Our Most Booked Kenya Safari Packages

Best photo safari destinations in kenya – the best african photo safaris packages.

Next, we share our best-rated Kenya safari packages and destinations  that give you a chance to capture awe-inspiring photos and videos.

 1. African Photo safari packages Destination #1. Masai Mara National Reserve

The Masai Mara has a soul of its own. A soul kept alive by its vibrant, completely dumbfounding flora and fauna. The park is one of the reasons the Great Rift Valley is so great. Its open grassland a magnificence your camera ought to capture.

A selfless giver, the park shares her immense beauty with you, with over 95 mammal species and 400 bird species to see. The sunny weather makes those Kenya wildlife photos even better, the sunrise and sunset an opportunity you would hate to miss.

For the wildlife and scenery, we have the park’s western escarpments with animals such as the Big Five, cheetahs, hyenas, elands, zebras, and impalas frequenting the place.

The Mara Triangle is as fascinating, a point the spectacular Mara River helps put across. To capture is the great wildebeest migration, an occasion graced by over a million wildebeests and an almost equal number of zebras and impalas.

The adrenaline-packed experience is levitating, those hippo-pounce-on-zebra shots a treasure you will thank us for. For aerial shots, we have the balloon ride, which is, in all honesty, the best way to experience the park.

Also, fun to capture are the Maasais in their cultural villages.

 2. African Photo Safari Tours Destination #2. Amboseli National Park

Mount Kilimanjaro has to be the highlight of every Amboseli visit. The view from there is effortless, with the park offering Africa’s highest-peaking mountain in angles any photographer would kill for.

Not one for boring, the park makes sure to keep your photo safari in Kenya as interesting as possible by entertaining you to its five incredibly different habitats. To make sure your Kenya wildlife photos are wholesome is the park’s observational hill. The hill overlooking the swamp gives you a bird’s eye view of the park, giving you a go at those prize-worthy shots.

To capture is the large wildlife population, which heightens the park’s appeal to insane lengths. Elephants, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, lions, buffaloes, over 600 bird species, and wild dogs being among the must-sees. The elephant population is the highest in the region, their number nearing the 900 mark.

An interaction with the local Maasai people is also on the cards.

 3. Kenya Photography Safari Destination #3. Lake Nakuru National Park

Mix that flamingo pink with a light baby blue, and you get Lake Nakuru… And there, right by its shores, is Lake Nakuru National Park . The KWS managed park spreads its magnificence over 69.5 square miles of land, right at the floors of the Great Rift Valley. To prove worthy of the title ‘best photo safari destination in Kenya , is its seamless scenery encompassing picturesque marshy and woody grasslands.

There are over 56 different mammal species to photograph, some of which include the waterbucks, impalas, warthogs, Rothschild giraffes, white rhinos, the highly endangered black rhino, and the buffaloes. The nearby Lake Nakuru is a definite attraction largely for its popular flamingo-filled waters. Also to see are the great Makalia falls, known to draw in thousands of the 450 bird species in the park. To help with that perfect shot are the lion hill, baboon cliff, and out-of-Africa viewpoints.

 4. Kenya Photography Safari Destination #4. Hell’s Gate National Park

To have inspired a movie as great as the Lion King is enough explanation as to why the Hell’s Gate National Park made it to our list of the best Kenya tourist attractions. The scenery here is bananas, and the ambiance is the park’s way of reminding us why she is more than just rock.

Your fingers will go numb at the camera flicking, for there’s not an inch of the 68.25km Squares you will not want to capture. With the scenery comes soaring cliffs, water emptied gorges, rock towers, scrubbed volcanoes, and geothermal streams. To top it off is a wide array of wildlife, which includes the hartebeest, buffalo, baboon, zebras, Thompson gazelles, reedbucks, antelopes, and over 100 bird species.

Also captured are the hot springs, Olkaria Geothermal Station, Mervyn Carnelly Hide, raptor nesting, and the tourist circuits. The photos you can take during game riding, rock climbing, biking, or hiking here.

 5. Kenya Photography Safari Trips Destination #5. Diani Beach Kenya

There’s nothing quite like it. Nothing even close to the Diani magnificence. With as small as a 17 km shoreline, the beach, with its impeccable white-sandy beach, has managed to top the World Heritage list of ‘best beaches in Africa’ for 5 years in a row now.

Its waters are a bewitching blue, its overall scenery a thing that will have your camera running wild. Blending perfectly with the insane amounts of Diani blue is the lush green forest that is the very life of this beach.

A must-see is the coral mosque overlooking the beach, and the monkey sanctuary just next by. A boat ride will see you to the Shimba Hills, turtle information center, and Wasini Islands, which are equally taking.

Boat rides, and activities such as kitesurfing, deep-sea diving, and skydiving, will help you capture this beauty.

 6. Best Photo Safari in Africa Destination #6. Lewa Downs

Lewa sits at the northern slopes of Mount Kenya with so much grace you’d be jealous. And there, from above it, brilliant views of the Samburu reserve, Mt. Ololokwe, and the great Ewaso Nyiro River.

A ridiculously gorgeous landscape coupled with a great wildlife variety is what makes this conservancy such a great Kenya photo safari destination . The Grevy’s Zebra population, for example, is the highest there is in the world, while the highly endangered black rhino population in the conservancy is the highest in East Africa. Other animals in the park include the sitatungas, big five, elephants, cheetahs, and the Oryx, among many others.

The conservancy’s open grasslands are remarkable, and to supplement them comes the gorgeous Lewa swamp, a stunning natural forest, and a view of the Mt. Kenya.

Also to see is the Ngare Ndare Forest, which is an amazing combination of lush greenery, a waterfall, river, and huge amounts of elephants.

 7. Photographic Safaris in Africa Destination #7. Aberdare National Park

If sensational was a place, then it would definitely look like the Aberdares. The park’s scenery is dreamlike, its open moorland and forested ravines the very definition of perfect. A must-see are its outstanding waterfalls, river valleys, and ridges.

Calling the park home is an array of black rhinos, buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks, olive baboons, hyenas, leopards, warthogs, and the colobus monkeys. Rarities in the parks include the African wild cat, Giant forest hog, bongo, and the serval cat.

A visit up the Karuru Waterfalls will have you interact with the over 250 bird species in the park. Common sightings include the sunbird, eagles, plovers, and the Francolins

 8. Photographic Safaris in Africa Destination #8. Ol Pejeta Conservancy

364 sq km in size, the Ol Pejeta is a wildlife conservancy cushioned between the slopes of the Mt. Kenya and those of the Aberdares. The conservancy’s beauty is boundless, its wildlife-to-area ratio beating that of any park or reserve in the country.

More than 1000 mammals call the conservancy home, as well as the big five and a large variety of the Grevy’s zebra, Jackson’s Hartebeest, cheetahs, and hyenas among many others.

A photo safari here gives you the chance to take home pictures of the only two remaining northern white rhinos in the world. Also to see are the highly endangered southern white rhinos and close to 80 white rhinos.

The Chimpanzee Sweetwater Sanctuary is also a delight. The sanctuary is a rescue for chimpanzees rescued from Central and West Africa.

The origin of safari, of romance under canvas on a vast African landscape, Kenya is where it all began. Today, its rich Maasai culture is woven into a classic safari experience that is centred around the annual wildebeest migration.

Our knowledge and experience of Kenya’s premier wildlife destinations allows us to craft journeys that hit exactly the right spots for photography, or hot-air ballooning, or watching the famous river crossings where predators lie in wait of an easy meal.

Kenya-map

Kenya top Destinations

The crowning glory of a Kenya safari is indeed the Masai Mara, but knowing where and when to plan your trip for the migration is key. Our most highly rated Mara destination is the Mara North Conservancy, where some of the country’s premier tented camps and luxury lodges are located, offering far superior, private encounters with wildlife in a very popular part of Kenya.

Beyond the hype of the great migration are Kenya’s equally as remarkable wilderness areas, like Amboseli National Park – land of the planet’s last Big Tuskers. Here, these exceptional elephants, carrying tusks in excess of 50kg roam across open plains with the famous icy peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. Truly breath-taking.

Kenya is the Africa of your imagination. Planet earth on an epic scale. A place that fills your nostrils, kisses your skin, tingles your spine.

