Hello everyone, I meet a friend at a supermarket and after talking for a little while I tell him, '' Go visit us sometime !'' meaning that he should drop by to see us at our new house one of these days. My question: Does ''go'' + ''visit'' + ''sometime'' sound natural/usual in this example that I made up in informal speech? Thank you in advance!

What to Know About the Controversy Over Trump’s Visit to Arlington National Cemetery

T he Trump campaign on Tuesday posted a TikTok video of the former President and Republican nominee for President visiting Arlington National Cemetery. “We lost 13 great, great people,” Trump said in the video, over a montage of his visit. “What a horrible day it was.”

But Trump’s visit to the cemetery to commemorate the American troops who died in Afghanistan during the U.S. withdrawal from the country in 2021—deaths which Trump has blamed the Biden-Harris Administration for—has become the subject of controversy over reports that Trump campaign staff tussled with cemetery staff and were intent on politicizing the event at the nonpartisan burial ground.

To some, the incident reflects a pattern of insincerity and disrespect from Trump toward those who serve the country, while the Trump campaign has insisted that the story has been mischaracterized and blown out of proportion by the media.

Here’s what to know.

On Tuesday, one day after Trump participated in a wreath-laying ceremony with other Republicans and family members of the fallen soldiers, NPR reported that two of his campaign staff verbally abused and pushed a cemetery official who tried to stop them from bringing in an external photographer to Section 60, an area where the recently deceased are buried. 

“At that point, the cemetery official decided not to escalate things out of respect for the Gold Star families,” NPR reporter Quil Lawrence said on air on Wednesday. “These staff are quite used to guiding visitors of all kinds around what they consider hallowed ground,” he added. “But our source told me that they have never seen this level of disrespectful behavior at Arlington, ever.”

The source told NPR that Arlington officials had made clear that only cemetery staff were authorized to take photos or film in Section 60. A defense official also told the Associated Press on Wednesday that, before the alleged altercation happened, Trump’s campaign staff had been warned to not take photos. 

Arlington National Cemetery confirmed to NPR that “there was an incident, and a report was filed,” though it declined to share more details.

The cemetery also said that according to federal law, “political campaign or election-related activities” are prohibited in military cemeteries. This includes “photographers, content creators or any other persons attending for purposes, or in direct support of a partisan political candidate’s campaign.”

According to the National Cemetery Administration , “political or partisan activities of any nature, including filming of campaign ads, are not permitted on cemetery grounds.”

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday, citing defense officials and internal messages, that Pentagon officials had been “deeply concerned” that Trump’s visit to Arlington National Cemetery would become a “campaign stop,” but they “also didn’t want to block him from coming” out of respect of veterans’ family members who wanted Trump there.

An Army spokesperson said on Thursday in a statement to the media that the visitors to Arlington National Cemetery on Monday were made aware of the laws and regulations that prohibit political activities at the site.

“An ANC employee who attempted to ensure adherence to these rules was abruptly pushed aside. Consistent with the decorum expected at ANC, this employee acted with professionalism and avoided further disruption,” the statement said. “This incident was unfortunate, and it is also unfortunate that the ANC employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked.”

The statement also said that the incident was reported to the police but the cemetery official “subsequently decided not to press charges,” and so “the Army considers this matter closed.”

The progressive group VoteVets called on Trump to fire the members of his staff involved in the reported confrontation with cemetery staff and said : “This whole episode is sickening and [an] affront to all those hundreds of thousands of families who never agreed to allow their deceased loved ones to be dragged into politics.”

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung denied that there was a physical altercation, telling NPR in a statement that the campaign was “prepared to release footage if such defamatory claims are made.” He also posted on X that the team was given permission to record media during the visit, including a screenshot of what appears to be guidance that said Trump could have an “official photographer and/or videographer.”

"The fact is that a private photographer was permitted on the premises and for whatever reason an unnamed individual, clearly suffering from a mental health episode, decided to physically block members of President Trump's team during a very solemn ceremony," Cheung said in the statement to NPR. 

Trump and his allies have decried reports of the incident at Arlington National Cemetery as sensationalized. Trump’s running mate Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance said on Wednesday at a campaign event in Pennsylvania that “the altercation at Arlington Cemetery is the media creating a story where I really don’t think that there is one.” He characterized what happened as “a little disagreement” that “the media has turned…into a national news story.”

