What You Need to Know About Sailing Solo on Norwegian Bliss

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

It can be tough to be a single person on a cruise. The vast majority of ship cabins are designed—and priced—for two people, and many of the activities on ships are intended for couples and families. Norwegian Cruise Line has set out to change that. As the first cruise line to specifically cater to solo cruisers, it developed its Studio concept, which offers small, attractively designed and affordably priced cabins that are perfect for one person. Guests who stay in these cabins also get access to the Studio Lounge, a private-access area where they can socialize, snack, watch TV, or just relax.

Norwegian Bliss , the newest and biggest ship in the fleet—sailing to Alaska, the Caribbean, and along the Pacific Coasts of Canada and Mexico through 2019—includes a block of Studio staterooms. (You’ll also find them on Norwegian Escape , Norwegian Getaway , Norwegian Breakaway , Norwegian Epic , and Pride of America .) Below, you’ll find information that will help you decide whether this type of cabin is for you. Note that cruise prices can change quickly, and that the fares mentioned below were accurate at the time of publication.

All solo cabins are inside cabins.

Norwegian’s Studio staterooms are all windowless inside cabins. On Bliss , they feature a “virtual window” that projects ocean views from outside the ship, so you’ll have some light, plus you’ll be oriented to the time of day. Rooms are about 100 square feet in size and some of them are connecting. This is a good option if you’re traveling with a friend and still want some space of your own.

You'll want to book early.

Norwegian Bliss is brand new, and it’s mix of affordability and attractive design (the Observation Lounge is a beauty) is already proving popular. Its summer 2018 Alaska sailings are largely sold out, including the Studio staterooms. Keep an eye peeled for last-minute openings, or look forward to better pricing in 2019.

A studio lets you save.

There is no single supplement for Studio staterooms on Norwegian, and they generally cost about 20 to 30 percent less than it would cost to sail as a single person in a regular inside cabin that’s intended for two people.

For example, we found Studio staterooms available on a seven-night Alaska sailing that departs on May 5, 2019 for $1,649. By comparison, if you stay in a regular inside cabin—which offers an additional 35 square feet of space—as a solo traveler, you will pay $1,898. On another seven-night sailing, this time on October 13, 2019 along the west coast of Mexico, you’ll pay $1,319 for a Studio stateroom, compared to $1,798 for a regular inside cabin. The savings speak for themselves, but if you don’t think you’ll use the special Studio Lounge, don’t like or need the extra design touches, or simply crave more space at a good price, an inside cabin may be a better choice for you.

Note that as cruises fill up, the price of these cabins can fluctuate. If Studio staterooms start to sell more quickly than inside staterooms, you may see the price on those inside staterooms dip accordingly, making them more affordable than Studios.

Booking and shopping online can be a tricky.

Even if you don’t go online to book your cruise, you’ll probably use the Internet to research it. Searching as a solo traveler requires an extra step. Always remember to adjust your search query so you’re looking at pricing for one traveler. Most search engines on both the cruise line sites and agency web sites default to two people traveling together. If you search for two travelers, you’ll be shown the price of the cruise per person, but these prices are only valid if there are two people in the cabin. If you then adjust the query to one traveler, you’ll note that the prices go up to accommodate for the single supplement.

If you book a regular inside cabin as a single traveler, you’ll never see the single supplement broken out onto its own line item on your bill. Your fare will simply reflect the total price for a single traveler in whichever cabin you choose. This is different, say, than with tour operators or vacation packagers, which often charge a fixed single supplement and will spell it out on your receipt.

Solo travel means a solo set of fees.

When you sail solo, you’ll only ever pay taxes and gratuities for one—whether you're in a Studio cabin, or a solo traveler in any other kind of cabin. If you plan to book a cruise that includes onboard credit or other perks, consider that Norwegian will often offer a specific level of credit just for Studio cabins; if you sail solo in a double-occupancy cabin, you may receive a prorated amount of credit, based on what you paid for your cruise. It all depends on the offer, so read the fine print carefully.

I spent 5 nights on a cruise with entire decks designed for solo travelers, and it was one of the best sailing experiences I'd ever had

  • I stayed in a 100-square-foot studio during my six-day solo cruise aboard the Norwegian Getaway .
  • I was surrounded by fellow solo travelers and had no trouble meeting others on the ship.
  • The cruise line planned everything long before I boarded, removing the solo-travel stress.

I booked a 100-square-foot studio aboard the Norwegian Getaway for my six-day solo trip.

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

Earlier this year, I had time to take a vacation but didn't want to spend a ton of money or have to fly. So I searched online for cruises departing from New York City and landed on a six-day voyage aboard the Norwegian Getaway .

I didn't have anyone to travel with since the trip was so last minute, but I didn't let that get in my way. Four days before departure, I booked a 100-square-foot studio cabin that Norwegian Cruise Line designed and built for solo travelers ages 21 and older.

Here's what the experience was like.

Passengers traveling in the cruise's studios don't have to worry about paying a single-traveler supplement.

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

I booked the Getaway's last available studio, 11505 on deck 11, directly through the cruise line for $700, paying an additional $283 in taxes and service charges.

The rate for the studio included WiFi, an unlimited drink package, one specialty dining meal, and a $50 voucher to put toward a port excursion.

But if I were traveling with another person, it would've made more sense to book an inside stateroom. The price likely would've been lower per person, and the room itself would've been larger.

But Norwegian, like so many other cruise lines, bases its stateroom rates on double occupancy and charges solo travelers a single supplement to stay in them alone.

Because I didn't want to pay an extra fee and didn't have anyone with whom I could split the stateroom cost, I went ahead with the smaller studio.

All the studios are in the same area, and guests need a key card to access this section of the ship.

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

The Getaway's 59 studios are toward the front of the ship and divided between decks 10 and 11.

To get to my accommodation, I had to use my key card to access the area where all the studios are. This extra line of security made me feel safe and secure staying by myself.

From the moment I entered the studio area, I knew I was in for something special. The hallways feature blue, green, yellow, and red lights.

Because these studios are tucked away and somewhat secluded from busy parts of the ship, both my room and the area outside it were extremely quiet. The only noise I heard was the cabin steward vacuuming in the adjacent studio and hallway.

