What's New for 2025?
While the M5 has long been a staple of BMW's lineup in the U.S., 2025 marks the first time the wagon variant has been sold here. Needless to say, we're pumped.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2025 BMW M5 Touring is expected to start around $140,000 and go up to $160,000 depending on the trim and options.
It's too early to tell exactly which configurations the M5 Touring will be offered in, but we do expect to see a six-figure price tag attached to even the least expensive variant. When we find out more about the M5 Touring's price and features, we'll update this story with details.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The M5 Touring will likely be powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 partnered with an electric motor to create up to 738 horsepower. This powertrain can be found in the Label trim of the XM SUV, where its battery pack provides not only extra oomph but up to 29 miles of electric-only driving range as well. The M5 Touring may have a slightly higher range estimate as it's small and lighter. Either way, the new wagon is due to be a performance powerhouse, as this powertrain rocketed the regular XM—with 94 fewer ponies—to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Expect adaptive dampers, rear-wheel steering, staggered wheels-and- tires, and whatever else BMW's engineers can cook up.
As more information becomes available, we'll update this story with more details about:
- 0–60-MPH Times
- Range, Charging, and Battery Life
- Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
- Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
- Infotainment and Connectivity
- Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
- Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

BMW 3 Series Touring review
Drives as well as the saloon. Useful boot. Lots of tech. Still looks good to us
Perhaps not as relaxing to drive as a Mercedes C-Class or Audi A4 Avant
What is it?
To anyone who's done their 3 Series homework, the Touring brings no surprises. The front half is pretty much identical to the recently facelifted saloon, and that's absolutely no bad thing. Thankfully both the 3 and the 5 Series have avoided BMW’s controversial new design direction so far, and the smaller of the two is still a very handsome thing.
We were first shown the facelift in May 2022 , which brought slimmer lights, more aggressive bumpers and BMW’s new Curved Display inside, which pairs a 12.3-inch dial display with a 14.9-inch central infotainment screen and merges them into one widescreen unit.
Hang on, what about the back end?
Ah yes – the important end. Towards the rear, the designers of this seventh-gen G21 took on the same mission as with the saloon – don't just clone'n'shrink a 5 Series – but use a different technique. Where previous 3 Serie Tourings took the window line and simply extended it level, here the lower line of the glass angles upward behind the door. That makes, in effect, the biggest-ever Hofmeister kink . It also gives the design some forward-aiming dynamism.
In the UK we get the choice of Sport and M Sport trims, with the former getting a clean, body-coloured rear end while the latter gets a fair bit of black plastic designed to look like a diffuser.
The Touring is better, right?
The estate remains the same length as the contemporary saloon. Although of course they both grew for this latest generation. The added length is less than the length of a credit card over the previous F30 and F31, but it's more about crash safety than interior space, which hasn't seen much benefit.
The handsome Touring shape encloses 500 litres of boot (or 410 litres if you want a plug-in hybrid), which is about par among the style-led premium wagons, but visibly less than, say, the Volkswagen Passat . Still, the 3 Series has some neat mechanisms to ensure your small but perfectly formed cargo is easily loaded and well restrained.
What engines can I have?
Great question. The only standard diesel currently on offer in the UK is the 320d, which comes with a 48V mild-hybrid system and can be had in either rear- or all-wheel drive. The standard petrols (320i and 330i) are both four-cylinders and rear-wheel drive only, while the plug-in hybrid 330e gets a 12kWh battery and an electric motor paired with its four-cylinder petrol. That can also be had with BMW’s xDrive AWD system should you so desire.
We say those are the standard cars because if you want the ultimate 3 Series (that isn’t a full-fat M3 or M3 Touring ) then you’ll be looking towards the M340d xDrive or the M340i xDrive. More on those over on the driving tab.
Does the 3 Series still sell in the UK?
It really does. You may think everyone wants an X3 these days, but BMW UK says that the 3 Series is still its top seller so far in 2022. It also makes up around 14 per cent of BMW’s worldwide sales.
How much will it cost me?
BMW 3 Series Touring prices start from £41,000 for a base-spec Sport trim 320i. The step up to M Sport trim means a base price of £42,250, while the M340d starts at £59,375 and the M340i at £59,735.
Our choice from the range
What's the verdict?
If you can't find a 3 Series Touring to suit you, you've got some pretty special automotive needs. For most of us, it's all the car we could use or want.
