Your email has been sent

Image of Aminu Abdullahi

One remarkable development in AI has been the advancement of realistic AI image generators. These tools can generate hyper-realistic images from text descriptions, allowing you to create images based on your imagination.

Midjourney and Dall-E 2 are some of the best AI image generators . Midjourney uses generative adversarial networks and the diffusion technique to create realistic images via Discord’s interface. On the other hand, Dall-E 2 is an AI tool designed by OpenAI that allows you to create realistic images from natural language text prompts.

In this comparison, we will delve into the features and performance of Midjourney and Dall-E 2, exploring their strengths and weaknesses to help you determine which AI art generator is best for you.

Midjourney vs. Dall-E 2: Comparison table

Midjourney and dall-e 2 pricing.

Midjourney and Dall-E 2 offer a wide range of pricing options. With Midjorney, you can buy a monthly or annual payment license. On the other hand, Dall-E 2 offers a pay-as-you-use plan by charging per image generated, or you may choose to buy credits that allow you to generate images up to a specific limit.

Note that neither Midjourney nor Dall-E 2 offer free versions or trials. You will need to purchase a subscription to access their services.

Midjourney pricing

A major factor in pricing for Midjourney is the GPU. The GPU determines how fast your image is generated. In Midjourney, images are generated based on a queue system. When you pay for higher plans, you get access to faster GPU, more jobs and a waiting queue to process your request.

The pricing plans for Midjourney are broken down into four, each with a range of features and accessibility. All the plans below allow you to purchase extra GPU time at $4 per hour:

  • Basic : $10 per month or $96 per year.
  • Standard : $30 per month or $288 per year.
  • Pro plan : $60 per month or $576 per year.
  • Mega plan : $120 per month or $1,152 per year.

Dall-E 2 pricing

Dall-E 2 pricing structure is different from that of Midjourney. With Dall-E 2, you use credit to generate images. Dall-E 2 offers 115 credits for $15, with the max purchasable credit from the Dall-E 2 page capped at 11,500 credits costing $1,500. Credits are further charged based on the image resolution:

  • 1024×1024 resolution costs $0.020 per image.
  • 512×512 resolution costs $0.018 per image.
  • 256×256 resolution costs $0.016 per image.

Feature comparison: Midjourney vs. Dall-E 2

Easy of use.

Compared to Midjourney, Dall-E 2 has a much easier interface and onboarding. The user simply signs up for an OpenAI account and gets access to the Dall-E 2 prompt interface, where they can type in their prompt and generate an image ( Figure A ).

Screenshot of Dall-E 2 text prompt interface.

Midjourney onboarding is a bit tricky. You will be required to sign up using a Discord account, which gives you access to a newcomer room where you can drop your image generation prompts in the public space ( Figure B ). Compared to Dall-E 2, the Midjourney prompt user interface is not intuitive enough for new users to figure out how to generate images easily. You must use the /imagine command on the Midjourney discord server to generate an image. Images are also generated based on queues in the public space; low-tier plan users may experience some delay before getting an output.

Screenshot of Midjourney’s getting started channel for new users on Discord.

Wide resolution

Generated images can only be in one of three sizes when using Dall-E 2: 256×256, 512×512 and the highest resolution of 1024×1024 pixels. Also, the price per resolution varies. Midjounrey, on the other hand, offers a wide selection of resolutions and the pricing per different resolution is the same.

Midjourney’s default resolution is 1024×1024 pixels. But Midjourney’s upscale tool can increase the file size to 2048 x 2048 or 4096 x 4096 pixels, which is three times higher than the Dall-E 2 resolution. This allows for greater detail and clarity in the generated images.

Realistic result

Midjourney and Dall-E 2 both create interesting results. With Dall-E 2, the prompt needs to be well-described to get a more realistic image ( Figure C ). But when comparing the creativity of both tools side-by-side, it can be noted that Midjourney does more creative image generation when given the same prompt as Dall-E 2.

Image of a business meeting with Boss, HR, and 3 employees.

Text-to-image generation is a basic function of both tools. Like every other product that has a specific use case, we could break down the best use cases for both Midjourney and Dall-E 2 into where they produce the best results.

PREMIUM: Explore these top artificial intelligence use cases .

Midjourney does the job better when it comes to generating creative illustrations, concept art and fan art ( Figure D ). Upscaling low-resolution images can also be achieved with Midjourney to give a better result.

Picture of MidJourney generated award-winning “Théâtre D’opéra Spatial” artwork.

By comparison, Dall-E 2 is better at generating photorealistic images for product renders or marketing materials and fine-tuning the style or composition of images.

Community support

While Dall-E 2 has a good community, when compared with Midjourney, we discover that Midjourney has a greater community than Dall-E 2. This is probably because Midjourney uses a social media channel as the gateway to delivering their services. Hence, it is much easier to find support from other users while using Midjourney.

Midjourney vs. DALL·E 3: Which image generator is better? [2024]

Hero image with the Midjourney and OpenAI logos

I've been testing both of these image generators, both professionally and personally, since they were released, and there's a lot to unpack. So let's dive in.

How do DALL·E 3 and Midjourney work?

Four images of a dog in a cloud looking more and more like a dog each time

Of course, just because both models use the same technique to generate images, doesn't mean you're going to get similar results from both DALL·E and Midjourney. How each model interprets your prompt, the weight it puts on the various parameters, the data they were trained on, and the philosophies of the companies responsible for developing them all massively affect what the output will look like.

Here's DALL·E 3's take on "an impressionist oil painting of a Canadian man riding a moose through a forest of maple trees."

DALL-E 3's images based on the prompt

And here's Midjourney's.

Midjourney's images based on the prompt

As you can see, DALL·E 3 has done a much better job of having my Canadian man riding a moose, though for my money, Midjourney's output looks way more like a real impressionist painting.

I'll dive much deeper into these kinds of differences as we go, but don't call these results a win for either AI model just yet.

DALL·E 3 vs. Midjourney at a glance

DALL·E 3 and Midjourney both do similar things, but there are some big differences. Here's a short summary of the major distinctions, but read on for a more detailed breakdown.

DALL·E 3 is easier to use

DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT producing two pictures of a wolf running through the woods

So really, if you're looking to just try out an image generator, DALL·E 3 is much simpler to get started with.

Midjourney is a lot more powerful

Creating tiles in Midjourney

You can even use another image as a character reference (it will try to recreate the characters in it) or a style reference (it will try to match the style of the image). Both make it possible to create consistent images, which is something that AI image generators generally struggle to do.

And then there are the tools that allow you to upscale, vary, and edit your images. Once you've run a prompt, you're presented with two sets of four buttons: U1 , U2 , U3 , and U4 , which upscale the corresponding image to 1024px wide, and V1 , V2 , V3, and V4 , which rerun your prompt to create more variations based on the corresponding image.

