Home to some of the Caribbean's most incredible blue waters and an abundance of culture, it's no wonder this chain of islands is a tourist hotspot. While Grand Cayman, the largest of the three islands, is perhaps the best-known, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, the smaller two, offer a more laid-back experience. It's easy to travel between the three, but regardless of where you end up, there are a great number of unique experiences to be had on each island. Here are 15 of the best things to do in the Cayman Islands.

Swim with Stingrays in Stingray City

Stingray City is a famous group of sandbars located 25 miles out to sea from Grand Cayman. It is a popular tourist attraction where visitors can interact and swim with stingrays in shallow waters. Tours to Stingray City usually range between three to five hours. Stingray City offers a free shuttle service from the George Town Cruise Ship Port Terminal and Resorts on Seven Mile Beach.

Go Scuba Diving

The Cayman Islands is one of the top dive destinations in the Caribbean. It has shipwrecks, healthy coral reefs, diverse marine life, and great underwater visibility. There are 240 dive sites located around Grand Cayman, 65 located around Cayman Brac, and 60 located around Little Cayman. Weather conditions for diving are optimal year-round. However, the hurricane season is from June to November which can cause an increase in rainfall and turbid waters.

Starfish Point, located in North Side, Grand Cayman, is a stretch of coral-sand beach known for having red cushion sea stars, a species of starfish, on its shores. The beach is located on a spit, an extended stretch of beach that projects out to sea and is joined to the mainland on one side. This makes it an ideal place to snorkel as the waters have great visibility. Visitors can reach Starfish Point by land or sea, and there is a multitude of luxury charters that bring visitors to Starfish Point daily.

Located on West Bay on the northwest point of Grand Cayman, Macabuca is a waterfront tiki bar that specializes in fresh seafood and local ingredients. The sun sets on this side of the island, so it makes it the perfect place to watch the sunset over the Caribbean Sea while enjoying a meal.

Hire a Car for the Day

There is so much of Grand Cayman that visitors can explore on their own. The best way to do this is to hire a car as it allows for complete freedom to wander about the island. It gives visitors the chance to see the island from a local perspective as they can visit local hotspots that tours wouldn’t go to.

 A driving permit is required when renting a car, and these permits are issued at the George Town Police Station on Elgin Avenue. Rates are generally higher in the winter (from mid-December) as this is a peak season and lower in the summer (mid-April). Grand Cayman has several car rental companies with kiosks at the Grand Cayman Airport and various resorts along West Bay Road in George Town.

Visit the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park

This botanic park was first opened in 1994 to preserve the natural environment, including many rare plants and animals. The park contains a Woodland Trail, a Floral Colour Garden, a Cayman Heritage Garden, a Blue Iguana Habitat, a lake, and an orchid boardwalk exhibit. Many visitors flock to this park specifically to see the butterflies and the blue iguanas, as these species can only be found on the Cayman Islands.

Additionally, many visitors come specifically for the Annual Orchid Show, an exhibition of locally grown orchids at the end of March. Admission to the park is 10 Cayman Island dollars for self-guided tours and 15 Cayman Island dollars for guided tours.

Shop and Dine in Camana Bay

Located in the heart of Seven Mile Beach, Camana Bay is a waterfront town with many places to shop and numerous restaurants, bars, and cafés to dine in. More than 2,500 people visit this town daily, and it hosts more than 600 events annually. Visitors also venture to Camana Bay’s weekly farmers market to pick up fresh, local produce.

Spend Some Time in Hell

Hell Geological Site is a group of black limestone formations located in West Bay on Grand Cayman. This geological formation was formed by algae boring into the limestone to produce jagged pinnacles coated in a black substance. “Hell” got its name as locals believed this is what hell must look like. Tourists have visited Hell for decades to view the unique geology.

Hang Out on Seven Mile Beach

Seven Mile Beach is a long coral-sand beach located on the western side of Grand Cayman. The waters are known for their brilliant blue color and their clarity, making them world-renowned. It has an expansive waterfront home to many resorts, restaurants, beach bars, and luxurious properties.

The beach is completely open to the public, allowing visitors staying at other locations on the island to spend the entire day there if they wish. There are many different activities at Seven Mile Beach, such as parasailing, surfing, snorkeling, and scuba diving.

The Cayman Craft Market is a market that showcases local artisans' work, including art, crafts, jewelry, and clothing. Many of the items sold are made with local materials such as conch, coconuts, and caymanite . Local foods such as jams, spices, jellies, and snacks can also be purchased at the market. It is situated in downtown George Town, a five-minute walk from the cruise ship dock.

Make a Stop at the Blow Holes

Located on the eastern side of the islands, the Blow Holes are a great place to stop to see the seawater crash into openings in the rock, creating a blow hole effect. When the waves are large, the water can spray high out of the water, making for a great photo.

Boat to Little Cayman and Cayman Brac

Cayman has an abundance of boat operators that offer both private and group boat tours. Visitors can also charter a boat of their own for either one day or their entire stay. Boating is a great way to see the Cayman Islands, including the smaller Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, as they are only a short boat ride away from the mainland. Take one glance at this crescent-shaped shore and let your toes sink in the soft, coral sand and you'll easily understand why. Many of Grand Cayman's best resorts are situated on Seven Mile, and there are a number of casual beach bars and restaurants, a playground, restrooms and showers to boot. What's more, it's also a great spot to try snorkeling for the first time – the clear water allows snorkelers to see the vibrant fish and beautiful coral.

Located in the North Sound area of Grand Cayman about 25 miles from the shore, Stingray City is the most popular attraction on any of the three Cayman Islands. The "city" is actually a shallow (three to five feet) sandbar where you can interact with and feed the wild Atlantic stingrays that live freely in those waters (there are no penned enclosures). The area has been a popular gathering spot for these creatures for decades; the stingrays were initially attracted to the sandbars by fishermen, who would clean and discard the scraps from their daily catches in the calm waters. Today, the stingrays associate the sound of boat engines with food, making them comfortable with human contact.

The USS Kittiwake was an ex-U.S. Navy submarine that served for more than 50 years before it was sunk off the coast of popular Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman in 2011. An interesting tidbit about the ship's history is that it played a significant role in recovering the flight recorders from the Challenger space shuttle disaster in 1986. The submerged submarine and artificial reef now delight scuba divers with its swim throughs and sea life, including shrimp, eels, barracuda, turtles and grouper.  