Unless you habitually carry very tall rear-seat passengers, or really bulky cargo, or go off-road, it'll do you proud. It drives as wonderfully as the 3 Series saloon, and the breadth of ability of the M340i xDrive Touring must put the fear of God into all other carmakers.
Have your cake and eat it. The 3 Series Touring will carry a lot of cake.

ENDURANCE TESTING WORLDWIDE.
The prototype is carefully disguised, but it cannot conceal its character as high-performance car. The future generation of the BMW M5 Touring has entered the practical phase of its series development process. The new high-performance model from BMW M is now completing its test drives on public roads, BMW Group proving grounds and racetracks around the world.
NEW DRIVE, M TYPICAL PERFORMANCE.
The M5 Touring will feature a completely newly developed partially electrified drive system. Its M typical performance characteristics as well as the precisely tuned chassis technology refined with innovative systems facilitate driving dynamics and agility at a level unique in this vehicle class. Thus, BMW M GmbH is steadily progressing on its path to electrification.
We are now also installing a hybrid drive system with typical M performance in other high-performance cars.
HISTORY OF THE BMW M5 TOURING.
For almost 40 years now, the BMW M5 has been the benchmark for driving dynamics, agility and precision in the high-performance sedan and touring segment. Evolutionary progress, development know-how from racing and pioneering innovations in the areas of drive, suspension, aerodynamics and lightweight construction have shaped the history of the BMW M5. Engines with six, eight and ten cylinders, M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics, the compound brake system with M Carbon ceramic brakes and M xDrive four-wheel drive are just some of the technological milestones with which this model has repeatedly redefined top performance in a sedan that is unconditionally suitable for everyday use. The third generation of the BMW M5 Touring takes up on this – with fascinating innovations for an even more intense performance experience.
The forefather of all BMW M Touring models.
The first BMW M5 Touring was launched back in 1992 on the basis of the second-generation BMW M5 Sedan (E34) and has since stood for a combination of high performance and everyday practicality on four wheels. With 340 hp, six cylinders and a superb propensity for long-distance travel.
Motorsport and transport in perfect harmony.
Dynamic sportscar, comfortable touring sedan, roomy cargo artist: In 2007, BMW M GmbH also added a Touring variant to the fourth-generation BMW M5. A portrait of one of the fastest series estates of its time.
The models illustrated include optional equipment. Due to regular software updates, screen designs in the communication may differ from the actual screen design in your car. Official data on power consumption and electric range were determined in accordance with the mandatory measurement procedure and comply with Regulation (EU) 715/2007 valid at the time of type approval. In case of a range, figures in the NEDC take into account differences in the selected wheel and tire size; figures in the WLTP take into account any optional equipment. WLTP values are used for assessing taxes and other vehicle-related charges that are (also) based on CO2 emissions, as well as for the purposes of vehicle-specific subsidies, if applicable. Where applicable, the NEDC values listed were calculated based on the new WLTP measurement procedure and then converted back to the NEDC measurement procedure for comparability reasons. For newly type-tested vehicles since 01.01.2021, the official data no longer exist according to NEDC, but only according to WLTP. For more information on the WLTP and NEDC measurement procedures, see https://www.bmw.com/wltp . For further information about the official fuel consumption and the specific CO2 emission of new passenger cars can be taken out of the "handbook of fuel consumption, the CO2 emission and power consumption of new passenger cars", which is available at all selling points and at https://www.dat.de/co2/ . All vehicles, equipment, combination possibilities and varieties shown here are examples and can differ in your country. In no way do they constitute a binding offer by the BMW M GmbH. BMW M3 CS Touring Puts The Waaaah Into Wagon
Power boost, suspension upgrades and lightweight components from M3 CS sedan will soon be available in the square-back Touring
by Chris Chilton
- M3 CS Touring is a wagon version of last year’s CS sedan
- S58 inline six tuned to 543 hp, drives all four wheels through a mandatory auto
- Aero upgrades and suspension tweaks increase cornering speeds
BMW hadn’t sold a Touring version of a real M car for years until the current M3 appeared in 2022. But now it’s making up for lost time and is getting ready to reveal three new hot wagons. One is the M5, another is the mildly facelifted M3 Touring, and the third is the car you see here, the CS Touring.
As its name suggests, the wickedest 3-Series wagon yet is a shooting brake version of the M3 CS sedan BMW launched last year, and will feature most of the same aesthetic and functional mods to make it sharper to drive than the base Touring, without compromising on cargo capacity.
