Ratings and reviews

Location and contact.

Full menu TheFork – Leonard de Vinci

Although located in the top tourist zone near the Plumereau square, this is not a typical tourist place. The service was attentive and personalized. I was about to give them 4 after the foie gras starter (not properly chilled and a bit too little pieces),... but both our main courses turned out ecellent and innovative, as well as the creme brullee. The menus were priced reasonably for the quality, however the wines seemed a bit overpriced. More

Hello, Thank you for your visit and this review. We hope you had a good stay in Loire Valley. See you soon maybe

The enthusiastic and energetic young people waiting at table in this busy touristy restaurant cannot compensate for the lamentably dull and unimaginative cuisine. This isn’t really an Italian restaurant in my estimation. Service, once it got going, was pacy. The food though is pretty terrible.... Tours is a beautiful, happening, sophisticated city with lots of interesting places to eat - this place’s rating is not justified. You can do better…. More

Italian, but really French... We had the shrimp appetizer with fried zucchini sticks, it was, quite good but arrabiatta sauce on the side was bland... Our mains were the tagliatelle with black truffle and pan fried fois Gras and the beef filet with pasta...both were... very good, though the pasta with the beef was lacking flavor and underseasoned, but the beef was flavorful and perfectly cooked! The tiramisu was very nicely done! The service was great and the staff was very friendly! It was a bit expensive at 106€, including a bottle of wine and a coffee. More

We had diner tonight.Nevertheless we had a reservation and there were other free tables on the ground floor they proposed us a table at the first floor. We refused a were seated on the ground floor between kitchen and stairway.Later people came in without reservation and... were seated at much better places. I had as dish back of cod which had no tast a d was served without side dish, only bread.Nor potatoes nor rice was served. I can not recommend this restaurant. More

We had dinner in this place, located in the heart of Tours downtown. With a glance at the menu, we immediately spotted very limited choices in dishes, but as we were already seated, still decided to give it a go. The food was ok but... could have been subtle in some cases. For example, my creamy risotto had an unnecessary tomato sauce around it. On the opposite side, my mix of fried veggies contained only zucchini. I would pick another Italian for our next visit to Tours. More

We visited Leonard de Vinci restaurant while we were in the area. We did not actually sit down to eat, but we were interested as we had heard some good recommendations. The place looked really lovely and the staff seemed friendly and professional. The menu... looked interesting and the prices, while not cheap, were around the mid range. We intended coming back for a meal, unfortunately, however, in the end we were unable to return. Perhaps on our next visit to Tours. More

restaurant leonardo da vinci tours france

First, the restaurant staff are fun and helpful. Definitely the best we had in Tours. One of the meals of pasta with shrimp and scallops was the best we've had during this trip to Europe. The cod dish was good but not of the same... excellence. The wine prices are relatively good. The seating is intimate and I am so glad we tried it out during our last night in Tours--just wished we had gone sooner. Considering some of the crap served in the nearby restaurants, da Vinci shined. More

Had dinner in this restaurant based on TA reviews. Gosh, I'd never had worse pasta. Both pasta dishes that we had were stale, tasteless and mushy. we gave up after having have less than one-fifth of them. The waitress looked surprised when removing our plates... but nothing was asked so we did not say anything. The assorted platter that we had for starter was edible though. For €60 this is an awful meal. More

Good but not super. Nothing special. Tasty ingredients but a bit ‘outdated’ dishes and presentation. Correct but a bit too ‘cold’ service. Too expensive in comparison with other places in the area.A typical tourist place , we should have known. For once a bit misled... by TripAdvisor... More

Mrs, first of all, we thank you for your visit and for the fact that we have succeeded in serving you something good. It is true that, being a "maitre restaurateur", we work with fresh products, and that it takes time and hands to do... More

We ate here with a large group from Gate 1 Travel. The food was very good, but the servers struggled with the size of our group. The staff was very friendly and we enjoyed our evening. The restaurant has a good location close to Place... Plumereau. More