In a statement shared by the Trump campaign, family members of the deceased veterans who accompanied Trump at the ceremony said that the former President and his team “conducted themselves with nothing but the utmost respect and dignity for all of our service members.” According to the statement, the family members had given approval for Trump’s videographer and photographer to attend the event, “ensuring these sacred moments of remembrance were respectfully captured and so we can cherish these memories forever.”

Chris LaCivita, a senior Trump campaign adviser, who had posted videos on X of the wreath-laying ceremony, said in a statement: “For a despicable individual to physically prevent President Trump’s team from accompanying him to this solemn event is a disgrace and does not deserve to represent the hollowed [sic] grounds of Arlington National Cemetery,” the AP reported.

However, allegations that Trump and his allies were using the cemetery visit for political purposes were stoked further after a campaign fundraising email by Utah Gov. Spencer Cox included a photo from the visit, showing Cox and Trump at the wreath-laying ceremony. 

Cox, who had posted the same photo on X on Monday, said Wednesday on X that it “was not a campaign event and was never intended to be used by the campaign.” The photo’s inclusion in the fundraising email “did not go through the proper channels and should not have been sent,” he said, adding that his campaign would be “sending out an apology.”

Michael Tyler, spokesperson for Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris—who similarly visited Arlington National Cemetery in May—said in a CNN interview that the reports were “pretty sad when it’s all said and done,” and pointed to Trump’s “history of demeaning and degrading military service members.”

During his presidency, Trump had stirred controversy on multiple occasions for his leaked remarks on veterans to his staffers, including reportedly calling soldiers who died in battle “suckers” and “losers” and asking that wounded veterans be kept out of his military parade.

And earlier this month , Trump was criticized for seemingly comparing the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he gave to a campaign donor, with the Congressional Medal of Honor awarded to service members who have distinguished themselves through acts of valor. “It’s actually much better because everyone gets the Congressional Medal of Honor,” Trump said of the Medal of Freedom. “They’re soldiers. They’re either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets or they’re dead.” Harris’ campaign said at the time that Trump “knows nothing about service to anyone or anything but himself.”

Oasis announce major reunion tour 15 years after warring Gallagher brothers split

LONDON — Today is going to be the day Oasis finally get back together. After a 15-year split, brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher announced on Tuesday that their band Oasis will reform for a reunion tour.

“This is it, this is happening,” said a post on the Oasis's social media accounts.

The band will play 14 shows in the U.K. and Ireland next year, according to the announcement, including four dates in their native Manchester and four at London’s Wembley Stadium.

“The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised,” stated a press release, which added that shows outside Europe will take place next year — a hint that North American gigs could be announced next.

Oasis was one of the most successful of the 1990s, selling an estimated 75 million records and playing to stadiums across the world.

Both Gallagher brothers teased the announcement Monday, posting a short video to X showing a flickering "27.08.24" in the band's famous logo font. Liam Gallagher posted on Sunday morning: "I never did like that word FORMER."

And at 8 a.m. U.K. time (3 a.m. ET) on Tuesday the news came that legions of fans had been waiting for: A major tour that finally reunites the warring siblings.

The brothers were responsible for a string of hit albums and songs but were arguably just as well known for their off-stage antics, celebrity marriages and violent disagreements.

The band formed in Manchester, northwest England, in 1991 and got a recording contract on the strength of a single gig in Glasgow, Scotland, two years later where they were third on the bill.

The band's 1994 debut album, "Definitely Maybe," still considered one of the greatest British guitar records, catapulted them to stardom and made them figureheads of a resurgence of guitar music that the U.K. press called "Britpop."

The follow-up album, "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" cemented their star status with songs such as "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back in Anger," which led to success and extensive touring across Europe and North America.

Both Gallaghers have built successful solo careers after Oasis. Liam recently played a string of arena shows to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "Definitely Maybe," while Noel has played with his band, High Flying Birds, since 2010 and released four albums.

But while Gallaghers routinely play old Oasis songs at shows, for many fans it doesn't capture the magic of the two brothers appearing together.

The Gallaghers haven't performed together since a backstage fight at a music festival in Paris in 2009.

A rapprochement between them has often seemed unlikely, with both men trading insults and barbs on social media and in interviews.

But the past few weeks have seen a definite warming of relations. Noel paid his younger brother some compliments in an interview last week, praising his rasping vocals. "It’s the delivery or the tone of his voice and the attitude," he said. He compared Liam's voice to "10 shots of tequila on a Friday night" whereas his own was more like "half a Guinness on a Tuesday."

