10 places to put your paddle in around the city.

From downtown Melbourne to the neighbouring day trip tourist haunts of the Great Ocean Road and the Mornington Peninsula , there’s an abundance of waterways perfect for kayaking in Melbourne.

But where exactly are the BEST places to kayak in and around Melbourne? Let’s find out.

Best Kayaking in Melbourne

1. yarra river.

Best entry point: Como Landing or Crays Landing

Want to kayak in Melbourne, huh? The first place to look is the waterway that runs right through the heart of the city. Yup, I’m talking about the Yarra River.

The Yarra River is a popular spot for paddlers, from beginners who want to try out kayaking , through to the more experienced. Not only is the Yarra River wide and gentle, but it’s a unique place to take in the cityscape.

There are a few launch sites to choose from. For the full experience, it’s best to start upstream of Church Street Bridge. The further the better, depending on your fitness levels. By starting further upstream, the transition from relative nature (for a city), into the urban area delivers some great visual impact.

Paddling past Federation Square, then through Southbank, South Wharf, and into the Docklands area, really is a unique experience.

Grab some lunch, and then enjoy it all over again on the way back!

Don’t limit yourself to daytime trips only though! The same trip down the Yarra River can be enjoyed at dusk or even later. Some say Melbourne looks more beautiful when lit up at night.

2. Brighton

Best entry point: Brighton Baths

Toddle past the historical Brighton beach boxes down to Brighton Baths for a perfect option to explore the beautiful bayside area by kayak.

Beginners can easily practice kayaking in the sheltered sea baths, while those with more experience with a sea kayak can explore Port Phillip Bay and the open ocean.

Hoping to hire a boat? No worries, there are operators who can hook you up with a rental canoe or kayak, including Brighton Baths Health Club and Kayak Shop Australia .

3. St Kilda Beach

Best entry point: The beach itself

With gorgeous seaside views, and cafes aplenty, St Kilda Beach has earned its popularity from locals and tourists alike. Right in the heart of Melbourne, this spot is a great place for a day of sea kayaking.

You can kayak around the pier or even take a guided sea kayaking tour around St Kilda.

As you paddle, take in breathtaking views of Melbourne City, Williamstown, and Port Melbourne.

Head a bit further towards the breakwater, and you just might be lucky enough to spot a penguin or two from the local colony.

4. Williamstown

Best entry point: Williamstown and Newport Anglers’ Club

Looking for somewhere a little bit quieter and beginner-friendly? Williamstown is a generally quiet spot with calm sheltered waters perfect for someone trying out their sea legs.

Launch from Williamstown and Newport Anglers’ Club, and go for a laid-back kayak past Williamstown Beach and around Port Phillip Bay.

Otherwise, paddle calm waters around Point Gellibrand and keep an eye out for the dolphins that like to frolic in the area.

Best kayaking around melbourne, 5. mornington peninsula.

Driving time from Melbourne: 90 minutes Best entry point: Sorrento front beach or Point Nepean

The Mornington Peninsula is just a 90 minute drive from Melbourne CBD (you can see the skyscrapers in the distance on a good day).

The entire Mornington Peninsula has a gorgeous coastline, but towards the tip are Sorrento and Point Nepean. Launch your watercraft out from here.

Not only will you enjoy the beautiful scenery, but you have the chance to see penguins, seals, and even dolphins up close – what more could you want from a spot of sea kayaking ?

melbourne kayak night tour

The coastline’s lined with millionaires’ mansions, some with helicopters sitting in the front garden. There are worse ways to see how the other half live!

Be cautious heading out beyond the shoreline as the currents are among the strongest in Australia. If you’re quite experienced at sea kayaking you’ll be fine, but make sure a mate knows when to expect you home!

6. Great Ocean Road

Driving time from Melbourne: 90 minutes Best entry point: Apollo Bay or Angelsea boat ramp

The eastern side of the Great Ocean Road is our next port of call.

Both Apollo Bay and Anglesea provide great opportunities for some paddling, and again we’re talking only 90 minutes away from Melbourne CBD by car.

What happens when you run the Surf Coast Walk? - Leah Furey, Running, Surf Coast Walk,

Apollo Bay sits close to the gateway of the very scenic Great Otway National Park . Just a few hundred metres from the shore lies Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary, which holds a local fur seal colony and other sea life.

