factors when whittling down which communities would be featured.

Partnerships with chambers of commerce and community development corporations establish trust with neighborhoods. This can get Choose Chicago into the door of that mom-and-pop shop, filming for up to 12 hours a day.

But, beyond the logistics, the chosen neighborhoods play a role in Chicago’s growth.

“Each of these five communities has a distinct cultural character, a distinct history, and something that also speaks to the larger Chicago story,” Fojtik said.

The series intends to challenge a narrative. As the show explains, segregation in Chicago led to inequality, socioeconomic diversity, and isolation of communities. While still contributing to pressing challenges across the city, Chicago’s history shouldn’t be ignored.

“Things that cause us to have lots of problems actually are also the same things that give us so many wonderful, rich experiences you can only get in Chicago,” Fojtik said.

Spreading the word

Choose Chicago posted the episodes online, but the group is also hosting community screenings around the city. Viewers can enjoy the same bites as seen on the big screen. 

Fojtik said Choose Chicago also started a paid ad campaign to get more eyes on the show. 

Through its promotional efforts, Choose Chicago targets a range of audiences, starting with Chicago residents themselves.

“We can hop on the CTA, or cars or a bike or whatever, and get to other communities pretty easily,” Fojtik told Skift. Choose Chicago also considers the regional and national levels with its campaigns, hoping to identify affinity groups and niches that would enjoy these travel experiences. More broadly, Fojtik emphasized the prominence of the “cultural explorer,” or a tourist interested in getting to know all aspects of a city. 

Empowering communities

Beyond showing travelers other corners of Chicago, neighborhood campaigns have the potential to empower communities themselves.

Mike Moreno runs Osito’s Tap, a featured Little Village bar with a Bohemian history and a Latin twist. While Osito’s has already been in the press, Moreno said there’s been such an uptick in customers that he needs to hire more staff.

“My bar has been slammed for the last couple of weeks, which is amazing,” Moreno said. “(The series) brings attention to a neighborhood that I love so much that a lot of people aren’t familiar with.”

Fojtik sees the series as a chance for communities to speak out for themselves.

“These were opportunities to really amplify and highlight those community voices and perspectives,” Fojtik said. “I think it gave a lot of folks who participated in it an opportunity to have their voices heard.”

Politics | Gaza protests threaten to upend Democratic convention in Chicago amid growing criticism of Biden

The pro-Palestinian protests roiling Columbia University and college campuses nationwide have political pundits asking whether widespread demonstrations could ruin the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this summer, just as they did two generations ago in 1968.

Hundreds of Columbia students this month erected a tent city encampment to protest Israel’s war in Gaza, spurring the university administration to call in police to clear the Manhattan campus and make scores of arrests.

Like in the ’60s, when police crackdowns emboldened youthful anti-war protesters , the NYPD action failed to quell the Gaza protests. The student demonstrators returned in force hours later and have vowed not to back down .

Gaza protests have spread like wildfire on college campuses in recent days, with thousands of students calling for the U.S. to end its support for Israel and demanding their institutions cut ties with companies that do business in the Jewish state.

The growing movement poses a political threat to President Biden, who has for the most part strongly backed the U.S. ally. and recently approved billions in additional military aid. Polls show especially younger voters disapprove of his handling of the conflict.

With Biden locked in a tight reelection fight, images of chaos on the streets of the liberal city when Democrats gather to nominate him for a second term threaten to turn off moderate and independent suburban voters who will likely decide the election.

It could also short-circuit Biden’s effort to launch his campaign in earnest by showing off a unified and determined Democratic Party.

“Chicago ’24 could be a powder keg,” said Matt Mackowiak, a Republican strategist. “The Democrats have a massive risk of letting activists define the event and scare swing voters.”

But Democratic strategist Basil Smikle believes the specter of former President Donald Trump’s effort to get back to the White House will be a powerful unifying incentive for Democratic voters even in the face of divisive anti-Israel protests.

“It’s safe to assume, as in years past, that there will be some kind of protest at or near the convention,” said Smikle, a Hunter College political science professor. “But I don’t feel it will detract from the larger message and mission, which is to beat Donald Trump.”

“The Biden agenda will prove more appealing, and the Trump agenda too extreme, to opt out of this election,” Smikle added.

