About the Golconda Fort

Originally recognized as Mankal, this fortress served as the capital of the medieval sultanate under the Qutb Shahi dynasty. Renowned for its mines, this region has yielded some of the world’s most famous diamonds, including the Koh-i-Noor, Hope Diamond, Nassak Diamond, and Noor-ul-Ain. The fortress city enclosed within these historic walls was particularly renowned for its diamond trade. At the pinnacle of the fort lies the Mahankali temple, adding a spiritual dimension to this historical gem.

Were you aware that three towns in the United States of America (USA) are named after Golconda Fort?

Golconda Fort, signifying “Round shaped hill,” stands proudly in Hyderabad as one of the city’s most prominent structures and landmarks. Functioning as a fortified citadel, this historical fort served as an early capital city for the Qutb Shahi dynasty.

History of Golconda Fort

Golconda Fort underwent numerous transformations under various dynasties and rulers. Initially constructed by the Kakatiyas, it was later rebuilt by Rani Rudrama Devi and her successor Prataparudra. Subsequently, control shifted to the Kamma Nayakas. The establishment of the Qutb Shahi dynasty in Golconda was credited to Sultan Quli Qutb-ul-Mulk.

Initially, the fort was a mud structure, but it underwent extensive expansion and reconstruction over time, evolving from its humble origins.

About Qutb Shahi Dynasty

Sultan Quli Qutb-ul-Mulk founded the Qutb Shahi dynasty, a significant territory in South India, during the 16th century. Renowned for their architectural prowess and support for learning, the rulers of the Qutb Shahi dynasty left a lasting legacy, exemplified by iconic structures like Char Minar. The courts of these rulers were infused with Persian culture and literature, contributing to a rich cultural and intellectual environment.

How to Reach Golconda Fort?

Situated approximately 11 kilometers from Hyderabad city, Golconda Fort is conveniently accessible by road. While public buses are available for transportation, I opted to hire a taxi for the entire day, given my limited time in Hyderabad. It’s advisable to confirm with the taxi hiring company whether the driver is willing to go to the fort, as I encountered an issue in my case. Despite the pamphlet indicating the taxi would take me to the fort, the driver himself expressed reluctance, highlighting the importance of clarifying such details in advance.

I was guided by Mohammad Gafoor, an excellent guide whom I met at the fort’s entrance. He accompanied me for a comprehensive tour lasting a few hours, offering insightful perspectives on its history. With confidence and extensive knowledge, Gafoor shared numerous fascinating facts and stories. Notably, he was adept at capturing excellent photographs—a valuable asset when traveling solo.

My Experience of Visiting Golconda Fort

Every aspect of this fort captured my admiration, and I deeply wished for more time to explore its wonders. The intricacies of the fort’s construction and meticulous planning are evident in every feature, from the natural air conditioning to the bustling markets and the echoing sound that resonates from the entrance—each detail and corner revealed a marvel. Undoubtedly, Golconda Fort stands out as one of the most beautiful and historically rich places I have had the pleasure of visiting. A return visit is certainly on the horizon for me, as this remarkable fort has left an indelible mark on my travel experiences.

Is Golconda Fort Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

To be candid, traveling alone in Hyderabad requires some precautions, though it is generally safe for solo female travelers. While I didn’t encounter significant issues, I did face a challenge with my taxi driver. Despite initially agreeing to take me to the fort, he changed his stance for unknown reasons. It took some persuasion before he reluctantly agreed to transport me to the fort. Therefore, exercising caution in Hyderabad is advisable.

Beyond this incident, I didn’t encounter many problems. However, it’s important to be aware of locals who may attempt humorous or engaging conversations. Stay vigilant and mindful of your surroundings to ensure a safe and enjoyable solo travel experience in Hyderabad.

Golconda Fort: The Echo Fort

Golconda Fort is a splendid beauty and is a fortified citadel. The fort took up to 62 years to be built, and this fort is situated in Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh). Its name itself shows the specialty, the word  “Gol”  means  “Round,”  and the word  “Conda”  means  “Hill.”  The fort can be named Echoistic Fort in India. A few steps far, a wall protects the gate from the enemies who want to attack the fort in front of the main entrance. Enemies must break the main gate to enter the fort because there is only one gate.