I think the Getaway's studios are more stylish than its staterooms, though I do wish my cabin had exterior views.

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

Unlike the Getaway's inside staterooms, which have similar decor to its ocean-view and balcony staterooms, the studios are sleek, stylish, and futuristic inside. For example, the panels along two sides of the full-size bed are covered in white cushions and backlit by LED strip lights.

My studio had a round window with a one-way view of the corridor, but I wish I had an exterior window or a small balcony . Fortunately, I don't suffer from seasickness, but passengers who do may benefit from having a view of the outside scenery .

My studio had various places where I could store my belongings.

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

The tiny cabin featured two wardrobes with handles that doubled as towel racks, a pullout trash can, and a bedside ottoman that I could use as a desk chair.

The small bathroom was right by the studio's entrance.

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

It had a sink, an all-glass shower with tesserae tiles, and a toilet.

I haven't seen any cruise line besides Norwegian build lounges exclusively for solo travelers. I loved it but wish the bar stayed open later.

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

Open 24/7, the Getaway's two-story studio lounge features an ultramodern design with color-changing LED lights on the ceiling and an oval-shaped mezzanine with cozy banquettes.

The first floor has a speakeasy bar, a vending machine that serves wine, and a self-service refreshment station with coffee, juice, and water. When I was there, the lounge also had a lot of snacks like Danishes, croissants, chicken sandwiches, tuna sandwiches, pound cakes, and cookies.

The bar in the studio lounge was open daily between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., but I wish its hours spanned a bit longer. I rarely saw any other travelers there, even though the studios were sold out. It would've been great to have at least one event in that space at the beginning of the cruise to meet fellow solo travelers.

On disembarkation day, I would've loved to grab breakfast in the lounge. But I noticed that there were no refreshments available.

Because Norwegian planned the entire itinerary, I didn't have to worry about any trip logistics.

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

Cruising is a convenient, cost-effective way to ease into solo travel.

Norwegian took care of all the logistics — including meals, onboard events, and exciting excursions — before I even boarded the ship. All I had to do was show up.

Dining alone is a common concern, but most cruise lines seat solo passengers together or put them at tables with extra space, which makes it easy to meet people.

I was fine eating by myself. Initially, I thought it would be awkward , but it wasn't.

While waiting for my food to arrive, I wrote in my journal, organized photos and videos on my phone, posted on social media, and struck up conversations with the crew and neighboring diners.

The ship had so many onboard activities and offerings that I didn't even feel like I was traveling alone.

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

Each evening, I got a copy of the Freestyle Daily , the cruise line's printed newsletter. It was filled with information about the ship's activities, including a daily gathering for solo travelers in a casual setting.

During the cruise, there were also meetups for veterans, LGBTQ people, and people between 18 and 25 years old. I also spent a large amount of time enjoying the adults-only areas, such as the Thermal Suite, Vibe Beach Club, and the casino.

After this trip, I won't hesitate to sail alone with Norwegian and other cruise lines.

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

Sure, I would've loved more activity at the studio-lounge bar and a window with an ocean view, but all in all, my first stay in a Norwegian studio was superb.

This trip gave me time to relax and prioritize myself without worrying about anyone else.

I found it liberating to set my own schedule, explore ports at my own pace, and indulge in self-care. I dined whenever I wanted, didn't have to coordinate schedules with anyone , and never worried about saving seats at onboard performances.

I didn't feel sad or lonely traveling by myself. After all, I was surrounded by thousands of people on the ship and had an easy time staying busy.

5 Things I Loved And 2 I Didn’t Cruising Solo On Norwegian Prima

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

  • Cruises and Sailing
  • Solo Travel
  • Types of Travel

I’m in my own little sanctuary on Norwegian Prima , and I’m loving it. Or am I?

Norwegian Cruise Line leads the way for solo cruisers with its innovative Studio cabins. These are the first staterooms specifically designed and priced for solo travelers, and I chose one of these cabins during my cruise with NCL, a hosted trip that I enjoyed on the line’s brand-new ship as it sailed from Galveston, Texas.

Norwegian Prima is the first ship in the new Prima Class for NCL, and it offers 73 Studios, which are small inside cabins (no balconies or windows) that measure a compact 94 square feet and provide a great option for solo cruisers who ordinarily would have to book a regular cabin and foot the bill for the full double-occupancy price. (Most cruise lines charge a single supplement, which amounts to a surcharge on the solo cruiser who is in a room meant for two.)

The Studio concept is not new for Norwegian Cruise Line, though. The line has been the industry leader with these cabins on several of its ships. Other cruise ships feature solo cabins, but NCL has made the largest allotment on its ships, with dozens of Studios, and also creates a kind of ship-within-a-ship complex with its exclusive Studio Lounges.

I had heard a lot about these staterooms and wanted to try the Studios on Prima so that I could share my experience. There is a large interest in solo cruising, but the cost can be prohibitive for many people who effectively pay an extra full fare to get on board.

I spent four days and nights onboard Norwegian Prima living the Studio life, and here’s what I learned.

The Studio lounge

Things I Loved Cruising Solo

1. smart, simple design .

These little staterooms measure less than 100 square feet, but they put every inch to smart use. On Norwegian Prima , the décor offers a modern look, with blue, gray, and black as the primary colors.

There is plenty of storage, with two closet spaces and a tall open rack that allows for easy organization and access to items like computers, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, chargers, and cameras. A little cutout in the wall next to the bed serves as a sort of nightstand, with light switches, a little shelf, and a USB outlet. You can stick your luggage under the bed, and the TV is attached to the wall with an arm that lets you telescope the TV away from the wall and spin it into a variety of positions for viewing.

There is no mini-fridge, however, which is something you get in all other cabin categories.

The bathroom is an open concept, with see-through glass to keep the room from feeling small. After all, you don’t need bathroom privacy in a cabin for one. Half of the space in the bathroom is dedicated to providing a large walk-in shower, which is a big plus.