The fact that anyone is even bringing up comparisons to the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago has to be troubling for the Biden campaign and Democrats.

The 1968 gathering came as Democrats were wrestling with the divisive Vietnam War. The civil rights movement was also spreading across the nation and riots erupted in major cities after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of that year.

Vice President Hubert Humphrey, a supporter of the Vietnam War, locked up the Democratic nomination with the support of party bosses even though he didn’t participate in primary elections. The nomination contest was thrown into chaos when his main rival, Robert F. Kennedy, was also felled by an assassin’s bullet.

The Chicago convention itself was deeply split between pro- and anti-war delegates. On the muggy streets outside, huge and angry crowds of protesters gathered to demand an end to the war and justice for Black Americans.

The raging bloody battles turned into an iconic image of American division , especially between the long-haired leftist protesters and the nearly all-white phalanxes of baton-wielding Chicago cops.

Republican Richard Nixon successfully used the Chicago chaos convention to portray Democrats as unable to control their own supporters . Months later, he edged Humphrey to win the White House.

GOP strategist Scott Jennings predicted Biden would be put in a similar political vise when Palestinian supporters run amok and force Democratic authorities to crack down.

“And I think Biden will try to ‘fine people on both sides’ it,” Jennings said, referring to Trump’s damaging effort to downplay the 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The 2024 Democratic convention is only the second time since then that Democrats have brought their signature event back to the Windy City.

It’s a decision that raised eyebrows from the beginning, albeit mostly because party nomination conventions have recently been held in battleground states to maximize a possible bounce among local voters.

After Chicago was picked in spring 2023, Hamas terrorists launched a brutal attack on Israel on Oct. 7 that killed more than 1,000. Israel responded with an invasion of the Gaza strip that has continued ever since, so far killing more than 30,000 Palestinians , mostly innocent civilians.

As the Israeli operation has dragged on, pro-Palestinian demonstrations erupted at Columbia , a hotbed for protests in 1968. The demonstrations have grown bigger and spread to dozens of campuses across the nation, just as they did in the 1960s.

Still, comparisons to 1968 seem far fetched, at least so far.

There have been clashes between police and protesters at Columbia and elsewhere, but not anything close to the scale or intensity of the 1968 tumult.

Perhaps more significantly, the Gaza protests don’t seem to reflect deeper divisions in American society as did civil rights and Vietnam.

Democratic strategist Tom Watson predicted anti-Israel protests won’t threaten wider Democratic determination to beat Trump.

He scoffed at any comparison with the turbulent ’60’s when American soldiers were dying daily in Vietnam and cities were on fire.

“The only thing similar to 1968 is that the (Rolling) Stones are still on tour,” Watson said.

Hostage with Chicago ties, taken at music festival, seen alive in video update released by Hamas

New images have been released of an American taken hostage by Hamas.

Hamas released video of 23-year-old Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who has Chicago ties.

His hand was blown off as he was abducted from a music festival near Gaza on Oct. 7.

His parents spoke with ABC 7 New York Eyewitness News reporter Josh Einiger on his most recent trip to Israel .

"And I often wonder what does he know, I don't think that he knows very much," his mother Rachel Goldberg-Polin said. "What we want to do is lay on the floor in a ball weeping, but that won't save him, and it won't save any of them. And we have no choice and so we run, we run to the end of the Earth."

"Hersh, and the other 132, know that we are coming," his father Jon Goldberg-Polin said.

Goldberg previously described her son like a lot of other young people.

He wants to see the world and has plans to go to university.

Witnesses said Goldberg-Polin lost part of an arm when the attackers tossed grenades into a temporary shelter where people had taken refuge, but he tied a tourniquet around it and walked out of the shelter before being bundled into the truck.

Family and friends have organized the "Bring Hersh Home" campaign on social media.

Hersh's aunt still lives in Chicago.

There are four other American hostages still believed to be alive.

So, the Eagles, Chiefs and Ravens drafted well again.

What else is new?

Actually, a lot is new with the 2024 NFL Draft.

A team that only made five picks and used one on a punter aced the draft. A couple teams usually found at the bottom of the draft rankings and the season standings came away with impressive hauls.

And the Rams — who usually are an afterthought during the first round of the draft — set an early tone for a strong class.

