Tawang, an ancient hamlet studded on the craggy peaks of Himalayas in Arunachal Pradesh, is the last bastion of Tibetan Buddhist monastic community. The indigenous Monpa tribesmen harps on the olden historic way of life. A well chalked out road-trip to Tawang from the plains of Guwahati is a delight for a mountain lover. In this Tawang travel blog, I recount my days of exploring the dramatic landscape of the high Himalayas. The week long road trip to Tawang touched the heart of Bhalukpong, Dirang, Bomdila, Bum La on the way , where mountain life thrives in its glorious existence.

Why we decided to visit Tawang?

A place rich with all the strange beauty of your nighttime dreams. Heinrich Harrer, Seven Years in Tibet

On the second day in Tawang, I sat breathless under a starlit night in the Taktsang hotel courtyard. My head was bursting out with a teeming pain. I wanted to throw up, but my empty stomach held on to the last bout of life in body. Earlier that day, we returned from the Bum La Pass, a high altitude terrain, home to countless glacial lakes and escape routes from the oppressive Chinese regime that overtook Tibet’s heartland and capital city, Lhasa. 

Raghunath, the janitor and a young Assamese boy took pity on me, and sat next with a glass of potable lukewarm water. Our previous conversations were all about me going gaga over the Assamese Thali I tasted on the way up the mountains. The jovial fellow shared with me the secret recipe of his grandma’s duck curry. Hotels and guesthouses in Tawang are mostly run by Assamese fellows. In those roughly ten days of exploring Tawang, we came by locals only a handful of times. 

I recall wondering how my friend Samarpita, whose pictures of prancing around the Madhuri lake with two young kids had originally inspired me to embark on this journey. How she managed to remain unscathed from the Mountain sickness which was pushing me to the verge of giving up? From her posts, I figured she was spending a glorious summer in Darjeeling. Suddenly the roads seemed to be more obscure, the Tibetan Buddhist gomphas seemed to be unforeseen, the road more lethal and those stretching off to faraway lands.

Upon enquiring, I found out she was treading on the route through which Dalai lama made it back to India when the Chinese PLA made advances to gulp down Tibet. The road is thrilling, studded with steep crags and wooded hillsides. The call to traverse this unknown land was inevitable!

Did I regret making this trip, down with a sudden attack of mild mountain sickness? Nay Nay! In all these years of romancing the Himalayan terrains in Himachal, Kashmir, Darjeeling, Ladakh and Arunachal, I would redo Tawang in a heartbeat!  But I will be honest with you. AMS hurts and it hurts very bad. My body, made of all the ingredients found in abundance in the delta of Gangetic plainland, was in shock and memorizes the agony without fail.

Stressing on the craggy mountain’s breathtaking beauty is a rather cliché way to describe Tawang, land of high mountain passes and glacial lakes. In absolute truthfulness, visiting Tawang is challenging, requires procuring complex permit procedures even as an Indian national, dangerous to a certain extent considering the steep ascent and thin air and uncertain too. Think snow fall. Think landslide. And the road to Tawang is cut off midway! You will have no other option but to make way back to one of the other ten tourist routes in Arunachal Pradesh. 

I did not come to Tawang in the muse of glossy magazine covers and picture perfect postcards. I came here to experience the glimpses of Tibet used to be, as portrayed in the movie Seven years in Tibet, starring Brad Pitt. And I was not disappointed. If you have watched the film, you will know what solemn splendor the Himalayas had showed them at every bend of the road.

Tracing Back History of Tawang

Thanks to centuries of British rule, the independent nations of Indian subcontinent inherited a McMohan borderline where dispute is the regular order of the day. Tawang, straddling the border of Tibet (now part of the Chinese map), has suffered for decades. Bloodshed was, bloodshed is an integral part of the old town, housed at an extraordinary elevation of 10,000 ft on the Himalayas of West Kameng.

The aftermath of Doklam stand-off rendered Tawang rapid change of infrastructure. Long stretched tunnel eliminating the winter obstacle of snow clad Sela pass is being worked on as I type this. BRO (border road organisation) is relentless in curving out an alternate path connecting the barren landscape of the upper Himalayas. A fantastic railroad connecting Bhalukpong to Tawang is being planned. The very thought of taking that train ride is exhilarating, even though a larger part of the road will be in a dark tunnel to maintain ecological balance of the fragile mountains. 

In this slew of proposed and inevitable face-lifting changes, I wonder how Tawang will retain her original identity. 

Known as North East Frontier Agency (NEFA) in olden days, Arunachal Pradesh, the state of India’s far east has historically played home to a number of tribes with distinct lifestyle practices. 

In Tawang, you will meet the nomadic Monpa tribesmen. Wearing a sheepskin Chuba and elaborate headdress made of yak hair, the Monpas are immaculate in the art of Thangka painting and weaving. For centuries, they have been following Tibetan Buddhism, combined with rituals stemming from the scriptures of Bon, the ethnic religion of the region. You will find Monpas residing in Tibet Autonomous Region and Bhutan as well.

The sixed Dalai Lama was born to a Monpa family. Needless to say, influence of the Tawang monastery in local life is paramount.

Historically, Tawang has shared strong cultural ties with Tibet. The border was porous with people crossing through the high mountain passes. We are talking about the 1950s, when life was slow paced. Tawang remains buried under a deep snow bed for the prolonged winter months. Geo-political disputes were less uglier than what they seem to be now! 

Tibet had claimed Tawang as their own land, resulting in occasional skirmishes until the Chinese PLA aggressively marched forward for Tibet. The ensuing Sino-China war lasted for a while, costing thousands of lives to armed forces on both sides. They withdrew their claim for the time being from Arunachal Pradesh, however you will find remnants of the war on the plains of Tezpur, Assam. We are talking about India in 1960s, a newly formed independent nation with limited resources. 

With the Tibetan capital Lhasa under attach, the 14th Dalai Lama took the perilous night journey traversing the arduous peaks of Himalaya with a caravan of Tibetan men on foot. Upon reaching Bomdila, he sought asylum and was grated so by Indian PM Nehru. In his autobiography, Dalai Lama writes, “India was our only hope!” 

The Red Chinese clashed virulently afterwards, souring the diplomatic relation with our neighboring nation with another billion people. That story is being rewritten everyday.

I was told, many locals in Tawang were startled with the advances made by Chinese. Unaware of who was fighting for their cause, they ended up helping PLA. Many parts of Northeast India has only recently made a mark in the tourist map of India with roads and other tourism infrastructures booming.

In the 60s, forget about roads, there was hardly a similar language spoken in the hills. “We have only seen mainland Indians in Bollywood movies. I am so glad now you guys are coming to visit us.” Words by an old woman of the Apatani tribe which remains deeply rooted in my heart.

The mountainous valleys of Tawang are mostly bereft of living souls. Only a few wild yaks graze on the highland. 101 sacred glacial lakes adorn the valley, changing the face to frozen ice to palpable azure reflecting the dome of the sky depending on the time of the year!

Please note, visiting Tawang also means you will be cut off from the rest of the world at times. Only the major towns or market places had good network connectivity. No hotel had provided us with reliable wifi connection. Digital Nomading is a hard choice in Tawang.

Road-trip to Tawang, Suggested Routes

Things to know before planning a road-trip to tawang from Guwahati:

• Distance from Guwahati from Tawang: nearly 500 KM
• Nearest domestic airport to Tawang: Tezpur
• Nearest International airport to Tawang: Guwahati
• Nearest Railway Station: Tezpur Railway station (station code TZTB)
• Helicopter ride to Tawang: Pawan Hans conducts a couple of helicopter rides every week from Guwahati to Tawang. However, flying is subject to weather conditions and almost non existent during monsoon months. Price of a helicopter ride is INR 700 and you miss the whole fun of a road trip! Helicopter accidents are rather frequent incident too. Take your call after weighing the risk factors.

Road trip to Tawang also comes with prized sighting of the Jung falls (Nuranang falls), stopping by the majestic Sela lake by one of the highest motorable mountain pass, paying tribute at the Jaswantgarh war memorial, a martyr’s retiring abode and countless Mahayan Buddhist monasteries in Bomdila and Dirang. If you fly directly to Tawang, or reduce allotted time from the road trip, be prepared to let go of these attractions on the road. 

The Two routes leading to Tawang! 

There are two routes from Guwahati through which you can make this epic roadtrip to Tawang. Both the routes are scenic and span nearly 500 KM in stretch. We have taken one to reach Tawang and the other to make the reserve journey to the plains of Guwahati. 

Both the routes require a span of twelve to fifteen hours of driving, weather permitting, to complete the trip in a day. However, I suggest not to opt for reaching Tawang in a day from Guwahati. Not only you miss the breathtaking scenic beauty enroute, you also do not allow your body to get accustomed to the sudden height (acclimatize). Remember, the mountain air is thin and AMS can become lethal if not dealt with due reverence. 

Route one: (The route we took to reach Tawang for the onward journey)

Guwahati to Tawang to through Bhalukpong & Dirang

Guwahati> Tezpur> Bhalukpong (night stay) > Nameri National Park (night stay) > Dirang (night stay) > Sela Pass> Tawang

Also known as the Chariduar Tawang Road, this route is more scenic and has multiple stops on the road with an established network of hotels and guest houses. Route two takes a slight deviation with NH 13 however eventually merges with the same route from Bomdila. Time taken may be a bit less with Bhalukpong being omitted from the route.  

However, if you are running low on time and want to save a couple of days on the road, please consider the second route to Tawang. 

Route Two: (the reserve route we took to reach Guwahati on the way back from Tawang)

Guwahati> Sipajhar> Kalaigaon> Udalguri> Bhairabkunda (night stay) > Kalaktang> Rupa> Bomdila (night stay) > Sela> Tawang

Local Transport (Shared jeep or bus) to Tawang

You should account for at least three days or more for Tawang . There are shared local sumo that take locals on a whirlwind tour to Tawang in a day’s time, driving straight for 15 hours with fewer pit stops. I would not recommend a hurried road trip that strips away most of the fun! 

From Tezpur, you will find shared Sumo or jeeps leaving for Tawang. At a meagre 500 INR, you will be packed up in the car with locals and be taken to the next destination. The Jeeps run directly to Tawang, but they can drop you at Bomdila. You can spend a day in the mountain hamlet and take the jeep on the next morning and reach Tawang.

Shared jeeps usually do not make pit stops on the road unless the scene is pained with ethereal beauty of Sela Pass. Bus and Sumo leave as early as 5 am in the morning. This is Arunachal Pradesh. Sunrise takes place before anywhere else you have been to in India!

Our 10 days Itinerary for Road-trip to Tawang from Guwahati

We traveled to Tawang in the month of December. It was the first leg of our month long trip to Northeast India.

Obtaining a tourist permit for Tawang (ILP)

Arunachal Pradesh has 11 designated tourism routes in the state. Unless you are employed in the state, you are to strictly abide by these routes to enter Arunachal Pradesh as a tourist. Even when you are an Indian citizen (mainlanders, roughly speaking). No kidding. This rule applies in many parts of Northeast India, including Nagaland. 

To reach Tawang, you need to procure a permit called ILP (Inner Line Permit) . For the foreign readers, you need PAP. 

ILP can be procured online . Apply a couple of days before, online with necessary documents and a passport sized photograph with white background. ILP issued will be valid for 15 days and can be extended. We were asked to show the permit papers at Bhalukpong and near Dirang by a military man. Talks are ongoing for issuing ILP at the state border.

You need to procure another permit upon reaching Tawang to visit BumLa the next day. Permit to Bum La is a centralized, and regulated system and can be issued only a day before, keeping a watch on the weather condition. Only a limited number of vehicle can make it to Bum la on a given day (a lot like Rohtang in Himachal). Only an Indian passport holder can visit Bum la. 

I can not stress enough on planning the trip well to make it to Bum la. That was definitely the highlight of the entire Tawang trip. If you are coming all the way from plain land, you must make some effort to make it to Bum La, a pass as pristine as the beginning of the time! You should stay in Tawang for at least 3 days in order to arrange a visit to Bum La even if they cancel it on the first day based on the weather condition. In mountains, weather changes on an hourly basis.

You can also get in touch with your hotel to book it beforehand. I hate to compare destinations, but it is Bum La pass that in my mind renders Ladakh a second rank to Tawang! There, I said it! 