We spent 10 incredible nights with Lance as our private guide in Kenya. We stopped over in Nairobi at the Giraffe Manor, a simply must do for everyone, visited the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage before making our way to the Mara North Conservancy. The Mara North was one of the most fabulous places I have ever visited. We saw lions on every drive, one of the best destinations if this is what you are looking for, as well as elephants, buffalo, multiple cheetah, day old lion cubs, leopard and even drove to the National Park for one day and saw two wildebeest crossings!I can highly recommend traveling with Lance. He got us into the best position multiple times and seemed to know what the animals were going to do even before they did. Nicola Ann

Project Description

male lion in the masai mara

Epic Kenya Photo Safari

From $14,950

Kenya is home to some of the most iconic wildlife photography destinations and none more so than Amboseli , Samburu and of course The Masai Mara . We believe that combining these three very different destinations will give you the most comprehensive itinerary especially when accompanied by the Pangolin Photo Hosts in custom vehicles with maximum three guests and one host in each!

Starting in Amboseli you will spend time photographing the animals (especially the elephants) traversing the reserve from the swamps to the woodlands hoping to frame them with the snow capped peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. Next up is the drier northern Samburu reserve which is home to unique species you are unlikely to see elsewhere – specifically The Samburu Special 5! Last, but not least, you will end this safari exploring the wide open plains of the Masai Mara in search of the big cats, endless vistas and stunning sunsets.

Dates & Rates

Suggested add ons.

Most international flights arrive in Nairobi in the late afternoon or early evening so we will arrange for you to be met at the Jomo Kenyatta International airport and taken to a The Tamarind hotel which is closer to Wilson Airport (domestic) – where we will depart from the morning. The Tamarind Hotel is very clean, serves good food, hot showers and comfy beds. Most importantly it’s less than a 15 mins transfer the next morning to catch our flight to Amboseli.

On the first night you will dine with your group at the Tamarind Hotel along with the Pangolin Photo Hosts where you will have the opportunity to ask any last minute questions and meet your fellow adventurers. We have limited the group sizes to a maximum of 12 with 4 Pangolin Photo Hosts leading the trip.

Please note that we prefer the Amboseli – Samburu – Mara routing for this safari as it fits in better with the Air Kenya timetable and drastically cuts down travel time between the destinations.

The flight time to Amboseli from Wilson is around an hour. We have made an arrangement with Air Kenya to allow us extra baggage, over and above our allotted 15kg, so you don’t need to worry about sacrificing clothing for camera gear. Our new total (including hand luggage/camera bag) is a generous 45kg!

When we land in Amboseli, we will be met by our expert guides and the game viewer vehicles (three guest per vehicle so plenty of room) which we will be using for the duration of our time here.

Wherever you are in Amboseli you will feel the presence of Mount Kilimanjaro which is such an iconic backdrop to your safari here. We have all seen images of large herds of elephants strolling across the plains in the foreground and that is certainly a shot you can hope to get here. Every day the larger mammals make their way back and forth across the plains between the marshlands (fed by water from the mountain) and the bushier areas where the food is more nutritious.  We can spend as much time as we need lining up that shot when the mountain is visible and for the rest of the time the reserve is ours to explore as we see fit.

We like to stay at Ol Tukai lodge in Amboseli as it is very central and once we leave the camp we are right in the middle of the action. The rooms are very comfortable and the food wholesome and plentiful. The lush gardens are an excellent place to relax during the heat of the day should we opt to split our day into a morning and afternoon game drive. Depending on sightings and conditions the Photo Hosts will decide if full day (with packed lunch) or morning and afternoon drives are the best options. More often than not its the latter.

Amboseli is a collection of diverse ecosystems from dusty desert-like open areas to large lakes filled with waterbirds. Lions, cheetah and hyena are found in good numbers (leopards less so) and there is always the chance of seeing one of Amboseli’s famous “tuskers” if they are around. These huge male elephants have a vast range and are not resident but with more than 20 Tuskers in the region the chances are pretty good that you will see one.

Check out Janine and Guts’ video report on Amboseli below:

To get to Samburu from Amboseli we will need to fly back to Wilson in the morning to get our connecting flight onwards to Samburu. Both flights are around an hour and even with the aircraft change the total travel time should be less than four hours getting us into Samburu in the early afternoon for a game drive.

Once again we will be met with the same style of vehicles as in Amboseli at the airstrip and your first impression will be just how different Samburu is to the grasslands of Amboseli. Samburu has harsher vegetation. More thorny and familiar to those who have been on safari in Southern Africa before. This difference in environment also means that the resident animals and birds are also different…and thats why we like to come and photograph here.

Samburu is home to the Samburu Tribe who are traditionally nomadic cattle farmers. They are also some of the proudest and striking of all of Kenya’s tribes. The warriors are adorned with elaborate beadwork and headdresses and are incredibly impressive..not to mention photogenic!

The wildlife is no less captivating including some rarer species that you are unlikely to see elsewhere and especially not all of them in the same place. These are affectionally known as the Samburu Special Five – Grevy’s Zebra (only 3000 left in the wild), The Reticulated Giraffe, the bizarre looking Gerenuk, Beisa Oryx and Somali Ostrich.

All the big cats are found in good numbers including leopards, lions, cheetah as well as some of the smaller predators like serval. There is a healthy population of elephants and prolific birdlife including highlights like Golden Starling, several large raptor species, Somali Bee-Eater and Vulturine Guinea Fowl.

Our camp of choice in Samburu is Larsen’s which has recently been refurbished. The spacious tents are placed along the river which fills after rains in the highlands around Mount Kenya. When it appears dry you can see herds of elephants digging down a few feet to get to the groundwater. Great to watch and photograph from your room. The camp is built under a forest of palm trees which keeps the rooms cool and there is an amazing pool to enjoy during the heat of the day.

Samburu is not a very large reserve so its more common to do early morning and late afternoon drives with a return to the camp during the day. Depending on wildlife sightings the Photo Hosts may decide to do a full day game drive however and a packed lunch will be arranged.

An underground hide has been constructed at Larsen’s which everyone will have access to for one evening during our time here. The hide is accessible on foot from within the camp so you can stay as late as you like….all night if you are up for it!

Check out Toby’s video report from Samburu here .

The Air Kenya flight schedule means that the flight from Samburu to The Mara is usually direct and takes around two hours.

Once again when you land at the Ol Kiombo airstrip in the middle of the Masai Mara you will be met by our final group of expert guides and a now familiar game viewers once more. We have allowed four night in the Masai Mara as it is so much larger than Amboseli and Samburu and there is more ground to cover and explore. Please remember that as this is a bespoke safari we can increase the number of nights at any one of the destinations should you feel you need more time.

Our base will be Mara Bush Camp which is right in the middle of the reserve. We use Mara Bush Camp for all our Great Migration hosted safaris in September and it’s a fantastic camp. Great rooms, attentive staff, delicious food and comfy beds….do you need any more?

During the day we have the freedom to explore The Masai Mara reserve as well as the Mara Triangle to the West. Our expert guide will have spent many many hours guiding here and will be up to date with latest sightings and animal movements. They will coordinate the day with the Pangolin Photo Hosts to make sure we get to see and photograph as much as possible.

This safari is obviously outside of the Migration season and although you wont see the huge herds of wildebeest and zebras it does mean that the predators tend to be more active as they have to work harder to find their prey. Expect to see plenty of big cats!

Recent changes in the rules about off-roading in the Masai Mara came into effect this year. It seems that we will be allowed to off road at special sightings like big cats in certain areas of the park. It must be said that this is very much a new (very welcome) rule and how exactly this is going to work may well change as we go along. It is certainly good news for us photographers who often need to move a few meters off road to get a great angle!

In The Mara its always nice to position oneself at the end of the day on one of the lower slopes with the chance of finishing the day with some sunset silhouettes. The Mara’s open grasslands, excellent road network and gentle rolling hills means that finding a horizon with animals in silhouette is very easy indeed. Iconic Masai Mara photography!

On the final day we will leave Mara Bush Camp after a hearty breakfast and take a circuitous route back to the airstrip for our mid morning flight back to Wilson. We will be more than happy to suggest additions to this safari such as gorilla trekking in Uganda, additional Kenya destinations like Shompole and Lewa and perhaps even travelling to Botswana via Victoria falls for an Ultimate Pan-Africa safari experience! We can design and arrange all of this for you. The possibilities are limitless.

