7 Not-to-be-Missed Stops on a New York to Boston Road Trip

NYC to Boston road trip itinerary with cobblestone Boston street

Whether you live in NYC and need a getaway or you just want to plan a road trip, a New York to Boston road trip is a classic vacation. While you can make the trip in a day, don’t rush it but plan some stops to see cute towns, historic sights, and beautiful beaches along the way.

I’ve structured this trip to take a week or so, but you can easily turn this into a long weekend trip by cutting down on some of the stops. Some alternate itineraries are outlined below.

The Boston to New York route can get quite congested. In the summer, you can expect a lot of traffic from people traveling to or from the Cape, especially on the weekends. Interstate 95 through Connecticut is notorious for its traffic jams so be sure to check Waze or use Google or Apple Maps to check for the fastest routes. Sometimes using the Merritt Parkway through Southern Connecticut can save you some time. Some people may choose to jump on a Peter Pan bus , or take the train from Boston to NYC , but driving will let you stop along the way.

If you want to go further north, continue on with this Boston to Bar Harbor Maine coast road trip itinerary or extend your road trip even further with this East Coast road trip .

Where to Stop on your New York to Boston Road Trip

New York, NY

If you haven’t been to New York City , plan to spend a few days at the beginning or end of your road trip. If this is your first trip to NYC, pick one neighborhood, like the Theater District, Midtown East, Soho, or Lower Manhattan, and explore.

You can’t expect to see everything in one weekend but you are bound to find something for everyone from Broadway shows, world-class museums, walking tours, dining experiences, local food halls, or outdoor enjoyment in Central Park, Battery Park, the High Line, or walking across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Here are some fun ideas for things to do in NYC with kids .

Day 1: Essex, CT

Kick off your road trip to Boston with a drive along the Connecticut coast. You can complete this drive in two hours, but if you aren’t in a hurry, take your time with some stops along the way. Your destination is the quaint Connecticut town of Essex, in western Connecticut. However, you may want to make some stops along the way. The upscale waterfront town of Greenwich is a perfect spot for lunch or some upscale shopping.

However, if you have gotten an early start, skip over Greenwich and stop in Norwalk. In the summer you can hop on board a harbor cruise or take a boat ride into history and nature with a Sheffield Island lighthouse cruise. The SoNo historic district is packed with restaurants that are perfect for lunch.

Continue along to Essex, where you can make your home base for a couple of nights at the Griswold Inn , the oldest continuously operating inn in America. Dining in the historic taproom is a fun experience. Alternatively, you could stay in nearby Mystic .

There is so much to do in this area, especially with kids. Take a ride on the Essex Steam Train, enjoy a fall foliage cruise on the Connecticut River, visit the bizarre and historic Gillette Castle, explore local lighthouses on a harbor cruise from New London, and stroll along the Niantic Boardwalk.

Mystic CT Harbor

Day 3: Mystic, CT

On your next day, head over to nearby Mystic , Connecticut. You can spend the morning at the Mystic Aquarium and go back in time at the Historic Mystic Seaport. This is a great opportunity to learn about the fishing heritage in this area. You may want to stop for lunch at the popular Mystic Pizza, although I prefer the cool vibes of Engine Room. Nearby, wine aficionados will enjoy a tasting and picnic at Jonathan Edwards Winery in nearby Stonington, CT.

After exploring Mystic, cross the border into Rhode Island where you may want to pop into Watch Hill for a ride on the historic Flying Horses carousel. From there it is only an hour drive to Newport, Rhode Island.

There are many great hotel options in Newport, including the historic Hotel Viking or The Vanderbilt , although families may prefer the contemporary Newport Marriott (especially if you want to use points).

Marble House in Newport Rhode Island

Day 3: Newport, RI

Of course, there is so much to do in Newport , you can easily spend a long weekend. If this is your first visit, there are three things you have to do. First, visit one of the Newport Mansions, such as the famous Breakers. Next, either take a walk on the Cliff Walk or a scenic drive along Ocean Avenue.

Have lunch downtown at Diego’s or The Black Pearl before setting sail for an afternoon or evening sunset sailing cruise. If you have timed your visit with one of Providence ‘s famous Waterfire events , head 45 minutes north to Rhode Island’s Creative Capital for this unique experience.

There are plenty of great places to stay in Providence, but if you are going for something unique, stay at the Graduate Providence .

River in downtown Providence with gondola

Day 4: Providence, RI

It is nice to spend at least half a day in Providence before driving another hour or two to Cape Cod. In Providence, you can explore the amazing murals downtown, then walk along the river and over the pedestrian bridge for lunch at Plant City, the city’s only plant-based food hall.

If you have time, you may want to try a Rhode Island Red food tour to check out the city’s famous food scene or get the history of the city from the river with a tour from Providence River Boat Company.

Soon it is time to head east to Cape Cod. If you only have one night to spend on the Cape, you may want to stick to Falmouth at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel or Hyannis at the Cape Codder Resort . If you want to spend more time at the beach, venture a little further out to stay at the luxurious Wequasset Resort or Chatham Bars Inn .

Chapin's Beach on Cape Cod with a family under an umbrella

Day 5: Cape Cod, MA

On Cape Cod, you can spend the day biking the Cape Cod Rail Trail, exploring the National Seashore, and enjoying the Cape’s gorgeous beaches and sunsets. You may also enjoy a whale-watching cruise or a lobster bake on the beach with Art’s Dune Tours in Provincetown.

There are endless options to explore on the Cape, even in the off-season .

Plymouth Rock

Day 6: Plymouth, MA

Just 40 minutes up the coast from Cape Cod is a must-stop destination for United States history buffs . Plymouth is a fun seaside town to explore, just don’t have high expectations for Plymouth Rock. Kids will enjoy stepping onto the replica Mayflower II ship — returned to its home in Plymouth in 2020.

I would also highly recommend visiting the Pilmouth Pawtuxet Museums (formerly known as Plimouth Plantations.) The site consists of a 17th-century English village and a Wampanoag homesite.

You can stay overnight at the John Carver Inn , but it probably makes sense to continue 45 minutes further into your ultimate destination — Boston!

Make way for ducklings statue in Boston

Day 7: Boston, MA

There is so much to do in Boston you really want to give yourself a couple of days, but if you only have a day you can hit a few of the highlights. Start at the Boston Public Garden and Boston Common and strap on your walking shoes to explore the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail. There is a lot of history to absorb and for families, a great spot to do that is at the Boston Tea Party Museum and Ships.

Afterward, explore the waterfront, pop into the North End for a great Italian lunch and pastries, stroll down the Rose Kennedy Greenway, visit the Boston Public Market food hall, and explore the city center. If you don’t feel like doing all the walking, you can also hop on board an amphibious duck boat tour.

If you spend 3 days in Boston or more, you can also plan a day trip from Boston up to Salem or Gloucester . See also my guide for visiting Boston on a budget and find out things to do in Boston with kids .

Day 8: Return to New York City

On your trip back from Boston to NYC, you can return the way you came in a four-hour drive or extend your road trip by taking a different route back. If you are looking for an alternative, driving from Boston, you can take Interstate 90 / the Mass Pike West instead of heading back down 95.

An hour west of Boston you will come to Old Sturbridge Village, MA. This is the largest outdoor living history museum in New England, with buildings and interpreters representing life in rural New England between 1790 and 1830. From here, travel south on Interstate 84 to Hartford and continue on Interstate 91 to New Haven, CT, for approximately 1.25 hours in total.

If you are hungry, be sure to enjoy Frank Pepe’s famous pizza (there is also an outpost in Hartford.) If you need to stretch your legs, take a stroll through the Yale University campus. If traffic goes well, it is then less than two hours drive back to New York City.

A road trip from New York City to Boston is on many bucket lists. Most people drive the coastal route with stops in Connecticut and Rhode Island. As an alternative, try going inland through New York State and Western Massachusetts. You will discover many cultural, culinary, and historical hidden gems on this road trip.

This road trip can be done any time of year. On an autumn trip, you will see amazing fall colors. Spring brings an abundance of flowers. It is doable in winter, but some spots are seasonal and the roads can get snowy. Summer is full of interesting events and a lot of crowds.

1. New York City

New York City is a fantastic destination any time of year. Culture, theater, food, parks, and history — it’s all there. If you are a first-time visitor , you may want to focus on the top attractions: Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central Station, Chinatown, and Broadway.

As a native New Yorker, I like the hidden gems of New York , and you might also include a trip to Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, or the Bronx as part of your adventure.

New York is one of the culinary capitals of the world, so be sure to sample the many ethnic cuisines in the city. Chinatown, Curry Row, Katz’s, and Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery are definitely worth a try.