Hello sir, Thank you for your opinion and your visit. We take note of your comment on the service (one of our waiters was sick that day and we could not replace it) Sorry for this inconvenience. We hope that you will keep fantastic memories... More

My husband and I dined at Leonard de Vinci for our last night in Tours. We were warmly received and treated likewise for the remainder of our meal. I have to highlight the antipasti for two...it was amazing (and a lot of food). For our... main meal, I had the chicken with risotto while my husband had the Chianti steak...both delicious and well prepared. We arrived early (19:00 reservation), so we had the pick of tables. The restaurant filled up quickly, though, and all tables were full by the time we left. More

Madam, Thank you for your visit and for your nice comment. we are delighted to see you have enjoyed the time with us. It was a real pleasure to meet you. Maybe see you next time

food not french. pasta, shish kabob, salad no frogs legs or steamed mussels. service decent. house wine average. timbered ceiling, tiny wooden steps inside wood and wattle outer bldg. a treat to be in a renaissance restaurant. worth a picture. great ambiance

Delicious Italian dishes served in a lovely setting just off the main square in the historic district. Reservations are highly recommended as this is a popular place.

Amboise is a delightful chateau to visit with children who are interested in Leonardo's inventions displayed inside and especially excited by those outside on which they can crawl in, on, under and through without anyone hushing them. It is a refreshing departure from other chateaux... and museums. Knowing Leonardo lived here is exciting. Watching young visitors here is delightful. The cafe on the grounds provides a pleasant place to sip a cup of coffee. Carefulcarole More

I would like to say something bad about this restaurant, however I'm too busy to eat their gourmet food at a very affordable prices with their perfect service! If you are in Tours, this restaurant is a must!!

Explore France’s Loire Valley in the Footsteps of Leonardo da Vinci

Five centuries after his death, visitors can pay homage to the artist at these sites in central France where he spent his final years

Château de Chambord

Most think of Leonardo da Vinci as being geographically tied to Italy, and for good reason. The visionary artist and scientist spent the majority of his life there. He was born in Vinci, Italy, in 1452. When he was about 15 years old, Leonardo began an apprenticeship with painter, sculptor and goldsmith Andrea del Verrochio in Florence, and joined the city's painters' guild. He spent most of his career in Florence and Milan— studying, seeking to attain perfection through his painting (though it's known that he never felt he had achieved this with the "Mona Lisa"), and inventing contraptions like his f lying m achine.

However, in 1515, the king of France, Francis I, came to visit Lyons and was greeted by a walking mechanical lion Leonardo built. The king was so impressed that in 1516, he invited Leonardo to come live on the property of his castle in the Loire Valley, where the polymath spent the last three years leading up to his death on May 2, 1519.

During his final years in France, Leonardo's interests focused on engineering and architecture, working at the request of the king on projects ranging from a hunting lodge to a completely contained new capital city. Although many of Leonardo's grandest designs were never fully executed, visitors to the Loire Valley's vineyard-covered landscapes can still see imprints of the artist's genius 500 years later.

Château du Clos Lucé

When Leonardo moved to France upon invitation from the king, he took up residence at the Château du Clos Lucé , a mansion on the grounds of the Château d'Amboise, where King Francis I lived. Leonardo lived the remaining three years of his life in this home, walking through an underground tunnel to see the king—who called Leonardo "father"—in the main residence on the property. The artist brought three paintings with him from Italy to his new French home: the " Mona Lisa ," " The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne " and " St. John the Baptist ," all of which are now on display at the Louvre. He died in his bedroom in 1519 at age 67 from complications of recurrent strokes.

Today, the mansion has been restored to the way it appeared during Leonardo’s stay there, including his bedroom, his basement studio, the original frescoes on the walls and the high stone hearth in the kitchen. Leonardo particularly loved the colorful stained glass throughout the house. The basement houses about 40 3D models created from his blueprints, and the garden at the property has full-scale representations of some of his inventions, like his assault chariot, aerial screw and revolving bridge.