The band's reformation may have been prompted by other successful reunions of their 90s peers. Blur, Oasis's rivals in a U.K. chart battle in 1995, reformed to play two dates last year at Wembley Stadium. The first Blur date sold out all 90,000 tickets in minutes.

The Stone Roses, another Manchester band and a longstanding inspiration to the Gallaghers, reformed for a series of gigs in 2012 after a gap of 16 years.

Income from recorded music has diminished since the advent of streaming services, but live music for big-name acts is booming. According to one industry estimate the Oasis reunion could make £400 million ($528 million).

Below is the full pay schedule for the month, and some questions you may have about your benefit payments. While The Social Security Administration sends out checks monthly and your check will arrive at the same time every month, not everyone gets their checks on the same day.

Instead, Social Security checks are scheduled based on date of the month you were born and when you started receiving benefits.

Social security payment schedule september 2024, how is the social security payment date determined.

Social Security payments are typically paid out starting on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. The remaining two payments will be paid out on the following two Wednesdays of the month. Which week you receive your payment depends on your birthdate. There is one big exception, which I'll cover below.

Will I receive my other government benefits on the same day?

If you've received Social Security benefits before May 1997, or receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income, your payment schedule isn't determined by your birthdate. Instead, payments are paid out every month on the same date with a couple of exceptions that I'll explain below. 

Social Security payments will be sent out on the 3rd of each month, while SSI payments are sent out on the 1st of each month. These dates will sometimes change if the 1st or the 3rd of the month falls on a weekend or holiday. For instance, March 3 fell on a weekend, so Social Security recipients received their March payments two days early, on March 1. The same will happen in the month of November.

The only benefits that are paid on the same schedule are Social Security and Social Security Disability Insurance.

It was easy to find him - the red jacket stuck out in the slow-moving crowd.

I'd come to meet Andre Rostant in Soho on a Friday afternoon armed with a list of questions: those that occur to me and probably most of us when we pass a Big Issue seller on the street. 

They ranged from the personal to the practical - how does it all work? How do vendors make money?

Most of them, it turned out, Andre was prepared to answer - some he wasn't. 

What are the criteria?

Andre, who is 60, has been a Big Issue vendor for more than a decade.

Founded in 1991 and now the world's most widely circulated street newspaper, the magazine offers homeless people, those at risk of homelessness or those experiencing poverty a chance to earn an income. 

There is no application form but sellers must be over the age of 18.

Once their age has been verified, a vendor is allocated a pitch and can start selling the magazine immediately that day - they get five free copies to sell initially.

How much do sellers earn?

The Big Issue operates as a business and vendors buy their magazines for £2 and sell them for £4, making £2 a copy.

Sellers "are immediately earning and putting [money] into their pocket", says Catherine Parsons, managing director of the Big Issue Changing Lives Community Interest Company.

"It's their stock and their investment so every sale counts for those vendors," she adds. "While £2 doesn't sound a lot, it is a lot to that individual." 

Andre, who lives in temporary accommodation with his teenage children, says his job is a "flexible way of making money" when he needs - though not a long-term solution.

He says it works as "supplemental income or emergency income", adding: "It would be perhaps ambitious to use it as your sole income. It's a difficult thing to make a full income out of."

Alongside selling the magazine, Andre does other work where he can - until three weeks before I met him he was also working three days a week doing secretarial work at a law firm.

When you're homeless, Andre says, "a lot of your spending is on emergency stuff because things break and run out and if you are waiting until the end of the month you just don't have the money - but with this you do. 

"With this, you can fill in the gaps."

What is a typical day like?

Andre had been at his pitch for about three hours when I met him and was rounding off for the day.

There's no set times for sellers to be on the street - but a typical shift might be five or six hours. Many other vendors do part-time or casual work alongside, like Andre.

The key, he says, is being consistent about the time spent on your pitch, comparing selling to fishing: "Some days you can stand here and as pretty as you look, you can just stand here for a couple of hours and people walk past smiling and someone might give you a pound.

"On another day it's as though the fish are jumping in.

"You could sell no magazines one day and 20 the next."

'It's a blunderbuss technique but it works'

So what's the best way of getting someone to stop and buy a copy?

Andre's method is simple: "I'm not shy of people - my technique of selling is I will stand in the middle of the pavement as an obstruction and by way of attrition you will get sales.