Once you’ve had your fill of the Big Apple, it’s time to get on the road. First stop: the Hudson Valley. The Hudson Valley begins just north of New York City and extends all the way to Albany. On this road trip, you’ll be going through the lower portion of the Hudson Valley, about an hour’s drive from Manhattan. The next several stops in our itinerary will allow you to experience the beauty of this fine region.

The Union Church of Pocantico Hills in New York.

2. Union Church Of Pocantico Hills Stained Glass

The first stop is a hidden gem. Built by the Rockefeller family, the Union Church of Pocantico Hills is a small, unassuming church with nine stained glass windows by Marc Chagall and one by Henri Matisse. Take a moment of quiet reflection and to admire the stained glass. Photography is not allowed inside the church. It is wheelchair accessible and a short walk from the parking lot.

Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate in New York.

3. Kykuit: The Rockefeller Estate

The Hudson Valley is full of historic sites that date to the gilded age, including the Rockefeller and Vanderbilt estates as well as those of Presidents Martin Van Buren and Franklin Roosevelt. Pick at least one to visit.

Our favorite is Kykuit, the home of four generations of Rockefellers. The gardens, views, and homes are spectacular. You can only visit Kykuit by booking a tour . It is best to buy your tickets in advance, especially if you are visiting in the summer. The art galleries are included on the three-hour tour.

The grounds are extensive, so walking shoes are important. Some parts are accessible, but not all. When booking a tour, check the website for full accessibility information.

For a dinnertime splurge, Blue Hill at Stone Barns is nearby. This farm-to-table restaurant is amazing but very expensive. There are many affordable restaurants, hotels, and bed-and-breakfasts in Tarrytown and the surrounding areas, too.

If you are in the Hudson Valley during October, Sleepy Hollow is a great place to experience Halloween for children and families.

After checking out of your overnight stay the next morning, head up to New Windsor, about an hour’s drive.

4. Storm King Art Center

Storm King is a 500-acre outdoor museum with large-scale sculptures. It is stunning any time of year. Our favorite time to visit is in autumn when it is less crowded and the fall colors light up the area. Sunscreen, insect repellent, and good walking shoes are in order. If you have mobility challenges, a tram traverses the grounds and is equipped for wheelchairs.

For lunch, there is food onsite and in nearby restaurants. Alternatively, take a 40-minute drive to our next recommended stop: the Culinary Institute of America.

The Culinary Institute of America in New Hyde Park.

5. Culinary Institute Of America

Want to see where the next top chef is being trained? Stop by the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). CIA was the first college to offer culinary arts instruction in the U.S. The late celebrity chef and host of Kitchen Confidential , Anthony Bourdain, was an alumni.

Located in beautiful New Hyde Park, the CIA primary campus is a good place to visit for an hour. The school has a cafe and two restaurants on the premises. Reservations are recommended and are sometimes booked up months in advance.

6. Rhinebeck, New York

Rhinebeck is a short 20-minute drive from CIA. It is very popular for antiques. You can find treasures anytime of the year, and there is a huge antique show in October . If you visit in July, there is a hot air balloon festival . In May, you’ll find an antique car show .

Stay overnight in Rhinebeck. Make sure to book your room in advance if you are attending one of the festivals. The Old Rhinebeck Inn and the Fiddlers Farmhouse are two possibilities.

The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.

7. MASS MoCA

Get on the road first thing the next morning for the two-hour drive to North Adams, the home of the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) .

Located in North Adams, MASS MoCA is one of the largest contemporary art and performing spaces in the country. Housed in a converted print factory complex, the museum is known for its oversized modern and contemporary installations not usually found in traditional galleries. In addition to special exhibitions, MASS MoCA offers a wide variety of music, sculpture, dance, film, painting, photography, and theater. The museum has an excellent bistro on site.

The place to stay when visiting MASS MoCA is across the Hoosic River. The Porches Inn is a charming boutique inn converted from a row of beautifully restored 19th-century Victorian homes. Named for its porches filled with rocking chairs, it is very cozy with working fireplaces and claw-foot tubs. The inn blends whimsical comfort with modern amenities.

8. Northampton, Massachusetts

An hour’s drive from MASS MoCA, Northampton and nearby Amherst are college towns. Smith, Hampshire, Amherst, and Mount Holyoke Colleges are located there. The Botanic Garden of Smith College is worth the trip. You can also wander Main Street to see the art galleries. Want to travel off the beaten track? Visit the Yiddish Book Center in Amherst. The center is dedicated to the preservation of Yiddish, the language of eastern European Jewish communities. More than a million books are collected there.

It’s a two-hour drive to the next stop — Salem, famous for the Salem witch trials of the 1690s.

9. Salem, Massachusetts

Salem has much to offer and could easily be an overnight stop or a day trip from Boston.

Of the many tourist attractions related to the Salem witch trials, our favorite is the Salem Witch Memorial to the 20 men and women who were tried and executed. Fans of Nathaniel Hawthorne can also take a walk to see the House of the Seven Gables, the setting for the novel.

The Peabody Essex Museum is also a must-see. Its collection spans widely from maritime artifacts to Asian and African art.

While in Salem, make sure to go to the Punto Urban Art Museum on the other side of town. The area has extensive murals painted by local and internationally famous artists. It is part of an effort by the North Shore Community Development Corporation to use street art as a social justice and community development effort.

Once you are done in Salem, make the 40-minute drive to Boston where you will spend the next three days exploring the city.

10. Boston, Massachusetts

You’ve now arrived in Boston, a city with many historical gems . Some favorites are the Freedom Trail, Paul Revere’s house, and Faneuil Hall. Perhaps you’ll want to catch a baseball game in Fenway Park, soak in the sun in Boston Commons, or grab a drink at the famous Cheers bar. Crossing the Charles River will bring you to Harvard , MIT, and Cambridge.

Take your time to savor the scenic drives on this road trip and the hidden gems throughout the Hudson Valley. If you enjoy bed and breakfasts, there are many. Make sure to book your accommodations well in advance if you are traveling in the summer or during one of the many festivals. If you want to dine at the Culinary Institute of America or Blue Hill at Stone Barns, we recommend making reservations months in advance.

From Broadway shows to the Green Monster, a road trip from New York City to Boston is one to remember.

NYC and Boston are only about 200 miles apart. And yet, despite the small distance, there are boatloads of things to see between them. Thanks to the stunning scenery and New England’s historic towns, the short journey is made incredible thanks to its enchanting surroundings.

From theme parks to towns made famous by movies, here’s the perfect itinerary for anyone making the trip between Beantown and the Big Apple. So buckle up and bring a snack, because here we go.

New York City to Boston Road Trip Section by Section

There are two basic ways to go from New York City to Boston. You can go north through New York and then head east on I-90 or immediately go east along I-95 which brings you straight into Boston.

One way traverses mountains and quaint, artsy towns while the other skirts along Long Island Sound and coastal hamlets. Instead of telling you to pick one or the other, below is an itinerary of doing a loop road trip, where you start and end in New York City.

Segment 1: New York City to Hudson

Distance : 120 miles Drive time without stops : 1 hour and 50 minutes

Segment 1 Highlight: Take a hike

Storm King Mountain new york

You can’t drive through the Hudson Valley without hiking to see the namesake river in all its beauty. If you’re looking for an easier jaunt to take in the vistas, consider hiking up to the summit of Storm King Mountain . The two-and-a-half-mile hike brings you up and down the mountain with sweeping views of the valley without too much effort.

For a bit of a harder hike (and a much less-populated path), head to Mount Beacon Park . To get there, just go north of Storm King Mountain and cross over the river to its eastern banks. Here you’ll take the trail up to South Beacon’s fire tower for 360-degree views.

Segment 1 Highlight: Walk around the quaint town of Hudson

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by Hudson, New York (@cityofhudson)

Several small and historic towns dot the shoreline along the Hudson River. None compares to the downtown of Hudson though. With dozens of restaurants, shops, and places to explore, you’ll never be bored.

I suggest checking out the local flower shop called Flowerkraut where you can get both flowers and amazing sauerkraut. Or, pop into one of the many home furnishing stores like FINCH Hudson, Red Chair, and MINNA.

End your day at The Spotty Dog Books & Ale where you can get lost in the latest thriller while sipping on some beers.

Segment 1 Side Trip: Release your inner child and head to LEGOLAND

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by LEGOLAND New York (@legoland.newyork)

Located just north of New York City in the small town of Goshen, lies a new addition to the Northeast. LEGOLAND opened in 2021 and since its inaugural year, it just keeps getting better and better. Whether you’re a kindergartener or a retiree, LEGOLAND has something for everyone.

