2018 Opel Insignia Grand Sport 2.0 CDTI 170 AWD Dynamic review – Going upscale without paying a premium

Specced properly, the Opel Insignia Grand Sport can make a compelling alternative to a premium family car

Overall Score 83/100

2018-Opel-Insignia-Grand-Sport-2.0-CDTI-AWD-Dynamic-0

Premium car manufacturers are doing better than ever thanks to the market's insatiable appetite for upmarket cars, whatever the segment.

But luxury automakers are thriving at the expense of mass-market carmakers, pushing the latter to release upscale versions of their models in a bid to stop or at least curb their customers' exodus to premium brands. In recent years, we've witnessed the arrival of premium sub-brands such as Ford's Vignale, Renault's Initiale Paris, and Buick's Avenir. Mind you, some manufacturers even went on to establish standalone premium marques as PSA did with DS and Hyundai with Genesis.

Opel hasn't jumped on any of those bandwagons, but that doesn't mean the PSA-owned automaker doesn't want a piece of the action. Look at the brand's current flagship model, the second-generation Insignia Grand Sport. It's arguably the best-looking car in the segment thanks to its coupé-like profile, harmonious proportions, and flowing lines, and it marks the introduction of many sophisticated technologies and features that not long ago were exclusive to premium cars.

Add to that the fact that it's now lighter than before, as well as more fun to drive, refined, and luxurious, and it makes you wonder whether it is the best way to get your hands on the equivalent of a premium car for a massive discount. Particularly since the (almost) fully-loaded Insignia 2.0 CDTI AWD Dynamic we tested costs about the same as an entry-level premium sedan in a similar powertrain configuration.

While on paper this sounds enticing, I was curious to see whether this generously-specced Insignia was closer to premium or mainstream. Its name certainly conveys premium aspirations, so let's see whether that holds true.

BANG FOR THE BUCK:

Powertrain 8/10.

The car we sampled featured the strongest turbodiesel engine you can get this side of an Insignia GSi: a 2.0-liter unit that delivers 170 hp at 3,750 rpm and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque from 1,750 rpm to 2,500 rpm. It's a great engine that feels lively and revs quickly all the way up to almost 5,000 rpm.

It's also pretty refined: you do hear it, but it lacks the annoying clatter some oil burners have. In this car, it's hooked to a six-speed manual gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring. While the six-speed box is precise and exploits the engine's torque curve remarkably well, it comes with a hard clutch pedal that is tiresome to use around town.

That's why I believe the optional eight-speed automatic suits the refined character of this car much better. Not to mention that the auto makes the Insignia almost one second quicker from 0-100 km/h (8.9 seconds compared to 9.7 seconds) — despite the curious fact that you can't have it with AWD on this engine (you need to step up to the 210-hp biturbo diesel for that). Another reason why I would choose the automatic is the better integration with the adaptive cruise control and parking assist systems.

Handling 8/10

I've got one word for those of you interested in buying an Insignia: FlexRide. That's the name of the optional adaptive chassis that is a must-have on this car because it completely transforms the driving experience, making the car much more versatile.

There are three settings for the adaptive dampers, steering feel, and throttle response: the Standard mode that adapts to your driving style and road conditions, the comfort-oriented Tour, and Sport. The latter setting needs no explaining: activate it, and you'll immediately feel the Insignia flex its muscles. The engine responds as if all of a sudden more horses have joined the stable, the steering becomes firmer, and the dampers stiffen up so that you can go faster through turns. While the 4.9-meter long, nearly 1.7-tonne heavy Insignia is no small car, it feels light and nimble in corners for its size.

There's something else the Sport mode modifies, and that's activating a more dynamic setting of the AWD system with torque vectoring. What that does is keep you on track at cornering speeds you wouldn't think possible in a car like this. When you overdo it and enter a corner too fast, you might feel something strange happening with the rear axle. Don't worry, that's torque vectoring in action sending higher torque to the outside rear wheel to improve turn-in and exit speeds. This system helps make the car more stable and keeps understeer in check.