2. A Bigger Bed

The room is small, indeed. But your bed is bigger than you would get in a standard cabin. The Studio staterooms on Norwegian Prima feature full beds. On a cruise ship, I am used to the typical twin-size bed, which is about 15 inches narrower. You can really feel the difference, and it offered a welcome upgrade in comfort.

The cafeteria in the Studio lounge

3. The Studio Lounge

This is the shared exclusive space on Norwegian Prima for passengers staying in the Studio cabins. The area is a fantastic retreat where you can hang out and meet fellow solo cruisers. I enjoyed coming down to do a little work on my computer and watch the World Series game between the Phillies and Astros showing on the large TV.

5 Seasickness Remedies That Frequent Cruisers Swear By

4. Peace And Quiet

The lounge features two comfy living room–style rooms, and these spaces offer couches, chairs, art on the wall, a large-screen TV, and bookshelves filled with homey décor, like photo books, vases, and board games. You can even order room service to the Studio Lounge. It’s a wonderfully serene space to come to read or play a game or chat with new friends.

5. Snacks And Drinks

The Studio Lounge is just steps away from the cabins. In addition to the living rooms, it features a large cafeteria-style snack room with tables and a large communal counter seating area that offers goodies throughout the day. The small buffet features fruits, yogurts, and pastries at breakfast, and little sandwiches, apples, bananas, and cookies the rest of the day.

There are plenty of drink options, as well. It features complimentary coffee, espresso, and juices. Separate machines require you to swipe your room card to pay for self-service beer, wine, margaritas, and sodas.

It was a fantastic convenience to pop down for a drink, and I’ll admit to having far too many chocolate chip cookies during my short cruise.

Things I Didn’t Like Cruising Solo

1. the darkness .

With no window or balcony, the Studio cabins offer no natural light. This can make it a little disorienting because it’s always dark inside the cabin. This makes for a great night’s sleep, but for people, like me, who like to wake naturally to the sunrise creeping into the room, this might be a little frustrating.

Pro Tip: Tune Into The Sunrise

A fellow cruiser gave me a great tip for helping with this issue. Almost every cruise ship offers a TV channel dedicated to showing the “bridge camera view.” When cruising in these Studio staterooms — or an inside cabin in general — you can turn your TV to this channel at night and allow the sunrise to gradually wake you up via the TV screen. Norwegian Cruise Line has considered this, it seems, because these cabins offer a “virtual porthole” channel on the TV that gives a live view of the outside.

Studio cabin

2. The Tiny Space

While I mentioned that it is well designed and I had no problems organizing and storing my items, the space in the room is a bit cramped. It offers a desk area with a little stool. However, it’s not a spot that I would use (or envision any cruiser really sitting there). Instead, you will spend most of your time in your bed while in the cabin. This is nice and relaxing for the most part, but the floor space is also tight around the bed, especially for a person my size (6′ 4″ and 190 pounds).

The shower is a nice size, but the bathroom space for the toilet and in front of the sink can be tight, too.

Pro Tip: Move slowly and deliberately while in your studio (especially large people) so you don’t end up banging your knees or elbows.

The Verdict

All in all, I had a wonderful and relaxing time staying in my — albeit tiny and windowless — Studio cabin on Norwegian Prima . While there wasn’t as much interaction with other cruisers in the lounge as I might have hoped, this probably was more a function of the number of solo cruisers staying in these staterooms on my particular sailing. This ship was not full, and I only saw a few others who were booked in the Studio rooms with me.

However, it was definitely nice to be able to escape to my exclusive retreat space whenever I wanted to get away from the hubbub of the main public areas.

Norwegian Epic Studio Stateroom

Norwegian Epic Studio Staterooms Can Actually Be a Good Deal

This site contains affiliate links for which we may be compensated.

It’s all about “doubles.” Double Dutch, double trouble, double whammy and when it comes to cruising, the ever-present double occupancy.

If you are new to solo cruising or if it’s your umpteenth go at it, you probably have run into the dreaded Single Supplement. People cruise and travel solo for a variety of reasons, from business to a divorce celebration.

On average, almost all cruise lines…almost all of the time…charge a solo passenger 200% of the base cruise fare. Or even worse, they double-charge for the port fees and taxes!

Norwegian Epic Studio Stateroom

Norwegian Epic Studio Staterooms are Amazing

While you can do your homework or ask a travel agent to do it for you, it’s a necessary evil to closely monitor cruise line pricing to “catch” a deal with a reduced single supplement.

It does happen on occasion. When faced with a plethora of unsold cabins on a particular sailing, a cruise line will reduce the supplement anywhere from 175% down to 25%. They do this to fill the ship. A less than full ship means less tips for their crew, less onboard revenue for the ship.

Until Norwegian Epic was launched in 2010, there was no option for the solo cruise passenger but to reserve a double occupancy cabin and pay the prevailing rate. Then came forward-thinking Norwegian Cruise Lines and their very innovative studio cabins.

Weighing in at a “whopping” 100 square feet, it sure sounds like it’s way too small for anything but a walk-in closet.

Not so. Devised by an actual yacht design company, the one hundred and twenty-eight Studio cabins feature a full-size bed, flat panel TV, a “window” to the corridor (they are all inside staterooms), a desk, sink, shower and separate lavatory. There is ample storage space, too. Take a tour with me…

One really cool feature of the Studio Stateroom is the private key-card access to the two-story Studio Lounge. Comfortably furnished with plush sofas and chairs, you can enjoy 24 hour self-service coffee machine, watch TV or have an cocktail during their own exclusive “Happy Hour.”

NCL Epic Studio Lounge

The Studio Lounge is a big reason to try this solo experience. That, and just staying in something so unique and kitsch as the Studios. But book early. The Studios have become very popular and with only 128 of them, they sell out seriously fast. Especially if you don’t want one with an adjoining door.

NCL Epic Studio cabin sink and shower area

Besides the Norwegian Epic, the newer Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Escape also have Studio Staterooms with 59, 59 and 82, respectively.