There are rides for little kiddos, a few rollercoasters, and a water playground. But the real gem of the park is their various LEGO-building areas where you can put your creativity to the test and construct whatever your heart desires.

Segment 2: Hudson, NY to Boston, MA

Distance : 160 miles Drive time without stops : 2 hours and 45 minutes

Segment 2 Highlight: Head back to the 1800s in Old Sturbridge Village

old sturbridge village

Step back in time to the early 1800s when life was slower. Old Sturbridge Village covers 200 acres and houses 40 historic buildings where visitors can walk around and immerse themselves in what it was like centuries ago. Workers are in full costume and won’t understand you if you talk about Taylor Swift or TikTok.

Don’t try to trip them up because they’ll never break character no matter how hard you try. If you’re lucky enough to visit during early August, their annual “Redcoats & Rebels” re-enactment is something to behold.

Segment 2 Side Trip: Walk around Northampton

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by Max Passa (@413valleyguy)

If you can swing it, the town of Northampton is well worth the side trip north of the I-90. It’s got a great main street where you can shop, dine, and people-watch for hours. It’s known as an artsy town with dozens of art galleries, quirky shops, and eccentric locals that bring a lot of character to this small town.

One place to note is Bluebonnet Diner, where patrons will feel like they’ve gone back to the 1950s in this train car-style restaurant complete with chipped coffee mugs. If you’re looking for a bit more elegance, head to Homestead where the head chef brings old-fashioned Italian cuisine to New England. Cap off your night at the Tunnel Bar where you can sip a wee dram of whisky while sitting underneath Union Station, which was used by travelers back in the late 1800s.

Segment 3: Boston, MA to Mystic, CT

Distance : 100 miles Drive time without stops : 1 hour and 45 minutes

Segment 3 Highlight: Providence

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by WaterFire Providence (@waterfireprov)

The capital of Rhode Island might seem small compared to the cities of New York and Boston, but it’s got a lot to see within its borders. The world-renowned Rhode Island School of Design (more commonly known as “RIS-dee”) has a museum that holds incredible works of art from artists across the world.

Speaking of art, check the schedule for the lighting of WaterFire – a mesmerizing art exhibition within Waterplace Park. Other places to visit include the Providence Athenæum, a public library that looks like a museum, or the Roger Williams Zoo.

Segment 3 Side Trip: Get all witchy in Salem

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by The House of the Seven Gables (@h7gables)

No matter the time of year, Salem brings all the Halloween vibes. Whether you are a history buff, one who believes in ghosts, or just a huge fan of Bewitched , Salem will not disappoint. For those wanting to know about the history of the town, consider stopping in at The House of Seven Gables , the Salem Pioneer Village, or the Salem Maritime National Historic Site. If witches are what you’re after, make sure to pop by the Salem Witch Museum, The Burying Point, and The Witch House of Salem.

If you’re just there to have a good time and see the sights, start at the Peabody Essex Museum . Then walk along the main drag to hit up some of the quirkiest shops. For those wanting wands, head to Wynott Wands; for books, Wicked Good Books; and for general witchiness, Crow Haven Corner or the Coven’s Cottage are your best bet.

Segment 4: Mystic, CT to New York City

Distance : 130 miles Drive time without stops : 2 hours and 45 minutes

Segment 4 Highlight: Head to a beachside carousel

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by Nathan Limbach (@nathanlimbach)

Before you leave Mystic, head to Watch Hill to catch some sun rays and get a little taste of the Atlantic Ocean. You might get a glimpse of Taylor Swift since she bought a seaside mega mansion here. But the town is known more for its beach than the celebrity residents.

Watch Hill Beach (also known as “the one with the merry-go-round”) can get very crowded but rightly so. The surf is calm, the sand is soft, and the views go on for days. If you ride the carousel, make sure to pay for an outside horse ticket so you can play the Brass Ring game and have a chance at snagging a free ride. There’s also a Nature Conservancy protected area called Napatree Point Conservation Area (my suggestion is to visit this place at sunrise when visitors are few).

Segment 4 Side Trip: Block Island

View this post on Instagram                         A post shared by Seamus Moran | Coastal Art (@eastlakeimages)

Hop on the Block Island Ferry and sail to the small island within Long Island Sound. Make sure to book out a whole day to experience the entirety of Block Island .

It’s well known for its beaches but there’s a lot more to do than just sunbathe. There are more than 50 stores on the island, each with its own unique spin on island life. Block Island Trading Company is the perfect place to grab a souvenir while the Island Bound Bookstore will keep your reading needs up to speed as you lay in the sun.

Best time to go on a road trip from Boston to New York City

There's truly no bad time to do the road trip from Boston to New York City - this is one of those cities that don't have a peak season per se, so you can have an amazing time whenever you decide to visit.

NYC comes alive with outdoor markets and events in the summer, and Central Park is beautiful this time of year too. Still, you can expect temperatures of over 80 degrees if you visit in August, and the massive crowds can make it feel even hotter.

If the heat is a deal-breaker for you, spring makes for a milder alternative. You can still expect crowds this time of year, and you may get caught off-guard by the occasional raincloud, but the city is still ripe with activities if you're looking to spend time outdoors.

Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City with taxis parked in front of it

Thanksgiving can be especially busy in New York, but aside from that, fall is the closest thing to a shoulder season you can expect here. This is a good time to visit if you're looking to save money on accommodation or simply want to see the streets a little less crowded.

Come winter, New York starts picking up steam again in the tourism department. Lots of people like to spend their Christmas holidays here, and for good reason - the streets look mesmerizing covered in a thin layer of snow.

With all that said, one downside to visiting in the winter is that some of the forests and parks along the way may be inaccessible. Most of the attractions en route are urban to begin with, so if you want to see some greenery, this may not be the best time for you to do the trip.

The cliffs in Aquinnah on Martha's Vineyard are absolutely stunning, and shouldn't be missed when visiting.

Block Island is a beautiful island off the coast of Rhode Island with gorgeous beaches, walking trails, water activities, salt marshes, great restaurants and is overall a wonderful place to relax while appreciating the outdoors. This actually might be one of my top underdog suggestions for a weekend getaway from Boston.

It actually reminds me a bit of Prince Edward Island, so if you’re looking to live out your Anne of Green Gables dreams, but can’t make it to Canada, this is a great place to do that. There’s even a lovely hotel on the island called Avonlea.

To get to the island, you’ll need to drive to the Pt. Judith ferry terminal in Rhode Island. For more information on the ferry, click here .

Goat Island Lighthouse is a fun place to visiting when in Newport, RI.

Newport is a stunning coastal city in Rhode Island that’s the perfect destination for sailing, shopping, dining and being by the water. Even though it’s technically a city, I wanted to include it in the coastal destinations group because it definitely feels more like a resort waterfront town than a city.

Road Trip Itinerary Options

If you’re looking to combine towns from this list into longer roads trips, or are wondering which towns are close enough to combine together to maximize your time and cover the most ground, I’ve got you covered! Below you’ll find suggested itineraries with different routes you can take while planning the best road trips from Boston.

Option 1: Massachusetts North Shore Road Trip From Boston

A map of the North Shore route from Boston.

For this route, you’ll head north from Boston and visit the following destinations:

  • Newburyport & Plum Island
  • Portsmouth, NH

Days Needed For This Route: 2-4 . If you’re looking for an easy road trip from Boston with lots of options, this is an awesome route to take. You can do it in as little as 2 days for a weekend trip, or add on two additional days to take your time and explore each town.

Option 2: Cape Cod & The Islands Road Trip From Boston

A map of the Cape Cod road trip from Boston route.

For this route, you’ll head south from Boston and visit the following destinations:

  • Martha’s Vineyard

Days Needed For This Route: 7-8 days. Because this route requires ferries from Cape Cod to the islands, and with Cape Cod being a larger region to explore, I recommend a week.

If you have less time, the islands could be done as day trips, and you could attempt this route in about 5 days . If you have 10 days, I would suggest spending one night in Plymouth, 5 days on Cape Cod, two nights on Nantucket and two nights on Martha’s Vineyard for the ultimate Cape Cod road trip.

Option 3: Boston To Bar Harbor Road Trip

A map of the route from Boston to Bar Harbor.

This route will take you up the coast of Maine and stop in these destinations:

  • Newburyport, MA
  • Ogunquit, ME
  • Kennebunkport, ME
  • Portland, ME
  • Bar Harbor, ME

Days Needed For This Route: 7-10 days. I suggest this much time because your final destination, Bar Harbor, is home to Acadia National Park, and there’s so much to see and do just in the park. And each stop along the way is a very worthy destination to spend at least one night in.