Other than the main gate, there was a signal passing area. In the early days, the army on the primary entrance sent signals to the king by a clap. That area produces an echo sound to pass an alert signal to the whole fort. The range of that clap’s echo sound can be heard from 7km in the fort.

Main Magnetism Points of Golconda Fort

The fort has a Dance room, Judgement Hall, armoury building, etc. The exciting part of the judgment hall is that the king and the Queen never pass judgment after seeing the criminal, and they believe that if a criminal has a relationship with them, the decision will not be fair. They pass judgment only by listening to the criminal. If the criminal misbehaved in the judgment hall, the king would know by just an echo sound, i.e., if a criminal moved even a little cloth on his body.

The fort has a guest room,  a very famous idiom .  “Speak slowly; the walls also have ears.”  The guest room has that specialty of this idiom. Every wall of the guest room is connected, and In between these specialties, the fascinating designs all over the fort also give an exciting view. The fort has a make-up room for the Queen to dress up; Diwan-e-aam  and Diwan-e-Khaas  are two meeting halls. The fort has three paths to go to the meeting hall  “1. For the king to go to the meeting hall. 2. For the citizens to attend the meeting in the meeting hall. 3. For the barracks to protect the meeting hall until the meeting is to be completed.”

Golconda Fort, located in Hyderabad, India, stands as a majestic testament to the grandeur and rich history of the region. Spanning over 400 years of existence, this imposing fortress has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, and the passage of time, and remains an iconic landmark that attracts visitors from far and wide. With its impressive architecture, intricate engineering, and fascinating tales of valour, Golconda Fort continues to captivate the imagination of all who set foot within its walls.

The History of Golconda Fort :

The origins of the Golconda Fort can be traced back to the Kakatiya dynasty, which built a mud fort on this site during the 12th century. However, it was during the reign of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, in the 16th century, that the fort was transformed into the sprawling complex that we see today. The Qutb Shahi rulers, who were of Turkish origin, chose Golconda as their capital and fortified the hilltop area to protect their kingdom from invasions.

The Architecture and Design :

Golconda Fort is a magnificent example of military architecture, blending both Hindu and Islamic styles. The fort is situated on a granite hill, providing a strategic advantage in terms of defence. The outer walls of the fort, constructed with massive stones, span a length of about 7 kilometres and reach a height of up to 15 meters. These walls enclose the entire complex, which encompasses several palaces, mosques, and gateways.

One of the most notable features of Golconda Fort is its ingenious acoustics system. The Fateh Darwaza, or Victory Gate, located at the entrance of the fort, is a remarkable structure. The design of the gate is such that even a gentle clap near its opening can be heard at the highest point of the fort, located several hundred meters away. This acoustic marvel served as both a warning system and a means of communication during times of war.

The Royal Palaces :

Within the fort complex, visitors can explore the remnants of the royal palaces. The most prominent among them are the Taramati Mosque and the nearby Taramati Baradari. These structures were built for the queens and courtiers to enjoy music, dance, and other performances. Taramati Baradari, with its twelve arched doorways, served as an open pavilion, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Another significant palace within Golconda Fort is the Rani Mahal or Queen’s Palace. This palace showcases intricate stucco work, beautiful frescoes, and elegant arches. It gives visitors a glimpse into the royal lifestyle of the past, with its ornate interiors and spacious courtyards.

The Sound and Light Show :

Golconda Fort is not just a historical monument; it is also an immersive experience. The fort comes alive in the evenings with a mesmerizing Sound and Light Show that narrates the tales of its glorious past. The show, held at the amphitheatre near the Fateh Darwaza, uses advanced audio-visual technology to recreate the ambience of the bygone era. Visitors can witness the fort’s history unfolding before their eyes through a combination of dramatic lighting, sound effects, and live commentary.

