Co Down comedian Patrick Kielty has been confirmed as the new host of RTE's The Late Late Show taking over from current host Ryan Tubridy.

The Dundrum native has told of his excitement at landing the role "on one of the greatest jobs on television".

Kielty becomes the fourth presenter of the show for its 61st season next September after Ryan Tubridy announced in March that he was leaving the show.

Speaking to RTE, Patrick Kielty said: "I'm absolutely thrilled to be the next host of The Late Late Show.

"To follow in the footsteps of Gay, Pat and Ryan as the next custodian is a real honour and I can’t thank RTÉ enough for giving me the chance to be a part of the next chapter of such an iconic show.

"I’m also genuinely humbled to become part of Friday nights for so many Irish people, at home and around the world. I can’t wait to get started on one of the greatest jobs in television."

RTÉ's Director of Content Jim Jennings hailed Kielty saying the new host has big plans for the prime time Friday night show.

He said: "Patrick Kielty is undoubtedly one of Ireland's finest comedians, a fantastic presenter with a depth of experience, and a range of talents that will bring an exciting new dynamic to the show.

"Patrick's personality and passion is sure to connect with audiences and I look forward to it bursting on to screens in September.

"We have very definite ideas for the show already in the works and we’ll be busy behind the scenes shaping the series for launch. We’ll be back in August to tell you all about it".

Speaking about his decision to leave the longest-running live TV chat show in the world, Tubridy said: "It has been a privilege to host the national institution that is The Late Late Show for the last 14 years."

Tubridy will present his final Late Late on Friday 26 May on RTÉ One.

He will continue to present his radio show on weekday mornings from 9.00am - 10.00am on RTÉ Radio 1.

RTE reveal first look at Patrick Kielty on new set of Late Late Show

RTE has revealed a first look of Patrick Kielty in front of the new Late Late Show stage.

With just hours to go on the countdown to his opening night as host, Kielty is busy preparing to go live for the first time on the iconic RTE show.

Meanwhile, RTE has shared a first look at what the show will look like with the Co Down native as host.

Kielty looks like he means business in the first look images, standing with his arms folded and smiling to the camera in front of the newly decorated studio.

The new flashy set takes centre stage, featuring an American-style brightly lit sign with the show’s name on it hung over a curtain where this year’s guests are set to appear.

The set reveal comes after Kielty and RTE have been faced with numerous questions over how the new show will look and compare to previous seasons.

Responding to rumours of big changes ranging from the death of the famous owl and music to a totally different format based on UK style chat shows like Graham Norton or Jonathon Ross style, the new host said: “Change, no change. That is the logo,” as he laughed off all the speculation doing the rounds.

He told Irish Mirror: “It’s funny when you look at all of those stories about ‘ah he’s killed the owl, he’s killed music..’ you have to laugh at stuff like that because none of it is true,” he said.

The Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty unveils new set ahead of its new season. v

“I’m kind of hoping it is going to be Patrick Kielty style… and of course there’s going to be music,” he confirmed. Naturally, he is also hoping to embrace his own comedic flair and bring the 'craic' back to the late night show.

“I think in a talk show the biggest change is going to be in your personality and who you are and how you interact with people on screen.

“But also I think that comes with how you interact with people in life, and I think that one of the things when you have comedic sensibilities and all of that is in your background, you want the show to be fun and have fun, and you want to have those moments where we are having the craic.”

“So for me it is about trying to bring a little bit of me on to the stuff that has maybe been there before, and maybe some of the stuff you haven’t seen, that people on a Friday kind of want to have.

The Late Late Show airs Friday 15th September, 9:35pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.

Late Late host Patrick Kielty to lead Dublin’s St Patrick’s Day parade as Grand Marshall

Late late show host said it was an ‘honour’ to accept the traditional role ahead of next month’s festivities.

The Late Late Show

Co Down comedian and Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty has said being chosen to lead Dublin’s St Patrick’s Day parade was a “pinch-me moment”.

The Dundrum native has been named the Grand Marshall for next month’s parade through Dublin city centre, which is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of spectators.

Kielty, who took over presenting the RTÉ's flagship chat show last September, will lead the parade in the traditional role, which is reserved for people of note.

Last year the Grand Marshall role was taken by the entire Ireland women’s soccer team, and in 2022 the parade was led by Olympic gold medallist Kellie Harrington and Paralympian Ellen Keane.

Speaking of taking up duties at this year’s parade, which is the main event of Dublin’s four-day St Patrick’s Festival running from March 15-18, Kielty told RTÉ that being asked was “one of those pinch-me moments”.

“I mean, when you’re called Patrick, you’re christened Patrick, you’re born in a place called Downpatrick, and then to get the call to be even a small part of this parade, let alone to do the job they have asked me to do this year,” he said.

“I have travelled a lot and I always get homesick if I’m not in Ireland for Paddy’s Day. For me it’s like a second birthday...the amount of terrible pints I’ve had in bad plastic glasses in countries that don’t understand Paddy’s Day over the years.

“So just to be home and have the family around, and have them coming down and being part of it, it’s really special.

The theme for this year’s parade is ‘Spréach’, Irish for ‘spark’, which will be reflected in the colourful floats and costumes of the estimated 4,000 participants who will walk the route from Parnell Square North to Kevin Street close to St Stephen’s Green.

Dublin’s Lord Mayor Daithí de Róiste said the annual parade is “one of our most special occasions, celebrating the Spréach of the people of Ireland, which unites us all both here in Dublin and across the globe”.