If you’re very short on time, you can do this route in 4 nights with this itinerary:

  • On your way to Ogunquit, pass through Newburyport and spend 2-3 hours there. Arrive in Ogunquit late afternoon to spend the night.
  • The next day, spend the morning in Ogunquit, and then drive to Kennebunkport to spend about 3 hours exploring there. Drive to Portland, and spend the night.
  • The next day, spend your morning in Portland, and then drive to Bar Harbor to arrive by mid-afternoon. Spend 2 nights in Bar Harbor.
  • Drive back to Boston.

I have a detailed Boston To Bar Harbor, Maine Road Trip Itinerary if you’d like more help with planning!

Option 4: Vermont Road Trip From Boston

A map of the Vermont road trip from Boston route.

For this route, you’ll head northwest of Boston, and drive through the best towns in Vermont from this list. You’ll cover these destinations:

  • Manchester, VT
  • Woodstock, VT
  • Burlington, VT

Note : This route isn’t as direct as the other routes, and will include 6.5 hours of driving time to get from Boston to Burlington, stopping at the other destinations along the way. But then you can drive direct from Burlington to Boston on your way home, which will only take 3.5 hours.

Days Needed For This Route: 3-5 days . This could easily be a long weekend itinerary if you don’t stop in each town overnight, and just visit Manchester and Stowe for a few hours each. You could, of course, take your time, and do up to 5 nights for this itinerary.

Option 5: Rhode Island & Coastal Connecticut Road Trip From Boston

A map of the coastal Rhode Island road trip from Boston route.

This route will take you southwest from Boston, and you’ll visit these destinations:

  • Providence, RI
  • Newport, RI
  • Block Island, RI
  • Westerly, RI

Days Needed For This Route: 3-6 days . This is another itinerary you could also do in a weekend if you only spend a few hours in Mystic, as a day trip from Newport, and skip going to Block Island. To visit all these destinations, you’ll need about 5 days, but 6 would be ideal to not feel rushed.

Tip : If you wanted to extend your road trip further along this route, there is a ferry that leaves from New London, CT, and goes to the Hamptons!

Option 6: Boston To New York City & The Hamptons Road Trip

A map of the route from Boston to New York City and the Hamptons.

This route will take you to these destinations:

  • Rhinebeck, NY
  • New Paltz, NY
  • New York City
  • The Hamptons
  • Optional add-on: Philadelphia, PA

Note : The route from Boston to The Hamptons, while making all the stops in the Hudson Valley in-between, is not direct, and will take about 7.5 hours without stops, so I highly suggest you stop overnight in at least one of the towns to break up your drive. If you wanted to visit Philadelphia, this would be the route you would want to add that destination to, as you will have to drive through NYC to get there.

Days Needed For This Route: 1 week. To do this route in 7 days, I would suggest spending a few hours each in Hudson and Rhinebeck, then spend the night in New Paltz (splurging at Mohonk Mountain House is definitely worth it!). Then drive to NYC the next day, and spend 3 nights there. Then drive to The Hamptons, and spend 3 nights. If you want to add Philadelphia, you’ll want to add an extra night or two.

If you’re short on time and want to do this route in fewer days, I would suggest spending a night in the Hudson Valley (same as above), spend 3 nights in NYC, but include a day trip to The Hamptons. Or, if The Hamptons is of more interest to you, you could spend one night in NYC, and spend a night or two in The Hamptons. And then drive back to Boston.

The other option is to drive direct from Boston to New York City, and leave out the Hudson Valley towns entirely. On that route, your focus would be New York City and The Hamptons.

What Towns Are 1 Hour From Boston?

Is Boston Close To Niagara Falls?

Boston is over 7 hours from Niagara Falls, and for that reason, didn’t make this list of road trips. But if you have extra time, it could be added to a road trip itinerary for Skaneateles, NY and the finger lakes region.

1. New York City, NY

Not ready to start the engine quite yet? The endless selection of New York City sights never disappoints

Climb Empire State Building

Time after time, the Empire State Building gets ranked as one of the best New York attractions to visit. It could very well be the world’s most famous building.

At it’s tip, the Empire State Building reaches 1,454 feet (443 m). The soaring icon, with 102 stories, defines the skyline of New York City.

From its observation deck you get a magnificent view of the city that never sleeps. Day or night, the Empire State Building is an iconic place.

Hang out in Central Park

Central Park has since 1858 offered a relaxing contrast to the bustling streets of New York City. It’s an oasis that attracts locals and visitors alike.

With 843 carefully planned acres, Central Park invites you to a variety of activities before you start driving. From walking trails and playgrounds to lawns and fountains, it’s a park for every activity level.

Scenic route: Both Interstate 95 and Route 1 take you from Mystic to Newport in about an hour. Interstate 95 is slightly quicker, but Route 1 is more scenic and traces the coastline better.

3. Newport, RI

  • Driving distance:  47 mi / 76 km
  • Driving time:  1 h

New England’s remarkable coastal landscape is there to be explored. In Newport, Rhode Island , the Atlantic waves meet elegant mansions from a different time.

Tour historic Newport mansions

Newport is renowned for its historic mansions. These icons were constructed along Newport’s coastline between the 1850s and early 1900s.

Most famously, the Breakers was built from 1893 to 1895 as a summer getaway for Cornelius Vanderbilt II, who was one of the richest men in the US. In Gilded Age style, the mansion is just as full of luxury as you can imagine.

The Breakers is just one of several mansions to explore in Newport. Other fascinating mansion stops include the Elms and Marble House.

Each of these mansions is beautiful from the outside, but sign up for a Newport mansion tour for the complete experience.

Hit the cliffs of Newport

Newport Cliff Walk stretches for 3.5 miles (6 km) along the eastern shore of Newport. It’s a pathway, surrounded by crashing waves and stunning mansions, that has become an attraction on its own.

Where the famed cliff walk ends, the adventure continues on Ocean Drive. This road follows the southern shore of Newport, and its westernmost point, Castle Hill Lighthouse, is the end every scenic route deserves.

With scenery around every turn, exploring Newport’s coastline feels like a scavenger hunt lined by treasure chests.

4. Martha’s Vineyard, MA

  • Driving distance:  69 mi / 111 km
  • Driving time:  1.5 h

At the beginning of Cape Cod, also known as the Upper Cape, Falmouth offers the quickest ferry connection to Martha’s Vineyard. From Falmouth, it’s just 35 minutes to Martha’s Vineyard across the sound.

Martha’s Vineyard is a quintessential Massachusetts and New England destination. From its beautiful homes to its peaceful shoreline, it’s a gorgeous spot to kick back.

Route info: It’s 69 miles (111 km) and 1.5 hours from Newport to Falmouth. Add extra time for the ferry from Falmouth to Martha’s Vineyard.

Pick a favorite town

Martha’s Vineyard consists of six different towns: Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, Vineyard Haven, West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah.

Oak Bluffs, central on the northern shore, is dotted with gingerbread cottages. These colorful structures, there are more than 300 of them, make up a well preserved collection of Methodist summer camp buildings from the 1800s.

Edgartown, east of Oak Bluffs, instead stands out for its elegant white-painted houses. These historic ship captains’ homes primarily represent the period of the 19th century when Edgartown was a booming whaling center.

Vineyard Haven, west of Oak Bluffs, is the only town on Martha’s Vineyard with a year-round ferry service. So if you go in the off season, Vineyard Haven is the first town on the island that you encounter.

The southern shore of Martha’s Vineyard is much less frequented than its northern counterpart. Down south, the towns West Tisbury, Chilmark and Aquinnah most of all offer solitude.

5. Cape Cod, MA

  • Driving distance:  56 mi / 90 km

Back on Cape Cod , another 56 miles (90 km) take you to the peninsula’s most treasured natural attraction: Cape Cod National Seashore. Far away from the bustling mainland, its peacefulness makes it easier than ever to unwind.

Play in Cape Cod National Seashore

Cape Cod provides 560 miles (901 km) of coastline to enjoy. From Cape Cod Bay to the Atlantic Ocean, it’s a destination that promises joy for the beach bum.

But on the idyllic Cape Cod, its vast Cape Cod National Seashore is a chapter on its own. The 43,607 acres big area is filled with beaches, woods and ponds.

With both pristine beaches and untouched nature, it’s the perfect combo for days out.

The seashore is a playground for humans and animals alike. Deer, turtles and playful seals are just a few of the many creatures from the animal kingdom that call Cape Cod National Seashore their home.