Upscaling and rerunning options in Midjourney

Once you upscale an image, you can upscale it again to 2048px wide—or even to 4096px wide using the Upscale (2x) or Upscale (4x) buttons. You can create more variations that either closely match the starting image with Vary (Subtle) or are more distinct with Vary (Strong) . You can even change specific parts of the image using Vary (Region) .

Editing just a part of an image in Midjourney

DALL·E 3 doesn't come close to matching this feature set, though its editing options have improved significantly since it first launched. Your first option is to ask ChatGPT to rerun a slightly different prompt with the changes you want made—which can be hit or miss.

DALL-E 3 changing the image completely when asked to edit

Alternatively, you can use a select tool to edit specific areas of an image with a new prompt.

Highlighting an area of an image in DALL-E

Neither option really gives you the level of control that Midjourney gives you, though they're nice to have and easy to use—especially if you don't have a super specific end result in mind.

Even the Bing tools that use DALL·E 3 don't give you many more options. The only ones of note are that Image Creator allows you to import your image directly into Microsoft Designer, and Paint allows you to generate images in the app, so you can edit them (or at least paint over the top).

Both make great AI-generated images

For all that, both DALL·E 3 and Midjourney are capable of creating incredible images. DALL·E 3 is quicker and easier to use, but you have less control over the results. Midjourney is a bit obtuse at times, but you have a lot more control over what things look like.

Still, there are a handful of differences worth noting. DALL·E 3, since it integrates with ChatGPT, does a really great job at interpreting prompts. It feels better able to handle both shorter prompts and longer, more complicated prompts.

It's not that Midjourney messes up very often, but it takes a lot more steering. I found that instead of writing long descriptions, it was more effective to give it a series of key words.

Using lists of key words to prompt in Midjourney

Also, because it has decent editing tools, I was much more willing to accept a less-than-ideal first image and then use remixing, variations, and the other tools to create a final image I was happy with.

Pricing depends on your needs

DALL·E 3's pricing is super simple: it costs $20/month as part of ChatGPT Plus, or it's available for free as part of different Microsoft tools, though some of them will watermark your images. As of now, it seems that you're limited to the same 40 requests every three hours with DALL·E 3 as you get with GPT-4, but that should be sufficient for almost everyone.

Midjourney has no free option, but the Basic Plan starts at $10/month and entitles you to 200 minutes of GPU time. Which, of course, is where things get complicated. Midjourney says that's good for roughly 200 generations a month, but it totally depends on what you're getting it to do. If you create lots of variations and upscale them all to the maximum amount, you'll burn through those GPU hours faster than if you create lots of low-res images.

Midjourney pricing

And to make things more complicated, starting with the $30/month Standard plan, you get more fast GPU hours, but you can generate unlimited images in Relax mode—which only runs when there's free GPU power.

Given all the extra features both apps bring, I'm incredibly reluctant to make any judgments between DALL·E 3 and Midjourney based on price. If it meets your needs, the $10/month Midjourney plan is probably the best balance of features and price, but you can use DALL·E 3 for free through the Bing Image Creator, or for $20/month as part of ChatGPT Plus—which also has all of ChatGPT's language generation features.

Commercial use is complicated

Midjourney is weird.

Because I've been trying to compare DALL·E 3 and Midjourney as closely and sensibly as possible, there are other weird and awkward bits with Midjourney that I haven't been able to touch on. Three of the bigger things to note are:

Unless you're on the $60/month Pro plan and activate Stealth Mode, all your images are automatically published to Midjourney's member gallery, where anyone can see them, download them, and copy your prompts.

Every setting and feature is handled through commands to the Discord bot. It will never not be strange.

You can automate DALL·E

DALL·E vs. Midjourney: Which should you use?

The choice between DALL·E 3 and Midjourney should be relatively straightforward for most people:

If you want the best AI image generator currently available, want to be able to tweak and edit your images, and are happy to work through its many quirks, Midjourney is a great choice.

If you want the easy option that reliably produces great results, DALL·E 3 is what you need.

Stable Diffusion vs Midjourney vs DALL•E 2

mid journey vs dalle 2

Jan 24, 2023

Amidst the ongoing generative ai storm, three text-to-image models have stood out: stable diffusion, midjourney, and dall-e-2..

Let's keep this super short. You're here to figure out which one is best for your workflow — we'll give you just that.

Stable Diffusion

If you’re looking for an open-source image generator, Stable Diffusion is the only option of the three at this time. You can run SD locally on your computer, meaning you have more control, better customization, and can even build AI tools of your own using their deep learning text-to-image model.

Because it is open source, a lot of tools/companies have emerged that allow you to access Stable Diffusion directly from your web browser. We'll use Lexica in this note because it has a search aggregator and generator built in!

Steps to generate

Go to lexica.art and create an account if you don't already have one.

Enter a prompt for what you want to create in the “Describe your image” box.

(optional) Enter negative prompts for things you don't want to see in your image.

That's it. Seriously.

mid journey vs dalle 2

What Stable Diffusion is great for

Since Stable Diffusion is open source and allows for some pretty intense customization, you can train it with your very own model and push the limits of your imagination. Lexica has done just that with their own 'Aperture' model. If you're curious about how to train your own model, check out this project:

Build your own AI Avatar generator w/ Stable Diffusion

8,232 building

Stable Diffusion is also really great if you're on a price crunch. There are many, many ways to access SD for free (search 'SD Replicate' to get immediate options).

Some of the custom models (like Aperture) also blow away the rest of the competing AI-generation tools since they are specifically trained on humans and stock images. Check out the image below for example:

Manju Warier, An astronaut in a garden on a spring day, by martine johanna and simon stalenhag and chie yoshii and casey weldon and wlop : : ornate, dynamic, particulate, rich colors, intricate, elegant, highly detailed, harper's bazaar art, fashion magazine, smooth, sharp focus, 8 k, octane render

mid journey vs dalle 2

Absolutely insane.

It's your turn!

Try creating your own stable diffusion image by visiting lexica.art and trying out any prompt that comes to mind!

Midjourney isn't open-source like Stable Diffusion, but it is still magical, especially for more artistic images. It shines in generation of images that are similar to those created by an artist.

Join the MJ Discord: https://discord.gg/midjourney

Once you join the discord, it will ask you a few questions to verify yourself.

Read the #getting-started channel if you want to learn more directly from Midjourney about their features.

Visit ANY of the #newbies channels.

Type /imagine in the chat text box at the bottom, followed by your prompt.

Press Enter on your keyboard and watch your prompt come to life!

This is the equivalent of a "free version". You can use it to test out whether the Midjourney style suits your taste. You can also view some of the incredible generations by other people in the community.

mid journey vs dalle 2

Midjourney prompts need a little bit of different engineering than those for Stable Diffusion. The best way to learn this is by just trying a bunch of stuff to see how you can fine-tune images to get exactly what you want. Let's try the same prompt from earlier:

Manju warier , An astronaut in a garden on a spring day, by martine johanna and simon stalenhag and chie yoshii and casey weldon and wlop : : ornate, dynamic, particulate, rich colors, intricate, elegant, highly detailed, harper's bazaar art, fashion magazine, smooth, sharp focus, 8 k, octane render

mid journey vs dalle 2

This may not look that great compared to the Stable Diffusion one above, but you can keep trying different variations and prompt changes till you find something that fits your boat.