Here are The Post’s immediate 2024 NFL Draft grades for all 32 teams, with a curve instituted for the first-, second- and third-round picks, and an emphasis on quality and value:

Key Picks: Caleb Williams (QB, USC) , Rome Odunze (WR, Washington), Kiran Amegadjie (OT, Yale), Tory Taylor (P, Iowa)

Analysis: Who needs quantity when you have quality? Odunze, Keenan Allen and D.J. Moore might be the NFL’s best receiver trio. And the off-script play-making, eccentric Williams should — should! — be the franchise quarterback the Bears have sought for 75 years.

2. Cardinals

Key Picks: Marvin Harrison Jr. (WR, Ohio State) , Darius Robinson (EDGE, Missouri), Max Melton (CB, Rutgers), Trey Benson (RB, Florida State), Isaiah Adams (G, Illinois), Tip Reiman (TE, Illinois), Elijah Jones (CB, Boston College)

Analysis: The first team to make seven of the first 90 picks since the Cowboys in their transformative 1991 class. Harrison was the consensus best non-quarterback prospect in the class. Robinson and the late-riser Melton should compete for immediate starting jobs.

3. Steelers

Key Picks: Troy Fautanu (OL, Washington), Zach Frazier (C, West Virginia), Roman Wilson (WR, Michigan), Payton Wilson (LB, North Carolina State), Mason McCormick (G, South Dakota State)

Analysis: For the first time since 1976, the Steelers used three of their first five picks on the offensive line to protect sack-prone QB Russell Wilson. Both Wilsons in their draft class went later than expected. Payton Wilson was voted the nation’s defensive player of the year.

4. Commanders

Key Picks: Jayden Daniels (QB, LSU) , Jer’Zhan Newton (DT, Illinois), Mike Sainristil (CB, Michigan), Ben Sinnott (TE, Kansas State), Luke McCaffrey (WR, Rice), Brandon Coleman (G, TCU)

Analysis: The Commanders chose the Heisman-winning Daniels over Drake Maye at No. 2 overall. A failed effort to trade up for a first-rounder worked out: Newton is a first-round talent and Sainristil (only 5-foot-9) and Sinnott (fullback versatile) were two of many analysts’ favorite players.

Key Picks: Quinyon Mitchell (CB, Toledo), Cooper DeJean (CB, Iowa), Jalyx Hunt (EDGE, Texas Christian), Will Shipley (RB, Clemson), Jeremiah Trotter Jr. (LB, Clemson)

Analysis: This is called attacking a weakness. DeJean could’ve been the Eagles’ pick at No. 22. Instead, Mitchell — the first cornerback selected — slipped to No. 22 and the Eagles doubled down. DeJean and Shipley are both electric returners. Trotter’s father was an Eagles great.

Key Picks: Xavier Worthy (WR, Texas) , Kingsley Suamataia (OT, BYU), Jaden Hicks (S, Washington State)

Analysis: Worthy, the fastest player in NFL combine history, will be catching deep balls from Patrick Mahomes in short order. Suamataia was a polarizing prospect for scouts. There was chatter about Hicks going in the top 60 — and he fell to No. 133.

Key Picks: Nate Wiggins (CB, Clemson), Adisa Isaac (EDGE, Penn State), Roger Rosengarten (OT, Washington), T.J. Tampa (CB, Iowa State)

Analysis: Tampa fits the Baltimore Way — physicality and toughness — more than Wiggins. But Wiggins is a ballhawk who vowed to be the best cornerback in the first round after slipping to No. 30. Rosengarten helps after three-fifths of last year’s starting offensive line departed.

Key Picks: Jared Verse (DE, Florida State) , Braden Fiske (DT, Florida State), Blake Corum (RB, Michigan), Kamren Kinchens (S, Miami)

Analysis: In the post-Aaron Donald world, the Rams must’ve spent a lot of time on Florida State tape. Verse — the Rams’ first first-round pick since 2016 — is an explosive pass rusher. Fiske put on an athletic display at the NFL combine. It’s a high-energy combination.

Key Picks: Taliese Fuaga (OT, Oregon State), Kool-Aid McKinstry (CB, Alabama), Spencer Rattler (QB, South Carolina)

Analysis: Maybe no team had a bigger need than the Saints had at offensive tackle. The nasty Fuaga steps right in. McKinstry slipped because of a Jones fracture in his foot but was a preseason top-12 draft talent. Rattler was the first post-first-round QB (at No. 150 overall).