Hug Cape Cod lighthouses

Cape Cod is, much like the rest of New England’s coastline, dotted with pretty lighthouses. These lighthouses offer both a lot of seafaring history and great photo opportunities.

Nobska Lighthouse is the peninsula’s southernmost lighthouse. On Falmouth’s southern tip, it’s a lighthouse that can be seen from the Martha’s Vineyard ferry.

Nauset Lighthouse is a red-and-white landmark within Cape Cod National Seashore. A stone’s throw away the Three Sisters Lighthouses proudly line up.

At the northern end of Cape Cod, you find Race Point Lighthouse. It marks the end of both Cape Cod and the extensive Cape Cod National Seashore.

Not only are the grounds interesting to see, but there are also many amusing tales to be told. You don’t have to be into history to appreciate a Harvard tour.

Written by Lavanya Sunkara and Freddy Sherman Updated May 11, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Whether you are looking for a weekend getaway to take in some history, catch a Red Sox game, explore museums, or just want to escape New York City's bustle, the small New England city of Boston is the perfect choice. Located 216 miles northeast of New York City, Boston is accessible by several methods of transportation from the Big Apple. Visitors can go on a tour, take the bus or train, drive, or fly. Allocate anywhere from three-and-a-half to six hours of travel time between the two cities.

Once in town, take advantage of the country's oldest subway (known as the T) to reach landmarks and attractions , like Quincy Market, Boston Common, Fenway Park, and the Museum of Fine Arts. To help you plan your Boston trip, we've put together the five best ways to travel from New York to Boston.

On This Page:

Highlights: Leave the details to the experts, enjoy a full-day guided tour of major historic sites

Boston is at least a four-hour drive from New York City, but organized tours give you the chance to visit this vibrant city on a day trip without the hassle of driving or dealing with public transportation.

The Boston Freedom Trail Day Trip from New York City shows travelers the city's highlights, from the Freedom Trail to its top tier universities. Get picked up in midtown Manhattan in a comfortable, Wi-Fi-equipped vehicle, and travel along the scenic Connecticut coast to Boston. Pickup is at 6:30am, and you'll get back to the city around 8pm the same night.

The 13-hour tour comes with a professional guide, and stops at Harvard Yard and the university's Widener Library, MIT, Cambridge College, and landmarks such as Trinity Church. A stroll along the Freedom Trail brings you to the sites of the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party, Faneuil Hall, and Boston Common. Stop at Quincy Market for a fresh seafood meal on your own.

George Washington Statue and tulips in the Boston Public Garden

Highlights: A four to six hour journey with plenty of opportunities to explore along the way, good choice for longer stays

If you want the freedom to explore the city with access to a car, driving to Boston can be enjoyable, albeit a bit ambitious. The drive can take anywhere from four to six hours , depending on traffic. It might be a good idea to stay overnight or for a weekend instead of making a day trip.

Whether you are renting a car or bringing your own vehicle, consider parking garage fees (including those associated with hotels), as street parking can be hard to find.

To avoid the heaviest traffic, consider taking the Hutchinson River Parkway to I-684 from White Plains to Brewster. From here, join I-84 through Connecticut, which leads straight to I-90 (Mass Pike) in Massachusetts.

The ideal time to depart on weekdays is just after rush hour to avoid traffic and zip through the Bronx in time for a delicious sandwich lunch (or dinner) at Nardelli's in Milford, CT (a good halfway point), before continuing on your road trip.

It's best to avoid driving in the winter, as you may face potential snow and ice, poor road conditions, and slower traffic.

You could rent a car to make the drive from New York to Boston. Companies like Hertz , Avis , National , Budget , and Thrifty all offer car rentals. They have locations at all the NYC airports (JFK, EWR, and LGA), as well as locations throughout the city and surrounding communities. Keep in mind, it is usually cheaper to rent the car at a city location rather than the airport.

Both New York and Massachusetts (and 16 other northeastern states) use the E-ZPass system of cashless tolls. Bring your E-ZPass if you have one, or consider buying one before your trip (you must have a vehicle registered in one of those 18 states to buy one). Rental cars usually come with an E-ZPass, but review the fees and charges carefully before using it, as they can be steep.

Cashless tolls can also be paid online after you incur them. Ezdrivema.com is the site to do that in Massachusetts, tollsbymailny.com is the site for New York State. Tolls should be paid within 48 hours to avoid extra charges. International visitors should pay before leaving the country, as the sites are only accessible from U.S. computers.

Longfellow Bridge and the Boston skyline

Highlights: Fast and carefree comfort offering a variety of ticket price ranges

Taking the train is perhaps the most charming and relaxing way to get to Boston from New York City. You will catch a train from Penn Station in Manhattan to either Boston South Station, right in the heart of the city, or Boston Back Bay Station located in the South End. Back Bay Station is a bit quieter and connects to the Orange Line (gateway to North Station), while South Station connects to the Red Line; both have access to commuter trains.

Amtrak's Acela Express takes around four hours and provides a beautiful ride with free basic Wi-Fi connectivity, power outlets, foldout tables (if you need to work), and a café car. The train is exclusively Business and First Class; prices vary depending on class and departure times. A First Class ticket comes with a complimentary at-seat meal, beverages, the option to use the station lounges, and early boarding.

Acela Express trains depart hourly during rush hour on weekdays , starting from 6:15am for anyone traveling between the two cities for business.

If you are budget conscious and not in a hurry, opt for an Amtrak Northeast Regional train that takes about four-and-a-half hours. Train travel is the best and fastest option during the winter months, allowing you to bypass poor road conditions or flight delays caused by weather.

Old State House in Boston

Highlights: Cheaper and slower-paced option for travelers with more time

Traveling by bus may not always be the most glamorous experience, but it's often the least expensive. Expect to spend several hours on the bus, given the unpredictability of traffic between the two cities. Buses depart from New York City's Port Authority Bus Terminal, and companies like Greyhound offer rides with free Wi-Fi connectivity. The buses come with onboard restrooms, reclining seats, and power outlets.

Megabus and FlixBus are other cost-effective carriers, with more rides per day and curbside pickup from a designated location in Midtown Manhattan near Times Square. Megabus has reserved seating and varying fares based on the time of departure. The bus drops you off at Boston's South Station.

FlixBus runs more than 10 buses per day between New York and Boston. The direct trips take between four and five hours. Pickup is curbside in Midtown at 34th Street and 8th Avenue (next to Penn Station) and drop-off in Boston is in the South End area, also curbside. FlixBuses have restrooms, reclining seating, free Wi-Fi, and even a free onboard entertainment app for your personal device.

Tickets for these three companies can all be purchased online. Bus rides take anywhere from four-and-a-half to six hours (if you are traveling on a Friday afternoon/evening).

Aerial view of Boston

Highlights: 35 minute flights get you to the sights quickly

The fastest way to get to Boston from New York City is by plane, as long as there are no flight delays. The flight to Boston's Logan International Airport (BOS) takes approximately an hour (with just 35 minutes in the air) ; add the time you need to get to the airport, clear security, and wait to board, and you're looking at three hours or more before landing in Beantown.

Sometimes flight prices are cheaper than the train, making flying a more affordable option. Major airlines like JetBlue , United , American , and Delta fly from New York City area airports to Boston. Once you reach Boston's Logan International Airport, catch a Silver Line bus to South Station (between 5:30am and 12:30am, seven days a week). You can also take a taxi or an Uber or Lyft into the city from the airport. The Logan Express bus is an inexpensive bus option, taking you from the airport to stops in the Braintree, Framingham, Peabody, or Woburn areas.

New York City and Boston are the East Coast’s most iconic cities, and while they’re relatively close, driving between the cities can be tough due to seemingly endless traffic. Because of this, a number of airlines have started offering near-hourly shuttle flights between the cities, making it easy for travelers to make the short hop at any time during the day.

Further, there’s also frequent rail service between the cities. A number of Amtrak routes run between New York City and Boston, including the high-speed Acela Express service that offers both business and first class cabins.

Need to make a jump up or down the coast and have travel miles to spare? You’re in the right place — here are the best ways to travel between New York City and Boston using miles and points.

One of the best ways to fly domestically is with Delta SkyMiles award tickets. The airline uses a dynamic award chart for all of its award tickets, meaning that award ticket pricing varies based on passenger load, travel date, and other variables. It also means that Delta does not publish a standardized award chart for award tickets.

While this skyrocketed award ticket pricing for some awards (think long-haul business class), some tickets actually dropped in price significantly. One of the best examples of this is short-haul economy tickets and the NYC to Boston route is no exception.