All in all, Midjourney is fantastic for beginners because even its most advanced features are very easy to use. The Discord server comes with a lot of instructions, support, and settings that are easy to access and understand. The pricing for more generations is also extremely affordable (starts at $8/month).

Join the Midjourney discord and create an image. Once you do that, click this link to share!

Like Midjourney, Dall-E-2 isn't open source, but it does have an API. You can immediately start playing around with it and see how the generations differ from Stable Diffusion and Midjourney.

Visit https://labs.openai.com/ and create an account if you don't already have one.

Type your prompt in the text box.

Press “Generate” or optionally, press “Surprise me”.

Let's repeat the same prompt we have used for SD and MJ.

mid journey vs dalle 2

As you can see, the results aren't that great. But we can finetune the prompt and try again. However, artistic renderings aren't Dall-E's strong suit. It lacks in terms of customization and advanced features but the pricing is very affordable! Although, on a per-image basis it can be slightly more difficult to keep track of.

mid journey vs dalle 2

What it is really, really good at is photorealism. And the prompts tend to not be as complicated 😁. Let's try something extremely simple.

mid journey vs dalle 2

Let's try the same prompt in Midjourney.

mid journey vs dalle 2

And now, Stable Diffusion.

mid journey vs dalle 2

As you can see, Dall-E-2 has the best generation out of the three when it comes to photorealistic images and succinct prompts. Not to say you can't get similar results with Stable Diffusion or MidJourney, you'll just need to learn a bit about prompt engineering. Here's a good note to learn about it:

5 Ways Generative AI Is Already Ruining Social Media

I tried macro photography with my smartphone: here are my best shots, everything i wish i’d known about vpns before i started using them.

AI art generators continue to impress, allowing us to create just about anything we can imagine. However, the tech seems to have hit a brick wall when it comes to generating realistic-looking hands.

Here, we look at two of the leading generative art apps and pit them head-to-head—or hand-to-hand—to see which can generate better hands, Midjourney v5 or Dall-E 2. Have either one of these apps mastered hands? Let's find out!

AI’s Problem With Hands

Since AI-generated art became widespread on the internet, there has been criticism regarding the quality of hands drawn by AI . Despite recent updates, as shown in our side-by-side comparisons, the results have not been satisfactory.

Both contenders have been improving their capabilities and the quality of their outputs with each iteration. The latest update, Version 5 of Midjourney , has shown impressive progress. However, the problem with the hands drawn by AI remains unresolved and can't be ignored.

Comparison 1: Using the Prompts "Hand" and "Hands"

Our comparisons are going to contain the exact same prompts for both Dall-E 2 and Midjourney v5. We'll design the prompts to be hand-specific instead of simply creating people to see how the hands look. We're also giving each app only one chance (roll) for every prompt.

Let's start things off with the most basic and relevant prompt: "hand".

Midjourney v5:

We're not off to a good start!

Midjourney took the unusual route of associating a hand with rather creative situations. Instead of focusing on just a hand, we see a wizard, gloves, a skeleton, and a tiny figurine. The gloves image is missing a finger too.

Dall-E 2 takes the opposite approach and offers us just a single hand against a plain background. But oddly, there are some strange postures, particularly with the thumbs, that don't look natural or comfortable. Each hand is also cut off at one of the sides of the images.

Who wins this round? We'll give it to Dall-E 2 for overall accuracy.

Now, let's make the prompt plural, "hands", and see what the AIs come up with.

Midjourney's attempt at "hands" turns out better this time around. But all four images are in black and white, and we have some missing fingers. Upon closer inspection, you can also see that some of the digits are strangely shaped or morph into one another.

Dall-E 2 continues to feature hands with a plain background. There are no missing digits, but the hands are cropped out in the third image and the other versions seem sort of clumsy in composition and lack creativity altogether.

Let's call this comparison a draw. Dall-E 2 would win for accuracy if that were the only factor, but Midjourney manages to create some beautiful imagery in its black-and-white renditions, even if all four versions aren't very realistic.

You can always use Photoshop to fix your Midjouney art , including hands.

Comparison 2: Hand Gestures

Let's compare a couple of hand gestures that are nearly universally recognized.

Fingers Crossed

First, let's try "fingers crossed".

It's safe to say that Midjourney completely botched this prompt. We're missing fingers and none of the versions look natural at all.

Hats off once again to Dall-E 2 for getting the finger count correct, but that's the only good news. Each version looks like the fingers are striking their own yoga poses in a game of Twister.

There's no winner in this comparison.

Next, we're going with "thumbs up".

Midjourney gets the finger count correct while treating each prompt in a creative fashion. Notice the introduction of an illustrative style?

Dall-E 2 also gets points for accuracy while not trying to rock the boat with anything creative added to each result.

There's no clear winner here.

Comparison 3: Hands With Objects

Now, we'll up the complexity by prompting hands to interact with objects.

Hand Holding Crystal Ball

Let's start with a random object, using the prompt "hand holding crystal ball".

As we up the complexity, Midjourney starts to shine. Apart from a couple of the renditions looking unnatural, the hands and the crystal balls look beautiful. Midjourney even takes the time to create reflections in the glass that certainly add to the overall creativity.

But for the first time, we see Dall-E 2 missing a digit in at least one of the hands, with the fourth hand looking just plain weird. The crystal balls also don't look as impressive compared to Midjourney's.

Midjourney gets its first win.

Hand Holding Water

Let's try something even more complex with the prompt "hand holding water".

Midjourney only manages to roll one image with the correct number of digits. Though beautifully rendered, once again we start to see the cracks in the believability department.

Dall-E 2 struggles with achieving natural hands as well but does a much better job. It switches up the color in the background too for some variety.

We'll give this round to Dall-E 2.

Comparison 4: Working Hands

For this comparison, we'll create prompts that have the hands involved in activities.

Hands Molding Clay

Let's see how the AI models fare with "hands molding clay".

Midjourney missed a finger in two images but everything else looks great.

Dall-E 2's images look confusing and crowded, resorting to adding another person's hands in half of the versions.

The edge goes to Midjourney.

Hands Pressing Dough

Let's try a similar activity, "hands pressing dough".

Midjourney's images look great overall. But once again, half of them have missing digits. But the images can't be faulted for their artistic styling.

Dall-E 2's versions are missing fingers as well in half of the renditions and even add one to the last hand in the set.

Let's call this one a draw.

If you'd like to try these comparisons for yourself, we show you how to use Midjourney to create AI art .

What Do the Results Tell Us?

It's fun to go do comparisons and determine an overall winner. And if we had to choose, we'd call it in favor of Midjourney v5. Although Dall-E 2 created hands with the correct number of fingers more often, it was Midjourney that crafted more artistically-rendered and appealing images.

