A Guide to Dublin Public Transport

August 27, 2024

Latest News

dublin tour bus route

Boasting rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, it’s no secret Dublin is a top destination for tourists from around the world. While the city is easy to explore on foot, using the city’s public transport network will allow you to visit every corner of the county, from the heart of the city to the scenic coast

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the various options available in the Dublin public transport network — buses, trams, trains, and more — along with tips for navigating the city like a local. From purchasing the right tickets to catching the best routes, we’ve got you covered!

Public Transport Tickets in Dublin

When it comes to tickets for public transport in Dublin, the Leap Card is your best friend. This reusable smart card offers discounted fares compared to cash payments and can be used across all public transport modes in Dublin.

Leap Cards can be purchased in most shops and newsagents. Leap cards will need to be topped up when purchased, which can be done through the Leap Card app, at convenience stores, or directly at some train stations or LUAS stops. For tourists, there are special Leap Visitor Cards available, offering unlimited travel for a set period.

Without a Leap Card below are the available payment methods for tickets:

  • Dublin Bus: Pay cash only (coins only, no notes). Card payment is not accepted. Payment can be made to the driver upon boarding. Ensure exact change as no change will be given.
  • LUAS: Tickets can be purchased with cash or card at self-service machines at every stop.
  • DART: Tickets can be purchased with cash or card. Tickets can be purchased at the DART station.
  • Irish Rail: Tickets can be purchased with cash or card. Tickets can be purchased at the train station or in advance online when travelling on longer journeys outside of Dublin.

dublin tour bus route

Dublin Bus is the backbone of the city’s public transport network, offering extensive coverage across Dublin and its suburbs. With over 100 routes, the iconic yellow and blue buses will connect you to all major attractions, shopping districts, and residential areas, making it a great option for getting around the city.

Routes and schedules are organised so that buses run frequently from early morning until late at night. Real Time Information (RTI) is a handy tool, providing live updates on bus arrivals at stops across the city. You can access this information via the Dublin Bus website, the Transport for Ireland (TFI) app or by checking the digital displays at bus stops.

If you’re flying into Dublin, the Airlink Express (routes 747 and 757) provides a direct connection between Dublin Airport and the city centre, with stops at central locations like O’Connell Street and Heuston Station.

dublin tour bus route

The LUAS is Dublin’s light rail tram system, providing a fast and easy way to travel across the city. The system is divided into two lines: the Red Line and the Green Line. The Red Line runs from Tallaght to The Point, passing through areas like Heuston Station, the Guinness Storehouse, and O’Connell Street. The Green Line, on the other hand, stretches from Broombridge to Bride’s Glen, covering stops including St. Stephen’s Green, Dundrum, and Sandyford.

For visitors to Dublin, the LUAS is an excellent way to access some of the city’s most popular attractions. On the Red Line, you can easily reach Kilmainham Gaol, the Smithfield area, and the Docklands, home to the EPIC Museum. Whereas the Green Line offers access to Trinity College, and charming villages like Ranelagh and Rathmines and lovely suburban parks along the southern stretch of Dublin.

The LUAS is ideal for quick, hassle-free travel, whether you’re heading to a tourist spot or simply moving around the city. If you’re planning to use the LUAS during peak hours (8-9 AM and 5-7 PM), be prepared for busy trams, especially in the city centre.

dublin tour bus route

The DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) offers one of the most scenic train journeys in Ireland, running along Dublin’s picturesque coastline from Greystones, just south of Dublin, to Howth and Malahide in the north of the county. The DART connects Dublin’s city centre with lovely coastal villages and towns, making it perfect for both daily commutes and leisurely day trips.

Many visitors to Dublin choose to travel on the DART purely because of the views this coastal route gives of Dublin Bay, as the train passes through seaside towns like Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey, and Bray. These stops offer access to sandy beaches, historic castles, and breathtaking cliff walks, making the DART a great public transport choice for tourists looking to explore beyond Dublin City.

With regular DART services running every 10 to 15 minutes, planning a day trip outside of the city centre is easy. Whether you’re heading to the fishing village of Howth for fresh seafood or the charming town of Greystones for a relaxing beach day, the DART is one of the best ways to experience the best of Dublin’s coast.