Because Kittiwake is a popular snorkel and dive site, recent travelers highly recommend booking your tour reservation well in advance. Others say it's a great wreck dive for beginners and advanced divers, alike. The high visibility and shallow placement of the ship at around 12 to 60 feet deep make it accessible to all diving levels. It's a place where you can spend several hours swimming through the wreckage. It's equally fun for snorkelers, too, since the submerged submarine is easily visible from near the surface.

Once submerged under the sea millions of years ago, the Cayman Crystal Caves were shaped by water erosion, creating rooms filled with stalagmite and stalactite formations. Over time, dripping water caused mineral deposits, which eventually turned into crystals. It's believed that pirates like Blackbeard used these caves as hideouts hundreds of years ago. In addition to using the caves as a shelter during hurricanes, it's also believed that they stashed their treasure here.

Discussion to turn the caves into a tourist attraction began in the 1990s, and the caves finally opened to the public in 2016. Today, visitors can embark on a guided tour that lasts approximately 90 minutes, exploring three caves and learning about their formation and history.

What started in 2008 as a small distillery producing ocean-aged rum has become the 5,000-square-foot Cayman Spirits Co. Distillery. What's unique about the Cayman Islands' only distillery is the where they age their rum: on the ocean floor. In fact, it was the first distillery to do so. These days, in addition to producing its famous Seven Fathoms rum, the distillery also produces flavored rums, vodka and liqueurs.  

Recent visitors highly recommend taking a tour of the facility, stating that it's not a sales-y commercial presentation, but fun, informative and entertaining with the ability to sample outstanding small batches of rum and distilled spirits.

Spanning more than 65 acres on Grand Cayman's North Side, the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1994. However, instead of the display being in the sky, it's in the water in an area known as Bioluminescent Bay in Grand Cayman's North Side near Starfish Point. Also known as Bio Bay, this natural wonder showcases bioluminescence, a phenomenon caused by millions of single-celled plankton called dinoflagellates that emit light when disturbed in the water. The high concentration of these bioluminescent organisms is extremely rare, making the Bio Bay one of only a few places in the world where you can experience it.

Just south of  Seven Mile Beach  and less than 50 feet below the surface are Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto, two of the most popular diving spots on Grand Cayman that can be enjoyed by both beginner and intermediate divers and snorkelers. Both are known for their labyrinthine system of caves and tunnels where you can find tarpon, silversides, parrotfish and barracuda. A unique feature of Devil's Grotto are its shafts, where sunlight filters through gaps in the overhead rocks, creating ethereal scenery.

Recent cruisers appreciated the proximity of the diving center to the cruise ship terminal, making for a quick and easy shore excursion. Visitors also love the serene setting and the fact that the dive sites are also very close to each other and to the shore, and contain an impressive variety of marine life.

If you're a nature lover, you should add the Mastic Trail to your list of Grand Cayman must-dos. Established in 1992 to protect the largest contiguous area of old-growth forest in Grand Cayman, the 2.3-mile trail (one-way) is home to rare Mastic trees and winds through a native mangrove swamp surrounded by some of the island's most colorful and rare plant life.

If you decide to tackle the trail, you'll want to wear the appropriate footwear and insect repellant as the mosquitoes can be relentless. Because it's sheltered from the sea breeze, the trail can get quite hot and humid. If you're planning a trip, you'll have a more pleasant experience if you visit in the morning. Though you can hike the trail for free on your own, many past visitors said you'll get more out of the experience by hiring a guide, who can point out the unique wildlife, such as Cayman's native parrot, the West Indian woodpecker, and the Caribbean dove. If you time your visit for June, you'll likely spot the wild banana orchid – the national flower of the Cayman Islands – blooming along the trail.

There's more to Grand Cayman  than beautiful beaches, five-star resorts and financial services.

The largest of the three Cayman Islands , this Caribbean idyll sets the bar high when it comes to captivating cultural, culinary and natural attractions. Untamed hiking trails, handsome heritage sites and otherworldly marine encounters number among many memorable experiences in Grand Cayman.

Prepare to go beyond the magnificent yet mainstream Seven Mile Beach with these unmissable activities.

1. Stroll around pretty George Town

Cayman is a popular pit stop on Caribbean cruises, and the capital, George Town, is almost always the first sight passengers see. It is extremely photogenic, with wooden buildings in jewel colors lining the waterfront. They house a mishmash of venues, from duty-free stores selling perfume and diamonds to cool cafes serving up Buddha bowls, vegan brownies and almond milk lattes. You'll also spot the Cayman National Museum along the waterfront: it's worth popping in for a lesson on local history.

Planning tip:  Whether you're searching for things to do during a port of call or visiting the island independently, plan to spend an hour or two exploring this tiny city. 

2. Hike the Mastic Trail

This offbeat locale is the polar opposite – both geographically and figuratively – of the tidy capital. The Mastic Trail weaves its way through a protected mangrove forest on the island's east side, offering a taste of Cayman in its most natural state.

High humidity and a deluge of bugs make walking the 2.3-mile linear trail a reasonably non-touristy thing to do in Grand Cayman. If you're happy to slap on some insect repellent and pull on comfy shoes, you'll be greeted by an array of lush local flora and fauna. A lucky few might even get to glimpse the elusive (and endangered) blue iguana crashing through the undergrowth. 

3. Visit Cayman's oldest stone building 

A rare trace of Cayman Islands history,  Pedro St James is Grand Cayman's oldest stone structure. Its 18in-thick walls and imposing design have earned the structure the nickname "Pedro's Castle." 

The 18th-century plantation house sits beyond Spotts Bay and once served as the residence of the island's first governors. Nowadays, it's a fantastic heritage museum, complete with a traditional outdoor kitchen. As you tour all three stories, take note of the handsome mahogany interiors and the sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea from its multiple verandas.

Planning tip:  Pedro St James also hosts regular and one-off events. Check out the rum tasting or, if you're visiting in February, attend the annual Coco Fest .

4. Swim with the rays at Stingray City

Search for the best things to do in Grand Cayman, and this will probably come up as number one – with good reason. Stingray City refers to a sandbank in the island's North Sound that has become a gathering point for dozens of stingrays over the years. Supposedly, they began congregating decades ago when fishers used to gut their fish at that very spot.

Visit with a tour, and you'll find the guides can recognize many of the stingrays individually. The sandbank is less than 3ft deep, which makes it easy to hop into the water to see these majestic – and very friendly – creatures. 