Cost of traveling to Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh (and Money saving tips)

We hired an Innova car that charged us 5000 rs per day. For Bum la pass, we had to pay another INR 5000 a day and hire a local car. Only cars from Arunachal Pradesh plate numbers can make it to Bum La. You may request your hotel to help you find a shared commute with other travelers (we were asked to accommodate two young men which halved the cost for us). 

We had also booked hotels enroute (which I have mentioned in every section). Average cost of the hotels were INR 2500 for a night. 

You may also choose to stay at homestays. You can also ask the driver to help you choose homestays. Drivers in this part of the country have an amazing network that may put WWW to shame. We didn’t know better and had made payment already. 

Homestays on the way to Tawang are amazing, but lack in a few specific amenities compared to the hotels. Think hot water supply. Think of an adjacent restaurant at the dark of night. Though a room heater is an essential part of life here. 

A meal on the way to Tawang at the adjacent Dhabas will cost you anywhere between rs 80 to 120. You hardly have the luxury of dining at a restaurant or cafe except for a handful options at the Tawang town.

Permits for both Tawang and Bum La can be arranged within INR 500. If you are arranging it through agents (whom you have to trust with your ID), it may cost you a few hundred bucks extra. 

Considering everything, the travel cost of a road trip to Tawang was capped within INR 75000. Nine days and two people. We were not backpacking. With homestays and shared transport, you can bring down the cost significantly. 

Shared jeeps to Tawang charge you INR 500 one way at every stop. Opting for a shared jeep or the state bus, you will bring down the commute cost to 500 from 5000 (thus a total of maximum 4500 for 9 days). That is a lot of money saved. 

If you have another family to share the car with, that will do significant saving too. 

Many opt to stay at the monasteries as well in exchange for a little donation. However, that could be challenging on a long winter nights, especially once you have crossed Bomdila.

Day 1: Reaching Guwahati

We started at the wee hours of the day and reached Guwahati by 11 am. We had a pit stop in Kolkata and in the short time to catch the connecting aircraft proved to be hastened!

Guwahati airport (Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport) was a tiny port back in time. In between the clatter of new construction, we had a glimpse of the illustrated masks of Majuli.

Here is the deal. If you reach Guwahati early enough, you may start for Bhalukpong that day itself, like we did. We had time designated for Assam during the last leg of the month-long journey in Northeast. 

If you can, allow Guwahati a few days. It is an absolutely beautiful city by the banks of Brahmaputra. Apart from being home to the iconic Kamakhya temple, Guwahati houses pretty old bungalows of colonial times, busy markets overflowing with vibrant colors and Paltan Bazar selling fresh grilled shrimps from the river. 

In Guwahati, you can in person arrange for an ILP, the mandatory permit for Tawang. You can rent a bike or car from one of the many tourist companies. The standard price is INR 500 per day. 

We contacted our driver from a discussion thread in Tripadvisor forum. His name was Anirul (9880692542). Anirul drove bravely and was very eager for candid photoshoots with a DSLR! S clicked his pictures with more heart than mine.

The best part of traveling the highway stretching across Assamese plainland is to so at the Dhabas and indulge in a traditional Assamese thali. The washroom breaks are terrible but the food is beyond worldly praise. It bears an astounding semblance with that of Bengal. 

A brassware large plate shining with the sheen of gold. A heaped up mould of rice in the middle, juxtaposed with countless bowls containing Assamese dishes, the Khar, the daal, The Tenga, the pitika, Chutney. To end the grand affair, they bring a beautiful bowl of Doi. Though named as Doi, the Assamese Mishti Doi is a distant cousin of Bengal, where dousing in sweetness is a rare occurrence. 

Words fail me when I start to praise the river fishes of Assam. The Chital peti, the Carp fishes, the small fish fries (Mouralas). The waterfowl which becomes tastier with winter thanks to Hasher Tel, the seasonal winter fat that a duck acquires!

The plain land of Assam was also preparing for the Bihu festival (Magh Bihu). Little did I know, I would later attend a Bihu in the dense forests of Manas National Park with the dwellers of Bodoland. 

Best place to stay in Guwahati is Paltan Bazar.

Day 2: Bhalukpong, Meeting river Jia Bharali

Distance between Guwahati to Bhalukpong: 240 KM (6 hours)

Having spent a day in Guwahati, you should start for Bhalukpong the next day. If you start early, you will have the evening to stroll by the riverside of Jia Bharali .

We reached Bhalukpong at sundown when the town was stripped of its power supply. We waited for 15 rough minutes as the border police checked our permits and asked a few questions. Who are we? Where are we headed? All amicable exchanges. 

A small clandestine momo selling shop was left forlorn. Next to it, a local shop was selling exotic fruit wines. Think strawberry wine. Litchi wine. Kiwi wine.

We could park the car at the hotel (Druk Hotel) for the night, who readily took order for dinner (Roti and chicken curry) and supplied us with two buckets of warm water. 

The next morning, I woke up to a gazillion birds’ chirping by the window! 

Bhaluppong is not sitting at a high altitude. One would be able to see narrow winding roads going down by the backyard eventually merging by the river bank. I found a house that had numerous rabbits caged in the backyard. I am not sure if those rabbits are just pets or food. 

The river Jia Bharali is the heart of Bhalukpong. Its pebbled bank, ice cold water and wide sandbanks are perfect backdrop for a quick family picnic. And locals do it in style. I have seen locals going fishing in the river and coming back with fresh catches. 

Once your heart is content with the riverbank, you should proceed towards the Tipi Orchidarium. Home to 7500 or more rare orchids, Tipi Orchidarium is India’s largest orchid house. Near to Tipi, you will also come across a small waterfall named Sesha falls.

Day 3: Nameri National Park: Birder’s Paradise!

Nameri National Park is located at a distance of 30 minutes drive from Bhalukpong. 

If you love birding and river rafting, there is no better place than the Nameri National Park in the whole of Northeast. Nameri Eco Lodge is one of the finest sustainable jungle resorts of the country, located right at the heart of Nameri. Stay here for a night (or more) and go for guided birding trails. B

e aware you might come across dangerous animals (think the elusive Bengal tigers, because Nameri is a tiger reserve or the Asiatic elephants). It is best to venture into the jungle with an experienced guide by side. 

Experienced birder and a Nameri veteran, Rupankar Sarkar suggested we go with the naturalist guide named Jitu Bohra. It is a good etiquette to tip the guides once your trip in the jungle is done. 

If you have plans to visit Kaziranga National Park, you may combine that with Nameri, a rather offbeat destination in Northeast India. 

If you do not get a place to stay at the Nameri Eco camp, you should stay at Bhalukpong and make a trip to the Nameri national park as a part of the day visit.

In Nameri, among hundreds of avian species, do look for the endangered white winged wood duck, endemic to the region. 

Day 4: Ascend to Dirang, the Scenic Stop En-route Tawang

Distance between Bhalukpong to Dirang is 135 km (6 hours).

From Bhalukpong. We started for Dirang at 8 am in the morning. It is a long journey covering 140 km of winding road and requires a day’s patience. 

Many prefer to stop at Bomdila, which is about 100 km ahead of Bhalukpong. In my mind, I find Dirang to be more scenic and Bomdila was anyway a stop on the way back. Another reason I prefer Dirang to Bomdila is, in case you can not make it to Tawang (Sela pass being closed due to excessive snow or similar hazards) you can still do a few activities in Dirang for a couple of days or so. 

Dirang sits atop an elevation of 1560 meters. It was Dirang where cold mountain air first kissed my face during this road trip.

We stayed at the Pemaling Dirang Resort, which looks endearingly over the Dirang valley. At a distance you can spot the Dirang river. She sang lullaby to us for the whole night! With increased demand, Dirang is now studded with many beautiful resorts and cottages, Luxury may not be the order of the day (yet) but you do have choices to make.

Things to do in Dirang valley

In order to reach Tawang, more people make a rushed pit stop in Dirang. However, I think the valley has a lot more on offer. Starting from a yak research center (which was closed when we visited) to beautiful steppes of paddy cultivation and olden rope bridges connecting the banks of Dirang river. 

At a distance, you shall see a winding road embracing the mountain. On the snowy nights, that road will be beyond reach and you shall have to take a detour. 

Dirang is best explored on foot, winding down and up the mountain roads and befriending curious children on the way. 

• Dirang Dzong

A living fort (dzong literally translates to fort) dating back to many centuries, Dirang Dzong is a steep hike from the Dirang Market. On the way you will stumble across many local houses. Corns are piled up and hung from the entrance doors. A peek into the houses will see you a long wooden staircase to access the first floor. 

The Dirang Dzong stood resilient to many invasions throughout history. 

• Khastung Monastery

On the opposite bank of the Dirag river, tucked away is one of the oldest Buddhist Gomphas of the world, Khastung monastery. Masked Khang Pa dancers perform here on sacred ceremonies. 

• Sangti Valley

You can visit Sangti valley instead of going back to Guwahati. However, if you have a clear go for Tawang, I would suggest visiting Tawang first and Sangti valley can wait for the reserve trip. It is a beautiful valley with countless Kiwi farms. Sangti valley is located 12 km off Dirang valley and can be accessed by a 40 minutes car drive. A river with crystal clear water flows by the side. Serene village life unfolds in myriad hues. Yak farming and grazing is one of the main earning sources of the people. 

• Dirang Hot Spring

One of the small mountain springs, Dirang Hot Spring is a small pit stop on the way to Sela. It is located close to the Dirang market. I saw a few local teenagers floating on the water. Visit this spot to get a bird’s eye view of the entire Dirang Valley and the widespread of Dirang river. During monsoon, that is how large the riverbed becomes. 

Day 5: Reaching Tawang

Distance between Dirang to Tawang: 135 km (5 hours)

The ride from Dirang valley to Tawang is the most breathtaking leg of the journey, with sky high passes, ice sheets on roads and barren tracts where one of the most dangerous wars of past centuries have been fought. 

We finished an early breakfast, bought a few woolen gloves from the Dirang market, S popped a pill to fight motion sickness and hopped into the car. 

S goes off to sleep as soon as the car starts to move. As the Innova climbed atop the hairpin bends, leaving past Dirang valley at a distance, I gasped in wonder! What a wonderful world this is!

At a distance, I could see jagged peaks. Cottony snow coyishly kisses their heads. The road we are on is barren. Next to it stands the blue sky. I can take an extra step and I would be lost in oblivion. Dirang is far away. Further away is home. I felt I am not from this world even! We had come this far!

In 3 hours, we reached Sela Lake tucked by the mighty Sela pass, one of the highest motorable roads in the world. It is important to reach Sela before noon. Firstly, the sky brings in ominous clouds after that, making it dangerous to cross the road. Secondly, you will have more time to frolic around the lake. 

Sela is not the only wondrous spot on the way to Tawang. 

We pranched around Sela lake for a while. The lake had just started to turn into a frozen sheet. A few yaks grazed by its side. All the glacial lakes of Tawang are sacred to locals. Sela is no different. 

With Sela done, we started to enter the dry arid part of the Himalayas, characterised with scarce rainfall. We spotted countless army camps. Signboards indicate where you can not partake photography. I stopped. 

My love with river Jia Bharali was rekindled after Sela. The river appeared soon after, now partly covered with thick ice shields. The geography had changed significantly. Not a single human habitat can be found at a distance. Towering alpine trees and thick ice blankets wait patiently by the road, ready to gulp it down when the high commander agrees. 

A few hours later, we stopped at Jaswant Garh War memorial. 

What is more pitiful to be a part of a species who is involved in warfare in such celestial land? The entire journey from Guwahati to Tawang was a reminder of the Indo-Sino war, remnant of which still haunts the mountains. The Doklam standoff was taking place at that time, scaring off tourists. We were not aware (blame 9/5 job and scant coverage of Northeast on media). However, we had not faced any issue apart from sensing a mild tension in the air whenever we engaged with the locals over political conversation. No wonder people prefer to keep politics to their own. A political discussion never yields well. 

A Sepoy of Indian Armed forces, Jashwant Singh Rawant breathed his last resisting the Chinese advancement in the mountains. He held the fort against enemy attack for several days, helped by a couple of local women (Nura and Sela, who are immortal in naming the lakes and the waterfalls of the surrounding area). 

Legends say, his spirit looms large in the mountains and presides over the officers deployed. “He even slaps them if they fall asleep!” Told a guide! Amused at the humane connection between a deceased soldier, I tried to picture how gallant it would have been to be there, defending against all the odds, with meagre armour supply. 

The adjacent museum and bunkers will show you a few things used by him. There is a quick snacking joint and a washroom (which remains the cleanest of all I have used in the whole of the country. Brilliant work there!)