My First Country Music Cruise Experience

My First Country Music Cruise Experience

Hi Mike, Your questions are very serious ones so I suggest that you or your travel agent contact the cruise line directly. Their phone number is 1-800-327-7030. If needed, ask for a supervisor to confirm. My feeling is that for medical reasons you would be allowed to bring the water needed for your machine and possibly they could bring in a portable refrigerator. Keep in mind that the solo staterooms are super small and there may not be enough space for a refrigerator. Sometimes it’s less expensive to pay the single supplement on a double occupancy stateroom than for a studio. Please call the cruise line to confirm the equipment and water. I’d hate to give out incorrect information. Thank you for sharing your important question. Sherry

I've been on 6 different cruise lines, here are the pros and cons of each one

C ruising is one of my favorite kinds of family vacations . Whether I’m looking for sun-drenched beaches in the Caribbean , scenic views in Alaska, or city-hopping around the Mediterranean, cruises are a fun and hassle-free way to sample a variety destinations all around the world. Once I decide where I want to go on a cruise vacation, my next step is to pick a cruise line.

BIG SAVINGS: Kids sail free: 7 cruise lines with kids cruise free deals

I’ve sailed with most of the major cruise lines for families that depart from the United States and around the globe, and each one has its pros and cons. If you’re thinking about taking a cruise at some point in the next year or so, now’s the time to book for the best prices and availability. But before you do, make sure you’re choosing a cruise line that fits your personality and vacation style.

Table of Contents:

  • Disney Cruise Line
  • Carnival Cruises
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Norwegian Cruise Line
  • Virgin Voyages
  • Princess Cruises

How to choose a cruise line: pros and cons of each one

Here are my recommendations based on my personal cruise experiences with some of the world’s most popular cruise lines.

How we chose these cruise lines:  Read our methodology for selecting family cruise vacations .

1. Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line (DCL) pioneered the concept of family-friendly cruises. Its sailings give everyone a chance to see beloved Disney characters, watch fun Broadway-caliber shows, and have dedicated spaces and activities for kids and adults.

Pros of Disney Cruise Line

Stateroom design: One of my favorite things about Disney Cruise Line is the stateroom design. Fleet-wide, most of the staterooms have DCL’s signature split bathroom, where one bathroom has a toilet and sink and the other has a tub shower and a sink. Additionally, there’s lots of storage space, a privacy curtain to divide the room into two spaces, and luggage can easily roll under the bed. In some staterooms, there’s additional space for sleeping five people with a pull-down Murphy bed, which is great for larger families.

CARIBBEAN DREAM: These 6 cruise lines offer the best Caribbean cruises for families

Rotational dining: Disney is known for its rotational dining concept , where families will move through three distinct dining rooms at dinner throughout their cruise (and the dining room waitstaff moves with you). Each ship has different dining rooms, but a fan-favorite continues to be Animator’s Palate, which is available on the Disney Dream , Disney Fantasy , Disney Wonder , and Disney Magic . One of my favorite dining rooms is Worlds of Marvel on the Disney Wish (and coming to the Disney Treasure in 2024).

Dedicated spaces for kids and adults: Disney cruises cater to children with dedicated kids spaces, activities, and entertainment, but adults can have just as much fun. On all of Disney’s cruise ships , there are spaces that are exclusive for adults , too, like pools, lounges, bars, and restaurants. No matter your family’s makeup, everyone will have a space they enjoy.

Cons of Disney Cruise Line

Price: One of the biggest cons to a Disney Cruise vacation is the price compared to other family-friendly cruise lines. Disney does offer discounts on cruises throughout the year, but they’re not available to every type of guest or sailing date.

No drink packages: Another con for some people is that Disney Cruise Line does not offer drink packages, so you’ll be paying for each cocktail, specialty drink, beer, wine, or specialty coffee individually. These charges can add up quickly if you aren’t careful, so be sure to put a spending limit on drinks and check your stateroom folio often to be sure you’re staying within your budget.

STAR WARS AT SEA: With Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge and Cargo Bay, every day is ‘Star Wars Day at Sea’ on the Disney Wish

2. Carnival Cruises

Sailing with Carnival Cruises always feels like a fun party. The cruise line is known for its big ships that are filled with big personalities. I always tell people that Carnival is a great starter cruise line to see if you like cruising, or if you want a cruise where the party never stops.

Pros of Carnival Cruise Line

Price: One of the biggest pros for Carnival Cruise Line is the affordability factor. Carnival is constantly running deals on cruises, so it’s easy to find a discounted sailing . The price for its smaller, older ships is usually cheaper than the bigger, newer ships, but depending on where you want to go and what season, the cost could vary greatly between cruises. To get the best deal, I recommend calling Carnival to book directly because the booking agent can play with discounts and sometimes combine them to give you a better deal than what you can get by booking online.

NO HIDDEN FEES: 7 best all-inclusive cruise lines in the world

Celebrity chef-backed restaurants: Carnival is noteworthy for its celebrity chef-backed restaurants. Kids and adults love the burgers and BBQ that come straight from Guy Fieri’s Flavortown kitchens, and everyone can get a taste of the Big Easy from celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse on Carnival Mardi Gras , Carnival Celebration , and Carnival Jubilee . And don’t forget about everything fried chicken at Big Chicken from Shaquille O’Neal.

Easy loyalty program: Every cruise line has a loyalty program. Carnival’s is called the VIFP Club , and it’s one of the easiest loyalty programs to understand and move up in. After just one cruise you’re enrolled and get members-only offers, and the perks go up from there, including priority check-in and boarding on embarkation day, $25 to use in the casino, and cabin upgrades.

Cons of Carnival Cruise Line

Older ships feel very dated: Even though Carnival’s newest ships are bright and shiny, its older ships feel very dated. While the brand does put the older ships, like the Carnival Elation from Jacksonville, Florida, through dry dock repairs and upgrades, those upgrades are mostly for cleaning and maintenance and not to make the ships feel newer.

Food and service can be hit-or-miss: Even though the celebrity chef-backed dining is very good, the rest of the food offerings on Carnival’s ships can be hit-or-miss, even in specialty dining restaurants that cost extra on some cruises. On a recent sailing, I dined in Chibang, which is a mash-up of Mexican and Chinese; the food was just okay and I felt rushed through the entire meal. I was hustled in and out the door for dinner in about 30 minutes. The main dining room can also have a lot of variation where some meal services are perfectly paced and others are rushed or exceptionally slow.