"I make a sound, I'm standing in the middle of the pavement - it's a very blunderbuss technique but it works."

Most interactions are positive, he says: "The experience of people is overwhelmingly good. People are overwhelmingly sympathetic and good.

"But I've had in the past young drunk men dragging my magazines and shouting out things. There is a presumption that this is something we are begging for - it's not.

"In the same way WH Smith is there on the corner selling magazines, I'm here on this corner selling magazines in the same way. I buy them and sell them."

From destitution to published author

My last question was personal: how did Andre come to find himself outside a Foyles bookshop near Leicester Square selling the Big Issue? 

He tells me he became homeless in 2012 - he was "destitute" and in "terrible debt".

He had worked for the Financial Services Authority doing secretarial work before he lost his home.

He's not comfortable sharing any more details, but he hints at the difficulties he has faced: "I think I would have imploded in some way if I had tried to just keep doing a regular five-day-a-week job with the pressure of the children and the pressure of the circumstances that led to our being homeless. 

"I just couldn't have done it."

Andre's experiences of poverty have also inspired him to write a book, The Muffin Man, which was published in June and explores the mind of a Big Issue vendor working in the underbelly of Soho.

It was published by Arkbound, a charity book publisher, but he was repeatedly rejected at first: "I sent my manuscript to a load of publishers and all of them wrote back and said 'this is interesting but it's not our cup of tea'."

'This job has saved lives'

Selling the Big Issue is about much more than the money for Andre - it's life-saving.

"This is a way of meeting contingencies and finances but more importantly than that, perhaps, is the human contact," he says.

"It's interacting with people which you wouldn't necessarily otherwise get."

He says: "If you are homeless and single, who do you communicate with? Who do you meet? Who do you see during the day? 

"This interaction brings you back into the real world. I can say for certain that this job has saved lives.

"There are people who might otherwise have taken their life but because of this and the interaction with other people, they don't."

He also says the Big Issue acts as a "a stepping stone back into regular society".

Ms Parsons agrees: "It's a really difficult job and not very well paid and we assume that people who want to sell are people affected by poverty.

"It's that sense of belonging to a community and having regular people they can talk to and a sense of being seen and heard.

"It's a really important structure in lots of people's lives - it gives them a reason to get up and get out of bed in the morning.

"It's also really important that those vendors are not just standing outside, sometimes in the rain, for six hours and people are not just walking by and not even making eye contact.

"The one person that stops and buys a magazine will keep them going for another hour getting wet in the rain."

In the end, Andre says, Big Issue sellers have many of the same struggles as most people do.

"While I still need to find a fiver for milk and bread - this helps take the edge off," he says.

"And it's London - everybody has got multiple jobs and nobody has got any money. We're all working like maniacs just to stand still.

"If I do this I can make sure my children have shoes on their feet and clothes on their back and food in their bellies."

As Britain woke up from a long bank holiday weekend, Sir Keir Starmer gave the country something else to look forward to: tax hikes and spending cuts.

These were all-but confirmed in a Downing Street news conference outlining the "dire" state of the public finances.

One of the first things to go under Labour - ministers say due to the economic inheritance left by the previous government - was universal winter fuel payments for pensioners.

Planned strikes by LNER train drivers have been called off this weekend, the Aslef union has announced.

Members were due to walk out tomorrow and over several more weekends this year over a dispute about the breaking of work practice agreements.

However Aslef has announced today that the industrial action has been suspended and drivers will work as normal. 

It follows meetings between the union and LNER bosses.

Sainsbury's has announced a £130m deal to buy 10 Homebase stores and convert them into supermarkets , in a move that is expected to create around 1,000 jobs.

It said the deal should be completed next month.

The new shops will cover "key target locations" for expansion across England, Northern Ireland and Scotland, the supermarket said.

The first converted store is due to be opened next summer, will all sites expected to be converted by the end of 2025.

Vinted has launched a new electronics category on its app, allowing for items such as games consoles, headphones and smart watches to be sold for the first time.

Retail Week reported that the new category has been brought in due to the popularity of the limited number of electronics allowed to be sold on the app previously.

Fashion will remain the focus of the second hand marketplace, it said.

Experts are reacting today after it emerged that employers will have to offer flexible working hours - including a four-day week - to all workers under government plans.

To receive their full pay, employees would still have to work their full hours but compressed into a shorter working week - something some workplaces already do.

Currently, employees can request flexible hours as soon as they start at a company but employers are not legally obliged to agree.

