Useful tips for safari in Jim Corbett National Park
There are some things one must keep in mind while having safari in Jim Corbett National Park. Or, for that matter, any national park.
- Don’t make noise as it agitates the animals. Or, they might get over cautious and hide out of sight.
- Wear neutral color cloths that helps you blend with the surroundings. If it is difficult to spot you, the animals will have their guards down. And chances of spotting them increases.
- Don’t get down your vehicle . Remain seated in your vehicle in all conditions, maintain your calm in all situations, even if an animal comes too close or jumps on your vehicle 🙂
- Always go for safari with authorised vehicles which has trained driver and guide accompanying it.
- It’s not advisable to take very little kids (< 4 years old) on jungle safari. As the roads are very bumpy and almost non-existent. Which can be a very rough experience for them and cause stomach upset, motion sickness etc.
- If you are very prone to motion sickness and like to avoid bumpy rides then don’t plan for the core zones of safari inside the jungle.
- Stay at least for two nights where you want to take safari. As the safaris generally happen early in the morning or later in the afternoon. And span around 3 hours or more. So, the best itinerary will be to reach your destination on day 1. Relax and rest. Then take an early morning safari on day 2. The chances of spotting animals is highest in morning time. After coming back from safari you can rest for the day and catchup on your sleep. And then checkout on day 3.
- Private vehicles are not allowed inside Jim Corbett National Park.

What is the best time to visit Jim Corbett National Park
Except monsoon season, you can visit Jim Corbett National Park anytime of the year.
Summers are harsh. The temperature starts rising from the middle of March, and by April end or May, it even crosses 40 degree C. If you can bear the heat, summers make for a good time to spot the animals. As they tend to come out of their habitat more often, particularly to the bank of river and other water sources for water.
Winter season from November to Mid March makes for pleasant climate to explore Jim Corbett National Park.
From June to October, the core zones of Jim Corbett National Park remain closed for safari. So, plan your trip accordingly if you are visiting Jim Corbett National Park for safari. We visited here towards the last week of October. However, after gathering all the information, we decided to opt out of safari. Because, one, we were staying in Jim Corbett National Park for only one night. Which means it would be really hectic for us to take the safari. And number two, the core zones were not yet open which means chances of tiger spotting were bleak. We had a wonderful tiger safari experience in Bandhavgarh National Park on our MP road trip and were still content with it. So, we decided to give it a pass this time. And instead, enjoy a staycation in Jim Corbett National Park .
Where to stay in Jim Corbett National Park
From Government guest houses to luxury resort, Jim Corbett National Park has several stay options for all travellers. Some of them are located right on the highway while for some others, you might have to take a little detour and drive a little inside. Some resorts and properties are located right besides the Kosi river, with private access to the river banks. Depending on what is your prime goal for visiting Jim Corbett National Park, you can book an accommodation accordingly.
- If you are going for a safari, book a stay near to your zone of safari which will help you with reaching the safari point without much hassle.
- Otherwise, if you want to enjoy a staycation, book a resort near the river bank or one inside the jungle surrounded by greenery so that you can enjoy your staycation in the nature to its best.
We stayed at Tarangi Resort Jim Corbett and thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. This property had river access, nice campus with lots of activities arranged for the day, nice food and spacious rooms. There is a safari starting point right outside the property entrance.
Hope this information helps you plan your safari in Jim Corbett National Park optimally.

Sitabani Safari Zone
Dhikala is the primary zone of the Jim Corbett National Park where night stay is also permitted amidst its jungle. We also provide the complete tour package of Dhikala tourism zone which includes Jeep & Canter Safari Permit and the accommodation at the forest rest houses of Dhikala zone.
Dhikala Jeep Safari
Unlike the other zones of the Corbett National Park, the Dhikala zone doesn’t offer the Jeep safari facility for the day visitors. Only the tourists who have the booking in the forest houses located in the zone can enjoy the Jeep safari in Dhikala. After getting the permit for the night stay in any FRH in the zone, you have to hire a Jeep with a driver and a naturist in order to get inside the park and visit your booked forest house. Once inside the park, you are free to explore the jungle and its flora and fauna by the Jeep for the whole day within the prescribed time.
Perfect example of the unscathed natural beauty, the Dhikala ecotourism zone has the most picturesque landscape in the Corbett National Park. Immensely rich in the wildlife variety, it is the most sought after tourism zone in India. Dhikala zone is the largest among the five zones of the Corbett tiger reserve with having the most beautiful landscape which consists of dense Sal forest, large grassland, narrow valley and various channels of the Ramganga river. The Ramganga River is considered as the lifeline of the Corbett forest which enriches the rustic beauty of the wild and nourishes the flora and fauna of the Corbett.