Safety 10/10

Euro NCAP put the Opel Insignia Grand Sport through its complex crash test procedure and found it to be very safe. The five-door liftback received five stars overall, with a 93-percent rating for adult occupant protection, 85 percent for child occupant protection, 78 percent for pedestrian protection, and 69 percent for safety assist systems.

That's an excellent score that places the Insignia very close to the top of its class, with only the VW Arteon and Kia Stinger faring better in Euro NCAP's 2017 safety ranking. Standard safety systems include autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, and cruise control with speed limiter. Our test car featured far more safety enhancing systems, though, with the most important being the excellent IntelliLux LED Matrix adaptive headlights, Head-Up display, adaptive cruise control, parking assistant, 360-degree camera, and more.

Comfort 9/10

In Tour mode, the FlexRide chassis is equally competent at making the Insignia a comfortable cruiser as it is at sharpening its responses in Sport Mode. Press the Tour button on the center console and you'll feel the car relax: the suspension becomes softer than before, the steering wheel easier to turn, and the throttle response more laid back.

That is the way to travel if you want to cover long distances in the Insignia in comfort. The ride quality is cushy in Tour mode, but you do feel slight shudders when going over nasty bumps and potholes. I guess that has something to do with our car's optional 18-inch wheels shod with 245/45 tires — I imagine the standard 17-inch alloys with 225/55 rubber provide an even smoother ride.

The optional AGR-approved, leather-wrapped seats would deserve a chapter of their own but they're surely the most comfortable seats I've sat on in a non-premium car: they're heated, ventilated, and feature a soothing massage function on the driver's side. Furthermore, they literally hug you, thanks to the backrest's adjustable bolsters. The driving position is superb.

Noise levels are below average (which is good), but I would have liked to hear the engine less: after all, it's just a diesel four-pot. Wind noise is subtle most of the time, as is tire noise — you only hear it when driving over rough road surfaces.

Quality 8/10

Specced like this, the Insignia is as close to premium as it gets. The Brownstone perforated leather upholstery looks and feels better than what you get in some luxury cars. Mind you, these leather seats alone cost almost €4,000. The soft, grippy leather on the flat-bottomed sports steering wheel offers a pleasant tactile experience as well.

The plastics found in the upper half of the cabin are nice and soft, and the harder material found lower down isn't unpleasant either. However, a two-tone dashboard would improve the cabin's appearance — don't worry, Opel offers that as an option. Build quality is solid, with some minor exceptions: a center console panel that felt a bit flimsy on our test car and a squeaky wiper stalk (maybe it needed some greasing). Thankfully I didn't hear any rattles inside, even though the press car had covered more than 17,000 kilometers — which is the equivalent of a much higher mileage under regular use.

Opel also deserves praise for how its designers integrated the infotainment system's touchscreen into the dash. It's refreshing to see an automaker bucking the trend of floating displays.

Practicality 8/10

For practicality purposes, the Insignia cleverly uses a five-door liftback body style, and you can see the logic in that when you lift the enormous tailgate: the big opening allows you to load bulky items, and the boot can swallow 490 liters of stuff. Granted, that's almost 100 liters smaller than the Passat sedan's boot, but access is better in the Insignia. And if you fold the rear seats, the loading capacity grows to 1,450 liters.

Passenger space is excellent at the front and very good in the back. There's enough knee room and legroom on the second row, while headroom is decent for a six-foot (1.83-meter) tall adult. However, taller passengers will need to slide down the seat to fit because of the sloping roofline. Three adult occupants can fit on the rear bench seat, but the one in the middle will rub shoulders with the other two, and his or her head may touch the ceiling.

Your belongings will have enough space in the Insignia as well: there are some rather large door bins, along with three storage spaces on the center console, a roomy glovebox, and four cup holders.

Infotainment 8/10

The optional Navi 900 IntelliLink infotainment system uses an 8-inch touchscreen that's within easy reach thanks to its high-set position. It's responsive, and it has decent graphics, not to mention the clear menu structure that makes the system easy to adjust to. However, some may prefer a bigger screen.

The physical buttons under the central display, including a much needed "Home" button, are a welcome addition, helping the driver get the job done quickly without getting distracted while driving. The customizable screen in the instrument panel, the head up display, and the buttons on the steering wheel all serve the same purpose.