5. Spend an afternoon at Camana Bay 

This modern dining, retail and entertainment complex is a popular hangout for both locals and expats, and it's handily accessible from Seven Mile Beach via a footbridge next to the Burger King. Camana Bay has some of the best clothes shopping in Grand Cayman, plus a selection of cafes.

Head to the waterfront area to cool off with luscious ice cream from Gelato & Co before ascending the steps of the Camana Bay Observation Tower. The wide stairwell is lined with a fantastical under-the-sea mosaic; the views from the top let you appreciate just how flat the island is.

6. Kayak in Bioluminescent Bay 

For a uniquely Grand Cayman experience, take a nighttime trip to Bioluminescent Bay. This small, secluded spot is not far from Rum Point yet only really accessible by water, thanks to the circle of houses along its shoreline.

Join a boat trip after dark to take to the water and experience thousands of tiny bioluminescent plankton sparkling all around you. Due to reports of jellyfish at certain times of the year, you might prefer a kayak tour such as those offered by Cayman Kayaks .

Planning tip:  The level of luminescence varies through the month; for the best display, go during a new moon.

7. Explore the Heritage Garden at Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park

Not far from the start of the Mastic Trail is the entrance to this less wild yet no less peaceful natural attraction. Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park is laid out in a series of themed gardens, including the charming Heritage Garden. A quaint wooden house sits at its heart, surrounded by various fruit and spice trees native to the region. Sometimes blue iguanas can be seen wandering through the flowerbeds; you'll also be able to spot them at the Blue Iguana Conservation center at the northern edge of the park.

8. Sip mudslides at Rum Point

While you might expect to sip rum cocktails at the evocatively named Rum Point, it's actually a vodka-based drink that's best associated with this laid-back cove. Essentially an alcoholic milkshake, the mudslide is the most popular order at the Rum Point Club ; the concoction was accidentally invented back in the '70s when a bartender substituted fresh cream for Baileys in a White Russian. Refreshing and filling with just a dash of cinnamon, a mudslide is a gift on a hot day.

9. Take a road trip to East End

You don't need a car if you're staying along Seven Mile Beach, though hiring one offers a way to experience the sleepy, non-touristy side of the island. During a leisurely day of driving, you can stop at various quirky sites along the way. 

The Blowholes, craggy limestone rocks just before East End, are great for photo ops. There's also Barefoot Beach (as blissful as it sounds) and the Cayman Parrot Sanctuary, fantastic for kids. Stop off for lunch at Tukka to dig into tasty Australian-Caribbean fusion dishes like lionfish tacos and lobster spring rolls. While you dine, turn your gaze seawards to spot the ragged masts of the Wreck of the 10 Sail  poking up through the waves.

10. Windsurf or ride through the shallows at Barkers National Park

Barkers National Park  sits less than a mile from Seven Mile Beach but feels a world away. The narrow stretch of wilderness on the western tip of Grand Cayman is flecked with mangrove forest and fringed by a long white-sand beach that's more likely to be occupied by seabirds than people.

Barkers is Grand Cayman's hot spot for wind sports, thanks to its consistent breezes. If windsurfing isn't your thing, there's another way to soak up the area's virgin beauty. Several riding stables sit along the road to the park, each offering treks along the sand. It's worth paying extra to ride bareback so your horse can swim in the warm ocean waters.

11. Dive through the wreck of the Kittiwake

Cayman has a phenomenal selection of dive sites, especially the dramatic Cayman Trench drop-off near Little Cayman. For an unforgettable underwater experience, take a scuba trip out to former submarine rescue vessel USS Kittiwake.  It was sunk off Grand Cayman's west coast in 2011 and now forms an artificial reef teeming with marine life.

Planning tip:  Dive outfits across the island offer PADI-certified courses and fun dives out to nearby sites.

12. Tread water alongside sea turtles at Spotts Beach

Nervous about diving? Pack a snorkel and mask instead and head to Spotts Beach to swim in the presence of sea turtles. Prime times for spotting them collecting seagrass from the ocean floor are first thing in the morning and in the hour before sunset when the sea cools down a bit. Remember to give turtles space and never attempt to touch them.

13. Eat Cayman classics in the Caribbean's culinary capital

Two major food festivals – Live Street Food Festival  and Taste of Cayman – and 200+ restaurants give Grand Cayman serious culinary credentials. There's somewhere to suit every craving, whether you want Michelin-star fine dining, hearty Italian cuisine, sensational seafood or plant-based delights.

Planning tips:  Get a taste of the Cayman Islands at places like Cimboco  and  Grape Tree Cafe . Chicken! Chicken! is the place to go for spicy jerk chicken, while Rackam's in George Town harbor serves delectable conch fritters, a specialty of the Cayman Islands.

14. Taste local rum and beer

Several rum distilleries in Grand Cayman welcome visitors for tasting sessions. Cayman Spirits Co  is a popular pick, thanks in part to its Seven Fathoms rum, stored in oak bourbon barrels and aged 42ft (or seven fathoms) below the ocean's surface. Beer more your thing? The Cayman Islands Brewery in Patricks Island offers beer tastings and has a shop where you can pick up crates to-go, plus various Caybrew memorabilia. 

15. Take an art tour of the island

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands is an inspiring starting point for an art-themed day out. Sandwiched between Seven Mile Beach and Camana Bay, the purpose-built complex is a treasure trove of mixed-media pieces and fine art. The top floor features permanent exhibitions by local artists, while the ground level hosts rotating shows. 

For art in three dimensions, look out all over the island for the giant sculptures of blue iguanas that form part of the Blue Dragon Trail, a National Trust art project featuring numerous sculptures by different local artists.

16. Watch a sunset from Cemetery Beach 

Sucker for a perfect sunset? Just along from Seven Mile Beach, one of the best spots is locally loved Cemetery Beach , named for the graveyard you have to walk through to access it. A prime west-facing position means you can sink yourself into the soft sand with a bottle of beer and watch the sun dip smoothly below the horizon.

17. Descend into the Crystal Caves

One of the newest additions to Grand Cayman's attractions is also one of the oldest natural features on the entire island. The so-called Crystal Caves in Old Man Bay were formed over 1000 years ago and house remarkable limestone rock formations. A small cluster of the 100+ caverns is currently safe for visitors. Book a guided walking tour and prepare to be wowed by icicle-like stalactites and sparkling crystals dripping from the ceilings.