Redeeming Delta SkyMiles for NYC to BOS

Currently, Delta Air Lines flies to Boston (BOS) from John F. Kennedy-New York (JFK), LaGuardia-New York (LGA), and Newark Liberty (EWR). When searching just over a month in advance, you can find one-way tickets priced at 4,500 SkyMiles one-way in Basic Economy. Better yet? You’ll pay just $5.60 in taxes on these tickets.

Hot Tip:  Book as far in advance as possible to get the lowest priced SkyMiles award tickets.

Need more Delta miles? Delta is an Amex airline partner  and Marriott airline partner allowing you to transfer at varying rates. Plus, check out our full guide to earning miles with Delta SkyMiles to find even more ways to stock up.

Booking Economy Web Speacials Between NYC and Boston

American Airlines flyers can book NYC to Boston on the cheap using the AAdvantage program . Last year the airline introduced Economy Web Special award tickets, bringing cheaper award tickets to select routes around the world. The LGA-BOS route frequently has these awards, and tickets are priced at just 5,000 AAdvantage miles one-way in economy.

You can find Economy Web Special fares as you would any other American Airlines award ticket: just search on the American website, simply input your dates and check the Redeem Miles box, and then look for the Economy Web Special  box for the lowest priced award ticket.

Hot Tip:  Economy Web Special fares are only bookable online and cannot be changed without a fee. However, mileage redeposit fees are waived for Executive Platinum members .

Do note that Economy Web Special award tickets are only available on specific dates and may not be permanently offered on this route. Thankfully, though, the NYC to Boston route prices as a short-haul award ticket when Economy Web Special fares aren’t available. In this case, a standard MileSAAver award ticket costs just 7,500 AAdvantage miles one-way .

Marriott points transfer to American Airlines AAdvantage at a 3:1 ratio, with a 5,000-mile bonus for all 60,000 point (20,000 AAdvantage mile) transfers. If you need more miles to start planning your trip, explore our full guide to how to earn lots of AAdvantage miles .

Booking Cheap United Awards Between EWR and BOS with United

Like American, United Airlines and its MileagePlus loyalty program offer discounted NYC to Boston award tickets from its EWR hub. In fact, United has started matching American Airlines, and Saver award tickets can be booked for as low as 5,000 United MileagePlus miles one-way .

This pricing has come to light after United began implementing dynamic award pricing on its tickets, so you may see tickets price slightly above this low price-point. For example, when booking 3 months out, you’ll find fares ranging from 5,000 to 9,000 MileagePlus miles one-way .

Hot Tip: United Airlines’ co-branded credit cardholders and MileagePlus Premier Elite status members have expanded access to low-cost awards.

You can transfer miles to United MileagePlus from Chase Ultimate Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy at varying rates. There’s a slew of other ways to earn extra MileagePlus miles , too.

With so much competition on the route, NYC to Boston fares can often be quite cheap. In fact, you can find tickets as low as $59 one-way when booking over a month in advance. You may find that these low fares make little sense to book with points — especially if you plan to use United or American miles.

However, there is a way to justify covering low-priced cash tickets with points: the Chase Travel Portal .

This portal lets Chase cardholders redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards points towards any paid flight available on Expedia. Cardholders of the Chase Sapphire Reserve ®  can redeem their points for 1.5 cents per point while those with the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® card and Ink Business Preferred ® Credit Card  can redeem for 1.25 cents per point .

All other personal Chase-branded cardholders can redeem for 1.0 cents per point .

Booking NYC-BOS with the Chase Travel Portal

So, if you’re a cardholder of the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, you can redeem just 3,886 Ultimate Rewards points for a $59 JFK-BOS flight on American Airlines. This is significantly cheaper than booking with AAdvantage miles, and since you’re essentially buying a paid ticket, you’ll still earn AAdvantage miles on this ticket.

Note that cardholders of the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card  can redeem ThankYou Points for paid flights through the Citi ThankYou Travel Center at 1.25 cents per point . This portal should show similar flights as the Chase Travel Portal, and you still earn miles on your tickets.

Bottom line: Make sure to add your frequent flyer number to tickets booked through the Chase Travel Portal. You’ll earn redeemable and elite status-qualifying miles on all flights.

JetBlue maintains focus cities at both JFK and BOS and runs frequent flights from all 3 NYC airports to BOS. Because of this, there’s a good chance that you’ll end up on a JetBlue plane for your next jump up or down the coast.

Like the Chase Travel Portal, JetBlue’s loyalty program, TrueBlue , prices award tickets based on the cost of the cash ticket. This means the more expensive a paid JetBlue ticket is, the more TrueBlue points it will cost.

You can transfer points to JetBlue TrueBlue from American Express Membership Rewards , Chase Ultimate Rewards , Citi ThankYou, and Marriott Bonvoy . However,  should you do this is a different question entirely.

Currently, we value JetBlue TrueBlue points at 1.25 cents per point and since cardholders of the Chase Sapphire Reserve card can redeem Ultimate Rewards points at 1.5 cents per point through the Chase Travel Portal, it’s not the best use of your miles to transfer your miles to TrueBlue .

However, don’t write off TrueBlue miles altogether — you should most definitely use an existing stash of points to cover your paid JetBlue flight, especially if you can find low-priced NYC to Boston tickets.

Amtrak Acela Express Train in Newark, New Jersey

Don’t want to head to the airport? Taking a train from New York’s Penn Station to Boston’s South Station on Amtrak can be an excellent option for your next journey. Standard train journeys take 4.5 hours between the cities, and the high-speed Acela Express option takes only 4 hours. When you consider time at the airport, this can be an excellent option — especially if you live near the train station.

Like airlines, Amtrak has its own loyalty program dubbed Amtrak Guest Rewards. The cost of an award train ticket depends on the cost of a paid ticket, and akin to JetBlue, the more a train ticket costs, the more the award ticket costs. Amtrak points are worth roughly 1.82 cents per point when redeemed on Acela routes and 1.92 when redeemed on standard Amtrak service .

For more information, check out our guide to finding cheap Amtrak tickets.

As you can see, there’s no shortage of ways to travel between New York City and Boston for free. Check the Chase Travel Portal first and then Delta Air Lines and other options to price compare. Since it’s such a short flight, the experience you get on all of these airlines will be relatively similar.

Remember, though: refrain from transferring new points to JetBlue TrueBlue, especially from Chase. These will generally give you a lower redemption rate than booking through the Chase Travel Portal and you won’t earn new points on the ticket.

Safe travels!

How to Travel from New York to Boston by Train, Bus, Car, and Plane

places to visit between nyc and boston

The iconic New England city of Boston , Massachusetts, is 215 miles northeast of New York City. Boston has a population of more than 690,000 and is one of the oldest cities in America. To get from New York City to Boston, there are several transportation options. Consider the pros and cons of each to choose the best transportation option for you. Advanced booking of many of these options can offer additional savings.

Although flying is considered the quickest option for getting from New York to Boston (with flight times of around an hour), flights can be pricy, and when you factor in time spent getting to the airport, going through security, and waiting for your flight, flying doesn't save that much time. Buses are often affordable, but trips can be lengthy—sometimes more than five hours once you've accounted for traffic. Driving can take just under four hours on a good day without traffic, but renting a car can be troublesome for visitors, especially since both Boston and New York City have robust and easy-to-use options for public transportation.

How to Get from New York to Boston

  • Train: 3 hours, 40 minutes, from $98 (Acela) or 4 hours, 20 minutes, from $56 (Amtrak)
  • Flight: 1 hour, from $98 (fastest)
  • Bus: 4 hours, 30 minutes, from $12 (budget-friendly)
  • Car: 3 hours, 50 minutes, 220 miles (354 kilometers)

Traveling by train to and from Boston and New York City is a quick, low-stress option. Trains go from Penn Station in Manhattan to Boston's South Station. The route is serviced by Amtrak, which offers the Acela service, a higher-speed train with costlier tickets, and regional Amtrak service on a train that makes more frequent stops. The latter can take up to five hours and include 15-20 stops, but tickets are less expensive—sometimes starting as low as $56 oneway. Meanwhile, the Acela can cost upwards of $98 oneway. These trains also offer Wi-Fi service.

You can purchase tickets in advance by  Amtrak  or in person at Penn Station . The biggest advantage of traveling this way is that Amtrak is quick and direct.

Bus service to and from New York City and Boston is an easy, affordable option. Trips can take four hours and up, depending on the traffic. The Greyhound buses depart from Port Authority Bus Terminal , while other bus services, like the  Bolt Bus  and Mega Bus , depart curbside, primarily from the west side of Manhattan. There are also different bus services, like Peter Pan , Lucky Star , and Flix Bus , that run this route. Each bus company offers many departures daily, sometimes hourly. A ticket per person can cost from $5 to $40 each way, making bus travel from New York to Boston one of the cheapest ways to travel.