You can join a kayak tour around the colony if that’s your thing, otherwise, you’re able to hire a kayak and paddling gear to fit your needs.

A little further eastbound along the coast sit Lorne and Anglesea. Both these locations cater for all skill levels.

Head west and you have the inland options around Cape Otway ( Aire River ) and Princetown (Gellibrand River). Princetown sits next door to the world-famous Twelve Apostles, so it’s a good chance to kill two birds with one stone. Not literally of course!

7. Lake Nagambie

Driving time from Melbourne: 1 hour 40 minutes Best entry point: There are plenty of ideal spots along the shoreline to ease in

Around an hour and 40 minutes’ drive north of Melbourne, Lake Nagambie is an excellent spot for a boating day out.

The lake hosts plenty of kayaking championship competitions throughout the year, so it’s perfect for kayakers of all levels. Outside of regatta days and rowing events, it’s a hotspot for kayaking, fishing , sailing, and swimming.

If you haven’t got a kayak of your own, or are still new to the sport there are plenty of boats for hire near the lake.

8. Barwon Heads

Driving time from Melbourne: 90 minutes Best entry point: The Barwon Heads small boat ramp

Just 90 minutes outside of Melbourne, Barwon River in Barwon Heads is a kayaker’s paradise. With calm shallow waters, it’s a great spot for beginners and experienced kayakers alike to spend a relaxed day paddling. It’s also an excellent spot if you feel like a sea kayak without too much swell.

Boat and gear hire is readily available , and with plenty of sand along the shore, it’s simple to ease your craft into the water.

There’s even a bunch of cafes nearby to treat yourself to a delightful feed after a day of paddling.

Kayaking Weekenders from Melbourne

9. gippsland rivers & lakes.

Driving time from Melbourne: 3-4 hours Best entry point: Depending on which lake and river you choose to kayak from, there are lots of entry point options!

This is a must-do if you are anywhere near Melbourne. You could sample this in a day trip from the city, but it’s recommended that you stay at least one night – and more if you can!

Gippsland has a series of lakes and rivers for those that love freshwater, but there are some cool spots to visit around the coastline too – like Ninety Mile Beach.

The top two river choices are Snowy and Mitchell Rivers.

melbourne kayak night tour

The Snowy River is the calmer of the two, with awesome scenery. There are plenty of tours in the area which is great for those with little-to-no kayaking experience.

The Mitchell River is a little faster with grade 3 and 4 rapids for the more experienced kayaker. This entices canoeists and white water rafters alike.

If you want a really leisurely cruise, head over to Gippsland Lakes. Often referred to as the ‘Gippy’ lakes, and at over 100kms, this is Australia’s largest enclosed waterway. The main still waters are King, Reeve, Wellington, and Victoria Lakes. If you like the festival vibe when you paddle, check out the annual Gippsland Lakes Paddle Challenge to see the best of the region between Paynesville, Metung, and Lakes Entrance.

Mallacoota Inlet is another popular lake option, but it’s a bit further to trek, as it’s closer to the NSW border in East Gippsland. You can also paddle up and down the Wallagaraugh River that flows into it and the views are out of this world.

Turn your kayaking trip into a holiday: Your Adventure Guide to an East Gippsland Getaway

10. The Grampians

Driving time from Melbourne: 4 hours Best entry point: Boat ramp at the end of Kellett St

If you really want to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban life, take yourself out to the Grampians and go kayaking along the Glenelg River.

The Glenelg River is over 400km in length. Don’t worry, we’re not going to ask you to paddle the full length! Instead, head down towards the border town of Nelson. From here, there’s around 30km of stunning limestone cliffs that edge the river.

If you have the resources and 2-4 spare days, you can car shuffle and turn the trip into a kayak- camping trip. The Grampians is crammed full of great places to eat , and there are a tonne of epic hikes, scenic sunset spots , and unique adventures to be enjoyed here.

There are some dedicated kayak campsites along the river for you to pitch up at, or you can book a stay at a cute little wooden cabin! Check out the We Are Explorers Basecamp to find your perfect accommodation vibe!