Planning tip:  Tours last approximately 1½ hours and include a visit to three caves as well as a nature walk through tropical forest.

"While guests should leave the property and explore the island, you could stay on-site the entire time and have a great time."

The resort's  Cayman Cookout  festivities every January are a must for foodies, though the tasting menus at Blue by Eric Ripert make the resort a culinary destination year round. "Guests at the Cayman Cookout can experience great food and famous chefs, but it's really about making memories," Marc Langevin, general manager of The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman tells T+L at the 2024 Cayman Cookout. "We hope to create a myriad of experiences — a moment and memories — that they'll remember when they go home."

Opened in October 2019,  Palm Heights  is a stylish boutique property and one of the newest resorts in Grand Cayman. As  Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon recently reported for T+L , Palm Heights is "a haven for creative types — and those who want to be near them — who crave a bit of visual stimulation with their relaxing resort vibes." With just 52 rooms and suites, it offers a refreshing boutique experience amidst nearby mega-resorts.

Kittiwake Shipwreck

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park

Visit Grand Cayman's impressive  botanical gardens  to see all the richness of the island's flora, including species of orchids you won't find anywhere else on the planet. The park also welcomes visitors to its conservation facility for the island's endemic blue iguanas.

Library by the Sea

Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa's  Library by the Sea  serves a curated collection of literary-inspired cocktails that offer "a slice of time and history with each sip," says the resort's beverage manager Jim Wrigley. Highlights include a glowing blue  Dune -inspired drink and a Hemingway daiquiri made using 1932 Bacardí rum, just like the author would have had at El Floridita in Havana. Drinks are "served" with first-edition and vintage copies of the tomes that inspired their creation.

Located in the shopping and entertainment hub of Camana Bay,  Next Door  is a new cocktail bar offering some of the most innovative drink creations on the island. A commitment to using sustainable ingredients and frequent live music events have made it one of the island's best happy hour spots.

Blue by Eric Ripert

The Caribbean's only AAA Five-Diamond restaurant,  Blue by Eric Ripert  at the Ritz-Carlton offers tasting menus highlighting local seafood, making it the undisputed fine dining star of Grand Cayman. "Blue by Eric Ripert created the dining scene in the Cayman Islands, Langevin tells T+L. "It's the flagship restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton and elevates the dining experience on the island."

As Grand Cayman's first dedicated poke, sushi, and ceviche restaurant, The Westin's  Woto  has quickly become a favorite dining destination. Chefs trained in Japan make dishes authentic, while locally-sourced ingredients root them in Caribbean flavors. 

Peppers Bar & Grill

Tastemakers, foodies, and chefs across the island all recommend beachfront  Peppers Bar & Grill  as one of the best local restaurants in Grand Cayman. "The jerk chicken, rice, and peas are the best on the island," says Wrigley.

Coccoloba  at Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa is Seven Mile Beach's elevated beach bar experience. The Mexican street food-inspired menu offers everything from fresh-catch tostadas to churros and an incredible piña colada.

Grand Cayman enjoys warm, tropical weather year round, with temperatures hovering around the 80s. Wet weather and tropical storms are possible during the Atlantic hurricane season between June and November.

Travel high season falls from December through April. While prices are the highest and beaches the busiest, consistently mild weather and sunny skies make these months one of the best times to visit the island. For a sweet spot combining lower prices, fewer tourists, and nice weather, the late spring months of April, May, and June are another great time to visit Grand Cayman.

Cayman Cookout is held annually in mid-January and is worth planning your trip around. The event brings celebrity chefs to the forefront with cooking demos, wine tastings, curated dinners, and an array of exclusive activities. (In 2024, guests could go deep sea fishing with chef Emeril Lagasse and take a private jet to Jamaica's GoldenEye resort with chef Eric Ripert and the CEO of New Zealand-based winery Craggy Range.)

Visit in early May for  Cayman Carnival Batabano . Batabano isn't as over-the-top as the carnival celebrations of some Caribbean neighbors, but it’s a fantastic time to experience Caymanian food, music, and dance traditions.

Grand Cayman is one of the most accessible Caribbean islands for North American travelers. Numerous airlines offer frequent direct flights to Grand Cayman's Owen Roberts International Airport from cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and others. Miami, just under two hours away, is a gateway city to the Cayman Islands, with up to four daily direct flights to Grand Cayman during the high travel season.

Cayman Airways  offers small daily inter-island flights between Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. While there is no public ferry service between the islands like you might find in other Caribbean destinations, travelers can also choose private boat charters, which are relatively affordable.

Many visitors also arrive in Grand Cayman by cruise ship at the port in the capital city of George Town. The cruise port allows for up to four ships to anchor at once; any additional ships remain in harbor. Passengers are tendered to shore and arrive at one of three terminals.

Seven Mile Beach

Nestled along the white sands of one of the  most beautiful beaches in the world  is the indisputable center of the action in Grand Cayman. The Seven Mile Beach area is home to Grand Cayman's buzziest resorts, bars, and restaurants, all within short walking distance of each other.

Just a stone's throw from Seven Mile Beach is the  Camana Bay  area. Jump on a catamaran cruise from the harbor or explore the bustling Town Centre, which features frequent events and a Wednesday farmers and artisan market from 12:00 - 7:00 p.m. This modern neighborhood has lots of shopping and some of the island's best eateries and bars, including Next Door and chef-favorite  Agua .

Kick back and relax on the breezy white-sand beach at Rum Point for a quintessentially Caribbean escape from the island's built-up resort area. Rum Point's Wreck Bar holds the distinction for creating the iconic Caymanian cocktail known as the mudslide. While the recipe differs from many classically Caribbean beverages - think vodka, Kahlua, Bailey's, and cinnamon — it's an island classic. 

Head east for the antithesis of the built-up Seven Mile Beach area. Weekend farmers' markets and more remote beaches are favorites. "East End is more of a trek, but the local food here is worth it. You'll find food shacks where you just walk up and receive a plate of delicious food from grandma in the back who has been doing this for ages," says Wrigley.

With so many of the best resorts, bars, and restaurants in Grand Cayman clustered along Seven Mile Beach, booking a rental car is only a necessity for travelers looking to explore Rum Point or the island's East End. The airport is the best place to rent a car, with a number of large companies here. Remember that cars drive on the left side of the road in the Cayman Islands, though you can find cars with the steering wheel on either side of the vehicle.