We thought we were heading out for Tawang next, but Anirul, the driver told us he would stop by a beautiful waterfall on the condition we would hurry up! 

We agreed and boy oh boy, we reached the banks of Nuranang Waterfall (also known as Jang Waterfall). Home to a small hydel power plant, Nuranang Falls is where Nura river comes to meet Tawang Chu (chu is river in local language). 

The song Tanhai from the movie Koyla starring SRK & Madhuri was filmed at this fall. Hardly anyone else knew about this place before that. But what do I know? I was a five years old kid at that time anyway. 

A fellow Bengali traveler exclaimed, “Pran ta bhore gelo… My heart is so full” after hiking up to the fall. It is a short hike, not very steep. Even if you do not hike, you can see the fall from a distance. I walked till the river bank. On the other side of which, countless yak gently grazed.

Day 6: A day Exploring Tawang (and essential Stop to Acclimatize)

I can not thank my stars enough to have woken up to bright sunny days all through my stay in Tawang. One privilege, highly coveted among the tourist circuit. 

Your body needs a day to acclimatize with the sudden high. I suggest taking your first day in Tawang rather slowly. Rest. Drink loads of water. Take a car for local sightseeing. Refrain from drinking alcohol lest AMS gets the better of your health. It will jeopardize the rest of the trip. 

I was keen on learning the exodus of Tibetans from the original land. The Tawang monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery in India, safeguards and exhibits plethora of information of the local heritage like a premier institute does with élan. Tawang Monastery is believed to be the largest in the world, after that of Potala Palace, Lhasa .

We started the day from the door of the Tawang monastery. We took time to speak to the young monks, clad in blood marron robes. We wandered inside the profound prayer hall at the center of which Maitreya Buddha sits in the state of Nirvana. This is where the morning prayer ceremony takes place. You can attend as an onlooker on certain days of the week. 

The monastery had monk hostels, and a museum adjacent, exhibiting remnants of history and political ties with Indian nation state. Posters of the 14th Dalai Lama are on display everywhere. 

The monastery courtyard was being used as a drying place of few crops. A few hens roamed around fearlessly. A fat cat sat on the rooftop next, with closed eyes. A few monks basked under the sun. The sun shone bright for a brief period. Everyone wanted to make the best of it. 

At the prayer room of the tawang monastery, we lit a lamp filled with yak butter. 

We learnt about a nunnery located closeby, Ani Gompha. I have been to distant parts of Southeast Asia and Ladakh, but never could spot a Buddhist nun except for Tawang. S was hesitant ,if he would be allowed, But they allowed him to enter, probably seeing me as the accompanying traveler. 

The Nunnery is located amid a small settlement, which seemed to me like a residential area. A monetary stood erect, where a nun, very young in age, sat with a book in hand and chanted. She looked at us and engaged in a conversation soon after. She asked for my number, and wanted to call us on Wednesday as she would make a trip to the town. 

After a brief visit to one of the cafes at the Tawang town, we proceeded towards the light and sound show at the war memorial. The show lasts for 30 minutes, but be sure to reach soon to get a place in the front row. The open air show ends with the sun going down and wind bursting in. Take layers to cover up well. Mountain wind can be lethal for the uninitiated. 

Oh, in between all these, do not forget to ask you hotel to arrange for the Bum La permit for next day.

Day 7: Visit to Bum La Pass, Tawang

With thin air and distant peaks, Tawang poses an imminent risk for those with weak lung capacity. Think twice before heading out to Bum La if those conditions persist. Bum La is located at an elevation of 16000 feet. Google map will show you a meagre distance of 35 KM but that can turn invisible for mere mortals. 

However, you can make it to Bum la pass, you will talk about it forever, like I am doing now! 

If at all, Bum La turns down beyond possibility, head out to Zemithang. It is a secluded valley bordering Bhutan. The drive to Zemithang is a scenic escapade amid dense lush forest and remains unknown to the greater population. Zemithang is home to the gold studded 12th century monastery of Gorsam Chorten, which opens its doors to devotees once in 12 years! 

Now coming back to Bum la, let me begin with enough (and more) emphasis on starting early. Early in Arunachal is not your regular early. This is the easternmost part of the country. 5 am in the morning and you have a valley awashed with sun rays. 

So, start early. 

We thought it would be fine if we start by 8 am. Then the sumo we had hired, had a flat tire. He asked us to wait. I panicked and called and called a few more times. The driver came, picked us up, stopped the car by a chicken shop and got into fixing his tier. My anxiety shot up sky-high but I looked at the Buddha statue of Tawang visible at a distance and took a few deep breaths. Sometimes, it is okay to trust destiny. There, my Indic heart listens. 

We have a saying in Tibet: If a problem can be solved there is no use worrying about it. If it can’t be solved, worrying will do no good.” ―  Heinrich Harrer,  Seven Years in Tibet

We started for Bum la by 11 am. While ascending we saw the other tourist cars start descending. 

We drove directly towards the India-China border, also touted as the Maitreestall, the friendship zone. As a civilian, you are unlikely to be able to cross this point. This is also the highest point I have ever ascended in my life. The peaks at a distance looked like my neighbors. It started to snow and we scrambled inside the Tata Sumo to descend down. 

Bum la Pass is an arduous road. Men and women (with very small children on shoulder) were at work to widen the road, so troops moved at ease. I tried to speak to some of them, but Hindi was not a common tongue and English is the language of aliens here. With a darker skin tone and longer nose, they looked very different than the Monpas. 

I recall 6 of the sacred glacial lakes on the way to Bum la. All of them were covered with a thick sheet of ice, and looked menacing. 

We stopped at the Madhuri lake, and were the last to leave as the Sun started to pack up for the way. Also known as the Sungester Lake, Madhuri lake was resultant of a massive earthquake. The erect branches looked a lot like Periyar lake of Thekkady, Kerala. 

At Bum la, you should also make a pit stop at the PTSO lake, and many other but we rushed down the winding road (how am I alive?) to race with time. that story will wait. But remember, start early to visit Bum la. There will be other tourists, but I am assuming your life is dearer than offbeat places, no?

Day 8: Start the Descend from Tawang, Stop at Bomdila

Distance between Tawang and Bomdila: 180 km (6 hours)

The last day at Tawang, we had started to ascend. The night before, I had a mild attack of AMS. It is Bum La that cast her spell if I can reason it correctly. Nonetheless, I am glad I did it and was finally going down the next day. 

On the way we stopped at Sela. The ice sheets had turned into sheet blankets of white snow. Who would know this is actually a lake and not another meadow? I could not spot any yak nearby. 

In a few weeks time, I read in the newspaper, Tawang was cut off from the mainland with incessant snowfall. 

Bomdila was a populous town compared to other stops we made on the road. There is a monastery, a craft center and ethnographic museum. I remember walking by the Bomdila market and spotting a high school. Children practiced football at that ground, under a starry starry night. A wall graffiti read, “Children by choice not by chance!”. It read so much better than the usual population control slogan of India, “Hum Do Hamare Do… we two our two!”

Day 9: Reach Guwahati at the dark of the night

Distance between Bomdila to Guwahati: 270 km (8 hours)

From Bomdila, the downward hill drive to Guwahati is a rather melancholic experience. You finally realise you have to bid adieu to the last Shangrila of the Himalayas, the land of celestial beauty and turn to the mundane drudgery of life. The snow capped peaks leave the last residue of glamor on the dome of sky. Sparse population becomes redundant. The lost network connection finds a way back as smartphones start to chime in with new life. 

On the way back, we met an armed forces troop. The Man was posted in Kashmir. On his advance to the North eastern frontier, he wanted to know how cold would be Bum La. A young man in the 30s from Delhi. 

We also came across a rural settlement, where a tribal woman was weaving a skirt. It took anywhere between 7 days to 10 days to finish one. She was not going to sell it. S was looking for a washroom and the son took him inside the house. They asked us to join for lunch, but we had a long way to go and had to refuse the offer. 

At the end, all that remains is kindness. 

We reached Guwahati by 8 pm. The massive Brahmaputra was there, unchallenged. So was the fiery orange sun. The day’s travel worn us out and we started for the next destination (Shillong) the next day. Besides, we could not trust the treacherous  roads to facilitate another timely onwards journey. 

Day 10: Leave Guwahati

On day 10, you can leave Guwahati and start a new journey. We started for Meghalaya. The Himalayas had ceded to the Khasi-Jayanti hills of Khasi and Garo dwellers. the Buddhist monasteries are replaced with countless Jesus Christ’s altars. I will write about that experience soon. 

Best Time to Visit Tawang

Mountains are an old whimsical lass, having no control on her mood swings. On more days than I could recall, I woke up to the view of a sun washed valley on the way up Tawang. Soon after, ominous boats of crowd would float in, making the inhospitable high passes connecting Tibetan arid land look precarious. 

In the realm of high mountains, each day unfolds a new beauty of the land. The deep snow of winter months make Tawang wear a white shimmery blanket. Frequent roadblocks will render Tawang to be an isolated world for continued months, with Sela pass being cut off with impenetrable cover of snow. The fierce monsoon winds, on the other hand, blows things out of proportion. Benign streams turn into monstrous flows, making numerous serpentine bends, making and breaking on their downward paths. Landslides, broken roads are regular occurrences. The white nights of Tawang wear a lush green shawl in the rain. 

You need to plan your trip with a bit of luck. Ideally, you want the road to Tawang to be open for the handful of days you will be traveling in the valley. You want the road to remain open on your way back. Upon completion of these two conditions, you should think about the amount of snow the mountains will bestow on you! 

I will try to break down Tawang’s generic weather condition based on each season. But remember, remember, mountains are a whimsical lass… Her promises are in particular meant to be broken. 

November to Mid-January: The onset of winters in the Himalayas. December is the best time to visit Tawang in my honest opinion. We visited Tawang from 20th December onwards, for 10 days. The sky is mostly clear with azure paint. Scant snowfall at the end of the night reminds you of the long wintry nights that are about to commence. 

Mid-January to March: The winter has taken control on Tawang in all her might. Bitter cold snow has masked the valley in entirety. Sela Pass that connects Tawang with the rest of the world is buried deep under the snow. The cemented road is lost in oblivion for the longer parts of the winter months. Even if you make it in tawang, you may not be able to come out of the valley. 

Only the fortunate ones can actually make it till the end of Tawang valley bypassing the hazardous snow. I had met a family from Delhi in Dirang, for whom it was the third time roadtripping Tawang. Third time lucky as they trusted and the Universe listened to them. We are mere mortals, we may shy away from attempting the ascend. The order forces stand in guard in the knee deep snow at elevations higher 3000 meters. I wonder how the supply route stays active for the prolonged months of winters. 

April to June: The end of winter and a bright summer shines on. Summer in Tawang may sound oxymoronic considering the scorch that is reigning in the rest of the country. However, it is time the snow melts. Life finds a way. Yaks come out to graze in grace. The harbinger of life’s cyclical play starts again. Tawang returns to her vibrant ethereal beauty. Blue lakes, green vegetation and pink sunset canvas play along, reflecting hues to the traditional Monpa skirts which heart the riot of the colors at ease. Many prefer to visit Tawang in the summer months for ease of access, less snow and avoiding the bitter cold. Sela lake is not frozen at this point of time. 

July to October: The age of shrill thunder and prodigious rains begins in Tawang with monsoon clouds bearing news from Arabian Sea. Those who have not seen, it is hard to convince them of the inexplicable beauty of the lush green that monsoon brings forth in the high Himalayas. Think Kerala, with a wind storming in at higher altitude with shrill sound of incessant rain. You will wake up surrounded with pregnant clouds. Showers and ominous clouds will appear on a cycle. Monsoon reaches the eastern end of Himalaya sooner and remains there for the longest time. Mood of the days changes abruptly, revealing myriad colors of the mountain passes. It is a matter of luck to be able to roadtrip to tawang during monsoon, given frequent landslides are order of the rainy season. 

Please note, this is a generic overview of the seasonal occurrence in the mountains. I can only tell you about my experience of traveling in the mountains and reaching Tawang which may drastically vary from yours given the ensuing climate crisis of the world is impacting the fragile Himalayas to a great extent. As a rule of thumb, choose the summer shoulder season of wintry months to visit Tawang to get a clear road ahead. 

When all the planning and precautions fail with a mean lasting roadblock or landslide, BRO (Border road organization, a wing of Indian Army) helps clear the path. Tourists influx or not, troops have to move, That is the curse of the subcontinent.