3. Royal Caribbean

Families looking for another option for a fun cruise that’s not Disney will love Royal Caribbean . In fact, this is my pick for the best cruise for multigenerational travel.

Pros of Royal Caribbean

Beautiful private island: One of Royal Caribbean’s most exciting offerings is its private island destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay . The island is home to family beaches, a spacious pool with a swim-up bar, a massive water park, and more. It’s also going to debut a new adults-only area, Hideaway Beach, in early 2024. If you choose to order a drink package it’s valid on the island, and lunch is served at a beachside BBQ so you don’t have to go back to the ship for a meal.

TEEN-FRIENDLY CRUISES: 5 cruise lines that know how to keep teens (and their families) happy

Variety of homeports: Royal Caribbean has one of the largest number of home ports around the world. Some of the most exciting home ports outside of the United States include Rome, Italy; Athens, Greece; Dubai, UAE; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Sydney, Australia; Singapore, Singapore; and Shanghai, China. From North America, there are 14 different home ports, including Miami, Florida; Galveston, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Seward, Alaska.

Over-the-top amenities on each ship: Royal Caribbean has some of the most over-the-top cruise amenities among the lines I’ve sailed with. Many of these amenities and activities are included in the overall cruise fare, which is even better. Kids and adults can enjoy things like water slides and splash pads, a surf simulator, rock climbing walls, zip lines, ice skating, observation pods, bumper cars, laser tag, and more.

Cons of Royal Caribbean

Ships can feel crowded: Royal Caribbean ships are some of the biggest in the world, meaning that the larger ships can feel crowded. On Wonder of the Seas , there are 2,876 staterooms that can accommodate up to 7,084 guests; and on Icon of the Seas, the, 2,805 staterooms can accommodate up to 7,600 people. Even though guests are split between more than a dozen decks, it can still get overcrowded at the pool, the buffet, or in theaters for showtime.

4. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line is ideal for families vacationing with teens or adults looking for a getaway of their own. The newest Norwegian ships are stunning with high-caliber entertainment and fun around every corner.

Pros of Norwegian Cruise Line

Included dining options are great: Norwegian Cruise Line’s included dining options are stellar. After sailing on Norwegian Prima last year, I was blown away at the quality of the main dining room food for breakfast and dinner. At breakfast, I had one of the best iterations of steak and eggs I’ve ever had. I also love Indulge Food Hall, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served and you can pick from a variety of made-to-order dishes ranging in cuisine style from Indian and Mexican to ramen and salads.

BRING THE LITTLE ONES: 10 toddler-friendly vacations that are just as much fun for parents

Glamorous staterooms: The staterooms on Norwegian are simple and refined, with plenty of storage, comfortable beds, and a decent-sized bathroom. I like that Norwegian also offers solo accommodations for those traveling alone. The solo staterooms are priced exclusively for solo travelers, and those guests also have access to the private Studio Lounge.

Fantastic onboard entertainment: Norwegian pulls out all the stops for onboard entertainment. While sailing on Prima , I was able to see a Broadway-caliber show detailing the life of Donna Summer, head into a lounge with live rock-and-roll music every night, enjoy live bands around the ship, and even take in a few comedy shows. There’s no end to the amount of entertainment onboard, and it often goes into the wee hours of the night.

Cons of Norwegian Cruise Line

Added activities add up quickly: Unlike other cruise lines where most activities are included, Norwegian’s best activities are an added cost per person, which adds up quickly. Things like go-kart racing, an afternoon in the virtual reality Galaxy Pavilion, and mini-golf are all additional costs once you get onto the ship.

Boring private island: Norwegian’s private island, Great Stirrup Cay , is one of the most boring private islands I’ve been to on a cruise. While the beach is pretty, there are not a lot of included activities, and getting to the island is a challenge since you have to take a tender boat to and from the ship. However, there are some fun excursions you can book on the island, like swimming with pigs, taking a guided kayaking tour, or renting water sports equipment.

5. Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages is an adults-only cruise line that caters to the party lifestyle and makes sure everyone always has a good time.

Pros of Virgin Voyages

Vast entertainment options: No matter which Virgin ship you end up sailing on , there’s going to be a huge variety of entertainment. When I sailed with Virgin, I loved the live music around the ship and the pop-up entertainment that sometimes just happens in the main atrium area. At night, there are a few places to see shows, including drag and acrobatic performances.

ROMANCE AT SEA: 7 best cruise lines for couples (and their most romantic voyages)

Richard’s Rooftop: Those staying in a suite are welcome to enjoy Richard’s Rooftop, which is a dedicated area on an open deck for suite guests. This area has a hot tub, plenty of cushy loungers, a dedicated bar and bar team, and great views of the ocean passing by. Every day there’s also a Champagne happy hour, where bartenders will continuously walk around filling up your cup until you tell them to stop.

Cons of Virgin Voyages

Scarlet Night can be hard to get into: One of the hardest things for me to become involved with was Scarlet Night. This is the premier party of Virgin Voyages where every guest dresses in red and is encouraged to explore the ship for pop-up entertainment before heading to the pool deck for an all-night party.

The overall story of Scarlet Night is hard to follow if you don’t get to the right places at the right times on the ship, and I found that the staff didn’t really care to help people who looked lost and did not know what to do during “free exploration” time. I’ve heard that some of the pinch points of Scarlet Night have been worked out since my sailing, so I would say just go with the flow of the night and try to make friends with other guests to venture around the ship together.

Cabins aren’t maximized for storage: The biggest con for Virgin Voyages is that the standard cabins feel more like an IKEA showroom than a luxury escape on a brand-new ship. The cabins lack enough storage for longer sailings, and the beds are not tall enough to roll suitcases underneath.

6. Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises mainly caters to older adults looking for a more chill vacation with elevated service.