Kayaking in Melbourne FAQs

Can i kayak anywhere in melbourne.

Yes, you’re allowed to kayak in any public waterways in Melbourne, so long as it’s deep enough and safe to do so.

Do I need to wear a life jacket when I’m kayaking in Melbourne?

Anyone using a low powered kayak or canoe is not required to hold a licence or register the watercraft, but will legally need to be wearing a life jacket.

Do I need other safety equipment?

It’s recommended by Maritime Safety Victoria that all paddlers use a paddle leash, to ensure you stay attached to your kayak if you capsize. If you find yourself in a dangerous situation or you capsize, Maritime Safety Victoria asks paddlers to stay with their watercraft as it’s much easier to spot.

A communication device and means of removing water from your watercraft are also recommended.

Where else can I kayak in Australia?

Explorers have jumped in their kayaks all around Australia. From an overnight river paddle in SA , to kayaking the Kimberley , competing for pineapples in Perth  (yes, it’s as weird as it sounds), and paddling the Freycinet Peninsula in Tassie, we’ve been everywhere man.

Check out these lists of the best places to kayak in Sydney , and the best places for a paddle on the Sunshine Coast  too.

10 of Melbourne’s best kayaking spots

Profile picture of Alix Nicholson

You might be surprised to learn that you don’t have to get very far out of Melbourne to get a great kayaking experience. In fact, some of the best paddling can be done right in the heart of Victoria’s capital city.

Why go kayaking?

Similar to canoeing, kayaking involves propelling a lightweight craft through the water using a double-ended paddle. It’s a fun, easy sport that’s great for kids and adults – and is a fun way to get out on the water and see local wildlife and surrounds during the long, hot Aussie summer.

Kayaking is also fantastic form of low-impact exercise that can help improve cardiovascular fitness, and build strength – particularly in the back, arms, shoulders, chest and torso – and flexibility.

Whether you have your own gear or need to hire some, there’s one kayaking essential that’s not hard to find, and won’t cost a thing: Just add water! From gentle cruising down a calm river or on a gentle stretch of lagoon to sea and surf kayaking, and even taking on white water rapids, there are so many ways to enjoy the sport.

Where to kayak in Melbourne

There are plenty of place to kayak in Melbourne and its surrounding areas, from inland lakes to marine wildlife sanctuaries and everything in between. And the best bit is that you don’t have to trek far out of the city to find them. With some locales right in the heart of the CBD (hello, Yarra River) and others just a 25-minute drive out of town – yet somehow worlds away – there are many beautiful spots to have a paddle.

10. lower yarra river, melbourne.

The Yarra River is an icon of the Melbourne CBD, and plays host to all sorts of watersports – including, of course, kayaking. The flat waters of the lower Yarra, which runs through the heart of the city, are a paddler’s playground. Grab your vessel and hit the water at the Botanic Gardens launch near Morrell’s Bridge, then paddle up towards Herron Island or down to the Docklands.

Not keen to go it alone? There are heaps of companies offer kayak tours as a unique alternative way of getting to know the city. Check out Kayak Melbourne’s City Sights tour for $82, or their popular Moonlight Tour  for $99 (prices include all paddling gear plus water and a guide – and fish and chips for the night-time cruisers!)

9. Williamstown

If you want to shift from the river to the sea, a quick 25-minute drive to Williamstown will put you in a perfect spot for some laidback kayaking within the calm waters of Port Phillip Bay. The area was established as Melbourne’s first port in 1837, and is a great launching spot for those new to kayaking.

The generally calm sheltered waters offer up an easy ride as you paddle around Point Gellibrand – be sure to keep an eye out for dolphins! Or head around the bend to Williamstown beach and launch from the ramp at the Williamstown and Newport Anglers’ Club .

When you’re done working up an appetite, head back to shore for some of the area’s famed fish and chips.

8. Gippsland Lakes

Okay, so this one’s not exactly “close” to Melbourne – you’re looking at around a 3.5-hour drive – but it’s well worth the trip for some of the best kayaking that the area has to offer. Make a weekend of it and you’ll be treated to literally hundreds of spots from which to launch your kayaking adventure.