The Labour government now wants to make it so employers have to offer flexible hours from day one, except where it is "not reasonably feasible".

It is understood Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is behind the move and wants to introduce legislation on it this autumn after consulting with unions and businesses.

The government has denied employers will be forced to allow staff to work four-day weeks, or make employees work a four-day week.

But some experts have reacted positively to the proposed plan, with one describing it as a "beacon of hope" for employee wellbeing.

Gabriel McKeown, head of macroeconomics   at Sad Rabbit Investments, said talk of a four-day week is now longer a "whisper in the corridors of progressive workplaces".

"Yet, despite the natural 'too good to be true' suspicion surrounding anything that feels remotely utopian, this policy could be a beacon of hope for improved mental health and enhanced productivity," he said.

He noted that implementing the change would not come without "complexities" for employees.

Meanwhile,  Cara Cunniff, leadership and performance consultant   at ThriveWell Global, said a "clearer focus on outputs over inputs may be just the thing to jolt the British economy into action".

The plan "throws down the gauntlet" and "may be just the catalyst employees and businesses need" to recruit and retain the best workers, she said.

"We're in a race for scarce talent and the expectations of the workers of today and tomorrow bear little comparison to those of former generations."

Sky News has also spoken to Joe Ryle, director of the 4 Day Week Campaign , and Michelle Evans, founder of Small Business Britain , about what they think of the government's plan.

Mr Ryle says he welcomes the move which shows that ministers recognise "the four day week is here to stay" - though he noted the proposal only allows for a compression rather than a reduction in hours, which is what the campaign is aimed at.

He says some companies which have allowed employees to reduce their hours and maintain their pay have "seen productivity being maintained and the wellbeing of workers improving". 

Offering a different opinion, Ms Evans says it could cause "challenges" for small to medium businesses.

There are lots of sectors where this "just isn't feasible", she adds, saying firms such as those in the retail and hospitality sector "can't just close for a day" or afford to hire more staff.

She adds that it's important to "be really clear" about how far flexible working can go. Smaller businesses "aren't the bad guys" and "want their staff to do well", she says. 

As the hopes of tens of thousands of Oasis fans are crushed by a tweet just now announcing that everyone who's got lucky in the presale ballot has already been contacted... we've been asking just how much you'd be willing to pay for a ticket.

Oasis revealed yesterday how much tickets for the upcoming tour will cost, after Liam and Noel Gallagher confirmed they'd set aside their differences for a hotly anticipated reunion.

Prices for the cheapest seats start at around £73 and around £150 for standing - while the most expensive ticket will see fans paying over £500.

It had been widely reported that tickets could soar over the £100 mark.

A poll of Sky News followers on LinkedIn has offered some insight into how much people are willing to fork out to see one of the biggest bands of the 90s:

The largest proportion of people (42%) said they'd want to spend less than £100 to see Oasis. Only 6% said they'd pay £200-£300, while interestingly, a higher proportion (11%) said they'd be willing to spend over £300.

Social media users are reacting to the ticket prices, as fans prepare to find out today whether they've been successful in a resale ballot.

One X user said they were "so disappointed", while another said the band were "taking the p***".

"Those Oasis ticket prices are a farce," said another.

Other fans took to social media with evidence of much cheaper tickets from days gone by...

But while some have been left feeling put out by how much an Oasis ticket could set them back - others have defended the pricing.

One user said they felt the tickets were a "fair price", while another said: "Did people really expect Oasis to charge the price of a Watford at home ticket and a packet of pork scratchings? Come on."

"Oasis can just take my money I absolutely do not care what the ticket price is," said another fan.

House prices are now growing at the fastest annual rate in nearly two years, the UK's largest building society has said, with rises expected to continue.

In the year up to August, houses became 2.4% more valuable with the average property costing £265,375, according to Nationwide.

But prices are still below the all-time highs recorded in the summer of 2022 by about 3%.

The annual increase and associated increase in buying demand is still "subdued by historic standards", Nationwide said.

The deadline for working parents of nine-month-olds in England to register for 15 free hours of government-funded childcare a week is tomorrow.

From 1 September, the free childcare offer is being extended to eligible parents with children of this age and older.

But with applications due by 31 August, families need to act now.

Three and four-year-olds

In England, all parents of children aged three and four in England can claim 15 hours of free childcare per week, for 1,140 hours (38 weeks) a year, at an approved provider.

This is a universal offer open to all.