Pros of Princess

The Sanctuary: One of the best things about Princess Cruises is the Sanctuary, which is an adults-only deck space that you can pay to use for a day or for the entire cruise. The Sanctuary comes with a dedicated team that learns your preferences quickly, from where you like to sit to when you enjoy lunch (which can be brought to you). Besides having a serene oasis, the Sanctuary means you’ll always have a comfortable lounge chair to enjoy. When I was on Caribbean Princess over the summer, I was always greeted with a smile when I walked up the Sanctuary and spent most of the day enjoying the breeze and sunshine.

NO PASSPORT NEEDED: Everything you need to know about river cruises in the U.S.

Onboard staff is fantastic: Princess crew members are among the most dedicated to guest service I’ve seen. Everyone knows your name by day two of the cruise, knows your preferences for things, and can even give you tips about what you may enjoy around the ship or at some ports of call.

Cons of Princess

Entertainment feels dated: I wanted to like the entertainment, but most of it felt very dated, especially the shows in the main theater. The musical performances were mostly songs from my grandparent’s era, and the acting was just okay. I did enjoy the nightly 18+ entertainment that was hosted by the entertainment staff, but overall the entertainment offerings were weak relative to other cruise lines.

Solo cruises are huge right now, here's where to find the best deals

Want to travel alone without paying a premium? Cruise companies are paying attention.

Andrea Black

Don't miss out on the headlines from Lifestyle. Followed categories will be added to My News.

When I think about the cruises where I have travelled solo, I think about the space. The space to do whatever I please, the space to dine whenever I like, and in the cabin, the space to swing several cats. There’s something freeing about sailing by oneself, and science backs it up. Research has found that spending time alone has the potential to increase creativity and personal exploration, and give you more social energy.

Solo travel and cruises are a good match. You can easily spark new connections with like-minded adventurers on excursions or over a meal, or simply take time out for yourself. Room service and a book? Sounds like a great option. A British cruise survey on cruise.co.uk found that more than 70 per cent would choose a cruise over a land-based break for a solo adventure.

But solo cruisers will also know that it takes a little know-how to find the right cruise (and the right price). You don’t want to be paying a double occupancy fare.

Finding an affordable solo cruise is possible, if you know where to look.

Three words solo sailors need to look for are: “no single supplement”, meaning guests will pay the same price per person for a whole cabin without incurring any additional charges.

Luckily there are often promotions and deals catering to solos. For example, Australian expedition company Coral Expeditions has extended its waiver of solo supplement fares across most sailings for the remainder of 2024 and has opened these special fares for the Kimberley season in 2025.

“We continue to see strong growth in demand for solo travel, both in Australia and abroad,” Coral Expeditions’ Jeff Gillies says. “Our expedition product, our ships and our crew create a very inclusive and enjoyable community of like-minded explorers, and we look forward to hosting new and returning guests.”

Cruising is growing in popularity for solo travellers.

UK brand Riviera Travel River Cruises is offering a series of solo traveller itineraries in Europe in October this year with no single supplement. And luxury French line Ponant is offering a free solo supplement on select sailings in 2025, including the Kimberley.

“Our free solo supplement has become extremely popular among Australian and New Zealand travellers looking at travelling with a group of friends, without sacrificing the comfort and privacy of their own cabins,” Ponant’s Deb Corbett says.

Celebrity Beyond is one of the new ships catering to solo travellers.

Along with deals, cruise lines are responding to demand by building (and refreshing) ships with more single staterooms.

Celebrity Cruises ’  Celebrity Beyond  and  Celebrity Ascent  each have 32 spacious single veranda staterooms.

Earlier this year, Norwegian Cruise Line introduced three new solo stateroom categories – Solo Inside, Solo Oceanview and Solo Balcony. NCL solo cruisers also get access to The Studio Lounge – a private lounge shared only by solo guests.

Aurora Expeditions ’ new vessel,  Douglas Mawson , set to launch in 2025, will feature six solo staterooms across two categories (Aurora Stateroom Single and Aurora Stateroom Single Superior). The first time guests can test out these staterooms will be on an 11-day expedition called Coastal Tasmania: Untamed Wilderness , which will depart Hobart on December 1, 2025.

Choosing between an oceanview vs. verandah stateroom can be one of the most exciting – and sometimes daunting – decisions when planning your first time going on a Disney cruise or your tenth. Understanding Cruise Ship Stateroom Categories

Before we compare oceanview and verandah staterooms, it’s essential to understand the main categories available on most cruise ships. These categories cater to different preferences and budgets:

  • Inside Cabins: No windows and located within the ship’s interior. These are the most budget-friendly, offering a cozy, no-frills experience.
  • Oceanview Cabins: Feature a window or porthole that allows natural light and a view of the sea. They’re priced higher than inside cabins, offering a comfortable middle ground for those wanting to experience the ocean without stepping outside.
  • Balcony (Verandah) Cabins: Come with a private outdoor space equipped with seating. These are more expensive than oceanview cabins, ideal for those who enjoy spending time outdoors in privacy.
  • Suites: The most luxurious option, suites are the largest cabins available, often featuring premium amenities and exclusive perks. These are often referred to as the “Concierge” level on Disney Cruise Line because they offer a higher level of service and convenience.

These four categories are standard across most major cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival, and Disney Cruise Line, though specific names, features, and pricing may vary slightly.

Many consider oceanview and verandah staterooms among the best staterooms on a Disney cruise due to their perfect balance of comfort, views, and value. Let’s explore these options further!

Oceanview Staterooms: A Room with a View

An oceanview stateroom with large round porthole window

Key Features:

  • Window or porthole (non-opening)
  • Natural light and sea views
  • Generally less expensive than verandah rooms
  • Typically located on lower and middle decks

Oceanview staterooms offer a glimpse of the outside world through a window or porthole. On Disney Cruise Line ships, these windows are often quite large, especially in the Deluxe Family Oceanview category. Some even feature a padded seating area in the window – perfect for curling up with a book while watching the waves.

Size and Layout

Oceanview rooms are typically similar in size to inside staterooms, though some lines offer larger “deluxe” or “family” oceanview options. Here’s a breakdown of oceanview stateroom sizes on Disney Cruise Line ships:

  • Disney Magic/Wonder : 214 sq ft
  • Disney Dream/Fantasy : 204 sq ft
  • Disney Wish/Destiny/Treasure : 218 sq ft

These rooms usually feature a queen-size bed, a sitting area with a couch (often convertible for additional sleeping space), and a split bathroom design unique to Disney ships.