Should you be travelling home instead we will get you to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta Airport, via an Airport Hotel day room if you need a place to relax before a late evening flight.

$14,950 per person sharing | $2,000 Single Supplement

Along with Pangolin Photo Hosts Guts Swanepoel, Janine Krayer , Charl Stols, Sabine Stols and William Steel we will be joined by our East African Specialist Andreas Knausenberger. Each of the sets of dates above will have room for a maximum of 12 guests thus a ratio of 3 guests per photo host in each vehicle. During the safari you will get to spend equal amounts of time with each of the attending photo hosts as they rotate through the vehicles.

Suggested Add-ons to The Ultimate Kenya Safari Please chat to your safari planner if any of these add-ons appeal to you.

Uganda for Gorillas, Chimps and Shoebills

Uganda is a wonderful country that is one of the best places in the world for primate encounters, namely gorillas and chimpanzees. There is spectacular birdlife too as well as the chance to see the incredible shoebill stork.

Come to Botswana

Kenya Airways has daily flights from Nairobi to Victoria Falls which is only two hours away from The Chobe. You can come to do some photography from our photo boats and then head further south to the Okavango Delta and the Kalahari.

Adding Cape Town is an Option

The same flight that goes from Nairobi to Victoria Falls continues to Cape Town which means you will arrive there just after lunch and just in time to check into a hotel and head out to wonder at Table Mountain while enjoying a refreshing “sundowner”.

The Beach in Kenya

Kenya has some amazing beaches along its Indian Ocean coastline with some amazing hotels should you want some post safari downtime (or get started on the editing!). Lamu on the north coast is a fascinating destination with stunning architecture, ancient cobbled streets, narrow alleyways and great sea from hotels.

With the extra baggage allowance that we have negotiated for you on this safari combined with the fact that you will have your own private vehicle means that there is really no need to deliberate over what photo gear to leave behind. What a lovely problem to have, eh?

One thing you wont need to bring is bean bags or any type of gimbal mount. The private game viewer that you will be in has a pop up roof lined with plenty of beanbags along the edges. There are also smaller beanbags in the cabin to rest your lenses on when shooting lower through the windows.

Please watch the video made by Charl and Sabine on the lenses they bring to the Masai Mara for the migration as their advice will apply to all three destinations in this Ultimate Kenyan Safari. Click here to watch.

After being met at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, your Africa wildlife photo safari begins as you are driven into the leafy suburbs of Karen. You will settle in to your luxury boutique hote l, just across the road from where Karen Blixen had her coffee farm. There is of course WiFi to let your loved ones know you have arrived safely.

Masai Mara photo safari

Special note: To get from the airport to your hotel, we take the southern bypass, so we do not go into Nairobi city at all on this safari.

After breakfast we transfer to a small airport out of town, called Wilson, for our flight to the great plains of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. An extra luggage allowance is included in the cost of this Kenya photo safari and for more on what equipment to bring, see the bottom of my Safari  FAQ page .

A short 40 minute flight on a scheduled charter will see you land on an airstrip in the heart of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. From the airstrip you will enjoy a short safari drive of approximately 15 minutes to our base camp for the next three nights.

Arriving at camp in time for lunch, you will be escorted to your very spacious luxury safari tent which has a private verandah, ensuite bathrooms and twin basins. Your camp is situated deep inside a beautiful riverine forest on the Mara River where the birdlife is prolific. Situated on this famous river in the heart of the reserve, you will literally feel your city stresses dissolve.

Located in the middle of the Masai Mara Game Reserve and in the middle of famous predator territories, like the Marsh Pride, you will spend the next few days exploring the incredible great plains of the Masai Mara. By basing ourselves in the heart of the reserve on this Kenya photo safari, we have no gate times to contend with and we are surrounded by 360 degrees of the best photographic opportunities in Africa. We are able to access the entire reserve, including the remoter parts, ensuring you get the full Masai Mara experience. With only three photographers onboard, you have maximum freedom to photograph out the left and the right, as we seek out unique thrilling photographic opportunities and lots and lots of predators.

Taking packed breakfasts with us allows us to follow predators hunting without needing to rush back to camp. You will indulge in some of the finest predator photography on offer anywhere in Africa and indeed in the world, as you photograph a wide array of predator sightings on your Kenya photo safari. It is not unusual to find a jackal den close to camp and the vast plains behind camp are dotted about with lone umbrella-shaped trees, making for a quintessential picture of Africa!

The Masai Mara is the photography mecca of Africa and on this Africa wildlife photography tour you will feel like you have stepped into a wildlife documentary.

Kenya photo safari - lions

Greg knows the Masai Mara intimately and will take you to the heart of the action and to the seldom seen far-flung and beautiful corners of the reserve, where you will enjoy a fine wilderness experience and be blown away by the beauty of Africa’s great plains .

A morning safari drive will take you to our next camp which is a luxury mobile camp that has been especially erected for you. You are now experiencing an Africa wildlife photography safari like Hemingway did! Your camp faces the great plains of East Africa and these are the most beautiful plains to be found in both the Masai Mara and the Serengeti reserves. You will receive a full safety briefing as, without any fences, predators roam freely. You did sign up for a predator safari right?

Your home for the next 3 nights is this intimate and superbly comfortable mobile camp on the great plains of East Africa.  This juxtaposition of camp locations, moving from the river to the plains, means that you will get the full Masai Mara experience with the associated photographic opportunities.

Kenya photographic safari - zebra

You will enjoy your meals alfresco on the great plains. The food is yummy and all cooked in the traditional safari style.

The photography is especially exciting in this part of the reserve as not only are predators abundant but the plains are exquisitely beautiful, offering you a chance to capture your animals in their environment . With the escarpment behind and the plains in front, dotted with umbrella-shaped trees, you can elevate your portfolio, making this a special Masai Mara photo safari that is different to all others.

There are no gate times to adhere to, nor are there long traveling distances as our camp is inside the beating heart of the reserve. Incredible sunsets, lone trees and Africa’s iconic animals on grassy plains are the order of the day! This is the Africa of your dreams.

Sitting close to the campfire at night, you will enjoy the starry African sky and a delicious dinner. Once safely escorted to your tent by your Maasai watchman, you will be lulled asleep by the sounds of the African night, including a possible roar from a lion.

For those of you not staying on in the Mara to do 3 nights in the Naboisho Conservancy , a last safari drive ends at the camp’s airstrip and a short 45 minute schedule charter will take you from the Masai Mara back to Wilson Airport, where transfers are pre-arranged to Jomo Kenyatta International, for your onward travel home. This is officially the end of your Africa wildlife photography safari but if you not ready to go home keep reading  about exciting ways to extend your safari as an Amboseli photo safari is only a short flight away.

The 2nd camp is a private mobile camp allowing you to photograph the predators and other iconic wildlife on the great plains of the Masai Mara. This camp has been specifically chosen so that you can photograph and experience the finest grass plains in all of East Africa. A private mobile safari camp is by far the best way to do an Africa wildlife photo safari.

– This Kenya photo safari is timed to coincide with the time of year when the migration has left. Not only are the tourist masses also gone but the predators are super hungry and active, making this one of the best Africa wildlife photography tours to do.

– The amount of general plains game like zebra, giraffe, gazelles, elephant, buffalo, hippo, warthog, jackal, eland, dikdik, kongoni (the list goes on and on) are in such abundance on this Africa wildlife photo safari that you will experience and photograph the absolute wildlife mecca of Africa.

Melting Pot bush camp

Description of KENYA: Wildlife Photography Safari

Kenya is world-renowned as a wildlife photography destination par excellence with a breathtaking range of often easily approachable mammals and birds in landscapes of immense beauty. Our unique wildlife photographic safari takes in two of Kenya’s finest game reserves, Nakuru National Park and the Maasai Mara. Everywhere pulsates with life, from the alkaline and freshwater lakes of the Rift Valley to the endless undulating grasslands of the legendary Maasai Mara, perhaps the best place on earth to see large mammals in abundance, where our photographic safari is timed to witness the Wildebeest migration.

We’ll spend two full days at Lake Nakuru National Park, home to thousands of flamingos that ring the soda lake – this surely being one of the great wildlife spectacles. The park  has an abundance of mammals. Here we’ll target Leopards lounging on tree limbs, and seek great photo opportunities of Rothschild’s Giraffe, Buffalo, Black and White Rhinos.