It can be extended to 30 hours where both parents (or the sole parent) are in work, earn the weekly minimum equivalent of 16 hours at the national minimum or living wage, and have an income of less than £100,000 per year.

Two-year- olds

Previously, only parents in receipt of certain benefits were eligible for 15 hours of free childcare.

But, as of April, this was extended to working parents.

This is not a universal offer, however.

A working parent must earn more than £8,670 but less than £100,000 per year. For couples, the rule applies to both parents.

Nine-months-old

On 1 September, this same 15-hour offer will be extended to working parents of children aged from nine months. From 12 May, those whose children will be at least nine months old on 31 August can apply to received the 15 hours of care from September.

From September 2025

The final change to the childcare offer in England will be rolled out in September 2025, when eligible working parents of all children under the age of five will be able to claim 30 hours of free childcare a week.

In some areas of Wales, the Flying Start early years programme offers 12.5 hours of free childcare for 39 weeks, for eligible children aged two to three. The scheme is based on your postcode area, though it is currently being expanded.

All three and four-year-olds are entitled to free early education of 10 hours per week in approved settings during term time under the Welsh government's childcare offer.

Some children of this age are entitled to up to 30 hours per week of free early education and childcare over 48 weeks of the year. The hours can be split - but at least 10 need to be used on early education.

To qualify for this, each parent must earn less than £100,000 per year, be employed and earn at least the equivalent of working 16 hours a week at the national minimum wage, or be enrolled on an undergraduate, postgraduate or further education course that is at least 10 weeks in length.

All three and four-year-olds living in Scotland are entitled to at least 1,140 hours per year of free childcare, with no work or earnings requirements for parents. 

This is usually taken as 30 hours per week over term time (38 weeks), though each provider will have their own approach.

Some households can claim free childcare for two-year-olds. To be eligible you have to be claiming certain benefits such as Income Support, Jobseeker's Allowance or Universal Credit, or have a child that is in the care of their local council or living with you under a guardianship order or kinship care order.

Northern Ireland

There is no scheme for free childcare in Northern Ireland. Some other limited support is available.

Working parents can access support from UK-wide schemes such as tax credits, Universal Credit, childcare vouchers and tax-free childcare.

Aside from this, all parents of children aged three or four can apply for at least 12.5 hours a week of funded pre-school education during term time. But over 90% of three-year-olds have a funded pre-school place - and of course this is different to childcare.

What other help could I be eligible for?

Tax-free childcare  - Working parents in the UK can claim up to £500 every three months (up to £2,000 a year) for each of their children to help with childcare costs. 

If the child is disabled, the amount goes up to £1,000 every three months (up to £4,000 a year).

To claim the benefit, parents will need to open a tax-free childcare account online. For every 80p paid into the account, the government will top it up by 20p.

The scheme is available until the September after the child turns 11.

Universal credit  - Working families on universal credit can claim back up to 85% of their monthly childcare costs, as long as the care is paid for upfront. The most you can claim per month is £951 for one child or £1,630 for two or more children.

Tax credits -  People claiming working tax credit can get up to 70% of what they pay for childcare if their costs are no more than £175 per week for one child or £300 per work for multiple children.

It's likely to be one of the last few days that Burberry is included in the list of 100 most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange - the FTSE 100 - and this morning the British fashion retailer is the biggest loser of the index.

Its share price is down 1.69%, the most of any of the 100 companies, as it's expected to be booted out next week due to share price tumbles. It had been a stalwart of the FTSE 100 for 15 years.

Oil is ending the week back above $80 - higher than most of the past few days - at $80.42 for a barrel of the benchmark Brent crude.

The pound has stayed high, or more accurately the dollar has stayed weak, with one pound falling just about below the more than two-year high of $1.32. Currently a pound buys $1.31.

In an update to our previous post, NatWest says the issue with its banking app that left customers unable to access some services this morning has been fixed.

A NatWest spokesperson said: "Some customers experienced difficulty in making payments via the mobile app this morning. 

"This has been resolved and customers can make payments as normal. We're sorry for any inconvenience caused."

How Does Mpox Spread, and Who Is Most at Risk?

Here’s what scientists have learned about the virus, which was recently declared a global health emergency.

This month, the World Health Organization declared mpox a global health emergency. The virus, formerly known as monkeypox, is spreading quickly in parts of Africa, particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo. The outbreak there has been fueled by a new version of the virus that has also been discovered in Sweden and Thailand.