The prime attraction among the vividly rich wildlife in Dhikala zone is the Royal Bengal Tiger and the Asiatic elephants. To the delight of the tourists, this zone is fairly populated with these big animals and thus most often tourists have been bestowed with the graceful sighting of the Royal Bengal tigers and herds of Asiatic elephants. Dhikala zone named after the large Dhikal grassland which is the largest grassland in the Corbett Reserve landscape. Apart from the tigers and elephants, the zone is home to a large number of varied wild fauna which consists of leopards, spotted deer, sambhar deer, hog deer, langurs, wild boars, crocodiles and many other animals and reptiles.
Dhikala Elephant Safari @ Temporarily Closed
Elephant safari in the dense forest is the best way to explore the rich flora and fauna of the park as well as it is the most thrilling safari experience as tourists can get the sight of animals at very close range in comparison to the Jeep and Canter safari. The Dhikala zone also offers elephant safari but it can be enjoyed only by the tourists staying in the Dhikala forest house. There are limited numbers of the elephant used for safari and it is a first-come-first-served service so the phrase “an early bird can get the worm” is true here. You have to pay for the elephant safari on the spot at the elephant camp as there is no advance booking for this. The elephant safari is not organized on Monday, so if you like to enjoy the elephant safari then organize your night stay at Dhikala accordingly. Note: Elephant Safari in Corbett is currently prohibited by the order of Dehradun apex court under the Wildlife Act.
Attractions In Dhikala Zone
Canter safari is conducted by the Corbett forest officials in the Dhikala zone to provide an opportunity to explore the rich wildlife of this zone. The Canter safari is the only option for the wildlife lovers who stay out of the Dhikala tourism zone and want to visit the area because the Day Jeep safari is not conducted for this zone. The Canter is a 16-seater open bus and a seat on the Canter can be booked from online or from the Corbett National Park office in Ramnagar. The starting point of the Canter safari is Ramnagar Corbett office so the tourists can board the Canter here for the safari if they have pre-booked permit. During the day safari, the Canter makes a stop at the Dhikala forest rest house for a while and tourists can get down from the Canter, get refreshed, take a walk around the compound and can also enjoy the beauty of the overlooking Ramganga river as well as the chance sighting of various wild animals on the riverbed.
Forest Rest House
The night stay in the forest house in the Dhikala zone is like a dream adventure for any wildlife lovers. There are 4 forest rest houses situated in this zone, which are Dhikala FRH, Gairal FRH, Sarpduli FRH and Sultan FRH. Among all the four rest houses, the Dhikala FRH is the most sought after rest house due to its strategic location and enhanced facilities. Dhikala forest rest house is the biggest rest house with having around 28 double-bed rooms and a dormitory of 12 beds in various accommodation wings. Dhikala FRH is the only forest rest house in the Corbett NP which has the facility of 24-hour electricity in the rooms.
In order to visit the Bijrani zone, you have to obtain an entry permit for the safari, which you have to show to the forest officials at the entry gate. You can book your safari entry permit through online maximum of 45 days in advance or you can book the same day safari from the forest office in the Ramnagar after paying the required fee. Booking is done on the first come, first served basis and is a subject to availability. Along with the entry permit, you also have to hire a safari jeep and a guide/naturist, which are mandatory for the entry in the tiger reserve area. Maximum of six adults and two children (below 12 years) are allowed in one safari jeep apart from the driver and a guide. It is always best to book your permit in advance before reaching at the Corbett tiger reserve as there is always a rush of tourists for the safari and only 30 safari jeeps are allowed to enter into the Bijrani zone in one shift and almost all jeeps are pre-booked.
Forest Watchtower
The watchtower is the unique feature of the Dhikala zone, which offers you an amazing opportunity to view the wildlife. The watchtower is situated at the strategic location overlooking the large Chaur and the entire Ramganga River, thus from the tower you will have an excellent sighting of the animals grazing in the grass field or roaming at the bank of the River Ramganga. The watchtower is located nearby the Dhikala rest house and can easily be reached there while staying at the rest house.
Gairal Crocodile Point
Located near the Gairal Rest house, the crocodile point is a terrace-like spot built over a pool with many crocodiles as the permanent habitat. You can watch the crocodiles and their activity by standing on the terrace and looking down in the pool. This is an amazing feeling to watch such a dangerous creature of water at so close.
Grass Lands (Chaurs)
The large grassland, which is known as Chaurs, is the prime location in the Dhikala to spot wild animals from tigers to elephants, various species of deer, wild pigs and many others. Dhikala zone is much famous for its vast Chaurs and the tiger sighting in the area is frequently reported by the tourists.