Navi 900 IntelliLink comes with a built-in navigation system that is pretty straightforward to use, but not as convenient and intelligent as Google Maps or Waze, for example. You can use those in the Insignia as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard — not wirelessly, unfortunately. Pairing your smartphone with the interface via Bluetooth is a breeze, as is mirroring its functions on the car's display.

Efficiency 7/10

The claimed average fuel economy for the 170-hp diesel-powered Insignia with manual transmission and all-wheel drive is 6.1 l/100 km, but during our alert test routine of more than 700 kilometers, it settled at around 8.1 l/100 km. That's a reasonable figure, given that we didn't go to great lengths to get a low fuel consumption.

The eight-speed automatic once again comes to mind, as Opel's claimed fuel economy for the Insignia equipped with the same engine mated to the auto gearbox is slightly lower at 5.6 l/100 km. That's without all-wheel drive, it's true, but one could argue the only reason you'd need AWD is if you lived in a place with harsh winters. Special credit goes to the start-stop system which I think is one of the smoothest, most silent of its kind.

Equipment 9/10

Our tester was a mid-range Dynamic trim level which offers extensive standard equipment. You get stuff like air conditioning, electric parking brake, 7.0-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth and USB, cruise control with speed limiter, start-stop, power windows and side mirrors, multifunction steering wheel wrapped in leather, 17-inch alloys, and more.

Think that's impressive? Wait till you see the options our press car had — a total of €11,480. Highlights included the fully automatic IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights (a blessing during the night), the AGR-certified front leather seats, Navi 900 IntelliLink infotainment system, Bose audio system, FlexRide adaptive chassis, power sunroof, parking assist, adaptive cruise control, 18-inch alloys, and then some.

Not all are essential, but the headlights, leather seats, and adaptive chassis should definitely be on your list — along with the eight-speed automatic transmission.

Acquisition 8/10

I have to say this car turned out to be more impressive than I expected. It's a great all-rounder, and it can also play the premium game if you spec it right. If you are in the market for a family car you should check out the Insignia because not only will you look better than in a Passat, you'll also feel special as there are way fewer Insignias on the road.

Loaded with €11,500 worth of optional extras this car costs around €42,500, depending on the market. Add to that the fact that most dealers will offer you a discount on a high-spec model like the one I drove (worth almost four grand in this case), and the Insignia becomes a tempting proposition.

After all, that kind of money will buy you a Mercedes C-Class or a BMW 3 Series with no options. It's your choice if you want to look good and have all the goodies you want, or just look good.

2017 Opel Insignia Grand Sport 2.0T AWD

Divorce often is a messy business, with myriad difficult decisions to be made or fought over. Where will the kids live? Who gets the dog? Or the wedding china? And what about that mid-size hatchback you’ve just spent several hundred million dollars developing?

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Mid-size car, Full-size car, Automotive design, Family car, Compact car, Sedan, Mazda6,

While the new Regal isn’t here yet, we’ve driven the range-topping Insignia Grand Sport 2.0T AWD in Germany. Although we expected some changes, we’ve already seen the Buick version and it appears the alterations are mostly superficial. American drivers should be getting excited.

No Apologies Needed

Most new cars are better than the models they replace; that’s how progress is supposed to work. But few have managed to improve by the margin seen in the new Insignia. Its predecessor was launched in Europe in 2008, and it has been a segment also-ran for most of its life. While Buick has managed to give the Regal a slight premium shine, the Insignia has always been the epitome of an unexceptional mid-sizer in its homeland, the sort of car the Hertz representative apologizes for giving you when they run out of Volkswagen Passats.

The new Insignia sits on GM’s upgraded Epsilon II (Europeans say E2XX) architecture, making it platform buddies with the Chevrolet Malibu. It pretty much aces the scorecard compared with its predecessor: bigger, lighter, more efficient, and—with the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine—faster. More important, it looks good: GM Europe can be said to have pretty much saved its best for last, with this car being much tauter and leaner than its predecessor. Overall length has increased by 2.6 inches; the wheelbase, while identical to the Malibu’s, is 3.6 inches longer than before; and the roof sits an inch lower.