Irish Rail provides an extensive network of train services that connect Dublin with other cities and towns across Ireland, making it an excellent choice for day trips or longer journeys. Whether you’re looking to explore the mediaeval city of Kilkenny, the cultural scene in Cork, or the stunning landscapes of Galway, taking the train with Irish Rail is a great way to experience Ireland without the need for a car.

For regional trips, Irish Rail offers frequent services from Dublin’s main stations, including Heuston and Connolly. From here, you can travel directly to cities like Limerick, Waterford, and Belfast in comfort, and with free Wi-Fi!

If you’re planning a trip outside of Dublin, booking in advance is recommended for Irish Rail, especially for longer journeys and often comes with discounted fares.

DublinBikes and Cycling

dublin tour bus route

DublinBikes is a bike-sharing scheme that offers a convenient way to explore the city. With over 100 stations located around Dublin, you’re never far from a bike. For visitors to use the service, you can purchase a three-day ticket, or opt for an annual ticket, which allows you to pick up and drop off bikes at any station.

Cycling is a great way to see Dublin at your own pace, with dedicated lanes and routes making it safe and enjoyable. Popular routes include the scenic paths along the Grand Canal, the Docklands, and the Phoenix Park. When using DublinBikes, it’s important to always wear a helmet, follow traffic rules, and be mindful of pedestrians to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride.

Taxis and Ride-Sharing

dublin tour bus route

Dublin offers a variety of taxi services, from traditional street-hail taxis to app-based ride-sharing options like FREE NOW, Uber, and Bolt. Traditional taxis are easily recognisable with their lit up roof signs and can be found at taxi ranks across the city or hailed directly from the street. For even more convenience, the FREE NOW, Uber, and Bolt apps allow you to book and track a ride with just a few taps.

When using taxis, it’s important to note that fares are metered, and tipping is customary but not obligatory. Taxis are a great way to get around Dublin later at night when public transport options are limited, or when travelling in larger groups when splitting the fare makes it affordable.

Tips for Using Public Transport in Dublin

When planning your trips on Dublin’s public transport, we’d recommend downloading apps like TFI Real Time, which gives live updates on bus, LUAS, and DART services.

For tickets, the Leap Card is your best bet for seamless travel across all transport modes, offering significant savings on fares and ease of travel.

While using public transport in Dublin, remember to observe common courtesy, such as offering your seat to those in need and keeping noise levels low to ensure a comfortable experience for everyone on board. And don’t forget to thank your bus driver like a real Dublin local!

Thank you for reading our blog ‘A Guide to Dublin Public Transport’. We hope to see you in The Temple Bar Pub soon.

Coldplay in Dublin: Croke Park concert setlist, times and weather forecast

dublin tour bus route

Coldplay fans all over Ireland are bracing themselves for a sky full of stars and no doubt a night to remember at Croke Park in the coming days.

With the countdown to the band's run of shows in Dublin as part of their Music Of The Spheres world tour officially on, there are some things to bear in mind.

Here's everything you need to know about Coldplay's Croke Park gigs:

When is Coldplay playing at Croke Park?

Chris Martin of Coldplay. Pic: Shirlaine Forrest/WireImage

The group will play Croker over four nights starting on Thursday, August 29, and concluding on Monday, September 2.

The series of concerts was initially due to run until September 2, but a fourth date was added back in July due to phenomenal demand.

What's the weather going to be like?

Obviously, the Irish weather is rather unpredictable, but at present it's looking like the rain will kindly hold off for each of Coldplay's four Dublin gigs.

According to Accuweather , highs of 20°C are expected across the four days, but we'd still recommend bringing a light layer just in case!

How to get there

Fans cheer as Coldplay performs at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark as part of the Music of the Spheres World Tour

The following Dublin bus routes serve Croke Park: 1, 6, 7(a), 11, 13, 15, 16, 27(a/b), 33, 40(b/d/e), 41(b/c/d), 42, 43, 44, 53a, 122, 123, 130, H1, H2 and H3.