10. Vikings

Key Picks: J.J. McCarthy (QB, Michigan) , Dallas Turner (EDGE, Alabama)

Analysis: GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s trade offer to get up to No. 3 was rejected. He played it patiently for McCarthy — who steps into a great offensive situation — at No. 10 and traded up for maybe the draft’s best defensive player at No. 17. The lack of Day 2 picks hurts.

11. Chargers

Key Picks: Joe Alt (OT, Notre Dame), Ladd McConkey (WR, Georgia), Junior Colson (LB, Michigan), Tarheeb Still (CB, Maryland)

Analysis: Thought Jim Harbaugh was going to load up on Michigan men? Well, he also loaded up on Michigan opponents. It’s a surprise that the Chargers didn’t trade down in the first round. Who is catching Justin Herbert’s passes without Keenan Allen and Mike Williams?

Key Picks: Olu Fashanu (OT, Penn State, Malachi Corley (WR, Western Kentucky), Braelon Allen (RB, Wisconsin), Jordan Travis (QB, Florida State)

Analysis: Protection for Aaron Rodgers, playmaker for Aaron Rodgers. Why not? Fashanu is much-needed insurance after the Jets used 16 offensive linemen last season. Corley, a yards-after-catch machine, could be a Deebo Samuel light. They added a 2025 third-rounder but dealt starting DL John Franklin-Myers.

13. Packers

Key Picks: Jordan Morgan (OL, Arizona), Edgerrin Cooper (LB, Texas A&M), Javon Bullard (S, Georgia), Marshawn Lloyd (RB, USC), Ty’Ron Hopper (LB, Missouri)

Analysis: The Packers rarely address offense in the first round, but Morgan still felt like a reach given concerns about his ability to handle power. Taking the first player at a position — as Cooper was — usually is a good idea.

Key Picks: Terrion Arnold (CB, Alabama), Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (CB, Missouri), Sione Vaki (RB/S, Utah)

Analysis: One year after acing their draft with unconventional picks, the Lions focused on higher-value positions, including a trade up to steal Arnold, who was pushed down by the 14 straight offensive players at the start. Can Vaki continue playing two ways in the NFL?

15. Raiders

Key Picks: Brock Bowers (TE, Georgia), Jackson Powers-Johnson (C, Oregon), Delmar Glaze (OT, Maryland)

Analysis: It’s regrettable that the Raiders didn’t get one of the top six quarterbacks by staying at No. 13. The mistake is somewhat lessened by landing Bowers — positional value is overrated when it comes to potential greatness — and a potential long-term answer at center.

Key Picks: Laiatu Latu (EDGE, UCLA) , Adonai Mitchell (WR, Texas), Matt Goncalves (OT, Pittsburgh)

Analysis: GM Chris Ballard’s rant trashing anonymous sources knocking players was good TV. But can he explain why Mitchell slipped to No. 52 if those assessments about his attitude were wrong? Latu had 23.5 sacks in 25 games after a brief medical retirement (neck) that has to be a concern.

17. Patriots

Key Picks: Drake Maye (QB, North Carolina), Ja’Lynn Polk (WR, Washington), Caedan Wallace (OT, Penn State), Javon Baker (WR, UCF)

Analysis: With a solid defense in place for new defensive-minded head coach Jerod Mayo, the Patriots used their first five picks on offense, following the rookie QB blueprint with pass catchers and blockers. Maye needs some mechanical refining but has a high ceiling.

Key Picks: Malik Nabers (WR, LSU) , Tyler Nubin (S, Minnesota), Andru Phillips (CB, Kentucky), Theo Johnson (TE, Penn State)

Analysis: The five-year-long search for a game-breaking receiver is over. But Nabers comes at the cost of securing a new franchise quarterback after the Giants failed to trade into the top three. Both Nubin (13 career interceptions) and Phillips could be Week 1 starters. Johnson is a projection after minimal stats.

19. Bengals

Key Picks: Amarius Mims (OT, Georgia), Kris Jenkins (DT, Michigan), Jermaine Burton (WR, Alabama), McKinnley Jackson (DT, Texas A&M)

Analysis: Mims (seven career starts) and Jenkins (29 consecutive starts) are on opposite ends of the spectrum. The Bengals can allow Mims to develop behind Trent Brown while their other high picks contribute right away. Burton adds vertical speed to a dynamic passing attack.