Trunk, Vehicle, Car, Family car, Automotive exterior, Automotive design, Automotive wheel system, Wheel, Audi, Auto part,

And yes, it’s a hatchback or, as Buick dubs it, a Sportback. Opel decided to simplify the three body styles of the previous Insignia into two. The Grand Sport uses a long, notchback-emulating liftgate to give it a sedanlike side profile, but the whole rear glass lifts with the decklid. A wagon version also is on sale in Europe, and it, too, is spawning a Buick counterpart with a raised suspension ( the Regal TourX ).

The car we drove for this report was a fully loaded German-market Insignia in Dynamic trim with the top-of-the-range turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four and all-wheel drive. Equipment was generous, with most of it expected to make the transition to the plush versions of the Regal: a reconfigurable digital display screen in the center of the instrument cluster, a large touchscreen for infotainment functions, LED headlights, adaptive dampers, a head-up display, adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist, a 360-degree camera system, onboard Wi-Fi through a 4G LTE connection, and power front seats with a massage function. The car also had Opel’s version of OnStar, which is exactly like ours, only it speaks German.

While exterior dimensions have increased modestly, the new Insignia feels significantly more spacious inside. There is generous room for four adults, with the possibility of seating three across in back, plus a decent-size cargo hold (even though the big liftgate is heavy to open). Interior quality is good, and although not quite as upmarket as the premium German rivals, it’s solidly constructed and—for the most part—well thought out.

An 8.0-inch touchscreen (lower trim levels have 7.0-inch screens) in the center of the dashboard controls most functions other than heating and ventilation. It’s intuitive to use but lacked the graphic slickness of posher systems, and the white background color was too bright in low light; we’ll have to wait to discover what changes, if any, Buick will make to the user interface.

Lighter and Lively

The turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder is effectively carried over from the previous model, but it has received a slight power boost to 256 horsepower (up from 246). It doesn’t feel quite as enthusiastic as that number suggests it should, though, because the engine has been tuned for everyday drivability rather than all-out pace. Also, like many modern turbocharged engines, it is reluctant to rev far beyond 5000 rpm.

The weak link in the powertrain is the eight-speed automatic gearbox that comes with the all-wheel-drive system, and which proves to be too eager to upshift even when acceleration is needed. Front-drive versions of the Buick will have the same nine-speed transmission as the Malibu. Ultimate performance still impresses, but we’ll have to wait to run a track test when we get our hands on a production Buick model. It certainly feels lively, and a gap in traffic on a derestricted stretch of autobahn was long enough to see an indicated 248 km/h (154 mph), just shy of the official 250-km/h speed limiter.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Motor vehicle, Mid-size car, Automotive design, Executive car, Luxury vehicle, Personal luxury car, Family car,

The autobahn experience also confirmed the Insignia’s considerable talents as a high-speed cruiser, staying stable and composed even at the sort of velocities that would earn custodial sentences in the States. Ride quality is less good at lower speeds, with the adaptive dampers being slightly too firm in their Sport setting and slightly too soft in the comfort-oriented Tour mode.

The new model’s weight reduction equates to about 200 pounds when compared with the last AWD version, and while the Insignia doesn’t possess the agility of something like an Audi A4, it can generate impressive grip when called upon to do so, although at the expense of serious body roll under hard cornering. The AWD system employs a version of GKN’s Twinster torque-vectoring rear differential that is also used under the Ford Focus RS. The Opel shows none of the Ford’s magical ability to tighten its cornering line under extreme use, but the vectoring function certainly reduces understeer at more ordinary speeds.

An Anomaly to Anticipate

The Insignia may be a historic anomaly, but it’s a fine car in its own right. It’s conspicuously more talented than any of the like-size cars that PSA has engineered itself—and which Peugeot and Citroën struggle to sell even to nationalistic French buyers. Let’s hope that a significant part of Opel’s engineering talent survives the inevitable two-into-one downsizing.

More important for U.S. buyers, the Insignia also is a fine base for the new Buick Regal, promising a product that finally will be worthy of the brand’s upmarket aspirations. Stir in reports of a V-6–powered GS model to follow this Sportback and the TourX into the market and there’s much worth waiting for in this Buick.