A number of private regional bus companies are also providing transport to the gigs with tickets costing from €35.

Drumcondra Dart station is also a few minutes walk away from the venue. Alternatively, Croke Park is a 16-minute walk from the Connolly Red Luas Line and also 15 minutes from the Parnell and Marlborough Green Line Luas stops.

Who is supporting Coldplay at Croke Park?

Coldplay named a number of support acts back in February including English singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers and of course our own Aby Coulibaly .

What time will the concert begin?

Doors will be from 5pm each night, with Aby Coulibaly expected to grace the stage at 6.30pm followed by Maggie Rogers at 7.15pm.

Coldplay are expected to begin their set, which should last for around two hours, at 8.30pm. MCD Productions recommend that customers should plan to be within Croke Park no later than 45 minutes before the show begins.

Hoping to see Chris and co. belt out your favourite track? Per their latest concert in Vienna on August 22, Coldplay's setlist looks a little like this:

  • Higher Power
  • Adventure of a Lifetime
  • The Scientist
  • Viva La Vida
  • Hymn for the Weekend
  • Don't Panic
  • God Put a Smile Upon Your Face
  • Human Heart

Coldplay in Dublin FAQ: Approach routes, tickets, setlist, weather, stage times, etc

Coldplay in Dublin FAQ: Approach routes, tickets, setlist, weather, stage times, etc

Coldplay haven't played Dublin since 2017. Picture: Stephen Collins/Collins Photos

Coldplay have already arrived in Dublin for four much-anticipated shows in Croke Park on Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday.

The English band bring their Music of the Spheres World Tour to Ireland more than two years after it kicked off in March 2022. Since then, over eight million tickets have been sold.

Playing here last in 2017, fans have eagerly been awaiting the show since tickets went on sale last year.

Here is everything you need to know about Coldplay’s Dublin shows.

What can we expect

Fans can expect to eat well, with the Music of the Spheres tour being described as a visual feast. This is down to masterful animations and immersive lighting. The show is structured into four acts, spaced over three stages dotted across the stadium.

RTÉ's John Byrne, who attended the show in Amsterdam, said that those present are "made to feel a part of the experience rather than being mere spectators. You're not here to merely observe, but to participate."

What will they play?

Looking at Coldplay's set list from their latest show in Vienna, fans can expect a number of the band's well known hits — The Scientist, Viva La Vida, Hymn for the Weekend, Yellow, Clocks, A Sky Full of Stars and more.

Some of the group's newer, EDM songs will also feature, though reviews of the show have said there is a noticeable lull during these moments and other less known songs.

What are the timings?

Support acts Aby Coulibaly and Maggie Rogers are expected on stage at 6.30pm and 7.15pm respectively, with Coldplay’s two-hour set expected to kick off around 8.30pm.

Are tickets still available?

Nope – tickets were snapped up shortly after they went on sale last July, leaving many fans disappointed. At the time, many expressed frustration with presales, long Ticketmaster queues and packages costing up to €987.50.

Demand was so high that the band added on the Sunday and Monday night shows, but there are still plenty of disappointed fans out there.

If your Instagram feed is anything like mine, you will have seen plenty of stories sharing competitions to win tickets for the shows and desperate fans still trying to get their hands on tickets by any means necessary.

Though Ticketmaster do offer a resale service, AIB has issued advice on how not to get scammed in the days leading up to the shows. They suggest being wary of tickets sold across social media. Twitter, in particular, has become a hotspot for scams around any gigs.

The bank also says to not pay for tickets by way of bank transfer or card with the promise that tickets will be delivered. You wouldn’t want to be holding your breath to get them.

Getting there

For those coming from Cork, get on the M8 from the N8. Follow this road onto the M7 before entering the N7 in Kildare. Make your way on to the M50 in Dublin, bearing in mind there are tolls on this road, and continue into the city centre. Continue on the R135 before taking Iona Road to St Joseph’s Avenue and onto Jones’ Road.

If driving, it’s worth noting that there is no car park onsite at the stadium but there are limited parking options in the immediate vicinity of the stadium.