20. Cowboys

Key Picks: Tyler Guyton (OT, Oklahoma), Marshawn Kneeland (EDGE, Western Kentucky), Marist Liufau (LB, Notre Dame), Cooper Beebe (G, Kansas State)

Analysis: Trading down from No. 24 to No. 29 might have cost the Cowboys’ their preferred pick. Then owner Jerry Jones accidentally revealed his love for RB Jonathon Brooks, who the Panthers took. Kneeland was a Senior Bowl standout.

Key Picks: Ricky Pearsall (WR, Florida), Renardo Green (CB, Florida State), Dominick Puni (OL, Kansas)

Analysis: WR Brandon Aiyuk remains a 49er — and remains in a contract standoff. He and Pearsall are former college teammates. Green’s 2023 move from safety to cornerback really boosted his stock. Puni could be a five-position backup — not enough attention paid to the line.

22. Dolphins

Key Picks: Chop Robinson (EDGE, Penn State), Patrick Paul (OT, Houston), Jaylen Wright (RB, Tennessee)

Analysis: Of course, the blazing fast Wright went to the speed-obsessed Dolphins. Add some more 40-yard touchdowns. Paul thought he was going to be a first-rounder — few agreed, so that could leave a chip on his shoulder. The athletic Robinson gets pressures, not sacks.

23. Buccaneers

Key Picks: Graham Barton (OL, Duke), Chris Braswell (EDGE, Alabama), Tykee Smith (S, Georgia), Jalen McMillan (WR, Washington), Bucky Irving (RB, Oregon)

Analysis: After three years at left tackle, Barton will be asked to move back to his freshman position of center. Braswell made just two career college starts but had an eight-sack season in 2023. McMillan outperformed No. 9 overall pick Rome Odunze in 2022.

24. Seahawks

Analysis: Not only did the Bills trade out of the first round, they allowed the rival Chiefs to land speedy WR Xavier Worthy. Better hope Coleman — the first pick of the second round — can step into Stefon Diggs’ shoes and Bishop can step into Jordan Poyer’s.

26. Panthers

Key Picks: Xavier Legette (WR, South Carolina), Trevin Wallace (LB, Kentucky), Jonathon Brooks (RB, Texas), Ja’Tavion Sanders (TE, Texas)

Analysis: The Panthers salvaged what they could after a March 2023 trade cost them the No. 1-overall pick. The primary goal had to be to surround QB Bryce Young with better playmakers after his disappointing rookie season. Mission accomplished.

27. Jaguars

Key Picks: Brian Thomas Jr. (WR, LSU), Maason Smith (DT, LSU), Jarrian Jones (CB, Florida State)

Analysis: The Calvin Ridley-less Jaguars failed to trade up for a top-three receiver, so they traded down and made Thomas WR4 in the first round. Smith is a first-round talent who was beset by injuries and a suspension. Maybe their scouts only saw LSU play?

Key Picks: Calen Bullock (S, USC), Kamari Lassiter (CB, Georgia), Blake Fisher (OT, Notre Dame)

Analysis: The Texans made their big splash trading a first-round pick to the Vikings and flipping a second-round pick for WR Stefon Diggs. The first- and second-round double whammy in the secondary. Put Lassiter in the slot and Bullock in center field.

29. Broncos

Key Picks: Bo Nix (QB, Oregon), Jonah Elliss (EDGE, Utah), Troy Franklin (WR, Oregon)

Analysis: Head coach Sean Payton’s over-the-top praise for Nix sounds like he is convincing himself that drafting the sixth-rated quarterback on most teams’ boards at No. 12 was smart. No doubt pairing Nix with his favorite college receiver — after Franklin inexplicably fell to No. 102 — was smart.

Key Picks: JC Latham (OT, Alabama), T’Vondre Sweat (DT, Texas), Cedric Gray (LB, North Carolina)

Analysis: A boom-or-bust class right from the top. Was Latham a panic move after the Chargers surprisingly stayed at No. 5 and took Joe Alt? Sweat might have been available a round or two later because of character concerns. Bringing a known partygoer to Nashville is risky.