Is it safe to visit Tawang?

If your safety concern is drawn around clashes with others, say molestation, robbery and likes, you are absolutely safe in tawang. In the 10 days, we came across rural habitats of local tribes and countless Buddhist monasteries. Life is humble in the mountains. Resources are scarce, hence revered. The old way of life automatically reaches people to respect nature and embrace sustainable lifestyles in sync with nature. 

I have seen small kids traversing a long way to school on a steep uphill climb, with books in hand. Pages flip, flags flutters. Women sit patiently by the river Jia Bharali to fish. They tend to small kitchen gardens, where radish and cauliflowers are grown. Stalks of the vegetables will be cooked and served with a warm plate of Rice and Daal. Waste? What is that? A few yaks have a red piercing on their ears, indicating they have been domesticated. They graze nonchalant to all the commuters brushing past. An old man stands at a distance. His wrinkled face seemed to have hearted the map of timeless Tawang.

Safety is not a concern in Tawang. 

But nature can be vehement. The roads are laden with shooting stone, streams overflowing roads which may turn violent at the advent of rain. A fury of dust swivels at a distant landslide zone. Treacherous snow can protrude a trap. 

If the mighty Himalays want, you will come across an astounding nature trail, witnessing the changing face of the mountains from Himalayan foothills and the craggy peaks of high Himalayas, a journey of a lifetime! Unfortunately, the whim of nature can not be neglected. Good news, I (like many others) was bestowed to go all the way up to Bumla. Nature agreed with me. I was armed with the necessary permits. What I had seen was blissful and I hope all my readers get a chance to experience the same in a responsible (And unharmed) way. I guess it is my anxiety that is compelling me to stress on the dangers involved consecutively.

Responsible Travel tips for Tawang

Deeply spiritual in nature, Tawang is filled to the brim with the prayers flags. It feels like mankind is bowing down to the mountains, the omnipotent nature. Locals are humble and rather shy. There is a strong sense of “distinctness” in the culture. You may mistake it as “othering” but you should educate yourself on the power struggles of the land since millenia. 

It is imperative to be respectful to every custom and cultural practice of Tawang (or the fringe villages you come across on the way). 

Maintain silence while entering the Buddhist monasteries. If you plan to attend a morning prayer session, observe it in silence. Refrain from touching the monks. There is a buddhist nunnery tucked atop the mountains, where you need to ask if you are allowed to enter as a single male traveler. S could enter as I was accompanying him. Ask if you have any doubt. Your driver is likely to be the best guide.

Do not venture into distant land if weather looks like a deterrent. If you are stuck, the world has to move to bring you back to life (and they do). For every resource you consume, please be thankful to be able to access them at that astounding height despite all the odds. 

Last but not the least, it goes without saying to bring back all the plastic waste from your travels lest they impact the fragile ecology of Himalayas. Otherwise, come monsoon, the floods will bring them down, displacing thousands residing at the foothills. Google Brahmaputra flood and you will know why waste management is of utmost importance in the mountains. 

In the riddle of permits and dangerous roads, Tawang can only be experienced best with the local guides. Wander in the town and you shall meet many locals, eager to show you around. Though they do not instantly open up to strangers, you need to earn their trust with a genuine heart. Rest unfolds as a part of human connection!

Things to eat in Tawang

Compared to other routes of Arunachal Pradesh, Tawang attracts a substantial crowd of tourists. Many Bengalis come here as a part of summer holiday or Durga Puja vacations. As a result, the small joints enroute serve decent bengali thali options, with a staple of rice, daal and chicken curry. Fish is a luxury in Tawang. You will often come across hot bowls of maggi noodles at the roadside Dhabas.

However, the gourmand in me looks for hotplates of local food to touch the pulse of the land. Tawang did not disappoint. 

Bowl full of short grained red rice coupled with a mushroom curry made a dinner meal a day. Button mushrooms and bamboo shoots romance with carrots pieces, onions and yak milk. Yak milk is found in abundance and cooked abundant too. I tasted chicken curry, where chicken breasts were poached in yak milk. The hot momos are cooked with a touch of fiery red chilies. Dragon restaurant served us momo fried in red hot sauce and an assortment of soup and tea( Sueja – the butter tea), all riddled with yak milk. The thick cream and buttery aftertaste of yak milk are stuff dreams are made of! 

To battle the winter months, Monpas of tawang often store fermented wheat, dried fish, yak meat and fermented cheese in store. Do not miss to taste the local moonshine in Tawang, also known as Chang. A sip on the glass of Chang and you are ready to take on the world!

Souvenir to buy in Tawang for art & craft lovers

I have a thing for collecting edible souvenirs. I readily picked up candy, yak jerky, yak butter and small flags from Tawang main market. At the main market, you will also find a number of traditional Tiberan jewelry studded with turquoise and corals on silver plates. The hand painted elaborate Thangka paintings are gorgeous. The markets at Bomdila and Dirang are stocked with beautiful shawls, tubical skirts that the Monpa women wear, jewelry, Buddhist prayer wheels. They are stacked with each other in a colorful manner and brings out the best of  

I found a Marwari man selling heavy woolen at Dirang town. Upon enquiring, I learnt he is the third generation of his family. His extended family has a few shops at Tezpur and Itanagar (capital of Arunachal Pradesh). As a small business owner, I have nothing but respect for the man who ventured all the way up in the hills to run his shop. I nod in elation looking at the invisible trade-human connect.

FAQs on Traveling to Tawang

Is tawang worth a visit.

I have been to more than 20 states in India. I think tawang is one of the top 3 destinations in this country. I loved it more than Ladakh. I also think it remains obscure from the regular tourist trails and is a rather offbeat destination in India. The road trip from Guawahti to Tawang is the ubiquitous best travel experience, especially in December. 

When can you find Snow in Tawang?

You will find snow on the way to Tawang. Sela Pass flaunts snow caps all the year round, with exaggerated snow muscles in the winters. You will also find snow on the way to Bum la. 

Is it okay to travel to Tawang with a small kid?

Infants under the age of 12 months often have their lungs undeformed. It may be a challenge for them to breathe in the thin air of Tawang. A consultation with the medical practitioner is a must before you take the trip, because there are many small kids in Tawang as well. 

Best Route to visit Arunachal Pradesh

For the more scenic route, visit Tawang from Bhalukpong. The route goes through Nameri National Park, Bomdila, Dirang, Sela Pass and ultimately reaches Tawang. The other route through Kalaigaon and Rupa is relatively shorter but lacks in tourist infrastructure. There are no petrol pumps from Bomdila and the jungles are infamous for robbery.

About Tawang

Things to Do

Tawang Monastery: is located 2 km from the town centre. It is the largest in India, and the second largest in Asia, is three stories high, flanked by 925 feet compound wall, and houses 65 residential buildings. Wow! It is quite a sight to behold. For a fee of INR 20, you can also see an exhibition of antiques inside. More on the monastery.

Urgelling Gompa: is located 4 km from the town centre, close to the Tawang Helipad. This Gompa commemorates the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama. It is an ancient, peaceful, and quaint monastery.

Dorjee Khandu Memorial and Museum: Dorjee Khandu was a much-loved chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh who died tragically in a helicopter crash on a trip from Tawang to Itanagar. He was born in Tawang. The museum that houses his things and chronicles his life is stunning and well worth a visit. Entry is free of cost. At the time of writing this, Dorjee Khandu’s son (Pema Khandu) was the chief minister of the state.

Buddha Park is located near Circuit House in Tawang and has a huge statue of Buddha on a hill. One can get stunning views of the town from the spot along with a clear view of the Tawang monastery.

War Memorial: is located 1 km from the town centre. The memorial is dedicated to the martyrs of the 1962 India-China war. There are also light and sound shows in the evening (different timings for Hindi and English language shows) which, although jingoistic, is an illuminating documentary on the Indian army and the Indo-China war. The documentary also touches upon important landmarks of the region. Must attend.

Visit the coffee shops for some delectable cakes and coffee. Dharma coffee (close to the monastery. Great coffee, cosy seating, and plenty of books to while away time on a snowy day) was my favourite, followed by Soinam House of Cakes , and Phuns Café . The latter two are in the old market.

Bum La, Madhuri Lake, Penga Teng Tso Lake: A day trip to see all these costs INR 5500. Bumla Pass is 38 km from Tawang and was famously used by the 14th Dalai Lama to escape from China-occupied Tibet into India. Located at 4630 m/15,000 ft, it is a must-visit spot. In winter, temperatures go as low as -25 degrees, and if the snow is too much, the army may not issue permits to visit. A permit costs INR 50. Madhuri Lake was formed after an earthquake in 1950 and was named so after the shooting of the Hindi movie Koyla here, starring Madhuri Dixit. The Pangang Teng Tso Lake or PT Tso Lake is located at around 12,000 feet and is frozen during winter. This route can also include a visit to Gyangon Ani Gompa (15 km) and Brahmdungchung Gompa (12 km).

Zemithang, Lumla, and Gorsam Chorten: The Zemithang village is right by the Bhutan border. The Gorsam Chorten is 5 km away. Reaching a height of 100 ft, the Gorsam Chorten is the largest in the region and dates back to the 12 th century. The inner sanctum of the Chorten is opened to the general public only once in 12 years. This event is accompanied by a lot of fanfare. The last it opened was in Mar 2017. It cost us INR 7500 for a round-trip visit in a hired car, but that may have been because we made a last-minute mid-morning booking. The roads have no snow even in winter and it feels like driving through normal valley roads. The Gorsam monastery was really nice and peaceful. On 31 st Dec, they were celebrating the birthday of a Buddhist leader. There was cake and beer (afterwards, and on the side). This route also includes BTK waterfall (80 km, and unimpressive) and Dolma Lhangang (47 km from Tawang, in Lumla Village). If you have the time, you can take a slight detour to Chaksam Bridge (25 km from Tawang).

Jang Waterfall, Jaswant Garh Memorial, and Sela Pass: All three make for a gorgeous visit, especially in winter. They have an interesting (heroic and tragic) backstory to boot. Jaswant Garh and Sela Pass are named after two heroic figures of the 1962 Indo-China war. On 17 Nov 1962, Rifleman Jaswant Singh, two of his comrades, his girlfriend Sela, and her sister Nura held out against the advancing Chinese army and kept them at bay for the next 72 hours. As per legend, Jaswant single-handedly killed around 300 Chinese soldiers. He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously for his bravery. The memorial built for him, called Jaswant Garh War Memorial, is 25 km from Tawang and on the route between Tawang and Bomdila/ Tezpur. Monpa sisters Sela (also Jaswant’s girlfriend) and Sela’s sister Nura helped Jaswant by supplying ammunition and food. Sela Pass and Sela Lake are named in Sela’s memory. The lake is frozen in winter and is a sight to behold. Nuranang (waterfalls) is named after Sela’s sister. Nura was captured and tortured by the Chinese army for information. The legend of Jaswant Singh is oft-quoted around the place and he is revered by the jawans posted there. More on the story here .

Nov 2022 update: Itanagar now has a commercial airport (Donyi Polo) which is served by carriers such as Indigo.

Reaching and leaving Tawang turned out to be quite an adventure for us. If you have your car and driver, then you’re set. Most travellers opt for this. Daily rates tend to be around INR 5000 (fuel and driver charges extra). I recommend you get a driver from Tawang and not from Guwahati; the latter promise a lot but are mostly unable to drive on treacherous mountain roads, particularly when there’s snow. However, drivers from Arunachal Pradesh / Tawang also usually charge more.

We didn’t want to be enslaved to a car and a timetable, so we decided to wing it, which was a bittersweet experience, once the unexpected snow came in. While we didn’t have to pay for the car and the driver when we were holed up in Tawang as it snowed nonstop for two days, we also found it very difficult to get out of town.

Here’s what happened.

Helicopter to Tawang

As soon as we realized it was possible, we were so excited to fly to Tawang in a helicopter! We realized soon enough though, that it is a pain! There is little or no predictability – on whether your booking is confirmed, or whether you’re going to be flying at all that day. For tourists, restricted on time, this may not be very useful, but if you can try flying at least one way in a chopper. It’s quite an experience.