This is the tourism zone of the Corbett open all through the year for safaris and there is no such limit for entering Jeeps to this area. There are several frivolous brooks flowing through the Sitabani Safari Zone. Tourists in this zone can also do fishing which would be a great idea to enjoy tour around this zone. avoid sitabani safari
There are 5 zones of corbett national park. additionally a new zone have been created recently called sitabani. usually some private jeep owners take tourist to sitabani area, but here you will not find tigers or tuskers etc as in this area the people live. avoid sitabani. go to any other zones...
We all were very exited for the jungle safari but we missed both the times. We were not able to see to the tiger in any safari. We hv done one safari in the morning Nd other one in the evening session. But the jungle is very beautiful. We hv seen many birds their. Deers are the most common sight of our safari. Overall it's a refreshing experience..
last weekend we had two safari rides and one elephant ride. All was fun. The reserve is lovely and vi saw a many animals and birds. One safari was in the eastern part. Lovely forest bud didn't see much animals. The second war from the juverani gate in the south east. There we spent almost an hour with a couple of tigers and their pray. Amazing experience!!! It is important to choose the right entrance and a little luck can help...
The overall experience was good though we were not so lucky to see tiger. We had a close view of a herd of elephants. There were also deer, sambar deer, peacock. However, I liked the ambience of the trip through the jungle. The only thing that I didn't like was the attitude of the guide named Bobby Singh. He was so involved in taking pictures himself that he forgot his responsibility. I feel we could have seen tiger of we would have offered some more money to him.
The bijrani zone of Corbett national park is very beautiful with thick forest areas, vast grasslands and a number of stream beds which are mainly boulder strewn paths. We had booked a jeep safari to this zone and the total cost including the Jeep, driver, permit for four people and an official guide who joined us from the gate of the park was approximately 4.5k. Although bijrani zone is considered to beone of the better zones for spotting tigers as compared to the other zones, we were not that lucky. We had booked an evening safari which started around 2 pm - It was sunny and hot outside, so timing might be one of the reasons. Nevertheless, we saw elephants in the river bed, a jackal, plenty of peacocks and herds of spotted, sambhar, barking deers and exotic birds. Overall, it was a wonderful experience at the Corbett national park and it's very much worth a visit. Notes: Morning safaris are recommended for better climatic conditions. Safari permits need to booked online at-most 30 days in advance. There are restrictions on no. of jeeps allowed in morning and evening, so its recommended that you book it early enough, if you planning on enjoying a jeep safari.
My wife and 3 teenage children visited Corbett arranged through Ramesh Suyall of Tigersincorbett. From the very beginning he was amazing. He always responded to my e-mails very promptly. He listened to what our family were hoping to achieve and advised us on the best way to accomplish this. He arranged for us to be collected from Delhi Railway station and driven to Rishikesh where we experienced the whole atmosphere surrounding this very special place, but more importantly, for the children at least, we had an excellent mornings white water rafting. We stayed in an Ashram, which was a very enlightening experience, but probably not best suited to families, although not strictly observed, there is a rule of silence in the Ashram, as well as strict dress code, which made it feel slightly unwelcoming to visitors not necessarily seeking spiritual enlightenment. Next we spent 4 days in Corbett. For the first and last night we stayed with Ramesh and his family in their "homestay". We were almost disappointed at how nice their house was. We had two large rooms with kingsize beds, air con & en-suites with hot & cold water. It really is a very high standard. The home prepared meals were excellent too. We spent the middle two nights at a rest house in the Dikhala camp. Again this accomodation was very good. A little bit more basic, but still en-suite with hot showers. A far cry from my first visit to Corbett 25years ago when things were a lot more basic! Food was plentiful and of a very good standard (vegetarian) and you could get hot and cold soft drinks, all at a very reasonable price. We had 3 full days safari, including a 2 hour trip into the bush on elephant back. Most of the time we went by jeep. We were disappointed when we discovered that Ramesh would not be guiding us himself, but our guide (Harris) and our driver (Gully) were both excellent. Their knowledge of the park and the wildlife is amazing. we saw so many different animals and birds in one of the most beautiful areas of the world I have seen. we were fortunate enough to see tigers on 2 occasions, which was very special, but the trip would still have been worthwhile even if we had not. Ramesh's philosophy of trying to ensure the money earn't from tourism in this area stays in the local community is to be applauded. He does an enormous amount for charity in his community. I have no hesitation in recommending Tigersincorbett if you are planning a trip to Corbett National Park. Thank you Ramesh (and your family, Harris & Gully) for a lifelong memory.