Key Picks: Michael Hall Jr. (DT, Ohio State), Zak Zinter (G, Michigan)

Analysis: With only two picks in the first four rounds, it seems risky to use one on a reach (Hall) and one on a first-round talent (Zinter) who broke his tibia and fibula in November. The Browns like young draft picks, and Hall is only 20.

32. Falcons

Key Picks: Michael Penix Jr. (QB, Washington), DT Ruke Orhorhoro (DT, Clemson), Bralen Trice (EDGE, Washington)

Analysis: What the heck? After luring Kirk Cousins in free agency, the Falcons picked Penix at No. 8 . He will be 26 before he is really an option to start. Orhorhoro was overdrafted in the top 40. At least Trice addressed a weak pass rush for a team with playoff hopes.

Harvey Weinstein hospitalized ahead of New York court appearance

Film mogul Harvey Weinstein was hospitalized following his return to New York City after an appeals court ruling Thursday nullified his 2020 rape conviction. 

Weinstein's attorney, Arthur L. Aidala, told CBS News in a statement Saturday evening that the New York City Department of Correction "determined that Mr. Weinstein needed immediate medical attention. A myriad of tests are being performed on Harvey and he is being kept for observation."

Frank Dwyer, a spokesperson with the New York City Department of Correction, told the Associated Press that Weinstein remains in custody at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. Thomas Mailey, a spokesperson for the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, said Weinstein was turned over to the city's Department of Correction pursuant to the appeals ruling.

On Thursday, New York's Court of Appeals threw out the conviction  of the onetime movie powerbroker, who prosecutors say forced young actors to submit to his prurient desires by dangling his ability to make or break their careers.

He was convicted of forcibly performing oral sex on a TV and film production assistant and of third-degree rape for an attack on an aspiring actor in 2013.

The appeals court in a 4-3 decision vacated a 23-year jail sentence and ordered a retrial of Weinstein, saying the trial judge erred by letting three women testify about allegations that were not part of the charges and by permitting questions about Weinstein's history of "bad behavior" if he testified. He did not.

Weinstein was moved from an upstate jail to New York City less than 24 hours after the appeals ruling. Weinstein is scheduled to appear in a Manhattan courtroom Wednesday afternoon, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office said, his first hearing since his conviction was overturned. 

The district attorney's office has said it intends to pursue a retrial. Prosecutors will work off the same indictment, albeit excluding the charges he was acquitted of four years ago.

"We will do everything in our power to retry this case, and remain steadfast in our commitment to survivors of sexual assault," the district attorney's office said in a statement Friday, according to the Associated Press.

Weinstein remains jailed after he was also convicted in a similar case in California .

But when could this potential retrial happen? Experts told the Associated Press that it won't be coming to a courtroom anytime soon, if ever. They said it really is up to the witnesses, who will need to decide if they want to take the stand again.

"I think there won't be a trial in the end," said Joshua Naftalis, a former Manhattan federal prosecutor now in private practice. "I don't think he wants to go through another trial, and I don't think the state wants to try him again."

Naftalis said both sides may seek a resolution such as a plea that will eliminate the need to put his accusers through the trauma of a second trial.

Deborah Tuerkheimer, a professor at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and former assistant district attorney in Manhattan, said whether there is a second trial will "hinge on the preferences of the women who would have to testify again and endure the ordeal of a retrial."

"I think ultimately this will come down to whether they feel it's something they want to do, are able to do," she said.

Jane Manning, director of the nonprofit Women's Equal Justice, which provides advocacy services to sexual assault survivors, agreed "the biggest question is whether the two women are willing to testify again."

The lawyers say the road to a trial will include monthslong battles between lawyers over what evidence and testimony will be allowed at a retrial.

A woman Weinstein was sent to prison for sexually assaulting said Friday she is considering whether she would testify at any retiral.

Miriam Haley told reporters she is still processing the state Court of Appeals' decision and is considering numerous factors, including the trauma of having to prepare for another trial and again relive everything that happened to her.

"It was retraumatizing and grueling and exhausting and all the things," she said during a news conference with her attorney, Gloria Allred. "I definitely don't want to actually go through that again. But for the sake of keeping going and doing the right thing and because it is what happened, I would consider it."