Production-Start for Opel Flagship: The New Insignia

  • More than €500 million investment in production preparation
  • Insignia Grand Sport in abalone white stars at employee event
  • Opel boss Dr. Neumann praises work so far and emphasizes importance of Insignia

Rüsselsheim.  A new era begins today at Opel’s home plant in Rüsselsheim; the first Insignia Grand Sport produced to customer order officially rolled off the assembly line on Tuesday. “We have been looking forward to today for a long time; our new flagship has finally arrived. This is an important day for Opel and Rüsselsheim,” said Opel CEO, Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann during the celebrations for the start of production of the second generation Opel Insignia. We invested more than €500 million just to prepare for the production of our new flagship.” An Insignia Grand Sport in abalone white with 170 hp 2.0‑liter diesel engine stood in the spotlight at the end of the production line.

Deputy Works Council Chairman, Uwe Baum said: “The team here in Rüsselsheim has once again demonstrated that they can deliver smooth production start-ups enabling great cars to leave the assembly line. The Works Council is especially grateful to them today, because the new Insignia is an important part of the future for Opel, which would not be possible without the input of these colleagues.”

Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann also praised the work of the whole team in the Rüsselsheim plant and added: “The new Opel flagship is a core element of our product offensive, which will reach a new peak with seven new models this year alone.”

Plant Manager, Michael Lewald thanked his workforce for their great efforts in successfully preparing and executing the start of production during the last months. “Our team did another great job and superbly executed this highly complex production-start. I am proud of our new flagship and the performance of the Rüsselsheim team.”

The order books for the new Insignia Grand Sport and Sports Tourer opened on February 16. The first three production cars are destined for Poland, Denmark and Germany. The new Opel flagship just made its official world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show. The car will be in dealer showrooms this summer.

Dr. Neumann is confident that the new edition of the Opel flagship will continue the success of its predecessor. Nine hundred and forty thousand (940,000) units of the first generation Insignia – the 2009 European Car Of The Year – have been sold in total, making it the fourth best-selling Opel model.

Based on an all-new vehicle structure, the new Insignia is up to 200 kilograms lighter than its predecessor as well as lower and more spacious inside. The design is athletic yet elegant. One of the technology highlights is the intelligent all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring – torque distribution to individual wheels within milliseconds. The new Insignia also offers a host of driver assistance systems that contribute to safety and make driving more comfortable and relaxing, such as the second-generation IntelliLux LED ® matrix headlights, adaptive cruise control (ACC) and active lane assist.

Please also read the Opel Post interview with CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann conducted on the occasion of the start of regular production of the new Insignia.

Opel Insignia: Description and Operation

CRUISE CONTROL DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION (WITHOUT ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL)

Cruise Control System

DD - Serial Data - GMLAN High Speed K20 - K20 Engine Control Module S70L - S70L Steering Wheel Controls Switch - Left P16 - P16 Instrument Cluster K9 - K9 Body Control Module

Cruise control is a speed control system that maintains a desired vehicle speed under normal driving conditions at speeds above 40 km/h (25 mph). Steep grades may cause variations in the selected vehicle speeds.

The following are the main components of the Cruise Control System:

  • The accelerator pedal
  • The brake pedal position (BPP) sensor
  • The body control module (BCM)
  • The cruise on/off switch
  • The cruise control cancel switch
  • The + RES switch (equivalent to resume/accelerate switch)
  • The - SET switch (equivalent to set/coast switch)
  • The engine control module (ECM)
  • The throttle actuator control (TAC) motor (gasoline engines only)
  • The vehicle speed sensor

The body control module (BCM) monitors the signal circuit of the cruise control switches, which are located on the steering wheel. The BCM relays the cruise control switch status to the engine control module (ECM) via the serial data circuit. The ECM uses the status of the cruise control switch to determine when to capture and maintain the vehicle speed. The ECM monitors the vehicle speed signal circuit in order to determine the desired vehicle speed.

