A History of Terror

This award-winning city centre tour explains the Troubles and the peace process with honesty and great insight. The tour visits the locations of major events during the most turbulent period of the conflict.

A History of Terror is the No.1 Belfast Troubles tour. It runs every day starting at 10.30am. Tickets cost £22 per person.

A History of Terror was named #4 Experience in the UK at the TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards 2019 and Highly Commended at the Northern Ireland Tourism Awards in 2019 in the category ‘Authentic Northern Ireland Experience of the Year’. It is graded 5 Stars by Tourism NI .

About the tour

Your tour will start with a short introduction to Irish and British history and the background to the start of the ‘Troubles’ in the late 1960s. We then visit seven locations in the city centre where major events occurred between 1971 and 1976. We use the stories of these events to explain what happened and why, and how it affected nearly every part of our daily lives.

What you will learn

This tour explains how the Troubles began. We tell the stories of the people involved, their place in the conflict and the effect these attacks and incidents had on the city and its people. We do all this from an entirely neutral, civilian perspective. The tour also shows how far the city has come since the ceasefires and Peace Process.

It is suitable for anyone visiting Belfast, regardless of how much or little you already know of our troubled past. The tour is a way for you to get a real feel for our history and make a deeper emotional connection with the city.

The Cathedral Quarter, which you will visit as part of this Belfast Troubles Tour

Crumlin Road Gaol Launches New Troubles Tour

The Troubles Tour at Crumlin Road Gaol

Yesterday, John McGrillen, CEO of Tourism NI was present at Crumlin Road Gaol as they launched a brand new tour based on the history of the Troubles.

The 5 star visitor attraction has created a 4.5 hour experience to give visitors interested in the history of Northern Ireland a detailed insight into happenings during the conflict in Northern Ireland and tell the story from all sides of the community.

The new Troubles Tour will be tour guide led and will take visitor through the heart of Belfast’s most divided communities including the infamous Shankill and Falls roads where visitors will hear first-hand from ex-prisoners from both sides of the conflict. The three mile journey will intersect Belfast most notorious structures, The Peace Walls, which has divided our people for decades. The tour concludes back at Crumlin Road Gaol, once known as Europe’s Alcatraz, a prison fortress in heart of North Belfast! When participants arrive back at the jail they will be able to rest their feet and re-fuel with a much needed bowl of stew and a pint of Guinness at Cuffs Bar & Grill before beginning the last leg of the tour through the prison itself. During the prison tour visitors will learn the role of H.M.P. Belfast during the Troubles and gain an understanding of the roles played by the security forces including the Prison Service, RUC, British Army and RAF.

Phelim Devlin, Director at Crumlin Road Gaol commented “We had noticed a gap in the market for this type of tour and knew it would be of interest to many people, both national and international”.   He continued “The Troubles Tour will cover all aspects of the more recent history here at Crumlin Road Gaol and in the local area including the insights from security services, loyalists and republicans communities. This tour will provide an enhanced visitor experience at our 5 star visitor attraction in addition to contributing and enriching the growing tourism industry here in Belfast.”

Crumlin Road Gaol is one of Belfast’s leading visitor attractions and since opening it has welcomed more than 900,000 visitors. Known as ‘The Crum’ by locals the prison was built in 1845 and closed in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol re-opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre in 2012. Today the attraction offers historical guided tours daily from 10am – 4.30pm which allows the public to explore within the walls and hear the history of the prison and its inmates. The site also boasts a quirky restaurant, Cuffs Bar and Grill, The Crum coffee shop and hosts #LiveAtTheCrum concert nights on a regular basis.

For more details on the new Troubles Tour , and to book, call Crumlin Road Gaol on 028 9074 1500 or visit www.crumlinroadgaol.com . The cost is £35 and the tour is recommended for those age 15 and over.

The Peace Wall is the World’s longest.

Why not add your own message of peace and goodwill during the tour.

Belfast’s mural’s depict life and the views of both Falls Road and Shankill Road residents.

We pride ourselves on being able to give an impartial account of all aspects of our Belfast Political tours.

As well as the Murals and Peace Wall, we cover Crumlin Road Jail and Court House.

Witness to killings, bombings and escape attempts, These Victorian buildings have been a major part of Irish history for over 160 years. Convictions, imprisonment and even executions in evidence within the buildings. Seventeen prisoners were executed in the prison, the last being Robert McGladdery who was hanged in 1961 for the murder of Pearl Gamble.

Belfast Political Tours

Rioter v Saracen hi res 1900.jpg

Understanding Belfast's troubled past, experience living history, and explore the city through the eyes of those who lived, worked, and fought through these turbulent times

Unknown to most, modern-day Belfast remains a divided city. Forty kilometers of a physical wall, up to ten meters high in some locations separate two religious communities living side by side. For more than thirty years, the controversial time known as "The Troubles" has had a powerful impact on the city and its residents. Very few people, if any, were unaffected by the violence that plagued the area and everyone has a story to tell.

This is a unique opportunity to discover the real story you won't get from history books. We invite you to hear first-hand accounts from both sides of this conflicted region, shared by people who were intimately involved in this turbulent period of modern history. Explore up close, the world-famous murals that depict the social, political, and cultural history of the city that earns its reputation as the largest, outdoor art gallery in the world and understand the stories behind them. We offer a selection of tours

You will have the opportunity to sign the Peace Wall, leaving your thoughts alongside those of Bill Clinton and The Dalai Lama. more info

The Belfast Mural Experience tour will take you on a journey in a Belfast style taxi. on this journey of discovery we will stop at the famous murals on the Falls Road (Republican) and the Shankill Road (Loyalist) Through the Murals you will learn about the social, political, and cultural history of Belfast and Northern Ireland- particularly about the period known as 'The Troubles' or 'The Conflict'.

All our drivers are World Host Trained Belfast Ambassadors, local residents with intimate knowledge and someone who has lived through the troubles and has worked the Belfast roads, the Falls, and Shankill. This is an intimate look into a local's life during this period and they will explain how the conflict effected themselves, their families, and the local communities.

All guests will have an opportunity to sign the Peace Wall and leave their thoughts and hopes for lasting peace alongside the Dalai Lama and other famous people who have visited the city. more info

In most conflicts, the involvement of women is largely ignored or not well known, the recent Northern Irish conflict is no different. As violence raged across the city, the backbone of the community was the women of Belfast. This is the true and uncensored story of the women of Ireland in the recent Conflict. A living history.

As many struggled to raise their families in an increasingly violent environment, massive unemployment, social deprivation, and high rates of poverty controlling their daily lives, others consciously chose to directly involve themselves in the conflict. This is an opportunity to hear first-hand accounts of those troubled times from a woman’s perspective. Meet with a local female to explore the streets of  West Belfast, stop at world-famous murals and learn the stories behind them and, immerse yourself in the recent history of the conflict and the aftermath from a female perspective.

  • tomdf2019 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Enjoyed Hugh and the Tour Hugh met us right on time at the appointed meeting location and started by asking how much we (a group of 4 seniors) knew of "The Troubles" and then tailored his presentations to our knowledge, questions and needs. Many interesting stories were shared, including one personal story involving Hugh, that if "totally true" was serious and troubling. But we felt it may have only been "half true" with some embellished parts as he told a serious tale with a bit of a twinkle in his eye and a punchline in the end. Read more Written 13 September 2023