But both apps have a place in the marketplace for artists who repurpose Dall-E 2 and Midjourney images for their work. Both are capable of creating hands that can be used as cutouts or in composites for artistic, editorial, and commercial usage. It's just a matter of personal preference.

AI Will Eventually Conquer Hands

Generative art apps like Dall-E 2 and Midjourney have come a long way in their ability to create realistic and fantastic art. They still struggle with generating hands, but given the acceleration of generative tech, we can only expect improvement in the near future.

Round 1: Midjourney vs Stable Diffusion vs DALLE-2

Founded by David Holz, Midjourney describes themselves as “an independent research lab exploring new mediums of thought and expanding the imaginative powers of the human species”.It is an interactive chat where you can send commands and prompts to an AI using Discord. It will then give you an images based on your text prompts.

Midjourney AI image generation is a relatively new generative model technique used in image generation tasks, such as image synthesis, image super-resolution, and image editing. Rather than generating a final output image with a single input, the model generates a series of intermediate images, which can ultimately refine and enhance the final output image.

This technique involves using a midjourney generator that refines the intermediate images over multiple iterations and the final output image. The midjourney generator acts on top of a coarse generator, which generates the initial random noise vectors using the diffusion process.

More about Midjourney pricing and subscription .

Pros of Midjourney

  • Higher quality images: Midjourney AI image generation produces high-quality images by refining intermediate images that progressively enhance the final output image.
  • Reduced computational requirements: The midjourney generator uses a smaller model configuration and requires lower computational resources, making it more accessible and less expensive than other generative models.
  • More control over the output: The intermediate images generated during the training process provide more control and customization of the output image, which can facilitate the production of a desired output type.
  • Enhanced flexibility: Midjourney generators can be used to modify existing images, enabling the creation of unique, custom, and original images with different patterns, textures, colors, or morphologies.
  • Better convergence: Midjourney image generation has shown better convergence properties, leading to decreased training times and faster convergence to the target output image, thus resulting in higher throughput.
  • More natural-looking images: Midjourney generators produce more realistic and natural-looking images due to the progressive refinement of intermediate images, resulting in better final output results.

Cons of Midjourney

  • More complex architecture: The architecture of Midjourney generators can be more complicated than traditional models, and it requires an understanding of the architecture to implement the model effectively.
  • Longer Training Time: Midjourney generators can have longer training times overall than traditional generative models.
  • The cost of computation may remain high: While the Midjourney generator can be configured to use fewer computational resources, the overall cost of computation can still be considerable.
  • Dependency on large datasets: Midjourney imaging involves working with large datasets for training and validation purposes. Thus, Midjourney generators are dependent on the quantity and quality of the input data available.
  • Difficulties in optimization: Midjourney image generation optimization can be difficult, making it necessary for the user to have in-depth knowledge and understanding of the architecture to optimize the algorithm performance.
  • Limited Applications: So far, Midjourney generators have been most extensively used in AI image generation tasks, which have limits when it comes to other applications for which unknown intermediate states between input and output are not well-defined.

mid journey vs dalle 2

Midjourney vs Stable Diffusion vs DALL-E summary:

The main advantage of the Midjourney is that it can produce high-quality images despite using a smaller model configuration and lower computational resources. Midjourney also offers more flexibility and customization in the training process, offering greater control over the previewing of intermediate images generated for the final output. In turn, Midjourney’s main disadvantages are related to its complexities, data, computation, and optimization requirements. However, as its potential applications expand, its advantages are being leveraged for a wide range of AI image generation applications.

Round 2: Midjourney vs Stable Diffusion vs DALLE-2

The term “stable diffusion” in AI image generation refers to a technique used to generate realistic images using the diffusion process. The diffusion process is a form of generative modeling that involves iteratively applying a diffusion algorithm to an initial random noise vector, leading to a series of updates that result in the eventual generation of a new image.

Stable diffusion is a modification of the standard diffusion-based image generation method that emphasizes producing more stable and higher quality images. As the diffusion process involves a series of stochastic updates, it can lead to image artifacts, inconsistencies, and blurriness in the final output. With stable diffusion, the diffusion algorithm is modified to incorporate a regularizing function that stabilizes update dynamics during the training process, resulting in higher quality and realistic output images.

In summary, stable diffusion is an advanced technique for generating high-quality and stable images using the diffusion process. It is used to improve the effectiveness of AI image generation models, resulting in higher quality and more consistent generated images while reducing image artifacts and inconsistencies.

Views some Stable Diffusion examples .

Pros of Stable Diffusion

  • Higher Quality Images: Stable diffusion improves the quality of generated images by reducing the occurrence of image artifacts and blur, creating more realistic-looking images.
  • High Accuracy: Stable diffusion is an excellent technique for generating high accuracy generative models, which helps in producing impressive and realistic images.
  • Improved Consistency: Stable diffusion reduces inconsistencies between generated images, leading to a more consistent and polished final output.
  • Better Handling of Large Datasets: Stable diffusion is better equipped to handle large datasets, making it an ideal choice for generating images on large-scale projects.
  • Faster Training: Stable diffusion requires fewer iterations to converge, making it faster and more efficient for generating high-quality images.
  • Greater Stability: The regularizing function incorporated into the stable diffusion algorithm stabilizes the diffusion updates, leading to better convergence for the training process.

Cons of Stable Diffusion

  • Increased Complexity: Stable Diffusion  is a more complex technique than other traditional models used for image generation, making it more demanding and requiring more computational resources.
  • Limited Flexibility: Stable Diffusion  requires specific tuning parameters during the training process, which can limit the flexibility of the model and its adaptability to different types of input data.
  • Requires Large Datasets: Stable Diffusion  requires large datasets for effective training, resulting in significant data preprocessing and curation, which can be expensive and time-consuming.
  • Possibility of Overfitting:  Stable Diffusion models may overfit to the training data, resulting in reduced performance in generating new and unseen images.
  • Computational Resource Requirements: Stable Diffusion  requires more computational resources, such as high-end GPUs, due to its complex architecture and the need for large amounts of training data.
  • Longer Training Times: Stable Diffusion  trains slower than traditional image generation methods due to its complex architecture, which can lead to longer training times.

mid journey vs dalle 2

In summary, Stable Diffusion has advantages and disadvantages. Several advantages include: producing higher quality images with greater stability, faster training and handling of large datasets, improved consistency, and high accuracy. These benefits make it a valuable technique for improving AI image generation models. However, while Stable Diffusion can improve the quality of generated images, it requires careful tuning, large datasets, and more powerful computational resources. Thus, practitioners must weigh and balance these factors while considering using Stable Diffusion or more traditional techniques while generating AI images.

Round 3: Midjourney vs Stable Diffusion vs DALLE-2

DALL-E 2 refers to an improved version of DALL-E, an AI language model developed by OpenAI in January 2021. DALL-E is a generative image-based application using the transformer architecture with the capacity to create photorealistic images given natural language text descriptions.