The most significant advantage of bus travel is that it is cheap and has frequent departures. Most of the buses offer Wi-Fi service. The most significant disadvantage is that traffic can sometimes be unpredictable and it is not as comfortable as the train.

You can drive to and from Boston and New York City—the most direct route takes you through Connecticut on I-84 E to I-90 E in Massachusetts and is about 215 miles. The drive passes through New Haven or Hartford, Connecticut, both of which can be troublesome with traffic during rush hour or weekends. For most visitors to the region, it does not make a lot of sense to rent a car since you might not need a car in either city, and parking can be difficult and expensive. Plan on about five hours of travel time, though stops and traffic will add to the overall trip. Visitors to New York City can rent cars in Manhattan, although rates at the airports tend to be cheaper, if less convenient.

The biggest advantage to travel via car is that it can be a good value if you are traveling with a group or children, and there is no schedule to adhere to. Disadvantages include a pricey car rental, traffic and parking in either city can be a hassle. A day trip to Boston from New York City can be ambitious since car travel can take up to five hours, but it is doable. To make travel worthwhile and to enable you to get a seafood-packed bite or a hint of the rich history in Boston, an overnight trip might be a better idea.

Flying to and from Boston is the fastest way to travel. The flight takes about an hour, but that does not include time spent getting to and from the airport, checking bags, or clearing security. That said, some shuttle flights to and from New York City and Boston can be cheaper than the train and run frequently. Most major carriers, including JetBlue, Delta, United, and American Airlines, service the route, with one-way fares usually around $98—but sometimes even lower. Boston Logan International Airport  is the closest and most convenient airport to downtown Boston and the T train runs from the airport to downtown.

Travel by plane can be an advantage because it is fast, and can be less expensive than the train. Often the biggest disadvantages are dealing with airport hassles and factoring in the time, energy, and cost of getting to and from the airport.

What to See in Boston

More than 28 million people head to Boston each year, eager to explore this historical city. Boston played an essential role in the American Revolution, which can be explored by walking the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail, of which a self-guided tour can cover many of the famous landmarks. Other popular Boston attractions include Quincy Market, the Boston Museum of Science, and Fenway Park. Predictably, the city is well-known for excellent seafood, such as lobster rolls and clam chowder, and also has excellent Italian food .

Since we don’t have a lot of time off from work, we have to plan our vacation wisely. This Boston to New York City itinerary hits some highlights in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New York.

We spent a few days in Boston before heading south to New York City. It was a really fast paced week and there is a lot more you can do in these areas. Stay tuned for added information to this itinerary.

First stop: Boston

Boston has SO much to enjoy. My favorite thing about the Boston area is the history. Walking along the Freedom Trail and visiting the sites brings the history books to life. I really enjoyed learning more about our country.

Boston is one of the most walkable cities in America. However, some of the places you may want to visit are farther away than a few miles you may want to walk. We used a Hop on Hop off bus to tour the city for a few days. This makes it easier to get to Harvard and Fenway Park. Oh, and if you are in the area of Fenway Park, stop at Boston Burger Company to eat. You WON’T be disappointed.

View this post on Instagram Acorn street. Do you know why this is one of the most photographed streets in America? When you walk down this street you feel as though you are stepping back in time. Acorn Street is one of the last places to still have a cobblestone street. The Beacon Hill area is now one of Boston’s most expensive and desirable neighborhoods. It sure is beautiful, don’t ya think? A post shared by Tattling Tourist (@tattlingtourist) on Feb 4, 2018 at 3:59pm PST

Here’s a video of our trip to boston..

Heading south on 3a

Stop number one was the first Dunkin Donuts located in Quincy. We had noticed there were Dunkin Donuts all over Boston. I felt like there were more of them than Starbucks. This original location opened in 1950. I’m not sure if it was because Chris was hungry, but he said it was the best donut he had ever eaten.

Next stop: Plymouth

This is the town I read about in history class growing up where the Pilgrims landed. There’s a rock where they supposedly came upon shore. You have to remember that the landscape was probably different back then. But, the rock is there, protected.

Did you know the Pilgrims landed in Provincetown first? Then, after about 5 weeks, set sail and landed in Plymouth.

Plymouth Rock

There’s also a National Monument to the Forefathers here in Plymouth. Dedicated to the Pilgrims, it is actually the world’s largest freestanding solid granite monument. It was built in the late 1800s, took 30 years to build, and is 81 feet tall.

I really wanted to visit the Mayflower II that is located nearby. Unfortunately, the Plymoth Plantation is closed during the winter. In addition, the Mayflower II is currently being restored and will not be available until 2019.

National Monuments to the Forefathers

Searching for the Sandwich Police

The sole purpose of stopping in the town of Sandwich was to find the Sandwich police! Of course, it didn’t take long to find the police station to snap a quick picture. Now, I wish I had eaten a sandwich while in Sandwich!

Sandwich Police

Cape Code here we come!

Cape Cod is beautiful no matter what time of year you visit. But, beware if you visit during the winter time. Many restaurants and businesses are closed during the cold winter months.

We used our time wisely by avoiding the traffic and crowds. We had the whole beach to ourselves and we didn’t have to deal with any traffic on the 2 lane road.

I highly recommend visiting the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Not far from it is the lighthouse found on the Cape Cod chip bags.

In Provincetown, you will find the Pilgrim Monument that commemorates the Pilgrims’ first landfall in 1620 and the signing of the Mayflower Compact in Provincetown Harbor.

Rolling to Rhode Island

Next stop was Rhode Island. It was on my bucket list to stay in the Chanler on Cliff Walk. This accommodation is one of the original homes in the Cliff Walk area of Newport and was rumored to be one of the most romantic places to stay in America. I was really amazed by the beauty of the Chanler and Newport, as well.

Chanler at Cliff Walk

Many of the old homes are available for tours.  Some of these homes were abandoned because they were so big they were hard to maintain as just summer vacation homes. Plus, many of the owners didn’t want to vacation back to the same place every year. These homes became known as “white elephants.” We went on a Christmas tour of the Breakers house. It is named that because of the sound of the waves as they crash on the side of the cliffs.

Pizza in Connecticut

I am a BIG fan of Julia Roberts and have collected almost all of her movies. One of her earlier movies is called “Mystic Pizza.” In fact, the movie was shot in the town of Mystic, Connecticut. You can visit the pizza restaurant made famous by the movie.

Mystic Pizza Julia Roberts

The restaurant is decorated with pictures of Julia Roberts on the wall. The pizza is so yummy. I definitely recommend this quick stop for lunch on the way through Connecticut.

New York City!!!!!

There’s SO much to do in New York City. I guess that’s why it’s known as the city that never sleeps. 🙂 More to come on things to do in NYC on an upcoming post. So stayed tuned!

In the meantime, if you are planning a trip to New York City, make sure to add Black Tap to your list of places to eat. Go after 10 PM to avoid the long hour + wait. When we went to the SOHO location at that time, we were seated right away. Or, go a few minutes before the doors open to avoid the line (learned the hard way on our second trip there after waiting over an hour!).

A mere four-hour drive separates Boston from New York City, and in the span of roughly 230 miles between the two cities, drivers on I-95 will find ocean views and plenty of stops along the way to curb road trip hunger pangs. Cutting through the center of Rhode Island and skirting the coast of Connecticut, I-95 takes road trippers through several major cities and smaller towns, each with its own local flavor.

From an oasis of baked goods in Providence, RI to a small sandwich shop in Stamford, CT, there are opportunities to fill up on coffee, order breakfast sandwiches via a drive-thru, or take a break to stretch and enjoy waterfront views. Here now are the 10 places along the route that will help the trip fly by. The stops are arranged for a road trip from Boston to New York, but the same trip can be made in reverse. Southbound and northbound exits are noted when applicable, and do note each stop’s hours of operation.

Emma's Breakfast

Right off of exit 9 on I-93 (exit 8 northbound), Emma’s is either a good last stop before getting into Boston or a good first stop to beat traffic and kick off a road trip. There are fluffy pancakes (plain or fruit-filled) and standard breakfast fare, plus a dish called “super deluxe homefries,” which is a crispy combination of of broccoli, potatoes, and cheese. Definitely a no-frills spot, Emma’s is family-friendly and affordable (get one egg, home fries, and toast for $2.75; a stuffed omelet starts at $7.95). Note that the restaurant is cash only, and there is free parking out front. Emma’s is open for breakfast Wednesday through Saturday starting at 6:30 a.m. and on Sunday starting at 7 a.m. The restaurant closes at 2 p.m. during the week, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and by 1 p.m. on Sunday. Emma’s is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Emma’s Breakfast

Exchange Street Cafe

This no-frills sandwich shop (off of exit 29) has a wide selection of options for all three meals, from eggs and bagels to grinders, subs, and wraps served hot or cold, and ranging in price from $5.50 to $8.50. For sides, there are fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, and wings, and an “express lunch” option that comes with salad and breadsticks. Open from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday; Exchange Street is closed on Sundays.