The process goes thus:

• Call the booking number on the website
• They will take down your names
• They may (or may not, you can bite your nails to shreds waiting) confirm one day before if you can fly on the requested date
• You arrive on the scheduled day 45 min – 1 hour before to make payment in cash. You are handed a boarding pass and luggage tags
• Security check-in happens as in airports but is not as strict (no restrictions on liquids in baggage for instance. Baggage limit is 10 kg per person but I’ve seen more get on). There are functional waiting-lounges and toilets with no water
• Sunday is a holiday, but there can be unscheduled no-fly days

The website to check helicopter timings and contacts is this . However, not all helicopters ply as scheduled, and seats are also sometimes reserved for dignitaries. At the time of writing this, there was no way you could book online or pay in advance to confirm your spot.

We managed to fly from Naharlagun (Itanagar) to Guwahati to Tawang without incident. The Naharlagun booking official at least picked up the phone the times we called. We had a disappointing experience on our way back from Tawang to Guwahati while trying to get on the chopper. The Tawang helicopter official almost never picked up his phone, finally confirmed face-to-face we were flying on the 1 st of Jan (after having tried on the 30th and 31st which were cancelled due to inclement weather and overbooking, respectively), and even wrote down our names in his little pocketbook, but when we arrived at the helipad, it was locked. Apparently, the helicopter was not flying that day. We had even sent a follow-up message with our names, but we were not informed of the non-flight status. Only when I called up the Naharlagun chopper officer was I informed so. It threw all our plans into a tizzy.

But we did next, the below.

Sumo to Tawang

Shared sumo cars ply from Tawang to Tezpur and Guwahati in Assam. Each sumo ferries 10 passengers (2 in the front with the driver, 4 in the middle, and 4 in the back – so yes, quite cramped). It costs INR 1500 to travel to Tezpur per person and takes 10-12 hours (320 km). It takes INR 1800 per person to travel to Guwahati (555 km) and takes 14 hours. 4, 5, and 6 (side middle) are the best seats in the sumo, followed by 1 and 2 (next to the driver in the front).

Since it was New Year and the snow had been heavy, we found it very difficult to book a place. We wanted to avoid the bumpy ride that would come seated at the back. So, ultimately, we ended up hiring the entire sumo between Tawang and Tezpur. It cost us INR 13,000. But the good part, it was all ours, we spent some leisure time off at Jang Falls, Jaswant Garh and Sela Pass, which wouldn’t have been possible if we’d been travelling in shared sumo. The Sumo also dropped us off at Tezpur at a hotel of our choice. This was followed by a visit to Kaziranga. That itinerary is here .

Alternate route to Tawang

Many people travel the route from Guwahati or Tezpur > Bhalukpong > Bomdila> Dirang , staying overnight at one or more places along the way. Dirang seemed like a quaint town by the riverside, and I wouldn’t have minded staying a night there. Lost With Purpose has information on how to do this route yourself which was very helpful in our planning albeit some of the information was outdated (as is to be expected).

Where to Stay

We stayed at a budget place and a mid-range hotel. Both were excellent in their own ways, given the money we paid.

Mon-Valley: is a budget accommodation that has a homestay feel. It is located in the Nehru market, and so at a very convenient location. The landlady is kind and helpful. The rooms though are very basic. Charges are 1200/ night. The best part about the motel is the restaurant downstairs which serves delectable food at very attractive prices. Tawang Heights: is upscale and close to the sumo stand/ market, with great rooms (heater, kettle, warm water, large bathrooms, clean and plentiful towels) and even better, an awesome view. Rates are INR 3000/ night. Link to information on the hotel.

Other options are homestays such as Dondrub . It has three cottages and is highly rated.

The Circuit House series of lodges belong to the Arunachal Pradesh government and offer basic economic accommodation. Booking them is not straightforward though. You could probably call them.

What to Buy

Peach and Kiwi wine — made in the Ziro Valley, or from Bhutan — are delicious and make for good take-home presents. Arunachal Pradesh also makes some delicious beer too. I purchased their uniquely imprinted teacups (INR 100 apiece). Their warm water flasks are also quite incredible: keeping water warm for over twelve hours in the cold. These are available everywhere. I didn’t see much point in buying winter clothing; many of the locals wear clothes purchased from Decathlon which are easily available.

Good to know

The mobile network works fine in the town (even during snowfall) but there are fluctuations. On the road, there are patches of non-connectivity.

Electricity goes out often and there are inverters and generators. In December/ January and during snow, there are more disruptions than usual. The generators don’t work, and in cheaper places (as we faced in Mon Valley) the going can get tough.

• First, I go to TripAdvisor and check out top things to do, top places, and experiences. I use this to make a rough itinerary.
• From TripAdvisor I often go to Viator to book day tours. I love their user friendly platform and flexible cancellation policies. Compare their offers with GetYourGuide , which is great too.
• I book my accommodations in Booking because of their flexibility and that the bookings are easily cancellable. The mobile app is great and the genius discounts are on point.
• I recommend getting the Priority Pass . It gives you access to airport lounges and has helped me through many long waits. It’s definitely well worth the money.
• And I am literally always on Skyscanner . I get to see the best airfares, and the airline / third party providers offering them. Try the “From: origin city” to “To: Everywhere” option to ignite your imagination on where to travel to next.

Is it safe to travel with a 4 year old child? Will the cold and height be too much for the child?

Although I am a strong believer that children adapt better than adults 🙂 I do think it’s a tad too much and rustic for a 4-year-old unless he is used to traveling. The journeys are long and high.

Hi Abhishek, hire a seasoned driver (preferably a Tawang local) although no one can guarantee unexpected road closures. When I went, we were snowed in for two days. So prepare for contingencies.

Best Time To Visit Tawang: Overview Of Seasons

Planning to visit Tawang? The historic place attracts tourists from all over the world, who come for the mesmerizing sights and breathtaking nature. But it’s important to know when the best time to visit Tawang is, otherwise you won’t get to enjoy the beautiful region in all its glory!

Read on to learn more about the different seasons in Tawang, the best time to visit, and what some of the top things to do in the area are!

Answer: Summer Season

The best time to visit Tawang is the summer season. Most tourists that come to Tawang want to visit the spectacular monastery, and it is best experienced between March and June. This is the warmest season in the region, but you’re still not getting particularly high temperatures.

Tawang Hill Station sits at a rather high altitude, so it’s never going to be extremely hot there. The nights are rather chilly even in the summer, so it’s smart to pack some hoodies and a lightweight jacket.

The average highs during the summer season are in the 50-70s, while the average lows range from 10 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Naturally, early spring is the colder season in Tawang, so if you’d rather have nice and warm weather, it would be best to plan a June visit. It’s just before the start of the Monsoon season with some 12 days of rain on average and some of the warmest weather you will get in Tawang.

That might sound like a lot of rain, but it’s really not – it isn’t constant rainfall but rather scattered showers all over the region. It’s just enough to keep nature spectacularly green until the monsoon season hits and it starts to look like a fairytale.

May and June are the ideal months to visit Tawang. The warm weather is easy to enjoy, there’s very little rain, and all the tourist attractions are open. This is the busiest season in the region, so don’t be surprised to see other crowds in the area. It’s worth noting that Tawang rarely gets super busy – the remote location and inaccessibility of the area discourage many tourists from visiting.

Reaching Tawang is an entire adventure on its own, what with the remote airport and long drive. It’s a fun adventure if you’re visiting in the summer when the roads are in excellent condition. It’s not as fun if you’re visiting in the off-season, since there’s always a chance of the roads being blocked off due to the weather.

Although the summer season in Tawang technically starts in March, you should know that the region is much colder in March and April. There’s even less precipitation than in May and June, but snowfall is still possible in early March.

The average temperatures in March and April are in the mid-50s during the day, with nights in the mid-30s. May and June have slightly higher temperatures – mid-60s during the day and 50s in the night.

Monsoon Season (July – September)

July, August, and September are monsoon seasons in Tawang. The temperatures are pretty high, but the rain discourages most tourists from visiting. It rains almost every single day in Tawang during the monsoon season, and unless you’re fine with the humidity, you’ll want to skip traveling to the region during these months.

The average highs during the Monsoon season are in the mid-60s and 70s, while the lows are in the high 50s. This is the hottest season in the region but the heavy rainfall prevents the temperatures from getting unbearably high.

In July, the daily chance of precipitation is around 60%. That number is slightly lower in August and September (around 50%), so September is probably the best month to visit during the monsoon season.

The rain does add to the beauty of the place quite a bit. Everything looks rather lush and green, and the streams start to swell. This is a good season to explore the beautiful nature surrounding the monastery, especially if you are into hiking. It’s worth noting that the rain can impact the accessibility of some trails, but it’s nothing to be scared of, as long as you have the appropriate gear.

Also, it’s important to mention that it’s not going to rain constantly in Tawang. The showers are scattered throughout the region, so it’s possible to have some nice, sunny days as well.

The main issue with the monsoon season is that heavy rain can sometimes close off roads and make it impossible to leave the town for a little while. But this rarely happens – sure, the roads will be riskier if they get wet but that’s usually as bad as it gets.

Winter Season

The winter season in Tawang is from November to February. These are the coldest months in Tawang, with average temperatures that range from 12 to 50 degrees (Fahrenheit). There’s often heavy snowfall in the area that can make it difficult to move between towns, and this usually discourages tourists from visiting in the winter. However, winters in Tawang can be pretty magical, especially if you are into skiing.

There are quite a few tall peaks surrounding Tawang, and they get completely covered with snow in December. Skiing here is a magical experience, so there’s definitely a reason to visit Tawang even in the winter season. The snowfall can sometimes last until May in the mountains, so keep that in mind if you’re planning to go hiking in early spring.

There are certainly advantages of visiting Tawang in the winter, but there are also a few things to keep in mind. Winter sees quite a lot of snowfall in Tawang Hill Station and it’s not uncommon for major roads to be blocked because of the snow. A lot of the tourist attractions become inaccessible as well, and it can be very difficult to move from town to town.

If you want to experience this magical place in the winter, you’ll need to do some serious preparation. That includes packing your warmest waterproof clothes, but also contacting the Tawang tourist offices and checking the conditions. It’s possible for snow to block off the entire town and there’s really no point in traveling halfway across the world if you can’t even reach your destination.

Also, it’s not a great idea to go hiking when there’s a thick layer of snow on the ground. There’s a risk of avalanche and it’s easy to get lost when there’s a very thick snow blanket on the ground. You risk getting hurt – or worse – so unless you’re an experienced hiker and familiar with the region, it’s best not to explore any snow-covered hiking trails.

How To Reach Tawang

Tawang is not exactly an easy place to reach, at least for the average tourist. There aren’t any direct flights into Tawang – the closest airport is Tezpur airport in Assam, India. It’s some 350 kilometers away from Tawang, so there’s still quite a lot of traveling to be done even after you land.

Tawang is connected with roads to Tezpur airport, and that’s the only way to reach it. It takes anywhere between 9 and 14 hours to drive the 350 kilometers from Tezpur to Tawang, and that’s only if the roads are in good condition. There are buses between two towns and you can also opt for a shared taxi ride. The taxi is a little faster than the bus, but you’re still in for a very long journey.

In addition to that, you must be aware of the road conditions before you fly into Tezpur. Heavy rain and snow can block off the road and make it impossible to reach Tawang, and it’s in your best interest to avoid experiencing that for yourself.

Top Things To See And Do In Tawang

It’s such a hassle to reach Tawang that it’s unlikely you will travel there more than once in a lifetime. So, make sure you catch all the best attractions in the area the first time around!

Tawang Monastery

Most people who travel to Tawang come to see the Tawang monastery – it’s the second largest monastery in the world, right after the Potala Palace in Tibet. It sits near the top of a mountain, offering a breathtaking view of the Tawang Chu valley with its snow-covered mountain peaks and forest.

The monastery is built like a three-story mansion with a huge assembly hall, 65 living quarters, and many other structures. By far the most popular attraction at the monastery is the 18-foot tall statue of Buddha Shakyamuni

Tawang monastery was built in the 17 th century by Mera Lama Lodre Gyatso, at the instructions of the 5th Dalai Lama. This monastery was also the birthplace of the 6 th Dalai Lama, and it remains one of the most important holy sites for Tibetan Buddhists.

Sela Pass is a mountain pass that connects Tawang with parts of India, and it’s one of the highest altitude driveable mountain passes in the world. Traversing it is an incredible experience that you should definitely have while you are in Tawang. This is a sacred area for Buddhists as they believe that there are 101 sacred lakes in the area around the Sela Pass.

The mountain pass is usually open year-round, but it can sometimes be blocked because of landslides. This can happen in the winter or monsoon season, and you should be fine if you’re visiting Tawang in the summer.