Château de Chambord

Château de Chambord

Leonardo would never see the final completion of the Château de Chambord ; construction was just beginning the year he died. It’s theorized by historians and Leonardo scholars, though, that he designed at least part of the castle. Tanaka Hidemichi, a French and Italian art historian at Tohoku University in Japan, notes that though original plans by Leonardo have never been found and French updates to the castle have obscured some of the architectural history, the footprint of the building is undeniably a Leonardo design. Hidemichi and other scholars point to the building's double helix staircase flanked by identical apartments as examples of the mathematical elegance that hallmarks nearly all of Leonardo’s work.

Visitors today can explore the castle and formal French gardens by foot, or tour the grounds by boat, bike or horse-drawn carriage. Horse and bird shows are also held regularly on site.

Romorantin

Romorantin was a massive undertaking for Leonardo and King Francis I. The king hired Leonardo to design the entire town, creating an ideal utopian city that he expected to become the capital of France. The project —consisting of a canal with water diverted from a Loire tributary, a royal palace, gardens, water mills, irrigated farmland, sewers and suburbs—was never realized. The king put his efforts and energy elsewhere (into the castle at Chambord) as Leonardo’s health began to fail.

Although visitors won’t see the fruition of the pair’s grand plans, Romorantin is still a picturesque town with shops, wilderness activities, restaurants and museums.

Château d'Amboise

Château d'Amboise

The Château d'Amboise is the main estate on the grounds where Leonardo lived out the remainder of his years; the artist’s home was less than 1,000 feet away. From the 1400s to the 1800s, the castle was a royal residence; now it’s a tourism draw with the castle, the gardens, the towers and the underground areas open to visitors.

Leonardo’s tomb is on the grounds, as well. In the early 19th century, much of the palace was demolished, including a chapel and graveyard where Leonardo laid at rest per his wishes. About 100 years later, some bones were discovered on the property that are allegedly Leonardo’s. They were ultimately moved into a tomb in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert, in the castle gardens, marked by a concrete slab with his name, a disc embossed with his portrait and a plaque describing why his bones are there, rather than at the destroyed site.

Visit Clos Lucé – Leonardo da Vinci’s Home in Amboise

Leonardo da Vinci spent his final three years in Amboise in a chateau now housing a museum with models of his designs.

Leonardo's dream of flight

Château du Clos Lucé is a relatively small 15 th -century palace in the Loire town Amboise. The chateau was the childhood home of King Francis I but much more famously the palace where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final three years as the guest of the king of France. Clos Lucé is a museum on the life and work of Leonardo da Vinci. Apart from period furniture, many models of his designs are on display. A large landscaped garden is not only a pleasure to stroll in but has further models, art, and civil engineering works inspired by Leonardo da Vinci.

Leonardo da Vinci in Amboise

Leonardo da Vinci accepted an invitation from French King Francois I (1494-1547, crowned 1515) to live and work in France. From 1516 to 1519, Da Vinci lived in Château du Cloux (now Clos Lucé) close to the royal castle of Amboise in the Loire Valley.

Clos Lucé

In contrast to other “guests” of France, e.g. the King of Spain at Chateau de Valencay during the reign of Napoleon, Leonardo da Vinci came willingly to Clos Lucé where he was free to explore his interests and art. He received a generous pension free of any specific responsibilities.

He frequently met with the young king, who could access Clos Lucé via a 400-m underground passage from the royal Chateau d’Amboise. Da Vinci possibly designed the double-helix staircase of Chateau de Chambord and completed major artworks while in Amboise.

Touring Close Lucé with Leonardo da Vinci Museum

Clos Lucé

Clos Lucé, a 15 th -century chateau built on 12 th -century foundations, now houses a museum dedicated mostly to the life and work of Leonardo da Vinci. Most of the artworks are copies while the furniture date from the period but are not originally from the specific palace.