Related: New BMW M5 Touring Confirmed For USA
Unlike the M4 CSL coupe, which comes only in rear-wheel drive, the CS sedan is restricted to xDrive all-wheel drive and automatic transmission, the same configuration already used by the regular M3 Touring. But what the CS does inherit from the CSL is the same S58 3.0-liter bi-turbo six that’s tuned to deliver 543 hp (550 PS).
That gives it a healthy 40 hp (40 PS) advantage over the current M3 Touring, but the gap will narrow soon when that ordinary M3 Touring gets the same bump from 503 hp (510 PS) to 523 hp (530 PS) that the M4 has just been given. BMW quotes a 3.2-second zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) time for the CS sedan and the wagon is unlikely to be more than a tenth slower.
The last time we spied a CS Touring prototype it still had an ordinary M3 grille, but this latest test car has the CS-specific grille bars that, together with the aggressive front splitter, give the front end an even angrier look. Other upgrades will include changes to the suspension geometry and a cast aluminum strut brace. But BMW probably won’t offer a carbon roof on the wagon.
Back in September, we reported on a rumor that fewer than 2,000 CS Tourings will be produced and that even building such a low number of cars could be a struggle due to production capacity constraints. Sadly, no matter how many BMW does build, it won’t be offering any of them in North America, where the plain M3 Touring is also a no-show.
It’s not all bad news, though. BMW has confirmed that the upcoming M5 Touring will be available in the U.S.

What Year BMW M3 Has The S58 Engine & How Much Horsepower Does It Produce?
Every iteration of the iconic BMW M3 came with new and improved engines , each providing the exhilarating performance and mechanical soundtrack enthusiasts want from a German sport-luxury car. Noteworthy is the E9x generation M3 produced from 2008 to 2014. The E90/E92/E93 M3 is unique for being the only variant in its lineage to have the BMW S65 4.0-liter V8 engine.
Despite starting its life with an S14 inline four-cylinder engine in the first-gen E30 M3 , the inline-six engine in the E36 and E46 M3 left fans yearning for more. BMW obliged with the fifth-gen F80 M3 sold from 2014 to 2018. It was the first BMW M3 to come exclusively in a four-door sedan body style and the first to get a turbocharged S55 inline-six engine and it came with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission. But BMW customers would have to wait a few more years before the S58 would arrive.
BMW M3 G80 debuted the twin-turbo S58 inline-six
When BMW introduced the all-new M3 G80 in 2021, it came with the S58 3.0-liter inline-six with two mono-scroll turbochargers, double Vanos camshaft timing, and Valvetronic variable valve timing. The S58 engine debuted in 2019 for the F97/F98 BMW X3 M and X4 M before making it to the G80/G81 M3 and M4 two years later.
The S58 in standard guise makes 473 horsepower and 405 lb-ft of torque, the latter available from 2,650 to 6,130 rpm. Meanwhile, Competition variants like the M3 Competition xDrive have 510 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque at 2,750 to 5,500 rpm. Notably, the BMW M3 G80 is the first in its lineage to come with an optional all-wheel drivetrain.
The BMW S58 is a technical masterpiece with a lightweight forged crankshaft, a 3D-printed cylinder head core, high-precision fuel injection, and a dual chamber oil sump that ensures reliable lubrication in extreme driving environments. The BMW M3 G80 is still in production as of 2024. Another M car that uses the S58 engine is the second-gen BMW M2 with a 453-horsepower version of the twin-turbo inline-six.

BMW unveils 2025 i4 with a reimagined gloss black front end and sportier digitized interior
BMW USA has shared initial details of its 2025 model year i4 EV ahead of the all-electric sedan’s official launch this summer. Updates include a redesigned front fascia (all hail the kidney!), new exterior colors, and a digitized interior with sportier textiles.
The BMW i4 debuted as a 2022 model-year sedan, which we at Electrek have had the chance to test out multiple times (with mostly nice things to say about it). It’s not the flashiest or most powerful of the BMW “i” line of BEVs and has been updated with lower specs to make it one of the German automaker’s most affordable models.
In fact, the version of the i4 before today’s incoming 2025 model is BMW’s most affordable EV lease option . Last summer, we saw BMW introduce a new variant of the 2024 i4 called xDrive40, positioned between the dual-motor i4 M50 and the single-motor i4 eDrive40.
Today, BMW USA has begun teasing its 2025 i4 models, including a redesigned M50 xDrive.