A boat ride along the shore of Lake Naivasha will take us close to African Spoonbills, Goliath Herons, African Jacanas, diminutive Malachite Kingfishers and majestic Fish Eagles, common inhabitants of the lakeshore as are hippos and Nile Crocodiles.

Our tour culminates with six full days in the world-renowned Maasai Mara National Reserve, encompassing nearly 600 square miles in southwest Kenya. This expansive savannah grasslands hosts exceptional populations of big and small cats, and serves as center stage for the ‘Great Migration’ of wildebeest and zebra. Our visit is timed to witness this spectacular phenomenon in action, when vast herds move steadily into the northern reaches of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. These determined grazers face tremendous obstacles in their quest for fresh grass, and many will fall to powerful predators and river crossings fraught with gigantic Nile Crocodiles.

Multiple wildlife drives facilitate ample opportunity to observe and photograph prides of lions, majestic elephants and plenty of giraffe, hyaena, gazelles, warthogs and more. We’ll focus on finding the elusive cats – cheetah, serval, and leopard. We’ll observe a mind-boggling assortment of birds including weavers, bee-eaters, rollers, sunbirds, hornbills, go-away-birds, guineafowl, bustards, secretary birds, raptors, and much more.

Throughout the safari, we will be discussing exposure, base settings, advanced features and more photographic techniques to help you capture the best images possible on one of the greatest places on earth! During breaks, opportunities for macro photography and post-processing discussions will be provided for those who desire to participate.

This once-in-a-lifetime East African extravaganza provides the ultimate opportunity to experience and photograph some of the most amazing animals on earth. I hope you can join us!

Focus: Photography, Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Scenery and macro when possible.

Day 4 :  Transfer to Lake Naivasha NP

Day 5 : Transfer to Maasai Mara

Day  6, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11:  Maasai Mara

From Nairobi, we transfer by road several hours north to Lake Nakuru National Park passing through the Great Rift Valley escarpment with a stop to admire and photograph this stunning landscape. Upon arrival at Nakuru National Park we embark on an afternoon game drive to preview the amazing wildlife of the park before dinner.

Day 2 & 3 : Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru is the most famous of the Rift Valley’s lakes, and we will have two full days to explore this wonderful small park, with very attractive Yellow-barked Acacias (fever trees) and magnificent escarpments.

The rich concentration of wildlife provides plenty to experience, observe and photograph. Changing water levels provide an assortment of wildlife that varies with conditions. The shallow edges of this unique saltwater body teems with Lesser and Greater Flamingo, and an assortment of waders and shorebirds, Great White and Pink-backed Pelicans, White-breasted and Long-tailed Cormorants, Yellow-billed Stork, Pied Avocet, Blacksmith Plovers and terns.

Mammals are abundant, including Buffalo, Zebra, Rothschild’s Giraffes, Waterbuck, Black-backed Jackals, Spotted Hyaena, Bat-eared Fox and Impala. A leisurely boat ride around the lake’s perimeter will show case African Fish Eagle, herons and egrets, Hamerkop, African Jacana, Malachite and Pied Kingfishers, and there is always a chance of being amongst a pod of hippos and seeing crocodiles up close!

Day 5 – Lake Naivasha National Park / Maasai Mara National Reserve

After breakfast we depart Naivasha and head for the southwest corner of Kenya to the world-renowned Maasai Mara National Reserve. We will settle in to our perfectly situated lodge and in the late afternoon enjoy the first of our wildlife drives as we traverse the savanna in search of wonderful photography opportunities. Basing ourselves in the heart of the park allows us to track the Wildebeest migration at the Mara’s nearby river crossing points.

Days 6 – 11 – Maasai Mara National Reserve

Situated at the northern end of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, the Maasai Mara National Reserve encompasses nearly 600 square miles of land, home to an incredible diversity of wildlife. We’ll take multiple game drives throughout our six-day visit, to maximize encounters with big game, birds and reptiles. Many animals will be close to our vehicle(s), providing excellent photographic opportunities.

These expansive savannah grasslands serve as center stage for the ‘Great Migration’ of wildebeest and zebra. Our visit is timed to witness this spectacular phenomenon in action, when vast herds move steadily into the northern reaches of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. We’ll keep an eye out for predator-prey interactions, when powerful big cats take down a hapless youngster, or a gigantic Nile Crocodile thrashes its victim at a river crossing.

The Mara is among the best places in Africa to see the ‘Big and Small Cats’ with nearly all the members well represented here. We’ll observe prides of lions and focus on finding elusive cheetah, serval and leopard. Herds of elephants lumber through vegetated areas, and schools of Hippopotamus bask in shallow pools along the river banks. Other mammals include Silver-backed Jackal, the delightful Bat-eared Fox, Banded Mongoose, Spotted Hyena, lively warthogs, gazelles, and Maasai Giraffe. Hundreds of bird species are present, including an assortment of weavers, bee-eaters, rollers, sunbirds, hornbills, go-away-birds, guineafowl, bustards, secretary birds, raptors, and many more. The experiences and photographic opportunities of the Maasai Mara are nearly boundless – there’s always something to see and snap!

Day 12 – Maasai Mara National Reserve / Nairobi

After breakfast, we pack luggage, and savor our last morning photographic drive in the Maasai Mara. We work our way out of the park and head back to Nairobi. We’ll arrive in late afternoon, and use day rooms to repack and freshen up before dinner, then transfer to Nairobi airport for overnight flight home.

This is a safari and as such we will concentrate on all the wildlife, as one would expect, the birds and mammals giving everyone time to view, experience and photograph them.   Easy wildlife viewing from the confines of our open top safari vehicle in some outstanding parks; though we expect to see about 450 bird species we will spend considerable time with the incredible mammals that make this part of the world unique and hope to come across about 50 species including the “Big 5” – elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard.

One or two hikes, though there will be little walking on this tour in the parks; midday breaks, when in the parks; a mostly pleasant and dry climate, breathtaking scenery and many excellent photographic opportunities. At Mt. Lodge, Baringo, Naro Moru and Mara West birding will be mainly on foot.

We will be using the typical safari ‘combo’ vehicles such as a 4X4 Safari Mini Bus or Land Cruise. There is a pop-up roof that enables one to stand up to view and photograph wildlife. We will have a maximum of six participants per vehicle as this will guarantee everyone a window seat.

Purchasing Flights

Do not purchase your flights until the trip has been confirmed to go.

Detailed Trip Information

Upon notification that final payment is due (120 days prior to departure for land based tours / 180 days for boat based tours), you will receive a trip package of detailed information for your tour.

Any additional information about the trip, including lodgings, contacts, participants, meeting locations, etc., will sent about 2 weeks prior to the trip departure, or after final payment is received for late registrants.

Travel Insurance

As with all tours, we recommend purchasing Travel Insurance to help cover your investment, for covered reasons. Please see our section on Travel Insurance .

Passport & Visa

US Citizens may require a visa to enter certain foreign countries. See above for any required visa information.

Participants arriving to the USA from a foreign country may need to get a travel visa to enter the United States. Be sure to check the requirements for your country of origin.

Itinerary Changes

The trip itinerary is developed many months ahead of time. Occasionally, despite our best planning, changes may occur during the trip, or we may be forced to alter our plans. Changes may occur because of weather, road conditions, safety concerns or other circumstances. In these situations, it is the leader(s) responsibility to carefully consider and implement appropriate alternatives. Any additional costs incurred because of changes will be the responsibility of each individual participant. Refunds will not be issued as a result of itinerary changes.

When you think of kenya, what comes to your mind.

Kenya – safari, seeing Masai Mara with the great migration, many wild animals, photography tours, and much more. Did you know that Kenya has 24 national parks, 15 national reserves, 6 marine parks, plus many private conservancies?

Each area of Kenya, be it north, east, west or south, have their own unique landscapes, fascinating wildlife, wonderful people, and excellent accommodations.

Our luxury safari photo tour in Kenya will take you to the southern part, to the beautiful and excellent National Parks of Tsavo East, Tsavo West, and Amboseli.

Safari Photo Tour Kenya

Why is tsavo east national park special.