Voltage is supplied to the cruise control switch via the steering wheel control switch reference voltage circuit supplied by the BCM. The cruise control function switches are arranged in a resistive ladder design, with each cruise control function switch having a different resistance value. The BCM detects a specific voltage value that is associated with the cruise control function switch being activated. The BCM sends a serial data message to the ECM indicating that the on/off switch is active. Similarly, when the normally open + RES switch or the normally open - SET switch are pressed, the switch closes and the BCM detects the predetermined voltage signal on the cruise control resume/accel and set/coast switch signal circuit. The BCM sends a serial data message to the ECM indicating that the + RES switch or the - SET switch is active.

Cruise Control Engaged

The Cruise Control System will engage and adjust vehicle speeds, based on the activation of the following cruise control switches, which are located on the steering wheel:

To engage the Cruise Control System, ensure that the vehicle speed is above 40.2 km/h (25 mph), turn the cruise On/Off switch ON and momentarily press the - SET switch. The ECM will engage the Cruise Control System and record the vehicle speed. The ECM sends a serial data message to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) in order to illuminate the Cruise Engaged indicator in the IPC. Refer to the vehicle owner's manual for the location and operation of the cruise control On/Off indicators and driver information center (DIC) messages.

Pressing the accelerator pedal while the Cruise Control System is engaged, allows the driver to override the Cruise Control System in order to accelerate the vehicle beyond the current set vehicle speed. When the accelerator pedal is released, the vehicle will decelerate and resume the current set vehicle speed.

The driver can also override the current set vehicle speed via the - SET switch and the + RES switch.

When the Cruise Control System is engaged, pressing and holding the - SET switch will allow the vehicle to decelerate from the current set vehicle speed without deactivating the Cruise Control System.

When the - SET switch is released, the ECM will record the vehicle speed and maintain the vehicle speed as the new set vehicle speed. When the Cruise Control System is engaged, momentarily pressing the - SET switch will allow the vehicle to decelerate at a vehicle specific calibratable increment, commonly 1 km/h or 1 mph, each time that the - SET is momentarily pressed, with a minimum vehicle speed of 38 km/h (24 mph). Refer to the vehicle Owner's Manual for more information.

Pressing and holding the + RES switch, when the Cruise Control System is engaged, will allow the vehicle to accelerate to a greater vehicle speed than the current set vehicle speed. When the + RES switch is released, the ECM will record the vehicle speed and maintain the vehicle speed as the new set vehicle speed. When the Cruise Control System is engaged, momentarily pressing the + RES switch will allow the vehicle to accelerate at a vehicle specific calibratable increment, commonly 1 km/h or 1 mph, each time that the + RES switch is momentarily pressed. Momentarily activating the + RES switch will recall the previous vehicle speed, after the cruise control system has been disengaged by pressing the brake pedal, or CANCEL switch. Refer to the vehicle Owner's Manual for more information.

Cruise Control Disengaged

The engine control module (ECM) disengages the cruise control operation based on the signals from the following switches:

  • The On/Off switch

The Cruise Control System will disengage when the brake pedal is applied. The body control module (BCM) monitors the BPP sensor via the BPP sensor signal circuit as the voltage signal increases while the pedal is further applied. The ECM monitors the BPP signal through a discrete input and a serial data message signal from the BCM indicating the brake status. When either signal indicates the brake pedal is applied, the ECM will disengage the cruise control system.

The Cruise Control System will also disengage when the cruise control on/off switch is switched OFF, or the cruise control cancel switch is activated. The body control module (BCM) determines when the cruise control cancel switch is activated. When the normally open cancel switch is closed, the BCM detects the predetermined voltage signal on the cruise control function switch circuit. The vehicle speed stored in the memory of the engine control module will be erased when the cruise control On/Off switch is turned OFF, or the ignition switch is turned OFF. The BCM sends a serial data message to the ECM in order to disengage the cruise control system. When the Cruise Control System has been disengaged, the ECM sends a serial message to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) in order to turn OFF the Cruise Engaged indicator.

Every time the Cruise Control System is disengaged, the ECM will keep track of the reason for system disengagement. The last 8 disengagement reasons will be recorded within the ECM memory. The scan tool will display the last 8 Cruise Disengage History parameters, in which one out of approximately 50 possible reasons will be displayed in each of these 8 parameters. For the disengagement reason to be displayed within the scan tool parameter the Cruise Control System is active and disengagement is requested.