Entry Fee, Timings, and Ticket Cost :

To explore the wonders of Golconda Fort, visitors need to obtain an entry ticket. As of the latest available information (September 2021), the entry fee for Indian citizens is INR 25, while foreign tourists must pay INR 300. However, it is important to note that these prices are subject to change, and it is advisable to check the official website or contact the authorities for the most up-to-date information

Originally translating to ‘Shepherd’s Hill’ in the local Telugu language, the fort was first known as Mankal and was built by a southern Indian dynasty known as the Kakatiyas, that reigned over large parts of the Deccan region.

Located atop a hill, the fort was part of the western defences of the Kakatiya kingdom and proved to be a formidable complex.

But as with everything in history, dynasties came, and dynasties went, and so was the case with the Kakatiya dynasty who were overthrown by succeeding dynasties.

Inside the fort

The Golconda Fort changed hands and ownership over the centuries, with several battles fought, lost, and won by different armies and kingdoms.

The last dynasty to rule from the fort, before it finally fell to ruins, was the Qutb-Shahi Dynasty, who took the fort to greater heights and expanded the fort complex.

It eventually fell from glory when it was besieged by the Mughal dynasty in 1687, after a famed eight-month-long siege.

A jewel amid jewels!

Apart from being a formidable fortified citadel, Golconda Fort was also renowned for being home to some of the world’s biggest and most expensive jewels.

The fort was known to have a vault that housed renowned diamonds like the Kohinoor and the Hope Diamonds!

There were quite a few diamond mines around the fort, especially in the area of the Krishna River valley, and at that time, India was home to the only known diamond mines in the world.

And of course, this added to the fort’s fame, and was an added feather in its cap!

Ever thought of what a 182-carat diamond or 148 carats diamond felt or looked like?

These rare jewels are now housed in museums around the world, while the Kohinoor diamond sits embedded in the Queen of England’s crown!

So what’s all the fuss about, apart from diamonds!

Listed as an archaeological treasure, the fort is actually made up of four smaller forts, surrounded by a 6.2-mile long outer wall.

That’s the very first sight that hits you when viewing the fort from a distance – the long boundary wall surrounding the fort.

About Golconda Fort

Golconda Fort

The history of Golconda Fort basically sums up the history of Hyderabad for centuries. With every rise and fall of this majestic fort, the city also has witnessed the various political and cultural developments that form an integral part of its golden history.

The foundation of the fort is said to have been laid by the Kakatiya dynasty in the 12th-century. Over the centuries, the fort was under the control of several dynasties such as Musunuri Kapaya Nayaka, Bahmani Sultanate, Qutub Shahi dynasty and the Mughal Empire. Each of the ruling dynasties contributed to the architecture of this fortress to make it one of the most awe-inspiring structures that stands in the city. The fort, however, slowly rose to prominence under the Bahmani Sultanate and reached the pinnacle of glory during the Qutub Shahi reign.

History

Golconda

According to ancient folklore, a shepherd discovered an idol in the region (now famous as Golconda Fort). Also, soon after the discovery, the Kakatiyan king came to know about the same, and he ordered the construction of a mud fort around the found idol. The fortress became renowned as “Golla Konda”, implying Shepherd’s Hill in Telugu language. In addition, the Golconda fort was constructed in the 11th century under the Kakatiya Dynasty.

Nevertheless, it rose to prestige when it came under the control of the Qutub Shahi Dynasty during the late 16th century, i.e. when the ruler of the Qutub Shahi Dynasty declared his freedom from the Bahmani Sultanate in the late 15h century. The remarkable fort since then has grown from a mud fort to a towering structure with a 10 km exterior fence. After a failed try in the 16th century, the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb was finally able to invade the impenetrable fort after a prolonged nine-month blockade.

Golconda Fort Architecture

Golconda Fort is a magnificent structure constructed on a cliff of 400 feet with a rim of 7 km portraying the stunning combination of Hindu-Islamic architecture. The study walls of the Golconda fort comprise 87 bastions and eight gates, each running 50-60 feet. In addition, there are three strong straight fortification partitions, each within the other that made the fort impenetrable at that time. The main line of the wall comprises the town, and the second row is a dual border that drives around the ground of the hill on which the fort stands.