  • Tsavo East National Park is nine times larger than the Masai Mara and still has an authentic wilderness feel.
  • Tsavo’s vast open plains are home to large herds of buffalos and elephants, along with lions, and many other animals, such as cheetah, giraffe, hippo, hyena, jackal, dwarf mongoose, zebra or leopard – just to name a few.
  • This park also includes species that only occur here, such as the strange yet beautiful gerenuk, also known as the giraffe antelope.
  • Tsavo East has an advantage over other parks as it is more “off the beaten path,” and you will not find the crowds of tourists that can happen in the Masai Mara. Here in Tsavo East, you can go on a game drive for hours and not see another safari vehicle.
  • This park’s other bonus points are the wide-open plains and the distinct red earth, making it easier to spot and photograph wildlife. The colors of the golden grasses and green bushes combined with the rich red soil can really make your photos pop and even more beautiful!

Tsavo East National Park

Where will we stay in tsavo east on this safari in kenya.

Our camp in Tsavo East National Park is special. It is located inside the park and open to the wilderness. The large and beautiful tented rooms look out to a fantastic waterhole that is a magnet for elephants and other wildlife. The camp also has a watchtower that offers excellent views of the waterhole and the surrounding plain.

From Tsavo East we will go to Tsavo West National Park.

Tsavo West National Park

Why is tsavo west special.

  • Even though this park shares the name with Tsavo East, its landscapes are completely different. Tsavo West National Park has more hilly geography with dramatic volcanic boulders and grassy valleys dotted with acacia trees.
  • The park is home to all the usual African wildlife . What is the typical wildlife? Well, such as lions , leopards, hyenas, giraffes, elephants, buffalos, etc. There are also fascinating species such as the tiny Dik-Dik antelope, the chubby-looking rock hyrax, the critically endangered wild dog , and many bird species.

Early morning this leopard was strolling through the bush to find some prey. The animal went on an old termite hill to have a better overview of its territory.

Where will we stay in Tsavo West?

Our lodge in Tsavo West has large comfortable rooms and is located inside the park. This lodge has a main deck that boasts the best sunset views along with an amazing view of a very busy waterhole, frequented day and night by many different animals.

After Tsavo West we will go to Amboseli National Park.

Amboseli National Park

Why is amboseli special.

  • Amboseli National Park is one of Africa’s most iconic parks , with the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro presiding in the background and home to some of Africa’s last remaining “Big Tuskers .” It is a true privilege to be able to see and photograph these majestic elephants with the longest tusks.
  • Amboseli National Park is one of the few places in Africa where you can still see large herds of elephants of more than 20 elephants.
  • It is also home to lions, buffalos, cheetahs, hyenas, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, hippos, amongst all the other very varied wild animals that roam this truly incredible park.
  • If we are lucky, we might even get a glimpse of the rare black serval!

These two giraffes create an archway for a little zebra foal. The mother and herd of the zebra were to the right side grazing.

Where will we stay in Amboseli National Park?

Our lodge in Amboseli is located inside the park in one of the most wildlife-rich areas of Amboseli. That location gives us the advantage of having wildlife on our doorstep!

We will visit the Nairobi National Park on our last day in Kenya. This is a unique park as it’s the only protected area globally with such a large variety of wildlife so close to a capital city.

Here you can expect to see and get amazing photos of wildlife in the wide-open plains with the Nairobi skyline in the background.

KENYA | MAASAI MARA SAFARI

Amboseli national park, samburu & maasai mara game reserves, fulfill your dream of photographing africa’s wildlife in all its glory..

Join us as we embark on an adventurous wildlife tour of Kenya to witness its vast fauna from some of its best National Parks. Our 13-day Kenya Wildlife Photo Safari is all set to take you on a journey through the African Savanna. Here, the sky with its changing hues is ready to blow your minds and treat your eyes with its unmatched beauty. While the far lying horizon creates a picturesque image before us, it also excites us with the subjects that range from ‘The Big Five’ to African Civets and Grey Crowned Crane, which is unique to Africa.

For this itinerary, we have chosen National Parks which are unique in their own way. While the visit to Amboseli takes you through vast open plains and the view of Mount Kilimanjaro, Maasai Mara will enrich your experience with its huge population of lion, African leopard, cheetah, and African Bush elephant. In addition to these world-famous conservations, this wildlife adventure takes you to the off-beat destination of Samburu Game Reserve. Get to see the Samburu Special Five – Gerenuk, Beisa Oryx, Grevy’s Zebra, reticulated Giraffe, and Somali Ostrich. Although our focus will be on the rich wildebeest of Africa, you will also experience and capture the ethnic culture and traditions of its people and their lifestyle, cuisine, and livelihood. Experience this unique world on our 13-day Kenya Wildlife Photo Adventure, and take away a lifetime of memories.

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations carefully planned for the best light but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Kenya maasai mara   13 days, day 1 | nairobi.

After your arrival in Nairobi*, we begin our tour with a meet-n-greet in the lobby of our hotel.. We will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. Our guide will also give a few helpful tips on wildlife photography in preparation for our time together. During a group dinner, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques.

*Airport transfer from Jomo Kenyatta international Airport is included. (D)

Day 2 | Nairobi - Amboseli National Park

We begin our journey with an early morning flight to Amboseli National Park, driving through the scenic southern part of Kenya towards Namanga, on the Kenya-Tanzania border. We’ll arrive at our lodge just in time for lunch. After a brief rest we’ll take our first afternoon game drive in this scenic park, known for its abundant wildlife.  (B, L, D)

Day 3 & 4 | Amboseli National Park

Days 3 & 4 will be exciting, as we spend our time in Amboseli National Park. Each day we will be up before dawn so that we can experience and photograph the excellent wildlife opportunities, as well as a truly unprecedented view of the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro. After, we’ll return to our lodge for breakfast. You may opt for an additional game drive after breakfast to visit a swamp with its magnificent wildlife, or simply relax at your lodge and take in the African wilderness. In the afternoon we’ll depart for our game drives in anticipation of seeing the “BIG FIVE”.  (B, L, D)

Day 5 | Amboseli National Park - Samburu Game Reserve

After breakfast we will depart for Amboseli airstrip for our flight with Safarilink to Samburu National Reserve, connecting in Nairobi. Upon arrival we’ll transfer to our camp for check-in and lunch. After lunch, we’ll enjoy a wonderful afternoon game drive in the reserve. (B, L, D)

Day 6 & 7 | Samburu Game Reserve

This beautiful untouched area is known for its large herds of elephants and elusive leopards as well as northern endemic species including the Grevy zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and the beisa oryx. The Samburu people were attracted to this region because of the Ewaso Nyiro River, which provides water for their herds. (B, L, D)

Day 8 | Samburu Game Reserve - Maasai Mara Game Reserve

After breakfast we will transfer to the Samburu airstrip for our flight with Safarilink to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, often referred to as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of Kenya’s wildlife reserves. Upon Arrival in Maasai Mara, we will be transferred to our camp for check-in and lunch. After lunch, we will enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Mara. (B, L, D)

Day 9-12 | Maasai Mara Game Reserve

We’ll spend the next 4 days with unlimited game drives exploring the Mara, home to the proud and traditional Maasai tribe. The Mara is more than just the most popular wildlife park in Kenya, it is the reason why so many adventurers visit Kenya, and return for a second time.

This is a classic African savanna, and the sheer density of wildlife is amazing. Gazelle, wildebeest and zebra graze in large numbers, and where prey is found, so are predators. Watered by the Mara River and its tributary the Talek, the park is compromised of 583 sq. miles (1510 sq. km) of open grassland tucked away in the south west corner of the country. In the Mara you will see an astonishing amount of wildlife, including the big cats. Here, lions are found everywhere in large prides, and we’ll often see them hunting. Cheetahs and leopards are a little harder to spot, but are still fairly common. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras and hippos also exist in large numbers.

When we’re not shooting wildlife, we’ll be exploring the Maasai culture and photographing the people, wherever possible. In the evening we celebrate with a wonderful ‘Farewell Dinner’ at our camp. (B, L, D)

Day 13 | Return to Nairobi

On our last day we head out for our last early morning game drive to further explore the reserve before we bid it farewell. After breakfast, we’ll transfer to Olkiombo Airstrip for our morning flight back to Nairobi. Upon arrival at Wilson Airport, transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and bid you farewell. If your flight is not until the evening, and you’ve booked a late departure hotel room, we’ll be happy to drop you at your hotel before saying goodbye. (B)

Kenya Photo Safari

Trip Overview

Sold Out! Kenya has long been Africa’s most storied safari destination. Known for its legendary wildlife and evocative landscapes, Kenya offers photographers countless opportunities to capture iconic images of Africa: Graceful giraffes browsing in acacia trees, elephants traversing the savanna, stealthy lions stalking gazelle, proud Maasai bedecked in ceremonial beadwork.  This 10-day photo safari is designed for photographers of every level using equipment of all levels… including mobile phones.  A professional photographer will be with us the entire trip giving personal attention and support and helping us enhance our photos.