Sela Pass is one of the most visited attractions in Arunachal Pradesh and it’s easy to reach from Tawang via route 13. Visit the Sela Lake on the north side of the Pass for some truly spectacular landscape views.

Nuranang Waterfalls

Nuranang Waterfalls are another popular tourist attraction in the area. They are around 100 meters high, and they’re without a doubt some of the most spectacular waterfalls in this part of the world.

The area with waterfalls is some 2 kilometers away from the Town of Jang, which lies on the road that connects Tawang and Bomdila. In total, the waterfalls are about 40 kilometers outside Tawang, so it is a bit of an adventure to reach them.

You can reach the waterfall area by bus or by car if you’re okay driving. It’s without a doubt worth it to go through the hassle of getting to the Nuranang Waterfalls – the place is so beautiful you’ll be in awe. It’s also important for the region thanks to the small hydel at the base that generates electricity for the locals!

Gorichen Peak

Gorichen Peak is a must-visit for avid hikers. It is the tallest peak in Arunachal Pradesh at 6858 meters, and it’s about 165 kilometers outside of Tawang town. It’s not exactly easy to reach but it’s definitely worth it for trekkers and climbers. Hikers should head to Chokersam base camp for some magical views of Gorichen Peak, while only the most experienced climbers should attempt to climb this summit.

Gorichen peak is icy and rocky, and the trail to it is not that different. It poses a challenge even to seasoned climbers, and despite this, it manages to be one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region.

You might also get a glimpse of the Monpa tribe. They inhabit the villages in the area, and for them, Gorichen peak is a sacred site that protects locals from all evil.

Taktsang Gompa

Taktsang Gompa (Tiger’s Den) is situated on a hilltop cliff, some 40 kilometers outside Tawang. It’s one of the most beautiful religious places in the area, and it’s incredibly peaceful there. Also, it’s pretty cold here since Tiger’s Den is on a rather high altitude, so you’ll want to bring some warm clothes.

It’s worth noting that summer is the best season to visit this spectacular attraction. It’s possible to reach it in the monsoon season, but not really in the winter. The road is often inaccessible in the winter, plus it gets very cold in the winter. Taktsang Gompa is encircled by a thick forest and it offers some of the best views you’ll get in the entire Tawang region so don’t forget your camera!

Tawang Itinerary – Places To Visit In Tawang

Tawang is a veritable smorgasbord of incredible experiences that straddle dimensions ranging from spirituality, nature, adventure, and much more. Whether you plan for a Tawang tour of 3 days, 4 days , or more, the things to do in Tawang and the places to see in Tawang and the vicinity will keep you busy. In a nutshell, Tawang is in many ways a traveller’s paradise.

Tawang Itinerary – About Tawang Valley | Tawang History

It is imperative to understand briefly the history of Tawang India and the legends associated with it before delving into the attractions and experiences that await you there. The origins of Tawang city date back to medieval times and are lost in the grey corridors of time.

Tawang is synonymous with the monastery that stands as its best-known icon and the history of both are inextricably linked.

Legend has it that, sometime in the latter half of the 17th century (1680-81), Merak LamaLodre Gyatso arrived from Lhasa on the instructions of the 5th Dalai Lama . His mission was to build a Buddhist monastery in the land of the Monpas . The land of the Monpa tribe stretched across what are now the districts of Tawang and West Kameng.

Merak Lama sat in deep meditation, hoping for divine guidance about where the monastery should come up. When he emerged from his meditation, he found his horse missing. He went in search of his horse and found it grazing on a beautiful and verdant hill that looked over the valley.

He found the place, perfect for a monastery, and taking this incident as a divine instruction, he decided to build the monastery there.

In the year 1680-81, the Tawang Monastery came up , it shone like a pearl, perched on a high cliff, caressed by clouds, a truly mystical place, and the perfect abode of the spirit of Buddhism. The monastery was known as Gaden Namgyal Lhatse, which in Tibetan means, “the complete paradise of divine victory .

“ The town that came up around the monastery came to be known as Tawang , which literally translates in Tibetan as “ chosen by the horse .”

Tawang has had a chequered political history. It was under the Tibetan administration till 1950, when Tibet lost its autonomy, and became a part of the Peoples’ Republic of China. Tawang thus came under the control of the Chinese. It was in the year 1951, that India finally took control of Tawang.

However, the 1962 war with China saw Tawang fall to the Chinese forces and was in their control for a brief period before the ceasefire and withdrawal of the Chinese army. In spite of this somewhat chaotic history, Tawang is enveloped in an aura of calm and serenity and exudes a mystical charm.

Tawang Tour 4 Days | Tawang Itinerary | Places To Visit In Tawang | Detailed Tawang Tour Itinerary | Things To Do In Tawang

Ideally, you would start your visit to Tawang from Guwahati if you are flying into Guwahati Airport as we did. In a typical itinerary, you would spend a couple of days in Bomdila and Dirang en route to Tawang from Guwahati. We spent a couple of days each in Bomdila and Dirang before proceeding to Tawang, via Sela Pass and the Jaswant Singh War Memorial.

Tawang Itinerary – Day One

On Day one of your Tawang Itinerary , you would arrive in Tawang around the evening and relax after a long drive from Bomdila/Dirang. However, it makes sense to visit one of the attractions near Tawang on your way to Tawang City, which is the spectacular Nuranang Falls. Also on the way to Tawang from Dirang, you pass through two notable landmarks, which you should stop and visit.

Sela Pass – Gateway To Tawang

The Sela Pass is known as the gateway to Tawang as it is a mountain pass that connects Tawang with West Kameng District. Sela Pass is located at an altitude of 13,700 feet . An ornate and beautiful gate, welcomes you to Tawang, at the Sela Pass.

The beautiful Sela Lake is also located by the side of the road in Sela Pass. You can stop for some time for the amazing views on a clear day and also climb up to the Buddha statue accessed by steps near the Sela Pass post.

The statue of Buddha Shakyamuni in many ways blesses travellers crossing the Sela Pass. One can also see the statues of the protector deities Palden Lhamo and Nechung and Guru Padmasambhava along with some Thangka paintings. The site has been blessed by the 14th Dalai Lama, and has been built and maintained by the Monpas of Tawang.

Distance from Tawang : 73 kilometres. Tip : Please be aware of the low oxygen level at Sela Pass.

Jaswant Garh War Memorial – Requiem For A Rifleman

The Jaswantgarh War Memorial is a monument erected in memory of Rifleman Jaswant Singh who laid down his life during the battle of Nurananag in the 1962 Indo-China war .

The memorial is built over what remains of a tree under which Jaswant Singh breathed his last after being hit by enemy bullets.

Do stop at this place that has been sanctified by the blood of Indian soldiers and pay homage to the martyrs. The Jaswantgarh War Memorial is located at an altitude of about 10,000 feet.

Distance from Tawang : 53 kilometres. Tip : Do get a feel of the bunkers that were used by the Indian soldiers during the 1962 war.

Nuranang Falls – Day 1 Of Your Tawang Itinerary

Feasting your eyes on the beauty of the  Nuranang Falls is one of the most pleasurable things to do when you visit Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh . Any itinerary for Tawang would be incomplete without a visit to the Nuranang Falls. When we visited the falls in the month of September, the waterfall was in full flow and we experienced the spectacular grandeur of the falls in all its majesty.

The waters of the Nuranang river plummet down with great velocity from a height of about 100 metres, creating a misty spray of great proportions. According to a local myth, the Nuranang falls is named after a local girl of the Monpa tribe named Nura, who is believed to have helped Rifleman Jaswant Singh of the Indian Army during the Indo-China war of 1962.

The Nuranang falls are located near the town of Jang, about 30 kilometres from Tawang, near the Bomdila-Tawang Road.

Distance from Tawang : 30 kilometres. Tip – If you don’t want to get wet, carry a raincoat or waterproof poncho and wear appropriate footwear.

Tawang Itinerary – Day Two

Tawang Monastery – Bask in Serenity

Without a doubt, the Tawang Monastery is one of the top Sights in Tawang . It is the prime reason that fuels Tawang tourism and no Tawang travel itinerary will be complete without a visit to the Tawang Monastery .

The Tawang Monastery dates back to the late 17th century and is the second-largest Buddhist Monastery in Asia . It is also known as Gaden Namgyal Lhatse . The monastery commands a beautiful view of the valley stretching out below and is a very important place in the Buddhist circuit. It was built by Merak Lama under the guidance of the 5th Dalai Lama.

The fortified complex of the Tawang Monastery is surrounded by a huge wall and contains the main temple and prayer hall, the library, the room for lighting butter lamps, the residential quarters of the monks, a school, and a museum.

Distance from Tawang : 1.5 kilometres. Tip – Pay a visit to the monastery early in the morning around 6.00 AM to watch the morning session for young monks. It is a very beautiful experience.

Thukje Chueling Nunnery – Ani Gompa ( Nunnery)

This Ani Gompa is a nunnery where female Buddhist monks stay. It comes under the purview of the Tawang Monastery. It is located in picturesque surroundings and the campus consists of the main temple and hall, butter lamp room, and living quarters of the monks.

The main sanctum has beautiful statues of Taradevi, Buddha, Je Tsongkhapa the founder of the Gelugpa sect, and Avalokiteshvara, among others.

About 45 nuns stay at this nunnery which belongs to the Gelugpa sect. This is one of 3 nunneries in Tawang, and is located in the midst of lush green hills and commands a breathtaking view of the valley. The nuns treat visitors to cups of steaming hot butter tea in a room that serves as a reception room for visitors.

Distance from Tawang : 6 kilometres. Tip : Do not miss a very old and rare Thungka Painting from Tibet.

Buddha Statue – Dominating Tawang’s Skyline

A giant statue of a sitting Buddha looks out serenely over Tawang. Below the statue is a small Buddhist Gompa. The area near the Buddha statue is a nice place with nice views of the valley in the vicinity. The Giant Buddha Statue is visible from anywhere in Tawang because of its size and strategic location.

Distance from Tawang : 2.9 kilometres. Tip : Make the most of a photo opportunity near the Buddha statue.

Tawang View Point – A Vantage Point To Appreciate Tawang’s Beauty

Near the Giant Buddha statue is the Tawang View Point , where you can spend some quiet moments sitting on a bench looking out at the valley that stretches out below. A huge signboard, that says, “I Love Tawang,” is a perfect backdrop for a nice selfie or two.

The depiction of Buddha’s first sermon in Sarnath can be seen near the viewpoint as well as the statue of an emaciated Buddha deep in meditation after practising arduous austerities for 6 years grabs your attention.

Distance from Tawang : 2.9 kilometres. Tip : Do not miss the 104 feet tall Indian National Flag fluttering here, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Shri Pema Khandu on the 3rd of February, 2022.

Tawang War Memorial – Remembering Our Brave Soldiers

The Chinese had captured Tawang and advanced beyond Bomdila and towards the borders of Assam in the 1962 war. The Tawang War Memorial is a tribute in stone to the bravery of the gallant Indian soldiers who sacrificed themselves, to defend the country. A Stupa stands as an eternal ode to the brave martyrs. The names of the martyrs are also etched here for posterity.

Distance from Tawang : 1 kilometre. Tip : Do watch the laser show in the evening that recounts the saga of the Indo-China war of 1962 and the bravery of our soldiers.

Tawang Itinerary – Day Three

On Day 3 of your Tawand itinerary , plan to visit Bumla Pass on the Indo-China border and some high-altitude lakes on the way. By late afternoon you should be back from Bumla Pass, leaving you enough time for some shopping and sightseeing within Tawang city.

It is advisable to have an early breakfast and leave for Bumla Pass. Please note that you would require a special permit from the Army administration to travel to Bumla Pass. The same would be arranged by your tour operator or the driver of the vehicle that you hire to travel to Bumla Pass.

Bumla Pass – Ringside View Of The China Border

One of the best places to visit in Tawang is Bumla Pass . The journey to Bumla Pass itself is incredible as you travel across bewitching landscapes. You encounter a host of high-altitude lakes on your journey.

Bumla Pass is located at an altitude of 15,200 feet and is generally enveloped in fog or snow. It was the theatre of a fierce battle between Indian and Chinese forces during the 1962 Indo-China war.

At Bumla Pass, you are taken on a guided walk to the border outpost, by the army personnel and escorted back. You can see the Chinese side of the border and also listen to the story of the battle of Bumla here.

There is a canteen run by the Army where you can have light snacks and tea or coffee. You can also buy items like jackets, boots, caps, and hats here at pretty reasonable prices.