DALL-E 2 has enhanced capability compared to its predecessor model, with the ability to perform advanced image manipulations, such as moving, rotating, and flipping objects within the image. DALL-E 2 generates new images based on the text inputs, having better natural text understanding and a broader range of vocabularies for image description.

DALL-E 2 works by taking in natural language text as input and uses the transformers within the generative model to produce corresponding output images. The model visualizes the natural language descriptions via masking, an image pixel detection method involving modifying the design image to match the sentence input.

Receive detailed information on   DALL-E 2 .

Pros of DALL-E 2

  • Improved Natural Language Understanding: DALL-E 2 is an improved version of DALL-E, with better natural language understanding capabilities based on the transformer architecture, making it ideal for generating high-quality images from text inputs.
  • Advanced Image Manipulation: DALL-E 2 can perform advanced image manipulations such as moving, rotating, and flipping objects in the image, providing greater flexibility and customization of output visualizations.
  • Image Customization: The DALL-E 2 model can create highly customized outputs, such as customizing patterns, designs, and shapes for objects, reflecting diverse user preferences and user-specific design use cases.
  • Consistency of Output: DALL-E 2 generates consistent image outputs from a given natural language input, making it ideal for generating repeatable marketing or advertising material for businesses.
  • Bi-Directional Generation: DALL-E 2 can produce images for inputs and descriptions of images, and conversely texts for a given image, thus enabling bidirectional generation.
  • Extensive Vocabulary: DALL-E 2 has an extensive vocabulary suitable for generating images from a broad range of topics and descriptions, leading to greater versatility in generative applications.

Cons of DALL-E 2

  • Limited Realism: Although DALL-E 2 generates high-quality images, there may be a limit to how realistic those images are when compared to real-life images. This limitation can constrain the application of  constructed Dall-E images for detailed pronouncements.
  • Resource Management: DALL-E 2 requires advanced and more powerful computational resources to generate highly complex images, making it less accessible to individuals and businesses without the necessary resources to sustain it.
  • Text Input Requirement: The image generation output by DALL-E 2 is reliant on the quality of the natural language input, limiting the scope of the image generation to getting a proper text description only.
  • Quality of Input Text: DALL-E 2 requires not only adequate text input but has to be detailed and well-structured to produce highly accurate and quality output images.
  • Limited Applications: As DALL-E 2 is specifically programmed for generating photorealistic images from text descriptions, its scope of application is limited to specific use-cases like image or video production, marketing, and advertising, where complex, customized, and realistic images can have significant applications.

mid journey vs dalle 2

Overall, DALL-E 2 has clear advantages, including improved natural language understanding, advanced customization, consistency of output, bi-directional generation, and extensive vocabulary. These benefits make DALL-E 2 an ideal tool for designers, advertisers, and creatives looking to generate high-quality images from text descriptions and tailor designs to specific user needs. In turn, some disadvantages include the requirement of more powerful resources, the dependence on the quality and structure of the input text, the management of already created images, the limited scope of applications, and the limited realism potential.

Midjourney vs Stable Diffusion vs DALL-E 2: Who is the Winner?

It is difficult to declare an outright “best technique” between Midjourney vs Stable Diffusion vs DALL-E 2 as their use cases can vary based on specific applications, data availability, computational resources, and expected output quality.

  • Midjourney is useful in customizing output and providing more control over the generation process. It is computationally efficient and improves convergence times while producing more natural-looking images. Midjourney image generation is particularly useful in generating high-quality images while using limited computational resources, making it an excellent choice in design and video-based applications.
  • Stable Diffusion , on the other hand, is useful in generating high-quality and stable images while reducing inconsistencies and artifacts in the images. The regularization function incorporated in Stable Diffusion stabilizes update dynamics during the training process, leading to higher final output quality. Stable Diffusion is well suited for generating AI images in healthcare, food, inventory management, supply chains or environmental sustainability applications.
  • DALL-E 2 specializes in the generation of photorealistic images from natural language text, providing advanced image manipulation and customization capabilities with extensive vocabulary. DALL-E 2 is an excellent choice where customized images, adherence to specific market/industry standards, and real-life like images potentially have high orientation.

While all three techniques have their advantages and limitations, practitioners are expected to select based on their data nature, computational resources, specific applications, outputs’ desired quality, training time, and the technical know-how required to use the techniques effectively.

Frequently asked questions:

Is dall-e 2 better than stable diffusion.

DALL-E 2 and Stable Diffusion serve different purposes in AI image generation. Stable Diffusion is a technique that emphasizes stability and the reduction of artifacts during the image generation process, while DALL-E 2 is an AI language model for generating photorealistic images from natural language text.

Comparing the two techniques directly isn’t straightforward as they tackle specific use cases in generating images. They both have advantages and disadvantages, with DALL-E 2 having a more significant focus on customization capability, advanced image manipulation, and the ability to use natural language text as input, while Stable Diffusion focuses on generating high-quality and stable images with fewer artifacts.

Is Midjourney or Stable Diffusion better?

Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are both generative models that are useful in AI image generation, but they are utilized for different purposes. Stable Diffusion is focused on generating high-quality and stable images while reducing artifacts, while Midjourney is designed to provide more control and customization over the image generation process.

As such, there is no straightforward “better” technique between Midjourney and Stable Diffusion as their functional purposes differ. Midjourney image generation is more efficient with computational power, requires less data to generate high-quality outputs, and enables customization of image generation output. Stable Diffusion, on the other hand, produces stable and high-quality images by applying regularization functions to the diffusion updates, facilitating a higher-quality output.

What is the difference between DALL-E 2 and Midjourney?

DALL-E 2 is an AI language model that generates photorealistic images from natural language text descriptions; its generative capabilities focus on creating highly customized and realistic images with natural language input. DALL-E 2 focuses intimately on the language aspect and relies on extensive vocabulary to generate high-quality outputs in compliance with text input requirements.

Midjourney, on the other hand, is used to provide intermediate images during the image generation process in AI image generation tasks. Its particular advantage comes in the level of control one has over the image generation process. Midjourney enables efficient customization of generated images, with intermediate images progressively enhancing the final output simultaneously put together.

In summary, the primary difference between DALL-E 2 and Midjourney is the technique used to generate images. DALL-E 2 simulations rely on natural language text descriptions, while Midjourney generates intermediate images to increase control and customization options during image production. Consequently, they are useful for different use cases, with DALL-E 2 being effective in producing photorealistic images from natural language, and Midjourney being used when more control over the image generation process is necessary.

Is Midjourney based on Stable Diffusion?

Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are two different generative modeling techniques.

Midjourney is a technique that generates intermediate images during the image generation process while providing more control and customization options within the image generating process. Midjourney models can function on top of the stable diffusion process, using diffusion models to generate intermediate images. However, Midjourney can also be used in conjunction with other generative models.