Days 1 – 2

Arrivals – 2 nights Nairobi Eka Hotel

Upon arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), you will be met by our representative and transferred to  Eka Hotel for a two-night stay. Check in and get settled before perhaps meeting up with the rest of the group for dinner (All meals on your own account this day). Wake up and enjoy breakfast and around 10:00am we will depart for  David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust . for the 11-12noon visit.

This will be followed by a visit to Karen Blixen’s former home (now a  museum )  with absolutely stunning views of the Ngong Hills made famous in her book Out Of Africa and includes lunch at Tamambo. After lunch we will visit the  Giraffe Centre after which we will be dropped off at Eka Hotel in time to review your photos of the day, rest and have dinner. (B, L)

Eka Hotel

Days 3 – 4

Off to Amboseli National Park

Driving out of Nairobi and heading south east, we will have about a four and half hour drive arriving at  Amboseli National Park .  Crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, the park is one of Kenya’s most popular parks. The name “Amboseli” comes from a Maasai word meaning “salty dust” and it is one of the best places in Africa to view large herds of elephants up close.

Nature lovers can explore five different habitats here ranging from the dried-up bed of Lake Amboseli, wetlands with sulphur springs, the savannah and woodlands. We can also visit the local Maasai community who live around the park and experience their authentic culture.

We’ll stay at  Ol Tukai Lodge  With spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the golden plains, Ol Tukai Lodge is a charming, contemporary retreat situated within the pristine Amboseli National Park. Filled with a quintessential African atmosphere and set amidst beautifully manicured lawns, the lodge’s luxury chalets offer uninterrupted views of the tranquil wilderness of the park or the snow-capped mountain in the distance. Beautifully appointed and inviting, the chalets boast private terraces where we’ll make the most of our spectacular surroundings. (B, L, D)

Days 5 – 6

Ol Pejeta Conservancy

After Breakfast on the morning of the 17 th , we will drive back to Nairobi to Wilson Airport and fly north to central Kenya to  Ol Pejeta Conservancy   The Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a mosaic of grass plains, wooded grassland, Acacia woodland and evergreen thicket extending over 86,000 square miles!

Ol Pejeta boasts an astounding variety of animals including non-indigenous chimpanzees and the Big Five (the endangered black and white rhino, leopard, elephant, buffalo & lion). The combination of amazing wildlife and stunning views across the open plains guarantees an unforgettable safari experience.

Our Porini Rhino Camp  guide will collect us from the airstrip and transfer us to camp, our home for the next two nights were we will enjoy morning, evening and night time shared game drives and escorted walks with Maasai guides.

Rhinos

Days 7 – 9

To the Maasai Mara

On the morning of August 18 th , we will fly to the famous  Maasai Mara National Reserve   located in southwest Kenya along the Tanzania border.  Game viewing in the Masai Mara is excellent all year around thanks to the diverse population of resident game – including lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo – plus popular species like zebra, giraffe, hyena, eland and gazelle.

We will be there at a time when one of nature’s greatest spectacles, the Wildebeest Migration, should reach the Mara, however there are no guarantees as the migration is dependent on the rains. The migration is a dramatic mass movement of almost two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle in a seasonal annual cycle driven by rainfall. To reach the Mara’s fresh grazing, wildebeest make dramatic river crossings from Tanzania to feast on the Mara plains and regain their strength.

Our home for the next three nights is the distinctly unique  Mara Engai Lodge  ,nestled amongst pristine Kenyan Ravine forest on the Oloololo (Siria) Escarpment. Overlooking the amazing Masai Mara National Reserve and Wildebeest Migration Route, with around 120km of unbroken views across the vast savannah of the Masai Mara – it is simply breath-taking. In Maasai belief, Mara means the spotted Land, whilst Engai is the Maasai God who created what we have labeled as the 7th wonder of the world.

Wonder at the most amazing views over the Masai Mara and Great Migration route from your own private veranda. Indulge in fine dining, with delicious treats made from fresh produce from the lodges organic gardens. Get back to nature on thrilling game drives and experience  thousands of years of Maasai tradition. Then before you sink into your large comfortable bed, take a look up at the mass of twinkling stars in the clear African sky — it’s something everyone should should see at least once in their lifetime.

After packing our things and saying our “Farewells” we’ll fly from Maasai Mara back to Nairobi & be transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for our international flights home.

Client Testimonials

Peter Farmer UK

Thank you Stu for such a memorable photo safari.

WILD4 provided a totally professional service, from the pre-safari preparation to the sighting and photographing of so many animals and birds.  At all stages, your team provided first-class support and advice.  The package you provide is superb and that is why I am booking another safari with you.

Sue Green UK

Many thanks to Wild4 for a truly memorable trip.  Stu’s guidance and photography skills provided excellent opportunities to get some great shots.  His professionalism and commitment made the safari ‘special’.  Having only 3 photographers per vehicle made an incredible difference and there was plenty of time to shoot  - or just watch.

The accommodations and meals were excellent.  Many thanks to Justyna for her wonderful help on the admin side, making my booking a dream.

I have been on trips before but none quite so enjoyable as this one.

Would I go again?  Would I recommend to friends?  Without a doubt, a big YES to both!!

Sincere thanks again to you all.

George Cathcart USA

Wild4's photo safari to Botswana featured two expert guides, Stu Porter and Nkosi Sibanda and the abundant wildlife of four different Botswanan hot spots. Those features alone are worth the price of admission, particularly since they include vehicle modifications that ensure the best possible photographic experience.

We spent the first ten nights in expedition-style mobile camps, “roughing it” with bucket showers and drop toilets and listening to the leopards, elephants and hyenas wandering in and around the camp at night.  However, the expert staff made "roughing it" a pleasure, preparing perfect meals, including fresh-baked bread and cakes and ensuring that the camp was safe and clean.

We finished the 12-night trip in a luxury lodge on the Chobe River, where we photographed from a boat customised to accommodate serious photographers, in a waterway full of hippos and elephants and lined with Africa's most iconic birds.

If you can only go once to Africa, go to Botswana with Wild4 Photographic Safaris.  They will take care of every detail of your safari.  If you are an old Africa veteran, ditto.  You just can't go wrong with Wild4.

James Smith USA

We recently joined a Wild 4 African Photographic Safari. To put things simply, we were completely blown away.  Compared with others I’ve been on, this exceeded anything we had imagined, in so many ways.

Justyna handled all our travel and trip details with exceptional professionalism and always responded to even our most basic questions quickly and in a very detailed manner.  We were met by our photo guide Stu Porter, who I cannot say enough good things about.   His spotting ability and anticipation, together with his understanding of animal behavior and the ecosystem, produced an amazing wildlife experience.  He went to great lengths to ensure that we had the best chance of capturing a great photo, without compromising the rules of the park or the integrity of the animals. This made the trip so much more than just a “drive around and snap at whatever we see” kind of experience. In all honesty, I can’t imagine a better guide than Stu Porter.  We will be doing our future trips to Africa with Wild 4 and cannot recommend them highly enough.  Thank you so much for what a lot of people call “the trip of a lifetime”, although we feel that this is only the beginning of many trips of a lifetime.  Thank you, Wild 4!!

Andrew Oliver CANADA

For thirty-five years I have dreamed of going on a photographic safari in South Africa.  I have finally realised that dream and my hopes and expectations were surpassed in every way.

I researched extensively before settling on Wild4 Photo Safaris.  What an inspired choice that was!   This family company provides the perfect safari experience for photographers of every skill level.

Stu is a fine wild-life photographer and a first-class teacher.  His knowledge of the habitat and habits of the animals and birds to be found in Kruger National Park is simply encyclopaedic.  My 25-year-old daughter and I eagerly adapted to the early morning wake-up call, to go off into the wilds in one of Stu’s specially fitted jeeps, to catch the sunrise.

Every day brought its special moments and we returned home with thousands of photos to sort through and cherish for the memories they’ll bring back.