Taxis tend to be the best transportation option for most travelers in Grand Cayman, though they can be comparatively expensive. Download  CI:GO , an app the Cayman Islands government created to calculate taxi fares between locations, which will estimate your fare in USD and Cayman Islands Dollars (KYD).

Grand Cayman doesn't have the ridesharing companies most visitors will recognize from home. The local app  Island Ride  is an alternative, though many travelers tend to stick with taxis, as ridesharing can be even more expensive than a standard taxi.

Local Buses

Mini-buses run on predetermined routes around the island and cost just a few dollars per trip, though they tend to get crowded and won't stop if they're already full. Catch a bus at a stop along the route or by flagging one down as it passes. More information on routes and schedules is available on the  Public Transportation Unit website .

Cayman Islands: What to know before you go

The Cayman Islands is a little Caribbean island paradise, an hour’s flight from Miami. It is both posh and high-end or as laid-back and low key as you like.

You might be surprised to know the dining scene in the Cayman Islands is really great and runs the gamut from roadside huts with a great reputation for home cooked food to classy restaurants by the sea with twinkly lights winding up the trees.

You’ll also find karaoke bars and Irish pubs, pubs that host quiz nights and cigar bars with a DJ and a dance floor.

But it’s the beaches you come here for with gin clear water lapping over soft white sand enticing you to wallow all day.

Where are the Cayman Islands?

The Cayman Islands is made of three islands, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac and they’re located under Cuba in the Caribbean Sea.

The flight time is about one hour from Miami and an easy side trip to Jamaica too.

The Cayman Islands weather

Before you know what to pack, you need to know what the weather’s going to be like!

Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 until November 30, but don’t let that put you off. Hurricanes are not regular occurrences in the Caymans. The last one that hit was in 2004, although another passed nearby in 2008.

I last visited in May and the temperature sat at a balmy 90+F/30C all week and dipped to about 27 overnight. Come July/August and you can expect only another 5 or 10F and maybe dipping to the high 70s in January.

But let’s face it, it’s the beach you’ve come here for so packing for a week is really easy:

What to wear day time in the Caymans

Flip flops (jandals/thongs) are what you’ll live in and a strappy pair of heels if you fancy dining in one of the many great restaurants or have a night on the town.

Bring at least two swim suits as you’ll be in and out of the water a few times a day and I only had one pair of togs with me so was always hanging them in the humid sun to try and get them dry before pulling them back on again. FYI wriggling into a wet bathing suit is like trying to wear a balloon skin. It’s bloody hard work!

Sarongs and simple sundresses are what everyone is wearing around resort pools, in beachside bars and it’s pretty much all you’ll be able to buy in the shops too. Don’t plan to come to Cayman to shop! Unless it’s duty free goods you’re after, as the locals can even shop in the duty free stores without needing to furnish the cashier with a passport or ticket. Personally I save my shopping for the US.

I brought a light cardigan and a cotton poncho but never took them out of my suitcase. The only time you might need one is on the plane when the air conditioning can be chilly. Most businesses and homes don’t chill the air down below about 22-25C because it’s just too expensive.

Sun hats and sun glasses are a whole look in themselves, so enjoy the big brimmed (yet oh-so practical) hat look with some big dark sunnies.

Night time in the Caymans

We girls have it easy when it comes to dressing up or dressing down as a simple dress or tunic and short skirt can be turned into an evening outfit with a bit of bling and a swish of makeup.

The men we went out for dinner with wore jeans and a T-shirt, polo neck shirt or short sleeved buttoned shirt. My brother even wore his flip flops to that fancy dinner in a restaurant by the sea, but husband chose dress shoes and socks. Of course men’s shoes are the bulkiest things to pack, so I’d suggest you wear them on the plane as you’ll only need them a couple of times in Cayman.

What power points do they use in the Cayman Islands?

They may be a British colony and drive on the left, but they are American when it comes to power, so bring US plugs. My best tip is to bring a multiboard from home and one converter plug so that way you can charge every gadget you brought here in one night. Cayman Islands currency

They use two currencies interchangeably: CI (Cayman Island dollars) and US dollars. The CI is about 20% higher than the US and you’ll certainly notice it on your aforementioned food bills! ATMs dispense both currencies so you can pick up your CI dollars when you are here.

The best things to eat in the Caymans

Seafood is the best thing about dining in the Cayman Islands. Try everything from raw tuna tartare to cerviche to sashimi as they are wickedly good. Mahi mahi and wahoo is a nice meaty fish that is often served blackened, on risotto or in tacos

Tipping is expected and don’t be surprised if the waiter/ess has already added 15-18% onto your bill. Make sure you check that lest you add it on again!

What is the Cayman Islands drinking age?

Drinking age in the Caymans is 18 years old, but you won’t find a load of college students down here in the bars taking advantage like you do in Mexico – maybe because it’s a more expensive vacation!

You also cannot drink on the beach or have any open alcoholic container on the beach or in your car. Instant fine.

7 things to do on Grand Cayman Island

Grand Cayman is shaped a bit like a shoe and you’ll probably spend most of your vacation on the left of the island, from Georgetown and along Seven Mile Beach. It’s a stunning beach with pure white sand and almost warm water that gently laps on the shoreline.

Edged in hotels and bars, it’s a great spot to spread out your towel or picnic blanket and settle in for a few hours with some snacks to build sand castles. You can rent jet skis and catamarans here, but do be aware that the hotels don’t let you sit on the sand in front of them unless you are one of their guests.

However, don’t panic, keep reading and I’ll show you where to go!

1 Seven Mile Beach

This iconic and ironic five mile stretch of dazzling white sand that runs from Georgetown (the main hub of the island and where cruise ships tender their passengers into each day).

It is lined with hotels and some of the sun loungers are free to use (Tillies and Tiki Beach), while at others you need to be a paying guest (Kimpton).

2 Tillie’s

Hang out on the beach at this bar/restaurant on Seven Mile beach which allows you to use the beach chairs with a minimum spend $25.

3 Stingray City

A must for first-timers, this is a sandbar in the middle of the bay and is a great experience – especially if you have friends with a boat who will take you out there and on to a beach bar afterwards! (Thanks Scott and Mel :))

If you book one of the many tour boats the crew will have squid for you to feed the 50 stingrays who come here each day for their dinner from the many squealing humans. It’s only waist-deep and the big females can measure about a metre in diameter as they brush against your legs feeling like a wet mushroom.