Hire some gear or join a guided tour and explore the waters of popular Ninety Mile Beach – one of the longest unspoilt stretches of sand you’ll find in the world. You might just catch a glimpse of the local seals and dolphins that play in the area, which is teeming with marine life. Or launch your vessel at Lakes Entrance and spend a lazy day exploring the still and serene waters of the lakes.

7. St Kilda Beach, Melbourne

Back towards the heart of the city you’ll find St Kilda – a buzzing locale and a favourite amongst locals and visitors alike, not only for its beautiful beach but also its thriving nightlife and cafe culture. Take a sea kayak out on the water for a guided tour , paddle around the pier, and head towards the breakwater to catch a glimpse of the little penguin colony that calls the area home.

Even without the cute seabirds, the view of Hobson’s Bay and Williamstown from across the water makes for a beautiful day at sea – all a half hour from the city.

St Kilda kayaking

6. Lake Nagambie

This lake is the site for numerous kayaking championship competitions during the year – so you know you know it’s a good spot to launch your vessel. Around an hour and 40 minutes’ drive north of Melbourne, Lake Nagambie has an abundance of wildlife to spot as you navigate around the calm waters. It’s also a hotspot for  for fishing, sailing, water-skiing and swimming,  making it a great location for a family day out.

When you’re done paddling, take a stroll around the vibrant town of Nagambie , which sits on the shores of the lake, or visit the local wineries in the cool-climate region.

5. Barwon Heads

When the tide is out, pick up some kayaking gear (or bring your own) and head out on the sparkling water of Barwon Heads. An hour and a half out of Melbourne, on the  southern coast of the Bellarine Peninsula,  just south of Geelong, this quiet beach and estuary offers keen paddlers a quintessential Aussie summer spot.

Paddle at your own pace along the pristine estuary where the Barwon River meets the sea, glide past the jetty and stop in at the quaint blue restaurant its end, At The Heads , for lunch.

4. Lake Wendouree, Ballarat

An hour and a half’s drive north-west of Melbourne CBD, in the city of Ballarat, Lake Wendouree was the site of the canoeing, kayaking and rowing events of the 1956 Olympics, and is still a popular spot amongst locals and tourists alike for water sports of all kind today.

Glide along the placid waters beside black swans, ducks, dusky moorhens, purple swamphens, cormorants and other birdlife that call this spot home. If you time your visit right, you can also take a stroll around the Lakeside Farmers Market on the second and fourth Saturday morning of each month and pick up some of the region’s fresh local produce.

Lake Wendouree kayaking

3. Upper Yarra, Warrandyte

More experienced kayakers looking for a bumpier ride should head up to Warrandyte and check out the upper part of the Yarra. It’s not a long trek – just 26 minutes from Melbourne – but the grade I to III rapids will get whet your adventure whistle.

While it’s pretty close to the city, the popular stretch of river from Homestead Road to Wittons Reserve can feel remote as you paddle your way through beautiful dense bushland.

If you’re new to kayaking but want to take on some tamer rapids, there are plenty of providers offering guided river tours in Warrandyte.

Warrandyte kayaking

2. Apollo Bay, Great Ocean Road

What makes this kayaking hotspot so special is the  Marengo Reefs Marine Sanctuary. Hire some gear  (if you don’t have your own) and paddle out to the area, around 150m offshore, to the protected reef system known as Little Henty Reef. You’ll be rewarded with views of the abundant sea life – think sea beautiful seaweed gardens colourful soft corals, sponge gardens and sea urchins.

But the real treat is the local fur seal colony who – if you’re lucky – might take a break from lying around on the rocks in the sun and come to say hello.

Apollo Bay kayaking

1. Mornington Peninsula

For a safer, calmer ride on the stunning Mornington Peninsula, choose from the pristine beaches on the bay side – the gentler waters offer a more relaxing experience than the pounding surf on the front beaches.

Start at the sparkling, crystal-clear waters of Sorrento and paddle up past Portsea towards Point Nepean, where you’ll find the dolphin sanctuary – and maybe even glide along with bottlenose and common dolphins swimming alongside you. You may also spot seals, penguins and more out on the water.

If you’re taking yourself out for the journey, please don’t kayak across The Rip; or consider joining a guided tour so all you have to worry about is looking out for local wildlife!