Seven Stars Bakery

Seven Stars opened in 2001; in 2015, the bakery began milling its own grains, producing heartier, crustier loaves. As a road trip stop off exit 25, there are plenty of pastries (priced between $2 and $6) to grab and go, including seasonal vegetable danishes, fruit danishes, quiches, cookies, muffins, scones, and brownies. Seven Stars’ kouign amann, a French croissant-like pastry, is flaky and not too sweet. The asparagus quiche, which is fluffy with a crisp crust, would make a good brunch option. Grab a loaf of bread — from Italian-style ciabatta and multigrain to sweet challah — for the road or to take back home. Seven Stars opens at 6:30 a.m. each weekday and 7 a.m. on weekends and serves until until 7 p.m. each night.

Seven Stars Bakery

Cafe Tempo Coffee House

Thanks to a drive-thru, Cafe Tempo is a quick and easy stop right off the highway (take exit 10A off I-95 south or exit 10 going north). Find a wide variety of coffee flavors, both iced and hot, and a large selection of bagels on the menu. The Greek bagel sandwich is a spinach bagel filled with eggs, feta, and tomato. It’s easy to bite through, making it good car food. There are also pastries, giant biscotti, and fruit parfaits. Cafe Tempo has plenty of parking, free wifi, a bathroom, and an outdoor seating area. The cafe is open from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Cafe Tempo Coffee House

Muddy Waters Cafe

This is a good caffeine stop in New London — exit 84S for southbound access or exit 83 going northbound — and there are gas stations nearby if needed. The baristas recommend the chocolate coconut iced coffee, which makes for a surprisingly good pick-me-up. Even if it’s meant to be a quick stop, Muddy Waters Cafe demands a bit more attention because of its decor and views. There’s a deck out back overlooking the water, and the interior is filled with movie posters, music paraphernalia, an old juke box, and board games. There’s free wifi and comfortable seating. On the food side, there are pastries, bagels, muffins, and cakes — and a $10 minimum credit card charge. Street parking is easy to find out front. Muddy Waters opens at 7 a.m. every week day and closes after lunch, usually around 3 p.m. but earlier on the weekends.

Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana

New Haven is a hub for powerhouse pizza places churning out pie after pie, and Frank Pepe is among Eater’s five “must-visit” spots . Frank Pepe’s has locations all over New England, but the Wooster Street restaurant is the original, and it serves small, medium, and large pies that are made to order. There are also salads and soft beverages, and the restaurant is open every day at 10:30 a.m., closing at 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

A bit north of the highway off exit 17, Bartaco is situated on the Saugatuck River. There is outdoor seating and an option to place an order online for takeout. Bartaco is open daily from 11 a.m. until 1 a.m. and until 2 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Magee's Curbside

A cross between a barbecue stand and a deli (off exit 8 going south or exit 7 going north) Magee’s sells a variety of items including sandwiches, burgers, and even fish tacos. Sandwich fillings include pulled pork, blackened or fried chicken, and pork belly; homemade potato chips, coleslaw, mac and cheese, and potato salad are among the sides, and there are churros and s’mores for dessert. Call ahead to order 15 minutes out and the food will be ready for a quick pick up. Find parking spots out front. Magee’s is open from 7 a.m until 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, but closes at 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Magee’s Curbside

Walter's Hot Dog Stand

Walter’s is a national registered historic landmark (off exit 18A) that first opened in 1919. The hot dogs are made with beef, pork, and veal, and are served cut in half on a toasted bun. Walter’s makes its own mustard, but the usual hot dog condiments are available as well. Also on the menu: New England clam chowder, french fries, curly fries, and waffle fries, plus soft drinks, milkshakes, ice cream soda, floats, and Italian ice. To the left of the building, there’s a wooded area with picnic tables and umbrellas. Street parking is available, and customers can place orders by calling ahead. Walter’s seems like a summer stop, but it’s open year-round from 11 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Walter’s Hot Dog Stand

Close to NY, and off exit 16 in both directions, this isn’t a must-taste option, but because it’s open 24 hours a day, has parking, and accepts credit cards, it might come in handy in a pinch, and could be a good stop if you’re trying to avoid traffic. Find reubens and gyros on the menu alongside fresh veggie wraps, which are easy to eat while driving.

Flau’jae johnson: angel reese and i ‘aren’t as close as we used to be’.

Things aren’t the same between Flau’Jae Johnson and Angel Reese after winning an NCAA title as teammates, when LSU beat Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2023.

During an exclusive interview with The Post, Johnson agreed with remarks Reese made last week when the Chicago Sky forward said they aren’t best friends anymore.

“Yeah, me and Angel, we aren’t as close as we used to be,” Johnson said when asked about their relationship Tuesday. “But I still support her 1000 percent. I was proud of her, just being in the W[NBA] and breaking records.

"Me and Angel, we aren’t as close as we used to be" @Flaujae told @jennalemoncelli about her current relationship with Angel Reese pic.twitter.com/NCbhftL35R — New York Post Sports (@nypostsports) September 10, 2024

Flau'jae Johnson #4 of the LSU Tigers reacts in a game against the UCLA Bruins during the first half in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament at MVP Arena on March 30, 2024 in Albany, New York.

“A lot of people said that she wouldn’t go to the W[NBA] and do all those things and they kinda hated on her. But I kinda knew that because I’d see it everyday in practice and I see the mentality that she has. So, it’s been dope [to watch her].”

Reese, who was selected by the Sky with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA draft, went on to average a double-double in her rookie campaign before suffering a season-ending wrist injury in a win over the Sparks on Sept. 6.

The All-Star forward said she was having surgery on her wrist Tuesday.

Tigers guard Flau'jae Johnson, left, celebrates with forward Angel Reese after defeating the Virginia Tech Hokies in semifinals of the women's Final Four of the 2023 NCAA Tournament at American Airlines Center on March 31, 2023.

Johnson stopped by The Post Studios in New York, along with star LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne, to promote “The Money Game,” a six-part docu-series streaming now on Prime Video — which gives an all-access look inside LSU’s Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) program for athletes, including Reese.

Former Heisman-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was selected by the Commanders with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, is also featured in the docu-series, along with LSU guard Trace Young and LSU hurdler Alia Armstrong, who are both fifth-year seniors.

Many were surprised to hear that Reese and Johnson’s relationship dwindled, as they were close during their time as teammates at LSU — while becoming two of the biggest athletes of the NIL era.

Flau'jae Johnson poses for a photo in The Post Studios on Sept. 10, 2024.

“I still support Flau’jae. We aren’t as close as we used to be,”  Reese said on her “Unapologetically Angel” podcast last week.

“And there’s no hard feelings or anything, but we aren’t as close as we used to be. That’s why people always expect us to still posting each other but we aren’t as close. It happens. You don’t have the best relationships with everybody and don’t always continue relationships with people. So, I wish her the best always. I’m always going to support her.”

Flau'jae Johnson performs onstage during the 2024 ESPY Awards at Dolby Theatre on July 11, 2024 in Hollywood, California.

The former teammates became household names at LSU after the NCAA ruled that student-athletes can profit monetarily from their NIL in 2021.

Reese, who signed an endorsement deal with Reebok last fall, added that she’s going to back to LSU “soon” to support the team.

Johnson — a rapper, who signed with JAY-Z’s Roc Nation in January — vehemently defended a tearful Reese when she faced backlash after the Tigers’ 94-87 loss to Iowa in the Elite Eight, which ended their hopes of a March Madness repeat in April.

Angel Reese #10, right, and Flau'jae Johnson #4 of the LSU Tigers soeak with the media after losing to the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Elite 8 round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament at MVP Arena on April 1, 2024 in Albany, New York.

Johnson explained at the time that Reese played a pivotal role in her leap from her freshman year to her sophomore campaign.

Johnson averaged 11.0 points as a freshman and played a major role in securing LSU’s first women’s basketball championship in program history, before improving to 14.9 points per game last season .

The Savannah, Ga., native is poised to fill a bigger role with LSU in her junior year with Reese gone and has said she’s ready for the bigger spotlight.