BMW shares new 2025 i4 details, just no pricing yet
Per BMW USA, the 2025 model year versions of the i4 BEVs have received cosmetic updates inside and out. The German automaker states the sedan’s slim headlights and vertical kidney grille have been refreshed. The former sees adaptive single LED modules that generate a “Welcome Light” animation when the drive gets within ten feet.
The latter gains a new matte chrome finish and its upper section has been fully enclosed to further showcase its high-gloss black finish (seen above). The M Sport package of the 2025 BMW i4 now also includes a lower diffuser in the rear bumper, finished in high-gloss black to match its air intakes on the front fascia. Those elements were Cerium Grey in previous i4 models .
New exterior colors have been added as configurable options, including Cape York Green metallic and Vegas Red metallic. Future 2025 BMW i4 customers will also be able to select from several new alloy wheel options, including 19-inch M Aero bi-color wheels available in the M Sport package.
Inside the 2025 i4, BMW said it focused on providing digitalization and “a sharper sporting profile.” A new QuickSelect feature in iDrive reduces the number of physical buttons in the cockpit, and additional features can be activated via touch on the sedan’s center display, including climate control and seat/steering wheel heating. Here are some more deets, per the release:
The new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe are fitted as standard with sport seats in perforated Sensatec. Vernasca leather trim with decorative quilting is available in five colors, including the new bi-color Black with Red Highlight. 2025 BMW i4s and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupes come standard with a two-spoke steering wheel with polygonal rim and illuminated multifunction buttons. Adding the M Sport Package now brings an M leather steering wheel in a three-spoke design with a flat-bottomed rim and a black center stripe marking the 12 o’clock position. The three-spoke M leather steering wheel standard on the i4 M50 xDrive and M440i models additionally features M tricolor stitching and a red stripe at top dead center.
The new EVs will arrive powered by BMW Operating System 8.5, which will enable updated cloud-based BMW Maps navigation and more holistic access to the My BMW App. Two elements BMW’s press release lacks are any mention of upgrades to the 2025 i4’s performance and what its variants will cost when they launch.
The automaker says pricing will be announced soon, ahead of the official launch of the 2025 i4 in July 2024. The BEVs continue to be built near BMW’s headquarters in Munich, Germany. Here’s a look at the European version of the i4 while we await more details.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – April 24, 2024… Already innovators in the premium midsize class in terms of aesthetic appeal, driving pleasure, electrification, and digitalization, the new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe are building further on their unique status in the marketplace with updates in all these areas.
New exterior paint finishes and light-alloy wheels, new designs for the headlights, and rear lights available with laser-lit accents accentuate the bold visual impact of both models.
Inside, the BMW Curved Display provides the stage for the latest evolution of BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, based on BMW Operating System 8.5. The display and control/operation system can be specified with an Augmented View display for the BMW Maps navigation system. And new steering wheel designs, interior trim elements, and upholsteries bring modern touches to the premium ambience of the interior.
The new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe will be built at BMW’s home plant in Munich, whose transformation into a production facility geared exclusively to all-electric models is being fueled by substantial investment. The worldwide market launch of the new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe will get underway in July 2024.
New design for the BMW kidney grille, headlights, and rear lights.
Slim headlights and a vertically arranged BMW kidney grille dropping deeply towards the road define the front-end styling of the BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. A refreshed design brings additional visual impact to these signature brand features. The surround of the BMW kidney grille is now finished in matt chrome, both as standard and in conjunction with the optional M Sport package. Due to the lower cooling requirement of the electric drive system, the BMW kidney grille of the new BMW i4 has a fully enclosed upper section, below which is a Black high-gloss surface topped by a matte-silver honeycomb pattern. The air intakes on the combustion-engined versions of the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe have a mesh structure whose surfaces are now finished in matte Quartz Silver.
As well as a front apron with large side air intakes, the M Sport package for the BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe also includes a diffuser element in the lower section of the rear bumper, now finished in Black high-gloss. The exhaust tailpipes integrated into the rear apron on the left and right of the combustion-engined models have grown from 3.5 inches to 4 inches in diameter. Like the BMW kidney grille surround, if the optional M high-gloss Shadowline with extended elements is specified, they are finished in Black high-gloss.
The slim headlights have been visually and functionally upgraded. Low and high beam are generated from a single LED module, and pair of vertical and subtly arrow-shaped LED units house the side marker lights, daytime running lights, and turn signal functions. The new headlights generate a Welcome Light animation once the driver and key come within 10 feet of the vehicle.