  • Budget-conscious cruisers who want natural light
  • Families who need more space than an inside room
  • Cruisers prone to seasickness (seeing the horizon helps!)
  • Those who don’t plan to spend much time in their room

Potential Drawbacks:

  • No private outdoor space
  • Limited fresh air (windows don’t open)
  • Some may have obstructed views (always check before booking)

Verandah Staterooms: Your Private Outdoor Oasis

  • Private balcony with seating
  • Floor-to-ceiling glass doors
  • Fresh air and ocean breezes
  • More spacious feel
  • Usually located on higher decks

Verandah staterooms (also called balcony cabins) are a step up from oceanview rooms, offering your own private outdoor space. This can be a game-changer, especially on scenic cruises or warm-weather itineraries.

A Disney Wish Verandah Stateroom

A Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah onboard the Disney Wish

Verandah rooms are often slightly larger than oceanview staterooms, with the added bonus of outdoor space. On Disney ships, verandah staterooms range from about 246 to 299 square feet, including the balcony. The interior layout is similar to oceanview rooms, but with the addition of the balcony access.

  • Cruisers who value private outdoor space
  • Couples looking for romantic moments
  • Families who want extra room to spread out
  • Anyone cruising to scenic destinations (like Alaska or the Norwegian Fjords)
  • Those who enjoy dining or relaxing on their balcony
  • More expensive than oceanview rooms
  • Balcony noise can sometimes be an issue
  • Privacy concerns (though most cruise lines have measures to ensure privacy between balconies)

Comparing Across Cruise Lines

While Disney Cruise Line offers great options, it’s worth considering how they compare to other major cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, and others for your family.

Royal Caribbean

  • Offers “Virtual Balconies” in some inside rooms with floor-to-ceiling HD screens displaying live outside views
  • Unique interior-facing balcony rooms overlooking Central Park or the Promenade on Oasis-class ships
  • “Infinite Verandah” on some newer ships, featuring a floor-to-ceiling window that opens halfway down
  • See our Disney Cruise Line vs. Royal Caribbean page for a comparison

Norwegian Cruise Line

  • “Studio” oceanview rooms designed for solo travelers on some ships
  • “The Haven” – a ship-within-a-ship concept with premium oceanview and balcony suites
  • Some ships feature “The Waterfront,” a promenade that brings the indoors out with oceanfront dining and bars
  • Review our Disney Cruise Line vs. Norwegian article to compare

Carnival Cruise Line

  • Some oceanview rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows
  • Select ships offer “Havana” staterooms with special pool access
  • “Cloud 9 Spa” staterooms (both oceanview and balcony) with special spa perks
  • Read our Disney Cruise Line vs. Carnival Cruise Line comparison for more

MSC Cruises

  • “Yacht Club” suites with exclusive lounge and pool access
  • Some ships feature “Infinite Ocean View” cabins with a panoramic window that slides down to create a balcony-like experience

Factors to Consider When Choosing

When deciding between an oceanview and verandah stateroom, consider the following:

  • Budget: Verandah rooms typically cost more. Is the extra expense worth it for your trip?
  • Itinerary: Will you be cruising somewhere with stunning scenery? A verandah might be more valuable in Alaska than in the Caribbean.
  • Length of cruise: For longer sailings, having private outdoor space can be a nice perk.
  • Time in the room: If you plan to be out and about most of the time, a less expensive oceanview might suffice.
  • Season and weather: A verandah is more enjoyable in warm climates.
  • Ship activities: If the ship has a lot of outdoor spaces and activities, you might not need a private balcony.
  • Personal preferences: Do you value privacy and quiet time? A verandah might be worth the splurge.

For a detailed analysis of the different cabin categories, please refer to our articles on Inside Stateroom vs. Oceanview Stateroom and Deluxe Stateroom vs. Deluxe Family Stateroom .

Our Family’s Experience

Our family has experienced both oceanview and verandah staterooms on various cruises. On our first three-night Disney cruise to the Bahamas, we opted for an oceanview stateroom to save money on shore excursions and other onboard experiences. The large porthole was perfect for our kids to watch sail away and provided plenty of natural light.

For our 7-night Alaska cruise, however, we splurged on a verandah room. It was absolutely worth it to step outside and take in the breathtaking glaciers and wildlife from the privacy of our own balcony. Plus, the extra space was a lifesaver with two energetic kids! That said, the verandah can be surprisingly windy, which isn’t ideal on a “glacier day” when it’s extra cold.

From our experience, when deciding between oceanview vs. verandah staterooms, we’ve found it helpful to consider factors like the itinerary, the length of the cruise, and how much time we plan to spend in our room.

On shorter trips where we’re busy with ship activities, an oceanview stateroom has been more than enough. But for longer voyages or scenic destinations, we’ve found that splurging on a verandah is well worth it for the extra space and private outdoor views.

For example, during themed Disney Cruises like “Halloween on the High Seas,” which our kids absolutely loved, there was so much to do that we barely spent time in our room!

The Bottom Line: Oceanview vs. Verandah

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to choosing between an oceanview and verandah stateroom. Both options have their merits, and the best choice depends on your budget, itinerary, and personal preferences.

If you’re still unsure, consider these final thoughts:

  • Oceanview rooms are a great “middle ground” between inside and verandah staterooms.
  • Verandah rooms offer more flexibility and can enhance your overall cruise experience.
  • Remember to factor in any cruise line promotions—sometimes, you can snag a verandah for close to an oceanview price!
  • Consider splitting the difference on longer cruises by booking a few nights in an oceanview and a few in a verandah.
  • For more helpful hints, see our Best Disney Cruise Ship for Kids , How to Save on Disney Cruises , and the Best Time to Take Disney Cruises .

Remember, no matter which stateroom type you choose, you’re in for a magical experience. From enjoying the delicious Food on Disney Cruises to participating in exciting onboard activities, your cruise vacation will be filled with lasting memories.