Likewise, the spectacular fort is well-known for its parade grounds, exquisite apartments, multiple galleries and mosques. Amongst the eight entrances, Fateh Darwaza is the primary gate as the victorious procession of King Aurangzeb cruised through it. This entryway is 13ft broad, 25ft extended and constructed of steel tips to guard it against elephants. On the other hand, the Balahisar Darwaza, constructed using the Nawabi culture and style, is another marvellous structure. However, now, only the eastern entrance is open for sightseers.

The hidden subsurface tunnel rumoured to have linked the durbar atop the hill situated at the base acts as an escape path for the royals in times of danger and crisis though widely believed is yet to be discovered. Moreover, people also believe that the queens have many superstitions about mirrors and their impact on the face and instead chose clear water pits to check reflections. Golconda Fort: Check Timings, Entry Ticket, & Location Details

Golconda Fort is one of the many historical monuments in Hyderabad. It is located on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The origins of the Golconda Fort can be traced back to the 11th century.

This fortress ruin consists of four distinct forts with a 10 km long outer wall, eight gateways, and four drawbridges, with a number of royal apartments and halls, temples, mosques, stables, etc. inside.

The architecture of Golconda Fort is awe-inspiring. The carvings and designs made at every corner of the fortress speak of its royal Ness. Standing at the top part of the fort, a full view of Hyderabad city can be seen.

Golconda Fort

This historical site has a unique acoustic feature that has been described as an “Amazing Clapping Telephone”. At a certain point below the fateh darwazan “Victory Gate”, a hand clap at that point below the dome reverberates and can be heard clearly at the ‘Bala Hisar’ pavilion, the highest point almost a kilometer away.

This worked as a warning in case of an attack. You can experience this magical effect on your own at the fort. The best season to visit the fort is in monsoon season, as the mansion requires long walks, which is tiresome in summer. And the most recommended time is that evening to enjoy the beautiful view of the sunset from the top and you can also attend the sound and light show at night.

Golconda Fort was first fortified by Kakatiya dynasty on a granite hill and the walls were made of mud. The forts had changed many hands, from Kakatiyas to the Munusuri Nayaks, to the Bahamani Sultans. Breaking away from the Bahamani Sultanate, Sultan Quli Qutb-ul-Mulk strengthens the fortress to what we see today. After eight years of being under siege by the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, the fort fell to the Mughal Empire.

The show is presented in three languages: English, Hindi, and Telugu. 2 shows are placed in a day. The show in Hindi is conducted with a voice-over of Bollywood living legend Amitabh Bachchan and Jagjit Singh’s mellifluous ghazals. The timings for the show differ according to the season.

The fort was originally known as Mankal and it was built on a hilltop in 1143. The Golconda Fort Hyderabad Telangana was originally a mud fort under the regime of Rajah of Warangal. The Golconda fort history depicts that it was fortified between 14th and 17th centuries by the Qutub Shahi dynasty and Bahmani Sultans.

The inner area of the fort contains the ruins of mosques, palaces, and a hilltop pavilion. No doubt the Golconda history leaves you spellbound and amaze you with the stories behind it as it is amongst the magnificent fortresses in India.

The history of the Golconda fort takes you back to the 13th century to the ruling time of Kaktiyas which was followed by the Qutb Shahi dynasty. The fort rests on the 120-meter high granite hilltop and it is surrounded by huge crenulated ramparts.

The fort was known as Shepherd’s hill which actually means Golla Konda in Telugu. According to the legends, the shepherd boy came across an idol on this huge hill. And this information was brought into the consideration of ruling Kaktiyas at that time.

Thus, the ruling king constructed the mud fort surrounding the holy spot. Later on, the Qutub Shahi dynasty converted the mud fort into a massive granite fort by extending its circumference by 5 km.

Golconda in Telugu means ‘shepherd’s hill’, meaning Golla Konda, which according to local legend was about a boy who came across an idol here. The Kakatiya king then constructed a mud fort here, which was later taken over by the Bahamani kings.

The structure that you see today is built by the Qutub Shahi kings as they converted the mud fort into a massive granite fort extending 5 km in circumference. It was in 1687 when Mughal emperor Aurangzeb took over the Golconda and left it in ruins.