Stable Diffusion, on the other hand, is a generative modeling technique that produces high-quality, stable images while reducing artifacts during the creation process. Stable Diffusion models use a diffusion process that gradually adds Gaussian noise to an image and then removes it, allowing the model to generate complex distributions. Because intermediate images are not created during the image generation process in Stable Diffusion, the technique does not directly affect Midjourney modeling.

What is the future of AI?

AI art

Definitely, there are many reasons to be optimistic about the future of AI . First, the rapid pace of progress in AI technology is showing no signs of slowing down. Second, AI is increasingly being operated in a variety of industries and applications, which is only increasing its impact on our lives. Finally, the potential for AI to positively impact humanity is immense. Then, what can we expect from AI in the future? Read more about it here.

How does AI Image generator works?

As previously noted, Artificial Intelligence image generators are computer programs that create new images. To create an AI image generator, one must first design a “generative model” of how images are created, which is based on a set of rules defining how the basic elements of an image can be combined. After the generative model is complete, it can generate new images. There are two main types of AI-image generators: those that produce “photorealistic” images, and those that create “abstract” or “stylized” ones.

  • AI Art , Generative AI

picture of Stable Diffusion vs Midjourney vs Dall-E 2 Comparison Test

AI art generators have come a long way in recent years, and it’s now possible to create some truly stunning pieces of art using them.

In this blog post, we’ll be comparing three different AI art generators – Dall-E 2, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion – to see which one produces the best results of these 3 Generative AI applications .

We’ll be running the same three prompts through all of them and seeing which one comes out on top. So let’s get started!

Also check out my newest comparison test between Midjourney V4 and Stable Diffusion 2.0 .

Read more, or watch the YouTube video:

Comparing 3 Different AI Art Generators

In this test we will compare results from the 3 most popular AI Art generators. Stable Diffusion, Midjoruney and Dall-E 2. Here is a bit of information about each generator:

Stable Diffusion

Stable Diffusion is a text-to-image model that gradually builds a coherent image from a noise vector by gradually modifying it over a number of steps.

The model was trained using the LAION Aesthetics dataset, a subset of the LAION 5B dataset, containing 120 million image-text pairs from the complete set which contains nearly 6 billion image-text pairs.

Stable Diffusion reportedly runs on less than 10 GB of VRAM at inference time, generating 512×512 images in just a few seconds, meaning running on consumer GPUs is an option.

The Stable Diffusion model is best for digital art design and very creative and abstract drawings. Overall, it’s much faster and more efficient than DALL·E. First of all, the carbon footprint is smaller.

Second, this model can be used by anyone with a 10 gig graphics card. It can be run in a few seconds, and doesn’t require as much hardware. Stable Diffusion is open source. This means that anyone can view and modify the source code for the software. Additionally, open source software is typically free to use.

Image

Midjourney is a new AI-powered tool that can turn any text into a piece of artwork. The resulting art from Midjourney is unique and can be quite breathtaking. The company behind Midjourney is a research lab that explores new ways of thinking and expands the imaginative powers of the human species.

How does Midjourney work?

Midjourney works by inputting a text prompt into a text encoder. This text encoder is trained to map the prompt to a representation space. Next, a model called the prior maps the text encoding to a corresponding image encoding that captures the semantic information of the prompt contained in the text encoding.

Finally, an image decoder stochastically generates an image which is a visual manifestation of this semantic information.

In other words, Midjourney takes a text prompt and uses it to generate an image .

Is Midjourney free?

Yes, Midjourney AI has a free tier that allows users to generate 25 images. After that, users must subscribe to one of two paid plans in order to continue using the service.

DALL-E 2 is a computer program created by OpenAI that uses artificial intelligence to generate images from text descriptions. It is the successor to the original DALL-E program, which was first introduced in 2014.

The program works by first recognizing specific aspects of an image from a text description, and then gradually altering a pattern of random dots to create the image. The program is also able to make edits to existing images, and create new images based on the original.

Finally, the program is also able to create different variations of an image, inspired by the original. DALL-E 2 is a significant improvement over its predecessor, as it is able to generate 4x better resolution images than DALL-E.

Additionally, the program has been designed to prevent the generation of harmful images, such as those depicting violence, hate, or nudity.

Stable Diffusion vs Midjourney vs Dall-E 2 Comparison Test

This is the results of the comparison test between Stable Diffusion, Midjourney and Dall-E 2.

Of course these results are just based on my opinion, so there is a lot of room for interpretation here.

But let’s just have a look at the results and leave a comment if you would have picked something else.

The first comparison test between Stable Diffusion, Midjourney and Dall-E 2 was a portrait image of a young woman. The prompt I used to create these AI art images was:

portrait of a pretty young woman, blue eyes, make-up, dark , soft light, cinematic, 8k

picture of dall-e 2 stable diffusion and midjourney

My conclusion of test 1:

Left: Midjoruney

Middle: Dall-E 2

Right: Stable Diffusion

I found the portrait images to be of excellent quality overall. I was most impressed with the portrait generated by Dall-E 2, which I thought looked very realistic and symmetrical. I also liked the hair and eyes in this image.

The portrait from Stable diffusion was also very good, although I did not like the eyes as much. I thought the Midjourney portrait was good as well, but I did not like the eyes in this one either.

So that’s one point for Dall-E 2.

The second comparison test between Stable Diffusion, Midjourney and Dall-E 2 was a landscape image of a Norwegian fishing cabin. The prompt I used to create these AI art images was:

a Beautiful riverside fishing cabin in Norway, Cottagecore, Cottage, Lodge, Hyperdetailed, Autumn, stunning natural scenery, forest, Landscape, cinematic lighting, raking sunlight, sunrise, glade, intricate detail, picturesque, lovely, optics, shadows, storybook illustration

picture of dall-e 2 stable diffusion and midjourney

My conclusion of test 2:

Left: Dall-E 2

Middle: Stable Diffusion

Right: Midjourney

I found the landscape images to be of excellent quality overall. I was most impressed with the landscape generated by Dall-E 2, which I thought captured the feeling of a cabin in Norway perfectly.

I did like the mountains in the background of the Midjoruney image. The landscape from Stable diffusion was also very good, although I thought it was a bit too realistic. I liked the Midjourney cabin style as well, but I thought it was a bit too busy.

So quite an easy win again from Dall-E 2.

The third comparison test between Stable Diffusion, Midjourney and Dall-E 2 was an oil painting image of a Unicorn running on fluffy clouds. The prompt I used to create these AI art images was:

Unicorn running through fluffy clouds, dynamic, movement, beautiful oil painting, fine art, award-winning art, beautiful lighting, intricate detail

picture of dall-e 2 stable diffusion and midjourney

My conclusion of test 3:

Left: Stable Diffusion

I found the unicorn images to be a bit lower quality overall, compared to the other two categories. I was most impressed with the unicorn generated by Stable diffusion, which I thought looked very realistic. I also liked the colors in this image.

The unicorn from Midjourney was also good, although I thought the horns were a bit weird. I liked the Dall-E 2 unicorn as well, it had the best body proportions and wings. But I found it a bit boring.