Cruise ship room service: A line-by-line guide to in-cabin dining

Kristy Tolley

There are few better places to be when hunger strikes than on a cruise ship. If the buffet is busy with people or packed away, 24-hour room service is always available to fill your belly. It's one of the greatest cruising amenities that's uniformly offered on all major cruise lines. No need to dress up for dinner — just order food, flip on your cabin TV and wait for your meal to arrive.

Wondering what you can order and how much it will cost you? Here's a line-by-line overview of room service options and pricing across the major cruise lines, along with in-cabin dining menus.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

How do I order room service on a cruise ship?

Just pick up your in-cabin phone and dial the room service number to order food. Easy!

Some cruise lines offer the option to order your food and drinks through your in-cabin TV or a smartphone app, which populates photos of the menu items. Some cruise line apps even have location-specific features that allow you to order food and drinks for delivery almost anywhere on the ship.

Breakfast is often ordered by filling out a pre-printed menu card left in your cabin and hanging it outside your door before you go to bed. Crew members collect the orders during the night and deliver your food the next morning at the time you specified.

What types of food can I order to my cabin?

Many cruise lines offer a complimentary continental breakfast delivery, which typically includes pastries, bread, fruit, yogurt and coffee and tea. You can order hot breakfast items like eggs, pancakes and bacon, but they cost extra on select lines or in specific cabin categories.

After breakfast service ends in the late morning, all major cruise lines offer an all-day room service menu of salads, sandwiches, snacks and desserts. Most cruise lines have special in-room dining menus separate from what you'd find that day on the buffet or in the main dining room.

However, some of the more upscale lines and some select concierge cabin classes offer comprehensive in-suite dining menus, often with the convenience of ordering off the menu from the main dining room or specialty restaurants on board. This elevated in-room dining experience might include a white tablecloth setup and your meal delivered course by course to your cabin or suite.

You can access additional specialty food experiences from room service operations. These include fresh pizza delivery as seen on Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises, a cutting-edge app feature for Champagne delivery on Virgin Voyages and lobster and caviar deliveries from luxury cruise lines such as Silversea Cruises.

Is room service free on a cruise ship?

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

While most land-based hotels charge a premium for any food delivered to your room, cruise ships have a long legacy of including room service in their fares. Many cruisers' favorite amenity is the 24-hour complimentary access to generic yet classic menu items such as fresh fruit, a cheese plate or a club sandwich, not to mention continental breakfast.

Recent changes in the economics of cruising have sunset the glory days of unlimited, complimentary room service on several of the most popular cruise lines. Service fees and menus dominated by a la carte options are now the new norms across the industry.

Still, the fees are often considerably less than at comparable land-based resorts, and continental breakfast items are commonly free of charge (with the exception of MSC's lowest cabin class, which charges a per-item and service fee for breakfast service).

Related: 11 extra charges on cruise ships that will drive you nuts — and what you can do about them

How much does room service cost?

Depending on the cruise line and your cabin class, room service can be a complimentary all-inclusive service, billed per item or charged at a flat delivery fee. Most lines will offer complimentary continental breakfast options through room service with no service fee, even if other options cost extra.

Luxury lines, including Seabourn, Silversea and Regent Seven Seas Cruises, always include 24-hour room service as a standard amenity.

Delivery service fees per order can reach up to $9.95, the per-order rate currently on Norwegian Cruise Line's non-suite class cabins. A la carte prices average around $5 per item, whether that's a hot breakfast or a midday sandwich.

For example, on Carnival's new a la carte room service menu, salads cost $4 to $5 (with additional fees for adding proteins), sandwiches $5 to $7, snacks like pizza and chicken tenders $6 to $8 and dessert $3 to $5.

Do you have to tip for room service on a cruise?

On no-tipping lines, such as Seabourn and Silversea, crew members are compensated appropriately, and you do not need to tip for room service. On lines where guests are expected to tip crew members, determine first if a gratuity is automatically included in your room service order or delivery fee. If it's not, a small tip is always appreciated.

Depending on what you order and the line, you might not have the chance to sign a bill for your room service order, which could be a missed opportunity to add a tip. Come prepared with small bills to offer in appreciation of the service, as you'll find the room service staff works hard to expedite many meals around the ship.

The menu includes free items like sandwiches, minestrone soup, a salad and chocolate chip cookies. A fresh fruit basket (with five fruits) is $4.90. A service charge of $7.95 is applied to dinner menu items (think: Atlantic salmon, wings, steak and more).

The room service menu is the same for all four sailing experiences, though MSC Yacht Club suites incur no fee for any room service items and room service delivery. The Fantastica and Aurea experiences include complimentary delivery.

The Margherita pizza is $6 with a $3.50 delivery fee for Bella passengers, no delivery fee for Fantastica and Aurea experience guests, and completely free for guests sailing in the Yacht Club.

norwegian cruise lines studio cabins

Room service throughout the entire Oceania Cruises fleet is included in all fares and available 24 hours a day. Passengers who purchase a Princess Plus or Princess Premier package get these two fees waived.

Princess offers a mix of complimentary and a la carte menu items on its room service menu. The long list of no-fee items includes staples like burgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers, fries and a fruit cup; upcharges kick in for items like shrimp cocktail ($8), pizza ($3) and an 8-ounce filet ($19).

Royal Caribbean offers 24-hour room service with complimentary continental breakfast (pastries, bread, cereals, fruit and yogurt, along with coffee and tea) served from 6 to 11 a.m. If you're looking to add a heartier entree to the order, the American breakfast option (an assortment of eggs, buttermilk pancakes, sausage and so forth) on the menu is available for a $7.95 per-order charge plus an 18% gratuity, which brings the total service fee to around $9.40.

The daily room service menu is offered from 11 to 6 a.m. with meals for all times of day, from grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch and chicken tenders for an afternoon snack to grilled salmon or rigatoni bolognese for dinner and fried chicken wings and chocolate cake for a late-night snack. Each room service order incurs a $7 delivery fee, though you can order as much food as you like. Certain items (such as specialty coffee, alcoholic beverages and fresh orange juice) carry an additional a la carte fee. However, your delivery fee is waived if you order an extra-fee item.