Adaptive Full LED Headlights are standard on i4 M50 xDrive and M440i models and optional on all other models as part of the Shadowline Package. Vehicles equipped as such are also fitted with new Laserlight taillights. This innovative lighting effect employs a technology first seen on the BMW M4 CSL, a high-performance special edition model. Here, laser diodes illuminate a fiber optic bundle, giving the rear units an intricate light graphic.
New exterior paint finishes and aerodynamic wheels.
The selection of exterior paint finishes for the BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe now includes Cape York Green metallic and Vegas Red metallic. A wide variety of BMW Individual paint finishes are also offered.
The range of optional alloy wheel designs also features attractive new additions. 19-inch M Aero bi-color wheels can be ordered on cars specified with the optional M Sport Package. Also new are 20-inch BMW Individual Aero bi-color wheels in double-spoke design, available on M440i models and 430i models equipped with the M Sport Package.
New interior accents enhance a progressive sporting appeal.
The changes to the interior of the new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe are focused on digitalization and achieving a sharper sporting profile. The upgraded BMW iDrive with QuickSelect further reduces in the number of buttons and controls in the cockpit. The functions of the automatic climate control system and seat and steering wheel heating can now be operated by touch via the BMW Curved Display or by voice command through the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. New adjustment controls for the air vents allow the airflow direction to be adjusted using rotating and tilting movements.
The new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe are fitted as standard with sport seats in perforated Sensatec. Vernasca leather trim with decorative quilting is available in five colors including the new bi-color Black with Red Highlight.
High-quality materials, new interior trim elements.
New interior trim elements include M Fine Brushed Aluminum, new Fineline Light open-pored and Grey Blue Ash open-pored fine wood trim variants.
The Sensatec upholstery covering the instrument panel now has a smoother, more refined surface that extends to the upper portion of all four door panels. And customers can now specfiy a Galvanic finish for the gear selector, BMW iDrive Controller, and Start/Stop button on the center console.
Combustion engines with 48V mild hybrid technology. Powerful and efficient.
The new B58B30M2 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engines in the 2025 M440i Gran Coupe models feature a new 48V mild hybrid (MHEV) technology for sharper power deliver and greater efficiency. The auxilliary electric drive of the 48V starter generator can provide 11 hp of boost to the 375 hp TwinPower Turbo engine, resulting in a total system output of 386 hp @ 5,200-6,250 rpm and 398 lb-ft of torque @ 1,900-4,800 rpm.
The engine is paired with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission to propel the BMW M440i Gran Coupe from 0-60 mph in an estimated 4.7 seconds, or an estimated 4.3 seconds when fitted with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. The engine’s surge of power is accompanied by an exhilarating soundtrack from the M Sport exhaust system. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. The B48B20O2 2-liter inline 4-cylinder engine in the 2025 430i Gran Coupe models also benefits from 48V mild hybrid technology, as well as incorporation of the Miller cycle combustion process, a redesign of the intake ports and combustion chambers, and innovations in the areas of camshaft control, injection, ignition system, and exhaust gas routing. The TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder engine produces 255 hp @ 4,700-6,500 rpm, and 295 lb-ft of torque @ 1,600-4,500 rpm.
Unique design elements for the M Performance models.
The BMW i4 M50 xDrive and BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupe underline their sporty character with M-specific design features. Both models now feature a BMW kidney grille with a Black high-gloss surround and horizontally arranged bars adorned by a BMW M logo. And the front apron elements previously finished in Cerium Grey now come in Black high-gloss.
The distinctive trapezoidal tailpipe trim at the rear end of the new BMW M440i Gran Coupe models also sports a Black high-gloss finish. The M Carbon exterior package available as an option includes side air intake trim at the front end, M‑specific exterior mirror caps, a diffuser insert in the rear apron, and a subtle rear spoiler all made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP).
Display and control/operation system, connectivity.
The latest generation of the BMW iDrive display and control/operation system with QuickSelect based on BMW Operating System 8.5 opens up a new way of intuitively controlling vehicle functions and accessing digital services in the BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. With the digital BMW Curved Display screen grouping and the expanded capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the driver-centric cockpit has been optimized for touch control and natural language.
The climate control functions are also operated digitally in the new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, enabling a further reduction in the number of physical buttons and controls. The control/operation system additionally comprises multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, the BMW iDrive Controller and, as an option, the BMW Head-Up Display.
BMW iDrive with QuickSelect: simplified and even more intuitive.