Distance from Tawang : 53 kilometres. Tip : At 15,200 feet Bumla Pass can be very cold, please carry your woollens. If you are susceptible to AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) , take the necessary precautions.

Joginder Singh War Memorial – Remembering A Brave Soldier

A few kilometres before Bumla Pass, by the side of the road stands the Sub Joginder Singh PVC Memorial . It is built in memory of the valiant Subedar who lead a small platoon of the Sikh Regiment at Bumla Pass to stop the Chinese Forces during the 1962 Indo-China war.

Subedar Joginder Singh was the JCO who commanded a platoon of around 20 soldiers at Bumla Pass when they were attacked by the Chinese. They were hopelessly outnumbered but fought valiantly till the last man. Subedar Joginder Singh fought and killed more than 50 soldiers single-handedly before being fatally injured.

He was captured and died in Chinese captivity. His ashes were later repatriated to his unit and he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.

Distance from Tawang : 50 kilometres. Tip : Stop to pay your respects to the memory of the valiant soldier on the way to Bumla Pass.

Shungatser Lake – Madhuri Lake

As you drive towards Shungatser Lake , you get the feeling of travelling to another world, a world whose beauty defies imagination. Clouds caress mountain peaks, coniferous trees wave in the wind, and intriguingly shaped water bodies gleam bewitchingly.

The Shungatser Lake also spelt variously as Sangestar Lake or Sungatser Lake , is more popularly known as Madhuri Lake . The lake lies in the shadow of two huge hills that seem perpetually hugged by clouds. The lake presents a scene straight out of a film or a surreal dream.

No wonder that the lake formed the backdrop for a song sequence of the Bollywood film Koyla, featuring the famous Indian actress, Madhuri Dixit.

Shungatser Lake is perched at an altitude of 12,165 feet and is one of the best places to see in Tawang . The Lake is maintained by the Indian Army.

Distance from Tawang : 37 kilometres. Tip : You can have your lunch at the canteen here which is run by the army and offers food at a very reasonable rate.

Pang Teng Tso Lake – PT Tso Lake

The Pang Teng Tso Lake also known as PT Tso Lake is the closest to Tawang and you come across it about 17 kilometres from Tawang City. It is a beautiful lake that shimmers in the shade of lush trees. In the background, you can see snow-clad peaks that lend an ethereal aura to the lake.

It is a great place to spend some serene moments lost in the beauty of nature. You can truly enjoy the environs of PT Tso lake if the weather is clear, otherwise, it is likely to be veiled with a thick layer of mist.

Distance from Tawang : 17 kilometres. Tip : Stop to experience the vibes of the lake, even if the weather is not clear, it is by the side of the road leading to Bumla pass.

Tawang Market – Shopping In Tawang

A visit to the local markets in any town or city brings you close to the local vibes and provides a more immersive experience. This is true of Tawang as with any other city. If you are looking for local shopping experiences, then Tawang has not one but three markets, where you can indulge your impulses and shop till you drop.

The three markets of Tawang are Old Market, New Market, and Nehru Market . Of these, the most popular market is the Old Market which has shops selling everything from handicrafts and curios to groceries and vegetables.

If you are thinking of what to buy in Tawang, it is a good idea to shop for handicrafts including Thangka paintings, wooden carved show pieces, shawls, Buddhist symbols, and flags .

Tawang Craft Centre And Emporium

The Tawang Craft Centre is an endeavour of The Department of Textile and Handicrafts, Government of Arunachal Pradesh , to encourage and promote the rich heritage of arts and crafts of the Monpa people. Here you can see the making of various items of woodcraft including tables, wooden utensils, and other exquisitely carved wooden items.

You can also see how the beautiful carpets, colourful bags, and traditional dresses of the Monpas, take shape at the hands of the expert weavers. You will find here Thangkas (Cloth Paintings), masks, footwear, pottery, and headgear including the traditional Monpa hats that are made of Yak’s felt.

You can buy all the different traditional handicrafts that are made at the Craft centre of Tawang at the Government-run Sales Emporium. Here you can buy authentic local handicrafts at reasonable prices.

It is older than the Tawang monastery and is believed to have been built around 1487 by Ugyen Zangpa. In those times it is believed to have been the biggest Buddhist school in the area .

The Urgelling monastery is located in the village in which Tashi Tenzin father of the 6th Dalai Lama lived, and today the monastery is dedicated to Tsanyang Gyatso, H.H. the 6th Dalai Lama.

The Urgelling monastery has a magical charm with its walls painted white and yellow. There are rare thangkas (cloth paintings) in the monastery.

Distance from Tawang : 5 kilometres. Tip : Lookout for the rare Thangkas (cloth paintings) of all the Dalai Lamas (1 to 14) and those of the 6th Dalai Lama’s parents at the Urgelling Monastery.

Khinmey Monastery

The Khinmey Monastery belongs to the Nyingma sect of Buddhism and is located in a village of the same name. It is also known as Sang-ngag-choekhorling. The monastery was established in the year 1440 AD by Rev. Kundun Sange Yeshe. The beautiful monastery overlooks the valley below and is a serene place to visit.

Distance from Tawang : 8 kilometres. Tip : Look out for the hundreds of colourful and vibrant murals inside the main prayer hall.

Kushanang – Maternal Village of the 6th Dalai Lama

Deep in the countryside is the picturesque village of Kushanang . The village nestles in the midst of lush green vegetation and beautiful fields. Located here is the home of the mother of the 6th Dalai Lama . The ancient house still exists and descendants of the 6th Dalai Lama still live in the old house.

The village is a bridge to ancient history that goes back a few centuries and lies in relative obscurity. It is definitely one of the offbeat places to visit in Tawang.

Shernup Village – Tawang’s Valley Of Flowers

Chagzam Bridge – An Ancient Wonder

The Chagzam Bridge is an ancient bridge believed to have been built in the early part of the 15th century by Tangton Gyalpo who was a disciple of the first Dalai Lama. He was a renowned architect and he was known for building iron chain bridges and is believed to have built over 100 iron chain bridges.

The Chaksam Bridge is an iron chain bridge built over the Tawang-Chu river . The bridge is still functional and one can take a walk on the swaying bridge, above the swirling waters of the river.

Distance from Tawang : 25 kilometres. Tip : Getting to the bridge will involve a little bit of walking, there are steps that lead down to the bridge.

Tawang’s 9 Best Kept Secrets | More than Tawang Monastery

Are you thinking about visiting Tawang Arunachal Pradesh? Most likely you want to go because of the rich Tibetan culture and the famous Tawang Monastery, which are great reasons to go! They are the reasons I was excited, and I was happy to see there was so much more than just a monastery to visit in Tawang India.

Tawang tourism isn’t huge although it is one of the most popular places to visit in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and Tawang Monastery is one of the most historical places in India to visit , making the journey up to the far NE India well worth your time.

So first, the basics for visiting Tawang:

• Where is Tawang?  Let me just share the map here but it’s the NW part of Arunachal Pradesh and while you’re here you are only 30-40 km from both Bhutan and China.

• When should I go to Tawang?  It’s actually one of the best places to visit in India in December since December is the peak season of tourism and other places like the Taj will be crowded. The season here is Nov-March
• How’s the Tawang weather?  The reason people come in the cold months of Nov-March is because the other months have monsoon rain. It is COLD. You have to plan ahead and pack properly! It was -2 celsius for us at night in November.
• What about Tawang Hotels, are there any?  There are hotels in Tawang but not many. Arunachal Pradesh tourism in general is still growing. The infrastructure isn’t great (roads are bad, hotels are few). We stayed at Tenzin Guesthouse   which isn’t even on Tripadvisor but our guide says is the best guesthouse in town. The other top two options are: Hotel Zax Star and Hotel Gakyi Khang Zhang

Tawang’s Best Kept Secrets | What to do in Tawang

1. tawang monastery..

The most obvious of things to visit is this famous monastery. It’s the second largest in the world, after the Lhasa one in Tibet which is not longer in use due to Chinese laws. That makes Tawang Monastery the largest  active monastery in the world.

2. Craft Center and Emporium.

I love finding crafts and seeing how they are made everywhere that I travel. I wrote about the artisans I found in Mysore which people seemed to really like reading about so I’m going to write a whole article about the crafts in Tawang and combine that with what I saw in Ziro Valley, another area of Arunachal Pradesh. They make many types of hats, bags, paintings, hand-woven fabrics, and woven baskets, as well as knitting all kinds of things.

3. Indo-Chinese War Memorial.

A memorial for the war of 1962 where 4,220 Indians died fighting the Chinese for Indian territory.

4. Tawang Town Center.

One of our favorite things to see where the soldiers holding hands and guns. It’s normal for men in India to hold hands as a sign of friendship and gave us a laugh to see them in military get up holding guns while walking hand in hand through town. As usual the cows tried to get involved in the veg market while the women shooed them away before they could steal anything.

5. Tsun Gon Thog Jee Choeling Nunnery.

We were greeted by the adorable Sonam who offered us tea immediately. Going into her room and sitting by the fire we met two other girls who were traveling the area. It was the warmest we had been since arriving in Tawang the day before, sitting by the fire inside. The nuns were having a lively debate outside and would clap when it was someone else’s turn to talk. I never knew there were “female monks” in Tibetan Buddhism so found all of this so intriguing.

6. Ugyenling Monastery.

Also called the 6th Dalai Lama monastery because he was born here. This is an older monastery (1487) that isn’t as visited and is often neglected by tourists who come to only see the Tawang Monastery. The 6th Dalai Lama planted a tree which you’ll see on the right of the entrance. People believe if you steep the leaves like tea, and drink, you can cure illnesses. It was ransacked in the 1700’s and now is a simple and small monastery.

7. Thegtse Sang-ngag Choekhorling Monastery.

Th is the monastery of the Mon-yul kid-mo jong which means the “sacred land of happiness” located in a village in Tawang called Khin-mey, which comes from a Monpa (tribal) word Khi-ket Nyan-mey which means “place for listening to the dogs bark”. Legend has it, the villagers used to hunt and you would hear their hunting dogs from here, until a guru came and taught them Buddhism and not to kill.

This monastery is unique in that it is part of a different sect of Buddhism called Nyingma with a guru  Nansid Zilnon where the monks can have long hair and can marry. It was the most colorful one we saw!

8. Crossing Sela Pass to get there.

Not actually in Tawang, but worth mentioning because this pass is quite famous in India and you have to pass by to get to Tawang. Getting to Tawang in itself is an adventure which I will write about !

9. Tawang cable car.

Brand new attraction in Tawang. I didn’t go across myself because it was on the other side. It’s a half hour ride, so we would have had to wait half and hour for it, taken it half an hour, then half an hour back… and we had too much to see! If you have the time though, the views look stunning.

my girlfriend and I are enjoying these posts a lot. We are planning a 3 month india trip in December 2016. However, a lot of information online really seems to scare us regarding traveling in India. We are trying to focus our itinerary on North East India. However, seems like Arunachal Pradesh is out of the question without a guide. Are the other states of North East India more accessible for tourists? we might backpack the other states and then get a guide for Arunachal Pradesh

Hi Roy, I don’t think it’s any more difficult in Arunachal than anywhere else. I would say Arunachal and Nagaland are the most common to travel, and both would be best with guides. Check out my article that talks about the safety of each state “faq of northeast india”

More than 65 residential complexes ensure the functioning of the many monasteries, administration, and home to more than 400 Buddhist monks of different ages.

Tawang War Memorial is built to resemble a stupa, which you can reach by climbing a few steps. The prayer flags adorn the sky as you walk past the listings of the names of over 2500 Indian soldiers that gave their lives in the war.

The fantastic views of the mountains and the artefacts that remind you of the past will make you emotional for sure. 

It houses a spectacularly built stupa engraved with the names of all the soldiers who died a brave death during the war. The stupa and the artefacts preserved from the war is sure to give you goosebumps and is one of the most important places to visit in Tawang.

This site is dedicated to the rifleman Jaswant Singh, killed during the Indo-China War in 1962. A temple-like structure is built as a memorial, where you can also notice the names of the other martyrs that have lost their lives. It is worth stopping by to pay your tributes to these brave soldiers.

Enjoy the Peace At Taktsang Gompa

If you want to go to monasteries hopping in Tawang, one of the must-do attractions in Tawang you should check out is the lovely Taktsang Gompa.

This elegant monastery, located atop a hill at an altitude of over 13,000 feet, is blessed with surrounding lush valleys and majestic pine-forested mountains forming their backdrops.