When engagement of the system is requested but an engagement inhibit is present, the most recent inhibit reason is recorded in the ECM history. The scan tool will display the most recent inhibit reason, in which one out of approximately 50 possible reasons will be displayed.

Cruise Control Inhibited

The engine control module (ECM) inhibits the cruise control operation when any of the following conditions exist:

  • The ECM has not detected a brake pedal activation from the body control module (BCM) this ignition cycle.
  • A Cruise Control System DTC has been set.
  • The vehicle speed is less than 38.6 km/h (24 mph).
  • The vehicle speed is too high.
  • The vehicle is in PARK, REVERSE, NEUTRAL, or 1st gear.
  • The engine RPM is low.
  • The engine RPM is high.
  • The system voltage is not between 9 volts and 16 volts.
  • The Antilock Brake System (ABS)/Traction Control System (TCS) is active for more than a calibratable time (typically 0.3 to 0.7 seconds).

Cruise Control Inhibit Reasons

This is a general list of inhibit reasons. Not every inhibit reason is applicable to all vehicles. Refer to the following list for the last 8 reasons that have been recorded during the current ignition cycle.

Does the Astra K has adaptive cruise control (ACC)?

  • Add to quote

Hi, it seems not to be clear if there is adaptive CC on the Astra's with Opel Eye (safety pack). Does anyone know? Regards, Relic.

Nope, but I've read rumors somewhere it will be added sometime later (maybe MY2017?)

adaptive cruise control opel insignia

No, only on Insignia (in the UK)

That won't be as an upgrade on an existing astra k, I assume... What does MY mean?

Model Year. ACC needs radar to work properly. You can forget about upgrade on older models, as everything else works from the camera. Since the J had optional acc, i would guess the system in the K didn't work properly, so it was postponed.

Doesn't the K have a radar, because it can tell how many seconds the follow distance between you and the next car is? Doesn't it already have all the components needed for acc, is it just that the software has been crippled and acc has been disabled?

It must have radar for emergency braking, myou cant measure distance acuratly with a camera, the latter must be used for sign recognition and lane change. Too bad it doesnt have acc; it would be a killer option for me.

Everything works from the camera. Emergency braking works only at low city speeds and collision alert only at higher speeds. It wont work if snow covers the camera and in foggy conditions. It's usability is very limited in reality. For me to be really useful, emergency braking should work in most dangerous situations, which is bad weather conditions on highway and multi-vehicle collision because of fog, heavy rain and you cant see it in time.

Clearly you havent experienced special conditions where you drive in a dense fog and visibility goes from perfect to 0 in just few meters. You cant se 2m in front of your car and so doesnt you camera. Radar suported safety system could see trough fog and warn the driver and brake if needed, opel eye camera is useless as it cant see, the driver cant also see shit. And the driver software is full of bugs. Opel eyes has some functionality, but is more marketing gimmick than anything else. Still better than nothing.

Radar system would increase the price and the average opel buyer wont understand the difference between the two, so why bother and waste money?

I was being slightly sarcastic, but the main point is valid - drive at a speed that will allow you to stop well within the distance you can see to be clear. You should leave enough space between you and the vehicle in front so that you can pull up safely if it suddenly slows down or stops. Electronic systems can help, but you're the one driving the car.

When I first got my car I had to do a motorway drive in horrendous conditions - dark night, no Street lights, torrential rain and standing water on the surface of the road. I could hardly see in front of the car and had to keep speed down. The road was so wet it was difficult to see the lane markings (in some places you couldn't see them). However, at all times, the car was still telling me how far I was from the car in front and the lane assist worked perfectly too. I have wondered how it works, but to be honest I don't really care, it just works!

Now Astra K also has adaptive cruise control, according to Opel Germany Astrak K configuration page.

As far as I know there isn't adaptive cruise control on Astra.