The system’s QuickSelect feature paves the way for an improved menu structure that takes cues from consumer electronics devices. It allows the driver to navigate to functions directly from the newly arranged home screen without having to enter submenus. The new, flat menu structure makes it much easier to switch between different functions and helps the driver to focus their attention on what’s happening on the road.
The new home screen continuously displays the navigation system’s map view. On the same level, there is a vertical bar on the driver’s side of the display containing widgets that can be individually selected and arranged. The BMW i4 also includes a widget for the charging functions. Some of the widgets can also be swiped horizontally to show additional content. The related functions can then be called up directly with QuickSelect. And once the relevant settings have been chosen, a quick tap on the home icon at the lower edge of the control display is all it takes to return to the home screen. Icons for direct access to the climate control menu, Apps menu, and Apple CarPlay ® and Android Auto™ can also now be found next to the home icon.
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with additional languages and new graphics.
Voice control using the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is set to become even more interactive and intuitive in the new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. There is now a choice of two different looks for the graphics visualising the digital companion on the control display, with additional graphics also appearing here in response to selected voice commands. For instance, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant acknowledges the request to look for a filling station nearby by showing the image of a fuel pump, enriching the dialogue between driver and vehicle.
BMW Maps navigation system with new charging-optimised route guidance and Augmented View.
The cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system forms part of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus. Underpinned by BMW Operating System 8.5, the system now makes it even easier to input destinations and can offer additional information while driving. Further enhancements include better usability of filters, a flatter menu structure with touch buttons shown directly on the map view and proactive route recommendations.
The latest version of BMW Maps also gives BMW i4 drivers access – both from the vehicle and via the My BMW App – to improved functions that enable charging-optimized route planning over long journeys. The charging stops are planned so that the selected destination is reached as quickly as possible. The driver’s preferred minimum charge level when arriving at mid-journey stops and the final destination can be adjusted in increments of five percent and incorporated into the route planning. The system can also give preference to charging stations operated by selected providers and exclude others from the route planning at the driver’s request. The system will then propose the latter only if there seems to be no alternative for an efficient route without any large detours.
Additional information is provided for the selected charging stations, such as supported connector types and payment options, as well as the availability of sanitary, catering or shopping facilities in the vicinity. The expected duration of the planned charging stop and the resulting electricity costs can also be shown in advance. The closer the vehicle gets to a scheduled mid-journey stop, the more frequently the availability of the charging point is checked so that an alternative route can be recommended in good time if necessary. Regardless of the charging-optimized route given, a constant stream of alternative charging options are also displayed, e.g. for spontaneous mid-journey breaks.
Specifying the optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional adds not only the full-color BMW Head-Up Display, but also the Augmented View function. This offers contextual, real-time information to complement the navigation system’s map display by showing a live video stream of the driver’s view on the control display or instrument cluster and augmenting it with information that is currently relevant. At confusing junctions, for instance, an animated directional arrow is integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best turn-off for the planned route.
Personalization and remote access with BMW ID and My BMW App.
BMW Operating System 8.5 also makes it even easier to personalise the user experience in the BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. Signing in to the vehicle by scanning a QR code with a smartphone is all it takes to import the customer’s personal profile, load synchronizable settings and automatically link the key detected in the vehicle with the BMW ID.
The vehicle is also automatically added to the My BMW App. Available free of charge from the app stores for both iOS and Android, the My BMW App acts as a universal digital interface that provides information on the vehicle’s condition, charging status or remaining range at any time. Depending on the car’s specification, it also gives the user access to various remote functions. For example, the vehicle can be located remotely via the My BMW App and the doors locked and unlocked. The Remote 3D View and Remote Inside View functions included with the optional Parking Assistant Plus give drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle’s immediate vicinity on their smartphone.
Besides this, the My BMW App can also be used to send destination addresses from the user’s smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation system for route planning and to initiate, purchase or extend ConnectedDrive Upgrades. It is also possible to control the charging process and pre-conditioning for the BMW i4 from the My BMW App. The My Trips feature including Efficiency Trainer and monthly review provides the user with data and evaluations for distances travelled, consumption and average speed, as well as offering helpful tips for driving more efficiently.
Optimum connectivity with Personal eSIM and 5G standard.
Customers of the new BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe can activate the Personal eSIM as standard – in addition to the vehicle’s built-in mobile SIM. The Personal eSIM uses the 5G mobile communications standard and allows the customer to use the communications and connectivity features covered by their mobile contract from their car, even when they don’t have their smartphone with them.