If you are lucky, you might experience the clouds and the mist floating over your head as you admire the stunning views of the landscapes from the edge of a mountain at Taktsang Gompa.

This well-kept Buddhist monastery was honoured by Guru Padmasambhava’s visit during the 8th century. Meditate in one of the monastery’s halls, feel the breeze and take in the views on your visit to this beautiful Gompa, one of the best things to do in Tawang.

If you love shopping, one of the fun things to do in Tawang is visiting the Tibetian Settlement Market, one of the best places to buy local products. 

Also known as the Vihara market, you can find a wide range of products in this local market in the small shops, including handicrafts, handmade products like jute bags, wooden toys, woollen items, artworks, and more, a perfect place to shop for souvenirs to take back home, mainly traditional Buddhist items like prayer wheels, paintings, and statues of Buddha.

The Tibetan market is also a place to try the various street food of Tawang, as there are many cute cafes and local restaurants where you can try delicious momos, Thupka, and soups.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN TAWANG – ADVENTURE & NATURE

Admire the beauty of the sela pass.

One of the adventurous things to do in Tawang happens on your way to the town and out of it, the rugged Sela Pass at an elevation of almost 14,000 feet. It is the only road that connects Tawang and other towns around with the rest of the country.

Considered one of the highest high-altitude motorable passes globally, the journey along the Pass is packed with adventure. Thanks to the immense difficulty in making a road here, the winding roads are only made of gravel, filled with mud and can become dangerously slippery around monsoon and the winter season when it gets filled with snow. 

Apart from watching out for altitude sickness, driving through the Pass is another adventure you will love.

The Buddhists regard the areas around the Pass to be very auspicious, with the legend being the Pass home to over a hundred glacial lakes. 

Whether this is true or not, you can surely enjoy the gorgeous Sela Lake, which is one of the famous spots on the way to Tawang. Stop by this lake blanketed by snow during the winter or during the spring and summer when flowers decorate the areas around, and layers of mist envelope the lake’s surface, making it appear surreal.

Witness The Gorgeous Nuranang Waterfalls

One of the unusual places to visit in Tawang is near Zemithang town, the beautiful Nuranang Waterfalls. Also called Jang Falls or Bong Bong Falls, or the native name Bap Ten Kang , witnessing the beauty of these spectacular waterfalls plummeting from 100 meters high at over 6000 feet amidst the beautiful mountains is one of the best things to do in Tawang for nature lovers.

Did you know? A part of the Nuranang river, which originates at Sela Pass, drops off the peaks here, surrounded by the deep forests. If you time it right, you can walk to the base of the waterfalls and even walk behind swim, and relax in the vast pool below, thanks to its crystal clear waters.

It is located around just 40 km from Tawang town, so you can stop on your way to Bomdilla or Zemithang, or better, plan a day trip to Nuranang waterfalls from Tawang. Also, visit the hydel power plant beside the falls, which generates electricity for the nearby areas.

Admire the beauty of Madhuri Lake or the Shonga-Tser Lake

One of the top Tawang attractions is the pretty Shonga-Tser Lake, located within 30 minutes drive from the town. It is one of the top things to do in Tawang for tourists, and it is no surprise given the beauty of this location and its gorgeous secluded location.

Shonga-Tser, a high-altitude glacial lake at 12,000 ft above sea level, is known for its excellent location amidst the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas and lush valleys. The lake became popular, attaining the name Madhuri after the lead Bollywood actress of the movie Koyla that was shot here.

You can take a hike around the lake, witness the beautiful bloom and the panoramic views. The lake is only open from late April to late October during summer, monsoon, and the early winter. It is best to visit Madhuri Lake during the summer when the roads are easier to navigate, and the weather is excellent.

Admire the Beautiful Penga Teng Tso Lake

Located very close to the town is one of the fantastic places to visit in Tawang, Penga Teng Tso Lake. Also known as P.T. Tso Lake, this beautiful lake is surrounded by stunning mountains that will be decorated with rhododendron and other wildflowers if you visit during spring or early summer. 

The lake is one of the top things to do in Tawang in winter as it is frozen at that time, turning into a pretty skiing site. With the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas as the backdrop and amazing views available on every side, you will love your visit to the lake no matter when you go.

Explore the Beautiful Bumla Pass

Among the beautiful passes in Arunachal is Bumla Pass, located close to the Indo China border. Visiting this pass is one of the top things to do in Tawang for many reasons.

It is one of the remotest and furthest places in th state, accessed after you secure permits at the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Tawang District and Indian army cantonment of Tawang. The pass is believed to be the passage the Dalai Lama took to escape from Tibet to India.

The location of Bumla Pass, at over 15,200 feet, is stunning, offering fantastic views of the many snowy peaks of the forested mountains of the higher Himalayas, the lush valleys dotted with the river, waterfalls, and flora.

The best time to visit Bumla Pass is on clear days of the spring, summer or after monsoons, from May to October, when you can have clear roads and manageable weather with clear skies.

Hike to Gorichen Peak

If you want an adventurous trip, one of the top things to do in Tawang is to plan a hike to Gorichen Peak at a 25,000 feet altitude. 

It is the highest mountain in Arunachal, the third-highest Himalayan mountain peak in North East India. It is located between the Tawang and West Kameng districts of Arunachal Pradesh. You can get beautiful glimpses of Gorichen Peak on the way from Bomdila to Tawang.

Known as Sa-Nga Phu in the native language, the Kingdom of Deity, the mountain is a sacred peak for the Monpa tribe, who regard it as the protector of all evils.

Climbing this magnificent mountain is a challenge sought after by adventure seekers and mountain climbers. The trail offers splendid views of the valleys, with the peak providing a platform to soak in a 360-degree view of the top from above. 

Given the rugged terrain and the high altitude, this trek is not for beginners, though. This challenging trek is for you if you are a seasoned and fit hiker willing to hike the trail for over a week in one of the most difficult terrains in Arunachal. 

Most trekkers attempt the peak at the onset of spring and in the summer when the weather is at its best.

Enjoy Rafting in Kameng River

One of the adventurous things to do in Tawang is rafting in the Kameng River, one of the beautiful rivers in Arunachal. You can book your rafting tours after you arrive in Tawang. The best time for rafting is the summer months, from April to July. You do not need any prior rafting experience as well.

Depending on the activities and your preferences, you can book group rafting tours that involve pick up and drop or add hikes to the nearby spots and visiting attractions to the tour.

Try Mountain Biking

Thanks to its mountainous terrain, the areas around Tawang offer some of the most challenging tracks for mountain bikers. It gets better if you are a seasoned cyclist, but you can still try mountain biking in Tawang, even a beginner. 

From peaceful monasteries to gorgeous viewpoints on the mountain tops, you can choose from the many broad trails of different difficulties. If you are in Tawang in the summer, do not miss signing up for bike tours, which is one of the fun things to do here. 

OFFBEAT THINGS TO DO IN TAWANG

Check out nagula lake.

Another high altitude lake worth adding to your list of the fantastic things to do in Tawang is the pretty Nagula Lake located not far away from the town.

Its splendid location and the beautiful panoramic views are good reasons to visit this fantastic lake. Nagula Lake is also located close to the Indo China border, and you need permits if you plan to venture further around the lake.

The best time to visit Nagula is during the summer season when the weather is pleasant, and you can spot many rare species of birds. 

Right after the monsoon is also a fabulous time as the lake will be at its maximum capacity, and the surrounding mountains and the valleys look lush with the fresh bed of forests after the monsoons.

Attend Tawang Festival

If you plan your trip right, you can attend one of the  fantastic festivals of Arunachal  – The  Tawang Festival . One of the latest inclusions to the list of celebrations, this festival hosted by the tourism organization of Arunachal is the best event that combines cultural immersion with plenty of fun things to do and local activities.

At this festival, you can witness the unique culture of some of the tribes, their traditional dance performances, take part in the native games, and taste a wide range of exquisite local delicacies of many tribes, including the local liquor. 

This 3-days festival is the perfect opportunity to explore the best of Tawang and be introduced to the unique heritage and culture of the state.

Head to Gyangong Ani Gompa

One of the lovely offbeat things to do in Tawang is visiting the nunnery Gyangong Ani Gompa. This monastery was established by Merag Lama, the founder of the main Tawang Monastery, for his sister. It is home to over fifty nuns and a pretty temple worth stopping by.

You have two options to reach Gyangong Ani – you can take a cable car from Tawang Monastery or do a small hike to reach the monastery, which starts at the north of Tawang Gompa.

If you are wondering where to stay in Tawang, I am biased to the homestays for many reasons. Although you can find plenty of hotels in Tawang in all budget ranges, experiencing a homestay in Tawang is one of the top things.

While you can easily spend a weekend or three days in Tawang(or more), you can certainly get more of Arunachal’s beauty by exploring the many tiny hamlets nestling amidst the mountains.

Plan Trips to Hot Springs

Not many know many beautiful thermal baths or hot springs located in remote Arunachal villages surrounded by stunning valleys dotted with mountains. These hot water springs are known for their medicinal value because of their high sulphur content. 

If you are looking for some adventure in secluded locations, planning a trip to any of these hot springs is a fun idea.

Thingbu Hot Spring  – Thingbu is one of the remote villages in Arunachal accessed by a drive of about 4 hours from Tawang. Although you cannot plan a day trip, you can stay a few days to experience the beauty of this village, especially its fantastic location. 

The village is home to Thingbu hot springs in the Mago Chu River. You can also plan a hike from Jang village or drive from Jang to reach this pretty hot spring which is an excellent attraction to relax in the winters.

Hot Springs in Mago  – Another remote village is Mago, home to many hot springs nestling amidst the mountains. You can spend overnight in the village and check out some of them along the local river.

HOW TO REACH TAWANG

Due to its remote location, you will need at least a day or two to reach and another two to return even if you opt for the fastest means of transport. Ensure you take this into account while planning your Tawang itinerary.

The fastest means of arriving at Tawang is by taking a flight. The nearest airport to Tawang is Tezpur Airport, also known as  Salonibari Airport , located in the neighbouring Assam state. It is about 390km from Tawang.

There are regular flights from many major Indian cities to Tezpur Airport. Once you reach there, you can book a cab to Tawang, which will take 6 to 7 hours or more depending on the weather conditions.

You can book a flight to the nearest  Kolkata International Airport  or the international airport of Guwahati, also known as The Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport if you are flying to India from abroad. From either of the airports, you can choose between cabs and buses.

The longest means to reach Tawang is choosing to arrive by roadways. The nearest city to start your journey by road is arriving at Guwahati or, better, Tezpur.

You can get a shared Tata Sumo or Mahindra Bolero from either of these cities or book a private taxi. The upside to the road trip to Tawang is all the fantastic landscapes you will pass by.

The nearest railway station to Tawang is Rangapara Railway Station in Thakurbari, Assam, about 383 kilometres. But only a few trains run to this station, mainly from  Delhi  to Rangapara. 

From this train station, you have to book a private cab which will take around 11 hours to arrive at Tawang.

WHERE TO STAY IN TAWANG

It is not difficult to find  Tawang hotels   in all budget ranges, whether traveling alone or with your family. 

If you are looking for hotels, check out  Yul Pemakhar , which is 1km from the centre, and close to the main monastery. 

Hotel Jhaktsang  is an excellent hotel for families or couples looking for rooms with spacious balconies, views, and a better ambience. They also offer to pick up and drop services at an additional cost.

Hotel Taktsang  is also an excellent hotel for couples and people traveling with kids.

If you are looking for homes and apartments, check out  Vamoose North Hill , known for its excellent location and valley views. 

If you want to stay close to the centre,  Vamoose Dolma , located close to the old market, is the best choice.

Here are some tips and things to know before planning your Tawang trip.

Tawang and other places in Arunachal have minimal access. Along with that, the weather and the seasons heavily influence the road conditions. So avoid peak monsoons and winter days when roads are blocked due to landslides and snowfall.

Also, Tawang is a high altitude town, which means you might be prone to altitude sickness. It is best to be prepared(with medications and checkups) before you start your trip, especially if you have some pre-existing medical conditions or any elders who may have them.

Many underestimate the harsh weather, just like the high altitude conditions, which is not advisable. This is true, especially if you are planning to travel to Tawang during the winter when the temperatures drop to negative all the time. 

So make sure to carry winter wear, including jackets, several layers of clothes, proper water-proof hiking shoes, gloves, and headgear.