Haley, a former "Project Runway" production assistant also known as Mimi Haleyi, testified at Weinstein's trial that she repeatedly told Weinstein "no" when he attacked her inside his apartment in July 2006, forcibly performing oral sex on her. In a 2020 civil lawsuit, Haley said she was left with horror, humiliation and pain that persists.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said Friday that her office is analyzing the scale of the decision and how the state can make sure that all women feel safe coming forward.

"I don't want this to be a moment of stifling the environment that was created where finally we were calling out people who were abusing women in their presence," Hochul said. "We don't want to have any setbacks where there's this sense that you now have to be silenced, and that's something that we have to protect."

The Ghost of the 1968 Antiwar Movement Has Returned

At the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, anti-Vietnam War protesters clashed with police officers — whose brutal role in the confrontation was later described by a federal commission as a “ police riot ” — hijacking the focus of the convention.

Those young demonstrators had come of age seeing continual — and effective — protests during the civil rights movement and national mourning after the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A year earlier King staked out his opposition to the war, saying that while he wasn’t attempting “to make North Vietnam or the National Liberation Front paragons of virtue,” he wanted to underscore his belief “that America would never invest the necessary funds or energies in rehabilitation of its poor so long as adventures like Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money, like some demonic, destructive suction tube.” He said he was “compelled to see the war as an enemy of the poor and attack it as such.”

This was a generation primed for protest, with moral conviction as the foundation of its outrage about the Vietnam War — the first television war, one in which Americans could see the horrors of war, almost in real time — and the draft that saw around two million Americans conscripted during the era. The movement against it began mostly on college campuses and grew.

Of course, semesters end, and students go home for the summer. But their opposition to the war didn’t end with the academic year. In the months leading up to the ’68 Democratic convention, which took place in August, organizers planned a major protest, intended to be held regardless of whether it was allowed, drawing students from around the country. Before the convention, Rennie Davis, one of the organizers, told The New York Times, “No denial of a permit is going to prevent the tens of thousands of people who are coming to Chicago from expressing their convictions on these issues.”

This is all playing out again.

Young people, in particular, are following the Israel-Hamas war on social media, and many are horrified by what they see. They’ve also grown up with protest movements — Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter, the Parkland, Fla., students’ gun control campaign — as the backdrop of their lives. Over 1,000 Black pastors have called on President Biden to press for a cease-fire in Gaza. And we’re seeing antiwar protests spread across college campuses.

As in 1968, the semester will soon end, and those students will leave for the summer, allowing more time and energy for their efforts to be focused on the convention in Chicago in August.

Antiwar groups are already planning large protests at the convention. Hatem Abudayyeh of the U.S. Palestinian Community Network recently told The Chicago Tribune: “We’ll be marching with or without permits. This D.N.C. is the most important one since 1968, also in Chicago, when Vietnam War protesters and the Black liberation movement organized mass demonstrations that were violently repressed.”

And you can see substantial support for their cause. Although the spring 2024 Harvard Youth Poll found that 18-to-29-year-olds tended to rate most other major issues, including inflation and immigration, as more important than the Israel-Palestinian conflict, the survey found that “young Americans support a permanent cease-fire in Gaza” by five to one. And according to a Quinnipiac University poll released on Wednesday, 53 percent of Democrats oppose sending more military aid to Israel for its efforts in the war with Hamas.

There seems to be a sense in the Biden campaign that it can simply wait the protesters out, that passions will eventually fade and that Democratic voters will fall in line when we get closer to Election Day and the choice between Biden and Donald Trump becomes more stark.

That is a reckless gamble. The protesters and many voters are upset about something more than a regular matter of foreign policy. Many believe that they are witnessing a genocide aided and abetted by an American president they supported. They feel personally implicated in a conflict in which the death toll continues to rise, with no end in sight. This is a moral issue for them, and their position won’t be easily altered.

It isn’t easy to unsee the limp body of a dead child in a mother’s arms. It isn’t easy to unsee hungry people scrambling for cover when they come under fire. It isn’t easy to unsee the wreckage after a convoy of food aid trucks came under fire and several aid workers were killed. People have seen all those things on their TVs and phones.

On Oct. 7, about 1,200 people in Israel were killed, and about 240 people were taken hostage in Hamas attacks. At this point in the war, more than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed, and more than 77,000 have been wounded, according to local health officials, in an area with a population of only around two million.

The numbers are staggering. The level of suffering is unacceptable. Young people will make that point clear this summer in Chicago.