O’Connell Schools’ Supervised Car Park, North Circular Road, is open two hours before events in Croke Park and one hour after. In the city centre, Q-Park at The Spire car park on Marlborough Street and Q-Park Parnell Centre on Parnell Street are open 24 hours a day.

Due to the lack of parking, concert-goers are encouraged to carpool or take public transport where possible.

Dublin Bus routes serving Croke Park include 1, H1, H2, H3, 7, 11, 13, 14, 16, 27/A/B, 29A, 31/A/B, 32, 33, 40/B/D, 41/B/C, 42, 43, 44, 53, 123, 130.

If arriving by train from Cork to Heuston, the Luas Red Line goes from outside the station in Dublin and stops at Connolly Station. From here, it is just a 15 minute walk to Croke Park. The stadium is a similar walking distance from both Parnell and Marlborough stops on the Luas Green Line.

Alight at Connolly Station or Clontarf Road if heading on the Dart and alight at Connolly or Drumcondra for commuter trains.

Those heading to the concert should be aware that road closures will be in operation and taxis and private coaches will not be permitted to enter the cordon.

Approach routes

Check your tickets and follow the colour coordinating with the area of the stadium you need to get to:

BLUE ROUTE (Hogan Stand): Enter via Jones Road and Russell Street.

RED ROUTE (Cusack Stand): Enter via St James Avenue and Foster Terrace.

YELLOW ROUTE (Davin Stand): Enter via St Margaret’s Terrace.

GREEN ROUTE (PITCH A): Enter via Josephs Avenue.

RED ROUTE (PITCH B & C): Enter via St James Avenue and Foster Terrace.

How’s the weather looking?

Despite all of the rain over the last few days, the weather isn’t looking too bad for the four shows at the time of writing, but as we all know, this could change.

According to Met Eireann, temperatures will stay between 13 and 16 degrees over the four nights with generally clear conditions. Sunday evening is looking like there will be rain.

Regardless of the weather, MCD have said the event will take place “rain, hail or shine” so it may be wise to invest in a poncho.

What can I not bring?

Leave the usual suspects at home, such as professional cameras and audio recording equipment, bags larger than A4 size, alcohol, glass bottles, cans, flares and selfie sticks.

Collapsable/camping chairs and stools and garden furniture are not permitted in the venue.

If it does rain on Sunday, be aware that umbrellas are not permitted in the stadium.

Flagpoles are not allowed but banners, flags or posters can be brought in once they fit inside bags when folded away.

Here's everything you need to know about Coldplay's Dublin gigs

BRITISH ROCK BAND Coldplay have returned to Dublin to play two sold-out concerts in Croke Park.

This is the band’s second time playing the national stadium, having been here in 2017.

The four shows, which take place tonight, Friday, Sunday and Monday, are part of Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres Tour.

Stadium gates will open at 5pm and early queuing is not permitted.

The first support act is Dublin R&B artist Coulibaly, who will take to the stage at 6:30pm, followed by American singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers at 7:15pm.

Coldplay are due on stage at 8:30pm and are set to play for two hours.

The stadium holds over 80,000 people and gardaí are keen to manage resources.

Dublin football rivals Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers had their Dalymount Park game rescheduled to the earlier time of 11:30am on Sunday to spread out personnel.

Those attending the Coldplay gig are encouraged to walk or take public transport.

The nearest DART stations are Drumcondra and Connolly.

Croke Park is also about a 15 minute walk from each of the Connolly (Red line), Parnell and Marlborough (Green line) Luas stops.

Dublin Bus routes that drop off near Croke Park include 1, 6, 7(a), 11, 13, 15, 16, 27(a/b), 33, 40(b/d/e), 41(b/c/d), 42, 43, 44, 53a, 122, 123, 130, H1, H2, and H3.

All public transport information can be found on the TFI.ie.

Last night, lead singer Chris Martin surprised fans with an open air live show on Grafton Street , which garnered a crowd of thousands.

Other artists who’ve done this include Niall Horan, Ed Sheeran and Gavan James.