Visitors enter the small chateau via a Renaissance gallery that gives lovely views of the garden and the pink brick and white tufa stone chateau. Note the Gothic elements on the façade including a statue of St Sebastian – the patron saint of archers – above the coat of arms of France.

Clos Lucé

On the first floor of Château du Clos Lucé is the bedroom in which Leonardo da Vinci died on May 2, 1519. According to tradition King Francois I was at his side. Also on this floor is the bedroom of Marguerite de Navarre – the sister of Francois. The siblings spent much of their childhood in this chateau under the care of their mother Louise of Savoy.

Clos Lucé

Back on the ground floor is a chapel with frescoes by Da Vinci’s pupils, an 18 th -century salon, a Renaissance great hall, and the kitchens. All are furnished with period items and tapestries.

In the basement of the chateau are several working models of Leonardo da Vinci’s designs, which ranged from engines of war to civil engineering equipment. More small-scale models can be seen in a special exhibition room entered via Leonardo’s garden.

GetYourGuide

Park Leonardo da Vinci in Amboise

Several further models can be enjoyed in the large landscape park at Clos Lucé, which is open during the warmer months only. In this park, around 20 further models and exhibitions explore the ideas of Leonardo da Vinci.

Clos Lucé

Once again, several themes are covered to show just why Da Vinci was the ultimate Renaissance man, interested in everything around him. In a pond, a double-deck bridge shows his idea to improve traffic and hygiene in cities – commercial traffic on the lower level and high society on top.

Clos Lucé

Da Vinci had an interest in designing military equipment and ideas modeled in the garden include a tank, machine gun, and island of war. Children can try to lift water with an Archimedes screw, turn the helicopter and paddle wheel.

Paddleboats on the pond in summer give the most fun that can be had in this touristic region of France for €2.

Several artworks and ideas of Da Vinci are demonstrated in the park on large panels with a few audio descriptions. The dream of flight machine hangs in high trees.

In the park is the Museographic Hall (extra charge) with an exhibition of Leonardo’s activities especially his life in France. It is worth the added expense, especially for family tickets where the surcharge is minimal.

Visiting Clos Lucé and Leonardo da Vinci Park

Opening hours of clos lucé.

Chateau du Clos Lucé is open daily year-round except on December 25 and January 1.

Opening hours depend on the season. The chateau opens at 9 am (10 am in January) and closes at 18:00 from November to January; 20:00 in July and August; and 19:00 the rest of the year.

Admission Tickets for Clos Lucé

Clos Lucé

Ticket prices for the chateau are €15 (€10.50 for children 7 to 18) and €42 for a family of four (add around €4 for additional children). In winter (mid-November to February) much of the park is closed and the tickets are slightly cheaper. (Exhibitions in the Museographic Hall have an additional charge.)

The admission price for Clos Lucé is generally higher than for other larger chateaux in the Loire region. However, the displays are interesting and the park a pleasure to explore in fine weather. Families receive good discounts.

Clos Lucé

The paddle boats in the pond are built to Leonardo da Vinci’s designs – expect to get a bit wet. The ten-minute or so paddle cost only €2 for a group of 4 / 5. The paddleboats operate in the afternoons in July and August and some vacation days and weekends in May.

Tickets for Clos Lucé can be bought at the chateau or  online  but the mobile app is probably more useful than the online ticket offer.

Up to three restaurants or tearooms are open in the park at Clos Lucé. Picnicking is also allowed in a dedicated area next to a large playground for smaller children.

Transportation to Chateau du Clos Lucé

Château du Clos Lucé – Parc Leonardo da Vinci is at 2 rue du Clos Lucé – 37400 Amboise, around 400 m from the Chateau d’Amboise in the old town of Amboise to the south of Loire River. From the old town or Amboise castle, walk down Rue Victor Hugo.

Chateau d'Amboise

Amboise can easily be reached by car from other Loire towns and chateaux such as Chenonceau (20 min) or Chambord (an hour). Close Lucé has a small parking lot but any other parking area in Amboise town center is within walking distance.