So the winner here was Stable Diffusion.

Overall, I thought that Dall-E 2 produced the best results in this comparison test. I was most impressed with the images it generated in the portrait and landscape categories.

In terms of speed and efficiency, Stable Diffusion was the best AI art generator. Midjourney did not win any of the tests, but I performed well in all categories.

So my conclusion is that all of these AI Art generators are good choices, it is just down to your personal preference and what you’re looking for.

Comparing Craiyon, DALL-E 2, and Midjourney

I thought I’d add photos from three AI image generators; Craiyon , DALL-E 2 and Midjourney .

How they describe themselves;

  • “Craiyon, formerly DALL·E mini, is an AI model that can draw images from any text prompt!”
  • “DALL·E 2 is a new AI system that can create realistic images and art from a description in natural language.
  • “ Midjourney is an independent research lab exploring new mediums of thought and expanding the imaginative powers of the human species.”

My relatively uninformed opinions of them;

  • Craiyon is good for funny and topical images, but images lack detail.
  • DALL-E 2 can create some almost photo-realistic images, but can lack artistic imagination.
  • Midjourney creates stunning images that lean towards fantasy art rather than the real world.

In this post I just wanted to share some examples of the images produced by these three.

Photoshop vs. Midjourney vs. DALL-E 3: Only one AI image generator passed my 5 tests

david-gewirtz

Photoshop AI prompt: Laptop computer in a steampunk world (Steampunk effect)

Adobe's AI announcements this week were pretty significant, especially the AI-based generative vector features in Illustrator. Photoshop has had a slew of small improvements, but nothing as recently game-changing as the generative fill feature announced at the beginning of the year.

That said, Adobe just announced that Photoshop can now generate an image given a blank canvas, putting it in the same category as text-to-image generators like Midjourney and DALL-E 3 . To that end, I wondered how Photoshop's text-to-image feature compares to the others, especially in terms of creativity.

Also: Adobe Illustrator's new generative vector fill is game-changing (even if you can't draw)

So that's what I'm doing in this article. I'm feeding the same prompt to Photoshop, Midjourney, and DALL-E inside ChatGPT using GPT-4o . I'm not adding any of the styling options each tool offers, except in the case of one test where I ask for "dieselpunk style" in the body of the prompt.

Which tool produces the better art? You'll have to be the judge of that. Let's get started. To see any image bigger, click the little square icon in the upper right corner.

Test 1: Helicarrier

The first image that came to mind was the helicarrier from Marvel's comics and movies. This is an aircraft carrier improbably held aloft by turbofan engines. The physics is questionable, but the cool factor is off the rails.

Here's the prompt:

Aircraft carrier flying in the sky, held up by four upward-facing turbo-propellors in round fan housings, carrying a squadron of fighter jets on its deck

For each of these tests, I'll show you what I think were the best images from all three AIs side-by-side so you can compare them.

Here's what we got:

As you can see, Photoshop missed the boat. Literally. Its knowledge base probably doesn't understand what an aircraft carrier is. If you look closely, the bombs do look like they have little propellors on them, though.

Midjourney generated a good helicarrier-looking craft, but didn't include any of the turbofans. DALL-E did, but even though I specified "upward-facing," it clearly didn't know what to do with them, so it just sprinkled them throughout the image.

Also: The best AI image generators of 2024: Tested and reviewed

Midjourney always creates four images, so for each of the tests, I picked the one I thought was the best and used that for comparison.

I decided to go back to Photoshop and turn on one of its styling options, Steampunk. As you can see, Photoshop produced a much more interesting image. It's not exactly an aircraft carrier, but it does have a conning tower. And if you look below, that area might be where jets are stored. I'm not sure, but it's definitely a much more fun image.

Text-to-image success rating:

  • Understood overall spirit of prompt: Midjourney and DALL-E
  • Included all the details specified: DALL-E

Test 2: Giant dieselpunk robot

Wikipedia defines "dieselpunk" as "a retrofuturistic subgenre of science fiction similar to steampunk or cyberpunk that combines the aesthetics of the diesel-based technology of the interwar period through to the 1950s with retro-futuristic technology and postmodern sensibilities."

If steampunk is all about the Victorian age with steam engines and gears, the dieselpunk era is 1940s and 1950s with the chunky diesel-fueled technology of the time.

In any case, I fed the AIs this prompt:

A colossal robot standing as the protector of a glorious city, with citizens bustling around and commuting to work, done in dieselpunk style

To be fair, all three AI tools did a really great job:

Photoshop clearly understood the assignment. Midjourney's image was the closest to what I had in my head when I issued the prompt, but the robot doesn't look like a guardian. It also doesn't look like a threat, since people are just milling about.

Also: How to selectively modify a Midjourney image to create an artistic statement

The DALL-E version, with the robot in front of the city, fits in more with the guardian idea. There's a bit of a question about whether it confused steampunk with dieselpunk because of the steam engines. Steam engines generally went out of service in the 1930s, but they were still running on some lines as late as 1960, which would mean they could coexist in the dieselpunk era. The people are dressed for dieselpunk rather than steampunk, and the buses in front are clearly dieselpunk rather than steampunk.

  • Understood overall spirit of prompt: All three, but possibly DALL-E a bit more
  • Included all the details specified: All three

Test 3: A Kid in King Arthur's Court

One of the things that happens when you write an article like this is you cast about for ideas for test cases. I was thinking it would be interesting to see how the AIs did with juxtaposed time periods, since they did fairly well with the dieselpunk era in representing the citizens.

Also: How to use ChatGPT to digitize your handwritten notes for free

I happen to be a fan of alternate history and time travel, so as I thought of this, my mind went to a little film from the mid-1990s that dropped a Little League player into medieval times (the era, not the restaurant). That movie was A Kid in King Arthur's Court . It's not a classic by any means, but it was a fun movie. And so, that gave us this prompt:

A young teenage boy, wearing a modern Yankees-style baseball uniform with hat and mitt, stands in the bustling center of a medieval court with citizens and knights in armor

Here's what the AIs produced:

The Photoshop image was the most realistic. It could well have been taken of a real kid on a movie set. Unfortunately (but probably predictably because of Adobe's licensed-only media library), the kid was not in a Yankees uniform. That said, the AI did a masterful job of including baseball-style cues in the costume it gave the kid.

Also: How Adobe manages AI ethics concerns while fostering creativity

Midjourney created the most cohesive-looking image, although the kid looks as unhappy as a kid might look if he suddenly landed in King Arthur's era. The other images showed kids looking even worse, as if they'd been in medieval Europe as long as Martin Padway had been in L. Sprague de Camp's Lest Darkness Fall book series.

DALL-E was the least impressive. It did meet the spec, but the image has a very uncanny valley feel about it that the other two images did not.

  • Understood overall spirit of prompt: All three
  • Included all the details specified: Midjourney and DALL-E

And now that we're done being inspired by our inner Mark Twain, let's move on back…to the future.