A safari with Wild 4 is a photographic experience with a master photographer, an initiation into the wonders of South African wildlife and spectacular landscapes - and an experience of friendship as everyone aboard the jeep bonds in common purpose.

Everything about Wild 4 is first class.  The organization is superb, accommodations excellent, choices of locale perfect.  Our safari with Stu and Wild4 was truly the experience of a lifetime.

Madhumita Bishnu India

I did my first safari outside Indie and I started with Masai Mara in Kenya led by Stu & Mamai. An exceptional safari it was with thorough knowledge of the animal world by Stu, ensuring that proper lighting due to strategic location for best photography was there. Mamai ensured that the jeep stopped at the exact place where I could get the best photographs. The landscape was beautiful and the animals were equally majestic. I got to see BIG 5 which I learnt in this trip and I’m extremely thankful to Stu for the sightings. Very well thought out, professionally conducted was the safari. Stu shared on photography tips and animals characteristics too. I look forward to joining on another safari in not so distant future. Thank you Stu & Mamai

Helen Clarke AUSTRALIA

This was my third photographic trip to Africa, and I have to say the best!  Stu has great knowledge & passion for wildlife and photography that he is willing to share: I certainly learnt a lot.  The setup for photography in the vehicles is extremely well thought out.

There was an amazing variety of great photographic opportunities and I really enjoyed time spent with the animals.  I am very pleased with the results!

After coming away with renewed enthusiasm for photography, I am planning to do another trip with them soon.

Rita Daubeney UK

Thank you so much for the best safari I have ever been on and for your tremendous help with both the photography and Lightroom.

I now understand more about both than I ever have.  Everything was brilliant.

We were extraordinarily lucky with what we saw and my greatly improved technique means I will have memories that will last forever.

Your Wild4 attention to detail means that things run smoothly in a part of the world not always known for that.

I really can’t thank you and Justyna enough.

Shopping for a travel adventure on the Web is somewhat risky, but finally, I picked Wild4 Photographic Safaris for one reason: the vehicle!

It was obvious that this was an outfit that understood photographic details and the needs of serious wildlife photographers.  The vehicle takes just three photographers and features platforms to steady big lenses on both sides of the vehicle and loads of storage space and pockets for lenses, bodies, accessories, binoculars, field guides, water, etc.,   I can not imagine a better platform for photography in the bush.

What is not as obvious in the online description is that the vehicle comes equipped with Stu Porter, the Wild4 owner and guide.  Stu is a deceptively shy young man with an encyclopaedic knowledge of Kruger National Park and the eyes of an eagle!

Stu's knowledge and patience are seemingly infinite and he is aware of both of his passengers' needs and everything around us.  He does everything humanly possible to provide the opportunity for the best shot and what’s more, he can instruct even the most seasoned photographer on technique.

In short, Wild4 Photographic Safaris is all about the vehicle, with spacious seats, shooting platforms and Stu Porter as standard equipment.  You can't do better.

Thank you, Stu!

This was simply an outstanding photographic safari all round – by far the best that I have been on!  As a keen enthusiast photographer, looking to step up a level and enter 2 competitions later in the year, I could not have hoped for more.  Excellent!

The Wild4 team is very well organized and their prompt and helpful responses to queries pre-trip ensured they were easy and a pleasure to deal with.

Stu Porter can pitch his photographic tuition at any level and his attention to detail and enthusiasm was spot on throughout this trip.  Already comfortable with my own photo technique, I was surprised by just how much I learned.  I have easily adopted his full-on manual approach, every bit of which he was able to justify - a revelation!  I am quite picky, but I cannot praise these guys enough and I will be back.

Very many thanks to the whole team.

Kenya Photo Tours

Immortalized by award winning nature documentaries and hollywood blockbusters alike, kenya needs little introduction to wildlife photographers – the name safari is indeed synonymous with kenya.

This East African country offers the essence of an African wildlife photographic expedition, and besides the phenomenal wildlife, you can expect some of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Africa.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve & it’s conservancies are a photographer’s haven as they are teaming with some of Africa’s most sought-after and quintessential wildlife and landscapes. As a year-round safari destination, each season has its own captivating show waiting for you!

From November to February, the Mara is dazzling green and plays host to the calving season. Various antelope, Wildebeest and Zebra give birth, whose offspring become easy prey for the vast numbers of carnivores found in the reserve. This season is dubbed Big Cat season due to the many predator and prey interactions, and combined makes for fantastic photographic opportunities. With less vehicle numbers during this “off” season, grab a front row seat as the Mara puts on a show between predator and prey – welcome to ORYX’s Life of Predators Photo Safari and Women Only Mara Photo Safari!

Considered one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles, the Great Migration sees over 1.5 million Wildebeests and thousands of Zebra and Gazelles traverse a continuous circular route from the Maasai Mara to the Serengeti National Park. River crossings are a product of the Great Migration where fierce battles with monster crocodiles are often had and carnivores sit and wait for the opportune moment. This season is when our Best of the Mara Migration Photo Safari takes place for these awe-inspiring scenes and is considered a bucket list item for many!

In order to create the best possible photographic experience, we use only upmarket accommodations throughout our Kenya photography tours, and specially designed safari vehicles to optimise both game viewing and photography. Our small groups enjoy expert one-on-one on tutoring by a professional wildlife photographer and safari guide. Our Kenya photography tours are a truly one of a kind experience not to be missed!

African Photographic Safaris

If you’re a photography enthusiast, you might want to consider booking an African photographic safari. Photography is a hobby shared by many. However, taking great wildlife photos requires dedication. By joining a photographic tour you will avoid ending up with a group of people taking selfies at every sighting. Instead, you'll be with people sharing your passion and dedication. Even if you’re accomplished as a photographer in another field, there’s still much you can learn from an experienced wildlife photographer and the skills of anticipating animal behavior. Wildlife photography on safari is unique in its need for patience and bush etiquette. You should never cross the line where your photography interferes with an animal’s existence.

6 Questions About Photographic Safaris

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

safari photo kenya

Why should I choose an African photo safari?

“You would choose a photographic safari because you have a passion for taking great wildlife photos, and you want to develop the necessary skills. Depending on the type of tour, there might be tuition, tips and workshops. Most of all, a photographic tour is designed to facilitate great photos for photographers. This might mean that the choice of location and lodging is mainly based on photographic opportunities. It also means that you’ll be in great locations for photography when the light is at its best. This is usually around sunrise and sunset (you’ll be photographing rather than having sundowner drinks at that crucial time). As well, on a photo safari you’ll be with a group of fellow photographers. They will share your passion and understand the patience required in waiting for the best possible shot at sightings. Whether photography is new for you, or you’re a dedicated amateur, or a professional, it makes sense to book a photographic tour if photography is one of your main interests on safari.”

What level of skills is required?

“You won’t need any prior skills as such. Almost all photographic tours welcome anyone with an interest in photography. However, to make the most of the opportunities and tuition on the safari, familiarize yourself completely with your own photographic equipment before the trip. As well, freshen up on the basics of photography, such as the relationship of aperture and shutter speed. If you don’t have these basic skills, it might make sense to either take a small beginner’s course before the trip or do some reading or online learning to become familiar with the basics yourself. All of which means you can then practice applying these new skills while on tour on the safari.”

Can my non-photographer partner join me?

“Most photographic tours will welcome partners. Often couples don’t share the same interest in photography, yet it is only natural that they would prefer to go on safari together. Some tours offer optional activities for non-photographer partners. Mostly, partners are allowed to join the tour as long as they understand that the tour will be catering for photographers and their specific needs. Most partners of photographers will be used to this in any case, so this rarely creates any conflict. In fact, some partners of photographers make great assistants.”

Is a photo safari led by a photographer?

“Yes, a photo safari is usually led by a photographer. Some African photo safaris are led by high-profile photographers, but that usually comes at a hefty price. There are many photo safaris that are led by unknown photo enthusiasts with lots of experience of wildlife photography. Don’t be dazzled by the photographer’s CV, as the best photographers don’t always make the best guides or tutors. The main job of the photographic tour leader is to facilitate the best photography conditions for the group. A tour leader should never be tempted to put their own photography priorities above the needs of the group. As well as the tour leader’s own photography page or website, check out reviews and tour reports to get a feel for how the tour leader operates.”

Do I need special gear to join a photographic safari?