By train, Amboise can be reached from Paris in around 1h30 to 2h10. The direct intercity train from Paris Austerlitz takes around 1h40 and is the best value and easiest (but infrequent). Intercity trains via Orleans cost the same but take just over two hours.

More frequent connections are available by taking a TGV (reservation compulsory) from Paris Montparnasse and changing to a TER train at Saint Pierre des Corps (near Tours). Traveling times should be around 1h30 but double the price of regular trains.

The train station of Amboise (Gare SNCF) is on the north bank of the Loire River. The walk from the station to the old town – cross over the old Loire Bridge towards the Chateau d’Amboise – is just over a kilometer and around half a kilometer further to Clos Lucé. Buses also run from the station to the old town.

An alternative is to take a day-trip bus tour from Paris to Amboise – Get Your Guide list several possibilities that include visits to Clos Lucé, usually in combination with Chenonceau and Chambord .

More

More

Loire Valley Cultural Heritage Villages and Countryside With Family

Visitez les châteaux de la Loire, tel qu'Amboise

Reading time: 0 min Published on 21 June 2023, updated on 15 April 2024

The Loire Valley has a wide range of holiday offers for families. Discover the châteaux in a playful way, enjoy a break on a farm in the countryside or have a bike ride along the Loire. A range of great family-friendly accommodation is the icing on the cake!

Have fun at the châteaux

Many of the châteaux in the Loire Valley offer entertaining tours ideal for children. At the Château Musée de Villesavin, kids can discover all aspects of country life with a mini farm. The Château de Meung-sur-Loire and the Fortress of Montbazon offer numerous historical activities and workshops where children can learn about medieval crafts and games. The inventions of Leonardo da Vinci await you at the Château du Clos-Lucé, while comic book fans can follow in the footsteps of Tintin at the Château de Cheverny and discover the 'Château de Moulinsart'. Visitors of all ages can challenge themselves with an escape game at La Ferté Saint-Aubin, La Bussière, the Royal Fortress of Chinon or the Royal Château of Blois.

The Loire Valley chateaux for families

A full-scale summer camp

Of course, family attractions in the Loire Valley aren't just about châteaux. Water babies will love the area's water parks, lakes and leisure centres offering various water sports. A clamber along the rope course is also ideal for letting off steam. We also recommend a horse-drawn carriage or donkey ride if the kids love animals. The Parc des Mini-Châteaux in Amboise, the Goupillères cave valley and the Maison de la Magie in Blois are other original options for excursions as a family.

Family activities in the Loire Valley

By bike or segway

Discover the Loire Valley on two wheels! For excursions in the big cities, but also in small towns or in the vineyards, you can book segway tours. Cyclists can choose from many routes in the Loire Valley: the Loire à Vélo is perhaps the best known, and perfectly suited to families. To discover the main tourist attractions of the area, we also recommend the Châteaux à Vélo and L'Indre à Vélo cycle networks.

Cycling in the Loire Valley

The Loire's delicious dishes

The Loire Valley offers lip-smacking foodie experiences for young and old. At Max Vauché, children can take part in chocolate-making workshops and take their creations home. Head to the Biscuiterie de Chambord or Atelier Saint-Michel near Chambord for biscuits and madeleines. To cheese lovers, we recommend the five types of goats' cheese from the area, each with a Protected Designation of Origin. You can find out more about their production by visiting a farm like Ferme Cabri au Lait or La Cabinette. At the Saute-Mouton organic farm, kids can learn more about the life of an organic farmer. And did you know that mushroom growing plays an important role in the Loire Valley? The mushroom beds in the local caves can be an interesting stop for families.

Foodie family activities

Unusual or quirky family accommodation

Looking for a slightly different kind of hotel to make your Loire Valley stay unforgettable? Many campsites and other service providers offer a wide choice of unusual accommodation, from treehouses and ecolodges to caravans, yurts, teepees and even caves. What takes your fancy?