The fast-evolving situation has led to anxiety and confusion about who is at risk of infection, and how the virus spreads. “I can understand why there’s concern,” said Dr. Taimur Khan, associate medical research director at Fenway Health, a medical center in Boston. But, he added, “it’s not like we’re being caught off guard in the same way that we were with Covid-19. It’s a virus that we are familiar with, to a certain extent, and we have tools already.”

We asked Dr. Khan and other experts to answer common questions about the virus.

What are we learning about how mpox spreads?

As the virus has evolved, so has our understanding about how it circulates, said Dr. Rosamund Lewis, technical lead of the World Health Organization’s global mpox response team.

In the 2022 outbreak, many cases were caused by sexual contact. The newer version of the virus continues to spread through sex, but experts said it is also circulating in other ways. Those could potentially include skin-to-skin interactions, contact with infected animals and touching contaminated surfaces, objects or fabrics, like bedding and clothes. Researchers are working to understand how the virus may spread through respiratory droplets and prolonged face-to-face interactions.

“We don’t always know exactly what was the mode of transmission in any given situation,” Dr. Lewis said.

Scientists are continuing to investigate when people are contagious. Some people can spread mpox days before they feel ill. No evidence to date indicates that people who never develop symptoms can spread the virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Who is at most at risk?

The risk is greatest in countries in central and eastern Africa, especially the Democratic Republic of Congo and bordering nations.

“The reality right now is the risk for Americans is exceedingly small,” said Dr. Carlos del Rio, an infectious disease specialist at Emory University.

Health care workers and people in the same household as someone with mpox are susceptible to infection. Because the virus spreads so efficiently through intimate contact, people with multiple sexual partners are at higher risk for contracting the virus.

Why do some people get more severe cases than others?

Mpox can cause painful rashes, fevers, head and muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes and other symptoms. Most people recover from mpox within a month, but the virus can be fatal. The version currently spreading in Africa appears to cause more severe illness, and be deadlier, than the version that spread in 2022.

Infants and children are at higher risk for getting seriously sick, in part because their immune systems are still developing. “Children become much more ill, much more quickly,” Dr. Lewis said. A majority of deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo have been among children under 15 .

People who are immunocompromised, particularly those with untreated H.I.V., are also more likely to become seriously ill because their immune systems can’t fight off the virus effectively. Contracting the virus during pregnancy can lead to complications, including pregnancy loss.

What’s the situation in the United States?

The newer version of mpox spreading in Africa has not been detected yet in the United States. But people are still getting infected with the version that spread widely in 2022. While American cases are currently lower than they were during that outbreak, there have still been over 1,700 cases nationwide this year — more than double the count at this time last year.

“People are still getting sick, and people are actually coming forward less to talk about their experience of getting sick, because it’s sort of fallen out of the public perception,” said Joseph Osmundson, a clinical associate professor of biology at New York University.

Who should get vaccinated? How long does the vaccine protect you for?

Global health officials have raised concerns about gaps in vaccine access: Even though the Democratic Republic of Congo is the epicenter of the current outbreak, for example, no vaccines are available there. The shots are more accessible in wealthy, Western countries.

“Our major role right now is honestly to try to keep the outbreak contained to Africa and send vaccines over there,” Dr. del Rio said.

But the renewed attention on mpox may also encourage eligible people in the United States to get vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that some men who have sex with men, transgender people and nonbinary individuals get vaccinated, including those with multiple sexual partners or who have had sexually transmitted infections. People who know or suspect they were exposed to someone with mpox should also get vaccinated.

Experts said that some other groups may also want to get the shots, including women who have sex with bisexual men. “If you are in queer sexual networks, regardless of your identity, you are able to get vaccinated,” Dr. Osmundson said.

The C.D.C. has an online directory people can use to find mpox vaccines near them. People should get two doses, at least 28 days apart; if someone has received only one shot, it is never too late for a second. Studies have shown that two doses of the vaccine can reduce the risk of infection between 66 percent to 88 percent.

Scientists are now studying how long that protection lasts. “We can’t promise that the vaccine will be effective forever,” said Dr. Kelly Johnson, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco. People can get mpox even if they’ve been vaccinated, she said, but those cases tend to be less severe. She compared mpox vaccines to Covid shots.

“There’s a good chance that if you do get Covid and you’re vaccinated, you’re not going to be one of those people who gets super sick,” she said. “I think it’s a very similar message with mpox.”