If you only have a day, or you’re short on time and don’t have your brother here to show you around, you can take a fun West Bay and 7 Mile Beach tour with a local guide who will tell you about the history of the Cayman Islands too.

4 Visit Rum Point or Kaibo

These are two really great beach restaurant/bars. You can bring your boat and tie up to their piers or drive around the island. It’ll take about 40 minutes to drive from Georgetown or if by boat, you can stop off at Stingray City on the way (as we did!) Kaibo allows dogs and both serve the deliciously moreish mudslide cocktail made of kahlua, Baileys, vodka and at Kaibo, a drizzle of chocolate sauce rolled around the plastic cup.

5 Dine at Morgans

Morgans is a beautiful restaurant on the water’s edge in Georgetown with the byline from ocean to table. We had a great meal here and my wahoo on risotto was to die-for. I also had the chicken liver pate (as I can’t resist a mousse-y parfait and our friends who live here highly recommended it). The cerviche and sashimi were shared around to much delight. But breaking from the ocean for a moment, the husb had an Angus fillet which he said was outstanding.

6 The Cayman Turtle Farm

A great thing to do. The Cayman Turtle Farm is a breeding centre as well as an educational, research and conservation centre and a fun park. Since I first visited the Caymans the original turtle centre was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, so this one has been built with more bells and whistles including water slides and play pools as well as turtle encounters where you hold them and even swim with them.

7 Cayman Crystal Caves

There are a reasonably new and terribly exciting discovery of stalagmites and stalactites under the lush tropical forest of Old Man Bay. They’re quite a distance from Georgetown so if you have a car and are doing an island tour, they might be worth popping into. There are three caves and you can only see them on a guided tour where pirates used to hangout hundreds of years ago. Tours run on the hour and cost US$40 per adult and $30 per child.

This amazing trip was made seamlessly possible by American Airlines who not only fly direct from Auckland to LA. but also to Miami and then to Cayman. Oh and when you get a round trip ticket, your luggage is free!

Hi Susan - did you ever do the expedited customs check they offer when you've gone here? I don't know if it is worth the $35/pp charge or not. Any input you have on this subject, I would appreciate hearing it from you.

Hi Annie, I'm not sure who Susan is (!) but we were the only plane in when we landed so customs was not busy. I didn't know about the expedited customs, but I guess on busy days it would be helpful. Cheers, Megan :D

I know immigration takes forever to get back to you in the Caymans, my brother had some great help with advice and getting settled from a relocation site called Mosaic Solutions run by expats and locals on the Islands, hope this helps you out (if the post seems to advert-ie and you are uncomfortable please take down <3 )

How To Take An Epic Family Vacation To The Cayman Islands

Our amazing family vacation to Grand Cayman continued to be a family favorite and we are sharing the rest of our trip below as part of a sponsored post series with The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism.

We started day three on this balcony with multiple cups of coffee. Neither Pete nor I could tear ourselves away. We had read about Seven Mile Beach, and it does look beautiful in the pictures, but when you see it in person it takes your breath away. You have a very calm breeze, soft sandy beaches, and water that changes color with the sun, but is always stunning shades of blue and aqua. I wish I could bottle up even a little of it and take it home with me.

It was so great having a full kitchen in our villa at the Caribbean Club because it made getting ready and out the door so easy, especially on this morning since we were driving to the other side of the island to see the Cayman Crystal Caves ! 

These impressive caves are inside a lush tropical forest and one of the newest nature attractions on the island. When you arrive, you are met by a knowledgeable guide who takes you on an hour and a half tour through the tropical forest and into the three caves below. We saw stalactite and stalagmite crystal structures and plenty of tropical plants and animal life, including strangler balsam trees, air plants, parrots, and bats and even a pond in one of the caves. Conservation is big here so the guides are careful to tell you not to touch anything in order to preserve it for generations to come. 

We even saw a good sized crab as we walked along the path to the caves!

Be sure to bring your camera when you visit because your tour guide also doubles as a pretty great photographer and there are a lot of unique family photo opportunities!

The girls all really enjoyed all of the formations that took eons to create!

This underground pond stole the show though. The water here is some of the purest on the island and we all took great care to not get too close to keep it that way. It was really magical to see! They have some lights set up for a little mini light show in the water too which was really cool to see. Speaking of cool, it was a bit cooler in the caves which we all enjoyed. The weather was pretty mild while we were there. It was warm, but not really hot and we got a few scattered showers and a couple of downpours to see and we were pretty much in heaven. Living in Southern California, we rarely get any rain and certainly not any gorgeous downpours like that so we felt so lucky to experience them. Of course, they were done just as quickly as they started, but it was still fun to experience.

All of the locals told us they don’t normally get that much rain so we really lucked out!

After the cave experience, we headed to Rum Point for lunch at Kaibo Beach Bar!

The location for lunch was perfect! It was right on the water and such a special spot to have a relaxing time!

The food, of course, did not disappoint. I’m not joking when I say that this island is made for people who enjoy good food. Every place we have been has been unique from the rest and they all had amazing cuisine options and delicious food! 

Emmy was pretty excited to have pizza out of the only outdoor brick oven on Grand Cayman! Plus the salads were so good too!

After Ash and Em finished eating, they headed down to the water for some fun while we finished eating.

Next door we even found fresh cold brew coffee!

We spent the rest of the afternoon driving around the island and we saw some pretty spectacular public beaches too before heading back to our hotel to get ready for dinner.

Dinner at Morgan’s At the Yacht Club might have been our favorite meal of our vacation. The food was perfect and the location was private and right on the water. The icing on the cake was the sunset that threw wild pinks and purples in the air and the sparkling lights glistening in the trees took it up even another notch. We all LOVED this evening.

Knowing that we had vegans in the party, they custom made an appetizer that was unlike anything we have ever had. This was a homemade onion ring with a potato puree center. Oh my! I have been craving this since we left! So creative and perfectly done. My favorite dish of the night was this vegan risotto though…I couldn’t get enough of it!

Pete also LOVED his Thai dish…

If seafood is on your list, you will want to dine here too. So fresh and flavorful was what I was told by other patrons of the restaurant. In fact, one family was dining with another and talking about how they always come here when they visit and not just once, at least 2+ times a vacation.

After dinner, we drove back to the hotel and had drinks on the balcony before bed. 

Before we knew it the sun was coming up on a new day! We were very excited for all the adventure ahead of us today. Of course, Emmy had one thing on her mind right when she woke up- BOOGIE BOARDING!