“When you join a photographic tour, you will be expected to have an SLR (Single Lens Reflex), DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) or mirrorless camera, as opposed to a point-and-shoot. Aside from that, there will be recommendations for equipment, but they are not compulsory. However, it doesn’t make sense to invest in a photo safari without the right gear for taking reasonable wildlife photos. It’s a good idea to have at least two lenses, including a telephoto lens. How big a telephoto lens you need depends a little on where you will go on safari. If off-road driving is allowed, as in many private reserves in southern Africa, you’ll be able to get quite close to animals. In these cases, a 200mm or 300mm lens will be sufficient. Even better is a 400mm or 500mm capacity lens, especially in national parks where off-road driving is not allowed. A convertor can also help to extend your range. It is great if you can avoid having to change lenses by having your lenses permanently set on different cameras. That way, you don’t lose time changing lenses during fast-moving action. Another downside of having to change lenses is that dust gets in and settles on the sensor. An off-camera flash set-up is great for night photography.”

What should I consider when choosing an African photo safari?

“There are many things to consider when choosing a photographic safari. First of all, is a photography safari what you need? Just because you like taking a few photos doesn’t mean you want to sit for hours at a sighting waiting for something to happen. Or that you would like to be up and out every day before breakfast. So, photographic safari packages are really better suited to quite serious photographers, as casual photographers might prefer a more relaxed approach to photography while on tour. However, if you’re a keen photographer, you might opt for a tailor-made private safari. You’ll miss out on any professional expertise, but you can structure the tour as you wish. Discuss your needs with your tour operator. Another factor is the season. The Dry season tends to be most reliable for wildlife photography. However, the lush Wet season, often called the emerald season, is more beautiful and can offer stunning light conditions. Finally, your price and budget are big considerations when choosing any kind of tour.”

African Photo Safaris for the Adventurous Traveler

An African photo safari is a large investment. Piper Mackay thoroughly understands this because she has been roaming Africa’s wilds, photographing remote tribes and wildlife for nearly two decades. From all her years of logistical experience with boots on the ground and a large network of partners, each itinerary is handcrafted with unparalleled photographic opportunities and immeasurable experiences.

TESTIMONIALS

Piper Mackay truly deserves recognition as an outstanding photo safari leader. She is dedicated to doing an outstanding job and I have never seen anyone work as hard as she does to ensure you have a memorable photo safari experience. Would I travel with her again? Absolutely. Would I recommend you go on one of her trips. Yes – without reservation. It is quite obvious she loves what she does and she cares very deeply that you have a memorable experience on her trips. – GREAT MIGRATION SAFARI

The Signature African Safari was my first wildlife photo tour. Piper did not disappoint. As the tour proceeded, she kept exceeding my expectations. Her drivers are excellent. Most importantly, they are also accomplished photographers and they know where to position the vehicles for the best light and the best photographs. Also, early in the tour, I requested a review of my images with Piper and she happily obliged. Her inputs were very helpful and my photos showed a marked improvement as the tour progressed. – SIGNATURE SAFARI AFRICA

If you travel with Piper on one of her photo tours, there will never be a dull moment.  Piper is truly passionate about Africa, about her work, and about ensuring that her clients have a memorable experience.  I am not long back from a trip with Piper to the spectacular Gerewol festival in Chad. As always, Piper had arranged a truly unforgettable trip.  From witnessing the arrival of the nomadic Wodaabe tribe members, to watching the men dance and listening to their hypnotic chant, I will treasure my photographic memories for many years to come – GEREWOL FESTIVAL

Kenya safari

A Kenya safari was one of those things that had been on my bucket list forever, but I wasn’t sure when I’d get around to it. When I thought “African safari”, I pictured fancy lodges with elegant beds draped in mosquito netting that I might be able to afford one day.

Turns out, there’s more than one way to safari. Intrepid’s 8-day Kenya Wildlife Safari was everything I was looking for: it was about a week long, affordable and promised wildlife sightings aplenty. Although if I had a bit more time and money, I would have loved to do the 15-day Masai Heartlands trip , which goes into Tanzania, or the 8-day Kenya Safari Under Canvas trip which is a similar itinerary but the accommodation is nicer (think glamping instead of camping).

What appealed to me about all these trips was that not only do you get to spot animals on safari, you also get to spend a day visiting a Maasai village and experiencing their culture.

On my safari in Kenya, I discovered a love of (amateur) wildlife photography and an even deeper love for Africa .

Here’s what a Kenya safari looks like in photos:

Flooding Inundates Kenya, Killing at Least 32 and Displacing Thousands

Heavy rains also pounded other nations in East Africa, including Tanzania, where at least 155 people were killed, according to the country’s prime minister.

Days of torrential rains have pummeled parts of Kenya, leaving at least 32 dead, 15 injured and more than 40,000 people displaced, according to officials. The flooding has killed nearly 1,000 farm animals and destroyed thousands of acres of crops, with more rain expected across the country in the coming days.

The rains began in March during what is known in the country as the “long rains,” but intensified over the past week, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department .

Heavy rains have also pounded other nations across East Africa. In Tanzania, at least 155 people were killed and 236 others injured from the relentless rain that has swept several parts of the country in recent days, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said on Thursday.

The rains affected some 200,000 people, Mr. Majaliwa added, and caused damage to farms, bridges, roads, schools and places of worship. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority warned that heavy rains and strong winds would continue to pummel several towns and cities, including the port city of Dar es Salaam.

In Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, where some of the country’s heaviest rain has fallen, more than 30,000 people have been displaced, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs . On Tuesday, 18 people there were stranded and later rescued, including seven children, the Kenya Red Cross Society said.

Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi County senator, said on social media that the local government there was “clearly overwhelmed,” and he called on the federal government for help.

“The situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels,” he wrote in a post that included a video of people stranded on rooftops surrounded by floodwaters.

Kithure Kindiki, cabinet secretary for the Interior Ministry, said in a social media post on Thursday that several government agencies were beginning a joint operation to assist the victims, conduct rescues and evacuate those who remain at risk.

The heavy rains on Wednesday forced Kenya Railways to suspend commuter train services. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority also partially closed four major roads in Nairobi and warned of heavy flooding along several major highways in the capital and in the coastal city of Mombasa.

The rains were not expected to subside over the next few days, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department, which had rain in the forecast for parts of the country, including Nairobi, through Monday. The agency also warned of a high likelihood of breakouts of diseases such as malaria and diarrhea in some areas.

The latest downpours come just months after torrential rains and floods killed dozens of people and displaced thousands more nationwide.

Here are photographs of the flooding in Kenya:

Homes in several neighborhoods across the capital were submerged, leading to evacuations.

The torrential rains affected almost half of Kenya’s 47 counties, according to the United Nations.

Flooding inundated entire roadways in Machakos County, about 35 miles southeast of Nairobi.

Flooding in Tanzania and Kenya kills hundreds as heavy rains continue in region

April 26, 2024 / 10:29 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Hundreds of people in Tanzania and Kenya are dead after heavy rain during the region's monsoon season, officials said.

Flooding in Tanzania caused by weeks of heavy rain has killed 155 people and affected more than 200,000 others, the prime minister said Thursday.

That is more than double the number of deaths reported two weeks ago as the amount of rainfall increases, especially in the coastal region and the capital, Dar es Salaam. Flooded schools have been closed and emergency services have rescued people marooned by the flood waters. Roads, bridges, railways and other infrastructure have also been destroyed, officials said.

Tanzania Flooding

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa warned those living in low-lying areas to move to higher ground and urged district officials to ensure that provisions meant for those whose homes were washed away go to those in need of the supplies. He said more than 51,000 households have been affected by the rains.

In Kenya, 70 people have died since the start of monsoon season in March, a government official said Friday. That's double the death toll officials reported on Monday.

In the Mathare slum in the capital, Nairobi, at least four bodies were retrieved from flooded houses on Wednesday. Local media reported that more bodies were retrieved from the Mathare River.

Kenya Flooding

Kenyan President William Ruto chaired a multi-agency flood response meeting on Thursday and directed the National Youth Service to provide land for people in flood-affected areas.

The East African region is highly vulnerable to climate change. Majaliwa told the Tanzanian parliament that the El Niño climate pattern has worsened the ongoing rainy season. The weather pattern has also compounded the flooding in Kenya, officials said. El Niño is expected to last through the spring . The region's dry season typically begins in June.

The AFP contributed reporting.