All phone functions can be operated with the BMW iDrive system or the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. A connection to the vehicle’s exterior antenna is used for making phone calls and streaming data via the Personal eSIM.
Plug & Charge Multi Contract: contactless authentication with access to multiple contracts.
The Plug & Charge Multi Contract function can also be used with the new BMW i4. Plug & Charge Multi Contract makes charging at compatible public charging stations even easier, as digital authentication via app or charging card is no longer required to access them. Instead, the vehicle authenticates itself independently through a technical interface.
Customers can digitally store up to five individual Plug & Charge-enabled charging contracts from different suppliers in the vehicle. The authentication required for charging and billing takes place automatically at compatible charging points.

Future Cars Worth Waiting For: 2024–2028
Posted: April 26, 2024 | Last updated: April 26, 2024
Even in the age of next-day delivery, self-checkout, and gigabit internet, some things can't be rushed. The cars, trucks, and SUVs seen here won't reach dealer lots for anywhere from a few months to a few years. Some of them are about to roll down the assembly line. Others haven't emerged from the design studio yet. We're telling you about them now, though, because these are the vehicles that will matter, regardless of how many boring crossovers automakers puke out. These are worth the wait.
More on Future Cars
2025 BMW M5
The next-generation BMW M5 sedan will take the stage for the 2025 model year with an upgraded powertrain that promises lots more power than before. For the first time, the M5 will be offered as a plug-in hybrid with an estimated 738 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive. There’s even a rumor that it will be offered in station-wagon form in North America. Unfortunately, we’re still too far from the expected July 2024 launch date for a list of complete specs, but we’re excited at the prospect of a wagon version (Touring in BMW-speak) of the M5 coming to our shores.
2026 BMW 3-Series
As previewed by the Vision Neue Klasse concept car pictured here, the next version of BMW's venerable 3-series sports sedan will adopt classic proportions for its latest generation. It will use an entirely new EV platform with an 800-volt architecture, but it remains to be seen if BMW will continue on with hybrid and ICE powertrains or transition its bread-and-butter model to a fully electric lineup. We expect to see it arrive for the 2026 model year.
2024 Cadillac Celestiq
Cadillac's new EV lineup will start with the 2023 Lyriq SUV and will continue with a flagship sedan called the Celestiq, set to arrive soon. Its dramatic design was revealed in 2022 , and we know that it will have an all-wheel-drive electric drivetrain and boast a driving range of more than 300 miles. It's likely to command a price around $300,000 and have the technology and luxury to match.
2025 Cadillac Escalade IQ
Cadillac is seeking to capitalize on the Escalade name with the new battery-powered Escalade IQ. This 750-hp electric SUV will arrive during the summer of 2024. A 200.0-kWh battery pack sandwiched under its floorboards should be good for up to 450 miles of driving between charges. The interior dedicates much of its surface area to screens, but beyond the plethora of pixels is a luxurious wrapping of leather, polished-aluminum accents, and ambient lighting. To appease the chauffeured, Cadillac will offer an optional Executive Second-Row Seating package. Pricing will be steep, with most models in six-figure territory.
2025 Dodge Charger EV
Previewed by a concept car last year, Dodge's upcoming electric muscle car is taking shape with an interesting combination of retro styling, futuristic technology, and good old fashioned swagger. Power will range from 455 horsepower for the 340 model, with the mid-level 440 packing 590 hp and the top Banshee model promising to beat the gas-powered Hellcat in every imaginable performance metric.
2026 Honda Prelude
The storied Prelude name is coming back to Honda's lineup, and we're hoping that the revived sports coupe will be as exciting as its predecessors. Shown in concept form at the 2023 Tokyo auto show , the Prelude appears to be based on the Civic and supposedly features a hybrid drivetrain. We're hoping that means well over 200 horsepower, although it remains to be seen if a manual transmission will be part of the equation. Honda says it won't be a hard-core performance car like the Civic Type R, but that doesn't mean it won't be fun to drive.
2024 Jeep Recon
A Jeep EV is coming. Details are still scarce, but we do know that the four-wheel-drive Jeep Recon EV will be an electric SUV with an available power-folding roof and easily removable doors. Details such as price, driving range, battery size, and power output haven’t been revealed yet. In photos, however, we see features such as an illuminated seven-slot grille, a tailgate-mounted spare tire, and seating for up to five. Jeep does claim that the Recon will come with locking differentials and underbody protection. Initial production is set for sometime in 2024.
