Swagman Tours to close
COVID-19 has claimed yet another travel industry victim, with Swagman Tours majority owner Wayne Hamilton confirming that the business has been placed into liquidation.
Long-time Africa expert Hamilton joined Swagman almost a decade ago as its 70% majority shareholder (TD 13 Apr 2012), and significantly expanded the operator’s portfolio to encompass India, Sri Lanka, the Middle East and South America.
More recently the ATAS-accredited and AFTA member company, which has been in operation for 30 years, had pivoted to also offer trips in Australia and New Zealand.
However in a heartfelt message sent to industry partners late on Fri, Hamilton advised that “we fought a good fight but just could not see the light at the end of the tunnel”.
Geelong-based Scott Andersen from Worrells Solvency & Forensic Accountants has been appointed as liquidator.
“Swagman has been a great passion since me joining them as Managing Director and majority shareholder, but sadly comes to an end today,” Hamilton said.
“I have enjoyed many years of both business and personal relationships…today one door closes for us all,” he added.
Hamilton paid tribute to his fellow shareholder and director Soula-Jane Burgess as well as Marketing Manager Treacey Dowd-Hamilton for the “outstanding job they have both done to continue to operate Swagman and try and keep the business going through this pandemic”.
“I know this is a terrible blow, and a tragic end to not only my business, but my whole passion and career, we are truly devastated, we have fought for so long to keep it going.
“This pandemic has wrecked so many lives and businesses, all of which has been completely out of our control,” Hamilton added.

Im very interested in the 14 day migration tour with SWAGMAN TOURS ,which is in the 2013 Africa brochure.Would like to see reviews on this company & perhaps on the tour.I will be travelling by myself & would like to be on a small group tour.
I got a quote from a travel agent using Swagman Tours and while I can't comment on how good they might be, I do remember that it was almost $1,000 more expensive for a 7 day safari when compared to using a local tour operator.

Overland Safaris – the ultimate African experience
Nomad Adventures, represented in Australia by Swagman Tours, operate fantastic value-for-money overland safaris throughout Southern and Eastern Africa, on a camping and accommodated basis. Group sizes are restricted, ensuring you have a fantastic trip without feeling lost in a crowd.
If you dream of having an authentic African adventure, a Nomad small group tour is one of the best ways to achieve it. Everything is organised and planned for you, leaving you free to relax and immerse yourself in your African experience.
Enjoy Africa’s wildlife and scenery on these fun, value-for-money overland safaris in custom-built vehicles throughout Southern and Eastern Africa
Nomad's fleet of custom-made trucks are specially-designed for rugged African conditions. New small group tour vehicles feature luxury-leather reclining swivel-chairs for comfort, personalised air-conditioning and USB charging ports, an on-board toilet and more.
Nomad's overland safaris are very popular across a broad age range, offering an affordable way to cross the most spectacular parts of Africa, making new friends as you go!
Camping or Accommodated – What’s the difference?
Accommodated tours fill the gap between a camping experience and an expensive lodge tour, while camping tours give you a truly African experience. On all tours excluding the Cape Town to Victoria Falls (and sections) both camping and accommodated guests travel together. All meals are prepared at the truck, you have the same guides and the travel times are all the same so that literally is the only decision that you have to make – a bed or a tent.
Tailor-Made Holidays and Group Packages
Nomad's specialised tailor-made specialists can cater to your requirements and assist you to design the dream holiday of a lifetime, whatever your budget. Nomad's experience and expertise throughout Africa means they can create unique group tours for any number of travellers, both private individuals and groups with a range of transport options.

Swagman Tours’ South Africa Farm Tour delivers on all fronts
BEYOND its big game stars, South Africa delivers on many fronts, writes ROBYN JAMES
THE animals of Kruger National Park are usually the first things that come to mind when people think of South Africa. And rightly so.
It is here you can see huge giraffe eating from the tops of trees or majestically crossing the road.
It is here you can see so many different types of deer and antelope, from the small springboks to the large kudu and eland. You may even see a hyena and her cubs, warthogs with their dangerous-looking tusks, hippopotamus that look like big boulders in the river, zebras drinking at waterholes and crocodiles basking in the sun.
All of this was waiting for me outside my hotel room as part of Swagman Tours’ South Africa Farm Tour in June.
At 6am, in open-top four-wheel drives, we entered Kruger. Within half an hour we began to tick off the big five — rhinos, elephants and buffalo to start with, all within metres of us.
Not to mention the amazing birds. In any season you can spot vultures, fish eagles, kingfishers, red-billed hornbills and even a metre-tall stork high up in a tree.
If two days in Kruger is not enough, then at the end of the tour you can visit Chobe National Park in Botswana, and do it all again. But this time, cruise on the water where you can witness the unbelievable sight of elephants swimming across the river and enjoying a mud bath.
Culturally, South Africa is an absolute gem. The food is delicious and hearty, with the opportunity to be more adventurous by tasting warthog, buffalo and crocodile. A traditional African “boma” gives participants the chance to wear an African cloth, beaded headband and dance “African style” before entering the magnificent feast arena. The town of Cradock has four of the most talented women you could ever hope to see — their performance moved many on our tour to tears.
Then there is the impressive Drakensberg Mountains and the stunning beauty of Cape Town. The Victoria and Albert Waterfront is such a treat with its shops and restaurants. A highlight is riding the ferris wheel at twilight to take in the sunset as the city lights appear.
If your interest is history then South Africa offers so much. We had many opportunities to learn about the Zulu nation, Dutch architecture and, of course, Nelson Mandala. I couldn’t help but be moved by a visit to Mandala’s statue in Pretoria, a visit to his jail cell on Robben Island or by simply talking to those most affected by his passion and commitment.
We also visited sheep farms, dairies, pecan nut farms, canola producers and even rode an ostrich at an ostrich farm.
The tour was rounded off by a visit to the magnificent Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. You can even take a breathtaking helicopter ride over the falls, or do as I did and enjoy a walk with the lions on the very last morning before flying home!