The only way she agreed to get out of the water without a fight was by reminding her that next on our itinerary was horseback riding!

Wow was this an amazing experience! These gentle guys were some of the most kind and accommodating horses we have ever had the pleasure of riding. 

We took the beach ride where at one point the horses go knee-deep into the water, but they are actually some of the famous swimming horses of the Cayman Islands. We had been booked for a swim ride but didn’t know it so we didn’t have swimsuits on and ended up doing a beach ride instead. As much as we had an absolute blast staying dry on the beach, we are doing the swim ride next time we are here! Can you imagine riding the horses while they actually swim? There was another group out there actually in the water while we were there and all you could see was the horse’s heads sticking up! What a bucket list-worthy item!

My horse really wanted to go in the water and would dip her feet in as often as she could while Ash’s horse was happy to stay dry as much as possible. 

We all had such a great time and it was great that they pick you up and drop you back off at your hotel as part of the experienced horse riding with Spirit of the West ! We also had a great ride leader who pointed out all the wildlife we saw (stingrays) and other parts of the beach. He shared some stories and was great to have to ask questions about the island too!

As if this day couldn’t pack any more fun, it did! 

We got to visit Stingray City and go snorkeling again, but this time at the reef! We again were booked with Red Sail Sports for this on their Stingray Sandbar & Reef Sail excursion. We had such a great experience with them before that I wondered if this one could be as good. It was!

This picture says it all! LOOK AT ALL THE STINGRAYS! So you board the catamaran and head out into the water where there is a sand bar and loads of stingrays. This used to be the spot where fishermen would drop their fish cuttings and soon the local stingrays caught on and would come for a meal here. It evolved into a popular destination where the stingrays are friendly enough that they can be held and kissed! Even if you never get close to them it is still really fun to be in the water here too!

When we first told Emmy about it, she was excited to jump in with them but said there was no way she was going to kiss one. “No way”, she said over and over again. Ha! Then she heard it gives you seven years of good luck and I guess she couldn’t miss that opportunity! She and Ash kissed five of them! They also enjoyed just interacting with them and watching them swim by every which way!

The crew jumped in first and held the stingrays too so you feel completely comfortable being this close. Plus we learned about them from a little talk the captain gave on proper interactions and how to keep the stingrays and humans safe and happy!

I just couldn’t get over how beautiful it is here. I mean every which way I turned it was like being in the ultimate island getaway. 

After a good amount of time hanging out in Stingray City , we got back on the boat for the short ride to the reef to go snorkeling!

Pete and the girls literally jumped in and were off exploring the whole time! Emmy was a pro and picked it up quickly. She had such a good time and they saw more fish than they could count. They even saw an eel and other people on our boat saw sea turtles! The water is so warm and clear that it makes for perfect snorkeling! 

After our time on the boat, we were hungry and so excited for dinner at Catch in Morgan’s Harbour . As the name states, there is some good seafood here that was just caught and us veggies were left just as satisfied by the other fresh options for us!

This island is just so kid friendly too. I love how we were able to have more of a gourmet meal at each restaurant and Emmy still could have pasta and french fries!

After dinner, we headed back to the hotel. Our time having a drink on the balcony like we had been doing the past days each evening was bittersweet this night knowing that it was our final evening on the island. I just can’t say enough how wonderful of a time we all had!

Instead of having breakfast in our villa at the  Caribean Club , we decided to venture down the beach and have a good meal to fill us up for the day of travel home. We have been trying to find later flights when we leave so that we have more time on the day we leave to enjoy the destination we are at and it worked out really well here. 

Our flight out was at 3:45 pm and since the airport is only about 20 minutes away we were able to really maximize our last day here. After breakfast, we went to the beach and then swimming in the pool before packing up. 

The airport here is under construction so it should be even nicer, but we still thought it was great as it is. We gave ourselves two hours before our flight to arrive at the airport and return the rental car and that was plenty of time. The airport is well laid out and easy to make your way through. There are also plenty of shops to buy something to eat at too. 

Back up in the sky and instead of resting or doing anything else, all I could think about was how soon we could come back. The Cayman Islands and all the friendly people there stole our hearts. It made for the perfect family vacation!

Your trip to The Cayman Islands looks like an absolutely amazing time! My kiddos would love to play in that pool and at the beach.

The Cayman Islands are so absolutely beautiful. I think my kid would love the sand more than anything, he’s not so into water right now. But I would love feeling the sunshine and having a tropical paradise to hang out in.

• Many people choose to rent a car in the Cayman Islands. Vehicles do drive on the left hand side of the road and visitors must obtain a temporary driver's license from the police station or at the car rental agency. To receive this license you must show your valid drivers license from your home country and pay a US$8.00 fee.
• English is the official language of the islands. Locals are usually friendly and willing to help if you need directions or any form of assistance. There may be subtle variations in local dialect but communication is generally easy and straightforward.
• There are many places to shop throughout the country but the two most popular shopping destinations are in George Town and Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman. Popular items for purchase include jewelry made from black coral, rum cake which can be purchased from Tortuga Rum Company, and caymanite, which is a semi-precious stone from the Cayman Islands. It's also easy to find souvenirs such as t-shirts, hats, postcards, and more.
• Prices in the Cayman Islands can be high because many items have to be imported. In particular, food is quite expensive. There is typically a 20% import tax on imported items and consumers ultimately pay more because of this. While U.S. dollars are readily accepted everywhere, make sure you fully understand the exchange rate so that you do not overpay for an item.
• Alcohol is expensive on the islands. You can expect to pay about twice as much for alcohol in a liquor store as you would in the United States. Still, buying your drinks at a liquor store is the most affordable way to purchase alcohol in the country. They are substantially higher in price in restaurants.
• The Cayman Islands are not known for their all inclusive resorts. Instead, many visitors choose to stay in condominium style accommodation with attached kitchens. This helps them to save on food costs, as restaurant meals can be expensive.

Best Places to Travel to From Cayman

One of the big perks of living and working in Grand Cayman is its proximity to major North American hubs and other Caribbean islands thanks to regular direct flights from Owen Roberts International Airport; you can even fly to London with a quick tarmac stop in Nassau, Bahamas. Whether you’re searching for a weekend getaway or a longer adventure, below are a few places worth discovering.