Test 4: Back to the Future

Another issue I had in constructing tests for this was the need to use references that I could be sure everyone would understand. There are a bunch of great contemporary movies, even in science fiction, but I'm not sure we all have the same frame of reference.

Also:  How I used ChatGPT and AI art tools to launch my Etsy business fast

But by channeling these old classics through the AI, I can be pretty sure most of our readers know what to look for and what to expect. That, of course, brings us to Back to the Future. This time, I wanted to give the AI a movie title and see what it did with it. Here's the prompt:

Create an image that represents the movie "Back to the Future", include themes of the 1950s, the DeLorean time machine car, and the boy with a skateboard

Photoshop… I mean, what can you say? The kid popping out of the windshield of a car is a little disturbing. Again, the licensing-limited nature of the Adobe Firefly knowledge base held back the image generation, but the AI did try to include something of the 1950s feel. Here are the other two Photoshop images:

Midjourney did an amazing job with all four of its images, although the first one missed the car:

DALL-E put up a fight. Even though, in a previous test , DALL-E was perfectly happy using copyrighted content, this time it just said no. When I fed it the above prompt, DALL-E in ChatGPT responded with:

I was unable to generate the image as requested due to content policy restrictions. Please let me know if you have an alternative prompt or if there are any adjustments you'd like to make.

I asked ChatGPT:

Rewrite the prompt so it reflects as much of the intent as possible without violating policy restrictions

ChatGPT did not give me back a new prompt, but it did give me the image I showed above, which is very close to the intent of the project.

  • Understood overall spirit of prompt: Midjourney, with DALL-E getting honorable mention
  • Included all the details specified: Midjourney, again with DALL-E getting honorable mention

Test 5: ZDNET's motto

ZDNET's motto is "Tomorrow belongs to those who embrace it today." You see it at the top of every page:

I wondered what the AIs would do with it, and so I fed that phrase to each of them. Here's what came back out:

So, Photoshop bodars the emieragge tiday, you know? What is there to say to that? Midjourney, on the other hand, created a very interesting and pretty image. It does have the feel of ZDNET's motto, even if the image itself is hard to describe. And, despite a very minor lettering issue, DALL-E did a fine job of representing the future and its possibilities.

  • Included all the details specified: Midjourney and DALL-E both produced an image with the feelings the motto conveys
  • Went to a dark place nobody understands: Photoshop

Which AI wins?

Unfortunately, it's not Photoshop. Photoshop mostly succeeded on two of the five tests, but pretty much failed the others. Midjourney was the most consistently successful, but DALL-E came pretty close.

Also: I asked DALL-E 3 to create a portrait of every US state, and the results were gloriously strange

The thing about Photoshop is that while Photoshop's text-to-image isn't all that great, Photoshop has the very best generative fill capability of any of the AIs. I'm still very likely to create images in Midjourney (and sometimes DALL-E), and then bring them into Photoshop for a generative fill touch-up.

Flux vs Midjourney: which AI image generator wins?

Creating hyperrealistic images

AI generated images of a street musician with a guitar created by Flux and Midjourney

1. A chef in the kitchen

2. a street musician, 3. the gardener, 4. paramedic in an emergency, 5. the retired astronaut.

Flux is an artificial intelligence image generator released by AI startup Black Forest Labs in the past few weeks and it has quickly become one of the most powerful and popular tools of its kind, even giving market leader Midjourney a run for its money.

Unlike Midjourney , which is a closed and paid-for service only available from Midjourney itself, Flux is an open-source model available to download and run locally or on a range of platforms such as Freepik, NightCafe and Hugging Face.

To determine whether Flux has reached Midjourney levels of photorealism and accurate human depiction I’ve come up with 5 descriptive prompts and run them on both. I’m generating Flux images using ComfyUI installed through the Pinokio AI installer .

Creating the prompts

Both Midjourney and Flux benefit from a descriptive prompt. To get exactly what you want out of the model its good to describe not just the person but also the style, lighting and structure.

I’ve included each prompt below for you to try yourself and these should also work with Ideogram, DALL-E 3 in ChatGPT or other AI image platforms if you don’t have Midjourney or Flux but, except Ideogram, none reach the realism of Midjourney or Flux.

Midjourney

The first test combines the need to generate a complex skin texture with a dynamic environment — namely a professional kitchen. The prompt asks for a woman in her mid-50s in the middle of preparing a meal.

It also asks for the depiction of sous chefs in the background and for the chef's name to be shown on a "spotless white double-breasted chef's jacket".

Winner : Midjourney Midjourney wins for the realism of the main character. It isn't perfect and I prefer the dynamism of the Flux image but the challenge is creating accurate humans and Midjourney is closer with better skin texture.

Midjourney

The next prompt asks both AI image generators to show a street musician in his late 30s performing on a busy city corner lost in the moment of the music.

Part of the prompt requires the inclusion of an appreciative passerby, coins in a guitar case and city life blurring in motion behind the main character.

Winner: Midjourney Midjourney wins again for the realism of the character. The texture quality of v6.1 once again puts it just ahead. It is also overall a better image in terms of structure, layout and background.

Midjourney

Generating images of older people can always be a struggle for AI image generators because of the more complex skin texture. Here we want a woman in her 80s caring for plants in a rooftop garden.

The image depicts elements of the scene including climbing vines and a golden evening light with the city skyline looming large behind our gardener.

Winner : Midjourney Once again Midjourney wins because of the texture quality. It struggled a little with the gloved fingers but it was better than Flux. That doesn't mean Flux isn't a good image but it isn't as good as Midjourney.

Midjourney

For this prompt I went with something more action heavy, focusing on a paramedic in the moment of rushing to the ambulance on a rainy day. This included a description of water droplets clinging to eyelashes and reflective strips.

This was a more challenging prompt for AI image generators as it has to capture the darker environment. 'Golden hour' light is easier for AI than night and twilight.

Winner : Draw I don't think either AI image generator won this round. Both have washed out and over 'plastic' face textures likely caused by the lighting issues. Midjourney does a slightly better job matching the description of the scene.

Midjourney

Finally we have a scene in a school. Here I've asked the AI models to generate a retired astronaut in his late 60s giving a presentation about space.

He is well presented in good health depicting a NASA logo. The background is well described with posters, quotes and people watching as he speaks.

Winner: Flux I am giving this one to Flux. It won because it had skin texture and human realism on par or slightly better than Midjourney but with a much better overall image structure including more realistic background people.

Flux vs Midjourney: Which model wins

This was almost a clean sweep for Midjourney and it was mainly driven by the improvements Midjourney has made in skin texture rendering with v6.1.

I don't think it was as clear as it looks on paper though as in many images Flux had a better overall image structure and was better at backgrounds. I've also found Flux is more consistent with text rendering than Midjourney — but this test was about people and creating realistic digital humans.

What it does show is that even at the bleeding edge of AI image generation there are still tells in every image that sell it as AI generated.