Ok I was wrong. Actually it is available... "Opel Eye førerassistentpakke med Adaptiv Cruise Control"

Yep, opel sells it in MY17 as a part of "Driver assistence pack 2" only for 1.4T 110kw, 1.6T and 100kw diesel engines. But the price is ridiculous, something like 1200€ so I doubt anyone would actually buy that...

adaptive cruise control opel insignia

This sucks. It costs 800€ here on a trim model that has driver assistance pack 1. However, on lower trim model ACC is not an option, but standard assistance pack 1 with same features basically costs 600€. So why the hell on earth doesn't ACC cost 200€ more? :/ Is it because it's a whole different technology?

adaptive cruise control opel insignia

Driver assistance pack 1 is camera based and will give you emergency braking ( allegedly). I have not come across ACC that is not radar based, although you would think the technology available in DAP1 would be able to do the job. I was disappointed that ACC, and the Driver Asistance pack 2 is not available at all in the UK, do you think it may only be set up for LHD?

Only the cost involved in making a RHD version...

They've managed it on the new Zafira Tourer! (34 secs)

Service Adaptive Cruise Control

  • Add to quote

Hey everyone! I have a 2012 Opel Insignia since I'm not from the UK, but because it's basically the same car, I'd like everyone's opinion on the matter. My Insignia Sports Tourer (2.0 diesel ecoflex 96 kW) is having some issues with the adaptive cruise control which turns off, doesn't work for a while, then randomly comes back on and works how it should until it turns off again. Each time it turns off (while in use) I get a "Service Adaptive Cruise Control" and "Service Collision Prep" messages. I doubt it's a radar issue because when it works, it worky flawlessly, distance management, scanning other vehicles, all of it. I went to the local dealer who scanned the errors with the MDI but couldn't tell me the exact error code from some reason, but only that it was something with brakes and signal reception. I thought about the possibility of a signal timeout or interruption, so I googled and found the adaptive cruise control wiring schematics and diagrams for the Insignia, along with some error detection flowcharts which suggest that if the ECU doesn't receive all the necessary data in the expected time it shuts the system down completely for safety reasons. My question: could it be that the brakes and signal error the car recorded is coming from the brake pedal position sensor? Because I swear to god when I sometimes slam the brake pedal or go to an abrupt stop the cruise control comes back online. Does it need to be replaced? Can I do something with it alone without a dealer (clean the jack connectors or something)? I love the car and the way it goes, but these electrical issues are driving me up the wall. Thanks to everyone in advance for your time and help.

Yes a faulty brake pedal position sensor will stop the acc working, one thing to bear in mind though is that if it's changed the new one will need calibrating to the car.

Thanks for the info, I already got a decent quote on a replacement sensor and the work. I'll update once I do actually get it sorted.

It came back on today and was working for almost 300 meters. Then it died again. This is a haunted car, I swear. Or at least it knows when I'm badmouthing it.

Situation update. A week ago I somehow managed to get my hand into the pedal assembly and jiggled around some cables. Cruise control worked fault-free for a week. Went onto the motorway to do some DPF maintenance and I got the error again. Most likely it's a wiring/connection issue since last night I tried jiggling the cable again to no avail, only to have cruise control come back on for 30 seconds or so after giving the brake pedal some "percussive maintenance" in the form of a lateral pedal kick.

adaptive cruise control opel insignia

Did you get the sensor changed?

Getting it replaced on Wednesday. I am still trying to figure out what to do if it's not the sensor.

adaptive cruise control opel insignia

Come back with the results of the sensor firstly, fingers crossed that'll do it. There will be a fault code stored in conjunction with the warning message you're seeing on the dash, there's no way round diagnosing any further without that information. Has it had any work relating to wheel alignment, or front end work/removal that might've disturbed the alignment of the radar and then not had the ADAS recalibrated?

No, no work of such kind that I am aware of. I will check with my friend at the service centre, there is no data in the service history.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to give one last update regarding the adaptive cruise control issue I've been having. I haven't had the chance to test more thoroughly yet, but it appears the new battery sorted this issue out. No errors of any kind regarding the cruise control since the battery replacement. My first guess was the brake pedal position sensor, but it appears to be working fine. EDIT: after the battery replacement it was fine... For 10 days. First longer motorway trip, threw an error. Now the car has a new brake pedal position sensor, but due to the coronavirus lockdown I'm unable to test it more thoroughly. EDIT 06/2020: yep, it was the brake pedal position sensor. Ever since I had it replaced, the adaptive cruise control had no errors. I updated the post in case anyone else has a similar issue.