Miami, United States

Just a short 90-minute flight away, Miami is a multicultural, Latin-infused city known for its music, art, fashion, and architecture — and for many living in Cayman, it’s the place to go when you really need to shop due to the array of great malls and big box stores there.

Popular annual events like Art Basel and Miami Book Fair appeal to those with discerning tastes; and sports- and music-lovers can enjoy taking in a Miami Heat game or watching their favourite musical performer live on stage at the American Airlines Arena.

Grab a seat at a South Beach restaurant patio on Collins Avenue to people- watch. Admire the Art Deco hotels and exotic cars that cruise by. Stroll around the Design District with its sleek modern architecture, upscale interior design stores, fashion boutiques, cafes, art galleries and celebrity-chef restaurants. The Brickell neighbourhood is also a convenient place to shop or mingle with locals during happy hour. If you have a young family, then head north of the city for a short drive and you’ll discover Dinosaur World theme park; and just beyond, Legoland. Drive a little further and you’ll hit Orlando, where you’ll find the mecca of theme parks — Universal Orlando Resort and Disneyworld . You may want to tack on a few more days to experience them properly but you’ll be creating lasting memories for your kids.

When you’re ready to relax after a long day of family friendly activities, head over to the hip Armature Works in the historic Tampa Heights neighbourhood. Grab a bite to eat and browse its Public Market alongside locals.

New York, New York, United States

The city that never sleeps is one of those places you have to visit once in your life. There’s no other feeling than stepping into Time Square for the first time, watching a Broadway show, strolling through Central Park (spectacular in the fall), going to the top of Empire State Building , or ice skating at Rockefeller Center (especially during the holiday season).

Each of the Manhattan neighbourhoods has their own unique flare. SoHo is known for its trendy upscale boutiques and chain store outlets while Tribeca has its popular annual film festival — you may even spot a celebrity resident or two; the Upper East Side’s reputation for refined culture and shopping is well-known, as is its location on “Museum Mile,” which includes The Museum of Modern Art , Solomon R Guggenheim Museum , and the Frick Collection , to name a few.

For vintage frocks, check out the shops in the East Village, while Chelsea art galleries are where you’ll find works by up-and-coming artists. Take a stroll through the Financial District and Lower Manhattan and check out the big bull and Lady Liberty. Get lost in the Chinatown shops or take in some jazz at Blue Note in Greenwich Village, but if comedy is your thing visit one of many great comedy clubs instead. Don’t forget Little Italy for authentic New York calzones.

In fact, from local watering holes to five-star Michelin restaurants, it’s easy to drink and eat your way through New York any time and day of the year; and with so many live-music venues and a dazzling array of world-class acts performers, it’s no wonder the city is named twice.

Toronto, Canada

Toronto is a cosmopolitan city that has great shopping, restaurants, and activities and still has that family friendly vibe. With direct flights via Air Canada and West Jet airlines , you can be there in less than four hours. Ride the elevator up the CN Tower ; power shop at The Eaton Centre; visit the many exhibits at Royal Ontario Museum , Art Gallery of Ontario ; take a ferry over to Centre Island; bike along the scenic waterfront trail; stroll through the historic Distillery District with its artisan shops and eclectic restaurants and cafes; or grab a drink and a bite to eat on a patio in upscale Yorkville on a warm summer day.

Take a scenic drive just two hours north of the city and you’ll discover Ontario’s finest resort, Blue Mountain , situated in a quaint little town called Collingwood ; or head west for an hour to the world-famous Niagara Falls and historic Niagara-on- the-Lake, known for its great wineries and the summer Shaw Festival.

London, England

There are so many iconic places to visit in London, and the hop on and hop off bus tours are an ideal way to take it all in, especially for first-time visitors.

From riding the modern Coca-Cola London Eye to soaking in the grandeur of Buckingham Palace to taking a picture in front of Big Ben , the hardest part is cramming it all in! Royal fans will also enjoy tours of Kensington Palace and Westminister Abbey . For a spectacular bird’s-eye view of the city (and if you can handle heights), check out The View from the Shard , the tallest building in Western Europe.

If you’re a history buff don’t miss the Tower of London to catch a glimpse of everything from the Crown Jewels to a medieval king’s bed chamber, or the Churchill War Room to explore the underground bunker from which Winston Churchill and his wartime cabinet directed the Second World War. The Tate Modern and National Gallery are also iconic landmarks (Prepare to dodge the pigeons in Trafalger Square.)

Maybe you just want to get a feel for London’s urban, Bohemian side. Hop on the tube and head over to Camden Market or Borough Market. Or kick it up a notch and visit Covent Garden in the West End, where luxury fashion and beauty stores meet award-winning restaurants and theaters.

• On a budget? All museums are free entry in London City!
• Avoiding the tourist crowds? Catch the panoramic city views by having a cocktail at The Shard as opposed to the London Eye.
• On a rush? Take the tube, get to your place quicker and avoid the hefty taxi bill.

Havana, Cuba

Visiting Havana is like stepping back into time, with its Spanish colonial architecture, vintage cars and windy cobblestone streets — it’s less than an hour away by flight. Take a convertible car tour through the districts (or a cute cocotaxi); book a salsa lesson with a pro and head to a salsa club after to dance alongside the experts; drink a mojito at Ernest Hemingway’s old haunt, Floridita (or visit the Hemmingway Museum ); and smoke an authentic Cuban cigar practically anywhere you go.

There is a wonderful frenetic energy that comes alive when you visit Havana and immerse yourself in the Cuban culture and in the city’s character-filled beauty, from the kitschy art stalls to the political graffiti to the sounds of jazz and Latin music all around. You’ll want to bring your “good” camera for this trip.

Montego Bay, Jamaica

With its lush green mountainous terrain, beautiful beaches and relaxed “irie” vibe, Montego Bay provides a nice change of scenery from Cayman; and because you can get there in less than an hour by flight, via a short tarmac stop in Kingston, it makes for an ideal weekend getaway. A big bonus is the smattering of all- inclusive resorts — including top-rated golf resorts.

When you’re ready to get off the resort and explore Montego Bay, book a tour of the former plantation house, Rose Hall Great House ; take a sailing excursion to Negril along the scenic coast and visit the Pirates Cave or stop in to Rick’s Café to watch the world-famous cliff divers; and an hour and half drive away is Dunn’s River Falls if you’re hankering for a full day trip.

You can fly directly to these destinations with  Cayman Airways , with the exception of Toronto which can be done via West Jet or Air Canada and London which can be done via British Airways.
