The Black and Carolina Blue Tour  

Learn about Black life and history with this iconic UNC-Chapel Hill experience. Initially developed by Carolina students as part of an African American Studies course, this tour has introduced students and visitors to local histories of slavery, racism, memorialization and activism for more than 20 years. In 2023, the University Libraries revised and expanded the self-guided version of the tour, ensuring it remains accurate and accessible.  

Climbing The Hill: Women in the History of UNC  

Explore women’s history at Carolina through the spaces in which it took place. Originally curated by students in a Carolina history course, the tour explores women’s experiences as students, workers and community members on campus as they were shaped by race, class, age and sexuality. How Cancer Tumors Hijack the Body’s Defense System

In the May 10 issue of Science Immunology , researchers unveil a previously unknown tactic used by cancer tumors to dodge the body’s immune system.  

The analysis by cancer researchers at Duke University School of Medicine and University of North Carolina Chapel Hill is a step forward in understanding why some cancers do not respond to immunotherapy.  

They discovered that a specific type of cell that usually rallies to help the body fight foreign invaders, including cancer cells, can suddenly operate differently, and instead allow cancer to grow unchecked. Using mouse models, the team found immunotolerant dendritic cells can be successfully manipulated to prevent their rogue transformation. 

“By disrupting the mechanisms that enable tumors to evade immune detection, we aim to expand the cancer patient population who can benefit from immunotherapy,” said senior study author and medical oncologist Brent A. Hanks, MD, PhD , who has appointments in the Department of Medicine and Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology at Duke.  

What causes the dendritic cells to shift roles starts with a strategy employed by tumors. Cancer tumors produce high levels of lactate that can reprogram healthy dendritic cells into what scientists termed “mregDCs.”

Unlike their healthy counterparts, mregDCs act as traitors, suppressing the body’s immune response, making it harder for the body to attack cancer cells.  

“Probably the most surprising finding was that mregDCs aren’t just poor stimulators of T cells needed for an immune response, but they are also capable of blocking other conventional cells from doing their job of initiating an immune response,” said lead study author Michael P. Plebanek, PhD, a postdoctoral associate and cancer immunologist at Duke School of Medicine.  

But researchers identified a molecular lynchpin in the plot: The lactate secreted by tumors activates a protein called SREBP2 within dendritic cells. This protein transforms normally helpful cells into something sinister.  

By blocking the SREBP2 protein, either through targeted drugs or genetic silencing in mouse models of melanoma, researchers were able to prevent the transformation of dendritic cells into mregDCs.  

This not only bolstered the ability to fight tumors but also significantly enhanced the efficacy of immunotherapy treatments, according to the study.  

Authors note that tumors likely employ a variety of strategies to evade immune detection. But the discovery could lead to a new approach for targeted cancer therapies.

DeVito, MD; and Balamayooran Theivanth, PhD, of the Duke Department of Medicine Division of Medical Oncology; Georgia Beasley, MD, in the Duke Department of Surgery and Alisha Holtzhausen, PhD, of UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine.

Graduating tour guide welcomes visitors to campus

At the UNC Visitors Center, Kevin Rivera Araujo helps others “fall in love” with the place he calls home.

As the Carolina senior leads a tour through the UNC Visitors Center , he tells guests all about the nation’s first public university. He covers the basics — class sizes, research opportunities, student housing, campus history and University traditions — and makes sure they know the proper name for the school color.

“It’s not sky blue. It’s not baby blue. It’s not powder blue,” Rivera Araujo explains. “It’s Carolina Blue.”

Rivera Araujo, a double major in psychology and Romance languages, has been setting the record straight on the best shade of blue for the last two years. As he prepares to graduate, he says this job is a highlight of his time at Carolina.

“I wish I would’ve started earlier because I really love it here,” says Rivera Araujo.

He was born in Dobson, North Carolina, roughly 100 miles northwest of Chapel Hill, and grew up there with his Mexican family. A first-generation college student, he came to UNC-Chapel Hill as a Carolina Covenant scholar .

After his sophomore year, Rivera Araujo was looking for a work study position and came across an opening for a tour guide. His friends told him they could see him giving tours and talking about the school.

Why did they think the job was a good fit for him?

“Just being able to talk to people,” he says. “I think that perfectly marries what we have to do here at the Visitors Center. We see visitors from all over the country, all over North Carolina and even all around the world.”

That ability to connect with people from all over has been one of Rivera Araujo’s favorite parts of the job. Sometimes visitors come from as far away as Sydney, Australia. And sometimes they turn out to be neighbors, like when he met a group from Elkin, close to his hometown in Surry County.

“My people!” he told them. “You get what I’m saying when I say I grew up in the middle of the woods.”

Regardless of where his visitors come from, Rivera Araujo knows the impact he and his fellow tour guides can have on a person’s experience visiting the University.

Last year, a student from Brazil sent Rivera Araujo a tour thank you message that included an important update: He was going to be a Tar Heel, and Rivera Araujo’s “killer tour” helped sell him.

“I love to hear that because that’s what we do here,” Rivera Araujo says. “That’s our purpose: We really want to show you the school so you can also fall in love with it.”

Following graduation, Rivera Araujo plans to take some time off while pondering graduate school and other interests, like podcasting.

Graduation has him thinking back to his first semester at Carolina, when he struggled to find his way around campus during the height of the pandemic. Back then, he reached out to the leader of his virtual first-year orientation, who showed him around.

“I will always cherish that,” Rivera Araujo says. “It’s always a memory that I carry because it meant a lot to me that she took that time just to help me out.”

Years later, he’s paying it forward with tours of a campus he’s a bit more familiar with now.

“I would never change it for anything,” he says of coming to Carolina.

In so many words, he tells the University’s visitors the same.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has unveiled a new medical education building, Roper Hall. Designed by The S/L/A/M Collaborative (SLAM) and Flad Architects , the UNC School of Medicine’s new building intends to train new generations of physicians through dynamic and active modes of learning.

“We studied what medical students need to really succeed in today’s world and reverse-engineered a design that provides the space to prepare future physicians,” Kimberly Robidoux, higher education practice leader, SLAM, said in a statement. 

A notable feature of the 172,000-sf facility: It has no lecture halls. Instead, Roper Hall offers 16 seminar rooms and six medium-size classrooms. 

Roper Hall also features an active learning theater, which SLAM describes as the building’s crown jewel. The learning theater, which can house up to 240 people, serves the design emphasis on creating spaces for first- and second-year students to meet and work together. The learning theater doubles as an event space and has become the main location for the school’s annual Match Day, when students are paired with their residency programs.

To support the school’s active learning curriculum, SLAM has designed multiple simulation labs and a clinical skills center for inter-professional training. The simulation labs include large operating rooms and patient care bays with video monitoring to track student progress.

Focus group sessions with over 50 students and committees informed the eight-floor building. This engagement led to the creation of spaces such as the medical student commons—a lounge equipped with a kitchenette, ping-pong tables, TV screens, and banquette seating. Based on student feedback, the design team also incorporated a café and a fitness center.

The design draws on UNC’s surrounding landscape and community. On entry, terrazzo flooring contains crushed seashells that evoke North Carolina’s coast. A nod to the state’s many forests, wood treatments accentuate the active learning theater. And on every floor, large-format photography captures the state’s landscapes.