2025 Lexus Electrified Sport
Lexus showed a range of electric concepts recently, but by far the most enticing is this EV supercar that appears to be close to reality. Lexus has described it as a spiritual successor to the LFA and made some heady performance claims: a 60 mph sprint in the low 2.0-second range and a range of over 430 miles thanks to solid-state batteries. There's even talk of a simulated manual transmission. We'll see how much of that comes to fruition when we hear more about this sporty Lexus EV within the next few years.
2025 Lucid Gravity
After launching its 10Best-winning Air sedan , the EV upstart Lucid Motors is developing an SUV called the Gravity. Slated to go on sale in late 2024, the Gravity shares most of its mechanical bits and interior design with the Air, so we’re looking at big horsepower, a large battery pack, and a posh cabin loaded with modern amenities. The Gravity has a large, curved display for gauges and infotainment as well as a secondary touchscreen mounted central on the dashboard for other functions. The Gravity will be offered as a two-row SUV, but a third row will be optional.
2025 Mazda CX-70
Mazda is expanding its SUV lineup to include a new two-row mid-size crossover called the CX-70. It rides on the same new architecture that’s underneath the three-row CX-90 , and the cabin will be more spacious than the smaller CX-5 and CX-50 SUVs. We expect to see both a turbocharged inline-six gasoline engine with up to 340 horsepower and a plug-in hybrid. While Mazda hasn’t officially revealed the CX-70, we expect it to look similar to the Europe-market CX-60 (pictured) but with a wider body. Mazda has upmarket aspirations, and we expect the new CX-70 will have a nicer cabin than many similarly priced rivals. Expect to see it hit dealers in 2024.
2025 Mercedes-Benz EQG
Over several decades, the Mercedes-Benz G-class built a reputation as an all-conquering off-roader before becoming a six-figure status symbol for celebrities. For its next act, it’ll become an electric vehicle called the EQG. If the futuristic-looking concept version pictured here is any indication, it’ll retain the classic boxy styling of the G-wagen that we know and love, and Mercedes says the EQG will also continue to be an extremely capable off-roader. The EQG is expected to be powered by four electric motors (one for each wheel) that will be individually controllable, which should improve performance both on- and off-road. The EQG will most likely get a fully independent suspension. We expect it to arrive for the 2025 model year. The price will likely go well beyond $200,000 with options.
2026 Polestar 6
Polestar's first vehicle, the dashing 1 hybrid coupe , has been followed by a succession of more reasonable cars, but the Swedish automaker will move back upmarket in 2026 with the Polestar 6 convertible. Based on the O2 concept, the 6 will pair crisp styling with an 884-hp, 663-pound-foot all-wheel-drive powertrain, good enough for a 3.2-second sprint to 60 mph and a 155-mph top speed. Its bonded aluminum chassis and 800-volt architecture will be shared with the upcoming Polestar 5 sedan , and pricing should start over $100,000 for the eye-catching halo car.
2024 Ram Rampage
The full-size Ram 1500 has long been one of our favorite pickups, and soon Ram will offer the Rampage, a Honey, I Shrunk the Truck version of its bestseller. While it’s currently confirmed only for markets outside the U.S., the Rampage might become available to us soon. The Rampage doesn’t skimp on handy features, such as a power tailgate. Like other compact pickups, the Rampage will be powered by a turbo four-cylinder powertrain, possibly the 2.0-liter setup found in the Dodge Hornet GT SUV . More details are expected sometime in 2024.
2025 Toyota MR2
Toyota is on a bit of a sports-car kick of late, having remained committed to the 86, a rear-drive two-door co-developed with Subaru, and having introduced a new Supra (co-developed with BMW). Next, Toyota is looking at resurrecting the midship runabout two-seater known as the MR2. Unlike previous iterations of this mid-engined sports car, the new MR2 likely will be electrified. Toyota even showed a concept called the FT-Se that got us even more excited about the prospects of this new model.
What We Know So Far
2025 Volkswagen ID.Buzz
The highly anticipated revival of Volkswagen's iconic Microbus is really happening. VW has confirmed that it will be sold in the U.S. starting in 2024 as a 2025 model . An all-electric van, the Buzz will be part of the company's expanding ID EV lineup. The version sold here will be a long-wheelbase passenger configuration, while Europe will get commercial versions as well. It will offer 282 horsepower in rear-wheel-drive base form and around 330 horsepower in a more expensive all-wheel-drive configuration.
